  1. All right, as we come to God's Word this morning, we're continuing on through Paul's first letter to Timothy.

  2. We've already finished chapters 1 and 4, and we've almost finished chapter 2.

  3. Today, we'll be completing the rest of chapter 2.

  4. So if you have your Bible, you can open it up to 1 Timothy chapter 2.

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  5. Here in chapter 2, Paul has been giving instructions to the church.

  6. And he's already given specific instructions for the men, and then specific instructions for the women.

  7. And we considered those in previous weeks, but now Paul has to say more concerning the women.

  8. And in some ways, his words apply to us men as well, as we'll see in a moment.

  9. The big question that Paul is answering in these verses is,

  10. how should men and women conduct themselves in the church in relation to each other?

  11. How should men and women conduct themselves in the church in relation to each other?

  12. And specifically, is there a difference between the role of men and women in the church?

  13. Let's begin by reading the passage and hearing what Paul wrote to Timothy.

  14. 1 Timothy chapter 2, verse 11.

    1 Timothy 2:11

  15. Paul writes,

  16. Now before you run out the door, let me first state the obvious.

  17. These are difficult words for some of us to hear.

  18. Some of you women may find these words distasteful or even offensive.

  19. And some of you men might find them embarrassing.

  20. Why do we have this response?

  21. There are at least two reasons.

  22. One reason these words are difficult for us to hear is that when we listen to the world all around us,

  23. we hear the voice of feminism speaking loud and clear.

  24. And what is it saying?

  25. It's saying that men and women are equal in all respects.

  26. That history has long favored men.

  27. The voice of feminine is saying that women have been mistreated and oppressed by men.

  28. That they have been denied basic human rights.

  29. Such as the right to be educated, the right to vote, the right to work in certain occupations, or the right to own property.

  30. Now as we look back over human history, there is certainly some truth to these claims.

  31. Because of sin in the human heart, men have mistreated women.

  32. Men have oppressed women.

  33. Men are still doing that today.

  34. They use force.

  35. They use violence.

  36. They use rage and humiliation to dominate and to manipulate and to get their way.

  37. Men are often filled with lust.

  38. And treat women as objects to satisfy their lust.

  39. And we cannot excuse these evils done by men for a moment.

  40. So there is some truth to the cry of the feminists.

  41. Women are not second class citizens.

  42. They should be cherished and protected.

  43. Because just like us men, women are made in the image of God.

  44. What did God say?

  45. About the way he made humanity.

  46. Back in the first chapter of the Bible.

  47. It says,

  48. So God created man in his own image.

  49. In the image of God, he created him.

  50. Male and female, he created them.

  51. The parallelism here makes it clear.

  52. Both male and female, man and woman, are equally made in the image of God.

  53. Equally bear the image of God.

  54. And when men treat women as less and do not respect the image of God in them, it is wrong.

  55. So there has been some truth to the cry of the feminists over the years.

  56. But, mingled in with those cries for justice, the feminist movement has also cried out some other things as well.

  57. They cry out that men and women are equal in every respect.

  58. That women can and should do everything that men do.

  59. And should not be relegated to any particular role in society.

  60. But should be free to participate as equals in marriage, in the home, in the workplace, in government, and in the church.

  61. And the feminist movement has been very loud about this.

  62. And so anyone who holds to a more traditional view of marriage or family,

  63. or believes that women have been given a certain role,

  64. is shouted down as bigoted, oppressive, misogynistic, chauvinist.

  65. And so when we come to these words of Paul,

  66. they're difficult to hear.

  67. Because for some of us, we're thinking in our minds that Paul is promoting

  68. an oppressive, misogynistic, patriarchal authority structure in the church.

  69. But is he?

  70. Is it possible that God, our creator, really did create us,

  71. men and women, male and female,

  72. equal in his image,

  73. but quite intentionally with different roles

  74. to fulfill as men and women

  75. in the family,

  76. and in the home,

  77. and in the church?

  78. Is it possible that that was originally part of God's good design,

  79. right from the beginning,

  80. that there be real differences in male and female,

  81. men and women,

  82. even when it comes to role?

  83. Differences which complement each other

  84. and complete humanity.

  85. At the end of the day, we have to decide

  86. who gets to define

  87. what it means to be a woman.

  88. Is it culture?

  89. Is it culture?

  90. Society?

  91. Is it the government?

  92. Is it us?

  93. Or is it God?

  94. Let's remember, these words are not just the Apostle Paul's,

  95. but these are the words of Jesus Christ himself

  96. speaking through Paul,

  97. speaking on behalf

  98. of God,

  99. the very words of God.

  100. Letting culture define what it means to be a woman

  101. or a man

  102. is a recipe for disaster.

  103. Think about this.

  104. It wasn't long ago that the feminists were

  105. fighting with all their might

  106. to have everything be the same for women

  107. as for men.

  108. But now a new movement has arisen.

  109. The transgender and LGBTQ movement

  110. has taken the spotlight.

  111. And now many feminists can be found

  112. almost saying the exact opposite

  113. of what they used to be saying.

  114. The LGBTQ movement says that

  115. anybody can identify as a woman.

  116. And that if they do,

  117. they are one.

  118. And so should be granted

  119. all the same rights

  120. and special treatment

  121. and privileges

  122. that women have come to enjoy.

  123. And suddenly,

  124. now we hear

  125. many feminists

  126. saying the opposite

  127. of what they were saying before.

  128. Actually, there is a difference

  129. between men and women.

  130. And there are good reasons

  131. to keep some things separate

  132. like sports teams

  133. and change rooms.

  134. And some women are even saying,

  135. actually, it is the responsibility

  136. of the man

  137. to protect the woman

  138. since he is biologically stronger

  139. and oftentimes

  140. better suited to do so.

  141. And actually,

  142. I do want him to open the door for me.

  143. Culture doesn't decide truth.

  144. Truth.

  145. Opinions come and go.

  146. Trends and fads

  147. rise and fall.

  148. And that's why we have to go back

  149. to the Bible.

  150. Because it's the authoritative,

  151. definitive

  152. word of truth

  153. about who we are

  154. by the God who made us

  155. and loves us.

  156. The second reason

  157. these words might be hard to hear

  158. has to do with our fallen condition.

  159. There are quite a few places

  160. in the Bible

  161. where we see that

  162. all of us have this tendency

  163. to spurn authority

  164. of any kind.

  165. We don't want to be subject

  166. to anything

  167. or anyone.

  168. We want to be independent.

  169. We want to do whatever we want.

  170. And this

  171. impulse

  172. to spurn authority,

  173. it wasn't there

  174. right from the beginning.

  175. It came as a consequence

  176. of sin

  177. at the fall of man.

  178. And ever since,

  179. there's been a struggle

  180. for dominance,

  181. control,

  182. authority,

  183. and in all aspects

  184. of life.

  185. Yes,

  186. it even affects

  187. the relationship

  188. between a husband

  189. and wife

  190. in the family.

  191. And so,

  192. when we come to passages

  193. like this,

  194. we don't like them.

  195. Because it says

  196. that men should have authority

  197. in the church.

  198. And that women are not

  199. to have that

  200. over men.

  201. And so,

  202. our fallen condition

  203. makes these words

  204. hard to hear

  205. and hard to accept.

  206. So,

  207. there's been

  208. vigorous debate

  209. over this passage

  210. on the screen,

  211. even within the Christian church.

  212. This passage

  213. is at the heart

  214. of a great divide.

  215. And on one side

  216. of this divide

  217. is a group

  218. that call themselves

  219. complementarians.

  220. And on the other side,

  221. a group that calls themselves

  222. egalitarians.

  223. Whole books

  224. have been written

  225. on this issue

  226. of the role

  227. of men and women,

  228. especially

  229. in the home

  230. and in the church.

  231. But the debate here

  232. is not because

  233. the passage

  234. isn't clear.

  235. With the exception

  236. of the last verse,

  237. verse 15,

  238. which we won't really

  239. talk about this morning,

  240. the meaning of these words

  241. is quite clear.

  242. It is straightforward.

  243. But the reasons

  244. I just gave

  245. have led to

  246. all kinds of voices

  247. chiming in

  248. and muddying

  249. the waters here.

  250. people don't like

  251. the plain meaning

  252. of this passage.

  253. And so,

  254. they're looking for a way

  255. out of its

  256. straightforward meaning.

  257. Maybe this word

  258. doesn't really mean this.

  259. Maybe that word

  260. doesn't really mean that.

  261. Maybe that's not

  262. what Paul had in mind

  263. at all.

  264. Maybe this was only

  265. for the days of Ephesus

  266. or the first century.

  267. All of this

  268. is an indication

  269. that it's not

  270. that the passage

  271. is difficult

  272. to translate

  273. or to understand.

  274. It's that many

  275. just have difficulty

  276. accepting

  277. what it plainly says

  278. because of those

  279. two reasons

  280. I just gave.

  281. So,

  282. what is the Lord Jesus

  283. saying

  284. through Paul

  285. in this passage?

  286. I'm just going to

  287. spell it out for us.

  288. Then we'll look at

  289. some objections

  290. and then we'll talk

  291. implications

  292. and applications

  293. for us as a church

  294. today.

  295. What Paul means

  296. to say here

  297. is that women

  298. are not

  299. to teach

  300. men

  301. or

  302. have authority

  303. over men

  304. in the church.

  305. instead

  306. they are to

  307. submit

  308. to the leading

  309. men

  310. of the church

  311. by following

  312. their leadership

  313. and by learning

  314. from their teaching

  315. with a quiet

  316. spirit.

  317. Let me say

  318. that again.

  319. What Paul

  320. means to say

  321. here is that

  322. women are not

  323. to teach

  324. men

  325. or have

  326. authority

  327. over men

  328. in the church.

  329. Instead

  330. they are to

  331. submit

  332. to the leading

  333. men of the church

  334. by following

  335. their leadership

  336. and by learning

  337. from their teaching

  338. with a quiet

  339. spirit.

  340. This is

  341. verses 11

  342. and 12.

  343. Now let's

  344. look at

  345. some of these

  346. objections.

  347. The first

  348. one

  349. some people

  350. will point

  351. out that

  352. Paul says

  353. I do not

  354. permit

  355. a woman

  356. to teach

  357. or to

  358. have

  359. authority.

  360. Could it

  361. be that

  362. this was

  363. only Paul's

  364. rule?

  365. That for

  366. some

  367. unspecified

  368. reason

  369. he was

  370. just

  371. personally

  372. disinclined

  373. to having

  374. women

  375. teach

  376. or lead

  377. men

  378. in the

  379. church.

  380. But a

  381. careful

  382. reading

  383. of

  384. Paul's

  385. letters

  386. reveals

  387. that

  388. he

  389. uses

  390. this

  391. kind

  392. of

  393. phrasing

  394. in all

  395. of them

  396. and about

  397. all

  398. different

  399. matters.

  400. He also

  401. frequently

  402. uses

  403. the first

  404. person.

  405. Look back

  406. up to

  407. verse 8

  408. he said

  409. therefore

  410. I want

  411. the men

  412. everywhere

  413. to pray.

  414. This

  415. isn't just

  416. Paul's

  417. personal

  418. wish.

  419. Everything

  420. that he's

  421. desiring

  422. and directing

  423. the church

  424. to do

  425. comes through

  426. his apostolic

  427. authority

  428. from Jesus

  429. Christ

  430. himself.

  431. Another

  432. objection

  433. that some

  434. bring

  435. is that

  436. women

  437. shouldn't

  438. take

  439. authority

  440. but may

  441. be given

  442. authority.

  443. So they

  444. will point

  445. out the

  446. language

  447. I do

  448. not permit

  449. a woman

  450. to have

  451. authority

  452. over a

  453. man

  454. and just

  455. recently

  456. there's

  457. been a

  458. shift.

  459. Let's

  460. translate that

  461. differently

  462. to assume

  463. authority

  464. over a

  465. man.

  466. This is a

  467. highly

  468. nuanced

  469. reading.

  470. There's

  471. not a

  472. lot of

  473. examples

  474. of that

  475. way of

  476. reading it

  477. and it's

  478. probably

  479. not what

  480. Paul had

  481. in mind.

  482. This idea

  483. that as a

  484. male leader

  485. in the

  486. church I

  487. could exercise

  488. my God

  489. given

  490. authority

  491. authority

  492. and give

  493. a woman

  494. that same

  495. level of

  496. authority

  497. in the

  498. church.

  499. It seems

  500. unlikely that

  501. Paul intended

  502. this or

  503. that he

  504. had this

  505. kind of

  506. an application

  507. in mind.

  508. And so

  509. probably the

  510. better translation

  511. which some

  512. have stayed

  513. true to is

  514. I do not

  515. permit a

  516. woman to

  517. have authority

  518. over a

  519. man rather

  520. than take

  521. or assume

  522. or usurp

  523. authority.

  524. The third

  525. objection

  526. perhaps this

  527. was just

  528. for the

  529. church in

  530. Ephesus

  531. but Paul

  532. has framed

  533. all of

  534. these

  535. instructions

  536. towards

  537. men and

  538. women

  539. with a

  540. location.

  541. If we

  542. look back

  543. up to

  544. verse 8

  545. he says

  546. therefore I

  547. want the

  548. men

  549. everywhere

  550. to pray

  551. likewise

  552. that the

  553. women should

  554. dress modestly

  555. in verse 9

  556. and then as

  557. it just flows

  558. right down

  559. into this

  560. instruction

  561. in verse 11

  562. the woman

  563. should learn

  564. in quietness

  565. in full

  566. submission.

  567. So the

  568. flow

  569. the context

  570. suggests that

  571. this instruction

  572. is not just

  573. for Ephesus

  574. but for all

  575. the churches

  576. everywhere.

  577. And the

  578. final objection

  579. that we'll

  580. look at this

  581. morning of

  582. course there's

  583. many more

  584. this I would

  585. say is probably

  586. the most

  587. important one

  588. this is the

  589. most common

  590. one

  591. that this

  592. only applied

  593. to the

  594. church in

  595. the first

  596. century.

  597. Perhaps this

  598. was only for

  599. churches in

  600. the first

  601. century because

  602. of the

  603. generally

  604. accepted

  605. societal norms

  606. for women

  607. back then.

  608. They had a

  609. certain view

  610. of women

  611. back then

  612. and Paul

  613. wanted them

  614. to do

  615. right by

  616. the culture

  617. of the day

  618. in their

  619. churches.

  620. And so

  621. they'll say

  622. things like

  623. just like

  624. Paul didn't

  625. promote the

  626. abolition

  627. of slavery

  628. so neither

  629. did he

  630. promote the

  631. emancipation

  632. of women.

  633. Well that's a

  634. logical argument

  635. that's a

  636. cohesive

  637. argument

  638. and it

  639. feels like

  640. it's going

  641. to get us

  642. where we

  643. are in our

  644. culture today

  645. but there's

  646. one massive

  647. glaring problem

  648. with it.

  649. Look at the

  650. reason that

  651. Paul gives

  652. for why these

  653. gender roles

  654. should be

  655. maintained

  656. in the

  657. church.

  658. A woman

  659. should learn

  660. in quietness

  661. and full

  662. submission.

  663. I do not

  664. permit a

  665. woman to

  666. teach or

  667. to assume

  668. authority

  669. over a

  670. man.

  671. She must

  672. be quiet

  673. for or

  674. because Adam

  675. was formed

  676. first then

  677. Eve.

  678. The reason

  679. it should be

  680. this way

  681. says Paul

  682. goes all

  683. the way

  684. back to

  685. creation.

  686. It's not

  687. a thing

  688. driven by

  689. the culture

  690. of the day.

  691. It's a

  692. thing rooted

  693. in how

  694. God

  695. originally

  696. made and

  697. ordered things

  698. at the

  699. very beginning.

  700. Adam

  701. was formed

  702. first and

  703. then Eve.

  704. So Paul

  705. is saying

  706. that we

  707. should do

  708. it like

  709. this in

  710. the church

  711. because that

  712. reflects what

  713. God originally

  714. designed even

  715. before sin

  716. entered the

  717. world when

  718. everything was

  719. good,

  720. when everything

  721. was perfect.

  722. God

  723. was

  724. in other

  725. words,

  726. male authority

  727. in the church

  728. didn't come

  729. about because

  730. of sin

  731. or because

  732. of the

  733. corruption

  734. of humanity.

  735. It was

  736. part of the

  737. good,

  738. beautiful

  739. design and

  740. intention of

  741. God right

  742. from the

  743. start.

  744. Now,

  745. there's a

  746. whole context

  747. to this that

  748. comes from

  749. other passages

  750. in the Bible

  751. which we have

  752. to consider at

  753. the same

  754. time.

  755. From ancient

  756. times until

  757. this time when

  758. the New Testament

  759. was written,

  760. there was this

  761. general understanding

  762. that this is the

  763. way it should be

  764. in the family

  765. and in marriage.

  766. We see it in

  767. Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2:18

  768. verse 18.

  769. Before sin

  770. entered the

  771. world,

  772. God said,

  773. it's not good

  774. for the man

  775. to be alone.

  776. I will make a

  777. helper suitable

  778. for him.

  779. Already,

  780. we're seeing

  781. the role of

  782. women in

  783. relation to

  784. men.

  785. being defined.

  786. She was not

  787. created to be

  788. an independent

  789. head of her

  790. own household,

  791. but in the

  792. context of the

  793. first family,

  794. she would be

  795. a helper to

  796. him,

  797. which implies

  798. that his

  799. leadership would

  800. set the

  801. family direction.

  802. Then not

  803. long after,

  804. when Adam

  805. and Eve

  806. disobeyed

  807. God in

  808. the garden,

  809. who did

  810. God call

  811. out to

  812. first and

  813. hold ultimately

  814. responsible?

  815. It was

  816. Adam,

  817. the man.

  818. All through

  819. the Old

  820. Testament,

  821. while there

  822. are the

  823. effects of

  824. sin on

  825. this

  826. relationship

  827. between men

  828. and women,

  829. I mean,

  830. for example,

  831. Abraham was

  832. guilty of

  833. throwing his

  834. wife under

  835. the bus

  836. in his

  837. sojournings

  838. through foreign

  839. territory,

  840. treated her

  841. despicably,

  842. yet there is

  843. still this

  844. general

  845. understanding

  846. that this

  847. is how

  848. God made

  849. it to be.

  850. The man

  851. is the

  852. head of

  853. the household

  854. and the

  855. family,

  856. and the

  857. wife is

  858. under

  859. his

  860. authority.

  861. The

  862. genealogies

  863. in the

  864. Bible are

  865. all traced

  866. primarily

  867. through the

  868. men.

  869. Children

  870. with similar

  871. names were

  872. differentiated by

  873. the names

  874. of their

  875. fathers.

  876. God

  877. assigned

  878. inheritances

  879. in the

  880. promised land

  881. to Jacob's

  882. sons,

  883. and inheritances

  884. were generally

  885. passed down

  886. from fathers

  887. to sons.

  888. And again,

  889. this doesn't

  890. mean that

  891. women are

  892. any less

  893. important to

  894. God.

  895. It simply

  896. reflects that

  897. God assigned

  898. a different

  899. role to

  900. men and

  901. women when

  902. it comes to

  903. the family.

  904. Now, if all

  905. this was only

  906. intended for

  907. the people of

  908. Israel, it

  909. would surely

  910. have been

  911. stated in

  912. New Testament

  913. times when

  914. God opened

  915. his way of

  916. salvation to

  917. all people

  918. that it's

  919. now changing.

  920. And yet we

  921. read Jesus

  922. speaking through

  923. his apostles

  924. and saying

  925. things like

  926. this.

  927. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 3:1–7

  928. chapter 3

  929. verses 1

  930. to 7

  931. to 6.

  932. Wives, in

  933. the same way,

  934. submit yourselves

  935. to your own

  936. husbands, so

  937. that if any

  938. of them do

  939. not believe

  940. the word,

  941. they may be

  942. won over

  943. without words

  944. by the

  945. behavior of

  946. their wives

  947. when they

  948. see the

  949. purity and

  950. reverence of

  951. your lives.

  952. Your beauty

  953. should not

  954. come from

  955. outward

  956. adornment

  957. such as

  958. elaborate

  959. hairstyles

  960. and the

  961. wearing of

  962. gold jewelry,

  963. or fine

  964. clothes.

  965. Rather, it

  966. should be

  967. that of

  968. your inner

  969. self, the

  970. unfading

  971. beauty of

  972. a gentle

  973. and quiet

  974. spirit, which

  975. is of great

  976. worth in

  977. God's sight.

  978. For this is

  979. the way the

  980. holy women

  981. of the past

  982. who put

  983. their hope

  984. in God

  985. used to

  986. adorn

  987. themselves.

  988. God's

  989. love.

  990. They submitted

  991. themselves to

  992. their own

  993. husbands, like

  994. Sarah, who

  995. obeyed Abraham

  996. and called

  997. him her

  998. lord.

  999. You are

  1000. her daughters

  1001. if you do

  1002. what is

  1003. right and

  1004. do not

  1005. give way

  1006. to fear.

  1007. So even

  1008. though Abraham

  1009. mistreated

  1010. Sarah on

  1011. at least two

  1012. occasions and

  1013. failed to, and

  1014. Abraham failed

  1015. to trust God

  1016. to protect

  1017. her, Sarah

  1018. is commended

  1019. for obeying

  1020. him, and

  1021. obeying implies

  1022. authority.

  1023. The word

  1024. submit and

  1025. submission imply

  1026. authority,

  1027. headship.

  1028. Peter in the

  1029. first century is

  1030. saying, yes,

  1031. that's the way

  1032. for wives

  1033. today that is

  1034. good and right.

  1035. Sarah is an

  1036. example of that.

  1037. Faith-filled

  1038. submission to

  1039. husbands, a

  1040. submissive spirit

  1041. that recognizes

  1042. that your husband

  1043. is the one that

  1044. God has put

  1045. in charge.

  1046. Notice also

  1047. though that this

  1048. instruction comes

  1049. with a very

  1050. serious warning

  1051. to husbands.

  1052. Husbands, in

  1053. the same way, be

  1054. considerate as

  1055. you live with

  1056. your wives, and

  1057. treat them with

  1058. respect as the

  1059. weaker partner, and

  1060. as heirs with

  1061. you of the

  1062. gracious gift of

  1063. life, so that

  1064. nothing will

  1065. hinder your

  1066. prayers.

  1067. So men don't

  1068. get a free

  1069. pass.

  1070. They ought to

  1071. treat their

  1072. wives with

  1073. respect, says

  1074. Peter.

  1075. They ought

  1076. never to

  1077. use their

  1078. strength to

  1079. dominate.

  1080. They are to

  1081. recognize that

  1082. women, their

  1083. wives, are

  1084. equally heirs of

  1085. the gracious gift

  1086. of life that

  1087. comes through

  1088. Christ Jesus.

  1089. In Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  1090. chapter 5, Paul

  1091. says, do not

  1092. get drunk on

  1093. wine, which

  1094. leads to

  1095. debauchery.

  1096. Instead, be

  1097. filled with the

  1098. Spirit.

  1099. And then he

  1100. lists off a

  1101. whole bunch of

  1102. things that the

  1103. Spirit will

  1104. lead us to

  1105. do when we

  1106. are filled

  1107. with the

  1108. Spirit.

  1109. Things like

  1110. speaking to

  1111. one another

  1112. with psalms,

  1113. hymns, and

  1114. songs from

  1115. the Spirit,

  1116. singing and

  1117. making music

  1118. from our

  1119. hearts to

  1120. the Lord,

  1121. giving thanks

  1122. to God the

  1123. Father for

  1124. everything, and

  1125. verse 21,

  1126. submitting to

  1127. one another out

  1128. of reverence for

  1129. Christ.

  1130. Wives to

  1131. husbands, a

  1132. little further

  1133. down, children

  1134. to their

  1135. parents, a

  1136. little further

  1137. down, slaves to

  1138. their masters.

  1139. But let's

  1140. look at these

  1141. instructions that

  1142. Paul gives to

  1143. the wives

  1144. specifically.

  1145. He says,

  1146. submit to one

  1147. another out of

  1148. reverence for

  1149. Christ.

  1150. Wives, submit

  1151. yourselves to

  1152. your own husbands

  1153. as you do to

  1154. the Lord.

  1155. For the husband

  1156. is the head of

  1157. the wife, as

  1158. Christ is the

  1159. head of the

  1160. church, his

  1161. body, of

  1162. which he is

  1163. the Savior.

  1164. Now as the

  1165. church submits

  1166. to Christ, so

  1167. also wives should

  1168. submit to their

  1169. husbands.

  1170. in everything.

  1171. Now there are

  1172. equally serious

  1173. instructions given

  1174. to the husbands

  1175. as well about

  1176. how they must

  1177. love their

  1178. wives in this

  1179. passage, just

  1180. as Jesus Christ

  1181. loved the

  1182. church.

  1183. With a

  1184. self-sacrificing

  1185. love, seeking

  1186. her benefit, but

  1187. it's difficult to

  1188. get around these

  1189. words and the

  1190. clear meaning of

  1191. them.

  1192. The husband is

  1193. the head of the

  1194. wife as Christ

  1195. is the head of

  1196. the church.

  1197. So this is an

  1198. important context

  1199. to Paul's

  1200. instruction about

  1201. women in 1

  1202. Timothy.

  1203. God has

  1204. designed and

  1205. intended from

  1206. creation that

  1207. this is how a

  1208. family should be.

  1209. Men and women

  1210. are created

  1211. equally in the

  1212. image of God.

  1213. they're granted

  1214. an equal

  1215. inheritance in

  1216. salvation, but

  1217. they have been

  1218. given different

  1219. roles to play in

  1220. the family.

  1221. And this is

  1222. good.

  1223. Everything God

  1224. made is good,

  1225. said Paul in

  1226. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  1227. chapter 4.

  1228. God's intention

  1229. was that the

  1230. husband would

  1231. bear the

  1232. burden of

  1233. leadership for

  1234. his wife and

  1235. children.

  1236. And it

  1237. wasn't supposed

  1238. to be a

  1239. sinful, selfish

  1240. domineering of

  1241. his wife, but

  1242. a humble,

  1243. self-sacrificing,

  1244. serving, kind,

  1245. respectful,

  1246. considerate,

  1247. loving kind of

  1248. leadership.

  1249. The kind of

  1250. leadership that it

1251. would be a joy to

  1252. submit to and

  1253. follow.

  1254. According to

  1255. Paul here in the

  1256. rest of this

  1257. passage in

  1258. Ephesians,

  1259. husband and

  1260. wife in their

  1261. unique God-given

  1262. roles are meant

  1263. to picture and

  1264. point to the

  1265. wonderful love of

  1266. Jesus for his

  1267. bride, his

  1268. church, and her

  1269. joyful submission to

  1270. him in all

  1271. things.

  1272. That's one of the

  1273. ways God intended

  1274. for marriage and

  1275. family to bring

  1276. glory to God.

  1277. I mean, think about

  1278. Jesus and his

  1279. relationship with

  1280. his church.

  1281. How did he treat

  1282. his disciples?

  1283. Did he say, get

  1284. down there and

  1285. wash my feet?

  1286. No.

  1287. He washed their

  1288. feet.

  1289. He served them.

  1290. He gave his life

  1291. for them.

1292. And so this is the

  1293. pattern that we are

  1294. to follow in the

  1295. church and in the

  1296. home.

  1297. Now, it doesn't

  1298. mean we won't

  1299. fail and struggle

  1300. to live this,

  1301. or that sin

  1302. won't cause

  1303. problems, but

  1304. this is how

  1305. Christ wants us

  1306. to live when it

  1307. comes to the

  1308. family.

  1309. And now here in

  1310. 1 Timothy 2,

    1 Timothy 2:11–15

  1311. verse 11 to 15,

  1312. Paul's basically

  1313. saying the will

  1314. of Christ is the

  1315. same in the

  1316. church.

  1317. The church is to

  1318. be done like the

  1319. family.

1320. Just as the man is

  1321. the head of the

  1322. wife in the home,

  1323. so he must also

  1324. have the authority

  1325. and take the lead

  1326. in the church.

  1327. And the women

  1328. must submit to

  1329. that leadership.

  1330. Remember Paul's

  1331. stated purpose for

  1332. writing this letter.

  1333. 1 Timothy 3,

    1 Timothy 3:14

  1334. verse 14 and 15.

  1335. I'm writing you

  1336. these instructions

  1337. so that you will

  1338. know how people

  1339. ought to conduct

  1340. themselves in God's

  1341. household, which is

  1342. the church of the

  1343. living God.

  1344. We are to operate

  1345. just like a family,

  1346. family, which

  1347. means that the

  1348. men who lead

  1349. might be thought

  1350. of as the

  1351. spiritual dads

  1352. in the family.

  1353. And there's a

  1354. wonderful safeguard

  1355. here because not

  1356. just any man is

  1357. permitted to teach

  1358. and to have

  1359. authority in the

  1360. church.

  1361. As we'll see

  1362. next week, Paul

  1363. gives specific

  1364. requirements for

  1365. men to lead in

  1366. the church, to

  1367. have authority.

  1368. And most of

  1369. them are character

  1370. kinds of things.

  1371. Christ-like

  1372. character, and

  1373. that will protect

  1374. the people in

  1375. the church from

  1376. being governed by

  1377. those who are

  1378. domineering or

  1379. abusive.

  1380. How do we apply

  1381. all this?

  1382. How should the

  1383. rubber hit the

  1384. road with this in

  1385. our church?

  1386. First of all, is

  1387. Paul saying that

  1388. women should be

  1389. silent in the

  1390. church?

  1391. Some of your

  1392. translations will

  1393. have the word

  1394. silent.

  1395. There are a few

  1396. scholars that

  1397. think that that's

  1398. what it means, but

  1399. they would never

  1400. say in the whole

  1401. gathering of the

  1402. church, women can't

  1403. even open their

  1404. mouths.

  1405. They really will

  1406. mostly always say

  1407. that it's during the

  1408. regular teaching

  1409. moments of the

  1410. church, like during

  1411. the sermon.

  1412. The majority of

  1413. interpreters, however,

  1414. take the word

  1415. silence to refer to

  1416. the spirit of their

  1417. participation because

  1418. it also is used

  1419. that way as well,

  1420. quietness.

  1421. And I think that's

  1422. what makes the most

  1423. sense here.

  1424. just look back up

  1425. the page to

  1426. verse 2.

  1427. We're to pray for

  1428. kings and all those

  1429. in authority that we

  1430. may live peaceful and

  1431. quiet lives.

  1432. That's the same word.

  1433. In all godliness and

  1434. holiness.

  1435. It doesn't mean silent

  1436. lives.

  1437. It means quiet, in

  1438. tone, respectful,

  1439. gentle, as opposed

  1440. to loud, interrupting,

  1441. obnoxious, arrogant.

  1442. And there's a few

  1443. other usages, just

  1444. like this, where it

  1445. doesn't mean silent,

1446. but it refers to the

  1447. spirit.

  1448. The spirit of the

  1449. learning for the

1450. women is to be a

  1451. quiet one.

  1452. Perhaps there were

  1453. some very loud,

  1454. outspoken, interrupting

  1455. women of social

  1456. standing in the

  1457. church at Ephesus who

  1458. were seeking to take

  1459. charge and have their

  1460. way.

  1461. So how does this

  1462. apply practically?

1463. I'm just going to do

  1464. this in kind of

  1465. question and answer

  1466. format.

  1467. Should women

  1468. participate in the

  1469. discussion in adult

  1470. Sunday school?

  1471. Yes.

  1472. Participating in the

  1473. discussion, sharing

  1474. your thoughts, your

  1475. observations, your

  1476. insight, that's

  1477. different than

  1478. teaching the class.

  1479. It's about the

  1480. spirit of how we

  1481. participate.

1482. Do you come to the

  1483. class to learn?

  1484. to respond to the

  1485. word of God?

1486. Or do you come to

  1487. teach and to help

  1488. others come to the

  1489. same conclusion that

  1490. you have, the way

1491. that you think is the

  1492. right way to live?

  1493. So women,

  1494. absolutely.

  1495. Participate in the

  1496. discussion, but

  1497. teaching the class and

  1498. giving leadership to

1499. the class should be for

  1500. those qualified men.

  1501. Should women

  1502. participate in the

  1503. discussion at

  1504. congregational meetings?

  1505. Yes.

  1506. In fact, good

  1507. leadership always seeks

  1508. feedback from those

  1509. who are following.

  1510. To make the best

  1511. decisions, we need to

  1512. know what the needs

  1513. are.

1514. We need to know how

  1515. people are doing, what

  1516. the situation is.

  1517. Good leadership gathers

  1518. counsel and wisdom.

  1519. And so dialogue and

  1520. discussion between a

  1521. husband and wife, between

1522. an elder and a church

  1523. member is good.

  1524. It's healthy.

1525. But the tone of that

1526. and the spirit of that

  1527. dialogue should be

  1528. respectful of the

  1529. God-ordained differences

  1530. in role.

  1531. Should women be

  1532. pastors in the church?

  1533. Well, it depends what

  1534. you mean by pastor.

1535. But if by pastor you

1536. mean one of the leading

  1537. elders who preaches and

  1538. teaches the whole

  1539. congregation, then no.

  1540. No.

  1541. This word from Christ

  1542. through Paul implies

  1543. no.

  1544. But, God has given

  1545. some women the

  1546. spiritual gift of

  1547. shepherding for the

  1548. building up of the

  1549. church.

1550. And should that be used

  1551. in the church?

  1552. I say yes.

  1553. But these instructions

  1554. given to Timothy would

1555. limit the use of that

  1556. gift to women and

  1557. children.

  1558. Should women be elders

  1559. in the church?

  1560. According to this

  1561. passage, no.

1562. As we'll see next week,

  1563. elders are tasked with

  1564. authoritative oversight

  1565. and leadership of the

  1566. church.

1567. Not only that, but to be

1568. an elder, Paul says in

  1569. the next chapter, that

1570. you must be able to

  1571. teach.

1572. And in the context of

  1573. this letter, that's

1574. teach the truths of the

1575. faith, the word of God

  1576. to the church.

  1577. That's one of the

  1578. primary responsibilities

  1579. of an elder.

1580. And so women cannot be

  1581. elders in the church

  1582. because that would put

1583. them in a position of

  1584. authority over men and

1585. give them the role of

  1586. teaching men, which goes

  1587. completely against what

1588. Paul is saying here in

  1589. these verses.

  1590. But, let's also

  1591. remember the context of

  1592. this letter.

1593. This letter is about how

  1594. we should conduct

  1595. ourselves in the

  1596. household of God, in

  1597. the church.

  1598. And, as I just

  1599. mentioned, in the

  1600. context, the teaching

  1601. refers specifically to

  1602. the doctrines of the

  1603. church, the truths of

1604. the faith, the word of

1605. God, how to live in

  1606. response to God's word.

  1607. So, can we have

  1608. Sherry, our public

  1609. health nurse, she's

  1610. shaking her head, teach

  1611. a one-day course on

  1612. CPR on a Saturday

  1613. morning?

  1614. Yes.

  1615. There's no problem

  1616. with that.

1617. Can we have a sister in

1618. Christ come up here to

  1619. the front and share

  1620. personal testimony?

  1621. Absolutely.

1622. That's the story of what

1623. Christ has done in her

  1624. life.

  1625. That's not teaching the

  1626. church like the elders

  1627. are tasked with doing.

  1628. Furthermore, many women

1629. have been gifted by God

  1630. to teach.

1631. And these gifts should be

1632. used in the church for

1633. the building up of the

  1634. other women and the

  1635. children.

1636. In fact, when we get to

  1637. Paul's letter to Titus,

1638. we're going to see him

  1639. command it.

  1640. Older women, teach the

  1641. younger women.

1642. So, women can lead, they

  1643. can teach women's groups,

  1644. women's Bible studies,

  1645. women's Sunday school

  1646. classes, alive.

  1647. If you're a woman and

1648. you have the gift to

1649. teach, do not bury it in

  1650. the sand.

1651. It is to be used.

1652. Just not to teach the

  1653. men.

1654. Should women be on the

  1655. board of our church?

  1656. According to our current

  1657. church constitution, we're

1658. to have a board and the

  1659. board shall be the

  1660. business administrators of

1661. the church and the board

1662. is to be made up of the

  1663. pastor, elders, church

  1664. clerk, and church

  1665. treasurer.

  1666. Now, we've already said

1667. that women should not be

  1668. pastors or elders, but

1669. can they be the church

  1670. clerk or the church

  1671. treasurer?

  1672. However, the problem

1673. with this is that if we

  1674. elect women to these

  1675. roles, it puts them

  1676. functionally in the

  1677. authoritative decision

  1678. making seats around the

  1679. table for the whole

  1680. church.

1681. They would then come to

  1682. the monthly meetings.

  1683. They would not only

  1684. participate in the

  1685. discussion with the

  1686. elders and pastor, but

  1687. also vote on motions.

  1688. Whether it was intended

1689. or not, having a woman

  1690. in these positions puts

1691. them in a position of

1692. authority over men in the

  1693. church.

1694. This is why we haven't

  1695. nominated women to these

1696. positions in the past six

  1697. years.

  1698. Furthermore, next week, as

1699. we move into chapter three,

1700. we're going to see that

  1701. church governance by a

  1702. board is not biblical

  1703. anyway.

  1704. We're to be governed by a

  1705. council of elders, a

  1706. plurality of elders.

1707. And so we actually have

1708. some major work to do

1709. right here in our own

1710. church on how we are

  1711. organized on our

  1712. constitution.

  1713. constitution because our

  1714. governance is modeled

  1715. more after a secular

  1716. organization way of

  1717. operating than the

  1718. Bible.

1719. And if the word of God

1720. gives us a pattern to

  1721. follow for church

  1722. governance and we find

1723. ourselves at a step with

1724. it, we got to get in

  1725. step with it.

  1726. We need to change.

1727. Should women be deacons or

  1728. ministry coordinators in

  1729. the church?

1730. We're going to dig into

1731. this a little more in the

  1732. weeks ahead.

  1733. Paul talks about deacons

  1734. in chapter three.

1735. But for today, when it

  1736. comes to leadership in

  1737. the church, there's a

  1738. difference between having

  1739. authority and oversight in

1740. the church like the elders

  1741. are supposed to and

  1742. coordinating a mixed group

1743. of volunteers in set up

  1744. for a potluck or in a

  1745. renovation project or in

1746. an outreach event or a

  1747. financial review committee.

1748. I sometimes laugh at how

  1749. legalistic people can be

  1750. about this.

  1751. I've heard people tell

  1752. me, a woman shouldn't

  1753. lead the budget committee.

  1754. That's big decision

1755. making and should only be

  1756. done by the elders.

1757. But then you ask that

1758. person, so how do you

  1759. manage your finances at

  1760. home?

1761. Oh, my wife looks after

  1762. all that stuff.

  1763. Okay.

1764. So she can be trusted

  1765. with the family finances

  1766. but not the church

  1767. family's finances?

  1768. How does that work?

1769. I say go read Proverbs

1770. 31 and look at all that

  1771. the wife of noble

  1772. character has been

  1773. entrusted with in the

1774. family and in the home

1775. and then let's talk about

  1776. whether women can be

  1777. ministry coordinators or

  1778. deacons or treasurers or

  1779. whatever.

1780. Now, women, I know the

1781. tendency is to hear in all

  1782. this a list of don'ts.

1783. But I want to encourage

  1784. you.

1785. God did not give these

  1786. instructions to take

  1787. something away from you

  1788. that's rightfully yours.

  1789. The different roles he

1790. has given us really are

  1791. good.

1792. And so I would encourage

1793. you to see this not as a

  1794. list of don'ts but as a

1795. list of don't have tos.

  1796. A list of things you don't

  1797. need to worry about.

1798. A list of things where God

1799. himself blesses you to say

  1800. that's not my job.

1801. This is where all of you

1802. women get to breathe a

  1803. sigh of relief.

  1804. You're off the hook.

  1805. You're free of the

  1806. responsibility of church

  1807. leadership.

1808. And it is a heavy

  1809. responsibility.

1810. Those who lead in the

  1811. church and teach the

  1812. congregation will have to

  1813. answer to God for

  1814. everything that they

1815. decide and what they have

  1816. taught.

  1817. And truth be told,

1818. sometimes we men who have

  1819. been saddled with that

  1820. burden wish we could

  1821. sometimes just be followers

  1822. followers and just have

1823. someone else lead the way

  1824. and submit to that

  1825. person.

1826. So women, you are off the

  1827. hook.

1828. But men, you are on the

  1829. hook.

  1830. This serious responsibility

1831. of teaching in the church

1832. and having authority in the

  1833. church falls to you.

1834. Which means that you men

1835. must strive to be men of

  1836. character.

1837. You must strive to live

  1838. exemplary lives worth

  1839. following.

1840. You must strive to learn

1841. the truths of the faith

1842. because it falls to you,

  1843. this burden.

  1844. This sacred responsibility.

1845. That's why we started doing

  1846. LEAD twice a month.

  1847. Because we cannot neglect

  1848. this.

1849. In the absence of good male

  1850. leadership in the church,

  1851. the family falls apart.

  1852. It scatters.

1853. In the absence of good,

  1854. solid biblical teaching,

1855. the health and the life of

  1856. the church slips away.

1857. Men, women have been given

  1858. the instruction in God's

1859. word to submit to our

  1860. leadership and teaching.

1861. And so we better be the

  1862. kind of leaders and

1863. teachers that make it a

1864. joy for them to follow.

1865. May the Lord not find us men

1866. sleeping at the wheel or

1867. checked out and living for

  1868. our own comforts and

  1869. pleasures abdicating our

  1870. responsibility.

1871. So yes, there is a

  1872. difference between the role

1873. of men and women in the

  1874. church.

  1875. It's rooted in creation.

  1876. It's good.

1877. And when we live out our

  1878. God-ordained roles as men

1879. and women in the home and in

1880. the church, it brings glory to

1881. God and it adorns the

  1882. gospel.

  1883. Let's pray.

1884. Father in heaven, I pray that

1885. you would help us with these

  1886. challenging words.

1887. We see many Christians and

  1888. churches adrift.

1889. They're not tethered to your

  1890. word anymore.

1891. And we so want to be

  1892. faithful.

1893. I pray that you would give

1894. us the courage and the

1895. wisdom to know how to live

1896. in response to these words.

1897. I pray that you would give

1898. us the humility and the

  1899. graciousness towards one

  1900. another.

1901. And I pray that Jesus Christ

1902. really would be exalted and

  1903. glorified through this.

1904. Though we may not understand or

1905. see how today, but we trust at

1906. the end of the story, we will.

1907. To your name be the glory.

  1908. Amen.
