  1. All right, well next Sunday we are going to be starting a new series working through the Gospel of Luke.

  2. But before we get to that, I wanted to take a moment this Sunday to look back into the Old Testament Scriptures.

  3. What did God say before Jesus came about the Messiah?

  4. What were some of the expectations that people might have had about the Messiah in Jesus' day

  5. if they were carefully listening to the Scriptures of the Old Testament?

  6. The Old Testament Scriptures point to Jesus in countless ways.

  7. But for this morning, we're just going to be doing a little sampling of some of them,

  8. some of those passages, specifically the ones that talk about the coming of the Messiah.

  9. We start here.

  10. What does the title Messiah even mean?

  11. The word Messiah comes from the Hebrew, Mashiach, and that word means anointed one.

  12. To anoint someone was to pour oil over their head.

  13. And doing that signified that they were being set apart from other people for a special role.

  14. At God's command, Moses anointed his brother Aaron and Aaron's sons to serve as God's priests at the tabernacle

  15. just after God led Israel out of Egypt.

  16. Pouring a special oil onto their heads was a visible and tangible symbol

  17. that God himself had chosen these men to serve in a particular unique way.

  18. But anointing was also practiced in ancient times at the installation of a king.

  19. There's a reference to an anointing ceremony in the period of the judges

  20. after Israel had come to rest in the land of Canaan.

  21. And this particular reference from Judges chapter 9 was not a good anointing.

    Judges 9 chapter mention

  22. There were some men in Israel and they anointed a man named Abimelech and they crowned him as their king.

  23. But Abimelech was a treacherous and murderous man.

  24. And God actively opposed him.

  25. This man governed Israel for about three years.

  26. And then he was killed.

  27. This was a case of some of the Israelites choosing a man for themselves.

  28. But he was definitely not God's choice for his people.

  29. Though this is the first time in the Bible that we see this act of anointing,

  30. pouring out oil in connection with the selection of a king.

  31. Well, sometime after this in Israel's history came the prophet Samuel.

  32. This is about 1000 BC.

  33. And God chose Samuel to speak on his behalf to the people of Israel from the time Samuel was a boy.

  34. Maybe you know the story.

  35. You can read about it in the books of 1 and 2 Samuel.

  36. And there are several references in those books to the anointed one of God.

  37. And none of these references have to do with the priests.

  38. They all have to do with a king.

  39. In fact, by the time we come to 1 Samuel, we see that the men serving as priests in Israel are corrupt.

  40. They're doing all kinds of wicked things.

  41. And the eyes of the people in Israel have wandered away from God and away from his tabernacle.

  42. And they're looking instead at the gods of the nations around them.

  43. Nations, and they have rulers, and they have kings.

  44. God hints at what is soon to take place in those days through the prophetic prayer of Samuel's mom.

  45. Just after the birth of Samuel.

  46. We can read her prayer in 1 Samuel 2, verse 8.

    1 Samuel 2:8

  47. She's praying to the Lord and she says this.

  48. He, that's God, raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap.

  49. He seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor.

  50. So who receives a throne of honor?

  51. The poor man that God raises up from the dust.

  52. She continues on.

  53. He will guard the feet of his faithful servants.

  54. But the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.

  55. It is not by strength that one prevails.

  56. Those who oppose the Lord will be broken.

  57. The Most High will thunder from heaven.

  58. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.

  59. She concludes her prayer with these words.

  60. He, that is, the Lord Most High, will give strength to his king.

  61. And he will exalt the horn of his anointed.

  62. The people of Israel, up until this point in the story, have been under the attack.

  63. They've been under the dominion of various kings of the surrounding nations for the past 400 years or so,

  64. since the death of Joshua.

  65. And by God's grace, he raised up champions for them.

  66. Men who led and judged the people of Israel and even some women.

  67. And some of these guys were regional.

  68. All of them were temporary and short-lived.

  69. Abimelech might have been anointed and named king by those scoundrels who ran with him.

  70. But he wasn't much of a king.

  71. More and more, the people in those days wanted to have a great and powerful king of their own.

  72. Like they saw the other nations around them having.

  73. They wanted to be like the nations around them.

  74. Yet even as Samuel is born, Hannah, his mom, prays prophetically at the tabernacle.

  75. She says,

  76. For anyone with ears to hear, God was speaking through Hannah that day.

  77. He was promising that there was coming a king of God's choosing.

  78. A king whom God would anoint.

  79. For his people.

  80. Well, just a little later on in the story, after Samuel has grown up a bit,

  81. God sends this man without a name, at least not in the scriptures,

  82. to Eli, the priest at the tabernacle.

  83. And these are his words to Eli.

  84. He says to Eli, this is God speaking through the man,

  85. I will raise up for myself a faithful priest

  86. who will do according to what is in my heart and mind.

  87. I will firmly establish his priestly house and they will minister before my anointed one.

  88. Always.

  89. There was no king in these days.

  90. And yet God says, I'm going to deal with the corrupt priests.

  91. I'm going to replace the whole family of the priests

  92. that are currently in charge with a man who will be faithful and his sons.

  93. And they will serve before my anointed one.

  94. Again, God speaking of a man of his choosing who is coming.

  95. Well, as the story of Israel continues,

  96. in the days of Samuel, we see Israel's first king rise to power.

  97. A man named Saul.

  98. And Saul is indeed anointed by God in the sense that God has Samuel,

  99. his prophet, go and pour oil over his head.

  100. But as the story goes on, we start to see that Saul is more of a king of the people's choosing

  101. than of God's.

  102. God allows him.

  103. God puts his choice behind the choice of the people.

  104. But we start to see that this man is more of a reflection of the people,

  105. the kind of king that they are desiring in their faithlessness

  106. and not the kind of king that God has in mind for his people.

  107. And so there comes this moment when after Saul disobeys

  108. and disregards God for the last time when God rejects Saul as king.

  109. And even though Saul continues to be on the throne of Israel

  110. and sit there as king,

  111. God begins to raise up the king of his choosing.

  112. God sends the prophet Samuel to the little town of Bethlehem.

  113. And Samuel is there for the express purpose of anointing Israel's next king.

  114. But even Samuel is surprised.

  115. When he comes to the end of Jesse's sons,

  116. having considered all of them,

  117. some of them fine-looking men,

  118. and God says,

  119. Nope.

  120. Do not consider his appearance

  121. or his height,

  122. for I have rejected him.

  123. The Lord does not look at the things people look at.

  124. People look at the outward appearance,

  125. but the Lord looks at the heart.

  126. So none of them are the ones that I have chosen,

  127. says the Lord.

  128. It's the last,

  129. the last son,

  130. the youngest son,

  131. the least son,

  132. the one who is left out in the fields

  133. to tend the sheep.

  134. So Jesse sent for him,

  135. the youngest son,

  136. and had him brought in.

  137. He was glowing with health

  138. and had a fine appearance

  139. and handsome features.

  140. Then the Lord said to Samuel,

  141. Rise and anoint him.

  142. This is the one.

  143. So Samuel took the horn of oil

  144. and anointed him

  145. in the presence of his brothers.

  146. And from that day on,

  147. the spirit of the Lord

  148. came powerfully on David.

  149. Think back to the words of Hannah

  150. as she prayed

  151. when Samuel was just a little baby.

  152. He raises the poor

  153. from the dust,

  154. seats them with princes

  155. and has them inherit

  156. a throne of honor.

  157. There David was,

  158. sitting in the dust

  159. with the sheep,

  160. quite literally.

  161. And the rest of 1 and 2 Samuel,

  162. these books of the Bible,

  163. is the story

  164. of how God raised David

  165. up from the dust

  166. and seated him

  167. on the throne

  168. of Israel.

  169. And so this is the backstory

  170. of this title,

  171. Messiah.

  172. Messiah.

  173. David was God's anointed one,

  174. God's Messiah

  175. in his day.

  176. He was the chosen king of God

  177. and his kingdom

  178. became very great.

  179. From that time on,

  180. every time we read

  181. that title,

  182. anointed one or Messiah

  183. in the Old Testament,

  184. almost always it refers

  185. to David

  186. or to another kingly figure.

  187. There's a couple exceptions

  188. to that,

  189. maybe a chosen prophet

  190. or a special servant

  191. of the Lord

  192. here and there.

  193. But mostly,

  194. that word,

  195. anointed one,

  196. refers to some kind

  197. of king.

  198. And that gets us

  199. thinking maybe,

  200. where did this whole idea

  201. even come from

  202. or start in the first place?

  203. Of God giving a king

  204. to his people.

  205. We might think back

  206. to the Garden of Eden

  207. where God commanded Adam

  208. to subdue the earth

  209. and rule over

  210. every other living thing.

  211. We see there

  212. that God's intentions

  213. and plan for man

  214. were noble.

  215. But we know the story.

  216. Adam disobeyed God

  217. and he plunged humanity

  218. into sin

  219. and rebellion.

  220. Later on,

  221. we see that God

  222. begins to build

  223. for himself a people

  224. as he makes

  225. great promises

  226. to a man named Abraham

  227. and his offspring.

  228. Abraham is promised

  229. to become

  230. the father of nations.

  231. And at times,

  232. God subdues

  233. and humbles kings

  234. under Abraham.

  235. And yet,

  236. at the end of Abraham's life,

  237. he's still very much

  238. a shepherd

  239. and a nomad

  240. living amongst

  241. a settled people

  242. in Canaan.

  243. Well,

  244. Abraham fathers Isaac

  245. and Isaac fathers Jacob.

  246. And to Jacob,

  247. God gives the name Israel.

  248. Israel becomes

  249. the father of 12 sons.

  250. And on his deathbed,

  251. Israel blesses his sons.

  252. By the Spirit of God,

  253. he speaks a blessing

  254. to each of them.

  255. And these were his words

  256. to Judah.

  257. The scepter

  258. will not depart

  259. from Judah,

  260. nor the ruler's staff

  261. from between his feet

  262. until he

  263. to whom it belongs

  264. shall come

  265. and the obedience

  266. of the nations

  267. shall be his.

  268. Amen.

  269. Could it be

  270. that some 800 years

  271. before David,

  272. that little boy

  273. in Bethlehem

  274. was even born,

  275. that little boy

  276. born in Judah,

  277. God was already

  278. planning something amazing.

  279. a king

  280. who would rule

  281. over a great kingdom.

  282. And then 400 years

  283. after that,

  284. as Israel was first

  285. entering the promised land,

  286. God spoke

  287. through Balaam,

  288. who was not even

  289. an Israelite,

  290. about a coming king.

  291. Balaam said,

  292. I see him,

  293. but not now.

  294. I behold him,

  295. but not near.

  296. A star

  297. will come out

  298. of Jacob.

  299. Jacob,

  300. a scepter

  301. will rise

  302. out of Israel.

  303. He will crush

  304. the foreheads

  305. of Moab,

  306. the skulls

  307. of all the people

  308. of Sheth.

  309. This was all

  310. part of God's plan

  311. long before

  312. any of it came to be,

  313. to give a king,

  314. for God to choose

  315. a king

  316. for his people.

  317. And David

  318. was a fulfillment

  319. of all these prophecies

  320. that God gave.

  321. But then,

  322. God adds even more

  323. to the promise

  324. in David's day.

  325. Not just of a king

  326. who will rule,

  327. David was that.

  328. Not just of a great kingdom,

  329. David had that,

  330. but he adds the promise

  331. of an enduring kingdom.

  332. To David himself,

  333. God says this,

  334. he says,

  335. when your days are over

  336. and you go to be

  337. with your ancestors,

  338. I will raise up

  339. your offspring

  340. to succeed you.

  341. one of your own sons,

  342. and I will establish

  343. his kingdom.

  344. He is the one

  345. who will build

  346. a house for me,

  347. and I will establish

  348. his throne

  349. forever.

  350. I will be

  351. his father,

  352. and he will be

  353. my son.

  354. I will never take

  355. my love away from him

  356. as I took it away

  357. from your predecessor.

  358. I will set him

  359. over my house

  360. and my kingdom

  361. forever.

  362. His throne

  363. will be established

  364. forever.

  365. And so,

  366. even though we have

  367. a Messiah,

  368. an anointed one,

  369. David,

  370. God's saying,

  371. it's going to continue,

  372. it's going bigger than this.

  373. There's a son of yours

  374. that's going to come,

  375. and he's going to rule

  376. as king

  377. forever

  378. over an enduring

  379. kingdom.

  380. I will be a father

  381. to him

  382. and establish

  383. his throne.

  384. The immediate

  385. fulfillment of that

  386. word was Solomon,

  387. the son of David,

  388. and his kingdom

  389. was truly greater

  390. than his father's.

  391. Solomon expanded

  392. the kingdom

  393. by the wisdom

  394. that God gave him,

  395. but then after

  396. Solomon died,

  397. the kingdom of David

  398. and the kingdom

  399. of Solomon

  400. became fractured

  401. and divided,

  402. and it spiraled

  403. down.

  404. The kingdom

  405. of David

  406. and Solomon

  407. became as a memory

  408. of the good old days,

  409. that golden century

  410. to which we long

  411. to return.

  412. Nations

  413. and powers

  414. rose around

  415. Israel,

  416. empires rose up,

  417. in fact,

  418. God even says,

  419. he even takes

  420. the credit

  421. for raising

  422. them up

  423. and for using

  424. them to punish

  425. the people

  426. of Israel

  427. for their

  428. unfaithfulness

  429. to him.

  430. The words

  431. of the prophets

  432. spoken through

  433. those days

  434. are difficult.

  435. They are heavy.

  436. God was very

  437. angry at how

  438. his people

  439. turned away

  440. from him

  441. to all manner

  442. of wickedness,

  443. and yet,

  444. because God

  445. is merciful

  446. and compassionate

  447. and faithful,

  448. he was not

  449. finished

  450. with Israel.

  451. God did not

  452. intend to go

  453. back on his

  454. word.

  455. Even through

  456. the prophets

  457. in those

  458. dark days

  459. of the kings

  460. and through

  461. the time

  462. of the exile

  463. and even

  464. afterwards,

  465. through the

  466. prophets,

  467. God spoke

  468. again and

  469. again and

  470. again of a

  471. coming anointed

  472. one,

  473. a coming

  474. Messiah.

  475. Listen to the

  476. words God spoke

  477. through the

  478. prophet Micah.

  479. This is like

  480. hundreds of

  481. years after

  482. David lived.

  483. Marshal your

  484. troops now,

  485. city of

  486. troops,

  487. for a siege

  488. is laid

  489. against us.

  490. They will

  491. strike Israel's

  492. ruler on the

  493. cheek with a

  494. rod.

  495. But you,

  496. Bethlehem,

  497. Ephrathah,

  498. though you are

  499. small among

  500. the clans of

  501. Judah,

  502. out of you

  503. will come for

  504. me one who

  505. will be ruler

  506. over Israel

  507. whose origins

  508. are from of

  509. old,

  510. from ancient

  511. times.

  512. Therefore,

  513. Israel will be

  514. abandoned

  515. until the

  516. time when

  517. she who is

  518. in labor

  519. bears a

  520. son and

  521. the rest of

  522. his brothers

  523. return to

  524. join the

  525. Israelites.

  526. He will

  527. stand and

  528. shepherd his

  529. flock in the

  530. strength of

  531. the Lord,

  532. in the

  533. majesty of

  534. the name of

  535. the Lord

  536. his God,

  537. and they

  538. will live

  539. securely,

  540. for then

  541. his greatness

  542. will reach

  543. to the ends

  544. of the earth.

  545. So there's

  546. another ruler

  547. coming,

  548. there's another

  549. king of

  550. God's choosing,

  551. and he's

  552. coming out

  553. of the little

  554. town of

  555. Bethlehem.

  556. He's a

  557. king whose

  558. very existence

  559. goes back to

  560. older times,

  561. to ancient

  562. times.

  563. for the

  564. present,

  565. Micah says,

  566. Israel will

  567. be abandoned

  568. for a

  569. time.

  570. Punishment

  571. for sin

  572. will come,

  573. but then

  574. a woman

  575. will give

  576. birth to

  577. a son,

  578. and this

  579. son of

  580. hers

  581. will stand

  582. and shepherd

  583. his flock.

  584. You think

  585. back to

  586. David,

  587. he was a

  588. shepherd.

  589. shepherd,

  590. he will

  591. shepherd his

  592. flock by

  593. the power

  594. of God,

  595. and his

  596. flock will

  597. live securely.

  598. Why?

  599. Because his

  600. greatness,

  601. the greatness

  602. of this

  603. son born

  604. to a woman

  605. in Bethlehem,

  606. his greatness

  607. will reach

  608. to the ends

  609. of the earth.

  610. We're talking

  611. a global

  612. kingdom.

  613. Listen to

  614. the words

  615. God spoke

  616. long ago

  617. through the

  618. prophet

  619. Zechariah,

  620. again,

  621. centuries

  622. after David

  623. lived,

  624. still centuries

  625. before Jesus

  626. came.

  627. Rejoice

  628. greatly,

  629. daughter

  630. Zion.

  631. Shout,

  632. daughter

  633. Jerusalem.

  634. See,

  635. your king

  636. comes to

  637. you,

  638. righteous

  639. and victorious,

  640. lowly,

  641. and riding

  642. on a donkey,

  643. on a colt,

  644. the foal

  645. of a donkey.

  646. I will

  647. take away

  648. the chariots

  649. from Ephraim

  650. and the

  651. war horses

  652. from Jerusalem

  653. and the

  654. battle bow

  655. will be

  656. broken.

  657. He will

  658. proclaim

  659. peace

  660. to the

  661. nations.

  662. His rule

  663. will extend

  664. from sea

  665. to sea

  666. and from

  667. the river

  668. to the

  669. ends

  670. of the

  671. earth.

  672. So God's

  673. going to

  674. make the

  675. wars

  676. cease.

  677. He's going

  678. to bring

  679. lasting

  680. peace.

  681. He's going

  682. to do it

  683. through a

  684. king who

  685. will rule

  686. over all

  687. the earth

  688. and that

  689. king is

  690. the one

  691. who will

  692. come to

  693. you,

  694. Jerusalem,

  695. in a

  696. lowly

  697. manner,

  698. riding on

  699. a donkey.

  700. Not a

  701. war horse,

  702. but a

  703. donkey.

  704. Consider the

  705. words that

  706. God spoke

  707. long ago

  708. through the

  709. prophet Isaiah.

  710. Again,

  711. centuries after

  712. David lived,

  713. still centuries

  714. before Jesus

  715. came,

  716. Isaiah said

  717. this,

  718. nevertheless,

  719. there will be

  720. no more gloom

  721. for those

  722. who were

  723. in distress.

  724. In the

  725. past,

  726. he humbled

  727. the land

  728. of Zebulun

  729. and the

  730. land of

  731. Naphtali,

  732. but in

  733. the future,

  734. he will

  735. honor

  736. Galilee

  737. of the

  738. nations

  739. by the

  740. way of

  741. the sea

  742. beyond

  743. the Jordan.

  744. The people

  745. walking in

  746. darkness

  747. have seen

  748. a great

  749. light

  750. on those

  751. living in

  752. the land

  753. of deep

  754. darkness,

  755. a light

  756. has

  757. dawned.

  758. You have

  759. enlarged

  760. the nation

  761. and increased

  762. their joy.

  763. They rejoice

  764. before you

  765. as people

  766. rejoice at

  767. the harvest,

  768. as warriors

  769. rejoice when

  770. dividing the

  771. plunder.

  772. For as in

  773. the day of

  774. Midian's

  775. defeat,

  776. you have

  777. shattered

  778. the yoke

  779. that burdens

  780. them,

  781. the bar

  782. across their

  783. shoulders,

  784. the rod

  785. of their

  786. oppressor.

  787. Every

  788. warrior's

  789. boot

  790. used in

  791. battle,

  792. and every

  793. garment

  794. rolled in

  795. blood

  796. will be

  797. destined

  798. for burning,

  799. will be

  800. fuel for

  801. the fire.

  802. For to

  803. us,

  804. a child

  805. is born.

  806. To us,

  807. a son

  808. is given.

  809. And the

  810. government

  811. will be

  812. on his

  813. shoulders.

  814. And he

  815. will be

  816. called

  817. Wonderful

  818. Counselor,

  819. Mighty

  820. God,

  821. Everlasting

  822. Father,

  823. Prince

  824. of Peace,

  825. of the

  826. greatness

  827. of his

  828. government

  829. and peace.

  830. There

  831. will be

  832. no end.

  833. He will

  834. reign on

  835. David's

  836. throne and

  837. over his

  838. kingdom,

  839. establishing and

  840. upholding it

  841. with justice

  842. and righteousness

  843. from that

  844. time on

  845. and forever.

  846. The zeal of

  847. the Lord

  848. Almighty

  849. will accomplish

  850. this.

  851. So God's

  852. going to

  853. make the

  854. war cease,

  855. he says,

  856. so much

  857. so that

  858. the warrior

  859. will burn

  860. his old

  861. blood-stained

  862. uniform that

  863. he was

  864. saving in

  865. case he

  866. needed to

  867. go to

  868. war again

  869. sometime.

  870. The peace

  871. just keeps

  872. going.

  873. Don't need

  874. this anymore.

  875. Let's burn

  876. it.

  877. Why?

  878. The peace

  879. keeps going

  880. because to

  881. us,

  882. a child

  883. is born.

  884. To us,

  885. a son

  886. is given.

  887. And he

  888. will rule.

  889. The government

  890. will be on

  891. his shoulders.

  892. He will

  893. take up

  894. the throne

  895. of David.

  896. He will

  897. establish it.

  898. He will

  899. uphold it

  900. from that

  901. time on

  902. and forever.

  903. And it's

  904. going to be

  905. a kingdom

  906. of justice

  907. and righteousness,

  908. he says.

  909. No more

  910. government

  911. corruption.

  912. And the

  913. light

  914. of this

  915. is going

  916. to peak

  917. over the

  918. horizon

  919. where?

  920. In

  921. Galilee.

  922. By the

  923. little path

  924. that goes

  925. along by

  926. the sea

  927. north of

  928. the Jordan

  929. River.

  930. That's

  931. where it'll

  932. first break.

  933. Listen to

  934. the words

  935. God spoke

  936. long ago

  937. centuries

  938. after David

  939. lived,

  940. centuries

  941. before Jesus

  942. came.

  943. Also from

  944. the lips

  945. of Isaiah,

  946. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  947. 11.

  948. A shoot

  949. will come

  950. up from

  951. the stump

  952. of Jesse.

  953. From his

  954. roots

  955. a branch

  956. will bear

  957. fruit.

  958. The spirit

  959. of the

  960. Lord will

  961. rest on

  962. him.

  963. The spirit

  964. of wisdom

  965. and of

  966. understanding.

  967. The spirit

  968. of counsel

  969. and of

  970. might.

  971. The spirit

  972. of the

  973. knowledge

  974. and fear

  975. of the

  976. Lord.

  977. And he

  978. will delight

  979. in the fear

  980. of the

  981. Lord.

  982. He will

  983. not judge

  984. by what

  985. he sees

  986. with his

  987. eyes or

  988. decide by

  989. what he

  990. hears with

  991. his ears.

  992. But with

  993. righteousness

  994. he will

  995. judge the

  996. needy.

  997. With

  998. justice he

  999. will give

  1000. decisions

  1001. for the

  1002. poor of

  1003. the earth.

  1004. He will

  1005. strike the

  1006. earth with

  1007. the rod

  1008. of his

  1009. mouth.

  1010. With

  1011. the breath

  1012. of his

  1013. lips he

  1014. will slay

  1015. the wicked.

  1016. Righteousness

  1017. will be his

  1018. belt and

  1019. faithfulness

  1020. the sash

  1021. around his

  1022. waist.

  1023. The wolf

  1024. will live

  1025. with the

  1026. lamb.

  1027. The leopard

  1028. will lie

  1029. down with

  1030. the goat.

  1031. The calf

  1032. and the

  1033. lion and

  1034. the yearling

  1035. together and

  1036. a little

  1037. child will

  1038. lead them.

  1039. The cow

  1040. will feed

  1041. with the

  1042. bear.

  1043. Their young

  1044. will lie

  1045. down together

  1046. and the

  1047. lion will

  1048. eat straw

  1049. like the

  1050. ox.

  1051. The infant

  1052. will play

  1053. near the

  1054. cobra's

  1055. den.

  1056. The young

  1057. child will

  1058. put its

  1059. hand into

  1060. the

  1061. viper's

  1062. nest.

  1063. They will

  1064. neither

  1065. harm nor

  1066. destroy on

  1067. all my

  1068. holy mountain

  1069. for the

  1070. earth will

  1071. be filled

  1072. with the

  1073. knowledge of

  1074. the Lord

  1075. as the

  1076. waters cover

  1077. the sea.

  1078. Do you

  1079. hear this?

  1080. God's going

  1081. to bring a

  1082. righteous and

  1083. just ruler

  1084. to power,

  1085. one who will

  1086. deal with the

  1087. wicked,

  1088. one who will

  1089. bring a

  1090. peace so

  1091. deep to

  1092. this earth

  1093. that even

  1094. the dumb

  1095. animals can

  1096. feel it.

  1097. Even the

  1098. animals won't

  1099. dare to

  1100. harm each

  1101. other or

  1102. to harm a

  1103. child because

  1104. that's how

  1105. full of the

  1106. knowledge of

  1107. the Lord

  1108. they will

  1109. be when

  1110. this king

  1111. comes and

  1112. his presence

  1113. fills the

  1114. earth.

  1115. There will

  1116. be justice,

  1117. true justice,

  1118. even for the

  1119. poor and the

  1120. needy,

  1121. the weak and

  1122. the powerless.

  1123. No more

  1124. bribes,

  1125. no more

  1126. corruption,

  1127. and who

  1128. will bring

  1129. all this

  1130. about?

  1131. A branch

  1132. which springs

  1133. up from the

  1134. stump of

  1135. Jesse,

  1136. the father

  1137. of David,

  1138. a man whom

  1139. God himself

  1140. will put his

  1141. spirit upon.

  1142. Listen to the

  1143. words God

  1144. spoke long

  1145. ago.

  1146. Centuries

  1147. after David

  1148. lived and

  1149. centuries before

  1150. Jesus came,

  1151. also words of

  1152. Isaiah from

  1153. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  1154. 42.

  1155. Here is my

  1156. servant whom

  1157. I uphold,

  1158. my chosen one

  1159. in whom I

  1160. delight.

  1161. I will put my

  1162. spirit on him

  1163. and he will

  1164. bring justice to

  1165. the nations.

  1166. He will not

  1167. shout or cry

  1168. out or raise

  1169. his voice in

  1170. the streets.

  1171. a bruised

  1172. reed he

  1173. will not

  1174. break and

  1175. a smoldering

  1176. wick he

  1177. will not

  1178. snuff out.

  1179. In

  1180. faithfulness he

  1181. will bring

  1182. forth justice.

  1183. He will not

  1184. falter or be

  1185. discouraged till

  1186. he establishes

  1187. justice on

  1188. earth.

  1189. In his

  1190. teaching the

  1191. islands will

  1192. put their

  1193. hope.

  1194. hope.

  1195. This is what

  1196. God,

  1197. the Lord

  1198. says.

  1199. God's going

  1200. to bring

  1201. something truly

  1202. amazing about

  1203. on this

  1204. earth.

  1205. Not just

  1206. justice for

  1207. Israel but

  1208. justice for

  1209. the nations.

  1210. And not

  1211. some sick and

  1212. twisted form of

  1213. justice like

  1214. that proclaimed

  1215. by a wicked

  1216. tyrant who

  1217. simply exterminates

  1218. everyone who

  1219. disagrees with

  1220. him and rules

  1221. by terror.

  1222. but this

  1223. servant of

  1224. God will

  1225. bring forth

  1226. justice in

  1227. faithfulness.

  1228. He will be a

  1229. ruler who

  1230. deals gently

  1231. with the

  1232. weak and

  1233. the hurting.

  1234. He will be

  1235. the hope and

  1236. light of the

  1237. nations.

  1238. This passage

  1239. goes on.

  1240. I the Lord

  1241. have called

  1242. you in

  1243. righteousness.

  1244. I will take

  1245. hold of your

  1246. hand.

  1247. I will keep

  1248. you and will

  1249. make you to

  1250. be a covenant

  1251. for the

  1252. people and

  1253. a light for

  1254. the Gentiles

  1255. to open

  1256. eyes that

  1257. are blind,

  1258. to free

  1259. captives from

  1260. prison,

  1261. and to

  1262. release from

  1263. the dungeon

  1264. those who

  1265. sit in

  1266. darkness.

  1267. He himself

  1268. will be a

  1269. covenant

  1270. between God

  1271. and man.

  1272. He will be

  1273. the hope and

  1274. light of the

  1275. nations.

  1276. Who will he

  1277. be?

  1278. He will be the

  1279. servant of

  1280. God's choosing.

  1281. The one in

  1282. whom God

  1283. delights.

  1284. The one

  1285. upon whom

  1286. God puts

  1287. his spirit.

  1288. He will be

  1289. one who

  1290. opens the

  1291. eyes of

  1292. the blind.

  1293. One more

  1294. from the

  1295. prophet

  1296. Daniel.

  1297. Daniel had

  1298. a great

  1299. vision given

  1300. to him by

  1301. God.

  1302. Again, this is

  1303. centuries after

  1304. David lived and

  1305. this is centuries

  1306. before Jesus

  1307. came.

  1308. What did

  1309. Daniel see in

  1310. this vision?

  1311. In my vision

  1312. at night, I

  1313. looked and

  1314. there before me

  1315. was one like a

  1316. son of man

  1317. coming with the

  1318. clouds of

  1319. heaven.

  1320. He approached

  1321. the ancient of

  1322. days and was

  1323. led into his

  1324. presence.

  1325. He was given

  1326. authority,

  1327. glory, and

  1328. sovereign power.

  1329. All nations

  1330. and peoples of

  1331. every language

  1332. worshipped him.

  1333. His dominion is

  1334. an everlasting

  1335. dominion that

  1336. will not pass

  1337. away and his

  1338. kingdom is one

  1339. that will never

  1340. be destroyed.

  1341. So someone's

  1342. going to have

  1343. dominion over

  1344. all the nations

  1345. and peoples of

  1346. every language.

  1347. It's a

  1348. dominion that

  1349. will last

  1350. forever.

  1351. It's a

  1352. kingdom that

  1353. will never

  1354. pass away or

  1355. be destroyed.

  1356. And on the

  1357. throne of this

  1358. kingdom is

  1359. someone who

  1360. has been

  1361. given authority

  1362. by God.

  1363. A sovereign

  1364. of God's

  1365. choosing.

  1366. Who is it

  1367. that will

  1368. rule and

  1369. reign?

  1370. It is a

  1371. son of

  1372. man whom

  1373. God will

  1374. give this

  1375. to.

  1376. A king of

  1377. his choosing.

  1378. A man of

  1379. his choosing.

  1380. I think we

  1381. all know who

  1382. that person

  1383. is.

  1384. But in the

  1385. weeks and

  1386. months ahead

  1387. we're going

  1388. to be working

  1389. our way

  1390. through Luke's

  1391. account of

  1392. all that

  1393. happened with

  1394. Jesus when

  1395. he first

  1396. came.

  1397. We're going

  1398. to hear it

  1399. and see it

  1400. from Luke's

  1401. well-ordered

  1402. account.

  1403. And we're

  1404. going to see

  1405. how Jesus

  1406. really is.

  1407. That one

  1408. that was

  1409. foretold.

  1410. The Messiah

  1411. that we've

  1412. been waiting

  1413. for.

  1414. The one

  1415. who came

  1416. and fulfilled

  1417. much of

  1418. what was

  1419. promised.

  1420. And the

  1421. one who

  1422. will come

  1423. again and

  1424. fulfill the

  1425. rest of

  1426. what God

  1427. has promised

  1428. someday.

  1429. Can you

  1430. imagine what

  1431. it must have

  1432. felt like in

  1433. Israel for

  1434. the faithful in

  1435. Israel who

  1436. had heard all

  1437. these words of

  1438. God spoken

  1439. through the

  1440. centuries?

  1441. Can you feel

  1442. the longing that

  1443. they would have

  1444. had for all

  1445. of this to

  1446. finally come

  1447. true?

  1448. for God's

  1449. chosen king,

  1450. God's Messiah

  1451. to come.

  1452. And the

  1453. years went

  1454. by.

  1455. Decades

  1456. turned into

  1457. centuries.

  1458. After the

  1459. prophet Micah

  1460. spoke were

  1461. 400 years

  1462. of silence.

  1463. No word

  1464. from God,

  1465. no word

  1466. from the

  1467. prophets.

  1468. But then

  1469. finally as we'll

  1470. hear next

  1471. Sunday,

  1472. God breaks

  1473. the silence.

  1474. let's pray.

  1475. Father in

  1476. heaven,

  1477. only you

  1478. can tell

  1479. the future

  1480. and then

  1481. bring it

  1482. about.

  1483. It's

  1484. amazing when

  1485. we look back

  1486. over your

  1487. story,

  1488. how you

  1489. were hinting

  1490. at what you

  1491. were going

  1492. to do.

  1493. You were

  1494. telling of

  1495. it

  1496. thousands

  1497. of years

  1498. before it

  1499. happened.

  1500. And that

  1501. there's still

  1502. more to

  1503. come.

  1504. We're in

  1505. awe.

  1506. We long

  1507. for that

  1508. kingdom that

  1509. we read

  1510. about,

  1511. Lord.

  1512. And we

  1513. know that

  1514. it will be

  1515. your son

  1516. on the

  1517. throne.

  1518. I pray that

  1519. we would all

  1520. know that,

  1521. that we would

  1522. trust it with

  1523. all our

  1524. hearts,

  1525. and that

  1526. we would

  1527. live in

  1528. light of

  1529. that.

  1530. Give us

  1531. strength.

  1532. Give us

  1533. understanding.

  1534. Give us

  1535. wisdom.

  1536. Bless us as

  1537. we go from

  1538. here today,

  1539. Lord,

  1540. into the

  1541. world with

  1542. the news of

  1543. this king.

  1544. In Jesus'

  1545. name,

  1546. amen.

  1547. Amen.
