  1. All right, we're pressing on with Jesus' story in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  2. And if you have your Bible with you, please open it up.

  3. We're going to be picking it up here in verse 31.

  4. Last Sunday, we saw how Jesus was outright rejected by his hometown of Nazareth.

  5. We heard about how he was received with excitement and honor in the synagogues of many other towns in Galilee.

  6. But Nazareth was different.

  7. They were so furious that they tried to kill him.

  8. And we noticed in the dialogue there in Nazareth a reference to what Jesus had done in Capernaum.

  9. Jesus said, and you will tell me, do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.

  10. Well, now as we come down to verse 31, I believe Luke circles back to tell us about what happened in Capernaum.

  11. My usual translation reads, then he went down to Capernaum.

  12. This is verse 31.

  13. And that word then kind of implies that there is a sequence.

  14. First Nazareth and then Capernaum.

  15. But a closer look at the language suggests that maybe that's an over-translation.

  16. This is another translation.

  17. And he went down to Capernaum.

  18. And that's, I think, important.

  19. I don't know that sequence is intended by Luke

  20. because of what we heard last week about how this may be a little bit out of order here.

  21. Let's just pause for a moment and consider why the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke,

  22. sometimes present things in different orders.

  23. You don't have to read too much while comparing them to notice the differences.

  24. Take Mark, for example.

  25. He has Jesus calling his first disciples right at the beginning of his ministry,

  26. even before what we're about to read today.

  27. Luke doesn't talk about Jesus calling his first disciples

  28. until after what we're about to read today.

  29. We're still going to get to it in chapter 5 next week.

  30. Another example, if we look at our passage for today,

  31. we're going to hear about an exorcism and a healing of a mother-in-law.

  32. Here in Luke, they're just a verse apart.

  33. And yet in the Gospel of Matthew, the entire Sermon on the Mount,

  34. multiple chapters is put in between these two things in his Gospel.

  35. Here's the takeaway.

  36. There's more than one true way to tell a story.

  37. A strict timeline is one option.

  38. And generally, the Gospels do stay chronological.

  39. Yet each writer at times may adjust the order in the way that they tell the story

  40. in order to shape the account and to tell the story in the way that makes the most sense to them.

  41. Scholars largely agree that Mark is probably the most chronological out of the three synoptic Gospels.

  42. And that fits with his brief and less detailed way of telling things.

  43. Matthew, on the other hand, sometimes groups material by type and by theme.

  44. We see all the parables of the kingdom grouped together in some places.

  45. We see the religious leaders' dialogue with Jesus, all grouped in one section, and some other things.

  46. Luke is similar to Matthew as well.

  47. Now, his account is orderly, and yet he is selective.

  48. Sometimes he tweaks the sequence to highlight a particular theme or to maintain a particular focus.

  49. So far in Luke, we've seen that the focus is on Jesus and his identity.

  50. And then, as we've seen in the last couple weeks, it's now on Jesus' message

  51. and people's response to that message.

  52. And so, we're going to hear about the miracles, we're going to hear about the disciples,

  53. but Luke wants us to hear about these things first.

  54. This shouldn't trouble us.

  55. I mean, even from our own experience, we know that there's more than one way

  56. to accurately and faithfully give an account of what happened in the past.

  57. Especially if it was something where, you know, it was a very full and busy time in our lives.

  58. A lot of back and forth as Jesus' ministry was.

  59. But back to the story here.

  60. We're in verse 31.

  61. And Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee.

  62. And on the Sabbath, he taught the people.

  63. They were amazed at his teaching because his words had authority.

  64. So, the people of Capernaum have a completely different response than the people of Nazareth.

  65. And Jesus kind of does the same thing, it appears.

  66. Just like he did in Nazareth, he goes into the synagogue in Capernaum.

  67. And he begins to teach.

  68. Luke says that the people there in Capernaum were amazed at his teaching.

  69. That word amazed has become a very flat word in English today.

  70. We use it about almost everything.

  71. Utterly astonished.

  72. Perhaps better captures the meaning.

  73. Astounded.

  74. Overwhelmed.

  75. Floored.

  76. There's a sense of shock in this amazement.

  77. Why?

  78. Luke says it's because his words had authority.

  79. What kind of authority did Jesus' words have that caused this reaction by the people?

  80. Well, Luke's about to tell us what they heard that day from Jesus.

  81. Verse 33.

  82. In the synagogue, there was a man possessed by a demon.

  83. An impure spirit.

  84. He cried out at the top of his voice.

  85. Go away!

  86. What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

  87. Have you come to destroy us?

  88. I know who you are.

  89. The Holy One of God.

  90. Can you imagine this moment?

  91. I mean, imagine.

  92. Here you are, sitting in church.

  93. Somebody just...

  94. I almost thought about asking someone to do this in the midst of the sermon here, but I thought, that might be a bit much.

  95. How would you feel if somebody just stood up and started shouting this in the middle of the sermon?

  96. Maybe the hair on the back of your neck would be standing.

  97. And look at the words that this man is shouting.

  98. Looking at his words alone, we see that he is repulsed by Jesus.

  99. Go away!

  100. He shouts.

  101. What do you want with us?

  102. Have you come to destroy us?

  103. Who's the us?

  104. Is anybody else in the room thinking the same thing?

  105. This man speaks using a strange mix of plural and singular pronouns.

  106. Which fits the description that he was possessed by a demon.

  107. Jesus' words in Nazareth made the people furious.

  108. But this is something totally different here.

  109. There is, Luke tells us, an impure, unclean spirit in the man.

  110. A demon.

  111. A demon.

  112. And if this is something that you've never heard of before, demons in the Bible are basically fallen angels.

  113. And they roam to and fro deceiving and oppressing and manipulating and trying to do harm to people.

  114. The reaction of this demon.

  115. The reaction of this demon to Jesus' words and to his presence is shocking.

  116. The demon wants Jesus to go away, to get away from him.

  117. Could it be that the man himself was engaged in some kind of internal battle with this evil spirit?

  118. And had come into the synagogue to seek help from Jesus against the will of this evil spirit.

  119. And then this demon, it seems, goes ballistic.

  120. Can you hear the fear in its voice?

  121. Have you come to destroy us?

  122. Now why would this demon, who's been having his way with this poor man,

  123. why would this demon have cause to fear Jesus?

  124. Why would this demon fear destruction from Jesus?

  125. Why would this demon fear?

  126. Why would this demon fear?

  127. Why would this demon fear?

  128. Why would this demon fear?

  129. And this demon knows it.

  130. Jesus has the power to destroy this corrupt, fallen creature.

  131. And the demon knows it.

  132. How does Jesus respond in this moment?

  133. Verse 35.

  134. Be quiet, Jesus said, stir.

  135. Come out of him.

  136. And we'll put a more literal wording on the screen again here.

  137. And Jesus rebuked it, saying,

  138. Be silent and come out from him.

  139. Note the word rebuked.

  140. Then the demon threw the man down before them all

  141. and came out without injuring him.

  142. All the people were amazed, astonished, and said to each other,

  143. What words these are!

  144. With authority and power, he gives orders, commands, impure spirits,

  145. and they come out?

  146. And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding area.

  147. So let's go back to that question that we asked at the top.

  148. What did Luke mean when he said

  149. that they were astonished at Jesus' teaching

  150. because his words had authority?

  151. Or, let me ask it this way.

  152. Why didn't the demon simply refuse

  153. to do what Jesus said?

  154. Why didn't it just go on shouting?

  155. Why did it comply and come out of the man?

  156. It had to.

  157. It had to.

  158. The demon complied

  159. because it had to.

  160. It did not refuse.

  161. Jesus' words

  162. forced it to comply

  163. and leave the man.

  164. This is the kind of authority

  165. and power

  166. Jesus' words had.

  167. That's what astonished the people

  168. that day.

  169. Luke says,

  170. The news spread throughout the surrounding area.

  171. And this issue of authority

  172. and power in Jesus' words

  173. brings to mind

  174. another moment

  175. that Luke wants to tell us about.

  176. Verse 38.

  177. Jesus left the synagogue

  178. and went to the home of Simon.

  179. We get the sense that this is later that same day.

  180. Now Simon's mother-in-law

  181. was suffering from a high fever

  182. and they asked Jesus

  183. to help her.

  184. Who's Simon?

  185. This is maybe another clue

  186. that Luke has his material

  187. arranged a little differently

  188. and likely not chronologically

  189. at this moment.

  190. If we look to all three

  191. of the other Gospels

  192. we see that Jesus began

  193. to call his disciples

  194. right away

  195. after his baptism.

  196. And Simon was one of them

  197. to whom Jesus gave the name Peter.

  198. One of the twelve disciples.

  199. But Luke at this point

  200. has just been so focused on Jesus

  201. as a teacher

  202. and a preacher

  203. and the response of the people

  204. that he's just getting

  205. to the miracles now.

  206. And one of the early miracles

  207. was this healing

  208. of Simon's mother-in-law.

  209. And we're going to hear more

  210. about Simon

  211. and who he was

  212. in the next chapter.

  213. Luke's going to tell us

  214. all about him

  215. and where it started

  216. with Simon Peter.

  217. But we learn from this miracle

  218. here in verse 38

  219. that Simon Peter was married.

  220. Luke says that Simon's mother-in-law

  221. so his wife's mother

  222. was at the home of Simon.

  223. The picture we get here

  224. is that Simon is already

  225. a follower of Jesus

  226. and he brings Jesus back

  227. to his house in Capernaum.

  228. And there at his house

  229. is Simon's wife

  230. and his wife's mother.

  231. And Luke says

  232. that she was suffering

  233. from a high fever.

  234. Note the kind of fever.

  235. Not just a little feverish

  236. but a great fever.

  237. A high fever.

  238. So you can imagine her there

  239. lying in bed

  240. shivering

  241. and sweating

  242. and pale

  243. and weak

  244. just like anyone

  245. with a high fever is.

  246. And they

  247. presumably

  248. Simon and his brother Andrew

  249. asked Jesus

  250. to help her.

  251. verse 39.

  252. So Jesus bent over her

  253. and rebuked

  254. the fever

  255. and it left her.

  256. She got up

  257. at once

  258. and began

  259. to wait on them.

  260. Notice how

  261. Jesus heals her.

  262. Luke says

  263. he rebuked.

  264. There it is again.

  265. Same word.

  266. He rebuked

  267. the fever

  268. and it left her.

  269. Also notice

  270. how quickly

  271. she went from

  272. lying in bed

  273. shivering

  274. and sweating

  275. pale and weak

  276. to up and about

  277. serving the guests.

  278. She got up

  279. at once.

  280. Luke is actually

  281. quite emphatic

  282. about this.

  283. This translation

  284. has kind of

  285. smoothed this sentence

  286. out a bit

  287. but quite literally

  288. immediately

  289. rising up

  290. she began

  291. to serve them.

  292. this is clearly

  293. a miracle

  294. and while

  295. Jesus

  296. will heal

  297. far more

  298. devastating

  299. illnesses

  300. than this

  301. it's still

  302. astonishing

  303. and especially

  304. the way

  305. that Jesus

  306. does it.

  307. He rebuked

  308. the fever

  309. and it

  310. left her.

  311. What's a fever?

  312. I'm not a

  313. medical expert

  314. or a doctor

  315. but from my

  316. understanding

  317. a fever

  318. is an immune

  319. system response

  320. of the body

  321. which attempts

  322. to fight off

  323. infection

  324. caused by

  325. viruses

  326. or bacteria

  327. by raising

  328. the internal

  329. temperature

  330. of the body

  331. in an effort

  332. to hinder

  333. or kill

  334. the bacteria

  335. or viruses.

  336. So what exactly

  337. did Jesus

  338. rebuke?

  339. With the demon

  340. it makes sense

  341. and you know

  342. it's a sentient

  343. self-aware

  344. creature

  345. with hearing

  346. the ability

  347. to speak

  348. and to reason

  349. it has a will

  350. it has a mind

  351. it can act

  352. but this sickness

  353. on the other hand

  354. is just not like that.

  355. viruses

  356. and bacteria

  357. don't have brains

  358. they don't have ears

  359. they don't understand

  360. or speak

  361. human language

  362. the fever

  363. itself

  364. is the body's

  365. God-given

  366. defense mechanism

  367. and yet

  368. Jesus

  369. it says

  370. rebuked

  371. the fever

  372. he rebuked

  373. the sickness

  374. in her body

  375. and it complied

  376. I can't help

  377. but think

  378. the same words

  379. that they said

  380. in the synagogue

  381. earlier

  382. like what words

  383. are these

  384. with authority

  385. and power

  386. he commands

  387. sicknesses

  388. and they cease

  389. maybe it seems

  390. that the sickness

  391. in your body

  392. and he says

  393. stop it

  394. and instantly

  395. it's like you

  396. were never sick

  397. before

  398. you can sit

  399. up

  400. go on your

  401. way

  402. this is just

  403. the beginning

  404. this is just

  405. the prelude

  406. for the night

  407. the first healing

  408. of the evening

  409. verse 40

  410. at sunset

  411. the people

  412. brought to

  413. Jesus

  414. all who

  415. had various

  416. kinds of

  417. sickness

  418. and laying

  419. his hands

  420. on each

  421. one

  422. he healed

  423. them

  424. moreover

  425. demons

  426. came out

  427. of many

  428. people

  429. shouting

  430. you are

  431. the son

  432. of God

  433. but he

  434. rebuked

  435. them

  436. and would

  437. not allow

  438. them to

  439. speak

  440. because

  441. they knew

  442. he was

  443. the Messiah

  444. what a

  445. night

  446. can you

  447. imagine

  448. this

  449. the sun

  450. is going

  451. down

  452. people

  453. are lined

  454. up

  455. all crowded

  456. around

  457. the house

  458. of Simon

  459. Peter

  460. the fisherman

  461. in Capernaum

  462. by now

  463. word spread

  464. rapidly

  465. what Jesus

  466. did earlier

  467. in the day

  468. at the synagogue

  469. not to mention

  470. how it's been

  471. traveling all

  472. over the region

  473. from his

  474. other visits

  475. to other

  476. towns

  477. and the

  478. whole town

  479. it seems

  480. and surrounding

  481. areas

  482. knocking on

  483. the door

  484. and they've

  485. brought all

  486. their sick

  487. loved ones

  488. and their

  489. friends

  490. to be

  491. healed

  492. by Jesus

  493. and he

  494. greets them

  495. one by

  496. one

  497. laying his

  498. hands

  499. on them

  500. and he

  501. heals

  502. them

  503. all of

  504. them

  505. Luke

  506. very

  507. specifically

  508. mentions

  509. that there

  510. were

  511. various

  512. kinds

  513. of

  514. sicknesses

  515. all

  516. kinds

  517. !

  518. and not

  519. only

  520. sicknesses

  521. but suddenly

  522. you know

  523. it's like

  524. the people

  525. who knew

  526. of others

  527. that were

  528. afflicted

  529. by demons

  530. brought

  531. them as

  532. well

  533. demons

  534. came out

  535. of many

  536. people

  537. that night

  538. says Luke

  539. and the

  540. demons

  541. themselves

  542. were shouting

  543. you are

  544. the son

  545. of God

  546. just like

  547. the guy

  548. earlier in

  549. the day

  550. at the

  551. synagogue

  552. they're

  553. declaring

  554. what they

  555. know

  556. about

  557. Jesus

  558. why they

  559. shout

  560. this

  561. it doesn't

  562. say

  563. are they

  564. trying to

  565. blow

  566. Jesus

  567. cover

  568. or reveal

  569. his

  570. identity

  571. before

  572. the time

  573. or are

  574. they just

  575. terrified

  576. and can't

  577. help but

  578. shout out

  579. the identity

  580. of the one

  581. that they

  582. feel

  583. threatened

  584. by

  585. and again

  586. we read

  587. the same

  588. word

  589. Jesus

  590. rebuked

  591. them

  592. the many

  593. demons

  594. and would

  595. not

  596. allow

  597. them

  598. to speak

  599. here's an

  600. even clearer

  601. question

  602. answer to

  603. the question

  604. I asked

  605. earlier

  606. why don't

  607. they just

  608. ignore

  609. Jesus

  610. why don't

  611. they just

  612. defy

  613. Jesus

  614. and keep

  615. on hollering

  616. and stay

  617. in the

  618. person

  619. continue

  620. to torment

  621. them

  622. because

  623. they

  624. can't

  625. Jesus

  626. with his

  627. rebuke

  628. with his

  629. words

  630. does not

  631. allow

  632. them

  633. to speak

  634. who can

  635. restrain

  636. a fallen

  637. angel

  638. with

  639. mere

  640. words

  641. let the

  642. demons

  643. themselves

  644. tell you

  645. the answer

  646. the son

  647. of God

  648. Luke says

  649. that Jesus

  650. silenced them

  651. because they

  652. knew he was

  653. the Christ

  654. the Messiah

  655. it would

  656. seem that

  657. there's some

  658. sort of

  659. divine plan

  660. or timeline

  661. of God

  662. by which

  663. Jesus will

  664. be revealed

  665. to the

  666. people as

  667. being the

  668. Messiah

  669. and who

  670. knows

  671. maybe the

  672. demons are

  673. trying to

  674. blurt it

  675. out and

  676. publicly

  677. make it

  678. known before

  679. the appointed

  680. time and

  681. somehow hinder

  682. the plan

  683. of God

  684. either way

  685. Jesus silences

  686. them

  687. he muzzles

  688. them

  689. with his

  690. rebuke

  691. now I know

  692. this may

  693. sound strange

  694. but

  695. put yourself

  696. in the

  697. demon's

  698. shoes

  699. for a

  700. moment

  701. can you

  702. imagine

  703. being told

  704. by Jesus

  705. to just

  706. shut up

  707. and not

  708. even being

  709. able

  710. to speak

  711. out in

  712. defiance

  713. against

  714. him

  715. try as

  716. you may

  717. you're

  718. driven out

  719. of this

  720. man or

  721. woman or

  722. child that

  723. you've been

  724. tormenting

  725. and being a

  726. wicked creature

  727. you're probably

  728. going to seek

  729. someone else

  730. to pray

  731. upon

  732. but even

  733. after this

  734. gathering is

  735. over

  736. there is

  737. this power

  738. holding your

  739. tongue

  740. keeping you

  741. from saying

  742. anything

  743. about the

  744. true identity

  745. of this

  746. man from

  747. Nazareth

  748. who just

  749. gave you

  750. the royal

  751. smackdown

  752. what power

  753. is this

  754. what authority

  755. is this

  756. it's the

  757. power and

  758. authority of

  759. God himself

  760. which Jesus

  761. has

  762. and speaks

  763. with

  764. verse 42

  765. at daybreak

  766. Jesus went

  767. out to a

  768. solitary

  769. place

  770. the people

  771. were looking

  772. for him

  773. and when

  774. they came

  775. to where

  776. he was

  777. they tried

  778. to keep

  779. him from

  780. leaving

  781. them

  782. but he

  783. said I

  784. must

  785. proclaim

  786. the good

  787. news of

  788. the kingdom

  789. of God

  790. to the

  791. other

  792. towns

  793. also

  794. because

  795. that is

  796. why I

  797. was sent

  798. and he

  799. kept on

  800. preaching

  801. in the

  802. synagogues

  803. you get

  804. the sense

  805. that all

  806. of this

  807. lasted

  808. well into

  809. the night

  810. that eventually

  811. everybody went

  812. home

  813. and whether

  814. anybody slept

  815. or not

  816. that night

  817. it doesn't

  818. say but

  819. Jesus sneaks

  820. away at the

  821. first crack

  822. of dawn

  823. to a place

  824. where there

  825. is nobody

  826. and Mark

  827. adds the

  828. detail in

  829. his gospel

  830. that Jesus

  831. went there

  832. to pray

  833. to talk

  834. to God

  835. the Father

  836. and as this

  837. next day

  838. comes Luke

  839. says that

  840. the people

  841. were searching

  842. for Jesus

  843. they're going

  844. all over the

  845. place trying

  846. to find out

  847. where did

  848. he go

  849. where is

  850. he and

  851. it's not

  852. surprising

  853. I mean

  854. think about

  855. what just

  856. happened

  857. and when

  858. they finally

  859. find Jesus

  860. it says

  861. they tried

  862. to keep

  863. him

  864. from leaving

  865. them

  866. can you

  867. imagine

  868. this

  869. the people

  870. pleading

  871. with him

  872. to stay

  873. what is

  874. Jesus

  875. say

  876. verse 43

  877. I must

  878. proclaim

  879. the good

  880. news

  881. of the

  882. kingdom

  883. of God

  884. to the

  885. other

  886. towns

  887. also

  888. because

  889. that is

  890. why I

  891. was sent

  892. that is

  893. why I

  894. was sent

  895. notice

  896. the word

  897. sent

  898. Jesus

  899. has a

  900. clear

  901. understanding

  902. of who

  903. he is

  904. he knows

  905. what his

  906. mission

  907. is

  908. what God

  909. has given

  910. him to

  911. do

  912. I also

  913. notice

  914. the words

  915. most

  916. emphasized

  917. in this

  918. statement

  919. here

  920. surprisingly

  921. in the

  922. original

  923. also the

  924. other

  925. towns

  926. also the

  927. other

  928. towns

  929. it's right

  930. at the

  931. front

  932. it's

  933. necessary

  934. for me

  935. to proclaim

  936. the good

  937. news of

  938. the kingdom

  939. of God

  940. there

  941. it's not

  942. that Jesus

  943. doesn't want

  944. to be

  945. with the

  946. people of

  947. Capernaum

  948. any longer

  949. it's not

  950. that he's

  951. overwhelmed

  952. by the

  953. crowds

  954. and feels

  955. worn out

  956. or that he

  957. just has

  958. itchy feet

  959. instead

  960. it's this

  961. keen

  962. awareness

  963. of the

  964. need

  965. for other

  966. towns

  967. to hear

  968. this

  969. good

  970. news

  971. that he's

  972. proclaiming

  973. from

  974. God

  975. and so

  976. I cannot

  977. stay

  978. he says

  979. and I

  980. imagine

  981. in that

  982. moment

  983. that front

  984. and center

  985. on people's

  986. minds

  987. is all

  988. the

  989. miracles

  990. the

  991. healings

  992. the

  993. exorcisms

  994. but notice

  995. what Jesus

  996. states

  997. as his

  998. mission

  999. he doesn't

  1000. say I

  1001. must go

  1002. and heal

  1003. people in

  1004. the other

  1005. towns

  1006. too

  1007. the

  1008. healings

  1009. themselves

  1010. are not

  1011. the main

  1012. point

  1013. rather I

  1014. must

  1015. proclaim

  1016. the good

  1017. news

  1018. of the

  1019. kingdom

  1020. because

  1021. that

  1022. is why

  1023. I was

  1024. sent

  1025. this is

  1026. Luke's

  1027. emphasis

  1028. we're

  1029. meant

  1030. to see

  1031. that

  1032. more

  1033. important

  1034. than

  1035. the

  1036. miracles

  1037. is

  1038. the

  1039. message

  1040. they

  1041. confirm

  1042. the

  1043. good

  1044. news

  1045. that

  1046. Jesus

  1047. is

  1048. proclaiming

  1049. the

  1050. miracles

  1051. set

  1052. people

  1053. free

  1054. from

  1055. illnesses

  1056. and

  1057. lifelong

  1058. debilitating

  1059. conditions

  1060. even

  1061. and

  1062. they're

  1063. good

  1064. gifts

  1065. of

  1066. God

  1067. they

  1068. set

  1069. people

  1070. free

  1071. from

  1072. the

  1073. control

  1074. of

  1075. demons

  1076. as

  1077. we

  1078. just

  1079. saw

  1080. but

  1081. the

  1082. message

  1083. has

  1084. the

  1085. power

  1086. to

  1087. set

  1088. people

  1089. free

  1090. from

  1091. death

  1092. itself

  1093. from

  1094. spiritual

  1095. captivity

  1096. and

  1097. bondage

  1098. in

  1099. the

  1100. kingdom

  1101. of

  1102. this

  1103. world

  1104. and

  1105. it

  1106. has

  1107. the

  1108. power

  1109. to

  1110. prepare

  1111. them

  1112. for

  1113. life

  1114. in

  1115. the

  1116. kingdom

  1117. of

  1118. God

  1119. that

  1120. Jesus

  1121. is

  1122. proclaiming

  1123. I

  1124. love

  1125. the

  1126. way

  1127. that

  1128. Luke

  1129. describes

  1130. the

  1131. good

  1132. news

  1133. of

  1134. Jesus

  1135. here

  1136. I

  1137. must

  1138. proclaim

  1139. the

  1140. good

  1141. news

  1142. of

  1143. the

  1144. kingdom

  1145. of

  1146. God

  1147. to

  1148. the

  1149. other

  1150. towns

  1151. also

  1152. what

  1153. is

  1154. the

  1155. kingdom

  1156. of

  1157. God

  1158. it's

  1159. the

  1160. rule

  1161. and

  1162. reign

  1163. of

  1164. God

  1165. which

  1166. has

  1167. always

  1168. been

  1169. and

  1170. is

  1171. now

  1172. coming

  1173. closer

  1174. with

  1175. Jesus

  1176. here

  1177. and

  1178. is

  1179. yet

  1180. to

  1181. come

  1182. in

  1183. full

  1184. measure

  1185. over

  1186. our

  1187. rebellious

  1188. world

  1189. and

  1190. authority

  1191. and

  1192. power

  1193. the

  1194. likes

  1195. of

  1196. which

  1197. the

  1198. world

  1199. has

  1200. never

  1201. seen

  1202. what

  1203. better

  1204. way

  1205. to

  1206. prove

  1207. that

  1208. this

  1209. kingdom

  1210. of

  1211. God

  1212. is

  1213. real

  1214. and

  1215. that

  1216. it

  1217. is

  1218. coming

  1219. than

  1220. by

  1221. these

  1222. miraculous

  1223. words

  1224. of

  1225. power

  1226. that

  1227. Jesus

  1228. declared

  1229. think

  1230. about

  1231. this

  1232. I

  1233. has

  1234. power

  1235. control

  1236. authority

  1237. over

  1238. the

  1239. fallen

  1240. angels

  1241. but

  1242. God

  1243. alone

  1244. Jesus

  1245. speaks

  1246. and

  1247. with

  1248. his

  1249. words

  1250. he

  1251. forces

  1252. them

  1253. out

  1254. and

  1255. subdues

  1256. them

  1257. proving

  1258. that

  1259. he

  1260. is

  1261. the

  1262. king

  1263. the

  1264. Messiah

  1265. of

  1266. this

  1267. kingdom

  1268. who

  1269. has

  1270. power

  1271. and

  1272. control

  1273. and

  1274. authority

  1275. over

  1276. the

  1277. stuff

  1278. of

  1279. the

  1280. natural

  1281. world

  1282. things

  1283. like

  1284. viruses

  1285. and

  1286. bacteria

  1287. and

  1288. bodies

  1289. God

  1290. alone

  1291. does

  1292. Jesus

  1293. speaks

  1294. and

  1295. with

  1296. his

  1297. words

  1298. he

  1299. heals

  1300. !

  1301. He

  1302. eradicates

  1303. sickness

  1304. and disease

  1305. and disorder

  1306. even at

  1307. the cellular

  1308. level

  1309. in people's

  1310. bodies

  1311. proving

  1312. that he

  1313. is the

  1314. king

  1315. of

  1316. God's

  1317. kingdom

  1318. one

  1319. of the

  1320. things

  1321. that's

  1322. come up

  1323. over

  1324. and

  1325. over

  1326. again

  1327. and

  1328. Luke's

  1329. been

  1330. pointing

  1331. us

  1332. to

  1333. it

  1334. is

  1335. this

  1336. truth

  1337. that

  1338. Jesus

  1339. is

  1340. the

  1341. son

  1342. of

  1343. God

  1344. and

  1345. not

  1346. just

  1347. a

  1348. man

  1349. that's

  1350. what

  1351. the

  1352. angel

  1353. Gabriel

  1354. declared

  1355. before

  1356. Jesus

  1357. was

  1358. born

  1359. it

  1360. was

  1361. the

  1362. thing

  1363. God

  1364. himself

  1365. declared

  1366. with

  1367. an audible

  1368. voice

  1369. at

  1370. Jesus

  1371. baptism

  1372. it

  1373. was

  1374. the

  1375. thing

  1376. the

  1377. devil

  1378. tried

  1379. to

  1380. call

  1381. into

  1382. question

  1383. in

  1384. the

  1385. wilderness

  1386. and

  1387. here

  1388. we

  1389. see

  1390. that

  1391. even

  1392. the

  1393. demons

  1394. can't

  1395. help

  1396. but

  1397. acknowledge

  1398. that

  1399. that's

  1400. who

  1401. he

  1402. is

  1403. you

  1404. are

  1405. the

  1406. son

  1407. of

  1408. God

  1409. they

  1410. said

  1411. we

  1412. know

  1413. who

  1414. you

  1415. are

  1416. when

  1417. the

  1418. most

  1419. powerful

  1420. enemies

  1421. of

  1422. Jesus

  1423. are

  1424. shouting

  1425. it

  1426. that's

  1427. pretty

  1428. compelling

  1429. evidence

  1430. that it's

  1431. true

  1432. especially

  1433. if

  1434. Jesus

  1435. has

  1436. the

  1437. power

  1438. to

  1439. shut

  1440. them

  1441. up

  1442. and

  1443. drive

  1444. them

  1445. out

  1446. do

  1447. you

  1448. see

  1449. who

  1450. Jesus

  1451. is

  1452. do

  1453. you

  1454. see

  1455. what

  1456. they

  1457. saw

  1458. that

  1459. day

  1460. do

  1461. you

  1462. hear

  1463. what

  1464. they

  1465. heard

  1466. that

  1467. day

  1468. for

  1469. all

  1470. who

  1471. believe

  1472. in

  1473. Jesus

  1474. our

  1475. faith

  1476. in

  1477. him

  1478. is

  1479. well

  1480. placed

  1481. it's

  1482. not

  1483. just

  1484. a

  1485. blind

  1486. leap

  1487. of

  1488. faith

  1489. God

  1490. has

  1491. put

  1492. the

  1493. clear

  1494. message

  1495. before

  1496. us

  1497. and

  1498. plenty

  1499. of

  1500. signs

  1501. to

  1502. confirm

  1503. it

  1504. all

  1505. that

  1506. remains

  1507. is

  1508. for

  1509. us

  1510. to

  1511. bow

  1512. the

  1513. knee

  1514. before

  1515. God's

  1516. chosen

  1517. king

  1518. and

  1519. pledge

  1520. allegiance

  1521. to

  1522. him

  1523. put

  1524. our

  1525. full

  1526. trust

  1527. and

  1528. faith

  1529. in

  1530. his

  1531. message

  1532. we're

  1533. going

  1534. to

  1535. take

  1536. time

  1537. now

  1538. to

  1539. partake

  1540. of

  1541. the

  1542. Lord's

  1543. table

  1544. together

  1545. this

  1546. what we

  1547. heard

  1548. today

  1549. is

  1550. just

  1551. the

  1552. beginning

  1553. of

  1554. the

  1555. story

  1556. but

  1557. later

  1558. on

  1559. in

  1560. the

  1561. story

  1562. Jesus

  1563. gives

  1564. his

  1565. life

  1566. to

  1567. set

  1568. us

  1569. free

  1570. from

  1571. the

  1572. power

  1573. of

  1574. the

  1575. evil

  1576. one

  1577. the

  1578. power

  1579. of

  1580. sin

  1581. he

  1582. takes

  1583. on

  1584. himself

  1585. the

  1586. punishment

  1587. that

  1588. we

  1589. deserve

  1590. dying

  1591. on

  1592. the

  1593. cross

  1594. to

  1595. atone

  1596. for

  1597. us

  1598. to

  1599. reconcile

  1600. us

  1601. to

  1602. God

  1603. he

  1604. does

  1605. this

  1606. to

  1607. cleanse

  1608. us

  1609. and

  1610. to

  1611. make

  1612. us

  1613. fit

  1614. for

  1615. life

  1616. with

  1617. him

  1618. forever

  1619. in

  1620. his

  1621. kingdom

  1622. and

  1623. so

  1624. we

  1625. want

  1626. to

  1627. remember

  1628. that

  1629. again

  1630. now

  1631. we

  1632. want

  1633. to

  1634. give

  1635. thanks

  1636. for

  1637. that

  1638. again

  1639. now

  1640. by

  1641. eating

  1642. of

  1643. the

  1644. bread

  1645. and

  1646. drinking

  1647. of

  1648. the

  1649. cup

  1650. and

  1651. if

  1652. you're

  1653. here

  1654. and

  1655. you

  1656. believe

  1657. this

  1658. you

  1659. believe

  1660. in

  1661. Jesus

  1662. and

  1663. have

  1664. acknowledged

  1665. him

  1666. as

  1667. your

  1668. king

  1669. your

  1670. savior

  1671. your

  1672. then

  1673. I

  1674. want

  1675. you

  1676. to

  1677. know

  1678. that

  1679. this

  1680. table

  1681. is

  1682. for

  1683. you

  1684. as

  1685. well

  1686. please

  1687. partake

  1688. with

  1689. us

  1690. celebrate

  1691. with

  1692. us

  1693. remember

  1694. with

  1695. us

  1696. and

  1697. if

  1698. not

  1699. please

  1700. just

  1701. allow

  1702. the

  1703. elements

  1704. to

  1705. pass

  1706. you

  1707. by

  1708. we're

  1709. going

  1710. to

  1711. take

  1712. a few

  1713. minutes

  1714. now

  1715. just

  1716. to

  1717. reflect

  1718. and

  1719. pray

  1720. quietly

  1721. and

  1722. then

  1723. after

  1724. that

  1725. we'll

  1726. have

  1727. the

  1728. elders

  1729. come

  1730. up

  1731. and

  1732. pass

  1733. out

  1734. the

  1735. elements

  1736. and

  1737. we'll

  1738. wait

  1739. until

  1740. everybody

  1741. wishing

  1742. to

  1743. partake

  1744. has

  1745. been

  1746. served

  1747. and

  1748. then

  1749. we'll

  1750. eat

  1751. and

  1752. drink

  1753. together

  1754. all

  1755. at

  1756. once

  1757. in

  1758. unison
