  1. All right, well we are working our way as a church through Paul's second letter to Timothy.

  2. We've been doing that for a good part of this year because I took two months off this summer.

  3. So we're still there and we are in chapter three.

  4. And we're going to kind of pause here a little bit and we're going to consider two things.

  5. So this morning's message and next Sunday's message will be a little out of the ordinary.

  6. We're going to kind of widen the focus to the rest of the scriptures to see what they have to say on this thing that we've come to in 2 Timothy 3, verse 16.

    2 Timothy 3:16

  7. This idea, this truth that God has inspired.

  8. He has breathed out the scriptures.

  9. So this is the passage that we came to last Sunday, 2 Timothy 3, verse 16.

    2 Timothy 3:16

  10. Paul writes,

  11. All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness,

  12. so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  13. This is a passage of scripture that is so foundational to our Christian faith.

  14. It explains why we here at the Bible Church take the Bible so seriously.

  15. It is not just the words of men who lived long ago.

  16. It is the very word of God.

  17. As men like Moses and Isaiah and Peter and Paul were putting pen to parchment,

  18. God was breathing out his own words, speaking through them,

  19. so that what ended up on the parchment was God's own words to us, not just their own.

  20. The Apostle Peter said it this way in his letter.

  21. He writes,

  22. We did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,

  23. but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

  24. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the majestic glory saying,

  25. This is my son whom I love.

  26. With him I am well pleased.

  27. We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

  28. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,

  29. and you will do well to pay attention to it as to a light shining in a dark place

  30. until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  31. Peter says,

  32. Peter reminds the followers of Jesus that all of the teaching about Jesus that he's been proclaiming

  33. isn't just some cleverly devised bunch of stories.

  34. Peter says,

  35. I was there on the mountain when Jesus was transfigured before us.

  36. I heard God speak audibly from heaven.

  37. I heard him confirm that yes, this Jesus was and is his son.

  38. And so you can count on what I saw.

  39. You can count on what I heard, says Peter.

  40. It's reliable.

  41. It's trustworthy.

  42. And then he goes on to talk about how we can completely depend

  43. and rely on the word of the prophets that we have in the scriptures.

  44. They too are reliable.

  45. They too are trustworthy.

  46. He's basically saying God really has spoken through human beings.

  47. The words the prophets wrote down, the scriptures,

  48. you must understand, he says,

  49. these words didn't come about because men just decided,

  50. I'm going to sit down and write a book about what I think is going on in my day.

  51. No, the prophetic words, the words of scripture came from God.

  52. And the prophets spoke and wrote as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit of God.

  53. What Paul and Peter are saying here is that God acted supernaturally

  54. over, under, and within the biblical authors

  55. to ensure that his own words were written and communicated

  56. just as he wanted them to be.

  57. God's own spirit, God's own breath are in the words of scripture

  58. that we have in our Bibles.

  59. And this was the whole topic of last Sunday's message.

  60. But now we want to consider a couple other questions related to this this morning.

  61. To what extent is the Bible inspired by God?

  62. To what extent is the Bible inspired by God?

  63. We want to talk about this this morning.

  64. Our church is now a member of the Baptist General Conference of Canada.

  65. And our conference has a good statement about this in our affirmation of faith.

  66. And this is the statement.

  67. We believe that the Bible is the revealed word of God

  68. fully and verbally inspired.

  69. We believe that the Bible is the word of God.

  70. Written under the direction of the Holy Spirit.

  71. We believe it is without error in the original manuscripts

  72. and is true and trustworthy in all that it asserts.

  73. It has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.

  74. Notice the wording here.

  75. We believe that the Bible is the word of God

  76. and that it is fully inspired.

  77. In other words, we believe that all of the Bible is God-breathed,

  78. divinely inspired, coming from God himself as his own word.

  79. And a lot of why we believe that comes from 2 Timothy 3.16,

  80. which we just saw on the screen and which we looked at last Sunday.

  81. It says all scripture is God-breathed.

  82. And so from Genesis all the way to Revelation and everything in between,

  83. all of it is inspired by God.

  84. All of it comes from God.

  85. It was breathed out by him as the human authors wrote on the parchment.

  86. It's fully inspired, we believe.

  87. Not only that, but we believe that it is verbally inspired.

  88. Verbally inspired.

  89. That is, that every word of the Bible is God-breathed,

  90. comes from God under the direction of his Holy Spirit

  91. as the human author wrote it down.

  92. And I want to explore this a little bit more together this morning.

  93. Why do we believe that every word of this book comes from God?

  94. Let's look together at a few passages.

  95. The first one comes from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

  96. As he was teaching his disciples and later the crowd that gathered.

  97. This is what he said.

  98. He said,

  99. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  100. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  101. For truly, I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear,

  102. not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen,

  103. will by any means disappear from the law until everything is accomplished.

  104. Therefore, anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands

  105. and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

  106. But whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

  107. So there was some suspicion in Jesus' day that he had come to cast doubt

  108. on the word of God, the trustworthy word of Moses and the prophets

  109. that had been handed down to Israel.

  110. But Jesus says,

  111. Don't even think.

  112. Don't even think that I have come to do away with the law or the prophets,

  113. to abolish them.

  114. If you look at the law,

  115. that's actually the short name for the law of Moses.

  116. Referring to the first five books of the Bible that Moses wrote down,

  117. Genesis to Deuteronomy.

  118. And the prophets,

  119. this is also kind of a shorthand way of referring to the rest of the Old Testament.

  120. We tend to think of the prophets as only referring to men like Elijah and Isaiah and Ezekiel.

  121. But the biblical notion of a prophet is much broader.

  122. It would have included men like King David,

  123. who wrote the Psalms,

  124. and Solomon,

  125. who wrote Proverbs.

  126. It would have included anyone who truly spoke or wrote on God's behalf.

  127. To the people.

  128. And so when Jesus says,

  129. The law and the prophets,

  130. it's actually a reference to all of the scriptures that they had.

  131. The scriptures of the Old Testament.

  132. He says,

  133. I've not come to abolish the law or the prophets,

  134. all the scriptures that you have now.

  135. I've come to fulfill them.

  136. He makes it clear that those writings are not something he came to do away with or replace.

  137. God doesn't intend to replace the Old Testament with Jesus.

  138. He intends to fulfill what was written in those scriptures through Jesus.

  139. But now let's look at the way Jesus speaks about the Old Testament scriptures here in verse 18.

  140. The law of Moses,

  141. the writings of the prophets.

  142. Truly I tell you,

  143. until heaven and earth disappear,

  144. not the smallest letter,

  145. not the least stroke of a pen will by any means disappear from the law

  146. until everything is accomplished.

  147. In other words,

  148. according to Jesus,

  149. every letter of every word

  150. matters.

  151. God intends to fulfill

  152. all of what he has spoken.

  153. Not just kind of,

  154. not just essentially,

  155. but down to the smallest stroke of the pen.

  156. In other words,

  157. not a single word of the revelation that God gave through Moses or the prophets

  158. is unimportant

  159. or irrelevant.

  160. We believe that the scriptures are verbally inspired,

  161. word for word.

  162. Every word from God.

  163. Let's look at another passage where we see this.

  164. Jesus on another occasion had a run-in with the religious,

  165. some of the religious leaders known as the Sadducees.

  166. And the Sadducees,

  167. who say there is no resurrection,

  168. came to Jesus with a question.

  169. So they denied the afterlife, essentially.

  170. They didn't believe in many spiritual things.

  171. And Jesus has a conversation with them.

  172. They come to Jesus and they say,

  173. Moses told us that if a man dies

  174. without having children,

  175. then that man's brother must marry the widow

  176. and raise up offspring

  177. for his brother.

  178. Now there were seven brothers among us

  179. and the first one married

  180. and died.

  181. And since he had no children,

  182. he left his wife

  183. to his brother.

  184. The same thing happened to the second.

  185. They married the widow,

  186. had no children,

  187. died,

  188. and the third brother

  189. right on down to the seventh.

  190. Finally, the woman died.

  191. Now then,

  192. at the resurrection,

  193. whose wife

  194. will she be

  195. of the seventh

  196. since all of them were married to her?

  197. This was kind of a hypothetical scenario

  198. used to challenge Jesus' belief

  199. in the resurrection.

  200. And Jesus looks at him and says,

  201. you are in error

  202. because you do not know

  203. the scriptures

  204. or the power of God.

  205. At the resurrection,

  206. people will neither marry

  207. nor be given in marriage.

  208. they will be like

  209. the angels in heaven.

  210. But about the resurrection

  211. of the dead,

  212. have you not read

  213. what God said to you?

  214. I am the God of Abraham,

  215. the God of Isaac,

  216. and the God of Jacob.

  217. Jesus is quoting

  218. from the book of Exodus,

    Exodus 3:6

  219. chapter 3, verse 6.

  220. God is not the God of the dead,

  221. but of the living.

  222. When the crowds heard this,

  223. they were astonished

  224. at his teaching.

  225. So here Jesus uses

  226. the scriptures

  227. from the book of Exodus

  228. to correct the Sadducees,

  229. and he quotes it

  230. word for word.

  231. This is what God said.

  232. And amazingly,

  233. he makes his whole point here

  234. on the tense

  235. of the verb.

  236. I am the God

  237. of Abraham,

  238. the God of Isaac,

  239. the God of Jacob.

  240. As in presently,

  241. right now,

  242. I am still

  243. the God of Abraham.

  244. At this point in Exodus,

  245. Abraham had died

  246. long before this.

  247. He's not the God

  248. of the dead,

  249. but of the living.

  250. Is Jesus just nitpicking?

  251. Is he being argumentative?

  252. Far from it.

  253. Jesus understood

  254. that God was deliberate

  255. in his choice

  256. of every word

  257. that he spoke long ago.

  258. Even to the tense

  259. of the verb,

  260. it was significant.

  261. It was accurate.

  262. What was written

  263. in the scriptures.

  264. And so we believe

  265. in the verbal inspiration.

  266. We believe that

  267. every word

  268. is God-breathed.

  269. One more quick example

  270. from the letter

  271. that Paul wrote

  272. to the Galatians.

  273. Galatians 3,

    Galatians 3:16

  274. verse 16.

  275. Paul is writing here

  276. and he says,

  277. the promises

  278. were spoken to Abraham

  279. and to his seed.

  280. Scripture does not say

  281. and to seeds,

  282. meaning many people,

  283. but and to your seed,

  284. meaning one person

  285. who is Christ.

  286. Now I know we're kind of

  287. jumping into the middle

  288. of something here.

  289. Paul's making

  290. some big points here.

  291. He's laboring to show

  292. that the promises

  293. which God made

  294. to Abraham

  295. and his seed,

  296. his offspring.

  297. He's laboring to show

  298. that those promises

  299. are fulfilled

  300. in one person.

  301. And that person

  302. is Jesus Christ.

  303. And so here Paul,

  304. under the direction

  305. of the Holy Spirit

  306. as an apostle

  307. of Jesus Christ,

  308. makes his case

  309. on the singularity

  310. of the word seed

  311. as opposed to

  312. the plural,

  313. seeds.

  314. think of this.

  315. This was a word

  316. penned in the scriptures

  317. by Moses

  318. recording what happened

  319. with Abraham

  320. thousands of years

  321. prior to this.

  322. And Paul's saying,

  323. yes,

  324. whether the word

  325. was plural or not

  326. mattered to God.

  327. When he made that promise,

  328. God had a particular

  329. fulfillment in mind

  330. the day he said this

  331. to Abraham.

  332. And that fulfillment

  333. would be Christ.

  334. And so his word,

  335. the scriptures,

  336. said,

  337. say,

  338. seed,

  339. and not seeds.

  340. So as we look

  341. at how Jesus

  342. and the apostles

  343. handled the Old Testament

  344. scriptures,

  345. it becomes pretty obvious

  346. that they understood

  347. the scriptures

  348. to be verbally

  349. inspired by God.

  350. every word.

  351. They understood them

  352. to be God-breathed

  353. and accurate

  354. down to the tense,

  355. down to whether

  356. the word was plural

  357. or not,

  358. and every word

  359. authoritative

  360. and important.

  361. And so that's

  362. what we believe.

  363. Not just that the

  364. general gist of ideas

  365. that God had

  366. in his mind

  367. are essentially

  368. intact

  369. in our Bibles,

  370. but that every word

  371. comes from God

  372. under the direction

  373. of his spirit.

  374. And so this

  375. has big implications

  376. for how we view

  377. this book,

  378. the Bible.

  379. It necessarily

  380. follows that

  381. if every word

  382. in this book

  383. is supernaturally

  384. selected

  385. by God

  386. and spoken

  387. by God,

  388. then it necessarily

  389. follows that

  390. this book

  391. is without

  392. error.

  393. it also

  394. follows that

  395. it's true

  396. in all that

  397. it asserts

  398. and trustworthy.

  399. And it also

  400. follows that

  401. it has supreme

  402. authority

  403. in everything

  404. that we believe

  405. and in everything

  406. that we do

  407. for all of life.

  408. But here's one

  409. caveat that we

  410. have to notice

  411. here,

  412. especially when

  413. it comes to

  414. looking at the

  415. inerrancy of

  416. Scripture.

  417. we believe

  418. it is without

  419. error in

  420. the original

  421. manuscripts.

  422. So we do

  423. not believe

  424. that every copy

  425. that has ever

  426. been made

  427. over the

  428. centuries

  429. has no mistakes

  430. or words

  431. accidentally

  432. left out

  433. or accidentally

  434. added in

  435. over the

  436. centuries.

  437. We believe

  438. that the

  439. original scroll

  440. which Moses

  441. wrote under

  442. the influence

  443. of God's

  444. Spirit is

  445. 100%

  446. without error.

  447. We believe

  448. that the

  449. original letter

  450. that was penned

  451. by the

  452. Apostle Paul

  453. on the

  454. parchment

  455. was 100%

  456. without error.

  457. That every

  458. word that he

  459. wrote was

  460. God-breathed

  461. and was

  462. exactly as

  463. God wanted

  464. it to be.

  465. And this is

  466. a place

  467. where the

  468. devil has

  469. worked to

  470. cause all

  471. kinds of

  472. trouble

  473. amongst

  474. Christians.

  475. his goal

  476. has always

  477. been to

  478. get us

  479. not to

  480. trust the

  481. word of

  482. God.

  483. Did God

  484. really say

  485. were the

  486. words of

  487. the serpent

  488. in the

  489. garden that

  490. fateful day?

  491. And so for

  492. centuries the

  493. devil has

  494. been trying

  495. to cause

  496. people to

  497. doubt whether

  498. God has

  499. really spoken

  500. to us,

  501. whether we

  502. can really

  503. be sure that

  504. we have

  505. his words

  506. intact in

  507. our

  508. scriptures.

  509. One of the

  510. questions he

  511. loves to

  512. poke us

  513. with is

  514. isn't it

  515. possible that

  516. so many

  517. human errors

  518. and mistakes

  519. have crept

  520. into the

  521. Bible over

  522. the centuries

  523. that now

  524. it hardly

  525. resembles the

  526. original

  527. manuscripts?

  528. Isn't it

  529. likely that

  530. the truth

  531. of the

  532. Bible has

  533. been lost

  534. in

  535. translation

  536. over the

  537. centuries?

  538. And so

  539. we're going

  540. to take

  541. next Sunday

  542. Lord willing

  543. just to

  544. talk about

  545. this issue

  546. of transmission

  547. and translation

  548. from the

  549. originals

  550. to today

  551. because there's

  552. a lot to

  553. talk about

  554. there's a lot

  555. to look at

  556. and we do

  557. not want to

  558. give the

  559. devil an

  560. opportunity

  561. or a

  562. foothold

  563. in our

  564. church.

  565. yes we

  566. believe that

  567. every word

  568. penned by

  569. the biblical

  570. authors is

  571. breathed out

  572. by God

  573. is without

  574. error

  575. true in

  576. all that it

  577. asserts

  578. and trustworthy

  579. in the

  580. original

  581. manuscripts

  582. and I'll

  583. give you a

  584. spoiler for

  585. next Sunday

  586. we can be

  587. absolutely

  588. confident

  589. that the

  590. best English

  591. translations

  592. that we

  593. hold in

  594. our hands

  595. today are

  596. very accurate

  597. and that

  598. the overwhelming

  599. majority of

  600. variances between

  601. the manuscript

  602. copies that we

  603. have do not

  604. affect any

  605. major Christian

  606. doctrine

  607. whatsoever.

  608. More about

  609. that next

  610. Sunday.

  611. For the rest

  612. of our time

  613. here I want

  614. to look at

  615. some examples

  616. of how different

  617. genres in the

  618. Bible are

  619. inspired by

  620. God.

  621. How they are

  622. God breathed

  623. and we're going

  624. to start right

  625. at the end

  626. and kind of

  627. work our way

  628. backwards a bit.

  629. Let's go to

  630. Revelation.

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  631. chapter 1.

  632. How did

  633. Revelation come

  634. to be in

  635. our Bibles?

  636. This is what

  637. John wrote

  638. right at the

  639. beginning.

  640. He said

  641. the revelation

  642. from Jesus

  643. Christ

  644. which God

  645. gave him

  646. to show

  647. his servants

  648. what must

  649. soon take

  650. place.

  651. He made

  652. it known

  653. by sending

  654. his angel

  655. to his

  656. servant

  657. John

  658. who testifies

  659. to everything

  660. he saw.

  661. That is

  662. the word

  663. of God

  664. and the

  665. testimony

  666. of Jesus

  667. Christ.

  668. Blessed

  669. is the

  670. one who

  671. reads aloud

  672. the words

  673. of this

  674. prophecy

  675. and blessed

  676. are those

  677. who hear

  678. it and

  679. take to

  680. heart what

  681. is written

  682. in it

  683. because the

  684. time is

  685. near.

  686. God

  687. So the

  688. apostle John

  689. identifies

  690. himself as

  691. the recipient

  692. of this

  693. revelation.

  694. He says

  695. that it

  696. came from

  697. Jesus

  698. Christ

  699. himself

  700. through

  701. an angel

  702. and John

  703. as he

  704. writes this

  705. now he

  706. says I'm

  707. testifying to

  708. what I saw

  709. everything

  710. he saw

  711. and then the

  712. rest of

  713. revelation is

  714. his vision

  715. which Jesus

  716. gave him

  717. through this

  718. angel and

  719. if you've read

  720. the book of

  721. revelation you

  722. know it's

  723. quite the

  724. vision.

  725. But we

  726. notice also in

  727. revelation there

  728. are numerous

  729. times where

  730. Jesus tells

  731. John

  732. write and

  733. then tells

  734. him exactly

  735. what to

  736. write.

  737. In other

  738. places he's

  739. told to

  740. write what he

  741. sees or to

  742. write what he

  743. hears.

  744. And so

  745. there's two

  746. ways here that

  747. we see God

  748. causing his

  749. word to be

  750. written down.

  751. Sometimes he

  752. dictates it

  753. word for word

  754. and he told

  755. his chosen

  756. man write

  757. this and

  758. then told

  759. him what to

  760. write.

  761. We see this

  762. all over the

  763. prophets in the

  764. Old Testament

  765. too.

  766. Say to

  767. so and so

  768. and then God

  769. tells him word

  770. for word what

  771. to say.

  772. The other way

  773. that we see

  774. inspiration happening

  775. here is just

  776. the vision itself

  777. that John

  778. sees that God

  779. gives him.

  780. He's told to

  781. write it down

  782. and that this

  783. is inspired by

  784. God means that

  785. John is

  786. accurately describing

  787. exactly what

  788. he really saw

  789. as Jesus gave

  790. this vision

  791. through this

  792. angel.

  793. Sometimes in

  794. this book John

  795. gives some

  796. explanation about

  797. the meaning of

  798. certain things in

  799. the vision.

  800. That this is

  801. inspired by

  802. God means

  803. that his

  804. explanation is

  805. true.

  806. The spirit

  807. was influencing

  808. him as he

  809. was writing

  810. this so that

  811. he understood

  812. what he was

  813. writing about.

  814. That's

  815. revelation.

  816. Let's consider

  817. one of the

  818. letters of

  819. Paul.

  820. What does it

  821. mean for this

  822. genre to be

  823. inspired by

  824. God?

  825. Paul was an

  826. apostle,

  827. sort of the

  828. New Testament

  829. equivalent of

  830. a prophet,

  831. specifically

  832. though, a

  833. spokesperson of

  834. Jesus Christ.

  835. Jesus said on

  836. the night of

  837. his betrayal

  838. that his

  839. spirit would

  840. give his

  841. apostles the

  842. words to

  843. say.

  844. And then he

  845. enabled the

  846. apostles to

  847. perform signs

  848. and wonders

  849. just like Jesus

  850. did to

  851. authenticate

  852. those men

  853. as his

  854. messengers.

  855. And Paul was

  856. one of those

  857. men.

  858. Paul wrote

  859. letters to

  860. the churches

  861. that he

  862. helped to

  863. establish all

  864. around the

  865. Mediterranean

  866. world.

  867. And his

  868. letters are

  869. full of

  870. teaching and

  871. instruction for

  872. followers of

  873. Jesus.

  874. But we also

  875. notice that

  876. his letters are

  877. not devoid of

  878. his own

  879. personality.

  880. Paul had a

  881. fun tendency to

  882. take some

  883. things to the

  884. extreme, to

  885. make a point.

  886. And it just

  887. shows up in

  888. his letters and

  889. we kind of have

  890. to laugh when we

  891. get to those

  892. points.

  893. If you're new

  894. here, you're

  895. probably thinking

  896. that that verse

  897. right there is

  898. really strange.

  899. But if you

  900. read all of

  901. Galatians in

  902. context, you'll

  903. understand what

  904. he's saying

  905. there.

  906. The Holy

  907. Spirit did not

  908. bypass Paul's

  909. personality

  910. altogether as

  911. Paul wrote the

  912. scriptures that

  913. he wrote.

  914. His personality

  915. shines through at

  916. the same time.

  917. We see the

  918. authenticity of

  919. Paul's love for

  920. the people in

  921. the churches.

  922. We see how

  923. he really cared

  924. for people, how

  925. he related to

  926. people.

  927. We see his

  928. frustration over

  929. the division, his

  930. personal frustration

  931. over the division

  932. and the damage

  933. caused in the

  934. church by false

  935. teachers.

  936. And so as God

  937. breathed the

  938. scriptures that

  939. Paul wrote, he

  940. did so in a way

  941. that kept the

  942. humanity of Paul

  943. and his

  944. relationships fully

  945. intact.

  946. I love this

  947. reference to

  948. Paul's letters

  949. that Peter makes

  950. in his letter.

  951. Peter writes

  952. this in 2 Peter

    2 Peter 3:15

  953. chapter 3

  954. verse 15.

  955. He says,

  956. bear in mind

  957. that our Lord's

  958. patience means

  959. salvation just

  960. as our dear

  961. brother Paul also

  962. wrote you with

  963. the wisdom that

  964. God gave him.

  965. Paul writes the

  966. same way in all

  967. his letters,

  968. says Peter,

  969. speaking in them

  970. of these matters,

  971. his letters

  972. contain some

  973. things that are

  974. hard to understand

  975. which ignorant

  976. and unstable

  977. people distort

  978. as they do

  979. the other

  980. scriptures to

  981. their own

  982. destruction.

  983. Notice how

  984. the apostle Peter

  985. spoke of Paul's

  986. writings as

  987. coming from

  988. God's wisdom

  989. and how he

  990. lumps Paul's

  991. letters right

  992. in with the

  993. other scriptures.

  994. letters.

  995. Peter recognized

  996. the letters of

  997. Paul as God

  998. breathed scripture

  999. on the same

  1000. level as the

  1001. other divinely

  1002. inspired writings

  1003. that they had

  1004. in the Old

  1005. Testament.

  1006. Next, let's look

  1007. at the gospel

  1008. of Luke.

  1009. Luke admits

  1010. right at the

  1011. beginning that

  1012. he was not

  1013. one of the

  1014. first eyewitnesses

  1015. of all that

  1016. happened with

  1017. Jesus but

  1018. that later on

  1019. once he heard

  1020. about it,

  1021. he made an

  1022. effort to

  1023. carefully

  1024. investigate

  1025. everything

  1026. about Jesus

  1027. right back

  1028. to the

  1029. beginning.

  1030. And then

  1031. Luke took

  1032. everything that

  1033. he had

  1034. gathered from

  1035. these eyewitnesses

  1036. and compiled

  1037. this account

  1038. of Jesus'

  1039. story,

  1040. of Jesus'

  1041. life and

  1042. death and

  1043. resurrection.

  1044. And he did

  1045. this for a

  1046. man named

  1047. Theophilus.

  1048. That's who he

  1049. was writing

  1050. at this for.

  1051. And so that

  1052. Luke's gospel

  1053. account is

  1054. God breathed

  1055. means that

  1056. as he did

  1057. this work

  1058. God's

  1059. spirit was

  1060. directing him

  1061. to the

  1062. right people

  1063. to have

  1064. the needed

  1065. conversations,

  1066. to ascertain

  1067. the precise

  1068. words and

  1069. details of the

  1070. events of

  1071. Jesus'

  1072. life.

  1073. And then

  1074. ultimately that

  1075. Luke's gospel

  1076. account is

  1077. God breathed

  1078. means that as

  1079. he sat down

  1080. to write it

  1081. out,

  1082. the spirit

  1083. of God

  1084. supernaturally

  1085. influenced him

  1086. such that the

  1087. final product

  1088. was 100%

  1089. true and

  1090. accurate to

  1091. every detail

  1092. of what Jesus

  1093. said and

  1094. did and what

  1095. happened during

  1096. his life.

  1097. What about the

  1098. Psalms in the

  1099. Old Testament?

  1100. If there's any

  1101. part of

  1102. scripture that

  1103. we may wonder

  1104. about how can

  1105. that be the

  1106. word of God,

  1107. it could be the

  1108. Psalms.

  1109. Many of them

  1110. are prayers that

  1111. are written by

  1112. men to God.

  1113. And so we

  1114. might wonder

  1115. about that.

  1116. Let's look at

  1117. how Jesus quotes

  1118. the words of

  1119. David from

  1120. Psalm 110.

  1121. Jesus is

  1122. having another

  1123. encounter with

  1124. the religious

  1125. leaders.

  1126. He's teaching

  1127. in the temple

  1128. courts and he

  1129. asks this

  1130. question,

  1131. why do the

  1132. teachers of the

  1133. law say that

  1134. the Messiah is

  1135. the son of

  1136. David?

  1137. David himself

  1138. speaking by the

  1139. Holy Spirit

  1140. declared,

  1141. the Lord said

  1142. to my Lord

  1143. and then he

  1144. quotes Psalm

  1145. 110 right

  1146. there.

  1147. Now Jesus

  1148. is making a

  1149. big point here

  1150. to the religious

  1151. leaders.

  1152. We're not going

  1153. to get into

  1154. that but notice

  1155. what Jesus says

  1156. about David's

  1157. Psalm which

  1158. was written a

  1159. thousand years

  1160. before this.

  1161. David himself

  1162. speaking by the

  1163. Holy Spirit

  1164. said and

  1165. then he

  1166. quotes.

  1167. So when David

  1168. wrote this

  1169. Psalm it

  1170. wasn't just

  1171. some uninspired

  1172. his own

  1173. thoughts.

  1174. No, the

  1175. Psalms are

  1176. God breathed

  1177. too.

  1178. And there are

  1179. lots of

  1180. examples of

  1181. this attributing

  1182. the words of

  1183. the Psalms in

  1184. different places

  1185. to the Holy

  1186. Spirit.

  1187. Which means

  1188. that we have

  1189. a God

  1190. breathed

  1191. collection of

  1192. prayers,

  1193. poetry,

  1194. wisdom,

  1195. songs.

  1196. That the

  1197. Psalms are

  1198. God breathed

  1199. means that

  1200. when the

  1201. writer of

  1202. the Psalms

  1203. intends to

  1204. teach us

  1205. something about

  1206. God or

  1207. asserts

  1208. something about

  1209. him in

  1210. praise,

  1211. that they're

  1212. inspired by

  1213. God,

  1214. breathed out

  1215. by him,

  1216. means that

  1217. this is

  1218. true.

  1219. God is

  1220. really like

  1221. that.

  1222. He's really

  1223. worthy of

  1224. praise for

  1225. that reason.

  1226. But it

  1227. also means

  1228. that where

  1229. the Psalmists

  1230. lament and

  1231. groan and

  1232. cry out to

  1233. God and

  1234. wonder if

  1235. God's

  1236. forgotten

  1237. them,

  1238. that these

  1239. words are

  1240. God breathed

  1241. means that

  1242. their words

  1243. genuinely

  1244. describe the

  1245. kind of

  1246. anguish or

  1247. anxiety they

  1248. felt, even

  1249. the kinds of

  1250. doubts.

  1251. that they

  1252. wrestled

  1253. with.

  1254. We might

  1255. look at

  1256. verses like

  1257. this and

  1258. say, how

  1259. can that

  1260. be the

  1261. word of

  1262. God?

  1263. It tells

  1264. us in

  1265. other places

  1266. that God

  1267. is always

  1268. with his

  1269. people, that

  1270. he never

  1271. abandons his

  1272. people, that

  1273. he always

  1274. keeps his

  1275. promises.

  1276. These words

  1277. being inspired

  1278. by God, it

  1279. doesn't mean

  1280. that God

  1281. actually abandons

  1282. his people or

  1283. that he fails

  1284. to keep his

  1285. promises.

  1286. of course

  1287. not.

  1288. Rather, God

  1289. breathed leaves

  1290. room, even

  1291. for the people

  1292. who wrote the

  1293. Bible to

  1294. speak truthfully

  1295. about how

  1296. they felt in

  1297. the moment,

  1298. even if their

  1299. thoughts were

  1300. feelings where

  1301. they were just

  1302. lacking faith,

  1303. or they were

  1304. afraid, or

  1305. they doubted.

  1306. had a

  1307. conversation

  1308. with, where

  1309. is he, Rob,

  1310. last Sunday, and

  1311. he brought this

  1312. passage to my

  1313. attention.

  1314. Word for

  1315. word inspired

  1316. by God does

  1317. not mean that

  1318. every single

  1319. utterance by

  1320. every single

  1321. person in the

  1322. Bible is

  1323. true.

  1324. For example,

  1325. when the devil

  1326. speaks, is that

  1327. true?

  1328. Or when the

  1329. wicked rulers of

  1330. the nations

  1331. around Israel

  1332. blaspheme God,

  1333. those words are

  1334. not true.

  1335. Or when Job's

  1336. friends, as Rob

  1337. pointed out,

  1338. speak wrongly

  1339. about God,

  1340. later on in

  1341. the book, God

  1342. himself says,

  1343. they did not

  1344. speak the truth

  1345. about me.

  1346. We have whole

  1347. chapters of

  1348. these characters

  1349. not speaking the

  1350. truth about God

  1351. in the Bible.

  1352. God breathed

  1353. means that,

  1354. not that what

  1355. they said in

  1356. those moments

  1357. was good or

  1358. true, it

  1359. just means that

  1360. the biblical

  1361. author accurately

  1362. recorded exactly

  1363. what they said.

  1364. God breathed

  1365. means that we

  1366. have a trustworthy

  1367. account of what

  1368. Job's friends

  1369. said and what

  1370. Satan said and

  1371. what the rulers

  1372. of the nations

  1373. said when they

  1374. taunted at

  1375. different times.

  1376. God's friends.

  1377. God's friends

  1378. said and what

  1379. God's friends

  1380. said.

  1381. On the flip

  1382. side, let's

  1383. consider that the

  1384. divine inspiration

  1385. of the scriptures

  1386. is the only

  1387. explanation for

  1388. how many of the

  1389. declarations of the

  1390. prophets made

  1391. about the future

  1392. could be fulfilled

  1393. so exactly.

  1394. Some of the

  1395. predictions made

  1396. by the prophets

  1397. had a specific

  1398. day or year

  1399. attached to them

  1400. and God

  1401. fulfilled them

  1402. in the time

  1403. that he specified

  1404. to the year,

  1405. to the day.

  1406. This is one

  1407. example on the

  1408. screen.

  1409. That can only

  1410. happen as

  1411. consistently and

  1412. plentifully as it

  1413. did in the Bible

  1414. if the words the

  1415. prophets penned were

  1416. inspired by God

  1417. word for word.

  1418. In fact, God even

  1419. told the Israelites

  1420. to discern whether a

  1421. prophet was truly

  1422. speaking on his

  1423. behalf based on

  1424. whether or not the

  1425. thing that they

  1426. were predicting in

  1427. the near future

  1428. came true.

  1429. So I hope that

  1430. this has been an

  1431. encouragement to

  1432. you.

  1433. Not just from

  1434. Paul in his

  1435. letter to Timothy

  1436. but from all over

  1437. the Bible, from

  1438. Peter, from

  1439. Jesus, from the

  1440. fulfillment of

  1441. prophecy.

  1442. All scripture is

  1443. God-breathed and

  1444. is useful for

  1445. teaching, rebuking,

  1446. correcting, and

  1447. training in

  1448. righteousness so

  1449. that the servant

  1450. of God may be

  1451. thoroughly equipped

  1452. for every good

  1453. work.

  1454. The scriptures are

  1455. God-breathed down

  1456. to the word, even

  1457. the tense, even

  1458. the plurality of

  1459. the words.

  1460. And because the

  1461. scriptures are

  1462. God-breathed means

  1463. that they are

  1464. trustworthy.

  1465. It means that we

  1466. can build our lives

  1467. on these words.

  1468. And when we

  1469. start to read our

  1470. Bibles in this

  1471. way, it changes

  1472. everything.

  1473. The disorientation

  1474. that we find from

  1475. all the voices in

  1476. our world speaking

  1477. at us, that

  1478. disorientation just

  1479. begins to lift.

  1480. We begin to see

  1481. clearly what's going

  1482. on in our world,

  1483. where we stand,

  1484. with God, what he

  1485. desires for us,

  1486. how he truly does

  1487. love us with a

  1488. love beyond measure.

  1489. I want to close

  1490. with the words of

  1491. Jesus himself from

  1492. Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  1493. Sermon on the

  1494. Mount.

  1495. Jesus said this,

  1496. he said,

  1497. therefore everyone

  1498. who hears these

  1499. words of mine and

  1500. puts them into

  1501. practice is like a

  1502. wise man who built

  1503. his house on the

  1504. rock.

  1505. the rain came

  1506. down, the streams

  1507. rose, and the

  1508. winds blew and beat

  1509. against that house,

  1510. yet it did not

  1511. fall, because it

  1512. had its foundation

  1513. on the rock.

  1514. But everyone who

  1515. hears these words of

  1516. mine and does not

  1517. put them into

  1518. practice is like a

  1519. foolish man who

  1520. built his house on

  1521. sand.

  1522. The rain came down,

  1523. the streams rose,

  1524. the winds blew and

  1525. beat against that

  1526. house, and it fell

  1527. with a great crash.

  1528. Let's pray.

  1529. Father in heaven, we

  1530. want to say thank

  1531. you for your word.

  1532. The amazing thing

  1533. that you've done in

  1534. preserving exactly

  1535. what you said all

  1536. those thousands of

  1537. years ago for us,

1538. so that today we can

1539. look in our Bibles and

1540. we can read and we

  1541. can have confidence

  1542. confidence that you

  1543. spoke this, and we

  1544. can know how we

  1545. need to respond and

  1546. what we need to

  1547. believe and how we

  1548. need to think and

1549. how we need to live.

  1550. Thank you for this

  1551. incredible gift.

  1552. I pray that our

  1553. hearts would be good

  1554. soil, that we would

  1555. all respond whole

  1556. heartedly to your

  1557. word in whatever

  1558. ways we encounter it,

  1559. whether it's at home

  1560. reading our Bibles,

  1561. whether it's on

  1562. Sunday mornings,

  1563. whether it's listening

1564. as we drive on the

  1565. road.

1566. Do your work in us.

  1567. Cause us to bear

  1568. much fruit for your

  1569. name and for your

  1570. glory.

  1571. Amen.
