  1. going to be looking at that wonderful and familiar passage, which we heard read on Friday

  2. evening, that tells us about the birth of Jesus.

  3. And up until now, we've heard about the wonderful and miraculous signs that God began to do

  4. to show that he was at work.

  5. We heard about the two angelic visits.

  6. We heard about two miraculous conceptions.

  7. We heard about the birth of John to his elderly parents, Zachariah and Elizabeth.

  8. And today we're going to hear about what happened with Mary, the one promised to bear the greatest

  9. of sons.

  10. We're in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  11. And I'm going to read the first few verses here for us.

  12. Luke, chapter 2, verse 1.

    Luke 2:1

  13. In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire

  14. Roman world.

  15. This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.

  16. And everyone went to their own town to register.

  17. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem, the town

  18. of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

  19. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting

  20. a child.

  21. So the story of Jesus' birth, Luke says, begins with the decree from the Roman emperor, Caesar

  22. Augustus.

  23. This time in Israel, the Romans were in charge.

  24. They had the empire all around the Mediterranean Sea.

  25. And we might wonder, why does Luke mention this?

  26. What does it have to do with the birth of Jesus?

  27. Well, as we reflect on Luke's words here, we realize that it was this decree from the

  28. Roman emperor which moved Mary and Joseph from the northern town of Nazareth in Galilee

  29. all the way down to Bethlehem in Judea.

  30. Why did they go there?

  31. Because the census required them to go there.

  32. Everybody had to go to the town of their forefathers and register.

  33. And here it is, according to Luke.

  34. It says,

  35. This is his emphasis.

  36. We could talk about the fulfillment of the prophecy through Micah, but Luke wants us to

  37. see the connection here.

  38. He wants us to see the ancestry, the lineage.

  39. God used the decree of a ruler across the sea to publicly confirm that, yes, this child

  40. of Mary's is, in fact, a descendant of the great king David.

  41. And as every Jew would have known, to be the Messiah, he must be descended from David.

  42. It was to King David a thousand years earlier that the promise of a son who would reign was made.

  43. And so that's the significance of this decree, this census.

  44. It made it obvious.

  45. It made it undeniable.

  46. It put it in the record books that Jesus really is the son of David.

  47. Think about this.

  48. Why else would you make that journey in the third trimester?

  49. They didn't have cars back then.

  50. They were compelled to make the journey by the decree to register.

  51. This is Luke's way of saying this, this too is a sign that God gave that Jesus, the son of Mary,

  52. is that one, the Messiah.

  53. While they were there, Mary and Joseph, the time came for the baby to be born.

  54. And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.

  55. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them.

  56. Evidently, the little town of Bethlehem had become a bustling place with the influx of travelers who had come to register for this census.

  57. And in the bustle, Mary and Joseph had been unable to get a guest room of their own,

  58. whether at the local inn or with family.

  59. And so they ended up in a stable or a barn or something like that.

  60. That's the place for a manger.

  61. This is surprising, isn't it?

  62. The bed of the newly born king.

  63. God's chosen king was a feeding trough for animals.

  64. A dirty and despicable thing.

  65. A thing gnawed on and drooled on by animals.

  66. Can you imagine laying your child in a dirty feeding trough?

  67. Because that's the best there is.

  68. That's all you have.

  69. Can you imagine thinking the thought,

  70. at least he's off the ground.

  71. God chose the humblest and lowliest of circumstances for the birth of his son.

  72. The one who was to become the greatest of kings.

  73. And we wonder, why?

  74. Luke doesn't really tell us why here,

  75. beyond because there was no guest room available for them.

  76. He just sort of carries on with the story.

  77. But there are some other thoughts that we could think,

  78. places we could look in the scriptures for an answer.

  79. One thing we may notice is that

  80. God seems to have deliberately arranged the story of his son

  81. to pattern the life of his forefather,

  82. King David.

  83. Could it be that this is done intentionally

  84. to confirm that he is the Messiah?

  85. The parallels between David and Jesus are striking.

  86. Both from Bethlehem.

  87. Both start in poverty.

  88. Neither born to nobility.

  89. Both are raised up to the throne by God.

  90. And for both, the path to that throne

  91. goes through tremendous suffering and affliction from enemies.

  92. And yet, God delivers both from their enemies.

  93. And he uses both to give deliverance to his people

  94. from their enemies

  95. and to give them peace.

  96. And of course, in all these parallels,

  97. David is the lesser

  98. and Jesus, the son of David,

  99. is the greater and the ultimate.

  100. And so if this is God's intention and plan,

  101. if he's doing this on purpose

  102. to show something about his son,

  103. the manger in Bethlehem

  104. makes a little more sense, maybe.

  105. That's where David

  106. was from, too.

  107. That's the kind of humble and lowly beginnings

  108. that he had, too.

  109. This reminds me of what Mary

  110. said in her Psalm of Praise,

  111. which we looked at a couple weeks ago,

  112. back in chapter 1.

  113. She praised God,

  114. the Mighty One,

  115. because

  116. he is a God who has brought down rulers

  117. from their thrones,

  118. but has lifted up

  119. the humble.

  120. We talked a couple weeks ago

  121. about how this was one of God's signature moves.

  122. He loves to exalt

  123. and raise up

  124. and lift up

  125. the humble

  126. and lowly.

  127. And as we ponder

  128. that signature move of God,

  129. the thing that he has done

  130. all through history

  131. with so many people,

  132. is it a surprise

  133. that he will do it this way

  134. again

  135. for his son,

  136. the ultimate king,

  137. from a manger

  138. in a small town

  139. to the throne

  140. of heaven and earth.

  141. We'll talk more about this later.

  142. Let's continue to listen

  143. to Luke's telling

  144. of how things went.

  145. Verse 7,

  146. And she gave birth

  147. to her firstborn son,

  148. her firstborn,

  149. a son.

  150. She wrapped him in cloths

  151. and placed him in a manger

  152. because there was no guest room

  153. available for them.

  154. And there were shepherds

  155. living out in the fields nearby,

  156. keeping watch over their flocks

  157. at night.

  158. An angel of the Lord

  159. appeared to them

  160. and the glory of the Lord

  161. shone around them

  162. and they were terrified.

  163. But the angel said to them,

  164. Do not be afraid.

  165. I bring you good news

  166. that will cause great joy

  167. for all the people.

  168. Today in the town of David

  169. a Savior has been born to you.

  170. He is the Messiah,

  171. the Lord.

  172. This will be a sign to you.

  173. You will find a baby

  174. wrapped in cloths

  175. and lying in a manger.

  176. Suddenly,

  177. a great company

  178. of the heavenly host

  179. appeared with the angel,

  180. praising God

  181. and saying,

  182. Glory to God

  183. in the highest heaven

  184. and on earth

  185. peace

  186. to those

  187. on whom

  188. his favor rests.

  189. While the circumstances

  190. of Jesus' birth

  191. are lowly,

  192. his birthday

  193. did not go unmarked

  194. or unannounced.

  195. And this announcement

  196. is quite spectacular.

  197. It starts with

  198. one angel,

  199. a single angel,

  200. suddenly appearing

  201. to some shepherds

  202. who are out in the fields

  203. near Bethlehem

  204. at night.

  205. And Luke describes

  206. in detail

  207. the spectacle.

  208. This angel of the Lord

  209. is suddenly there

  210. before them

  211. and the glory

  212. of the Lord

  213. shone around them.

  214. this angel,

  215. it would seem,

  216. was radiant.

  217. He was lighting up

  218. the night

  219. and the area

  220. around

  221. all these shepherds

  222. with the brilliant light

  223. of God's glory.

  224. And the response

  225. of the shepherds

  226. in that moment

  227. was terror.

  228. In the literal

  229. phrasing of Luke

  230. long ago,

  231. they feared

  232. a great fear.

  233. Can you imagine this?

  234. You're out there

  235. in the dark

  236. with nothing

  237. but the light

  238. of the stars,

  239. perhaps the moon.

  240. And then in an instant,

  241. you're blinded

  242. by this

  243. brilliant light

  244. shining at you

  245. and all around you.

  246. And your heart

  247. begins to pound

  248. and your knees

  249. grow weak.

  250. You're frozen

  251. with fear

  252. trying to figure out

  253. what's happening.

  254. and then out

  255. of the brightness,

  256. this being

  257. speaks to you.

  258. Do not be afraid

  259. for behold,

  260. I bring you

  261. good news.

  262. And this good news

  263. is going to bring

  264. great joy

  265. for all people.

  266. people.

  267. And what is the news?

  268. Today in the town

  269. of David,

  270. a Savior

  271. has been born

  272. to you.

  273. He is

  274. the Messiah,

  275. the Lord.

  276. What does the angel

  277. want them to know

  278. about this child?

  279. We notice a few

  280. things here.

  281. First of all,

  282. notice the emphasis,

  283. today in the town

  284. of David.

  285. There it is again.

  286. But aside from that,

  287. three things

  288. the angel wants

  289. them to know.

  290. First of all,

  291. a Savior

  292. has been born.

  293. What does that word mean?

  294. Means he is your

  295. deliverer.

  296. A deliverer

  297. has been born

  298. born for you.

  299. And we talked

  300. about this title

  301. of Savior

  302. a little bit

  303. in the past few

  304. weeks

  305. and about salvation.

  306. The shepherds

  307. don't know this yet,

  308. what kind of a Savior

  309. he's going to be.

  310. But the rest of the

  311. story as we keep

  312. going through Luke

  313. and on into the rest

  314. of the New Testament

  315. reveals it.

  316. He will be the

  317. ultimate Savior.

  318. He will be the

  319. one who delivers

  320. us from all

  321. of our troubles

  322. and from all

  323. of our enemies.

  324. He will be the

  325. one who saves

  326. and delivers us

  327. from our guilt,

  328. from the punishment

  329. that we deserve

  330. because of our sins.

  331. He will even be

  332. the one who saves

  333. and delivers us

  334. from death itself.

  335. A Savior

  336. has been born

  337. to you.

  338. And who is

  339. this Savior?

  340. Let there be

  341. no doubt.

  342. He is

  343. Christ.

  344. We talked about

  345. this a little bit

  346. on Friday evening.

  347. That's the Greek

  348. word for the

  349. Hebrew word

  350. Messiah.

  351. It means

  352. anointed one.

  353. He is

  354. that one.

  355. Let there be

  356. no doubt.

  357. This child

  358. born to you

  359. today is

  360. the king

  361. of God's

  362. choosing

  363. for his

  364. people.

  365. The one

  366. promised,

  367. the one

  368. prophesied,

  369. the one that

  370. you've been

  371. waiting for.

  372. And third,

  373. he is

  374. Christ

  375. the Lord.

  376. What does it

  377. mean that

  378. he is

  379. Christ

  380. the Lord?

  381. Up until

  382. now,

  383. that title,

  384. the Lord,

  385. has been

  386. only used

  387. once in

  388. reference to

  389. Jesus in

  390. Luke's

  391. gospel.

  392. Maybe you

  393. remember,

  394. several months

  395. back,

  396. Elizabeth

  397. called

  398. Mary

  399. the mother

  400. of her

  401. Lord.

  402. And we

  403. don't really

  404. have lords

  405. in our

  406. culture today

  407. like they

  408. did in

  409. days long

  410. ago,

  411. but the

  412. inherent

  413. idea is

  414. master

  415. or ruler.

  416. One who

  417. has

  418. authority

  419. over

  420. his

  421. servants

  422. or his

  423. subjects

  424. or his

  425. household

  426. or his

  427. city.

  428. Interestingly

  429. enough,

  430. the Hebrew

  431. equivalent,

  432. Adonai,

  433. was used

  434. in place

  435. of the

  436. name of

  437. God by

  438. Jews for

  439. centuries

  440. before this.

  441. And they

  442. did this out

  443. of reverence

  444. for God's

  445. name.

  446. In the

  447. scriptures,

  448. as they

  449. would copy

  450. them,

  451. they would

  452. actually have

  453. the letters

  454. of God's

  455. name,

  456. Yahweh,

  457. the consonants,

  458. but then they

  459. would put the

  460. vowel points

  461. of the word

  462. Adonai to

  463. remind anyone

  464. reading the

  465. scriptures not

  466. to say his

  467. name out of

  468. reverence for

  469. his name.

  470. So instead

  471. they would

  472. say Lord.

  473. And so

  474. Lord was

  475. very much

  476. a name

  477. and title

  478. of God

  479. as well.

  480. It's

  481. unclear here

  482. whether the

  483. angel means

  484. to say

  485. that much.

  486. This is

  487. Christ,

  488. Yahweh.

  489. It's going

  490. to come out

  491. later though.

  492. Or does he

  493. want to put

  494. the emphasis

  495. on the fact

  496. that he is

  497. going to be

  498. the master,

  499. the ruler,

  500. the one in

  501. authority

  502. over all.

  503. These are

  504. the three

  505. things the

  506. angel wants

  507. the shepherds

  508. to understand

  509. about this

  510. child born

  511. to them in

  512. the nearby

  513. town.

  514. He is a

  515. savior for

  516. you.

  517. He is

  518. Christ,

  519. the Messiah.

  520. He is

  521. your Lord.

  522. And with

  523. that the

  524. angel gives

  525. them the

  526. sign,

  527. the key

  528. thing by

  529. which they

  530. might find

  531. him and

  532. identify him

  533. in Bethlehem.

  534. And the

  535. sign is

  536. two things.

  537. A baby

  538. wrapped in

  539. cloths.

  540. This language

  541. was used to

  542. describe the

  543. swaddling of

  544. an infant in

  545. strips of

  546. cloth.

  547. And that

  548. was a fairly

  549. common thing.

  550. And so this

  551. part of the

  552. sign is

  553. probably only

  554. signaling to

  555. the shepherds

  556. that you're

  557. looking for a

  558. baby that's

  559. brand new.

  560. How many

  561. babies had

  562. just been

  563. born in

  564. the small

  565. town of

  566. Bethlehem?

  567. That would

  568. narrow things

  569. down a lot.

  570. But then the

  571. second thing

  572. to look for,

  573. you will find

  574. this swaddled

  575. baby lying

  576. in the

  577. manger.

  578. The feeding

  579. trough.

  580. That's the

  581. thing Luke

  582. mentioned earlier.

  583. It shows the

  584. lowliness of

  585. his birth and

  586. it becomes the

  587. sign for the

  588. shepherds.

  589. How many

  590. newly born

  591. babies in

  592. the town

  593. are lying

  594. in a cattle

  595. trough?

  596. only one.

  597. Then it

  598. gets even

  599. more

  600. spectacular.

  601. A great

  602. company of

  603. the heavenly

  604. host appeared

  605. with the

  606. angel,

  607. praising God

  608. and saying,

  609. glory to

  610. God in

  611. the highest

  612. heaven and

  613. on earth

  614. peace to

  615. those on

  616. whom his

  617. favor rests.

  618. glory to

  619. God in the

  620. highest heaven

  621. and on earth.

  622. glory to

  623. glory to

  624. glory to

  625. glory to

  626. glory to

  627. glory to

  628. glory to

  629. God in

  630. the highest

  631. heaven and

  632. on earth.

  633. Peace to

  634. those on

  635. whom his

  636. favor rests.

  637. glory to

  638. man.

  639. This declaration

  640. speaks of the

  641. worthiness of

  642. God.

  643. May he be

  644. worshipped,

  645. acknowledged,

  646. praised,

  647. given glory in

  648. the highest

  649. heaven, the

  650. highest place

  651. where he is.

  652. And it also

  653. speaks of God's

  654. peace and

  655. favor to

  656. humanity.

  657. Through this

  658. child now

  659. born, God is

  660. offering peace

  661. to man.

  662. God is

  663. showing grace,

  664. his favor to

  665. mankind.

  666. Can you

  667. imagine hearing

  668. thousands of

  669. angels chanting

  670. this?

  671. What an

  672. awesome and

  673. spectacular moment

  674. that must have

  675. been.

  676. The greatest

  677. birth announcement

  678. ever made for

  679. anyone.

  680. God declares it

  681. into the silent

  682. night.

  683. And yet here

  684. again we're left

  685. to wonder.

  686. The most

  687. spectacular

  688. birth announcement.

  689. The greatest

  690. news given

  691. to who?

  692. Some sheep

  693. herders in

  694. the hills.

  695. Again we see

  696. God choosing

  697. the lowly and

  698. even the

  699. despised.

  700. Shepherds in

  701. that day were

  702. considered to be

  703. of very little

  704. social standing.

  705. They were often

  706. looked down on

  707. with contempt.

  708. Why break

  709. this news

  710. to them

  711. and only

  712. them?

  713. When the

  714. angels had

  715. left them

  716. and gone

  717. into heaven

  718. the shepherds

  719. said to one

  720. another

  721. let's go to

  722. Bethlehem

  723. and see

  724. this thing

  725. that has

  726. happened

  727. which the

  728. Lord has

  729. told us

  730. about.

  731. So they

  732. hurried off

  733. and found

  734. Mary and

  735. Joseph

  736. and the

  737. baby

  738. who was

  739. lying in

  740. the manger.

  741. When they

  742. had seen

  743. him they

  744. spread the

  745. word concerning

  746. what had

  747. been told

  748. them about

  749. this child

  750. and all

  751. who heard

  752. it were

  753. amazed at

  754. what the

  755. shepherds

  756. said to

  757. them.

  758. But Mary

  759. treasured up

  760. all these

  761. things and

  762. pondered them

  763. in her

  764. heart.

  765. The shepherds

  766. returned glorifying

  767. and praising

  768. God for all

  769. the things

  770. they had

  771. heard and

  772. seen which

  773. were just

  774. as they

  775. had been

  776. told.

  777. So the

  778. shepherds

  779. it seems

  780. waste no

  781. time in

  782. going to

  783. find the

  784. newly born

  785. Messiah.

  786. I would

  787. have loved

  788. to have

  789. been in

  790. their company

  791. in that

  792. moment and

  793. just hear

  794. some of the

  795. things that

  796. they were

  797. saying as

  798. they thought

  799. this through.

  800. The angel

  801. told us you

  802. will find

  803. the baby

  804. wrapped in

  805. claws and

  806. lying in

  807. a manger.

  808. I think

  809. we should

  810. go and

  811. find the

  812. baby.

  813. I think

  814. we're

  815. supposed to

  816. do that

  817. right now.

  818. Why not?

  819. Let's go.

  820. And they

  821. head into

  822. town.

  823. Luke tells

  824. us they

  825. found him

  826. exactly as

  827. the angel

  828. had spoken

  829. lying in

  830. a manger.

  831. Verse 17

  832. is in my

  833. opinion likely

  834. one of the

  835. most misinterpreted

  836. verses in

  837. Luke's

  838. account.

  839. what many

  840. people see

  841. in these

  842. verses is

  843. that the

  844. shepherds

  845. went and

  846. saw Jesus

  847. and then

  848. went out

  849. into the

  850. town and

  851. began spreading

  852. the word of

  853. what they

  854. had been

  855. told by

  856. the angels

  857. about the

  858. child to

  859. all the

  860. townspeople.

  861. And all

  862. the townspeople

  863. were amazed

  864. and then

  865. for some

  866. reason we

  867. go back to

  868. Mary who

  869. pondered the

  870. happenings of

  871. the night

  872. and then we

  873. go back to

  874. the shepherds

  875. who then

  876. returned to

  877. their flocks

  878. praising God

  879. for all they

  880. had heard and

  881. seen after an

  882. evening of

  883. door-to-door

  884. evangelism.

  885. And from

  886. this have

  887. come all

  888. kinds of

  889. interesting

  890. embellishments

  891. about how

  892. the shepherds

  893. ran through

  894. the town

  895. knocking on

  896. doors with

  897. giddy excitement

  898. proclaiming the

  899. Messiah's birth.

  900. And look how

  901. excited and

  902. eager they are

  903. to share the

  904. news of

  905. Christ's birth

  906. and so how

  907. much more

  908. should we be

  909. too?

  910. I have a

  911. different take

  912. on this verse

  913. than many and

  914. you can take

  915. it or you

  916. can leave it

  917. for whatever

  918. it's worth

  919. to you.

  920. But I think

  921. it makes

  922. much more

  923. sense of

  924. the flow

  925. of Luke's

  926. account here

  927. and the

  928. key word

  929. here I

  930. think is

  931. in verse

  932. 17

  933. that word

  934. spread.

  935. When they

  936. had seen

  937. him they

  938. spread the

  939. word concerning

  940. what had been

  941. told them about

  942. this child.

  943. In English

  944. the word

  945. spread carries

  946. the idea of

  947. taking something

  948. around all

  949. over the place

  950. and so it's

  951. no surprise

  952. that we've

  953. kind of come

  954. to that

  955. imagining

  956. that I

  957. just

  958. described.

  959. But the

  960. original word

  961. here doesn't

  962. have that

  963. connotation at

  964. all.

  965. Quite

  966. literally

  967. it would be

  968. more like

  969. and having

  970. seen they

  971. made known

  972. they revealed

  973. concerning the

  974. words which

  975. had been

  976. spoken to

  977. them about

  978. this child.

  979. So the

  980. shepherds

  981. arrive and

  982. after seeing

  983. the baby

  984. lying in the

  985. manger they

  986. make known

  987. they reveal

  988. what they

  989. heard concerning

  990. this child

  991. from the

  992. angel.

  993. Make known

  994. to who?

  995. Reveal to

  996. who?

  997. I think

  998. that verse

  999. 19 speaks

  1000. of Mary

  1001. treasuring up

  1002. all these

  1003. things because

  1004. the shepherds

  1005. are still there

  1006. with her.

  1007. They made it

  1008. known to

  1009. her, to

  1010. Joseph and

  1011. to others

  1012. who had

  1013. perhaps gathered

  1014. with them.

  1015. And all

  1016. who heard

  1017. it,

  1018. are amazed.

  1019. Like this

  1020. child here

  1021. is the

  1022. Messiah.

  1023. You saw

  1024. angels that

  1025. told you

  1026. that this

  1027. child here

  1028. is the

  1029. Messiah?

  1030. No wonder

  1031. they were

  1032. amazed.

  1033. No wonder

  1034. they were

  1035. astonished.

  1036. Mary and

  1037. Joseph were

  1038. probably the

  1039. only ones

  1040. there who

  1041. didn't think

  1042. that sounded

  1043. crazy.

  1044. You guys

  1045. think that

  1046. this baby

  1047. right here

  1048. is the

  1049. Messiah?

  1050. Messiah.

  1051. But it

  1052. wasn't

  1053. crazy to

  1054. Mary.

  1055. She

  1056. treasured up

  1057. all these

  1058. things and

  1059. pondered them

  1060. in her

  1061. heart.

  1062. She knew

  1063. who her

  1064. baby was

  1065. nine months

  1066. before this

  1067. moment when

  1068. Gabriel told

  1069. her who he

  1070. would be.

  1071. This was just

  1072. more confirmation.

  1073. This made it

  1074. even more

  1075. precious to

  1076. her.

  1077. And then

  1078. after the

  1079. shepherds

  1080. visit and

  1081. make known

  1082. what they

  1083. had heard

  1084. and seen,

  1085. they return

  1086. to the

  1087. fields,

  1088. praising

  1089. God along

  1090. the way.

  1091. Imagine that

  1092. you were

  1093. there in

  1094. that moment

  1095. with Mary

  1096. and Joseph.

  1097. You stumbled

  1098. upon this,

  1099. not intentionally,

  1100. but here you

  1101. are.

  1102. There's this

  1103. couple in

  1104. a stable.

  1105. There's this

  1106. baby in a

  1107. feeding trough.

  1108. congratulations

  1109. on the

  1110. birth of

  1111. your son.

  1112. And then

  1113. all of a

  1114. sudden these

  1115. shepherds

  1116. stumble in

  1117. and they

  1118. start talking

  1119. about how

  1120. they just

  1121. saw angels

  1122. and that

  1123. this child

  1124. is the

  1125. Messiah.

  1126. Would you

  1127. believe them?

  1128. most of us

  1129. here recognize

  1130. and believe

  1131. what the

  1132. angel said

  1133. that night

  1134. about this

  1135. child,

  1136. that he is

  1137. the Savior

  1138. and the

  1139. Messiah

  1140. and the

  1141. Lord.

  1142. Maybe you're

  1143. here though

  1144. this morning

  1145. and you

  1146. haven't

  1147. believed

  1148. that or

  1149. haven't

  1150. embraced

  1151. this.

  1152. I wonder,

  1153. is there

  1154. something

  1155. holding you

  1156. back?

  1157. what's

  1158. keeping you

  1159. from fully

  1160. embracing

  1161. Jesus as

  1162. your

  1163. Savior?

  1164. That

  1165. child born

  1166. that night

  1167. as your

  1168. King,

  1169. as your

  1170. Lord?

  1171. There's one

  1172. question I

  1173. couldn't shake

  1174. this week

  1175. as I was

  1176. thinking through

  1177. all this.

  1178. Why did

  1179. God choose

  1180. a manger?

  1181. why did

  1182. he select

  1183. shepherds

  1184. to receive

  1185. the great

  1186. announcement?

  1187. I was

  1188. reminded of

  1189. what the

  1190. Apostle Paul

  1191. said to

  1192. the church

  1193. at Corinth

  1194. and I'll

  1195. just read

  1196. these verses

  1197. for you

  1198. from 1

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  1199. Corinthians

  1200. chapter 1.

  1201. The

  1202. Apostle Paul

  1203. wrote this.

  1204. He said,

  1205. for the

  1206. foolishness

  1207. of God

  1208. is wiser

  1209. than human

  1210. wisdom

  1211. and the

  1212. weakness

  1213. of God

  1214. is stronger

  1215. than human

  1216. strength.

  1217. Brothers and

  1218. sisters,

  1219. think of

  1220. what you

  1221. were when

  1222. you were

  1223. called.

  1224. Not many

  1225. of you

  1226. were wise

  1227. by human

  1228. standards.

  1229. Not many

  1230. were influential.

  1231. Not many

  1232. were of

  1233. noble birth.

  1234. But God

  1235. chose the

  1236. foolish things

  1237. of the

  1238. world

  1239. to shame

  1240. the wise.

  1241. God

  1242. chose the

  1243. weak things

  1244. of the

  1245. world

  1246. to shame

  1247. the strong.

  1248. God

  1249. chose the

  1250. lowly

  1251. things of

  1252. this world

  1253. and the

  1254. despised

  1255. things

  1256. and the

  1257. things that

  1258. are not

  1259. to nullify

  1260. the things

  1261. that are.

  1262. Why?

  1263. So that

  1264. no one

  1265. may boast

  1266. before him.

  1267. God

  1268. had a

  1269. great

  1270. purpose

  1271. in

  1272. choosing

  1273. and

  1274. using

  1275. despised

  1276. and lowly

  1277. things

  1278. and people

  1279. so that

  1280. no one

  1281. may boast

  1282. before him.

  1283. To

  1284. shame

  1285. the

  1286. wise

  1287. of this

  1288. world.

  1289. Those

  1290. who are

  1291. wise

  1292. in their

  1293. own

  1294. eyes.

  1295. Here

  1296. it is

  1297. again.

  1298. This

  1299. is God's

  1300. signature

  1301. move.

  1302. He's

  1303. using

  1304. the

  1305. lowly

  1306. and the

  1307. humble

  1308. and the

  1309. weak

  1310. to

  1311. humble

  1312. the

  1313. proud

  1314. and the

  1315. mighty

  1316. and the

  1317. strong.

  1318. God

  1319. chose a

  1320. manger

  1321. and

  1322. shepherds

  1323. in part

  1324. because that's

  1325. the last

  1326. place

  1327. that the

  1328. proud

  1329. and the

  1330. wise

  1331. and the

  1332. influential

  1333. and the

  1334. powerful

  1335. would look

  1336. for a

  1337. king,

  1338. for a

  1339. savior.

  1340. God

  1341. is

  1342. worthy

  1343. of

  1344. praise.

  1345. He's

  1346. worthy

  1347. of

  1348. praise.

  1349. He's

  1350. worthy

  1351. of

  1352. praise

  1353. and glory

  1354. and

  1355. exaltation

  1356. for his

  1357. true

  1358. wisdom

  1359. and power

  1360. and strength

  1361. and that's

  1362. God

  1363. himself.

  1364. The

  1365. one who

  1366. gave us

  1367. life.

  1368. The

  1369. one who

  1370. brought us

  1371. into being

  1372. and it's a

  1373. difficult thing

  1374. to accept

  1375. but this

  1376. is the

  1377. truth that's

  1378. said through

  1379. the whole

  1380. Bible.

  1381. We are

  1382. not the

  1383. center of

  1384. the universe.

  1385. The world

  1386. does not

  1387. revolve

  1388. around

  1389. us.

  1390. It

  1391. rightly

  1392. revolves

  1393. around

  1394. him.

  1395. He

  1396. is at

  1397. the center

  1398. of

  1399. everything

  1400. and it's

  1401. a good

  1402. thing.

  1403. For us

  1404. to boast

  1405. in ourselves,

  1406. for us

  1407. to think

  1408. highly of

  1409. ourselves

  1410. is a

  1411. spiritual

  1412. violence

  1413. against

  1414. the one

  1415. who truly

  1416. deserves

  1417. all glory

  1418. and honor

  1419. praise

  1420. and

  1421. acknowledgement.

  1422. And so

  1423. what does

  1424. God do?

  1425. He

  1426. humbles

  1427. the proud

  1428. by choosing

  1429. the lowly,

  1430. the despised,

  1431. and the weak

  1432. to accomplish

  1433. his unsearchable

  1434. plans.

  1435. Even his

  1436. plan to

  1437. save,

  1438. it comes

  1439. through a

  1440. nobody girl

  1441. from

  1442. Nazareth.

  1443. it comes

  1444. through a

  1445. feeding

  1446. trough

  1447. in a

  1448. small

  1449. town.

  1450. It's

  1451. revealed

  1452. to

  1453. sheep

  1454. herders.

  1455. It comes

  1456. through a

  1457. cross.

  1458. It's

  1459. carried

  1460. forward

  1461. by

  1462. fishermen

  1463. and a

  1464. former

  1465. tax

  1466. collector.

  1467. This is

  1468. God's

  1469. signature

  1470. work of

  1471. power

  1472. on

  1473. display.

  1474. That's

  1475. where it

  1476. starts,

  1477. but it's

  1478. not where

  1479. it ends.

  1480. God's

  1481. plan will

  1482. take

  1483. Jesus

  1484. from the

  1485. manger

  1486. to the

  1487. throne.

  1488. It will

  1489. take him

  1490. from the

  1491. cross

  1492. to the

  1493. empty

  1494. tomb.

  1495. It will

  1496. take him

  1497. from earth

  1498. to the

  1499. heights of

  1500. heaven.

  1501. His

  1502. first

  1503. coming was

  1504. lowly

  1505. and meek,

  1506. seen and

  1507. known by

  1508. only a

  1509. few.

  1510. But his

  1511. second coming

  1512. will be

  1513. glorious

  1514. and powerful

  1515. and every

  1516. eye will

  1517. see and

  1518. every knee

  1519. will bow

  1520. and every

  1521. tongue will

  1522. confess that

  1523. he is

  1524. Lord to

  1525. the glory

  1526. of God

  1527. the Father.

  1528. This is

  1529. God's

  1530. way.

  1531. I love

  1532. the news

  1533. that the

  1534. angels

  1535. brought.

  1536. God's

  1537. offer of

  1538. peace

  1539. is here.

  1540. Salvation

  1541. has come

  1542. and yet

  1543. only those

  1544. willing to

  1545. humble

  1546. themselves

  1547. go to

  1548. the

  1549. stable

  1550. and bend

  1551. their knee

  1552. before the

  1553. child in

  1554. the feeding

  1555. trough

  1556. will receive

  1557. this peace

  1558. and salvation.

  1559. I think

  1560. the question

  1561. it brings

  1562. us to

  1563. had we

  1564. been there

  1565. and even

  1566. today

  1567. will you

  1568. humble

  1569. yourself

  1570. to worship

  1571. this king?

  1572. will you

  1573. embrace

  1574. the seeming

  1575. foolishness

  1576. of all

  1577. this

  1578. to believe

  1579. in his

  1580. name?

  1581. Will you

  1582. give him

  1583. the honor

  1584. and glory

  1585. that he

  1586. deserves

  1587. though the

  1588. world

  1589. doesn't

  1590. see it?

  1591. There is

  1592. only one

  1593. among men

  1594. who is

  1595. worthy

  1596. the

  1597. Christ

  1598. our

  1599. Savior

  1600. our

  1601. Lord.

  1602. Let's

  1603. pray.

  1604. Father in

  1605. heaven

  1606. many of

  1607. us

  1608. love

  1609. these

  1610. words

  1611. and

  1612. believe

  1613. them

  1614. with all

  1615. our

  1616. hearts

  1617. but

  1618. for

  1619. anyone

  1620. who may

  1621. not

  1622. Lord

  1623. we pray

  1624. and ask

  1625. that

  1626. faith

  1627. would be

  1628. found

  1629. in their

  1630. hearts

  1631. not just

  1632. in this

  1633. room

  1634. but also

  1635. in our

  1636. community

  1637. Lord

  1638. we all

  1639. need

  1640. you

  1641. we all

  1642. need

  1643. your

  1644. salvation

  1645. you are

  1646. the king

  1647. that our

  1648. hearts

  1649. truly

  1650. desire

  1651. we grow

  1652. dissatisfied

  1653. with

  1654. government

  1655. and bureaucracy

  1656. and politics

  1657. and all

  1658. this stuff

  1659. because

  1660. our hearts

  1661. long

  1662. for the

  1663. perfect

  1664. true

  1665. justice

  1666. real

  1667. peace

  1668. decisions

  1669. made

  1670. and

  1671. righteousness

  1672. that

  1673. really

  1674. work

  1675. and

  1676. one

  1677. day

  1678. we cling

  1679. to that

  1680. promise

  1681. that you

  1682. will

  1683. provide

  1684. that

  1685. when

  1686. your

  1687. son

  1688. returns

  1689. to

  1690. reign

  1691. blessed

  1692. be

  1693. your

  1694. name

  1695. amen

  1696. up

  1697. Wrong

  1698. way

  1699. man

  1700. In

  1701. praise

  1702. the

  1703. hard

  1704. to

  1705. fight

  1706. for the

  1707. мон
