  1. All right, well, we are back in 2 Timothy this morning

  2. as we take time to open up God's Word together.

  3. So if you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to 2 Timothy.

  4. And without getting into all the details,

  5. my preaching schedule for this book is all mixed up.

  6. But it's because Charles and Fred have been gracious to preach in my place

  7. a couple of Sundays so that I could focus on the annual conference

  8. with the BGC in Calgary and on sorting stuff out with purchasing a home.

  9. So we're just going to keep working our way through.

  10. We're going to be in chapter 2, verse 8 to 10 this morning.

  11. And as much as I would have liked to finish this book by the end of June,

  12. we'll just save the last chapter for this fall when I return from sabbatical.

  13. If there's one thing that I've learned in my years of being a Christian,

  14. it's that rushing through the Word of God doesn't really help us very much.

  15. So with that being said, let's pick Paul's words up here in 2 Timothy 2, verse 8.

    2 Timothy 2:8

  16. Paul writes,

  17. Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David.

  18. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering,

  19. even to the point of being chained like a criminal.

  20. But God's Word is not chained.

  21. Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the elect,

  22. that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

  23. There's only one imperative in these few verses.

  24. One command.

  25. What is it?

  26. Remember.

  27. Remember.

  28. Remember Jesus Christ.

  29. Why does the Apostle Paul even need to say this to Timothy?

  30. The guy who has traveled all over the Mediterranean world with him,

  31. countless miles, preaching about Jesus, planting churches.

  32. Why does Paul even need to say this to Timothy?

  33. He's being treated like a criminal.

  34. Because it's all too easy to forget.

  35. Remember Jesus Christ.

  36. Now, I don't think Timothy's in danger of forgetting Jesus completely or outright.

  37. But as we heard in verses 14 to 18,

  38. it's all too easy to forget that Jesus is to be our main focus

  39. and our main message and our main relationship.

  40. It's all too easy to get off track,

  41. to get distracted,

  42. to get sidetracked into other ideas and teachings.

  43. As Paul warned about in verses 14 to 18.

  44. And so Paul doesn't hesitate,

  45. even to this spiritual leader,

  46. Timothy,

  47. there in Ephesus,

  48. to simply say to him,

  49. remember Jesus Christ.

  50. Paul's not saying this because Timothy has troubles remembering things,

  51. but because Jesus is everything.

  52. He's the most important person and reality.

  53. And if we deviate from him,

  54. if we get sidetracked into something or someone else,

  55. we're missing it badly.

  56. So remember Jesus Christ.

  57. And Paul has really just two things to say about Jesus in this reminder.

  58. Two things that he wants Timothy not to forget,

  59. not to lose sight of.

  60. First thing,

  61. he was raised from the dead.

  62. Remember Jesus Christ,

  63. raised from the dead.

  64. And second thing,

  65. remember Jesus Christ,

  66. descended from David,

  67. that he is the Messiah,

  68. descended from David.

  69. But this is it,

  70. he says.

  71. This is my gospel.

  72. The word gospel means good news.

  73. This is my good news,

  74. says Paul.

  75. It's Jesus Christ,

  76. raised from the dead,

  77. descended from David.

  78. Such a short statement of the gospel here.

  79. And yet Paul says,

  80. this is my message.

  81. This news is why I'm suffering as I am.

  82. Even to the point of being chained like a criminal.

  83. Do you hear Paul's point here?

  84. He's saying,

  85. my life is on the line for this,

  86. for Jesus,

  87. the risen Christ.

  88. Nothing matters more.

  89. As we'll hear even more from Paul.

  90. He's saying,

  91. I would gladly die for this truth,

  92. this news about Jesus.

  93. And let's remember,

  94. Paul,

  95. he's in chains,

  96. like a criminal,

  97. but he hasn't done anything wrong.

  98. He's suffering,

  99. and it's because of his commitment to Jesus.

  100. And to proclaiming the good news about Jesus.

  101. Paul knows that Jesus is worth dying for.

  102. And as we can see here,

  103. he takes his faith in Jesus so seriously.

  104. Do you?

  105. Let's consider these two things about Jesus

  106. that God wants to remind us of here.

  107. First,

  108. he calls Jesus Christ.

  109. And says he is descended from David.

  110. What's the significance of this?

  111. The word Christ

  112. comes from the Greek word Christos.

  113. And it's the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word Messiah.

  114. Which means anointed one.

  115. Contrary to popular notion,

  116. Christ is not Jesus' last name.

  117. It's actually a title.

  118. And Paul makes it very clear

  119. that this is what he means

  120. when he spells it out.

  121. Referring to Jesus.

  122. Remember Jesus.

  123. Christ descended from David.

  124. Descended from David.

  125. Who is David?

  126. About a thousand years before Jesus came,

  127. David was the king of Israel.

  128. When David was just a young man,

  129. God sent the prophet Samuel

  130. to anoint him,

  131. to pour oil on his head.

  132. And that anointing signified

  133. that David was God's choice.

  134. It wasn't any man or people

  135. that chose David to be the king of Israel.

  136. It was God himself.

  137. Nobody even suspected that David would be chosen for king.

  138. He was the shepherd boy in the family of Jesse,

  139. the least of Jesse's sons.

  140. And yet we read in 1 Samuel 16

  141. about how God specifically chose David

  142. and put his spirit upon him.

  143. And it's a wonderful account

  144. of what God did there

  145. in the books of 1 and 2 Samuel.

  146. David was opposed fiercely

  147. by his father-in-law,

  148. Saul, who had the throne at the time.

  149. And Saul tried numerous times

  150. to murder David,

  151. but nothing could stand against

  152. God's choice and God's plan.

  153. And we read about how God intervened

  154. in all kinds of ways

  155. to protect David

  156. and to end the rule of Saul

  157. and to establish David

  158. as king over all his people in Israel.

  159. God described King David

  160. as a man after his own heart.

  161. It was David who wrote many of the psalms

  162. that we have in the Old Testament,

  163. the prayers and poems

  164. and songs of worship we find there.

  165. And God made a special covenant with David

  166. a set of solemn promises.

  167. And we read about this

  168. in 1 Chronicles 17.

  169. And I'm just going to read

  170. a portion of Scripture from there.

  171. I'm going to take us back

  172. into the Old Testament a little bit.

  173. And as I read this,

  174. I want to encourage you

  175. to think about David

  176. and how these words apply to David.

  177. But also, I want to encourage you

  178. to think about how this relates to Jesus,

  179. the descendant of David.

  180. Reading from 1 Chronicles,

    1 Chronicles 17 chapter mention

  181. chapter 17.

  182. After David was settled in his palace,

  183. he said to Nathan the prophet,

  184. here I am living in a house of cedar

  185. while the ark of the covenant of the Lord

  186. is under a tent.

  187. Nathan replied to David,

  188. whatever you have in mind,

  189. do it,

  190. for God is with you.

  191. But that night,

  192. the word of God came to Nathan,

  193. saying,

  194. go and tell my servant David,

  195. this is what the Lord says,

  196. you are not the one

  197. to build me a house

  198. to dwell in.

  199. I have not dwelt in a house

  200. from the day I brought Israel

  201. up out of Egypt to this day.

  202. I have moved from one tent site

  203. to another,

  204. from one dwelling place

  205. to another,

  206. wherever I have moved

  207. with all the Israelites.

  208. Did I ever say to any of their leaders

  209. whom I commanded

  210. to shepherd my people,

  211. why have you not built me

  212. a house of cedar?

  213. Now then,

  214. tell my servant David,

  215. this is what the Lord Almighty says,

  216. I took you from the pasture,

  217. from tending the flock,

  218. and appointed you ruler

  219. over my people Israel.

  220. I have been with you

  221. wherever you have gone,

  222. and I have cut off

  223. all your enemies

  224. from before you.

  225. Now I will make your name

  226. like the names

  227. of the greatest men

  228. on earth,

  229. and I will provide

  230. a place

  231. for my people Israel

  232. and will plant them

  233. so that they can have

  234. a home of their own

  235. and no longer be disturbed.

  236. Wicked people

  237. will not oppress them anymore

  238. as they did

  239. at the beginning

  240. and have done

  241. ever since the time

  242. I appointed leaders

  243. over my people Israel.

  244. I will also subdue

  245. all your enemies.

  246. I declare to you

  247. that the Lord

  248. will build a house

  249. for you.

  250. When your days are over

  251. and you go to be

  252. with your ancestors,

  253. I will raise up

  254. your offspring

  255. to succeed you.

  256. And I will establish

  257. his kingdom.

  258. He is the one

  259. who will build

  260. a house for me,

  261. and I will establish

  262. his throne forever.

  263. forever.

  264. I will be his father

  265. and he will be

  266. my son.

  267. I will never take

  268. my love away from him

  269. as I took it away

  270. from your predecessor.

  271. I will set him

  272. over my house

  273. and my kingdom

  274. forever.

  275. His throne

  276. will be established

  277. forever.

  278. forever.

  279. So what did God

  280. promise to David

  281. all those years ago?

  282. Thousand years

  283. before Christ came,

  284. he promised to raise

  285. up the offspring

  286. of David

  287. to succeed him

  288. as king.

  289. He promised to

  290. establish the kingdom

  291. of one of David's sons.

  292. He promised to

  293. establish the throne

  294. of one of his sons

  295. forever.

  296. And he said

  297. that he would be

  298. the father of this

  299. son of David

  300. and that this

  301. son of David

  302. would be his son.

  303. These are the promises

  304. God made to king David

  305. about a thousand years

  306. before Jesus was born.

  307. And there's a near

  308. and a soon

  309. fulfillment

  310. to these promises

  311. and there is a far

  312. and distant future

  313. fulfillment

  314. to these promises.

  315. Yes,

  316. God was in these promises

  317. referring to David's

  318. immediate family.

  319. One of your own sons

  320. was fulfilled

  321. in Solomon.

  322. King Solomon.

  323. He was the one

  324. who built a house

  325. for the Lord,

  326. the great temple.

  327. And so,

  328. there was this near

  329. and soon fulfillment.

  330. But there is also

  331. without a doubt

  332. a far and distant

  333. future fulfillment

  334. to these promises.

  335. Three times,

  336. God used the word

  337. forever

  338. to refer to this kingdom.

  339. The throne

  340. that would

  341. go on forever.

  342. I will establish

  343. his throne forever.

  344. I will set him

  345. over my house

  346. and my kingdom

  347. forever.

  348. His throne

  349. will be established

  350. forever.

  351. How can the throne

  352. of Solomon

  353. be established

  354. forever

  355. if Solomon

  356. does not live

  357. forever

  358. but eventually

  359. dies?

  360. So,

  361. even the way

  362. that these

  363. promises are phrased,

  364. there's something

  365. more being promised

  366. than just one son

  367. of David's

  368. immediate family

  369. to sit on the throne.

  370. what's being promised

  371. is an enduring

  372. kingdom,

  373. an everlasting

  374. dynasty.

  375. So,

  376. how would God

  377. keep this promise?

  378. Well,

  379. prior to the coming

  380. of Jesus,

  381. I mean,

  382. we might have expected

  383. that God

  384. would keep this promise

  385. just by ensuring

  386. that in every generation

  387. there is a descendant

  388. of David

  389. on the throne

  390. of Israel.

  391. and for many

  392. centuries after

  393. David,

  394. King David,

  395. there was.

  396. But as we read

  397. the Old Testament

  398. history

  399. and God's words

  400. through the prophets,

  401. we begin to see

  402. glimpses of how

  403. God intended

  404. to keep this promise

  405. that he made

  406. to David

  407. in a different way.

  408. It starts to become

  409. obvious when God

  410. deliberately reduces

  411. the once great

  412. kingdom of David

  413. and Solomon

  414. by ten tribes

  415. and then allows

  416. the northern kingdom

  417. to be conquered

  418. and many of its

  419. inhabitants to be

  420. led away into exile

  421. and then

  422. even allows

  423. the southern kingdom

  424. to be conquered,

  425. even Jerusalem

  426. to be conquered

  427. and its inhabitants

  428. led away into

  429. captivity

  430. and its king

  431. removed.

  432. And if you read

  433. through the prophets,

  434. it's quite surprising.

  435. Hundreds of years

  436. before any of this

  437. happened,

  438. God was warning

  439. the people,

  440. he was telling

  441. them,

  442. I'm going to

  443. bring disaster

  444. if you keep

  445. on this wicked

  446. course that you're

  447. on,

  448. if you do not

  449. repent and

  450. humble yourselves.

  451. And God even

  452. spells out in many

  453. of these passages

  454. in the prophets

  455. explicitly what

  456. that disaster

  457. would be.

  458. He takes all

  459. the credit

  460. for dismantling

  461. what remains

  462. of the kingdom

  463. of Israel

  464. and yet at the

  465. same time

  466. we hear in the

  467. prophets him

  468. promising to

  469. restore it

  470. someday

  471. and make it

  472. the greatest

  473. kingdom

  474. that this

  475. world has

  476. ever seen.

  477. And so this

  478. is why a

  479. thousand years

  480. after David's

  481. kingdom,

  482. the Jewish

  483. people of

  484. Israel had

  485. this expectation

  486. and anticipation

  487. of a coming

  488. Messiah,

  489. a great king

  490. of God's

  491. choosing,

  492. whom God

  493. would use to

  494. establish the

  495. kingdom again

  496. and this time

  497. permanently,

  498. this time

  499. forever.

  500. We see this

  501. anticipation and

  502. expectation all

  503. over the

  504. gospel accounts

  505. in the New

  506. Testament.

  507. We see it in

  508. John chapter 4

    John 4:25

  509. verse 25 with

  510. the woman at the

  511. well.

  512. I know that

  513. Messiah is

  514. coming, she

  515. said.

  516. He will explain

  517. everything to us.

  518. We see it when

  519. she reports back

  520. to the town,

  521. her encounter

  522. with Jesus.

  523. Could this be

  524. the Messiah?

  525. We see it a

  526. little later on

  527. in the gospel

  528. of John.

  529. The people are

  530. wondering,

  531. they're asking

  532. the question,

  533. have the

  534. authorities really

  535. concluded that

  536. he's the

  537. Messiah?

  538. When the

  539. Messiah comes,

  540. will he perform

  541. more signs

  542. than this man?

  543. Some were

  544. saying he is

  545. the Messiah.

  546. Others were

  547. saying, well,

  548. how can he

  549. come from

  550. Galilee?

  551. They were

  552. talking about

  553. where he was

  554. to come from.

  555. Does not

  556. the scripture

  557. say that

  558. the Messiah

  559. will come

  560. from David's

  561. descendants and

  562. from Bethlehem,

  563. the town where

  564. David lived?

  565. Even Jesus'

  566. opponents,

  567. Jesus said,

  568. they were

  569. expecting the

  570. Messiah.

  571. They were

  572. looking at

  573. this promise.

  574. He said,

  575. why do the

  576. teachers of

  577. the law say

  578. that the

  579. Messiah is

  580. the son of

  581. David?

  582. This was

  583. what the

  584. high priest

  585. asked Jesus.

  586. Are you

  587. the Messiah,

  588. the son of

  589. the blessed

  590. one?

  591. looking back

  592. on that

  593. promise

  594. made long

  595. ago?

  596. Even at

  597. Jesus'

  598. trial,

  599. this was

  600. at the

  601. center.

  602. He

  603. opposes

  604. payment of

  605. taxes to

  606. Caesar,

  607. the religious

  608. leader said,

  609. and claims to

  610. be Messiah.

  611. And what's the

  612. significance of

  613. that?

  614. A king.

  615. And even as

  616. Jesus hung on

  617. the cross,

  618. the people

  619. jeered and

  620. mocked.

  621. He saved

  622. others,

  623. let him

  624. save himself

  625. if he's

  626. God's

  627. Messiah,

  628. the chosen

  629. one.

  630. So there

  631. was all

  632. this

  633. anticipation

  634. and expectation

  635. that a

  636. Messiah was

  637. coming,

  638. a king of

  639. God's choosing,

  640. the great

  641. king,

  642. the one who

  643. would rule

  644. over this

  645. kingdom

  646. forever.

  647. not only

  648. do we see

  649. the anticipation

  650. though,

  651. we see all

  652. over the

  653. gospel accounts

  654. that Jesus

  655. was and

  656. is that

  657. Messiah,

  658. the king

  659. of God's

  660. choosing.

  661. We see it

  662. in the

  663. genealogies

  664. given in

  665. the gospels

  666. tracing Jesus'

  667. ancestry back

  668. to David.

  669. We see it

  670. confirmed in

  671. the census

  672. order that

  673. moved Mary

  674. and Joseph

  675. forcing them

  676. to go back

  677. to Bethlehem

  678. to the town

  679. of David

  680. to register

  681. further proving

  682. that Jesus

  683. was descended

  684. from David.

  685. We see it

  686. at the birth

  687. announcements

  688. of Christ

  689. that were

  690. made by

  691. the angels.

  692. The Lord

  693. God will

  694. give this

  695. child the

  696. throne of

  697. his father

  698. David

  699. and he

  700. will reign

  701. over Jacob's

  702. descendants

  703. forever.

  704. His kingdom

  705. will never

  706. end.

  707. We see it

  708. declared by

  709. the demons

  710. that Jesus

  711. drove out

  712. of people.

  713. Jesus

  714. rebuked the

  715. demons

  716. and wouldn't

  717. allow them

  718. to speak

  719. because they

  720. knew he

  721. was the

  722. Messiah.

  723. This was

  724. the message

  725. that Jesus

  726. declared right

  727. from the

  728. start.

  729. The time

  730. has come.

  731. The kingdom

  732. of God

  733. has come

  734. near.

  735. Repent

  736. and believe

  737. the good

  738. news.

  739. And we

  740. see it

  741. declared on

  742. the lips

  743. of the

  744. apostles

  745. and disciples

  746. who saw

  747. the miracles

  748. that Jesus

  749. was doing

  750. and believed.

  751. We have

  752. found the

  753. Messiah

  754. that is

  755. the

  756. Christ.

  757. And so

  758. this issue

  759. of whether

  760. Jesus

  761. was the

  762. Messiah,

  763. whether he

  764. was God's

  765. chosen king

  766. for Israel

  767. is at the

  768. very center

  769. of all of

  770. it.

  771. It was at

  772. the very

  773. center of

  774. what happened

  775. during the

  776. Passion

  777. Week.

  778. Remember how

  779. Jesus rode

  780. into Jerusalem

  781. on a donkey

  782. in fulfillment

  783. of that

  784. messianic

  785. prophecy in

  786. Zechariah

  787. to shouts

  788. of blessed

  789. is the

  790. king of

  791. Israel?

  792. and that

  793. he was

  794. claiming to

  795. be the

  796. Messiah

  797. was the

  798. accusation

  799. being made

  800. by the

  801. religious

  802. leaders

  803. after his

  804. arrest.

  805. It was the

  806. question

  807. Pilate asked,

  808. are you

  809. the king

  810. of the

  811. Jews?

  812. It was the

  813. thing written

  814. on the sign

  815. over his

  816. head on the

  817. cross.

  818. This is

  819. Jesus,

  820. the king

  821. of the

  822. Jews,

  823. to which

  824. the religious

  825. leaders

  826. took issue.

  827. No,

  828. write that

  829. he only

  830. claimed to

  831. be the

  832. king of

  833. the Jews.

  834. This was

  835. even

  836. symbolized

  837. in the

  838. crown of

  839. thorns

  840. that was

  841. put on

  842. his head

  843. and the

  844. purple robe

  845. that they

  846. gave him

  847. to wear

  848. as they

  849. mocked him.

  850. And that

  851. Jesus was

  852. the Messiah,

  853. the Christ,

  854. the son of

  855. David,

  856. was confirmed

  857. three days

  858. after he

  859. died when

  860. God raised

  861. him back

  862. to life

  863. from the

  864. dead.

  865. It was

  866. confirmed

  867. again 40

  868. days later

  869. when God

  870. took him

  871. up to

  872. heaven

  873. right before

  874. the eyes

  875. of his

  876. followers

  877. to sit

  878. on

  879. heaven's

  880. throne.

  881. This

  882. theme

  883. of Jesus

  884. as Christ,

  885. as Messiah,

  886. as king,

  887. is one of the

  888. central themes

  889. of the entire

  890. Bible.

  891. You can trace

  892. it right from

  893. Genesis all

  894. the way through

  895. to Revelation.

  896. God was

  897. hinting at it.

  898. He was

  899. foretelling it.

  900. He was making

  901. promises about it.

  902. He made a

  903. covenant about it

  904. for generations,

  905. adding more

  906. and more

  907. details as

  908. to what

  909. this is

  910. going to

  911. add up

  912. to and

  913. look like.

  914. And then

  915. in the

  916. New Testament

  917. we read

  918. of how

  919. he began

  920. fulfilling

  921. it,

  922. that the

  923. first coming

  924. of Jesus

  925. 2,000

  926. years ago

  927. in the

  928. first century

  929. and this

  930. forever

  931. kingdom

  932. will reach

  933. its ultimate

  934. climax

  935. when Jesus

  936. the king

  937. returns

  938. to rule

  939. and reign

  940. right here

  941. on earth

  942. someday

  943. in the

  944. future.

  945. It may

  946. seem

  947. like Paul

  948. is not

  949. saying a

  950. whole lot

  951. about Jesus

  952. here

  953. when he

  954. says

  955. remember

  956. Jesus

  957. Christ

  958. descended

  959. from David

  960. but actually

  961. he's saying

  962. so much

  963. about Jesus.

  964. He's saying

  965. yes,

  966. he is the

  967. king of

  968. God's

  969. choosing

  970. not just

  971. for Israel

  972. but for

  973. the whole

  974. world

  975. forever

  976. he is

  977. that

  978. king

  979. of

  980. kings

  981. the

  982. forever

  983. ruler

  984. of

  985. earth's

  986. last

  987. kingdom

  988. the

  989. kingdom

  990. of

  991. God

  992. who

  993. would

  994. have

  995. thought

  996. that

  997. God's

  998. plan

  999. was to

  1000. keep

  1001. this

  1002. millennia's

  1003. old

  1004. promise

  1005. made

  1006. to

  1007. David

  1008. not

  1009. by an

  1010. unbroken

  1011. succession

  1012. of

  1013. kings

  1014. but

  1015. by one

  1016. flesh

  1017. and

  1018. blood

  1019. descendant

  1020. of

  1021. David

  1022. who

  1023. was

  1024. God

  1025. himself

  1026. born

  1027. into

  1028. our

  1029. world

  1030. to

  1031. live

  1032. to

  1033. die

  1034. to

  1035. be

  1036. raised

  1037. to

  1038. life

  1039. and

  1040. as

  1041. both

  1042. God

  1043. and

  1044. man

  1045. to

  1046. live

  1047. forever

  1048. and

  1049. so

  1050. to

  1051. reign

  1052. forever

  1053. when

  1054. he

  1055. comes

  1056. back

  1057. sometimes

  1058. in the

  1059. church

  1060. we

  1061. neglect

  1062. this

  1063. part

  1064. of

  1065. the

  1066. gospel

  1067. you

  1068. know

  1069. the

  1070. atonement

  1071. part

  1072. the

  1073. part

  1074. about

  1075. Jesus

  1076. dying

  1077. on

  1078. the

  1079. cross

  1080. for

  1081. forgiveness

  1082. of

  1083. our

  1084. sins

  1085. it

  1086. makes

  1087. sense

  1088. to

  1089. us

  1090. we're

  1091. comfortable

  1092. with

  1093. that

  1094. Jesus

  1095. is

  1096. our

  1097. savior

  1098. it

  1099. makes

  1100. sense

  1101. but

  1102. Jesus

  1103. as

  1104. Christ

  1105. Jesus

  1106. is

  1107. king

  1108. as

  1109. our

  1110. messiah

  1111. of a

  1112. kingdom

  1113. that is

  1114. still

  1115. coming

  1116. this

  1117. can be

  1118. difficult

  1119. to relate

  1120. to in

  1121. our

  1122. modern

  1123. times

  1124. and in

  1125. our

  1126. different

  1127. culture

  1128. but

  1129. this

  1130. too

  1131. is

  1132. no

  1133. less

  1134. the

  1135. good

  1136. news

  1137. of

  1138. Jesus

  1139. than

  1140. the

  1141. part

  1142. about

  1143. our

  1144. forgiveness

  1145. remember

  1146. Jesus

  1147. Christ

  1148. raised

  1149. from

  1150. the

  1151. dead

  1152. descended

  1153. from

  1154. David

  1155. this

  1156. is

  1157. my

  1158. gospel

  1159. we're

  1160. not

  1161. called

  1162. to

  1163. follow

  1164. an

  1165. idea

  1166. or

  1167. just

  1168. some

  1169. historical

  1170. person

  1171. we're

  1172. called

  1173. to

  1174. believe

  1175. and

  1176. follow

  1177. and

  1178. pledge

  1179. allegiance

  1180. to

  1181. the

  1182. greatest

  1183. king

  1184. that

  1185. this

  1186. world

  1187. has

  1188. ever

  1189. seen

  1190. who

  1191. is

  1192. coming

  1193. back

  1194. soon

  1195. to

  1196. rule

  1197. and

  1198. to

  1199. reign

  1200. we're

  1201. called

  1202. to

  1203. follow

  1204. the

  1205. man

  1206. who

  1207. right

  1208. now

  1209. is

  1210. seated

  1211. on

  1212. heaven's

  1213. throne

  1214. at

  1215. the

  1216. right

  1217. hand

  1218. of

  1219. the

  1220. father

  1221. waiting

  1222. until

  1223. that

  1224. day

  1225. when

  1226. he

  1227. will

  1228. ride

  1229. down

  1230. as

  1231. king

  1232. and

  1233. take

  1234. up

  1235. his

  1236. seat

  1237. on

  1238. his

  1239. earthly

  1240. throne

  1241. and

  1242. show

  1243. this

  1244. world

  1245. what

  1246. real

  1247. righteous

  1248. leadership

  1249. and

  1250. government

  1251. looks

  1252. like

  1253. what

  1254. did

  1255. the

  1256. prophet

  1257. Isaiah

  1258. say

  1259. nearly

  1260. 2,500

  1261. years

  1262. ago

  1263. Isaiah

    Isaiah 9:6

  1264. 9

  1265. verse

  1266. 6

  1267. and

  1268. 7

  1269. for

  1270. to

  1271. us

  1272. a

  1273. child

  1274. is

  1275. born

  1276. to

  1277. us

  1278. a

  1279. son

  1280. is

  1281. given

  1282. and

  1283. the

  1284. government

  1285. will

  1286. be

  1287. on

  1288. his

  1289. shoulders

  1290. and

  1291. he

  1292. will

  1293. be

  1294. called

  1295. wonderful

  1296. counselor

  1297. mighty

  1298. God

  1299. everlasting

  1300. father

  1301. prince

  1302. of

  1303. peace

  1304. of

  1305. the

  1306. greatness

  1307. of

  1308. his

  1309. government

  1310. and

  1311. peace

  1312. there

  1313. will

  1314. be

  1315. no

  1316. end

  1317. he

  1318. will

  1319. reign

  1320. on

  1321. David's

  1322. throne

  1323. and

  1324. over

  1325. his

  1326. kingdom

  1327. establishing

  1328. and

  1329. upholding

  1330. it

  1331. with

  1332. justice

  1333. and

  1334. righteousness

  1335. from

  1336. that

  1337. time

  1338. on

  1339. and

  1340. forever

  1341. the

  1342. zeal

  1343. of

  1344. the

  1345. Lord

  1346. almighty

  1347. will

  1348. accomplish

  1349. this

  1350. Jesus

  1351. is a

  1352. king

  1353. worth

  1354. living

  1355. for

  1356. and

  1357. as

  1358. we

  1359. hear

  1360. now

  1361. in

  1362. the

  1363. words

  1364. of

  1365. Paul

  1366. Jesus

  1367. is

  1368. a

  1369. king

  1370. worth

  1371. dying

  1372. for

  1373. let's

  1374. look

  1375. for

  1376. just a

  1377. moment

  1378. at

  1379. this

  1380. second

  1381. thing

  1382. that

  1383. Paul

  1384. says

  1385. about

  1386. Jesus

  1387. here

  1388. he

  1389. says

  1390. remember

  1391. Jesus

  1392. Christ

  1393. raised

  1394. from

  1395. the

  1396. dead

  1397. raised

  1398. from

  1399. the

  1400. dead

  1401. why

  1402. didn't

  1403. Paul

  1404. say

  1405. remember

  1406. Jesus

  1407. Christ

  1408. crucified

  1409. on

  1410. the

  1411. cross

  1412. in

  1413. fact

  1414. to

  1415. the

  1416. Corinthians

  1417. Paul

  1418. summed

  1419. up the

  1420. good

  1421. news

  1422. with

  1423. that

  1424. very

  1425. language

  1426. he

  1427. said

  1428. the

  1429. message

  1430. we

  1431. preach

  1432. is

  1433. Christ

  1434. crucified

  1435. but

  1436. here

  1437. in

  1438. Paul's

  1439. summary

  1440. of the

  1441. gospel

  1442. to

  1443. Timothy

  1444. there's

  1445. no mention

  1446. of the

  1447. cross

  1448. whatsoever

  1449. it's

  1450. Jesus

  1451. Christ

  1452. raised

  1453. from

  1454. the

  1455. dead

  1456. why

  1457. does

  1458. Paul

  1459. choose

  1460. to

  1461. so

  1462. emphasize

  1463. this

  1464. particular

  1465. gospel

  1466. truth

  1467. that

  1468. Jesus

  1469. rose

  1470. from

  1471. the

  1472. dead

  1473. in

  1474. this

  1475. letter

  1476. and

  1477. I

  1478. think

  1479. it

  1480. has

  1481. everything

  1482. to

  1483. do

  1484. with

  1485. Paul's

  1486. situation

  1487. right

  1488. now

  1489. he's

  1490. at the

  1491. end

  1492. he's

  1493. on

  1494. death

  1495. row

  1496. he is

  1497. soon

  1498. to

  1499. die

  1500. and so

  1501. what's

  1502. the

  1503. remedy

  1504. to

  1505. that

  1506. it's

  1507. the

  1508. resurrection

  1509. of

  1510. Jesus

  1511. from

  1512. the

  1513. dead

  1514. it's

  1515. Jesus

  1516. promise

  1517. to give

  1518. eternal

  1519. life

  1520. in the

  1521. same

  1522. manner

  1523. to all

  1524. who believe

  1525. in his

  1526. name

  1527. the

  1528. resurrection

  1529. of

  1530. Jesus

  1531. has

  1532. become

  1533. exceedingly

  1534. precious

  1535. to

  1536. Paul

  1537. because

  1538. it

  1539. is

  1540. the

  1541. guarantee

  1542. that

  1543. Jesus

  1544. who

  1545. promised

  1546. this

  1547. everlasting

  1548. life

  1549. this

  1550. resurrection

  1551. to his

  1552. followers

  1553. can actually

  1554. deliver it

  1555. and

  1556. without

  1557. the

  1558. resurrection

  1559. of

  1560. Jesus

  1561. I

  1562. mean

  1563. what

  1564. kind

  1565. of

  1566. kingdom

  1567. would

  1568. this

  1569. be

  1570. the

  1571. promise

  1572. of the

  1573. forever

  1574. kingdom

  1575. and all

  1576. its

  1577. goodness

  1578. and all

  1579. of its

  1580. blessings

  1581. rests

  1582. on the

  1583. shoulders

  1584. of the

  1585. forever

  1586. king

  1587. who

  1588. defeated

  1589. death

  1590. and rose

  1591. to life

  1592. and will

  1593. ever

  1594. live

  1595. to reign

  1596. over

  1597. this

  1598. kingdom

  1599. of

  1600. God

  1601. and so

  1602. these

  1603. are the

  1604. two

  1605. precious

  1606. realities

  1607. of the

  1608. gospel

  1609. that Paul

  1610. wants to

  1611. remind

  1612. Timothy

  1613. of

  1614. near the

  1615. end

  1616. of his

  1617. life

  1618. Jesus

  1619. conquered

  1620. death

  1621. he is

  1622. the

  1623. long

  1624. awaited

  1625. king

  1626. of

  1627. God's

  1628. choosing

  1629. to

  1630. fulfill

  1631. all the

  1632. good

  1633. promises

  1634. God

  1635. has

  1636. made

  1637. this

  1638. is

  1639. why

  1640. I'm

  1641. suffering

  1642. as

  1643. I

  1644. am

  1645. even

  1646. to

  1647. the

  1648. point

  1649. of

  1650. being

  1651. chained

  1652. like

  1653. a

  1654. criminal

  1655. but

  1656. God's

  1657. word

  1658. is

  1659. not

  1660. chained

  1661. he

  1662. says

  1663. they

  1664. may

  1665. be

  1666. able

  1667. to

  1668. tie

  1669. me

  1670. down

  1671. and

  1672. restrain

  1673. me

  1674. but

  1675. they

  1676. can't

  1677. restrain

  1678. the

  1679. gospel

  1680. message

  1681. about

  1682. Jesus

  1683. our

  1684. Lord

  1685. it's

  1686. going

  1687. to

  1688. spread

  1689. and

  1690. it

  1691. cannot

  1692. be

  1693. stopped

  1694. verse

  1695. 10

  1696. therefore

  1697. I

  1698. endure

  1699. everything

  1700. for the

  1701. sake

  1702. of

  1703. the

  1704. elect

  1705. that

  1706. they

  1707. too

  1708. may

  1709. obtain

  1710. the

  1711. salvation

  1712. that

  1713. is

  1714. in

  1715. Christ

  1716. Jesus

  1717. with

  1718. eternal

  1719. glory

  1720. why

  1721. is

  1722. Paul

  1723. willing

  1724. to

  1725. suffer

  1726. like

  1727. he

  1728. is

  1729. and

  1730. even

  1731. die

  1732. because

  1733. through

  1734. his

  1735. preaching

  1736. the

  1737. gospel

  1738. the

  1739. people

  1740. that

  1741. God

  1742. has

  1743. chosen

  1744. will

  1745. obtain

  1746. salvation

  1747. with

  1748. eternal

  1749. glory

  1750. just

  1751. like

  1752. with

  1753. Jesus

  1754. himself

  1755. a

  1756. willingness

  1757. to

  1758. be

  1759. condemned

  1760. in

  1761. the

  1762. courts

  1763. of

  1764. man

  1765. and

  1766. die

  1767. will

  1768. bring

  1769. about

  1770. the

  1771. eternal

  1772. salvation

  1773. and

  1774. glory

  1775. of

  1776. those

  1777. who

  1778. believe

  1779. it's

  1780. like

  1781. Paul's

  1782. life

  1783. is

  1784. following

  1785. the

  1786. same

  1787. pattern

  1788. as

  1789. Jesus

  1790. by

  1791. refusing

  1792. to

  1793. be

  1794. silent

  1795. by

  1796. continuing

  1797. to

  1798. preach

  1799. this

  1800. message

  1801. of

  1802. Jesus

  1803. the

  1804. Christ

  1805. the

  1806. people

  1807. whom

  1808. God

  1809. has

  1810. chosen

  1811. will

  1812. be

  1813. saved

  1814. forever

  1815. and

  1816. though

  1817. Paul

  1818. suffers

  1819. now

  1820. and

  1821. dies

  1822. soon

  1823. after

  1824. writing

  1825. this

  1826. letter

  1827. those

  1828. who

  1829. hear

  1830. the

  1831. gospel

  1832. and

  1833. believe

  1834. it

  1835. will

  1836. be

  1837. saved

  1838. forever

  1839. they'll

  1840. come

  1841. to

  1842. enjoy

  1843. life

  1844. and

  1845. glory

  1846. with

  1847. all

  1848. the

  1849. others

  1850. whom

  1851. God

  1852. has

  1853. chosen

  1854. for

  1855. himself

  1856. it's

  1857. just

  1858. like

  1859. he's

  1860. doing

  1861. a

  1862. bit

  1863. of

  1864. a

  1865. calculation

  1866. here

  1867. like

  1868. my

  1869. temporary

  1870. suffering

  1871. my

  1872. momentary

  1873. death

  1874. because

  1875. of

  1876. my

  1877. preaching

  1878. the

  1879. gospel

  1880. of

  1881. Jesus

  1882. will

  1883. result

  1884. in

  1885. eternal

  1886. salvation

  1887. and

  1888. glorious

  1889. life

  1890. for those

  1891. who

  1892. hear

  1893. and

  1894. believe

  1895. those

  1896. whom

  1897. God

  1898. has

  1899. chosen

  1900. and

  1901. that's

  1902. a

  1903. pretty

  1904. good

  1905. trade

  1906. people

  1907. have

  1908. us

  1909. that

  1910. we don't

  1911. know

  1912. exactly

  1913. who

  1914. the

  1915. chosen

  1916. are

  1917. only

  1918. God

  1919. knows

  1920. that

  1921. but

  1922. do

  1923. we

  1924. know

  1925. that

  1926. God

  1927. intends

  1928. to

  1929. use

  1930. us

  1931. to

  1932. bring

  1933. those

  1934. he's

  1935. chosen

  1936. to

  1937. salvation

  1938. and

  1939. eternal

  1940. life

  1941. sometimes

  1942. as we

  1943. think of

  1944. these

  1945. kinds

  1946. of

  1947. conversations

  1948. with

  1949. people

  1950. I

  1951. think

  1952. we

  1953. get

  1954. stuck

  1955. wondering

  1956. what

  1957. might

  1958. I

  1959. lose

  1960. if I speak up?

1961. If I speak about Jesus,

1962. if I take the risk

1963. and talk to them about spiritual things,

  1964. what might I lose?

1965. But I pray that God would use these words

1966. to help us think differently.

1967. Not what might we lose,

1968. but what might they gain

1969. if I take up the name of Jesus,

  1970. if I speak up,

  1971. if I take a risk,

1972. if I tell them this hope that I have.

  1973. And isn't that worth

  1974. whatever scorn or insult

  1975. or ridicule or mistreatment

  1976. may come my way?

1977. Of course, not everyone we share with

  1978. will believe,

  1979. but some will.

  1980. And that's a difference of eternity

  1981. for that person.

1982. And so let us not get distracted

  1983. or sidetracked

1984. as we've been talking about this morning.

1985. Let's not get caught up,

1986. so caught up in the things of this world.

  1987. Remember Jesus,

  1988. the risen King,

1989. may this be our gospel

  1990. for which we live

1991. and if it comes to it,

  1992. for which we suffer

  1993. and die.

1994. Enduring whatever comes our way

1995. for the sake of God's chosen people

  1996. that they too

  1997. may obtain the salvation

  1998. that we have found

  1999. with eternal glory.

  2000. Let's pray.

  2001. Amen.

  2002. Amen.

  2003. Amen.

  2004. Amen.

  2005. Amen.

  2006. Amen.

  2007. Amen.

  2008. Amen.

  2009. Amen.

  2010. Amen.

  2011. Amen.

  2012. Amen.

2013. we so look forward to that day when he will return.

2014. Oh, I pray that we would live

2015. in accordance with the reality that he is right now

2016. the King of Kings who will come on that day.

2017. Do that work in us, we pray,

2018. for his honor and his name.

  2019. Amen.
