  1. Come to our last sermon in Paul's first letter to Timothy.

  2. So if you have your Bible, you can open it up to chapter 6 of 1 Timothy.

  3. And this morning we'll be starting in verse 17.

  4. For the past couple of weeks, we've been listening to Christ's instructions through Paul

  5. about money, greed, and contentment.

  6. And last Sunday we heard Jesus command us to flee from greed and the love of money

  7. and instead to pursue these things.

  8. Righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness.

  9. And then Paul gave this solemn charge to Timothy to keep this command

  10. and he went into a bit of a reflection of who God is

  11. and gave a word of praise to God.

  12. Well now in verse 17, Paul is going to come back for the last time to this issue of money.

  13. Let me read it for us this morning.

  14. Starting in verse 17.

  15. Paul writes,

  16. Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant,

  17. nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain,

  18. but to put their hope in God,

  19. who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

  20. Command them to do good,

  21. to be rich in good deeds,

  22. and to be generous and willing to share.

  23. In this way, they will lay up treasure for themselves

  24. as a firm foundation for the coming age

  25. so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

  26. Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care.

  27. Turn away from godless chatter

  28. and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge,

  29. which some have professed

  30. and in so doing have departed from the faith.

  31. Grace be with you all.

  32. I listened to the first few minutes of a sermon on this very passage

  33. by a pastor friend of mine from Nipawin,

  34. and he began by asking his church a question.

  35. Are you rich?

  36. I want to ask the same question.

  37. Are you rich?

  38. These first three verses in our passage today

  39. contain instructions for the rich.

  40. Are these instructions for you?

  41. Or not?

  42. Are you rich?

  43. Now the more I thought about this question this week,

  44. I realized it's not the easiest question to answer.

  45. Many of us would probably answer no.

  46. After all, there are many people who have much more than I do.

  47. But if we're comparing ourselves to others,

  48. we also need to look in the opposite direction.

  49. There are many more people in our world

  50. who have much less than I do.

  51. Probably most of you have heard some kind of a statistic

  52. at some time or another

  53. that the vast majority of North Americans

  54. are among the top 10% of people in the world

  55. when it comes to wealth.

  56. But that statistic doesn't tell the whole story either.

  57. Some places in the world

  58. are a lot more expensive to live than others.

  59. Could be because of the availability of goods and services

  60. or because of the climate.

  61. Some households in the world

  62. have more mouths to feed than others.

  63. What about the small business owner

  64. who has substantial business assets

  65. but whose profit margins are thin?

  66. What about debt?

  67. Is the person who drives a good car

  68. and has a good house

  69. but can barely afford to pay the bills

  70. and put food on the table

  71. because of the mortgage payment

  72. and the car loan payment,

  73. is that person wealthy

  74. or broke?

  75. Statistics paint one picture

  76. but human realities can paint another.

  77. Some people are poor

  78. or struggling because of bad financial decisions

  79. or greed or addictions.

  80. Others are poor

  81. because they've been taken advantage of

  82. or maybe they lost the breadwinner in their family

  83. and they can't find work.

  84. Some people are rich

  85. because they work hard.

  86. They're skilled in things

  87. that are in high demand.

  88. Others are rich

  89. because they have cheated

  90. or stolen,

  91. taken advantage of others.

  92. Now the word used here

  93. for rich in this passage

  94. means

  95. to have

  96. an abundance

  97. either of money

  98. or of earthly possessions

  99. or both.

  100. So let's take that

  101. into the way

  102. that we asked the question

  103. at the beginning.

  104. Do you

  105. have an abundance

  106. of either money

  107. or possessions

  108. or both?

  109. Another way to say it is this.

  110. Do you have

  111. more

  112. than you need?

  113. And if your answer is yes,

  114. then you are among the rich.

  115. But even here

  116. I know we can rationalize,

  117. we can reason our way

  118. out of answering yes.

  119. We might say,

  120. well I don't have

  121. an abundance of money.

  122. Seems like the money

  123. goes out

  124. as fast as it comes in

  125. or even faster.

  126. But what am I using

  127. that money for?

  128. Is it only for things

  129. that I need?

  130. Or is there

  131. a good chunk

  132. of my cash

  133. that's going towards

  134. stuff that I don't

  135. really need?

  136. To scratch the itch

  137. of discontentment

  138. as we talked about

  139. last week.

  140. Just to bring

  141. increased comfort,

  142. pleasure,

  143. entertainment.

  144. It's quite possible

  145. that you could be

  146. making over

  147. six figures

  148. a year

  149. and feel

  150. nearly broke

  151. and like the money

  152. just isn't there.

  153. Is it that you're poor?

  154. Or do you have

  155. a spending problem?

  156. Or we may rationalize

  157. in a totally different way.

  158. Perhaps you're very frugal

  159. and you only

  160. really buy something

  161. if you need it.

  162. You might say,

  163. I don't have an abundance

  164. of possessions.

  165. I'm still using

  166. my great granddad's hammer

  167. that was passed on down

  168. and you hate

  169. to spend money.

  170. I don't have much

  171. by way of possessions.

  172. But in the bank

  173. and in your investments,

  174. you've got quite

  175. an abundance.

  176. abundance.

  177. But I need all that

  178. for retirement

  179. and emergencies

  180. and old age

  181. and just in case.

  182. Now don't get me wrong.

  183. It is prudent

  184. to put aside money

  185. for those years ahead

  186. when you become

  187. unable to work

  188. or for emergencies.

  189. But some people

  190. have above

  191. and beyond that

  192. an abundance.

  193. However you came

  194. to have it,

  195. if that's you,

  196. you are among

  197. the rich.

  198. To be rich

  199. is to have more

  200. than you need.

  201. That's what abundance

  202. means.

  203. It means

  204. to abound,

  205. to have more

  206. than you require.

  207. And if that's you,

  208. Christ Jesus

  209. has something

  210. to say to you

  211. today

  212. through Paul.

  213. Paul.

  214. He says,

  215. command those

  216. who are rich

  217. in this present world

  218. not

  219. to be arrogant.

  220. Paul's referring

  221. to pride.

  222. When you have more

  223. than others

  224. around you,

  225. the conditions

  226. are ripe

  227. for pride

  228. to grow.

  229. I'm doing better

  230. than others.

  231. I've got more

  232. than others

  233. around me.

  234. Why?

  235. Well,

  236. I must be smarter.

  237. I must be wiser.

  238. I must be better

  239. at managing money

  240. than they are.

  241. Or I've worked harder.

  242. Pride can creep

  243. into our hearts

  244. and can lead us

  245. to look down

  246. on others

  247. around us

  248. who have less.

  249. Jesus says,

  250. command those

  251. who are rich

  252. not to be arrogant,

  253. not to be proud.

  254. In other words,

  255. don't pat yourself

  256. on the back

  257. and try to take

  258. all the credit

  259. for why you have

  260. more than others

  261. around you.

  262. As Paul said

  263. in his letter

  264. to the Corinthians,

  265. who makes you

  266. different from

  267. anyone else?

  268. What do you have

  269. that you did not

  270. receive?

  271. And if you did

  272. receive it,

  273. why do you boast

  274. as though you did not?

  275. Sure,

  276. you may have worked

  277. harder than others,

  278. but will you not

  279. give the credit

  280. for that strength

  281. and that ability

  282. to work

  283. to the grace of God

  284. that was with you?

  285. So if you have

  286. more than you need,

  287. do not be arrogant,

  288. do not be proud.

  289. And he goes on,

  290. command those

  291. who are rich

  292. in this present world

  293. not to be arrogant

  294. nor to put their

  295. hope in wealth,

  296. which is so uncertain.

  297. Do not put your

  298. hope in wealth.

  299. For those of you

  300. who have an abundance,

  301. do you console

  302. yourself with it?

  303. Do you look to it

  304. and lean on it

  305. and take comfort

  306. in it?

  307. Do you see that

  308. number in your

  309. savings account

  310. or in your

  311. investment accounts

  312. as your security,

  313. your safety,

  314. your provision

  315. for future days?

  316. Or do you look

  317. at the stuff

  318. that you have,

  319. your possessions

  320. that you've

  321. accumulated as

  322. your pride

  323. and your joy,

  324. the things that

  325. will ensure

  326. that you have

  327. a good life

  328. in the days ahead?

  329. Christ says,

  330. do not put

  331. your hope

  332. in wealth.

  333. Do not hope

  334. in your abundance.

  335. Why?

  336. Because riches

  337. are so uncertain.

  338. They're not

  339. dependable.

  340. They cannot be

  341. relied on

  342. to guarantee

  343. your security,

  344. your safety,

  345. your provision,

  346. your happiness

  347. for the future.

  348. God can take

  349. the earthly

  350. abundance away

  351. even faster

  352. than he gave

  353. it to us.

  354. Think back

  355. to the story

  356. of Job.

  357. Look at what

  358. happened to the

  359. children of Israel

  360. when many successive

  361. years of famine

  362. came on the land,

  363. how quickly

  364. their wealth

  365. was given up

  366. just to stay alive.

  367. they went

  368. from living

  369. like princes

  370. to slavery.

  371. Look at the

  372. splendor

  373. and the wealth

  374. of the people

  375. in Israel

  376. during the days

  377. of King Solomon.

  378. Said in those

  379. days silver

  380. was considered

  381. to be of little

  382. value because

  383. of how much

  384. of it there

  385. was in the land

  386. and yet it

  387. wasn't long

  388. before it was

  389. all gone

  390. and carried

  391. off as the

  392. spoils of war

  393. to other

  394. kingdoms.

  395. In the same

  396. way today

  397. markets

  398. can collapse.

  399. Economies

  400. can fold.

  401. Commodities

  402. that were once

  403. valued highly

  404. can become

  405. utterly worthless.

  406. Companies

  407. can go

  408. bankrupt.

  409. Natural

  410. disasters

  411. can strike

  412. and they

  413. can destroy

  414. our property

  415. and our

  416. possessions.

  417. Governmental

  418. changes

  419. can occur.

  420. The purchasing

  421. ability of the

  422. dollar

  423. can dwindle.

  424. wealth is so

  425. uncertain.

  426. So don't

  427. put your hope

  428. in your

  429. abundance

  430. in your

  431. wealth

  432. says Jesus.

  433. Instead

  434. put your

  435. hope in

  436. God.

  437. Command

  438. those who

  439. are rich

  440. in this

  441. present world

  442. not to be

  443. arrogant

  444. nor to put

  445. their hope

  446. in wealth

  447. which is so

  448. uncertain

  449. but to put

  450. their hope

  451. in God.

  452. Look to

  453. him

  454. as your

  455. security

  456. and your

  457. safety.

  458. your

  459. refuge

  460. and your

  461. rock

  462. in uncertain

  463. times.

  464. He's the

  465. one that

  466. provides what

  467. we need

  468. in future

  469. days.

  470. And the

  471. Bible is

  472. full of

  473. wonderful

  474. examples

  475. of how

  476. God

  477. provided

  478. in a

  479. perfectly

  480. timed

  481. manner

  482. for his

  483. people

  484. for the

  485. needy

  486. for the

  487. poor.

  488. Look at

  489. the life

  490. of David.

  491. One minute

  492. he was a

  493. prince.

  494. he was

  495. in the

  496. king's

  497. court.

  498. He was

  499. successful

  500. in every

  501. way.

  502. He was

  503. married to

  504. the king's

  505. daughter.

  506. And the

  507. next moment

  508. he was

  509. on the

  510. run

  511. for his

  512. life.

  513. And he

  514. was asking

  515. for bread

  516. from the

  517. priest at

  518. Nob.

  519. Did he

  520. experience

  521. scarcity?

  522. He did.

  523. But did

  524. God provide

  525. for him

  526. all along

  527. the way

  528. wherever

  529. he ran

  530. he did.

  531. And the

  532. Bible is

  533. full of

  534. stories just

  535. like his.

  536. What did

  537. David do

  538. in the midst

  539. of all

  540. that?

  541. We can

  542. read it

  543. in the

  544. Psalms.

  545. He looked

  546. to God.

  547. He put

  548. his hope

  549. in God.

  550. He cried

  551. out to

  552. the Lord

  553. and the

  554. Lord supplied

  555. his need.

  556. This is

  557. true whether

  558. we have an

  559. abundance today

  560. or not.

  561. We should

  562. do the

  563. same.

  564. Command

  565. those who

  566. are rich

  567. in this

  568. present

  569. world

  570. to put

  571. their

  572. hope

  573. in God.

  574. Is

  575. your

  576. hope

  577. in

  578. God?

  579. There's

  580. a reminder

  581. that comes

  582. with this.

  583. Put your

  584. hope in

  585. God who

  586. richly

  587. provides us

  588. with everything

  589. for our

  590. enjoyment.

  591. This is

  592. maybe the

  593. last thing

  594. we expect

  595. Paul to

  596. say in

  597. this

  598. moment.

  599. Maybe

  600. we were

  601. expecting

  602. put your

  603. hope in

  604. God who

  605. calls us

  606. all to

  607. live a

  608. life of

  609. austerity.

  610. God

  611. cares more

  612. about our

  613. holiness

  614. than our

  615. happiness.

  616. But no.

  617. Paul says

  618. speaking of

  619. riches and

  620. abundance

  621. God is

  622. the one

  623. who richly

  624. abundantly

  625. provides us

  626. with everything.

  627. He's not

  628. stingy.

  629. He doesn't

  630. give us

  631. just bare

  632. minimum

  633. slim

  634. pickings.

  635. His

  636. provision to

  637. us is

  638. abundant.

  639. His

  640. giving to

  641. us is

  642. more than

  643. we need.

  644. And it's

  645. not only

  646. so that we

  647. might give

  648. to others.

  649. We'll get

  650. to that in

  651. a minute.

  652. But His

  653. giving to us

  654. abundantly,

  655. His more

  656. than we

  657. need

  658. provision

  659. is aimed

  660. at our

  661. enjoyment.

  662. Do you

  663. hear this?

  664. Put your

  665. hope in

  666. God who

  667. richly provides

  668. us with

  669. everything for

  670. our

  671. enjoyment.

  672. God wants

  673. you to

  674. have

  675. enjoyment

  676. from the

  677. things that

  678. He richly

  679. provides you

  680. with and

  681. gives to

  682. you.

  683. He loves

  684. you.

  685. He wants

  686. you to be

  687. happy.

  688. He wants

  689. you to

  690. delight in

  691. and be

  692. satisfied with

  693. the good

  694. things that

  695. He's filled

  696. this earth

  697. with.

  698. So it's

  699. not wrong

  700. to have

  701. possessions.

  702. It's not

  703. bad to

  704. have good

  705. things,

  706. to have

  707. means.

  708. God's the

  709. one who's

  710. given those

  711. things to

  712. you.

  713. And He's

  714. done it for

  715. your

  716. enjoyment.

  717. But as

  718. we'll see

  719. now, the

  720. abundance He

  721. gives is

  722. not just

  723. for our

  724. enjoyment.

  725. It's also

  726. so that we

  727. might use

  728. it to do

  729. good and

  730. to meet

  731. the needs

  732. of others.

  733. Verse 18,

  734. command them

  735. to do

  736. good, to

  737. be rich in

  738. good deeds,

  739. and to be

  740. generous and

  741. willing to

  742. share.

  743. So God

  744. gives

  745. abundantly or

  746. richly to

  747. us, and

  748. He has two

  749. purposes in

  750. it at least.

  751. One, for our

  752. own enjoyment,

  753. and two, so

  754. that we can

  755. out of that

  756. abundance do

  757. good and

  758. give to

  759. others.

  760. And I like

  761. the way Paul,

  762. he seems to

  763. want to work

  764. the word rich

  765. into everything

  766. here.

  767. To those

  768. among you

  769. who are

  770. rich, command

  771. them to

  772. be rich in

  773. good deeds.

  774. To be rich

  775. in good deeds.

  776. It's as though

  777. Paul is

  778. saying to

  779. all of us

  780. who have an

  781. abundance,

  782. don't just

  783. ask, what

  784. can this

  785. abundance do

  786. for me?

  787. Oh, I

  788. have this

  789. much money,

  790. what can I

  791. do with it

  792. for myself?

  793. Rather ask,

  794. what good

  795. can I do

  796. for others

  797. with this

  798. abundance that

  799. God has

  800. given me?

  801. Be rich in

  802. good deeds.

  803. That's the

  804. kind of riches

  805. we should

  806. strive for.

  807. What good

  808. can I do

  809. for others

  810. with this

  811. abundance that

  812. God has

  813. given to

  814. me?

  815. And notice,

  816. he doesn't

  817. get too

  818. specific here.

  819. Command them

  820. to do good,

  821. to be rich in

  822. good deeds.

  823. it's pretty

  824. generic,

  825. pretty general.

  826. I mean,

  827. there's all

  828. kinds of

  829. good that

  830. we might

  831. do with

  832. the abundance

  833. that God

  834. has given

  835. us.

  836. Are we

  837. looking for

  838. those

  839. opportunities

  840. with

  841. intentionality?

  842. I think

  843. these words

  844. are really

  845. powerful.

  846. It's almost

  847. as if Christ

  848. is trying to

  849. flip our

  850. view of

  851. money and

  852. possessions

  853. upside down.

  854. if having

  855. money is

  856. our goal,

  857. then the

  858. question that

  859. we're going

  860. to ask is,

  861. what's the

  862. bare minimum

  863. that I must

  864. give away

  865. to be as

  866. God wants

  867. me to be?

  868. But if

  869. doing as

  870. much good as

  871. possible is

  872. the goal,

  873. being rich in

  874. good deeds,

  875. suddenly we

  876. got to ask

  877. a different

  878. question.

  879. what amount

  880. should I

  881. keep for

  882. myself and

  883. for my

  884. family,

  885. for our

  886. own needs?

  887. Command them

  888. to be rich

  889. in good

  890. deeds.

  891. Paul

  892. tacks on

  893. two more

  894. commands here.

  895. rich in

  896. good deeds

  897. and, he

  898. says, be

  899. generous.

  900. Be willing

  901. to share.

  902. There's a bit

  903. of a flow

  904. here if you

  905. read the

  906. passage in

  907. one go.

  908. And we

  909. see the

  910. same flow

  911. in other

  912. places in

  913. the New

  914. Testament.

  915. We're

  916. commanded to

  917. love as

  918. Christ has

  919. loved us.

  920. We're told

  921. to forgive

  922. one another

  923. as God

  924. has forgiven

  925. us.

  926. And here

  927. we see that

  928. we're to be

  929. generous.

  930. just as

  931. God has

  932. been generous

  933. to us.

  934. He has

  935. richly,

  936. abundantly

  937. provided for

  938. us.

  939. And we're

  940. to take

  941. now out

  942. of that

  943. abundance

  944. and be

  945. generous.

  946. Give

  947. abundantly

  948. to others.

  949. Be willing

  950. to share.

  951. would we

  952. receive the

  953. abundant

  954. rich

  955. provision of

  956. God

  957. and then

  958. be stingy

  959. and closed

  960. fisted

  961. towards

  962. others.

  963. That word

  964. generous is

  965. I mean we

  966. throw it out

  967. and we say

  968. it, we

  969. understand it.

  970. I looked

  971. it up in

  972. the dictionary

  973. because I

  974. thought you

  975. know what

  976. does it

  977. really mean?

  978. What's the

  979. way that,

  980. what's the

  981. thing that

  982. we should

  983. be thinking

  984. of here?

  985. And it

  986. said to

  987. give

  988. willingly

  989. more of

  990. something than

  991. is strictly

  992. necessary or

  993. expected.

  994. To give

  995. abundantly.

  996. To give

  997. willingly

  998. more than

  999. is strictly

  1000. necessary or

  1001. expected.

  1002. to give

  1003. abundantly.

  1004. And so we

  1005. come back to

  1006. that first

  1007. question that

  1008. I asked

  1009. earlier.

  1010. Are you

  1011. rich?

  1012. Do you

  1013. have more

  1014. than you

  1015. need?

  1016. Do you

  1017. have an

  1018. abundance?

  1019. If so,

  1020. Christ's command

  1021. to you is

  1022. this, give

  1023. willingly

  1024. and generously,

  1025. abundantly

  1026. to others.

  1027. Share out of

  1028. that abundance

  1029. with others.

  1030. Accomplish as

  1031. many good

  1032. things as

  1033. you can

  1034. without

  1035. abundance.

  1036. In this

  1037. way, they

  1038. will lay up

  1039. treasure for

  1040. themselves as

  1041. a firm

  1042. foundation for

  1043. the coming

  1044. age so

  1045. that they

  1046. may take

  1047. hold of

  1048. the life

  1049. that is

  1050. truly life.

  1051. here, these

  1052. words of

  1053. Paul hearken

  1054. back to

  1055. what Jesus

  1056. said in

  1057. the Sermon

  1058. on the

  1059. Mount.

  1060. Probably

  1061. you're

  1062. familiar with

  1063. that passage.

  1064. Matthew

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  1065. chapter 6,

  1066. 19 and

  1067. 20.

  1068. Jesus said,

  1069. do not store

  1070. up for

  1071. yourselves treasures

  1072. on earth

  1073. where moths

  1074. and vermin

  1075. destroy and

  1076. where thieves

  1077. break in and

  1078. steal.

  1079. But store up

  1080. for yourselves

  1081. treasures in

  1082. heaven where

  1083. moths and

  1084. vermin do not

  1085. destroy and

  1086. where thieves

  1087. do not break

  1088. in and steal.

  1089. Well, how do we

  1090. do that?

  1091. How do we store

  1092. up treasure in

  1093. heaven?

  1094. Paul tells us

  1095. some of the ways

  1096. that we do

  1097. that in this

  1098. passage here

  1099. in his letter

  1100. to Timothy.

  1101. By doing

  1102. good, by

  1103. giving generously,

  1104. by sharing

  1105. with others

  1106. who are in

  1107. need, in

  1108. this way

  1109. they will lay

  1110. up treasure

  1111. for themselves

  1112. as a firm

  1113. foundation for

  1114. the coming

  1115. age.

  1116. So the good

  1117. deeds that we

  1118. do in this

  1119. life really

  1120. matter in

  1121. eternity, in

  1122. the age to

  1123. come.

  1124. There's

  1125. something good

  1126. in them,

  1127. something from

  1128. them that

  1129. lasts into

  1130. eternity.

  1131. And Paul uses

  1132. this language of

  1133. a good foundation

  1134. here.

  1135. If you were

  1136. going to build

  1137. a house next

  1138. year, first

  1139. of all, wow,

  1140. that's a lot of

  1141. money.

  1142. That's a big

  1143. investment.

  1144. That's a huge

  1145. undertaking.

  1146. Would you go

  1147. cheap and

  1148. save money and

  1149. just pop it

  1150. right on the

  1151. dirt?

  1152. Probably not.

  1153. Or would you

  1154. just get some

  1155. old wood and

  1156. shove it under

  1157. there and make

  1158. a little bit of

  1159. a thing for it

  1160. to rest on?

  1161. Probably not.

  1162. Would you pay

  1163. the money and

  1164. have a proper

  1165. concrete foundation

  1166. or basement

  1167. poured?

  1168. Lord?

  1169. I think we all

  1170. understand the

  1171. importance of

  1172. having a good

  1173. foundation when it

  1174. comes to earthly

  1175. houses.

  1176. But do we know

  1177. the importance of

  1178. having a good

  1179. foundation when it

  1180. comes to our

  1181. heavenly home in

  1182. the coming age?

  1183. Do you know

  1184. that how you live

  1185. here and now

  1186. matters in the

  1187. coming age?

  1188. being generous,

  1189. being willing to

  1190. share, being

  1191. rich in good

  1192. deeds?

  1193. It's like doing

  1194. work on your

  1195. foundation for the

  1196. age to come.

  1197. I'll just read it

  1198. again.

  1199. In this way,

  1200. they will lay up

  1201. treasure for

  1202. themselves as a

  1203. firm foundation for

  1204. the coming age.

  1205. What kind of

  1206. foundation are you

  1207. laying for the

  1208. coming age?

  1209. For the life that

  1210. comes after this

  1211. one?

  1212. We got on this

  1213. subject a little

  1214. bit in Adult

  1215. Sunday School last

  1216. Sunday, actually.

  1217. There are real

  1218. rewards that God

  1219. holds in store for

  1220. those who, by

  1221. faith, do good

  1222. with what he has

  1223. entrusted to them.

  1224. There are real

  1225. rewards which God

  1226. holds in store for

  1227. those who, by

  1228. faith, do good

  1229. with what he has

  1230. entrusted to them.

  1231. Now, that doesn't

  1232. mean that we have

  1233. to do a certain

  1234. amount of good

  1235. works in order to

  1236. be saved or to

  1237. go to heaven.

  1238. We get that as

  1239. God's gift simply

  1240. by faith and by

  1241. asking God for

  1242. forgiveness and

  1243. believing in Jesus.

  1244. But there are real

  1245. rewards that God

  1246. holds in store for

  1247. those who, by faith,

  1248. persevere in doing

  1249. good works in this

  1250. present world.

1251. And I hope that we

  1252. maybe can dig into

  1253. some of that in

  1254. future, in other

  1255. passages.

  1256. These words are

  1257. intended to motivate

  1258. us.

  1259. He's saying, lay up

  1260. treasure for yourself

  1261. in heaven by doing

  1262. these things, being

  1263. generous, willing to

  1264. share.

1265. If we think back to

1266. what we heard a couple

  1267. weeks ago, the stuff

1268. that we have now, our

  1269. abundance, our

  1270. possessions, we can't

  1271. keep them.

  1272. death will someday

  1273. separate us from all

  1274. of it.

  1275. And so don't just

  1276. focus on adding to

  1277. that and having more

  1278. of that.

  1279. These things may be

  1280. treasures to us and

  1281. truly God has given

1282. them to us for our

  1283. enjoyment.

  1284. But when that day

  1285. comes, we breathe our

  1286. last.

  1287. It's not ours anymore.

  1288. And so instead, focus

  1289. on storing up for

  1290. yourself treasure in

  1291. heaven.

  1292. A treasure that you

  1293. can never lose.

  1294. That's not uncertain

  1295. or affected by the

  1296. things that go on

  1297. down here.

  1298. Focus on laying that

  1299. good foundation for

  1300. yourself in the coming

  1301. age.

  1302. page.

  1303. Paul ends this letter

1304. with a final charge and

  1305. warning to Timothy.

  1306. Timothy, guard what has

  1307. been entrusted to your

  1308. care.

  1309. Turn away from godless

  1310. chatter and the opposing

1311. ideas of what is falsely

  1312. called knowledge, which

1313. some have professed and in

  1314. so doing have departed

  1315. from the faith.

1316. He ends his letter by

  1317. charging Timothy to guard

  1318. what has been entrusted

  1319. to his care.

  1320. Quite literally, guard the

  1321. entrusted deposit.

1322. Now this is not Paul's

  1323. life savings that he's

  1324. talking about, that

  1325. Timothy's keeping for

  1326. Paul under his bed.

  1327. That would be ironic,

  1328. after what Paul just

  1329. said.

  1330. What is this entrusted

  1331. deposit?

  1332. Paul actually reveals it

1333. to us in his second

  1334. letter to Timothy.

  1335. Second Timothy chapter

  1336. one, verse 13.

  1337. Paul writes to Timothy

  1338. there, what you heard

1339. from me, keep as the

  1340. pattern of sound

  1341. teaching with faith and

  1342. love in Christ Jesus.

  1343. Guard the good deposit

  1344. that was entrusted to

  1345. you.

1346. Guard it with the help

1347. of the Holy Spirit who

  1348. lives in us.

1349. So the good deposit, the

  1350. entrusted deposit, is the

  1351. sound teaching that

  1352. Timothy heard from Paul.

  1353. It's the gospel.

1354. It's the good news about

  1355. Jesus and all the

  1356. teaching of Christ that

  1357. goes with it.

1358. That Paul is an apostle of

1359. Christ Jesus has given to

  1360. Timothy.

1361. And so here as he draws

1362. this first letter to a

  1363. close, Paul is saying,

  1364. guard that message, that

  1365. teaching, that truth.

  1366. Preserve it.

  1367. Protect it.

1368. Don't let it be lost.

1369. Don't let it slip away

  1370. into the background.

  1371. Don't let it become

1372. confused or mixed up with

1373. all these other ideas and

  1374. false teachings, these

  1375. controversial speculations

  1376. of others.

1377. Keep this truth about Jesus

1378. as the main message, the

  1379. marching orders of the

  1380. church.

  1381. knowledge.

  1382. Turn away from godless

  1383. chatter and the opposing

1384. ideas of what is falsely

  1385. called knowledge.

  1386. Another warning from Paul

  1387. concerning the ideas and

  1388. teachings of the false

  1389. teachers.

1390. Just turn away from those

  1391. things, Timothy.

1392. Stay true to the deposit

1393. from Christ which I have

  1394. given to you.

1395. That other stuff is not

  1396. knowledge.

  1397. those who profess these

  1398. ideas which oppose the

  1399. gospel and oppose the

  1400. words of Christ, they've

  1401. departed from the faith.

1402. So don't listen to them.

  1403. Turn away from them.

1404. Stay true to that good

  1405. deposit, that gospel, that

1406. truth that I have given to

  1407. you.

1408. And he closes with grace be

  1409. with you all.

  1410. A blessing.

1411. May the grace of God, may

  1412. the giving kindness of

1413. God be with you all.

1414. So for those of you who

  1415. have an abundance, what

1416. will you do with it?

1417. Are there good deeds that

1418. God has been laying on your

1419. heart that are yet undone?

1420. Are there people that you

1421. know could be in our midst or

1422. could be outside of these

1423. walls, in our community or

  1424. family?

1425. Are there people you know

1426. who do not have an abundance

1427. and are struggling just to

1428. pay the bills and keep food

  1429. on the table?

1430. But if I give away the

1431. stuff that I've received or

1432. the stuff that I've earned,

1433. how will I have enough for me

  1434. and for my family?

1435. Is your hope in the Lord?

1436. Or is it in what you have?

  1437. My grandparents often said,

1438. often say this to me, they

1439. say, you can't out give God.

1440. God owns the cattle on a

  1441. thousand hills.

  1442. He owns it all.

  1443. Everything.

1444. Will he not supply your need

1445. just as he does the birds of

1446. the air and the critters of

  1447. the field?

1448. And so I hope and pray that

1449. with what we've heard this

1450. morning, we don't go home

1451. today and say, well, that was

1452. convicting and then just do

  1453. nothing about it.

  1454. What real, tangible action

1455. will you take this Christmas

1456. with the abundance that you

  1457. have?

  1458. What real, tangible action

1459. will you take in this year

1460. ahead of us, 2024, with the

  1461. abundance that you have

  1462. received?

1463. We are stewards, managers, all

  1464. of us.

1465. And the King will come back

1466. someday and he's going to ask

1467. what we have done with what

  1468. he's entrusted to us.

1469. May we all reflect the grace and

1470. the generosity of our God

  1471. well on that day.

  1472. Let's pray.

1473. Father, we thank you for

1474. these words that you've given

  1475. to us.

1476. And yes, we admit that they are

  1477. challenging to us.

1478. They strike deeply into our

1479. hearts because we do live in a

1480. culture that is all about

  1481. greed, having more, having

  1482. better.

1483. And so I pray that you would

1484. do your work in us by your

1485. Holy Spirit, that you would

1486. teach us the way of

1487. contentment and that we truly

1488. would be willing to give

1489. generously and to share with

1490. those who are in need.

1491. Do that work in us, we pray.

1492. Make us to shine and to reflect

1493. your glory for the glory of

  1494. Christ.

  1495. Amen.

  1496. Amen.
