  1. for the summer. And if you have your Bible with you, I'll invite you to open it up to Psalm chapter 22.

    Psalms 22 chapter mention

  2. If you don't have your Bible with you, you can find one in the bottom of the seat in front of you there.

  3. There won't be any words on the screen this morning, so it might be helpful to you to be able to follow along.

  4. So Psalm chapter 22, and I'm going to read it for us this morning.

    Psalms 22 chapter mention

  5. We'll jump right into the message, and then after that we'll go straight into the Lord's table afterwards.

  6. So Psalm 22, for the director of music, to the tune of the dough of the morning, a Psalm of David.

  7. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?

  8. My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer. By night, but I find no rest.

  9. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One. You are the one Israel praises.

  10. And you, our ancestors, put their trust. They trusted, and you delivered them.

  11. To you, they cried out and were saved. And you, they trusted and were not put to shame.

  12. But I am a worm, and not a man.

  13. Scorned by everyone.

  14. Despised by the people.

  15. All who see me, mock me.

  16. They hurl insults, shaking their heads.

  17. He trusts in the Lord, they say.

  18. Let the Lord rescue him.

  19. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.

  20. Yet you brought me out of the womb.

  21. You made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast.

  22. From birth, I was cast on you.

  23. From my mother's womb, you have been my God.

  24. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near, and there is no one to help.

  25. Many bulls surround me.

  26. Strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.

  27. Roaring lions that tear their prey.

  28. Open their mouths wide against me.

  29. I'm poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint.

  30. My heart has turned to wax.

  31. It has melted within me.

  32. My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.

  33. You lay me in the dust of death.

  34. Dogs surround me.

  35. A pack of villains encircles me.

  36. They pierce my hands and my feet.

  37. All my bones are on display.

  38. People stare and gloat over me.

  39. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.

  40. But you, Lord, do not be far from me.

  41. You are my strength.

  42. Come quickly to help me.

  43. Deliver me from the sword.

  44. My precious life from the power of the dogs.

  45. Rescue me from the mouth of the lions.

  46. Save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

  47. I will declare your name to my people.

  48. In the assembly, I will praise you.

  49. You who fear the Lord, praise him.

  50. All you descendants of Jacob, honor him.

  51. Revere him, all you descendants of Israel.

  52. For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one.

  53. He has not hidden his face from him, but has listened to his cry for help.

  54. From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly.

  55. Before those who fear you, I will fulfill my vows.

  56. The poor will eat and be satisfied.

  57. Those who seek the Lord will praise him.

  58. May your hearts live forever.

  59. All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord.

  60. And all the families of the nations will bow down before him.

  61. For dominion belongs to the Lord.

  62. And he rules over the nations.

  63. All the rich of the earth will feast and worship.

  64. All who go down to the dust will kneel before him.

  65. Those who cannot keep themselves alive.

  66. Posterity will serve him.

  67. Future generations will be told about the Lord.

  68. They will proclaim his righteousness.

  69. Declaring to a people yet unborn.

  70. He has done it.

  71. So we'll go back to the beginning of the psalm.

  72. And we'll start there.

  73. We learn a little bit about the psalm in the superscription.

  74. This is a psalm of David.

  75. David lived about 3,000 years ago.

  76. About 1,000 years before Jesus was born.

  77. And this was a song that he wrote.

  78. And then gave to the director of music.

  79. Probably to be used for worship in Israel.

  80. It even says the tune of the song.

  81. To the dough of the morning.

  82. Unfortunately, the tune, the melody, the rhythm.

  83. All of that is lost to us today.

  84. What we have though are the lyrics.

  85. And they are God's words as well as David's words.

  86. And there's enough in the words alone to touch our hearts and our minds to the core.

  87. This psalm has two distinct parts to it, which I'm sure you notice.

  88. There's verses 1 down to 21, which is the lament part of the psalm.

  89. That's the part where David is pouring out his heart to God in the midst of his troubles.

  90. Asking for help.

  91. And then there's the thanksgiving and worship part, which is the second part, 22 to 31.

  92. It's like the tone just changes after the deliverance has come.

  93. And David can hardly keep it in.

  94. He just worships the Lord.

  95. And we'll get to that, Lord willing.

  96. But let's start here at the beginning.

  97. Where does this song come from?

  98. Well, songs usually come from the heart.

  99. And this one comes from the deep anguish in the heart of David.

  100. My God.

  101. My God.

  102. Why have you forsaken me?

  103. Why are you so far from saving me?

  104. So far from my cries of anguish.

  105. My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer.

  106. By night.

  107. But I find no rest.

  108. Do you feel the anguish and desperation in David's heart as he says these words?

  109. He calls out to God and he basically asks him,

  110. Why have you forgotten me?

  111. He feels as though God has abandoned him.

  112. As if God is just so far away from the trouble that he is in.

  113. And I have been praying.

  114. And I have been asking again and again.

  115. Day after day.

  116. Night after night.

  117. But why haven't you answered me?

  118. I don't know what is going on in all your lives right now.

  119. But if you are going through a really tough time right now.

  120. These words are a comfort.

  121. In a world where men don't cry.

  122. And it's considered awkward to, even inappropriate, to ugly cry in front of others.

  123. To let what's in here come out in front of people.

  124. David puts it on display for the whole nation.

  125. I've been here.

  126. I've felt like this before.

  127. You're not alone.

  128. David experienced it.

  129. Sleepless nights.

  130. Seemingly unanswered prayers.

  131. Some people might look at this cry and think it almost inappropriate to speak to God this way.

  132. Too intimate.

  133. Too personal.

  134. Except that it's right here in the Bible.

  135. We might wonder, is he accusing God of abandonment?

  136. Or of abandonment?

  137. Or of ignoring him?

  138. And it kind of raises the question.

  139. Has God forsaken David in this moment?

  140. Has God not been answering David's prayers?

  141. And it kind of depends on your view of the Psalms.

  142. And how this is both the word of man and the word of God at the same time.

  143. We might come to some different conclusions.

  144. Some will say that for these words to be true.

  145. God really has forsaken David in this moment.

  146. Perhaps because he sinned.

  147. God really isn't answering his prayers.

  148. Perhaps because he's done something.

  149. And he needs to get right with God first.

  150. Others will say, no.

  151. These words are true in the sense of,

  152. they're the thoughts that David really has in his heart.

  153. They accurately describe the feelings that he has right now.

  154. And I think that's the right way to read this.

  155. There are a lot of things said in the Psalms

  156. that seem to convey the feeling truth,

  157. the inward thoughts of the individual,

  158. rather than the fact truth of the circumstance

  159. that that individual is in,

  160. or what's going on between him and God.

  161. And this seems to be the conclusion that David comes to

  162. in the second part of the Psalm.

  163. Just look with me quickly to verse 24.

  164. Here at verse 24, David is praising God.

  165. He's worshiping God, celebrating him.

  166. And then he starts calling on all the people of Israel

  167. to join him in praise.

  168. And why?

  169. David answers in verse 24.

  170. He says,

  171. It's as though David is saying,

  172. how I felt earlier before,

  173. before the answer to my prayers came,

  174. it wasn't the reality.

  175. You hadn't hidden your face from me.

  176. All along, you were watching me.

  177. You were listening to my prayers.

  178. You were seeing me, hearing me.

  179. There's some powerful lessons here for us.

  180. And I think the first and most obvious one is,

  181. don't be afraid, don't hesitate

  182. to just pour out your heart to God.

  183. To tell him what's going on in your heart,

  184. how you're feeling, put words to it.

  185. God can handle us being real with him,

  186. raw with him.

  187. That's lesson number one.

  188. Second, we have to know and we have to understand

  189. that sometimes God's answer,

  190. God's help,

  191. seems a long time in coming.

  192. Feels a long time in coming.

  193. God doesn't always give us what we ask for

  194. when we want it,

  195. when we expect it.

  196. But third,

  197. probably the most powerful lesson

  198. of this whole psalm,

  199. God hasn't forgotten you.

  200. He hasn't been hiding his face from you.

  201. If you belong to God through faith in Jesus Christ,

  202. he does not despise or scorn you

  203. or the things that you're going through.

  204. He doesn't think light of those things.

  205. He doesn't turn his face away from you

  206. when you're in the moment of trouble

  207. as if that's despicable.

  208. That's despicable.

  209. I don't want to look on that.

  210. He sees everything that you're going through

  211. and he hears every prayer that you pray.

  212. He's watching

  213. and he has a purpose

  214. for those things in our lives.

  215. For those who belong to God

  216. through faith in his son Jesus,

  217. this promise holds true

  218. and cannot be broken.

  219. Hebrews 13 verse 5,

    Hebrews 13:5

  220. Never will I leave you.

  221. Never will I forsake you.

  222. It may feel sometimes like he has,

  223. but it's not true.

  224. He is there.

  225. He sees.

  226. He hears.

  227. Moving on from there,

  228. David goes on to reflect

  229. on how God has been faithful in the past.

  230. We see that in verses 3 to 5

  231. and we see more of that in verses 9 and 10.

  232. And I'm just going to skip over this.

  233. We don't have time for everything here,

  234. but basically he thinks about

  235. how God has answered the prayers of his ancestors

  236. and they trusted in him

  237. and God delivered them.

  238. But there's kind of that conflicted tone.

  239. You did that for them,

  240. but what about me?

  241. Why not my prayers?

  242. In verses 9 and 10,

  243. it's reflecting back on his birth.

  244. God, you're right there with me

  245. from the time I was born.

  246. You've been with me all along through my life,

  247. but it's as though he's asking,

  248. where are you now?

  249. As I face death,

  250. as I come to the end,

  251. it seems, of my life.

  252. Some people simply don't understand

  253. the deep anguish of soul

  254. that can come from much suffering and hardship,

  255. from relationship breakdowns,

  256. chronic health troubles,

  257. from stresses and pressures

  258. too numerous to count,

  259. from traumatic things

  260. that have been witnessed or experienced,

  261. or from devastating loss.

  262. Sometimes people will say,

  263. well, just look back

  264. at how God has been faithful in the past.

  265. And usually they mean well.

  266. Sometimes that does work.

  267. That gets our eyes off of how we're feeling

  268. and onto God,

  269. and it changes how we feel,

  270. but sometimes it's not always true.

  271. Try as we may,

  272. we end up here with David

  273. wondering why God seems to be treating me

  274. differently from others.

  275. Why God seems to be treating me differently now

  276. compared to how he did earlier in my life.

  277. Let's talk about the trouble

  278. that David is in for a moment.

  279. David describes it here in verses 6 to 8

  280. and further on as well.

  281. He says,

  282. But I am a worm

  283. and not a man,

  284. scorned by everyone,

  285. despised by the people.

  286. All who see me

  287. mock me.

  288. They hurl insults,

  289. shaking their heads.

  290. What's causing all this anguish of soul?

  291. It's the way that people are treating David.

  292. According to David,

  293. they're treating him

  294. in a way that makes him feel

  295. like he's less than human.

  296. When David says,

  297. I'm a worm,

  298. I think he simply means,

  299. I'm like a despised thing

  300. in their eyes.

  301. Subhuman.

  302. They don't even treat me

  303. with that most basic dignity

  304. and respect that we all deserve.

  305. And what are they doing to him?

  306. They're mocking him.

  307. They're insulting him.

  308. They're shaking their heads.

  309. Who is this?

  310. This is the people,

  311. according to David.

  312. It's all who see me.

  313. This probably took place

  314. before David became king.

  315. There was a time where

  316. King Saul poisoned

  317. the minds of everyone

  318. in the nation against David.

  319. He was spreading slander

  320. about David.

  321. David couldn't go anywhere

  322. without feeling like

  323. he was in trouble,

  324. like people were spying on him

  325. out to get him.

  326. And David gives an example

  327. in verse 8

  328. of the kind of things

  329. that they're saying about him.

  330. He trusts in the Lord.

  331. Let the Lord rescue him.

  332. Let the Lord deliver him

  333. since the Lord delights in him.

  334. So whoever these people are,

  335. it's like they see David's trouble,

  336. but they're not sympathetic at all

  337. to his circumstance.

  338. They aren't going to do anything

  339. to help him.

  340. Just leave him.

  341. If God wants to rescue him,

  342. then let God do it.

  343. After all,

  344. he trusts in God.

  345. They mock his faith

  346. in the Lord.

  347. Not only that,

  348. but they mock

  349. the Lord's delight in David.

  350. Let the Lord deliver him

  351. since he delights in him.

  352. If I had to guess,

  353. I would think that these mockers

  354. probably knew about

  355. how David had been chosen

  356. by God

  357. to be the next king of Israel.

  358. Somehow the word leaked out.

  359. Jonathan knew of it.

  360. Saul,

  361. the current king,

  362. came to know of it.

  363. And the whole people

  364. all over started to know about this.

  365. He's the favored one.

  366. He's the one in whom God delights.

  367. The one God has chosen

  368. to be his king.

  369. But here,

  370. they're mocking him about it.

  371. They're making fun of that

  372. while David is running around

  373. desperately

  374. just trying to stay alive.

  375. In verses 12 to 18,

  376. David describes,

  377. he goes on some more

  378. with this

  379. just talk and description

  380. of what his trouble is.

  381. Verse 12,

  382. he says,

  383. Many bulls surround me.

  384. Strong bulls of Bashan

  385. encircle me.

  386. I guess the bulls

  387. from the region of Bashan

  388. were known to be

  389. the fattest

  390. and largest cattle

  391. in all Israel.

  392. And David piles

  393. on the metaphors here.

  394. He uses three different kinds

  395. of animals.

  396. Strong bulls,

  397. roaring lions

  398. that tear their prey,

  399. open their mouths

  400. wide against me.

  401. Verse 13.

  402. And then in verse 16,

  403. Dogs surround me.

  404. All of these referring

  405. to the same group of people.

  406. And in verse 16,

  407. he describes them as men.

  408. He says,

  409. A pack of villains

  410. encircles me.

  411. The reason David,

  412. I think,

  413. describes them

  414. using these three different

  415. kinds of animals.

  416. I mean,

  417. this is a song.

  418. This is poetry.

  419. This is full of metaphor.

  420. This is how things feel.

  421. I mean,

  422. think about each one

  423. of these animals.

  424. They're dangerous.

  425. Think about the last time

  426. you saw somebody

  427. trying to ride a bull

  428. on TV

  429. or at a rodeo.

  430. I mean,

  431. those things are dangerous.

  432. And here David's saying,

  433. I feel like I'm surrounded.

  434. By many of them.

  435. Like they're encircling me.

  436. Like I'm about to be trampled.

  437. Gored.

  438. Like lions that are roaring at me.

  439. All around me.

  440. Ready to tear their prey.

  441. Ready to rip me to shreds.

  442. Or like dogs.

  443. Hunting in a pack.

  444. Closing in on me.

  445. Ready to gnaw into me

  446. and thirsty for my blood.

  447. And in the midst of this,

  448. we get more from David

  449. about how he feels.

  450. Verse 14.

  451. He says,

  452. I'm poured out like water

  453. and all my bones

  454. are out of joint.

  455. My heart has turned to wax.

  456. It is melted within me.

  457. Again,

  458. we have to remember

  459. that this is poetry.

  460. I think we know it

  461. when we hear some of these words,

  462. but maybe we're not sure.

  463. David is not telling us

  464. that his blood pumping muscle

  465. has actually turned to wax.

  466. This is metaphor.

  467. He's saying,

  468. my courage,

  469. my confidence,

  470. it's melting away.

  471. I'm afraid.

  472. It's melting away

  473. just like,

  474. just like wax

  475. does before a flame.

  476. Similarly,

  477. with his bones

  478. being out of joint,

  479. being poured out like water,

  480. these are all metaphors

  481. describing how he feels.

  482. Now,

  483. some of these

  484. aren't as easy to understand.

  485. There's a huge gap here

  486. in culture.

  487. There's a huge gap in time.

  488. And then there's a huge gap

  489. in language.

  490. And so,

  491. some of these things

  492. we kind of wonder,

  493. what exactly does he mean

  494. with these metaphors?

  495. But all of them describe

  496. the anguish,

  497. the fear,

  498. the emptiness,

  499. the dryness

  500. that David feels.

  501. At the end of verse 15,

  502. he says,

  503. you lay me in the dust of death.

  504. Like God,

  505. in your sovereign working of things,

  506. you've brought me to the end.

  507. This is it.

  508. The writing's on the wall.

  509. And David goes on.

  510. We see a little more of this

  511. in verses 17 and 18.

  512. David describes

  513. just how exposed he feels.

  514. All my bones are on display.

  515. People stare and gloat over me.

  516. They divide my clothes among them

  517. and cast lots for my garment.

  518. Again, metaphor.

  519. Like a man who has been stripped

  520. naked of his clothes,

  521. I feel exposed.

  522. Everybody's staring at me

  523. with contempt

  524. everywhere I go.

  525. There was one time

  526. a guy who helped David out

  527. when he was fleeing from Saul.

  528. He was a priest.

  529. And a whole lot of priests

  530. were killed

  531. because of that one act of kindness.

  532. So you have to know

  533. that David was considered

  534. an untouchable.

  535. You don't have anything

  536. to do with him

  537. or else you'll be in big trouble

  538. with Saul here.

  539. Now we don't know for sure,

  540. but possibly Saul had put out bounties,

  541. hired mercenaries

  542. to help go after him.

  543. That's kind of the sense

  544. we maybe get with verse 18

  545. that there's a competition

  546. almost here.

  547. We want to get his clothes.

  548. We want to have the spoils.

  549. The clothes were often considered

  550. the spoils of killing someone,

  551. getting them.

  552. And this is the infamous

  553. son of Jesse.

  554. Now some people

  555. have a difficult time

  556. reading this

  557. as a real situation

  558. of David's life.

  559. So they might suggest

  560. that well David

  561. didn't actually go through

  562. any of this.

  563. He was just kind of

  564. speaking about Jesus

  565. by the Spirit

  566. and didn't really know

  567. what he was talking about.

  568. I don't think that's right.

  569. I think even though

  570. it's difficult maybe

  571. to imagine how

  572. this could have been

  573. David's song,

  574. David's cry

  575. in the midst of his story

  576. or we might not know

  577. what time of his life

  578. this points to.

  579. I think the key here though

  580. is realizing that David

  581. is speaking with poetic language.

  582. He's speaking with metaphor.

  583. He's not actually surrounded

  584. by canines.

  585. His enemies are human.

  586. They're closing in on him

  587. like a pack of dogs

  588. surround their prey.

  589. He's probably not tied up

  590. for execution

  591. and naked

  592. with every bone on display.

  593. I mean we have to read this

  594. for the kind of writing

  595. that it is.

  596. It's poetry.

  597. He's feeling utterly exposed.

  598. People are looking at him

  599. with the same kind of content

  600. that they would look at

  601. a naked criminal

  602. that's being led off

  603. to execution.

  604. In verse 16

  605. David says

  606. they pierce my hands

  607. and my feet.

  608. And again here

  609. some people look at this

  610. and they just go straight

  611. to the cross.

  612. They assume that this

  613. can't have any possible reality

  614. in the life of David.

  615. But again

  616. it's probably

  617. that we're just so familiar

  618. with the fulfillment

  619. and how this was done

  620. to Jesus

  621. that we take that meaning

  622. and we push it back

  623. into the text.

  624. Now certainly

  625. God intended

  626. to foreshadow

  627. and speak of the way

  628. that his son would die.

  629. There's no doubt about that.

  630. But there's other possibilities here

  631. for how this

  632. had some meaning

  633. in the life of David.

  634. We might look down

  635. to verse 20

  636. where David says

  637. deliver me from the sword.

  638. Perhaps some of these men

  639. that were on the prowl

  640. for David

  641. looking for him

  642. chasing him

  643. hunting him

  644. we don't know

  645. maybe David even had

  646. some skirmishes

  647. with some of them

  648. and had been wounded

  649. on occasion

  650. and just barely escaped

  651. with his life.

  652. Or another possibility

  653. David describes

  654. them like animals

  655. with teeth

  656. lions

  657. eager to tear the prey.

  658. Verse 16

  659. dogs surround me

  660. a pack of villains

  661. encircles me

  662. they pierce my hands

  663. and my feet

  664. pierce with what?

  665. With their teeth

  666. perhaps.

  667. That these men

  668. are just

  669. eager to bite

  670. hand and foot

  671. ready to devour him

  672. possibly that David

  673. was wounded

  674. on occasion.

  675. So these are

  676. utterly desperate times

  677. for David.

  678. He feels as though

  679. his end is near

  680. and

  681. God hasn't been

  682. answering his prayers.

  683. What does David do

  684. in the midst of all this?

  685. He just keeps on

  686. calling out to God.

  687. He keeps on

  688. asking for God's

  689. deliverance.

  690. Verse 19

  691. But you

  692. Lord

  693. do not be far

  694. from me.

  695. You are my strength

  696. come quickly

  697. to help me

  698. deliver me

  699. from the sword

  700. my precious life

  701. from the power

  702. of the dogs.

  703. This is one of

  704. the biggest themes

  705. in all the Psalms.

  706. Whenever we're in trouble

  707. what should we do?

  708. Call out to God.

  709. Ask for his help.

  710. Now we come to

  711. the second part

  712. part two.

  713. In verse 22

  714. the tone of this

  715. whole thing

  716. just changes

  717. instantly.

  718. I will declare

  719. your name

  720. to my people.

  721. In the assembly

  722. I will praise you.

  723. David is not

  724. lamenting anymore.

  725. He is in

  726. worship mode

  727. now.

  728. I'm going to

  729. tell everybody

  730. about my God.

  731. I'm going to

  732. praise him

  733. before everybody.

  734. And then in

  735. verse 23

  736. he starts calling

  737. on everyone

  738. to worship

  739. the Lord

  740. with him.

  741. I love that.

  742. You who fear

  743. the Lord

  744. praise him.

  745. And we're just

  746. kind of left

  747. wondering at this

  748. point what just

  749. happened here?

  750. what changed

  751. so drastically?

  752. One minute

  753. David's crying

  754. out to God

  755. for deliverance

  756. from imminent

  757. death

  758. and the next

  759. minute he's

  760. the worship

  761. leader of

  762. all Israel.

  763. That's actually

  764. the story of

  765. David in a

  766. nutshell.

  767. Something massive

  768. changed.

  769. And David

  770. hints at it

  771. in verse 24.

  772. Why praise him?

  773. Why honor him?

  774. Why revere God?

  775. Why am I now

  776. eager to declare

  777. the name of my

  778. God to everyone?

  779. For he has not

  780. despised or

  781. scorned the

  782. suffering of

  783. the afflicted

  784. one.

  785. He has not

  786. hidden his

  787. face from him

  788. but has listened

  789. to his cry

  790. for help.

  791. This is like

  792. the pinnacle

  793. moment of the

  794. psalm.

  795. God did

  796. deliver David

  797. from all his

  798. troubles.

  799. He answered

  800. David's prayers.

  801. His enemies

  802. didn't get the

  803. best of him

  804. after all.

  805. They closed

  806. in,

  807. perhaps even

  808. wounded him.

  809. They taunted

  810. him.

  811. They gloated

  812. over him.

  813. But David

  814. cried out to

  815. God and

  816. God answered.

  817. And it was

  818. then that David

  819. realized this

  820. truth.

  821. All along

  822. God had not

  823. forgotten him.

  824. God had made

  825. that promise

  826. right from the

  827. beginning when he

  828. was anointed.

  829. He would be

  830. king.

  831. God had not

  832. forsaken him.

  833. He wasn't

  834. hiding his face

  835. from him.

  836. And David's

  837. suffering was

  838. itself precious

  839. and meaningful

  840. and had a

  841. purpose.

  842. Now David

  843. doesn't tell us

  844. about that

  845. great deliverance

  846. but the

  847. historical books

  848. of the Bible

  849. do.

  850. They tell how

  851. God rescued

  852. David time

  853. and time

  854. and time

  855. again from

  856. all his

  857. enemies in

  858. Israel,

  859. later establishing

  860. him as king

  861. on Israel's

  862. throne.

  863. And you can

  864. read about that

  865. in 1 and 2

  866. Samuel.

  867. He did

  868. indeed become

  869. the worship

  870. leader of the

  871. nation so to

  872. speak.

  873. In the second

  874. part of the

  875. psalm here from

  876. verses 25 to

  877. 31 we hear

  878. David just

  879. praising and

  880. worshiping with

  881. all his heart

  882. declaring the

  883. worthiness of

  884. God.

  885. And there's so

  886. much in here I

  887. think we're going

  888. to have to skip

  889. over some of

  890. it but what we

  891. notice is that

  892. it's as though

  893. David says me

  894. praising you right

  895. now is not

  896. enough.

  897. You're worthy

  898. of more.

  899. In fact

  900. generation after

  901. generation they're

  902. going to declare

  903. your praise,

  904. your righteousness.

  905. See that in

  906. 31.

  907. Future generations

  908. will be told about

  909. the Lord.

  910. They will proclaim

  911. his righteousness

  912. declaring to

  913. people that

  914. haven't even been

  915. born what he

  916. has done.

  917. There's this

  918. expansion.

  919. It can't just be

  920. here and now.

  921. It's got to be

  922. down the line

  923. into the future.

  924. He is worthy

  925. of worship

  926. forever.

  927. Generation to

  928. generation.

  929. And then we also

  930. see this expansion

  931. of you know

  932. it's not just

  933. going to be

  934. worship here

  935. in Israel.

  936. It's got to be

  937. bigger than that.

  938. One day the whole

  939. world is going to

  940. praise the Lord.

  941. All the ends of

  942. the earth,

  943. verse 27,

  944. will remember

  945. and turn to the

  946. Lord and all the

  947. families of the

  948. nations will bow

  949. down before him

  950. for dominion

  951. belongs to the

  952. Lord and he

  953. rules over the

  954. nations.

  955. This is how

  956. worthy God is

  957. of worship.

  958. He's the king

  959. says David.

  960. He's ruler of

  961. the whole world.

  962. He really does

  963. deliver those who

  964. look to him,

  965. those who seek

  966. him.

  967. He brings them

  968. through to that

  969. place where they

  970. praise him.

  971. They give him

  972. glory.

  973. Glory.

  974. We're going to

  975. turn now to the

  976. Lord's table.

  977. Probably some of

  978. you are wondering

  979. well how come you

  980. haven't said a word

  981. about Jesus yet in

  982. this psalm?

  983. This is the Jesus

  984. psalm.

  985. Well I've been

  986. leaving it for last.

  987. We want to hear

  988. this from David's

  989. perspective.

  990. But one of the

  991. most cherished

  992. things about this

  993. psalm is really

  994. the way that it

  995. points, it speaks

  996. to the coming

  997. son of David

  998. down the line

  999. a thousand years

  1000. later.

  1001. And it's amazing

  1002. if you've ever

  1003. looked at this

  1004. psalm before

  1005. or seen this

  1006. I mean you know

  1007. the ways that it

  1008. points to Christ.

  1009. Verse 1

  1010. My God, my God

  1011. why have you

  1012. forsaken me?

  1013. These were the

  1014. very words that

  1015. Jesus cried when

  1016. he was on the

  1017. cross.

  1018. That's a whole

  1019. five or ten

  1020. minutes right there

  1021. just thinking

  1022. about what

  1023. that meant.

  1024. That some of

  1025. these kinds of

  1026. emotional realities

  1027. were present in

  1028. the very heart of

  1029. Christ as he

  1030. suffered in anguish

  1031. on the cross.

  1032. Or we could look

  1033. at verse 8

  1034. and the taunts

  1035. that were being

  1036. made, the insults

  1037. that they made

  1038. against David.

  1039. Matthew 27

    Matthew 27:41

  1040. verses 41

  1041. in the same way

  1042. the chief priests

  1043. the teachers of

  1044. the law and the

  1045. elders mocked

  1046. Jesus.

  1047. Verse 43

  1048. He trusts in

  1049. God.

  1050. Let God rescue

  1051. him now if he

  1052. wants him.

  1053. For he said I'm

  1054. the son of God.

  1055. It's amazing

  1056. a thousand years

  1057. later they

  1058. fulfilled the

  1059. very same

  1060. almost the same

  1061. words they used

  1062. to insult

  1063. to mock

  1064. Jesus

  1065. the son of

  1066. David

  1067. the son of

  1068. God

  1069. as he was

  1070. suffering.

  1071. And there are

  1072. many more.

  1073. David describes

  1074. how he was

  1075. encircled.

  1076. There they were

  1077. circled around

  1078. him at the

  1079. cross

  1080. taunting him

  1081. mocking him

  1082. threatening him.

  1083. David talks

  1084. in verse 15

  1085. he says you lay

  1086. me in the dust

  1087. of death.

  1088. For David it

  1089. was imminent

  1090. death.

  1091. For Jesus it

  1092. went beyond

  1093. that.

  1094. It was the

  1095. ultimate.

  1096. He really

  1097. was.

  1098. Laid in the

  1099. dust of

  1100. death.

  1101. He died

  1102. at the

  1103. hands of

  1104. his enemies.

  1105. All my

  1106. bones are

  1107. on display.

  1108. I think

  1109. David meant

  1110. it poetically

  1111. metaphorically

  1112. describing his

  1113. feelings but

  1114. it was true

  1115. for Jesus.

  1116. They stripped

  1117. him of his

  1118. clothes and

  1119. put him up

  1120. high where

  1121. everybody could

  1122. see him.

  1123. He hung

  1124. there naked.

  1125. He bore

  1126. the scorn and

  1127. the gloating of

  1128. people.

  1129. They stared at

  1130. him with

  1131. contempt.

  1132. Just like

  1133. here in

  1134. the psalm.

  1135. And they

  1136. pierced my

  1137. hands and

  1138. feet.

  1139. The one

  1140. we're probably

  1141. most familiar

  1142. with.

  1143. A thousand

  1144. years earlier

  1145. God declared

  1146. the locations

  1147. on his

  1148. body where

  1149. he would

  1150. receive the

  1151. wounds.

  1152. It's

  1153. amazing how

  1154. this psalm

  1155. foreshadows

  1156. the ultimate

  1157. suffering.

  1158. The suffering

  1159. of the son

  1160. of David.

  1161. The one who

  1162. died to

  1163. rescue us

  1164. from our

  1165. guilt and

  1166. from our

  1167. sins.

  1168. David

  1169. found out

  1170. when God

  1171. finally did

  1172. answer his

  1173. prayer that

  1174. he is

  1175. faithful.

  1176. he hadn't

  1177. forsaken

  1178. him.

  1179. He was

  1180. delivered.

  1181. For Jesus

  1182. it went a little

  1183. bit different.

  1184. He was

  1185. delivered too

  1186. but not from

  1187. death.

  1188. Through

  1189. death.

  1190. He died and

  1191. then was raised

  1192. back to life

  1193. from the dead

  1194. and he will be

  1195. the king of this

  1196. great kingdom

  1197. that David

  1198. declares and

  1199. speaks of

  1200. when he

  1201. returns.

  1202. there will

  1203. come that

  1204. moment when

  1205. every knee

  1206. will bow

  1207. every tongue

  1208. will confess

  1209. that Jesus

  1210. is Lord

  1211. to the glory

  1212. of God

  1213. the Father.

  1214. So as we

  1215. come again to

  1216. the table this

  1217. morning I

  1218. want to

  1219. encourage you

  1220. to take a

  1221. few moments

  1222. to talk to

  1223. God in the

  1224. quietness of

  1225. your heart

  1226. to reflect on

  1227. that suffering

  1228. that anguish

  1229. that he went

  1230. through for

  1231. you.

  1232. confess your

  1233. sins to

  1234. him.

  1235. Marvel at

  1236. his plan of

  1237. salvation that

  1238. over a

  1239. thousand years

  1240. before he was

  1241. already thinking

  1242. about doing it

  1243. for you.

  1244. After a few
