  1. All right, well this morning we come to our last psalm in our summer series through the psalms.

  2. It's hard to believe already that summer's gone and we're heading into September here,

  3. but we are looking at Psalm 49 today.

  4. So if you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to Psalm 49.

  5. And instead of reading it all through at the beginning here,

  6. I'm going to kind of read through it bit by bit as we go.

  7. So Psalm 49, let me just pray and then we'll jump in.

  8. Father in heaven, thank you for your word.

  9. Thank you for the power that is in your word.

  10. And we ask that you would give us ears to hear in these moments.

  11. We ask that you would speak directly to our hearts.

  12. That you would convict us, that you would encourage us,

  13. that you would reveal your truth to us,

  14. and that we would be changed forever because of what we hear.

  15. in your word.

  16. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  17. Amen.

  18. So as you can see from the superscription at the top of the psalm,

  19. it says,

  20. For the director of music of the sons of Korah.

  21. A psalm.

  22. So this was written by the sons of Korah.

  23. Korah was a descendant of Levi.

  24. Levi was one of the 12 sons of Israel.

  25. And way down the line,

  26. some of Korah's descendants were installed by King David

  27. as musical worship leaders at the tabernacle

  28. and later at the temple.

  29. This is all about a thousand years before Christ came.

  30. And one of these guys,

  31. or maybe one or two of them,

  32. wrote this psalm

  33. and gave it to the director of music.

  34. So this was actually sung at the tabernacle

  35. and probably later at the temple.

  36. And if we look at verse 4 there on the screen,

  37. we see that the writer was a harpist.

  38. The actual word is lyre,

  39. so you can imagine that little U-shaped harp

  40. that you can almost hold in your lap.

  41. That was the instrumentation of this song.

  42. So as we work through this,

  43. keep that in mind,

  44. that this is music,

  45. this is song lyrics all the way through.

  46. The opening lyrics of this song

  47. invite us to listen.

  48. Verses 1 to 4.

  49. Hear this, all you peoples.

  50. Listen, all who live in this world,

  51. both low and high,

  52. rich and poor alike.

  53. My mouth will speak words of wisdom.

  54. The meditation of my heart

  55. will give you understanding.

  56. I will turn my ear to a proverb.

  57. With the harp,

  58. I will expound my riddle.

  59. So the first thing that the songwriter does

  60. is he asks for our attention.

  61. He says,

  62. Hear this.

  63. Listen.

  64. Give me your ear for a moment.

  65. Now who is his intended audience?

  66. Who is he talking to?

  67. Who is this song for?

  68. Hear this, all you peoples.

  69. Listen.

  70. All who live in this world,

  71. both low and high,

  72. rich and poor alike.

  73. So right out of the gate,

  74. he lets us know that this song is for everyone.

  75. All peoples.

  76. All who live in this world.

  77. That's as broad as it gets.

  78. Doesn't matter whether you're upper class,

  79. famous,

  80. influential,

  81. popular,

  82. or whether you're lower class.

  83. Doesn't matter whether you're rich,

  84. or you're well-to-do,

  85. you've got the means,

  86. or whether you're poor,

  87. or whether you're struggling,

  88. trying to get by.

  89. This song is for you.

  90. So this is how he starts.

  91. Listen up, everybody.

  92. This song is for you.

  93. No matter who you are,

  94. give me your ear for a moment.

  95. Verse three,

  96. I have some wisdom to speak to you.

  97. There's something I've been meditating on in my heart.

  98. And with this song,

  99. I'd like to give you that same understanding.

  100. I'd like to share that wisdom with you

  101. so that you can be wise.

  102. So we get a bit of a clue

  103. about the kind of song that this is.

  104. Even though it's going to be sung at the tabernacle,

  105. it's not a song of praise.

  106. It's not even addressed to God.

  107. It's not a prayer.

  108. This is a wisdom song.

  109. And the purpose of it is to impart God's wisdom

  110. to the hearer,

  111. to make us wise.

  112. If we look at verse four there,

  113. we see that this is almost like Proverbs set to music.

  114. It's the clever sayings of the wise

  115. explained, revealed with an instrument.

  116. So this is how the song begins.

  117. He begins by asking for our attention

  118. and offering words of wisdom.

  119. And then immediately following this,

  120. he introduces the main theme of the song.

  121. He puts the theme in the form of a rhetorical question

  122. in verses five and six.

  123. Why should I fear when evil days come?

  124. When wicked deceivers surround me,

  125. those who trust in their wealth

  126. and boast of their great riches.

  127. So this song has one big question

  128. and this is it.

  129. And it's the big question

  130. because it's the only question in the whole song.

  131. It's the main question.

  132. Everything that follows is the answer

  133. to this question.

  134. And it's a big question.

  135. I mean, it's a long question.

  136. It's got lots of phrases and parts to it.

  137. But if we boil it down and simplify it,

  138. the question is,

  139. why should I fear when evil days come?

  140. And then these lines which follow

  141. kind of explain more about that.

  142. What is it that makes these days evil?

  143. And he puts words to this.

  144. These are days when wicked deceivers surround me.

  145. In particular,

  146. those who trust in their wealth.

  147. These are wealthy wicked deceivers.

  148. They're people who are boasting

  149. of their great riches.

  150. So there's a lot here.

  151. Notice that word surround.

  152. All around me.

  153. And the temptation

  154. is to fear.

  155. To be afraid.

  156. To be anxious.

  157. To be worried.

  158. Because these are men of great power.

  159. They're wealthy.

  160. And with their wealth,

  161. they're not known

  162. for giving that money to charity.

  163. And doing nice things

  164. to help people in need.

  165. They're known for their deceitfulness.

  166. And their cruelty.

  167. This was written in troubling days.

  168. If you've been reading

  169. through the Old Testament,

  170. I'm not sure if you've got

  171. to that point yet.

  172. Hopefully.

  173. In your Bible reading this year.

  174. The book of Judges.

  175. It was a time of great trouble

  176. in the history of Israel.

  177. There was war.

  178. There was lawlessness.

  179. There was tribalism.

  180. There were enemy kings

  181. and nations

  182. and raiders

  183. and armies.

  184. And finally,

  185. Israel did get their own king.

  186. But then things didn't go

  187. all too well with him.

  188. There was more wars.

  189. There was more battles.

  190. There was corruption.

  191. There was oppression.

  192. Those things were normal.

  193. Finally,

  194. they did put King David

  195. on the throne of Judah.

  196. But even after that,

  197. there was still a lot of turmoil

  198. in those early years

  199. of David's reign.

  200. And so,

  201. this is how things have been

  202. for people

  203. leading up to this song

  204. being written.

  205. Even within the land of Israel,

  206. amongst ethnically related peoples,

  207. there hasn't been stability.

  208. There often hasn't been justice.

  209. The strong and the wealthy

  210. and the powerful

  211. often trampled the weak

  212. and the poor.

  213. And so,

  214. we have to know

  215. that this question

  216. in verse 5

  217. probably struck a chord

  218. in the hearts of the people

  219. in these days.

  220. They knew

  221. what it was like

  222. to live with fear

  223. and anxiety,

  224. with insecurity.

  225. They'd seen some evil days,

  226. either witnessed it

  227. or some of them

  228. even been victims.

  229. The wealthy

  230. and the powerful,

  231. they were those people

  232. who bullied,

  233. who oppressed,

  234. who stole,

  235. and often there was no justice

  236. and nobody

  237. to stand up

  238. to those guys.

  239. So there's a sense

  240. in which this question

  241. may feel a little bit

  242. far away

  243. to us today,

  244. a little bit irrelevant

  245. because,

  246. if we're honest,

  247. we all enjoy

  248. a good measure

  249. of peace and safety

  250. here in these days,

  251. in this place.

  252. We don't feel

  253. imminently threatened

  254. by the wicked

  255. or by wealthy people

  256. all around us.

  257. But, you know,

  258. as I thought about

  259. this some more,

  260. I realized

  261. that maybe this is

  262. a little more relevant

  263. after all.

  264. I mean,

  265. it was just a couple

  266. years back

  267. when I watched

  268. as the temperature,

  269. even here in our own church,

  270. changed

  271. as we endured

  272. the whole COVID thing.

  273. Fear rose

  274. in many of our hearts.

  275. Anxiety,

  276. stress.

  277. We all struggled

  278. as we talked

  279. to different people

  280. and heard different

  281. things in the news

  282. and online

  283. and we struggled

  284. to know

  285. who's telling the truth

  286. and who are those people

  287. who are trying

  288. to deceive us.

  289. Many became

  290. increasingly dissatisfied

  291. with leaders

  292. and politicians

  293. in government

  294. and rightly so

  295. because we hear

  296. about all kinds

  297. of corruption.

  298. We hear about

  299. scandals.

  300. We hear about lies.

  301. We hear about

  302. promises

  303. that are not

  304. being kept

  305. and we know

  306. that many in power

  307. in our own country

  308. are the wealthy.

  309. We know

  310. that they're

  311. manipulating

  312. and maneuvering

  313. oftentimes

  314. behind the scenes.

  315. Now,

  316. COVID is over.

  317. At least,

  318. that's my opinion.

  319. But still today,

  320. we're seeing

  321. the prices of gas

  322. and food

  323. and groceries

  324. increasing.

  325. Then we look over

  326. and we see others

  327. around us

  328. who somehow

  329. are able to afford

  330. a brand new car

  331. or holiday trailer

  332. or house

  333. or whatever,

  334. go on an expensive

  335. vacation.

  336. So are we immune

  337. to this fear

  338. that evil days

  339. have come?

  340. I don't think so.

  341. Are we tempted

  342. to fret

  343. as we watch

  344. some around us

  345. prospering,

  346. getting things easy

  347. while we struggle

  348. to pay the bills?

  349. I think so.

  350. This is the amazing

  351. thing here.

  352. He raises

  353. all of this

  354. with a question

  355. but it's a rhetorical

  356. question.

  357. He's not asking it

  358. because he doesn't

  359. know the answer.

  360. He does know

  361. the answer.

  362. He's actually

  363. making a statement

  364. like,

  365. why should I fear

  366. when evil days come?

  367. When wicked deceivers

  368. surround me,

  369. those who trust

  370. in their wealth

  371. and boast

  372. of their great riches.

  373. It's a statement.

  374. I'm not going

  375. to fear

  376. in evil days.

  377. I'm not going

  378. to worry

  379. about the wicked

  380. or what they

  381. might do to me.

  382. I'm not going

  383. to envy the rich.

  384. Those who take

  385. such confidence

  386. in their wealth

  387. or boast

  388. in their possessions,

  389. their investment

  390. holdings,

  391. their bank accounts.

  392. And why not?

  393. Well, the rest

  394. of the psalm

  395. is the answer.

  396. It's the reasons

  397. and we're going

  398. to look at

  399. two main reasons.

  400. We'll see

  401. two main reasons

  402. come out.

  403. And the first one

  404. we'll just lay it

  405. out right up front

  406. and then we'll see it.

  407. I'm not going

  408. to fear

  409. in evil days

  410. when the wicked,

  411. when the wealthy

  412. surround me,

  413. when they're prospering.

  414. And his answer

  415. is basically this

  416. because they're

  417. all going to die

  418. and lose everything.

  419. They will get

  420. what they deserve

  421. and no amount

  422. of wealth

  423. will keep them

  424. from that.

  425. Let's see this

  426. starting in verse 7.

  427. He says,

  428. he asked the question,

  429. why should I fear

  430. when evil days come?

  431. No one,

  432. verse 7,

  433. can redeem

  434. the life of another

  435. or give a ransom

  436. to God

  437. for them.

  438. The ransom

  439. for a life

  440. is costly.

  441. No payment

  442. is ever enough

  443. so that they should

  444. live on forever

  445. and not see

  446. decay.

  447. So there's a great

  448. leveler,

  449. he says,

  450. that's coming

  451. for all of us

  452. and that's death.

  453. And no amount

  454. of money,

  455. no amount

  456. of possessions,

  457. no amount

  458. of health care

  459. coverage

  460. can change the fact

  461. that someday

  462. you will die.

  463. and in these verses

  464. he makes it quite clear,

  465. it doesn't matter

  466. how much money

  467. you have,

  468. it's not enough.

  469. You can't buy

  470. an unending life

  471. from God.

  472. You can't stave off

  473. death forever.

  474. Death came to humanity

  475. as a punishment

  476. from God

  477. for sin

  478. and you can't

  479. pay your own ransom

  480. or the ransom

  481. of another

  482. to God

  483. so that he's going

  484. to somehow

  485. grant you

  486. to live forever.

  487. Both low and high,

  488. rich and poor

  489. alike,

  490. we all die

  491. and our bodies

  492. see decay.

  493. They come to rot

  494. in the ground.

  495. Verse 10,

  496. for all can see

  497. that the wise

  498. die,

  499. that the foolish

  500. and the senseless

  501. also perish,

  502. leaving their wealth

  503. to others.

  504. Money can do

  505. a lot of good things

  506. but there's one thing

  507. that it cannot do.

  508. It cannot keep us

  509. from the punishment

  510. that we all deserve

  511. for our sins.

  512. Sooner or later,

  513. one way or another,

  514. death will have

  515. all of us

  516. whether you are

  517. a wise person

  518. or a fool.

  519. And on that day,

  520. he says,

  521. all the wealth

  522. you have

  523. will be left

  524. for another.

  525. Verse 11,

  526. their tombs

  527. will remain

  528. their houses

  529. forever.

  530. Their dwellings

  531. for endless generations

  532. though they had

  533. named lands

  534. after themselves.

  535. Now there's a bit

  536. of a translation

  537. variance here

  538. depending on what

  539. translation in English

  540. you have.

  541. It'll read a little

  542. differently but in

  543. either case,

  544. it's about

  545. the permanence

  546. and finality

  547. of death

  548. despite the pride

  549. and the presumption

  550. of the wicked.

  551. Even though they

  552. lived in houses,

  553. strong,

  554. established dwelling

  555. places that they

  556. thought would last

  557. forever.

  558. They even named

  559. land after

  560. themselves,

  561. laying claim to it.

  562. This is my

  563. territory.

  564. Yet it's the tomb

  565. over in the hillside

  566. that will be their

  567. house,

  568. their dwelling

  569. place forever.

  570. as it says

  571. in verse 12,

  572. people

  573. despite

  574. their wealth

  575. do not

  576. endure.

  577. They are like

  578. the beasts

  579. that perish.

  580. Again,

  581. the main point

  582. here,

  583. death

  584. is inevitable.

  585. It's coming.

  586. It's coming

  587. for you.

  588. One way

  589. or another,

  590. sooner

  591. or later,

  592. wise or

  593. foolish,

  594. it doesn't

  595. matter.

  596. It doesn't

  597. matter how

  598. much money

  599. you have,

  600. doesn't matter

  601. how many

  602. possessions

  603. you have

  604. or what

  605. quality they

  606. are,

  607. doesn't matter

  608. how sturdily

  609. you built

  610. your house

  611. or what

  612. kind of

  613. renovations

  614. you did

  615. to it,

  616. none of

  617. these things

  618. will stop

  619. your day

  620. from coming.

  621. Your net

  622. worth,

  623. the minute

  624. after you

  625. die,

  626. will be the

  627. same as

  628. everybody

  629. else's

  630. net worth

  631. the minute

  632. after they

  633. die.

  634. That thing

  635. you bought

  636. or built

  637. might have

  638. been built

  639. to last,

  640. but what

  641. does that

  642. matter if

  643. you aren't

  644. here to

  645. make use

  646. of it?

  647. It's going

  648. to be

  649. someone else's

  650. soon.

  651. People,

  652. despite their

  653. wealth,

  654. do not

  655. endure.

  656. They are

  657. like the

  658. beasts that

  659. perish.

  660. How many

  661. of you have

  662. seen something

  663. like this

  664. in your

  665. travels this

  666. summer so

  667. far?

  668. After about

  669. almost 5,000

  670. kilometers to

  671. Indianapolis

  672. and back,

  673. I saw quite

  674. a lot of

  675. roadkill

  676. on the

  677. side of

  678. the road.

  679. Got

  680. thinking about

  681. that.

  682. The beasts

  683. that perish,

  684. that roadkill

  685. on the side

  686. of the road,

  687. that's what

  688. things will be

  689. like for

  690. you and

  691. for me.

  692. Soon

  693. enough.

  694. Now,

  695. of course,

  696. with roadkill,

  697. the end of

  698. that animal's

  699. life was

  700. sudden and

  701. violent,

  702. but regardless,

  703. death was

  704. coming for

  705. that critter

  706. at some

  707. point.

  708. We all

  709. know that.

  710. Animals

  711. don't live

  712. forever,

  713. and the

  714. truth is

  715. that he's

  716. saying here,

  717. neither do

  718. we.

  719. We are

  720. like them

  721. in that

  722. regard.

  723. We,

  724. too,

  725. will

  726. perish.

  727. Our time

  728. will come.

  729. Verse

  730. 13,

  731. this is the

  732. fate of

  733. those who

  734. trust in

  735. themselves,

  736. and of

  737. their followers

  738. who approve

  739. their sayings.

  740. They are

  741. like sheep

  742. and are

  743. destined to

  744. die.

  745. Death

  746. will be

  747. their

  748. shepherd.

  749. Their

  750. forms will

  751. decay in

  752. the grave,

  753. far from

  754. their

  755. princely

  756. mansions.

  757. That

  758. contrasts

  759. in verse

  760. 14 is

  761. pretty

  762. powerful.

  763. Their

  764. forms will

  765. decay in

  766. the grave,

  767. far from

  768. their

  769. princely

  770. mansions.

  771. Think about

  772. your house,

  773. all that

  774. you've put

  775. into it,

  776. but that's

  777. not where

  778. you will

  779. end up.

  780. You'll

  781. end up

  782. about a

  783. mile west

  784. of town

  785. in the

  786. Davidson

  787. Cemetery,

  788. unless,

  789. of course,

  790. you have

  791. another

  792. cemetery

  793. picked out.

  794. and there

  795. he says,

  796. your body

  797. will

  798. decay.

  799. Far

  800. from

  801. your

  802. house.

  803. Again,

  804. the point

  805. that he's

  806. making,

  807. I'm not

  808. going to

  809. fear in

  810. evil days

  811. when the

  812. wicked,

  813. when the

  814. wealthy

  815. surround me,

  816. when they

  817. prosper,

  818. because they're

  819. all going

  820. to die.

  821. We're all

  822. going to

  823. die and

  824. lose

  825. everything,

  826. and they

  827. will get

  828. what they

  829. deserve,

  830. and no

  831. amount of

  832. wealth

  833. will keep

  834. them from

  835. it.

  836. And there's

  837. a lesson

  838. here,

  839. verse 16.

  840. He says,

  841. do not

  842. be overawed

  843. when others

  844. grow rich,

  845. when the

  846. splendor of

  847. their houses

  848. increase.

  849. That word

  850. overawed is

  851. maybe a little

  852. bit misleading.

  853. It almost

  854. sounds like,

  855. whoa,

  856. but really

  857. it means to

  858. be greatly

  859. afraid,

  860. or overly

  861. concerned,

  862. or worried,

  863. and it

  864. just ties

  865. right back

  866. in with

  867. the big

  868. question.

  869. Why should

  870. I fear?

  871. He says,

  872. don't worry

  873. about them.

  874. Don't fear.

  875. Don't get

  876. bent out of

  877. shape when

  878. the wicked

  879. around grow

  880. rich,

  881. when the

  882. world prospers.

  883. Why not?

  884. Because,

  885. verse 17,

  886. for they

  887. will take

  888. nothing with

  889. them when

  890. they die.

  891. Their

  892. splendor

  893. will not

  894. descend

  895. with

  896. them.

  897. Though

  898. while they

  899. live,

  900. they count

  901. themselves

  902. blessed,

  903. and people

  904. praise you

  905. when you

  906. prosper,

  907. they will

  908. join those

  909. who have

  910. gone before

  911. them,

  912. who will

  913. never again

  914. see the

  915. light of

  916. life.

  917. Again,

  918. don't worry.

  919. Don't be

  920. overly concerned

  921. in evil

  922. days as the

  923. wicked seem

  924. to get

  925. their way,

  926. as they

  927. prosper,

  928. because they're

  929. all going

  930. to die

  931. and lose

  932. everything.

  933. They'll get

  934. what they

  935. deserve,

  936. which here

  937. is described

  938. as never

  939. again see

  940. the light

  941. of life.

  942. Think about

  943. that.

  944. That's eternal

  945. darkness,

  946. eternal

  947. death.

  948. They will

  949. never again

  950. see the

  951. light of

  952. life.

  953. life.

  954. Maybe you've

  955. heard it

  956. said,

  957. there's no

  958. U-Haul

  959. behind the

  960. hearse.

  961. I think

  962. Billy Graham

  963. was known

  964. for saying

  965. that.

  966. Apparently

  967. Denzel

  968. Washington

  969. was too.

  970. And how

  971. this picture

  972. came to be,

  973. I have no

  974. idea.

  975. Maybe somebody

  976. thought they'd

  977. just do it

  978. for a joke.

  979. But I like

  980. that saying,

  981. there's no

  982. U-Haul

  983. behind the

  984. hearse.

  985. You can't

  986. take your

  987. possessions

  988. with you

  989. when you

  990. die.

  991. You can't

  992. take your

  993. money with

  994. you.

  995. Death

  996. separates

  997. you

  998. permanently

  999. from all

  1000. your stuff.

  1001. You leave

  1002. it all

  1003. behind.

  1004. And so

  1005. again,

  1006. he charges

  1007. us,

  1008. don't worry,

  1009. don't get

  1010. bent out of

  1011. shape.

  1012. When you

  1013. see other

  1014. people getting

  1015. ahead,

  1016. prospering,

  1017. getting rich,

  1018. getting into

  1019. those positions

  1020. of power and

  1021. influence all

  1022. around you,

  1023. they won't

  1024. have those

  1025. things for

  1026. long.

  1027. They're going

  1028. to lose it

  1029. all.

  1030. And he

  1031. ends in

  1032. verse 20

  1033. with a

  1034. similar

  1035. statement to

  1036. that in

  1037. verse 12.

  1038. People who

  1039. have wealth

  1040. but lack

  1041. understanding

  1042. are like

  1043. the beasts

  1044. that perish.

  1045. It's hard

  1046. to imagine

  1047. that as kind

  1048. of the

  1049. clincher

  1050. phrase of

  1051. the song.

  1052. Like the

  1053. beasts that

  1054. perish,

  1055. you know.

  1056. Just not a

  1057. pleasant feeling.

  1058. But this is

  1059. a wisdom

  1060. psalm.

  1061. And his

  1062. first answer

  1063. to this

  1064. big question,

  1065. don't worry.

  1066. Don't worry

  1067. when evil

  1068. days come.

  1069. The people

  1070. that make

  1071. those days

  1072. evil,

  1073. they're going

  1074. to lose

  1075. it all

  1076. when they

  1077. die.

  1078. And they

  1079. will get

  1080. what they

  1081. deserve.

  1082. And their

  1083. money can't

  1084. save them

  1085. from that.

  1086. Their

  1087. positions,

  1088. their power

  1089. can't save

  1090. them from

  1091. that.

  1092. What's the

  1093. big issue

  1094. here with

  1095. these people?

  1096. people.

  1097. It is a

  1098. problem that

  1099. they are

  1100. wicked.

  1101. It is a

  1102. problem that

  1103. they're deceitful.

  1104. It is a

  1105. problem in

  1106. verse 11 that

  1107. they're proud.

  1108. But probably

  1109. all of those

  1110. things are more

  1111. symptoms of a

  1112. deeper problem.

  1113. I think verse

  1114. 6 highlights

  1115. what their

  1116. problem is.

  1117. They are

  1118. those who

  1119. trust in

  1120. their wealth.

  1121. They are

  1122. those who

  1123. boast of

  1124. their great

  1125. riches.

  1126. Money is

  1127. the thing

  1128. that they

  1129. put their

  1130. hope in.

  1131. Their

  1132. stuff.

  1133. Their

  1134. bank

  1135. accounts,

  1136. their cars,

  1137. their houses,

  1138. their properties.

  1139. Verse

  1140. 16.

  1141. Beautifying

  1142. their houses,

  1143. making the

  1144. splendor of

  1145. their house

  1146. increase.

  1147. We're

  1148. talking

  1149. expensive

  1150. renovations,

  1151. luxurious

  1152. things,

  1153. fine

  1154. furniture.

  1155. lavish

  1156. comforts.

  1157. These are

  1158. the things

  1159. that matter

  1160. most to

  1161. these people.

  1162. And it's

  1163. not just

  1164. that they

  1165. trust in

  1166. it,

  1167. but they

  1168. boast in

  1169. it.

  1170. They love

  1171. it.

  1172. They celebrate

  1173. it.

  1174. And when

  1175. the days

  1176. become evil,

  1177. they look

  1178. at what

  1179. they have

  1180. as their

  1181. security,

  1182. their

  1183. protection.

  1184. In

  1185. verse 13,

  1186. they are

  1187. further

  1188. described as

  1189. those who

  1190. trust in

  1191. themselves.

  1192. They

  1193. foolishly put

  1194. confidence in

  1195. what they have

  1196. achieved for

  1197. themselves.

  1198. But according

  1199. to the

  1200. songwriter,

  1201. their confidence

  1202. is terribly

  1203. misplaced.

  1204. It's utterly

  1205. short-sighted.

  1206. Their confidence

  1207. is based on a

  1208. lie.

  1209. This lie

  1210. that they will

  1211. live on forever.

  1212. That they will

  1213. never face a

  1214. trouble that

  1215. their money

  1216. can't fix.

  1217. And so they

  1218. are fools.

  1219. they are

  1220. those who

  1221. lack

  1222. understanding.

  1223. In verse

  1224. 20.

  1225. So I found

  1226. a question in

  1227. here that I

  1228. thought I'd

  1229. just ask this

  1230. morning.

  1231. As you think

  1232. about some of

  1233. these things that

  1234. we're hearing in

  1235. this psalm,

  1236. what would you

  1237. say is the

  1238. greater danger

  1239. for you

  1240. personally?

  1241. Is it being

  1242. overly concerned

  1243. about others

  1244. prospering all

  1245. around us?

  1246. Or is it

  1247. falling for the

  1248. same lie that

  1249. they do?

  1250. What's the

  1251. greater temptation

  1252. for you?

  1253. The greater

  1254. problem?

  1255. Is it being

  1256. overly concerned,

  1257. fearful,

  1258. worried about

  1259. those around us

  1260. who are prospering,

  1261. who are getting

  1262. ahead, who are

  1263. jockeying, who

  1264. are doing things

  1265. that are not

  1266. good?

  1267. Or is the

  1268. greater temptation

  1269. for you falling

  1270. for that same

  1271. lie that they

  1272. do?

  1273. I can get

  1274. that.

  1275. I'll be happy.

  1276. Then I'll

  1277. really have

  1278. life.

  1279. We've already

  1280. looked at the

  1281. answer, number

  1282. one, to this

  1283. big question.

  1284. But there's a

  1285. secondary answer

  1286. nestled within

  1287. this.

  1288. If this is

  1289. how it goes

  1290. at the end

  1291. of our lives,

  1292. then we

  1293. should also

  1294. know that we

  1295. shouldn't be

  1296. among those

  1297. who desire

  1298. wealth like

  1299. they do.

  1300. We shouldn't

  1301. be among those

  1302. who trust in

  1303. it, who look

  1304. to money and

  1305. stuff and

  1306. houses for

  1307. fulfillment.

  1308. their forms

  1309. will decay in

  1310. the grave, far

  1311. from their

  1312. princely

  1313. mansions.

  1314. But, verse

  1315. 15, some

  1316. of you have

  1317. been waiting,

  1318. where's the

  1319. good news in

  1320. this?

  1321. But, here

  1322. it is, verse

  1323. 15, God will

  1324. redeem me from

  1325. the realm of

  1326. the dead.

  1327. God, he

  1328. will surely

  1329. take me to

  1330. himself.

  1331. So, there is

  1332. hope.

  1333. There is an

  1334. alternative to

  1335. putting your

  1336. trust in wealth,

  1337. in your stuff,

  1338. in your

  1339. possessions.

  1340. You can put

  1341. your hope in

  1342. God.

  1343. You can put

  1344. your trust in

  1345. him.

  1346. And, here in

  1347. verse 15, the

  1348. singer tells us

  1349. that his

  1350. confidence is

  1351. that his fate is

  1352. going to be

  1353. totally different

  1354. from those who

  1355. trust in

  1356. themselves.

  1357. God will

  1358. redeem me from

  1359. the realm of

  1360. the dead.

  1361. He will

  1362. surely take me

  1363. to himself.

  1364. So, death is

  1365. still coming.

  1366. He's still

  1367. going to the

  1368. realm of the

  1369. dead.

  1370. He knows

  1371. this.

  1372. But, there's

  1373. a hope beyond

  1374. that.

  1375. Because, God

  1376. will redeem me.

  1377. He will buy me

  1378. back from

  1379. death.

  1380. This word

  1381. takes us back

  1382. to verse 7.

  1383. No one can

  1384. redeem the life

  1385. of another so

  1386. that they should

  1387. live on forever

  1388. and not see

  1389. decay.

  1390. But, wait.

  1391. There is

  1392. someone who

  1393. can pay

  1394. death's ransom.

  1395. There is

  1396. one who has

  1397. enough to

  1398. redeem us,

  1399. to ransom

  1400. us from the

  1401. eternal clutches

  1402. of death.

  1403. God will

  1404. redeem me.

  1405. Quite

  1406. literally.

  1407. God will

  1408. redeem my

  1409. soul, my

  1410. life, from

  1411. the hand

  1412. of Sheol.

  1413. Sheol.

  1414. Now, Sheol

  1415. was that

  1416. ancient Hebrew

  1417. proper name

  1418. for the

  1419. realm of

  1420. the dead.

  1421. And, here,

  1422. Sheol is

  1423. personified as

  1424. if it was

  1425. like a

  1426. powerful being

  1427. who's got

  1428. his hand

  1429. outstretched

  1430. to receive

  1431. you when

  1432. you die.

  1433. And, so,

  1434. it's beautiful

  1435. how he

  1436. phrases this.

  1437. God is

  1438. going to

  1439. pay the

  1440. ransom

  1441. to set me

  1442. free from

  1443. the grip

  1444. of death.

  1445. He's going

  1446. to receive

  1447. me.

  1448. Death's hand

  1449. is not

  1450. going to

  1451. receive me.

  1452. He's going

  1453. to receive

  1454. me.

  1455. He's going

  1456. to take

  1457. me to

  1458. himself.

  1459. So, the

  1460. psalmist has

  1461. this beautiful

  1462. confidence and

  1463. hope in God

  1464. that even

  1465. though he

  1466. will die,

  1467. just like

  1468. everybody else,

  1469. God is

  1470. able to

  1471. rescue him

  1472. from that.

  1473. Do you

  1474. hear this

  1475. contrast in

  1476. verses 14

  1477. and 15?

  1478. Their forms

  1479. will decay

  1480. in the grave

  1481. far from

  1482. their princely

  1483. mansions,

  1484. but God

  1485. will redeem

  1486. me from

  1487. the realm

  1488. of the

  1489. dead.

  1490. So, you

  1491. look at those

  1492. people over

  1493. in the

  1494. cemetery

  1495. there.

  1496. Because I

  1497. trust in

  1498. the Lord,

  1499. my fate

  1500. will not

  1501. be the

  1502. same as

  1503. theirs,

  1504. is what

  1505. he's saying.

  1506. The ultimate

  1507. end of my

  1508. life, my

  1509. story, will

  1510. not be that

  1511. my body

  1512. just rotted

  1513. away in

  1514. the grave.

  1515. I may go

  1516. into that

  1517. grave, but

  1518. I'm coming

  1519. out of it

  1520. because God

  1521. will ransom

  1522. me from

  1523. the hand

  1524. of Sheol

  1525. and receive

  1526. me to

  1527. himself.

  1528. We skipped

  1529. over a part

  1530. of verse 14

  1531. here in

  1532. parentheses.

  1533. He said,

  1534. they are like

  1535. sheep and are

  1536. destined to

  1537. die.

  1538. Death will

  1539. be their

  1540. shepherd, but

  1541. the upright

  1542. will prevail

  1543. over them

  1544. in the

  1545. morning.

  1546. I love

  1547. this statement.

  1548. So here's

  1549. the second

  1550. answer to

  1551. this big

  1552. question.

  1553. Why shouldn't

  1554. I fear when

  1555. evil days

  1556. come, when

  1557. the wicked

  1558. prosper all

  1559. around me?

  1560. Because we

  1561. who are

  1562. upright and

  1563. trust in

  1564. God will

  1565. prevail over

  1566. the wicked

  1567. in the

  1568. end.

  1569. This is

  1570. the long

  1571. view.

  1572. This is

  1573. the truth

  1574. of what's

  1575. coming.

  1576. In other

  1577. words, God

  1578. may allow

  1579. evil days

  1580. to come

  1581. here on

  1582. earth.

  1583. He may

  1584. allow wicked

  1585. deceivers to

  1586. afflict his

  1587. people, but

  1588. it's just

  1589. momentary for

  1590. a short

  1591. time, like

  1592. the darkness

  1593. of night.

  1594. But dawn is

  1595. coming.

  1596. Morning is

  1597. coming.

  1598. A new day

  1599. is coming for

  1600. this world.

  1601. And when it

  1602. comes, the

  1603. righteous, the

  1604. upright, those

  1605. who trust in

  1606. the Lord, they

  1607. will prevail over

  1608. the wicked.

  1609. I love that

  1610. language.

  1611. It speaks of

  1612. triumph.

  1613. It assures us

  1614. that no matter

  1615. what people do

  1616. here on this

  1617. earth, we

  1618. need not be

  1619. worried.

  1620. We don't need

  1621. to fret.

  1622. We don't need

  1623. to be anxious

  1624. or fearful

  1625. because in the

  1626. long scheme

  1627. of things,

  1628. justice is

  1629. coming.

  1630. And the

  1631. tables will be

  1632. turned.

  1633. That great

  1634. leveler, death

  1635. is coming.

  1636. for all of

  1637. us.

  1638. And at the

  1639. end, when the

  1640. sun rises, when

  1641. Jesus Christ

  1642. returns in

  1643. glory, God

  1644. will vindicate

  1645. his people.

  1646. He'll put us

  1647. on the

  1648. victor's throne.

  1649. So this song,

  1650. I mean, it

  1651. really drives us

  1652. to this most

  1653. important question.

  1654. Have you put

  1655. your trust

  1656. in the Lord?

  1657. Lord, is your

  1658. hope in him?

  1659. Is he your

  1660. treasure?

  1661. Are you

  1662. depending on

  1663. him?

  1664. Is he the one

  1665. that you're

  1666. living for?

  1667. A thousand

  1668. years later,

  1669. God sent his

  1670. son, Jesus.

  1671. And Jesus,

  1672. amazingly, not

  1673. really surprisingly,

  1674. preached the

  1675. same message.

  1676. on one

  1677. occasion, Mark

  1678. 8, 36, he

  1679. asked this

  1680. question, what

  1681. good is it for

  1682. someone to gain

  1683. the whole world

  1684. yet forfeit

  1685. their soul?

  1686. Same kind of

  1687. idea in this

  1688. psalm.

  1689. He went on and

  1690. asked a follow-up

  1691. question.

  1692. What can anyone

  1693. give in exchange

  1694. for their soul?

  1695. Answer,

  1696. nothing.

  1697. No payment is

  1698. enough.

  1699. It's the same

  1700. message.

  1701. He said, do

  1702. not work for

  1703. food that

  1704. spoils, but

  1705. for food that

  1706. endures to

  1707. eternal life,

  1708. which the

  1709. Son of Man

  1710. will give

  1711. you.

  1712. One of my

  1713. favorite sayings

  1714. of Jesus to

  1715. Mary, I am

  1716. the resurrection

  1717. and the life,

  1718. he said.

  1719. The one who

  1720. believes in me

  1721. will live,

  1722. even though

  1723. they die,

  1724. and whoever

  1725. lives by

  1726. believing in

  1727. me will

  1728. never die.

  1729. He preached

  1730. the same

  1731. message.

  1732. As God in

  1733. the flesh, he

  1734. called people to

  1735. trust in him

  1736. and in the

  1737. Father.

  1738. He promised

  1739. eternal life,

  1740. resurrection,

  1741. raising him up

  1742. at the last

  1743. day, and then

  1744. he went on to

  1745. pay the ransom

  1746. for us that

  1747. God's penalty

  1748. of death

  1749. required.

  1750. He died on

  1751. the cross

  1752. to redeem

  1753. us, to

  1754. buy us back

  1755. for God.

  1756. He came

  1757. not to be

  1758. served, but

  1759. to serve and

  1760. to give his

  1761. life as a

  1762. ransom for

  1763. many.

  1764. Three days

  1765. after he

  1766. died, God

  1767. gave us the

  1768. ultimate sign

  1769. that the hope

  1770. of this songwriter

  1771. here in verse

  1772. 15 was well

  1773. placed.

  1774. God raised

  1775. Jesus back

  1776. to life

  1777. from the

  1778. dead, and

  1779. his promise

  1780. is that he

  1781. will do the

  1782. same for

  1783. all who

  1784. trust in

  1785. the Lord,

  1786. who trust

  1787. in him.

  1788. Have you

  1789. put your

  1790. trust in

  1791. him?

  1792. It's the

  1793. most important

  1794. decision of

  1795. life.

  1796. There are

  1797. only two

  1798. fates to be

  1799. had.

  1800. Which do

  1801. you choose?

  1802. Once we've

  1803. got that

  1804. straight, and

  1805. I'll end

  1806. with this,

  1807. there are two

  1808. questions that

  1809. this song

  1810. leads us

  1811. to, and

  1812. I just

  1813. want to

  1814. leave these

  1815. with you

  1816. to think

  1817. about through

  1818. the week.

  1819. The first

  1820. question is

  1821. this, have

  1822. I got my

  1823. priorities

  1824. straight?

  1825. Have I

  1826. got my

  1827. priorities

  1828. straight?

  1829. Oh, this

  1830. song hits

  1831. us there about

  1832. this.

  1833. And two, am

  1834. I fretting

  1835. needlessly

  1836. about others?

  1837. We may

  1838. need to

  1839. confess some

  1840. things to

  1841. God today

  1842. or this

  1843. week, and

  1844. to repent.

  1845. We may need

  1846. to come back

  1847. to the

  1848. priorities that

  1849. he has for

  1850. us.

  1851. We may

  1852. need to

  1853. find the

  1854. peace that

  1855. he has for

  1856. us, for

  1857. our hearts

  1858. today.

  1859. Let's pray.

  1860. Let's

  1861. pray.

  1862. Father in

  1863. heaven, thank

  1864. you for this

  1865. sober reminder

  1866. that you've

  1867. given us in

  1868. this song, that

  1869. our lives are

  1870. short, and

  1871. that we can

  1872. waste our

  1873. lives going

  1874. after things

  1875. that we will

  1876. lose.

  1877. And I pray

  1878. that you would

  1879. do that work in

  1880. our hearts, that

  1881. you would put

  1882. that wisdom

  1883. inside of us,

  1884. convict us of

  1885. our sins, Lord,

  1886. set our priorities

  1887. straight.

  1888. Forgive us for

  1889. those times,

  1890. those moments

  1891. where we have

  1892. chased after the

  1893. stuff of this

  1894. world.

  1895. We ask for

  1896. that peace, that

  1897. security that

  1898. cannot be shaken

  1899. by anything.

  1900. Put our eyes

  1901. on Jesus and

  1902. on the life

  1903. that he gives.

  1904. We ask in his

  1905. name.

  1906. Amen.

  1907. Amen.
