  1. All right, well, if you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to the Gospel of John.

  2. We're continuing on.

  3. We're in John chapter 17, and we're looking at Jesus' prayer right before he leads his

    John 17 chapter mention

  4. disciples into the Garden of Gethsemane.

  5. Jesus has just begun to pray to the Father with his disciples there with him, and we

  6. first heard Jesus speaking about his relationship with the Father and his longing to be restored

  7. to the glory that he had with the Father before the world began.

  8. Then we heard Jesus begin to reflect and report to the Father on how things have gone well

  9. with his disciples, how he has given them the Father's word, and they have responded in faith.

  10. And then we heard Jesus praying for their protection.

  11. And so we're picking up this prayer today, continuing it in verse 13 of chapter 17.

  12. Jesus praying to the Father says,

  13. I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they

  14. may have the full measure of my joy within them.

  15. So Jesus again tells his Father that he's coming to him.

  16. And then he goes on to say this.

  17. He says, I say these things in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy.

  18. Now there's some different ideas here about what Jesus means.

  19. This is a more literal rendering of it.

  20. These things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy.

  21. When Jesus says, these things I say, what is he referring to?

  22. Is he referring to his prayer?

  23. Like these things that I'm praying to you right now, saying to you.

  24. Or is he talking about these things that he's just been speaking to his disciples?

  25. These words of warning and comfort and promises.

  26. Without getting into a lengthy treatment of this, it seems most likely to be the second one.

  27. In other words, I don't think Jesus is stating the purpose of his prayer.

  28. Rather, just like before, it seems that Jesus is kind of reporting back to the Father what he has been doing.

  29. What the aim and the goal and the purpose of it is.

  30. He's saying, I'm saying these things to them.

  31. These things that I've just said, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.

  32. And this really does fit with all that we've heard before.

  33. If we look back to verse 22 and what Jesus said to them there.

  34. He said, now is your time of grief.

  35. But I will see you again.

  36. And you will rejoice.

  37. And no one will take away your joy.

  38. Or, just a few verses down.

  39. In verse 27.

  40. He says, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

  41. Or, again, in verse 33.

  42. He said, I've told you these things so that in me you may have peace.

  43. Take heart.

  44. I have overcome the world.

  45. So, these are the things that have to do with the disciples having joy.

  46. Their promises to hold on to.

  47. Their truths about the Father's love for them.

  48. And Jesus speaks about how he will soon have the victory.

  49. All of this that Jesus has been saying to them has a purpose.

  50. In verse 33, as we see on the screen there.

  51. It was so that they might have peace.

  52. But now here, in verse 13.

  53. As Jesus tells the Father about it.

  54. It's also joy.

  55. Jesus wants his disciples to have joy.

  56. And this is not the first time that Jesus has expressed this.

  57. If we think back to when he was teaching about using that metaphor of the vine and the branches.

  58. Back in John chapter 15, verse 11.

    John 15:11

  59. He said something similar.

  60. He said, I've told you this.

  61. All this.

  62. So that my joy may be in you.

  63. And that your joy may be complete.

  64. I think it's basically the same statement made to the disciples there.

  65. But here in this prayer, he's speaking to the Father.

  66. These things I speak in the world so that they may have my joy made full in themselves.

  67. Now, I know I said it back when we were in chapter 15.

  68. But I do want to say it again one more time.

  69. Do you know that Jesus desires for his followers to be happy?

  70. To have joy.

  71. Jesus says to the Father, this has been my aim.

  72. This has been my goal.

  73. In saying all these things to them.

  74. So that they may have joy.

  75. And here Jesus describes that joy in three ways.

  76. It's not just any old joy.

  77. It's my joy, says Jesus.

  78. That they may have my joy.

  79. So Jesus has joy.

  80. This is where so many of those Jesus films that have been made fall flat.

  81. You probably know the ones I'm talking about.

  82. They cast Jesus as always so serious and so stoic.

  83. Almost unable to smile.

  84. But Jesus had joy.

  85. It says it right here.

  86. There was a joy that was his.

  87. And his desire expressed here to the Father.

  88. His prayer is that we, his followers, might come to have that same joy.

  89. To share in that joy that he has.

  90. Doesn't that sound great?

  91. Now we might be thinking.

  92. Well, Jesus was the perfect son of God.

  93. I can't ever have a joy like his.

  94. Because I'm a broken sinner.

  95. Living in a broken world.

  96. I don't know.

  97. Maybe I'll come to know just a small part of Jesus' joy.

  98. But in his prayer here, Jesus doesn't leave us room for sharing only a part of his joy.

  99. He says,

  100. These things I speak in the world

  101. So that they may have my joy made full.

  102. Or as another translation says,

  103. The full measure of my joy.

  104. The full measure.

  105. Jesus doesn't just want you to be happy.

  106. He wants you to be happy as he is happy.

  107. With the full measure of his happiness.

  108. Again, don't believe the lie of the devil.

  109. He's trying to convince you that God wants you to be miserable.

  110. But it's a lie.

  111. Truly, it's the devil who wants you to be miserable.

  112. Jesus wants you to be happy.

  113. He wants you to have joy.

  114. And not just a little bit, but the full measure of his joy.

  115. And he and the Father know best where to get that.

  116. How to have that.

  117. Do we believe that?

  118. Sometimes we struggle to see that.

  119. Maybe there's something that we value.

  120. Or desire.

  121. Or crave.

  122. And we want it so bad that we'll do almost anything together.

  123. Forget it.

  124. Even compromise.

  125. Even disregard.

  126. Or ignore.

  127. The clear teaching of Jesus.

  128. The commands of Jesus.

  129. We think that thing will make us most happy.

  130. But the truth is.

  131. We aren't seeing things clearly.

  132. Sin has a way of blinding us.

  133. Pride has a way of clouding our judgment.

  134. Greed.

  135. And envy.

  136. Make it so that we just can't truly appreciate and see what's going on.

  137. And this is where faith has to come into play.

  138. We have to trust that God really does know best.

  139. And that he's not just for our holiness.

  140. For our moral purity.

  141. But he's also for our happiness.

  142. Along with that.

  143. Our greatest happiness.

  144. The full measure.

  145. That's what Jesus was saying here.

  146. My aim.

  147. My purpose.

  148. In teaching all that I've been saying to them this night.

  149. It is so that they may have my joy made full within themselves.

  150. That's the last descriptor there.

  151. Within themselves.

  152. This is not an external happiness.

  153. This is not circumstantial happiness.

  154. This is not pretending to be happy.

  155. Have you ever been in a situation where everything is going really good.

  156. And you feel like I should be happy.

  157. I have no reason not to be happy.

  158. Everybody around me is really happy.

  159. Why am I?

  160. It's just not in here.

  161. Why am I not able to participate?

  162. To celebrate?

  163. To just be happy in this moment.

  164. And enjoy the good things.

  165. Jesus doesn't want for his followers.

  166. A faked joy.

  167. Or a pretend joy.

  168. A do your best to feel joy.

  169. He wants that joy to be within us.

  170. Within them.

  171. Deep inside of us.

  172. That we really feel it.

  173. So that's the first thing we see this morning in Jesus' prayer.

  174. We see that Jesus is for our joy.

  175. He himself has joy.

  176. And the goal and the aim is for them.

  177. For his disciples and for us.

  178. To have his joy.

  179. Joy made full.

  180. Joy within them.

  181. Joy within us.

  182. Jesus goes on.

  183. Verse 14.

  184. He says,

  185. I have given them.

  186. Referring to the disciples.

  187. I have given them your word.

  188. And the world has hated them.

  189. For they are not of the world.

  190. Any more than I am of the world.

  191. We won't linger long here.

  192. Jesus has said most of this already.

  193. He has spoken for God to the disciples.

  194. Even more.

  195. He has entrusted them with his words.

  196. To go out and give to places.

  197. He sent them out.

  198. They have participated.

  199. And Jesus sees what has happened.

  200. Just as people have hated him.

  201. That same hatred has been directed to Jesus' followers.

  202. And Jesus explains the reason.

  203. As he's praying.

  204. He reflects on it.

  205. It's because they're not of the world.

  206. Just like he is not of the world.

  207. And we've talked about this already.

  208. Jesus offers new birth.

  209. He gives us a new life.

  210. A change in who we belong to.

  211. When we repent.

  212. And we put our trust in him.

  213. He changes our citizenship.

  214. Our status.

  215. So drastically.

  216. That we no longer belong to the world.

  217. We belong to heaven.

  218. And the God of heaven.

  219. Just as Jesus.

  220. Belongs to heaven.

  221. And comes from heaven.

  222. So like the disciples.

  223. We too can find ourselves.

  224. Quite at odds with the world.

  225. Under fire.

  226. Under attack.

  227. Because we've become like foreigners to them.

  228. Perhaps in the minds of some people.

  229. Even traitors.

  230. We no longer celebrate the darkness.

  231. We love the light.

  232. We no longer eagerly participate in those things.

  233. That we know are wrong.

  234. We see them for what they are.

  235. And so we hate those things.

  236. We see the damage that they do in our lives.

  237. Think about this in the lives of Jesus' disciples.

  238. There were whole towns.

  239. Where the disciples of Jesus were not welcomed.

  240. In the same way today.

  241. It's not easy being a Christian in our world.

  242. It can be very difficult.

  243. But the truth is.

  244. God wants you and me here.

  245. In this world.

  246. In this world.

  247. He has a purpose for you and me.

  248. Right now.

  249. Here in this world.

  250. Listen to what Jesus says next.

  251. He says,

  252. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world.

  253. But that you protect them from the evil one.

  254. These words really struck a chord in my heart.

  255. As I was meditating on this.

  256. This week.

  257. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world.

  258. Think about this.

  259. Jesus knows that the world hates his disciples.

  260. He's watched it.

  261. He's seen it with these 11 men.

  262. They've hated them too.

  263. He knows what the world will do to them after he leaves.

  264. He's just warned them about that.

  265. This very night.

  266. And yet.

  267. He prays this.

  268. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world.

  269. Jesus wanted them to stay in the world.

  270. Because he had a purpose for them.

  271. To fulfill.

  272. In the world.

  273. Glance down to verse 18.

  274. Verse 18.

  275. Jesus said.

  276. As you sent me into the world.

  277. I have sent them.

  278. Into the world.

  279. God could take us out of this world at any moment.

  280. I used to wonder that as a kid.

  281. I used to think about that.

  282. You know.

  283. Why doesn't he?

  284. Why doesn't.

  285. We believe in him.

  286. And he'd just take us right up to heaven.

  287. Right up to glory.

  288. We all.

  289. Those of us who believe.

  290. We know.

  291. That that's how good this gift of salvation is.

  292. That once we accept it and receive it.

  293. It's a done deal.

  294. And we belong to God.

  295. so why doesn't he just take us out right now he's got the power and the authority to do it

  296. he could just snap his fingers and say the word and we'd be there with jesus in heaven

  297. in fact jesus wants us to be with him where he is this is what jesus says just a couple verses

  298. later in 24 verse 24 he says father i want those you have given me to be with me where i am and to see

  299. my glory and yet

  300. jesus says i'm not asking that you take them out of the world i have sent them into the world

  301. when it comes to our faith in jesus sometimes we lose sight of this don't we

  302. why doesn't he just take us now

  303. jesus says i'm not asking you to do that father no it's the opposite i've sent them into the world

  304. he has a purpose for them being there he has a purpose for us being here and sometimes we lose

  305. sight of that in a different way we maybe we just get distracted by the things of this world

  306. we get engrossed in things of this world

  307. i don't know maybe you're glad that god doesn't take you up to heaven right now maybe there's still

  308. some stuff you want to do and get or things you want to experience here in this world and sometimes

  309. we can get so wrapped up in these things and yet the truth is these things are things that won't last

  310. and in that way we can lose sight of the fact that god has us here for a purpose he has sent us to do

  311. something here are we doing it are we focused on it jesus taught a lot about this this tendency we have

  312. to get sidetracked remember the parable of the sower in the soils farmer goes out and scatters his

  313. seeds some of it falls along uh amongst soil that has weeds in it and these weeds they spring up beside

  314. the plant that's growing there and choke it out and jesus gave the explanation to his disciples he says

  315. it represents people who hear the word of god but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of

  316. wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word making it unfruitful

  317. we can easily get distracted from that great purpose for which god has us here in the world by the stuff

  318. of the world jesus taught about how the stuff of this world the treasures of earth don't last

  319. the sermon on the mount moth and rust destroy thieves break in and steal

  320. things wear out and fall apart they break down you get that brand new vehicle and bam there's a moose

  321. that comes out of nowhere as you're driving at night and not enough damage to write it off but enough

  322. damage that the vehicle will never be the same and it's not worth nearly as much as it was

  323. or i think of our family's recent vacation in mexico we had a wonderful time there we were gifted a week's

  324. day at a beautiful resort there and we just enjoyed it so much but then the week was up and we had to

  325. leave it was paradise but it it was temporary now don't get me wrong there's good stuff here on earth

  326. we all know that god has put it here in this world for our enjoyment first timothy chapter four first

  327. timothy chapter six but jesus hasn't left us here just for that just to enjoy it heaven will be far

  328. better the new earth that god creates at the very end of our world story will have far better stuff far

  329. better experiences things that will last forever

  330. but god has us here in the world now for a purpose

  331. now for the disciples it's it's easy for us to see that purpose because we have their whole story

  332. written out for us here we see how they were sent they were chosen to be apostles they were given a job

  333. and a mission to go forth and proclaim the good news of jesus to bear witness to tell of all they saw and

  334. heard and experienced with jesus and do signs and wonders that pointed to jesus and see churches established

  335. but i think we all know that these words here apply to us as well two thousand years later my prayer is

  336. not that you take them out of the world

  337. i have sent them into the world

  338. he could take us now but no

  339. there's a little corner of the world

  340. named davidson

  341. with its surrounding community and the people here

  342. matter deeply

  343. to god

  344. my prayer is not that you take them out of the world

  345. i have sent them into the world

  346. where i got thinking of how we pack shoe boxes as a church

  347. there are other little known corners of the world where kids have it difficult right from birth

  348. they hardly have anything

  349. and the odds of them hearing about jesus are slim

  350. if god were to take us all out of this world right now where would that leave them

  351. we aren't the apostles

  352. we have different roles to play

  353. but the bible tells us that each of us has unique gifts

  354. we each have unique abilities

  355. we each have a role

  356. a responsibility

  357. in his body

  358. in his church

  359. to our neighbors

  360. to the poor

  361. the orphan

  362. the widow

  363. the people around us

  364. we're not the apostles

  365. but we have inherited the same great commission

  366. that they did

  367. the same overall mission

  368. god gave the early church

  369. we're to continue it

  370. to pick it up where they left off

  371. to go on making disciples of all nations

  372. baptizing them in the name of the father

  373. and the son and the holy spirit

  374. teaching them to obey everything that christ commanded

  375. bringing that news of his salvation

  376. to those who are lost

  377. in fact this was god's plan

  378. all along

  379. not that we would be taken out of the world

  380. but that we would remain in it

  381. that we would be sent by christ to it

  382. that the good news of jesus salvation

  383. would be proclaimed

  384. all over the earth

  385. and only then

  386. said jesus

  387. will the end come

  388. and so i want to ask you this morning

  389. are you on mission

  390. with jesus

  391. are you living

  392. soberly

  393. aware and conscious

  394. of this great purpose

  395. if you belong to jesus christ

  396. he has you

  397. here

  398. in this world

  399. in this community

  400. for a reason

  401. he gives you another day's provision

  402. and breath

  403. for a reason

  404. and this is a big part of what it means

  405. to be the church of jesus christ

  406. it's about carrying out this purpose

  407. together

  408. it's about making our glorious savior

  409. known

  410. in every corner of the earth together

  411. starting with our own corner

  412. may we not squander

  413. or waste our time in this world

  414. may we be found faithful

  415. doing the things that

  416. we've been made to do

  417. and gifted to do

  418. while we're here

  419. so here in jesus prayer

  420. first we see that jesus

  421. is for our joy

  422. then we see that

  423. jesus wants us to remain here

  424. for a purpose

  425. and finally we hear jesus pray once again

  426. for our protection

  427. this comes to us in verse 15

  428. as well

  429. my prayer is not that you take them out of the world

  430. but that you protect them

  431. from the evil one

  432. it's the second time jesus has prayed for their protection

  433. but this time very specifically

  434. it's protection

  435. from the evil one

  436. the devil is on the prowl

  437. he is real

  438. and it would be his greatest delight

  439. to trip you up

  440. to distract you

  441. to turn you off of the path

  442. to hurt you

  443. to do damage to you

  444. to your family

  445. to tempt you

  446. and so jesus prays

  447. for his people

  448. protect them

  449. from the evil one

  450. let me ask you

  451. do you think the father

  452. will answer this request of jesus

  453. do you think he will give him what he asked

  454. absolutely

  455. now that doesn't mean that we'll never be tempted

  456. it doesn't mean the devil will never be permitted to come after us

  457. but it does mean that he will not prevail

  458. over us

  459. jesus has prayed for our protection

  460. from him

  461. and this

  462. is our confidence

  463. as john wrote

  464. later on in his letter

  465. first john 4 verse 4

    1 John 4:4

  466. you dear children are from god

  467. and have overcome them

  468. because the one who is in you

  469. is greater

  470. than the one who is in

  471. the world

  472. that being the devil

  473. so we've heard and seen

  474. three things in jesus prayer

  475. this morning

  476. number one

  477. jesus is for your

  478. joy

  479. he himself is full of joy

  480. and he desires for his people

  481. his followers

  482. to have that same joy

  483. in the fullest measure

  484. deep down in our hearts

  485. will you give your trust to jesus

  486. will you surrender your life to him

  487. knowing that he has

  488. your best in mind

  489. not just holiness

  490. but happiness

  491. we've seen that god has a purpose

  492. for all of us

  493. who believe

  494. remaining here

  495. in this world

  496. let me encourage you

  497. with these words

  498. don't let your heart

  499. and your

  500. your aims

  501. be captive

  502. to the

  503. to the lesser things of earth

  504. as the church of jesus christ

  505. we have a great mission

  506. and purpose

  507. for being here

  508. are you living that

  509. are you seeking first

  510. and above all

  511. christ's kingdom

  512. god's will to be done

  513. jesus name

  514. to be glorified

  515. and known

  516. that's why we're still here

  517. and finally

  518. the devil is on the prowl

  519. but don't worry about him

  520. don't be afraid of him

  521. our great high priest

  522. jesus has asked the father

  523. for our protection from him

  524. and if we belong to christ

  525. our good shepherd

  526. then we have

  527. this confidence

  528. we will overcome him

  529. and he cannot stand against us

  530. so let's

  531. give thanks now

  532. together

  533. for god's

  534. grace

  535. and mercy

  536. father in heaven

  537. we thank you

  538. for these things

  539. that we see

  540. in the prayer

  541. of your son

  542. and i pray

  543. that these truths

  544. would leak

  545. and seep

  546. deep down

  547. into our hearts

  548. that we would

  549. surrender ourselves

  550. completely to you

  551. to your plan

  552. for our lives

  553. to your commands

  554. we want

  555. that full

  556. joy

  557. that you offer

  558. we also pray

  559. and ask

  560. that you would

  561. give us wisdom

  562. and understanding

  563. about why you've

  564. put each one of us

  565. here

  566. in this world

  567. in this community

  568. what it is

  569. you would have us

  570. be doing

  571. what unique role

  572. we have to play

  573. show us lord

  574. and give us strength

  575. and energy

  576. and passion

  577. for it

  578. and we thank you

  579. too lord

  580. that you protect us

  581. from the evil one

  582. that we are safe

  583. that we are secure

  584. that nobody

  585. not even the devil

  586. can snatch us

  587. from your hand

  588. we give you praise

  589. we give you glory

  590. in jesus name

  591. amen
