  1. All right, as we come together now to look into the Word of God, I invite you to open

  2. your Bibles up to Psalm chapter 19.

    Psalms 19 chapter mention

  3. We're in the Psalms this summer, a different Psalm each day, each Sunday.

  4. And last week we heard a little bit of a lament, and this week we are looking at a Psalm that

  5. really speaks of awe of God.

  6. I'm going to read the passage from Psalm 19, and then we'll go into some thoughts on it.

  7. For the director of music, a Psalm of David, the heavens declare the glory of God.

  8. The skies proclaim the work of His hands.

  9. Day after day they pour forth speech.

  10. Night after night they reveal knowledge.

  11. They have no speech.

  12. They use no words.

  13. No sound is heard from them.

  14. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth.

  15. Their words to the ends of the world.

  16. In the heavens, God has pitched a tent for the sun.

  17. It's like a bridegroom coming out of His chamber.

  18. Like a champion rejoicing to run His course.

  19. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other.

  20. Nothing is deprived of its warmth.

  21. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.

  22. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.

  23. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.

  24. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.

  25. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.

  26. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.

  27. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold.

  28. They are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.

  29. By them, Your servant is warned.

  30. In keeping them, there is great reward.

  31. But who can discern their own errors?

  32. Forgive my hidden faults.

  33. Keep Your servant also from willful sins.

  34. May they not rule over me.

  35. Then I will be blameless.

  36. Innocent of great transgression.

  37. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, Lord.

  38. My rock and my redeemer.

  39. So this song of David has three distinct parts to it.

  40. Now we don't know a lot about Hebrew music in ancient times, whether they had verses and choruses like we do in our songs today.

  41. But it seems as though there are distinct parts, much like some of the verses of How Great Thou Art.

  42. Each one focuses on a different theme.

  43. We see that in here.

  44. The first part that we see is in verses 1 to 6, where David sings about how the heavens proclaim God's glory.

  45. The second part, David seems to focus on a different thing.

  46. Verses 7 to 11.

  47. He sings about how the scriptures proclaim God's glory.

  48. And then finally, the final part, verses 12 to 14, is kind of a personal prayer to God.

  49. David speaking about his own relationship with the Lord and asking for some things.

  50. Now we might wonder if we're just reading through this on our own.

  51. Why does it all of a sudden just change when we get to verse 7?

  52. We don't know the reason, but probably if we try to read this like this is, you know, a systematic theology textbook,

  53. it's just not going to feel right.

  54. Why is he jumping around?

  55. But we have to remember, these are song lyrics.

  56. We have to read them as song lyrics.

  57. The one, I'm not going to call it main point, because it's not really a point,

  58. but the one unifying sentiment of this whole psalm,

  59. is I think David is just simply speaking from the heart,

  60. saying, my glorious God, I stand in awe of you.

  61. And these things that he lays out in each of these parts,

  62. they're the reasons, they're the things that have sparked this awe in David's heart.

  63. So let's see that, starting in the first part, in verse 1.

  64. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  65. The skies proclaim the work of his hands.

  66. We know that David was a shepherd,

  67. which means that he probably spent a lot of time sitting out there in the field,

  68. in the day and through the night,

  69. looking after those sheep,

  70. staring up at the skies.

  71. By night, seeing the stars.

  72. Throughout the day, watching as the sun rose at one end of the heavens

  73. and made its circuit all the way to the other.

  74. And what did David see out there?

  75. Or rather, what did he hear?

  76. Let me paraphrase David's words here.

  77. It's as if he's saying,

  78. when I look up at the heavens,

  79. I hear them speaking.

  80. I hear them declaring how glorious God is.

  81. I hear them shouting out loudly,

  82. just how excellent is the work of your hands, Lord.

  83. According to David, creation speaks.

  84. The things that God has made speak.

  85. And they speak about something in particular.

  86. David says,

  87. the things that God has made speak about his glory.

  88. His excellence, his greatness, his grandeur, his radiance.

  89. They speak of the kind of work that his hands are capable of.

  90. Now, David is looking up here.

  91. Heavens and skies are kind of the two words

  92. that he uses to describe his field of view.

  93. So we'll stick with that for a moment.

  94. When I look up there, says David,

  95. I hear the things that I see shouting loudly,

  96. how glorious you are, God.

  97. How awesome.

  98. How capable you are in what you can fashion

  99. and do with your hands.

  100. David goes on in verse two to say this.

  101. Day after day,

  102. those things up there that I see,

  103. they pour forth speech.

  104. Night after night, they reveal knowledge.

  105. So the message that David hears when he looks up,

  106. it's not just a once in a while thing.

  107. It's an ongoing message.

  108. It's not just a couple simple phrases

  109. that just kind of spark him about who God is.

  110. No, the longer David looks,

  111. the more he hears,

  112. the more he sees about how glorious God is.

  113. As each day passes,

  114. there's yet more to see,

  115. more to reflect on,

  116. more to know.

  117. The things up there have a lot to say

  118. about God and his greatness,

  119. his goodness.

  120. Enough to reveal new things about him

  121. day after day

  122. and night after night.

  123. From there, David says,

  124. they have no speech.

  125. They use no words.

  126. No sound is heard from them.

  127. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,

  128. their words to the ends of the world.

  129. Now there's some variance on the translation here,

  130. but probably it has very little effect

  131. on the overall meaning.

  132. We see two things here

  133. that David wants to convey.

  134. First, and again,

  135. depending a little bit on your translation,

  136. David seems to acknowledge

  137. that those things up there in the sky

  138. that I'm looking at,

  139. the sun, the moon, the stars,

  140. those are things that don't speak.

  141. They don't use words.

  142. They don't have a voice

  143. that you can hear

  144. because they're inanimate objects.

  145. They're impersonal things.

  146. And yet, he says,

  147. they do speak.

  148. There is a voice that we can hear

  149. from them saying things

  150. about who God is.

  151. Speechless things that speak

  152. and a silent voice that is heard.

  153. The second thing that he conveys here

  154. in this, regardless of your translation,

  155. David describes who they speak to,

  156. the audience.

  157. He says,

  158. the things up there speak to all humanity,

  159. everyone on earth.

  160. Their silent voice is heard by everyone.

  161. You get the sense

  162. that it doesn't matter

  163. what language a person speaks,

  164. anywhere on the planet,

  165. all over the globe,

  166. anyone can look up and hear

  167. what these things up there

  168. are saying about how glorious God is,

  169. about how capable he is.

  170. And then at this point in the song,

  171. David goes on to give an example of this,

  172. a specific example.

  173. And using that poetic phrasing in the song,

  174. he points us to the sun.

  175. And he describes from his vantage point

  176. what it's like,

  177. very poetically.

  178. It's like God has pitched a tent

  179. somewhere up there for the sun,

  180. given a home or a dwelling place to the sun.

  181. And from our field of view,

  182. you know it just kind of rises

  183. out of nowhere.

  184. It emerges.

  185. And then it makes its circuit,

  186. its course,

  187. from one end of the heavens

  188. all the way to the other.

  189. And David has two metaphors

  190. that he brings in here.

  191. He describes it like a champion

  192. running its course

  193. and like a bridegroom

  194. emerging out of his chamber.

  195. Now, I'll be the first to admit,

  196. I'm not exactly sure

  197. what David intended

  198. by these two metaphors.

  199. What did he have in mind?

  200. Was it that the sun brings happiness

  201. to all who see it

  202. when it emerges,

  203. like the bridegroom does

  204. when he comes out

  205. and everybody sees him

  206. on the day of his wedding?

  207. Or is it that a champion

  208. is unstoppable?

  209. As he runs his race,

  210. he rejoices knowing

  211. nothing can stop him

  212. or slow him down.

  213. In the same way the sun,

  214. it just keeps that pace

  215. all the way through.

  216. Nothing can stop it

  217. or slow it down.

  218. I don't know about these metaphors,

  219. that's my best guess at them.

  220. You know, some things in the Psalms,

  221. the poetic beauty is lost on us

  222. because of that gap of time

  223. and culture and language.

  224. But that's okay.

  225. David's point seems to be

  226. that God is so awesome,

  227. he is so glorious

  228. because he's the one

  229. who established this thing.

  230. He's the one who put that sun up there,

  231. the ball of fire,

  232. and gave it its home

  233. and established its course

  234. and made it to give warmth

  235. and light.

  236. And if he can do that,

  237. then what kind of a God is he?

  238. How big?

  239. How powerful?

  240. How great?

  241. How kind?

  242. To see that every day,

  243. without fail,

  244. some measure of warmth

  245. touches the earth

  246. and everything on it.

  247. David's inviting us

  248. to listen with him

  249. and to look with him

  250. at one thing

  251. that God has made

  252. and established.

  253. And this is just one example,

  254. according to David,

  255. of how the heavens

  256. declare the glory of God.

  257. Do you hear the awe

  258. and wonder

  259. in the heart of David?

  260. And do you see

  261. where he gets it from?

  262. From looking up in the sky?

  263. Well, there's a broader principle here,

  264. an even larger truth.

  265. It's not just space,

  266. the heavens,

  267. the stuff up there

  268. that declares the glory of God.

  269. In fact,

  270. it's all creation,

  271. all of it.

  272. The things up there

  273. and the things down here

  274. that God has made as well.

  275. All of it is shouting loudly

  276. how excellent,

  277. how wise,

  278. how glorious,

  279. how good,

  280. how powerful God is.

  281. And it all does so

  282. with that same sort of silent voice

  283. that the heavens use.

  284. Now,

  285. the stuff that's up there

  286. might have some unique things

  287. to say about the glory of God.

  288. I grew up watching Star Trek

  289. with my dad

  290. and I used to love

  291. sitting down

  292. and doing that with him.

  293. Now,

  294. I know that Star Trek

  295. is fantasy.

  296. It's fiction.

  297. But there's one thing

  298. that Star Trek

  299. gets absolutely right.

  300. You could spend

  301. lifetimes

  302. and generations

  303. traveling across the heavens,

  304. the vast expanse of space,

  305. and even at nine times

  306. the speed of light,

  307. you'll never get

  308. to the end of it.

  309. There'll always be

  310. a new frontier.

  311. There'll always be more.

  312. Today,

  313. scientists

  314. still have not found

  315. the edge of the universe.

  316. They keep building

  317. bigger and bigger

  318. telescopes

  319. and they keep seeing

  320. more stars,

  321. more galaxies

  322. beyond the ones

  323. that they've already found.

  324. It blows their minds.

  325. It puts awe

  326. in their hearts.

  327. How big is this thing?

  328. So space

  329. is something unique

  330. to say about God

  331. and his glorious nature.

  332. Space is big.

  333. It's

  334. great.

  335. So what does that say

  336. about the one

  337. who made it?

  338. Even bigger.

  339. Even greater.

  340. But now all things

  341. that God has made

  342. declare the glory of God.

  343. not just the things up there

  344. but also the things

  345. down here.

  346. All of it.

  347. They declare

  348. his wondrous ability,

  349. his creative power,

  350. his ability to engineer

  351. and design,

  352. his wisdom

  353. and his understanding.

  354. All of it.

  355. These things

  356. are being declared

  357. constantly

  358. by everything

  359. that God has made

  360. all around us

  361. here on earth.

  362. Every day,

  363. every moment

  364. of every day

  365. by plants

  366. and flowers,

  367. trees,

  368. weather,

  369. wind,

  370. clouds,

  371. rain,

  372. all of the

  373. intricate cycles

  374. without which

  375. sustainability

  376. of life

  377. on this

  378. planet

  379. would fall to pieces.

  380. By birds

  381. and

  382. reptiles,

  383. insects,

  384. fish,

  385. fish,

  386. all of these things

  387. so complex.

  388. Each one of them

  389. having their own

  390. unique way

  391. that they

  392. grow

  393. and develop

  394. and

  395. reproduce

  396. and live together.

  397. And each of these

  398. living things

  399. has its own way.

  400. It's amazing.

  401. Scientists

  402. that don't believe

  403. in God

  404. will tell you

  405. that we still

  406. haven't even

  407. found

  408. every species

  409. on earth.

  410. There's still

  411. more to discover.

  412. All of them

  413. declare the

  414. glory of God.

  415. All of them

  416. are speaking

  417. loudly

  418. about his

  419. excellence,

  420. his power,

  421. who he is,

  422. what he's like,

  423. what he can do.

  424. We're going to just

  425. have one quick

  426. example here.

  427. I'm going to put

  428. a video clip up

  429. about the

  430. hummingbird

  431. from a movie

  432. made by

  433. Illustra Media

  434. on the subject

  435. of flight.

  436. Isn't that amazing?

  437. That's just

  438. one kind of bird,

  439. which happens

  440. to be quite

  441. different from

  442. the rest of them.

  443. that clip

  444. comes from

  445. a video

  446. that explores

  447. all of the

  448. intricacies

  449. inside the

  450. bodies of

  451. birds

  452. that make

  453. them perfectly

  454. suited to

  455. flight.

  456. And,

  457. yeah,

  458. it's a

  459. fantastic film.

  460. You know,

  461. I think of

  462. what we can

  463. do as humans,

  464. what we can

  465. build when it

  466. comes to

  467. flying machines.

  468. It took us

  469. until just

  470. over a hundred

  471. years ago

  472. to build a

  473. flying machine

  474. that could fly

  475. for any real

  476. length of time

  477. and with any

  478. sort of control.

  479. probably some

  480. of you have

  481. seen some

  482. of those

  483. hilarious

  484. movie clips.

  485. Meanwhile,

  486. for thousands

  487. of years,

  488. these little

  489. critters have

  490. been leaping

  491. off branches

  492. and cliffs

  493. and performing

  494. all kinds

  495. of aerial

  496. acrobatics,

  497. diving out

  498. of the sky,

  499. catching fish,

  500. surviving even

  501. the harshest

  502. developments here

  503. on earth.

  504. They've been

  505. here all along

  506. declaring God's

  507. amazing abilities,

  508. his glory,

  509. his power.

  510. But now

  511. think for a

  512. second,

  513. if we can

  514. come to

  515. that place

  516. of awe

  517. about God

  518. just by

  519. looking at

  520. the tongue

  521. of a

  522. hummingbird,

  523. what about

  524. every other

  525. created thing

  526. on earth?

  527. All of

  528. creation is

  529. shouting

  530. loudly

  531. how glorious

  532. God is.

  533. It's speaking

  534. so many things

  535. about him.

  536. the question

  537. is,

  538. have we

  539. been listening?

  540. Have we

  541. been hearing

  542. these many

  543. things?

  544. Or are we

  545. mainly tuned

  546. into the

  547. voices of

  548. man?

  549. So this

  550. is the

  551. first point

  552. of application.

  553. The weather

  554. is beautiful,

  555. summer is

  556. here,

  557. get outside,

  558. get out of

  559. the house,

  560. get out of

  561. the car,

  562. get into

  563. nature,

  564. put away

  565. the screen

  566. which is

  567. mostly filled

  568. with the

  569. stuff of

  570. man,

  571. and look

  572. at the

  573. created

  574. things.

  575. Check out

  576. that tree.

  577. Feel it.

  578. If you're

  579. spry enough,

  580. maybe even

  581. give it a

  582. little climb.

  583. Go to

  584. the lake.

  585. Go

  586. bird

  587. watching.

  588. look at

  589. that bug

  590. a little

  591. closer.

  592. Look up

  593. at the

  594. sunrise

  595. and the

  596. stars.

  597. If you're

  598. stuck inside

  599. the house

  600. watching over

  601. your precious

  602. ones like

  603. Jen and I

  604. are in the

  605. evenings,

  606. use your

  607. screen time to

  608. tune into

  609. something that

  610. will help you

  611. appreciate and

  612. see these

  613. things more

  614. clearly.

  615. Read up on

  616. a critter that

  617. God has made.

  618. Watch a

  619. YouTube video

  620. about the

  621. latest

  622. discoveries in

  623. the human

  624. cell.

  625. Do like my

  626. wife did this

  627. past week and

  628. get yourself

  629. some composting

  630. worms.

  631. Something that

  632. God has made

  633. that you can

  634. just look at

  635. and listen

  636. to and

  637. hear what

  638. God is saying

  639. about himself.

  640. The second

  641. section of

  642. this song

  643. changes the

  644. focus

  645. completely.

  646. It's still

  647. God speaking

  648. to us but

  649. through something

  650. different.

  651. Not through

  652. creation but

  653. through the

  654. law of the

  655. Lord.

  656. Verses

  657. seven.

  658. The law

  659. of the

  660. Lord is

  661. perfect,

  662. refreshing the

  663. soul.

  664. The statutes

  665. of the Lord

  666. are trustworthy,

  667. making wise

  668. the simple.

  669. The precepts

  670. of the

  671. Lord are

  672. right,

  673. giving joy

  674. to the

  675. heart.

  676. The commands

  677. of the

  678. Lord are

  679. radiant,

  680. giving light

  681. to the

  682. eyes.

  683. God

  684. speaks also

  685. through the

  686. scriptures,

  687. the sacred

  688. writings,

  689. the words

  690. that have

  691. come to

  692. us through

  693. the prophets.

  694. And David

  695. makes a

  696. series of

  697. parallel

  698. statements here.

  699. They're all

  700. very similar

  701. in the way

  702. that they're

  703. formed.

  704. And he

  705. uses five

  706. different words

  707. to describe

  708. the scriptures.

  709. The first

  710. one kind of

  711. lets us know

  712. what he's

  713. talking about.

  714. It's the

  715. law of

  716. the Lord.

  717. That is

  718. the collection

  719. of divine

  720. revelation

  721. that God

  722. gave to

  723. Moses

  724. and through

  725. Moses.

  726. Essentially

  727. what David's

  728. talking about,

  729. he's talking

  730. about his

  731. Bible.

  732. But in his

  733. day,

  734. that was just

  735. mostly the

  736. first five

  737. books of

  738. the Bible.

  739. Genesis,

  740. Exodus,

  741. Leviticus,

  742. Numbers,

  743. Deuteronomy.

  744. They called

  745. it the Torah,

  746. which means

  747. the law.

  748. So this is

  749. what David

  750. is talking

  751. about now.

  752. When I

  753. look at

  754. that writing

  755. that you

  756. have given

  757. us, that

  758. revelation

  759. that we

  760. have written

  761. down for

  762. us, this

  763. is what I

  764. see.

  765. And David's

  766. going to

  767. describe it.

  768. He also

  769. uses a few

  770. other words

  771. to describe

  772. the things

  773. that God

  774. has said

  775. in the

  776. law.

  777. Statutes,

  778. precepts,

  779. commands,

  780. decrees.

  781. We won't

  782. go into

  783. detail about

  784. what each

  785. one of

  786. these things

  787. means,

  788. but it

  789. shows that

  790. David

  791. recognizes

  792. there's

  793. variety

  794. about the

  795. kind of

  796. things that

  797. we find

  798. written down

  799. for us

  800. in God's

  801. word.

  802. He

  803. acknowledges

  804. that.

  805. And then

  806. here's what

  807. he has to

  808. say about

  809. God's

  810. word,

  811. about the

  812. things that

  813. God has

  814. said.

  815. those

  816. things are

  817. perfect,

  818. trustworthy,

  819. right,

  820. radiant,

  821. firm.

  822. These

  823. things are

  824. all

  825. positive.

  826. They're

  827. all

  828. admirable

  829. qualities.

  830. essentially,

  831. this is

  832. David's

  833. way of

  834. saying in

  835. the song,

  836. when I

  837. look at

  838. your

  839. scriptures,

  840. when I

  841. spend time

  842. in your

  843. scriptures,

  844. this is

  845. what I

  846. see.

  847. There

  848. are no

  849. errors,

  850. flawless

  851. words.

  852. I can

  853. depend on

  854. what you

  855. have said

  856. here.

  857. These

  858. things are

  859. absolutely

  860. correct and

  861. true.

  862. They are

  863. firm.

  864. they

  865. illuminate

  866. my mind,

  867. my eyes.

  868. They show

  869. me the

  870. best way,

  871. the right

  872. way to

  873. live.

  874. And then

  875. David piles

  876. on top of

  877. all that

  878. these

  879. participial

  880. phrases

  881. to describe

  882. how his

  883. time in

  884. the Bible

  885. has been.

  886. His soul

  887. has been

  888. refreshed.

  889. These

  890. words,

  891. they have

  892. made me

  893. wise.

  894. they have

  895. brought joy

  896. to my

  897. heart.

  898. They give

  899. light to

  900. my eyes.

  901. They let

  902. me see

  903. clearly

  904. in the

  905. world,

  906. in my

  907. life,

  908. how things

  909. should be,

  910. what I

  911. should be

  912. doing.

  913. And again,

  914. with the

  915. poetic

  916. phrasing of

  917. this,

  918. we hear that

  919. same sentiment.

  920. It's as though

  921. David is

  922. saying,

  923. I stand

  924. in awe

  925. of you,

  926. God,

  927. when I

  928. look at

  929. your words,

  930. when I

  931. listen to

  932. the things

  933. that you

  934. have said.

  935. It's

  936. amazing.

  937. Those

  938. things are

  939. so flawless,

  940. so pure,

  941. so right,

  942. so true,

  943. so enlightening.

  944. I've been

  945. so deeply

  946. refreshed

  947. and found

  948. such joy

  949. and wisdom

  950. in them.

  951. They reveal

  952. God's glory

  953. in a way

  954. that's so

  955. powerful.

  956. David goes

  957. on, he

  958. says,

  959. still talking

  960. about God's

  961. words,

  962. words,

  963. they are

  964. more

  965. precious

  966. than

  967. gold,

  968. than

  969. much

  970. pure

  971. gold.

  972. How much

  973. do you

  974. think one

  975. of those

  976. bars is

  977. worth?

  978. Anybody

  979. want to

  980. have a

  981. guess?

  982. If my

  983. dad were

  984. here,

  985. he'd tell

  986. you,

  987. he knows.

  988. One of

  989. those 400

  990. ounce good

  991. delivery,

  992. standard

  993. size,

  994. international

  995. trading

  996. bars of

  997. gold is

  998. worth a

  999. million

  1000. Canadian

  1001. dollars,

  1002. just over.

  1003. Can you

  1004. imagine that

  1005. you had

  1006. one?

  1007. And at

  1008. the same

  1009. time,

  1010. can you

  1011. imagine that

  1012. there was

  1013. no access

  1014. to the

  1015. word of

  1016. God,

  1017. the

  1018. scriptures,

  1019. the Bible,

  1020. on the

  1021. internet?

  1022. We just

  1023. couldn't have

  1024. it.

  1025. It didn't

  1026. happen.

  1027. Can you

  1028. imagine that

  1029. the only

  1030. way to

  1031. get one

  1032. of these,

  1033. they were

  1034. exceedingly

  1035. rare,

  1036. was in

  1037. print.

  1038. And you

  1039. came across

  1040. the opportunity

  1041. to get

  1042. one.

  1043. And the

  1044. guy says

  1045. to you,

  1046. I'll trade

  1047. my copy

  1048. for that

  1049. bar of

  1050. gold.

  1051. Would you

  1052. do it?

  1053. It's a

  1054. high price

  1055. to pay.

  1056. You know

  1057. what David's

  1058. saying here?

  1059. He's saying,

  1060. I'd make

  1061. that trade

  1062. for the

  1063. first five

  1064. books of

  1065. the Bible.

  1066. That's the

  1067. best deal.

  1068. I'm getting

  1069. the better

  1070. end of the

  1071. deal.

  1072. Those words,

  1073. they're your

  1074. words,

  1075. God.

  1076. More

  1077. precious

  1078. than gold,

  1079. than much

  1080. pure gold.

  1081. Would you

  1082. make that

  1083. trade?

  1084. As I was

  1085. thinking about

  1086. this, you

  1087. know, it's

  1088. so easy to

  1089. say, oh

  1090. yeah,

  1091. absolutely I

  1092. would.

  1093. But then

  1094. how often do

  1095. we just see

  1096. the book

  1097. sitting there

  1098. on the

  1099. shelf,

  1100. the table,

  1101. the nightstand,

  1102. and, meh,

  1103. I've got

  1104. better things

  1105. to do

  1106. than read

  1107. that.

  1108. This is

  1109. David's

  1110. feeling about

  1111. the word

  1112. of God.

  1113. He's in

  1114. awe of

  1115. God because

  1116. of the

  1117. things that

  1118. he reads

  1119. in his

  1120. Bible.

  1121. It's so

  1122. precious to

  1123. him.

  1124. Supremely

  1125. valuable.

  1126. It's sweet.

  1127. The sweetest

  1128. thing he

  1129. knows.

  1130. And I

  1131. have said

  1132. this before,

  1133. but I just

  1134. can't not

  1135. say it

  1136. again.

  1137. If you

  1138. don't see

  1139. the Bible

  1140. the way

  1141. David sees

  1142. it here,

  1143. who's seeing

  1144. it right

  1145. for what

  1146. it is?

  1147. You

  1148. or David?

  1149. The answer

  1150. is David's

  1151. the one

  1152. that's seeing

  1153. it right.

  1154. He speaks

  1155. by the

  1156. Spirit of

  1157. God.

  1158. David's

  1159. the one

  1160. that's seeing

  1161. it for

  1162. what it

  1163. really is.

  1164. And sometimes

  1165. we wrestle

  1166. with that.

  1167. We don't

  1168. feel that.

  1169. We don't

  1170. appreciate

  1171. fully what

  1172. it is

  1173. that we

  1174. have here.

  1175. sometimes

  1176. it's

  1177. something we

  1178. have to

  1179. embrace

  1180. by faith

  1181. regardless

  1182. of how

  1183. we feel

  1184. to say

  1185. if I

  1186. don't

  1187. feel like

  1188. it,

  1189. that

  1190. feeling's

  1191. wrong.

  1192. Pick

  1193. it up.

  1194. Another

  1195. way to

  1196. come at

  1197. this,

  1198. if you

  1199. decide not

  1200. to read

  1201. your Bible,

  1202. what are

  1203. you

  1204. depriving

  1205. yourself

  1206. of?

  1207. The

  1208. refreshment

  1209. of soul.

  1210. getting

  1211. wisdom,

  1212. joy,

  1213. the deep

  1214. down in

  1215. the heart

  1216. kind,

  1217. light for

  1218. your eyes.

  1219. A little

  1220. further down,

  1221. the warnings

  1222. that you

  1223. need from

  1224. God to

  1225. stay on

  1226. course in

  1227. life.

  1228. Possibly

  1229. even great

  1230. reward from

  1231. commands that

  1232. you haven't

  1233. even read

  1234. about or

  1235. thought about.

  1236. finally we

  1237. come to the

  1238. third part

  1239. of the

  1240. psalm.

  1241. And this

  1242. will be

  1243. quick here.

  1244. This is the

  1245. part where

  1246. David sings

  1247. about his

  1248. own

  1249. relationship

  1250. with God

  1251. and it

  1252. gets quite

  1253. personal

  1254. and intimate

  1255. here.

  1256. In verse

  1257. 11,

  1258. David reflects

  1259. on how God's

  1260. words in the

  1261. scriptures have

  1262. given him

  1263. those warnings

  1264. that he

  1265. has needed.

  1266. And God's

  1267. word does

  1268. do that.

  1269. It helps us

  1270. see the

  1271. dangers along

  1272. the paths

  1273. of life.

  1274. And then

  1275. David asks

  1276. this rhetorical

  1277. question in

  1278. verse 12.

  1279. He says,

  1280. but who can

  1281. discern their

  1282. own errors?

  1283. sin?

  1284. And the

  1285. answer to this

  1286. question is

  1287. no one

  1288. can.

  1289. We all

  1290. sin.

  1291. We all

  1292. blow it.

  1293. And we do

  1294. it even

  1295. unintentionally

  1296. sometimes,

  1297. not realizing

  1298. it.

  1299. Without God's

  1300. word to help

  1301. us see

  1302. clearly, we

  1303. can be

  1304. completely blind

  1305. and ignorant

  1306. to things in

  1307. our lives,

  1308. to sins that

  1309. we've committed.

  1310. And are

  1311. we guilty?

  1312. Are we

  1313. responsible for

  1314. the wrong

  1315. things that

  1316. we do, even

  1317. if we didn't

  1318. do it

  1319. intentionally?

  1320. Absolutely.

  1321. And so

  1322. David prays to

  1323. God, forgive

  1324. my hidden

  1325. faults.

  1326. Don't count

  1327. those things

  1328. against me.

  1329. Amen.

  1330. Then in

  1331. verse 13,

  1332. David flips

  1333. to the

  1334. other side.

  1335. What about

  1336. the intentional

  1337. things?

  1338. The things I

  1339. know that I

  1340. have been

  1341. doing

  1342. deliberately.

  1343. He says,

  1344. keep your

  1345. servant also

  1346. from willful

  1347. sins, that

  1348. is deliberate

  1349. sins.

  1350. May they not

  1351. rule over

  1352. me.

  1353. I really

  1354. love this

  1355. verse.

  1356. I've got it

  1357. highlighted in

  1358. my Bible.

  1359. Even David,

  1360. the one that

  1361. God called a

  1362. man after his

  1363. own heart,

  1364. even David

  1365. felt the

  1366. pull and

  1367. the draw and

  1368. the allurement

  1369. of sin.

  1370. He felt

  1371. tempted to

  1372. do things he

  1373. knew were

  1374. wrong.

  1375. And so he

  1376. prays, God,

  1377. keep me from

  1378. doing those

  1379. things.

  1380. Guard me from

  1381. them.

  1382. Protect me

  1383. from them.

  1384. Don't let

  1385. those things

  1386. come to rule

  1387. over my

  1388. heart.

  1389. God, if

  1390. you ever

  1391. wrestle with

  1392. the temptation

  1393. to do

  1394. things that

  1395. you know

  1396. are wrong,

  1397. you're not

  1398. the only

  1399. one.

  1400. And this

  1401. is our

  1402. prayer.

  1403. God, keep

  1404. me from

  1405. doing those

  1406. kinds of

  1407. things, from

  1408. falling into

  1409. those habits,

  1410. those patterns.

  1411. Don't let

  1412. me do it.

  1413. And David

  1414. goes on from

  1415. here.

  1416. So what

  1417. have we

  1418. seen and

  1419. heard in

  1420. this song

  1421. of David

  1422. inspired by

  1423. the Holy

  1424. Spirit?

  1425. The overall

  1426. sentiment and

  1427. feeling from

  1428. David is I

  1429. stand in awe

  1430. of you,

  1431. God.

  1432. I see your

  1433. glory in

  1434. creation.

  1435. I see your

  1436. glory in

  1437. your word.

  1438. And so what

  1439. does he do?

  1440. He humbles

  1441. himself before

  1442. the Lord.

  1443. what about

  1444. you?

  1445. Have you

  1446. lost your

  1447. awe of

  1448. God?

  1449. And if

  1450. so, how

  1451. do you get

  1452. it back?

  1453. How do you

  1454. grow that

  1455. awe?

  1456. Maybe you

  1457. have it, but

  1458. how do you

  1459. grow it?

  1460. Go outside

  1461. and look

  1462. and listen

  1463. to creation.

  1464. God is

  1465. speaking

  1466. through it.

  1467. Open up

  1468. your Bible.

  1469. Read.

  1470. Meditate.

  1471. Linger over

  1472. it.

  1473. Till you

  1474. get to that

  1475. same feeling

  1476. that David

  1477. has.

  1478. Ah, I'm

  1479. being refreshed.

  1480. Mmm, now

  1481. I see.

  1482. Now I

  1483. see.

  1484. Maybe you're

  1485. here and if

  1486. you're honest,

  1487. you'd say that

  1488. you've never

  1489. had an awe

  1490. of God.

  1491. Never had a

  1492. reverence of

  1493. him like

  1494. this.

  1495. God is

  1496. calling to

  1497. you.

  1498. Since the

  1499. creation of

  1500. the world,

  1501. God's

  1502. invisible

  1503. qualities,

  1504. his eternal

  1505. power and

  1506. divine nature

  1507. have been

  1508. clearly seen

  1509. being understood

  1510. from what has

  1511. been made

  1512. so that

  1513. people are

  1514. without

  1515. excuse.

  1516. God's

  1517. God's

  1518. love.

  1519. God's

  1520. love.

  1521. God's

  1522. love.

  1523. God's

  1524. love.

  1525. God is

  1526. calling to

  1527. you through

  1528. these words

  1529. of David.

  1530. He is the

  1531. glorious creator.

  1532. He is the

  1533. one.

  1534. He's made

  1535. all that

  1536. wonderful stuff

  1537. around us.

  1538. And he's

  1539. given you

  1540. enough to

  1541. know something

  1542. of the kind

  1543. of God

  1544. that he

  1545. is.

  1546. His power,

  1547. his goodness,

  1548. and it's

  1549. enough to

  1550. leave us

  1551. all with

  1552. no excuse

  1553. for ignoring

  1554. him.

  1555. The good

  1556. news is he

  1557. sent his

  1558. son Jesus

  1559. into our

  1560. world to

  1561. meet us

  1562. face to

  1563. face and

  1564. call us

  1565. back to

  1566. himself because

  1567. he loves

  1568. us.

  1569. And whether

  1570. we believe

  1571. in Jesus

  1572. or not,

  1573. this humble

  1574. posture that

  1575. we see here

  1576. of David

  1577. should be

  1578. ours.

  1579. Lord, I

  1580. know I

  1581. have sinned

  1582. against you

  1583. in countless

  1584. ways, ways

  1585. I don't

  1586. even know.

  1587. Forgive me.

  1588. I don't

  1589. want to

  1590. live doing

  1591. what's wrong

  1592. anymore.

  1593. I want to

  1594. live to

  1595. please you.

  1596. And amazingly,

  1597. Jesus went

  1598. on to

  1599. die for

  1600. us so

  1601. that this

  1602. blamelessness

  1603. that David

  1604. longs for,

  1605. this forgiveness

  1606. could be

  1607. secured for

  1608. us, could

  1609. be a reality

  1610. for anyone

  1611. who will

  1612. turn to

  1613. God and

  1614. accept his

  1615. gracious

  1616. gift.

  1617. This is

  1618. the good

  1619. news of

  1620. God that

  1621. Psalm 19

  1622. prepares us

  1623. for.

  1624. So we're

  1625. going to

  1626. go to

  1627. prayer now.

  1628. Let's

  1629. pray.

  1630. Father in

  1631. heaven, we

  1632. thank you

  1633. that you

  1634. have been

  1635. speaking in

  1636. all kinds

  1637. of ways

  1638. all throughout

  1639. history and

  1640. I pray that

  1641. each one of

  1642. us would

  1643. hear you.

  1644. open our

  1645. eyes.

  1646. This week

  1647. as we go

  1648. into your

  1649. world, open

  1650. our eyes to

  1651. see it.

  1652. Help us to

  1653. pause and

  1654. linger.

  1655. Help us to

  1656. notice what

  1657. you are saying

  1658. about yourself

  1659. in all the

  1660. stuff around

  1661. us.

  1662. Help us to

  1663. value your

  1664. word like

  1665. David, to

  1666. open it up,

  1667. to read it.

  1668. We pray for

  1669. that refreshment.

  1670. Forgive us of

  1671. our sins,

  1672. Lord, the

  1673. things that

  1674. we've done

  1675. that are

  1676. wrong, that

  1677. we know we've

  1678. done wrong, and

  1679. the things that

  1680. we don't even

  1681. know.

  1682. Thank you for

  1683. sending your

  1684. son Jesus to

  1685. die for us.

  1686. We stand in

  1687. awe of you.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. I'll invite the

  1690. worship team to

  1691. come up and

  1692. we'll sing one

  1693. final song

  1694. together.
