  1. We're continuing on this morning in the Gospel of John.

  2. You're welcome to turn there in your Bible if you have it with you, or else the words will be on the screen.

  3. It's the night before Jesus' crucifixion.

  4. And we pick up the story in John chapter 18.

    John 18 chapter mention

  5. When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley.

  6. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.

  7. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.

  8. So John, oh, one more verse, verse 3.

  9. So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.

  10. They were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons.

  11. So John sets the scene for us.

  12. After Jesus had finished praying in the presence of his disciples,

  13. he led his disciples out of the city, across the Kidron Valley to a garden.

  14. Now as we'll see in a moment, this is the same garden mentioned in all the other Gospels.

  15. John doesn't tell us the name, but Matthew and Mark tell us the name.

  16. It's Gethsemane.

  17. Luke doesn't tell us the name either, but he tells us that this place was on the Mount of Olives.

  18. In fact, the name Gethsemane comes from the Aramaic word for oil press.

  19. So this was an olive orchard.

  20. If we look carefully at the language used to describe it here,

  21. it was likely a private estate, a private orchard.

  22. Perhaps the owner had been a believer in Jesus and had offered him the use of his property.

  23. It was probably enclosed by a wall or by trees,

  24. judging by John's description of how they went into it.

  25. And John tells us here in verse 2 that Judas knew this place

  26. because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.

  27. Luke confirms in his Gospel that they were all familiar with this place

  28. because each evening of this week-long Passover,

  29. they've been going out to the Mount of Olives,

  30. probably to this garden.

  31. John tells us in verse 3 that Judas,

  32. the one who betrayed Jesus, came to the garden that night.

  33. And with Judas, or more accurately, led by Judas,

  34. is this large group of men.

  35. John tells us that there was a detachment of soldiers

  36. and some officials from the religious leaders,

  37. the Pharisees and the chief priests.

  38. The word that John uses there to describe this detachment

  39. is specifically tied to the Roman cohorts.

  40. And so these are not Jewish soldiers.

  41. These are Roman soldiers.

  42. Typically, one of these cohorts had about 600 men in it,

  43. but probably only a part of the cohort was present, I imagine,

  44. with the commanding officer.

  45. In addition to the Roman soldiers,

  46. there were these officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees.

  47. And the word for these officials here

  48. is usually used to describe the Jewish temple guard

  49. or temple police.

  50. John tells us that the men in this group

  51. were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons.

  52. The torches and lanterns signal to us

  53. that it is now quite dark, late at night.

  54. The weapon signaled to us

  55. that force may be used, if necessary,

  56. to apprehend Jesus

  57. or to beat back any of his followers

  58. who might try to defend him.

  59. This is the moment that the religious leaders

  60. have been plotting and scheming towards.

  61. And now John is about to tell us

  62. about how this large group met Jesus

  63. that night in the garden.

  64. But before we go on, it's worth mentioning

  65. the other three gospel writers

  66. tell us that Jesus has already been in this garden

  67. for some time now.

  68. Mark tells us that Jesus has been deeply distressed.

  69. The other gospel writers tell us

  70. that he has spent a fair bit of time in prayer.

  71. Meanwhile, his disciples have been keeping watch

  72. for a little bit and then falling asleep.

  73. And keeping watch and falling asleep.

  74. And keeping watch and falling asleep.

  75. While this has been going on,

  76. Jesus has been pouring out his soul

  77. to God the Father.

  78. John skips over all of that in his account.

  79. I guess it's because at the time that John is writing,

  80. those other gospels are probably already widely read

  81. and circulated amongst the churches.

  82. And so John cuts right to the moment

  83. where Jesus meets this large group of men

  84. and tells us a few of the details

  85. that some of the other gospel writers left out.

  86. verse 4.

  87. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,

  88. went out or stepped forth

  89. and asked them,

  90. Who is it you want?

  91. Jesus of Nazareth, they replied.

  92. I am he, Jesus said.

  93. And Judas, the traitor, was standing there with them.

  94. When Jesus said, I am he,

  95. they drew back and fell to the ground.

  96. So John tells us that it was Jesus

  97. who was first to speak.

  98. He went out.

  99. He stepped forth.

  100. He broke the silence with the question,

  101. Who is it that you want?

  102. Who are you looking for?

  103. And the crowd replies,

  104. Jesus of Nazareth.

  105. And in response, Jesus says,

  106. I am he.

  107. And then something rather unexpected happens here.

  108. It says that they, referring to this large group,

  109. drew back and fell to the ground.

  110. Now there's a couple important details here.

  111. First, let's talk about the way Jesus answers

  112. back to them.

  113. Every major English translation I'm aware of

  114. has Jesus saying,

  115. I am he,

  116. in response.

  117. But you may notice,

  118. if some of you have a more literal one,

  119. like the New American Standard on the screen,

  120. that the he is in italics,

  121. because the word he is not there

  122. in the original language.

  123. Quite literally, Jesus says,

  124. I am.

  125. Now the reason why all the translations add he

  126. is somewhat warranted,

  127. because if you wanted to say,

  128. I am he,

  129. in Greek,

  130. back then,

  131. you wouldn't add the word he

  132. at the end,

  133. because it's implied.

  134. But here's the significance of this.

  135. I am,

  136. by itself,

  137. is the divine name,

  138. the name of God.

  139. It's the name that God gave for himself to Moses,

  140. long ago at the burning bush.

  141. And Jesus has already,

  142. in previous accounts,

  143. taken God's name for his own,

  144. and spoken it to the people.

  145. He did that back in John 8,

    John 8:58

  146. verse 58.

  147. Before Abraham was born,

  148. I am,

  149. he said to them.

  150. So it's quite possible that Jesus is not only identifying himself here as Jesus of Nazareth,

  151. but also as the Lord God himself.

  152. The second important detail is this response of the large group to Jesus' reply.

  153. Jesus says,

  154. I am,

  155. and John tells us that they drew back and fell to the ground.

  156. What's going on here?

  157. I want to handle this carefully.

  158. First of all,

  159. I'll ask you

  160. to answer me this question.

  161. Does John,

  162. here,

  163. in the text,

  164. say,

  165. why

  166. they drew back and fell to the ground?

  167. The answer is no.

  168. He doesn't say,

  169. they drew back and fell to the ground because,

  170. fill in the blank.

  171. So I want it to be absolutely clear up front

  172. that there's no authoritative,

  173. inspired by God answer to the question

  174. of why they drew back and fell to the ground.

  175. And the reason I say this is because

  176. quite a number of our Christian brothers

  177. have just kind of asserted it as fact,

  178. a well-established fact,

  179. that this is why

  180. they fell to the ground.

  181. So what are the major ideas about what's happening here?

  182. According to some of our brothers in Christ,

  183. why did they draw back and fall to the ground in response to this?

  184. Well, some Christians speculate

  185. that Jesus startled them.

  186. Perhaps that he called out

  187. while he was still shrouded in the darkness,

  188. saying,

  189. I am he,

  190. stepping out into the light

  191. right at that moment

  192. from their perspective,

  193. coming out of nowhere,

  194. causing some in the front

  195. to kind of trip and fall back,

  196. and then the domino effect happened,

  197. and it knocked everybody over

  198. in the whole group.

  199. That's one idea.

  200. Some Christians speculate

  201. that it had to do with Jesus' bearing

  202. or his manner.

  203. Perhaps that he just had such a boldness

  204. in walking right up to them

  205. that just kind of stirred up some fear

  206. or awe

  207. in the hearts of

  208. some in the group,

  209. at least.

  210. Again,

  211. maybe it was those in front

  212. that caused the stumbling back

  213. and tripping

  214. and the domino effect.

  215. Others suggest

  216. it was Jesus' moral supremacy

  217. that caused this reaction,

  218. that as he walked toward them

  219. closer and closer,

  220. perhaps a twinge of guilt

  221. and embarrassment

  222. rose up in the hearts

  223. of some of these men,

  224. causing them to stumble back

  225. and perhaps also

  226. trigger the domino effect.

  227. Some Christians speculate

  228. that it was something about

  229. what Jesus said

  230. when he took the divine name

  231. on his lips,

  232. when he said,

  233. I am.

  234. Perhaps something he said there

  235. or the way he said it

  236. caused them to draw back

  237. and fall to the ground.

  238. And within this category

  239. are those

  240. who

  241. perhaps

  242. give the explanation

  243. that some were

  244. just shocked

  245. that he would take up

  246. the name of God.

  247. You didn't speak

  248. the name of God.

  249. And that they

  250. fall back.

  251. because of that.

  252. Now that doesn't really explain

  253. why the Roman soldiers

  254. fell back

  255. because they didn't really

  256. care too much about that.

  257. But maybe again

  258. the domino effect

  259. is needed here as well

  260. to get the whole group

  261. to fall back on the ground.

  262. Finally,

  263. some Christians speculate

  264. that this was

  265. a miracle

  266. or a sign

  267. that Jesus performed.

  268. That there was some sort of

  269. unleashing of God's power

  270. through his words

  271. that just sort of

  272. blew them all back

  273. causing them to fall

  274. to the ground.

  275. Some Christians

  276. go so far

  277. as to assert

  278. that this was a

  279. theophany

  280. which means

  281. an appearance

  282. of God the Father

  283. himself

  284. breaking into

  285. our world

  286. through the words

  287. that Jesus spoke

  288. with such power

  289. that it just

  290. knocked them all back

  291. and they fell down

  292. on their behinds.

  293. Now,

  294. I understand

  295. why many decide

  296. to preach

  297. this final

  298. fourth view

  299. as fact

  300. because it's

  301. definitely worth

  302. asking the question.

  303. I mean,

  304. these are career

  305. soldiers,

  306. many of them.

  307. What would cause

  308. them to recoil

  309. like this

  310. and fall down

  311. on the ground?

  312. And so the reasoning

  313. goes,

  314. there had to be

  315. something supernatural

  316. at work here.

  317. But then I think

  318. we should also

  319. consider

  320. what happened

  321. the last time

  322. that Jesus

  323. took up the name

  324. of God

  325. like this.

  326. It wasn't this.

  327. The people

  328. didn't fall back.

  329. Instead,

  330. they picked up stones

  331. and they got ready

  332. to stone Jesus

  333. to try to kill him.

  334. We might also

  335. look at the

  336. overall trajectory

  337. of the story here.

  338. Does Jesus

  339. performing

  340. a spectacular

  341. miracle like this

  342. really fit

  343. with the trajectory

  344. that he's on?

  345. The trajectory

  346. of surrender

  347. and yielding

  348. to the will

  349. of the Father?

  350. Has there not

  351. been a sense

  352. of finality

  353. already to

  354. Jesus'

  355. public ministry

  356. and the works,

  357. the signs

  358. that he has done

  359. and given

  360. for them

  361. to see and believe?

  362. And so I would

  363. just encourage us

  364. not to be dogmatic

  365. about why they

  366. drew back

  367. and fell to the ground.

  368. The truth is

  369. we don't know

  370. fully

  371. what happened

  372. in that moment.

  373. John doesn't

  374. say why.

  375. Let's carry on here.

  376. Verse 7.

  377. Again,

  378. Jesus asked them,

  379. who is it

  380. you want?

  381. Jesus of Nazareth,

  382. they said.

  383. Jesus answered,

  384. I told you

  385. that I am he.

  386. If you are

  387. looking for me,

  388. then let these

  389. men go.

  390. This happened

  391. so that the words

  392. he had spoken

  393. would be fulfilled.

  394. I have not

  395. lost one

  396. of those

  397. you gave me.

  398. So whatever

  399. just happened

  400. between Jesus

  401. and this large

  402. group of men,

  403. it's Jesus

  404. who carries

  405. the conversation

  406. forward.

  407. And what

  408. is Jesus'

  409. primary concern

  410. in this

  411. moment?

  412. It seems

  413. to be

  414. the safety

  415. of his

  416. disciples.

  417. He seems

  418. eager to

  419. establish

  420. a verbal

  421. understanding

  422. with his

  423. opponents

  424. that it's

  425. me

  426. that you

  427. are looking

  428. for.

  429. And if

  430. it's me

  431. that you

  432. want,

  433. let these

  434. men

  435. go.

  436. Now we

  437. probably

  438. wouldn't have

  439. stopped to

  440. think too

  441. much about

  442. this,

  443. except that

  444. John draws

  445. our attention

  446. to it

  447. in verse

  448. 9.

  449. He says,

  450. this happened

  451. so that the

  452. words Jesus

  453. had spoken

  454. would be

  455. fulfilled.

  456. I have

  457. not lost

  458. one of

  459. those

  460. you gave

  461. me.

  462. Earlier

  463. in the

  464. evening,

  465. Jesus had

  466. been praying

  467. to the

  468. Father,

  469. back up

  470. in chapter

  471. 17,

  472. verse 12,

  473. and this

  474. is what

  475. he had

  476. prayed.

  477. While I

  478. was with

  479. my

  480. disciples,

  481. I

  482. protected

  483. them and

  484. kept

  485. them safe

  486. by that

  487. name you

  488. gave me.

  489. None

  490. has been

  491. lost

  492. except the

  493. one doomed

  494. to destruction.

  495. So John,

  496. it seems,

  497. is drawing a

  498. line between

  499. what Jesus

  500. said earlier

  501. in his

  502. prayer and

  503. what's

  504. happening in

  505. the garden

  506. right now.

  507. Jesus

  508. hasn't lost

  509. any of

  510. them except

  511. Judas because

  512. he's been

  513. protecting them.

  514. He's been

  515. keeping them

  516. safe.

  517. And now,

  518. John says,

  519. what's

  520. happening here

  521. and the

  522. way that

  523. Jesus is

  524. handling that,

  525. that's a

  526. further

  527. fulfillment

  528. of that.

  529. He's

  530. continuing

  531. to do

  532. that.

  533. Now,

  534. I won't

  535. go so

  536. far as

  537. to say

  538. that Jesus

  539. barters or

  540. negotiates

  541. here,

  542. but he

  543. certainly

  544. takes charge

  545. of the

  546. conversation

  547. and turns

  548. it in a

  549. way that

  550. suggests

  551. to them

  552. that it's

  553. quite reasonable

  554. for you

  555. to take

  556. me

  557. and let

  558. them go

  559. because it's

  560. me that

  561. you're looking

  562. for,

  563. right?

  564. This is

  565. amazing to

  566. stop and

  567. think about.

  568. Jesus has

  569. been pouring

  570. out his

  571. heart and

  572. soul to

  573. the Father

  574. in prayer.

  575. He's been

  576. overwhelmed at

  577. the thought of

  578. what's about to

  579. happen to him,

  580. what he's about

  581. to suffer and

  582. endure.

  583. And the

  584. disciples have

  585. not been able

  586. to keep

  587. watch with

  588. him for

  589. even one

  590. hour,

  591. as Jesus

  592. asked.

  593. And yet

  594. here's Jesus

  595. in the middle

  596. of all this

  597. thinking about

  598. their safety

  599. rather than

  600. his own.

  601. This right

  602. here is the

  603. proof that

  604. all that Jesus

  605. has been

  606. saying about

  607. being the

  608. good shepherd

  609. is true.

  610. Let's go

  611. back for just

  612. a moment and

  613. reflect on

  614. those words

  615. back in

  616. John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  617. 10.

  618. Jesus said,

  619. I am the

  620. good shepherd.

  621. The good

  622. shepherd lays

  623. down his

  624. life for

  625. the sheep.

  626. The hired

  627. hand is

  628. not the

  629. shepherd and

  630. does not

  631. own the

  632. sheep.

  633. So when

  634. he sees

  635. the wolf

  636. coming,

  637. he abandons

  638. the sheep

  639. and runs

  640. away.

  641. Then the

  642. wolf attacks

  643. the flock

  644. and scatters

  645. it.

  646. The man

  647. runs away

  648. because he's

  649. a hired

  650. hand and

  651. cares nothing

  652. for the

  653. sheep.

  654. I am

  655. the good

  656. shepherd.

  657. And I

  658. lay down

  659. my life

  660. for the

  661. sheep

  662. is what

  663. Jesus

  664. said.

  665. So here

  666. the wolves

  667. have come

  668. and it's

  669. quite a

  670. pack.

  671. And does

  672. Jesus run

  673. away?

  674. No.

  675. In fact,

  676. it's the

  677. opposite.

  678. He engages

  679. them directly.

  680. He steps

  681. forth and

  682. immediately

  683. diverts their

  684. attention away

  685. from the

  686. flock and

  687. onto himself.

  688. If it's

  689. me you're

  690. looking for,

  691. then let

  692. these men

  693. go.

  694. You just

  695. get a sense

  696. here that

  697. Jesus is

  698. putting himself

  699. right in

  700. the gap,

  701. squarely

  702. between these

  703. armed men

  704. and his

  705. disciples.

  706. He's ready

  707. to offer

  708. himself

  709. willingly

  710. while asking

  711. for his

  712. followers to

  713. be spared.

  714. this is the

  715. proof that

  716. he really

  717. is our

  718. good shepherd.

  719. That he

  720. really does

  721. watch out

  722. for us

  723. and will

  724. do all

  725. that is

  726. needed to

  727. protect us.

  728. Can you

  729. imagine this?

  730. We don't

  731. know exactly

  732. where everyone

  733. was standing

  734. there in the

  735. garden that

  736. night,

  737. but I

  738. imagine

  739. Jesus

  740. perhaps a

  741. little out

  742. in front

  743. of his

  744. disciples and

  745. them just

  746. behind.

  747. He's doing

  748. the talking

  749. can you

  750. imagine if

  751. you were

  752. one of

  753. his

  754. disciples

  755. just

  756. kind of

  757. watching

  758. all this

  759. taking

  760. place?

  761. Like what's

  762. about to

  763. happen here?

  764. And the

  765. way this

  766. conversation

  767. is going,

  768. I imagine

  769. Jesus just

  770. begins to

  771. walk forward

  772. and surrender

  773. himself to

  774. them.

  775. And if I'm

  776. one of the

  777. disciples,

  778. I'm thinking

  779. now what do

  780. we do?

  781. Do we

  782. fight?

  783. should we

  784. run?

  785. John tells

  786. us that

  787. there was

  788. a brief

  789. struggle that

  790. took place.

  791. Peter,

  792. one of the

  793. disciples,

  794. had a

  795. sword and

  796. he pulls

  797. it out and

  798. strikes with

  799. it.

  800. Verse 10,

  801. then Simon

  802. Peter,

  803. who had a

  804. sword,

  805. drew it

  806. and struck

  807. the high

  808. priest's

  809. servant,

  810. cutting off

  811. his right

  812. ear.

  813. The

  814. servant's

  815. name was

  816. Malchus.

  817. Now we

  818. can only

  819. guess at

  820. what Peter

  821. was thinking.

  822. Was it

  823. just gut

  824. instinct that

  825. led him to

  826. do this?

  827. Did he feel

  828. that he might

  829. be a traitor

  830. if he just

  831. let Jesus

  832. be captured

  833. and taken?

  834. And you

  835. can just

  836. imagine that

  837. right in this

  838. moment as

  839. Peter is

  840. striking

  841. Malchus,

  842. every other

  843. man with

  844. their weapon

  845. is just

  846. ready to

  847. jump into

  848. the fray.

  849. and this

  850. is going

  851. to be a

  852. bloodbath.

  853. Probably

  854. some if

  855. not all

  856. of the

  857. disciples

  858. would have

  859. lost

  860. their

  861. lives.

  862. But

  863. Jesus

  864. intervenes.

  865. Verse 11,

  866. Jesus

  867. commanded

  868. Peter,

  869. put your

  870. sword

  871. away.

  872. Or as

  873. Luke has

  874. it also,

  875. no more

  876. of this.

  877. And the

  878. sense we

  879. get here

  880. is that

  881. everyone,

  882. the whole

  883. group,

  884. just

  885. stopped

  886. for a

  887. moment at

  888. Jesus'

  889. command.

  890. According to

  891. Matthew,

  892. Jesus followed

  893. up his

  894. command with

  895. a bit of

  896. a rebuke

  897. to Peter.

  898. Put your

  899. sword back

  900. in its

  901. place,

  902. for all

  903. who draw

  904. the sword

  905. will die

  906. by the

  907. sword.

  908. He

  909. follows it

  910. up with,

  911. do you

  912. think I

  913. cannot

  914. call on

  915. my

  916. father?

  917. And he

  918. will at

  919. once put

  920. at my

  921. disposal

  922. more than

  923. twelve

  924. legions

  925. of angels.

  926. In other

  927. words,

  928. Peter,

  929. I don't

  930. need

  931. you to

  932. defend me

  933. or to

  934. fight for

  935. me.

  936. If this

  937. is just

  938. about us

  939. versus

  940. them,

  941. I could

  942. handle it

  943. myself,

  944. Peter,

  945. without even

  946. lifting a

  947. finger.

  948. Put your

  949. sword away.

  950. Now,

  951. John doesn't

  952. tell us

  953. about this,

  954. but Luke

  955. tells us

  956. that in

  957. this moment,

  958. Jesus actually

  959. goes to

  960. Malchus,

  961. the servant

  962. of the

  963. high priest,

  964. and touches

  965. his ear

  966. and heals

  967. it on

  968. the spot,

  969. basically

  970. undoing

  971. the damage

  972. that Peter

  973. has just

  974. done.

  975. and Jesus

  976. says,

  977. shall I

  978. not

  979. drink

  980. the cup

  981. the

  982. Father

  983. has

  984. given

  985. me?

  986. Shall I

  987. not

  988. drink

  989. the cup

  990. the

  991. Father

  992. has

  993. given

  994. me?

  995. What a

  996. question.

  997. What a

  998. statement.

  999. verse 12.

  1000. Then the

  1001. detachment

  1002. of soldiers

  1003. with its

  1004. commander

  1005. and the

  1006. Jewish

  1007. officials

  1008. arrested

  1009. Jesus.

  1010. They bind

  1011. him and

  1012. they lead

  1013. him away

  1014. and we

  1015. will hear

  1016. what happens

  1017. next,

  1018. next Sunday.

  1019. this was

  1020. the final

  1021. outcome.

  1022. Jesus

  1023. was

  1024. arrested

  1025. and as

  1026. one of

  1027. the other

  1028. gospel

  1029. writers

  1030. mentions,

  1031. his

  1032. disciples

  1033. in this

  1034. moment

  1035. they

  1036. scatter,

  1037. they flee.

  1038. As we

  1039. come to

  1040. the Lord's

  1041. table this

  1042. morning,

  1043. I want to

  1044. help us

  1045. focus in

  1046. on this

  1047. last

  1048. question

  1049. or statement

  1050. of Jesus.

  1051. Shall I

  1052. not drink

  1053. the cup

  1054. the Father

  1055. has given

  1056. me?

  1057. let's

  1058. reflect on

  1059. these words

  1060. for a

  1061. moment.

  1062. At first

  1063. we hear

  1064. a question

  1065. but then

  1066. we notice

  1067. that this

  1068. question is

  1069. really a

  1070. statement.

  1071. He's not

  1072. looking for

  1073. reassurance

  1074. about this

  1075. from the

  1076. disciples,

  1077. he's making

  1078. a statement,

  1079. this is how

  1080. it has

  1081. to go.

  1082. Fighting is

  1083. not an

  1084. option,

  1085. running away

  1086. from this

  1087. is not an

  1088. option.

  1089. I must

  1090. go through

  1091. with this.

  1092. The time

  1093. has come.

  1094. In these

  1095. moments we

  1096. think back

  1097. to when

  1098. Jesus on

  1099. that earlier

  1100. occasion spoke

  1101. about how

  1102. he was going

  1103. to suffer

  1104. and die.

  1105. And do you

  1106. remember how

  1107. Peter back

  1108. then tried

  1109. to rebuke

  1110. Jesus?

  1111. That's the

  1112. whole get

  1113. behind me

  1114. Satan moment.

  1115. And at that

  1116. time Jesus

  1117. rebuked Peter.

  1118. He said to

  1119. him back

  1120. then,

  1121. you do not

  1122. have in

  1123. mind

  1124. the things

  1125. of God

  1126. but the

  1127. things of

  1128. men.

  1129. This is

  1130. the moment

  1131. that Jesus

  1132. was speaking

  1133. of.

  1134. And it

  1135. comes down

  1136. to this.

  1137. Will Jesus

  1138. cling to

  1139. the things

  1140. of God

  1141. or the

  1142. things of

  1143. men?

  1144. Will he

  1145. cling to

  1146. the concerns

  1147. of man?

  1148. How to

  1149. avoid

  1150. personal

  1151. discomfort

  1152. and suffering?

  1153. How to

  1154. beat his

  1155. opponents?

  1156. or will

  1157. he hold

  1158. firmly

  1159. to the

  1160. will of

  1161. God

  1162. the things

  1163. that God

  1164. wants in

  1165. these moments

  1166. no matter

  1167. the cost?

  1168. Shall I

  1169. not drink

  1170. the cup

  1171. the Father

  1172. has given

  1173. me?

  1174. In the

  1175. midst of all

  1176. this tension

  1177. and conflict

  1178. with all

  1179. these armed

  1180. men staring

  1181. him down

  1182. ready to

  1183. pounce on

  1184. him,

  1185. how does

  1186. Jesus see

  1187. the situation?

  1188. According to

  1189. what he

  1190. says,

  1191. he sees

  1192. it as

  1193. coming to

  1194. him from

  1195. the Father,

  1196. given to

  1197. him by

  1198. God,

  1199. his Father.

  1200. This is

  1201. amazing.

  1202. Let's talk

  1203. about the

  1204. cup.

  1205. Jesus uses

  1206. this language

  1207. of the

  1208. cup.

  1209. This

  1210. cup that

  1211. the Father

  1212. is giving

  1213. him to

  1214. drink from.

  1215. What is

  1216. that?

  1217. What does

  1218. that mean?

  1219. There's

  1220. some rich

  1221. meaning to

  1222. this.

  1223. Long

  1224. ago in

  1225. the Old

  1226. Testament

  1227. times,

  1228. language of

  1229. cup was

  1230. often used

  1231. metaphorically

  1232. or poetically

  1233. to refer to

  1234. a person's

  1235. portion.

  1236. Like

  1237. Psalm 16

    Psalms 16:5

  1238. verse 5,

  1239. Lord,

  1240. you alone

  1241. are my

  1242. portion

  1243. and my

  1244. cup.

  1245. you make

  1246. my lot

  1247. secure.

  1248. The cup

  1249. had to

  1250. do with

  1251. a person's

  1252. lot in

  1253. life.

  1254. What God

  1255. had decided

  1256. a person

  1257. should

  1258. receive.

  1259. And

  1260. metaphorically

  1261. speaking,

  1262. what's in

  1263. the cup

  1264. that you

  1265. must drink

  1266. from

  1267. reflects what

  1268. God has

  1269. given for

  1270. you.

  1271. It

  1272. reflects

  1273. your lot.

  1274. So if

  1275. there's

  1276. something good

  1277. in your

  1278. cup,

  1279. well,

  1280. that often

  1281. speaks of

  1282. blessing.

  1283. But if

  1284. there's

  1285. something

  1286. bitter

  1287. or

  1288. poisonous,

  1289. it speaks

  1290. of

  1291. hardship,

  1292. grief,

  1293. betrayal,

  1294. and especially

  1295. judgment.

  1296. Sometimes

  1297. this language

  1298. of cup

  1299. was used

  1300. to refer

  1301. to good

  1302. things,

  1303. like the

  1304. cup of

  1305. salvation

  1306. is mentioned,

  1307. or the

  1308. 23rd Psalm,

  1309. which most

  1310. of you

  1311. know.

  1312. My cup

  1313. overflows.

  1314. Speaking of

  1315. God's

  1316. blessing

  1317. coming so

  1318. abundantly,

  1319. more than I

  1320. need.

  1321. But most

  1322. often in

  1323. the Old

  1324. Testament,

  1325. this metaphor

  1326. of cup

  1327. was used

  1328. to refer

  1329. to judgment,

  1330. like in

  1331. Job 21

    Job 21:20

  1332. verse 20,

  1333. where Job

  1334. speaks about

  1335. the wicked

  1336. and says,

  1337. let their

  1338. own eyes

  1339. see their

  1340. destruction.

  1341. Let them

  1342. drink the

  1343. cup of

  1344. the wrath

  1345. of the

  1346. Almighty.

  1347. Or Psalm

    Psalms 75:8

  1348. 75 verse

  1349. 8,

  1350. in the hand

  1351. of the Lord

  1352. is a cup

  1353. full of

  1354. foaming

  1355. wine,

  1356. mixed with

  1357. spices.

  1358. He pours

  1359. it out,

  1360. and all

  1361. the wicked

  1362. of the

  1363. earth drink

  1364. it down

  1365. to its

  1366. very

  1367. dregs.

  1368. Or

  1369. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 25:15

  1370. 25 verse

  1371. 15,

  1372. this is what

  1373. the Lord,

  1374. the God

  1375. of Israel

  1376. said to

  1377. me,

  1378. take from

  1379. my hand

  1380. this cup

  1381. filled with

  1382. the wine

  1383. of my

  1384. wrath and

  1385. make all

  1386. the nations

  1387. to whom

  1388. I send

  1389. you drink

  1390. it.

  1391. Now there's

  1392. more of

  1393. these,

  1394. we won't

  1395. go into

  1396. all of

  1397. them.

  1398. Altogether

  1399. this language

  1400. of cup

  1401. speaks

  1402. mainly

  1403. of

  1404. judgment.

  1405. It's a

  1406. portion

  1407. that God

  1408. gives to

  1409. the wicked.

  1410. The contents

  1411. of the cup

  1412. is his

  1413. wrath,

  1414. his punishment,

  1415. and those

  1416. who drink

  1417. it are

  1418. brought to

  1419. ruin and

  1420. destruction,

  1421. sorrow and

  1422. disgrace.

  1423. It comes

  1424. as punishment

  1425. for sins.

  1426. But then

  1427. we come

  1428. to Jesus

  1429. and this

  1430. is so

  1431. rich,

  1432. I hope

  1433. we don't

  1434. miss this.

  1435. All this

  1436. that's happening

  1437. to Jesus

  1438. in this

  1439. moment is

  1440. not just

  1441. a tragic

  1442. accident.

  1443. There is

  1444. a cup

  1445. being given

  1446. by the

  1447. Father

  1448. to the

  1449. Son

  1450. to drink.

  1451. This is

  1452. the portion

  1453. assigned to

  1454. Jesus in

  1455. the plan

  1456. of God.

  1457. It is

  1458. the cup

  1459. of God's

  1460. wrath.

  1461. And Jesus

  1462. has just

  1463. been praying

  1464. in the

  1465. garden

  1466. asking God

  1467. to take

  1468. the cup

  1469. away from

  1470. him.

  1471. Yet

  1472. he said

  1473. not my

  1474. will

  1475. but yours

  1476. be done.

  1477. So right

  1478. here and

  1479. now we

  1480. see Jesus

  1481. put action

  1482. to his

  1483. willingness.

  1484. He doesn't

  1485. call on

  1486. his

  1487. father

  1488. for those

  1489. legions

  1490. of angels.

  1491. Instead

  1492. he steps

  1493. forward

  1494. and surrenders

  1495. himself

  1496. to the

  1497. armed

  1498. men.

  1499. This is

  1500. the portion.

  1501. This is

  1502. the lot.

  1503. This is

  1504. the assignment

  1505. that has

  1506. been given

  1507. him by

  1508. his

  1509. father.

  1510. In

  1511. suffering

  1512. as he's

  1513. about to

  1514. suffer,

  1515. Jesus

  1516. will receive

  1517. wrath.

  1518. He will

  1519. receive

  1520. punishment.

  1521. not for

  1522. his own

  1523. sins

  1524. but for

  1525. ours.

  1526. And so

  1527. this is

  1528. Jesus

  1529. saying I

  1530. must

  1531. do this.

  1532. I must

  1533. take

  1534. this.

  1535. This is

  1536. my portion

  1537. from the

  1538. father.

  1539. This is

  1540. the plan.

  1541. This is

  1542. the only

  1543. way for

  1544. you to

  1545. be saved

  1546. from

  1547. drinking

  1548. it

  1549. yourself.

  1550. As the

  1551. prophet

  1552. Isaiah

  1553. foretold,

  1554. Isaiah

  1555. 53,

  1556. surely

  1557. he took

  1558. up our

  1559. pain and

  1560. bore

  1561. our

  1562. suffering

  1563. yet we

  1564. considered

  1565. him punished

  1566. by God,

  1567. stricken

  1568. by him

  1569. and afflicted.

  1570. But he

  1571. was pierced

  1572. for our

  1573. transgressions.

  1574. He was

  1575. crushed

  1576. for our

  1577. iniquities.

  1578. The

  1579. punishment

  1580. that brought

  1581. us peace

  1582. was on

  1583. him

  1584. and by

  1585. his wounds

  1586. we are

  1587. healed.

  1588. We all

  1589. like sheep

  1590. have gone

  1591. astray.

  1592. Each of

  1593. us has

  1594. turned to

  1595. our own

  1596. way

  1597. and the

  1598. Lord has

  1599. laid on

  1600. him

  1601. the

  1602. iniquity

  1603. of us

  1604. all.

  1605. For the

  1606. transgression

  1607. of my

  1608. people

  1609. he was

  1610. punished

  1611. says the

  1612. Lord.

  1613. Shall I

  1614. not drink

  1615. the cup

  1616. the

  1617. father

  1618. has

  1619. given

  1620. me

  1621. says

  1622. Jesus.

  1623. And with

  1624. that said

  1625. he surrenders

  1626. himself to

  1627. these wicked

  1628. and abusive

  1629. men who

  1630. will make

  1631. him suffer

  1632. and put

  1633. him to

  1634. death

  1635. before the

  1636. end of the

  1637. following

  1638. day.

  1639. What do

  1640. you think?

  1641. do you

  1642. think it's

  1643. a coincidence

  1644. that just

  1645. hours earlier

  1646. Jesus

  1647. sat around

  1648. the table

  1649. with his

  1650. disciples

  1651. with his

  1652. own

  1653. cup

  1654. and asked

  1655. his disciples

  1656. to pass it

  1657. around the

  1658. table and

  1659. divide its

  1660. contents

  1661. among them.

  1662. What did

  1663. Jesus say

  1664. about that?

  1665. He said

  1666. this cup

  1667. is the

  1668. new

  1669. covenant

  1670. in my

  1671. blood.

  1672. My

  1673. blood

  1674. which is

  1675. poured out

  1676. for the

  1677. forgiveness

  1678. of sins.

  1679. And then

  1680. he told

  1681. his disciples

  1682. to drink

  1683. it in

  1684. remembrance

  1685. of him.

  1686. The contents

  1687. of Jesus

  1688. cup at

  1689. the Lord's

  1690. supper

  1691. represented

  1692. his blood

  1693. death.

  1694. Jesus

  1695. drank from

  1696. it himself

  1697. that night.

  1698. symbolizing

  1699. that he

  1700. was about

  1701. to surrender

  1702. his life

  1703. to death.

  1704. To drink

  1705. the cup

  1706. of wrath

  1707. being given

  1708. to him

  1709. from the

  1710. Father.

  1711. I don't

  1712. think it's

  1713. a coincidence.

  1714. These

  1715. things are

  1716. tied together.

  1717. Jesus

  1718. drinks

  1719. the cup

  1720. and from

  1721. his portion

  1722. we all

  1723. receive

  1724. the benefit.

  1725. Jesus

  1726. willingly

  1727. chooses

  1728. to suffer

  1729. and die

  1730. for his

  1731. people.

  1732. And we

  1733. who are

  1734. his

  1735. followers

  1736. receive

  1737. what his

  1738. death

  1739. brings.

  1740. Forgiveness

  1741. of our

  1742. sins

  1743. and a

  1744. new

  1745. relationship

  1746. with God.

  1747. That's

  1748. what this

  1749. table

  1750. represents.

  1751. Both the

  1752. bread and

  1753. the cup

  1754. represent

  1755. Jesus'

  1756. death

  1757. but the

  1758. cup

  1759. very

  1760. specially

  1761. speaks

  1762. of the

  1763. kind

  1764. of

  1765. death

  1766. he would

  1767. die.

  1768. That

  1769. wrath

  1770. is about

  1771. to fall

  1772. on him

  1773. for the

  1774. salvation

  1775. of others.

  1776. So we're

  1777. going to

  1778. come now

  1779. to the

  1780. Lord's

  1781. table

  1782. and eat

  1783. and drink

  1784. again from

  1785. it in

  1786. remembrance

  1787. of Jesus.

  1788. If you

  1789. have not yet

  1790. put your

  1791. trust

  1792. in Jesus

  1793. and surrendered

  1794. your heart

  1795. to him

  1796. let me

  1797. encourage you

  1798. to do

  1799. that.

  1800. do you

  1801. see how

  1802. worthy

  1803. of your

  1804. trust

  1805. and your

  1806. heart

  1807. Jesus

  1808. is?

  1809. Do you

  1810. see how

  1811. he is

  1812. the good

  1813. shepherd

  1814. who loves

  1815. his people

  1816. and protects

  1817. them?

  1818. Do you

  1819. see how

  1820. willingly

  1821. he embraces

  1822. this suffering

  1823. and anguish

  1824. of the cross

  1825. for your

  1826. forgiveness

  1827. forgiveness

  1828. for the

  1829. sins that

  1830. we have

  1831. committed

  1832. to be

  1833. forgiven

  1834. to bring

  1835. us back

  1836. to God?

  1837. He is

  1838. absolutely

  1839. worthy of

  1840. your trust

  1841. and your

  1842. heart

  1843. all of it

  1844. and so I

  1845. urge you

  1846. if you

  1847. haven't done

  1848. this yet

  1849. to surrender

  1850. to him

  1851. today

  1852. to believe

  1853. in him

  1854. today

  1855. for all

  1856. of us

  1857. who have

  1858. done that

  1859. we are

  1860. going to

  1861. partake

  1862. together

  1863. again of

  1864. the bread

  1865. and the

  1866. cup

  1867. and we

  1868. do this

  1869. to remember

  1870. Jesus

  1871. and his

  1872. sacrifice

  1873. for us

  1874. so if

  1875. you have

  1876. put your

  1877. trust in

  1878. him

  1879. and believe

  1880. in him

  1881. if you have

  1882. made that

  1883. profession

  1884. that Jesus

  1885. is Lord

  1886. and believe

  1887. in your

  1888. heart

  1889. that God

  1890. raised

  1891. him

  1892. from

  1893. the

  1894. dead

  1895. to save

  1896. you

  1897. then join

  1898. with us

  1899. partake

  1900. with us

  1901. this morning

  1902. we are

  1903. going to

  1904. take a few

  1905. minutes now

  1906. just to

  1907. quietly reflect

  1908. and pray

  1909. I encourage

  1910. you

  1911. talk to

  1912. God

  1913. in the

  1914. quiet

  1915. of these

  1916. moments

  1917. and then

  1918. after a few

  1919. minutes of

  1920. that

  1921. the bread

  1922. and the

  1923. cup

  1924. will be

  1925. passed

  1926. out

  1927. and

  1928. if you

  1929. don't wish

  1930. to partake

  1931. I would

  1932. encourage

  1933. you

  1934. just to

  1935. signal

  1936. with your

  1937. hand

  1938. to those

  1939. serving

  1940. and Dave

  1941. or Charles

  1942. will just

  1943. pass you

  1944. by

  1945. we'll wait

  1946. until

  1947. all have

  1948. been served

  1949. and then

  1950. we'll partake

  1951. together

  1952. inici unexpectedly

  1953. in the

  1954. BER

  1955. Thank you.

  1956. Thank you.

  1957. Thank you.

  1958. Thank you.

  1959. Thank you.

  1960. Thank you.

  1961. Thank you.

  1962. Thank you.

  1963. Thank you.

  1964. Thank you.

  1965. Thank you.

  1966. Thank you.

  1967. Thank you.

  1968. Thank you.

  1969. Thank you.

  1970. Thank you.

  1971. Thank you.
