  1. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to 1 Timothy.

  2. We're continuing our way through the book.

  3. And with the exception of the last verse of chapter 3,

  4. we have now finished the first four chapters of the book,

  5. so we've only got two left.

  6. And today we're going to pick up Paul's letter here in chapter 5.

  7. 1 Timothy chapter 5.

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  8. Let me read our passage for us this morning.

  9. Beginning in verse 1.

  10. Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father.

  11. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers,

  12. and younger women as sisters with absolute purity.

  13. Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need.

  14. But if a widow has children or grandchildren,

  15. these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice

  16. by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents.

  17. For this is pleasing to God.

  18. The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God

  19. and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help.

  20. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.

  21. Give the people these instructions so that no one may be open to blame.

  22. Anyone who does not provide for their relatives and especially for their own household

  23. has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

  24. No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over 60,

  25. has been faithful to her husband, and is well known for her good deeds,

  26. such as bringing up children, showing hospitality,

  27. washing the feet of the Lord's people,

  28. helping those in trouble,

  29. and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds.

  30. As for younger widows,

  31. do not put them on such a list,

  32. for when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ,

  33. they want to marry.

  34. Thus they bring judgment on themselves

  35. because they have broken their first pledge.

  36. Besides,

  37. they get into the habit of being idle

  38. and going about from house to house,

  39. and not only do they become idlers,

  40. but also busybodies,

  41. who talk nonsense,

  42. saying things they ought not to.

  43. So I counsel younger widows to marry,

  44. to have children,

  45. to manage their homes,

  46. and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.

  47. Some have in fact already turned away to follow Satan.

  48. If any woman who is a believer has widows in her care,

  49. she should continue to help them

  50. and not let the church be burdened with them

  51. so that the church can help those widows

  52. who are really in need.

  53. This passage has two distinct parts.

  54. In the first part,

  55. Paul gives instructions to Timothy

  56. about how to relate to other people in the church.

  57. That's in verses 1 and 2.

  58. The second part contains instructions

  59. for how to care for widows in the church,

  60. which is verse 3 all the way down to 16.

  61. And with only a quick read-through of this passage,

  62. we may think that these words are not really that relevant to us.

  63. Unless, of course, we have a large church

  64. with a whole bunch of widows.

  65. But if we take time to really reflect

  66. over the meaning of these words,

  67. there's actually a lot here that applies to us.

  68. Let's start at the top with the first couple verses.

  69. Paul says to Timothy,

  70. Do not rebuke an older man harshly,

  71. but exhort him as if he were your father.

  72. Treat younger men as brothers,

  73. older women as mothers,

  74. and younger women as sisters

  75. with absolute purity.

  76. We all have all kinds of differences

  77. here in the church,

  78. but we have been brought together

  79. by our common faith in Jesus.

  80. But now, how are we to get along

  81. with one another?

  82. Jesus says,

  83. Treat one another as family.

  84. Now, family relationships in a fallen world

  85. are not always easy.

  86. Sometimes they fail to be what they should be.

  87. But we all know the ideal.

  88. We all have a yearning for good family relationships.

  89. We all know that friends come and go,

  90. but family will always be family.

  91. The son of your mother

  92. will always be your brother.

  93. And there's to be a special loyalty

  94. and commitment that goes with family.

  95. Treat one another here in the church

  96. as family.

  97. Like that,

  98. says Jesus.

  99. This is one of the main themes

  100. of this whole letter to Timothy.

  101. If we look back to chapter 3,

  102. Paul said,

  103. I'm writing you these instructions

  104. so that you will know

  105. how people ought to conduct themselves

  106. in God's household,

  107. which is the church of the living God.

  108. So what is the church?

  109. It is a household.

  110. A family.

  111. And so we are to treat one another

  112. as family,

  113. says Christ.

  114. We are to be like brothers and sisters

  115. to one another,

  116. mothers and fathers

  117. and sons and daughters

  118. to each other.

  119. There are at least two aspects of family

  120. that should be reflected

  121. in our relationships

  122. with each other here in the church.

  123. One is purity

  124. and the other

  125. is care for each other's needs.

  126. Look at what Paul says here in verse 2.

  127. He says,

  128. Treat younger women as sisters

  129. with absolute purity.

  130. Sometimes we may wonder

  131. how to interact.

  132. How do we conduct ourselves

  133. with the members

  134. of the opposite sex

  135. here in the church?

  136. Well, Christ makes it

  137. really simple for us.

  138. He says,

  139. Just treat them like you would

  140. a family member

  141. of the opposite sex

  142. with absolute purity.

  143. which for us men

  144. means

  145. be a good brother

  146. to the women.

  147. A good brother

  148. watches out

  149. for his sisters.

  150. A good brother

  151. uses his strength

  152. to protect his sisters.

  153. A good brother

  154. never even thinks

  155. about doing anything

  156. inappropriate

  157. with his sisters.

  158. She's your sister.

  159. A good brother

  160. longs for his sister

  161. to be loved and cherished

  162. by an honorable man.

  163. A good brother

  164. helps his sister out

  165. when she's in need

  166. of assistance.

  167. A good brother

  168. talks to his sisters

  169. and asks them

  170. how they're doing.

  171. Cares about the things

  172. going on in their lives

  173. when they're together.

  174. And I could go on,

  175. but you get the idea.

  176. And this principle

  177. of family applies

  178. in all the other ways

  179. as well.

  180. Women

  181. be good sisters

  182. to the men

  183. in the church.

  184. What does that mean?

  185. I'm not going to

  186. flesh all of these

  187. out,

  188. but I would encourage

  189. us all to reflect

  190. on these things

  191. this week.

  192. What does it mean

  193. to be a good brother

  194. to the women

  195. in the church?

  196. What does it mean

  197. to be a good sister

  198. to the men

  199. in the church?

  200. For those of us

  201. who are younger,

  202. what does it mean

  203. to treat older men

  204. in the church

  205. as you would

  206. your father?

  207. How should you

  208. treat your father?

  209. Paul tells us

  210. in this passage

  211. just one way,

  212. one example.

  213. He says,

  214. don't rebuke them

  215. harshly,

  216. but exhort them

  217. or bring up

  218. an issue with them

  219. respectfully,

  220. gently.

  221. That's just one example.

  222. How else should you

  223. treat your father?

  224. It reflects on how

  225. we should interact

  226. with the older men

  227. in the church.

  228. How should you

  229. treat your mother?

  230. Same thing

  231. towards the women.

  232. How does a good father

  233. or mother

  234. treat their children?

  235. How should we relate

  236. to all the children

  237. here in the church?

  238. Family is the pattern

  239. that God has given us.

  240. More than that,

  241. family is the spiritual reality

  242. that Jesus has brought

  243. about for us.

  244. It's not just a pattern

  245. to follow,

  246. it's who we are

  247. in Christ.

  248. We are brothers

  249. and sisters

  250. through our union

  251. with him.

  252. The church is not a club

  253. or an organization

  254. like we see in the world.

  255. It's a family.

  256. And family relationships

  257. are marked by purity.

  258. That's the first thing

  259. we aspect,

  260. we see a family.

  261. And the second one,

  262. family relationships

  263. are marked by care

  264. for one another.

  265. And not just the neighborly care,

  266. but another level

  267. of care for one another.

  268. And we're going to see

  269. that fleshed out fully

  270. in the next verses

  271. as it pertains to widows.

  272. But let's just think

  273. about this in general.

  274. Family has each other's backs.

  275. Family sacrifices

  276. in love for each other.

  277. Family stays by your side

  278. when you're in the hospital.

  279. family will not let you

  280. go hungry

  281. when times are hard.

  282. Family makes time

  283. for each other.

  284. Family cares deeply

  285. about the dignity

  286. and honor

  287. of each other.

  288. And that's how we're to be

  289. as a church

  290. in our relationships

  291. with each other.

  292. Family.

  293. Because we are

  294. the household of God.

  295. So I want to encourage

  296. us all to just reflect

  297. on this this week

  298. to ask ourselves

  299. this question.

  300. How have I been relating

  301. to the various other people

  302. in the church?

  303. Some of you are

  304. wonderful examples

  305. of this

  306. and I noticed it right away

  307. when I first moved here

  308. six years ago

  309. that this church

  310. had more of a feeling

  311. of family

  312. than any other church

  313. I had been in before.

  314. But let's not think

  315. that we've fully arrived yet.

  316. We can grow closer.

  317. We can grow stronger.

  318. We can grow healthier

  319. as a family.

  320. As a household.

  321. And so I want to invite

  322. each of you

  323. to take time this week

  324. to reflect

  325. on your own relationships

  326. with the people

  327. in the church.

  328. How have I been treating

  329. others in the church?

  330. May the Lord speak to us

  331. about that

  332. this week.

  333. Now on the topic

  334. of family

  335. what comes next

  336. in verses

  337. 3 to 16

  338. makes a lot of sense.

  339. Paul's not just

  340. trying to help

  341. Timothy solve

  342. some challenging issue

  343. that's only relevant

  344. to Ephesus

  345. with these widows.

  346. It's more than that.

  347. He's showing how

  348. this kind of

  349. familial care

  350. should happen

  351. for the neediest

  352. members

  353. of the church.

  354. For the widows.

  355. what's it like

  356. to be a widow?

  357. A widow is a woman

  358. who was married

  359. but whose husband

  360. has died

  361. and is now

  362. unmarried.

  363. And back in these days

  364. they didn't have

  365. Canada Pension Plan

  366. or old age security

  367. so an older

  368. widow

  369. might find herself

  370. in a real bind

  371. after her husband

  372. passed away.

  373. And so

  374. Paul urges

  375. Timothy

  376. to apply

  377. this principle

  378. of family care

  379. and love

  380. to those

  381. who are truly

  382. in need

  383. in the larger

  384. church family.

  385. He says

  386. give proper

  387. recognition

  388. to those widows

  389. who are really

  390. in need.

  391. Don't overlook

  392. them.

  393. Don't let them

  394. lack

  395. the basic

  396. needs

  397. or the provisions.

  398. Treat them

  399. honorably

  400. as if they

  401. were part

  402. of your

  403. family

  404. and see

  405. to it

  406. that their

  407. needs

  408. are met.

  409. And as Paul

  410. goes on

  411. we notice

  412. that there

  413. are some

  414. other important

  415. instructions

  416. that he has

  417. when it comes

  418. to this.

  419. The church

  420. is to help

  421. provide for

  422. widows

  423. who are in

  424. need

  425. but

  426. the church

  427. is not

  428. to become

  429. a sort

  430. of assisted

  431. living

  432. household

  433. where

  434. sons and

  435. daughters

  436. just drop

  437. off their

  438. parents

  439. in their

  440. elderly

  441. years

  442. for free

  443. care

  444. and then

  445. the children

  446. can go

  447. off and

  448. live their

  449. lives.

  450. In verse

  451. 4

  452. But if a

  453. widow has

  454. children or

  455. grandchildren

  456. these should

  457. learn first

  458. of all

  459. to put

  460. their religion

  461. into practice

  462. by caring

  463. for their

  464. own family

  465. and so

  466. repaying

  467. their parents

  468. and grandparents

  469. for this

  470. is pleasing

  471. to God.

  472. This is a

  473. really strong

  474. statement.

  475. Your mother

  476. father

  477. or your

  478. grandmother

  479. or your

  480. aging

  481. parents

  482. or

  483. grandparents

  484. they are

  485. your own

  486. family

  487. says Paul

  488. and you

  489. owe it

  490. to them

  491. to care

  492. for them

  493. and to

  494. provide

  495. for them

  496. if they

  497. should fall

  498. into a

  499. position

  500. of real

  501. need.

  502. So yes

  503. the church

  504. should

  505. provide

  506. for widows

  507. who are

  508. in need

  509. but that

  510. familial

  511. responsibility

  512. falls first

  513. to their

  514. own

  515. sons and

  516. daughters

  517. and not

  518. just sons

  519. and daughters

  520. but even

  521. grandchildren

  522. and the

  523. language here

  524. is so

  525. strong

  526. Paul uses

  527. that language

  528. of repayment

  529. of returning

  530. compensation

  531. which means

  532. that all

  533. of us

  534. owe our

  535. parents

  536. a great

  537. debt.

  538. They brought

  539. us into

  540. the world

  541. they carried

  542. us with

  543. them

  544. they provided

  545. for our

  546. needs when

  547. we were

  548. utterly

  549. dependent

  550. and helpless

  551. it was

  552. a huge

  553. life

  554. sacrifice

  555. of love

  556. that was

  557. given to

  558. all of us

  559. by our

  560. parents.

  561. Now I

  562. know that

  563. there's

  564. exceptions

  565. to that

  566. there are

  567. some who

  568. haven't had

  569. good parents

  570. some who

  571. have grown

  572. up in

  573. foster care

  574. or been

  575. adopted

  576. but on

  577. the general

  578. on the

  579. whole

  580. we owe

  581. our parents

  582. a great

  583. debt.

  584. Paul says

  585. that we

  586. should put

  587. our religion

  588. into practice

  589. we should

  590. put our

  591. faith

  592. into action

  593. by caring

  594. for

  595. our

  596. parents

  597. by returning

  598. to them

  599. what they

  600. gave to

  601. us

  602. for this

  603. is pleasing

  604. to God

  605. it is

  606. God's

  607. will

  608. that you

  609. look after

  610. your parents

  611. and grandparents

  612. just as they

  613. looked after

  614. you

  615. when you

  616. were dependent

  617. that's what

  618. family is

  619. about

  620. it's about

  621. commitment

  622. loyalty

  623. it's about

  624. self-sacrificial

  625. love

  626. for one

  627. another

  628. that's what

  629. your mom

  630. and dad

  631. had for

  632. you

  633. for almost

  634. two decades

  635. of your

  636. life

  637. when you

  638. were a

  639. dependent

  640. in need

  641. and so

  642. a follower

  643. of Christ

  644. ought to

  645. do the

  646. same

  647. for their

  648. mother

  649. or father

  650. who comes

  651. to that

  652. place

  653. of being

  654. dependent

  655. and in

  656. need

  657. we also

  658. notice that

  659. this instruction

  660. presumes

  661. that the

  662. children

  663. or maybe

  664. one of the

  665. grandchildren

  666. are

  667. believers

  668. he says

  669. the children

  670. or the

  671. grandchildren

  672. should learn

  673. first of all

  674. to put

  675. their religion

  676. into practice

  677. by caring

  678. for their

  679. own

  680. family

  681. and so

  682. if a widow

  683. doesn't have

  684. believing

  685. children

  686. or

  687. grandchildren

  688. and those

  689. children

  690. they do

  691. have

  692. are

  693. not

  694. willing

  695. to help

  696. them out

  697. well that's

  698. a place

  699. where a

  700. widow

  701. is truly

  702. in need

  703. that's a

  704. place where

  705. the church

  706. needs to

  707. step in

  708. and provide

  709. for them

  710. as a

  711. family

  712. ought to

  713. whether it's

  714. finances

  715. or a

  716. place to

  717. live

  718. or meals

  719. or whatever

  720. and this

  721. responsibility

  722. to care for

  723. mom in her

  724. old age

  725. is part of

  726. a larger

  727. principle

  728. that applies

  729. to family

  730. in general

  731. Paul goes

  732. on a few

  733. verses down

  734. in verse

  735. 8

  736. and he makes

  737. this

  738. another

  739. strong statement

  740. he says

  741. anyone who

  742. does not

  743. provide for

  744. their

  745. relatives

  746. and especially

  747. for their

  748. own household

  749. has denied

  750. the faith

  751. and is worse

  752. than an

  753. unbeliever

  754. so it's

  755. relevant to

  756. more than

  757. just looking

  758. after mom

  759. in her

  760. old age

  761. yes it

  762. would apply

  763. to dad

  764. too

  765. it would

  766. include

  767. for those

  768. of us

  769. who are

  770. parents

  771. providing

  772. for the

  773. needs

  774. of our

  775. children

  776. those of

  777. our own

  778. family

  779. our own

  780. household

  781. this is

  782. the

  783. responsibility

  784. of every

  785. parent

  786. to provide

  787. for the

  788. needs

  789. of our

  790. own

  791. households

  792. our own

  793. families

  794. which means

  795. that those

  796. parents who

  797. who work

  798. outside the

  799. home

  800. to put

  801. an income

  802. in the

  803. bank

  804. to provide

  805. for their

  806. families

  807. you're doing

  808. the will

  809. of God

  810. when you

  811. go to

  812. work

  813. it's

  814. the will

  815. of God

  816. that both

  817. men and

  818. women

  819. provide

  820. for our

  821. families

  822. that we

  823. look after

  824. our

  825. relatives

  826. and the

  827. warning

  828. here

  829. couldn't

  830. be any

  831. stronger

  832. he says

  833. if you

  834. fail to

  835. do this

  836. for your

  837. mother

  838. your father

  839. who's in

  840. need

  841. or for

  842. your own

  843. household

  844. you have

  845. denied

  846. the faith

  847. and are

  848. worse

  849. than an

  850. unbeliever

  851. so following

  852. Jesus

  853. and faith

  854. in Jesus

  855. it must

  856. work itself

  857. out in

  858. caring

  859. for one's

  860. own

  861. family

  862. Paul says

  863. give the

  864. people these

  865. instructions

  866. so that no

  867. one may be

  868. open to

  869. blame

  870. verse 7

  871. so how

  872. do these

  873. statements

  874. apply to

  875. you today

  876. what's your

  877. life situation

  878. that you're

  879. in right

  880. now

  881. do you

  882. have aging

  883. parents

  884. that are

  885. in need

  886. of

  887. assistance

  888. do you

  889. have

  890. children

  891. at home

  892. before we

  893. get to

  894. any talk

  895. of the

  896. church

  897. stepping

  898. in to

  899. regularly

  900. meet

  901. the

  902. basic

  903. needs

  904. of

  905. individuals

  906. we

  907. first

  908. have

  909. to

  910. own

  911. this

  912. responsibility

  913. each

  914. of us

  915. to our

  916. own

  917. families

  918. but then

  919. we can't

  920. stop there

  921. we must

  922. go on

  923. to

  924. what we

  925. already

  926. read

  927. in

  928. verse

  929. 3

  930. to

  931. giving

  932. proper

  933. recognition

  934. to those

  935. who are

  936. truly

  937. in need

  938. and much

  939. of the

  940. rest of

  941. this

  942. passage

  943. is aimed

  944. at helping

  945. the church

  946. minister to

  947. these

  948. widows

  949. well

  950. now in

  951. our

  952. church

  953. today

  954. we only

  955. have

  956. one

  957. widow

  958. so we're

  959. going to

  960. kind of

  961. zoom out

  962. a bit

  963. and take

  964. a larger

  965. principle

  966. here

  967. but in

  968. order to

  969. do that

  970. we kind

  971. of have

  972. to still

  973. understand

  974. the contours

  975. of how

  976. this applies

  977. to widows

  978. so we

  979. see several

  980. principles

  981. emerge

  982. here

  983. first

  984. we hear

  985. Paul call

  986. us to

  987. really consider

  988. the plight

  989. of the

  990. widow

  991. this in

  992. verse

  993. 5

  994. he says

  995. the widow

  996. who is

  997. really in

  998. need

  999. and left

  1000. all alone

  1001. puts her

  1002. hope

  1003. in God

  1004. and continues

  1005. night and

  1006. day to

  1007. pray and

  1008. to ask

  1009. God for

  1010. help

  1011. so Paul's

  1012. inviting us

  1013. to really

  1014. look at

  1015. and consider

  1016. what it's

  1017. like to

  1018. be a

  1019. widow

  1020. if she's

  1021. really in

  1022. need

  1023. if she's

  1024. all alone

  1025. with nobody

  1026. to help

  1027. her out

  1028. she's in

  1029. a desperate

  1030. situation

  1031. and the

  1032. picture he

  1033. paints

  1034. as a

  1035. person of

  1036. faith

  1037. in the

  1038. church

  1039. is what

  1040. we're

  1041. talking

  1042. about

  1043. she's

  1044. crying

  1045. out to

  1046. God

  1047. day and

  1048. night

  1049. asking

  1050. for help

  1051. so it's

  1052. not enough

  1053. for us

  1054. to just

  1055. ask the

  1056. question

  1057. of who's

  1058. a widow

  1059. in our

  1060. church

  1061. we have

  1062. to go

  1063. beyond

  1064. that

  1065. what is

  1066. it like

  1067. for them

  1068. to be

  1069. in that

  1070. situation

  1071. now let's

  1072. take a step

  1073. back and

  1074. consider the

  1075. larger

  1076. principle

  1077. here

  1078. who are

  1079. the needy

  1080. among us

  1081. not just

  1082. the widows

  1083. but needy

  1084. in other

  1085. ways

  1086. there's more

  1087. than one

  1088. kind of life

  1089. situation

  1090. that can

  1091. leave someone

  1092. in need

  1093. and desperate

  1094. praying

  1095. like this

  1096. praying to

  1097. God

  1098. day and

  1099. night

  1100. for help

  1101. what is it

  1102. like for

  1103. the person

  1104. among us

  1105. who has

  1106. a disability

  1107. a severe

  1108. disability

  1109. or who's

  1110. suffering with

  1111. debilitating

  1112. health issues

  1113. or chronic

  1114. pain

  1115. what's it

  1116. like for the

  1117. person whose

  1118. spouse has

  1119. badly mistreated

  1120. them

  1121. or abandoned

  1122. them

  1123. or the

  1124. person who's

  1125. been laid

  1126. off and

  1127. can't find

  1128. work

  1129. these are

  1130. not just

  1131. hypothetical

  1132. questions of

  1133. what to do

  1134. in these

  1135. situations

  1136. Paul's calling

  1137. us to really

  1138. know and

  1139. feel

  1140. what it's

  1141. like for

  1142. people in

  1143. our church

  1144. that are

  1145. in need

  1146. so that's

  1147. the first

  1148. principle here

  1149. as Christians

  1150. we are to

  1151. be deeply

  1152. sympathetic

  1153. to the

  1154. situation

  1155. of the

  1156. needy

  1157. among us

  1158. but then

  1159. Paul does

  1160. something

  1161. surprising

  1162. here

  1163. he lets us

  1164. know that

  1165. there's more

  1166. than one

  1167. kind of

  1168. widow

  1169. as we just

  1170. heard there's

  1171. the widow

  1172. who's really

  1173. in need

  1174. but then in

  1175. verse 6

  1176. there is

  1177. he says

  1178. but the

  1179. widow who

  1180. lives for

  1181. pleasure is

  1182. dead even

  1183. while she

  1184. lives

  1185. down in

  1186. verse 11

  1187. he goes

  1188. on and

  1189. says as

  1190. for younger

  1191. widows

  1192. do not

  1193. put them

  1194. on such

  1195. a list

  1196. for when

  1197. their sensual

  1198. desires overcome

  1199. their dedication

  1200. to Christ

  1201. they want

  1202. to marry

  1203. thus they

  1204. bring judgment

  1205. on themselves

  1206. because they

  1207. have broken

  1208. their first

  1209. pledge

  1210. besides

  1211. they get

  1212. into the

  1213. habit of

  1214. being idle

  1215. and going

  1216. about from

  1217. house to

  1218. house

  1219. and not

  1220. only do

  1221. they become

  1222. idlers

  1223. but also

  1224. busybodies

  1225. who talk

  1226. nonsense

  1227. saying things

  1228. they ought

  1229. not to

  1230. so I

  1231. counsel younger

  1232. widows

  1233. to marry

  1234. to have

  1235. children

  1236. to manage

  1237. their homes

  1238. and to give

  1239. the enemy

  1240. no opportunity

  1241. for slander

  1242. some have

  1243. in fact

  1244. already

  1245. turned away

  1246. to follow

  1247. Satan

  1248. so Paul

  1249. distinguishes

  1250. between two

  1251. kinds of

  1252. widows

  1253. there's the

  1254. widow who

  1255. is really

  1256. in need

  1257. and to be

  1258. put on the

  1259. list for

  1260. receiving

  1261. regular help

  1262. from the

  1263. church

  1264. she must

  1265. be at

  1266. least 60

  1267. years old

  1268. Paul says

  1269. in verse

  1270. 9

  1271. but then

  1272. there are

  1273. also some

  1274. widows who

  1275. are given

  1276. to pleasure

  1277. sensuality

  1278. gossip

  1279. and who

  1280. with regular

  1281. financial

  1282. support

  1283. from the

  1284. church

  1285. would be

  1286. lazy

  1287. or idle

  1288. so in

  1289. this situation

  1290. being on

  1291. regular

  1292. church

  1293. support

  1294. is enabling

  1295. their bad

  1296. behavior

  1297. so there's a

  1298. second principle

  1299. here

  1300. we are to be

  1301. deeply sympathetic

  1302. to the situation

  1303. of the needy

  1304. among us

  1305. but we are to

  1306. be wise

  1307. to the reality

  1308. that some

  1309. will take

  1310. advantage

  1311. of the

  1312. church

  1313. and again

  1314. we must be

  1315. careful

  1316. to apply

  1317. this

  1318. not just

  1319. to widows

  1320. but to

  1321. anyone

  1322. who seems

  1323. to be

  1324. needy

  1325. now this

  1326. doesn't mean

  1327. that we

  1328. should always

  1329. be suspicious

  1330. or tight

  1331. fisted with

  1332. the church's

  1333. money

  1334. this doesn't

  1335. mean that we

  1336. should default

  1337. to being

  1338. judgmental

  1339. rather we

  1340. are to be

  1341. wise

  1342. and discerning

  1343. careful

  1344. and prudent

  1345. as we seek

  1346. to help

  1347. the needy

  1348. among us

  1349. there's at

  1350. least two

  1351. things that

  1352. are at

  1353. stake

  1354. the first

  1355. one we

  1356. see in

  1357. verse 14

  1358. Paul

  1359. counsels the

  1360. younger widows

  1361. to marry

  1362. to have

  1363. children

  1364. and to

  1365. manage

  1366. their homes

  1367. to give

  1368. the enemy

  1369. no opportunity

  1370. for slander

  1371. so if we

  1372. as a church

  1373. end up

  1374. by our

  1375. charity

  1376. enabling

  1377. people to

  1378. live

  1379. disreputable

  1380. lives

  1381. we're giving

  1382. the devil

  1383. an opening

  1384. to slander

  1385. us

  1386. and it

  1387. hurts the

  1388. good reputation

  1389. of the

  1390. church

  1391. so the

  1392. reputation

  1393. of the

  1394. church

  1395. is at

  1396. stake

  1397. and then

  1398. in verse

  1399. 16

  1400. Paul says

  1401. if any

  1402. woman who

  1403. is a

  1404. believer

  1405. has

  1406. widows

  1407. in her

  1408. care

  1409. she should

  1410. continue

  1411. to help

  1412. them

  1413. and not

  1414. let the

  1415. church

  1416. be

  1417. burdened

  1418. with

  1419. them

  1420. so that

  1421. the church

  1422. can help

  1423. those widows

  1424. who are

  1425. really

  1426. in need

  1427. that word

  1428. burdened

  1429. reflects

  1430. what it's

  1431. like to

  1432. care for

  1433. somebody

  1434. who is

  1435. dependent

  1436. and in

  1437. need

  1438. and it's

  1439. not being

  1440. used negatively

  1441. to suggest

  1442. that those

  1443. people are

  1444. just a

  1445. burden

  1446. rather

  1447. it means

  1448. that looking

  1449. after somebody

  1450. who is

  1451. dependent

  1452. is a

  1453. heavy or

  1454. a weighty

  1455. responsibility

  1456. and so

  1457. if it's

  1458. possible

  1459. for an

  1460. individual

  1461. who has

  1462. been

  1463. caring

  1464. for several

  1465. needy

  1466. people

  1467. to continue

  1468. on with

  1469. that

  1470. that's

  1471. great

  1472. says

  1473. Paul

  1474. keep on

  1475. with that

  1476. ministry

  1477. to them

  1478. that will

  1479. in turn

  1480. alleviate

  1481. the weight

  1482. on the

  1483. church

  1484. so that

  1485. the church

  1486. can use

  1487. the resources

  1488. that they

  1489. have

  1490. to help

  1491. those who

  1492. have no

  1493. one

  1494. those who

  1495. are really

  1496. in need

  1497. so there's

  1498. two things

  1499. at stake

  1500. first

  1501. there's the

  1502. reputation

  1503. of the

  1504. church

  1505. which

  1506. really

  1507. does

  1508. reflect

  1509. on

  1510. Christ

  1511. I mean

  1512. people

  1513. are

  1514. looking

  1515. at

  1516. us

  1517. they're

  1518. getting

  1519. their

  1520. ideas

  1521. about

  1522. Jesus

  1523. from

  1524. us

  1525. and

  1526. what

  1527. we

  1528. do

  1529. and

  1530. second

  1531. there's

  1532. the

  1533. resources

  1534. of the

  1535. church

  1536. which

  1537. are

  1538. at

  1539. stake

  1540. they

  1541. may

  1542. they

  1543. are

  1544. limited

  1545. they

  1546. may

  1547. be

  1548. needed

  1549. by

  1550. some

  1551. so

  1552. we

  1553. don't

  1554. want

  1555. to

  1556. find

  1557. ourselves

  1558. in

  1559. a

  1560. place

  1561. where

  1562. we're

  1563. giving

  1564. them

  1565. to

  1566. people

  1567. who

  1568. don't

  1569. need

  1570. them

  1571. but

  1572. then

  1573. the

  1574. people

  1575. who

  1576. do

  1577. need

  1578. them

  1579. are

  1580. lacking

  1581. or

  1582. going

  1583. without

  1584. so

  1585. we

  1586. must

  1587. be

  1588. wise

  1589. and

  1590. we

  1591. must

  1592. be

  1593. careful

  1594. as

  1595. we

  1596. put

  1597. things

  1598. in

  1599. place

  1600. for

  1601. the

  1602. needy

  1603. among

  1604. us

  1605. but

  1606. again

  1607. this

  1608. is

  1609. not

  1610. an

  1611. excuse

  1612. to

  1613. do

  1614. nothing

  1615. for

  1616. those

  1617. who

  1618. are

  1619. really

  1620. in

  1621. need

  1622. among

  1623. us

  1624. if

  1625. we're

  1626. so

  1627. concerned

  1628. that

  1629. we

  1630. might

  1631. enable

  1632. the

  1633. bad

  1634. behavior

  1635. of

  1636. some

  1637. that

  1638. we

  1639. close

  1640. our

  1641. eyes

  1642. and

  1643. we

  1644. close

  1645. our

  1646. hearts

  1647. to

  1648. the

  1649. desperate

  1650. need

  1651. of

  1652. others

  1653. we

  1654. fail

  1655. some

  1656. members

  1657. in

  1658. the

  1659. family

  1660. and

  1661. so

  1662. Paul

  1663. gives

  1664. a bit

  1665. of a

  1666. framework

  1667. in

  1668. verses

  1669. 9

  1670. and

  1671. 10

  1672. I'll

  1673. just

  1674. read

  1675. it

  1676. he

  1677. says

  1678. no

  1679. widow

  1680. may be

  1681. put

  1682. on the

  1683. list

  1684. of

  1685. widows

  1686. unless

  1687. she's

  1688. over

  1689. 60

  1690. has

  1691. been

  1692. faithful

  1693. to

  1694. her

  1695. husband

  1696. and

  1697. is

  1698. well

  1699. known

  1700. for

  1701. her

  1702. good

  1703. deeds

  1704. such

  1705. as

  1706. bringing

  1707. up

  1708. children

  1709. showing

  1710. hospitality

  1711. washing

  1712. the

  1713. feet

  1714. of the

  1715. Lord's

  1716. people

  1717. helping

  1718. those

  1719. in

  1720. trouble

  1721. and

  1722. devoting

  1723. herself

  1724. to

  1725. all

  1726. kinds

  1727. of

  1728. good

  1729. deeds

  1730. and

  1731. it's

  1732. maybe

  1733. implied

  1734. in

  1735. the

  1736. next

  1737. two

  1738. verses

  1739. 11

  1740. and

  1741. 12

  1742. that

  1743. here

  1744. at

  1745. this

  1746. time

  1747. they

  1748. had

  1749. the

  1750. widows

  1751. take

  1752. a

  1753. pledge

  1754. of

  1755. some

  1756. sort

  1757. to

  1758. remain

  1759. unmarried

  1760. we

  1761. don't

  1762. know

  1763. all

  1764. the

  1765. details

  1766. about

  1767. that

  1768. that's

  1769. kind

  1770. of

  1771. lost

  1772. in

  1773. history

  1774. to

  1775. us

  1776. today

  1777. there's

  1778. nothing

  1779. wrong

  1780. with

  1781. a

  1782. widow

  1783. remarrying

  1784. but

  1785. in

  1786. the

  1787. doing

  1788. so

  1789. they

  1790. were

  1791. breaking

  1792. this

  1793. pledge

  1794. that

  1795. they

  1796. had

  1797. made

  1798. and

  1799. so

  1800. to

  1801. avoid

  1802. having

  1803. widows

  1804. break

  1805. that

  1806. pledge

  1807. and

  1808. to

  1809. avoid

  1810. having

  1811. them

  1812. get

  1813. into

  1814. that

  1815. place

  1816. where

  1817. they

  1818. were

  1819. becoming

  1820. idle

  1821. busy

  1822. bodies

  1823. and

  1824. gossips

  1825. Paul

  1826. counsels

  1827. them

  1828. to

  1829. remarry

  1830. and

  1831. to

  1832. have

  1833. children

  1834. and

  1835. to

  1836. manage

  1837. their

  1838. homes

  1839. now

  1840. we

  1841. don't

  1842. have

  1843. a

  1844. list

  1845. of

  1846. widows

  1847. that

  1848. we

  1849. financially

  1850. support

  1851. as a

  1852. church

  1853. and

  1854. so

  1855. we

  1856. really

  1857. got

  1858. to

  1859. zoom

  1860. back

  1861. out

  1862. here

  1863. to

  1864. see

  1865. the

  1866. larger

  1867. principle

  1868. as we

  1869. apply

  1870. it

  1871. to

  1872. our

  1873. church

  1874. today

  1875. first

  1876. let's

  1877. talk

  1878. about

  1879. church

  1880. giving

  1881. in

  1882. general

  1883. our

  1884. regular

  1885. church

  1886. giving

  1887. I

  1888. mean

  1889. the

  1890. giving

  1891. that

  1892. our

  1893. church

  1894. does

  1895. to

  1896. others

  1897. the

  1898. financial

  1899. support

  1900. that we

  1901. have

  1902. for

  1903. families

  1904. missionaries

  1905. ministries

  1906. that

  1907. kind

  1908. of

  1909. thing

  1910. should

  1911. be

  1912. to

  1913. people

  1914. who

  1915. are

  1916. of

  1917. proven

  1918. character

  1919. people

  1920. who

  1921. have

  1922. proved

  1923. faithful

  1924. and

  1925. trustworthy

  1926. people

  1927. who

  1928. are well

  1929. known

  1930. for

  1931. their

  1932. good

  1933. deeds

  1934. who

  1935. are

  1936. truly

  1937. serving

  1938. the

  1939. Lord's

  1940. people

  1941. or

  1942. meeting

  1943. the

  1944. needs

  1945. of

  1946. those

  1947. who

  1948. are

  1949. in

  1950. trouble

  1951. because

  1952. who

  1953. we

  1954. regularly

  1955. support

  1956. financially

  1957. as a

  1958. church

  1959. says

  1960. something

  1961. about

  1962. who

  1963. we

  1964. are

  1965. as

  1966. a

  1967. church

  1968. it

  1969. says

  1970. something

  1971. about

  1972. who

  1973. Jesus

  1974. is

  1975. to

  1976. the

  1977. outsiders

  1978. looking

  1979. in

  1980. so

  1981. it's

  1982. good

  1983. for

  1984. us

  1985. to

  1986. periodically

  1987. review

  1988. the

  1989. missionaries

  1990. the

  1991. ministries

  1992. that

  1993. we are

  1994. giving

  1995. to

  1996. regularly

  1997. second

  1998. let's

  1999. talk

  2000. about

  2001. regularly

  2002. supporting

  2003. the

  2004. neediest

  2005. members

  2006. of our

  2007. church

  2008. family

  2009. currently

  2010. we don't

  2011. have a

  2012. list

  2013. of any

  2014. kind

  2015. with

  2016. anyone

  2017. on it

  2018. for this

  2019. we don't

  2020. have any

  2021. written

  2022. requirements

  2023. for what

  2024. how

  2025. you would

  2026. even

  2027. get on

  2028. such

  2029. a

  2030. list

  2031. if

  2032. we

  2033. had

  2034. one

  2035. so

  2036. we're

  2037. not

  2038. in

  2039. danger

  2040. as a

  2041. church

  2042. of

  2043. enabling

  2044. bad

  2045. behavior

  2046. like we

  2047. see

  2048. here

  2049. or of

  2050. giving

  2051. to

  2052. people

  2053. who

  2054. shouldn't

  2055. be

  2056. receiving

  2057. it

  2058. but

  2059. is it

  2060. possible

  2061. that

  2062. we're

  2063. in

  2064. danger

  2065. of

  2066. completely

  2067. overlooking

  2068. people

  2069. among

  2070. us

  2071. who

  2072. are

  2073. in

  2074. need

  2075. who

  2076. could

  2077. right

  2078. now

  2079. be

  2080. benefiting

  2081. and

  2082. right

  2083. now

  2084. are

  2085. crying

  2086. out

  2087. to

  2088. God

  2089. for

  2090. help

  2091. sometimes

  2092. we

  2093. assume

  2094. that

  2095. people

  2096. will

  2097. simply

  2098. ask

  2099. when

  2100. they

  2101. need

  2102. help

  2103. or

  2104. we

  2105. assume

  2106. that

  2107. because

  2108. a

  2109. person

  2110. has

  2111. family

  2112. in

  2113. the

  2114. church

  2115. that

  2116. they're

  2117. looked

  2118. after

  2119. but

  2120. is it

  2121. possible

  2122. that

  2123. there

  2124. are

  2125. some

  2126. people

  2127. in

  2128. our

  2129. church

  2130. whose

  2131. lives

  2132. right

  2133. now

  2134. look

  2135. like

  2136. this

  2137. they're

  2138. feeling

  2139. desperate

  2140. they're

  2141. crying

  2142. out to

  2143. God

  2144. day and

  2145. night

  2146. asking

  2147. for

  2148. help

  2149. feeling

  2150. alone

  2151. there's

  2152. a real

  2153. social

  2154. stigma

  2155. involved

  2156. with

  2157. asking

  2158. for

  2159. help

  2160. especially

  2161. financial

  2162. help

  2163. people

  2164. sometimes

  2165. feel

  2166. ashamed

  2167. or

  2168. deeply

  2169. embarrassed

  2170. to

  2171. make

  2172. their

  2173. need

  2174. known

  2175. and

  2176. as

  2177. we

  2178. can

  2179. all

  2180. see

  2181. the

  2182. prices

  2183. of

  2184. everything

  2185. are

  2186. going

  2187. up

  2188. food

  2189. clothing

  2190. housing

  2191. it's

  2192. all

  2193. increasing

  2194. very

  2195. quickly

  2196. is

  2197. every

  2198. member

  2199. of our

  2200. church

  2201. family

  2202. provided

  2203. for

  2204. is

  2205. every

  2206. member

  2207. of our

  2208. church

  2209. family

  2210. provided

  2211. for

  2212. and if

  2213. anyone

  2214. should

  2215. need

  2216. help

  2217. what's

  2218. our

  2219. plan

  2220. to

  2221. look

  2222. after

  2223. that

  2224. brother

  2225. or

  2226. sister

  2227. in

  2228. Christ

  2229. who

  2230. is

  2231. truly

  2232. in

  2233. need

  2234. I

  2235. think

  2236. probably

  2237. seems

  2238. that we

  2239. should

  2240. have

  2241. something

  2242. in

  2243. place

  2244. some

  2245. guidelines

  2246. or

  2247. policies

  2248. to

  2249. ensure

  2250. that we

  2251. are

  2252. able

  2253. to

  2254. meet

  2255. the

  2256. need

  2257. in

  2258. a

  2259. timely

  2260. manner

  2261. and

  2262. also

  2263. safeguard

  2264. the

  2265. resources

  2266. of the

  2267. church

  2268. and be

  2269. faithful

  2270. with

  2271. them

  2272. these

  2273. guidelines

  2274. in

  2275. verse

  2276. 9

  2277. work

  2278. for

  2279. widows

  2280. but

  2281. what

  2282. about

  2496. this was

  2497. a unique

  2498. time

  2499. in the

  2500. church

  2501. and

  2502. not

  2503. long

  2504. after

  2505. this

  2506. the

  2507. Jerusalem

  2508. church

  2509. was

  2510. scattered

  2511. and

  2512. what

  2513. remained

  2514. of it

  2515. went

  2516. underground

  2517. so

  2518. these

  2519. words

  2520. describe

  2521. how

  2522. it

  2523. went

  2524. then

  2525. not

  2526. necessarily

  2527. how

  2528. it

  2529. should

  2533. churches

  2534. and

  2535. all

  2536. places

  2537. for

  2538. all

  2539. time

  2540. but

  2541. there's

  2542. still

  2543. something

  2544. here

  2545. for

  2546. our

  2547. hearts

  2548. why

  2549. were

  2550. some

  2551. selling

  2552. properties

  2553. and

  2554. possessions

  2555. because

  2556. they saw

  2559. brothers

  2562. who

  2563. were

  2564. in

  2565. real

  2566. need

  2567. this

  2568. is

  2569. an

  2570. amazing

  2571. statement

  2572. God's

  2573. grace

  2574. was so

  2575. powerfully

  2576. at work

  2577. in them

  2578. all

  2579. that

  2580. there

  2581. were

  2582. no

  2583. needy

  2584. persons

  2585. among

  2586. them

  2587. God's

  2588. generosity

  2589. his

  2590. abundant

  2591. giving

  2592. nature

  2593. was so

  2594. powerfully

  2595. at work

  2596. in them

  2597. that

  2598. it

  2599. was

  2600. leading

  2601. them

  2602. to

  2603. be

  2604. generous

  2605. and

  2606. to

  2607. give

  2608. abundantly

  2609. towards

  2610. the

  2611. needs

  2612. that

  2613. they

  2614. were

  2615. seeing

  2616. in

  2617. the

  2618. church

  2619. and

  2620. I

  2621. wonder

  2622. is

  2623. this

  2624. statement

  2625. true

  2626. of

  2627. our

  2628. church

  2629. today

  2630. is

  2631. God's

  2632. grace

  2633. so

  2634. powerfully

  2635. at work

  2636. in us

  2637. all

  2638. of us

  2639. that

  2640. there

  2641. are

  2642. no

  2643. needy

  2644. persons

  2645. among

  2646. us

  2647. or

  2648. are

  2649. there

  2650. truly

  2651. needy

  2652. persons

  2653. among

  2654. us

  2655. that

  2656. we

  2657. have

  2658. been

  2659. failing

  2660. to

  2661. help

  2662. so

  2663. let's

  2664. do

  2665. some

  2666. prayer

  2667. and

  2668. let's

  2669. talk

  2670. to

  2671. one

  2672. another

  2673. let's

  2674. check

  2675. in

  2676. with

  2677. each

  2678. other

  2679. and

  2680. see

  2681. how

  2682. everyone's

  2683. doing

  2684. family

  2685. finances

  2686. I know

  2687. are

  2688. somewhat

  2689. private

  2690. matters

  2691. but

  2692. for

  2693. those

  2694. of

  2695. us

  2696. who

  2697. belong

  2698. to

  2699. Christ

  2700. we

  2701. are

  2702. family

  2703. so

  2704. we

  2705. can

  2706. have

  2707. those

  2708. kinds

  2709. of

  2710. conversations

  2711. and

  2712. talk

  2713. with

  2714. each

  2715. other

  2716. about

  2717. these

  2718. things

  2719. let's

  2720. pray

  2721. now

  2722. and

  2723. ask

  2724. the

  2725. Lord

  2726. to

  2727. be

  2728. at

  2729. work

  2730. in

  2731. us

  2732. Father

  2733. in

  2734. heaven

  2735. we

  2736. thank

  2737. you

  2738. for

  2739. this

  2740. reminder

  2741. from

  2742. your

  2743. word

  2744. about

  2745. how

  2746. we

  2747. should

  2748. be

  2749. as

  2750. a

  2751. family

  2752. in

  2753. the

  2754. church

  2755. and

  2756. I

  2757. pray

  2758. that

  2759. these

  2760. words

  2761. would

  2762. really

  2763. stir

  2764. our

  2765. hearts

  2766. and

  2767. turn

  2768. us

  2769. toward

  2770. one

  2771. another

  2772. in

  2773. love

  2774. and

  2775. concern

  2776. and

  2777. I

  2778. pray

  2779. that

  2780. this

  2781. would

  2782. be

  2783. true

  2784. I

  2785. pray

  2786. that

  2787. your

  2788. grace

  2789. would

  2790. work

  2791. so

  2792. powerfully

  2793. in

  2794. us

  2795. that

  2796. there

  2797. would

  2798. be

  2799. no

  2800. needy

  2801. person

  2802. among

  2803. us

  2804. that

  2805. everybody

  2806. in

  2807. the

  2808. family

  2809. would

  2810. be

  2811. taken

  2812. care

  2813. of

  2814. make

  2815. us

  2816. that

  2817. kind

  2818. of

  2819. a

  2820. church

  2821. Lord

  2822. so

  2823. that

  2824. we

  2825. will

  2826. bring

  2827. glory

  2828. to

  2829. your

  2830. name

  2831. we

  2832. ask

  2833. in

  2834. Jesus

  2835. name

  2836. Amen
