  1. it's nice being introduced as a hick.

  2. So I've got a question as I get up here.

  3. Oh, grab your swords.

  4. If you don't have one, there's one in the head of you

  5. because we'll be looking at scripture, focusing on a passage.

  6. So I've got a question as I'm up here.

  7. How relevant are the Old Testament laws to us today?

  8. Some are relevant, some maybe not.

  9. I'd like to look at one.

  10. Leviticus 19.27.

  11. Do not cut the hair on the sides of your head

  12. or clip off the edges of your beard.

  13. Wonderful.

  14. Thankfully, no men here need lamb chop sideburns anymore.

  15. But that was an Old Testament law.

  16. And you can see some of the Jews today still do that.

  17. Another one, Leviticus 4.27-31.

  18. If any member of the community sins unintentionally

  19. and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord's commands,

  20. when they realize their guilt and their sins they have committed

  21. become known, they must bring as their offering

  22. for the sin they committed a female goat without defect.

  23. They are to lay their hands on the head of the sin offering

  24. and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering.

  25. Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his fingers,

  26. put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering,

  27. and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.

  28. They shall remove all the fat,

  29. just as the fat is removed from the fellowship offering,

  30. and the priest shall burn it on the altar

  31. as an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

  32. In this way, the priests will make atonement for them

  33. and they will be forgiven.

  34. This is a sin offering.

  35. As Christian believers, we no longer need to offer female goats

  36. without defect.

  37. When the Israelites followed the laws of God,

  38. the temple was literally a blood-stained slaughterhouse.

  39. Christ's death fulfilled the sacrifice for a sin offering.

  40. And many of the Old Testament laws are not in effect for us today,

  41. yet there are some laws that apply every bit as much today

  42. as they did over 3,000 years ago.

  43. So grab your sword, grab your Bible.

  44. Exodus, second book in the Bible, Exodus 20.

  45. It should be very familiar to people.

  46. Exodus chapter 20, and I'll read 1 to 17.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  47. This is the Ten Commandments.

  48. Is it relevant today?

  49. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt,

  50. out of the land of slavery.

  51. You shall have no other gods before me.

  52. You shall not make for yourselves an image

  53. in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath

  54. or in the waters below.

  55. You shall not bow down to them or worship them,

  56. for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God,

  57. punishing the children for the sin of their parents

  58. to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

  59. but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me

  60. and keep my commandments.

  61. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God,

  62. for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

  63. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

  64. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  65. but the seventh day is the Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  66. On it you shall not do any work,

  67. neither you nor your sons or daughters,

  68. nor your male or female servants,

  69. nor your animals or any foreigner residing in your towns.

  70. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,

  71. the sea and all that is in them,

  72. but he rested on the seventh.

  73. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

  74. Honor your father and your mother,

  75. so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

  76. You shall not murder.

  77. You shall not commit adultery.

  78. You shall not steal.

  79. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

  80. You shall not covet your neighbor's house.

  81. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male or female servant,

  82. his ox or donkey,

  83. or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

  84. That's the Ten Commandments.

  85. When the Lord talked to Moses from the burning bush,

  86. he introduced himself as,

  87. I am the God of your father,

  88. the God of Abraham,

  89. the God of Isaac,

  90. and the God of Jacob.

  91. He now introduces himself in verse 2 as,

  92. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt,

  93. out of the land of slavery.

  94. Every Israelite that crossed the Red Sea knows this God.

  95. Every one of them would have seen the plagues that crushed Egypt.

  96. Every one of them would have remembered the loss of the firstborn of every house in Egypt

  97. that did not wipe blood on the door frame,

  98. so that the angel would pass over

  99. and not kill one of their own children.

  100. Everyone remembered crossing the Red Sea

  101. while the Egyptian army was in pursuit,

  102. and that the sea flooded back in destroying that threat.

  103. The first commandment,

  104. verse 3,

  105. The nation Israel had spent 430 years

  106. in Egypt,

  107. living with and worshipping the false gods there.

  108. The Egyptian plagues

  109. were God's way of showing his people

  110. how worthless that was.

  111. Because the Israelites did not have faith in God

  112. to lead them back to Israel.

  113. None of the generation crossed into the promised land

  114. except Caleb and Joshua.

  115. 40 years.

  116. And that whole generation,

  117. even Moses,

  118. could not make it into the promised land

  119. except Caleb and Joshua.

  120. As God's chosen people,

  121. Israel rarely followed this command,

  122. and most of the Old Testament

  123. tells the story of what happened to them

  124. or is prophesied of what would happen.

  125. The relevant question for us today is,

  126. do we even believe in a God?

  127. For many people,

  128. the idea of a great God

  129. that created the universe out of nothing

  130. is nonsense.

  131. Not just so,

  132. you know,

  133. so many people just,

  134. oh, it's evolution,

  135. it's,

  136. we can answer the questions

  137. with these other answers,

  138. but it really,

  139. it's shallow.

  140. It doesn't really answer

  141. how things happened.

  142. Philippians 3, 18 and 19.

  143. For as I have often told you before

  144. and now tell you again,

  145. even with tears,

  146. many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.

  147. Their destruction,

  148. or their destiny,

  149. is destruction.

  150. Their God is their stomach,

  151. and their glory is in their shame.

  152. Their mind is set on earthly things.

  153. So that's what so much of the world is.

  154. Their God is their stomach.

  155. Whatever feels good,

  156. I need this satisfied right now.

  157. That is what their God is.

  158. The book of Ecclesiastes

  159. tells of the futility

  160. of chasing after stuff

  161. and not making God

  162. the most important focus

  163. of our lives.

  164. Next commandment.

  165. You shall not make for yourself

  166. an image in the form

  167. of anything in heaven above

  168. or on the earth beneath

  169. or in the waters below.

  170. You shall not bow down to them

  171. or worship them.

  172. For I, the Lord your God,

  173. am a jealous God,

  174. punishing the children

  175. for the sin of their parents

  176. to the third and fourth generation

  177. of those who hate me,

  178. but showing love

  179. to a thousand generations

  180. of those who love me

  181. and keep my commandments.

  182. We look at idols

  183. as a foolish idea.

  184. Isaiah in chapter 44

  185. summed it up well,

  186. pointing out the nonsense it is.

  187. Isaiah 44.

  188. If a man's fuel,

  189. it is a man's fuel for burning.

  190. Some of it he takes

  191. and warms himself.

  192. He kindles a fire

  193. and bakes bread,

  194. but he also fashions a God

  195. and worships us.

  196. So that's what they were doing.

  197. They were making wooden idols

  198. in their houses,

  199. but it was just out of the same wood

  200. that they burnt for fires.

  201. To us this is foolish,

  202. but this was a real

  203. and horrible problem in Israel.

  204. Having a tangible object

  205. you could see and feel

  206. made it real.

  207. They would at times

  208. mix temple worship

  209. and idol worship.

  210. They would do the sacrifices to God,

  211. but then they would also do

  212. their own worship to the Baals

  213. and to the other gods.

  214. So it was a,

  215. yeah,

  216. trying to mix two things,

  217. and this was really,

  218. really disturbing to God.

  219. In our modern Western world,

  220. we don't make wooden idols,

  221. but we do place high value

  222. in many things.

  223. Houses,

  224. work,

  225. sports,

  226. money.

  227. These are all objects

  228. that are necessary

  229. or entertaining,

  230. but for many,

  231. they are more important than God.

  232. they are our idols.

  233. God warns us about

  234. coming deception

  235. in the last days,

  236. being focused on stuff

  237. or pleasure

  238. in a way

  239. where you're being deceived

  240. and lulled

  241. into a complacency

  242. and have no fear of God.

  243. As we're told over and over

  244. to fear God

  245. because of what He can do to you,

  246. but

  247. He is a God in heaven

  248. that is so powerful.

  249. We don't have

  250. a full appreciation

  251. of who God is.

  252. Next commandment.

  253. You shall not misuse

  254. the name of the Lord your God,

  255. for the Lord will not hold

  256. anyone guiltless

  257. who misuses His name.

  258. That one's easy.

  259. I don't go around

  260. swearing by God's name,

  261. by using God's name.

  262. This one is impossible

  263. to follow, though,

  264. since I claim to be a Christian

  265. and my actions

  266. don't always follow

  267. this declaration.

  268. Commandments 6-10

  269. point out

  270. what I'm like too often.

  271. I may not murder,

  272. but I'm tempted

  273. to pass on information

  274. about someone else

  275. that is not edifying.

  276. It's called a gossip.

  277. We live in a world

  278. that increasingly

  279. does not believe in God

  280. or that Christ

  281. was an actual person.

  282. It is easy to do

  283. all things

  284. like everyone else.

  285. Paul,

  286. in Romans 7,

  287. nailed it.

  288. Romans 7

  289. is just,

  290. connects to

  291. the Old Testament

  292. to the Ten Commandments

  293. so well.

  294. Romans 7-21.

  295. So I find this law

  296. at work.

  297. Although I want to do good,

  298. evil is right there with me.

  299. For in my inner being

  300. I delight in God's law.

  301. But I see another law

  302. at work in me,

  303. waging war against

  304. the law of my mind

  305. and making me

  306. a prisoner of the law

  307. of sin

  308. at work within me.

  309. What a wretched man I am!

  310. Who will rescue me

  311. from this body

  312. that is subject to death?

  313. Thanks be to God

  314. who delivers me

  315. through Jesus Christ

  316. our Lord.

  317. So then,

  318. I myself

  319. in my mind

  320. am a slave

  321. to God's law

  322. but in my sinful nature

  323. a slave

  324. to the law

  325. of sin.

  326. It's just,

  327. we want

  328. to do the right thing

  329. but we're human.

  330. Now I just want to

  331. take a step back

  332. and look at these

  333. first three commandments

  334. and they,

  335. and see how they apply

  336. to our triune God.

  337. Number one,

  338. first commandment,

  339. or the first commandment,

  340. God the Father

  341. is supreme.

  342. There are no other gods

  343. at all.

  344. He is seen

  345. in scripture

  346. as a king

  347. sitting on his throne.

  348. Now remember

  349. that Satan's goal

  350. has always been

  351. to be seen

  352. as equal

  353. to God.

  354. Not above God

  355. but equal.

  356. You know,

  357. it's like comparing

  358. a matchbox

  359. you know,

  360. a little car

  361. to a 1932

  362. Rolls Royce

  363. silver shadow.

  364. You know,

  365. like,

  366. they're not even comparable.

  367. But Satan,

  368. his goal

  369. in all of eternity

  370. is to be elevated

  371. to that same level

  372. as God.

  373. But God is supreme

  374. so we can picture him

  375. have no other gods

  376. before me.

  377. Second commandment,

  378. we're not to make

  379. idols.

  380. Jesus,

  381. the Son,

  382. came to earth

  383. and lived

  384. as a physical man.

  385. All throughout history,

  386. mankind

  387. has imposed

  388. their ideas

  389. onto idols.

  390. Babylonian,

  391. Greek,

  392. Roman cultures

  393. all depicted

  394. their gods

  395. in human form.

  396. Depicting Jesus

  397. this way

  398. would lead us

  399. to imposing

  400. our idea

  401. of who God is

  402. by what we think

  403. he would look like.

  404. By imposing

  405. our ideas

  406. on Christ,

  407. we could then

  408. manipulate him.

  409. Idolatry

  410. was Israel's

  411. greatest problem

  412. and we

  413. would be

  414. no different.

  415. So what you

  416. can see

  417. in your mind

  418. and you try

  419. and say

  420. make this work

  421. and I can

  422. make an idol

  423. do for you

  424. what I want

  425. it to do,

  426. that's why God

  427. doesn't want us

  428. to have

  429. a preconceived

  430. idea.

  431. Pictures of Christ

  432. are always wrong.

  433. The third,

  434. misusing

  435. the name

  436. of the Lord,

  437. misusing

  438. the name

  439. of God.

  440. Think about

  441. your own name.

  442. It's not

  443. a physical

  444. part of you

  445. but it is

  446. your identity.

  447. Proverbs

  448. talks about

  449. having a good

  450. name.

  451. This is not

  452. in the spelling

  453. but in how

  454. you are perceived

  455. in the community.

  456. Likewise,

  457. the Holy Spirit

  458. is not the

  459. physical

  460. representation

  461. of God

  462. but the

  463. invisible

  464. spirit

  465. that abides

  466. in us.

  467. being known

  468. by the name

  469. Christian

  470. has great

  471. implications

  472. since we are

  473. to be

  474. ambassadors

  475. of Christ.

  476. So we can

  477. see that

  478. yeah,

  479. you know,

  480. we are,

  481. we don't

  482. see the

  483. Holy Spirit

  484. but it's just

  485. like our name.

  486. It's part of us

  487. but it isn't.

  488. Okay,

  489. let's carry on

  490. with the

  491. Ten Commandments.

  492. Remember the

  493. Sabbath day

  494. by keeping it

  495. holy.

  496. Six days

  497. you shall

  498. labor and

  499. do all

  500. your work

  501. but the

  502. seventh day

  503. is a

  504. Sabbath

  505. to the

  506. Lord your

  507. God.

  508. On it

  509. you shall

  510. do no

  511. work,

  512. neither you

  513. nor your

  514. son or

  515. daughter,

  516. nor your

  517. male or

  518. female servant,

  519. nor your

  520. animals,

  521. nor any

  522. foreigner

  523. residing in

  524. your town.

  525. For in

  526. six days

  527. the Lord

  528. made the

  529. heavens and

  530. the earth,

  531. the sea and

  532. all that is

  533. in them.

  534. But he

  535. rested on

  536. the seventh

  537. day.

  538. Therefore,

  539. the Lord

  540. blessed the

  541. Sabbath day

  542. and he

  543. made it

  544. holy.

  545. As believers

  546. in Christ,

  547. we do not

  548. follow the

  549. Sabbath the

  550. same as the

  551. Old Testament

  552. Jews did.

  553. We worship

  554. God on the

  555. day he rose

  556. from the

  557. grave,

  558. which is

  559. Sunday.

  560. The Sabbath

  561. was always

  562. Saturday,

  563. we worship

  564. on a

  565. Sunday.

  566. The reason

  567. to worship

  568. God has

  569. not changed.

  570. He is

  571. the creator

  572. and redeemer.

  573. We truly

  574. benefit from

  575. a day of

  576. rest,

  577. but mostly

  578. we benefit

  579. from not

  580. focusing on

  581. our idols

  582. and then

  583. worshiping

  584. God instead.

  585. So

  586. Sabbath,

  587. so the

  588. Sunday is,

  589. there's no

  590. one here

  591. that says,

  592. boy,

  593. I wish I

  594. would work

  595. every day

  596. of the week

  597. continually,

  598. but it

  599. is,

  600. God has

  601. designed us

  602. to have a

  603. day of

  604. rest,

  605. change of

  606. pace,

  607. but a time

  608. to focus

  609. on him.

  610. Next

  611. verse,

  612. honor your

  613. father and

  614. your mother

  615. so that

  616. you may

  617. live long

  618. in the

  619. land the

  620. Lord is

  621. giving you.

  622. This is

  623. the only

  624. commandment

  625. with the

  626. promise.

  627. What does

  628. honor mean

  629. and is it

  630. relevant today?

  631. Honor is a

  632. lot more than

  633. saying a few

  634. nice things

  635. and a

  636. semi-annual

  637. visit.

  638. It means

  639. taking time

  640. for a

  641. relationship.

  642. It means

  643. investing

  644. time.

  645. It means

  646. sacrifice.

  647. Just a

  648. story I

  649. have.

  650. January

  651. 2nd,

  652. 1995.

  653. I drove

  654. to Medicine

  655. Hat where

  656. my parents

  657. lived and

  658. took them

  659. to the

  660. doctor for

  661. a follow-up

  662. appointment

  663. for dad.

  664. He had

  665. been having

  666. headaches and

  667. a general

  668. sickness

  669. feeling.

  670. We expected

  671. the diagnosis

  672. of mini-strokes

  673. since he had

  674. had quite a

  675. few before

  676. and, you

  677. know,

  678. this is just

  679. probably what

  680. it was.

  681. But the

  682. doctor floored

  683. us with the

  684. announcement

  685. that, Henry,

  686. you have

  687. brain cancer.

  688. After dad's

  689. treatment in

  690. Calgary, I

  691. made almost

  692. weekly trips to

  693. the Hat to

  694. help wherever I

  695. could.

  696. Dad was not a

  697. believer and our

  698. relationship was

  699. not the greatest,

  700. but I made the

  701. choice to

  702. honor dad with

  703. all I could,

  704. with all I

  705. could give.

  706. Dad passed

  707. away almost

  708. two years

  709. later, and

  710. then mom was

  711. diagnosed with

  712. an autoimmune

  713. disease brought

  714. on by exhaustion

  715. because she

  716. cared for dad

  717. day and night.

  718. Still more

  719. trips south.

  720. Mom, it was

  721. much easier to

  722. help, but

  723. still time

  724. consuming.

  725. It is

  726. interesting that

  727. I could start

  728. all the vehicles,

  729. punch zombie

  730. mode, even the

  731. semi, and in

  732. two hours we

  733. would be in a

  734. medicine hat.

  735. We just, every

  736. week we could

  737. just go back

  738. and same

  739. fields, same

  740. this, everything,

  741. just driving

  742. down every

  743. week for three

  744. years.

  745. Honor,

  746. interestingly, is

  747. not a one-way

  748. street.

  749. Ephesians 6,

  750. 1 to 3, repeat

  751. the fifth

  752. commandment, then

  753. in verse 4 it

  754. says, fathers,

  755. do not exasperate

  756. your children.

  757. Instead, bring

  758. them up in the

  759. training and

  760. instruction of

  761. the Lord.

  762. To gain

  763. honor, you

  764. must be

  765. honorable.

  766. The last five

  767. commandments focus

  768. on interpersonal

  769. relationships.

  770. You shall not

  771. murder.

  772. You shall not

  773. commit adultery.

  774. You shall not

  775. steal.

  776. You shall not

  777. give false

  778. testimony against

  779. your neighbor.

  780. You shall not

  781. covet your

  782. neighbor's house.

  783. You shall not

  784. covet your

  785. neighbor's wife

  786. or his male

  787. or female

  788. servant, his

  789. ox or donkey,

  790. or anything that

  791. belongs to your

  792. neighbor.

  793. You will notice

  794. that the last

  795. five commandments

  796. have a descending

  797. level of severity.

  798. Just take a look

  799. at that.

  800. You may get very

  801. mad at someone,

  802. but to commit

  803. murder is truly

  804. rare.

  805. Adultery happens

  806. more frequently,

  807. often as

  808. clandestine as

  809. possible, but

  810. always with

  811. consequences.

  812. King David

  813. would have

  814. known this

  815. commandment,

  816. but still

  817. committed adultery

  818. with Bathsheba,

  819. resulting in the

  820. death of Uriah

  821. and the loss

  822. of his throne

  823. to his son

  824. Absalom.

  825. David never

  826. regained the

  827. stature with his

  828. people that he

  829. previously had.

  830. So there's

  831. always consequences

  832. to what we do.

  833. If you commit

  834. murder, you're

  835. going to be

  836. sent to jail

  837. if you get

  838. caught.

  839. And that's

  840. why we have

  841. policemen in

  842. our midst

  843. here to help

  844. us so that

  845. criminals like

  846. that get

  847. caught.

  848. Adultery,

  849. if you know

  850. found out,

  851. you'd lose

  852. your stature

  853. in the

  854. community.

  855. People do

  856. not respect

  857. you.

  858. Next

  859. commandment,

  860. you shall

  861. not steal.

  862. Straightforward,

  863. but done all

  864. too often,

  865. in many ways.

  866. We can all

  867. think of things

  868. or time.

  869. We have

  870. stolen from

  871. others or

  872. God.

  873. People

  874. brought

  875. defective

  876. sacrifices to

  877. God as an

  878. example in

  879. the Old

  880. Testament.

  881. Surely a

  882. blind or

  883. crippled

  884. lamb was

  885. all right.

  886. It is

  887. easy to be

  888. deceitful in

  889. business dealings.

  890. You know,

  891. it's, oh,

  892. we misrepresent

  893. that or cheat

  894. on weights or

  895. anything.

  896. Honoring God

  897. is important in

  898. how we deal

  899. with others.

  900. Next, you

  901. shall not give

  902. false testimony

  903. against your

  904. neighbor.

  905. This is not

  906. only a court

  907. of law, but

  908. also known

  909. by the name

  910. gossip.

  911. It is easy

  912. to try and

  913. make ourselves

  914. look better by

  915. exaggerating or

  916. twisting this

  917. story to make

  918. the other

  919. person look

  920. bad.

  921. An example

  922. right now is

  923. the election

  924. campaign in

  925. the States.

  926. Truly, have

  927. you heard

  928. either

  929. candidate say

  930. anything nice

  931. or uplifting

  932. about their

  933. opponents.

  934. No one is

  935. ever as good

  936. or as bad

  937. as they are

  938. painted in

  939. the media.

  940. Finally, you

  941. shall not

  942. covet your

  943. neighbor's

  944. house, you

  945. shall not

  946. covet your

  947. neighbor's

  948. wife, or

  949. his male or

  950. female servant,

  951. his ox or

  952. donkey, or

  953. anything that

  954. belongs to

  955. your neighbor.

  956. I find this

  957. next to

  958. misusing the

  959. name of the

  960. Lord.

  961. Lord, this

  962. is the

  963. hardest

  964. commandment

  965. to follow.

  966. This is

  967. done in

  968. your heart,

  969. in secret,

  970. with a

  971. smile.

  972. Jealousy

  973. is very

  974. poisonous.

  975. Examples.

  976. Dead has not

  977. worked as hard

  978. for his

  979. house as I

  980. have.

  981. The

  982. clampets are

  983. always going

  984. on exotic

  985. vacation.

  986. My exotic

  987. trip is to the

  988. garden section

  989. at Walmart.

  990. Math is

  991. easy when

  992. you're a

  993. teacher's pet

  994. like Ellie

  995. May.

  996. We all

  997. face real

  998. or perceived

  999. that puts

  1000. us issues,

  1001. we all face

  1002. issues that

  1003. real or

  1004. perceived that

  1005. put us at a

  1006. disadvantage to

  1007. someone else.

  1008. The most

  1009. dangerous result

  1010. is when we

  1011. focus on what

  1012. others have

  1013. and not on

  1014. the fact that

  1015. as believers in

  1016. Christ, this

  1017. world is not

  1018. your home.

  1019. This lifetime

  1020. is the period

  1021. in which we

  1022. make an

  1023. eternal decision

  1024. about eternity.

  1025. After they

  1026. died,

  1027. sore-infested

  1028. beggar Lazarus

  1029. and the rich

  1030. man fell

  1031. out,

  1032. when the rich

  1033. man in

  1034. hell was in

  1035. torment,

  1036. begging for a

  1037. drop of water

  1038. to cool his

  1039. tongue.

  1040. After the last

  1041. week, we can

  1042. imagine that.

  1043. And Lazarus

  1044. was comforted

  1045. by Abraham.

  1046. So that's the

  1047. result of the

  1048. choices they

  1049. made.

  1050. Owning money,

  1051. possessions,

  1052. is neither good

  1053. nor bad.

  1054. What we do

  1055. with them is

  1056. the key.

  1057. More,

  1058. bigger,

  1059. faster,

  1060. newer.

  1061. These are all

  1062. reasons for

  1063. jealousy.

  1064. Contentment

  1065. is what God

  1066. wants us to

  1067. strive for.

  1068. This is not

  1069. easy.

  1070. It's harder

  1071. to see

  1072. somebody have

  1073. stuff when

  1074. we don't,

  1075. or it's not

  1076. fair because

  1077. they don't

  1078. have this.

  1079. You'll notice

  1080. in the last

  1081. five commandments,

  1082. descend in

  1083. severity.

  1084. You know,

  1085. stuff in your

  1086. mind, in your

  1087. heart is less

  1088. severe than

  1089. murder.

  1090. Jealousy is

  1091. not seen as a

  1092. crime to go to

  1093. jail for,

  1094. but murder

  1095. is.

  1096. We all

  1097. grade ourselves

  1098. on what we

  1099. have done,

  1100. so not

  1101. murdering your

  1102. sibling as a

  1103. youth is a

  1104. great accomplishment,

  1105. isn't it?

  1106. But also

  1107. notice, as the

  1108. severity descends,

  1109. the possibility

  1110. to commit these

  1111. sins increases.

  1112. Not many of

  1113. in this room

  1114. have ever

  1115. committed murder,

  1116. I hope.

  1117. but the idea

  1118. of coveting,

  1119. the idea

  1120. of gossiping,

  1121. that's, you

  1122. know, for a

  1123. lot of us,

  1124. that's a daily

  1125. activity.

  1126. I would not

  1127. kill to have

  1128. another half

  1129. section of

  1130. land, but if

  1131. it were mine,

  1132. not Jed's,

  1133. just think of

  1134. what I could do

  1135. with it.

  1136. when we

  1137. grade ourselves,

  1138. we can have

  1139. excuses for

  1140. each and

  1141. every breaking

  1142. of the Ten

  1143. Commandments.

  1144. Again, in

  1145. Romans, Romans

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  1146. chapter 7,

  1147. Paul states,

  1148. what shall we

  1149. say then?

  1150. Is law

  1151. sinful?

  1152. Certainly not.

  1153. Nevertheless,

  1154. I would not

  1155. have known

  1156. what sin

  1157. was had it

  1158. not been

  1159. for the law.

  1160. For I would

  1161. not have known

  1162. what coveting

  1163. was if the

  1164. law had not

  1165. said, you

  1166. shall not

  1167. covet.

  1168. But sin,

  1169. seizing the

  1170. opportunity

  1171. afforded by

  1172. the commandment,

  1173. produced in

  1174. me every

  1175. kind of

  1176. coveting.

  1177. for apart

  1178. from the

  1179. law, sin

  1180. was dead.

  1181. Once I was

  1182. alive apart

  1183. from the

  1184. law, but

  1185. when the

  1186. commandment

  1187. came, sin

  1188. sprang to

  1189. life and

  1190. I died.

  1191. I found

  1192. that the

  1193. very commandment

  1194. that was

  1195. intended to

  1196. bring life

  1197. actually brought

  1198. death.

  1199. For sin,

  1200. seizing the

  1201. opportunity

  1202. afforded by

  1203. the commandment,

  1204. deceived me

  1205. and through

  1206. the commandment

  1207. put me to

  1208. death.

  1209. And this

  1210. next, verse

  1211. 15 in

  1212. Romans 7

  1213. is me,

  1214. is me.

  1215. I do not

  1216. understand what

  1217. I do.

  1218. For what I

  1219. want to do,

  1220. I do not

  1221. do.

  1222. But what I

  1223. hate, I

  1224. do.

  1225. That is

  1226. so much

  1227. me.

  1228. Yes, I

  1229. want to do

  1230. the right

  1231. thing, but I'm

  1232. tempted to do

  1233. the wrong

  1234. thing.

  1235. Wow.

  1236. How relevant

  1237. are the

  1238. Old Testament

  1239. laws.

  1240. If God

  1241. had not

  1242. laid them

  1243. out, we

  1244. would have

  1245. an excuse

  1246. to say

  1247. that judgment

  1248. is not

  1249. fair.

  1250. Most of

  1251. us are

  1252. much better

  1253. than we

  1254. are evil.

  1255. Maybe only

  1256. Hitler, Stalin

  1257. and mass

  1258. murderers and

  1259. the likes

  1260. should spend

  1261. eternity in

  1262. the judgment

  1263. for hell

  1264. for eternity.

  1265. But when

  1266. we look at

  1267. the Ten

  1268. Commandments

  1269. and other

  1270. applicable

  1271. laws from

  1272. the books

  1273. that Moses

  1274. wrote, we

  1275. see that we

  1276. have all

  1277. broken, all

  1278. of them, if

  1279. not physically,

  1280. then at least

  1281. mentally.

  1282. Isaiah 64

  1283. makes it

  1284. clear.

  1285. All of us

  1286. have become

  1287. like one who

  1288. is unclean.

  1289. All our

  1290. righteous acts

  1291. are like

  1292. filthy rags.

  1293. We all

  1294. shrivel up

  1295. like a leaf,

  1296. and the wind

  1297. our sins

  1298. sweep us

  1299. away.

  1300. Yeah, we

  1301. are all,

  1302. our actions

  1303. are like

  1304. filthy rags

  1305. to God.

  1306. Revelations

  1307. 21.8

  1308. is this

  1309. dark list

  1310. of all

  1311. who will

  1312. be separated

  1313. from God

  1314. and spend

  1315. an eternity

  1316. in judgment

  1317. of God

  1318. in hell.

  1319. Verse 20,

  1320. chapter 21.8

  1321. But the

  1322. cowardly,

  1323. the unbelieving,

  1324. the vile,

  1325. the murderers,

  1326. the sexually

  1327. immoral,

  1328. those who

  1329. practice magic

  1330. arts,

  1331. the idolaters,

  1332. and all

  1333. liars,

  1334. they will be

  1335. consigned to

  1336. the fiery

  1337. lake of

  1338. burning sulfur.

  1339. This is

  1340. the second

  1341. death.

  1342. That list

  1343. is contained

  1344. and is

  1345. covered in

  1346. the Ten

  1347. Commandments

  1348. in some

  1349. form or

  1350. other.

  1351. This,

  1352. to us,

  1353. would be

  1354. totally

  1355. devastating

  1356. except for

  1357. one eternal

  1358. fact.

  1359. God

  1360. wants

  1361. no one

  1362. ever

  1363. to face

  1364. this

  1365. judgment.

  1366. He hates

  1367. sin

  1368. but loves

  1369. the ones

  1370. he created.

  1371. Romans

  1372. 6.23

  1373. makes it

  1374. clear.

  1375. For the

  1376. wages of

  1377. sin is

  1378. death,

  1379. but the

  1380. gift of

  1381. God is

  1382. eternal life

  1383. in Christ

  1384. Jesus our

  1385. Lord.

  1386. Nothing

  1387. we can

  1388. do,

  1389. say,

  1390. pay,

  1391. is

  1392. anything

  1393. more than

  1394. a filthy

  1395. rag to

  1396. God.

  1397. He is

  1398. very clear

  1399. in the

  1400. rules that

  1401. we must

  1402. live by.

  1403. John

  1404. 3.16

  1405. to 18

  1406. makes it

  1407. clear that

  1408. faith in

  1409. Jesus is

  1410. the one

  1411. true answer

  1412. to the

  1413. impossible

  1414. task of

  1415. following the

  1416. Ten

  1417. Commandments.

  1418. For God

  1419. so loved

  1420. the world

  1421. that he

  1422. gave his

  1423. one and

  1424. only son

  1425. that whoever

  1426. believes in

  1427. him shall

  1428. not perish

  1429. but have

  1430. eternal life.

  1431. For God

  1432. did not send

  1433. his son

  1434. into the

  1435. world to

  1436. condemn the

  1437. world,

  1438. but to

  1439. save the

  1440. world

  1441. through him.

  1442. Whoever

  1443. believes in

  1444. him is

  1445. not condemned,

  1446. but whoever

  1447. does not

  1448. believe

  1449. stands

  1450. condemned

  1451. already

  1452. because they

  1453. have not

  1454. believed in

  1455. the name

  1456. of God's

  1457. one and

  1458. only son.

  1459. No

  1460. excuse.

  1461. No

  1462. excuse.

  1463. Now is

  1464. the time

  1465. when we

  1466. see how

  1467. relevant

  1468. God

  1469. views the

  1470. Ten

  1471. Commandments.

  1472. Before us

  1473. is the

  1474. communion

  1475. table.

  1476. Partaking

  1477. of these

  1478. simple

  1479. sacraments,

  1480. the bread

  1481. representing

  1482. his body,

  1483. the blood

  1484. his life

  1485. reminds us

  1486. of what

  1487. Jesus did

  1488. for us

  1489. by dying

  1490. in our

  1491. place.

  1492. Believers

  1493. are no

  1494. longer held

  1495. guilty of

  1496. breaking the

  1497. laws of

  1498. God,

  1499. but this

  1500. is a

  1501. time to

  1502. examine and

  1503. measure our

  1504. styles by

  1505. the Ten

  1506. Commandments.

  1507. God knows

  1508. no one is

  1509. perfect,

  1510. but he wants

  1511. us to confess

  1512. to him our

  1513. wrongdoings

  1514. and make

  1515. amends

  1516. where we

  1517. can.

  1518. Christ's

  1519. substitutionary

  1520. death is

  1521. available to

  1522. everyone,

  1523. but applies

  1524. only to

  1525. those who

  1526. believe he

  1527. died in

  1528. our place

  1529. and verbally

  1530. acknowledge him

  1531. as the

  1532. holy God.

  1533. So as we

  1534. pass out the

  1535. sacraments,

  1536. then if

  1537. you don't

  1538. feel you

  1539. are a

  1540. believer at

  1541. this time,

  1542. just pass

  1543. them by.

  1544. It's not

  1545. good to

  1546. take them

  1547. if that's

  1548. really not

  1549. what you

  1550. believe.

  1551. So we'll

  1552. just take

  1553. before we

  1554. pass out

  1555. the sacraments,

  1556. we're just

  1557. going to take

  1558. a few minutes.

  1559. Examine

  1560. yourself.

  1561. We know

  1562. what the

  1563. Ten

  1564. Commandments

  1565. talks about.

  1566. We know

  1567. where we

  1568. grade on

  1569. that scale,

  1570. but now

  1571. is a time

  1572. to really

  1573. reflect.

  1574. And to

  1575. really

  1576. appreciate

  1577. Christ's

  1578. sacrifice.

  1579. That he

  1580. died for

  1581. us.

  1582. He took

  1583. our death.

  1584. So we'll

  1585. just, in a

  1586. few minutes,

  1587. we'll ask the

  1588. two men to

  1589. come up and

  1590. pass them

  1591. out.

  1592. But just

  1593. take a few

  1594. minutes to

  1595. think about

  1596. what this

  1597. means.

  1598. Thank you.

  1599. God

  1600. God,

  1601. God,

  1602. say,

  1603. God,

  1604. God,

  1605. him,

  1606. go here.
