  1. All right, well, this morning we've finally come to the moment that many of us have been waiting for in the story of Jesus, the resurrection.

  2. John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  3. The last two Sundays we heard from John about what happened the day that Jesus died.

  4. We heard his testimony about how they crucified Jesus.

  5. We heard how the actions of the soldiers confirmed his death and at the same time fulfilled God's ancient words.

  6. We heard how Joseph and Nicodemus prepared Jesus' body for burial and laid it to rest in the tomb nearby.

  7. All of that on the day of preparation just before the Sabbath began in the evening.

  8. Let's now continue the story this morning reading from John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  9. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.

  10. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said,

  11. They've taken the Lord out of the tomb and we don't know where they've put him.

  12. So John tells us that it was early on the first day of the week.

  13. Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus' followers, she goes to the tomb and she discovers that the stone,

  14. which had been rolled in front of the entrance, had been removed.

  15. And what's surprising is just how brief John's description of all this is.

  16. The other three gospel accounts tell us in much more detail what happened there at the tomb that morning.

  17. Now John is writing his gospel much later and so perhaps just felt, you know, it's already been said and so I'm not going to focus on that.

  18. John instead seems to focus his account on what he witnessed that day.

  19. And for him, it all started when Mary Magdalene arrived early in the morning with some shocking news.

  20. But for those of you who maybe aren't as familiar with the story, let me just briefly explain what the other accounts tell us about Mary Magdalene and what happened at the tomb that morning.

  21. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all tell us how a group of women, including Mary, went out to the tomb very early in the morning.

  22. Luke tells us that prior to this, on the evening that Jesus was crucified, these women had gone home and prepared spices and perfumes.

  23. These were to put on Jesus' body to honor him.

  24. But because Jesus died quite close to the time that the Sabbath began, they didn't have the chance to anoint Jesus' body with them.

  25. And so they came together to the tomb on the first day of the week.

  26. There was a discussion among the women.

  27. How are we going to roll the stone away so that we can get access to Jesus' body?

  28. But then, when the women arrive at the tomb, they find that the stone is already rolled away.

  29. According to Luke, at least some of the women entered the tomb, but couldn't find Jesus' body inside.

  30. And then after that, angels appear to the women.

  31. And they announced that Jesus has risen from the dead.

  32. The women, of course, were terrified, yet they were also filled with joy.

  33. Matthew tells us that they go running to report all this to the disciples.

  34. But now as we look closely at John's account from that day,

  35. it seems that there was one woman who had a different experience from the rest that morning.

  36. John tells us that Mary Magdalene went to the tomb,

  37. saw that the stone had been rolled away,

  38. and because of what she saw, she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple,

  39. that's John, the author of this account.

  40. And Mary says to them,

  41. they've taken the Lord out of the tomb,

  42. and we don't know where they've put him.

  43. So Mary doesn't say,

  44. guess what, guys?

  45. We went to the tomb, and we saw angels declaring that Jesus is alive.

  46. And then on the way there,

  47. here, we saw him.

  48. She doesn't say that.

  49. Instead, she says,

  50. they've taken the Lord out of the tomb,

  51. and we don't know where they've put him.

  52. So what does Mary Magdalene know at this point?

  53. She only knows that Jesus' body is missing.

  54. And she suspects that the reason is because someone has taken it.

  55. Perhaps thieves.

  56. Or Jesus' enemies.

  57. And where?

  58. We don't know.

  59. So it would seem then that as we bring these accounts together,

  60. that the women, they get to the tomb,

  61. they see that the stone has been rolled away.

  62. Some of them go in.

  63. They can't find the body of Jesus.

  64. And immediately, Mary Magdalene runs to tell the disciples.

  65. And it seems she must have left them before the angels appeared

  66. to declare the news to the rest of the women at the tomb.

  67. So this is the first thing that John remembers that day.

  68. It's Mary Magdalene showing up to the door of the house,

  69. saying,

  70. someone has stolen Jesus' body.

  71. I know it's probably impossible for us to imagine

  72. how Mary might have felt in those moments.

  73. But let's try.

  74. She's just witnessed

  75. the horrific death

  76. of the wonderful man, Jesus.

  77. The one that she's come to believe in as her Messiah.

  78. His death alone had brought her to anguish

  79. and grief like never before.

  80. But now, can you imagine this?

  81. Just days later,

  82. she goes to the place where he was buried

  83. and finds that his remains are gone.

  84. Can you imagine this?

  85. How would that make you feel

  86. if you went to the cemetery

  87. three days after the death of a loved one

  88. only to find that the headstone is out of place?

  89. There's a wide open hole in the ground.

  90. The casket is open.

  91. There's no body inside.

  92. So Mary Magdalene's mind is racing.

  93. She's running.

  94. Who would do such a thing?

  95. Somebody's taken his body.

  96. Now let's try Peter and John.

  97. Can you imagine what it was like from their perspective?

  98. I doubt they got much for sleep

  99. on the nights following Jesus' death.

  100. Probably the horror of what they had witnessed

  101. was just replaying again and again in their minds.

  102. Tears.

  103. Questions.

  104. Wanderings.

  105. For Peter,

  106. I tried.

  107. I tried to fight in the garden,

  108. but he told me to stop.

  109. He told me to put my sword away.

  110. And again and again,

  111. I imagine the memory of Jesus' piercing gaze

  112. in the courtyard

  113. right after he had denied

  114. having known Jesus.

  115. And then all that followed

  116. as they brutally beat him

  117. and killed him.

  118. For John,

  119. the memory of those words

  120. that Jesus had spoken to him

  121. while up on the cross,

  122. here is your mother.

  123. And the other words too,

  124. I am thirsty.

  125. It is finished.

  126. And the spear.

  127. And the blood.

  128. Can you imagine after all that

  129. and sleepless nights

  130. waking up to the sound

  131. of someone knocking frantically on the door

  132. and you open up

  133. and here is Mary Magdalene

  134. out of breath

  135. fighting back tears

  136. and frantic saying,

  137. somebody has stolen his body.

  138. So Peter and the other disciple

  139. started for the tomb.

  140. Both were running,

  141. but the other disciple outran Peter

  142. and reached the tomb first.

  143. That's, by the way,

  144. one of the clues

  145. that John is the one writing this.

  146. Only he would have known

  147. if he arrived a split second

  148. before Peter.

  149. The other disciple outran Peter,

  150. reached the tomb first.

  151. John bent over

  152. and looked in

  153. at the strips of linen

  154. lying there,

  155. but did not go in.

  156. There's this moment of pause

  157. as John arrives at the tomb

  158. and we don't know

  159. what John is thinking here.

  160. He's looking in,

  161. he's seeing the strips of linen

  162. lying there

  163. where Jesus' body was

  164. and it's like he just

  165. doesn't know what to do.

  166. He freezes.

  167. Who knows?

  168. Maybe he was thinking about

  169. whether it would make him

  170. unclean to go in there

  171. or was he just processing

  172. like, whoa,

  173. Mary's telling the truth.

  174. His body, it's gone.

  175. Verse 6,

  176. Then Simon Peter came along

  177. behind him

  178. and went straight

  179. into the tomb.

  180. He saw the strips of linen

  181. lying there

  182. as well as the cloth

  183. that had been wrapped

  184. around Jesus' head.

  185. The cloth was still

  186. lying in its place,

  187. separate from the linen.

  188. You've got to love Peter.

  189. He may not have been able

  190. to outrun John,

  191. but he was going to get

  192. into that tomb first.

  193. Picture him jumping down

  194. in there

  195. and then just staring,

  196. speechless.

  197. There's the strips of linen

  198. that his body was wrapped in.

  199. There's the head cloth.

  200. Quite literally,

  201. not in this translation,

  202. but in most of the other ones,

  203. the head cloth folded up

  204. in a place by itself.

  205. Hmm.

  206. If this is the doing of thieves,

  207. this is strange.

  208. Why would they have

  209. unwrapped the body

  210. in the middle of the theft?

  211. Why not just take the body

  212. wrapped as it was

  213. if that's what they were after?

  214. And if it was the valuables

  215. that may have been buried

  216. with the body,

  217. wrapped with the body,

  218. I mean,

  219. why not take the head cloth

  220. as well

  221. in the custom of the day?

  222. That was one of the most

  223. valuable things

  224. buried with the person.

  225. Often very ornate,

  226. high-quality cloth.

  227. And did they fold up

  228. the head cloth

  229. during the theft?

  230. Or was that one of the women

  231. who were here earlier

  232. that did this?

  233. Like, what's going on here?

  234. Finally, the other disciple,

  235. John,

  236. who had reached the tomb first,

  237. also went inside.

  238. He saw

  239. and believed.

  240. And then John has

  241. this side comment here

  242. that he makes.

  243. He says,

  244. they still did not understand

  245. from Scripture

  246. that Jesus had to rise

  247. from the dead.

  248. Then the disciples went back

  249. to where they were staying.

  250. So John finally goes

  251. into the tomb

  252. after seeing Peter do it

  253. and he sees for himself,

  254. yeah,

  255. there's nothing in here.

  256. There's nobody in here.

  257. No body.

  258. The cloths lying there.

  259. The head cloths still there.

  260. And in that moment,

  261. John says,

  262. he believed.

  263. Now there's lots of speculation

  264. here about what John believed.

  265. Believed what?

  266. Some suggest

  267. that he just believed

  268. that the body was stolen.

  269. But it can't be.

  270. It's got to be more.

  271. I think John's side comment

  272. in verse 9

  273. gives us a clue

  274. about what he believed.

  275. They still did not understand

  276. from Scripture

  277. that Jesus had to rise

  278. from the dead.

  279. Rise from the dead.

  280. That's what John believed.

  281. He saw.

  282. He saw.

  283. And he believed.

  284. Jesus really had risen

  285. from the dead.

  286. He really had come back

  287. to life.

  288. And I think the side comments

  289. there, you know,

  290. it's kind of an admission.

  291. You know,

  292. up until that point,

  293. even though Jesus

  294. has been talking about

  295. rising from the dead a lot,

  296. I'll be honest,

  297. me, Peter,

  298. the others,

  299. we still hadn't got it.

  300. We still didn't see

  301. that that's how his story

  302. was going to go.

  303. He would die

  304. and then rise back

  305. to life.

  306. So John tells us

  307. that this moment

  308. as he goes down

  309. into the tomb

  310. and looks

  311. at where the body

  312. was laid,

  313. that's the moment.

  314. I believed it.

  315. Now at this point,

  316. I want to zoom out

  317. and switch to

  318. camera 2,

  319. as it were.

  320. The Gospel of Luke

  321. tells us a little bit

  322. about what we just read

  323. from a different angle.

  324. There's a man

  325. named Cleopas

  326. later this very day

  327. walking to a town

  328. nearby called Emmaus

  329. with his friend

  330. and according to Luke,

  331. Jesus appears

  332. to Cleopas

  333. and his friend

  334. and walks with them

  335. on the road

  336. to Emmaus.

  337. But Cleopas

  338. and his friend

  339. don't know

  340. that it's Jesus.

  341. They don't recognize him.

  342. And this is what

  343. Cleopas is saying

  344. to Jesus,

  345. even though he doesn't

  346. know who he's

  347. talking to,

  348. about what happened

  349. earlier this morning.

  350. He says to Jesus,

  351. in addition,

  352. some of our women

  353. amazed us.

  354. They went to the tomb

  355. early this morning

  356. but didn't find

  357. his body.

  358. They came and told us

  359. that they had seen

  360. a vision of angels

  361. who said he was alive.

  362. Then some of our companions

  363. went to the tomb

  364. and found it just as

  365. the women had said.

  366. But they did not see

  367. Jesus.

  368. So this is what

  369. Cleopas and his friend

  370. remembered.

  371. Notice the sequence

  372. here.

  373. The women go to the tomb

  374. early in the morning.

  375. They don't find

  376. his body.

  377. And before some

  378. of our companions

  379. go to verify it,

  380. that's Peter and John,

  381. what happened?

  382. The women,

  383. plural,

  384. came

  385. and told them

  386. that they had seen

  387. this vision of angels

  388. who said that

  389. he was alive.

  390. So there's another

  391. angle here.

  392. There's a context

  393. that Luke supplies.

  394. Before Peter and John

  395. run to the tomb,

  396. they heard from the

  397. women,

  398. plural,

  399. about the angels

  400. saying Jesus was alive.

  401. Now Mary Magdalene

  402. never said anything

  403. about angels

  404. or about Jesus

  405. being alive.

  406. She just said,

  407. they've taken his body

  408. and I don't know where.

  409. So it would seem

  410. that before

  411. any of the angels

  412. appeared to the women

  413. at the tomb,

  414. Mary left and ran.

  415. But then it would also

  416. seem that before

  417. Peter and John

  418. came to the tomb

  419. to verify,

  420. the women had caught up

  421. hot on her heels

  422. and they shared

  423. what they had

  424. seen

  425. on their way.

  426. Now look to John

    John 20:8

  427. chapter 20

  428. verse 8

  429. and I think it makes

  430. a little more sense.

  431. As John

  432. went inside the tomb,

  433. he saw

  434. and believed.

  435. Believed what?

  436. He believed

  437. what the other women

  438. had been reporting

  439. right before this

  440. that they had

  441. seen angels,

  442. that Jesus was alive.

  443. He really had risen

  444. from the dead.

  445. So Mary Magdalene,

  446. it seems,

  447. missed out

  448. on the angels,

  449. on seeing Jesus

  450. alive with the other

  451. women on the way

  452. according to the

  453. Gospel of Matthew.

  454. Or did she?

  455. Verse 11.

  456. Now Mary stood

  457. outside the tomb

  458. crying.

  459. Interestingly,

  460. John doesn't even

  461. tell us that she

  462. came back

  463. to the tomb,

  464. but it's implied

  465. that she must have

  466. followed after

  467. Peter and John.

  468. Peter and John

  469. obviously

  470. ran there

  471. full tilt.

  472. Mary had already

  473. done a fair bit

  474. of running

  475. and probably just

  476. got there

  477. after.

  478. Peter and

  479. perhaps Peter and

  480. John had even

  481. left.

  482. At any rate,

  483. Mary gets to the

  484. tomb and John

  485. tells us that she

  486. stood outside the

  487. tomb crying.

  488. As she wept,

  489. she bent over to

  490. look into the

  491. tomb and saw

  492. two angels

  493. in white

  494. seated where

  495. Jesus' body

  496. had been,

  497. one at the

  498. head

  499. and the

  500. other at

  501. the foot.

  502. They asked

  503. her,

  504. Woman,

  505. why are you

  506. crying?

  507. They've taken

  508. my Lord away,

  509. she said,

  510. and I don't

  511. know where

  512. they've put

  513. him.

  514. At this,

  515. she turned

  516. around and

  517. saw Jesus

  518. standing there,

  519. but she did not

  520. realize that it

  521. was Jesus.

  522. He asked

  523. her,

  524. Woman,

  525. why are you

  526. crying?

  527. Who is it you

  528. are looking for?

  529. Thinking he was

  530. the gardener,

  531. she said,

  532. Sir,

  533. if you've carried

  534. him away,

  535. tell me where

  536. you've put him

  537. and I will get

  538. him.

  539. Jesus said to

  540. her,

  541. Mary.

  542. She turned

  543. toward him

  544. and cried out

  545. in Aramaic,

  546. Rabboni,

  547. which means

  548. teacher.

  549. Jesus said,

  550. Do not

  551. hold on to

  552. me,

  553. for I have

  554. not yet

  555. ascended to

  556. the Father.

  557. Go instead

  558. to my

  559. brothers and

  560. tell them I

  561. am ascending

  562. to my

  563. Father and

  564. your Father,

  565. to my God

  566. and your

  567. God.

  568. Mary Magdalene

  569. went to the

  570. disciples with

  571. the news,

  572. I have seen

  573. the Lord,

  574. and she told

  575. them that he

  576. had said

  577. these things

  578. to her.

  579. So Mary

  580. Magdalene

  581. didn't miss

  582. out.

  583. God had

  584. something special

  585. just for her.

  586. Moments

  587. earlier,

  588. Peter and

  589. John had

  590. been in

  591. the tomb.

  592. They

  593. didn't see

  594. any angels.

  595. They never

  596. saw Jesus.

  597. But now

  598. Mary Magdalene

  599. takes one

  600. more look

  601. into the

  602. tomb,

  603. and can you

  604. imagine the

  605. shock on

  606. her face

  607. as she

  608. sees these

  609. two angelic

  610. figures clothed

  611. in white?

  612. Yes,

  613. in white,

  614. sitting there

  615. on the

  616. place where

  617. Jesus'

  618. body had

  619. been laid.

  620. The angels

  621. ask her why

  622. she's crying,

  623. and Mary

  624. still doesn't

  625. seem to know

  626. the truth of

  627. what's really

  628. happened.

  629. She says,

  630. they've taken

  631. my Lord

  632. away.

  633. I don't

  634. know where

  635. they've put

  636. him.

  637. She still

  638. seems to

  639. think that

  640. somebody's

  641. stolen

  642. Jesus'

  643. body.

  644. And for

  645. some reason,

  646. maybe,

  647. we don't

  648. know,

  649. maybe the

  650. angels are

  651. looking at

  652. her,

  653. and then

  654. they look

  655. up behind

  656. her at

  657. Jesus.

  658. For some

  659. reason,

  660. Mary turns

  661. around and

  662. sees Jesus

  663. standing there.

  664. John tells

  665. us that she

  666. doesn't

  667. recognize him.

  668. The man

  669. says,

  670. why are you

  671. crying?

  672. Who is it

  673. you're looking

  674. for?

  675. We don't

  676. know why

  677. she didn't

  678. recognize Jesus.

  679. There's all

  680. kinds of

  681. thoughts about

  682. this.

  683. Was it

  684. Mary's tears?

  685. Was it

  686. just the

  687. excitement of

  688. the moment?

  689. Was it

  690. that Jesus'

  691. appearance

  692. after he

  693. rose was

  694. slightly

  695. different than

  696. before?

  697. We don't

  698. know.

  699. Whatever it

  700. was, she

  701. didn't

  702. recognize him,

  703. not at

  704. first.

  705. And she

  706. thought,

  707. well, maybe

  708. he's the

  709. gardener that

  710. looks after

  711. this place.

  712. Maybe he

  713. took the

  714. body.

  715. Sir, if

  716. you've carried

  717. him away,

  718. tell me where

  719. you've put

  720. him and I'll

  721. get him.

  722. I'll take

  723. him.

  724. Now, we

  725. don't know

  726. what she was

  727. thinking here,

  728. but everything

  729. changes in

  730. an instant

  731. when Jesus

  732. addresses her

  733. by name.

  734. Perhaps

  735. in the same

  736. way he

  737. always had

  738. said her

  739. name before.

  740. Mary.

  741. Instantly, it's

  742. like the scales

  743. fall from her

  744. eyes.

  745. All of a

  746. sudden, she

  747. realizes that

  748. it's Jesus

  749. right there in

  750. front of her

  751. and she

  752. grabs onto

  753. him, clings

  754. to him, and

  755. won't let

  756. go.

  757. Can you

  758. imagine how

  759. sweet this

  760. moment must

  761. have been?

  762. The man she

  763. watched die,

  764. now alive,

  765. right here,

  766. in my arms.

  767. Jesus

  768. says, do

  769. not hold

  770. on to me

  771. or cling

  772. to me,

  773. for I

  774. have not

  775. yet ascended

  776. to the

  777. father.

  778. Go instead

  779. to my

  780. brothers and

  781. tell them,

  782. I am

  783. ascending to

  784. my father

  785. and your

  786. father, to

  787. my God

  788. and your

  789. God.

  790. Again, there's

  791. a lot of

  792. conjecture about

  793. these words as

  794. well.

  795. How come he

  796. tells Mary not

  797. to hold on

  798. to him?

  799. Is he about

  800. to ascend to

  801. his father

  802. right now?

  803. Some people

  804. kind of see

  805. two ascensions,

  806. that he goes

  807. up to heaven

  808. now and then

  809. he goes up

  810. again 40

  811. days later.

  812. There's a lot

  813. of speculation.

  814. Is it, or

  815. is it something

  816. else?

  817. Is it that

  818. Jesus hasn't

  819. yet been

  820. glorified and

  821. it's not

  822. appropriate for

  823. her to touch

  824. him, but

  825. then why is

  826. it okay for

  827. Thomas just

  828. a week later?

  829. And I'm not

  830. going to go

  831. into all of

  832. that and the

  833. speculation there,

  834. but maybe it's

  835. just something as

  836. simple as this.

  837. Mary doesn't

  838. want to let

  839. go of the

  840. one that she

  841. felt she'd

  842. lost and

  843. she's just

  844. hanging on

  845. for a long

  846. time and

  847. maybe Jesus

  848. is basically

  849. just saying,

  850. you can let

  851. go of me.

  852. I'm not

  853. going anywhere

  854. yet.

  855. I'm going to

  856. be around for

  857. a little while.

  858. Go tell my

  859. disciples.

  860. And Mary does.

  861. She heads back

  862. to where the

  863. disciples are with

  864. this news.

  865. A totally

  866. different message,

  867. a totally different

  868. report than before.

  869. I have seen

  870. the Lord.

  871. Big change.

  872. Well, this is

  873. the first encounter

  874. with the

  875. resurrected Jesus

  876. that John tells

  877. us about in his

  878. gospel.

  879. And it's a very

  880. special moment,

  881. a very personal,

  882. private moment

  883. between Jesus

  884. and Mary Magdalene.

  885. Jesus shows

  886. himself alive

  887. to her even

  888. before he shows

  889. himself alive to

  890. Peter and to

  891. John, the

  892. disciple whom

  893. Jesus loved.

  894. And this is

  895. just the

  896. beginning.

  897. All the

  898. disciples will

  899. see him alive

  900. as well, but

  901. we're going to

  902. save that for

  903. next Sunday.

  904. In the couple

  905. minutes that we

  906. have left here,

  907. what are we to

  908. make of all this?

  909. What are we to

  910. do with this?

  911. What should our

  912. response be?

  913. Well, when we

  914. compare John's

  915. account of the

  916. resurrection to

  917. the other

  918. accounts, Matthew,

  919. Mark, Luke,

  920. we see that it's

  921. quite different.

  922. I'll be honest,

  923. I love Matthew's

  924. account best.

  925. Right off the

  926. get-go, early in

  927. the morning, Matthew

  928. invites you right

  929. into the action,

  930. the angels

  931. appearing, the

  932. excitement.

  933. You can just

  934. feel the joy.

  935. You can feel the

  936. fear.

  937. You can feel the

  938. adrenaline as they

  939. run to tell the

  940. news.

  941. things.

  942. And then, to

  943. see Jesus on the

  944. way, and they

  945. worship him.

  946. I love Matthew's

  947. account, but John's

  948. account is so

  949. different.

  950. John invites us to

  951. consider things from

  952. his perspective.

  953. Instant surprise and

  954. joy all at once right

  955. there in the morning

  956. wasn't how it felt for

  957. everyone.

  958. There were some of

  959. us that day who

  960. never saw the

  961. angels.

  962. angels.

  963. Think about this.

  964. At what point here

  965. does John see

  966. Jesus alive?

  967. We haven't even got

  968. to it yet.

  969. It's coming.

  970. We'll talk about it

  971. next week.

  972. It's later the same

  973. day in the evening.

  974. For Peter, it will be

  975. later this afternoon.

  976. What does John

  977. remember most from

  978. that morning?

  979. He remembers Mary

  980. Magdalene finding

  981. him early in the

  982. morning, telling him

  983. that the body had

  984. been stolen.

  985. He remembers running

  986. to the tomb with

  987. Peter, finding it

  988. empty.

  989. And then, after

  990. going back to where

  991. he was staying, he

  992. remembers Mary

  993. Magdalene coming

  994. back again with a

  995. totally different

  996. report.

  997. I have seen the

  998. Lord.

  999. there was joy, but

  1000. it didn't break into

  1001. John's day in the

  1002. same way.

  1003. There was joy for

  1004. Mary, but it was

  1005. different than for the

  1006. other women.

1007. For John and Peter, I

  1008. mean, they had, think

  1009. about this, they had

  1010. heard what the women

  1011. were claiming.

  1012. They went to the

  1013. tomb.

  1014. No angels.

  1015. No sight of Jesus.

  1016. Luke tells us that

  1017. after Peter went in

  1018. and saw the linens

  1019. lying there, he went

  1020. away wondering to

  1021. himself what had

  1022. happened.

  1023. John tells us,

  1024. though, that when he

  1025. saw the linens lying

  1026. there, he had a

  1027. different response.

1028. He says, that was the

  1029. moment he believed.

  1030. There's a saying in

  1031. English that we have,

  1032. seeing is believing.

  1033. And usually what is

1034. meant by that is that

  1035. until a person actually

  1036. sees something unlikely

  1037. for themselves, doubt

1038. and disbelief are to be

  1039. expected.

  1040. There's something

  1041. powerful about seeing

  1042. something with your own

  1043. eyes, about witnessing

  1044. it firsthand.

1045. And yet God in his

  1046. wisdom decided that not

  1047. everyone would experience

  1048. the resurrection of his

1049. son the same that day.

1050. The men never saw the

  1051. angels, only the

  1052. women.

  1053. And it seems Mary

  1054. Magdalene at first was

  1055. forgotten, missed out.

  1056. You know, sometimes we

1057. may wonder, why is my

  1058. life going so differently

  1059. from that other

  1060. person's life?

  1061. How come this particular

1062. area of my life is such

1063. a struggle, but for that

1064. person it seems so easy?

1065. And yet God in his

  1066. wisdom has arranged our

  1067. lives differently for a

  1068. reason.

1069. And at the end of the

  1070. story, nobody misses out.

1071. Most of the women, on the

  1072. one hand, they couldn't

1073. deny that they'd seen the

  1074. angels saying Jesus was

  1075. alive.

1076. And yet here on the other

1077. side is Peter and John

  1078. and Mary.

  1079. Could this be true?

  1080. They hadn't seen it.

1081. John tells us here with his

  1082. own personal testimony

1083. though, that seeing is not

  1084. required for believing.

1085. In fact, that's what faith

  1086. is.

  1087. It's trusting.

  1088. It's believing the truth

1089. that God has revealed even

1090. when you can't see it.

1091. Even when you don't feel it.

1092. Sometimes God gives us the

  1093. opportunity to see things

  1094. all at once.

1095. Just like the women saw, the

  1096. angels and Jesus.

1097. Other times God arranges our

1098. lives differently so that we

1099. learn to trust him before we

1100. see, before it all makes

1101. sense, before we feel as we're

1102. supposed to feel, like Mary and

  1103. John.

1104. As Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5

    2 Corinthians 5:7

1105. verse 7, he said, we walk by

1106. faith and not by sight.

  1107. What about you?

1108. What are the things that are

1109. going on in your life right now

1110. that you wish you could see?

1111. You wish you could see God's

  1112. purpose for it.

1113. You wish you could know

1114. firsthand how God is using this.

1115. Why is he allowing this?

1116. Why doesn't he do it different

1117. for me like he's doing it for

  1118. someone else?

  1119. Let me encourage you.

1120. Think of Mary Magdalene's story

  1121. that day.

1122. Could it be that God has

  1123. something special for you

1124. like he did for Mary?

  1125. Something just for you?

  1126. Think of John's experience.

1127. In the meantime, while you

1128. wait for your turn, while you

1129. wait for Jesus to appear, to

1130. answer your prayer, to act in

  1131. this circumstance, will you

  1132. trust him?

  1133. Will you believe?

1134. This is John's invitation to

  1135. you.

1136. To do what he did.

1137. To put your trust in Jesus, the

  1138. risen Lord.

1139. Even though you can't see him.

1140. And he's going to have more to

  1141. say about that.

1142. One final thing that really just

1143. struck my heart this morning

1144. as I was reflecting on all of

  1145. this again.

  1146. I was touched.

1147. You know, you look at the other

  1148. accounts of Jesus' resurrection

1149. and in almost every other case,

1150. Jesus appears to a group.

1151. Or in the case of Emmaus, to two

1152. men, a couple, a couple of guys.

1153. Now he does appear to Peter by

1154. himself at some point in the

1155. afternoon, but it's not described

  1156. in detail.

1157. This is the only resurrection

  1158. account, appearance account of

  1159. Jesus to an individual.

1160. And I got thinking about that.

1161. What's the significance of this?

1162. What's the meaning of this?

1163. Was it because Mary was extra

  1164. special?

  1165. Prominent?

  1166. Influential?

  1167. Well, not really.

  1168. I mean, she's not mentioned that

1169. much in the gospel accounts, in the

  1170. story.

1171. In fact, in these days, the men were

1172. regarded as the more prominent in

1173. that culture, in that society.

  1174. She was a woman.

  1175. And who was she?

1176. I mean, we don't really know all the

  1177. details of her life.

1178. All we know is this little snippet

1179. that's told us that she was one who

1180. Jesus had cast seven demons out of.

1181. I got thinking about this.

1182. Jesus made a point of appearing to

  1183. her one-on-one.

1184. Sometimes we may be in that place

1185. where we just, we believe that Jesus

1186. loves the church, the group.

  1187. But what about me?

  1188. The individual?

  1189. Just me.

  1190. Insignificant me.

  1191. Who am I?

1192. Does he really care for me?

1193. That Jesus took time out of this day

1194. to appear to Mary one-on-one, I think

1195. answers the question for us.

  1196. She never missed out.

  1197. She was not forgotten.

1198. Says to us, to each one of us

  1199. as individuals, yes.

  1200. He cares for you.

  1201. He loves you.

  1202. He desires relationship

  1203. with you.

1204. Even if your feelings are telling you

1205. the opposite or something else,

1206. not a single one of you

  1207. is forgotten

  1208. or will miss out.

1209. This is the kind of love

1210. that Jesus, the good shepherd,

  1211. has for his sheep.

  1212. Let's pray.

  1213. Father in heaven,

1214. we thank you for this account

1215. that you've preserved so well for us.

1216. And I pray that you would press it

1217. into each of our hearts.

  1218. Lord, you alone know

1219. the deepest part of the struggles

1220. that we carry with us.

  1221. The hard things.

1222. The moments where we feel alone

  1223. and confused

  1224. and don't know what's going on

1225. or why this is happening.

1226. And I pray that you would speak

  1227. your love

  1228. and your grace

  1229. to each of us.

1230. Just as you did to Mary.

1231. As you made yourself known to her,

1232. would you reveal yourself to us?

1233. Would you let us know

  1234. of your love again

  1235. and your care?

1236. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1237. Amen.

  1238. Amen.
