  1. We come to the Lord's Word this morning.

  2. We're in the book of Psalms.

  3. So you can open your Bible up to Psalms.

  4. We're in Psalm 91.

  5. Psalm 91.

  6. And I know I usually read through the psalm at the beginning,

  7. but this time we're going to kind of read through it as we go.

  8. Let's jump in.

  9. The first thing that we notice about this psalm

  10. is that there is no superscription at the top.

  11. So we don't know who wrote this.

  12. We don't know what the occasion is.

  13. And we don't know whether it's a song or just a piece of poetry,

  14. a blessing or something perhaps.

  15. So we just have to be content with not knowing some of these things.

  16. And we have to take this psalm as it comes to us.

  17. There seems to be four parts to this psalm.

  18. The first two verses, if you could have your Bible open in front of you,

  19. you can kind of see there's often a break there.

  20. The psalm contains the opening statement

  21. where the author expresses his confidence in God.

  22. Then the next part, verses 3 to 8,

  23. is packed full of these will statements.

  24. And the psalmist makes numerous statements

  25. about how things will go for the person who takes refuge in God.

  26. Then in verse 9, the author restates the main theme of the psalm

  27. and reminds us of just who these promises are for.

  28. And then he goes on to give more will statements

  29. and describes how things will go for the person who really trusts in the Lord.

  30. And then finally, the last part of the psalm, verses 14 to 16,

  31. the will statements continue,

  32. but the one who is saying them changes.

  33. Now it's the Lord who is speaking

  34. about how he will act

  35. in response to the prayers and plights of his people.

  36. And the main theme of this psalm,

  37. the great declaration of it,

  38. is that God is the protector of his people.

  39. So let's see this and hear this

  40. from the words of the psalmist,

  41. starting in verses 1 and 2.

  42. Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High

  43. will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

  44. I will say of the Lord,

  45. He is my refuge and my fortress,

  46. my God in whom I trust.

  47. So the psalmist has something to say.

  48. He has a statement to make,

  49. and it comes to us in verse 2.

  50. I will say of the Lord,

  51. He is my refuge and my fortress.

  52. These two words, refuge and fortress,

  53. speak of the safety and the protection

  54. that are found in the Lord.

  55. Now, it's probably difficult for us

  56. to relate to these two words a little bit,

  57. because we've all been blessed

  58. to know relative peace in our lifetimes.

  59. But if you read through the story of Israel

  60. in the Old Testament,

  61. you'll see that many of those ancient days

  62. were full of war,

  63. battles,

  64. bloodshed,

  65. violence.

  66. The surrounding nations and peoples

  67. would raid and pillage Israel

  68. and each other.

  69. And so the fortified city,

  70. the city of refuge,

  71. was a big deal back then.

  72. That was the place that you and your family

  73. would run to

  74. when you saw the enemy army coming

  75. or raiders coming.

  76. And the sturdy walls

  77. would give you protection

  78. against soldiers and chariots.

  79. Think of the stories of Joshua

  80. and the battle at Jericho

  81. or Jerusalem.

  82. Both were fortified cities

  83. known for their great thick walls

  84. and their towers for defense.

  85. And at various times in Israel's history,

  86. there were many cities like these

  87. fortified with walls.

  88. This was common to them.

  89. So what is the psalmist declaring here

  90. in verse 2?

  91. He's saying,

  92. when I'm looking for shelter,

  93. a hiding place,

  94. a safe place,

  95. where do I go?

  96. Where do I run to?

  97. Not an earthly city,

  98. but a person.

  99. My God.

  100. He is my protector.

  101. He is the one who keeps me safe.

  102. And I trust in His protection.

  103. This is the theme of the entire psalm.

  104. God is the trustworthy,

  105. dependable protector of His people.

  106. And now He launches into these will statements.

  107. These first few will statements

  108. in verses 3 and 4

  109. are about what God will do

  110. for those who trust in Him.

  111. Verse 3.

  112. Surely He will save you

  113. from the fowler's snare

  114. and from the deadly pestilence.

  115. He will cover you

  116. with His feathers

  117. and under His wings

  118. you will find refuge.

  119. His faithfulness

  120. will be your shield

  121. and rampart.

  122. So these are the kinds of things

  123. that God will do

  124. for those who trust in Him.

  125. He will save you

  126. from the fowler's snare.

  127. The psalmist uses

  128. metaphorical language here

  129. and it's drawing on

  130. the situation of birds.

  131. A fowler is a hunter of birds

  132. and in this context

  133. using a snare or a trap

  134. to hunt for birds.

  135. So the enemy is on the prowl

  136. like a hunter

  137. and we are like the bird.

  138. But God is the one

  139. who will save us

  140. from the enemy

  141. and His trap.

  142. In verse 4.

  143. More bird metaphor.

  144. He will cover you

  145. with His feathers

  146. and under His wings

  147. you will find refuge.

  148. I love this picture.

  149. The picture here

  150. is that God will take you

  151. under His loving care

  152. and protection

  153. like a mother bird

  154. does its helpless

  155. little babies.

  156. He will draw you close.

  157. He will keep you safe.

  158. He will be a hiding place

  159. for you

  160. in the time of trouble.

  161. The main point here

  162. in all of this

  163. is that God

  164. is not the kind of God

  165. who will simply

  166. let His people

  167. be caught

  168. and killed

  169. by enemies

  170. and predators

  171. while He turns a blind eye.

  172. He will intervene.

  173. He will save us.

  174. He will protect us

  175. because He cares for us

  176. like we are His very own.

  177. I love the statement here

  178. at the end of verse 4.

  179. His faithfulness

  180. will be your shield

  181. and rampart.

  182. A rampart

  183. is a protective wall.

  184. So God's faithfulness

  185. is like a shield

  186. or barrier

  187. that protects us

  188. from harm and danger.

  189. God can be dependent on

  190. to keep His promises.

  191. He is the one

  192. who comes between us

  193. and trouble

  194. like a deflecting shield,

  195. like an impenetrable barrier.

  196. Then in verses 5 to 8

  197. the psalmist switches

  198. from He will

  199. to now

  200. you will.

  201. So verses 3 and 4

  202. it was God will save you.

  203. He will protect you.

  204. He will shield you.

  205. And now in verses 5

  206. it's

  207. you will not fear

  208. the terror

  209. of night

  210. nor the arrow

  211. that flies by day.

  212. you will not

  213. fear the pestilence

  214. that stalks

  215. in the darkness

  216. nor the plague

  217. that destroys

  218. at midday.

  219. A thousand

  220. may fall at your side

  221. ten thousand

  222. at your right hand

  223. but it will not

  224. come near you.

  225. You will only observe

  226. with your eyes

  227. and see

  228. the punishment

  229. of the wicked.

  230. So with God

  231. protecting you

  232. this is how

  233. it will go for you.

  234. And He gives

  235. two more

  236. will statements.

  237. We'll just look

  238. at the first one

  239. the big one.

  240. You will not fear

  241. and then He lists off

  242. some common dangers

  243. of the day.

  244. You will not fear them

  245. because remember

  246. the Lord

  247. is your shield.

  248. He is your protector.

  249. Let's look at some

  250. of these common dangers

  251. or threats.

  252. He says

  253. you will not fear

  254. the terror

  255. of night.

  256. If we compare

  257. this to another

  258. place in the Bible

  259. where this phrase

  260. is used

  261. it likely refers

  262. to the frequent

  263. threat of

  264. bandits

  265. or thugs

  266. or criminals

  267. thieves

  268. who would use

  269. the cover of darkness

  270. to attack

  271. to rob

  272. to pillage

  273. to kill.

  274. He says

  275. you will not fear

  276. the arrow

  277. that flies

  278. by day.

  279. This probably

  280. referring to

  281. the arrow

  282. shot by archers

  283. in battle.

  284. You will not

  285. fear the pestilence

  286. that stalks

  287. in the darkness

  288. nor the plague

  289. that destroys

  290. at midday.

  291. Both of these

  292. are referring

  293. to fatal diseases

  294. things that spread

  295. invisibly.

  296. Usually

  297. the kind

  298. that result

  299. in death.

  300. Verse 7

  301. A thousand

  302. may fall

  303. at your side

  304. ten thousand

  305. at your right hand

  306. but it will

  307. not come

  308. near you.

  309. Now some people

  310. think that this

  311. refers to

  312. like a battle

  313. people falling

  314. in battle

  315. but most likely

  316. it refers to

  317. the plague

  318. to pestilence

  319. no matter

  320. how many

  321. there are

  322. around you

  323. getting sick

  324. dropping down

  325. from the plague

  326. you will not

  327. fear

  328. because it

  329. will not

  330. come near

  331. you.

  332. Now we may

  333. wonder

  334. why all the

  335. switching back

  336. and forth

  337. between night

  338. and day

  339. darkness

  340. and midday

  341. remember

  342. this is a poem

  343. this is poetry

  344. and this is a

  345. poetic device

  346. called merism

  347. where you kind

  348. of use both

  349. parts

  350. but your

  351. whole point

  352. is about

  353. the whole

  354. we're more

  355. familiar with

  356. the expression

  357. maybe that

  358. you know

  359. I was praying

  360. day and night

  361. that God

  362. would do this

  363. what we really

  364. mean is

  365. all the time

  366. around the

  367. clock

  368. and so it

  369. seems that

  370. this is the

  371. same kind

  372. of idea

  373. that he's

  374. giving here

  375. God's

  376. trustworthy

  377. dependable

  378. protection

  379. enables us

  380. to live

  381. without fear

  382. around the

  383. clock

  384. whether it's

  385. at night

  386. and the

  387. dangers

  388. of night

  389. or during

  390. the day

  391. and the

  392. things that

  393. can happen

  394. in the

  395. day

  396. in a

  397. similar

  398. fashion

  399. we shouldn't

  400. look at these

  401. particular dangers

  402. as being

  403. the only

  404. things

  405. that God

  406. protects us

  407. from

  408. I mean

  409. these are

  410. just a few

  411. samples

  412. of the

  413. possible

  414. dangers

  415. but the

  416. overall point

  417. is that

  418. God protects

  419. his people

  420. from all

  421. kinds of

  422. danger

  423. all kinds

  424. of harm

  425. he is the

  426. shield that

  427. comes between

  428. us and

  429. these things

  430. in life

  431. now I know

  432. that already

  433. some of you

  434. might be

  435. thinking

  436. and the

  437. question might

  438. be coming

  439. up

  440. what about

  441. when bad

  442. things like

  443. these do

  444. happen

  445. to the

  446. righteous

  447. to God's

  448. people

  449. we're going

  450. to get to

  451. that question

  452. in a couple

  453. minutes here

  454. but let's

  455. not miss

  456. let's not

  457. fail to

  458. hear the

  459. main point

  460. of this

  461. section

  462. is that

  463. God protects

  464. his people

  465. around the

  466. clock

  467. from all

  468. kinds

  469. of troubles

  470. and dangers

  471. verse 9

  472. if you say

  473. the Lord

  474. is my

  475. refuge

  476. and you

  477. make the

  478. most high

  479. your dwelling

  480. no harm

  481. will overtake

  482. you

  483. no disaster

  484. will come

  485. near

  486. your tent

  487. for he

  488. will command

  489. his angels

  490. concerning

  491. you

  492. to guard

  493. you in

  494. all your

  495. ways

  496. they will

  497. lift you

  498. up in

  499. their hands

  500. so that

  501. you will

  502. not strike

  503. your foot

  504. against a

  505. stone

  506. you will

  507. tread

  508. on the

  509. lion

  510. and the

  511. cobra

  512. you will

  513. trample

  514. the great

  515. lion

  516. and the

  517. serpent

  518. so the

  519. psalmist

  520. makes it

  521. clear this

  522. protection

  523. is not

  524. enjoyed

  525. by everyone

  526. it's only

  527. those who

  528. say

  529. the Lord

  530. is my

  531. refuge

  532. it's only

  533. those who

  534. make the

  535. most high

  536. their dwelling

  537. those who

  538. trust in

  539. him

  540. those who

  541. live in

  542. him

  543. that's who

  544. these promises

  545. of protection

  546. are for

  547. and then the

  548. psalmist goes

  549. on to make

  550. more wonderful

  551. declarations about

  552. how the Lord

  553. protects his

  554. people

  555. if you

  556. say the

  557. Lord is my

  558. refuge

  559. if you

  560. make him

  561. your

  562. dwelling

  563. no harm

  564. will overtake

  565. you

  566. no disaster

  567. will come

  568. near your

  569. tent

  570. why not

  571. because he

  572. will command

  573. his angels

  574. concerning

  575. you

  576. to guard

  577. you in all

  578. your ways

  579. and his

  580. angels

  581. will do

  582. the job

  583. they will

  584. see to

  585. it

  586. that you

  587. do not

  588. come

  589. to harm

  590. verse 13

  591. takes it a

  592. step beyond

  593. that even

  594. it's not

  595. just about

  596. survival

  597. it's not

  598. just about

  599. bare minimum

  600. protection

  601. it will also

  602. be about

  603. triumph

  604. over the

  605. enemy

  606. you will

  607. tread

  608. on the

  609. lion

  610. and the

  611. cobra

  612. you will

  613. trample

  614. the great

  615. lion

  616. and the

  617. serpent

  618. so god

  619. not only

  620. protects his

  621. people but

  622. he also

  623. in the

  624. end will

  625. give them

  626. victory

  627. over their

  628. enemies

  629. over the

  630. things that

  631. threaten

  632. and endanger

  633. us

  634. now let's

  635. come to

  636. this question

  637. that I know

  638. is probably

  639. percolating in

  640. some of our

  641. minds

  642. what about

  643. the suffering

  644. of the

  645. righteous

  646. because many

  647. look at these

  648. promises and

  649. say oh that's

  650. not true

  651. that sounds

  652. too good to

  653. be true

  654. if this is

  655. true that no

  656. harm will

  657. overtake you

  658. no disaster

  659. will come near

  660. your tent

  661. what about all

  662. the faith

  663. filled people

  664. who have

  665. suffered

  666. and died

  667. from things

  668. like these

  669. and this is a

  670. difficult question

  671. to answer

  672. in fact the

  673. entire book

  674. of Job

  675. is devoted

  676. to this

  677. question

  678. what about

  679. when the

  680. righteous

  681. suffer

  682. calamity

  683. and it's

  684. no fault

  685. of their

  686. own

  687. if God

  688. always protects

  689. his people

  690. all the time

  691. from all kinds

  692. of things

  693. like these

  694. what about

  695. Joseph

  696. who was

  697. sold into

  698. slavery

  699. by his

  700. brothers

  701. and got

  702. stuck in

  703. jail

  704. for years

  705. what about

  706. King David

  707. who was

  708. hunted

  709. and persecuted

  710. by his

  711. wicked

  712. father-in-law

  713. for years

  714. what about

  715. the righteous

  716. prophets

  717. who were

  718. killed

  719. slaughtered

  720. by the

  721. Israelites

  722. what about

  723. the apostles

  724. many of whom

  725. were killed

  726. because of

  727. their devotion

  728. to Jesus

  729. and it's here

  730. that we have

  731. to come to

  732. grips with

  733. five things

  734. five things

  735. that will help

  736. us read

  737. this the

  738. right way

  739. number one

  740. God can

  741. and does

  742. do all

  743. these things

  744. literally

  745. at times

  746. at various

  747. times in

  748. history

  749. verses six

  750. and seven

  751. speak of the

  752. pestilence

  753. and the plague

  754. not even

  755. coming near

  756. people dropping

  757. from it

  758. all around

  759. and yet

  760. there you are

  761. standing safe

  762. is this not

  763. exactly what

  764. happened when

  765. the Israelites

  766. were in

  767. Egypt

  768. the last

  769. several plagues

  770. God targeted

  771. specifically

  772. only on the

  773. Egyptians

  774. they literally

  775. looked around

  776. them and they

  777. saw the

  778. people

  779. the damage

  780. the ruin

  781. the death

  782. and there they

  783. were standing

  784. safely in the

  785. land of Goshen

  786. all was well

  787. so yes

  788. God can do

  789. this

  790. each of these

  791. things literally

  792. and he has

  793. or look at

  794. verse 13

  795. you will tread

  796. on the lion

  797. you will trample

  798. the great lion

  799. it was David

  800. who told

  801. King Saul

  802. that the Lord

  803. one time

  804. helped him

  805. to strike

  806. down a lion

  807. while he was

  808. just a young

  809. boy and he

  810. was tending

  811. his father's

  812. sheep

  813. Daniel was

  814. thrown into

  815. a whole den

  816. of lions

  817. and God

  818. gave him

  819. victory over

  820. them

  821. and how did

  822. he do it

  823. by sending

  824. his angel

  825. to shut

  826. the mouths

  827. of the lion

  828. so God

  829. can

  830. and has

  831. done these

  832. kinds of

  833. things

  834. literally

  835. but the

  836. second thing

  837. to remember

  838. is that

  839. this is

  840. poetry

  841. he's bringing

  842. all of these

  843. things together

  844. poetically

  845. to make a

  846. point

  847. to illustrate

  848. the many

  849. different ways

  850. that God

  851. can and

  852. does protect

  853. his people

  854. the point's

  855. not that God

  856. never allows

  857. plagues

  858. to make

  859. his people

  860. sick

  861. or die

  862. the points

  863. that God

  864. ordinarily

  865. protects his

  866. people from

  867. all kinds

  868. of things

  869. throughout

  870. their lives

  871. this doesn't

  872. mean that

  873. we'll never

  874. get sick

  875. we all know

  876. that

  877. truth be

  878. told

  879. we won't

  880. really know

  881. until the

  882. end

  883. when we are

  884. with God

  885. looking back

  886. on our

  887. lives

  888. just how

  889. many

  890. disasters

  891. he spared

  892. us

  893. from

  894. how many

  895. car accidents

  896. we would

  897. have been

  898. in

  899. had God

  900. not

  901. interrupted

  902. us

  903. and made

  904. us late

  905. how many

  906. times on the

  907. job we could

  908. have been

  909. fatally injured

  910. had his

  911. angels not

  912. been present

  913. there

  914. intervening

  915. in the

  916. moment

  917. in the

  918. ways that

  919. we didn't

  920. even see

  921. so we

  922. need to

  923. know that

  924. this is

  925. poetry

  926. which

  927. taken

  928. all

  929. together

  930. is

  931. making

  932. a

  933. grand

  934. statement

  935. God

  936. protects

  937. his

  938. people

  939. all

  940. the

  941. time

  942. around

  943. the

  944. clock

  945. in

  946. all

  947. kinds

  948. of

  949. ways

  950. throughout

  951. their

  952. lives

  953. third

  954. we need

  955. to see

  956. that this

  957. is a

  958. particular

  959. kind

  960. of

  961. poetry

  962. it's

  963. wisdom

  964. poetry

  965. there are

  966. a number

  967. of

  968. psalms

  969. that

  970. are

  971. kind

  972. of

  973. all

  974. together

  975. on

  976. this

  977. a

  978. kind

  979. of

  980. poetry

  981. in

  982. the

  983. bible

  984. that

  985. contains

  986. sayings

  987. principles

  988. proverbs

  989. that are

  990. generally

  991. true

  992. but not

  993. always

  994. without

  995. exception

  996. let's

  997. look

  998. quickly

  999. at

  1000. psalm

  1001. 112

  1002. for

  1003. an

  1004. example

  1005. there

  1006. it

  1007. says

  1008. blessed

  1009. are

  1010. those

  1011. who

  1012. fear

  1013. the

  1014. lord

  1015. who

  1016. find

  1017. great

  1018. delight

  1019. in

  1020. his

  1021. commands

  1022. their

  1023. children

  1024. will

  1025. be

  1026. mighty

  1027. in

  1028. the

  1029. land

  1030. the

  1031. generation

  1032. of

  1033. the

  1034. upright

  1035. will

  1036. be

  1037. blessed

  1038. wealth

  1039. and

  1040. riches

  1041. are

  1042. in

  1043. their

  1044. houses

  1045. and

  1046. their

  1047. righteousness

  1048. endures

  1049. forever

  1050. does

  1051. this

  1052. mean

  1053. that

  1054. those

  1055. who

  1056. fear

  1057. the

  1058. lord

  1059. will

  1060. always

  1061. be

  1062. rich

  1063. i think

  1064. we all

  1065. know

  1066. of course

  1067. not

  1068. but

  1069. generally

  1070. those

  1071. who

  1072. fear

  1073. the

  1074. lord

  1075. and

  1076. find

  1077. great

  1078. delight

  1079. in

  1080. his

  1081. commands

  1082. will

  1083. grow

  1084. wealthier

  1085. from

  1086. generation

  1087. to

  1088. generation

  1089. because

  1090. of the

  1091. way

  1092. that

  1093. god

  1094. leads

  1095. us

  1096. to

  1097. work

  1098. and

  1099. to

  1100. manage

  1101. our

  1102. money

  1103. and

  1104. to

  1105. treat

  1106. others

  1107. and

  1108. how

  1109. we

  1110. use

  1111. our

  1112. possessions

  1113. but that

  1114. doesn't

  1115. mean that

  1116. we will

  1117. never

  1118. face

  1119. ruin

  1120. or

  1121. hardship

  1122. like

  1123. job

  1124. did

  1125. let's

  1126. come

  1127. back

  1128. to

  1129. our

  1130. psalm

  1131. psalm

    Psalms 91:10

  1132. 91

  1133. verse

  1134. 10

  1135. it

  1136. says

  1137. if

  1138. you

  1139. make

  1140. the

  1141. lord

  1142. if

  1143. you

  1144. say

  1145. the

  1146. lord

  1147. is

  1148. my

  1149. refuge

  1150. if

  1151. you

  1152. make

  1153. him

  1154. your

  1155. dwelling

  1156. no

  1157. harm

  1158. will

  1159. overtake

  1160. you

  1161. no

  1162. disaster

  1163. will

  1164. come

  1165. near

  1166. your

  1167. tent

  1168. does

  1169. this

  1170. mean

  1171. that

  1172. the

  1173. person

  1174. who

  1175. makes

  1176. god

  1177. his

  1178. refuge

  1179. will

  1180. never

  1181. suffer

  1182. harm

  1183. or be

  1184. affected

  1185. by

  1186. disaster

  1187. no

  1188. this

  1189. is the

  1190. way

  1191. god

  1192. ordinarily

  1193. deals

  1194. with his

  1195. people

  1196. he protects

  1197. them from

  1198. harm

  1199. he keeps

  1200. disaster

  1201. away

  1202. from

  1203. him

  1204. it's

  1205. the

  1206. general

  1207. principle

  1208. of how

  1209. he

  1210. operates

  1211. but

  1212. again

  1213. it's

  1214. not

  1215. without

  1216. exceptions

  1217. look

  1218. at

  1219. job

  1220. look

  1221. at

  1222. joseph

  1223. look

  1224. at

  1225. the

  1226. apostles

  1227. look

  1228. at

  1229. the

  1230. prophets

  1231. so

  1232. we

  1233. need

  1234. to

  1235. read

  1236. this

  1237. as

  1238. the

  1239. kind

  1240. of

  1241. writing

  1242. that

  1243. it

  1244. is

  1245. it's

  1246. wisdom

  1247. poetry

  1248. which

  1249. tells

  1250. us

  1251. the

  1252. way

  1253. god

  1254. usually

  1255. ordinarily

  1256. deals

  1257. with

  1258. his

  1259. people

  1260. number

  1261. four

  1262. we

  1263. need

  1264. to

  1265. know

  1266. that

  1267. god

  1268. has

  1269. a

  1270. long

  1271. term

  1272. plan

  1273. he

  1274. has

  1275. a

  1276. long

  1277. term

  1278. plan

  1279. of

  1280. salvation

  1281. and

  1282. protection

  1283. for

  1284. all

  1285. his

  1286. people

  1287. for

  1288. every

  1289. child

  1290. of

  1291. his

  1292. who

  1293. suffers

  1294. harm

  1295. or

  1296. disaster

  1297. there

  1298. is

  1299. a

  1300. way

  1301. that

  1302. god

  1303. will

  1304. make

  1305. good

  1306. on

  1307. all

  1308. of

  1309. these

  1310. statements

  1311. all

  1312. of

  1313. these

  1314. will

  1315. statements

  1316. there

  1317. there's

  1318. an

  1319. ultimate

  1320. sense

  1321. in

  1322. which

  1323. for

  1324. all

  1325. his

  1326. people

  1327. the

  1328. end

  1329. of

  1330. their

  1331. stories

  1332. will

  1333. be

  1334. yes

  1335. god

  1336. did

  1337. this

  1338. for

  1339. me

  1340. he

  1341. watched

  1342. over

  1343. me

  1344. he

  1345. protected

  1346. me

  1347. he

  1348. gave

  1349. me

  1350. the

  1351. victory

  1352. over

  1353. everything

  1354. even

  1355. death

  1356. let

  1357. me show

  1358. you

  1359. what

  1360. jesus

  1361. said

  1362. on

  1363. one

  1364. occasion

  1365. to

  1366. his

  1367. disciples

  1368. this

  1369. from

  1370. the

  1371. gospel

  1372. of

  1373. luke

    Luke 21:16

  1374. chapter

  1375. 21

  1376. verse

  1377. 16

  1378. he

  1379. was

  1380. talking

  1381. to

  1382. the

  1383. apostles

  1384. and

  1385. he

  1386. said

  1387. to

  1388. them

  1389. you

  1390. will

  1391. be

  1392. betrayed

  1393. even

  1394. by

  1395. parents

  1396. brothers

  1397. and

  1398. sisters

  1399. relatives

  1400. and

  1401. friends

  1402. and

  1403. they

  1404. will

  1405. put

  1406. some

  1407. of

  1408. you

  1409. to

  1410. death

  1411. everyone

  1412. will

  1413. hate

  1414. you

  1415. because

  1416. of

  1417. me

  1418. but

  1419. not

  1420. a

  1421. hair

  1422. of

  1423. your

  1424. head

  1425. will

  1426. perish

  1427. stand

  1428. firm

  1429. and

  1430. you

  1431. will

  1432. win

  1433. life

  1434. you

  1435. hear

  1436. that

  1437. they

  1438. will

  1439. put

  1440. some

  1441. of

  1442. you

  1443. to

  1444. death

  1445. but

  1446. not

  1447. a

  1448. hair

  1449. of

  1450. your

  1451. head

  1452. will

  1453. perish

  1454. stand

  1455. firm

  1456. and

  1457. you

  1458. will

  1459. win

  1460. life

  1461. what's

  1462. Jesus

  1463. saying

  1464. here

  1465. calamity

  1466. suffering

  1467. and

  1468. yes

  1469. even

  1470. death

  1471. at the

  1472. hands

  1473. of

  1474. enemies

  1475. will

  1476. happen

  1477. at

  1478. times

  1479. for

  1480. his

  1481. people

  1482. but

  1483. these

  1484. things

  1485. don't

  1486. win

  1487. over

  1488. his

  1489. people

  1490. not

  1491. in

  1492. the

  1493. long

  1494. term

  1495. not

  1496. in

  1497. the

  1498. ultimate

  1499. in

  1500. the

  1501. end

  1502. even

  1503. death

  1504. can't

  1505. beat

  1506. God's

  1507. people

  1508. every

  1509. hair

  1510. of

  1511. your

  1512. head

  1513. will

  1514. be

  1515. restored

  1516. will

  1517. be

  1518. given

  1519. back

  1520. to

  1521. you

  1522. how

  1523. does

  1524. it

  1525. happen

  1526. as

  1527. Jesus

  1528. said

  1529. John

  1530. 6

  1531. 38

  1532. this

  1533. the

  1534. lastw

  1535. day

  1536. for my Father's will

1537. is that everyone who looks to the Son

  1538. and believes in Him

  1539. shall have eternal life

1540. and I will raise them up

  1541. at the last day.

1542. So this is the ultimate way

1543. that God will keep all of these

1544. will statements to His people.

1545. Psalm 91 is not saying

1546. that God's people will never suffer,

1547. that they will never die.

1548. It's saying that God is our protector.

1549. He generally keeps His people

  1550. from calamity and death

  1551. throughout their lives

  1552. and when He doesn't,

1553. He has a good and loving purpose

1554. and one day when Jesus comes back,

  1555. He will finally undo

1556. the effects that any sickness

1557. or plagues had on our bodies.

1558. He will finally undo any damage

1559. that any enemy caused to our bodies,

1560. whether by arrow, sword, bullet,

  1561. bomb, car accident,

1562. He will finally bring us

1563. to that place of triumph

  1564. over all of it.

  1565. Jesus will.

  1566. In the short term,

  1567. it may seem,

1568. it may feel like cancer

  1569. is overtaking you.

1570. But did it really overtake you

1571. if by the power of Jesus

1572. you are raised back to life

  1573. from the dead

  1574. when He returns?

1575. So we need to read these promises

  1576. in light of God's long-term plan

  1577. of salvation and protection.

  1578. And finally,

1579. we need to see that God's protection

  1580. doesn't always mean

  1581. being kept from calamity,

  1582. but sometimes it means

  1583. being kept through calamity.

1584. And there's pointers to this reality

  1585. throughout the psalm.

  1586. Verse 3 says,

  1587. He will save you

  1588. from the fowler's snare.

  1589. But does that mean

1590. that you won't even be caught in it

  1591. for a moment, ever?

  1592. Verse 5 says,

1593. You will not fear the arrow

  1594. that flies by day,

  1595. but does that mean

1596. that you'll never see war

1597. or be in the midst

  1598. of a crossfire?

  1599. Verse 12 says,

1600. God's angels will lift you up

1601. so that you don't strike your foot

  1602. against a stone.

  1603. But does that mean

1604. that you are never allowed

1605. to fall from the rooftop?

  1606. Verse 13,

1607. You will tread on the lion

  1608. and the serpent.

  1609. But does that mean

1610. that you will never see

  1611. or face the lion

  1612. or the serpent?

1613. Or does it only mean

  1614. that in the end

  1615. you'll have the victory

  1616. over the lion

  1617. by God's safekeeping power?

  1618. Verse 15 is perhaps

  1619. the clearest statement

  1620. of this truth.

1621. He will call on me

1622. and I will answer him.

1623. I will be with him

  1624. in trouble.

  1625. I will deliver him

  1626. and honor him.

1627. God will be with us

  1628. in trouble,

1629. in the midst of it.

  1630. Meaning that at times,

  1631. yes, we will see

  1632. and face difficulty,

  1633. hardship,

1634. but God is with us in it

  1635. and ultimately he will

1636. deliver us out of it,

  1637. all of it.

  1638. Verse 16,

  1639. With long life

  1640. I will satisfy him

  1641. and show him

  1642. my salvation.

  1643. Does this mean

  1644. that God will never

  1645. allow his people

  1646. to die young?

  1647. I think we know

  1648. the answer to that

  1649. is no.

  1650. But God will keep

1651. his promise of long life

  1652. and salvation

  1653. to all his people.

  1654. It'll just come

  1655. a little differently

  1656. than we thought.

  1657. ultimate long life,

  1658. eternal life,

  1659. resurrection

  1660. from the dead

  1661. kind of life

  1662. when Jesus returns.

  1663. So God's protection

  1664. doesn't always mean

  1665. being kept

  1666. from trouble.

  1667. Sometimes it means

  1668. being kept

  1669. through trouble.

  1670. God is faithful.

  1671. He always keeps

  1672. his promises.

  1673. He may not always

  1674. keep them

  1675. in the way

  1676. that we would expect.

  1677. But at the end

  1678. of it all,

  1679. when we look back,

  1680. we will never doubt

  1681. that he was faithful,

  1682. that he kept

  1683. his word.

  1684. We'll look back

  1685. on Psalm 91

  1686. and say yes

  1687. and amen.

  1688. That's how the Lord

  1689. treated me

  1690. all my life.

  1691. His love

  1692. never fails.

  1693. He always keeps,

  1694. always guards,

  1695. always protects

  1696. his people.

  1697. people.

  1698. The question is,

  1699. are you

  1700. one of his people?

  1701. Have you run

  1702. to him,

  1703. the one who is

  1704. the shelter,

  1705. the hiding place,

  1706. the fortress?

  1707. Have you made him

  1708. your safety,

  1709. your protector?

  1710. Maybe you're wondering,

  1711. well,

1712. how do I do that?

  1713. Well,

1714. he kind of tells us

  1715. all through the psalm

  1716. here,

  1717. if you're listening

  1718. closely,

  1719. in verse 2,

  1720. my God in whom

  1721. I trust.

  1722. It's about believing.

  1723. It's about putting

  1724. your trust

  1725. in him

  1726. and in the son

  1727. that he later

  1728. sent,

  1729. Jesus.

  1730. Verse 15,

  1731. we become his

  1732. by calling on him

  1733. and his promise

  1734. is that he will

  1735. answer

  1736. and so that's

  1737. simply a prayer.

  1738. Lord,

  1739. save me.

  1740. Be my refuge.

  1741. Be my God.

  1742. And his promise

  1743. is yes,

  1744. I will answer.

  1745. I will deliver you.

  1746. I will satisfy you

  1747. with long life.

  1748. I will show you

  1749. my salvation.

  1750. Verse 14,

  1751. because he loves me,

  1752. says the Lord,

  1753. I will rescue him.

  1754. Do you love

  1755. the Lord?

  1756. Do you love Jesus?

  1757. That word kind of

  1758. has a sense of

  1759. cling to in love.

  1760. Are you clinging

  1761. to the Lord Jesus?

  1762. If so,

  1763. then he is

  1764. your faithful

  1765. protector

  1766. in all things.

  1767. And it doesn't matter

  1768. what life

  1769. throws at us.

  1770. Let's drive it

  1771. all the way home.

  1772. Most of us here

  1773. don't fear

  1774. plague

  1775. or

  1776. diseases,

  1777. arrows,

  1778. snakes,

  1779. lions.

  1780. None of these

  1781. are common

  1782. in our lives today.

  1783. Maybe cancer.

  1784. But what is common?

  1785. What are those things

  1786. that we are tempted

  1787. to fear?

1788. The Lord is my refuge

  1789. and fortress,

  1790. my savior

  1791. and protector.

  1792. We need not fear

  1793. car accidents,

  1794. cancer.

  1795. We need not fear

  1796. when the bank account

  1797. gets low

  1798. or when the vehicle

  1799. breaks down

1800. on the side of the road.

  1801. We need not fear

  1802. getting stranded

  1803. out in the middle

  1804. of the night

  1805. in the cold,

  1806. dark winter

  1807. on the road.

  1808. We need not fear

  1809. that what happened

  1810. in the news

  1811. to someone yesterday

  1812. is going to be

  1813. happening to us today.

  1814. We need not fear

  1815. injury,

  1816. health troubles.

  1817. We need not fear

  1818. hostility

  1819. from opponents

  1820. who disagree with us,

  1821. who think badly

  1822. of us

  1823. because of our faith.

  1824. We need not fear

  1825. political persecution

  1826. or presidents

  1827. or prime ministers

  1828. who are going to

  1829. bring in policies

  1830. that are going to

  1831. make it harder

  1832. for us

  1833. to live out

  1834. our faith in Jesus.

  1835. We need not fear

  1836. that great serpent,

  1837. the devil,

  1838. or his minions.

  1839. If you say

  1840. the Lord Jesus

  1841. is my refuge

  1842. and you make

  1843. the most high

  1844. your dwelling,

  1845. no harm

  1846. will overtake you.

  1847. No disaster

  1848. will come near you.

  1849. God commands

  1850. his angels

  1851. concerning you.

  1852. He is your shield.

1853. He will be with you

  1854. in trouble.

  1855. He will answer you

  1856. when you call

1857. and he will show you

  1858. his great salvation.

1859. So what's your trouble today?

  1860. What's the trouble

1861. that you're in this week?

1862. Is it a difficult week

1863. of work ahead of you?

1864. Is it that you're feeling

  1865. spent,

  1866. weary,

  1867. exhausted,

  1868. troubles with health,

1869. not sure what to do

  1870. in a particular situation?

  1871. Is it a relationship

  1872. that's precious,

  1873. that's broken?

1874. Call on the Lord Jesus.

  1875. He will answer.

  1876. Say of him,

  1877. he is my refuge

  1878. and my fortress,

  1879. my God

  1880. in whom I trust.

  1881. Rest in the shadow

  1882. of the Almighty.

  1883. Take refuge

  1884. under his wings.

  1885. He will never

  1886. let you down.

  1887. let's pray.

  1888. Father in heaven,

  1889. we thank you

  1890. for these

  1891. words

  1892. which give us

  1893. such courage

  1894. and confidence.

  1895. And we thank you

  1896. for Jesus,

  1897. the one

  1898. who guarantees

  1899. that all of them

  1900. are true

  1901. and are for us.

  1902. I pray that you

  1903. would dispel

  1904. all of the fear

  1905. in our lives.

  1906. All of it.

  1907. Except the fear

  1908. of you.

1909. That we would be able

  1910. to go forth

  1911. in courage

  1912. and live

  1913. and work

  1914. and talk

  1915. and do things

  1916. with no anxiety,

  1917. no fear

  1918. of disaster

  1919. because you

  1920. are our God.

  1921. Put that deep

  1922. in our hearts.

  1923. let us

  1924. be a testimony

  1925. to the world

  1926. around us.

  1927. We ask

  1928. in Jesus' name.

  1929. Amen.

  1930. Amen.

  1931. Amen.
