  1. As we come to the Word this morning, I want to begin with a question.

  2. Do you remember what life was like before you came to know Jesus?

  3. Before you became a Christian?

  4. Now I know that there are some of you who might be thinking,

  5. well I'm here today and I'm actually not a Christian.

  6. Maybe you've thought about fully embracing the Lord Jesus as your Savior and your King,

  7. but you just haven't brought yourself to do it.

  8. And if that's you this morning, then this question is not really for you.

  9. But most of us here are Christians.

  10. Do you remember what life was like before you came to know Jesus?

  11. Some of you have been a Christian for decades.

  12. Perhaps it was so long ago that you can barely remember what it was like back then,

  13. especially if you were raised in a Christian home

  14. and regularly attended church from the time that you were little.

  15. Maybe others of you have only been a Christian for a few years.

  16. Maybe for you it's easy to remember what life was like before you became a Christian

  17. because it wasn't that long ago.

  18. And for some of you, maybe how long it's been doesn't really matter

  19. because you've never forgotten what life was like before you surrendered to Jesus.

  20. Maybe the way you lived and some of the choices that you made

  21. left such a mark that even the consequences of those old decisions are still felt even today.

  22. Do you remember what life was like before you came to know Jesus?

  23. Well, this morning as we come to God's Word,

  24. Jesus wants us to be reminded of what it's like to not be a Christian.

  25. He wants us to remember how life was before we believed.

  26. He's going to tell us how life is right now for all who are not his people.

  27. And he does this through the words of his Apostle Paul to Titus.

  28. We've been working our way through this book, and we're in chapter 3.

  29. Let me just read the first few verses of our passage for us this morning.

  30. Titus chapter 3, starting in verse 3.

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  31. Paul writes,

  32. At one time, we too were foolish, disobedient,

  33. deceived, and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures.

  34. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

  35. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,

  36. he saved us.

  37. Not because of righteous things we had done,

  38. but because of his mercy.

  39. So Paul, speaking for Jesus, has written this letter to Titus.

  40. For those of you who are visiting with us and haven't been here for the whole series,

  41. Titus is on the island of Crete,

  42. and Paul has left him there to put things in order in the churches on the island.

  43. Titus is to install qualified elders in each of the churches.

  44. He's to rebuke false teachers who have crept into the churches,

  45. and he's to teach about God's salvation,

  46. and about how to live good, holy, and upright lives.

  47. Paul has just finished urging Titus, here in chapter 3,

  48. to teach the people to be subject to rulers and authorities,

  49. to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,

  50. to slander no one,

  51. to be peaceable and considerate,

  52. and always to be gentle toward everyone.

  53. And now as Paul has been urging Christ's people to live good,

  54. holy, upright lives,

  55. he now points us back for a moment to reflect on what life was like

  56. before we came to believe in Jesus.

  57. He says,

  58. At one time, we too were foolish.

  59. When it came to spiritual things,

  60. when it came to the truth,

  61. we were senseless.

  62. We were stupid.

  63. Like fools, we weren't seeing things clearly.

  64. We weren't thinking straight,

  65. and it led us to do many foolish things,

  66. senseless things.

  67. At best, just wasting our lives.

  68. And at worst, like fools,

  69. doing damage and harm,

  70. not only to ourselves,

  71. but also to the people around us.

  72. We were foolish.

  73. At one time, we too were disobedient.

  74. The overall way that we lived

  75. was not in submission to God.

  76. We were disobedient.

  77. We were doing the things that God said not to do,

  78. and we were neglecting to do the things

  79. that God said we ought to do.

  80. We too were deceived, he says.

  81. This is a powerful word.

  82. In our lives before Christ,

  83. we were bought into lies,

  84. and we didn't even know it.

  85. We were like people who had gone off the path of truth

  86. and had wandered away and were lost,

  87. and we were unable to see

  88. even where we had taken our many wrong turns.

  89. In fact, we maybe even thought

  90. that we were on the right path.

  91. We were deceived.

  92. And if that wasn't bad enough,

  93. he says,

  94. we were also enslaved

  95. by all kinds of passions and pleasures.

  96. It's another powerful picture here.

  97. He says,

  98. we were like slaves.

  99. We were like people reduced to servitude

  100. and serving our masters.

  101. And who were our masters?

  102. Well, the various passions and pleasures

  103. that we had back then,

  104. they were our masters.

  105. We were like people out of control,

  106. ruled by our desires,

  107. helpless to say no to them.

  108. We were just kind of driven

  109. by this insatiable thirst

  110. for pleasures and comforts.

  111. It was our passions.

  112. It was our cravings

  113. for which we lived.

  114. And the decisions that we made,

  115. by and large,

  116. reflected these enslaving desires.

  117. And here again,

  118. we notice one of the strong themes

  119. of this letter,

  120. which we've highlighted a few times.

  121. Crete is the island

  122. that's known for laziness.

  123. It's the island that's known

  124. for a lack of self-control,

  125. for gluttony,

  126. for drunkenness,

  127. as we've heard throughout the letter.

  128. And Christ has been urging

  129. his people there on Crete

  130. to live self-controlled lives.

  131. Don't live that way anymore.

  132. And so here Paul is saying,

  133. we used to be just like them.

  134. We used to be just like everyone else

  135. there on the island of Crete.

  136. We too were just living

  137. to please ourselves,

  138. living to indulge our cravings,

  139. living to satisfy our lusts.

  140. And we were powerless to do otherwise.

  141. He says,

  142. we too lived in malice and envy.

  143. And it's maybe a little bit flat

  144. of a translation.

  145. I think some of the other ones

  146. you guys may have out there

  147. capture it better.

  148. We were spending our lives,

  149. we were spending our lives

  150. in malice and envy.

  151. This was an ongoing thing.

  152. This was day after day,

  153. spending our lives in malice.

  154. And malice maybe is not even

  155. the right word

  156. because we always think malice today.

  157. We think of intention to harm others.

  158. But this is a more general word.

  159. Refers generally to wrongness,

  160. badness, wickedness.

  161. So we were just kind of

  162. sort of spending our days,

  163. day after day,

  164. in sin.

  165. And in envy.

  166. We were always looking at

  167. what others had.

  168. And coveting.

  169. We were always wishing.

  170. We were always wanting.

  171. We were always desiring

  172. what they had for ourselves.

  173. Hardly content

  174. with what God had given us.

  175. Always seeing.

  176. Always wanting.

  177. We were hated

  178. and hating one another.

  179. We come to the realm of relationships.

  180. This is how relationships were like

  181. before Christ.

  182. Now hate is a very strong word today.

  183. And another way

  184. this could be translated perhaps

  185. is we were despicable

  186. and despising one another.

  187. The second statement is quite clear.

  188. Despising one another.

  189. Hating one another.

  190. So the normal pattern

  191. of relationships for us

  192. before Christ

  193. was for envy,

  194. was for strife,

  195. arguments,

  196. conflict,

  197. competing desires,

  198. lack of respect,

  199. and all of these things

  200. boiling up

  201. and growing to the point

  202. where we frequently,

  203. often,

  204. just despised

  205. other people.

  206. And of course,

  207. we felt justified

  208. in doing so,

  209. but probably the first word

  210. reveals the truth.

  211. We ourselves

  212. were acting

  213. despicably.

  214. We were inviting

  215. that hatred

  216. and despising

  217. of others

  218. in the way

  219. that we were living.

  220. now this is quite

  221. the picture.

  222. This is quite

  223. the reminder

  224. of how life was

  225. before these people

  226. came to know Jesus.

  227. And I think

  228. a couple thoughts

  229. are in order here.

  230. It might be difficult

  231. to relate to this list

  232. if you came to faith

  233. as a child.

  234. If you were saved

  235. as a child

  236. and most of your life

  237. all you've known

  238. is the Christian life,

  239. then this list

  240. might almost feel

  241. otherworldly.

  242. But know this,

  243. if that's you,

  244. if you had not

  245. come to know Jesus

  246. at a young age

  247. and you had grown up

  248. like everyone else,

  249. not believing in Jesus,

  250. not living for Jesus,

  251. then this is what life

  252. would be like

  253. for you

  254. through all that time

  255. before you met him.

  256. And if there's any doubt here,

  257. I just encourage you,

  258. ask some of our

  259. newest members here,

  260. those who more recently

  261. came to faith in Jesus,

  262. ask them if this description

  263. in verse 3

  264. captures what life was like

  265. just a couple years ago.

  266. Next, I think we need

  267. to remember that

  268. this description

  269. may not appear

  270. on the exterior

  271. of our lives

  272. as much as it's

  273. on the interior

  274. of people's lives.

  275. Amazingly,

  276. Paul includes himself

  277. in this description.

  278. He says,

  279. we too,

  280. and then he gives this list,

  281. which may be a little

  282. shocking to us,

  283. but at the least,

  284. this means that

  285. he's confessing

  286. that he himself

  287. was also like this

  288. before he was born again.

  289. And if you know

  290. Paul's story,

  291. I mean,

  292. this is kind of surprising.

  293. He was one of the Pharisees.

  294. He was one of the

  295. religious leaders

  296. of his day

  297. who had mastered

  298. the art of living

  299. the righteous life,

  300. the good,

  301. the holy life,

  302. at least on the outside,

  303. on the exterior.

  304. But inside his heart,

  305. he says,

  306. we too,

  307. I too,

  308. was foolish,

  309. disobedient,

  310. deceived,

  311. enslaved to passions

  312. and pleasures,

  313. spending my days

  314. in sin and envy,

  315. hateful and being hated.

  316. he was just keeping

  317. that all on the inside.

  318. He was putting on the facade

  319. for others to see.

  320. And there's one more reason

  321. why some may see this list

  322. and just feel like,

  323. ah, there's something

  324. not right about this.

  325. Let me ask it this way.

  326. If a person doesn't

  327. believe in Jesus

  328. and they read this list,

  329. this description

  330. on the screen,

  331. do you think that

  332. they would say,

  333. oh, yeah,

  334. that's me?

  335. Well, unless God's Spirit

  336. is convicting them of this,

  337. probably not.

  338. Did we think

  339. that we were foolish

  340. before we came

  341. to believe in Jesus?

  342. Probably not.

  343. We thought we were smart.

  344. We thought we were wise.

  345. We thought we had it figured out.

  346. We were proud.

  347. Did we think

  348. that we were enslaved

  349. by all kinds of passions

  350. and pleasures

  351. before we came

  352. to faith in Jesus?

  353. I mean,

  354. all we have to do

  355. is look at a person

  356. who's addicted

  357. to something today

  358. and how many

  359. of those people

  360. are unwilling

  361. even to admit

  362. that they have a problem?

  363. And that's just

  364. an addiction.

  365. I mean,

  366. there's other kinds

  367. of passions and pleasures

  368. as we've talked about.

  369. Passions is a very

  370. broad word.

  371. It refers to those

  372. worldly desires.

  373. It could be greed.

  374. A person could be

  375. enslaved to that desire

  376. to get more

  377. of the stuff

  378. of this earth,

  379. thinking this will

  380. make me happy.

  381. And on the outside,

  382. everything might

  383. look pretty good.

  384. But if you were to look

  385. at their bank statement,

  386. you might see

  387. that there's this

  388. massive pile of debt

  389. all piled up

  390. because they've been

  391. just buying,

  392. buying,

  393. buying,

  394. buying stuff

  395. that they don't need

  396. in order to scratch

  397. the itch of greed.

  398. So all of these things

  399. in this list

  400. can exist beneath

  401. the surface

  402. to a measure,

  403. beneath the surface

  404. of a person's life.

  405. And some of us

  406. had learned

  407. to hide these things

  408. pretty well

  409. when we were

  410. around other people,

  411. when we were

  412. outside our homes

  413. before we came

  414. to know Christ.

  415. And on top of all this,

  416. it says right here

  417. that we were deceived.

  418. We didn't think

  419. we had this problem.

  420. This isn't the description

  421. that we would have

  422. said,

  423. yeah,

  424. that's me.

  425. But according to God,

  426. this was our life.

  427. This is how it was

  428. until the kindness

  429. and love of God

  430. broke through

  431. and he saved us.

  432. At one time,

  433. we too were foolish,

  434. disobedient,

  435. deceived,

  436. and enslaved

  437. by all kinds of passions

  438. and pleasures.

  439. We lived in malice

  440. and envy,

  441. being hated

  442. and hating one another.

  443. But when the kindness

  444. and love of God,

  445. our Savior,

  446. appeared,

  447. he saved us.

  448. not because of

  449. righteous things

  450. that we had done,

  451. but because of

  452. his mercy.

  453. So Jesus wants us

  454. to remember

  455. what life was like

  456. before we came

  457. to know him.

  458. Or in some cases,

  459. what your life

  460. would be like today

  461. apart from Christ.

  462. But that's not all

  463. he wants us to remember.

  464. He also wants us

  465. to remember

  466. that God

  467. saved us

  468. from all that.

  469. He saved us.

  470. And he wants us

  471. to remember

  472. why he saved us,

  473. how he saved us,

  474. and for what purpose

  475. he has saved us.

  476. And we see these

  477. a little bit

  478. in verses 4 to 7 here.

  479. Let's start by looking

  480. at the why.

  481. But when the kindness

  482. and love of God,

  483. our Savior,

  484. appeared,

  485. he saved us

  486. not because of

  487. righteous things

  488. we had done.

  489. So the first reason

  490. he gives us,

  491. not quite the first,

  492. but very early on,

  493. it's a reason

  494. that we're not to think.

  495. It's not because

  496. I've lived such a good life.

  497. It's not because

  498. I've done so many

  499. right things

  500. that I deserved it

  501. or that I earned it.

  502. Get that out of our heads,

  503. he says.

  504. This is why

  505. when the kindness

  506. of God,

  507. our Savior,

  508. appeared,

  509. he saved us.

  510. He saved us

  511. because he is

  512. kind.

  513. Not because of

  514. who we are,

  515. but because of

  516. who he is.

  517. He is a kind

  518. hearted

  519. God.

  520. He is eager

  521. and willing

  522. to do good

  523. to people,

  524. to help us,

  525. to meet our needs.

  526. It was kindness

  527. that sent

  528. the Lord Jesus

  529. down from heaven

  530. to earth

  531. to save us.

  532. And not just kindness,

  533. but love also.

  534. When the love

  535. of God,

  536. our Savior,

  537. appeared,

  538. he saved us.

  539. God saves us

  540. because

  541. he

  542. loves us.

  543. Do you know

  544. that God

  545. loves you?

  546. That this is why

  547. he sent his son?

  548. Because he loves

  549. you.

  550. So these are

  551. the first two reasons.

  552. God is kind.

  553. God is love.

  554. And at the end

  555. of the verse,

  556. he saved us

  557. not because of

  558. righteous things

  559. we had done,

  560. but because of

  561. his mercy.

  562. His mercy.

  563. Mercy is that

  564. part of God

  565. that sees us

  566. as we are,

  567. undeserving,

  568. and yet gives

  569. to us anyway,

  570. meets our need

  571. anyway,

  572. despite what

  573. we deserve.

  574. And if we look

  575. ahead a little bit

  576. more,

  577. there's one more

  578. reason in verses

  579. six and seven

  580. where it talks

  581. about how he

  582. poured out

  583. the Spirit on us.

  584. It says that he

  585. did that generously.

  586. He poured out

  587. the Holy Spirit

  588. on us generously

  589. so that having

  590. been justified

  591. by his grace,

  592. we might become

  593. heirs.

  594. God is a

  595. gracious God.

  596. He is a

  597. generous God.

  598. He's not a

  599. stingy God

  600. who just wants

  601. to withhold

  602. from you.

  603. Just the opposite.

  604. He is eager

  605. and happily

  606. gives generously

  607. for the benefit

  608. of those

  609. that he has

  610. created.

  611. So this is

  612. the why

  613. he saved us.

  614. And it's

  615. wonderful.

  616. The reason

  617. is not anything

  618. to do with us

  619. and what we

  620. have done.

  621. It has to do

  622. with who he

  623. is.

  624. Because of who

  625. he is,

  626. he saved us.

  627. Because he is

  628. kind.

  629. Because he is

  630. loving.

  631. Because he is

  632. a merciful.

  633. Because he is

  634. a gracious

  635. God.

  636. God.

  637. So Paul

  638. wants us

  639. to remember

  640. how we

  641. used to

  642. live before

  643. we were

  644. in Christ.

  645. Then he

  646. wants us

  647. to remember

  648. what God

  649. did through

  650. Christ to

  651. save us.

  652. He wants

  653. us to know

  654. the why

  655. of it.

  656. Not because

  657. of good

  658. we had

  659. done,

  660. but because

  661. of who

  662. he is.

  663. And we

  664. just talked

  665. about his

  666. kindness,

  667. his love,

  668. his mercy,

  669. and his

  670. grace.

  671. And now

  672. we come

  673. to the

  674. how.

  675. How did

  676. God save

  677. us?

  678. Paul wants

  679. to remind

  680. us about

  681. that a

  682. little bit

  683. too.

  684. And we

  685. read this

  686. in verse

  687. 5,

  688. kind of in

  689. the second

  690. half of

  691. verse 5.

  692. He saved

  693. us through

  694. the washing

  695. of rebirth

  696. and renewal

  697. by the Holy

  698. Spirit,

  699. whom he

  700. poured out

  701. on us

  702. generously

  703. through Jesus

  704. Christ,

  705. our Savior.

  706. Paul tells

  707. us some

  708. of the how

  709. that we

  710. were

  711. saved.

  712. And there's

  713. a couple

  714. things here,

  715. at least

  716. three things,

  717. if not

  718. more.

  719. And maybe

  720. what's surprising

  721. to us is

  722. that as he

  723. tells us

  724. this,

  725. we're kind

  726. of almost

  727. expecting that

  728. he's going

  729. to say

  730. the cross,

  731. blood,

  732. the death

  733. of Jesus.

  734. And he

  735. doesn't.

  736. Those things

  737. are mentioned

  738. in other

  739. places,

  740. and they are

  741. part of the

  742. how.

  743. But Paul

  744. wants to

  745. focus here

  746. specifically

  747. on one

  748. thing,

  749. and it's

  750. the work

  751. of God's

  752. Holy Spirit

  753. in his

  754. people when

  755. they first

  756. come to

  757. be saved.

  758. He wants

  759. us to

  760. know about

  761. that,

  762. to be

  763. reminded

  764. of that.

  765. And so

  766. we see

  767. three things,

  768. three works

  769. of God's

  770. Spirit here

  771. mentioned.

  772. He saved

  773. us first

  774. through

  775. the washing,

  776. the washing

  777. of rebirth.

  778. As I've

  779. said on

  780. other occasions,

  781. sin is

  782. that which

  783. defiles us.

  784. It makes

  785. us unclean.

  786. It makes

  787. us dirty

  788. in the

  789. sight of

  790. a holy

  791. and perfect

  792. God.

  793. And so

  794. we have

  795. this need

  796. to be

  797. cleaned,

  798. to be

  799. washed,

  800. to be

  801. cleansed,

  802. not

  803. physically,

  804. but

  805. spiritually.

  806. God

  807. saved us

  808. by washing

  809. us

  810. clean.

  811. And there

  812. are some

  813. who think

  814. at this

  815. point that

  816. Paul is

  817. talking about

  818. water

  819. baptism.

  820. I don't

  821. think that's

  822. right.

  823. I think that

  824. Paul is

  825. talking about

  826. the thing

  827. that water

  828. baptism

  829. points to

  830. and that's

  831. the washing

  832. that the

  833. Holy Spirit

  834. does to

  835. each of

  836. us when

  837. we are

  838. saved.

  839. Do you

  840. remember what

  841. John the

  842. Baptist said?

  843. John the

  844. baptizer said,

  845. I baptize

  846. you with

  847. water,

  848. but there's

  849. one who's

  850. coming after

  851. me,

  852. talking about

  853. Jesus.

  854. He will

  855. baptize you.

  856. He will

  857. wash you

  858. with the

  859. Holy Spirit,

  860. in the

  861. Holy Spirit.

  862. water

  863. baptism is

  864. the lesser

  865. thing,

  866. the physical,

  867. the outward

  868. thing,

  869. and it

  870. points us

  871. to that

  872. kind of

  873. washing that

  874. the Spirit

  875. will do

  876. for all

  877. of Christ's

  878. people when

  879. they first

  880. put their

  881. trust in

  882. him.

  883. So that's

  884. the first

  885. thing,

  886. washing.

  887. The second

  888. thing,

  889. he saved

  890. us through

  891. the washing

  892. of rebirth.

  893. There's

  894. talk of

  895. rebirth here.

  896. Now,

  897. maybe your

  898. translation is

  899. a little

  900. different.

  901. There are

  902. quite a few

  903. that say

  904. regeneration,

  905. but I

  906. actually think

  907. that rebirth

  908. is such a

  909. good,

  910. insightful

  911. translation

  912. here.

  913. This is

  914. probably all

  915. Greek to

  916. you,

  917. but the

  918. word used

  919. here,

  920. it's a

  921. compound

  922. word.

  923. It's a

  924. word made

  925. up of two

  926. pieces,

  927. and if you

  928. would just

  929. go with the

  930. literal meaning,

  931. again,

  932. born.

  933. born.

  934. It's just

  935. stuck on the

  936. front is the

  937. word again,

  938. and then it's

  939. the verb to

  940. become,

  941. which usually,

  942. in reference to

  943. people,

  944. it's to be

  945. born.

  946. It's the

  947. again birth,

  948. and so

  949. rebirth,

  950. it really does

  951. fit here.

  952. Regeneration,

  953. it works too.

  954. It captures

  955. that idea of

  956. new life,

  957. but it's

  958. maybe a

  959. little less

  960. personal in

  961. our day

  962. today.

  963. When we

  964. regenerate,

  965. we might

  966. think of

  967. charging up a

  968. device or

  969. something like

  970. that,

  971. but rebirth,

  972. on the other

  973. hand,

  974. I mean,

  975. what's the

  976. metaphor that

  977. Jesus himself

  978. used when he

  979. was talking to

  980. Nicodemus?

  981. You must be

  982. born again to

  983. enter the

  984. kingdom of

  985. God,

  986. said Jesus.

  987. So I think

  988. this is a

  989. great translation.

  990. This is the

  991. second thing

  992. that God has

  993. done to save

  994. us.

  995. He has

  996. caused us to

  997. be reborn,

  998. to be born

  999. again.

  1000. He has given

  1001. us a new

  1002. life by his

  1003. Holy Spirit,

  1004. and the

  1005. emphasis here

  1006. is on the

  1007. complete and

  1008. total change,

  1009. utter transformation

  1010. by the Spirit

  1011. working in us.

  1012. That's what

  1013. rebirth is,

  1014. it's complete

  1015. overhaul.

  1016. And just as

  1017. with the

  1018. washing,

  1019. this is

  1020. something that

  1021. God does

  1022. in everyone

  1023. who he

  1024. saves.

  1025. He changes

  1026. us by his

  1027. Spirit's

  1028. power.

  1029. He makes

  1030. us radically

  1031. new.

  1032. The third

  1033. thing mentioned

  1034. here is that

  1035. he saved

  1036. us through

  1037. renewal by

  1038. the Holy

  1039. Spirit.

  1040. I think

  1041. this is just

  1042. another way of

  1043. saying the

  1044. same thing,

  1045. just kind of

  1046. coming at it

  1047. from a

  1048. parallel wording.

  1049. God has

  1050. saved us by

  1051. going to

  1052. work on

  1053. us, in

  1054. us, by

  1055. his Holy

  1056. Spirit in

  1057. a way that

  1058. makes us

  1059. new.

  1060. We are

  1061. renewed.

  1062. The old

  1063. way of life

  1064. that he's

  1065. been describing

  1066. in verse

  1067. three, the

  1068. way that we

  1069. once were,

  1070. well that no

  1071. longer fits

  1072. with who

  1073. we now

  1074. are because

  1075. we've been

  1076. made new.

  1077. This is how

  1078. Paul puts

  1079. it in his

  1080. letter to

  1081. the Corinthians

  1082. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:17

  1083. chapter 5

  1084. verse 17.

  1085. He says,

  1086. therefore, if

  1087. anyone is in

  1088. Christ, the

  1089. new creation

  1090. has come.

  1091. The old

  1092. has gone.

  1093. The new

  1094. is here.

  1095. And it's

  1096. wonderful.

  1097. When we're

  1098. newly saved

  1099. and converted

  1100. to Jesus,

  1101. boy do we

  1102. feel it.

  1103. Old desires

  1104. begin to

  1105. die.

  1106. New desires

  1107. come in and

  1108. take their

  1109. place.

  1110. The allure

  1111. of what is

  1112. dark and

  1113. evil

  1114. diminishes

  1115. and our

  1116. love for

  1117. what is

  1118. good and

  1119. right

  1120. increases.

  1121. Now it

  1122. doesn't mean

  1123. that every

  1124. temptation goes

  1125. away or

  1126. that we

  1127. never sin

  1128. again,

  1129. but it

  1130. does mean

  1131. that we

  1132. just no

  1133. longer fit

  1134. that old

  1135. way of

  1136. living anymore

  1137. because we

  1138. have been

  1139. deeply and

  1140. profoundly

  1141. changed

  1142. by God's

  1143. Holy Spirit

  1144. who has

  1145. come to

  1146. live inside

  1147. of us.

  1148. And this

  1149. is what

  1150. happened when

  1151. each of

  1152. us first

  1153. believed in

  1154. Jesus.

  1155. I mean truly

  1156. believed in

  1157. Jesus.

  1158. We were

  1159. changed.

  1160. We were

  1161. renewed by

  1162. the Holy

  1163. Spirit.

  1164. We were

  1165. reborn.

  1166. And I'm

  1167. just going to

  1168. quickly pick

  1169. on Thomas

  1170. Hoffer here.

  1171. Just a

  1172. few, well

  1173. it's a little

  1174. ways ago,

  1175. over a month

  1176. now.

  1177. He was

  1178. baptized in

  1179. January and

  1180. shared his

  1181. testimony with

  1182. us.

  1183. And hopefully

  1184. I'm capturing

  1185. it right,

  1186. but you fell

  1187. on the bed in

  1188. the hotel room

  1189. in utter

  1190. desperation,

  1191. sick and

  1192. tired of the

  1193. emptiness and

  1194. hopelessness of

  1195. that old life

  1196. described in

  1197. verse 3 here.

  1198. You called out

  1199. to God and

  1200. when you woke

  1201. up you felt

  1202. like a brand

  1203. new person

  1204. because God

  1205. had done that

  1206. work of making

  1207. you new.

  1208. That's what it

  1209. looks like.

  1210. Such an utter

  1211. change and

  1212. transformation

  1213. that even

  1214. Tom's wife

  1215. Alicia was

  1216. thinking,

  1217. what on earth

  1218. has happened

  1219. to him?

  1220. He's not the

  1221. same person.

  1222. That's what

  1223. rebirth and

  1224. renewal of the

  1225. Holy Spirit

  1226. looks like.

  1227. And that's

  1228. what God does

  1229. in our lives

  1230. when he saves

  1231. us.

  1232. So the

  1233. picture that

  1234. we get here,

  1235. let's bring in

  1236. that little extra

  1237. bit that comes.

  1238. Renewal by the

  1239. Holy Spirit

  1240. whom he poured

  1241. out on us

  1242. generously

  1243. through Jesus

  1244. Christ our

  1245. Savior.

  1246. The picture

  1247. that we get

  1248. here is God

  1249. up in heaven

  1250. above pouring

  1251. out his Holy

  1252. Spirit down

  1253. from heaven

  1254. to earth

  1255. on us.

  1256. Both Father

  1257. and Son

  1258. working together

  1259. giving the

  1260. Spirit in

  1261. order to

  1262. save us.

  1263. And notice

  1264. the metaphor

  1265. here.

  1266. He poured

  1267. out on us

  1268. richly,

  1269. generously,

  1270. I know I

  1271. kind of

  1272. mentioned this

  1273. before,

  1274. but when

  1275. God saves

  1276. us,

  1277. he's not

  1278. stingy.

  1279. He doesn't

  1280. look at you

  1281. and say,

  1282. oh, I see

  1283. the life that

  1284. you've lived.

  1285. I'm just

  1286. going to give

  1287. you a little

  1288. bit of my

  1289. Spirit.

  1290. No, he

  1291. pours the

  1292. Spirit on

  1293. us lavishly,

  1294. generously,

  1295. richly.

  1296. He's a

  1297. gracious,

  1298. giving God

  1299. who loves

  1300. to give.

  1301. He doesn't

  1302. think about

  1303. the cost.

  1304. He says,

  1305. it's absolutely

  1306. worth it

  1307. because I

  1308. love you.

  1309. I want

  1310. you.

  1311. So these

  1312. are the

  1313. three things

  1314. mentioned here

  1315. God has

  1316. done for

  1317. all of us

  1318. who have

  1319. put our

  1320. hope in

  1321. Jesus,

  1322. who have

  1323. come to

  1324. believe in

  1325. Jesus.

  1326. And these

  1327. are works

  1328. of God's

  1329. Spirit in

  1330. us at

  1331. that initial

  1332. point when

  1333. we first

  1334. become a

  1335. child of

  1336. God, when

  1337. we first

  1338. believe in

  1339. Jesus.

  1340. Lastly, we

  1341. want to

  1342. notice that

  1343. final thing.

  1344. He has

  1345. saved us.

  1346. We saw

  1347. the why.

  1348. we saw

  1349. a little

  1350. bit of

  1351. the how,

  1352. and now

  1353. he's going

  1354. to tell

  1355. us for

  1356. what purpose.

  1357. For what

  1358. purpose?

  1359. In

  1360. verse 7,

  1361. he has

  1362. done all

  1363. this so

  1364. that having

  1365. been justified

  1366. by his

  1367. grace, we

  1368. might become

  1369. heirs, having

  1370. the hope of

  1371. eternal life.

  1372. think of

  1373. the richest

  1374. man in the

  1375. world for a

  1376. moment.

  1377. Think of

  1378. Elon Musk.

  1379. I know that

  1380. he just got

  1381. passed by

  1382. someone else,

  1383. but it

  1384. changes so

  1385. often.

  1386. Just everybody

  1387. knows Elon

  1388. Musk.

  1389. Think of

  1390. what it would

  1391. be like if

  1392. he called

  1393. you up on

  1394. the phone

  1395. this afternoon

  1396. and he

  1397. said, I'd

  1398. like to put

  1399. your name

  1400. into my

  1401. will so

  1402. that you

  1403. would inherit

  1404. a portion of

  1405. my $200

  1406. billion fortune.

  1407. You wouldn't

  1408. even believe

  1409. it.

  1410. You'd think

  1411. it was a

  1412. scam.

  1413. Something too

  1414. good to be

  1415. true.

  1416. And it is.

  1417. He wouldn't

  1418. do that.

  1419. He doesn't

  1420. even know

  1421. us.

  1422. But God

  1423. would do

  1424. it.

  1425. He would

  1426. put your

  1427. name in.

  1428. He wants

  1429. you.

  1430. This is the

  1431. whole goal.

  1432. He saved

  1433. us so that

  1434. we might

  1435. become heirs.

  1436. He wants

  1437. you to

  1438. inherit

  1439. many wonderful

  1440. blessings,

  1441. many good

  1442. things, and

  1443. Paul just

  1444. puts the

  1445. spotlight on

  1446. one.

  1447. eternal

  1448. life.

  1449. What is

  1450. God known

  1451. for?

  1452. He is

  1453. known for

  1454. being the

  1455. everlasting

  1456. God, the

  1457. one who

  1458. lives forever.

  1459. And he

  1460. wants to

  1461. give of

  1462. that, that

  1463. life to

  1464. you.

  1465. That's why

  1466. he has

  1467. done all

  1468. this, so

  1469. that we

  1470. might become

  1471. heirs, so

  1472. that we

  1473. might be

  1474. able to

  1475. look forward

  1476. to

  1477. inheriting

  1478. this

  1479. wonderful

  1480. gift of

  1481. life forever

  1482. with him.

  1483. I love

  1484. this.

  1485. Sometimes we

  1486. just get it in

  1487. our heads that

  1488. God just hates

  1489. our sins so

  1490. much that he

  1491. just wants to

  1492. get it out of

  1493. his sight.

  1494. And that's

  1495. why he died

  1496. for us.

  1497. That's why he's

  1498. done all this

  1499. washing for

  1500. us.

  1501. But it's more

  1502. than that.

  1503. He's made us

  1504. clean.

  1505. He's washed

  1506. us.

  1507. He's utterly

  1508. transformed

  1509. us so

  1510. that we

  1511. can have

  1512. this new

  1513. life with

  1514. him forever.

  1515. He wants

  1516. you.

  1517. Verse 8,

  1518. this is a

  1519. trustworthy

  1520. saying, says

  1521. Paul, and I

  1522. want you to

  1523. stress these

  1524. things so

  1525. that those

  1526. who have

  1527. trusted in

  1528. God may

  1529. be careful

  1530. to devote

  1531. themselves to

  1532. doing what

  1533. is good.

  1534. These things

  1535. are excellent

  1536. and profitable

  1537. for everyone.

  1538. So Paul

  1539. says, Titus,

  1540. teach these

  1541. things.

  1542. Stress them.

  1543. Emphasize

  1544. them.

  1545. Declare

  1546. them.

  1547. This is the

  1548. wonderful truth

  1549. of our

  1550. salvation.

  1551. Tell the

  1552. people that

  1553. God has

  1554. done this

  1555. for them.

  1556. Remind

  1557. them again.

  1558. Remind

  1559. them of

  1560. the why.

  1561. Remind

  1562. them of

  1563. the how.

  1564. Remind

  1565. them of

  1566. what for.

  1567. And then

  1568. at the end

  1569. he comes

  1570. full circle

  1571. again to

  1572. this little

  1573. bit.

  1574. Teach

  1575. these things

  1576. so that

  1577. those who

  1578. have trusted

  1579. in God

  1580. may be

  1581. careful to

  1582. devote

  1583. themselves

  1584. to doing

  1585. what is

  1586. good.

  1587. The

  1588. gospel

  1589. leads us

  1590. to then

  1591. live out

  1592. a life

  1593. of goodness,

  1594. kindness,

  1595. love towards

  1596. others.

  1597. That's one

  1598. of the

  1599. themes of

  1600. this book.

  1601. The grace

  1602. of God

  1603. teaches us

  1604. to say

  1605. no to

  1606. ungodliness

  1607. and yes

  1608. to a

  1609. self-controlled

  1610. upright

  1611. holy life

  1612. in this

  1613. present age.

  1614. And so

  1615. I want

  1616. to just

  1617. remind you

  1618. today

  1619. of who

  1620. you used

  1621. to be

  1622. before you

  1623. met

  1624. Christ.

  1625. I want

  1626. to remind

  1627. you of

  1628. what you

  1629. would be

  1630. today

  1631. apart

  1632. from

  1633. Christ.

  1634. And I

  1635. want to

  1636. remind you

  1637. of what

  1638. God has

  1639. done to

  1640. save you.

  1641. He loves

  1642. you.

  1643. He is

  1644. kind.

  1645. He is

  1646. merciful.

  1647. He is

  1648. gracious.

  1649. He poured

  1650. out his

  1651. spirit.

  1652. He caused

  1653. you to be

  1654. reborn and

  1655. renewed

  1656. Christian.

  1657. And he's

  1658. done this so

  1659. that you can

  1660. be his

  1661. heir and

  1662. enjoy life

  1663. with him

  1664. forever.

  1665. This is the

  1666. gospel as

  1667. we see it

  1668. here in this

  1669. passage.

  1670. church.

  1671. We're going

  1672. to go to

  1673. the Lord's

  1674. table now.

  1675. And I

  1676. don't want to

  1677. preach a

  1678. whole other

  1679. sermon on

  1680. top of

  1681. this but

  1682. this gospel,

  1683. these wonderful

  1684. gifts, this

  1685. good news, it

  1686. was bought and

  1687. paid for for

  1688. all of us at

  1689. the cross.

  1690. He didn't

  1691. mention the

  1692. blood but we

  1693. know from other

  1694. passages that we

  1695. would not have

  1696. this right

  1697. standing, this

  1698. justified, having

  1699. been justified by

  1700. his grace apart

  1701. from the blood of

  1702. Jesus, apart

  1703. from his death

  1704. to atone for

  1705. our sins.

  1706. And so that's

  1707. what we're going

  1708. to reflect on

  1709. for a few

  1710. moments here as

  1711. we go to the

  1712. Lord's table.

  1713. And if you're

  1714. visiting with us,

  1715. feel free to

  1716. partake.

  1717. If you believe

  1718. in the Lord

  1719. Jesus and he

  1720. is your savior,

  1721. feel free to

  1722. partake.

  1723. And if not,

  1724. then just let

  1725. the cup and

  1726. the bread pass

  1727. you by.

  1728. We're going to

  1729. take a couple

  1730. minutes to just

  1731. pray and reflect

  1732. quietly.

  1733. And then after

  1734. I've done that,

  1735. we'll have

  1736. Charles and

  1737. Rod come up

  1738. and they will

  1739. serve us the

  1740. bread and

  1741. the cup.

  1742. The bread

  1743. represents Jesus'

  1744. body and the

  1745. blood, the cup

  1746. represents his

  1747. blood.

  1748. So let's reflect

  1749. on what Jesus

  1750. has done for

  1751. us and then

  1752. we'll partake

  1753. all together once

  1754. everyone has been

  1755. served.

  1756. Amen.

  1757. Amen.

  1758. Amen.

  1759. Amen.

  1760. Amen.

  1761. Amen.

  1762. Amen.

  1763. Amen.

  1764. Amen.

  1765. Amen.

  1766. Amen.

  1767. Amen.

  1768. Amen.

  1769. Amen.

  1770. Amen.

  1771. Amen.

  1772. Amen.
