  1. Alright, so we are continuing on in 2 Timothy, and if you have your Bible, please open it up to 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  2. 2 Timothy chapter 3, and we'll be looking at the first nine verses this morning.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  3. And as we come to this part of the letter, up till this point we've been hearing the Apostle Paul giving encouragement and instruction to the younger Timothy about how he should live and about how he should lead in the church there in Ephesus.

  4. And last Sunday we heard Paul calling Timothy to live a holy life, to be set apart for honorable purposes, for the approval and the pleasure of Jesus Christ.

  5. And we saw the contrast that Paul drew there between Timothy and Hymenaeus and Philetus, these false teachers who were causing trouble.

  6. And the last thing that we heard Paul say in chapter 2, just in the last couple verses there, was that Timothy is to instruct these opponents gently in the hope that God will grant them repentance and a knowledge of the truth.

  7. And in the hope that they would come to their senses and realize how the devil's been using them.

  8. That's pretty sobering stuff.

  9. But then as we come into chapter 3, it gets even a little bit more sobering.

  10. Let me read what Paul wrote here in chapter 3.

  11. Paul writes,

  12. But mark this, there will be terrible times in the last days.

  13. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving.

  14. Slanderous, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited.

  15. Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.

  16. Having a form of godliness but denying its power.

  17. Have nothing to do with such people.

  18. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires.

  19. Always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  20. Just as Janus and Jambres oppose Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth.

  21. They are men of depraved minds who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.

  22. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

  23. Let's start at the top here.

  24. Paul says,

  25. Mark this, quite literally,

  26. Know this.

  27. That in the last days there will be terrible times.

  28. That word terrible, the word used there means troublesome or hard or difficult.

  29. So in the last days there will be difficult times.

  30. And then what follows is this lengthy description of the behaviors of people.

  31. All of what makes these times difficult has to do with the behaviors of people, or at least some of it.

  32. And before we get to looking at all of these different behaviors that are listed, let's just ask the question,

  33. What does Paul mean when he says,

  34. In the last days?

  35. When are the last days?

  36. And there's really two main views among Christians about this.

  37. View number one is that the last days refers to the period of time between Jesus' first coming and Jesus' second coming.

  38. View number one would say that we are in the last days right now,

  39. and have been since Jesus first came 2,000 years ago.

  40. Now, before you dismiss this view altogether, consider the following scriptures which refer to the last days.

  41. Think of Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost.

  42. There he stood in Jerusalem, and the Spirit was poured out on the apostles,

  43. and some of the people thought that the apostles were drunk,

  44. because they were speaking in other languages.

  45. And Paul stands up in the midst of this gathering, and he says this,

  46. Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you.

  47. Listen carefully to what I say.

  48. These people are not drunk, as you suppose.

  49. It's only nine in the morning.

  50. No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel.

  51. And then he quotes the prophet Joel.

  52. In the last days, God says,

  53. I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

  54. Your sons and daughters will prophesy.

  55. Your young men will see visions.

  56. Your old men will dream dreams.

  57. Even on my servants, both men and women,

  58. I will pour out my Spirit in those days,

  59. and they will prophesy.

  60. So what's Peter saying to the crowd that day of Pentecost, almost 2,000 years ago?

  61. He's saying that the prophecy that was made by Joel hundreds of years earlier

  62. was being fulfilled right now, that day.

  63. In other words, in some sense, they were in the last days now.

  64. And there are a few other scriptures we might look to here.

  65. Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  66. The writer there says,

  67. In the past, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets,

  68. at many times and in various ways.

  69. But in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son.

  70. And then another one in James chapter 5, verse 3.

    James 5:3

  71. James, the brother of Jesus, writing, addressing the rich people, says,

  72. You rich people, your wealth has rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.

  73. Your gold and silver are corroded.

  74. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire.

  75. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.

  76. And if you just look at the verb tense there in the context,

  77. it's James' writing as if the last days have already begun.

  78. We're in it.

  79. And so when we come to 2 Timothy chapter 3,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  80. it could be that Paul's not so specifically referring only to those things

  81. that happen at the very, very end when Jesus returns

  82. or near to when Jesus returns,

  83. but that these are the kinds of things that will happen even in Timothy's lifetime,

  84. that this whole period is the last days that we're in,

  85. the last part of the great story of God.

  86. View number two, of course, is that the last days refers only to the very distant future,

  87. to those very few days leading right up to the return of Jesus.

  88. And I'm not going to get into all the different views of the tribulation and the rapture here,

  89. but the gist of this view is that the last days is just that period right before Jesus comes.

  90. And most of those, most people who hold to this view would also say

  91. that we're right now living in the last days,

  92. that that time is very near,

  93. and probably would point to this passage in 2 Timothy as the evidence.

  94. And before we dismiss that view altogether,

  95. depending on how you read this,

  96. we could read the rest of the prophecy of Joel

  97. that Peter cited in Acts chapter 2 on the day of Pentecost.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  98. And we notice there that there's actually more to what Joel said.

  99. Not only will I pour out my spirit in the last days,

  100. but I will show wonders in the heavens above

  101. and signs on the earth below,

  102. blood and fire and billows of smoke.

  103. The sun will be turned to darkness

  104. and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

  105. So there's, excuse me,

  106. there's this great sign in the heavens

  107. which marks the beginning of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

  108. And that sign in the heavens didn't happen on the day of Pentecost.

  109. It was also spoken of by Jesus,

  110. this sign in the heavens in his sermon

  111. or his discourse in Matthew chapter 24.

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  112. It's also referred to in Revelation chapter 6,

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  113. this great sign in the heavens

  114. in connection with the final events of our world.

  115. So there's this element to Joel's prophecy.

  116. He spoke of something happening in the last days.

  117. There's a sense in which it began then,

  118. the outpouring of the Spirit,

  119. but it also speaks to the very end

  120. when Jesus comes in that great day of the Lord.

  121. I think both of these views can kind of live together.

  122. They both have good biblical support

  123. and both seem to have some truth to them.

  124. The last days seem to have begun

  125. with the coming of the last king,

  126. Jesus,

  127. who will be king of the last kingdom.

  128. And then the last days

  129. certainly seem to climax or culminate

  130. with his return

  131. and the troublesome times that lead up to that.

  132. And even as we look at this passage in 2 Timothy,

  133. there's another one in Peter.

  134. We'll skip over that one.

  135. We see that there's both future and present.

  136. But mark this,

  137. there will be terrible times

  138. or difficult times in the last days.

  139. So that's future language.

  140. People will be lovers of themselves,

  141. lovers of money,

  142. and so on and so forth.

  143. Down to verse 9.

  144. But they will not get very far.

  145. Their folly will be clear to everyone.

  146. So this is kind of the language of future.

  147. But then we also see,

  148. very clearly here,

  149. the language of the present.

  150. After listing out all the things

  151. that they will be,

  152. Paul says to Timothy,

  153. have nothing to do with such people.

  154. Which sort of implies

  155. that some of these people

  156. may begin to arise and appear

  157. even right now in Timothy's day.

  158. Now why make such a big deal over this?

  159. The last days.

  160. There are many eager to teach and preach

  161. on end times

  162. and future Bible prophecies

  163. who come to these words

  164. and they see only one main point.

  165. And the main point is usually

  166. that we are in the last days right now.

  167. The end is quite imminent,

  168. like any moment now.

  169. And how do we know?

  170. Because this is what Paul said

  171. things would be like in the last days.

  172. And look at the world that we live in today.

  173. People are like this today, are they not?

  174. Therefore we're here.

  175. We're at the brink of the very end right now.

  176. But I wonder if there isn't reason to pause here.

  177. Look at this list.

  178. These descriptions

  179. of how people will be in the last days.

  180. Is this how people have been only

  181. in the last few hundred years?

  182. Or are these things describing

  183. how people have been since Timothy's day?

  184. Let's look through this list just a little bit.

  185. Skim through it.

  186. It says people will be lovers of themselves.

  187. Hasn't that been true for the past 2,000 years?

  188. Selfishness and self-centeredness.

  189. People will be lovers of money.

  190. Is greed only a sin mainly of the 21st century?

  191. People will be boastful and proud.

  192. Is that something that we haven't really seen

  193. that much before the last couple hundred years?

  194. Has there been treachery on earth

  195. in the past 2,000 years all the way through?

  196. Yes.

  197. How about brutality?

  198. Absolutely.

  199. Has there been all these things on earth

  200. as the norm, as par for the course

  201. for the past 2,000 years?

  202. I mean, I think it just takes a quick skim through

  203. a one-volume history of the world

  204. from the time Jesus came till now

  205. to see that the answer is yes.

  206. What about verse 5?

  207. Have there been people having a form of godliness

  208. but denying its power?

  209. Having an outward appearance of religion and piety

  210. yet no real devotion to God?

  211. Well, the past 2,000 years have been full of that.

  212. We could point to the corruption

  213. of the Roman Catholic Church

  214. or the Inquisitions or the Crusades

  215. or the great schisms and kings

  216. declaring themselves head of the church

  217. so they could authorize their own immoral marriages

  218. and all kinds of things.

  219. And so actually this passage,

  220. at least in my opinion,

  221. isn't all that helpful in telling us

  222. precisely where we are on God's timeline

  223. or just how last are the days

  224. that we're in right now.

  225. Now, this warning probably rung

  226. just as true to Timothy in his day

  227. as it does to us in ours.

  228. Paul and other Christians

  229. were treated brutally.

  230. Paul was executed not long after this

  231. even though he was innocent

  232. along with most of the rest of the apostles.

  233. Nero, the emperor, rose to power

  234. right around this time

  235. and he persecuted the followers of Jesus brutally.

  236. We heard about Hymenaeus and Alexander

  237. and Philetus

  238. and we're going to hear about Demas,

  239. men who claim the name of Jesus

  240. and yet are proving to be

  241. like the description

  242. in these verses as well.

  243. My point here is that

  244. I'm not convinced that these are behaviors

  245. that specially mark

  246. only those days immediately

  247. before Christ returns.

  248. I think from this description of behaviors

  249. that we've been living in the last days

  250. since Christ came.

  251. And the purpose of this, I think then,

  252. is not to help us see and know

  253. that Christ's coming is just

  254. right about to happen,

  255. but rather to help Timothy know

  256. that these kinds of behaviors,

  257. even by self-professing believers,

  258. are to be expected

  259. in the days ahead

  260. right up till that final day.

  261. Just to say it a little more clearly,

  262. I do think that teachers and preachers

  263. should stop using this passage to say,

  264. Jesus is almost here

  265. because the world has never been

  266. as full of this stuff

  267. as it is today.

  268. Now some might say,

  269. well, isn't it reasonable to expect

  270. that the closer we get to the end,

  271. the more like this people will be?

  272. And I think that is reasonable.

  273. That's what some of the other passages

  274. that talk about the end

  275. seem to indicate.

  276. But now that still doesn't help us

  277. know exactly how close we are.

  278. Is the world very much more like this today

  279. than it was 500 years ago?

  280. Or are we just more aware

  281. of the evil going on

  282. in many different places

  283. because of the information

  284. that's available to us

  285. through online news

  286. and social media?

  287. Or another question

  288. that we might ask,

  289. as bad as things seem today,

  290. we don't like this thought,

  291. but is it possible

  292. that things may get

  293. even 10 times worse

  294. or 10 times more like this

  295. in the decades

  296. or even centuries ahead?

  297. And so I will not preach

  298. from this passage

  299. that we're right on the brink

  300. of the end.

  301. I think sometimes

  302. in our eagerness

  303. to know the future

  304. and in our anticipation

  305. for the Lord's return,

  306. which we should be anticipating,

  307. we get caught up

  308. in imagining

  309. what the future will be like

  310. and whether we're almost there

  311. and we can easily miss

  312. what this passage is saying.

  313. What was Timothy

  314. meant to understand

  315. from this?

  316. What benefit do these words

  317. have to him in his day?

  318. Is there more here

  319. than just a dark picture

  320. of the world at the end?

  321. And I think to see that,

  322. we maybe have to take

  323. our end times glasses

  324. off a little bit

  325. and really seek to see,

  326. what were you trying to say,

  327. Paul, to Timothy?

  328. What is there for him?

  329. And as we do that,

  330. I think that there's

  331. at least one key

  332. to really understanding

  333. this passage well.

  334. we could start

  335. with this question.

  336. Is this a general description

  337. of how the world will be,

  338. the people of the world will be?

  339. Or does Paul have

  340. a specific group of people

  341. in mind here?

  342. We're going to look

  343. at some of these qualities

  344. in a moment,

  345. but let's not miss,

  346. I think,

  347. the key qualities

  348. which identify these people

  349. more precisely,

  350. which narrow it down for us.

  351. These people will be

  352. all of these things,

  353. and you can see the list

  354. on the screen there.

  355. And it probably doesn't mean

  356. that every individual

  357. will have every single

  358. one of these things,

  359. but that people will have

  360. some or multiple

  361. of these behaviors.

  362. But then there's verse 5,

  363. which seems to stand apart

  364. as a truth

  365. that's representative

  366. for the whole lot of them.

  367. Whoever these people are,

  368. they seem to have this in common.

  369. Having a form of godliness,

  370. but denying its power.

  371. They have a form of godliness,

  372. but it's just a form.

  373. It's an outward appearance,

  374. a facade.

  375. And this, I think,

  376. really brings into focus

  377. who these people are

  378. that Paul is warning

  379. Timothy about.

  380. This is not about

  381. the world in general

  382. or about unbelievers

  383. in general.

  384. This is not about how,

  385. you know,

  386. so many people

  387. in our day-to-day

  388. are greedy

  389. or loveless.

  390. This is very specifically

  391. people who have

  392. a form of godliness,

  393. who claim to be religious

  394. or even confess

  395. the name of Jesus,

  396. yet who deep down inside

  397. do not love God

  398. and lack the characteristics

  399. of holiness

  400. that God's people

  401. are continually striving for.

  402. Now, is there any confirmation

  403. that this is

  404. what Paul has in mind?

  405. Well, we could look at

  406. what his instruction

  407. is to do with these people.

  408. He says,

  409. have nothing to do

  410. with such people.

  411. So are we to ignore

  412. everybody in the world

  413. because this characterizes

  414. our world,

  415. does it not?

  416. I don't think so.

  417. I think that's a little bit

  418. of the pointer

  419. that this is specifically

  420. those who claim

  421. to know Jesus,

  422. claim to know God,

  423. have a form of godliness,

  424. but it's not genuine.

  425. We could look to the second half

  426. of this passage as well.

  427. Paul says,

  428. have nothing to do

  429. with such people.

  430. And then he goes on.

  431. He says,

  432. they're the kind

  433. who worm their way

  434. into homes

  435. and gain control

  436. over gullible women

  437. who are loaded down

  438. with sins

  439. and are swayed

  440. by all kinds

  441. of evil desires.

  442. They're the kind

  443. who are always learning

  444. but never able

  445. to come to a knowledge

  446. of the truth.

  447. Just as Janus

  448. and Jambres

  449. oppose Moses,

  450. so also these teachers

  451. oppose the truth.

  452. They are men

  453. of depraved minds

  454. who as far as

  455. the faith is concerned

  456. are rejected.

  457. So the people

  458. whom Timothy

  459. is to avoid

  460. are these kind

  461. of men,

  462. the kind

  463. who weasel

  464. their way

  465. into the homes

  466. of women

  467. who are weak

  468. to their wiles.

  469. These men

  470. are infiltrators.

  471. They're pretenders.

  472. Perhaps in a manner

  473. of speaking,

  474. sneaking into the church

  475. through the back door

  476. by charming

  477. some of the women.

  478. But are they really

  479. believing brothers?

  480. It seems like

  481. they might be.

  482. They're always learning.

  483. You can imagine

  484. them sitting there

  485. in Sunday school

  486. enjoying the conversation,

  487. the discussion,

  488. eager to hear,

  489. eager to discuss,

  490. but at the end

  491. of the day

  492. never fully arriving

  493. at a knowledge

  494. of the truth.

  495. Just like

  496. Jonas and Jambres

  497. oppose Moses,

  498. so they are men

  499. who oppose

  500. or resist

  501. or set against

  502. the truth.

  503. There is a resistance

  504. to just fully

  505. embracing it.

  506. God's people

  507. and this description

  508. I think

  509. seems to confirm

  510. what we saw earlier.

  511. They are people

  512. who have a form

  513. of godliness

  514. but it's only a form.

  515. It's an outward appearance.

  516. It's a performance

  517. that they're putting on.

  518. Now who were

  519. Jonas and Jambres?

  520. What's the story

  521. with them?

  522. Well,

  523. Jonas and Jambres

  524. were never mentioned

  525. in the Old Testament

  526. by name.

  527. It's possible

  528. that they were

  529. among some

  530. of the leaders

  531. of the Israelites

  532. and that they were

  533. some of the men

  534. who opposed Moses

  535. but again,

  536. they're not mentioned

  537. by name

  538. so we don't know.

  539. There was that little

  540. dispute with Moses.

  541. Does God only speak

  542. through you

  543. or does he not

  544. speak through us also?

  545. There were some

  546. different names

  547. mentioned in that account.

  548. perhaps these were

  549. who these men are.

  550. Many scholars suggest

  551. based on the names

  552. themselves

  553. that perhaps

  554. these were the

  555. Egyptian magicians

  556. who opposed Moses

  557. when Moses went

  558. to ask Pharaoh

  559. to set the people free.

  560. They were able

  561. to do some

  562. of the same signs

  563. it says

  564. in Exodus chapter 7

    Exodus 7:3

  565. verse 3

  566. and they opposed Moses.

  567. In other words,

  568. is God really

  569. speaking through

  570. this man?

  571. No, look,

  572. we can do

  573. these things too.

  574. In either case,

  575. I think you see

  576. there's that element

  577. of religious devotion

  578. and also that element

  579. of crafty deception

  580. and opposing the one

  581. who God is really

  582. speaking through.

  583. So this I think

  584. is the key

  585. throughout this whole passage.

  586. It's not just

  587. about people in general

  588. or unbelievers

  589. in general.

  590. It seems to be

  591. very specifically

  592. about people

  593. having a form

  594. of religion

  595. having an appearance

  596. of devotion

  597. and yet it's false.

  598. If they claim

  599. the name of God

  600. or Jesus,

  601. they're imposters.

  602. If they advocate

  603. for some other cult

  604. or form of religion,

  605. they're false teachers.

  606. And it really fits

  607. well with what

  608. Paul has been saying

  609. just a minute ago

  610. to Timothy,

  611. doesn't it?

  612. What was the problem

  613. with Hymenaeus

  614. and Philetus

  615. back in chapter 2

  616. verses 17 and 18?

  617. It wasn't that

  618. they were full-blown

  619. atheists.

  620. It was that

  621. they were claiming

  622. Jesus plus this

  623. other special revelation

  624. that we've received.

  625. We know that the

  626. resurrection has

  627. already taken place.

  628. We know that

  629. eternal life

  630. in its final form

  631. is attainable

  632. right now.

  633. And they were

  634. leading people astray.

  635. And so I think

  636. what Paul is saying

  637. here is that

  638. even though Timothy

  639. is to be able

  640. to teach,

  641. even though he's

  642. to gently instruct

  643. his opponents

  644. in the hope

  645. that they will repent

  646. and come to

  647. their senses

  648. and come to

  649. a knowledge of the truth,

  650. I think what he's

  651. saying is,

  652. Timothy,

  653. know this.

  654. You can expect

  655. that many,

  656. like them,

  657. in the days ahead

  658. will not.

  659. They will not

  660. repent.

  661. this will be normal.

  662. This will be par

  663. for the course.

  664. There will be

  665. people out there,

  666. there will be people

  667. even in our midst

  668. who are advocating

  669. religious ideas

  670. and claiming

  671. to be devoted

  672. to God.

  673. They're having

  674. a form of religion

  675. but they're

  676. not people

  677. who love God.

  678. And even though

  679. they're gently instructed

  680. and the truth

  681. is shared with them

  682. and they love

  683. to talk about it

  684. and seem like

  685. they're learning,

  686. they will often

  687. oppose,

  688. they will often

  689. resist it.

  690. They will continue

  691. teaching falsehood.

  692. They will continue

  693. living wickedly.

  694. This is what's

  695. going to make

  696. the days ahead

  697. difficult

  698. and troublesome.

  699. One of the things

  700. I noticed

  701. in this list

  702. is just how often

  703. the word love

  704. appears.

  705. People will be

  706. lovers of themselves,

  707. lovers of money.

  708. They'll be without love,

  709. not lovers of the good.

  710. They'll be lovers

  711. lovers of pleasure

  712. rather than

  713. lovers of God.

  714. There's at least

  715. two problems here

  716. with these

  717. religious pretenders.

  718. Love is misdirected

  719. into all these

  720. various things

  721. and also the problem

  722. that love is just

  723. lacking.

  724. Love is misdirected

  725. and love is

  726. lacking.

  727. That's one of the

  728. markers of these

  729. religious pretenders.

  730. They're caught up

  731. in loving the wrong

  732. things.

  733. Loving themselves.

  734. This word

  735. essentially means

  736. selfish.

  737. They just care

  738. mainly about

  739. themselves and

  740. prioritize themselves

  741. above all others.

  742. And they're lovers

  743. of money.

  744. He says,

  745. they cherish money

  746. and the things

  747. it buys.

  748. This is just a

  749. reference to greed.

  750. In fact,

  751. this is probably

  752. one of the easiest

  753. marks of a false

  754. teacher to identify

  755. is a love of money.

  756. The prosperity

  757. preachers of our

  758. day do their best

  759. to hide their

  760. love of money

  761. but it's just

  762. obvious to those

  763. of us who are

  764. true followers

  765. of Jesus.

  766. Why is it that

  767. the TV prosperity

  768. preacher always

  769. ends their episode

  770. or broadcast

  771. with a plea

  772. to support the

  773. ministry financially

  774. and a promise

  775. that God will

  776. bless you if you

  777. do and on and

  778. on and we'll

  779. throw in a free

  780. gift.

  781. And if you

  782. don't give,

  783. if you don't

  784. tithe,

  785. God won't

  786. prosper you.

  787. Don't expect

  788. him to heal

  789. you if you

  790. don't first

  791. sow your

  792. seed of faith

  793. by writing

  794. that check.

  795. They will be

  796. lovers of

  797. money.

  798. And love

  799. is often

  800. misdirected

  801. towards pleasure.

  802. These religious

  803. imposters

  804. will be

  805. lovers of

  806. pleasure

  807. rather than

  808. lovers of

  809. God.

  810. Notice the

  811. contrast here.

  812. Lovers of

  813. pleasure

  814. rather than

  815. lovers of

  816. God.

  817. So it's

  818. not that

  819. they're,

  820. you know,

  821. it's not that

  822. they're just

  823. trying to enjoy

  824. the many

  825. God-given

  826. pleasures of

  827. life,

  828. the good

  829. ones.

  830. No,

  831. they love

  832. pleasure

  833. rather than

  834. loving God.

  835. They are

  836. hedonists.

  837. They're living

  838. for pleasure.

  839. They're just

  840. living to

  841. scratch the

  842. itch of

  843. the flesh

  844. and its

  845. desires,

  846. whatever it

  847. may be.

  848. It doesn't

  849. matter if

  850. the pleasure

  851. is illicit

  852. or immoral.

  853. They'll go

  854. for that

  855. too because

  856. they love

  857. pleasure and

  858. they do

  859. not love

  860. God.

  861. Many of

  862. us were

  863. shocked to

  864. hear in

  865. the past

  866. few years

  867. the full

  868. evidence and

  869. report of

  870. Ravi Zacharias.

  871. Even though

  872. he was a

  873. very prominent

  874. pastor and

  875. ministry leader,

  876. it came out,

  877. came to

  878. light that

  879. he'd been

  880. concealing a

  881. long-term

  882. life of

  883. sexually immoral

  884. behavior,

  885. preying

  886. upon all

  887. kinds of

  888. women,

  889. engaged in

  890. countless

  891. acts of

  892. sexual

  893. immorality.

  894. You can

  895. read the

  896. full report

  897. on Christianity

  898. today.

  899. These were

  900. not occasional

  901. falls into

  902. temptation,

  903. which he

  904. repented of.

  905. He was

  906. constantly,

  907. continually

  908. through this

  909. period,

  910. manipulating

  911. and coercing

  912. women.

  913. He was

  914. making threats

  915. about what

  916. would happen

  917. to them

  918. spiritually if

  919. they didn't

  920. comply with

  921. what he

  922. wanted.

  923. It was

  924. heartbreaking

  925. to read

  926. this.

  927. Notice in

  928. verse 6,

  929. they are

  930. the kind

  931. who are

  932. opportunistically

  933. taking advantage

  934. of women.

  935. It's one of

  936. the marks of

  937. these religious

  938. pretenders.

  939. So we see

  940. these variety

  941. of misdirected

  942. loves.

  943. They will be

  944. marked by

  945. these misdirected

  946. loves.

  947. And we

  948. notice also

  949. that they'll

  950. just be

  951. straight up

  952. people without

  953. love.

  954. See that in

  955. verse 3.

  956. They will be

  957. without love.

  958. They'll be

  959. lacking in

  960. concern for

  961. others.

  962. Cold,

  963. hard,

  964. indifferent.

  965. That's pretty

  966. obvious in

  967. the way that

  968. he was

  969. treating those

  970. women.

  971. How could

  972. you do

  973. that?

  974. Paul says

  975. they will

  976. not be

  977. lovers of

  978. the good.

  979. That's kind

  980. of a funny

  981. phrase in

  982. our language.

  983. It's kind

  984. of the word

  985. good-loving,

  986. but then he

  987. negates it by

  988. putting the

  989. negative particle

  990. on the front.

  991. So they're

  992. like un-good-loving.

  993. They're not

  994. people who

  995. love what

  996. is good.

  997. They're not

  998. generous.

  999. They're not

  1000. caring about

  1001. the common

  1002. good or

  1003. the public

  1004. good of

  1005. others.

  1006. Again, a

  1007. lack of

  1008. love.

  1009. They'll be

  1010. unforgiving,

  1011. he says.

  1012. A loving

  1013. person forgives.

  1014. A loving

  1015. person releases

  1016. another person

  1017. from the

  1018. debt that

  1019. they owe

  1020. you or the

  1021. wrongs they've

  1022. done to you,

  1023. just as Jesus

  1024. has done for

  1025. us.

  1026. But a

  1027. person who

  1028. lacks love,

  1029. they hold a

  1030. grudge bitterly.

  1031. They refuse to

  1032. forgive a

  1033. wrong despite

  1034. the many

  1035. wrongs that

  1036. they've done

  1037. to others.

  1038. And ultimately,

  1039. I think we see

  1040. here at the

  1041. bottom, the

  1042. biggest problem,

  1043. the massive

  1044. problem here is

  1045. that a love

  1046. for God is

  1047. what is lacking.

  1048. Lovers of

  1049. pleasure rather

  1050. than lovers

  1051. of God.

  1052. They don't

  1053. love God.

  1054. I mean,

  1055. that's shocking

  1056. to read right

  1057. beside having

  1058. a form of

  1059. godliness.

  1060. Having a

  1061. form of

  1062. godliness,

  1063. but they

  1064. don't love

  1065. God.

  1066. So there's a

  1067. variety of

  1068. bad fruit that

  1069. we see that

  1070. will be normal

  1071. in the lives

  1072. of these people

  1073. who have a

  1074. form of

  1075. godliness,

  1076. but deny

  1077. its power.

  1078. We see the

  1079. misdirected

  1080. loves,

  1081. we see the

  1082. lack of

  1083. loves,

  1084. we see in

  1085. some cases

  1086. that they'll

  1087. just be

  1088. straight up

  1089. brutal.

  1090. Brutal,

  1091. slanderous,

  1092. treacherous,

  1093. disloyal.

  1094. And we

  1095. only need to

  1096. look back in

  1097. history to

  1098. see how this

  1099. has happened

  1100. in the name

  1101. of God,

  1102. in the name

  1103. of Jesus.

  1104. Things like

  1105. the Crusades.

  1106. Timothy,

  1107. these kinds

  1108. of people,

  1109. you need to

  1110. avoid them.

  1111. Have nothing

  1112. to do with

  1113. them.

  1114. Turn away

  1115. from them.

  1116. If they

  1117. don't respond

  1118. to that

  1119. gentle

  1120. instruction

  1121. with repentance,

  1122. if they

  1123. persist in

  1124. living wicked

  1125. lives like

  1126. this,

  1127. avoid them.

  1128. They're going

  1129. to cause

  1130. hurt and

  1131. harm to

  1132. others.

  1133. They oppose

  1134. the truth.

  1135. They are

  1136. men of

  1137. depraved

  1138. minds.

  1139. And as

  1140. far as

  1141. the faith

  1142. is concerned,

  1143. Paul says,

  1144. they're

  1145. rejected by

  1146. God.

  1147. Turn away

  1148. from them.

  1149. I think

  1150. verse 9

  1151. is especially

  1152. helpful for

  1153. us knowing

  1154. why Paul is

  1155. sharing all

  1156. this with

  1157. Timothy.

  1158. In verse 9

  1159. he says,

  1160. but they

  1161. will not

  1162. get very

  1163. far,

  1164. because as

  1165. in the

  1166. case of

  1167. those men,

  1168. their folly

  1169. will be

  1170. clear to

  1171. everyone.

  1172. So in

  1173. the long

  1174. run,

  1175. in the

  1176. grand scheme

  1177. of things,

  1178. don't worry

  1179. about these

  1180. kinds of

  1181. people,

  1182. these religious

  1183. pretenders.

  1184. They may

  1185. have some

  1186. momentum at

  1187. the moment.

  1188. They may

  1189. gain some

  1190. following,

  1191. their teaching

  1192. may spread,

  1193. but they

  1194. will not

  1195. get very

  1196. far,

  1197. because their

  1198. folly will

  1199. be clear to

  1200. everyone.

  1201. This is the

  1202. good news when

  1203. it comes to

  1204. false teachers

  1205. and religious

  1206. pretenders.

  1207. Eventually the

  1208. truth comes

  1209. out, and

  1210. all who belong

  1211. to the Lord

  1212. truly and

  1213. believe in

  1214. his name

  1215. will see

  1216. clearly that

  1217. religious

  1218. pretenders

  1219. and false

  1220. teachers are

  1221. not true

  1222. brothers and

  1223. sisters in

  1224. the Lord.

  1225. The fruit

  1226. that's being

  1227. produced as

  1228. the norm

  1229. in their

  1230. lives betrays

  1231. their profession.

  1232. And that's

  1233. why I think

  1234. Paul writes

  1235. all this to

  1236. Timothy.

  1237. It's so that

  1238. he and

  1239. us might

  1240. know what

  1241. are the

  1242. marks of

  1243. religious

  1244. pretenders and

  1245. false teachers.

  1246. Just as

  1247. Paul said

  1248. earlier in

  1249. the letter

  1250. after naming

  1251. Hymenaeus and

  1252. Philetus back

  1253. in chapter 2

  1254. verse 19,

  1255. everyone who

  1256. confesses the

  1257. name of the

  1258. Lord must

  1259. turn away

  1260. from wickedness.

  1261. Paul's saying,

  1262. Timothy, there's

  1263. going to be

  1264. more like

  1265. Hymenaeus and

  1266. Philetus in

  1267. the days ahead.

  1268. What you're

  1269. seeing now is

  1270. going to happen

  1271. a lot.

  1272. People will be

  1273. having that

  1274. outward appearance

  1275. of godliness,

  1276. but you'll know

  1277. that they're

  1278. imposters and

  1279. pretenders and

  1280. crafty deceivers

  1281. because they

  1282. will be those

  1283. who confess the

  1284. name of the

  1285. Lord, yet do

  1286. not turn away

  1287. from wickedness.

  1288. people who

  1289. live in all

  1290. manner of

  1291. sin.

  1292. Ultimately, you'll

  1293. know that

  1294. they're imposters.

  1295. You'll know that

  1296. they're pretenders

  1297. because you'll see

  1298. the foolish and

  1299. sinful attitudes and

  1300. behaviors that mark

  1301. their ways.

  1302. It'll be obvious.

  1303. The truth will

  1304. come out.

  1305. Then when you go

  1306. and bring that

  1307. gentle correction or

  1308. instruction to bear

  1309. on them, they will

  1310. resist it.

  1311. They will oppose

  1312. it.

  1313. They won't

  1314. respond.

  1315. They won't

  1316. change.

  1317. And so you, for

  1318. your part, at that

  1319. point, must turn

  1320. away from them and

  1321. have nothing to do

  1322. with them.

  1323. And so I believe

  1324. this passage is

  1325. here not so much

  1326. to help us discern

  1327. the times in which

  1328. we live, but to

  1329. help us discern

  1330. the people, the

  1331. teachers, the

  1332. influencers in

  1333. our day.

  1334. Are they

  1335. genuine or are

  1336. they imposters?

  1337. Finally, these

  1338. words are a good

  1339. reminder of how

  1340. we are to be

  1341. different as true

  1342. followers of Jesus,

1343. of how we're to be

  1344. set apart and

  1345. holy.

  1346. I mean, look at

  1347. this list, these

  1348. descriptions.

  1349. It's an awful

  1350. description, but now

  1351. flip them the other

  1352. way around.

  1353. This is what the

  1354. true follower of

  1355. Jesus looks like.

  1356. Not a lover of

  1357. themselves, but

  1358. lover of others.

  1359. Not a lover of

  1360. money.

  1361. Greedy, but

  1362. content.

  1363. Not boastful and

  1364. proud, but humble.

  1365. Not ungrateful, but

  1366. grateful.

  1367. Obeying their

  1368. parents.

  1369. Holy, loving,

  1370. forgiving, speaking

  1371. the truth about

  1372. others.

  1373. Self-controlled,

  1374. gentle, loving

  1375. what is good.

  1376. Loyal, and

  1377. ultimately at the

  1378. bottom there, loving

  1379. God more than

  1380. anything else.

  1381. may the Lord work

  1382. powerfully within

  1383. us to make this

  1384. so in our lives.

  1385. Let's pray.

  1386. Father, we thank

  1387. you for this

  1388. sobering warning,

  1389. and we know that

  1390. you're coming.

  1391. We know, Jesus, that

  1392. your return is soon.

1393. You said so in your

  1394. word.

  1395. Lord, we do look

  1396. out at our world

  1397. with alarm, and

  1398. it is hard to

  1399. live in a world

  1400. that is full of

  1401. these things, and

  1402. we know that

  1403. before we came to

  1404. know you and

  1405. believe in your

  1406. name and were

  1407. saved, we

  1408. participated.

  1409. And so we

  1410. thank you for the

  1411. encouragement and

  1412. assurance you give

  1413. us.

  1414. We thank you that

  1415. at the end of

  1416. everything, those

  1417. that you have

  1418. called and chosen

  1419. will not be

  1420. ultimately led

  1421. astray and

  1422. deceived and

  1423. missed the way.

  1424. So long as we

  1425. keep our eyes on

  1426. you, Jesus, and

  1427. we ask that you'd

  1428. help us to do

  1429. that, to stay

  1430. fixed on you, to

  1431. love you more

  1432. than anything else,

  1433. more than life

  1434. itself.

  1435. Do that in us,

  1436. we pray, and show

  1437. through us your

  1438. goodness and your

  1439. grace to the world.

  1440. In Jesus' name,

  1441. amen.
