  1. What are your expectations and hopes going into Christmas this year?

  2. Christmas celebrations often look different for everyone.

  3. Some of you will be gathering with family and having big meals together.

  4. Some of you will be having a gift-giving time.

  5. Depending on the size of your family or gathering,

  6. that could be something that either energizes you or excites you,

  7. or maybe you're bracing yourself.

  8. Maybe that's somewhat draining to you.

  9. Good, but draining.

  10. For many, Christmas can be difficult.

  11. It can be a painful reminder of broken or strained family relationships.

  12. It can be the time when conflict happens,

  13. where arguments break out,

  14. harbored bitterness, unforgiveness,

  15. grudges can take their toll.

  16. Sometimes the children are all smiles,

  17. but there's tension amongst the adults.

  18. And then there are those who have lost precious loved ones recently.

  19. There are those who are far from home.

  20. These realities remind us that despite all the anticipation and the buildup,

  21. Christmas may not be what we expect or hope.

  22. And all of these celebration dynamics, they change from year to year.

  23. But there's one wonderful thing that stays the same,

  24. Christmas after Christmas,

  25. and year after year,

  26. a reason to rejoice,

  27. a place for our hearts to rest,

  28. and to have peace,

  29. no matter what's going on in your life.

  30. And it's the good news

  31. that Christ, the Lord,

  32. our Savior,

  33. has been born.

  34. So I want to just briefly tell you the story again.

  35. It's difficult to pick the moment that all of it started.

  36. As we've been talking about in our adult Sunday school,

  37. God has been writing a grand good news story,

  38. and it's barely possible to appreciate this moment of the story

  39. without considering all that's led up to it.

  40. Without thinking about why Jesus' coming was so desperately needed.

  41. And so do we start with the many human problems

  42. of which Jesus is the remedy?

  43. Or do we start with the many promises made long ago by the prophets?

  44. Or do we go back even further than that

  45. to before the creation of the world

  46. and God's own eternal, unfathomable purposes?

  47. Or do we just start with the first event,

  48. recorded in the New Testament?

  49. All of these are true and right places to start.

  50. And this is why Matthew begins his gospel

  51. with a genealogy going all the way back to Abraham.

  52. This is why John begins his gospel

  53. with an explanation of how Jesus,

  54. the Word,

  55. was in the beginning,

  56. even before this world was created.

  57. And this is why Luke begins his account

  58. with the first visible sign

  59. after 400 years of silence from God.

  60. All of these are true and right places to start.

  61. So this Christmas,

  62. let's start where Luke started

  63. in his account.

  64. It all started in the time of Herod,

  65. king of Judea,

  66. with a priest named Zechariah.

  67. There had been centuries prior to this

  68. with no word from God,

  69. no prophets.

  70. There were some significant moments

  71. and even signs

  72. that God was still at work

  73. to protect and to preserve his people

  74. behind the scenes,

  75. but no words,

  76. no visions,

  77. no revelations

  78. like in centuries past.

  79. And then one day,

  80. God broke the silence.

  81. It all started with a man named Zechariah

  82. who was a priest,

  83. one of the men who served the Lord

  84. at the temple in Jerusalem.

  85. And even though his wife was well past

  86. the age of childbearing,

  87. meaning that it was biologically impossible

  88. for her at this age to conceive,

  89. God sent his angel

  90. to appear to Zechariah one day

  91. during his service in the temple

  92. and God's angel told him

  93. that he would soon father a son.

  94. And this son to be born

  95. would have a very special role

  96. in God's plan.

  97. This son of Zechariah's

  98. would be used by God

  99. to bring many people

  100. back to the Lord their God

  101. and to make them ready

  102. for his appearing.

  103. Zechariah,

  104. even though he was a righteous,

  105. God-fearing man,

  106. he doubted this message

  107. from the angel

  108. and he was made mute

  109. because of it.

  110. Six months later,

  111. the same angel,

  112. Gabriel,

  113. was sent to a young woman

  114. in the town of Nazareth.

  115. And this young woman,

  116. of course,

  117. was named Mary.

  118. Mary was a relative

  119. of Zechariah's wife,

  120. Elizabeth.

  121. And Mary was engaged

  122. to a man named Joseph,

  123. a carpenter.

  124. Gabriel appeared to Mary

  125. and told her

  126. the most jaw-dropping thing

  127. a person could ever hear.

  128. I'm going to read it for you

  129. right out of the Gospel of Luke.

  130. The angel went to her

  131. and said,

  132. Greetings,

  133. you who are highly favored.

  134. The Lord is with you.

  135. Mary was greatly troubled

  136. at his words

  137. and wondered

  138. what kind of greeting

  139. this might be.

  140. But the angel said to her,

  141. Do not be afraid, Mary.

  142. You have found favor

  143. with God.

  144. You will conceive

  145. and give birth to a son

  146. and you are to call him

  147. Jesus.

  148. He will be great

  149. and will be called

  150. the Son of the Most High.

  151. The Lord God

  152. will give him the throne

  153. of his father David

  154. and he will reign

  155. over Jacob's descendants

  156. forever.

  157. His kingdom

  158. will never end.

  159. The angel then explains

  160. to Mary

  161. how it will happen.

  162. Though she has never been

  163. with Joseph

  164. or with

  165. any other man

  166. intimately,

  167. God's Holy Spirit

  168. would do a miracle

  169. inside of her

  170. causing her to conceive

  171. without a human father

  172. such that the child

  173. to be born

  174. would rightly be called

  175. the Son of God.

  176. what an astounding

  177. word

  178. to receive

  179. from God.

  180. Well, three months later,

  181. Zachariah's son

  182. was born,

  183. little baby John,

  184. and another miracle

  185. takes place.

  186. Zachariah,

  187. who had been unable

  188. to speak

  189. for nine months,

  190. regains his ability

  191. to speak

  192. and God's Spirit

  193. fills him

  194. and he begins

  195. to speak

  196. like the prophets

  197. of long ago,

  198. a message

  199. from God.

  200. And the message

  201. is that God's salvation

  202. is very near.

  203. A king is soon

  204. to be born

  205. in fulfillment

  206. of all God promised

  207. long ago

  208. through his holy prophets.

  209. A great salvation

  210. is about to appear.

  211. A forgiveness of sins

  212. is about to be known

  213. and these

  214. will be gifts

  215. of God's tender

  216. mercy.

  217. And little John,

  218. the son of Zachariah

  219. and Elizabeth,

  220. shall be a prophet

  221. of God

  222. and he will be

  223. the one

  224. to prepare the way

  225. for the Lord

  226. by giving people

  227. a knowledge

  228. of all these things

  229. that God

  230. is about to do.

  231. And as you can imagine,

  232. this caused

  233. quite a stir

  234. in the hill country

  235. of Judea

  236. and everybody

  237. was talking

  238. about old

  239. Zachariah

  240. and Elizabeth

  241. and their brand new

  242. baby boy.

  243. Meanwhile,

  244. we don't know

  245. the exact timing

  246. of things here

  247. but there was conflict.

  248. There was tension

  249. between Mary

  250. and Joseph.

  251. At some point here,

  252. Joseph finds out

  253. that Mary

  254. is pregnant

  255. and it causes

  256. great struggle

  257. in his heart.

  258. he had chosen

  259. Mary

  260. and no doubt

  261. deeply

  262. loved her

  263. but how could

  264. this be

  265. that she's

  266. pregnant?

  267. Joseph knew

  268. that he was not

  269. the father

  270. of her child

  271. and so there must

  272. have been a moment

  273. in the past little while

  274. where she had been

  275. with another man.

  276. How could she?

  277. How long

  278. had she known

  279. about this

  280. before she told him?

  281. We don't know.

  282. Did Joseph find out

  283. about this before

  284. or after Mary

  285. went to visit

  286. Elizabeth

  287. in Judea?

  288. We don't know.

  289. All we know

  290. is that Joseph's

  291. heart was torn.

  292. He was thinking

  293. very seriously

  294. about calling off

  295. his engagement

  296. altogether

  297. father.

  298. And yet he loved

  299. her enough

  300. that he didn't

  301. want to expose

  302. her to

  303. public disgrace

  304. and so he was

  305. considering a way

  306. of breaking things

  307. off with her

  308. quietly.

  309. But then that

  310. night

  311. God caused

  312. his angel

  313. to appear to

  314. Joseph

  315. in a dream

  316. and God

  317. said this

  318. to him.

  319. We read in

  320. Matthew

  321. Joseph

  322. son of David

  323. do not be afraid

  324. to take Mary

  325. home as your

  326. wife

  327. because what is

  328. conceived in her

  329. is from the

  330. Holy Spirit.

  331. She will give

  332. birth to a son

  333. and you are to

  334. give him the name

  335. Jesus

  336. because he will

  337. save his people

  338. from their

  339. sins.

  340. And so

  341. Joseph

  342. married Mary

  343. and took her

  344. home as his

  345. wife.

  346. Can you imagine

  347. what it was like

  348. for them to

  349. count down the

  350. days together

  351. until the

  352. arrival of this

  353. very special

  354. child?

  355. And as the

  356. days went by

  357. we imagine

  358. that Joseph

  359. and Mary

  360. began to

  361. make preparations

  362. in their

  363. home like

  364. all first-time

  365. parents do

  366. and the

  367. day was

  368. getting

  369. closer and

  370. closer.

  371. But then

  372. something very

  373. unexpected

  374. happened.

  375. The emperor

  376. himself

  377. decided that

  378. it was time

  379. to count

  380. all the

  381. people in

  382. the empire

  383. census time.

  384. And this

  385. was not the

  386. mail-out

  387. kind.

  388. This was the

  389. kind that

  390. required Joseph

  391. and Mary

  392. to make

  393. the long

  394. trip all

  395. the way

  396. from where

  397. they lived

  398. in the

  399. north

  400. back to

  401. their

  402. hometown.

  403. A little

  404. town called

  405. Bethlehem

  406. just outside

  407. of the

  408. big city

  409. of Jerusalem.

  410. I've been

  411. through this

  412. four times

  413. now and

  414. I can tell

  415. you when

  416. it's getting

  417. late into

  418. the third

  419. trimester

  420. you want to

  421. stay close

  422. to home.

  423. You don't

  424. want to be

  425. traveling

  426. especially not

  427. any great

  428. lengths.

  429. You don't

  430. want to be

  431. delivering your

  432. wife's baby

  433. on the

  434. side of

  435. the road.

  436. And these

  437. were not

  438. the days

  439. of automobiles.

  440. These are

  441. the days

  442. of walking

  443. and riding

  444. animals

  445. and carts.

  446. But the

  447. census required

  448. it and so

  449. they made

  450. the journey

  451. down to

  452. Bethlehem.

  453. Now I'm

  454. not saying

  455. that this is

  456. worse than

  457. what the

  458. women go

  459. through.

  460. they have

  461. it worse

  462. by far.

  463. But when

  464. it comes

  465. to what

  466. we men

  467. are responsible

  468. for in

  469. this whole

  470. thing,

  471. few things

  472. are as

  473. stressful

  474. as figuring

  475. out how

  476. to help

  477. your wife

  478. have all

  479. that she

  480. needs

  481. when the

  482. time comes

  483. for that

  484. baby to

  485. be born.

  486. I mean

  487. if we

  488. just knew

  489. the exact

  490. time that

  491. it would

  492. all begin

  493. and how

  494. long each

  495. stage of

  496. the labor

  497. would go,

  498. we could

  499. just plan,

  500. we could

  501. make

  502. arrangements.

  503. No doubt

  504. Joseph

  505. tried that

  506. night in

  507. Bethlehem.

  508. But by

  509. the plan

  510. of God

  511. his son,

  512. the baby,

  513. ended up

  514. having nothing

  515. better than

  516. a feeding

  517. trough for

  518. his little

  519. bed on

  520. the night

  521. that he

  522. was born.

  523. All the

  524. guest rooms

  525. were taken

  526. and where

  527. was this

  528. manger?

  529. Was it

  530. out back

  531. the inn?

  532. Was it

  533. at the

  534. local

  535. stable?

  536. Was it

  537. out behind

  538. the relative's

  539. house?

  540. It doesn't

  541. say.

  542. But that's

  543. how it

  544. went,

  545. the night

  546. that God's

  547. son was

  548. born into

  549. this world.

  550. The night

  551. when our

  552. Savior took

  553. his first

  554. breath with

  555. human lungs.

  556. It was a

  557. humble,

  558. quiet,

  559. and private

  560. birth in a

  561. lowly place

  562. there in

  563. Bethlehem.

  564. God did

  565. choose a

  566. very spectacular

  567. way to

  568. break the

  569. news of

  570. his son's

  571. birth,

  572. just not

  573. to the

  574. folks that

  575. we would

  576. have

  577. expected.

  578. Out in

  579. the fields

  580. around the

  581. town that

  582. night there

  583. were shepherds

  584. guarding their

  585. sheep,

  586. and God

  587. made the

  588. birth announcement

  589. to them.

  590. He lit

  591. up the

  592. sky for

  593. them.

  594. We read

  595. about this

  596. in Luke's

  597. gospel.

  598. An angel

  599. of the

  600. Lord appeared

  601. to them,

  602. and the

  603. glory of

  604. the Lord

  605. shone around

  606. them,

  607. and they

  608. were terrified.

  609. But the

  610. angel said

  611. to them,

  612. do not

  613. be afraid.

  614. I bring

  615. you good

  616. news that

  617. will cause

  618. great joy

  619. for all

  620. the people.

  621. Today,

  622. in the

  623. town of

  624. David,

  625. a Savior

  626. has been

  627. born to

  628. you.

  629. He is

  630. the Messiah,

  631. the Lord.

  632. this will

  633. be a sign

  634. to you.

  635. You will

  636. find a

  637. baby wrapped

  638. in cloths

  639. and lying

  640. in a

  641. manger.

  642. This one

  643. angel was

  644. then joined

  645. by countless

  646. more,

  647. and the

  648. shepherds

  649. heard them

  650. all praising

  651. God together

  652. and speaking

  653. of peace

  654. for those

  655. on whom

  656. God's favor

  657. rests.

  658. What an

  659. awesome and

  660. glorious sight

  661. that must

  662. have been.

  663. Then the

  664. sky goes

  665. dark

  666. again,

  667. the angels

  668. leave,

  669. and the

  670. shepherds

  671. run into

  672. the town

  673. in search

  674. of the

  675. Messiah.

  676. They relay

  677. all that

  678. they had

  679. seen and

  680. heard from

  681. the angels

  682. to Mary

  683. and Joseph,

  684. and the

  685. story goes

  686. on from

  687. there.

  688. This is

  689. the Christmas

  690. story.

  691. This is

  692. the good

  693. news that

  694. doesn't

  695. change,

  696. year to

  697. year.

  698. This is

  699. where we

  700. find joy.

  701. This is

  702. where we

  703. find peace,

  704. no matter

  705. what's going

  706. on in

  707. our lives.

  708. Jesus,

  709. our

  710. Emmanuel,

  711. has come.

  712. God

  713. has come

  714. to be

  715. with us.

  716. He has

  717. sent His

  718. Son,

  719. the great

  720. King

  721. of God's

  722. coming

  723. kingdom,

  724. kingdom,

  725. the kingdom

  726. of heaven,

  727. and He

  728. is the

  729. one who

  730. saves us

  731. from our

  732. sins.

  733. As we

  734. heard in

  735. the song,

  736. He came

  737. to live,

  738. to walk,

  739. to die,

  740. to rise,

  741. to reconcile

  742. the lost,

  743. to bring

  744. the Spirit's

  745. birth.

  746. love.

  747. While there

  748. may be some

  749. things about

  750. Christmas this

  751. year that

  752. are not

  753. exactly what

  754. we expect

  755. or hope,

  756. this good

  757. news of

  758. how God

  759. has sent

  760. His Son

  761. goes so

  762. far beyond

  763. what we

  764. deserve as

  765. sinners.

  766. It makes

  767. all the

  768. difference.

  769. God

  770. Himself

  771. loves

  772. you.

  773. And not

  774. just a

  775. little bit.

  776. This thing

  777. that He

  778. has done

  779. in sending

  780. His Son

  781. proves the

  782. immeasurable

  783. depths of

  784. His love

  785. for you

  786. and for

  787. me.

  788. You are

  789. cherished.

  790. You are

  791. treasured

  792. even more

  793. than you

  794. know or

  795. can imagine.

  796. for God

  797. so loved

  798. the world

  799. that He

  800. gave

  801. His one

  802. and only

  803. Son

  804. that whoever

  805. believes in

  806. Him

  807. shall not

  808. perish

  809. but have

  810. eternal

  811. life.

  812. And so

  813. rejoice this

  814. Christmas.

  815. God loves

  816. you.

  817. Rejoice.

  818. Let's pray.

  819. Father in

  820. Heaven,

  821. thank You

  822. for this

  823. incredible

  824. gift which

  825. we do

  826. not deserve.

  827. I pray

  828. that our

  829. hearts would

  830. live here

  831. in this

  832. truth that

  833. You love

  834. us this

  835. much to

  836. send Him

  837. to come

  838. to save

  839. us.

  840. it's hard

  841. for us to

  842. even fathom

  843. that You

  844. want to

  845. be with

  846. us,

  847. that You

  848. love us

  849. and desire

  850. to have

  851. us as

  852. Your people,

  853. as Your

  854. sons and

  855. daughters.

  856. What can

  857. we do but

  858. sing praise

  859. to You

  860. and thank

  861. You?

  862. I pray

  863. that this

  864. truth would

  865. just be

  866. full in

  867. our hearts

  868. for the

  869. rest of

  870. today and

  871. tomorrow as

  872. we celebrate.

  873. We ask

  874. this in

  875. Jesus'

  876. name.

  877. Amen.

  878. Amen.
