  1. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to Psalm chapter 63.

    Psalms 63 chapter mention

  2. Psalm chapter 63.

    Psalms 63 chapter mention

  3. And if you don't have one with you, you can get one right in the seat in front of you.

  4. They're the black covered book.

  5. This psalm has long been precious to me.

  6. In fact, it's one of the first sermons I ever preached was on this psalm over 10 years ago

  7. in my home church where I grew up in my early 20s.

  8. And it's a psalm that speaks of the kind of passionate, intimate, close relationship that we can have with God.

  9. So I'm going to read the psalm for us this morning.

  10. Psalm 63.

  11. A psalm of David.

  12. When he was in the desert of Judah.

  13. You, God, are my God.

  14. Earnestly I seek you.

  15. I thirst for you.

  16. My whole being longs for you.

  17. In a dry and parched land.

  18. Where there is no water.

  19. I have seen you in the sanctuary.

  20. And beheld your power and your glory.

  21. Because your love is better than life.

  22. My lips will glorify you.

  23. I will praise you as long as I live.

  24. And in your name I will lift up my hands.

  25. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods.

  26. With singing lips my mouth will praise you.

  27. On my bed I remember you.

  28. I think of you through the watches of the night.

  29. Because you are my help I sing in the shadow of your wings.

  30. I cling to you.

  31. Your right hand upholds me.

  32. Those who want to kill me will be destroyed.

  33. They will go down to the depths of the earth.

  34. They will be given over to the sword and become food for jackals.

  35. But the king will rejoice in God.

  36. All who swear by God will glory in him.

  37. While the mouths of liars will be silenced.

  38. So this is a psalm of David.

  39. King David.

  40. Man who lived about a thousand years before Jesus came.

  41. And we don't know if this was a song or just a prayer.

  42. But it's very poetic in the way that it's phrased.

  43. And David tells us something of the occasion that he was in.

  44. The situation he was in when this was written.

  45. It says when he was in the desert of Judah.

  46. Now it's difficult to pin down exactly when in David's life this took place.

  47. Because David had a couple times when he was in the desert of Judah.

  48. The first was early on in his life when he was being basically chased and hunted by the king of those days.

  49. Which was King Saul.

  50. And he was running for his life.

  51. And then the second time was much later in his life.

  52. He'd already been king for quite a long time.

  53. And then his son Absalom kind of rose up against him and chased him off the throne.

  54. And so he found himself fleeing again and in the wilderness running for his life.

  55. And there's a few verses in this psalm that kind of fit either one of those quite well.

  56. But at the end of the day we don't know for sure exactly when in his life he wrote this.

  57. Usually with these psalms on Sundays in the summer here I've been kind of dividing up the psalm to help us see the structure of it.

  58. And looking at it and working through it piece by piece.

  59. But I found it difficult to do that with this psalm.

  60. It's only 11 verses and I seem to find six different parts.

  61. So rather than dividing it up that way.

  62. We're going to look instead at three of the themes that are woven throughout the psalm.

  63. And we'll start by looking at first David's circumstances.

  64. So let's start by looking at these first verses here.

  65. We know from the superscription that David is in the desert.

  66. And what's it like there?

  67. In David's first words in verse 1 he mentions thirst.

  68. He says,

  69. So there's the idea of weariness or exhaustion.

  70. Perhaps from hunger or thirst or just the heat.

  71. He says that he's in a dry and parched land.

  72. Where there is no water.

  73. So David's surroundings and situation are quite unpleasant at the moment.

  74. He's thirsty.

  75. He's weary.

  76. He's out in the elements.

  77. And there's nothing to give relief.

  78. Verse 2.

  79. He says,

  80. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

  81. He has seen God's presence and power and glory with his own eyes.

  82. But that's not what's happening right now.

  83. Notice that this is in the past tense.

  84. I have seen you in the sanctuary.

  85. I have beheld your power and your glory.

  86. Back then and there God.

  87. But right now here in the desert it's implied.

  88. I don't see you.

  89. Verse 5.

  90. David says,

  91. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods.

  92. Notice the future tense.

  93. I will be satisfied as with the richest of foods.

  94. But here in the present it's sort of implied that here in the desert the richest foods are not what's on the menu.

  95. And neither is the satisfaction that goes with it.

  96. In verse 7, David is keenly aware of his need for God's help.

  97. In verse 8, he's aware of his need to be sustained and upheld.

  98. And so he's clinging to God.

  99. In verse 9, he tells us that there's people who want to kill him.

  100. They're out to see him dead.

  101. And finally in verse 11, he speaks of the mouths of liars.

  102. There's people spreading lies about him, slander.

  103. So these are David's circumstances described in poetry throughout the psalm.

  104. He's out in the desert.

  105. He's thirsty.

  106. He's hungry.

  107. He's weary.

  108. He's not seeing God visibly as he has in the past.

  109. He can't just go to the tabernacle, the sanctuary, because he's out here in the desert.

  110. He's deeply aware of his need for God's help and sustaining.

  111. And there are these men who are spreading lies about him and seeking to kill him.

  112. But what's always amazed me and touched me when I read this psalm again

  113. is how David desires so much more than just the alleviation of his suffering.

  114. I kept thinking, you know, if I found myself in a situation like this

  115. and I was to write a psalm, it would probably go something like this.

  116. You, God, are my God.

  117. Earnestly, I want to get out of this mess right now.

  118. I'm thirsty for water to drink.

  119. My body faints with exhaustion from the heat.

  120. There's no water here.

  121. Verse 5, I want to get back to eating the richest of foods.

  122. Please get me out of this desert right now and deal with my enemies swiftly.

  123. Amen.

  124. That's more like how we sometimes pray, isn't it?

  125. God, please get me out of this situation ASAP.

  126. And so I'm always surprised again and again when I read what David desires most here.

  127. You, God, are my God.

  128. Earnestly, I seek you.

  129. I thirst for you.

  130. My whole being longs for you.

  131. In a dry and parched land where there is no water.

  132. There's one thing David wants much more than water, food, an easy, comfortable life.

  133. More than all that, David desires God himself.

  134. It's like he's saying, that thirst that I feel in my mouth, that's just a picture.

  135. That's just a parable of how I need you, God.

  136. Like water would satisfy my thirsty tongue and refresh me and replenish me.

  137. That's what you, God, are to my soul.

  138. You are the one that refreshes and replenishes my soul.

  139. That deals with that deep thirst and dryness that's in here.

  140. So even though we see that David's situation is somewhat desperate and grim,

  141. that's not what David's worried about.

  142. It's like he's looking at all this desperation of his circumstances mainly as a metaphor.

  143. It's a picture.

  144. It's a parable of how he truly feels in his heart towards God.

  145. He's desperate for God.

  146. And if you look down the page in your Bibles, you'll see these first eight verses are all about God.

  147. They're all about David's relationship with God.

  148. I just find this so wonderful, so amazing.

  149. I mean, we just heard about how bleak David's circumstances are.

  150. And yet, glance through this whole psalm.

  151. Does David ask God for anything?

  152. Is there any specific request that David has for something from God here?

  153. There's nothing.

  154. He doesn't ask God for a single thing in this prayer.

  155. It's quite a contrast, maybe, to our usual prayers,

  156. where most of our prayers are requests.

  157. It's things we want from God.

  158. So if he's not asking for things, what is David saying?

  159. What is he doing in this prayer?

  160. Well, in verse 1, we see already that he's expressing his longing for God.

  161. Then in verse 2, he reminisces about God, about a special moment that he had with God.

  162. He says, I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.

  163. So he's thinking back to a previous encounter with God,

  164. probably reflecting on a time when he was in the sanctuary at the tabernacle,

  165. perhaps worshiping or praying.

  166. And it seems that, from what David says,

  167. that God had revealed himself very visibly to David in that moment.

  168. And David says, I remember seeing your power and your glory.

  169. This is precious to David.

  170. Back then, the tabernacle, the sanctuary,

  171. that was a big part of relationship with God.

  172. I mean, you came to the tabernacle, the house of the Lord.

  173. You worshipped.

  174. You brought your sacrifice.

  175. You did your praying and your singing there.

  176. But now David is cut off from that.

  177. He can't just go there like he's used to.

  178. He's fleeing for his life in the desert.

  179. So David does this sort of relational reminiscing out loud in his prayer.

  180. I remember back to that time when I saw you in the sanctuary.

  181. I beheld your power and your glory.

  182. And he continues on with this.

  183. He says in verse 3,

  184. Because your love is better than life,

  185. my lips will glorify you.

  186. So he's thinking back on his relationship with God,

  187. how things have gone in his life.

  188. And he makes this most wonderful of statements.

  189. Because your love is better than life.

  190. And that's just the first part.

  191. He's going to say a bunch more here.

  192. But let's just stop and think for a moment

  193. about that statement right there.

  194. Because your love is better than life.

  195. Your love, God, is better than life itself.

  196. What a statement.

  197. And I don't think David's despairing of his life right now.

  198. I don't think he's saying,

  199. Well, my life stinks,

  200. and so it's easy for your love to be better than my life right now.

  201. I think David valued his life.

  202. Sure, it had its troubles and challenges,

  203. the same as all of us do.

  204. But there's a richness and a beauty to life.

  205. Life is a treasure.

  206. It's a gift from God.

  207. And we all know that.

  208. Even if at times we lose sight of it or forget it,

  209. life is a treasure.

  210. But David says there's something even greater,

  211. even better.

  212. Your love, God,

  213. is better

  214. than life.

  215. That phrase alone is worth meditating on.

  216. Do you value your life?

  217. How much do you value your life?

  218. If I think to our world,

  219. our world holds life at the very top

  220. as the most valuable thing that we have.

  221. And yet David says,

  222. My relationship with you, God,

  223. is better.

  224. It's more precious to me.

  225. More valuable to me.

  226. It's the greater treasure.

  227. Knowing your love for me.

  228. Experiencing your loving kindness.

  229. It's been the ultimate,

  230. the best thing of all.

  231. I wonder if you can honestly say amen

  232. to that

  233. in your relationship with God.

  234. Have you known a love from God

  235. that's more precious to you

  236. than life itself?

  237. You can.

  238. And amazingly,

  239. this reality,

  240. David's deep enjoyment of God's love

  241. becomes the foundation of five will statements

  242. which follow.

  243. We're going to just look at three of them.

  244. He says,

  245. Because your love is better than life,

  246. and then these five will statements.

  247. So let's look at a few of them here.

  248. Because your love is better than life,

  249. my lips will glorify you.

  250. So,

  251. I'm going to worship you with my mouth,

  252. says David.

  253. I'm going to declare just how glorious you are.

  254. There's a bit of a principle here.

  255. Knowing God's amazing love

  256. here

  257. in your heart,

  258. that's what leads

  259. to worship.

  260. That's what leads

  261. to that authentic,

  262. joyful worship.

  263. The second one,

  264. because your love is better than life,

  265. I will praise you

  266. as long as I live.

  267. So God's love is so deep,

  268. so awesome,

  269. so wonderful,

  270. that David says,

  271. I'm going to worship you

  272. till the day I die.

  273. As long as I live.

  274. Have you ever had someone tell you

  275. about a new product

  276. or a new movie?

  277. And they really,

  278. really liked it.

  279. They really thought it was great.

  280. And so they're trying to sell it to you.

  281. They're trying to help you appreciate it.

  282. And you get your expectations

  283. really high

  284. and then you go out

  285. and you get that product

  286. or you go see that movie

  287. and you're disappointed.

  288. They got your expectations

  289. a little too high.

  290. They oversold it.

  291. They praised it a little too highly.

  292. They talked a little too much

  293. good about it.

  294. That might happen

  295. with products and movies

  296. but with God,

  297. David realizes,

  298. he sees,

  299. he knows in his heart of hearts

  300. that he could declare

  301. God's praises

  302. for the rest of his life

  303. and never oversell him.

  304. Never praise him too highly.

  305. Never say enough good about him.

  306. He's that worthy.

  307. He's that good.

  308. He's that glorious.

  309. A lifetime of praise

  310. wouldn't do him justice.

  311. And so knowing God's amazing love

  312. in here

  313. doesn't just lead to worship.

  314. It leads to a whole life

  315. of worship.

  316. A life spent

  317. worshiping God.

  318. One more of these will statements.

  319. Because your love

  320. is better than life,

  321. I will be fully satisfied

  322. as with the richest of foods.

  323. Says David.

  324. Now there's some translation variants there.

  325. More literally,

  326. more accurately,

  327. my soul will be fully satisfied

  328. as with the richest of foods.

  329. This is one of my favorite parts

  330. of this psalm.

  331. Let me ask you something.

  332. What's the best food

  333. that you've ever tasted

  334. in your entire life?

  335. Think back to that moment.

  336. Maybe there's one or two

  337. or three things that just,

  338. man, wow,

  339. wow,

  340. that was so good.

  341. And the whole time

  342. that you were eating it,

  343. it's just like

  344. every single bite

  345. was surprise.

  346. Again,

  347. how can it be

  348. that good?

  349. What kind of sauce

  350. is this?

  351. What kind of seasoning?

  352. How did they get

  353. these flavors

  354. all just right

  355. and it's cooked

  356. to perfection?

  357. It's,

  358. and just when you think

  359. you've wrapped

  360. your mind around it,

  361. you take another bite

  362. and your taste buds

  363. go wild

  364. all over again.

  365. Wow!

  366. Have you ever had

  367. a dish or a food

  368. like that?

  369. There's a conversation

  370. starter for you

  371. after the service.

  372. You can,

  373. you can ask each other

  374. about it

  375. after the service.

  376. King David,

  377. no doubt,

  378. had some

  379. wonderfully rich foods.

  380. He ate at the king's table

  381. before he became king

  382. and then once he was king,

  383. I mean,

  384. he was king.

  385. He would have eaten

  386. all kinds of

  387. rich,

  388. tasty foods.

  389. And so he knew

  390. just how deeply satisfying

  391. a meal can be.

  392. And yet his point here

  393. is not about food at all.

  394. It says,

  395. because your love

  396. is better than life,

  397. my soul

  398. will be fully satisfied

  399. as

  400. my tongue

  401. is with the richest

  402. of foods.

  403. It's a simile.

  404. It's poetic.

  405. What is he saying?

  406. He's saying,

  407. just as my mouth

  408. has been so deeply

  409. satisfied with the

  410. richest of foods

  411. in the past,

  412. in the same way,

  413. my soul

  414. will be satisfied

  415. with you,

  416. my God.

  417. Because

  418. your love

  419. is better

  420. than life.

  421. Can your imagination

  422. do this?

  423. Go back to that

  424. tastiest meal

  425. you ever had.

  426. If you can,

  427. taste it again.

  428. Remember what it did

  429. to your tongue

  430. in your mouth.

  431. God's love

  432. can do that

  433. to your soul.

  434. Where every new

  435. taste of his love

  436. surprises you

  437. all over again.

  438. Every new glimpse

  439. of it,

  440. it leaves you

  441. saying,

  442. wow,

  443. that's amazing.

  444. How can it,

  445. how can he love me

  446. that much?

  447. And you get

  448. another taste

  449. of his love

  450. and your heart

  451. goes wild

  452. all over again.

  453. Have you known

  454. God's love

  455. like this?

  456. You can.

  457. So knowing

  458. God's love

  459. here

  460. in your heart

  461. leads to worship.

  462. It leads to

  463. lifelong worship

  464. and it leads

  465. to the deepest

  466. satisfaction

  467. of our souls.

  468. Let's move on

  469. to verse 6.

  470. David says,

  471. on my bed

  472. I remember you.

  473. I think of you

  474. through the watches

  475. of the night.

  476. That's a pretty

  477. intimate thing

  478. to say,

  479. isn't it?

  480. Not only does

  481. David do this

  482. relational reminiscing

  483. up in verse 2

  484. but he says,

  485. I do this

  486. all the time.

  487. I'm thinking

  488. about you

  489. all the time

  490. God

  491. on my bed

  492. all through

  493. the night.

  494. And we don't

  495. know the details

  496. here.

  497. Is David having

  498. some trouble

  499. sleeping?

  500. Is that why

  501. he's up

  502. in all the

  503. watches of the

  504. night?

  505. Well,

  506. if he's in

  507. the desert

  508. probably he

  509. doesn't have

  510. the best night's

  511. rest I'm

  512. going to

  513. guess.

  514. His bed

  515. might not

  516. be much

  517. better than

  518. the hard

  519. ground.

  520. Maybe some

  521. of these

  522. troublemakers

  523. who are

  524. seeking to

  525. kill him

  526. and spreading

  527. lies about

  528. him have

  529. something to

  530. do with

  531. the fact

  532. that he's

  533. up through

  534. the watches

  535. of the

  536. night.

  537. We don't

  538. know for

  539. sure,

  540. but in

  541. these quiet

  542. moments on

  543. his bed,

  544. David says,

  545. I think

  546. about you,

  547. God.

  548. I think

  549. of you all

  550. through the

  551. night.

  552. I think

  553. of you all

  554. things.

  555. Now, if

  556. you were to

  557. say that

  558. to your

  559. sweetheart,

  560. it would

  561. light a

  562. fire in

  563. her heart.

  564. If we

  565. think about

  566. something a

  567. lot, or

  568. someone a

  569. lot, and

  570. often, and

  571. all through

  572. the sleepless

  573. night, it's

  574. usually something

  575. or someone that

  576. matters so

  577. deeply to

  578. us.

  579. either it's

  580. something that

  581. weighs heavy on

  582. our hearts, a

  583. trouble, a

  584. deep trouble, or

  585. on the

  586. positive side of

  587. things, someone

  588. that's very

  589. dear, very

  590. special to

  591. us.

  592. That's how it

  593. was when I

  594. first met my

  595. wife, Jennifer.

  596. I remember I

  597. couldn't sleep.

  598. I was so

  599. excited.

  600. And finally, I

  601. found somebody

  602. who put good

  603. words to it

  604. that explained

  605. what I was

  606. feeling.

  607. It was Dr.

  608. Seuss who

  609. said it.

  610. He said,

  611. you know you're

  612. in love when

  613. you can't fall

  614. asleep because

  615. reality is

  616. finally better

  617. than your

  618. dreams.

  619. That's how it

  620. was for me.

  621. Now, David's not

  622. talking about a

  623. romantic relationship

  624. here with God,

  625. but it's obvious,

  626. isn't it, that

  627. God is supremely

  628. precious to him.

  629. as only he can

  630. be.

  631. On my bed, I

  632. remember you.

  633. I think of you

  634. through the

  635. watches of the

  636. night.

  637. Do you hear the

  638. passion he has

  639. for God?

  640. The love, the

  641. longing.

  642. I mean, it's

  643. so intense.

  644. We get a

  645. picture here of

  646. a David who

  647. just utterly

  648. cherishes and

  649. adores God.

  650. And this

  651. relationship that

  652. David has with

  653. God, it changes

  654. everything.

  655. for him in the

  656. midst of his

  657. troubles.

  658. How easily he

  659. could be lamenting

  660. in this moment.

  661. How easily he

  662. could be complaining

  663. about his

  664. circumstances.

  665. Asking God for

  666. relief.

  667. And yet,

  668. verse 7,

  669. because you are

  670. my help, I

  671. sing in the

  672. shadow of your

  673. wings.

  674. God for

  675. God for

  676. Jesus.

  677. This is like

  678. David's

  679. Paul and

  680. Silas in the

  681. jail moment.

  682. He's out in

  683. the dry desert,

  684. utterly parched

  685. for thirst,

  686. exhausted and

  687. weary, being

  688. hunted and

  689. slandered.

  690. And yet he's

  691. singing songs to

  692. the God who

  693. has loved him and

  694. helped him and

  695. upheld him.

  696. Isn't that

  697. something?

  698. Do you have a

  699. relationship with

  700. God like this?

  701. this is what

  702. first drew me to

  703. this psalm all

  704. those years ago.

  705. Not that I had a

  706. relationship with

  707. God like this, but

  708. I wanted one.

  709. And I saw that

  710. here in God's

  711. word, it's

  712. possible.

  713. David had it.

  714. You can have

  715. it.

  716. I can have it.

  717. It's real.

  718. So that's the

  719. second theme.

  720. We see David's

  721. desire for God

  722. in the desert

  723. which flows out

  724. of his delight in

  725. God and all of

  726. the sweetness that

  727. has come in that

  728. relationship that he

  729. has with God.

  730. Let's look at one

  731. more theme here

  732. quickly.

  733. Then we'll connect

  734. this all to Christ

  735. and then we'll

  736. apply this to

  737. ourselves.

  738. There's something

  739. about these will

  740. statements all

  741. throughout the

  742. psalm that speaks

  743. to us.

  744. Because your love

  745. is better than

  746. life, my lips

  747. will glorify

  748. you.

  749. I will praise

  750. you as long

  751. as I live.

  752. In your name

  753. I will lift up

  754. my hands.

  755. I will be

  756. fully satisfied

  757. as with the

  758. richest of

  759. foods.

  760. With singing

  761. lips my mouth

  762. will praise

  763. you.

  764. And then we

  765. pick it up

  766. again in verse

  767. nine.

  768. Those who want

  769. to kill me

  770. will be destroyed.

  771. They will go

  772. down to the

  773. depths of the

  774. earth.

  775. They will be

  776. given over to

  777. the sword.

  778. But the king

  779. will rejoice in

  780. God.

  781. All who swear

  782. by God will

  783. glory in him

  784. while the mouths

  785. of liars will

  786. be silenced.

  787. That's a lot

  788. of will

  789. statements.

  790. What are we

  791. to make of

  792. this?

  793. All of these

  794. statements taken

  795. together give us

  796. this sense that

  797. David is so

  798. confident.

  799. It's like he's

  800. just sure of

  801. how things will

  802. be in the

  803. future between

  804. him and God

  805. and between

  806. his enemies

  807. and God.

  808. And yet at

  809. the same

  810. moment right

  811. now here in

  812. the present

  813. David's still

  814. in the desert

  815. nothing's

  816. changed.

  817. His enemies

  818. still want him

  819. dead.

  820. So David is

  821. confident of

  822. how it will

  823. be even

  824. though it's

  825. not like that

  826. right now.

  827. He's confident

  828. of how things

  829. will turn out

  830. even though that

  831. future is

  832. unseen.

  833. It's invisible

  834. to him.

  835. He doesn't

  836. feel that in

  837. his present

  838. circumstances.

  839. This is how

  840. real faith in

  841. God expresses

  842. itself.

  843. As the author

  844. of Hebrews put

  845. it so well

  846. faith is the

  847. confidence in

  848. what we hope

  849. for.

  850. It's the

  851. assurance about

  852. what we do

  853. not see.

  854. And there's a

  855. powerful lesson

  856. for us here.

  857. Not an easy

  858. lesson but a

  859. powerful one.

  860. David is

  861. showing us

  862. here that

  863. life may not

  864. always go as

  865. we wish it

  866. would.

  867. At times

  868. things can be

  869. really hard

  870. but even in

  871. the midst of

  872. that we can

  873. rejoice.

  874. We can sing.

  875. We can be

  876. satisfied in

  877. God.

  878. God.

  879. We must look up

  880. to the Lord.

  881. We must look

  882. ahead to what

  883. he has

  884. promised.

  885. We must look

  886. to see how

  887. do all of the

  888. things the good

  889. promises that God

  890. has given how

  891. do they touch my

  892. present situation.

  893. God.

  894. It really is

  895. possible to

  896. rise above

  897. even in the

  898. midst of

  899. difficulty and

  900. troubles and

  901. trials.

  902. But it happens

  903. only through

  904. faith.

  905. Only through

  906. belief.

  907. Only through

  908. trust in

  909. God.

  910. It happens

  911. only through

  912. desiring God

  913. and seeking

  914. him and

  915. coming closer

  916. to him to

  917. enjoy his

  918. love.

  919. Believing

  920. his promises.

  921. All of

  922. this David

  923. wrote about

  924. a thousand

  925. years before

  926. Jesus came on

  927. the scene.

  928. So we want

  929. to consider

  930. briefly for a

  931. moment how

  932. does this

  933. passage point

  934. us to

  935. Jesus.

  936. I see at

  937. least two

  938. ways.

  939. The first

  940. David says

  941. that God's

  942. love is better

  943. than life.

  944. And we

  945. might wonder

  946. if we're

  947. honest some

  948. of us in

  949. our hearts

  950. how can I

  951. come to

  952. know God's

  953. love like

  954. that?

  955. How do I

  956. get that?

  957. I want to

  958. tell you this

  959. morning that

  960. the best place

  961. to start,

  962. the best place

  963. to continue

  964. to know

  965. God's love

  966. is by looking

  967. to Jesus.

  968. Consider what

  969. the author of

  970. Hebrews said.

  971. Hebrews chapter

  972. one verse

  973. three.

  974. He said the

  975. sun,

  976. referring to

  977. Jesus,

  978. the sun is

  979. the radiance

  980. of God's

  981. glory and

  982. the exact

  983. representation

  984. of his

  985. being.

  986. So Jesus

  987. is the

  988. radiance.

  989. He's the

  990. shining forth

  991. of God's

  992. glory,

  993. of all that

  994. is good,

  995. of all that

  996. is great

  997. about him.

  998. The exact

  999. representation

  1000. of who he

  1001. is,

  1002. which means

  1003. that God's

  1004. love is

  1005. most tangibly

  1006. seen in

  1007. Jesus,

  1008. in the

  1009. person of

  1010. Jesus,

  1011. in the

  1012. things that

  1013. he said,

  1014. the things

  1015. that he

  1016. did,

  1017. and who

  1018. he is.

  1019. So if you

  1020. want to grow

  1021. in your

  1022. enjoyment of

  1023. God's love,

  1024. look to

  1025. Jesus,

  1026. come to

  1027. Jesus,

  1028. start with

  1029. him.

  1030. And as

  1031. you do,

  1032. give special

  1033. attention to

  1034. the death

  1035. of Jesus

  1036. on the

  1037. cross.

  1038. Romans

  1039. chapter five

  1040. verse eight

  1041. says this,

  1042. God demonstrates

  1043. his own

  1044. love for

  1045. us in

  1046. this.

  1047. While we

  1048. were still

  1049. sinners,

  1050. Christ died

  1051. for us.

  1052. A

  1053. demonstration

  1054. is something

  1055. that you

  1056. can see.

  1057. Paul is

  1058. saying that

  1059. God made

  1060. his own

  1061. love

  1062. seeable

  1063. to us.

  1064. Seeable

  1065. to us

  1066. through

  1067. the death

  1068. of Christ

  1069. on the

  1070. cross

  1071. for us

  1072. while we

  1073. were still

  1074. sinners.

  1075. So look

  1076. to Jesus,

  1077. yes,

  1078. but also

  1079. look especially

  1080. to his

  1081. death

  1082. on the

  1083. cross

  1084. for you.

  1085. That's

  1086. where you'll

  1087. see the

  1088. love of

  1089. God in

  1090. the fullest

  1091. intensity.

  1092. It's the

  1093. meaning of

  1094. that.

  1095. It's the

  1096. significance

  1097. of that.

  1098. It's the

  1099. gift of

  1100. that,

  1101. the grace

  1102. of that.

  1103. The second

  1104. place we see

  1105. Christ

  1106. pointed to

  1107. from this

  1108. psalm.

  1109. David

  1110. expresses his

  1111. desire as we

  1112. heard for

  1113. God using

  1114. the language

  1115. of thirst

  1116. and hunger.

  1117. He said,

  1118. I thirst

  1119. for you.

  1120. My soul

  1121. will be

  1122. satisfied

  1123. as with the

  1124. richest of

  1125. foods.

  1126. He was

  1127. confident that

  1128. his deepest

  1129. longings would

  1130. be met

  1131. in God

  1132. and in

  1133. God alone.

  1134. And then

  1135. we fast

  1136. forward to

  1137. Jesus and

  1138. what did

  1139. Jesus say?

  1140. Jesus

  1141. declared,

  1142. John

    John 6:35

  1143. chapter 6

  1144. verse 35,

  1145. I am the

  1146. bread of

  1147. life.

  1148. Whoever

  1149. comes to

  1150. me will

  1151. never go

  1152. hungry and

  1153. whoever believes

  1154. in me will

  1155. never be

  1156. thirsty.

  1157. John

    John 7:37

  1158. chapter 7

  1159. verse 37,

  1160. another

  1161. occasion.

  1162. Jesus said

  1163. this, he

  1164. said,

  1165. let anyone

  1166. who is

  1167. thirsty

  1168. come to

  1169. me and

  1170. drink.

  1171. Jesus also

  1172. used the

  1173. language of

  1174. hunger and

  1175. thirst to

  1176. describe the

  1177. desires of

  1178. the human

  1179. soul.

  1180. But look at

  1181. what he

  1182. said.

  1183. He said,

  1184. if you want

  1185. that thirst

  1186. in your soul

  1187. quenched,

  1188. if you want

  1189. that hunger

  1190. satisfied,

  1191. come to

  1192. me.

  1193. Come to

  1194. me.

  1195. me.

  1196. I am the

  1197. bread of

  1198. life.

  1199. I have the

  1200. water of

  1201. life.

  1202. I'm the

  1203. one who can

  1204. meet that

  1205. deepest longing,

  1206. that deepest

  1207. need of

  1208. your soul

  1209. for God.

  1210. So again,

  1211. look to

  1212. Jesus,

  1213. come to

  1214. Jesus,

  1215. call out,

  1216. cry out to

  1217. him,

  1218. just like

  1219. David did

  1220. in Psalm

  1221. 63,

  1222. to Jesus.

  1223. Jesus.

  1224. This psalm

  1225. will always

  1226. be precious

  1227. to me,

  1228. because it

  1229. describes for

  1230. me the kind

  1231. of relationship

  1232. that I've

  1233. been growing

  1234. with God

  1235. over the

  1236. years,

  1237. and it

  1238. speaks of

  1239. the still

  1240. deeper

  1241. relationship

  1242. that I can

  1243. have with

  1244. him.

  1245. It talks

  1246. of intimacy

  1247. and passion

  1248. between us

  1249. and God.

  1250. I want

  1251. to ask

  1252. you this

  1253. morning,

  1254. do you

  1255. have this

  1256. kind of

  1257. relationship

  1258. with God,

  1259. with Jesus?

  1260. Do you

  1261. want it?

  1262. Do you

  1263. want to

  1264. know God's

  1265. love

  1266. deeper,

  1267. better?

  1268. I've

  1269. already

  1270. pointed us

  1271. to Jesus

  1272. to find

  1273. that,

  1274. and to

  1275. grow in

  1276. that,

  1277. but I

  1278. want to

  1279. leave us

  1280. with just

  1281. one final

  1282. word of

  1283. encouragement.

  1284. Relationships

  1285. take work.

  1286. Most of

  1287. us have

  1288. learned that

  1289. by now.

  1290. I'm not

  1291. talking about

  1292. the exhausting

  1293. labor kind

  1294. of work,

  1295. but the

  1296. relational kind

  1297. of work.

  1298. You know

  1299. the things

  1300. I'm talking

  1301. about.

  1302. Think about

  1303. a loved

  1304. one,

  1305. a family

  1306. member.

  1307. To have

  1308. a good,

  1309. strong,

  1310. close

  1311. relationship

  1312. with that

  1313. person,

  1314. it requires

  1315. relational

  1316. work.

  1317. work.

  1318. It requires

  1319. that you

  1320. make the

  1321. spending time

  1322. with them

  1323. a priority.

  1324. It requires

  1325. intentionality,

  1326. that you

  1327. initiate with

  1328. them often.

  1329. It requires

  1330. words spoken

  1331. to them,

  1332. exchanged with

  1333. them,

  1334. feelings

  1335. expressed.

  1336. It requires

  1337. that you

  1338. listen to

  1339. them,

  1340. and really

  1341. listen.

  1342. it requires

  1343. that you

  1344. ask them

  1345. questions,

  1346. to get

  1347. to know

  1348. things about

  1349. them.

  1350. It requires

  1351. that you

  1352. seek to

  1353. understand

  1354. their needs

  1355. and their

  1356. desires,

  1357. and how

  1358. can I

  1359. meet those?

  1360. This is

  1361. the kind

  1362. of relational

  1363. work that

  1364. we must

  1365. do to

  1366. have a

  1367. good,

  1368. strong,

  1369. close

  1370. relationship

  1371. with another

  1372. human being,

  1373. with a

  1374. son,

  1375. or a

  1376. spouse,

  1377. or a

  1378. daughter,

  1379. or a

  1380. mother,

  1381. or a

  1382. father.

  1383. In the

  1384. same way,

  1385. our

  1386. relationship

  1387. with God

  1388. takes some

  1389. relational

  1390. work.

  1391. These same

  1392. kinds of

  1393. things.

  1394. We have

  1395. to prioritize

  1396. time spent

  1397. with him.

  1398. We have

  1399. to be

  1400. intentional

  1401. and initiate

  1402. with him.

  1403. We have

  1404. to listen

  1405. as he

  1406. speaks to

  1407. us and

  1408. respond.

  1409. We have

  1410. to speak

  1411. to him

  1412. through

  1413. prayer.

  1414. We have

  1415. to express

  1416. our hearts

  1417. and feelings

  1418. opening up

  1419. to him

  1420. regularly

  1421. and often.

  1422. These are

  1423. the things

  1424. that we do

  1425. to draw

  1426. near to

  1427. God.

  1428. I just

  1429. want to

  1430. leave us

  1431. with one

  1432. simple word

  1433. of encouragement.

  1434. This is

  1435. God's

  1436. invitation

  1437. to you

  1438. and to

  1439. me.

  1440. James

    James 4:8

  1441. 4,

  1442. verse 8.

  1443. It says,

  1444. draw near

  1445. to God

  1446. and he

  1447. will draw

  1448. near to

  1449. you.

  1450. Do you

  1451. want this

  1452. kind of

  1453. relationship

  1454. that David

  1455. has with

  1456. God in

  1457. Psalm 63?

  1458. Do you

  1459. want that

  1460. with Jesus?

  1461. It's not

  1462. complicated.

  1463. draw near

  1464. to God,

  1465. to Jesus

  1466. and he

  1467. will draw

  1468. near to

  1469. you.

  1470. He will

  1471. let you

  1472. know the

  1473. depths of

  1474. his love

  1475. for you.

  1476. Your soul

  1477. will be

  1478. satisfied

  1479. in him.

  1480. His love

  1481. really is

  1482. better than

  1483. life itself

  1484. so draw

  1485. near to

  1486. him.

  1487. It's that

  1488. simple.

  1489. God's

  1490. love.

  1491. Let's

  1492. pray.

  1493. Father in

  1494. heaven, we

  1495. thank you

  1496. that you

  1497. have loved

  1498. us with

  1499. such an

  1500. amazing

  1501. love.

  1502. So much

  1503. that you

  1504. sent your

  1505. son Jesus

  1506. to die

  1507. for us.

  1508. So much

  1509. Jesus that

  1510. you endured

  1511. such awful

  1512. suffering

  1513. and shame

  1514. so that we

  1515. could have

  1516. the forgiveness

  1517. of our sins

  1518. and be

  1519. restored to

  1520. relationship

  1521. with you.

  1522. We thank

  1523. you so

  1524. much for

  1525. that.

  1526. And I

  1527. pray that

  1528. each one

  1529. of us

  1530. here in

  1531. this room

  1532. would see

  1533. new depths

  1534. of that

  1535. love.

  1536. Today and

  1537. in this

  1538. week ahead,

  1539. fill us

  1540. with this

  1541. confident

  1542. faith,

  1543. this joy,

  1544. this hope

  1545. that was

  1546. David's,

  1547. and this

  1548. closeness

  1549. that he

  1550. had with

  1551. you.

  1552. We ask

  1553. this for

  1554. your name.

  1555. Amen.
