  1. All right, well this morning we are embarking on a new series of sermons.

  2. We're going to be working our way through the Gospel of Luke.

  3. So if you have your Bible with you, open it up to the first chapter of Luke.

  4. This is the third book in the New Testament in your Bible, if you are looking for it there.

  5. And Luke is the longest of the Gospel accounts which tell the story of Jesus.

  6. Right out of the gate as we launch on into this new series, we just want to take a few minutes to look at some important background kinds of things.

  7. First of all, who was Luke?

  8. According to the Apostle Paul in his letter, Luke was a physician.

  9. He was one of the men who traveled with Paul and worked with Paul in spreading the good news about Jesus.

  10. What's unique about Luke's Gospel?

  11. We have four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

  12. And all of them tell the story of Jesus.

  13. What's unique about Luke's Gospel?

  14. Well, out of the four Gospels, usually it's John that we think of as the one that stands out the most, as being the most different.

  15. He writes with a very different style.

  16. He touches on a lot of things that the others don't.

  17. The other three Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, they have very much similar content in them.

  18. And so they're often referred to as the Synoptic Gospels because of that.

  19. And scholars today, they analyze and study each of the Synoptic Gospels.

  20. And they compare them with each other.

  21. And they make guesses about which one of them wrote their Gospel first.

  22. And, you know, whether one or more of these Gospels use the other as source material.

  23. Because why the similarities between them?

  24. Many are confident that there's some kind of a common source, whether it was an apostle or the earlier writings of an apostle that they all drew from, Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

  25. Others see Mark as being the source, the first one to write his Gospel.

  26. And then the others kind of use that as a starting place for writing theirs.

  27. We're going to leave all of that analysis to the scholars.

  28. But something useful that they've come up with through their analysis, while much of Luke has similar content to Matthew and Mark,

  29. about 42% of Luke's content is only found in Luke.

  30. So we have exclusive details about the birth of Jesus and his infancy.

  31. We have accounts of four miracles that were not included in the other Gospels.

  32. There are 15 parables that Jesus told that we only hear about from Luke.

  33. There are exclusive details about the resurrection appearances of Jesus that are only in Luke.

  34. And then another really unique thing about Luke's Gospel is that it's the only Gospel with a sequel.

  35. Luke continues the story after Jesus' resurrection.

  36. And he tells the story of how the church began to grow and the Gospel about Jesus began to spread in the book of Acts, the Acts of the Apostles.

  37. So Luke has so much to say about Jesus, we would really be missing out on a lot if it weren't for him taking the time to sit down and write this account and its sequel.

  38. Well, what else do we know about Luke?

  39. Back to the scholars for a second, there's a whole discussion between them about whether Luke was a Jew or not a Jew, whether he was a Gentile.

  40. And they've got their observations that they bring up.

  41. Luke seems to have a very good understanding of the Old Testament Scriptures.

  42. And he seems very eager to highlight how Jesus handled himself on the issue of Sabbath and the things Jesus taught about Sabbath.

  43. But there's a passage in Acts where Luke refers to how the Jews named a place, something which in their language means, and then he goes on to talk about it.

  44. And then there's another place in Paul's letter to the Colossian church where Paul lists the Jews who have been working with him by name.

  45. And Luke's name is not there, even though he is listed as a co-worker of Paul's in other places.

  46. So we don't know for sure, but Luke was likely a Gentile.

  47. He was likely a non-Jew.

  48. And maybe he converted to Judaism before Christ, or perhaps he was just a God-fearing Gentile who was well acquainted with the Jewish faith.

  49. Church history and tradition have it that Luke was from the city of Antioch in Syria, that he was unmarried, childless, and lived a fairly long life.

  50. We might wonder, when did Luke write this gospel that we're about to read?

  51. Well, since Luke's gospel account is referred to in the book of Acts, the sequel, and the book of Acts goes right up to about 62 AD.

  52. Paul is in Rome, imprisoned, the first time.

  53. And it doesn't tell about Paul's death, which was later on in the 60s.

  54. So we know that Acts had to have been written after the events that it describes, and then probably sometime before Paul died.

  55. Which means that Luke had to have completed his gospel sometime before Acts was written, in that time frame.

  56. So some suggest that it was in the early 60s that Luke wrote this gospel, and then Acts shortly after.

  57. Others, maybe an even earlier date.

  58. Either way, it wasn't too long after the events of Jesus' life.

  59. We're talking within about 30 years of it.

  60. And then, for the background stuff, finally, why did Luke write this gospel?

  61. And for the answer to this, let's now look at Luke's introduction to his book, the first four verses.

  62. Luke writes,

  63. Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

  64. just as they were handed down to us by those who, from the first,

  65. were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

  66. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning,

  67. I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

  68. so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

  69. So why did Luke write this account of Jesus?

  70. He writes it for a man named Theophilus,

  71. so that you, Theophilus, may know the certainty of the things that you have been taught.

  72. So that's Luke's goal.

  73. It seems Theophilus, whoever he was, we don't know anymore today,

  74. but it seems that he was already a believer in Jesus,

  75. but perhaps had some doubts.

  76. Or perhaps there were some false teachers or opponents that were speaking really loudly in his corner,

  77. shaking things up for him.

  78. Whatever the case, Luke compiles and writes this account so that Theophilus can have certainty.

  79. What really did happen with Jesus?

  80. What did he say?

  81. What did he really say and teach?

  82. What has really been fulfilled among us?

  83. And there's a desire here on Luke's part for an orderly account.

  84. I, too, decided to write an orderly account for you.

  85. As you can imagine, with all that's happened in the three years of Jesus' public ministry,

  86. and then even all that's happened after that,

  87. as the news spreads all over the Mediterranean world,

  88. there could be a lot of,

  89. well, I heard that he said this,

  90. or I heard that he did this,

  91. and, well, so-and-so said that it went this way.

  92. It could be easy to get all jumbled up.

  93. Wouldn't it be good to have an orderly,

  94. accurate account of just what did happen with Jesus?

  95. That's Luke's goal here.

  96. And we also get a little more info about Luke here as well,

  97. because we might be wondering, you know,

  98. where did Luke get all this from that he writes?

  99. We notice here that Luke himself was not a firsthand eyewitness of Jesus.

  100. He says,

  101. So Luke does not claim to be a firsthand eyewitness.

  102. He separates himself from those who were.

  103. What they saw and heard,

  104. they passed along to us,

  105. is what he says.

  106. Not only that,

  107. but many have already undertaken to do this thing that Luke is doing here,

  108. to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us.

  109. So this kind of adds credibility for Theophilus.

  110. Like,

  111. this isn't just a bunch of stories cooked up by a few little guys.

  112. Like,

  113. no,

  114. these things that happened were public.

  115. Many have already tried to gather up the testimonies from various people

  116. and put together an account like I'm doing here now,

  117. because there's just so much,

  118. so much that happened.

  119. So many people's lives were impacted.

  120. So many people witnessed it.

  121. And so know that this is not a new or strange thing.

  122. But then we see that Luke has not been one to just accept all this about Jesus

  123. without checking into it deeply.

  124. He says,

  125. I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning.

  126. And so Luke himself,

  127. he wasn't content to just hear all this stuff about Jesus secondhand.

  128. And rightly so.

  129. Because the news coming out of Galilee and Jerusalem about Jesus was astonishing.

  130. Miracles being done.

  131. Luke is saying,

  132. I went back to the sources to verify these things myself.

  133. And,

  134. you know,

  135. scholars,

  136. as they read about this,

  137. they assume that Luke just collected up the writings of others.

  138. And maybe it's because scholars are more focused on writing and writings.

  139. But when I look at some of the content here in Luke's gospel,

  140. like the details surrounding Jesus' birth,

  141. I mean,

  142. this is something that the majority in Israel knew little about at first.

  143. I would suggest that quite likely Luke went straight to the sources and actually met with and talked to Elizabeth and Zachariah.

  144. met with and talked to Mary,

  145. the mother of Jesus.

  146. Met with various people who had been healed and heard from them the actual testimony of how Jesus did it.

  147. Met with those two guys that were on the road to Emmaus and encountered Jesus alive and then wrote these things down.

  148. along with the stuff that the apostles themselves had already written and recorded.

  149. I mean,

  150. how else could we have the very words and details of some of these private prayers and conversations and angelic visits and personal encounters?

  151. I think Luke's telling us right here,

  152. no,

  153. I went back to the sources and carefully investigated everything from the beginning.

  154. And now I want to lay it all out for you,

  155. Theophilus,

  156. so that you can know with certainty just what did happen with Jesus.

  157. What did he say?

  158. What did he do?

  159. Let's keep going.

  160. It all started,

  161. according to Luke,

  162. in the time of King Herod in Judea with a priest named Zachariah.

  163. In the time of Herod,

  164. King of Judea,

  165. there was a priest named Zachariah who belonged to the priestly division.

  166. His wife,

  167. Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.

  168. Both of them were righteous in the sight of God,

  169. observing all the Lord's commands and decrees blamelessly.

  170. But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive

  171. and they were both very old.

  172. So it all started with a priest named Zachariah,

  173. says Luke.

  174. And Luke states Zachariah's priestly lineage.

  175. Both he and his wife were of the priestly line,

  176. descended from Aaron,

  177. the brother of Moses.

  178. And both of them,

  179. he says,

  180. were righteous in the sight of God,

  181. observing all the Lord's commands and decrees blamelessly.

  182. Now this doesn't mean that they were sinless,

  183. living perfectly before God,

  184. in perfect obedience.

  185. But it means that the normal everyday lives of these two

  186. were lived doing what was right in the sight of God.

  187. These are people who sought to honor God in everything.

  188. They were people of excellent reputation.

  189. And everybody around them knew it.

  190. Blame or accusation from others

  191. just wouldn't have stuck to them

  192. because everybody knew that they feared the Lord,

  193. that they loved the Lord.

  194. They really stood out among people

  195. as those who actually obey God's commands,

  196. persistently and consistently.

  197. Much like the righteous faithful of the Old Testament,

  198. men like King David.

  199. But, says Luke,

  200. Zachariah and his wife were childless

  201. because Elizabeth had not been able to conceive

  202. and they were both very old.

  203. So the reason they had no children

  204. was because Elizabeth had been barren.

  205. And it wasn't a punishment from God.

  206. Many in those days equated children

  207. with the blessing and favor of God

  208. and the lack of children

  209. with being punished or cursed by God.

  210. But Luke's already told us

  211. they were both righteous people.

  212. They had God's favor.

  213. And as you can imagine,

  214. they tried and tried and tried

  215. to conceive over the years,

  216. but nothing.

  217. Now here they are,

  218. elderly,

  219. no children.

  220. They were both very old.

  221. For those of you who are younger

  222. and may not know this,

  223. there comes a time in a woman's life

  224. when it is no longer physically

  225. or biologically possible

  226. to have a baby.

  227. It's exceedingly rare

  228. for a woman to conceive

  229. and have a child after the age of 50

  230. without some form of fertility treatment

  231. or all kinds of stuff

  232. that we do today

  233. with modern medicine and technology.

  234. But they didn't have any of that back then.

  235. And judging by the language here,

  236. Zachariah and Elizabeth

  237. were not just old,

  238. but very old.

  239. And so they had come to that point in life

  240. where it was now physically

  241. and biologically impossible

  242. for Elizabeth to have children.

  243. Once when Zachariah's division was on duty

  244. and he was serving as priest before God,

  245. he was chosen by lot

  246. according to the custom of the priesthood

  247. to go into the temple of the Lord

  248. and burn incense.

  249. So Luke sets the scene for us.

  250. Zachariah has been chosen

  251. from among the priestly families

  252. to come to Jerusalem

  253. and to do his priestly duties

  254. at the temple of the Lord.

  255. There was a temple

  256. to Yahweh, the Lord,

  257. the God of Israel

  258. in the city of Jerusalem.

  259. And at the temple,

  260. they had outer courts

  261. and they had inner courts.

  262. They had an altar

  263. for sacrificing animals.

  264. And then they had

  265. like a room

  266. that was called the Holy Place.

  267. And only the priest

  268. could enter into that room.

  269. And they would burn incense

  270. and other things.

  271. They would burn

  272. a fragrant, sweet-smelling incense

  273. to God

  274. in there.

  275. So this is what Zachariah

  276. was doing.

  277. The worshipers, he says,

  278. are assembled outside

  279. and they're praying.

  280. And Zachariah is alone

  281. in the Holy Place

  282. burning this incense.

  283. Verse 11.

  284. Then an angel of the Lord

  285. appeared to him

  286. standing at the right side

  287. of the altar of incense.

  288. When Zachariah saw him,

  289. he was startled

  290. and was gripped with fear.

  291. But the angel said to him,

  292. Do not be afraid,

  293. Zachariah.

  294. Your prayer

  295. has been heard.

  296. Your wife, Elizabeth,

  297. will bear you

  298. a son

  299. and you are to call him

  300. John.

  301. He will be a joy

  302. and delight to you

  303. and many

  304. will rejoice

  305. because of his birth.

  306. For he will be great

  307. in the sight of the Lord.

  308. He is never to take wine

  309. or other fermented drink

  310. and he will be filled

  311. with the Holy Spirit

  312. even before

  313. he is born.

  314. He will bring back

  315. many of the people of Israel

  316. to the Lord their God.

  317. And he will go on

  318. before the Lord

  319. in the spirit

  320. and power

  321. of Elijah

  322. to turn the hearts

  323. of the parents

  324. to their children

  325. and the disobedient

  326. to the wisdom

  327. of the righteous

  328. to make ready

  329. a people

  330. prepared

  331. for the Lord.

  332. Wow.

  333. Amazing.

  334. Can you imagine

  335. what that would have been like

  336. for Zachariah

  337. on that day?

  338. He's going in.

  339. He's alone.

  340. There's nobody else

  341. in the room

  342. and then all of a sudden

  343. bam!

  344. Right in front of him.

  345. An angel.

  346. And the angel

  347. begins to speak to him.

  348. Luke emphasizes

  349. the fear

  350. in Zachariah's heart

  351. in that moment.

  352. Quite literally

  353. he was troubled.

  354. He was unsettled.

  355. Frightened.

  356. Fear

  357. fell upon him.

  358. And what does the angel

  359. say

  360. to Zachariah?

  361. Well quite a lot.

  362. First of all

  363. the angel tells him

  364. that his prayers

  365. have been heard

  366. and that his wife

  367. Elizabeth

  368. will bear him a son

  369. who he is to call

  370. John.

  371. With both

  372. Zachariah

  373. and Elizabeth

  374. being righteous people

  375. you can imagine

  376. just how often

  377. they might have

  378. prayed

  379. to God

  380. for a child.

  381. Again

  382. and again

  383. and again.

  384. How many times

  385. had they called out

  386. to God

  387. to give them a child

  388. over the years?

  389. And maybe by now

  390. they'd stopped asking

  391. given their ages.

  392. But the angel

  393. tells them

  394. that the prayer

  395. that they had been praying

  396. over all those years

  397. was heard

  398. by God

  399. and the time

  400. has now come

  401. for his answer.

  402. you and Elizabeth

  403. are going to have

  404. a son.

  405. And we notice

  406. the language here

  407. it's very clear

  408. this is not going to come

  409. through some kind of

  410. surrogate mother

  411. or adoption

  412. or something else.

  413. Elizabeth

  414. will bear you

  415. a son.

  416. And this son

  417. says the angel

  418. will be a joy

  419. and delight to you

  420. and many

  421. will rejoice

  422. in his birth.

  423. I mean

  424. we can imagine

  425. how this baby

  426. would bring joy

  427. to Zachariah and Elizabeth

  428. because that's what

  429. children do, right?

  430. Most of the time.

  431. But this is greater

  432. than that.

  433. It says

  434. he will be a joy

  435. and delight to you

  436. and many

  437. will rejoice

  438. because of his birth

  439. for

  440. because

  441. he will be great

  442. in the sight

  443. of the Lord.

  444. So this child

  445. will be special.

  446. A man

  447. who will be

  448. great

  449. among

  450. men

  451. not by our

  452. usual way

  453. of measuring it

  454. but by

  455. God's

  456. way of measuring it

  457. in the sight

  458. of the Lord.

  459. And the angel

  460. gives some instruction.

  461. He's never to take

  462. wine

  463. or fermented

  464. drink.

  465. God prescribes

  466. one way

  467. in which he is

  468. to be set apart

  469. in the way

  470. that he lives.

  471. He's to live

  472. differently from others

  473. by abstaining

  474. from alcohol.

  475. But more

  476. significantly

  477. than that

  478. God says

  479. that this child

  480. who is to be

  481. called John

  482. will be filled

  483. with the Holy Spirit

  484. of God

  485. even before

  486. he is born.

  487. Think about that.

  488. God's saying

  489. I'm going to put

  490. my own spirit

  491. upon this child

  492. while he's still

  493. in the womb.

  494. These words

  495. were written

  496. almost 2,000

  497. years ago

  498. but don't they

  499. emphasize

  500. the humanity

  501. and personhood

  502. of a pre-born

  503. child?

  504. A person

  505. still developing

  506. and growing

  507. in the earliest

  508. stages of human

  509. life, yes

  510. yet God's

  511. spirit

  512. can fill him

  513. there.

  514. And what is

  515. this child

  516. destined to do?

  517. Verse 16

  518. He will bring

  519. back many

  520. of the people

  521. of Israel

  522. to the Lord

  523. their God.

  524. This son

  525. of yours

  526. Zachariah

  527. is going

  528. to be

  529. instrumental

  530. in turning

  531. the hearts

  532. of the people

  533. of Israel

  534. back to Yahweh

  535. back to the

  536. Lord

  537. their God.

  538. Verse 17

  539. This child

  540. is going

  541. to serve

  542. the Lord

  543. in the spirit

  544. and power

  545. of Elijah.

  546. Elijah was

  547. a prophet

  548. from many

  549. centuries

  550. earlier.

  551. probably the

  552. greatest

  553. and most

  554. well-known

  555. of the

  556. prophets

  557. other than

  558. Moses.

  559. There's

  560. going to

  561. be a

  562. similarity

  563. to Elijah

  564. and his

  565. prophetic

  566. ministry

  567. and what

  568. God did

  569. through him

  570. and your

  571. son

  572. Zachariah.

  573. But as

  574. we'll find

  575. out it's

  576. not mainly

  577. that John's

  578. going to do

  579. great miracles

  580. like Elijah

  581. did.

  582. It has

  583. more to do

  584. with the

  585. spirit and

  586. the tone

  587. and the

  588. message.

  589. of John's

  590. ministry

  591. in the

  592. same way

  593. that Elijah

  594. called the

  595. people of

  596. Israel back

  597. to God

  598. in the

  599. days where

  600. things were

  601. going off

  602. the rail

  603. and there

  604. was a

  605. wicked king

  606. in power

  607. so too

  608. John will

  609. be a prophet

  610. of the Lord

  611. who calls

  612. the nation

  613. back to

  614. God.

  615. He's going

  616. to turn the

  617. hearts of

  618. parents to

  619. their children

  620. says the

  621. angel.

  622. We glance

  623. backwards

  624. the very

  625. last thing

  626. spoken by

  627. the Old

  628. Testament

  629. prophet

  630. Malachi

  631. 400 years

  632. before this.

  633. There's been

  634. no prophet

  635. since,

  636. no word

  637. of the

  638. Lord

  639. since.

  640. The very

  641. last words

  642. of Malachi

  643. in Malachi

    Malachi 4 chapter mention

  644. chapter 4

  645. God says

  646. see I

  647. will send

  648. the prophet

  649. Elijah to

  650. you before

  651. the great

  652. and dreadful

  653. day of the

  654. Lord comes.

  655. He will

  656. turn the

  657. hearts of

  658. the parents

  659. to their

  660. children.

  661. That's the

  662. same thing

  663. that the

  664. angel says

  665. John is

  666. going to

  667. do.

  668. He's going

  669. to turn

  670. the hearts

  671. of the

  672. parents to

  673. their

  674. children

  675. and the

  676. disobedient

  677. to the

  678. wisdom of

  679. the righteous.

  680. When people

  681. turn back to

  682. God it

  683. changes

  684. everything.

  685. It changes

  686. your heart.

  687. Self-centeredness

  688. and selfishness

  689. are replaced

  690. with love

  691. which spills

  692. out into

  693. all your

  694. relationships

  695. starting with

  696. your family

  697. starting with

  698. your children

  699. and then

  700. from there

  701. on.

  702. Zachariah

  703. your son is

  704. going to

  705. turn the

  706. hearts of

  707. the disobedient

  708. to the

  709. wisdom of

  710. the righteous.

  711. In other

  712. words people

  713. who are

  714. flat out

  715. living in

  716. disobedience

  717. to God

  718. today Zachariah

  719. your son

  720. is going

  721. to have

  722. a role

  723. in them

  724. understanding

  725. and seeing

  726. the wisdom

  727. of the

  728. righteous

  729. and turning

  730. their hearts

  731. to God.

  732. Zachariah

  733. your son

  734. is going

  735. to prepare

  736. a people

  737. for the

  738. Lord.

  739. Wow.

  740. What might

  741. Zachariah be

  742. feeling in

  743. this moment?

  744. Can you

  745. imagine what

  746. thoughts might

  747. be going

  748. through his

  749. mind?

  750. It's an

  751. incredible

  752. moment.

  753. An angel

  754. of God

  755. appears to

  756. an elderly

  757. man with

  758. almost

  759. unbelievable

  760. good news

  761. not just

  762. of answer

  763. to his

  764. old prayer

  765. but of

  766. widespread

  767. spiritual

  768. reform

  769. and renewal

  770. for the

  771. nation.

  772. How does

  773. Zachariah

  774. respond?

  775. Zachariah

  776. asked the

  777. angel

  778. how can I

  779. be sure

  780. of this?

  781. I'm an

  782. old man

  783. and my

  784. wife is

  785. well along

  786. in years.

  787. the angel

  788. said to

  789. him

  790. I

  791. am

  792. Gabriel

  793. I

  794. stand

  795. in the

  796. presence

  797. of

  798. God

  799. and I

  800. have

  801. been

  802. sent

  803. to

  804. speak

  805. to

  806. you

  807. and to

  808. tell

  809. you

  810. this

  811. good

  812. news

  813. and now

  814. you will

  815. be silent

  816. and not

  817. able to

  818. speak

  819. until the

  820. day this

  821. happens

  822. because you

  823. did not

  824. believe

  825. my words

  826. which will

  827. come true

  828. at their

  829. appointed

  830. time.

  831. How does

  832. Zachariah

  833. respond to

  834. all this?

  835. With

  836. wonder

  837. pride

  838. excitement

  839. joy

  840. well no

  841. the angel

  842. tells us

  843. because you

  844. did not

  845. believe

  846. my words

  847. you did

  848. not believe

  849. my words

  850. says the

  851. angel

  852. that was

  853. Zachariah's

  854. response

  855. he did

  856. not believe

  857. the angel's

  858. words

  859. he was

  860. skeptical

  861. he was

  862. full of

  863. doubt

  864. in this

  865. moment

  866. when he

  867. says how

  868. can I

  869. be sure

  870. of this

  871. I'm an

  872. old man

  873. and my

  874. wife is

  875. well along

  876. in years

  877. there's

  878. this kind

  879. of profound

  880. and deep

  881. seated

  882. unbelief

  883. in his

  884. heart

  885. like you're

  886. telling me

  887. that me

  888. and my

  889. wife are

  890. going to

  891. be parents

  892. in our

  893. old age

  894. look at

  895. us

  896. that's

  897. ridiculous

  898. that's

  899. impossible

  900. that's

  901. absurd

  902. and the

  903. angel

  904. responds

  905. by saying

  906. make no

  907. mistake

  908. I am

  909. Gabriel

  910. what do

  911. I do

  912. as an

  913. angel

  914. I stand

  915. in the

  916. very presence

  917. of God

  918. almighty

  919. and he

  920. has sent

  921. me to

  922. you to

  923. tell you

  924. this good

  925. news

  926. and it

  927. will happen

  928. exactly as

  929. I have

  930. said

  931. even though

  932. you have

  933. not believed

  934. it

  935. and there's

  936. this sort

  937. of disciplinary

  938. consequence

  939. that's put

  940. on

  941. Zachariah

  942. because you

  943. did not

  944. believe my

  945. words

  946. you will

  947. be silent

  948. and unable

  949. to speak

  950. until the

  951. day this

  952. happens

  953. meanwhile

  954. the people

  955. were waiting

  956. for Zachariah

  957. that is

  958. those

  959. worshipping

  960. outside

  961. and praying

  962. outside the

  963. temple

  964. they were

  965. wondering

  966. why he

  967. stayed so

  968. long in

  969. the temple

  970. when he

  971. came out

  972. he could

  973. not speak

  974. to them

  975. they realized

  976. he had

  977. seen a

  978. vision in

  979. the temple

  980. for he

  981. kept making

  982. signs to

  983. them

  984. but remained

  985. unable to

  986. speak

  987. so can you

  988. imagine this

  989. like he's

  990. coming out

  991. and what on

  992. earth has

  993. happened to

  994. Zachariah

  995. he looks

  996. like he's

  997. playing charades

  998. he's acting

  999. something out

  1000. they probably

  1001. speculated

  1002. and guessed

  1003. and eventually

  1004. at just

  1005. this moment

  1006. what did

  1007. you have a

  1008. vision from

  1009. God

  1010. yeah

  1011. when his

  1012. time of

  1013. service was

  1014. completed

  1015. Zachariah

  1016. returned home

  1017. after this

  1018. his wife

  1019. Elizabeth

  1020. became

  1021. pregnant

  1022. and for

  1023. five months

  1024. remained

  1025. in seclusion

  1026. the Lord

  1027. has done

  1028. this for

  1029. me

  1030. she said

  1031. in these

  1032. days

  1033. he has

  1034. shown his

  1035. favor

  1036. and taken

  1037. away my

  1038. disgrace

  1039. among the

  1040. people

  1041. not having

  1042. children in

  1043. those days

  1044. it was

  1045. considered a

  1046. disgrace

  1047. being a

  1048. woman who

  1049. can't bear

  1050. a child

  1051. was like

  1052. being a

  1053. man with

  1054. no legs

  1055. back then

  1056. unable to

  1057. work

  1058. unable to

  1059. provide

  1060. for the

  1061. family

  1062. and people

  1063. were cruel

  1064. they

  1065. probably

  1066. speculated

  1067. and gossiped

  1068. about the

  1069. reason that

  1070. she couldn't

  1071. have kids

  1072. but no

  1073. more

  1074. and Elizabeth

  1075. gives all the

  1076. credit for her

  1077. pregnancy to

  1078. God

  1079. she knows

  1080. that this is

  1081. his doing

  1082. a miraculous

  1083. conception

  1084. and this

  1085. according to

  1086. Luke is

  1087. where the

  1088. story of

  1089. Jesus began

  1090. this was

  1091. the first

  1092. sign in

  1093. a series

  1094. of many

  1095. an awesome

  1096. angelic

  1097. encounter

  1098. and a

  1099. miraculous

  1100. conception

  1101. for an

  1102. elderly

  1103. God-fearing

  1104. couple

  1105. which came

  1106. as a total

  1107. surprise to

  1108. them and

  1109. to all

  1110. the new

  1111. around them

  1112. God

  1113. finally

  1114. broke

  1115. that 400

  1116. year silence

  1117. with the

  1118. word of

  1119. his angel

  1120. there is

  1121. coming

  1122. another

  1123. prophet

  1124. a great

  1125. one

  1126. he's going

  1127. to prepare

  1128. the hearts

  1129. of the

  1130. people

  1131. people are

  1132. going to

  1133. turn back

  1134. to the

  1135. Lord

  1136. many of

  1137. them as

  1138. a result

  1139. and he

  1140. will be

  1141. your son

  1142. Zachariah

  1143. but what

  1144. should our

  1145. response to

  1146. all this

  1147. be today

  1148. I think

  1149. Zachariah

  1150. shows us

  1151. what our

  1152. response to

  1153. all this

  1154. should be

  1155. or rather

  1156. what our

  1157. response should

  1158. not be

  1159. that's

  1160. my son

  1161. do you

  1162. believe the

  1163. words that

  1164. Gabriel spoke

  1165. to Zachariah

  1166. over 2,000

  1167. years ago

  1168. or

  1169. are you

  1170. like

  1171. Zachariah

  1172. a doubt

  1173. filled

  1174. skeptic

  1175. who looks

  1176. at this

  1177. story

  1178. and says

  1179. that's

  1180. impossible

  1181. there's a

  1182. sort of

  1183. irony here

  1184. isn't

  1185. there

  1186. God

  1187. acts in

  1188. a

  1189. supernatural

  1190. spectacular

  1191. way

  1192. to announce

  1193. good news

  1194. a message

  1195. of great

  1196. hope

  1197. all the

  1198. longings

  1199. that

  1200. you've

  1201. had

  1202. they're

  1203. about

  1204. to

  1205. be

  1206. fulfilled

  1207. and the

  1208. man he

  1209. chooses to

  1210. announce it

  1211. to

  1212. responds in

  1213. actual

  1214. disbelief

  1215. he doesn't

  1216. believe the

  1217. words of

  1218. God

  1219. he was a

  1220. righteous

  1221. God-fearing

  1222. man

  1223. yes

  1224. but the

  1225. first thing

  1226. we see

  1227. out of

  1228. him

  1229. when God

  1230. speaks to

  1231. him

  1232. is a

  1233. flat-out

  1234. disbelief

  1235. of God's

  1236. words

  1237. I think

  1238. this is

  1239. one of

  1240. those

  1241. unique

  1242. evidences

  1243. that this

  1244. is really

  1245. a true

  1246. account

  1247. I mean

  1248. this would

  1249. be

  1250. embarrassing

  1251. for

  1252. Zachariah

  1253. humiliating

  1254. and everybody

  1255. else knows

  1256. about it

  1257. because

  1258. well he

  1259. couldn't

  1260. talk

  1261. for nine

  1262. months

  1263. why would

  1264. God take

  1265. away your

  1266. ability to

  1267. speak

  1268. Zachariah

  1269. well because

  1270. when I first

  1271. heard the

  1272. news

  1273. I didn't

  1274. believe it

  1275. that was

  1276. Zachariah's

  1277. response to

  1278. God's

  1279. good news

  1280. back then

  1281. what's

  1282. your

  1283. response

  1284. to

  1285. God's

  1286. good

  1287. news

  1288. and the

  1289. rest

  1290. of it

  1291. today

  1292. do you

  1293. believe

  1294. God

  1295. do you

  1296. believe

  1297. that

  1298. John

  1299. was

  1300. miraculously

  1301. conceived

  1302. by the

  1303. power of

  1304. God

  1305. and that

  1306. he came

  1307. full of

  1308. God's

  1309. Holy Spirit

  1310. to prepare

  1311. us

  1312. for the

  1313. coming

  1314. of the

  1315. Lord

  1316. himself

  1317. the

  1318. Lord

  1319. Jesus

  1320. our

  1321. Savior

  1322. the

  1323. Messiah

  1324. and if

  1325. you don't

  1326. believe this

  1327. why not

  1328. let

  1329. Zachariah be a

  1330. lesson to us

  1331. all

  1332. don't think

  1333. that for a

  1334. moment if

  1335. God were to

  1336. send an

  1337. angel to

  1338. you to

  1339. appear to

  1340. you and

  1341. speak to

  1342. you that

  1343. then you

  1344. would believe

  1345. an

  1346. angelic

  1347. encounter

  1348. wasn't

  1349. enough

  1350. for

  1351. Zachariah

  1352. to

  1353. believe

  1354. God

  1355. said he

  1356. was going

  1357. to do

  1358. something

  1359. that seemed

  1360. utterly

  1361. impossible

  1362. to

  1363. Zachariah

  1364. and it

  1365. was there

  1366. that his

  1367. faith

  1368. wavered

  1369. real

  1370. faith in

  1371. God is

  1372. not so

  1373. much about

  1374. having that

  1375. special

  1376. experience

  1377. than about

  1378. simply trusting

  1379. and believing

  1380. in your

  1381. heart that

  1382. God can

  1383. do

  1384. what he

  1385. says

  1386. and I

  1387. love how

  1388. this story

  1389. continues

  1390. believe it

  1391. or not

  1392. Zachariah

  1393. you're

  1394. going to

  1395. see me

  1396. do

  1397. what I

  1398. have

  1399. said

  1400. I

  1401. will

  1402. do

  1403. I'll

  1404. bring

  1405. about

  1406. this

  1407. joy

  1408. and

  1409. delight

  1410. for

  1411. you

  1412. and

  1413. this

  1414. rejoicing

  1415. for

  1416. many

  1417. and

  1418. for

  1419. the

  1420. next

  1421. nine

  1422. months

  1423. you

  1424. won't

  1425. be

  1426. able

  1427. to

  1428. share

  1429. in

  1430. this

  1431. joy

  1432. in

  1433. the

  1434. same

  1435. way

  1436. because

  1437. you

  1438. did

  1439. not

  1440. believe

  1441. you

  1442. won't

  1443. be

  1444. able

  1445. to

  1446. speak

  1447. but

  1448. once

  1449. it

  1450. takes

  1451. place

  1452. I'll

  1453. give

  1454. you

  1455. your

  1456. speech

  1457. again

  1458. and

  1459. you

  1460. will

  1461. glorify

  1462. my

  1463. name

  1464. you

  1465. will

  1466. have

  1467. you

  1468. will

  1469. declare

  1470. my

  1471. goodness

  1472. and

  1473. so

  1474. I

  1475. think

  1476. there's

  1477. a

  1478. little

  1479. message

  1480. in

  1481. here

  1482. for

  1483. us

  1484. don't

  1485. be

  1486. like

  1487. Zachariah

  1488. God

  1489. can

  1490. really

  1491. do

  1492. the

  1493. impossible

  1494. he

  1495. really

  1496. did

  1497. do

  1498. the

  1499. impossible

  1500. in

  1501. this

  1502. situation

  1503. in

  1504. this

  1505. story

  1506. the

  1507. whole

  1508. account

  1509. of

  1510. Luke

  1511. is

  1512. the

  1513. story

  1514. of

  1515. impossible

  1516. after

  1517. impossible

  1518. happening

  1519. because

  1520. God

  1521. does

  1522. it

  1523. because

  1524. of

  1525. his

  1526. goodness

  1527. to

  1528. us

  1529. so

  1530. I

  1531. want

  1532. to

  1533. encourage

  1534. you

  1535. surrender

  1536. your

  1537. heart

  1538. to

  1539. that

  1540. simple

  1541. faith

  1542. the

  1543. Lord

  1544. can

  1545. do

  1546. what

  1547. he

  1548. says

  1549. he

  1550. will

  1551. do

  1552. as

  1553. both

  1554. Zachariah

  1555. and

  1556. his

  1557. wife

  1558. discovered

  1559. God

  1560. is

  1561. not

  1562. a

  1563. God

  1564. who

  1565. takes

  1566. pleasure

  1567. in

  1568. withholding

  1569. good

  1570. he

  1571. is

  1572. not

  1573. a

  1574. God

  1575. who

  1576. ignores

  1577. our

  1578. prayers

  1579. he

  1580. hears

  1581. all

  1582. of

  1583. them

  1584. and

  1585. he's

  1586. full

  1587. of

  1588. grace

  1589. and

  1590. favor

  1591. just

  1592. waiting

  1593. to

  1594. be

  1595. unleashed

  1596. despite

  1597. our

  1598. failings

  1599. towards

  1600. him

  1601. this

  1602. is

  1603. sign

  1604. number

  1605. one

  1606. in

  1607. the

  1608. gospel

  1609. of

  1610. Luke

  1611. where

  1612. God

  1613. finally

  1614. breaks

  1615. the

  1616. silence

  1617. do

  1618. you

  1619. believe

  1620. his

  1621. words

  1622. let's

  1623. pray

  1624. father

  1625. in

  1626. heaven

  1627. we

  1628. believe

  1629. that's

  1630. why we're

  1631. here this

  1632. morning

  1633. because we

  1634. believe

  1635. what an

  1636. awesome

  1637. thing

  1638. you

  1639. did

  1640. we love

  1641. this story

  1642. pray that

  1643. you would

  1644. fill us

  1645. with

  1646. joy

  1647. too

  1648. just

  1649. like

  1650. they

  1651. had

  1652. just

  1653. remembering

  1654. again

  1655. that

  1656. you

  1657. came

  1658. just

  1659. as

  1660. you

  1661. said

  1662. you

  1663. started

  1664. things

  1665. up

  1666. when it

  1667. seemed

  1668. like

  1669. everything

  1670. had

  1671. died

  1672. down

  1673. and I

  1674. pray

  1675. that

  1676. we

  1677. would

  1678. just

  1679. be

  1680. filled

  1681. with

  1682. that

  1683. joy

  1684. and

  1685. that

  1686. it

  1687. would

  1688. overflow

  1689. and

  1690. in

  1691. our

  1692. eagerness

  1693. to

  1694. share

  1695. this

  1696. good

  1697. news

  1698. with

  1699. people

  1700. around

  1701. us

  1702. especially

  1703. as we

  1704. head

  1705. towards

  1706. Christmas

  1707. Lord

  1708. that time

  1709. when we

  1710. remember

  1711. your

  1712. birth

  1713. may

  1714. this

  1715. news

  1716. be on

  1717. our

  1718. lips

  1719. the

  1720. signs

  1721. that

  1722. you

  1723. gave

  1724. the

  1725. angel

  1726. you

  1727. sent

  1728. and

  1729. we

  1730. know

  1731. that

  1732. not

  1733. everybody

  1734. will

  1735. respond

  1736. with

  1737. faith

  1738. and

  1739. belief

  1740. but

  1741. we

  1742. do

  1743. and

  1744. we

  1745. pray

  1746. that

  1747. some

  1748. will

  1749. for

  1750. your

  1751. name

  1752. amen
