  1. Well, it had been an awful weekend for the followers of Jesus as they watched the events unfold.

  2. First, Jesus' betrayal and capture in the Garden of Gethsemane.

  3. Then the corrupt and humiliating proceedings of Jesus' trials before the religious leaders,

  4. before King Herod, before Pilate.

  5. Then came the brutal treatment of Jesus by the soldiers as he was beaten and mocked.

  6. After that came the grueling procession of Jesus with criminals to the place of the skull, Golgotha.

  7. And finally came the agony and pinnacle of his suffering as Jesus was nailed alive to a Roman cross

  8. and hung up to die.

  9. And die he did.

  10. After his death, his followers helped with the burial of his body in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.

  11. But then came the morning of the first day of the week.

  12. Listen to the account from Luke chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  13. On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.

  14. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

  15. But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

  16. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.

  17. In their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to the ground.

  18. But the men said to them,

  19. Then they remembered his words.

  20. When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the others.

  21. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.

  22. But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.

  23. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb.

  24. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen laying by themselves.

  25. And he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

  26. Later that same evening, Jesus appeared to his followers when they were all together.

  27. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them,

  28. Peace be with you.

  29. They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.

  30. He said to them,

  31. Why are you troubled?

  32. And why do doubts rise in your minds?

  33. Look at my hands and my feet.

  34. It is I myself.

  35. Touch me and see.

  36. A ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.

  37. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.

  38. And while they still did, they still did not believe it, because of joy and amusement.

  39. He asked them, Do you have anything here to eat?

  40. They gave him a piece of boiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence.

  41. He said to them,

  42. This is what I told you.

  43. This is what I told you while I was still with you.

  44. Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the Psalms.

  45. Then he opened their minds so that they could understand the scriptures.

  46. He told them,

  47. This is what is written.

  48. The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.

  49. And repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem.

  50. You are witnesses of these things.

  51. I am going to send you what my father has promised,

  52. but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

  53. Well, Jesus continued to appear to his disciples for a period of about 40 days.

  54. And he continued to perform signs and miracles to prove that he was alive.

  55. At the end of this period, his disciples watched as he was taken up to heaven before their very eyes.

  56. And it went like this.

  57. On one occasion while he was eating with them, he gave them this command.

  58. Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

  59. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

  60. Then they gathered around him and asked him,

  61. Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?

  62. He said to them,

  63. It is not for you to know the times or dates the father has set by his own authority,

  64. but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.

  65. And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

  66. After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes,

  67. and a cloud hid him from their sight.

  68. So the sadness and grief of Jesus' death was very quickly replaced with the triumphant joy

  69. in the hearts of all Jesus' followers who saw him alive.

  70. But 40 days later,

  71. Jesus, the risen Savior, was gone,

  72. taken up to heaven by God.

  73. And there his disciples sat in a house in Jerusalem,

  74. waiting for the promised Spirit of God to come.

  75. And come he did,

  76. just as Jesus said.

  77. The moment was spectacular.

  78. There they sat,

  79. in the room,

  80. when suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind

  81. came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

  82. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

  83. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit

  84. and began to speak in other tongues,

  85. as the Spirit enabled them.

  86. Can you imagine this?

  87. The sound of this ferocious wind.

  88. And at the same moment,

  89. this bright, glowing something.

  90. And out of that something,

  91. these licks like fire,

  92. tongues like fire,

  93. coming out and resting on each of them in the room.

  94. The Spirit of God himself

  95. came upon them.

  96. And as evidence,

  97. he enabled them to speak in other known languages.

  98. Well, at some point,

  99. they moved outside the house

  100. and these followers of Jesus

  101. begin declaring the wonders of God

  102. in many different languages,

  103. such that people from all over the Mediterranean world

  104. who had come to Jerusalem for the festival

  105. could hear and understand

  106. what they were saying in each their native tongue.

  107. And it caused quite the commotion.

  108. Many were amazed

  109. and recognized it as a sign from God,

  110. while others doubted and accused them of being drunk.

  111. The Apostle Peter stood up in this moment

  112. and he addressed the crowd

  113. that had gathered there in Jerusalem.

  114. And he first began by explaining,

  115. No, we are not drunk.

  116. It's nine o'clock in the morning.

  117. How could we be?

  118. No.

  119. And he explained to them

  120. what was really happening.

  121. that just as God had promised long ago,

  122. so now he was doing.

  123. God had poured out his Holy Spirit upon them

  124. and he was enabling them

  125. to speak prophetic words

  126. on his behalf.

  127. Now, at this point of the story,

  128. you might wonder

  129. if I've got the wrong sermon for this morning.

  130. If, I mean, it's Resurrection Sunday.

  131. This all happened 50 days after

  132. Jesus rose from the dead.

  133. But now let's consider for a moment

  134. what it was like for many of the Jews

  135. who weren't believers

  136. or followers of Jesus

  137. before this day.

  138. They knew very well about Jesus.

  139. They knew what had happened with him

  140. just over a month ago.

  141. Many of them had been at his trials.

  142. Some of them had even shouted,

  143. Crucify him.

  144. Some of them had probably witnessed

  145. and seen him dying on the cross.

  146. And everybody since then

  147. knew the stories that had been going around

  148. about how he had risen from the dead

  149. just a few days after.

  150. And the religious leaders

  151. and the Roman soldiers,

  152. they were saying that his disciples

  153. had stolen the body in the night.

  154. And the followers of Jesus were saying,

  155. No, he's alive.

  156. Some of us have seen him alive.

  157. Even as far away as Galilee in the north,

  158. reports were coming in from there

  159. that Jesus had been seen alive.

  160. Well, for those Jews who hadn't believed

  161. or followed Jesus before his death,

  162. this probably sounded and felt absurd.

  163. And where were those disciples of his now?

  164. Those 12 men who had been traveling with him

  165. all over the place.

  166. They must be sneaking around or hiding

  167. because we can't seem to find them

  168. after all this.

  169. Why don't they show their faces

  170. now that Jesus is gone?

  171. And if Jesus is alive, prove it.

  172. This is probably how many felt

  173. in the days following Jesus' death

  174. and resurrection.

  175. And now this here

  176. was the annual festival of Pentecost.

  177. And countless thousands

  178. came from all over the Mediterranean world

  179. to observe the feast.

  180. And perhaps they were also eager

  181. to catch up on what had happened

  182. since they were last there for Passover.

  183. To hear the news about this Jesus,

  184. the one called Messiah,

  185. whom some were claiming

  186. had risen from the dead.

  187. Could it be true?

  188. The rarest and greatest of all miracles.

  189. Something God only ever did

  190. in connection with a prophet.

  191. Or perhaps Jesus is the Messiah

  192. that we've all been waiting for.

  193. This may have been some of the feeling

  194. and the wonder of those days.

  195. Until finally this day of the feast

  196. when the silence was broken

  197. and Peter, one of the 12 disciples,

  198. emerged and spoke on the heels

  199. of this great sign and said this.

  200. No, we're not drunk.

  201. It's nine o'clock in the morning.

  202. How could we be?

  203. No, this is what God promised long ago.

  204. He's poured out His Spirit on us.

  205. He's enabling us to speak on His behalf.

  206. And this day God has something to say

  207. to all of you about what happened

  208. 50 days ago.

  209. Fellow Israelites,

  210. listen to this.

  211. Jesus of Nazareth

  212. was a man accredited by God

  213. to you

  214. by miracles,

  215. wonders,

  216. and signs

  217. which God did among you

  218. through Him

  219. as you yourselves know.

  220. This man was handed over to you

  221. by God's deliberate plan

  222. and foreknowledge.

  223. And you,

  224. with the help of wicked men,

  225. put Him to death

  226. by nailing Him

  227. to the cross.

  228. It's as if Peter is telling them

  229. and us

  230. that this is what really happened

  231. at Passover.

  232. Let's set the record straight.

  233. Jesus,

  234. the man from Nazareth,

  235. God Himself

  236. made it clear

  237. to all of you

  238. who Jesus was.

  239. He gave proof of it.

  240. He put His stamp

  241. of authenticity

  242. upon Jesus

  243. by performing

  244. all kinds of signs

  245. and miracles

  246. and wonders

  247. through Him.

  248. Things that only God

  249. could do.

  250. And you all know it.

  251. You witnessed it.

  252. He did these things among you.

  253. Some of you tasted

  254. in your mouths

  255. the very bread and fish

  256. that He made

  257. out of thin air.

  258. Others of you

  259. were healed

  260. or knew someone

  261. healed by Him.

  262. These things

  263. God did among you

  264. right here

  265. in your midst.

  266. You know it.

  267. You were witnesses

  268. of it.

  269. And this man,

  270. Jesus,

  271. was handed over

  272. to you.

  273. But make no mistake,

  274. this happened

  275. according to

  276. the very plan

  277. of God.

  278. God knew

  279. that it would go

  280. this way

  281. even before it did.

  282. in fact,

  283. He deliberately

  284. brought it about

  285. that it should happen

  286. this way.

  287. This man,

  288. Jesus,

  289. was handed over

  290. to you

  291. and you,

  292. with the help

  293. of wicked men,

  294. you killed Him.

  295. You put Him

  296. to death

  297. by nailing Him

  298. to the cross.

  299. Yes,

  300. Jesus,

  301. the man

  302. accredited by God

  303. Himself,

  304. did die.

  305. You put Him

  306. to death,

  307. but

  308. God

  309. raised Him

  310. from the dead,

  311. freeing Him

  312. from the agony

  313. of death

  314. because it was

  315. impossible

  316. for death

  317. to keep its hold

  318. on Him.

  319. Here it is.

  320. This is the moment

  321. where God chooses

  322. to break the silence

  323. and puts it on

  324. public record

  325. for all to hear

  326. from the lips

  327. of the official

  328. spokesperson,

  329. the Apostle Peter

  330. himself,

  331. yes,

  332. I did

  333. raise Jesus

  334. from the dead.

  335. I imagine

  336. that this was

  337. quite the moment

  338. for Peter.

  339. Peter,

  340. the man

  341. who couldn't

  342. even bring himself

  343. to admit

  344. to the servant girl

  345. at the door

  346. that he was

  347. a disciple

  348. of Jesus

  349. on the night

  350. that Jesus

  351. was betrayed.

  352. Peter,

  353. the man

  354. who had been

  355. huddling quietly

  356. in the house

  357. with the doors

  358. locked

  359. even after

  360. meeting Jesus

  361. alive for the

  362. first time.

  363. Peter,

  364. the fearful

  365. one who cared

  366. too much

  367. about what others

  368. thought of Him.

  369. Yes,

  370. I saw Jesus

  371. alive,

  372. but if I say

  373. that out loud

  374. to anybody,

  375. they're going

  376. to think

  377. I'm crazy.

  378. just like

  379. I thought

  380. the women

  381. were the day

  382. that they

  383. came running

  384. back from

  385. the tomb.

  386. But here's

  387. Peter now,

  388. and God's

  389. Spirit has

  390. come upon

  391. him with

  392. power,

  393. and he's

  394. declaring for

  395. the first

  396. time to

  397. this huge

  398. crowd in

  399. public,

  400. despite what

  401. the religious

  402. leaders may

  403. think or

  404. may do,

  405. you killed

  406. Jesus,

  407. but God

  408. raised him

  409. from the

  410. dead.

  411. dead.

  412. And Peter

  413. has some

  414. specific things

  415. to say

  416. about this

  417. to them.

  418. He says,

  419. by raising

  420. Jesus from

  421. the dead,

  422. God freed

  423. him from

  424. the agony

  425. of death.

  426. Now,

  427. this is a

  428. bit of a

  429. tricky phrase

  430. here.

  431. A very

  432. literal

  433. translation

  434. of this

  435. is given

  436. by the

  437. New King

  438. James Version.

  439. It says,

  440. whom God

  441. raised up

  442. having loosed

  443. the pains

  444. of death,

  445. or having

  446. released or

  447. set him

  448. free from

  449. the pains

  450. of death.

  451. And

  452. interestingly,

  453. that word

  454. pains is

  455. the same

  456. word that's

  457. used to

  458. describe the

  459. pains of

  460. childbirth.

  461. I thought

  462. this was

  463. surprising,

  464. and apparently

  465. there's a

  466. whole bunch

  467. of connections

  468. to the

  469. Old Testament

  470. and how

  471. this word

  472. was used.

  473. We're not

  474. going to get

  475. into that

  476. this morning.

  477. I think

  478. it's sufficient

  479. to say

  480. that Peter

  481. wants us

  482. to think

  483. of labor

  484. pains,

  485. even as

  486. we think

  487. of the

  488. end-of-life

  489. dying pains

  490. that Jesus

  491. suffered.

  492. There are

  493. similarities

  494. between them.

  495. End-of-life

  496. dying pains

  497. and labor

  498. pains.

  499. Both may

  500. come upon

  501. a person

  502. suddenly

  503. and forcefully.

  504. Both may

  505. be rhythmic

  506. and part

  507. of a

  508. drawn-out

  509. process.

  510. loss.

  511. The outcome

  512. of both

  513. is inevitable

  514. and

  515. uncontrollable.

  516. Labor

  517. pains

  518. and end-of-life

  519. dying pains,

  520. both of them

  521. take hold

  522. of you

  523. and they

  524. don't let

  525. go

  526. until the

  527. end result

  528. comes.

  529. And in the

  530. case of Jesus

  531. dying on the

  532. cross,

  533. the end result

  534. of those

  535. pains

  536. came.

  537. He died.

  538. He wasn't

  539. loosed or

  540. set free

  541. from actually

  542. dying.

  543. He did

  544. die.

  545. Yet

  546. amazingly,

  547. by God's

  548. intervention,

  549. just as labor

  550. pains lead

  551. to new

  552. life,

  553. so Jesus'

  554. dying pains

  555. led to new

  556. life for

  557. him as well

  558. because God

  559. raised him

  560. from the

  561. dead.

  562. And Peter

  563. explains this a

  564. little bit

  565. further.

  566. here.

  567. He says,

  568. God freed

  569. him from

  570. the pains

  571. of death,

  572. the agony

  573. of death,

  574. because it

  575. was impossible

  576. for death

  577. to keep

  578. its hold

  579. on him.

  580. This is the

  581. interesting part

  582. about Peter's

  583. choice of word

  584. here.

  585. Just as

  586. eventually,

  587. the pains

  588. of childbirth

  589. must give

  590. way to

  591. something good,

  592. the new

  593. life of the

  594. baby,

  595. in the same

  596. way the

  597. pains of

  598. death that

  599. Jesus suffered

  600. had to give

  601. way to

  602. something good

  603. as well,

  604. to the

  605. resurrection

  606. that God

  607. had prepared

  608. for Jesus.

  609. And I love

  610. this last

  611. phrase here

  612. in verse

  613. 24,

  614. it was

  615. impossible

  616. for death

  617. to keep

  618. its hold

  619. on him.

  620. Death is

  621. personified

  622. here as

  623. that which

  624. holds us

  625. and doesn't

  626. let go.

  627. And once

  628. it's got

  629. us,

  630. that's it.

  631. It's got

  632. us.

  633. But in the

  634. case of

  635. Jesus,

  636. Peter says

  637. it was

  638. impossible

  639. for death

  640. to keep

  641. its hold

  642. on him.

  643. As powerful

  644. as death

  645. is,

  646. God's

  647. life-giving

  648. power

  649. is greater.

  650. And so

  651. through Peter,

  652. God declares,

  653. yes,

  654. I raised

  655. Jesus back

  656. to life

  657. from the

  658. dead.

  659. I set

  660. him free

  661. from the

  662. clutches

  663. of death

  664. itself on

  665. that first

  666. day of the

  667. week,

  668. resurrection

  669. morning.

  670. God

  671. will

  672. be

  673. going to

  674. go on

  675. and he's

  676. going to

  677. add to

  678. this.

  679. He's

  680. going to

  681. speak

  682. about

  683. this

  684. shocking

  685. to many

  686. and perhaps

  687. unexpected

  688. truth that

  689. this was

  690. God's plan

  691. all along.

  692. Not just

  693. the death

  694. of Jesus,

  695. his chosen

  696. one,

  697. but also

  698. the raising

  699. of Jesus

  700. back to

  701. life from

  702. the dead.

  703. And basically

  704. in the next

  705. number of

  706. verses,

  707. to sum

  708. it up,

  709. Peter says

  710. that God

  711. hinted,

  712. God

  713. foreshadowed,

  714. God foretold

  715. that he was

  716. going to do

  717. this long

  718. ago.

  719. And what

  720. Peter does

  721. is remind

  722. the people

  723. of the

  724. words of

  725. David

  726. from Psalm

  727. 16.

  728. If you

  729. know the

  730. story of

  731. David,

  732. he lived

  733. about a

  734. thousand years

  735. before Jesus

  736. was born.

  737. And God

  738. specially

  739. chose David

  740. to be

  741. the king

  742. of Israel.

  743. And David

  744. was a

  745. musician

  746. and a

  747. songwriter.

  748. And more

  749. than that,

  750. he himself,

  751. David,

  752. was a

  753. prophet.

  754. Peter says

  755. as much

  756. in verse

  757. 30 of

  758. chapter 2

  759. in Acts,

  760. but David

  761. was a

  762. prophet.

  763. And so

  764. David's

  765. psalms

  766. and poems

  767. and songs

  768. and prayers

  769. were very

  770. special.

  771. They were

  772. his words,

  773. but by

  774. the Spirit

  775. of God

  776. speaking

  777. through David,

  778. they were

  779. also

  780. God's

  781. words.

  782. And so

  783. that's what

  784. Psalm 16

  785. is.

  786. It's a

  787. God-inspired

  788. utterance

  789. of David,

  790. a psalm,

  791. a prayer

  792. in which

  793. David was

  794. speaking to

  795. God

  796. and expressing

  797. at the same

  798. time the

  799. very words

  800. of God.

  801. And Peter

  802. wants all

  803. of his

  804. hearers

  805. in this

  806. moment

  807. in public

  808. to reflect

  809. back on

  810. Psalm 16.

  811. Now,

  812. they would

  813. have been

  814. much more

  815. familiar with

  816. this psalm

  817. in their

  818. culture and

  819. day in

  820. Israel than

  821. probably most

  822. of us are,

  823. so we're

  824. going to go

  825. back and

  826. just look at

  827. it for a

  828. couple minutes

  829. here,

  830. Psalm 16,

  831. and see

  832. what it

  833. says.

  834. I'll just

  835. read through

  836. it for us.

  837. These are

  838. David's words

  839. to God.

  840. He says,

  841. Keep me

  842. safe,

  843. my God,

  844. for in you

  845. I take

  846. refuge.

  847. I say to

  848. the Lord,

  849. you are

  850. my Lord.

  851. apart from

  852. you I

  853. have no

  854. good thing.

  855. I say of

  856. the holy

  857. people who

  858. are in

  859. the land,

  860. they are

  861. the noble

  862. ones in

  863. whom is

  864. all my

  865. delight.

  866. Those who

  867. run after

  868. other gods

  869. will suffer

  870. more and

  871. more.

  872. I will

  873. not pour

  874. out libations

  875. of blood

  876. to such

  877. gods or

  878. take up

  879. their names

  880. on my

  881. lips.

  882. Lord,

  883. you alone

  884. are my

  885. portion

  886. and my

  887. cup.

  888. You

  889. make my

  890. lot

  891. secure.

  892. The

  893. boundary

  894. lines have

  895. fallen for

  896. me in

  897. pleasant

  898. places.

  899. Surely,

  900. I have

  901. a delightful

  902. inheritance.

  903. I will

  904. praise the

  905. Lord who

  906. counsels me.

  907. Even at

  908. night,

  909. my heart

  910. instructs me.

  911. I keep

  912. my eyes

  913. always on

  914. the Lord.

  915. With

  916. him at

  917. my right

  918. hand,

  919. I will

  920. not be

  921. shaken.

  922. Therefore,

  923. my heart

  924. is glad

  925. and my

  926. tongue

  927. rejoices.

  928. My body

  929. also will

  930. rest secure

  931. because you

  932. will not

  933. abandon me

  934. to the

  935. realm of

  936. the dead.

  937. Nor will

  938. you let

  939. your faithful

  940. one see

  941. decay.

  942. You make

  943. known to

  944. me the

  945. path of

  946. life.

  947. You will

  948. fill me

  949. with joy

  950. in your

  951. presence.

  952. With

  953. eternal

  954. pleasures,

  955. at your

  956. right

  957. hand.

  958. So David

  959. had a

  960. confidence

  961. in God

  962. that his

  963. life was

  964. secure.

  965. Even though

  966. all throughout

  967. his life he

  968. was surrounded

  969. by enemies,

  970. he was able

  971. to rest.

  972. He was able

  973. to have

  974. peace.

  975. Even as

  976. his father-in-law,

  977. King Saul,

  978. hunted him

  979. all over the

  980. Judean

  981. wilderness,

  982. David knew

  983. with confidence

  984. that even if

  985. he was

  986. captured by

  987. Saul,

  988. he could

  989. not be

  990. killed.

  991. Why?

  992. Because God

  993. had chosen

  994. him to be

  995. the next

  996. king of

  997. Israel,

  998. and nothing

  999. can stand

  1000. against the

  1001. choice and

  1002. plan of

  1003. God.

  1004. But eventually,

  1005. David did

  1006. become the

  1007. king,

  1008. and he got

  1009. old,

  1010. and death

  1011. drew near

  1012. for him.

  1013. And yet here,

  1014. David expresses

  1015. something that's

  1016. quite remarkable

  1017. in this

  1018. prayer.

  1019. He says

  1020. to God,

  1021. my heart

  1022. is glad

  1023. and my

  1024. tongue

  1025. rejoices.

  1026. My body

  1027. also will

  1028. rest secure.

  1029. Why?

  1030. Because

  1031. you,

  1032. God,

  1033. will not

  1034. abandon

  1035. me to

  1036. the realm

  1037. of the

  1038. dead,

  1039. nor will

  1040. you let

  1041. your faithful

  1042. one or

  1043. your holy

  1044. one see

  1045. decay.

  1046. This is

  1047. maybe a

  1048. surprising

  1049. statement from

  1050. King David.

  1051. He expresses

  1052. this confidence

  1053. that God

  1054. will not

  1055. leave him

  1056. to stay

  1057. in the

  1058. place of

  1059. death,

  1060. the realm

  1061. of the

  1062. dead.

  1063. And we

  1064. notice,

  1065. it's not

  1066. that he'll

  1067. never go

  1068. to the

  1069. realm of

  1070. the dead,

  1071. not that

  1072. he'll never

  1073. die,

  1074. but that

  1075. God won't

  1076. abandon

  1077. him there.

  1078. He's

  1079. expressing

  1080. a hope

  1081. in God

  1082. for life

  1083. after

  1084. his death.

  1085. He's saying,

  1086. I'm happy.

  1087. my heart

  1088. is glad

  1089. because you

  1090. won't let

  1091. death have

  1092. me in

  1093. the end,

  1094. nor will

  1095. you let

  1096. your faithful

  1097. one,

  1098. your holy

  1099. one see

  1100. decay.

  1101. And so

  1102. David expresses

  1103. this confidence

  1104. in God

  1105. that God

  1106. will not

  1107. allow his

  1108. body to

  1109. decay or

  1110. to rot

  1111. in his

  1112. burial tomb.

  1113. God

  1114. will not

  1115. raise him

  1116. to

  1117. him.

  1118. He says,

  1119. you make

  1120. known to me

  1121. in your

  1122. presence,

  1123. with eternal

  1124. pleasures

  1125. at your

  1126. right hand.

  1127. What is

  1128. David saying

  1129. here?

  1130. This is what

  1131. Peter is trying

  1132. to get his

  1133. audience to

  1134. see there in

  1135. Jerusalem on

  1136. the day of

  1137. Pentecost.

  1138. David was

  1139. expressing

  1140. confidence

  1141. that God

  1142. would raise

  1143. him from

  1144. the dead.

  1145. He was

  1146. saying,

  1147. there is a

  1148. path to

  1149. life.

  1150. There is a

  1151. path to

  1152. joy in

  1153. the presence

  1154. of God.

  1155. There is a

  1156. way to get

  1157. eternal

  1158. pleasures.

  1159. That word

  1160. eternal is a

  1161. dead giveaway.

  1162. David is

  1163. thinking about

  1164. heaven,

  1165. life after

  1166. death,

  1167. and he has

  1168. this confidence

  1169. that he

  1170. himself will

  1171. enjoy good

  1172. things with

  1173. God forever.

  1174. God will

  1175. not allow

  1176. his body

  1177. to decay,

  1178. to rot

  1179. in the

  1180. grave.

  1181. He will

  1182. not leave

  1183. him for

  1184. dead after

  1185. he dies.

  1186. Now let's

  1187. look back to

  1188. what Peter

  1189. is saying.

  1190. He is

  1191. quoting

  1192. these words

  1193. of David.

  1194. Let's see

  1195. how Peter

  1196. applies these

  1197. words to

  1198. Jesus back

  1199. in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1200. chapter 2.

  1201. Peter says,

  1202. David said

  1203. about Jesus,

  1204. because I

  1205. saw the

  1206. Lord always

  1207. before me.

  1208. Because he

  1209. is at my

  1210. right hand,

  1211. I will not

  1212. be shaken.

  1213. Therefore,

  1214. my heart is

  1215. glad and my

  1216. tongue rejoices.

  1217. My body

  1218. also will

  1219. rest in hope

  1220. because you

  1221. will not

  1222. abandon me

  1223. to the realm

  1224. of the dead.

  1225. You will not

  1226. let your

  1227. Holy One

  1228. see decay.

  1229. You have

  1230. made known

  1231. to me the

  1232. paths of

  1233. life.

  1234. You will

  1235. fill me with

  1236. joy in

  1237. your

  1238. presence.

  1239. Fellow

  1240. Israelites,

  1241. I can tell

  1242. you confidently

  1243. that the

  1244. patriarch David

  1245. died and

  1246. was buried.

  1247. And his

  1248. tomb is here

  1249. to this day.

  1250. But he

  1251. was a

  1252. prophet.

  1253. And he

  1254. knew that

  1255. God had

  1256. promised him

  1257. on oath

  1258. that he

  1259. would place

  1260. one of his

  1261. descendants

  1262. on his

  1263. throne.

  1264. Seeing

  1265. what was

  1266. to come,

  1267. he spoke

  1268. of the

  1269. resurrection

  1270. of the

  1271. Messiah.

  1272. That he

  1273. was not

  1274. abandoned to

  1275. the realm

  1276. of the

  1277. dead,

  1278. nor did

  1279. his body

  1280. see decay.

  1281. God has

  1282. raised this

  1283. Jesus to

  1284. life,

  1285. and we

  1286. are all

  1287. witnesses

  1288. of it.

  1289. What is

  1290. Peter saying

  1291. here?

  1292. He's saying

  1293. that David

  1294. was not just

  1295. talking about

  1296. himself and

  1297. the confidence

  1298. that he

  1299. had that

  1300. God would

  1301. raise him

  1302. from the

  1303. dead.

  1304. He was

  1305. speaking as

  1306. a prophet

  1307. by the

  1308. Spirit of

  1309. God about

  1310. something that

  1311. was to come,

  1312. something he

  1313. saw coming.

  1314. God revealed

  1315. it to him.

  1316. David spoke

  1317. of what he

  1318. saw, and

  1319. what he saw

  1320. was the

  1321. resurrection

  1322. of the

  1323. Messiah.

  1324. A thousand

  1325. years before

  1326. it happened.

  1327. What he

  1328. saw was that

  1329. there was

  1330. coming one

  1331. of his

  1332. descendants

  1333. after him

  1334. who would

  1335. receive his

  1336. throne,

  1337. who would

  1338. die,

  1339. but who

  1340. God would

  1341. raise to

  1342. life,

  1343. whose body

  1344. would not

  1345. be allowed

  1346. even to

  1347. see decay.

  1348. David was

  1349. speaking

  1350. prophetically

  1351. about Jesus

  1352. all those

  1353. years ago,

  1354. says Peter,

  1355. which means

  1356. that God

  1357. intended and

  1358. planned all

  1359. of this

  1360. right from

  1361. the start

  1362. to raise

  1363. Jesus,

  1364. the son of

  1365. David,

  1366. back to

  1367. life.

  1368. And I love

  1369. how Peter

  1370. concludes this

  1371. section.

  1372. He just

  1373. declares it.

  1374. God has

  1375. raised this

  1376. Jesus to

  1377. life.

  1378. And we

  1379. are all

  1380. witnesses of

  1381. it.

  1382. Do you

  1383. hear how

  1384. unashamed

  1385. and bold

  1386. Peter is

  1387. in this

  1388. moment?

  1389. He puts

  1390. himself and

  1391. others forward

  1392. as eyewitnesses.

  1393. We've seen

  1394. him alive,

  1395. all of us.

  1396. Let it be

  1397. known,

  1398. let it be

  1399. heard,

  1400. God really

  1401. has raised

  1402. him from

  1403. the dead.

  1404. Now at

  1405. this point,

  1406. perhaps some

  1407. people in

  1408. the crowd

  1409. that day

  1410. were wondering,

  1411. well then

  1412. where is

  1413. Jesus right

  1414. now?

  1415. Peter's

  1416. next portion

  1417. here explains

  1418. this a little

  1419. bit.

  1420. Peter says,

  1421. exalted to

  1422. the right

  1423. hand of

  1424. God,

  1425. he has

  1426. received,

  1427. that's

  1428. Jesus,

  1429. from the

  1430. Father,

  1431. the promised

  1432. Holy Spirit

  1433. and has

  1434. poured out

  1435. what you

  1436. now see

  1437. and hear.

  1438. For David

  1439. did not

  1440. ascend to

  1441. heaven,

  1442. and yet he

  1443. said,

  1444. the Lord

  1445. said to

  1446. my Lord,

  1447. sit at

  1448. my right

  1449. hand until

  1450. I make

  1451. your enemies

  1452. a footstool

  1453. for your

  1454. feet.

  1455. Therefore,

  1456. let all

  1457. Israel be

  1458. assured of

  1459. this,

  1460. God has

  1461. made this

  1462. Jesus,

  1463. whom you

  1464. crucify,

  1465. both Lord

  1466. and Messiah.

  1467. we're not

  1468. going to

  1469. dig too

  1470. deeply

  1471. into this

  1472. piece here,

  1473. but basically

  1474. Peter is

  1475. telling them

  1476. what happened

  1477. after Jesus'

  1478. resurrection.

  1479. He's

  1480. explaining,

  1481. Jesus was

  1482. exalted,

  1483. he was

  1484. lifted up,

  1485. he ascended

  1486. to heaven,

  1487. to the

  1488. right hand

  1489. of God.

  1490. He's

  1491. telling them

  1492. that his

  1493. ascension is

  1494. proof that he

  1495. is greater

  1496. than King

  1497. David was.

  1498. It's

  1499. proof that

  1500. this descendant

  1501. of David,

  1502. Jesus,

  1503. is in

  1504. fact the

  1505. Lord of

  1506. David.

  1507. The one

  1508. whom God

  1509. will allow

  1510. to sit

  1511. at his

  1512. right hand

  1513. until he

  1514. has fully

  1515. established

  1516. his kingdom.

  1517. Peter's

  1518. saying that

  1519. God himself

  1520. has already

  1521. installed

  1522. Jesus on

  1523. the throne,

  1524. in heaven,

  1525. at his

  1526. right hand.

  1527. He has

  1528. made him

  1529. king,

  1530. he's made

  1531. him Messiah

  1532. and Lord

  1533. over all.

  1534. Well,

  1535. how do the

  1536. people respond

  1537. to this?

  1538. It seems

  1539. that God

  1540. had been

  1541. working in

  1542. their hearts

  1543. already,

  1544. even as

  1545. they were

  1546. listening to

  1547. this.

  1548. They don't

  1549. laugh at

  1550. Peter,

  1551. they don't

  1552. think that

  1553. he's crazy.

  1554. This is

  1555. their response.

  1556. Verse 37,

  1557. when the

  1558. people heard

  1559. this,

  1560. they were

  1561. cut to

  1562. the heart

  1563. and said

  1564. to Peter

  1565. and the

  1566. other

  1567. apostles,

  1568. brothers,

  1569. what shall

  1570. we do?

  1571. Peter replied,

  1572. repent and

  1573. be baptized,

  1574. every one

  1575. of you,

  1576. in the name

  1577. of Jesus

  1578. Christ for

  1579. the forgiveness

  1580. of your

  1581. sins.

  1582. And you

  1583. will receive

  1584. the gift

  1585. of the

  1586. Holy Spirit.

  1587. The promise

  1588. is for you

  1589. and for

  1590. your children

  1591. and for

  1592. all who

  1593. are far

  1594. off,

  1595. for all

  1596. whom the

  1597. Lord,

  1598. our God,

  1599. will call.

  1600. with many

  1601. other words

  1602. he warned

  1603. them and

  1604. he pleaded

  1605. with them,

  1606. save yourselves

  1607. from this

  1608. corrupt

  1609. generation.

  1610. Those who

  1611. accepted his

  1612. message were

  1613. baptized and

  1614. about 3,000

  1615. were added to

  1616. their number

  1617. that day.

  1618. So many

  1619. listened to

  1620. Peter and

  1621. believed.

  1622. They were

  1623. cut to the

  1624. heart,

  1625. it says.

  1626. The message

  1627. of Peter

  1628. struck a

  1629. chord deep

  1630. within them.

  1631. They realized

  1632. that what

  1633. Peter was

  1634. saying was

  1635. true.

  1636. That yes,

  1637. they had

  1638. done a

  1639. wicked thing.

  1640. They had

  1641. killed the

  1642. Messiah,

  1643. the one

  1644. that God

  1645. had sent.

  1646. And in

  1647. this moment

  1648. they're somewhat

  1649. at a loss

  1650. for what to

  1651. do next.

  1652. Brothers,

  1653. what shall

  1654. we do?

  1655. Amazingly,

  1656. God's

  1657. mercy and

  1658. forgiveness

  1659. is so

  1660. great that

  1661. yes,

  1662. these Jews

  1663. who had

  1664. participated

  1665. in the

  1666. murder of

  1667. his son,

  1668. God is

  1669. willing to

  1670. forgive them.

  1671. What must

  1672. they do?

  1673. Repent,

  1674. says Peter.

  1675. Turn to

  1676. God with a

  1677. contrite heart,

  1678. confess your

  1679. sin to him,

  1680. and ask for

  1681. his forgiveness.

  1682. That's what

  1683. repent means.

  1684. repent,

  1685. repent,

  1686. and be

  1687. baptized in

  1688. the name of

  1689. Jesus Christ.

  1690. Baptism is

  1691. the outward,

  1692. tangible act

  1693. that Jesus

  1694. gave his

  1695. followers to

  1696. do, which

  1697. marks their

  1698. repentance and

  1699. their belief

  1700. in him.

  1701. And the

  1702. call is to

  1703. everyone,

  1704. every person in

  1705. the crowd,

  1706. every single

  1707. one of you,

  1708. do this,

  1709. repent,

  1710. repent,

  1711. and be

  1712. baptized in

  1713. the name of

  1714. Jesus Christ

  1715. for the

  1716. forgiveness of

  1717. your sins.

  1718. And not

  1719. only that,

  1720. but you too

  1721. will receive

  1722. the gift of

  1723. the Holy Spirit.

  1724. He's not just

  1725. for us,

  1726. says Peter,

  1727. he's for

  1728. everyone,

  1729. for all who

  1730. God will

  1731. call,

  1732. for all who

  1733. will believe.

  1734. And Peter

  1735. tells us that

  1736. 3,000 people

  1737. accepted his

  1738. message and

  1739. were baptized

  1740. that day.

  1741. or Luke,

  1742. I should say

  1743. rather.

  1744. I love this

  1745. story.

  1746. Yes, it had

  1747. been 50 days

  1748. already since

  1749. the first day

  1750. of the week

  1751. when Jesus

  1752. had risen,

  1753. but it's

  1754. this day

  1755. where we

  1756. start to

  1757. see the

  1758. impact of

  1759. this glorious

  1760. reality going

  1761. public and

  1762. spreading.

  1763. No more

  1764. was this just

  1765. a wonderful,

  1766. cherished reality

  1767. that his

  1768. faithful followers

  1769. kept to

  1770. themselves behind

  1771. closed doors.

  1772. Jesus is

  1773. alive.

  1774. now they

  1775. began to

  1776. declare what

  1777. they had

  1778. witnessed to

  1779. the world.

  1780. God has

  1781. raised this

  1782. Jesus to

  1783. life and

  1784. we are all

  1785. witnesses of

  1786. it.

  1787. This is

  1788. precisely what

  1789. we're celebrating

  1790. today, over

  1791. 2,000 years

  1792. later.

  1793. Our Lord

  1794. Jesus died,

  1795. yes, to

  1796. atone for

  1797. our sins,

  1798. but God

  1799. raised him

  1800. from the

  1801. dead.

  1802. God set

  1803. him free

  1804. from the

  1805. clutches of

  1806. death.

  1807. It was

  1808. impossible for

  1809. death to

  1810. keep its

  1811. hold on

  1812. him because

  1813. Jesus is

  1814. the Son of

  1815. God.

  1816. He is

  1817. the Messiah.

  1818. He is the

  1819. King of

  1820. Kings and

  1821. the Lord of

  1822. Lords.

  1823. Right now

  1824. he's seated

  1825. on heaven's

  1826. throne at

  1827. the right

  1828. hand of

  1829. God waiting

  1830. for his

  1831. enemies to

  1832. be made a

  1833. footstool for

  1834. his feet.

  1835. It's as

  1836. true today

  1837. as it was

  1838. back then.

  1839. And through

  1840. Jesus Christ

  1841. we too

  1842. can say

  1843. with David

  1844. in confidence

  1845. therefore

  1846. my heart

  1847. is glad

  1848. and my

  1849. tongue

  1850. rejoices.

  1851. My body

  1852. also will

  1853. rest secure

  1854. because you

  1855. will not

  1856. abandon

  1857. me to

  1858. the realm

  1859. of the

  1860. dead.

  1861. nor will

  1862. you let

  1863. your faithful

  1864. one see

  1865. decay.

  1866. You make

  1867. known to

  1868. me the

  1869. path of

  1870. life.

  1871. You will

  1872. fill me

  1873. with joy

  1874. in your

  1875. presence

  1876. with eternal

  1877. pleasures

  1878. at your

  1879. right hand.

  1880. The

  1881. resurrection

  1882. of Jesus

  1883. is wonderful

  1884. all by

  1885. itself

  1886. but it's

  1887. also wonderful

  1888. in that it

  1889. opens the

  1890. way for

  1891. our

  1892. resurrection

  1893. from the

  1894. dead.

  1895. Listen

  1896. one more

  1897. time to

  1898. the words

  1899. of Jesus.

  1900. This is

  1901. what he

  1902. said on

  1903. one occasion

  1904. John 6

    John 6:40

  1905. verse 40

  1906. he said

  1907. for my

  1908. father's

  1909. will

  1910. is that

  1911. everyone

  1912. who looks

  1913. to the

  1914. son

  1915. and believes

  1916. in him

  1917. shall have

  1918. eternal

  1919. life

  1920. and I

  1921. will

  1922. raise them

  1923. up

  1924. at the

  1925. last day.

  1926. Have you

  1927. believed

  1928. this good

  1929. news

  1930. for yourself?

  1931. It's only

  1932. those who

  1933. believe in

  1934. him

  1935. that

  1936. receive

  1937. this

  1938. eternal

  1939. life.

  1940. It's

  1941. only

  1942. those

  1943. who

  1944. believe

  1945. in

  1946. him

  1947. that

  1948. will

  1949. enjoy

  1950. these

  1951. eternal

  1952. pleasures

  1953. at the

  1954. right hand

  1955. of God

  1956. forever.

  1957. Have you

  1958. been cut

  1959. to the

  1960. heart

  1961. because of

  1962. your sins

  1963. against

  1964. God?

  1965. Have you

  1966. repented?

  1967. Have you

  1968. received the

  1969. wonderful

  1970. forgiveness

  1971. forgiveness

  1972. of God

  1973. for your

  1974. sins?

  1975. Do you

  1976. believe

  1977. that God

  1978. raised Jesus

  1979. from the

  1980. dead?

  1981. If not,

  1982. I want to

  1983. extend these

  1984. words to you

  1985. today.

  1986. Repent

  1987. and be

  1988. baptized,

  1989. every one

  1990. of you,

  1991. in the name

  1992. of Jesus

  1993. Christ for

  1994. the forgiveness

  1995. of your

  1996. sins.

  1997. And if

  1998. you've done

  1999. this already,

  2000. then today

  2001. is all

  2002. for rejoicing.

  2003. Our

  2004. Savior and

  2005. our King

  2006. was raised

  2007. to life

  2008. and when

  2009. he comes,

  2010. you and

  2011. I will be

  2012. too.

  2013. Let's

  2014. pray.

  2015. Father

  2016. in heaven,

  2017. we thank

  2018. you that

  2019. even

  2020. death

  2021. could not

  2022. stop your

  2023. plan,

  2024. that you

  2025. are greater,

  2026. that you

  2027. are stronger,

  2028. that you

  2029. are the

  2030. author and

  2031. giver of

  2032. life.

  2033. Lord,

  2034. it's wonderful

  2035. to think

  2036. that Jesus'

  2037. body was

  2038. lying there

  2039. lifeless

  2040. and then

  2041. all of a

  2042. sudden,

  2043. his heart

  2044. began to

  2045. beat and

  2046. you pulled

  2047. him out

  2048. of death

  2049. back to

  2050. life.

  2051. God

  2052. and it's

  2053. awesome to

  2054. think that

  2055. one day

  2056. when he

  2057. returns,

  2058. the same

  2059. thing will

  2060. happen for

  2061. each one of

  2062. us who

  2063. believes

  2064. and that

  2065. we will

  2066. live with

  2067. you forever

  2068. in your

  2069. kingdom,

  2070. your good

  2071. kingdom.

  2072. Thank you

  2073. for the

  2074. gift of

  2075. Jesus

  2076. and thank

  2077. you that

  2078. you love

  2079. us and

  2080. forgive us

  2081. even though

  2082. we don't

  2083. deserve it

  2084. enough to

  2085. give us

  2086. all this.

  2087. We just

  2088. give you

  2089. praise and

  2090. we do it

  2091. in the name

  2092. of Jesus.

  2093. Amen.

  2094. Amen.

  2095. Amen.

  2096. Amen.

  2097. Amen.

  2098. Amen.
