  1. Well, it's been about two and a half months since I preached a sermon, and while I enjoyed

  2. having a break from weekly sermon prep over the summer, I'm also excited to be back at

  3. it this Sunday and to open the Word of God together with you.

  4. This thing that we do right here every Sunday morning is arguably the most important thing

  5. that we do together as a church.

  6. And I'll say more about why this is later, because our passage this morning is actually

  7. going to speak to this.

  8. We're once again picking up the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy, Paul's second letter

  9. to Timothy, and quite likely one of Paul's last letters written.

  10. If you remember from earlier this year, Paul at the time of this writing is in prison, and

  11. he is very near the end.

  12. History has it that not long after this, he was executed in Rome.

  13. And so these are like Paul's last words.

  14. And you can hear it.

  15. You can feel it, even as you read through this letter.

  16. These are the words of a man who knows his days are numbered.

  17. And he's writing to encourage and instruct the younger man, Timothy, who is right now serving

  18. as a leader in and around the church of Ephesus.

  19. Now I'm not going to recap the whole letter for us this morning, but I would encourage you

  20. to have a read through it again this week.

  21. My last message back in June was on chapter 3, verses 10 to 15, and so I'm going to read

  22. verses 10 to 17 for us this morning.

  23. And then we'll continue on from verse 15 to the end of the chapter.

  24. So 2 Timothy chapter 3, we're picking it up in verse 10.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  25. You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience,

  26. love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings.

  27. What kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra, the persecutions I endured,

  28. yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.

  29. In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while

  30. evildoers and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  31. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know

  32. those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures,

  33. which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

  34. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training

  35. in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  36. So the first thing we hear Paul do is to encourage Timothy with the example of his own life.

  37. You know my teaching.

  38. You know my life.

  39. You know my purpose, and so on.

  40. His main point here is something like,

  41. Timothy, you can trust me.

  42. Unlike the evildoers and imposters of our day, you know me.

  43. You know I am the real deal.

  44. You know that my life and my teaching match.

  45. And then here he points out another trustworthy source for Timothy.

  46. In contrast to the religious imposters and pretenders of Timothy's day who cannot be trusted, there

  47. is a source of truth that can be relied on, which can be trusted, and it is the holy scriptures.

  48. This is what Paul is referring to when he says,

  49. Continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of.

  50. What you have known from childhood.

  51. The holy scriptures.

  52. And it's worth mentioning here, Paul mentions it.

  53. How did Timothy learn the truth that is in the holy scriptures?

  54. He says,

  55. Because you know those from whom you learned it,

  56. and how from infancy you have known the holy scriptures.

  57. Who did Timothy learn the holy scriptures from,

  58. from the time that he was a little child?

  59. The answer is in chapter 1, verse 5,

  60. right at the beginning of the letter.

  61. It says there,

  62. I am reminded of your sincere faith, Timothy,

  63. which first lived in your grandmother, Lois,

  64. and in your mother, Eunice,

  65. and I am persuaded now lives in you also.

  66. So Timothy learned and became convinced of the truth in the holy scriptures

  67. because his grandmother and his mother taught them to him.

  68. They had sincere faith in God,

  69. and so they did what God commanded,

  70. and they taught the holy scriptures to Timothy.

  71. This is to be further confirmation to Timothy.

  72. Because you know those from whom you learned it.

  73. Again, it's not just Paul,

  74. who has been a godly example worth following,

  75. but look at your own mother,

  76. and your grandmother, Timothy.

  77. They too are the real deal.

  78. And you can trust what they taught you since you were a child,

  79. because look at how their lives match their message.

  80. Unlike with these imposters we are seeing around us.

  81. Do you hear this?

  82. The life of Timothy's mom and his grandma have become like anchors for Timothy

  83. in the storm that he now finds himself in.

  84. Many are turning away from Paul.

  85. Imposters and false teachers are arising.

  86. But Paul tells Timothy to look at the example of faith in his mother and grandmother

  87. and be reminded that the holy scriptures that they taught him are true.

  88. Now, I know this is a tangent that I'm about to go on,

  89. but it is worth mentioning here.

  90. Are parents responsible to teach their children the holy scriptures?

  91. Are parents responsible to teach their children the truth about God?

  92. Are they responsible to exhort them to have faith in God and to follow God?

  93. Two passages have been on my mind in the past several weeks.

  94. First, there is what God said to the Israelites long ago in the Old Testament law.

  95. Deuteronomy 6, verse 4.

    Deuteronomy 6:4

  96. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  97. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

  98. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts,

  99. impress them on your children.

  100. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road,

  101. when you lie down and when you get up.

  102. So God commanded the Israelites long ago to teach their children his commands.

  103. And not just once a week, but all throughout the course of the day

  104. and throughout the various activities of the day.

  105. Back in the Old Testament, that's what God commanded.

  106. And then as we look to the New Testament,

  107. this is what Paul himself wrote about this to the church at Ephesus.

  108. I'm reading from Ephesians chapter 6.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  109. He writes there,

  110. The first commandmentist,

  111. honor your father and mother,

  112. which is the first commandment with a promise,

  113. so that it may go well with you

  114. and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

  115. Fathers, do not exasperate your children.

  116. Instead, bring them up in the training

  117. and the instruction of the Lord.

  118. Now, it's easy for us who are fathers

  119. to get focused in on that word, exasperate,

  120. and we get thinking about our interactions with our children.

  121. And have I been patient with them?

  122. Have I been given to anger with them?

  123. Have I been putting on them a load of expectation

  124. that even I couldn't carry when I was his age?

  125. And these are great questions to ask.

  126. For us who are fathers.

  127. But let's not miss the rest of the verse here.

  128. That's what we should not do.

  129. We should not exasperate our children.

  130. But what should we do?

  131. Do not exasperate your children.

  132. Instead, bring them up in the training

  133. and instruction of the Lord.

  134. Are parents responsible to teach their children

  135. the Holy Scriptures?

  136. Yes.

  137. Are parents responsible to teach their children

  138. the truth about God

  139. and exhort their children to have faith in him

  140. and to follow him?

  141. Yes.

  142. And not just parents,

  143. but us who are fathers.

  144. This has been charged to us

  145. by Christ.

  146. This task is ours.

  147. And we notice what it does not say here.

  148. It does not say,

  149. Fathers,

  150. bring your children to church

  151. so that Pastor Josh

  152. and the alive teachers

  153. can bring them up

  154. in the training

  155. and instruction of the Lord.

  156. It says,

  157. Fathers,

  158. you do this

  159. for your own children.

  160. And yes,

  161. part of that will include

  162. bringing your children to church

  163. and to alive

  164. and to youth group.

  165. But the bulk of that responsibility

  166. is on your shoulders,

  167. Dad.

  168. And of course,

  169. there are situations

  170. when this doesn't happen.

  171. Maybe Dad isn't a believer,

  172. but maybe Mom is.

  173. Or maybe neither of the parents are.

  174. And this is why it's important

  175. for us to do things

  176. like alive

  177. in our church

  178. for the children.

  179. In fact,

  180. we notice that Paul

  181. does not even mention

  182. Timothy's father

  183. as an example to follow.

  184. It's the sincere faith

  185. of his mother

  186. and grandmother.

  187. But where was Timothy's dad?

  188. Timothy's dad was a Greek,

  189. but it would seem

  190. that he was not a believing Greek.

  191. And so his mother

  192. and grandmother

  193. taught him the scriptures

  194. and taught him to know

  195. and love the Lord.

  196. What are you doing

  197. in your household

  198. not just to encourage,

  199. but to bring up your children

  200. in the training

  201. and instruction

  202. of the Lord?

  203. this is going to require

  204. more than just telling them,

  205. son,

  206. read your Bible every day

  207. and believe it.

  208. If you have children

  209. at home with you,

  210. I strongly encourage you

  211. to consider

  212. incorporating

  213. some kind of family

  214. devotional time

  215. into your family routine.

  216. Donald Whitney,

  217. a professor

  218. at Southern Baptist

  219. Theological Seminary,

  220. has written this

  221. wonderfully brief

  222. and helpful

  223. little book

  224. called

  225. Family Worship.

  226. And it's a fantastic

  227. starting place

  228. if you've never done

  229. anything like this before.

  230. He says it can be

  231. as simple as

  232. read,

  233. pray,

  234. and sing.

  235. each day

  236. to read a passage

  237. of Scripture together

  238. from the Scriptures,

  239. pray together

  240. for a few minutes,

  241. and sing a song

  242. of praise together.

  243. Even ten minutes

  244. a day

  245. after supper

  246. is a great place

  247. to start.

  248. And as you get into this

  249. with your kids,

  250. it may not seem natural

  251. or rich at first,

  252. but stick with it.

  253. You're creating

  254. the time

  255. and the space

  256. and the place

  257. for conversations

  258. about the Lord Jesus

  259. to happen.

  260. And questions

  261. may arise

  262. as you read

  263. the Scriptures together

  264. and you may not

  265. be a gifted teacher,

  266. but you can explain

  267. to your kids

  268. what you think

  269. God is saying

  270. in a passage

  271. and how we should live

  272. in obedience to it.

  273. Fathers,

  274. this is your responsibility

  275. to lead

  276. in this.

  277. And if you want

  278. to get started

  279. with something

  280. and have no idea

  281. what to do,

  282. come and talk to me

  283. and we'll get you

  284. a copy of this

  285. wonderfully brief

  286. little book

  287. to help you

  288. get started.

  289. But back to the

  290. main point here

  291. and Paul's

  292. letter to Timothy.

  293. Here in

  294. 2 Timothy 3

    2 Timothy 3:15

  295. verse 15

  296. he says,

  297. continue in what

  298. you have learned

  299. and have become

  300. convinced of

  301. because you know

  302. those from whom

  303. you learned it

  304. and how from

  305. infancy

  306. you have known

  307. the Holy

  308. Scriptures

  309. which are able

  310. to make you

  311. wise

  312. for salvation

  313. through faith

  314. in Christ

  315. Jesus.

  316. There's two

  317. things we want

  318. to see here.

  319. First,

  320. what are

  321. the Holy

  322. Scriptures?

  323. What are

  324. the Scriptures

  325. that Paul is

  326. talking about?

  327. And second,

  328. what does trusting

  329. these Scriptures

  330. do for a

  331. person?

  332. So let's

  333. tackle that

  334. first one.

  335. What are

  336. the Holy

  337. Scriptures?

  338. Which Scriptures

  339. is Paul

  340. talking about?

  341. Notice,

  342. Paul says

  343. that Timothy

  344. has known

  345. these Holy

  346. Scriptures

  347. from infancy.

  348. From infancy

  349. you have known

  350. the Holy

  351. Scriptures.

  352. And if we

  353. think through

  354. the chronology

  355. given us

  356. in the book

  357. of Acts

  358. and how

  359. Timothy

  360. was old

  361. enough to

  362. understand

  363. and witness

  364. the sufferings

  365. of Paul

  366. when Paul

  367. first came

  368. through Lystra

  369. with the

  370. Gospel,

  371. these Holy

  372. Scriptures

  373. Paul is

  374. referring to

  375. are undoubtedly

  376. the Old

  377. Testament

  378. Scriptures

  379. which

  380. Timothy's

  381. Jewish

  382. mother would

  383. have taught

  384. him.

  385. I mean,

  386. the New

  387. Testament

  388. Scriptures

  389. hadn't even

  390. been written

  391. yet when

  392. Timothy

  393. was a

  394. child.

  395. And by

  396. this time,

  397. the time of

  398. this second

  399. letter to

  400. Timothy,

  401. only some

  402. of the New

  403. Testament

  404. Scriptures

  405. had been

  406. written.

  407. This letter

  408. is a part

  409. of them.

  410. Another way

  411. to say all

  412. this,

  413. Timothy's

  414. Bible

  415. growing up

  416. was only

  417. the Old

  418. Testament.

  419. That's the

  420. specific

  421. Scriptures

  422. in view

  423. as Paul

  424. tells

  425. Timothy

  426. here to

  427. remember

  428. the truth

  429. that he

  430. has learned

  431. and become

  432. convinced of

  433. from the

  434. Holy

  435. Scriptures.

  436. And this

  437. becomes

  438. especially

  439. important

  440. as we

  441. get to

  442. verse 16

  443. where Paul

  444. says,

  445. all Scripture

  446. is God

  447. breathed

  448. and is

  449. useful for

  450. teaching

  451. and rebuking

  452. and correcting

  453. and training

  454. in righteousness.

  455. All Scripture

  456. includes

  457. the Old

  458. Testament.

  459. In context

  460. here for

  461. Timothy,

  462. it was

  463. primarily

  464. the Old

  465. Testament

  466. Scriptures.

  467. So let's

  468. consider now

  469. the second

  470. thing that we

  471. want to see

  472. here.

  473. What does

  474. trusting these

  475. Scriptures

  476. do for a

  477. person?

  478. how from

  479. infancy

  480. you have

  481. known

  482. the Holy

  483. Scriptures

  484. which are

  485. able to

  486. make you

  487. wise

  488. for salvation

  489. through

  490. faith

  491. in Christ

  492. Jesus.

  493. We notice

  494. the care

  495. that Paul

  496. takes in

  497. his wording

  498. here.

  499. He does

  500. not say

  501. that the

  502. Old Testament

  503. Scriptures

  504. are what

  505. saves you

  506. by believing

  507. in them.

  508. He does

  509. say that

  510. they are

  511. able to

  512. make you

  513. wise

  514. for salvation

  515. through faith

  516. in Christ

  517. Jesus.

  518. So it's

  519. faith in

  520. Christ

  521. Jesus

  522. that brings

  523. salvation.

  524. Believing

  525. in Jesus

  526. Christ is

  527. what we

  528. must do

  529. to be

  530. saved.

  531. And the

  532. Old Testament

  533. did not

  534. reveal Jesus

  535. because he

  536. hadn't come

  537. yet.

  538. But the

  539. Old Testament

  540. laid the

  541. foundation

  542. salvation for

  543. Timothy.

  544. It prepared

  545. him to

  546. understand

  547. and receive

  548. Christ Jesus

  549. by faith

  550. when he

  551. came.

  552. So the

  553. Old Testament

  554. Scriptures can

  555. make us

  556. wise about

  557. how to be

  558. saved because

  559. they point

  560. forward to

  561. the Savior,

  562. the Christ.

  563. Christ.

  564. So in

  565. ten years

  566. when Paul

  567. is dead

  568. and

  569. Timothy

  570. perhaps is

  571. in jail

  572. and false

  573. teachers

  574. and impostors

  575. and wicked

  576. men are

  577. surrounding

  578. him like a

  579. pack of

  580. dogs hungry

  581. for his

  582. blood

  583. and when

  584. the judge

  585. gives

  586. Timothy the

  587. option to

  588. renounce his

  589. faith in

  590. Jesus,

  591. what does

  592. Paul want

  593. Timothy to

  594. do in

  595. those moments

  596. when doubts

  597. may arise?

  598. Remember

  599. the Holy

  600. Scriptures

  601. which you

  602. learned from

  603. your mom

  604. and your

  605. grandma.

  606. Remember

  607. the holy

  608. words of

  609. our God.

  610. It was

  611. he who

  612. made all

  613. these wonderful

  614. promises

  615. concerning the

  616. Christ through

  617. Moses and

  618. the prophets.

  619. it was

  620. he who

  621. foreshadowed

  622. it how

  623. things would

  624. go with

  625. Jesus Christ

  626. hundreds and

  627. thousands of

  628. years prior in

  629. the lives of

  630. men like

  631. Joseph,

  632. David,

  633. Solomon,

  634. Daniel,

  635. and in the

  636. ordinances of

  637. Israel with

  638. the Passover

  639. and the

  640. sacrifices,

  641. it was God

  642. who foretold

  643. the rising

  644. of his chosen

  645. king from

  646. the dead.

  647. if doubt

  648. gets a hold

  649. of you,

  650. Timothy,

  651. shake it

  652. off by

  653. going back

  654. to that

  655. which we

  656. can be

  657. confident in,

  658. the holy

  659. words of

  660. God which

  661. announced and

  662. declared and

  663. foretold and

  664. foreshadowed this

  665. good news of

  666. Jesus coming

  667. for salvation

  668. long before we

  669. were even

  670. born.

  671. The Old

  672. Testament is

  673. able to

  674. make us

  675. wise for

  676. salvation,

  677. specifically the

  678. salvation that

  679. comes through

  680. faith in

  681. Christ Jesus.

  682. And this

  683. actually makes a

  684. lot of sense

  685. when we stop

  686. to think about

  687. it.

  688. Where do we

  689. first come to

  690. learn about

  691. sin?

  692. The Old

  693. Testament.

  694. Where do we

  695. first learn that

  696. our sin warrants

  697. punishment because

  698. God is just?

  699. The Old

  700. Testament

  701. Scriptures.

  702. Where do we

  703. also hear that

  704. God is merciful and

  705. that he forgives

  706. sin?

  707. The Old

  708. Testament.

  709. Where do we

  710. first learn that

  711. forgiveness of

  712. sins can only

  713. come through a

  714. blood sacrifice?

  715. The Old

  716. Testament

  717. Scriptures.

  718. Where do we

  719. first learn that

  720. there's going to

  721. be a forever

  722. kingdom for the

  723. people of God?

  724. The Old

  725. Testament

  726. Scriptures.

  727. And I could

  728. go on for a

  729. long time here,

  730. but I think you

  731. get the point.

  732. And so we

  733. must not

  734. neglect the

  735. Old Testament

  736. Scriptures.

  737. This is why we

  738. are crazy enough

  739. here in our

  740. church to take

  741. two out of

  742. every three

  743. years with

  744. our kids

  745. in alive

  746. to work

  747. through the

  748. Old Testament.

  749. It is the

  750. foundation

  751. for the

  752. Gospel.

  753. The Old

  754. Testament

  755. Scriptures

  756. are able to

  757. make our

  758. kids wise

  759. for salvation

  760. through faith in

  761. Jesus Christ.

  762. They are able to

  763. prepare the

  764. heart and

  765. mind to

  766. understand what's

  767. going on so

  768. that by the time

  769. we come to the

  770. New Testament,

  771. we understand,

  772. we appreciate

  773. why we need

  774. Jesus in the

  775. first place.

  776. In fact,

  777. I will be so

  778. bold as to

  779. say that

  780. even for the

  781. adult who

  782. has grown up

  783. never going to

  784. church,

  785. half of what's

  786. in the Gospels,

  787. Matthew,

  788. Mark,

  789. Luke,

  790. and John,

  791. half of it

  792. doesn't even

  793. make sense.

  794. unless you

  795. know what's

  796. in the Old

  797. Testament.

  798. Let us

  799. not neglect

  800. the Old

  801. Testament.

  802. Oh,

  803. but I'm

  804. already saved,

  805. Pastor Josh.

  806. I believe in

  807. Jesus.

  808. I've learned

  809. what I need

  810. to from the

  811. Old Testament

  812. and now I

  813. just mostly

  814. read the

  815. New Testament.

  816. But wait,

  817. Paul has

  818. more to say

  819. here.

  820. All Scripture

  821. is God

  822. breathed,

  823. he says.

  824. All includes

  825. the Old

  826. Testament.

  827. And all

  828. of it

  829. is useful

  830. for teaching,

  831. rebuking,

  832. correcting,

  833. and training

  834. in righteousness

  835. so that the

  836. servant of God

  837. may be

  838. thoroughly

  839. equipped

  840. for every

  841. good work.

  842. God

  843. So the

  844. Old Testament

  845. doesn't only

  846. make us

  847. wise for

  848. salvation,

  849. it too

  850. is part

  851. of the

  852. All Scripture

  853. that is

  854. useful.

  855. It's not

  856. irrelevant

  857. to our

  858. lives today.

  859. All Scripture,

  860. even the

  861. Old Testament

  862. is useful

  863. to us

  864. today.

  865. It's useful

  866. for teaching

  867. us,

  868. teaching us

  869. about who

  870. God is

  871. and who

  872. we are

  873. and what's

  874. happening

  875. in the

  876. grand story

  877. of our

  878. world.

  879. It's useful

  880. for rebuking

  881. and correcting.

  882. And because

  883. all of us

  884. are sinners

  885. and are

  886. still tempted

  887. by many

  888. things and

  889. even fall

  890. into sin

  891. or stray

  892. from God's

  893. ways,

  894. we need

  895. rebuking

  896. and correcting

  897. at times.

  898. And the

  899. Old Testament

  900. in particular

  901. is a

  902. treasure trove

  903. of divine

  904. material

  905. perfectly

  906. suited

  907. to helping

  908. us see

  909. the error

  910. in our

  911. ways

  912. and the

  913. path

  914. back to

  915. God.

  916. And there's

  917. more.

  918. All Scripture

  919. is useful,

  920. even the

  921. Old Testament,

  922. for training

  923. in righteousness.

  924. Do you

  925. want to know

  926. how to live

  927. a righteous

  928. life as a

  929. follower of

  930. Jesus today

  931. in 2024?

  932. All Scripture,

  933. even the

  934. Old Testament,

  935. is useful

  936. for training

  937. us how.

  938. All Scripture,

  939. even the

  940. Old Testament,

  941. is useful

  942. so that the

  943. servant of

  944. God may be

  945. thoroughly

  946. equipped,

  947. for every

  948. good work,

  949. writes Paul.

  950. Do you

  951. want to be

  952. thoroughly

  953. equipped for

  954. every good

  955. work?

  956. Do you

  957. want to have

  958. just what you

  959. need from

  960. God to do

  961. the many good

  962. things that he

  963. would like you

  964. to do in

  965. life?

  966. All of

  967. this is

  968. useful for

  969. God's

  970. God's

  971. God's

  972. God's

  973. God's

  974. God's

  975. life

  976. situations

  977. and

  978. circumstances.

  979. Even the

  980. Old Testament.

  981. Let's just

  982. camp for a

  983. moment on the

  984. word all

  985. here.

  986. All Scripture

  987. is God-breathed

  988. and is useful

  989. for these

  990. good purposes

  991. in our lives.

  992. All Scripture

  993. includes the

  994. history of

  995. Genesis and

  996. how our

  997. world began.

  998. All Scripture

  999. includes the

  1000. commands God

  1001. gave in the

  1002. law through

  1003. Moses.

  1004. It includes

  1005. the details of

  1006. the various

  1007. covenants that

  1008. God has made

  1009. with man.

  1010. All Scripture

  1011. includes the

  1012. prayers and the

  1013. poetry of the

  1014. Bible, the

  1015. songs and the

  1016. Psalms.

  1017. Psalms.

  1018. There once

  1019. was a

  1020. Christian man

  1021. who said

  1022. to me,

  1023. I hate

  1024. the Psalms.

  1025. There's too

  1026. much expression

  1027. of feelings

  1028. in them that

  1029. I just

  1030. can't relate

  1031. to.

  1032. But they

  1033. too are

  1034. God-breathed

  1035. and are

  1036. useful to

  1037. teach us,

  1038. correct us,

  1039. train us,

  1040. and equip us.

  1041. All Scripture

  1042. includes the

  1043. book of

  1044. Ruth and

  1045. the book of

  1046. Esther.

  1047. Sometimes we

  1048. men would

  1049. rather read

  1050. about David

  1051. and his

  1052. mighty men

  1053. fighting battles

  1054. against the

  1055. uncircumcised

  1056. Philistines.

  1057. But God has

  1058. something useful

  1059. to us in

  1060. Ruth and

  1061. Esther as

  1062. well.

  1063. In Job

  1064. and in some

  1065. of those

  1066. difficult books

  1067. written by the

  1068. prophets,

  1069. all Scripture

  1070. even includes

  1071. the lists and

  1072. numbers and

  1073. genealogies of

  1074. the Bible as

  1075. our brother

  1076. Nate reminded

  1077. us of last

  1078. Sunday.

  1079. We may have

  1080. our preferences

  1081. we may have

  1082. our favorite

  1083. passages and

  1084. even genres

  1085. in the Bible

  1086. but we should

  1087. choose to

  1088. love all

  1089. of the

  1090. Scriptures.

  1091. Old Testament

  1092. and new,

  1093. poetry and

  1094. prose.

  1095. May we not

  1096. neglect any

  1097. of it for the

  1098. reason that we

  1099. think it's

  1100. irrelevant or

  1101. boring.

  1102. Paul is

  1103. telling us

  1104. right here that

  1105. it's not.

  1106. We just

  1107. haven't seen

  1108. perhaps or

  1109. appreciated

  1110. what God

  1111. has there

  1112. in a

  1113. particular

  1114. passage for

  1115. us yet.

  1116. How many

  1117. of you have

  1118. ever spent

  1119. money on

  1120. tools?

  1121. Maybe a

  1122. saw or a

  1123. drill, a

  1124. wrench, a

  1125. pair of

  1126. pliers, a

  1127. hammer?

  1128. Many of us

  1129. have at least

  1130. one toolbox

  1131. full of tools.

  1132. Some of you

  1133. I know have

  1134. entire sheds

  1135. and even shops

  1136. full of

  1137. them and

  1138. tools are

  1139. awesome because

  1140. sometimes you

  1141. need just the

  1142. right device to

  1143. fix something or

  1144. to build

  1145. something, to

  1146. get the job

  1147. done or that

  1148. project finished.

  1149. Wouldn't it be

  1150. awesome though if

  1151. instead of going

  1152. to home hardware

  1153. to get another

  1154. tool every time

  1155. that you do

  1156. something new,

  1157. wouldn't it be

  1158. awesome if you

  1159. could just get a

  1160. toolbox that

  1161. has every tool

  1162. you'd ever need

  1163. in it for the

  1164. rest of your

  1165. life?

  1166. Wouldn't it be

  1167. awesome if the

  1168. toolbox was only

  1169. this big?

  1170. That's essentially

  1171. what Jesus is

  1172. saying to us

  1173. here.

  1174. all scripture

  1175. is God

  1176. breathed

  1177. and is useful

  1178. so that you

  1179. might be

  1180. thoroughly

  1181. equipped

  1182. for every

  1183. good work.

  1184. Every

  1185. good thing

  1186. that God

  1187. wants you to

  1188. do in your

  1189. life, every

  1190. one of them,

  1191. what you need

  1192. to do every

  1193. one of those

  1194. things, the

  1195. equipment you

  1196. need is right

  1197. here in the

  1198. holy breathed

  1199. writings, the

  1200. holy God

  1201. breathed

  1202. writings, the

  1203. scriptures that

  1204. he has given

  1205. us.

  1206. We tend to

  1207. underestimate the

  1208. value, not

  1209. just of the

  1210. Old Testament

  1211. writings, but

  1212. of this entire

  1213. book.

  1214. I mean, it

  1215. almost sounds

  1216. too good to be

  1217. true, doesn't

  1218. it?

  1219. Can a single

  1220. book, a

  1221. single collection

  1222. of writings be

  1223. the perfect

  1224. multi-tool for

  1225. all of life's

  1226. work?

  1227. can it be the

  1228. toolbox with

  1229. no bottom,

  1230. having just the

  1231. thing we need

  1232. for all of

  1233. life's moments

  1234. and situations?

  1235. That's what

  1236. Jesus is telling

  1237. us here

  1238. through Paul.

  1239. Believe it

  1240. so that the

  1241. servant of God,

  1242. man of God,

  1243. may be thoroughly

  1244. equipped for

  1245. every good

  1246. work.

  1247. How can this

  1248. be true?

  1249. It's true

  1250. because of where

  1251. this book comes

  1252. from.

  1253. Let's just look

  1254. at our last

  1255. word for today.

  1256. All scripture

  1257. is God

  1258. breathed.

  1259. Now I want to

  1260. dig into this

  1261. word for a

  1262. minute with you.

  1263. in the original

  1264. Greek that this

  1265. was written in,

  1266. this word is

  1267. just one word.

  1268. And it's

  1269. basically the

  1270. word God

  1271. and the

  1272. word breathed

  1273. sandwiched

  1274. together to

  1275. make one

  1276. word, as

  1277. you can see

  1278. on the screen

  1279. there.

  1280. Here's a place

  1281. where I think

  1282. the translation

  1283. of the Bible

  1284. you use is

  1285. significant.

  1286. The New

  1287. International

  1288. Version,

  1289. which is the

  1290. translation on

  1291. screen,

  1292. renders this

  1293. best.

  1294. Some of the

  1295. other translations

  1296. render this as

  1297. inspired by

  1298. God or

  1299. something similar

  1300. to that.

  1301. Some of them

  1302. have a footnote

  1303. which says that

  1304. this is literally

  1305. God breathed

  1306. or breathed

  1307. out by God.

  1308. So this is not

  1309. a disputed

  1310. thing.

  1311. But here's why

  1312. this matters.

  1313. Today,

  1314. in our modern

  1315. English,

  1316. the word

  1317. inspired often

  1318. means just

  1319. to have a

  1320. great idea

  1321. or to

  1322. influence

  1323. something.

  1324. You might

  1325. watch a movie

  1326. that tells the

  1327. true story of

  1328. something that

  1329. happened in

  1330. history.

  1331. But then if

  1332. you're like me,

  1333. you might want

  1334. to look it up

  1335. online and see

  1336. how accurate

  1337. the movie was.

  1338. and you might

  1339. be surprised to

  1340. find out that

  1341. the movie

  1342. actually embellished

  1343. a few things

  1344. and changed

  1345. a few things.

  1346. Or in some

  1347. cases, you

  1348. might find out

  1349. that it was

  1350. inspired by a

  1351. true story,

  1352. but only very,

  1353. very loosely.

  1354. Sometimes the

  1355. movie barely

  1356. resembles the

  1357. true story that

  1358. it was based

  1359. on because it

  1360. was inspired only

  1361. in the sense of

  1362. giving one

  1363. great idea

  1364. or one

  1365. big motivation

  1366. for the film.

  1367. But scripture

  1368. is not

  1369. inspired

  1370. like that.

  1371. God didn't

  1372. loosely

  1373. impress his

  1374. ideas upon

  1375. the biblical

  1376. writers such

  1377. that they wrote

  1378. some things

  1379. that have

  1380. only some

  1381. of his wisdom

  1382. or ideas

  1383. in them.

  1384. In fact,

  1385. in my opinion,

  1386. inspired has

  1387. never been

  1388. the best

  1389. translation of

  1390. this word

  1391. because even

  1392. 400 years ago

  1393. when the King

  1394. James was first

  1395. translated,

  1396. to inspire

  1397. meant to

  1398. breathe in,

  1399. to inhale.

  1400. And you can

  1401. sort of see

  1402. how the word

  1403. came to mean

  1404. what it does

  1405. today.

  1406. If someone

  1407. was under

  1408. the influence

  1409. of something

  1410. in the air,

  1411. they might

  1412. behave differently.

  1413. Some of the

  1414. pagan worship

  1415. over the centuries

  1416. has involved

  1417. smoking or

  1418. breathing in

  1419. of stuff

  1420. that when

  1421. burned

  1422. causes

  1423. hallucinations.

  1424. But this

  1425. word that's

  1426. used here

  1427. in the

  1428. original

  1429. is not

  1430. about

  1431. breathing in.

  1432. It's about

  1433. breathing out.

  1434. That the

  1435. scriptures

  1436. are God

  1437. breathed

  1438. means that

  1439. God breathed

  1440. out the

  1441. words that

  1442. are in the

  1443. scriptures.

  1444. as the

  1445. biblical authors

  1446. put pen

  1447. to paper

  1448. and wrote.

  1449. God was

  1450. breathing out

  1451. the words

  1452. they were

  1453. writing

  1454. such that

  1455. those words

  1456. were ultimately

  1457. coming from

  1458. God's mouth.

  1459. In,

  1460. with,

  1461. and under

  1462. the words

  1463. the biblical

  1464. authors wrote

  1465. was God's

  1466. own spirit,

  1467. God's breath,

  1468. such that

  1469. the words

  1470. they wrote

  1471. on the

  1472. papyrus

  1473. ultimately

  1474. have their

  1475. source

  1476. in the

  1477. mind

  1478. and heart

  1479. of God.

  1480. God's

  1481. love.

  1482. And this

  1483. is the

  1484. key.

  1485. If we're

  1486. wondering how

  1487. an old

  1488. collection of

  1489. writings like

  1490. the Bible

  1491. can be

  1492. useful and

  1493. relevant to

  1494. us today,

  1495. equipping us

  1496. for every

  1497. good work,

  1498. this is

  1499. how.

  1500. This is

  1501. why.

  1502. Because it's

  1503. not just the

  1504. thoughts and

  1505. ideas of

  1506. men from

  1507. 2,000 plus

  1508. years ago.

  1509. These words

  1510. ultimately come

  1511. from God

  1512. himself.

  1513. he breathed

  1514. them out

  1515. as men

  1516. like the

  1517. apostle Paul

  1518. wrote them

  1519. down.

  1520. This is

  1521. why the

  1522. scriptures are

  1523. so valuable.

  1524. This is

  1525. why Paul

  1526. tells Timothy

  1527. to remember

  1528. the scriptures

  1529. and anchor

  1530. yourself in

  1531. the scriptures.

  1532. They are

  1533. the words

  1534. of God

  1535. himself.

  1536. And so

  1537. they have

  1538. everything you

  1539. need

  1540. for life,

  1541. for the

  1542. situation

  1543. you find

  1544. yourself in,

  1545. for every

  1546. good work

  1547. that God

  1548. has given

  1549. you to

  1550. do.

  1551. Once we

  1552. wrap our

  1553. minds around

  1554. this truth,

  1555. that these

  1556. words in

  1557. our Bibles

  1558. come from

  1559. God and

  1560. are his

  1561. words,

  1562. it changes

  1563. everything.

  1564. And this

  1565. is not

  1566. just an

  1567. old book

  1568. anymore.

  1569. This is

  1570. the single

  1571. most important

  1572. book on

  1573. planet Earth.

  1574. God

  1575. is

  1576. God

  1577. to

  1578. God

  1579. to

  1580. God.

  1581. And this

  1582. thing we

  1583. do on

  1584. Sunday

  1585. mornings,

  1586. having a

  1587. sermon from

  1588. the word

  1589. of God,

  1590. is arguably

  1591. the most

  1592. important thing

  1593. we do.

  1594. And this

  1595. is why.

  1596. During this

  1597. time on

  1598. Sundays,

  1599. we open

  1600. up and

  1601. read and

  1602. unpack and

  1603. reflect,

  1604. not just on

  1605. some thoughts

  1606. of a dude

  1607. who lived

  1608. 2,000 years

  1609. ago,

  1610. but on

  1611. the very

  1612. words of

  1613. God

  1614. himself,

  1615. our

  1616. creator.

  1617. And if

  1618. we have

  1619. everything else

  1620. wrong in

  1621. how we do

  1622. church,

  1623. how we are

  1624. living life,

  1625. but we have

  1626. this one thing

  1627. right,

  1628. that we are

  1629. regularly and

  1630. continuously going

  1631. back to the

  1632. words God has

  1633. given us,

  1634. the scriptures,

  1635. then the rest

  1636. will follow in

  1637. time.

  1638. Day by day,

  1639. week by

  1640. week,

  1641. year after

  1642. year,

  1643. God's word

  1644. as we hear

  1645. it and

  1646. believe it

  1647. and obey

  1648. it will

  1649. teach us.

  1650. It will

  1651. correct us

  1652. as a church.

  1653. It will

  1654. give us

  1655. the timely

  1656. rebukes

  1657. that we

  1658. need.

  1659. And it

  1660. will train

  1661. us in

  1662. righteous

  1663. living.

  1664. It will

  1665. equip us

  1666. as a church

  1667. for the

  1668. good works

  1669. that God

  1670. has prepared

  1671. in advance

  1672. for us

  1673. to do

  1674. here in

  1675. this

  1676. community.

  1677. sometimes we

  1678. think of

  1679. God's word

  1680. as being

  1681. a part

  1682. of what

  1683. we do

  1684. at church

  1685. but it's

  1686. so much

  1687. more than

  1688. that.

  1689. God's word

  1690. is what

  1691. forms his

  1692. church.

  1693. It's what

  1694. shapes us

  1695. and molds

  1696. us and

  1697. nurtures

  1698. us and

  1699. grows us

  1700. so that

  1701. we are

  1702. the church

  1703. that God

  1704. desires us

  1705. to be.

  1706. Almost

  1707. 20 years

  1708. ago now

  1709. our church

  1710. went through

  1711. a difficult

  1712. time.

  1713. And it

  1714. was around

  1715. that time

  1716. that our

  1717. church

  1718. changed

  1719. its name.

  1720. I'm not

  1721. going to

  1722. go into

  1723. all the

  1724. details

  1725. of it

  1726. but

  1727. after

  1728. withdrawing

  1729. from a

  1730. particular

  1731. conference

  1732. of churches

  1733. for the

  1734. first time

  1735. in decades

  1736. we had

  1737. no

  1738. affiliation

  1739. with other

  1740. churches

  1741. not with

  1742. the

  1743. associated

  1744. gospel

  1745. churches

  1746. not with

  1747. the

  1748. Baptist

  1749. churches

  1750. and at

  1751. that time

  1752. those who

  1753. remained

  1754. sought the

  1755. Lord

  1756. together

  1757. about

  1758. what to

  1759. change

  1760. our church

  1761. name

  1762. to

  1763. and the

  1764. name

  1765. chosen

  1766. was the

  1767. Davidson

  1768. Community

  1769. Bible

  1770. Church

  1771. who are

  1772. we

  1773. as a

  1774. church

  1775. in this

  1776. community

  1777. of Davidson

  1778. what is

  1779. it that

  1780. most

  1781. defines

  1782. us

  1783. what is

  1784. it that

  1785. determines

  1786. how we

  1787. operate

  1788. and what

  1789. we value

  1790. and how

  1791. we should

  1792. live

  1793. our answer

  1794. as a

  1795. church

  1796. is

  1797. not

  1798. the

  1799. Pope

  1800. not

  1801. some

  1802. archbishop

  1803. or king

  1804. or council

  1805. not

  1806. tradition

  1807. but the

  1808. Bible

  1809. this

  1810. is our

  1811. highest

  1812. authority

  1813. because

  1814. these

  1815. words

  1816. we believe

  1817. are

  1818. God

  1819. breathed

  1820. and useful

  1821. to equip

  1822. us

  1823. and so

  1824. I smile

  1825. every time

  1826. someone refers

  1827. to our

  1828. church

  1829. by its

  1830. nickname

  1831. the

  1832. Bible

  1833. church

  1834. church

  1835. because

  1836. while that

  1837. may sound

  1838. weird

  1839. or pretentious

  1840. that's what

  1841. we want

  1842. to be

  1843. it doesn't

  1844. mean we

  1845. follow the

  1846. Bible

  1847. perfectly

  1848. or know

  1849. it better

  1850. than everyone

  1851. else

  1852. it means

  1853. we value

  1854. it

  1855. supremely

  1856. above all

  1857. other sources

  1858. as the

  1859. word of

  1860. God

  1861. it means

  1862. that we

  1863. are aiming

  1864. to submit

  1865. ourselves

  1866. to his

  1867. authoritative

  1868. words

  1869. in our

  1870. lives

  1871. and so

  1872. may we

  1873. continue

  1874. as a

  1875. church

  1876. to

  1877. treasure

  1878. these

  1879. words

  1880. which

  1881. God

  1882. has

  1883. given

  1884. us

  1885. may we

  1886. continue

  1887. to be

  1888. changed

  1889. by them

  1890. let's

  1891. pray
