  1. All right, we're continuing on through the letter that Paul wrote to Timothy, the second one.

  2. So please open your Bibles up to 2 Timothy.

  3. We're in chapter 3, and as you flip open, let me just remind us what's going on here.

  4. Paul is writing this letter from prison.

  5. He's writing it to Timothy, who has been a leader in the church in Ephesus,

  6. a city in the province of Asia, which is now modern-day Turkey.

  7. And the tone of this whole letter has been encouragement and instruction and warning.

  8. If we look just back over the last chapter, chapter 2,

  9. we see that Paul has been encouraging Timothy to continue in the cause of Christ,

  10. no matter how difficult things get.

  11. Serve like a soldier, he said.

  12. Run like an athlete to win.

  13. Work like a hard-working farmer.

  14. And Paul reminded Timothy, just in the last chapter, about the gospel,

  15. emphasizing the kingship of Jesus

  16. and the eternal life and glory that await those who believe in him.

  17. And then as we continued on in chapter 2,

  18. we saw Paul encouraging Timothy to live a holy life,

  19. to set himself specially apart for the honorable purposes of God.

  20. In contrast to how some of those false teachers were doing,

  21. they were giving themselves to the dishonorable purposes of the devil, said Paul.

  22. Last Sunday, we heard Paul warning Timothy about how things would be difficult in the days ahead.

  23. How these last days, this last part of God's great story from Timothy's day until the end

  24. will be characterized by religious pretenders and false teachers

  25. and depraved infiltrators who claim to know God

  26. and have an outward form of godliness

  27. but can be recognized as false by their persistent sinful attitudes and behaviors.

  28. Their love of themselves.

  29. Their love of money.

  30. Their love of pleasure rather than God.

  31. And these kinds of people, if they do not respond to gentle instruction with repentance,

  32. Paul says we're to avoid and to have nothing to do with them.

  33. Well, now as we come to verses 10 to 15 this morning,

  34. we see Paul now contrast himself with these false teachers and influencers.

  35. So if the point of what we heard last Sunday in verses 1 to 9

  36. was to help Timothy identify religious pretenders and false teachers.

  37. The point of these next verses that we're looking at this morning

  38. is to assure Timothy of who he can trust

  39. and how he can be confident that his faith is well placed.

  40. And so let me just read the passage for us here in 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  41. And I'm just going to start it up in verse 8

  42. and we'll read right down to the end of 15.

  43. Just as Janus and Jambras oppose Moses,

  44. so also these teachers oppose the truth.

  45. They are men of depraved minds who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.

  46. But they will not get very far,

  47. because as in the case of those men,

  48. their folly will be clear to everyone.

  49. You, however, know all about my teaching,

  50. my way of life,

  51. my purpose,

  52. faith,

  53. patience,

  54. love,

  55. endurance,

  56. persecutions,

  57. sufferings.

  58. What kinds of things happened to me in Antioch,

  59. Iconium, and Lystra?

  60. The persecutions I endured.

  61. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.

  62. In fact,

  63. everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus

  64. will be persecuted,

  65. while evildoers and imposters will go from bad to worse,

  66. deceiving and being deceived.

  67. But as for you,

  68. continue in what you have learned

  69. and have become convinced of,

  70. because you know those from whom you learned it,

  71. and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures,

  72. which are able to make you wise for salvation

  73. through faith in Christ Jesus.

  74. So what is Paul doing here?

  75. Paul is reminding Timothy

  76. of why he,

  77. as an apostle of Christ Jesus,

  78. can be trusted.

  79. He's saying,

  80. Timothy,

  81. unlike these false teachers

  82. and religious pretenders

  83. who are claiming to have revelation from God

  84. and to speak for God,

  85. you can trust me.

  86. You know me,

  87. me,

  88. Timothy.

  89. Quite literally,

  90. you have closely followed my teaching,

  91. my way of life,

  92. my purpose.

  93. And Paul lists nine things from his life.

  94. This phrase here,

  95. it's a little different translation on screen,

  96. but literally,

  97. you have closely followed.

  98. The sense of this is not like

  99. how we might closely follow,

  100. you know,

  101. a story in the news

  102. from a distance.

  103. The verb that's used here,

  104. the context here,

  105. it implies a much closer kind of following.

  106. It implies

  107. intimate knowledge.

  108. Timothy,

  109. you were there.

  110. You were with me.

  111. Timothy was there himself

  112. when Paul first came through his town.

  113. He heard Paul's teaching firsthand.

  114. And then later on,

  115. he traveled with Paul

  116. and worked together with him.

  117. And so not only does he know

  118. the teaching of Paul,

  119. but he knows Paul's character.

  120. He knows Paul's attitudes

  121. and his conduct.

  122. You closely followed my way of life,

  123. says Paul.

  124. You know that my living

  125. matches my confession.

  126. You know my purpose,

  127. he says.

  128. Timothy,

  129. you know the reasons

  130. why I've been doing

  131. all that I've been doing.

  132. You've witnessed firsthand

  133. my faith,

  134. says Paul.

  135. Why was Paul doing all that he did

  136. in the cause of Christ?

  137. It was because he believed

  138. that Jesus really is the Christ.

  139. And Timothy,

  140. you've seen that in my life.

  141. You've seen it.

  142. You know it.

  143. He says,

  144. you've seen and known

  145. my patience,

  146. my love,

  147. and my endurance.

  148. This is the big difference

  149. between Paul

  150. and the false teachers

  151. and the religious pretenders

  152. mentioned above.

  153. If you glance back up

  154. to verse 3 of chapter 3,

  155. people will be

  156. lovers of themselves,

  157. lovers of money.

  158. They'll be without love,

  159. said Paul.

  160. Without love,

  161. lacking love.

  162. But Timothy,

  163. you've seen firsthand

  164. my genuine love

  165. and concern for you

  166. and for others.

  167. You've seen the patience

  168. that I've had towards

  169. all kinds of difficult people

  170. and how I've borne with them.

  171. Enduring all kinds of things

  172. for the sake of Christ

  173. and his good news.

  174. Timothy,

  175. you have seen

  176. and you have known

  177. my persecutions

  178. and sufferings.

  179. Paul really belabors

  180. this point.

  181. He expands on it.

  182. He says,

  183. what kinds of things

  184. happened to me

  185. in Antioch,

  186. Iconium,

  187. and Lystra,

  188. the persecutions

  189. I endured.

  190. And we notice there

  191. that he's very specific

  192. about three spots

  193. where Paul was persecuted.

  194. Antioch,

  195. Iconium,

  196. and Lystra.

  197. What's the significance

  198. of these three locations?

  199. All of these are places

  200. in Timothy's home region

  201. that are fairly near

  202. to each other.

  203. Antioch was a city

  204. where the Jews

  205. became angry

  206. that Paul was preaching

  207. the gospel

  208. to the Gentiles.

  209. And so they began

  210. in that city

  211. to contradict Paul

  212. and it says

  213. to heap abuse on him

  214. and incite the leaders

  215. of the city

  216. against Paul

  217. and Barnabas

  218. until they had

  219. basically expelled him

  220. from the area.

  221. So what did Paul do?

  222. Well,

  223. he carried on

  224. to the next city

  225. just down the road,

  226. Iconium.

  227. And Paul proclaimed

  228. Jesus there.

  229. And some of both

  230. the Jews

  231. and the Gentiles

  232. there in that city

  233. were plotting

  234. against Paul

  235. to mistreat him

  236. and to stone him,

  237. it says in the book of Acts.

  238. Paul escaped

  239. just in time.

  240. What did he do?

  241. He went down the road

  242. to the next city,

  243. Lystra.

  244. And in Lystra,

  245. Paul performed

  246. a miraculous healing.

  247. And the people there

  248. began,

  249. they became confused

  250. and they started

  251. trying to worship

  252. Paul and Barnabas.

  253. It says in the book of Acts

  254. that they thought

  255. Paul and Barnabas

  256. might be the Greek gods

  257. Zeus and Hermes.

  258. It was kind of

  259. a kerfuffle there.

  260. And then in the midst

  261. of all that,

  262. the Jews from Antioch

  263. and Iconium arrived

  264. and they won

  265. the whole crowd over

  266. and they stoned

  267. Paul,

  268. so hurling rocks

  269. at him violently,

  270. they dragged him

  271. outside the city

  272. and they left him

  273. for dead.

  274. You can read all of this

  275. in the book of Acts

  276. or at least they thought

  277. he was dead.

  278. What's the significance

  279. of this?

  280. Well, Lystra

  281. is the town

  282. that Timothy was from.

  283. That was his hometown.

  284. That's why Paul's

  285. reminding Timothy

  286. of these locations

  287. because Timothy,

  288. you were there.

  289. you saw how

  290. they treated me.

  291. You saw how

  292. they persecuted me.

  293. You saw how

  294. I suffered.

  295. Reflecting back

  296. on all that persecution

  297. and suffering,

  298. this is what Paul says.

  299. He says,

  300. yet the Lord

  301. rescued me

  302. from all of them.

  303. All my persecutions,

  304. all my sufferings,

  305. up until this day,

  306. the Lord

  307. has rescued me

  308. from all of them.

  309. Not that Jesus

  310. kept him

  311. from suffering

  312. or being persecuted,

  313. but that

  314. from out of the midst

  315. of that persecution

  316. and suffering,

  317. he rescued me.

  318. He delivered me.

  319. And Paul sort of

  320. takes a step back here

  321. to make a point.

  322. Verse 12 and 13,

  323. he says,

  324. in fact,

  325. everyone who wants

  326. to live

  327. a godly life

  328. in Christ Jesus

  329. will be persecuted.

  330. While evildoers

  331. and imposters

  332. will go from bad

  333. to worse,

  334. deceiving

  335. and being deceived.

  336. And there's a lot here.

  337. A general truth,

  338. a general principle

  339. of the Christian life

  340. for all followers

  341. of Jesus

  342. is that we will

  343. be persecuted.

  344. We will be opposed.

  345. And we kind of notice

  346. a contrast

  347. in this verse.

  348. There's those

  349. who want to live

  350. a godly life

  351. in Christ Jesus

  352. and then there's

  353. the evildoers

  354. and imposters.

  355. They kind of share,

  356. at least in the moment,

  357. a different course.

  358. The Christ followers

  359. will be persecuted,

  360. he says.

  361. But somehow

  362. the imposters,

  363. they seem to avoid that,

  364. at least for the time.

  365. I think Paul's

  366. making the point

  367. that persecution

  368. and suffering

  369. are marks

  370. or are evidences

  371. of true faith

  372. in Jesus.

  373. Paul wants Timothy

  374. to remember

  375. his sufferings

  376. and his persecutions

  377. because they are evidence

  378. that his faith

  379. in Jesus

  380. is genuine.

  381. Why?

  382. Because people

  383. generally

  384. won't choose

  385. to suffer

  386. or even to die

  387. for what they know

  388. is a lie

  389. or for something

  390. that they don't

  391. even really believe in.

  392. Kind of believe it

  393. but not really.

  394. They won't suffer

  395. for that.

  396. What are the marks

  397. of the false teachers

  398. and the imposters?

  399. Well,

  400. if we just glance

  401. back up to verse 4,

  402. we see that they're

  403. lovers of pleasure

  404. rather than lovers

  405. of God.

  406. They'll take

  407. the easy road,

  408. the comfortable road,

  409. the path

  410. of least resistance.

  411. Pleasure

  412. and persecutions

  413. are like opposites

  414. here.

  415. they love pleasure,

  416. they love comfort

  417. and so when the moment

  418. of decision comes,

  419. they're not going to choose

  420. to suffer for the name

  421. of Christ.

  422. But Timothy,

  423. you know that I was willing

  424. to give up all of that

  425. as I risked my life

  426. and suffered painfully

  427. in the cause of Christ.

  428. Paul's main purpose here

  429. is to anchor Timothy.

  430. Yes,

  431. there will be difficult days

  432. in the days ahead

  433. because of wicked people

  434. and imposters

  435. who creep in

  436. and deceive.

  437. But remember

  438. how the teaching

  439. that I gave you

  440. matched my life.

  441. People are going to try

  442. and say all kinds

  443. of things about me.

  444. They'll try to discredit me.

  445. But Timothy,

  446. you were there.

  447. You heard me.

  448. You saw me.

  449. You followed me closely.

  450. You can trust the gospel message

  451. that I gave you.

  452. You know that I am the real deal.

  453. I am no hypocrite.

  454. I am no imposter.

  455. I practiced what I preach.

  456. Speaking of imposters,

  457. in verses 12 and 13,

  458. last Sunday I suggested

  459. that the first half

  460. of this chapter

  461. was not so much

  462. about the world in general

  463. or unbelievers in general,

  464. but specifically

  465. about religious pretenders

  466. and devious

  467. spiritual influencers,

  468. false teachers.

  469. And this is kind of confirmed

  470. as we get down here

  471. to verse 13

  472. where Paul draws

  473. this contrast

  474. between all who seek

  475. to live a life

  476. devoted to Christ

  477. and those who are

  478. evildoers

  479. and imposters.

  480. Imposters.

  481. We notice that word.

  482. someone pretending

  483. to have a form

  484. of godliness,

  485. but it's just a form.

  486. Someone confessing

  487. the name of the Lord

  488. is up in verse 19

  489. of chapter 2,

  490. but not turning away

  491. from wickedness.

  492. In a manner of speaking,

  493. Paul's kind of reiterating

  494. what he just said

  495. in the previous verses.

  496. These kinds of people,

  497. evil doing imposters,

  498. will go from bad

  499. to worse.

  500. This is going to be

  501. the normal behavior

  502. of some people

  503. who are confessing Christ.

  504. We need to be careful

  505. how we understand

  506. this statement

  507. that evildoers

  508. and imposters

  509. will go from bad

  510. to worse.

  511. We need to be careful

  512. that we don't lose sight

  513. of what Paul just said

  514. up above in verse 9.

  515. He made two statements.

  516. First, he said,

  517. they will not get very far

  518. because their folly

  519. will be clear to everyone.

  520. Then he said

  521. that they will go

  522. from bad to worse,

  523. deceiving

  524. and being deceived.

  525. So Paul is not saying

  526. that these evildoers

  527. and imposters

  528. will be more and more

  529. successful at deceiving

  530. the true followers

  531. of Jesus.

  532. I think verse 9

  533. up in chapter 2

  534. kind of says the opposite.

  535. They're not going

  536. to be successful.

  537. Their folly

  538. is going to be clear

  539. to the true followers

  540. of Jesus.

  541. So in what sense

  542. will they go

  543. from bad

  544. to worse?

  545. Well, Paul doesn't

  546. really flesh this out

  547. in a lot of detail

  548. except to say

  549. they will be deceiving

  550. and being deceived.

  551. It could mean

  552. that as time goes on

  553. there will be more

  554. of these kinds of people.

  555. It could be

  556. that as time goes on

  557. the sheer number

  558. of lies

  559. and deceptive doctrines

  560. being promoted,

  561. false teachings,

  562. will increase.

  563. It could mean

  564. that the deception

  565. as we get closer

  566. to the end

  567. will be of a higher

  568. quality and caliber

  569. perhaps more and more

  570. helped by the deceptive

  571. work of the devil

  572. and demonic influence.

  573. And we glance back

  574. up to verse 26

  575. of chapter 2.

  576. It could be

  577. that the evil

  578. being done

  579. by these evildoers

  580. and imposters

  581. is just that much

  582. more widespread

  583. and influential

  584. in the world

  585. all while claiming

  586. a form of religion,

  587. a form of devotion

  588. to God.

  589. That's implied

  590. with the word

  591. imposter.

  592. My sense is that

  593. the closer and closer

  594. we get to the end

  595. when Christ returns,

  596. the truer

  597. that these words

  598. in verse 13

  599. will feel

  600. that things

  601. are getting worse.

  602. we also notice

  603. in this verse

  604. that these

  605. evildoers

  606. and imposters

  607. are not only

  608. doing the deceiving

  609. but that they themselves

  610. are being deceived.

  611. This suggests

  612. that many of them

  613. will actually believe

  614. the lies

  615. that they're spreading.

  616. They themselves

  617. have bought into them

  618. hook, line, and sinker.

  619. Again,

  620. we glance up

  621. to verse 26

  622. of chapter 2

  623. where we see

  624. that Timothy's

  625. false teaching

  626. opponents

  627. are described

  628. as those

  629. who have been

  630. ensnared

  631. by the devil

  632. and taken captive

  633. to do his will

  634. and it seems

  635. without even realizing it

  636. they need to come

  637. to their senses.

  638. They don't even

  639. really understand

  640. what's going on here.

  641. Let's come back

  642. for just a moment

  643. to Paul's statement

  644. about Christian persecution

  645. here in verse 12.

  646. everyone

  647. who wants

  648. to live

  649. a godly life

  650. in Christ Jesus

  651. will be persecuted.

  652. First,

  653. we should know

  654. that this was something

  655. that Jesus himself said

  656. in John chapter 15

    John 15:20

  657. verse 20.

  658. Remember what I told you.

  659. A servant

  660. is not greater

  661. than his master.

  662. if they persecuted

  663. me

  664. they will persecute

  665. you also.

  666. Jesus said

  667. a similar thing

  668. in Luke 21

    Luke 21:12

  669. verse 12

  670. specifically applying

  671. to his

  672. disciples

  673. but also

  674. in principle

  675. to all of his followers.

  676. He said

  677. before all this

  678. speaking of some

  679. of the things

  680. that will happen

  681. at the end

  682. they will seize you

  683. and persecute you.

  684. They will hand you

  685. over to synagogues

  686. and put you in prison

  687. and you will

  688. be brought

  689. before kings

  690. and governors

  691. and all on account

  692. of my name.

  693. That's actually

  694. being fulfilled

  695. right now

  696. as Paul writes

  697. this letter

  698. in prison

  699. being brought

  700. before kings

  701. and governors

  702. on account

  703. of the name

  704. of Jesus.

  705. So Jesus

  706. taught

  707. that generally

  708. his followers

  709. would be persecuted.

  710. next we should

  711. appreciate

  712. the immediate

  713. relevance

  714. of this

  715. statement

  716. to Timothy.

  717. Paul is in jail

  718. he's soon

  719. to be executed

  720. as we've already

  721. heard the majority

  722. of professing

  723. Christians

  724. in the whole

  725. region where

  726. Timothy lives

  727. the province

  728. of Asia

  729. have deserted

  730. Paul

  731. that's back

  732. in chapter 1

  733. verse 15

  734. they're distancing

  735. themselves from him

  736. things are getting

  737. hard.

  738. One of the

  739. major things

  740. that Paul

  741. has been doing

  742. in this whole

  743. letter is calling

  744. Timothy

  745. to join with him

  746. in suffering

  747. for the gospel

  748. and so in

  749. Timothy's day

  750. this was written

  751. in his region

  752. and time

  753. it's not an

  754. understatement

  755. for Paul to say

  756. everyone who

  757. wants to live

  758. a godly life

  759. in Christ Jesus

  760. will be persecuted.

  761. This would have

  762. felt so true

  763. to Timothy

  764. and to everyone

  765. in his church

  766. in light of all

  767. that they knew

  768. was going on.

  769. That's the second

  770. thing about this

  771. statement on

  772. Christian persecution.

  773. Finally I do

  774. think it's important

  775. that we take this

  776. as an enduring

  777. principle

  778. not just for that

  779. time

  780. but also

  781. for the centuries

  782. that followed

  783. and even for today

  784. but not to the

  785. point

  786. that we judge

  787. and criticize

  788. Christians

  789. who are not

  790. presently

  791. experiencing

  792. persecution

  793. persecution.

  794. Persecution

  795. is the normal

  796. for the true

  797. devoted follower

  798. of Christ Jesus

  799. and that's

  800. because we live

  801. in a fallen

  802. and sinful

  803. world.

  804. It's a world

  805. in the words

  806. of Paul

  807. full of

  808. unrighteousness

  809. that seeks

  810. to suppress

  811. the truth

  812. that in the

  813. book of Romans

  814. but we've been

  815. called to

  816. proclaim the

  817. truth.

  818. It's a world

  819. full of

  820. darkness

  821. and evil

  822. deeds

  823. said Jesus

  824. in John

    John 3 chapter mention

  825. chapter 3

  826. while he

  827. is the

  828. light

  829. that

  830. exposes

  831. that

  832. darkness

  833. we're

  834. proclaiming

  835. the king

  836. that was

  837. hated

  838. and that

  839. was

  840. rejected

  841. and that

  842. was

  843. murdered

  844. by the

  845. majority.

  846. So for

  847. those reasons

  848. persecution

  849. in its

  850. various forms

  851. and degrees

  852. is to be

  853. expected

  854. just for

  855. seeking to

  856. live a life

  857. devoted to

  858. Christ Jesus.

  859. However,

  860. that does not

  861. mean that we

  862. should automatically

  863. question the

  864. genuineness of a

  865. person's faith

  866. simply because

  867. they have no

  868. persecution in

  869. their life at

  870. the moment.

  871. In the larger

  872. story since

  873. Jesus came,

  874. there have been

  875. notable exceptions

  876. to this general

  877. principle.

  878. There's been

  879. times and places

  880. where by the

  881. grace of God

  882. in answer

  883. to the

  884. prayers of

  885. his people,

  886. God has

  887. given his

  888. people favor

  889. in the eyes

  890. of leaders

  891. and governments

  892. and he's

  893. brought renewal

  894. and revival

  895. in whole

  896. regions.

  897. And if God

  898. works like

  899. that in a

  900. place,

  901. then we

  902. should expect

  903. the natural

  904. expectation is

  905. that this

  906. principle of

  907. persecution

  908. may lessen

  909. in that place

  910. for a time.

  911. there was a

  912. time when

  913. many of the

  914. early settlers

  915. and colonists

  916. of North

  917. America were

  918. either Christian

  919. or if not,

  920. were at least

  921. raised to

  922. respect and

  923. uphold Christian

  924. values by

  925. their parents

  926. and grandparents

  927. in England

  928. or in Europe.

  929. And so in

  930. Canada and in

  931. the U.S.

  932. in the past

  933. 100 years or

  934. so, we've

  935. enjoyed much

  936. less persecution

  937. than the norm

  938. because of the

  939. way that our

  940. nation and our

  941. society started

  942. off.

  943. There was a

  944. time not

  945. that long

  946. ago when

  947. everybody went

  948. to church.

  949. That was

  950. just the

  951. thing.

  952. And so

  953. their Bible

  954. believing,

  955. Christ-centered

  956. churches all

  957. over North

  958. America like

  959. ours, who

  960. for the past

  961. several generations

  962. have known

  963. very little of

  964. government

  965. interference or

  966. anti-Christian

  967. violence, but

  968. have enjoyed

  969. tremendous religious

  970. freedom.

  971. But of course

  972. all of that is

  973. we're starting to

  974. see is now

  975. changing.

  976. It's shifting

  977. back to the

  978. normal for

  979. Christians around

  980. the world and

  981. for Christians

  982. throughout the

  983. centuries.

  984. So that's

  985. thing number

  986. three about

  987. Christian persecution.

  988. This does apply

  989. to us, but we

  990. just need to think

  991. about it carefully.

  992. Some people have

  993. used this verse in

  994. really weird ways.

  995. They've kind of

  996. looked at it and

  997. said, well, since

  998. this is true, that

  999. everyone who wants

  1000. to live a godly

  1001. life in Christ

  1002. Jesus will be

  1003. persecuted, and I'm

  1004. not being persecuted,

  1005. well then we must

  1006. not be living

  1007. faithfully.

  1008. Therefore, maybe we

  1009. need to pray, we

1010. need to ask God to

  1011. bring some persecution

  1012. our way.

  1013. I don't think so.

  1014. That's not what Paul

  1015. said in the first

  1016. letter to Timothy.

  1017. Pray that we might

  1018. have peace and favor

  1019. in the eyes of

  1020. governments.

  1021. So let's not pray

  1022. and ask God to

  1023. bring persecution.

  1024. Let's not fear that

  1025. our faith is less

  1026. than genuine simply

  1027. because we've

  1028. experienced very

  1029. little of it.

  1030. let's just keep

  1031. focusing on being

  1032. faithful to King

  1033. Jesus and on

  1034. declaring him

  1035. whatever comes our

  1036. way.

  1037. Let's thank God

  1038. for the freedom

  1039. that we have had

  1040. to gather and to

  1041. worship and to

  1042. speak about Jesus.

  1043. But let's not be

  1044. surprised if in the

  1045. days ahead,

  1046. persecution is

  1047. much stronger,

  1048. opposition has much

  1049. more teeth than in

  1050. the years behind us.

  1051. verse 14,

  1052. Paul writes,

  1053. but as for you,

  1054. continue in what you

  1055. have learned and

  1056. have become convinced

  1057. of because you know

  1058. those from whom you

  1059. learned it and how

  1060. from infancy you have

  1061. known the holy

  1062. scriptures which are

  1063. able to make you

  1064. wise for salvation

  1065. through faith in

  1066. Christ Jesus.

  1067. promises.

1068. So no matter how bad

  1069. things get,

  1070. Timothy,

  1071. continue on in what

  1072. you have learned and

  1073. become convinced of.

  1074. Think about that.

  1075. What is that?

1076. Well, it's the truth of

  1077. God,

  1078. the gospel,

  1079. the good news of

  1080. Jesus Christ.

  1081. And who has Timothy

  1082. learned these things

  1083. from?

  1084. Well, Paul's already

  1085. just mentioned himself.

  1086. He says,

  1087. you know me,

1088. you know my life and

  1089. my teaching,

  1090. but Timothy,

  1091. you also know the

  1092. truth of God and

1093. what led you to all

  1094. this in the first

  1095. place from your

  1096. mother and your

  1097. grandmother.

  1098. They're the ones who

  1099. taught you the holy

  1100. scriptures which was

  1101. the foundation to you

  1102. receiving and

  1103. accepting and

  1104. believing the gospel.

  1105. Paul mentioned them

  1106. earlier in the letter

  1107. back in chapter 1,

  1108. verse 5.

  1109. Timothy's mother,

  1110. Eunice,

  1111. and his grandmother,

  1112. Lois,

1113. and how they had a

  1114. sincere faith.

  1115. And so I think that's

  1116. who he's probably

  1117. referring to here.

  1118. They were the ones

  1119. that taught him the

  1120. holy scriptures since

1121. the time he was a

  1122. young child.

  1123. You know them,

  1124. Timothy.

  1125. You know the

  1126. genuineness of their

  1127. faith.

  1128. You know their

  1129. conduct.

  1130. You know that they

  1131. have integrity,

  1132. that their love was

  1133. genuine, that they

  1134. were faithful people.

  1135. And at this point,

  1136. Paul shifts and he

  1137. actually encourages

  1138. Timothy not just to

  1139. anchor his faith and

  1140. his knowledge of his

  1141. mother and his

  1142. grandmother and of

  1143. Paul, but he

  1144. encourages Timothy to

  1145. anchor his faith in

  1146. the scriptures

  1147. themselves.

1148. And oh, I hate to

  1149. do this, but we're

1150. going to hold off on

  1151. these next verses until

  1152. September.

  1153. 16 and 17, the

  1154. verses that follow are

  1155. some of the most

  1156. important verses in

  1157. the entire Bible.

  1158. memorizing these

  1159. verses when I was a

  1160. kid and being

  1161. reminded of them over

  1162. and over again in

  1163. Bible college has made

  1164. all the difference in

  1165. my life.

  1166. These verses for me

1167. have been one of the

  1168. golden keys to my

  1169. Christian growth over

  1170. the past two decades.

  1171. They're the foundation

  1172. of all my preaching

  1173. and teaching and any

  1174. spiritual leadership

  1175. that I've been able

  1176. to give.

1177. And so they really do

  1178. deserve their own

  1179. sermon.

  1180. And we're going to

  1181. dig into them deeply

  1182. in September when I

  1183. return from my

  1184. sabbatical.

  1185. But let's just collect

1186. up some of the things

  1187. that we've heard

  1188. already this morning

  1189. in these few verses

  1190. we looked at.

  1191. Paul's main thing

  1192. here is to encourage

  1193. Timothy to be

  1194. steadfast.

  1195. Difficult times are

  1196. coming.

  1197. Persecution is

  1198. intensifying.

1199. And it's going to get

  1200. worse.

  1201. Evil people and

  1202. imposters are going

1203. to make it hard in

  1204. the days ahead.

  1205. And so be steadfast

  1206. Timothy.

  1207. Continue in the

  1208. gospel which you

  1209. have learned, which

  1210. you have heard from

  1211. me and from others.

  1212. Follow my example

  1213. just as you have

  1214. until now,

  1215. Timothy.

  1216. Look at my life,

  1217. my way of life.

  1218. Look at my approach

  1219. to things, my

  1220. purpose.

  1221. Look at my faith.

  1222. Look at my patience.

  1223. Look at my love.

  1224. Look at the

  1225. opposition I

  1226. endured.

  1227. Paul really puts

  1228. himself forward as

  1229. just this example

  1230. of the truth of

  1231. the gospel.

  1232. An example to

  1233. follow as the

  1234. days get darker.

  1235. We often wonder,

  1236. what can I do

  1237. to encourage

  1238. my kids to be

  1239. steadfast in

  1240. their faith?

  1241. We've been

  1242. teaching them at

  1243. home.

  1244. We've been

  1245. teaching them here

  1246. at church for

  1247. the kids that

  1248. are in alive.

  1249. And as they

  1250. grow up, we

  1251. know that they're

  1252. going to face

  1253. the full pressure

  1254. of our world to

  1255. be anything but a

  1256. devoted follower

  1257. of Jesus.

  1258. How can we

  1259. encourage them to

  1260. be steadfast?

  1261. Paul's encouragement

  1262. here for Timothy

  1263. is his life.

  1264. How I have

  1265. lived.

  1266. You know,

  1267. Timothy, since the

  1268. beginning when you

  1269. first believed and

  1270. came on those

  1271. journeys with me.

  1272. Let's not

  1273. underestimate the

  1274. power of a life

  1275. lived for Christ

  1276. to encourage

  1277. others and to

  1278. help them be

  1279. steadfast.

  1280. Isn't this what we

1281. want to be able to

  1282. say to our own

  1283. kids and to the

  1284. younger Christians

  1285. in our church?

  1286. Son,

  1287. difficult times

  1288. are coming.

  1289. And it's going to

  1290. continue to get

  1291. worse.

  1292. Evil people and

  1293. imposters are going

1294. to make it hard in

  1295. the days ahead.

  1296. But be steadfast.

  1297. Continue in the

  1298. gospel, in the

  1299. word of God that

  1300. you have learned

  1301. from us.

  1302. Follow my

  1303. example, son,

  1304. just as you have

  1305. until now.

  1306. Look at my life.

  1307. Look at my

  1308. conduct.

  1309. Look at my

  1310. purpose.

  1311. My faith.

  1312. My patience.

  1313. My love.

  1314. The hardships I've

  1315. endured and how

  1316. Jesus has rescued me

  1317. through all of them.

  1318. Be steadfast, my

  1319. son, or my

  1320. daughter, young

  1321. man or young

  1322. woman.

1323. To be able to say

  1324. that, though,

  1325. requires that we're

  1326. living that

  1327. ourselves, that we

  1328. have a life lived

  1329. for Christ to

  1330. point to,

  1331. doesn't it?

  1332. It requires that

  1333. we ourselves are

  1334. living with gospel

  1335. conduct, striving to

  1336. live uprightly.

  1337. It requires that we

  1338. ourselves are living

  1339. with gospel purpose.

  1340. It requires that we're

  1341. really trusting Jesus,

  1342. and I mean really

  1343. putting the full weight

1344. of our lives on his

  1345. word and his

  1346. promises.

  1347. To encourage someone

  1348. like that requires that

  1349. we're actually living

  1350. patiently with

  1351. others.

1352. I mean, if Paul had

  1353. been an impatient

  1354. guy, he wouldn't

  1355. have been able to

  1356. say this.

  1357. No, Timothy, you

  1358. know my patience.

  1359. You saw it.

  1360. It requires that we're

  1361. actually loving one

  1362. another truly from the

  1363. heart.

1364. This is the kind of

  1365. life that will

  1366. encourage our kids

  1367. and our young people

  1368. to be steadfast,

  1369. even through hard

  1370. times ahead.

  1371. They need to see

  1372. that our faith is

  1373. real.

  1374. They need to see

  1375. that we have more

1376. than just a form of

  1377. godliness that lacks

  1378. power.

  1379. Like the impostors up

  1380. in verse 5.

1381. They need to see that

  1382. Jesus Christ really

  1383. does live in his

  1384. people and change

  1385. them and changes

  1386. them.

  1387. How will they see

  1388. that unless we

  1389. ourselves are,

  1390. like Paul said,

  1391. wanting to live

  1392. lives fully devoted

  1393. to Christ Jesus.

  1394. Before the days

  1395. of GPS and

  1396. electronics,

  1397. when sailors

  1398. lost their way

  1399. at sea,

  1400. how did they find

  1401. their way?

  1402. They navigated

  1403. using the stars

  1404. at night.

  1405. And the apparent

  1406. position of the

  1407. stars in the sky

  1408. changes with the

  1409. rotation of the

  1410. earth and with

  1411. each season.

  1412. You can see

  1413. kind of the

  1414. movement over a

  1415. time lapse of the

  1416. stars.

  1417. But one particular

  1418. star was especially

  1419. useful.

  1420. It's the one right

  1421. in the middle.

  1422. The north star,

  1423. Polaris.

  1424. It was so useful

  1425. because it's just

  1426. uniquely positioned

  1427. directly above the

  1428. earth's rotational

  1429. axes.

  1430. And as the earth

  1431. turns, every other

  1432. star seems to spin

  1433. around and move.

  1434. But the north star

  1435. appears to stand

  1436. still.

  1437. And so no matter

  1438. what time of night

  1439. or what season

  1440. it is, following

  1441. Polaris will lead

  1442. a traveler who's

  1443. in the northern

  1444. hemisphere due

  1445. north.

  1446. And so in this

  1447. dark world that

  1448. we're living in,

  1449. which is getting

  1450. darker, our young

  1451. people are being

  1452. bombarded with all

  1453. kinds of messages.

  1454. And some are

  1455. having doubts.

  1456. And some are

  1457. getting lost in the

  1458. sea of deception,

  1459. in the sea of

  1460. misplaced priorities

  1461. and misdirected

  1462. loves.

  1463. How will they

  1464. find their way

  1465. back?

  1466. I want my life

  1467. to be like Paul's.

  1468. A spiritual

  1469. north star.

  1470. Pointing to Jesus.

  1471. Pointing back to

  1472. the gospel.

  1473. And how it's

  1474. true.

  1475. Pointing constantly,

  1476. day after day,

  1477. week after week,

  1478. year after year,

1479. till the day that I

  1480. draw my last breath.

  1481. life.

  1482. So that no matter

  1483. how tough things

  1484. get for my kids,

  1485. for the youth,

  1486. for new Christians,

  1487. for anybody else

  1488. watching my life,

  1489. that they will have

1490. a view of the way.

  1491. A view of what's

  1492. true.

  1493. Should they leave

  1494. home like the

  1495. prodigal, that

  1496. they'll have a way

  1497. to see, yes, the

  1498. power of the gospel

  1499. is real.

1500. I saw it in my

  1501. dad's life.

  1502. And so I hope

  1503. that's your heart

  1504. and prayer too.

  1505. Whether you have

  1506. kids or not,

  1507. there are people

  1508. watching us.

  1509. They are searching

  1510. for the way.

  1511. And we have an

  1512. opportunity through

  1513. our lives to show

  1514. them that this

  1515. really is the way.

  1516. Jesus is the way.

  1517. Let's pray.

  1518. Father in heaven,

  1519. we thank you that

  1520. you are patient

  1521. with us.

  1522. None of us,

  1523. not even Paul,

  1524. lived perfect

  1525. lives.

  1526. We struggle

  1527. with sin.

  1528. We struggle

  1529. with impatience.

  1530. We struggle

  1531. with not being

  1532. loving as we

  1533. should.

  1534. we are tempted

  1535. to take the

  1536. easy way out.

  1537. We would rather

  1538. be comfortable

  1539. than suffer.

  1540. But I pray

  1541. that you would

  1542. work in us,

  1543. that we would

  1544. become more

  1545. and more

  1546. like Paul

  1547. in these

  1548. words.

  1549. That our lives

  1550. would point to

  1551. you and bring

  1552. glory to you,

  1553. that we be like

  1554. spotlights on

  1555. you for everyone

  1556. in our world

  1557. to see.

  1558. We especially

  1559. pray for those

  1560. in our families,

  1561. our children,

  1562. and our young

  1563. people that

  1564. we're connected

  1565. with in various

  1566. ways.

  1567. Lord, it's a

  1568. difficult world

  1569. to live in.

  1570. And we see

  1571. the things that

  1572. are online and

  1573. we just gasp

  1574. at some of

  1575. these things.

  1576. We ask that you

  1577. would work with

  1578. power in the

  1579. hearts of our

  1580. children and in

  1581. our young people,

  1582. our youth,

  1583. and that you

  1584. would not allow

  1585. them to be swept

  1586. away or deceived,

  1587. but that you

  1588. would lead them

  1589. and guide them

  1590. through our lives.

  1591. Please do that

  1592. through us,

  1593. we pray.

  1594. In Jesus' name,

  1595. amen.

  1596. Amen.
