  1. Paul refuting the false teaching of asceticism, this idea that through self-denial and depriving

  2. your body, you can come closer to God.

  3. And Paul said, no, everything God created is good and nothing is to be rejected if it

  4. is received with thanksgiving.

  5. And now what follows in this chapter is a whole bunch of general instructions, one after

  6. another which Paul gives to Timothy.

  7. And some of these instructions are quite specifically for Timothy and others are here for both him

  8. and the whole church.

  9. I've broken this passage up, the rest of this chapter up into two pieces.

  10. The first is the trustworthy saying in verses 6 to 11, the saying that we should all be taught

  11. and obey.

  12. And the second is the example of a faithful minister that Timothy is to set.

  13. That's in verses 12 to 16.

  14. So let's begin to work through this and see what the Lord would say to us as a church this

  15. morning.

  16. Starting in verse 6, Paul writes to Timothy,

  17. So this first statement just reflects back to what we heard last Sunday.

  18. Paul just finished telling Timothy about these false teachers that are going to arise and

  19. the false teaching that they're going to bring.

  20. And he was giving the truth that refutes that.

  21. So Paul says, now take care to teach these things from verses 1 to 5.

  22. Teach that to the brothers and sisters in the church.

  23. Warn them.

  24. And if you do, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus.

  25. Then Paul goes on and he gives another instruction in verse 7.

  26. He says, have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives tales.

  27. Rather, train yourself to be godly.

  28. This is the second time that Paul brings up this issue of myths.

  29. And we heard Paul say that this was the problem with the false teachers back in chapter 1,

  30. verses 3 and 4.

  31. Back there he said to Timothy, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people

  32. not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless

  33. genealogies.

  34. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God's work.

  35. So here he picks up this problem again in chapter 4, verse 7.

  36. But this time he's speaking directly to Timothy himself.

  37. It's like he's saying, don't get sucked in to these distractions.

  38. Godless myths and old wives tales.

  39. So this must be a real problem in the church.

  40. We so easily get off of what we should be focused on and onto other things.

  41. We drift off from the gospel, from that focus on Christ and how we should be living for him

  42. and into these side things.

  43. Both myths and old wives tales have one thing in common.

  44. They refer to stuff that's not verifiably true.

  45. Stories.

  46. Speculation.

  47. The Greek word here for old wives tales made me chuckle a little bit.

  48. It means the gossip that elderly women promote.

  49. I don't think it means disrespect to elderly women in general.

  50. But, you know, this is kind of the thing that sometimes happens.

  51. They're elderly.

  52. They're not busy working or raising children or attending to their homes as much anymore.

  53. And so what do they do?

  54. Well, they would spend a lot of time just talking about all kinds of stuff.

  55. Telling stories.

  56. Spreading gossip.

  57. Speculating about all kinds of things.

  58. And Paul's instruction to Timothy is strong here.

  59. He says, have nothing to do with that.

  60. Refuse it.

  61. Avoid it.

  62. Reject it.

  63. That kind of talk.

  64. That kind of gossip is godless, says Paul.

  65. It's worthless.

  66. It doesn't edify people.

  67. It's distracting them.

  68. So have nothing to do with it.

  69. Rather, train yourself to be godly.

  70. Now let's hone in on this word godly.

  71. What does it mean to be godly?

  72. This is a word that, in my opinion, has been poorly translated into English by all the major translations today.

  73. It's translated this way, the same in almost all of them.

  74. Some say in godliness.

  75. As if we all intuitively know what it means to be godly.

  76. Or what it means to have godliness.

  77. Yes.

  78. But then I think if I was to ask you guys how to, what that means to define it, I think that we'd probably hear a variety of different answers.

  79. Some people think it means to be like god.

  80. But in what ways?

  81. And based on what?

  82. Some people think it means to be good.

  83. To be a moral person.

  84. Others think it means to have a good character.

  85. The kind of character that pleases God.

  86. And the problem here is that we, today, in our language, we don't really have a really great, single, modern English word that captures the meaning here.

  87. Piety would be a good word.

  88. But it's so old that most of us don't even know what it means anymore.

  89. And it's got this negative connotation to it as well.

  90. Hypocritically virtuous.

  91. Well, that doesn't fit.

  92. Religious would also be a good word.

  93. But over time, that word has changed in meaning too.

  94. And it's got a lot of baggage now.

  95. And even amongst Christians, we kind of give it a negative twist.

  96. We kind of pit it against relationship with God.

  97. And use it to describe a more works-based kind of spirituality.

  98. The meaning of this word, godly or godliness, is to be devout.

  99. To be devoted to God.

  100. It's not first and foremost about a person's moral behavior or character traits.

  101. It's about a person's giving themselves to God.

  102. It's a very relational word.

  103. In this context, to the one true God, the Lord, Jesus Christ.

  104. Now, a person who's devoted to God, they will live a holy life.

  105. I mean, they will grow in their faith.

  106. And that will transform their conduct.

  107. It will change the way they live.

  108. But those things, how we live, that's the fruit of our devotion to God.

  109. And so, what does Paul mean when he says to be godly?

  110. He means to be a person who is devoted to God and his son Jesus.

  111. In the ways that God has said that we should be, of course.

  112. It's an orientation of the heart first.

  113. Humility towards God.

  114. Reverence.

  115. Holy fear of God.

  116. Faith in God.

  117. A submissiveness.

  118. A willingness to obey God.

  119. To be devoted to God means to be a worshiper of God.

  120. To love God.

  121. A desire to please him.

  122. And then, that devotion, it will spill out into how we live.

  123. And it will transform us and our character.

  124. I think this distinction is really important.

  125. Paul is not saying, train yourself to be good.

  126. It's not just about morals.

  127. He's not saying, train yourself to be like God.

  128. He's saying, train yourself to be devoted to God.

  129. Quite literally.

  130. Train yourself toward devoutness.

  131. Train yourself to be devoted to God.

  132. Train yourself to be devoted to God.

  133. Train yourself to be devoted to God.

  134. And it's here that Paul borrows from the language of the athletic world.

  135. Train yourself to be devoted to God.

  136. This word in the original, actually, it's the same word that we get our word gymnasium from.

  137. The gym part of that.

  138. Or gymnastics.

  139. I love this metaphor.

  140. Train yourself to be devoted to God.

  141. In other words, don't just sit around and wait for it to happen.

  142. Don't just sit there and wait for God to get your attention.

  143. And change your life.

  144. Don't just go on with your life and wait until a day when you just somehow start to feel like praying.

  145. Or feel like reading your Bible.

  146. No, when it comes to devotion to God, Paul says, train yourself toward that.

  147. Go after it.

  148. Pursue devotion tenaciously.

  149. In the same way that an athlete prepares to compete.

  150. I think there's a huge lesson to be learned here from the world of sports.

  151. What do athletes do to win?

  152. They train.

  153. They adjust their lives.

  154. They rearrange their priorities.

  155. They change the way they eat.

  156. They adjust all their habits.

  157. They put time and effort into practicing and exercising and building skill.

  158. They make themselves repeat the things needed again and again to build the skill.

  159. They practice the jump shot again and again or the serve.

  160. They build these habits into their lives.

  161. And they're consistent about it.

  162. They repeat them.

  163. Because they know that that's what will yield the results needed to win.

  164. Paul's saying, Timothy, you know the way that people approach sports like that?

  165. Take that kind of approach towards being devoted to God.

  166. Go after it.

  167. Rearrange your life.

  168. Make it a priority.

  169. Make it a priority.

  170. Change your habits.

  171. Get yourself off the spiritual couch.

  172. And kick your bum out the door spiritually.

  173. Start doing the things consistently and regularly that will lead you deeper in your devotion to God.

  174. Put the time in.

  175. Put the time in.

  176. Put the effort in.

  177. Train yourself to be godly.

  178. To be devoted to God.

  179. This is Paul's biggest instruction in this part of the letter.

  180. And Paul gives us some encouragement to go with it.

  181. Some perspective.

  182. In verse 8.

  183. Train yourself to be godly.

  184. For physical training is of some value.

  185. But godliness has value for all things.

  186. Holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

  187. So here's some perspective, Timothy.

  188. Physical training is of some value.

  189. This is the exercise verse in the Bible.

  190. There's some value to physical exercise.

  191. There's health benefits that come from it.

  192. It's good for the body.

  193. Helps you build strength and coordination and flexibility.

  194. And burn fat.

  195. Keep your heart strong.

  196. And yes, even sometimes win the game.

  197. Physical training is of some value.

  198. But here's the contrast.

  199. The perspective.

  200. Devoted to godness has value for all things.

  201. This one motivational truth alone is worth more than gold.

  202. Going to the gym.

  203. Going for a walk.

  204. Going for a run.

  205. Practicing with your team.

  206. It has some value.

  207. But only in a couple aspects of life.

  208. Whether physical health.

  209. Whether physical health.

  210. Or performance on the team.

  211. But devoted to godness.

  212. Will bring benefit to every area of your life.

  213. In all things.

  214. It has value for all things.

  215. And so let's make a list of everything.

  216. Finances.

  217. Marriage.

  218. Parenting.

  219. Work.

  220. Promise keeping.

  221. Decision making.

  222. Love.

  223. Romance.

  224. Gift giving.

  225. Perseverance.

  226. Perseverance.

  227. Patience.

  228. Rest.

  229. Leisure.

  230. Anxiety.

  231. Doubt.

  232. Temptation.

  233. Productivity.

  234. Big moments in life.

  235. Little moments in life.

  236. Youth.

  237. Old age.

  238. Conflict resolution.

  239. Leadership.

  240. Serving.

  241. Art.

  242. Driving.

  243. How to talk to Nate when he pulls you over for speeding.

  244. Forgiveness.

  245. Hope.

  246. Faith.

  247. Joy.

  248. Diaper changing.

  249. Garbage removal.

  250. Conversation.

  251. Listening.

  252. Speaking.

  253. Responsibility.

  254. And the list can go on forever.

  255. Because all things really means all things.

  256. Everything in life.

  257. Is affected positively.

  258. Beneficially.

  259. When we train ourselves towards being devoted to God.

  260. God really can.

  261. And he really does change every aspect of your life for the better.

  262. If you will give your whole life to him.

  263. Once upon a time.

  264. As an example.

  265. I was quite afraid to get up in front of people.

  266. I used to hate public speaking.

  267. I didn't want to do anything like that.

  268. I'll help make the presentation.

  269. I'll write the words for it.

  270. I'll type it up.

  271. And I'll give you the sheet.

  272. And you can go read it.

  273. And present it in front of the class.

  274. But I hated to be in front of people.

  275. I was so afraid.

  276. My palms would sweat.

  277. My tongue would be dry.

  278. My heart would race.

  279. Until finally in my journey of devoting myself to Christ.

  280. I sensed God's call.

  281. To be a shepherd.

  282. In the church someday.

  283. Well now what am I going to do?

  284. Sensing the call didn't take away my fear.

  285. Not one bit.

  286. But God gave me one opportunity after another.

  287. And each one I had to meet with prayer.

  288. And inward struggle.

  289. And it was a fight to say yes to God.

  290. Over and over and over again.

  291. To trust his promises.

  292. And to press forward.

  293. One speech.

  294. One devotional.

  295. One public speaking moment at a time.

  296. And then one day I looked up from this pulpit.

  297. Here in Davidson.

  298. And I realized.

  299. I'm just not afraid of this anymore.

  300. There's only one person in my audience.

  301. That I need to fear.

  302. And it's God himself.

  303. And he has said.

  304. Preach the word.

  305. Be faithful in season.

  306. And out of season.

  307. That's just one.

  308. Unexpected area of my life.

  309. That God has turned upside down.

  310. As a result of me.

  311. Pursuing.

  312. Trying to devote myself.

  313. To Christ.

  314. And now training yourself.

  315. Towards devotedness.

  316. Impacts all things.

  317. Every aspect of your life.

  318. When you become a follower of Jesus.

  319. God's own spirit.

  320. Takes up residence inside of you.

  321. And when you surrender yourself.

  322. And you devote yourself.

  323. To God.

  324. With tenacity.

  325. And vigor.

  326. Like he's talking about.

  327. In these.

  328. These verses.

  329. God's power is unleashed.

  330. In you.

  331. And on you.

  332. And you are never the same.

  333. Every area.

  334. Transformed.

  335. For the better.

  336. In countless ways.

  337. Oh how we need.

  338. This perspective.

  339. Without it.

  340. We may put a lot of effort.

  341. A lot of time.

  342. A lot of energy.

  343. Into all kinds of things.

  344. But maybe things.

  345. That only have some value.

  346. Only a little value.

  347. In the grand scheme of things.

  348. You may be working hard.

  349. You may be putting a lot.

  350. Into this.

  351. But maybe it's a thing.

  352. That matters very little.

  353. Put that energy.

  354. Put that time.

  355. Into being devoted to God.

  356. And watch every area.

  357. Of your life.

  358. Strengthen.

  359. Flourish.

  360. And blossom.

  361. And there's more perspective.

  362. To be had.

  363. He says.

  364. For physical training.

  365. Is of some value.

  366. But godliness.

  367. Has value for all things.

  368. Holding promise.

  369. For both the present life.

  370. And the life to come.

  371. Going to the gym.

  372. Going for another run.

  373. Practicing with your sports team.

  374. Again and again and again.

  375. Well that's only for the benefit.

  376. In this life.

  377. In this world.

  378. But there's a life to come.

  379. He reminds us.

  380. There's a life beyond the grave.

  381. There's a kingdom.

  382. That's eternal.

  383. For which we were made.

  384. And saved.

  385. And devoting yourself to God.

  386. All in.

  387. Brings benefit.

  388. And reward.

  389. Both here.

  390. And now.

  391. And.

  392. In that kingdom.

  393. In that life.

  394. That eternal.

  395. Kingdom.

  396. That's coming.

  397. In verse 9.

  398. Paul says.

  399. This is a trustworthy saying.

  400. That deserves full acceptance.

  401. It's like Paul just took the highlighter out.

  402. And just went back over all that he's just said.

  403. Timothy.

  404. You can bet your life on this.

  405. Don't hesitate to embrace this.

  406. Fully.

  407. Don't just listen to these words.

  408. And take it in half-heartedly.

  409. Take them all the way in.

  410. Accept it fully.

  411. All in.

  412. As a side note.

  413. If you're looking to memorize anything in God's word.

  414. To grow your faith.

  415. These trustworthy sayings.

  416. In first Timothy.

  417. Are a great place to start.

  418. Paul says.

  419. That is why we labor.

  420. And strive.

  421. Because we have.

  422. Because we have put our hope in the living God.

  423. Who is the savior of all people.

  424. And especially of those who believe.

  425. Notice the two words.

  426. That Paul uses there.

  427. Both of them.

  428. Have an intensity.

  429. To them.

  430. We labor.

  431. We work hard.

  432. We strive.

  433. We struggle forward.

  434. So Paul is not the lazy.

  435. Overweight coach.

  436. That's sitting on the sidelines.

  437. Telling Timothy.

  438. To run faster.

  439. And go harder.

  440. Well he sits there.

  441. Himself.

  442. No.

  443. He himself.

  444. Paul himself.

  445. Is training.

  446. Towards.

  447. Devoutness.

  448. He himself.

  449. Is putting in the reps.

  450. Wherever he is.

  451. He's living vigorously.

  452. Even though it's hard.

  453. Let's remember.

  454. Says Paul.

  455. We aren't worshiping.

  456. Some lifeless idol.

  457. Or some idea.

  458. Like the pagans.

  459. All around us.

  460. We have put our hope.

  461. In the living God.

  462. And he's the savior.

  463. Of all people.

  464. The eternal salvation.

  465. Or destruction.

  466. Of people.

  467. Is on the line.

  468. It's at stake.

  469. Here.

  470. And we have.

  471. Word.

  472. And news.

  473. Of a savior.

  474. For.

  475. For everyone.

  476. For all people.

  477. The whole world.

  478. And so.

  479. It's like Paul saying.

  480. We're working.

  481. Our butts off.

  482. To get the word out.

  483. We struggle forward.

  484. Despite difficulty.

  485. And opposition.

  486. And even persecution.

  487. Do you hear that fire.

  488. Of devoutness.

  489. In Paul's own heart.

  490. Take it easy.

  491. Is the message.

  492. That the world around us.

  493. Is saying to us.

  494. Take it easy.

  495. Paul's saying.

  496. The exact opposite.

  497. Train yourself.

  498. To be devoted to God.

  499. Join.

  500. With us.

  501. Timothy.

  502. Labor with us.

  503. Struggle with us.

  504. We serve the living God.

  505. And lives are on the line.

  506. Verse 11.

  507. He says.

  508. Command.

  509. And teach.

  510. These things.

  511. Don't miss this verse.

  512. We might have tried to excuse ourselves here.

  513. By saying that all this.

  514. Well that's really just Paul's instructions.

  515. To Timothy.

  516. Or it's just for pastors.

  517. And leaders in the church.

  518. That Paul says.

  519. Everything that I just taught you.

  520. And commanded you.

  521. To train yourself.

  522. To be devoted to God.

  523. Timothy.

  524. Turn around and.

  525. Teach.

  526. And command that.

  527. To the people in your church.

  528. Don't think that your pastor.

  529. Or your elders.

  530. Are the only ones in the church.

  531. Who should be all in.

  532. Completely devoted to God.

  533. If you are a believer in Jesus.

  534. The command to train yourself.

  535. To be devoted to God.

  536. Is for you.

  537. And.

  538. So is the encouragement.

  539. And the perspective.

  540. That goes with it.

  541. Belonging to the body of Christ.

  542. As a follower of Jesus.

  543. I'm going to put it this way.

  544. It comes.

  545. With a spiritual.

  546. Gym membership.

  547. We are all to train ourselves.

  548. Toward.

  549. Devoutness.

  550. And the best part about it.

  551. Is we can train together.

  552. We can spur one another on.

  553. And encourage each other.

  554. And help each other with this.

  555. So this is the first part.

  556. This is the trustworthy saying.

  557. That we are.

  558. Should all be taught.

  559. And obey.

  560. Now we come to that second.

  561. Section of this passage.

  562. Where Jesus.

  563. Through Paul.

  564. Is going to tell Timothy.

  565. What kind of example.

  566. He is to set.

  567. For the people.

  568. In the church.

  569. He writes.

  570. Don't let anyone look down on you.

  571. Because you are young.

  572. But set an example.

  573. For the believers.

  574. In speech.

  575. In conduct.

  576. In love.

  577. In love.

  578. In faith.

  579. And in purity.

  580. So this is.

  581. Might feel like a daunting task.

  582. To Timothy.

  583. there are men and women in the church

  584. who are older than he is

  585. why should we listen to you

  586. Timothy

  587. you're young

  588. what could you possibly know

  589. that we don't

  590. we have experience

  591. we have the wisdom that comes with age

  592. or maybe they're saying

  593. something different

  594. Timothy

  595. whoa

  596. cool the jets

  597. you've got all this energy and fire

  598. because you're young

  599. you don't have a family

  600. you don't have responsibilities yet

  601. just simmer down

  602. cool off

  603. take it easy

  604. there's no rush here

  605. Paul says

  606. don't let anyone look down on you Timothy

  607. because you are young

  608. don't let older people

  609. discourage you

  610. but how do I influence

  611. people who are older than me

  612. how do I instruct them

  613. how do I lead them

  614. Paul says this is the way

  615. don't just do it with words

  616. set them an example

  617. with your life

  618. an example to follow

  619. give them an example

  620. to follow

  621. with the words

  622. that you speak

  623. in speech

  624. show them

  625. how a follower of Jesus

  626. ought to speak

  627. to other people

  628. model that for them

  629. give them an example

  630. to follow in your conduct

  631. show them how a follower of Christ

  632. ought to

  633. behave themselves

  634. and act

  635. give them an example

  636. to follow

  637. in your love

  638. show them how a follower of Jesus

  639. sincerely and persistently

  640. loves the people around them

  641. give them an example

  642. to follow

  643. in your faith

  644. show them how a follower of Christ

  645. trusts God's word

  646. and hangs on to his promises

  647. and holds on to the things

  648. that he has said

  649. as truth

  650. and finally Timothy

  651. give them an example

  652. to follow

  653. in your purity

  654. just like

  655. today

  656. the city of Ephesus

  657. was known

  658. for being filled

  659. with all kinds of

  660. sexual immorality

  661. and so Timothy

  662. show them

  663. by your own life

  664. how a follower of Jesus

  665. ought to live

  666. when it comes

  667. to sexuality

  668. and to marriage

  669. show them

  670. how your attitude

  671. should be

  672. towards women

  673. how you should treat

  674. women

  675. purity

  676. with purity

  677. is it possible

  678. for a young person

  679. to influence

  680. people who are older

  681. than they are

  682. for Christ

  683. absolutely

  684. you better believe it

  685. how do we do it

  686. we do it

  687. by how we live

  688. by setting an example

  689. in all of these areas

  690. of our lives

  691. there's something

  692. utterly compelling

  693. about

  694. a person

  695. who is completely

  696. devoted to God

  697. and to Christ Jesus

  698. and so those of you

  699. who are young

  700. or younger

  701. don't think

  702. for a moment

  703. that you can't

  704. make a difference

  705. don't think

  706. that you can't

  707. be used by God

  708. to shape the lives

  709. of other people

  710. absolutely

  711. you can

  712. even people

  713. who are older

  714. than you

  715. win their respect

  716. by how you live

  717. how you speak

  718. how you act

  719. how you love

  720. how you believe

  721. and how you live

  722. in purity

  723. for those of us

  724. who are older

  725. are we off the hook

  726. here

  727. is it only the younger

  728. that should set

  729. an example

  730. with their lives

  731. well of course not

  732. this is for

  733. old and young

  734. this is how Jesus

  735. wants all his people

  736. to live

  737. as an example

  738. for the other believers

  739. in the church

  740. but it might be

  741. a little different

  742. this verse

  743. for those of us

  744. who are older

  745. how do you see

  746. the younger people

  747. in the church

  748. the younger believers

  749. are you tempted

  750. to look down

  751. on them

  752. if God's spirit

  753. dwells

  754. within

  755. his people

  756. all of them

  757. even the young ones

  758. then there are many

  759. things that we can learn

  760. even from younger

  761. brothers and sisters

  762. in the faith

  763. the question is

  764. do we have the humility

  765. to listen

  766. and to learn

  767. from them

  768. verse 13

  769. Paul says

  770. until I come

  771. devote yourself

  772. to the public

  773. reading of scripture

  774. to preaching

  775. and to teaching

  776. do not neglect

  777. your gift

  778. which was given you

  779. through prophecy

  780. when the body

  781. of elders

  782. laid their hands

  783. on you

  784. now these instructions

  785. are very specifically

  786. for Timothy

  787. they pertain

  788. to his leadership

  789. in the church

  790. and these are the things

  791. that are to be

  792. his priorities

  793. as a leader

  794. in the church

  795. public reading

  796. of scripture

  797. preaching

  798. or proclamation

  799. and teaching

  800. and Paul alludes

  801. to a special

  802. spiritual gift

  803. that he received

  804. in a moment

  805. where somebody

  806. spoke a word

  807. of prophecy

  808. we don't get

  809. all the details

  810. about that

  811. as much as

  812. we might like

  813. to know more

  814. about that

  815. but this is

  816. encouragement

  817. Paul is saying

  818. you've been given

  819. a gift by God

  820. don't let it go

  821. unused

  822. use it

  823. now this applies

  824. to us a little

  825. differently

  826. here today

  827. first of all

  828. not everyone

  829. who does the work

  830. of teaching

  831. and preaching

  832. in the church

  833. has a prophetic

  834. word

  835. or a special gift

  836. like Timothy

  837. had

  838. and not everyone

  839. in our church

  840. of course

  841. is a preacher

  842. or teacher

  843. but what is

  844. your role

  845. in this body

  846. in this family

  847. what has God

  848. specially gifted

  849. you for

  850. and made you

  851. for

  852. what are you

  853. competent in

  854. that you can use

  855. to build up

  856. the family of God

  857. and are you

  858. using it

  859. second

  860. let's not

  861. miss the importance

  862. of being a church

  863. today

  864. where scripture

  865. God's word

  866. is read

  867. proclaimed

  868. and taught

  869. this is how

  870. we are to function

  871. in the household

  872. of God

  873. we are to be

  874. people

  875. people

  876. of the book

  877. people

  878. who regularly

  879. hear

  880. and read

  881. the scriptures

  882. we are to have

  883. regular preaching

  884. and teaching

  885. in our church

  886. and there are

  887. two sides

  888. to this

  889. there is

  890. the side

  891. of the preachers

  892. and teachers

  893. to be diligent

  894. in their study

  895. and in their prayer

  896. and meditating

  897. and preparing

  898. to teach

  899. so that what

  900. they teach

  901. is clear

  902. and accurate

  903. and actually

  904. from the word

  905. of God

  906. but there is

  907. also the side

  908. of the listeners

  909. to show up

  910. to have hearts

  911. ready to receive

  912. a willingness

  913. to respond

  914. and put into practice

  915. the things

  916. that we hear

  917. from God's word

  918. whether here

  919. in the message

  920. or in Sunday school

  921. or on Tuesday nights

  922. it is at least

  923. a two part act

  924. to fulfill this

  925. in our church

  926. if Charles

  927. does all the work

  928. of preparing

  929. a lesson

  930. from the Bible

  931. for your kids

  932. so that they can

  933. grow in their faith

  934. but you don't

  935. bring your kids

  936. it doesn't happen

  937. it doesn't work

  938. Jesus is saying

  939. that this is the way

  940. a church

  941. ought to function

  942. this is how

  943. we should operate

  944. this is how

  945. we should conduct

  946. ourselves

  947. by regular reading

  948. preaching

  949. and teaching

  950. of God's word

  951. and that puts

  952. responsibility

  953. on all of us

  954. some of us

  955. as teachers

  956. and preachers

  957. in our preparation

  958. and others of us

  959. to show up

  960. to be here

  961. with open ears

  962. and soft hearts

  963. ready to respond

  964. to whatever

  965. the Lord Jesus

  966. would say to us

  967. in these moments

  968. and this is

  969. absolutely

  970. critical

  971. for our health

  972. and our vitality

  973. as a church

  974. it's God's word

  975. that shapes

  976. and molds us

  977. into the kind

  978. of church

  979. that God

  980. wants us to be

  981. it's what's revealed

  982. about God

  983. in these pages

  984. that moves us

  985. to worship

  986. it's what's said

  987. about Jesus

  988. in here

  989. that makes us

  990. wise for salvation

  991. and gives us

  992. a message

  993. to run with

  994. it's the instructions

  995. that God's given

  996. in here

  997. that show us

  998. how to live

  999. and it's

  1000. in here

  1001. that we find

  1002. the motivation

  1003. to do those things

  1004. in a way

  1005. that honors Christ

1006. if we take the Bible

  1007. out of the church

  1008. the church

  1009. will very soon

  1010. be on life support

  1011. it won't be long

  1012. before we're just

  1013. an empty

  1014. lifeless

  1015. skeleton

  1016. of a church

  1017. where tradition

  1018. and friendship

  1019. are all that's left

  1020. but give God's word

  1021. it's regular place

  1022. to be heard

  1023. and considered

  1024. in our midst

  1025. and watch the church

  1026. come to life

  1027. watch lives

  1028. be changed

  1029. watch love

  1030. real sincere love

  1031. grow

  1032. in people's hearts

  1033. watch needs

  1034. be met

  1035. and initiatives

  1036. begun

  1037. and a community

  1038. reached

  1039. so this is why

  1040. Paul emphasizes

  1041. this so much

  1042. in his letters

  1043. to Timothy

  1044. devote yourself

  1045. not just give

1046. a little bit of time

  1047. but devote yourself

  1048. to the public reading

  1049. of scripture

  1050. to preaching

  1051. and to teaching

  1052. Paul goes on

  1053. he says

  1054. be diligent

  1055. in these matters

  1056. give yourself

  1057. wholly to them

  1058. so that everyone

  1059. may see your progress

  1060. watch your life

  1061. and doctrine

  1062. closely

  1063. persevere

  1064. in them

  1065. because if you do

  1066. you will save

  1067. both yourself

  1068. and your hearers

  1069. so careful

  1070. faithful

  1071. teaching and preaching

1072. of the word of God

  1073. in the church

  1074. makes the difference

  1075. between life

  1076. and death

  1077. heaven

  1078. and hell

  1079. the good news

  1080. about Christ Jesus

1081. and what he has done

  1082. it has the power

  1083. to save people

1084. but people can only believe

  1085. that good news

  1086. and be saved

  1087. if that's what

  1088. they're hearing

  1089. and so as teachers

  1090. and preachers

  1091. there's a sobering

  1092. responsibility

  1093. given to us

  1094. we're to take

  1095. extra special care

  1096. that what we teach

  1097. really is

  1098. what the Bible

  1099. is saying

  1100. we will be held

  1101. responsible

1102. not just for our own lives

1103. but also for the lives

  1104. of all

  1105. in the church

  1106. if we fail

  1107. to live

  1108. and teach

  1109. the word of God

  1110. watch your life

  1111. and doctrine

  1112. closely

  1113. by doing so

  1114. you will

  1115. save

  1116. both yourself

  1117. and your hearers

1118. so these are the instructions

  1119. that Christ has

  1120. for Timothy

  1121. about

  1122. how he wants

  1123. Timothy to set

  1124. an example

  1125. for others to follow

  1126. and to keep

  1127. the word of God

  1128. before the people

1129. let me just sum it up

  1130. as a church

  1131. as the very household

  1132. of God

  1133. we are to train

  1134. ourselves

  1135. to be devoted

  1136. to God

  1137. keeping in mind

  1138. the perspective

  1139. that Christ

  1140. has given us

  1141. our devotion

  1142. to him

  1143. has value

  1144. for all things

  1145. in life

  1146. and it holds promise

  1147. for this life

  1148. and the life

  1149. to come

  1150. and so we should

  1151. labor

  1152. we should strive

  1153. to devote ourselves

  1154. to Christ Jesus

  1155. and to do

1156. what he has commanded us

  1157. we should strive

  1158. to live exemplary lives

  1159. for all around us

  1160. who are watching

  1161. and we should be

  1162. a household

  1163. that regularly hears

  1164. and responds to

  1165. the reading

  1166. and preaching

  1167. and teaching

  1168. of God's word

  1169. which gives us

  1170. all of us

  1171. something to do

  1172. whether we're

  1173. preacher, teacher

  1174. or hearer

  1175. these are the words

  1176. of Christ

  1177. to Timothy

  1178. for the church

  1179. in Ephesus

  1180. and for us today

  1181. let's pray

  1182. Father in heaven

  1183. I pray

  1184. and ask

  1185. that

  1186. there would be

  1187. no heart

  1188. in this room

  1189. that is unstirred

  1190. by this call

  1191. to press forward

  1192. and devote ourselves

  1193. completely to you

  1194. Lord you know

  1195. the excuses

  1196. that we've made

  1197. and sometimes

  1198. we do this

  1199. for a season

1200. and then we drift away

  1201. or we grow cool

1202. I pray that you would

1203. stir it in each of our hearts

1204. and that all of us

  1205. would have a heart

  1206. that beats for you

1207. that we would follow you

  1208. all in

  1209. and love you

  1210. with all our heart

  1211. soul, mind

  1212. and strength

1213. I pray that you would

1214. turn all of our lives

  1215. upside down

  1216. for the good

  1217. and that you would

  1218. do something amazing

  1219. here in Davidson

1220. and in the surrounding area

  1221. as a result

  1222. so that you get

  1223. the glory

1224. and so that we can rejoice

  1225. in the part

1226. that we got to play

  1227. when you return

  1228. we ask this

  1229. in Jesus name

  1230. Amen
