  1. All right, well, we are continuing our way through the letter that Paul wrote to Titus

  2. on the island of Crete.

  3. For those of you who are visiting or haven't been here in a while,

  4. we started a new series looking at this letter of Paul's.

  5. Paul, of course, was an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  6. which means that he was a spokesperson sent by Christ to speak Christ's words to the churches

  7. and to give them the instructions and guidance they needed

  8. as they began to be established all over the Mediterranean world.

  9. And Paul and Titus have been co-workers and partners in this work of proclaiming the gospel

  10. to various places all around the Mediterranean Sea.

  11. And one of those places was an island called Crete, which is just southeast of Greece.

  12. And last week we heard about how Paul left Titus on that island.

  13. And the reason was to put in order what was left unfinished.

  14. And we saw that the main work that Titus was to do in each of the churches was to appoint elders.

  15. He was to appoint leaders in the churches, men of good reputation,

  16. men of godly character, men who had proven themselves at home with their families,

  17. and men who were holding firmly to the word of God,

  18. to the gospel, and to all the teaching from God that goes with it.

  19. And as we heard last week, there were two reasons that they had to be men

  20. who hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught.

  21. First, so that they can encourage, exhort, instruct others by sound doctrine.

  22. And second, so that they can refute or correct or expose those who oppose it.

  23. Now, why is this so important?

  24. Well, Paul is about to tell Titus.

  25. Let me read it for us, starting in verse 9.

  26. So an elder must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught,

  27. so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.

  28. For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception,

  29. especially those of the circumcision group.

  30. They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households

  31. by teaching things they ought not to teach,

  32. and that for the sake of dishonest gain.

  33. One of Crete's own prophets has said it.

  34. Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.

  35. This saying is true.

  36. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith,

  37. and will pay no attention to Jewish myths,

  38. or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth.

  39. To the pure, all things are pure.

  40. But to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure.

  41. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.

  42. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny Him.

  43. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for doing anything good.

  44. So Paul tells us why it's so important to have qualified elders,

  45. men who are holding firmly to the trustworthy message,

  46. the gospel, the word of God.

  47. This is important, he says, because there are many rebellious people.

  48. The word here means insubordinate.

  49. People who are not subject to authority,

  50. but are ignoring it, or are even pushing back against it.

  51. And these are not just like any of the people on Crete.

  52. They are people who are amidst the churches,

  53. among the church people on Crete.

  54. People who are stirring up trouble,

  55. and inciting others to go against the trustworthy teaching,

  56. of Christ.

  57. Paul says that these people are full of meaningless talk.

  58. He's saying that their words are empty, irrelevant,

  59. that they lack any real substantial value.

  60. In fact, Paul says they are full of deception.

  61. They are deceivers, misleading people.

  62. Now just how aware of this, or intentional of this,

  63. they are, we don't know.

  64. But Paul gives us a little bit to understand the place that they're coming from.

  65. He says, especially those of the circumcision group.

  66. And that's a reference to some of these people being Jewish.

  67. Some of these people who are insubordinate,

  68. stirring up trouble, divisive.

  69. They're Jews.

  70. And they're not the sort of believing Jew that Paul is.

  71. They're perhaps more like the Pharisees,

  72. and the religious leaders in Israel.

  73. They don't seem to be embracing the trustworthy message about Christ as Messiah.

  74. Perhaps they were similar to the Judaizers,

  75. who were infiltrating the churches in Galatia,

  76. advocating that people must keep the law,

  77. and be circumcised,

  78. and live a good enough life to be accepted by God.

  79. We don't know the full extent of their teaching.

  80. But it's anti-Christ.

  81. It's anti-Christian enough

  82. that Paul says, in verse 11,

  83. they must be silenced.

  84. They're disrupting whole households

  85. by teaching things they ought not to teach.

  86. And that, for the sake of dishonest gain.

  87. So this is a real problem there on the island of Crete.

  88. There are deceptive, insubordinate,

  89. some Jewish, some not, teachers,

  90. and they are causing division and trouble in the churches.

  91. And it seems they're even working some kind of scheme

  92. to make money at this,

  93. to make a profit off of this.

  94. And Paul says to Titus,

  95. you must silence them.

  96. Rebuke them sharply.

  97. Verse 13.

  98. So if you can imagine yourself as Titus,

  99. I mean, this is not an easy assignment.

  100. Paul is basically saying,

  101. you need to go toe-to-toe

  102. with these influencers,

  103. these teachers.

  104. You need to silence them.

  105. You need to call them to repent.

  106. Down in verse 14,

  107. Paul implies that they're teaching Jewish myth.

  108. They're even giving commands.

  109. They've kind of set themselves up as authorities.

  110. And down in verse 14,

  111. Paul says that these are merely human commands

  112. of men who reject the truth.

  113. So tell the people in the churches on the island of Crete

  114. to pay no attention to those teachings.

  115. And then in the midst of all this,

  116. Paul quotes one of Crete's,

  117. the island's own prophets,

  118. in verse 12.

  119. He says,

  120. one of Crete's own prophets has said it.

  121. Cretans are always liars,

  122. evil brutes,

  123. lazy gluttons.

  124. This saying is true,

  125. says Paul.

  126. So evidently,

  127. the people on this island,

  128. in general,

  129. were known for a few things.

  130. They were known for being liars.

  131. And not just a little,

  132. but a lot.

  133. Always liars.

  134. So they were known for dishonesty,

  135. cheating,

  136. scamming,

  137. swindling,

  138. misleading.

  139. That was the norm.

  140. They were known for being evil brutes.

  141. Quite literally,

  142. evil beasts.

  143. Or wicked animals.

  144. Probably a nickname that they had earned

  145. from their just deceptive

  146. and downright malicious dealings

  147. with each other

  148. and with outsiders.

  149. So these guys are not known

  150. on this island

  151. for being trustworthy,

  152. for being kind.

  153. And finally,

  154. they were known for being lazy gluttons.

  155. They were known for their idleness,

  156. for being lazy,

  157. not wanting to work

  158. or put in any effort for anything.

  159. And they were gluttons.

  160. The picture we get here

  161. is of people indulging to the max

  162. in whatever cravings

  163. or pleasures

  164. they can get their hands on.

  165. So I don't know

  166. how many of you

  167. have ever seen the movie

  168. Pirates of the Caribbean.

  169. If you've never seen it,

  170. don't bother watching it.

  171. But if you have seen it,

  172. this sounds a lot like Tortuga,

  173. that sort of pirate haven

  174. or pit stop

  175. where people are constantly,

  176. you know,

  177. swashbuckling each other

  178. and double-crossing each other

  179. and eating and drinking themselves

  180. into a stupor,

  181. spending themselves broke

  182. and swindling others

  183. out of their goods and money.

  184. quite the reputation.

  185. Cretans are always liars,

  186. evil brutes,

  187. lazy gluttons.

  188. And Paul says,

  189. this saying is true.

  190. That basically sums it up.

  191. Therefore, says Paul,

  192. rebuke them sharply

  193. so that they will be sound

  194. in the faith

  195. and will pay no attention

  196. to Jewish myths

  197. or to the merely human commands

  198. of those who reject the truth.

  199. And it seems that here

  200. Paul has in view

  201. both the false teachers

  202. that he just mentioned

  203. as well as those in the churches

  204. who might listen to these people.

  205. Rebuke them sharply,

  206. says Paul.

  207. And notice the goal

  208. of that rebuke.

  209. It isn't just to scold them

  210. or to make them feel ashamed

  211. or to get them to shut up

  212. or smarten up.

  213. No, it's a sharp rebuke

  214. so that they will be sound

  215. in the faith.

  216. We're talking righteous rebuke.

  217. We're talking restorative rebuke.

  218. A rebuke that aims to see them

  219. turn away from this

  220. old way of living

  221. that's so common around them

  222. and turn to the way of Christ

  223. and to the way that fits

  224. with a faith in Jesus.

  225. Well, as we consider

  226. the culture of Crete,

  227. if you were here last Sunday,

  228. you can see there's quite

  229. a contrast between

  230. the requirements of the elders

  231. and the leaders

  232. up in verses 5 to 9

  233. and the general conduct

  234. of the people

  235. that are all around them

  236. on this island.

  237. Elders, and as we said last week,

  238. really, all mature believers

  239. are to be trustworthy,

  240. are to be faithful,

  241. are to be honest,

  242. are to be disciplined

  243. and self-controlled

  244. in the midst of a culture

  245. that is not trustworthy,

  246. that is deceitful,

  247. that is wicked, lazy,

  248. self-indulgent.

  249. Let's continue on in verse 15.

  250. Paul says,

  251. To the pure,

  252. all things are pure.

  253. But to those who are corrupted

  254. and do not believe,

  255. nothing is pure.

  256. This might be specifically pointed

  257. at the circumcision group.

  258. The Pharisees,

  259. the ones who opposed Christ,

  260. they were known

  261. for their strict standards

  262. of ritual cleanliness.

  263. They were known

  264. for all these ceremonial washings

  265. that they did

  266. because everything is unclean.

  267. They would wash their hands

  268. ceremonially,

  269. maybe even sometimes

  270. take a bath

  271. to cleanse themselves

  272. if they went

  273. into the marketplace

  274. because maybe some

  275. of the spiritual filth

  276. on the people

  277. got onto me.

  278. And Paul seems

  279. to be refuting

  280. that kind of mindset

  281. with a little bit

  282. of a gross exaggeration

  283. to make a point.

  284. He says,

  285. To those who are corrupted

  286. and do not believe,

  287. nothing is pure.

  288. But in reality,

  289. he says,

  290. To those who are pure,

  291. to those who are truly pure,

  292. washed clean by Christ,

  293. all things are pure.

  294. Now that doesn't mean

  295. that sinful behaviors

  296. become pure.

  297. Of course not.

  298. It means that all the good things

  299. that God created

  300. and has given to man

  301. for his benefit

  302. and his enjoyment

  303. and his use,

  304. all of those things are clean.

  305. All of those things are pure.

  306. All of those things are good.

  307. By faith in the truth of God,

  308. we who believe in Christ

  309. and have been washed

  310. and made pure,

  311. we see the beauty

  312. of those things,

  313. the goodness of those things,

  314. the benefit of those things.

  315. Many man-made religions

  316. have treated marriage

  317. or sex

  318. or certain kinds of food

  319. or certain kinds of work

  320. as though they are dirty

  321. and defiling of a person.

  322. But to those who belong to Christ

  323. and have been made pure

  324. through faith in him,

  325. we see all these things

  326. with a right perspective now.

  327. All that man-made religiousness

  328. is corrupt.

  329. It's crooked.

  330. Paul goes on.

  331. He says,

  332. They claim to know God,

  333. but by their actions

  334. they deny him.

  335. They are detestable,

  336. disobedient,

  337. and unfit

  338. for doing anything good.

  339. This is a pretty scathing rebuke.

  340. And it seems to refer

  341. not to the true believers

  342. in the church,

  343. but to the false teachers

  344. and to anyone else

  345. who's causing trouble.

  346. And it doesn't speak

  347. to their future.

  348. It doesn't predict

  349. how they will respond

  350. to this rebuke from Titus,

  351. but it speaks to how

  352. they are at present.

  353. They are disobedient.

  354. So not just spiritually apathetic,

  355. but worse.

  356. They're doing the opposite

  357. of Christ's commands.

  358. Paul says,

  359. They are detestable.

  360. This is a really strong word.

  361. Abhorrent is basically a synonym.

  362. That's quite a thing

  363. to say about a person.

  364. But right now,

  365. they are doing abhorrent

  366. and detestable things.

  367. Deceiving families,

  368. swindling them out of their money.

  369. And finally,

  370. Paul says,

  371. They are unfit

  372. for doing anything good.

  373. Again,

  374. another very strong statement.

  375. At the least,

  376. this means that these people

  377. are disqualified

  378. from serving in church leadership

  379. and probably from any other role

  380. in the church.

  381. In their present state

  382. of defiance and disbelief,

  383. they're not only no benefit,

  384. but they're dangerous.

  385. They're damaging.

  386. They're disruptive.

  387. Nothing good

  388. can come from them

  389. unless they have a serious

  390. change of heart

  391. and repent.

  392. But probably the clearest

  393. and most startling statement

  394. comes before all this

  395. in verse 16.

  396. They claim

  397. to know God,

  398. but by their actions,

  399. they deny Him.

  400. They claim to know God,

  401. but by their actions,

  402. they deny Him.

  403. So these teachers,

  404. these influencers

  405. amidst the churches,

  406. they're not the kind of people

  407. who are promoting

  408. other world religions.

  409. They're not promoting

  410. Greek gods

  411. or Egyptian gods

  412. or satanic worship

  413. or atheism.

  414. They're the kind of people

  415. who claim

  416. to know God,

  417. the one true God.

  418. They are professing believers

  419. in God.

  420. They say with their mouths,

  421. I believe in God,

  422. but,

  423. says Paul,

  424. by their actions,

  425. they deny Him.

  426. So with their mouths,

  427. they're saying,

  428. I believe in God,

  429. but Paul says,

  430. with their actions,

  431. they're saying,

  432. I don't believe in God.

  433. You've heard the saying,

  434. actions speak louder

  435. than words.

  436. Well,

  437. this is kind of

  438. a similar form of that.

  439. There are people there

  440. in Crete

  441. whose actions

  442. are speaking louder

  443. than their words.

  444. They're claiming

  445. to know God,

  446. and yet the way

  447. they are living

  448. betrays

  449. that profession.

  450. It shows it

  451. to be false.

  452. It's possible

  453. to be a professing

  454. believer in God,

  455. but not be

  456. a Christian.

  457. Believing in Jesus,

  458. as we often say here,

  459. is enough.

  460. It's all that it takes

  461. to be saved.

  462. That's the good news

  463. of Christ.

  464. He saves us

  465. as a gift of grace

  466. to us,

  467. as we just mentioned earlier

  468. during the prayer time.

  469. All we do

  470. to receive that gift

  471. is believe.

  472. believe.

  473. And there are people

  474. who truly believe

  475. from their hearts.

  476. And there are people

  477. who say they believe,

  478. but really do not.

  479. Sometimes we call this

  480. spurious faith.

  481. Spurious means

  482. not genuine,

  483. not authentic.

  484. It means that

  485. it's a faith

  486. that on the surface

  487. looks true,

  488. but at its root,

  489. at its core,

  490. it just lacks

  491. the characteristics,

  492. the qualities

  493. of true faith.

  494. And if you were here

  495. with us

  496. when we were working

  497. through the gospel

  498. of John

  499. and going through that,

  500. we ran into this kind

  501. of spurious faith

  502. a few times.

  503. Jesus,

  504. on more than one occasion,

  505. exposed the spurious

  506. faith of people

  507. in Israel.

  508. Many of them

  509. claimed to believe

  510. in God,

  511. and yet just like

  512. the people

  513. in this passage,

  514. they were denying him

  515. by their actions.

  516. They were saying,

  517. we are children of God,

  518. we are children

  519. of Abraham.

  520. And Jesus

  521. was saying to them,

  522. no,

  523. you are of your father,

  524. the devil.

  525. That's from John

    John 8 chapter mention

  526. chapter 8.

  527. Jesus exposed

  528. their so-called faith

  529. in God

  530. for what it really was.

  531. Empty words.

  532. Some of these people

  533. at the same time

  534. were plotting

  535. to murder Jesus.

  536. They were filled

  537. with greed

  538. and pride

  539. and covetousness.

  540. They were hypocritical.

  541. They were always

  542. judging others

  543. but never judging

  544. themselves.

  545. They were living

  546. for the praise

  547. of other people

  548. but not

  549. for the praise

  550. of God.

  551. Not only did we see

  552. this in the religious

  553. leaders but we saw

  554. it even in the

  555. followers of Jesus.

  556. We saw that many

  557. followed him around

  558. and were quite

  559. enamored

  560. by him.

  561. They liked the miracles

  562. that he was doing.

  563. They found the teaching

  564. very interesting.

  565. It tickled their fancy.

  566. And yet,

  567. they didn't believe

  568. his words.

  569. And when Jesus

  570. started saying

  571. some things

  572. that weren't popular

  573. or doing some things

  574. that were getting

  575. him into trouble

  576. with the religious

  577. leaders,

  578. suddenly these

  579. followers,

  580. they just melted

  581. away.

  582. They disappeared.

  583. Probably many of

  584. them had been

  585. baptized

  586. and had been

  587. saying,

  588. I believe in Jesus.

  589. I believe you're

  590. the Messiah.

  591. But then when

  592. things grew difficult

  593. or unpopular,

  594. they quit following

  595. Jesus.

  596. Their spurious

  597. faith was exposed.

  598. These are the people

  599. in Jesus' parable

  600. of the sower,

  601. if you know the

  602. parable,

  603. who receive the

  604. word with joy.

  605. Yes,

  606. I believe.

  607. But then in the

  608. time of testing

  609. or opposition

  610. or difficulty,

  611. their faith

  612. withers

  613. and they bear

  614. no fruit.

  615. Jesus says

  616. it's because

  617. they have

  618. no root.

  619. Their faith

  620. is only

  621. on the surface.

  622. It's shallow.

  623. it's up here

  624. but it's not

  625. in here.

  626. Spurious faith

  627. does not

  628. save a person.

  629. James makes

  630. this quite clear

  631. in his New Testament

  632. letter.

  633. James chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  634. James writes,

  635. What good is it,

  636. my brothers and

  637. sisters,

  638. if someone

  639. claims to have

  640. faith but has

  641. no deeds?

  642. Can such faith

  643. save them?

  644. Suppose a brother

  645. or sister is

  646. without clothes

  647. and daily food.

  648. If one of you

  649. says to them,

  650. Oh, go in peace,

  651. keep warm,

  652. and be well fed,

  653. but does nothing

  654. about their

  655. physical needs,

  656. what good is it?

  657. In the same way,

  658. faith by itself,

  659. if it is not

  660. accompanied by

  661. action,

  662. is dead.

  663. But someone

  664. will say,

  665. You have faith,

  666. I have deeds.

  667. Show me your

  668. faith without

  669. deeds,

  670. and I will

  671. show you my

  672. faith by

  673. my deeds.

  674. You believe

  675. that there is

  676. one God?

  677. Good.

  678. Even the demons

  679. believe that

  680. and shudder.

  681. So a profession

  682. of faith in God

  683. or in Jesus,

  684. it must be

  685. weighed,

  686. it must be

  687. proved by

  688. how a person

  689. lives,

  690. because how

  691. we live

  692. reveals

  693. what we

  694. really believe.

  695. In the words

  696. of Jesus,

  697. you will know

  698. them by

  699. their fruit.

  700. Jesus

  701. said it this

  702. way,

  703. he said,

  704. watch out

  705. for false

  706. prophets.

  707. They come

  708. to you in

  709. sheep's clothing,

  710. but inwardly

  711. they are

  712. ferocious

  713. wolves.

  714. By their

  715. fruit,

  716. you will

  717. recognize

  718. them.

  719. Do people

  720. pick grapes

  721. from thorn

  722. bushes,

  723. or figs

  724. from thistles?

  725. Likewise,

  726. every good

  727. tree bears

  728. good fruit,

  729. but a bad

  730. tree bears

  731. bad fruit.

  732. A good

  733. tree cannot

  734. bear bad

  735. fruit,

  736. and a bad

  737. tree cannot

  738. bear good

  739. fruit.

  740. Every tree

  741. that does

  742. not bear

  743. good fruit

  744. is cut

  745. down and

  746. thrown into

  747. the fire.

  748. Thus,

  749. by their

  750. fruit,

  751. you will

  752. recognize

  753. them.

  754. So this

  755. is the

  756. way,

  757. says Paul,

  758. to discern

  759. false

  760. teachers,

  761. false

  762. prophets.

  763. Do their

  764. actions,

  765. does the

  766. way that

  767. they live

  768. say,

  769. yes,

  770. Jesus is

  771. Lord?

  772. Do they

  773. generally

  774. obey his

  775. commands and

  776. seek to

  777. do what

  778. is pleasing

  779. to Christ?

  780. Or do

  781. their actions,

  782. does the

  783. way they

  784. live say,

  785. no,

  786. Jesus is

  787. not really

  788. the Lord?

  789. does their

  790. living match

  791. their

  792. profession?

  793. Now,

  794. this doesn't

  795. mean that

  796. true believers

  797. never sin.

  798. Of course

  799. not.

  800. When it

  801. comes to

  802. these things,

  803. we're talking

  804. about the

  805. general pattern

  806. of a

  807. person's

  808. life.

  809. Is there

  810. good fruit

  811. growing,

  812. or is it

  813. bad fruit?

  814. How does

  815. this apply

  816. to us?

  817. Well,

  818. these words

  819. might be

  820. helpful to

  821. us in

  822. understanding

  823. that there's

  824. a clear

  825. contrast

  826. between a

  827. true believer

  828. and an

  829. unbeliever,

  830. between a

  831. Christian and

  832. a person of

  833. the world.

  834. These words

  835. might also be

  836. helpful as we

  837. seek to sift

  838. through some

  839. of the voices

  840. that are

  841. coming at us

  842. in our

  843. world,

  844. especially those

  845. who claim to

  846. have discernment

  847. and that we're

  848. all missing out

  849. on some

  850. important

  851. understanding

  852. or teaching.

  853. But before

  854. we get to

  855. examining others

  856. and discerning

  857. others,

  858. God's word

  859. is clear

  860. that we must

  861. first examine

  862. ourselves.

  863. Jesus said

  864. it this way.

  865. He said,

  866. Why do you

  867. look at the

  868. speck of

  869. sawdust in

  870. your brother's

  871. eye and

  872. pay no

  873. attention to

  874. the plank

  875. in your

  876. own eye?

  877. How can

  878. you say to

  879. your brother,

  880. let me take

  881. the speck out

  882. of your eye

  883. when all the

  884. time there's

  885. a plank in

  886. your own

  887. eye?

  888. You hypocrite.

  889. First,

  890. take the

  891. plank out of

  892. your own

  893. eye and

  894. then you

  895. will see

  896. clearly to

  897. remove the

  898. speck from

  899. your brother's

  900. eye.

  901. Before we

  902. get to

  903. examining and

  904. discerning

  905. others,

  906. we must

  907. first examine

  908. ourselves.

  909. Paul said

  910. it this way

  911. in his letter

  912. to the church

  913. at Rome.

  914. He said,

  915. If you're

  916. convinced that

  917. you are a

  918. guide for

  919. the blind,

  920. a light for

  921. those who

  922. are in the

  923. dark,

  924. an instructor

  925. of the

  926. foolish,

  927. a teacher

  928. of little

  929. children,

  930. because you

  931. have in the

  932. law,

  933. the embodiment

  934. of knowledge

  935. and truth,

  936. you then,

  937. who teach

  938. others,

  939. do you not

  940. teach yourself?

  941. You who

  942. preach against

  943. stealing,

  944. do you

  945. steal?

  946. And Paul

  947. goes on.

  948. Again,

  949. before we get

  950. to examining

  951. others,

  952. we need to

  953. first examine

  954. ourselves.

  955. Paul actually

  956. says it

  957. point blank

  958. in his letter

  959. to the

  960. Corinthians.

  961. He says

  962. examine

  963. yourselves

  964. to see

  965. whether you

  966. are in

  967. the faith.

  968. Test

  969. yourselves.

  970. Do you

  971. not realize

  972. that Christ

  973. Jesus is

  974. in you?

  975. Unless,

  976. of course,

  977. you fail

  978. the test.

  979. And this

  980. is really

  981. the invitation

  982. of this

  983. passage in

  984. Titus,

  985. isn't it?

  986. Here are

  987. these people

  988. who are

  989. claiming to

  990. know God,

  991. yet by their

  992. actions they

  993. are denying

  994. him.

  995. The invitation

  996. here is

  997. for each

  998. of us,

  999. to each

  1000. of us,

  1001. to look

  1002. at ourselves.

  1003. Am I

  1004. claiming to

  1005. know God?

  1006. Am I

  1007. claiming to

  1008. be a follower

  1009. of Jesus?

  1010. Do my

  1011. actions claim

  1012. that as

  1013. well?

  1014. If I

  1015. believe Christ

  1016. is the

  1017. king,

  1018. will I

  1019. not,

  1020. on the

  1021. whole,

  1022. in general,

  1023. as my

  1024. pattern,

  1025. obey,

  1026. his

  1027. commands?

  1028. Now,

  1029. sometimes I

  1030. know we

  1031. hear these

  1032. words,

  1033. take the

  1034. log out of

  1035. your own

  1036. eye and

  1037. examine

  1038. yourselves,

  1039. and we

  1040. may wonder,

  1041. well,

  1042. how do we

  1043. do that?

  1044. What does

  1045. it mean to

  1046. examine myself?

  1047. Do we

  1048. just pray and

  1049. ask God

  1050. about it?

  1051. Well,

  1052. I think that's

  1053. a good start,

  1054. but then what

  1055. do we do

  1056. after that?

  1057. Do we

  1058. wait for a

  1059. feeling of

  1060. confirmation

  1061. that we

  1062. pass the

  1063. test?

  1064. Christ?

  1065. The Bible

  1066. tells us that

  1067. God's spirit

  1068. does live

  1069. within his

  1070. people,

  1071. and that

  1072. his spirit

  1073. testifies with

  1074. our spirit

  1075. that we are

  1076. his children.

  1077. So yes,

  1078. there is an

  1079. inward feeling,

  1080. there is an

  1081. inward convincing

  1082. that's going on

  1083. in our hearts

  1084. if we belong

  1085. to Christ and

  1086. we have his

  1087. spirit in us.

  1088. But here's the

  1089. rub.

  1090. For those

  1091. who do not

  1092. really believe

  1093. in Christ,

  1094. they too

  1095. seem to have

  1096. some kind

  1097. of an

  1098. inward feeling,

  1099. an inward

  1100. convincing going

  1101. on in their

  1102. hearts too.

  1103. Somehow they

  1104. justify themselves.

  1105. They say,

  1106. yeah,

  1107. yeah,

  1108. I believe.

  1109. I'm a good

  1110. person.

  1111. I'm okay

  1112. with God.

  1113. Feelings are

  1114. maybe not

  1115. especially reliable

  1116. in indicating

  1117. what the truth

  1118. of the matter

  1119. is.

  1120. Both the

  1121. believer

  1122. and the

  1123. unbeliever

  1124. feel they

  1125. pass the

  1126. test.

  1127. But the

  1128. Bible tells

  1129. us that we

  1130. will all

  1131. stand before

  1132. the judgment

  1133. seat of

  1134. Christ.

  1135. Romans 14

  1136. 10,

  1137. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:10

  1138. 5,

  1139. verse 10.

  1140. And what

  1141. will be the

  1142. basis?

  1143. What will be

  1144. the standard

  1145. by which we're

  1146. judged?

  1147. Is it by how

  1148. strong we

  1149. felt in our

  1150. relationship to

  1151. Jesus?

  1152. The answer

  1153. is no.

  1154. It will be

  1155. based on what

  1156. we did.

  1157. how we

  1158. lived.

  1159. What we

  1160. did, how

  1161. we lived,

  1162. that will be

  1163. the evidence

  1164. of whether

  1165. our faith

  1166. in Jesus

  1167. was genuine

  1168. or spurious.

  1169. What was

  1170. the fruit

  1171. of our

  1172. faith?

  1173. Was

  1174. ours a

  1175. true

  1176. living faith

  1177. with deeds,

  1178. good deeds

  1179. flowing out of

  1180. it, good fruit

  1181. coming from

  1182. it?

  1183. or was it

  1184. a dead

  1185. faith from

  1186. which nothing

  1187. good came?

  1188. Did we

  1189. receive the

  1190. word of God

  1191. with joy and

  1192. persevere and

  1193. bear fruit?

  1194. Or did we

  1195. receive it with

  1196. joy but then

  1197. fall away from

  1198. Christ and go

  1199. after the

  1200. chasing of our

  1201. own pleasures

  1202. and idols and

  1203. just kind of

  1204. wither spiritually?

  1205. This kind of

  1206. self-examination,

  1207. I mean it does

  1208. require prayer

  1209. but it also

  1210. requires us to

  1211. take a sober

  1212. look at our

  1213. daily lives

  1214. and whether or

  1215. not we're

  1216. living in

  1217. obedience to

  1218. Jesus.

  1219. Not perfectly

  1220. of course

  1221. but as the

  1222. general pattern.

  1223. if that's not

  1224. the case,

  1225. if you look at

  1226. your life and

  1227. you look at

  1228. the pages of

  1229. the Bible and

  1230. you see what

  1231. Jesus is

  1232. commanding and

  1233. you look at

  1234. your life and

  1235. you see that

  1236. that's out of

  1237. sync.

  1238. I'm not living

  1239. in obedience to

  1240. Jesus.

  1241. Maybe you

  1242. realize that

  1243. you're just

  1244. doing a

  1245. meager,

  1246. bare minimum

  1247. kind of

  1248. obedience to

  1249. Jesus just

  1250. to appease

  1251. your conscience.

  1252. If that's

  1253. you, let me

  1254. bring the

  1255. words of

  1256. Christ.

  1257. to bear on

  1258. you this

  1259. morning.

  1260. You are in

  1261. great danger.

  1262. You might be

  1263. able to fool

  1264. others around

  1265. you but you

  1266. can't fool

  1267. God.

  1268. The final

  1269. resting place

  1270. for those who

  1271. do not have

  1272. true faith

  1273. in Jesus,

  1274. the Bible

  1275. says is the

  1276. lake of fire.

  1277. Hell.

  1278. God's

  1279. God's

  1280. God.

  1281. And it's

  1282. not just a

  1283. one-time

  1284. mention.

  1285. These are the

  1286. words of

  1287. God, the

  1288. words of

  1289. Christ again

  1290. and again

  1291. to us in

  1292. many different

  1293. places and

  1294. passages.

  1295. Jesus talked

  1296. about it.

  1297. How eternal

  1298. punishment is

  1299. the just

  1300. sentence that

  1301. we deserve

  1302. if we do

  1303. not from the

  1304. heart receive,

  1305. believe in

  1306. Jesus Christ

  1307. because all

  1308. of us have

  1309. sinned and

  1310. fall short of

  1311. God's glory.

  1312. The good

  1313. news is God

  1314. doesn't want

  1315. you to go

  1316. there.

  1317. He loves

  1318. you.

  1319. He's calling

  1320. you today, if

  1321. you haven't done

  1322. this already, to

  1323. repent and to

  1324. fully embrace

  1325. Jesus Christ,

  1326. the Savior,

  1327. that he has

  1328. provided.

  1329. God, maybe

  1330. you're here and

  1331. you know that

  1332. you don't

  1333. believe, at

  1334. least not deep

  1335. down in here

  1336. anyway, as

  1337. you should.

  1338. Maybe you feel

  1339. like you're on

  1340. the edge of a

  1341. cliff and

  1342. jumping off that

  1343. cliff and

  1344. surrendering your

  1345. life and your

  1346. heart to Jesus

  1347. almost feels like

  1348. suicide, feels

  1349. like death.

  1350. How could I do

  1351. that?

  1352. And maybe you

  1353. feel the, you

  1354. know, I'm just

  1355. going to back

  1356. away from the

  1357. edge.

  1358. I'm just going

  1359. to kind of go

  1360. back to the

  1361. safety and the

  1362. comforts of my

  1363. life and how

  1364. it's, how, the

  1365. way that I've

  1366. been living.

  1367. But maybe today,

  1368. this morning, you

  1369. hear King Jesus

  1370. calling you to

  1371. jump off the

  1372. cliff of faith.

  1373. Surrendering your

  1374. life to Jesus, it

  1375. does feel like a

  1376. kind of death to

  1377. yourself.

  1378. Jesus said so.

  1379. He said,

  1380. whoever wants to

  1381. be my disciple must

  1382. deny himself

  1383. and take up his

  1384. cross, that's

  1385. death, and

  1386. follow me.

  1387. For whoever

  1388. wants to save

  1389. their life, that's

  1390. back away from

  1391. the cliff, keep

  1392. doing what I've

  1393. been doing.

  1394. For whoever

  1395. wants to save

  1396. their life will

  1397. lose it, said

  1398. Jesus.

  1399. But whoever

  1400. loses their

  1401. life, that's

  1402. jumping off the

  1403. cliff of faith,

  1404. whoever loses

  1405. their life for me

  1406. and for the

  1407. gospel will save

  1408. it.

  1409. If you haven't

  1410. already done this,

  1411. I urge you, jump

  1412. off the cliff of

  1413. faith into the

  1414. loving arms of

  1415. Jesus.

  1416. He will catch you.

  1417. True belief in

  1418. Jesus, at least at

  1419. the beginning, at the

  1420. outset, it does feel

  1421. like a suicide.

  1422. It feels like a

  1423. death.

1424. But it's the way to

  1425. find true life.

  1426. it's the way to

  1427. find that lasting

  1428. joy and peace and

  1429. hope and life that

  1430. you've been looking

  1431. for.

1432. It's the way to have

  1433. your sins forgiven

  1434. and to enter into

  1435. that restored

  1436. relationship with a

  1437. Father in heaven who

  1438. loves you.

  1439. I hope and I pray

  1440. that when that final

  1441. day comes, not a

1442. single one of us in

  1443. this room will have

  1444. this for our life

  1445. verse.

  1446. They claimed to

  1447. know God, but by

  1448. their actions, they

  1449. denied him.

  1450. Let's pray.

  1451. Father in heaven, we

  1452. thank you for your

  1453. word.

  1454. And I know that it's

  1455. not sometimes what we

1456. want to hear, that it's

  1457. sometimes hard words,

  1458. not the most pleasant

  1459. things to think about.

1460. But we thank you that

1461. you speak the truth to

  1462. us because you love

  1463. us.

1464. And I pray that these

  1465. words would bear

  1466. great fruit in our

  1467. lives.

1468. I pray that every one

  1469. of us would surrender

  1470. completely to you and

1471. that our faith in you

1472. would grow and that you

  1473. would turn our lives

  1474. upside down and change

1475. us for the good that

1476. you long to do in us

  1477. and for your own

  1478. glory.

  1479. Thank you for sending

  1480. Jesus to save us.

  1481. Thank you for your

  1482. Holy Spirit.

  1483. We commit ourselves to

  1484. you in his name.

  1485. Amen.
