  1. Last Sunday we walked together through Matthew's account of what happened leading up to the cross.

  2. !

  3. We followed the unfolding plot against Jesus as the chief priests and the chief priests and the chief priests.

  4. !

  5. We saw Judas quietly slip away to strike a deal, agreeing to betray his friend.

  6. We sat at the table with Jesus and his disciples where he broke bread and spoke of what his death would accomplish.

  7. We entered the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed in deep anguish, surrendering to his Father's will.

  8. There we witnessed the disciples' bold promises of loyalty, promises that would soon falter.

  9. And under the cover of darkness, Judas returned with an armed crowd and Jesus was taken captive.

  10. We heard last Sunday about how through the night Jesus was dragged from place to place as religious leaders sought false testimony to condemn him.

  11. And when asked directly, Jesus made the good confession that he was the Messiah.

  12. Words they called blasphemy.

  13. At daybreak, they led him before Pilate.

  14. And even though Pilate declared Jesus innocent, he bowed to the pressure of the crowd and handed Jesus over to be executed.

  15. We read of the flogging and the mocking, the procession out to Golgotha, the crucifixion, the taunts and the jeers of the bystanders.

  16. And we heard Jesus' loud cry, my God, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

  17. And with another loud cry, Jesus breathed his last and gave up his spirit.

  18. We heard about Joseph of Arimathea and how he got permission to bury Jesus' body in his own tomb.

  19. And a large stone was rolled into place over the entrance and a guard set by the rulers to keep watch.

  20. It was a horrible and tragic day.

  21. But as we just heard sung, all was not lost.

  22. There was a great and mighty purpose of God in the death of Jesus.

  23. Forgiveness for humanity was bought with Jesus' blood.

  24. And this forgiveness was offered freely to all, to you and to me.

  25. And it's all because of the great mercy and love of God toward us.

  26. Just as it says in Ephesians chapter 1,

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  27. In him, in Jesus Christ, we have redemption.

  28. Through his blood, the forgiveness of sins in accordance with the riches of God's grace,

  29. which he lavished on us.

  30. And I hope we don't miss that word grace.

  31. It means that this forgiveness is a gift that's given by God because of his kindness and goodness, his generosity.

  32. It's not something that we need to earn from God.

  33. But each of us can have a restored relationship with him,

  34. despite what we have done,

  35. because of what Jesus did at the cross.

  36. And all we need to do to receive this gift is to repent,

  37. to turn to God, to acknowledge the wrongs we've done and believe.

  38. It was a horrible and tragic day,

  39. but all was not lost.

  40. It was a day of costly sacrifice that became for us the day of our deliverance and salvation.

  41. And what I love about this true story is that it didn't end with death and tragedy.

  42. Reading from Matthew chapter 28 verse 1.

    Matthew 28:1

  43. So Matthew tells us that some time passed while Jesus' body lay lifeless in the tomb.

  44. There was the Sabbath day, which was the seventh day of the week on which no one worked.

  45. And then following that was the first day of the week.

  46. Matthew tells us that two of the Marys who had been close followers of Jesus went to look at the tomb.

  47. There was a violent earthquake for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and going to the tomb,

  48. rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  49. Can you imagine this?

  50. You're on your way to the tomb and the ground begins to tremble violently.

  51. Matthew tells us that the cause of the quake was the angel.

  52. He says there was a violent earthquake for or because an angel of the Lord came down from heaven.

  53. Imagine him streaking down like a bolt of lightning.

  54. By how it's described, it would seem that almost the impact of his arrival just sent a shockwave through the ground.

  55. And what did this angel look like?

  56. Matthew says that his appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow.

  57. Think back to the last time you saw a flash of lightning.

  58. It's amazing just how bright it is.

  59. And so we imagine this angelic being so bright that you can barely stand to look at him.

  60. Matthew says he went to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  61. The whole point of the large stone was to seal the opening to the tomb and to keep people out.

  62. And so there's little doubt that this would have been a very large and heavy stone.

  63. We don't know exactly what it looked like or how big it was or how heavy.

  64. But likely it couldn't be budged by just one person or a few people.

  65. And so the strength of this angel of God is seen in his ability to single-handedly push it back from the entrance to the tomb.

  66. The appearance of this angel and the demonstration of his power was enough to make grown men shrivel in the fetal position on the ground.

  67. Verse 4.

  68. These are soldiers.

  69. These are men picked for the job because of their ability to intimidate.

  70. Their ability to subdue others.

  71. And yet their knees were knocking in terror till they fell limp on the ground.

  72. The angel said to the women,

  73. Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified.

  74. He is not here.

  75. He has risen, just as he said.

  76. Come, see the place where he lay.

  77. So the angel speaks to the women and he knows why they are there.

  78. He knows they're looking for the body of Jesus.

  79. Another gospel account tells us that they had come to put spices on his body.

  80. And they had been even wondering,

  81. How are we going to get the stone rolled away?

  82. The angel says,

  83. You won't find him here.

  84. He's risen.

  85. Just as he said.

  86. I imagine the thoughts of the women were racing in these moments as their hearts pounded within them.

  87. What do you mean he's risen?

  88. What do you mean just as he said?

  89. When did Jesus said that he would rise?

  90. Well, the chief priests and the Pharisees hadn't forgotten about what Jesus had said.

  91. That's the whole reason that they asked Pilate for the detachment of guards.

  92. To watch over the entrance to the tomb.

  93. Look back to chapter 27, verse 62 for a moment.

  94. This was them talking to Pilate.

  95. They went to Pilate and said,

  96. Sir, we remember that while he was still alive, that deceiver said,

  97. After three days, I will rise again.

  98. So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day.

  99. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he's been raised from the dead.

  100. This last deception will be worse than the first.

  101. So the Pharisees and the religious leaders, the chief priests,

  102. they remembered what Jesus had said about rising from the dead.

  103. When had Jesus said that?

  104. That he would rise from the dead?

  105. Well, if we flip back a little longer, a little further,

  106. Matthew chapter 16, verse 21, already back then, it says,

    Matthew 16:21

  107. From that time on, Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem

  108. and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the law,

  109. and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

  110. The sense we get from this is that Jesus has already been saying it,

  111. and not just once, but many times to his disciples, preparing them for this moment.

  112. He is not here.

  113. He has risen, just as he said.

  114. The angel points them to the place where Jesus' body had been laid inside the tomb.

  115. Like, see for yourself.

  116. He's not here.

  117. Go quickly and tell his disciples,

  118. He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee.

  119. There you will see him.

  120. Now, I have told you.

  121. I love this.

  122. The angel tells the women to go tell Jesus' disciples

  123. and gives them the exact words to say to them.

  124. Go and tell them that Jesus has risen from the dead

  125. and is going ahead of you into Galilee.

  126. So if there's any doubt in their minds as to what he has risen meant,

  127. this should clear it up for sure.

  128. Yes, he has risen from the dead.

  129. As in resurrection.

  130. As in alive again.

  131. And he's going ahead of you into Galilee.

  132. This is the language of travel

  133. that describes a living person intentionally going from one place to another.

  134. Like, yes, he's alive.

  135. And there's a promise to go with it.

  136. There you will see him.

  137. There you will see him.

  138. You will lay your own eyes on him alive when you get there.

  139. Well, how did the women respond?

  140. Verse 8.

  141. So the women hurried away from the tomb,

  142. afraid, yet filled with joy,

  143. and ran to tell his disciples.

  144. Have you ever felt so deeply excited about something

  145. that it's like you almost have the jitters?

  146. And that adrenaline's just coursing through your veins

  147. and you can't sit down.

  148. And everything that you do,

  149. you kind of do it with a bit of a hip,

  150. a hip, a hop, a skip, and a jump.

  151. Maybe it's the news that a loved one's baby has just been born.

  152. Or of a long-awaited appointment.

  153. Or a job offer.

  154. Or news of a dear friend who's going to stop in and see you.

  155. That you weren't expecting.

  156. And we get totally pumped.

  157. I imagine that that's just a little of what these women felt.

  158. Scared silly by this angelic encounter.

  159. The adrenaline coursing through their veins.

  160. And yet utterly ecstatic at the words of the angel

  161. that Jesus, the one they saw killed,

  162. was alive again.

  163. They hurried away from the tomb and ran

  164. to tell his disciples.

  165. Afraid, yet filled with joy.

  166. And then all of a sudden, something stopped them in their tracks.

  167. Or rather, someone.

  168. Verse 9.

  169. Suddenly, Jesus met them.

  170. Greetings, he said.

  171. They came to him.

  172. Clasped his feet.

  173. And worshipped him.

  174. This is wonderful.

  175. It doesn't say exactly where this was

  176. or how this happened.

  177. Just that suddenly, Jesus met them.

  178. I don't know.

  179. Did he see and hear them running up behind him

  180. on the path and then just turn around?

  181. Or did he miraculously appear right in front of them?

  182. Causing them to just kind of screech to a halt?

  183. It doesn't say, but there he was,

  184. somewhere between the tomb and Jerusalem

  185. where they were headed.

  186. And the women recognized him.

  187. They knew it was him.

  188. Matthew says they clasped his feet.

  189. It's a very forceful word.

  190. Meaning they grabbed a hold of his feet tightly.

  191. And they worshipped him.

  192. Says Matthew.

  193. They were bowed down on the ground before him.

  194. As before a great king.

  195. Can you imagine what they would have been feeling

  196. in that moment at the feet of Jesus?

  197. They'd watched this man suffer unimaginably.

  198. They watched him die horrifically.

  199. And now three days later,

  200. here he is in front of them, alive.

  201. It's true.

  202. You are the Messiah.

  203. You are the son of the living God.

  204. Jesus then tells them to go into the city

  205. and tell the men, Jesus' disciples,

  206. the plan is to have them all head back

  207. to the northern region of Galilee

  208. where Jesus will meet with them again.

  209. This is Matthew's account of what happened

  210. that morning when God brought Jesus back to life.

  211. And it's a precious story.

  212. One of the things that caught my attention this week

  213. as I was meditating on this

  214. is how different Matthew's account is from Luke's.

  215. Luke tells us about a whole bunch more

  216. that happened that day.

  217. Luke tells us about how Jesus appeared to Peter after this

  218. and then to two men walking on the road to Emmaus

  219. and then about how Jesus later that evening

  220. appeared to the disciples themselves

  221. in Jerusalem behind closed doors.

  222. And then only after that

  223. would they all make their way out to Galilee.

  224. But I got thinking about this.

  225. Why did Matthew leave all that out?

  226. What's Matthew's focus here?

  227. What does Matthew want to emphasize

  228. in the way that he tells it?

  229. Well, Matthew has more to say

  230. about what happened that day.

  231. But it's not about the other appearances of Jesus to people.

  232. Rather, it's about the soldiers

  233. who were at the tomb.

  234. Let's read in verse 11.

  235. While the women were on their way,

  236. some of the guards went into the city

  237. and reported to the chief priests

  238. everything that had happened.

  239. When the chief priests had met with the elders

  240. and devised a plan,

  241. they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,

  242. telling them,

  243. you are to say,

  244. his disciples came during the night

  245. and stole him away

  246. while we were asleep.

  247. If this report gets to the governor,

  248. we will satisfy him

  249. and keep you out of trouble.

  250. So the soldiers took the money

  251. and did as they were instructed.

  252. And this story has been widely circulated

  253. among the Jews

  254. to this very day.

  255. So what's Matthew's emphasis?

  256. Matthew seems eager to highlight

  257. this side thing

  258. that proves the credibility

  259. of this whole account.

  260. And it makes sense.

  261. I mean, after all,

  262. what has Matthew just told us?

  263. He just finished telling us

  264. about an angelic encounter.

  265. He just finished telling us

  266. about the resurrection

  267. of a person from the dead,

  268. somebody that everybody had seen

  269. publicly killed.

  270. He just told us

  271. about how these women

  272. had an encounter

  273. with this resurrected man.

  274. And ordinarily,

  275. this is the stuff

  276. of fantasy and fairy tales.

  277. This is the sort of nonsense

  278. that maybe we might expect

  279. from those who are rocked

  280. with grief

  281. or who are emotionally shattered.

  282. It's almost like Matthew

  283. anticipates the criticism

  284. of the skeptic

  285. who asks,

  286. can we really trust

  287. the word of the women?

  288. Like an angel?

  289. Risen from the dead?

  290. And so what does Matthew tell us?

  291. If you can't take

  292. the women's word for it,

  293. take the soldiers' word for it.

  294. They went into the city

  295. and reported to the chief priests

  296. everything that had happened.

  297. The sense we get

  298. is that they didn't leave out

  299. the surprising details.

  300. The stuff about the angel

  301. and what the angel had said

  302. about how Jesus

  303. had risen from the dead.

  304. That report

  305. triggered a meeting

  306. of the elders

  307. with the chief priests.

  308. And notice

  309. Matthew's description

  310. of what they did

  311. at that meeting.

  312. They devised a plan.

  313. They consulted together.

  314. And the result

  315. of that meeting

  316. was a large sum

  317. of money

  318. being given

  319. to the soldiers.

  320. They agreed

  321. to pay the soldiers

  322. not to tell anyone

  323. what had really happened

  324. at the tomb.

  325. Instead,

  326. to tell people

  327. that his disciples

  328. came during the night

  329. and stole him away

  330. while we were asleep.

  331. not only that,

  332. but the leaders

  333. of the Jews

  334. realized that

  335. at some point

  336. Pilate's going to hear

  337. about this.

  338. And in these days,

  339. what happened

  340. to soldiers

  341. who had been posted guard

  342. but failed

  343. their assignment?

  344. They were routinely

  345. executed.

  346. And so what

  347. did the leaders

  348. of the Jews

  349. promise to do?

  350. They promised

  351. to persuade

  352. Pilate

  353. to turn a blind eye

  354. and refrain

  355. from punishing them.

  356. What we may not realize

  357. is that this is

  358. amazing evidence

  359. that Jesus' resurrection

  360. did in fact

  361. take place

  362. just as the women

  363. described.

  364. First,

  365. there's the obvious

  366. ongoing problem

  367. of the empty tomb

  368. and the missing body

  369. of Jesus.

  370. The easiest way

  371. for the Jewish leaders

  372. to disprove it all

  373. would have been

  374. to simply produce

  375. Jesus' body

  376. and show it

  377. to the people.

  378. Obviously,

  379. they couldn't do that.

  380. In fact,

  381. they'd taken

  382. extra precautions.

  383. They'd even

  384. anticipated,

  385. at least according

  386. to what they thought,

  387. that some of

  388. Jesus' disciples

  389. might try to steal

  390. Jesus' body

  391. in order to proclaim

  392. him risen from the dead.

  393. That's why they'd

  394. ask Pilate

  395. for the soldiers.

  396. So where is

  397. the body of Jesus?

  398. How can it be missing

  399. if it was so well-guarded

  400. by Roman soldiers?

  401. We fell asleep.

  402. You fell asleep?

  403. While you were

  404. on duty?

  405. All of you?

  406. At the same time?

  407. And then there was

  408. the problem

  409. of the large stone.

  410. Would have been

  411. too big

  412. for just one or two guys

  413. to move it

  414. by themselves.

  415. Not to mention

  416. the noise

  417. that it would have made.

  418. So you're telling me

  419. that a group

  420. of four to six

  421. guys managed

  422. to sneak past

  423. a small company

  424. of Roman soldiers

  425. while they were sleeping

  426. and roll this large stone

  427. away from the door

  428. in silence,

  429. grabbed Jesus' body

  430. and then tiptoe

  431. out the door

  432. past all of you

  433. and you didn't

  434. even hear a sound?

  435. We could even add

  436. to this the other

  437. strange evidence

  438. given by one

  439. of the other

  440. gospel accounts

  441. that the cloth

  442. that Jesus' body

  443. was wrapped in

  444. was left behind

  445. and the face cloth,

  446. the head cloth

  447. that covered his head

  448. was folded.

  449. Like,

  450. if you were

  451. stealing the body

  452. and the Roman guards

  453. were sleeping outside,

  454. why would you

  455. take the time?

  456. Why would you

  457. take the risk

  458. to unwrap

  459. the body

  460. and leave the cloth

  461. there?

  462. To fold up

  463. the head cloth

  464. in the middle

  465. of this supposed

  466. heist?

  467. And then if you

  468. did fall asleep

  469. on the job

  470. as a guarding soldier,

  471. how come you're

  472. still alive?

  473. Was there no

  474. consequence

  475. for you failing

  476. to do your job?

  477. Pilate should have

  478. had your head

  479. in the morning?

  480. You weren't

  481. disciplined

  482. in any way?

  483. There's some

  484. major things

  485. that simply

  486. don't add up

  487. and it's evidence

  488. that the women

  489. were telling

  490. the truth.

  491. The soldiers

  492. were witnesses

  493. too.

  494. They knew

  495. that there had

  496. been no theft

  497. of the body.

  498. They knew

  499. that something

  500. spectacular

  501. had taken place.

  502. They saw

  503. the angel

  504. and they

  505. cowered

  506. before him

  507. and then

  508. they reported

  509. everything

  510. that had

  511. happened

  512. to the

  513. chief

  514. priests.

  515. We might

  516. wonder

  517. how did

  518. Matthew

  519. come to

  520. have this

  521. seemingly

  522. inside

  523. information?

  524. He doesn't

  525. cite a source

  526. here.

  527. How did he

  528. know about

  529. this report

  530. of the soldiers

  531. to the high

  532. priest

  533. and the

  534. bribe money

  535. that was

  536. given to them?

  537. How did

  538. he discover

  539. the plan

  540. to smooth

  541. things over

  542. with Pilate

  543. for the

  544. soldiers

  545. who had

  546. seemingly

  547. failed to

  548. do their

  549. job?

  550. Well,

  551. there was

  552. at least

  553. one member

  554. of the

  555. Jewish

  556. ruling

  557. council

  558. if not

  559. two

  560. to whom

  561. Matthew

  562. could go

  563. for that

  564. inside

  565. information

  566. like this.

  567. In fact,

  568. it was

  569. the very

  570. man who

  571. had buried

  572. Jesus

  573. in his

  574. own

  575. tomb,

  576. Joseph

  577. of

  578. Arimathea.

  579. Who was

  580. Joseph?

  581. Luke tells

  582. us some

  583. very helpful

  584. information.

  585. He was

  586. a member

  587. of the

  588. council,

  589. a good

  590. and upright

  591. man who

  592. had not

  593. consented to

  594. their decision

  595. and action.

  596. He came

  597. from the

  598. town of

  599. Judea

  600. and he

  601. himself was

  602. waiting for

  603. the kingdom

  604. of God,

  605. the Judean

  606. town of

  607. Arimathea.

  608. Then we

  609. compare that

  610. to John's

  611. account,

  612. the apostle

  613. John's

  614. account,

  615. and we

  616. read something

  617. interesting there

  618. as well.

  619. John 19,

    John 19:38

  620. verse 38.

  621. Now Joseph

  622. was a

  623. disciple of

  624. Jesus,

  625. but secretly

  626. because he

  627. feared the

  628. Jewish leaders.

  629. With Pilate's

  630. permission,

  631. he came and

  632. took the

  633. body away.

  634. He was

  635. accompanied by

  636. Nicodemus,

  637. the man who

  638. earlier had

  639. visited Jesus

  640. at night.

  641. We read in

  642. John 3 that

  643. Nicodemus was

  644. also a member

  645. of the

  646. council.

  647. So very

  648. likely,

  649. Joseph or

  650. Nicodemus,

  651. or both,

  652. would have

  653. been at

  654. this meeting

  655. since they

  656. were members

  657. of the

  658. council.

  659. Maybe the

  660. council didn't

  661. fully know

  662. whether they

  663. were followers

  664. of Jesus

  665. or not

  666. at this

  667. point.

  668. When we

  669. compare

  670. Matthew's

  671. account with

  672. Luke's

  673. and John's,

  674. there's even

  675. more credibility

  676. to be found

  677. in the

  678. testimony of

  679. these women.

  680. It clearly

  681. wasn't a

  682. plot of

  683. the disciples

  684. because the

  685. disciples were

  686. surprised.

  687. They were as

  688. skeptical as

  689. anyone at

  690. first.

  691. They didn't

  692. even believe

  693. the women.

  694. That's why

  695. they ran to

  696. the tomb.

  697. We've got to

  698. see this.

  699. It says in

  700. Luke, I

  701. believe, that

  702. they didn't

  703. believe the

  704. women because

  705. their words

  706. seemed to

  707. them like

  708. nonsense.

  709. It wasn't

  710. until later

  711. that afternoon

  712. and evening

  713. when Jesus

  714. began to

  715. appear first

  716. to Peter

  717. and then

  718. the rest

  719. of them

  720. that they

  721. believed Jesus

  722. had come

  723. back to

  724. life from

  725. the dead.

  726. So the

  727. truth is that

  728. even though it

  729. sounds too

  730. good to be

  731. true, it's

  732. true.

  733. It is what

  734. happened.

  735. Jesus really

  736. did rise from

  737. the dead just

  738. as he said.

  739. Everything was

  740. pointing to

  741. this.

  742. Consider the

  743. many miracles

  744. of Jesus,

  745. the healings,

  746. the casting

  747. out of demons,

  748. the walking

  749. on water,

  750. the feeding

  751. of the

  752. 5,000,

  753. the supernatural

  754. knowledge that

  755. Jesus had of

  756. people, and the

  757. list could go

  758. on.

  759. Is it any

  760. surprise that

  761. God decided to

  762. do the ultimate

  763. sign, the

  764. ultimate miracle

  765. at the end of

  766. it all, to

  767. prove once and

  768. for all that

  769. Jesus is the

  770. one by raising

  771. him from the

  772. dead?

  773. God is the

  774. one by

  775. God.

  776. That's exactly

  777. what happened

  778. almost 2,000

  779. years ago on

  780. the first day

  781. of the week.

  782. And as we

  783. look back on

  784. that, it's

  785. hard even to

  786. capture the

  787. full significance

  788. of this

  789. reality.

  790. It factors

  791. into so much.

  792. We could

  793. celebrate just

  794. the ultimate

  795. power of

  796. God, which

  797. he displayed by

  798. raising Jesus

  799. from the dead.

  800. We could

  801. reflect on what

  802. it means that

  803. God is the

  804. author of

  805. life itself

  806. and even

  807. the restorer

  808. of life to

  809. those who

  810. have died.

  811. We could

  812. think about how

  813. this resurrection

  814. is like the

  815. ultimate vindication

  816. of Jesus, the

  817. ultimate triumph

  818. over all his

  819. enemies, and

  820. not just the

  821. human ones, but

  822. even the devil

  823. who tempted

  824. him in the

  825. wilderness.

  826. happiness.

  827. We could

  828. celebrate that

  829. Jesus'

  830. resurrection is

  831. the ultimate

  832. proof that

  833. he is the

  834. king, he is

  835. the Messiah that

  836. God has chosen

  837. for us.

  838. All of these

  839. things are true,

  840. all of these

  841. things are

  842. wonderful.

  843. They're all good

  844. things to meditate

  845. on and rejoice

  846. in today,

  847. reasons to

  848. worship Jesus.

  849. But one thing

  850. that I'm drawn to

  851. again and again,

  852. year after year,

  853. is this very

  854. simple connection.

  855. What did

  856. Jesus promise

  857. to those who

  858. believe in

  859. him?

  860. Eternal

  861. life.

  862. He promised

  863. to raise

  864. them from

  865. the dead.

  866. He promised

  867. them life

  868. forever in

  869. the coming

  870. kingdom of

  871. God.

  872. The gospel

  873. accounts of

  874. Matthew, Mark,

  875. Luke, and

  876. John are

  877. full of

  878. these many

  879. promises.

  880. Can Jesus

  881. make good on

  882. these promises?

  883. Can he give

  884. us eternal

  885. life?

  886. Can he really

  887. raise us from

  888. the dead

  889. after we die?

  890. Will he

  891. really be the

  892. king of

  893. that great

  894. kingdom of

  895. God of

  896. which he

  897. spoke?

  898. Will he

  899. be on

  900. the throne?

  901. Well, the

  902. resurrection of

  903. Jesus from

  904. the dead is

  905. proof that

  906. God can

  907. give these

  908. things to

  909. us.

  910. He does

  911. indeed have

  912. the power

  913. to give

  914. life,

  915. to restore

  916. life where

  917. it was lost.

  918. The

  919. resurrection of

  920. Jesus is the

  921. guarantee that

  922. all the good

  923. promises of

  924. God to

  925. us will

  926. be kept

  927. for those

  928. who believe

  929. in his

  930. name.

  931. And that

  932. is something

  933. that makes

  934. me rejoice

  935. year after

  936. year.

  937. Listen to

  938. these precious

  939. words of

  940. Jesus to

  941. Martha just

  942. four days

  943. after the

  944. death of

  945. her brother

  946. and not

  947. long before

  948. Jesus himself

  949. died on the

  950. cross.

  951. from John

    John 11 chapter mention

  952. chapter 11.

  953. Lord,

  954. Martha said

  955. to Jesus,

  956. if you

  957. had been

  958. here,

  959. my brother

  960. would not

  961. have died.

  962. But I

  963. know that

  964. even now

  965. God will

  966. give you

  967. whatever you

  968. ask.

  969. Jesus said

  970. to her,

  971. your brother

  972. will rise

  973. again.

  974. Martha

  975. answered,

  976. I know

  977. he will

  978. rise again

  979. in the

  980. resurrection

  981. at the

  982. last day.

  983. Jesus said

  984. to her,

  985. I am

  986. the

  987. resurrection

  988. and the

  989. life.

  990. The one

  991. who believes

  992. in me

  993. will live

  994. even though

  995. they die.

  996. And whoever

  997. lives believing

  998. in me

  999. will never

  1000. die.

  1001. do you

  1002. believe

  1003. that?

  1004. After

  1005. what we

  1006. heard from

  1007. Matthew

  1008. this

  1009. morning

  1010. about

  1011. what

  1012. happened

  1013. at the

  1014. tomb,

  1015. do you

  1016. believe

  1017. this?

  1018. Do you

  1019. believe

  1020. that Jesus

  1021. is the

  1022. resurrection

  1023. and the

  1024. life?

  1025. Do you

  1026. believe that

  1027. he can

  1028. and will

  1029. raise you

  1030. from the

  1031. dead

  1032. someday?

  1033. when he

  1034. returns?

  1035. This is

  1036. the good

  1037. news that

  1038. Christ's

  1039. resurrection

  1040. declares.

  1041. Along with

  1042. the redemption

  1043. that we

  1044. talked about

  1045. earlier,

  1046. the forgiveness

  1047. of sins,

  1048. it declares

  1049. the gracious

  1050. gift of

  1051. eternal life

  1052. for all of

  1053. us who

  1054. believe in

  1055. him.

  1056. Life

  1057. forever

  1058. with God,

  1059. with Jesus,

  1060. in his

  1061. kingdom.

  1062. And there's

  1063. nothing better

  1064. than that.

  1065. I want to

  1066. invite you

  1067. to stand.

  1068. We're going

  1069. to continue

  1070. to celebrate

  1071. and rejoice

  1072. together with

  1073. a couple more

  1074. songs here.
