  1. All right, well this morning as we continue our way through the Gospel of Luke,

  2. we've already covered now the first two chapters of the book.

  3. And just as a bit of a recap, these are some of the things that Luke has told us about.

  4. The first sign that God was about to do something was the angel Gabriel

  5. appearing to Zechariah in the temple.

  6. And we heard the announcement of John's birth.

  7. Then there was the appearance of the angel to Mary.

  8. And we heard the announcement of the birth of Jesus,

  9. the one who would be the Messiah and the Son of God.

  10. Then there was the miraculous conceptions of both women,

  11. one elderly and one a virgin.

  12. Then we heard about the birth of John and then the birth of Jesus.

  13. We heard the prophetic praise of both Mary and Zechariah.

  14. Luke told us about the circumcision and naming of both John and Jesus.

  15. And then there was the dedication of Jesus as an infant at the temple

  16. and the prophetic words that were spoken about him by Simeon and Anna.

  17. And then last Sunday, we heard about one memorable moment from Jesus' boyhood

  18. when he was 12 years old.

  19. We heard about Jesus' understanding of who he was.

  20. And from there, Luke now fast forwards 18 years

  21. to the events leading up to the public ministry of Jesus.

  22. And things began to unfold in this way.

  23. From Luke chapter 3, let me read the first couple verses for us.

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  24. In the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,

  25. when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea,

  26. Herod, tetrarch of Galilee,

  27. his brother Philip, tetrarch of Aeturia and Trachonitis,

  28. and Lysanias, tetrarch of Abilene,

  29. during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,

  30. the word of God came to John, son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.

  31. So Luke anchors the chronology of this whole next part of the story

  32. in the historical reigns of several well-known political figures.

  33. We notice that there's been a change of emperor in the Roman Empire.

  34. If we just glance back at Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  35. it says,

  36. In those days, Caesar Augustus issued a decree.

  37. Well, now there's a new Caesar,

  38. and it's Tiberius.

  39. Augustus, he ruled up until about 14 AD and died.

  40. But 10 years prior to this,

  41. he formally adopted his stepson, Tiberius,

  42. making him an heir to the imperial throne.

  43. And Luke tells us that what we're about to read

  44. happened in the 15th year already of Tiberius' rule.

  45. Luke also lets us know who the local rulers were at the time in Israel.

  46. And we notice here, too, that some things have changed.

  47. When Jesus was born,

  48. Herod was king of the whole land of Israel,

  49. though it was under Roman rule.

  50. But not long after Jesus was born,

  51. King Herod died.

  52. Upon his death,

  53. Herod's kingdom was divided up into four parts,

  54. and his sons and daughters became the rulers of each of those parts.

  55. Rome did not grant them the title of king or queen,

  56. but gave them the title of tetrarch,

  57. meaning ruler of a fourth part.

  58. By this time,

  59. the southern region of Judea,

  60. where Jerusalem is,

  61. is now a Roman province,

  62. and it's ruled by the Roman governor,

  63. Pontius Pilate.

  64. And Galilee in the north

  65. is ruled by Herod the tetrarch.

  66. So this is not King Herod,

  67. but King Herod's son,

  68. a man who is named Herod Antipas.

  69. So this kind of sets the political landscape for us.

  70. It helps us know when all this happened,

  71. and who's in power.

  72. And both Herod and Pilate are going to play

  73. a role in what's about to unfold.

  74. So it's good to know a little bit of who they are.

  75. In addition to all this,

  76. Luke sets the landscape on the religious side of things

  77. a little bit,

  78. as far as the temple goes.

  79. He says,

  80. this happened during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas.

  81. And both of these men will also factor into

  82. what happens with Jesus.

  83. So this is kind of a long intro

  84. to what Luke is about to tell us.

  85. But Luke wants us to know precisely

  86. when these things took place.

  87. He wants us to know this stuff that happened

  88. happened at a definite time.

  89. These are real people.

  90. And finally, we come to Luke's main statement

  91. in all of this.

  92. During the reigns of these men

  93. and the high priesthood of these men,

  94. the word of God came to John,

  95. son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.

  96. The word of God came to John.

  97. This is a figure of speech that's often used in the Old Testament

  98. to describe how God would speak to people.

  99. We often read there,

  100. the word of God or the word of the Lord came to

  101. men like Abram,

  102. Samuel,

  103. Nathan,

  104. Solomon,

  105. Elijah,

  106. Isaiah,

  107. Jeremiah,

  108. Ezekiel,

  109. and many more.

  110. And the majority of these references

  111. describe not just how God spoke to people,

  112. but specifically how he spoke to men called prophets.

  113. And these men were then tasked with relaying the word of God

  114. which came to them to the people,

  115. to others.

  116. In fact, I would argue that's the very essence

  117. of what a prophet is in the scriptures.

  118. It's a person to whom the word of God comes.

  119. They begin to hear the voice of God speaking to them

  120. and are responsible then to speak those same words to others.

  121. So this statement of Luke's lets us know

  122. that there was a specific time

  123. when God began to speak to John,

  124. the son of Zechariah,

  125. and then threw him to the people.

  126. He wasn't born a prophet.

  127. The sense we get here is that he didn't become a prophet

  128. until he began hearing the voice of God

  129. all these years later

  130. during the reigns of these men.

  131. And so this is yet another sign that God is at work.

  132. And this one is going to be very visible

  133. compared to some of the other ones

  134. that many did not know about.

  135. Do you remember what Gabriel said about John

  136. to his father Zechariah

  137. even before John was conceived?

  138. Gabriel said that John would go on before the Lord

  139. in the spirit and power of Elijah

  140. to turn the hearts of the parents to their children

  141. and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous

  142. to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

  143. Do you remember what Zechariah prophesied

  144. on the day that they named John

  145. when his tongue was set free

  146. and he was able to speak again?

  147. He said,

  148. So they waited about 30 years.

  149. 30 years.

  150. And then finally,

  151. God's word came true.

  152. The word of God came to John.

  153. John began hearing the voice of God

  154. while he was out in the wilderness

  155. and he began speaking the word of God to the people.

  156. Verse 3.

  157. John went into all the country around the Jordan

  158. preaching a baptism of repentance

  159. for the forgiveness of sins.

  160. So John begins traveling around

  161. kind of the lesser inhabited regions of the Jordan River

  162. and as he goes about,

  163. he is preaching.

  164. He is proclaiming the words

  165. that he is hearing from God.

  166. And what does God have to say to people?

  167. Luke sums it up with

  168. a baptism of repentance

  169. for the forgiveness of sins.

  170. And that's a loaded phrase there.

  171. There's a lot in there.

  172. So we're going to unpack it.

  173. We'll go one word at a time.

  174. First of all,

  175. he was preaching a baptism.

  176. In other words,

  177. he was proclaiming that people should come

  178. and be baptized.

  179. The word baptized is a transliteration

  180. of the Greek word baptizo.

  181. And it means to immerse

  182. or to plunge

  183. or to dip

  184. or to wash in water.

  185. And so John was proclaiming

  186. that people should come

  187. and be dipped

  188. into the water of the Jordan River.

  189. And this physical immersion of people

  190. into the water

  191. had a symbolic spiritual meaning.

  192. This baptism signified repentance.

  193. Repentance means

  194. to have a change of mind

  195. or a change of heart.

  196. And it often includes

  197. an element of remorse

  198. or regret for wrongs done.

  199. The Bible frequently speaks

  200. of repenting of sins,

  201. which includes this idea

  202. of confessing

  203. or acknowledging to God

  204. the wrongs that we have done.

  205. So it's not just an intellectual

  206. change of mind

  207. like a change of beliefs.

  208. The call to repent

  209. is a call to personally own

  210. and admit

  211. your sins,

  212. your wrongs

  213. to the Lord.

  214. And I can't emphasize

  215. this relational aspect

  216. of repentance enough.

  217. You know,

  218. this isn't just about

  219. seeing the negative consequences

  220. of our sins

  221. and then resolving

  222. to do something different

  223. or something better.

  224. This is about understanding

  225. that in all our sins,

  226. we are sinning against

  227. God himself.

  228. There's a relational aspect there.

  229. We transgress

  230. against God himself.

  231. And so repentance

  232. is this relational thing.

  233. And some of the most

  234. helpful words here

  235. are the words of Jesus,

  236. which he spoke later on

  237. in Luke.

  238. Luke chapter 17,

    Luke 17:3

  239. verse 3.

  240. Jesus says,

  241. If your brother or sister

  242. sins against you,

  243. rebuke them.

  244. And if they repent,

  245. forgive them.

  246. Even if they sin against you

  247. seven times in a day,

  248. and seven times

  249. come back to you

  250. saying,

  251. I repent,

  252. you must forgive them.

  253. Notice the relational nature

  254. of repentance.

  255. It involves going to the person

  256. that you sinned against

  257. and acknowledging

  258. that you wronged them.

  259. Why would you do that?

  260. Because the relationship

  261. is broken.

  262. And in order to restore it,

  263. you must go to that person.

  264. You must admit the wrong

  265. that you've done

  266. to that person

  267. and seek their forgiveness.

  268. Now this example

  269. of repentance

  270. and forgiveness,

  271. which Jesus

  272. mentions here,

  273. is between human beings.

  274. But now John

  275. is calling people

  276. to repent

  277. of their sins

  278. against God.

  279. And here's

  280. the wonderful good news.

  281. He was preaching

  282. a baptism

  283. of repentance

  284. for the forgiveness

  285. of sins.

  286. So come,

  287. repent

  288. of your sins

  289. against God.

  290. Confess the wrongs

  291. that you have done

  292. to Him.

  293. God is eager.

  294. He is willing

  295. to forgive you

  296. of your sins.

  297. Be dipped

  298. in this water

  299. here,

  300. now,

  301. right there

  302. in the Jordan,

  303. believing

  304. that God

  305. will wash

  306. you clean

  307. of the guilt

  308. of your sins

  309. against Him.

  310. This is what

  311. the baptism

  312. symbolized.

  313. It was an act

  314. that God gave

  315. for people to do,

  316. very tangible,

  317. as they were

  318. confessing,

  319. as they were

  320. repenting.

  321. They'd give

  322. that confession

  323. of their sins

  324. to God

  325. and then John

  326. would dip

  327. them in the water

  328. as a sort

  329. of tangible,

  330. visible,

  331. outward show

  332. of what God

  333. will do

  334. for the person

  335. who repents.

  336. He will wash

  337. them clean.

  338. He will cleanse

  339. them of their guilt.

  340. And so this is

  341. what John is doing.

  342. He's going around

  343. the countryside

  344. of the Jordan River

  345. proclaiming that

  346. people should repent

  347. of their sins

  348. and be baptized

  349. and in so doing

  350. find God's forgiveness.

  351. And Luke

  352. lets us know

  353. that as John

  354. went about

  355. and did this,

  356. an ancient

  357. word of God

  358. spoken through

  359. the prophet Isaiah

  360. was being fulfilled

  361. right in front

  362. of their eyes.

  363. John did all this

  364. as it is written

  365. in the book

  366. of the words

  367. of Isaiah

  368. the prophet.

  369. And then he quotes

  370. the very words

  371. of Isaiah

  372. written some 700

  373. years before this

  374. and these words

  375. come from

  376. Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  377. A voice of one

  378. calling in the

  379. wilderness.

  380. Prepare the way

  381. for the Lord.

  382. Make straight

  383. paths for him.

  384. Every valley

  385. shall be filled

  386. in.

  387. Every mountain

  388. and hill

  389. made low.

  390. The crooked roads

  391. shall become

  392. straight.

  393. The rough ways

  394. smooth.

  395. And all people

  396. will see

  397. God's salvation.

  398. Now if you go

  399. back in your Bible

  400. to Isaiah

  401. and you look up

  402. this passage

  403. you'll notice

  404. the wording

  405. is a little

  406. different there

  407. and I just

  408. want to address

  409. that briefly.

  410. There are several

  411. reasons for this.

  412. First of all

  413. Luke is writing

  414. this in Greek

  415. but Isaiah

  416. was penned

  417. in Hebrew.

  418. They are two

  419. different languages

  420. and therefore

  421. we expect to see

  422. some differences

  423. because no two

  424. languages have

  425. perfect word

  426. to word

  427. or phrase

  428. to phrase

  429. equivalents

  430. especially when

  431. it comes to

  432. poetry

  433. or figures

  434. of speech

  435. which this

  436. contains.

  437. So that's why

  438. we see a slight

  439. difference

  440. in the wording

  441. especially in the

  442. back half

  443. of the quote.

  444. We see

  445. crooked roads

  446. becoming straight

  447. as a translation

  448. for rough ground

  449. becoming level.

  450. And we see

  451. the it

  452. of Isaiah

    Isaiah 40:5

  453. 40 verse 5

  454. specified

  455. by Luke

  456. as God's

  457. salvation.

  458. These were

  459. translation

  460. decisions

  461. made by those

  462. who produced

  463. the first

  464. Greek translation

  465. of the Old

  466. Testament

  467. known as

  468. the Septuagint

  469. over 100

  470. years before

  471. Jesus was

  472. born.

  473. We also

  474. notice that

  475. Luke feels

  476. free to

  477. paraphrase

  478. and condense

  479. a few lines

  480. of this quote.

  481. He condenses

  482. and paraphrases

  483. Isaiah 40

    Isaiah 40:3

  484. verse 3

  485. make straight

  486. paths for

  487. him

  488. instead of

  489. make straight

  490. in the desert

  491. a highway

  492. for our

  493. God.

  494. And he also

  495. feels free to

  496. leave out the

  497. first line

  498. of Isaiah

    Isaiah 40:5

  499. 40 verse 5.

  500. He just

  501. goes straight

  502. to and all

  503. people will

  504. see

  505. God's salvation.

  506. And so

  507. that's why we

  508. see some

  509. differences here

  510. if we look

  511. back.

  512. But they

  513. shouldn't

  514. concern us

  515. or alarm us

  516. because there's

  517. natural reasons

  518. for these

  519. differences

  520. both in

  521. language

  522. and in

  523. the way

  524. that people

  525. often refer

  526. to or quote

  527. things that

  528. are written

  529. by others.

  530. In addition

  531. to that we

  532. trust and we

  533. believe that

  534. Luke quotes

  535. this the way

  536. that he does

  537. under the

  538. guidance and

  539. inspiration of

  540. the Holy Spirit.

  541. Let's dig

  542. into the meaning

  543. of these words

  544. though.

  545. Isaiah says

  546. a voice of

  547. one calling

  548. in the

  549. wilderness.

  550. What is it

  551. that Isaiah

  552. was prophesying

  553. 700 years

  554. before this?

  555. I mean we

  556. don't have

  557. time to look

  558. at the full

  559. context of

  560. the book of

  561. Isaiah or

  562. even chapter

  563. 40.

  564. But to sum

  565. it up Israel

  566. has been

  567. disobedient to

  568. God and God

  569. has promised

  570. to bring the

  571. punishment on

  572. them that he

  573. had foretold in

  574. the law of

  575. Moses.

  576. But Isaiah

  577. 40 tells of

  578. how God

  579. will again

  580. in the

  581. future comfort

  582. his people

  583. and reveal

  584. himself to

  585. his people

  586. and save

  587. his people

  588. and restore

  589. them.

  590. And these

  591. words of

  592. Isaiah quoted

  593. by Luke tell

  594. of how it

  595. will begin.

  596. It will

  597. begin with

  598. a voice

  599. calling out

  600. or crying

  601. out in

  602. the wilderness.

  603. Luke's

  604. saying that's

  605. what John

  606. the son of

  607. Zachariah

  608. was.

  609. He was

  610. that voice.

  611. Look at the

  612. details of the

  613. prophecy.

  614. What is the

  615. voice crying

  616. out?

  617. What is the

  618. voice saying?

  619. The message

  620. of the

  621. voice

  622. is prepare

  623. the way

  624. for the

  625. Lord.

  626. Make straight

  627. paths for

  628. him.

  629. to put it

  630. in other

  631. words.

  632. Get ready.

  633. The

  634. Lord

  635. God

  636. himself

  637. is coming.

  638. He's

  639. coming

  640. to us.

  641. Let's

  642. prepare

  643. for his

  644. arrival.

  645. Until the

  646. prophecy

  647. foretold

  648. this voice

  649. calling out

  650. in the

  651. wilderness

  652. telling the

  653. people to

  654. get ready

  655. for the

  656. coming

  657. of the

  658. Lord.

  659. And we

  660. should

  661. notice

  662. back in

  663. Isaiah

  664. where the

  665. prophecy

  666. is stated

  667. the

  668. Lord

  669. is the

  670. divine

  671. name

  672. of

  673. God.

  674. Prepare

  675. the way

  676. for

  677. Yahweh.

  678. And what

  679. follows

  680. this statement

  681. is a

  682. metaphorical

  683. poetic way

  684. of describing

  685. how we

  686. should prepare

  687. for his

  688. arrival.

  689. What

  690. should we

  691. do to

  692. get ready?

  693. And

  694. Isaiah

  695. speaks

  696. with the

  697. language of

  698. road

  699. building.

  700. Prepare

  701. the way

  702. for him.

  703. Make

  704. straight

  705. paths

  706. for him.

  707. If we

  708. glance back

  709. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  710. chapter 40,

  711. the original

  712. quote,

  713. the longer

  714. version in

  715. verse 3,

  716. make straight

  717. in the

  718. desert a

  719. highway

  720. for our

  721. God.

  722. The

  723. Lord God

  724. himself is

  725. coming to

  726. visit us

  727. and so

  728. let's get

  729. the road

  730. ready by

  731. which he

  732. will arrive

  733. to us.

  734. And then

  735. the lines

  736. which follow,

  737. we're back

  738. in Luke

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  739. chapter 3

  740. here,

  741. verse 5,

  742. are all

  743. about road

  744. building as

  745. well.

  746. Every valley

  747. shall be

  748. filled in,

  749. every mountain

  750. and hill

  751. made low.

  752. The crooked

  753. road shall

  754. become

  755. straight,

  756. the rough

  757. ways

  758. smooth.

  759. All of

  760. this is

  761. figurative

  762. and poetic

  763. language

  764. which describes

  765. what happens

  766. when you

  767. build a

  768. highway.

  769. The point

  770. of a

  771. highway

  772. is to

  773. make

  774. travel

  775. easy

  776. and fast

  777. from one

  778. place

  779. to another.

  780. And so

  781. rather than

  782. winding the

  783. narrow road

  784. from one

  785. place to

  786. the next,

  787. taking the

  788. easiest path

  789. in the

  790. landscape,

  791. highways are

  792. built in the

  793. most direct

  794. and straight

  795. way possible.

  796. So when you

  797. come to a

  798. dip in the

  799. land or a

  800. valley,

  801. instead of

  802. going around

  803. that dip,

  804. the goal

  805. here is to

  806. make it

  807. faster,

  808. to make it

  809. direct.

  810. So we'll

  811. fill in that

  812. and put the

  813. highway right

  814. through.

  815. if you

  816. want to

  817. travel by

  818. cart or

  819. carriage,

  820. pulled by

  821. an animal

  822. back in

  823. these days,

  824. this is

  825. important.

  826. The road

  827. can only

  828. be so

  829. steep.

  830. You don't

  831. want to

  832. have a

  833. steep valley,

  834. staircase right

  835. in the middle

  836. of the road.

  837. How are you

  838. going to get

  839. down that

  840. with your

  841. animals?

  842. The same

  843. thing applies

  844. when you

  845. come to a

  846. hill or a

  847. mountain.

  848. I mean,

  849. you could

  850. build that

  851. road all

  852. the way

  853. around,

  854. but the

  855. whole point

  856. of a

  857. highway is

  858. for easy,

  859. fast,

  860. direct travel.

  861. And so if

  862. there's a

  863. hill in the

  864. way,

  865. let's flatten

  866. it down.

  867. If there's

  868. a mountain,

  869. let's cut

  870. through it

  871. and make

  872. it low

  873. and level

  874. in the

  875. place where

  876. the road

  877. goes through

  878. because we

  879. don't want

  880. to waste

  881. time getting

  882. from here

  883. to there.

  884. We don't

  885. want to

  886. have a

  887. crooked road

  888. that takes

  889. us farther

  890. out of the

  891. way and

  892. then has to

  893. come all

  894. the way

  895. back.

  896. We want

  897. that road

  898. straight.

  899. Make the

  900. road straight

  901. and make

  902. that road

  903. smooth.

  904. We all

  905. know out

  906. here in

  907. rural Saskatchewan

  908. that those

  909. rough gravel

  910. roads are

  911. just a little

  912. slower and

  913. more difficult

  914. than the

  915. smooth paved

  916. asphalt of

  917. the highway.

  918. All of

  919. this is the

  920. language of

  921. road building

  922. and making

  923. these kinds

  924. of changes

  925. to build

  926. a highway

  927. is a lot

  928. of work.

  929. Why go

  930. to all

  931. this effort?

  932. Why not

  933. just use

  934. the long

  935. and windy

  936. road with

  937. the difficult

  938. sections that

  939. we already

  940. have?

  941. And it

  942. has to do

  943. with the

  944. purpose of

  945. the road.

  946. It has to

  947. do with who's

  948. going to be

  949. traveling on

  950. it.

  951. It has to

  952. do with that

  953. need for

  954. efficient travel

  955. between two

  956. places.

  957. Think about

  958. roads in our

  959. modern times.

  960. roads.

  961. You know

  962. the roads

  963. that just

  964. don't get

  965. a lot of

  966. people traveling

  967. down them?

  968. They're usually

  969. gravel for a

  970. reason.

  971. If it's even

  972. less traveled

  973. than that it

  974. could be a

  975. dirt road and

  976. it could be

  977. almost impassable

  978. in some of

  979. the wet

  980. months.

  981. So the

  982. number of

  983. people that

  984. are going

  985. from here

  986. to there

  987. increases the

  988. importance of

  989. that road or

  990. the goods that

  991. flow along

  992. that road

  993. increases the

  994. importance of

  995. the road and

  996. that's why we

  997. spend hundreds

  998. of millions

  999. of dollars

  1000. adding lanes

  1001. and paving

  1002. and widening

  1003. our major

  1004. highways between

  1005. our major

  1006. cities.

  1007. But we'll

  1008. just let the

  1009. local grader

  1010. do his best

  1011. on that

  1012. country road

  1013. out by where

  1014. all the farms

  1015. are.

  1016. I remember

  1017. when they were

  1018. still twinning

  1019. some of the

  1020. major highways

  1021. in northern

  1022. Alberta up to

  1023. Grand Prairie

  1024. it was a

  1025. massive project

  1026. on some

  1027. stretches.

  1028. The amount

  1029. of dirt that

  1030. had to be

  1031. moved was

  1032. amazing.

  1033. There was all

  1034. kinds of

  1035. heavy machinery

  1036. and equipment

  1037. and there

  1038. were trucks

  1039. coming and

  1040. going constantly

  1041. taking dirt

  1042. from where

  1043. there was too

  1044. much moving

  1045. it over to

  1046. where there

  1047. wasn't enough

  1048. trying to

  1049. level it out

  1050. so that that

  1051. second part

  1052. of the

  1053. twinning

  1054. would be

  1055. level with

  1056. the first.

  1057. Why go to

  1058. all that

  1059. work?

  1060. Because the

  1061. growing amount

  1062. of traffic

  1063. on that road

  1064. required it.

  1065. Industry

  1066. which pays

  1067. the bills

  1068. needs those

  1069. major arteries

  1070. to move

  1071. trees or

  1072. oil or

  1073. whatever

  1074. equipment,

  1075. parts,

  1076. food,

  1077. fuel.

  1078. people,

  1079. I'm not

  1080. an expert

  1081. in it by

  1082. any means,

  1083. but I

  1084. loved learning

  1085. a little bit

  1086. about the

  1087. challenges

  1088. involved with

  1089. punching the

  1090. railway through

  1091. the Rockies

  1092. to the west

  1093. coast of

  1094. Canada.

  1095. Insane

  1096. amounts of

  1097. work had

  1098. to be done

  1099. blasting

  1100. through solid

  1101. rock of

  1102. the mountains

  1103. and carefully

  1104. planned tunnels

  1105. and switchbacks.

  1106. Why go to

  1107. all that

  1108. trouble?

  1109. Again,

  1110. because of the

  1111. importance of

  1112. connecting that

  1113. the western

  1114. coast with

  1115. the rest

  1116. of the

  1117. country.

  1118. It's a

  1119. massive amount

  1120. of work,

  1121. but the

  1122. payoff is

  1123. going to

  1124. far outweigh

  1125. that.

  1126. But now

  1127. let's look

  1128. at the

  1129. text.

  1130. What's he

  1131. talking about?

  1132. What's the

  1133. importance here?

  1134. What's so

  1135. significant that

  1136. we need to

  1137. go about

  1138. making massive

  1139. changes in

  1140. the landscape

  1141. to build a

  1142. highway?

  1143. What's so

  1144. important here

  1145. is that God

  1146. himself is

  1147. coming?

  1148. God himself

  1149. is coming

  1150. to his

  1151. people.

  1152. The days

  1153. of kings

  1154. and queens

  1155. are mostly

  1156. behind us,

  1157. but we still

  1158. use the phrase

  1159. once in a

  1160. while,

  1161. roll out

  1162. the red

  1163. carpet.

  1164. Back in the

  1165. day, you

  1166. know, if the

  1167. king of your

  1168. country was

  1169. coming to

  1170. visit your

  1171. little town,

  1172. would you

  1173. not make

  1174. special

  1175. preparations?

  1176. Would you

  1177. not touch

  1178. things up a

  1179. little bit?

  1180. Maybe he's

  1181. going to stay

  1182. at the

  1183. local inn.

  1184. Let's do

  1185. something about

  1186. this lumpy,

  1187. dirty, muddy

  1188. parking lot.

  1189. You know, we're

  1190. going to make

  1191. that path smooth

  1192. for him.

  1193. We're going to

  1194. fix it up so

  1195. that when he

  1196. comes, he

  1197. doesn't have to

  1198. walk and get

  1199. his feet all

  1200. muddy and

  1201. dirty between

  1202. his carriage and

  1203. the hotel.

  1204. Queen Elizabeth

  1205. came to

  1206. visit in

  1207. Regina in

  1208. 2005 and

  1209. my parents

  1210. worked downtown

  1211. at the time.

  1212. My mom

  1213. noticed that

  1214. they spray

  1215. painted the

  1216. lawn of the

  1217. Sask Hotel

  1218. green before

  1219. she arrived.

  1220. I mean, it

  1221. was probably

  1222. more like a

  1223. liquid dye or

  1224. something, but

  1225. you know, we

  1226. do this sort

  1227. of thing to

  1228. honor royalty,

  1229. people of

  1230. great importance

  1231. to us.

  1232. I mean, can

  1233. you imagine

  1234. the queen

  1235. coming over

  1236. from Europe

  1237. and then

  1238. staying at a

  1239. hotel with

  1240. all this

  1241. crispy brown

  1242. grass?

  1243. Like, don't

  1244. they have

  1245. water here?

  1246. Fertilizer?

  1247. Is this the

  1248. best you could

  1249. do?

  1250. But these

  1251. preparations

  1252. should go far

  1253. beyond that.

  1254. This is not

  1255. about some

  1256. human king or

  1257. queen coming.

  1258. It's about

  1259. God himself

  1260. coming to

  1261. us.

  1262. It's the

  1263. Lord.

  1264. It's the

  1265. Almighty, the

  1266. creator of

  1267. heaven and

  1268. earth.

  1269. Prepare the

  1270. way for him.

  1271. So absolutely,

  1272. we should roll

  1273. out the red

  1274. carpet.

  1275. Absolutely, let's

  1276. knock that

  1277. mountain down.

  1278. Let's raise

  1279. that valley up.

  1280. Let's make a

  1281. smooth highway,

  1282. direct travel

  1283. for him to

  1284. arrive on.

  1285. But hold on a

  1286. second.

  1287. What does that

  1288. even mean?

  1289. In what way

  1290. is God

  1291. coming?

  1292. As we'll see

  1293. next week,

  1294. John declared

  1295. the arrival

  1296. of Jesus

  1297. because in

  1298. Jesus,

  1299. God,

  1300. the Lord,

  1301. has come

  1302. to us.

  1303. Jesus

  1304. himself is

  1305. the Lord

  1306. incarnate,

  1307. enfleshed,

  1308. come to

  1309. visit,

  1310. come to

  1311. live among

  1312. us.

  1313. It's maybe a

  1314. different way

  1315. than people

  1316. were expecting.

  1317. So now,

  1318. how do we get

  1319. ready for him?

  1320. How do we make

  1321. preparations?

  1322. In what sense

  1323. are we to

  1324. fill in the

  1325. valleys and

  1326. flatten the

  1327. mountains and

  1328. straighten the

  1329. crooked and

  1330. smooth the

  1331. rough places?

  1332. Well, we need

  1333. only to look

  1334. down the

  1335. page at

  1336. what John

  1337. told the

  1338. people to

  1339. do, to

  1340. understand what

  1341. kinds of

  1342. changes Isaiah

  1343. is talking

  1344. about with

  1345. his highway

  1346. building

  1347. metaphor.

  1348. And we see

  1349. very quickly

  1350. here that

  1351. Isaiah and

  1352. John are not

  1353. talking about

  1354. massive changes

  1355. to the

  1356. landscape in

  1357. Israel.

  1358. They're talking

  1359. about massive

  1360. changes to

  1361. the landscape

  1362. of our

  1363. lives.

  1364. In other

  1365. words,

  1366. preparations

  1367. need to be

  1368. made for

  1369. the Lord's

  1370. coming, but

  1371. they don't

  1372. involve changes

  1373. to the

  1374. earth, but

  1375. changes to

  1376. our hearts.

  1377. This brings

  1378. us back to

  1379. that key word

  1380. that we heard

  1381. earlier,

  1382. repentance.

  1383. There's a

  1384. major need

  1385. for changes

  1386. to be made

  1387. to get

  1388. ready for

  1389. God to

  1390. come to

  1391. us, to

  1392. prepare

  1393. ourselves to

  1394. welcome the

  1395. Lord.

  1396. These changes

  1397. must start in

  1398. here, with a

  1399. turning away

  1400. from sin and

  1401. self toward

  1402. God.

  1403. truthfully,

  1404. moving actual

  1405. mountains and

  1406. filling actual

  1407. valleys would

  1408. be easier

  1409. because we

  1410. have some

  1411. pretty tall

  1412. mountains in

  1413. here.

  1414. We have some

  1415. pretty low

  1416. valleys in

  1417. here.

  1418. We have some

  1419. pretty crooked

  1420. things in

  1421. here.

  1422. Some pretty

  1423. rough places

  1424. which need

  1425. to be

  1426. smooth.

  1427. But let's

  1428. not miss the

  1429. last line

  1430. quoted of

  1431. Isaiah's

  1432. prophecy.

  1433. A voice is

  1434. going to cry

  1435. out in the

  1436. wilderness for

  1437. preparations to

  1438. be made, to

  1439. get ready for

  1440. the coming of

  1441. the Lord.

  1442. Some massive

  1443. changes need to

  1444. happen to

  1445. welcome him,

  1446. and all

  1447. people will

  1448. see God's

  1449. salvation.

  1450. All people

  1451. will see

  1452. God's

  1453. salvation.

  1454. Isn't that

  1455. so obviously

  1456. what the

  1457. story of

  1458. Jesus is

  1459. all about?

  1460. God's

  1461. saving us.

  1462. And at the

  1463. very center of

  1464. his plan to

  1465. save us is

  1466. this man

  1467. whom we're

  1468. about to hear

  1469. next week,

  1470. whom John

  1471. is declaring,

  1472. Jesus.

  1473. never has

  1474. God's

  1475. salvation been

  1476. so visible,

  1477. so tangible,

  1478. so flesh and

  1479. blood, and

  1480. yet so

  1481. powerful and

  1482. divine.

  1483. God's

  1484. salvation is

  1485. not just a

  1486. plan hatched

  1487. by God

  1488. before the

  1489. world began.

  1490. His salvation

  1491. is not just a

  1492. concept of

  1493. theology.

  1494. His salvation

  1495. is not some

  1496. invisible

  1497. intervention that

  1498. cannot be

  1499. explained at

  1500. all or seen

  1501. or understood.

  1502. God's salvation

  1503. is the person

  1504. of Jesus

  1505. Christ who

  1506. all may see.

  1507. Think about

  1508. this.

  1509. He's going to

  1510. walk through

  1511. their streets,

  1512. travel their

  1513. country roads.

  1514. The young

  1515. and the old

  1516. will see him.

  1517. The rich

  1518. and the poor

  1519. will see him.

  1520. and he's

  1521. going to

  1522. deliver people

  1523. from illnesses

  1524. and injuries

  1525. and even

  1526. birth defects

  1527. that have

  1528. plagued them

  1529. for years

  1530. and he's

  1531. going to do

  1532. even more

  1533. than that.

  1534. He's going

  1535. to save

  1536. people from

  1537. their sins,

  1538. from their

  1539. guilt.

  1540. All people

  1541. will see

  1542. God's

  1543. salvation.

  1544. That's what

  1545. Isaiah declared

  1546. 700 years

  1547. before this.

  1548. And now

  1549. the voice

  1550. has come,

  1551. Luke saying,

  1552. John

  1553. was that

  1554. voice letting

  1555. us know

  1556. that the

  1557. time is

  1558. here.

  1559. Next Sunday

  1560. we're going

  1561. to hear some

  1562. of the actual

  1563. words of

  1564. John as

  1565. he was doing

  1566. this preaching

  1567. of repentance,

  1568. as he was

  1569. preparing the

  1570. people for

  1571. the coming

  1572. of the Lord.

  1573. And let me

  1574. warn you,

  1575. John's

  1576. words,

  1577. which as we

  1578. heard,

  1579. they came

  1580. from God.

  1581. The word

  1582. of God

  1583. came to

  1584. John.

  1585. John's

  1586. words are

  1587. not for the

  1588. faint of

  1589. heart.

  1590. If you

  1591. want to

  1592. talk about

  1593. hellfire and

  1594. brimstone

  1595. preaching,

  1596. John's

  1597. preaching has

  1598. some of

  1599. that in

  1600. it for

  1601. sure.

  1602. But

  1603. alongside of

  1604. that is

  1605. the greatest

  1606. news that

  1607. our world

  1608. has ever

  1609. heard,

  1610. which John

  1611. declared.

  1612. More on

  1613. that next

  1614. Sunday.

  1615. For today,

  1616. I wonder

  1617. if you can

  1618. begin to

  1619. imagine

  1620. yourself

  1621. there in

  1622. the land

  1623. of Israel

  1624. all those

  1625. years ago.

  1626. Can you

  1627. imagine

  1628. everybody in

  1629. your country

  1630. flocking

  1631. out to

  1632. this remote

  1633. place by

  1634. the river

  1635. to hear

  1636. this man

  1637. whom they

  1638. realized many

  1639. was a

  1640. prophet?

  1641. can you

  1642. imagine him

  1643. preaching to

  1644. you as

  1645. you stand

  1646. on the

  1647. shore?

  1648. Can you

  1649. imagine him

  1650. saying,

  1651. come down

  1652. here into

  1653. the water,

  1654. confess your

  1655. sins to

  1656. God.

  1657. You have

  1658. sinned against

  1659. him.

  1660. We all

  1661. have,

  1662. but God

  1663. is eager

  1664. and willing

  1665. to forgive

  1666. you.

  1667. repent,

  1668. come,

  1669. be cleansed,

  1670. be washed

  1671. of all

  1672. your guilt.

  1673. God is

  1674. merciful.

  1675. He is

  1676. mighty to

  1677. save.

  1678. He's about

  1679. to come

  1680. to us

  1681. just as

  1682. he said

  1683. long ago.

  1684. His great

  1685. salvation is

  1686. about to

  1687. appear.

  1688. His kingdom

  1689. is near.

  1690. Would you

  1691. go down

  1692. into the

  1693. water?

  1694. would you

  1695. confess?

  1696. Would you

  1697. seek God's

  1698. forgiveness?

  1699. Would you

  1700. be baptized

  1701. in the

  1702. water?

  1703. These

  1704. things are

  1705. not just

  1706. what people

  1707. needed to

  1708. do way

  1709. back then.

  1710. This

  1711. thing of

  1712. repentance

  1713. is the

  1714. thing that

  1715. we all

  1716. need to

  1717. do.

  1718. Even

  1719. today,

  1720. even

  1721. now,

  1722. in order

  1723. to

  1724. prepare

  1725. ourselves

  1726. to

  1727. receive

  1728. the

  1729. Lord

  1730. Jesus.

  1731. Have you

  1732. repented?

  1733. Have you

  1734. confessed

  1735. your sins

  1736. to God?

  1737. Have you

  1738. sought

  1739. his

  1740. forgiveness?

  1741. Many

  1742. of us

  1743. in this

  1744. room have

  1745. done

  1746. this.

  1747. But if

  1748. you haven't,

  1749. God is

  1750. waiting for

  1751. you to

  1752. do

  1753. this.

  1754. Jesus

  1755. himself

  1756. said that

  1757. God is

  1758. waiting like

  1759. a loving

  1760. father

  1761. with his

  1762. arms wide

  1763. open,

  1764. waiting for

  1765. you to

  1766. come

  1767. home.

  1768. Have you

  1769. repented?

  1770. Have you

  1771. come

  1772. home?

  1773. all of

  1774. this

  1775. sweet,

  1776. powerful,

  1777. wonderful

  1778. forgiveness

  1779. that's

  1780. offered

  1781. comes

  1782. through

  1783. Jesus

  1784. Christ.

  1785. So I

  1786. want to

  1787. urge you,

  1788. if you

  1789. haven't done

  1790. this,

  1791. don't wait

  1792. until it's

  1793. too late

  1794. to make

  1795. your peace

  1796. with God.

  1797. as we're

  1798. going to

  1799. hear next

  1800. Sunday

  1801. from the

  1802. words of

  1803. John,

  1804. there is

  1805. a too

  1806. late.

  1807. There is

  1808. a moment

  1809. that comes

  1810. when God

  1811. says,

  1812. I've

  1813. given you

  1814. ample

  1815. opportunity

  1816. and time

  1817. and now

  1818. you're going

  1819. to get

  1820. what you

  1821. deserve

  1822. because I

  1823. am just.

  1824. There is

  1825. a too

  1826. late for

  1827. those who

  1828. ignore God's

  1829. mercy.

  1830. And so I

  1831. want to

  1832. urge you,

  1833. just as

  1834. John did,

  1835. if you

  1836. haven't done

  1837. this,

  1838. repent and

  1839. believe the

  1840. good news

  1841. that God

  1842. is eager

  1843. and willing

  1844. to forgive

  1845. you.

  1846. He desires

  1847. to save.

  1848. He desires

  1849. us to be

  1850. washed clean

  1851. as the

  1852. baptism points

  1853. to.

  1854. And so

  1855. come to

  1856. him,

  1857. call out

  1858. to him

  1859. if you

  1860. haven't

  1861. done

  1862. that

  1863. already.

  1864. Let's

  1865. pray.

  1866. Father in

  1867. heaven,

  1868. we thank

  1869. you for

  1870. the chance

  1871. to know

  1872. what happened

  1873. in the days

  1874. leading up

  1875. to your

  1876. son revealing

  1877. himself to

  1878. the whole

  1879. nation.

  1880. Amen.

  1881. Amen.

  1882. Amen.

  1883. for some

  1884. of us

  1885. it's

  1886. maybe not

  1887. the message

  1888. we want

  1889. to hear.

  1890. Repent.

  1891. But I

  1892. pray that

  1893. you would

  1894. help us,

  1895. Lord,

  1896. for those

  1897. who haven't

  1898. done it,

  1899. that you

  1900. would help

  1901. them to

  1902. humbly

  1903. bow before

  1904. you and

  1905. come to

  1906. you.

  1907. and for

  1908. those of

  1909. us who

  1910. have,

  1911. Lord,

  1912. I pray

  1913. that we

  1914. would

  1915. remember

  1916. that we

  1917. live

  1918. because of

  1919. your mercy,

  1920. your grace,

  1921. your kindness,

  1922. your eagerness

  1923. to forgive.

  1924. love.

  1925. We thank

  1926. you for

  1927. that,

  1928. Lord.

  1929. I pray

  1930. that we

  1931. wouldn't be

  1932. ashamed of

  1933. these words

  1934. and this

  1935. message,

  1936. which was

  1937. your message

  1938. through John.

  1939. Lord,

  1940. I even

  1941. pray that

  1942. we would

  1943. be willing

  1944. to speak

  1945. these words

  1946. to the

  1947. people around

  1948. us.

  1949. Lord,

  1950. we know

  1951. it's not

  1952. comfortable,

  1953. we know

  1954. it's not

  1955. popular,

  1956. but these

  1957. are the

  1958. words that

  1959. prepare

  1960. people,

  1961. that get

  1962. our hearts

  1963. ready

  1964. for

  1965. salvation's

  1966. arrival.

  1967. Give us

  1968. courage,

  1969. Lord,

  1970. to speak

  1971. them.

  1972. I pray

  1973. this in

  1974. your name.

  1975. Amen.
