  1. Alright, well we are continuing on with the Gospel of Luke this morning.

  2. You're welcome to turn there in your Bibles if you have them with you.

  3. We are still in Chapter 1. It's a long chapter.

  4. Last Sunday we heard about how Mary made the journey from Nazareth down to Judea

  5. to visit her relative Elizabeth.

  6. And we saw that sweet exchange between the two women.

  7. Before Mary could even share the news of what was happening with her,

  8. Elizabeth declared that she was pregnant, she was filled with the Holy Spirit,

  9. and she spoke about the blessed child in Mary's womb.

  10. And then we looked at Mary's psalm of praise to God.

  11. She was just so joyfully and deeply touched by what God was doing with her,

  12. giving this amazing gift to her, a young girl from Nazareth.

  13. And as we heard last Sunday,

  14. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months,

  15. and then returned home.

  16. And if we do our pregnancy math,

  17. we see that Mary came during the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy

  18. to visit Elizabeth,

  19. and then stayed about three months,

  20. and then returned home.

  21. So we don't know this for sure,

  22. but it's quite likely that she stayed with Elizabeth

  23. until just after what we're about to read today took place.

  24. So let's continue the story in Luke 1, verse 57.

    Luke 1:57

  25. When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby,

  26. she gave birth to a son.

  27. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy,

  28. and they shared her joy.

  29. On the eighth day,

  30. when they came to circumcise the child,

  31. and they were going to name him after his father, Zechariah.

  32. But his mother spoke up and said,

  33. No, he is to be called John.

  34. They said to her,

  35. There's no one among your relatives who has that name.

  36. Then they made signs to his father

  37. to find out what he would like to name the child.

  38. He asked for a writing tablet,

  39. and to everyone's astonishment,

  40. he wrote,

  41. His name is John.

  42. Immediately, his mouth was opened,

  43. and his tongue set free,

  44. and he began to speak,

  45. praising God.

  46. So just as the angel Gabriel had said to Zechariah in the temple,

  47. Elizabeth gave birth to their baby in her old age.

  48. And just as the angel said,

  49. it was a boy,

  50. a son.

  51. And Luke describes for us the impact that this had

  52. in Elizabeth's family and in her community.

  53. Verse 58,

  54. Her neighbors and relatives heard

  55. that the Lord had shown her great mercy,

  56. and they shared her joy.

  57. Virtually all of our English translations of this

  58. are a little flat.

  59. Quite literally, it says,

  60. Her neighbors and relatives heard

  61. that the Lord was magnifying his mercy with her,

  62. and they rejoiced with her.

  63. That original word order puts emphasis on that word magnify.

  64. Luke's point here is that Elizabeth's neighbors and relatives

  65. recognized that this birth of Elizabeth

  66. was a huge act of the Lord's mercy to her,

  67. of the Lord's kindness to Elizabeth.

  68. And they understood this

  69. because this child was a miracle baby.

  70. A child born to an elderly woman,

  71. as we talked about a few weeks ago.

  72. This pregnancy was a supernatural miracle of God's power.

  73. And everybody knew it.

  74. It was a very happy occasion.

  75. They rejoiced with her.

  76. We don't know exactly how old Elizabeth was at this time,

  77. but, you know,

  78. can you imagine going to the baby shower

  79. of a 70-year-old woman?

  80. Not only that,

  81. but a woman who had cried

  82. and prayed

  83. and tried

  84. again and again

  85. for decades

  86. only to be disappointed.

  87. And now,

  88. here she is

  89. with her son in her arms.

  90. This was a very joyful occasion.

  91. Eight days later,

  92. it was time to circumcise the child.

  93. This was something that they did

  94. to honor the covenant

  95. that God made with Abraham long ago.

  96. And by this time,

  97. it was customary,

  98. according to Jewish tradition,

  99. to name a son

  100. at the same time.

  101. Not only that,

  102. but it was actually tradition

  103. to have guests attend

  104. the circumcision

  105. as witnesses

  106. and to celebrate

  107. the birth of the son

  108. at that time.

  109. It's a little different

  110. from how we do things today,

  111. many people,

  112. but that's what's happening here.

  113. So it's kind of like

  114. a birthday party,

  115. kind of like

  116. a circumcision party.

  117. And you get the sense

  118. that the family is here

  119. and they're just sort of assuming

  120. already at this point

  121. that the name of this child

  122. is going to be

  123. Zachariah

  124. after his father.

  125. Luke says,

  126. yeah,

  127. they were going to name him

  128. after his father.

  129. You know,

  130. there's sometimes these moments

  131. that happen within

  132. the extended family.

  133. We see things like this

  134. at weddings

  135. where sometimes

  136. family members

  137. are so eager

  138. and ready to make decisions

  139. about how the wedding

  140. should go

  141. without even asking

  142. the couple themselves,

  143. what do you guys want?

  144. How do you want it to go?

  145. Tradition can be

  146. a really powerful thing.

  147. And it was tradition

  148. to name a child

  149. after some relative.

  150. We don't know exactly

  151. what they were thinking,

  152. but maybe they were thinking,

  153. you know,

  154. who better than Zachariah?

  155. I mean,

  156. he has fathered

  157. this miracle baby.

  158. The child ought to be

  159. named after him.

  160. Whatever the case,

  161. you can almost imagine

  162. the awkwardness

  163. of that moment

  164. when Elizabeth

  165. finally pipes up

  166. and says,

  167. no,

  168. he's to be called

  169. John.

  170. Can you imagine

  171. the look on their faces?

  172. John.

  173. There's nobody

  174. among your relatives

  175. that has that name.

  176. And you know,

  177. being Canadians

  178. and being polite,

  179. that's our reputation.

  180. We kind of expect

  181. that that's going to be

  182. the end of the discussion.

  183. After all,

  184. Elizabeth is the boy's mother.

  185. If she says John,

  186. then I guess it's going

  187. to be John, right?

  188. But it almost seems

  189. as if the extended family

  190. wasn't willing

  191. to give up

  192. so easily yet.

  193. Let's ask his dad.

  194. And surely Zachariah

  195. will be pleased

  196. to have the boy

  197. named after him.

  198. So they started

  199. making signs

  200. to his father,

  201. to Zachariah,

  202. to find out

  203. what he would like

  204. to name the child.

  205. If you remember

  206. from earlier on

  207. in Luke's account,

  208. nine months earlier,

  209. Zachariah was told

  210. by Gabriel

  211. at the temple

  212. that he would father

  213. a son with his wife,

  214. Elizabeth.

  215. And because Zachariah

  216. did not believe

  217. the angel's words,

  218. God gave him

  219. this disciplinary consequence

  220. of not being able

  221. to speak

  222. until the day

  223. this happens.

  224. And so that's why

  225. they're making signs

  226. to Zachariah

  227. to communicate with him

  228. because he's been mute

  229. for the past nine months

  230. and unable to speak.

  231. Zachariah asks

  232. for a writing tablet

  233. and writes on it,

  234. his name is John.

  235. And they,

  236. the guests and family,

  237. are all astonished.

  238. Evidently,

  239. it was quite the tradition

  240. to name the child

  241. after some relative

  242. in the family

  243. or maybe up to this point

  244. the family had just

  245. hyped it up so much

  246. that this is,

  247. we gotta call him Zachariah.

  248. But this had them

  249. all surprised

  250. and shocked.

  251. Now again,

  252. if we think back

  253. to what Gabriel said

  254. to Zachariah

  255. nine months before this,

  256. back in Luke chapter one,

  257. verse 13,

  258. your wife Elizabeth

  259. will bear you a son

  260. and you are to call him

  261. John,

  262. said the angel.

  263. So this is

  264. the name that God himself

  265. picked out for this child.

  266. And this is Zachariah's moment

  267. to express obedient faith

  268. after his initial disbelief.

  269. Naming this child, John,

  270. against tradition,

  271. against the consensus

  272. of the family

  273. is a very clear

  274. and obvious way

  275. for Zachariah

  276. to say with his actions,

  277. I believe,

  278. I now believe

  279. what the Lord said

  280. to me nine months ago

  281. about who this child

  282. will be.

  283. His name

  284. is John.

  285. Immediately,

  286. his mouth was opened

  287. and his tongue set free

  288. and he began to speak

  289. praising God.

  290. Again,

  291. what the angel said

  292. would happen

  293. nine months earlier

  294. just happened.

  295. He was unable to speak

  296. until it happened,

  297. until all this happened,

  298. which seems included

  299. naming John

  300. and then all of a sudden

  301. God miraculously

  302. in that moment

  303. just restores

  304. Zachariah's voice

  305. and the first thing

  306. Zachariah does with it

  307. is he begins to speak

  308. praising God,

  309. blessing God.

  310. At this point,

  311. Luke zooms out

  312. a little bit

  313. and tells us

  314. about the reaction,

  315. not only of those

  316. at the party

  317. but also of those

  318. in the community.

  319. Verse 65,

  320. all the neighbors

  321. were filled with awe

  322. and throughout

  323. the hill country

  324. of Judea,

  325. people were talking

  326. about all these things.

  327. Everyone who heard this

  328. wondered about it,

  329. asking,

  330. what then

  331. is this child

  332. going to be?

  333. For the Lord's hand

  334. was with him.

  335. So the happenings

  336. of this little party

  337. caused quite the stir

  338. in the neighboring towns

  339. and hill country.

  340. Luke says that people

  341. were talking about

  342. all these things

  343. and that word for talking

  344. is the kind of talking

  345. that often includes

  346. a back and forth

  347. like discussion

  348. and dialogue,

  349. exchanging their opinions

  350. and viewpoints

  351. as one commentary

  352. puts it.

  353. Everyone who heard

  354. about this

  355. wondered about it,

  356. says Luke.

  357. Quite literally,

  358. they laid it upon

  359. their hearts

  360. saying,

  361. what then

  362. is this child

  363. going to be?

  364. for the Lord's hand

  365. was with him.

  366. There was a question

  367. forming deep down

  368. inside of people

  369. after hearing this.

  370. What then

  371. is this child

  372. going to be?

  373. For the Lord's hand

  374. was with him.

  375. Most scholars

  376. attribute this

  377. to Luke himself,

  378. the author,

  379. stating this.

  380. seems to be

  381. the answer

  382. that people

  383. were coming to

  384. as they were

  385. asking this question.

  386. Those who heard

  387. the news

  388. of baby John's birth,

  389. they were concluding

  390. that the Lord's hand

  391. was with this child.

  392. They thought

  393. God must be doing

  394. something special

  395. with him.

  396. How else

  397. could Elizabeth

  398. have a baby

  399. in her old age?

  400. I mean,

  401. they knew about

  402. menopause back then.

  403. It's a miracle baby.

  404. And then they heard

  405. about this strange sign

  406. with Zachariah,

  407. how he lost his speech

  408. for nine months

  409. and then just the other day

  410. he got his speech back

  411. and he was praising God.

  412. God must be at work

  413. and it seems here

  414. Luke is saying,

  415. yes,

  416. the Lord's hand

  417. was indeed

  418. with John,

  419. just as they were

  420. suspecting.

  421. Well,

  422. Luke now

  423. goes on

  424. to share with us

  425. what Zachariah said

  426. in verses

  427. 67 to 69.

  428. We read in verse 67,

  429. his father Zachariah

  430. was filled

  431. with the Holy Spirit

  432. and prophesied.

  433. Similar to Mary's

  434. psalm

  435. that we looked at

  436. last Sunday,

  437. Zachariah now

  438. utters

  439. a poetic

  440. prophecy.

  441. And just like

  442. with Mary's utterance

  443. which we looked at

  444. last week,

  445. tradition has it

  446. that this was

  447. kind of like a hymn

  448. or a song

  449. and again,

  450. same as we looked at

  451. last Sunday

  452. with Mary's,

  453. there's nothing here

  454. in the text

  455. that indicated

  456. that Zachariah

  457. sang this.

  458. In fact,

  459. the word for speaking

  460. or saying

  461. is present.

  462. But Luke

  463. does make it clear,

  464. explicitly clear

  465. that Zachariah

  466. spoke these words

  467. under the influence

  468. of God's Spirit.

  469. He was filled

  470. with the Holy Spirit

  471. and then prophesied.

  472. He spoke these words.

  473. Again,

  474. just as with Mary's utterance,

  475. there could be

  476. this question of,

  477. you know,

  478. did Zachariah say this

  479. like right there

  480. at the party

  481. or was it

  482. sometime after?

  483. And personally,

  484. I've always tended

  485. to see this

  486. as what Zachariah

  487. spoke in that moment

  488. as his tongue

  489. was set free

  490. and his lips

  491. were opened

  492. right there

  493. at the party

  494. but that maybe

  495. Luke decided

  496. to just,

  497. you know,

  498. it's a long thing.

  499. Let's not break up

  500. the flow of the narrative.

  501. Let's just put it after

  502. rather than break up

  503. the story.

  504. One more interesting

  505. observation

  506. to just notice

  507. about Zachariah's words

  508. here at the outset.

  509. Even though Zachariah

  510. says this

  511. under the influence

  512. of God's Spirit,

  513. that doesn't mean

  514. that these words

  515. are not

  516. Zachariah's words.

  517. It's not as if

  518. God's Spirit

  519. just kind of

  520. takes over

  521. Zachariah's body

  522. and mouth

  523. such that it's

  524. no longer

  525. Zachariah

  526. thinking

  527. and speaking

  528. out of his own heart

  529. in these moments.

  530. Look at verse 76.

  531. Zachariah says there,

  532. and you,

  533. my child,

  534. will be called

  535. a prophet

  536. of the Most High.

  537. This is very

  538. personal language.

  539. I mean,

  540. he's addressing

  541. his son John here.

  542. I always imagine

  543. him actually

  544. holding the baby

  545. in his arm

  546. as he says it.

  547. I don't know

  548. if that's

  549. what happened

  550. or not.

  551. So we notice

  552. here that

  553. prophetic words,

  554. words uttered

  555. by the Spirit,

  556. need not override

  557. the mind and heart

  558. of the prophets

  559. speaking them.

  560. Let's look now

  561. at what Zachariah

  562. said.

  563. starting in verse 68.

  564. Praise be to the Lord,

  565. the God of Israel,

  566. because he has come

  567. to his people

  568. and redeemed them.

  569. He has raised up

  570. a horn of salvation

  571. for us

  572. in the house

  573. of his servant,

  574. David,

  575. as he said

  576. through his holy prophets

  577. of long ago.

  578. Salvation

  579. from our enemies

  580. and from the hand

  581. of all who hate us

  582. to show mercy

  583. to our ancestors

  584. and to remember

  585. his holy covenant,

  586. the oath he swore

  587. to our father,

  588. Abraham,

  589. to rescue us

  590. from the hand

  591. of our enemies

  592. and to enable us

  593. to serve him

  594. without fear

  595. in holiness

  596. and righteousness

  597. before him

  598. all our days.

  599. and you,

  600. my child,

  601. will be called

  602. a prophet

  603. of the Most High

  604. for you will go on

  605. before the Lord

  606. to prepare the way

  607. for him

  608. to give his people

  609. the knowledge

  610. of salvation

  611. through the forgiveness

  612. of their sins

  613. because of the tender

  614. mercy

  615. of our God

  616. by which the rising

  617. sun

  618. will come to us

  619. from heaven

  620. to shine

  621. on those living

  622. in darkness

  623. and in the shadow

  624. of death

  625. to guide our feet

  626. into the path

  627. of peace.

  628. Zachariah's

  629. outburst of praise

  630. begins with

  631. the word

  632. praise.

  633. Praise be

  634. or blessed be

  635. the Lord,

  636. the God of Israel.

  637. And then the whole

  638. rest of this

  639. is just

  640. one continuous flow

  641. of reason

  642. after reason

  643. after reason

  644. why the Lord

  645. is worthy

  646. of praise

  647. and blessing

  648. and honor.

  649. Reason number one

  650. praise be

  651. to the Lord

  652. the God of Israel.

  653. Why?

  654. Because he has

  655. come

  656. to his people.

  657. Now it's unclear

  658. at this point

  659. just how much

  660. Zachariah understood

  661. as he said this.

  662. I mean is he thinking

  663. you know

  664. God is drawing near

  665. he's coming

  666. he's visiting us

  667. with his aid

  668. his help

  669. in these

  670. tumultuous days.

  671. I think that

  672. by the spirit

  673. though he spoke

  674. better than he knew

  675. for in fact

  676. as the story

  677. goes on

  678. we're soon

  679. going to discover

  680. that the Lord

  681. God of Israel

  682. himself

  683. is in

  684. the womb

  685. of Mary.

  686. He has taken

  687. on human flesh

  688. and has come

  689. to dwell

  690. among us.

  691. The God of Israel

  692. has come

  693. to his people.

  694. reason number

  695. two

  696. to praise

  697. blessed be

  698. the Lord

  699. God of Israel

  700. because he has

  701. come to his people

  702. and redeemed

  703. them.

  704. He's come

  705. to set us

  706. free.

  707. He's come

  708. to buy us

  709. back to himself

  710. and again

  711. did Zachariah

  712. have any idea

  713. of just what

  714. this would entail?

  715. What the price

  716. of redemption

  717. would be?

  718. what kind

  719. of setting

  720. free

  721. is Zachariah

  722. thinking about

  723. here?

  724. We might get

  725. a sense

  726. in a moment.

  727. Reason number

  728. three

  729. praise be

  730. to the Lord

  731. the God

  732. of Israel

  733. because

  734. he has

  735. raised up

  736. a horn

  737. of salvation

  738. for us

  739. in the house

  740. of his servant

  741. David.

  742. The horn

  743. of an animal

  744. symbolized

  745. the strength

  746. or power

  747. of an animal.

  748. And this

  749. language of horn

  750. was used

  751. in the Old

  752. Testament

  753. often metaphorically

  754. to refer to

  755. the powerful

  756. king

  757. of a kingdom.

  758. And so

  759. what is

  760. Zachariah

  761. saying here?

  762. He's saying

  763. that God

  764. has raised

  765. up a strong

  766. king

  767. for us

  768. in the house

  769. of his servant

  770. David.

  771. and the

  772. lineage

  773. of David

  774. is significant

  775. because of

  776. the promises

  777. that were

  778. made to

  779. David

  780. a thousand

  781. years earlier

  782. that a

  783. son of his

  784. would reign

  785. on his

  786. throne.

  787. Zachariah is

  788. referring to

  789. the Messiah.

  790. God has

  791. raised up

  792. for us

  793. that great

  794. son of David

  795. whom we've

  796. been waiting

  797. for.

  798. The Messiah

  799. to be

  800. our king.

  801. reason number

  802. four.

  803. Praise be

  804. to the

  805. Lord God

  806. of Israel

  807. because he

  808. has done

  809. all this

  810. as he

  811. said

  812. through his

  813. holy prophets

  814. of long

  815. ago.

  816. He is a

  817. God who

  818. keeps his

  819. word.

  820. The

  821. fulfillment

  822. was a long

  823. time in the

  824. coming,

  825. a long

  826. time in the

  827. waiting,

  828. but what he

  829. said he

  830. would do

  831. he has

  832. now done.

  833. He is a

  834. faithful God

  835. and so

  836. praise be

  837. to his

  838. name.

  839. Reason

  840. number

  841. five.

  842. Praise be

  843. to the

  844. Lord,

  845. the God

  846. of Israel

  847. because he

  848. has raised

  849. up a

  850. horn of

  851. salvation

  852. for us.

  853. So he

  854. will be a

  855. powerful king

  856. who will

  857. bring about

  858. our salvation

  859. and what's

  860. perhaps a

  861. little surprising

  862. and unexpected

  863. to us

  864. here is what

  865. kind of

  866. salvation

  867. Zachariah

  868. has in

  869. mind.

  870. We

  871. expect

  872. verse 71

  873. to

  874. explain

  875. this

  876. salvation

  877. first and

  878. foremost

  879. as salvation

  880. from our

  881. sins,

  882. salvation

  883. from our

  884. guilt,

  885. but

  886. Zachariah is

  887. not thinking

  888. about that.

  889. Not yet,

  890. anyway.

  891. salvation

  892. verse 71

  893. from our

  894. enemies

  895. and

  896. from the

  897. hand

  898. of all

  899. who hate

  900. us.

  901. Salvation

  902. from our

  903. enemies

  904. and from

  905. the hand

  906. of all

  907. who hate

  908. us.

  909. Whenever

  910. God says

  911. something other

  912. than what we

  913. might expect,

  914. we ought to

  915. slow down.

  916. we ought to

  917. really think

  918. about why.

  919. As I said

  920. last week,

  921. we need to

  922. remember that

  923. the idea of

  924. God as our

  925. Savior is

  926. much bigger

  927. than just

  928. salvation from

  929. sins.

  930. I mean,

  931. salvation from

  932. sins is

  933. amazing,

  934. it's huge,

  935. it's wonderful,

  936. it's true,

  937. but God as

  938. our Savior is

  939. even more than

  940. that.

  941. there's a

  942. whole history

  943. of the

  944. people of

  945. God over

  946. millennia leading

  947. up to this

  948. where God's

  949. people,

  950. Abraham,

  951. Isaac,

  952. Israel,

  953. the children

  954. of Israel

  955. learned that

  956. God was

  957. their

  958. deliverer,

  959. God was

  960. their Savior

  961. in countless

  962. different ways

  963. and salvation

  964. or deliverance

  965. from enemies

  966. was a big

  967. way,

  968. one of the

  969. biggest ways.

  970. think about

  971. what God

  972. did through

  973. the great

  974. king David

  975. for his

  976. people.

  977. He raised

  978. David up

  979. and through

  980. David gave

  981. his people

  982. victory over

  983. all their

  984. enemies,

  985. all around

  986. them,

  987. and they

  988. were bitter

  989. and ruthless

  990. enemies with

  991. whom there

  992. was generations

  993. of conflict

  994. and war.

  995. those were

  996. tough years.

  997. It was

  998. under David

  999. that for the

  1000. first time

  1001. in centuries

  1002. Israel was

  1003. saved from

  1004. all her

  1005. enemies.

  1006. And now

  1007. the greater

  1008. son of

  1009. David,

  1010. the Messiah,

  1011. is here.

  1012. And so

  1013. what are the

  1014. expectations of

  1015. the faithful?

  1016. No less.

  1017. And make

  1018. no mistake

  1019. here,

  1020. we might be

  1021. tempted to

  1022. think that

  1023. Zechariah is

  1024. mistaking the

  1025. kind of salvation

  1026. that the

  1027. Messiah has

  1028. come to

  1029. bring.

  1030. We might be

  1031. tempted to

  1032. think that

  1033. Zechariah is

  1034. just expecting

  1035. this child of

  1036. Mary's to be

  1037. the one who

  1038. liberates them

  1039. from Roman

  1040. rule.

  1041. Because that's

  1042. what a lot of

  1043. people in

  1044. Israel at

  1045. that time

  1046. were longing

  1047. for and

  1048. hoping for.

  1049. But I would

  1050. suggest to you

  1051. that Zechariah

  1052. is not mistaken

  1053. or short-sighted

  1054. here.

  1055. I would suggest

  1056. to you that

  1057. Zechariah's

  1058. understanding of

  1059. what the

  1060. Messiah will

  1061. do for his

  1062. people,

  1063. bringing salvation

  1064. from our

  1065. enemies,

  1066. is precisely

  1067. what God

  1068. declared through

  1069. the prophets

  1070. centuries earlier.

  1071. We might be

  1072. tempted 2,000

  1073. years later to

  1074. look back on

  1075. this and say,

  1076. well, these

  1077. enemies must be

  1078. spiritual enemies.

  1079. like the

  1080. enemy of

  1081. sin or

  1082. the devil.

  1083. And certainly

  1084. Jesus is the

  1085. one who saves

  1086. us from both.

  1087. But I don't

  1088. think that's

  1089. what Zechariah

  1090. was meaning

  1091. as he said

  1092. this.

  1093. God himself,

  1094. through the

  1095. prophets of

  1096. old, taught

  1097. his people to

  1098. expect a

  1099. savior who

  1100. would deliver

  1101. them from

  1102. their enemies,

  1103. their flesh

  1104. and blood

  1105. enemies.

  1106. And there

  1107. are many

  1108. passages that

  1109. we could look

  1110. back to in

  1111. the Old

  1112. Testament.

  1113. For time's

  1114. sake this

  1115. morning, we're

  1116. just going to

  1117. look at one,

  1118. a familiar

  1119. one.

  1120. Micah 5,

    Micah 5:2

  1121. verse 2.

  1122. This is God

  1123. speaking through

  1124. Micah 700

  1125. years before

  1126. Jesus was

  1127. born.

  1128. But you,

  1129. Bethlehem

  1130. Ephrathah,

  1131. though you are

  1132. small among the

  1133. clans of Judah,

  1134. out of you will

  1135. come for me one

  1136. who will be ruler

  1137. over Israel,

  1138. whose origins are

  1139. from of old,

  1140. from ancient

  1141. times.

  1142. Therefore,

  1143. Israel will be

  1144. abandoned until

  1145. the time when

  1146. she who is in

  1147. labor bears a

  1148. son, and the

  1149. rest of his

  1150. brothers return

  1151. to join the

  1152. Israelites.

  1153. He will stand

  1154. and shepherd his

  1155. flock in the

  1156. strength of the

  1157. Lord, in the

  1158. majesty of the

  1159. name of the

  1160. Lord, his God.

  1161. God, and

  1162. they will live

  1163. securely, for

  1164. then his

  1165. greatness will

  1166. reach to the

  1167. ends of the

  1168. earth.

  1169. It goes on.

  1170. And he will

  1171. be our peace

  1172. when the

  1173. Assyrians invade

  1174. our land and

  1175. march through our

  1176. fortresses.

  1177. We will raise

  1178. against them

  1179. seven shepherds,

  1180. even eight

  1181. commanders, who

  1182. will rule the

  1183. land of Assyria

  1184. with the sword,

  1185. the land of

  1186. Nimrod with

  1187. drawn sword.

  1188. He will

  1189. deliver us from

  1190. the Assyrians

  1191. when they invade

  1192. our land and

  1193. march across our

  1194. borders.

  1195. This is one of

  1196. those interesting

  1197. passages in the

  1198. Old Testament

  1199. where we're left

  1200. wondering, is he

  1201. talking about the

  1202. near future, or

  1203. is he talking about

  1204. the distant future?

  1205. I mean, the

  1206. Assyrian Empire,

  1207. that's way before

  1208. Jesus came.

  1209. it reached its

  1210. pinnacle around

  1211. the time of the

  1212. prophet Micah.

  1213. The Assyrians

  1214. came and they

  1215. conquered the

  1216. northern kingdom

  1217. of Israel.

  1218. They invaded the

  1219. land.

  1220. They marched

  1221. through their

  1222. fortresses way

  1223. back then in the

  1224. days of Micah

  1225. and King

  1226. Hezekiah.

  1227. Israel.

  1228. But this prophecy

  1229. speaks of one

  1230. who will be

  1231. born in

  1232. Bethlehem, a

  1233. ruler whose

  1234. greatness will

  1235. reach to the

  1236. ends of the

  1237. earth.

  1238. death.

  1239. That wasn't back

  1240. then.

  1241. One who will

  1242. cause his

  1243. people to live

  1244. securely.

  1245. This prophecy

  1246. speaks of how

  1247. this ruler will

  1248. come later,

  1249. after the

  1250. abandonment of

  1251. Israel, not

  1252. immediately.

  1253. this prophecy

  1254. speaks of how

  1255. this ruler will

  1256. deliver his

  1257. people from

  1258. the Assyrian

  1259. who invades

  1260. so successfully

  1261. that the

  1262. shepherds and

  1263. commanders of

  1264. Israel will

  1265. rule or will

  1266. crush the land

  1267. of Assyria with

  1268. the sword.

  1269. Well, that

  1270. certainly didn't

  1271. happen back in

  1272. those days of

  1273. Hezekiah.

  1274. It seems to

  1275. point to a

  1276. distant future

  1277. ruler or

  1278. king who will

  1279. save and

  1280. deliver the

  1281. people of

  1282. Israel from

  1283. those who

  1284. invade and

  1285. bring lasting

  1286. security and

  1287. peace and

  1288. even dominion

  1289. over the

  1290. Assyrians.

  1291. Do you see

  1292. how God was

  1293. calling his

  1294. people to

  1295. hope in the

  1296. ruler who

  1297. would later be

  1298. born in

  1299. Bethlehem,

  1300. 700 years

  1301. later,

  1302. he was

  1303. calling his

  1304. people to

  1305. hope in

  1306. him for

  1307. deliverance

  1308. from their

  1309. flesh and

  1310. blood enemies.

  1311. People,

  1312. men like

  1313. the Assyrians.

  1314. And then

  1315. after the

  1316. Assyrians

  1317. came the

  1318. Babylonians.

  1319. And then

  1320. after them

  1321. came the

  1322. Medes and

  1323. the Persians.

  1324. And then

  1325. came the

  1326. Greek kings

  1327. and centuries

  1328. of bloodshed

  1329. and battle

  1330. fought between

  1331. the fractured

  1332. provinces of

  1333. the Greek

  1334. empire with

  1335. Israel caught

  1336. right in the

  1337. middle.

  1338. And then

  1339. came the

  1340. Romans.

  1341. And though

  1342. we may not

  1343. understand just

  1344. how everything

  1345. will conclude at

  1346. the end of our

  1347. world story,

  1348. it would seem

  1349. that the word

  1350. of God points

  1351. to future

  1352. times of

  1353. trouble for

  1354. the people

  1355. of God

  1356. and to a

  1357. physical

  1358. earthly reign

  1359. of Jesus

  1360. when he

  1361. returns.

  1362. an

  1363. establishment

  1364. of the

  1365. kingdom

  1366. of God,

  1367. the kingdom

  1368. of Israel

  1369. on the

  1370. earth.

  1371. And it

  1372. seems to

  1373. point even

  1374. to great

  1375. victories,

  1376. won in

  1377. battle against

  1378. all the

  1379. enemy opposing

  1380. nations

  1381. at that

  1382. time.

  1383. It would

  1384. seem to

  1385. point to a

  1386. Messiah who

  1387. will be the

  1388. great savior

  1389. and deliverer

  1390. of his

  1391. people in

  1392. that day

  1393. at the

  1394. end,

  1395. both Jew

  1396. and Gentile.

  1397. My purpose

  1398. here is not

  1399. to suggest a

  1400. fully fleshed

  1401. out timeline

  1402. or order of

  1403. events at the

  1404. end, but to

  1405. establish that

  1406. Zechariah was

  1407. right to

  1408. praise God

  1409. for a son

  1410. of David who

  1411. would bring

  1412. salvation from

  1413. our enemies,

  1414. who would

  1415. bring salvation

  1416. from the

  1417. hand of all

  1418. who hate

  1419. us.

  1420. This is a

  1421. part of the

  1422. story of

  1423. Jesus that's

  1424. still coming

  1425. for all who

  1426. belong to

  1427. him.

  1428. Listen to

  1429. this expressed

  1430. in the New

  1431. Testament by

  1432. the Apostle

  1433. Paul in

  1434. his letter to

  1435. the Thessalonian

  1436. church,

  1437. 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  1438. chapter 1.

  1439. Therefore

  1440. among God's

  1441. churches we

  1442. boast about

  1443. your perseverance

  1444. and faith in

  1445. all the

  1446. persecutions and

  1447. trials you are

  1448. enduring.

  1449. there's the

  1450. enemies, there's

  1451. those who hate

  1452. us.

  1453. All this is

  1454. evidence that

  1455. God's judgment

  1456. is right and

  1457. as a result you

  1458. will be counted

  1459. worthy of the

  1460. kingdom of God

  1461. for which you

  1462. are suffering.

  1463. God is just.

  1464. He will pay

  1465. back trouble to

  1466. those who

  1467. trouble you and

  1468. give relief to

  1469. you who are

  1470. troubled.

  1471. There's the

  1472. rescuing, there's

  1473. salvation.

  1474. This will

  1475. happen when

  1476. the Lord Jesus

  1477. is revealed

  1478. from heaven

  1479. in blazing

  1480. fire with

  1481. his powerful

  1482. angels.

  1483. Salvation from

  1484. all our

  1485. enemies and

  1486. all who hate

  1487. us.

  1488. This is so much

  1489. in the mind and

  1490. heart of

  1491. Zachariah.

  1492. He says it

  1493. twice again in

  1494. verse 74,

  1495. to rescue us

  1496. from the hand

  1497. of our enemies

  1498. and to enable

  1499. us to serve

  1500. him without

  1501. fear in

  1502. holiness and

  1503. righteousness

  1504. before him

  1505. all our days.

  1506. What does

  1507. Zachariah long

  1508. for?

  1509. The freedom

  1510. to worship

  1511. God and

  1512. live before

  1513. him and serve

  1514. him totally

  1515. unhindered.

  1516. Praise be to

  1517. God.

  1518. He's going to

  1519. bring that about

  1520. through this

  1521. horn of

  1522. salvation that

  1523. he is now

  1524. raising up in

  1525. these days.

  1526. He's referring

  1527. of course to

  1528. the child in

  1529. Mary's womb.

  1530. There's so much

  1531. in this Psalm of

  1532. Zachariah.

  1533. I'm not going to

  1534. get to all of

  1535. it.

  1536. I'm almost out of

  1537. time here.

  1538. But we notice

  1539. some of the

  1540. things that are

  1541. repeated, the

  1542. things that are

  1543. emphasized.

  1544. Verse 72,

  1545. to remember

  1546. his holy

  1547. covenant,

  1548. the oath he

  1549. swore to

  1550. our father

  1551. Abraham.

  1552. Praise be to

  1553. the Lord God

  1554. of Israel for

  1555. he is faithful.

  1556. He promised

  1557. long ago and

  1558. now he's

  1559. keeping his

  1560. promises through

  1561. this Savior that

  1562. he is raising

  1563. up.

  1564. And just like

  1565. with Mary in

  1566. her psalm, we

  1567. see it here in

  1568. Zachariah's too.

  1569. Zachariah recognizes

  1570. that this child,

  1571. this king, will be

  1572. the one through

  1573. whom the promises

  1574. made to Abraham

  1575. long ago, will

  1576. be fulfilled.

  1577. That covenant

  1578. that God made

  1579. with Abraham

  1580. long ago wasn't

  1581. just an Old

  1582. Testament thing.

  1583. It wasn't just

  1584. part of a bygone

  1585. dispensation.

  1586. This is something

  1587. that God is making

  1588. good on right

  1589. now with the

  1590. birth of this

  1591. son, this horn

  1592. of salvation that

  1593. he is now raising

  1594. up, Jesus.

  1595. Zachariah goes

  1596. on in verse 76

  1597. to talk about

  1598. how his son,

  1599. John, the role

  1600. that he will

  1601. play in all

  1602. this.

  1603. He will prepare

  1604. the people as

  1605. a prophet.

  1606. In verse 77,

  1607. he will be the

  1608. one, John will,

  1609. to give the

  1610. Lord's people the

  1611. knowledge of

  1612. salvation.

  1613. salvation through

  1614. the forgiveness

  1615. of their sins

  1616. because of the

  1617. tender mercy of

  1618. our God.

  1619. John's role will

  1620. be to give the

  1621. Lord's people the

  1622. knowledge of

  1623. salvation through

  1624. the forgiveness of

  1625. their sins.

  1626. So there's two

  1627. salvations spoken

  1628. of by Zachariah.

  1629. There's from

  1630. enemies and now

  1631. we hear from

  1632. sins.

  1633. the one that

  1634. we're most

  1635. familiar with.

  1636. Salvation from

  1637. the punishment

  1638. that we deserve

  1639. from God

  1640. because of our

  1641. sins.

  1642. John will get

  1643. to declare this

  1644. wonderful news

  1645. that God

  1646. is ready

  1647. and eager

  1648. to forgive.

  1649. To forgive

  1650. even sinners,

  1651. those who have

  1652. done wrong

  1653. done wrong

  1654. by him.

  1655. And why?

  1656. Because of

  1657. his tender

  1658. mercy.

  1659. He is a

  1660. merciful God.

  1661. Beneath those

  1662. words

  1663. is the idea

  1664. that God has

  1665. a merciful

  1666. heart.

  1667. That down

  1668. in the very

  1669. depths of who

  1670. he is,

  1671. the very heart

  1672. of his being,

  1673. he is

  1674. merciful.

  1675. And so

  1676. John,

  1677. he is raising

  1678. up as a

  1679. prophet to

  1680. tell us how

  1681. we might find

  1682. that forgiveness

  1683. for our sins

  1684. and how we

  1685. might be

  1686. delivered,

  1687. saved from

  1688. what we truly

  1689. deserve from

  1690. God.

  1691. Zachariah

  1692. ends this

  1693. psalm of praise

  1694. with this very

  1695. poetic statement

  1696. moment of

  1697. how God's

  1698. mercy is

  1699. coming to

  1700. us in

  1701. this moment

  1702. in human

  1703. history.

  1704. He says

  1705. it's like

  1706. the sun

  1707. in all

  1708. its goodness

  1709. and brilliance

  1710. and warmth.

  1711. It's like

  1712. the sun

  1713. is rising

  1714. and beginning

  1715. to shine

  1716. into the

  1717. darkness

  1718. and shadow

  1719. of our

  1720. existence

  1721. here in

  1722. this world.

  1723. And the

  1724. light of

  1725. his mercy

  1726. as it's

  1727. rising over

  1728. our world

  1729. is now

  1730. illuminating

  1731. something that

  1732. we could

  1733. scarcely see

  1734. before.

  1735. The path

  1736. of peace

  1737. by his

  1738. mercy

  1739. we can

  1740. now see

  1741. it.

  1742. We can

  1743. now walk

  1744. in it.

  1745. The path

  1746. of true

  1747. everlasting

  1748. peace

  1749. with God.

  1750. These are

  1751. amazing words.

  1752. Luke closes

  1753. this section

  1754. with a brief

  1755. statement of

  1756. how it went

  1757. with little

  1758. baby John

  1759. in verse

  1760. 80.

  1761. And the

  1762. child grew

  1763. and became

  1764. strong

  1765. in spirit

  1766. or in

  1767. the spirit

  1768. and he

  1769. lived in

  1770. the wilderness

  1771. until he

  1772. appeared

  1773. publicly

  1774. to Israel.

  1775. That would

  1776. be 30

  1777. years

  1778. later.

  1779. So

  1780. Elizabeth

  1781. recognized

  1782. it.

  1783. Mary

  1784. recognized

  1785. it.

  1786. Zechariah

  1787. recognized

  1788. it.

  1789. he

  1790. recognizes

  1791. what God

  1792. is doing

  1793. through this

  1794. child of

  1795. Mary's

  1796. to be

  1797. born.

  1798. And

  1799. it's

  1800. amazing.

  1801. He says

  1802. the Lord

  1803. has come

  1804. to us

  1805. to redeem

  1806. us,

  1807. to save

  1808. us,

  1809. to forgive

  1810. us,

  1811. to deliver

  1812. us one

  1813. day from

  1814. all our

  1815. enemies,

  1816. to make

  1817. good on

  1818. that ancient

  1819. promise he

  1820. made to

  1821. Abraham,

  1822. to bring

  1823. us closely

  1824. back into

  1825. relationship

  1826. with him

  1827. so that we

  1828. can serve

  1829. him and live

  1830. before him

  1831. without fear.

  1832. And he's

  1833. doing all

  1834. this because

  1835. he is a

  1836. faithful God

  1837. and because

  1838. he is truly

  1839. to the core

  1840. of his

  1841. being

  1842. merciful.

  1843. Do you

  1844. recognize

  1845. it?

  1846. Do your

  1847. eyes see

  1848. this great

  1849. dawn of

  1850. salvation?

  1851. Can you

  1852. see the

  1853. path to

  1854. peace?

  1855. Can you

  1856. see the

  1857. path to

  1858. peace?

  1859. It all

  1860. centers around

  1861. this child,

  1862. this son

  1863. of David,

  1864. Jesus.

  1865. Let's

  1866. pray.

  1867. Father in

  1868. heaven, I

  1869. pray that you

  1870. would grip

  1871. our hearts

  1872. so deeply

  1873. with your

  1874. goodness and

  1875. kindness to

  1876. us.

  1877. We do

  1878. not deserve

  1879. this.

  1880. We do

  1881. not deserve

  1882. this.

  1883. We have

  1884. all blown

  1885. it in

  1886. so many

  1887. ways we

  1888. can't even

  1889. keep track.

  1890. And yet you

  1891. have loved

  1892. us

  1893. by sending

  1894. your son,

  1895. by coming

  1896. to redeem

  1897. us.

  1898. Thank you.

  1899. Touch our

  1900. hearts deeply

  1901. with this,

  1902. Lord,

  1903. and I pray

  1904. that if there's

  1905. anyone in

  1906. this room

  1907. who has

  1908. not seen

  1909. and felt

  1910. your mercy

  1911. and your

  1912. love for

  1913. them

  1914. personally,

  1915. that they

  1916. would know

  1917. it today.

  1918. We ask

  1919. this in

  1920. your name.

  1921. Amen.

  1922. Amen.
