  1. All right, as we come to the Word of God this morning, we're continuing on.

  2. The story of Jesus is told by Luke.

  3. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to Luke.

  4. And we are just getting into chapter 6.

  5. Last Sunday we heard about how the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were accusing Jesus and his disciples of being immoral, gluttons, and drunkards.

  6. After they went to a party hosted by Levi, the self-righteous Pharisees asked Jesus,

  7. How come you and your disciples are not fasting like we are?

  8. And we heard Jesus explain how fasting was inappropriate because this was a time for feasting and celebration.

  9. God is doing something new and wonderful.

  10. The bridegroom is here. He used a wedding analogy.

  11. And so the old way of things, which routine fasting was part of, must give way to the new way of things,

  12. to the celebration, to the feast which Jesus is bringing in.

  13. Well, next Luke wants to tell us about another issue where Jesus found himself at odds with the Pharisees.

  14. And it's the challenging issue of the Sabbath and keeping the Sabbath.

  15. Luke starts by telling us about a memorable incident.

  16. In chapter 6, verse 1,

  17. One Sabbath, Jesus was going through the grain fields,

  18. and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain,

  19. rub them in their hands, and eat the kernels.

  20. Some of the Pharisees asked,

  21. Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?

  22. Now, some of you might be quite familiar with the whole idea of the Sabbath,

  23. if you've read through the Bible or heard sermons or teaching on it.

  24. But for some of you, this may be altogether unfamiliar.

  25. It may be new.

  26. So we're going to just unpack it a little bit.

  27. What is the Sabbath?

  28. The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word meaning to rest or to cease.

  29. And it's first mentioned in the Bible all the way back in the days of Moses.

  30. And the Exodus.

  31. God instructed the children of Israel in those days to cease from their work

  32. and rest on the seventh day of every week.

  33. And so the seventh day of the week came to be called the Sabbath day.

  34. It's also worth mentioning that there were some other Sabbath days

  35. that were connected with some of the annual festivals and remembrances.

  36. So it's not just the weekly Sabbath,

  37. but the weekly one is the main one that's in view in our passage today.

  38. Keeping the Sabbath day holy or special was one of the ten commandments

  39. that God gave the Israelites at Mount Sinai.

  40. Back in Exodus chapter 20, God said this.

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  41. He said,

  42. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

  43. Six days you shall labor and do all your work.

  44. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  45. On it you shall not do any work,

  46. neither you nor your son or daughter,

  47. nor your male or female servant,

  48. nor your animals,

  49. nor any foreigner residing in your towns.

  50. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,

  51. the sea and all that is in them,

  52. but he rested on the seventh day.

  53. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day

  54. and made it holy.

  55. And so for thousands of years since then,

  56. it was the practice of faithful Jews to abstain from work

  57. and rest on the seventh day of the week.

  58. And for Jews back then,

  59. days were counted from sunset to sunset.

  60. And so for the purpose of the Sabbath,

  61. Jews even still today in Israel

  62. mark it from sunset to sunset.

  63. And so technically speaking,

  64. the seventh day of the week,

  65. the Sabbath goes from Friday at sundown

  66. to Saturday at sundown.

  67. It was commanded by God to be a full 24 hours

  68. of ceasing from regular work

  69. and of resting to the Lord.

  70. It's also worth mentioning here

  71. that it's the only ceremonial or ritual commandment

  72. of the Ten Commandments.

  73. The other nine have to do with

  74. how they were to relate to God,

  75. how they were to relate to one another,

  76. to their fellow man.

  77. But this one has to do with

  78. how they were to live differently

  79. on a particular day of the week.

  80. As we go through the story of Israel

  81. in the Old Testament,

  82. there's a number of notable instances

  83. in which the Israelites blatantly

  84. disregarded God's commandment

  85. regarding the Sabbath.

  86. And as you can imagine,

  87. that angered God.

  88. I mean, how do you feel

  89. when, for those of you who are parents,

  90. your child knows full well

  91. what you ask them to do,

  92. and yet they do the very opposite

  93. in defiance.

  94. Much later in the story of Israel,

  95. this blatant defiance

  96. is cited as one of the reasons

  97. for why God brought punishment

  98. on the people of Israel.

  99. They ignored the commandment

  100. regarding the Sabbath,

  101. and they treated it

  102. like it was just

  103. one of all the other days

  104. among many of the other wicked things

  105. that they did.

  106. And so God brought disaster

  107. on them

  108. and sent them into captivity

  109. to Babylon.

  110. But now,

  111. centuries later,

  112. the Jews are back in their land.

  113. The cities have been rebuilt.

  114. The temple of God

  115. has been rebuilt

  116. in Jerusalem.

  117. And now,

  118. many of the Jews

  119. have gone too far

  120. the other way.

  121. Instead of blatant disregard

  122. for the Sabbath,

  123. there's now this

  124. hyper-legalistic obsession

  125. with rule-keeping

  126. regarding the Sabbath.

  127. It's almost as if

  128. they wanted to ensure

  129. that they never went back

  130. to profaning the Sabbath

  131. like their forefathers did.

  132. And so they incorporated

  133. all these

  134. extra-religious rules

  135. that in a sense

  136. erect a fence

  137. around the commandment

  138. so that you can't even

  139. get close

  140. to breaking

  141. the commandment.

  142. We want to ensure

  143. nobody ever breaks it

  144. again.

  145. John MacArthur,

  146. a preacher from the States

  147. and pastor,

  148. in one of his commentaries

  149. has described really well

  150. what this kind of

  151. Sabbath-keeping

  152. had become

  153. in the days of Jesus.

  154. and so I'm just going

  155. to actually quote

  156. a longer passage

  157. from one of his sermons

  158. because it's just

  159. so well-written.

  160. He writes,

  161. over the ensuing

  162. 15 centuries

  163. from the time of Moses

  164. to the ministry

  165. of Jesus,

  166. the Sabbath

  167. accumulated

  168. a vast number

  169. of additional

  170. rabbinic rules

  171. and restrictions

  172. which made observing

  173. the seventh day

  174. an overpowering burden.

  175. No less than

  176. 24 chapters

  177. of the Talmud

  178. the central text

  179. of rabbinic Judaism

  180. focus on

  181. Sabbath regulations

  182. meticulously

  183. detailing

  184. the almost

  185. innumerable

  186. specifics

  187. of what constituted

  188. acceptable behavior.

  189. Almost no area

  190. of life

  191. was spared

  192. from the Sabbath

  193. regulations

  194. of the rabbis.

  195. There were laws

  196. about wine,

  197. honey,

  198. milk,

  199. spitting,

  200. writing,

  201. and getting

  202. dirt off

  203. of clothes.

  204. Anything

  205. that might be

  206. contrived as work

  207. was forbidden.

  208. Thus,

  209. on a Sabbath,

  210. scribes

  211. could not

  212. carry their pens,

  213. tailors

  214. their needles,

  215. or students

  216. their books.

  217. To do so

  218. might tempt them

  219. to work

  220. on the Sabbath.

  221. For that matter,

  222. carrying anything

  223. heavier than a dried fig

  224. was forbidden.

  225. And if the object

  226. in question

  227. had been picked up

  228. in a public place,

  229. it could only be

  230. set down

  231. in a private place.

  232. If the object

  233. were tossed

  234. into the air,

  235. it had to be caught

  236. with the same hand.

  237. To catch it

  238. with the other hand

  239. was constituted

  240. as work,

  241. and therefore

  242. would be a violation

  243. of the Sabbath.

  244. No insects

  245. could be killed.

  246. No candle

  247. or flame

  248. could be lit

  249. or extinguished.

  250. Nothing

  251. could be bought

  252. or sold.

  253. No bathing

  254. was allowed

  255. since water

  256. might spill

  257. onto the floor

  258. and accidentally

  259. wash it.

  260. No furniture

  261. could be moved

  262. inside the house

  263. since it might

  264. create ruts

  265. in the dirt floor

  266. and thereby

  267. constitute plowing.

  268. An egg

  269. could not even

  270. be boiled

  271. if all one did

  272. was to place it

  273. in the hot desert sand.

  274. A radish

  275. could not be left

  276. in salt

  277. because it would

  278. become a pickle.

  279. And pickling

  280. constituted work.

  281. Sick people

  282. were only allowed

  283. enough treatment

  284. to keep them

  285. alive.

  286. Any medical

  287. treatment

  288. that improved

  289. their condition

  290. was considered

  291. work

  292. and therefore

  293. prohibited.

  294. It was not even

  295. permissible for women

  296. to look in the mirror

  297. since they might

  298. be tempted

  299. to pull out

  300. any gray hairs

  301. they spotted.

  302. Nor were they

  303. allowed to wear

  304. jewelry

  305. since jewelry

  306. weighs more

  307. than a dried fig.

  308. Other activities

  309. that were banned

  310. on the Sabbath

  311. included

  312. washing clothes,

  313. dyeing wool,

  314. shearing sheep,

  315. spinning wool,

  316. tying or untying

  317. a knot,

  318. sowing seed,

  319. plowing a field,

  320. reaping a harvest,

  321. binding sheaves,

  322. threshing wheat,

  323. grinding flour,

  324. kneading dough,

  325. hunting a deer,

  326. or preparing

  327. its meat.

  328. One of the more

  329. interesting restrictions,

  330. says MacArthur,

  331. related to

  332. the distance

  333. that people

  334. could travel

  335. on the Sabbath.

  336. a person

  337. was not allowed

  338. to travel

  339. more than

  340. 3,000 feet

  341. from home

  342. or

  343. they actually

  344. didn't have feet

  345. back then

  346. so they measured

  347. into steps.

  348. 1,999 steps

  349. is all you're allowed

  350. and of course

  351. they chose that number

  352. because 2,000

  353. was really the number

  354. but let's just set

  355. the bar back

  356. just one step

  357. just in case,

  358. you know.

  359. And due to

  360. practical concerns

  361. the rabbis

  362. devised creative ways

  363. to get around this

  364. so if you placed

  365. food at the

  366. 3,000 foot point

  367. before the

  368. Sabbath began

  369. then that point

  370. was considered

  371. an extension

  372. of your home

  373. which would allow

  374. you another

  375. 3,000 feet

  376. beyond that.

  377. Or if a rope

  378. or piece of wood

  379. was placed across

  380. a narrow street

  381. or alley

  382. it would be

  383. considered a doorway

  384. and it would make

  385. part of one's home

  386. connected to

  387. the next building

  388. or the next person's

  389. home which would

  390. allow the 3,000 feet

  391. to kind of be

  392. outside of that.

  393. And apparently

  394. even in modern times

  395. Jewish neighborhoods

  396. are connecting

  397. houses together

  398. using these cords

  399. and ropes

  400. known as

  401. irav

  402. and doing so

  403. from the perspective

  404. of rabbinic law

  405. creates a single home

  406. out of every

  407. connected building

  408. allowing people

  409. to move freely

  410. within the defined

  411. area without being

  412. limited to that

  413. 3,000 foot restriction

  414. so that they can

  415. carry certain

  416. household items

  417. like keys,

  418. medicine,

  419. strollers,

  420. canes,

  421. and babies.

  422. The man-made

  423. traditions

  424. writes MacArthur

  425. perpetuated by

  426. the Pharisees

  427. and scribes

  428. clearly placed

  429. a crushing

  430. weight

  431. on the people.

  432. Now I thought

  433. that sounds

  434. ridiculous

  435. that sounds

  436. extreme

  437. is that how

  438. it really was?

  439. So I had to

  440. look up some

  441. of these things

  442. and sure enough

  443. they are in

  444. the Jewish

  445. Talmud

  446. and the Mishnah

  447. to that degree

  448. and it's worth

  449. noting that the

  450. Pharisees didn't

  451. see all these

  452. add-ons as

  453. optional.

  454. Like if you

  455. break these

  456. rules

  457. you are working

  458. on the Sabbath.

  459. You are leaving

  460. home on the

  461. Sabbath.

  462. You're sinning

  463. against God.

  464. You're breaking

  465. his commandments

  466. and if you

  467. keep these

  468. rules

  469. if you keep

  470. all these

  471. things

  472. then that's

  473. righteousness.

  474. That's what

  475. pleases God.

  476. So it's like

  477. they came up

  478. out of the

  479. ditch of

  480. blatantly

  481. ignoring the

  482. Sabbath

  483. and they went

  484. right off

  485. the other

  486. side

  487. into the

  488. ditch

  489. of

  490. a

  491. legalistic

  492. self-righteous

  493. man-made

  494. religious

  495. striving.

  496. And so this

  497. gives us some

  498. understanding of

  499. the Sabbath

  500. and why the

  501. Pharisees would

  502. say something

  503. like this

  504. to Jesus

  505. and his

  506. disciples.

  507. I mean here

  508. they are

  509. they're out

  510. on a walk

  511. having a

  512. stroll on

  513. the Sabbath

  514. day.

  515. They're

  516. presumably

  517. hungry

  518. which is

  519. why they

  520. started

  521. just you

  522. know

  523. grabbing

  524. some

  525. grain

  526. gleaning

  527. it from

  528. the field

  529. and the

  530. Pharisees

  531. it seems

  532. were lurking

  533. nearby

  534. and keeping

  535. a close

  536. eye on

  537. them

  538. and they

  539. see them

  540. pick those

  541. heads of

  542. grain

  543. oh

  544. that's

  545. that's

  546. harvesting

  547. they're

  548. harvesting

  549. they see

  550. them rubbing

  551. it between

  552. their hands

  553. oh

  554. that's

  555. threshing

  556. that's

  557. that's

  558. food

  559. preparation

  560. right there

  561. they're

  562. working

  563. on the

  564. Sabbath

  565. day

  566. why are

  567. you doing

  568. what is

  569. unlawful

  570. on the

  571. Sabbath

  572. well how

  573. does

  574. Jesus

  575. respond

  576. to this

  577. verse

  578. three

  579. Jesus

  580. answered

  581. them

  582. have

  583. you

  584. never

  585. read

  586. what

  587. David

  588. did

  589. when

  590. he

  591. and

  592. his

  593. companions

  594. were

  595. hungry

  596. he

  597. entered

  598. the

  599. house

  600. of

  601. God

  602. and

  603. taking

  604. the

  605. consecrated

  606. bread

  607. he

  608. ate

  609. what

  610. is

  611. lawful

  612. only

  613. for

  614. priests

  615. to

  616. eat

  617. and

  618. he

  619. also

  620. gave

  621. some

  622. to

  623. his

  624. companions

  625. now

  626. this

  627. response

  628. of

  629. Jesus

  630. is

  631. very

  632. difficult

  633. to

  634. understand

  635. we

  636. all

  637. understand

  638. intuitively

  639. that

  640. it's

  641. Jesus

  642. arguing

  643. back

  644. against

  645. what

  646. the

  647. Pharisees

  648. are

  649. saying

  650. but

  651. how

  652. does

  653. this

  654. argument

  655. work

  656. what

  657. is

  658. Jesus

  659. point

  660. another

  661. commentator

  662. John

  663. Nolan

  664. put it

  665. this way

  666. he said

  667. there's

  668. no

  669. shortage

  670. of

  671. suggestions

  672. about

  673. how

  674. this

  675. argument

  676. operates

  677. but

  678. consensus

  679. has

  680. remained

  681. elusive

  682. he goes

  683. on in

  684. his

  685. commentary

  686. to list

  687. five

  688. different

  689. explanations

  690. for how

  691. for what

  692. this means

  693. that Jesus

  694. said

  695. how this

  696. argument

  697. works

  698. and then

  699. he says

  700. the list

  701. is not

  702. complete

  703. there's

  704. some

  705. I

  706. didn't

  707. put

  708. in

  709. why

  710. is

  711. this

  712. such

  713. a

  714. difficult

  715. answer

  716. first

  717. of all

  718. Jesus

  719. uses

  720. a

  721. rhetorical

  722. question

  723. referring

  724. to an

  725. Old

  726. Testament

  727. event

  728. which

  729. kind

  730. of

  731. implies

  732. he's

  733. making

  734. a

  735. statement

  736. but

  737. what

  738. is

  739. that

  740. statement

  741. what

  742. is

  743. he

  744. saying

  745. to

  746. the

  747. Pharisees

  748. second

  749. Jesus

  750. refers

  751. to

  752. King

  753. David's

  754. story

  755. from

  756. 1st

  757. Samuel

  758. chapter

  759. 21

  760. verse

  761. 1

  762. to

  763. 9

  764. and

  765. David's

  766. fleeing

  767. from

  768. King

  769. Saul

  770. in

  771. that

  772. passage

  773. who's

  774. trying

  775. to

  776. kill

  777. him

  778. even

  779. though

  780. he's

  781. done

  782. nothing

  783. wrong

  784. David

  785. lies

  786. to

  787. the

  788. priest

  789. and

  790. says

  791. the

  792. king

  793. sent

  794. me

  795. on

  796. a

  797. mission

  798. when

  799. in

  800. fact

  801. he

  802. hasn't

  803. and

  804. so

  805. it

  806. kind

  807. of

  808. raises

  809. some

  810. of

  811. these

  812. questions

  813. of

  814. well

  815. was

  816. David

  817. acting

  818. rightly

  819. in

  820. that

  821. situation

  822. or

  823. was

  824. he

  825. acting

  826. out

  827. of

  828. fear

  829. then

  830. there's

  831. the

  832. tabernacle

  833. regulations

  834. that

  835. Jesus

  836. refers

  837. to

  838. in

  839. this

  840. argument

  841. it

  842. all

  843. revolves

  844. around

  845. specific

  846. regulations

  847. at

  848. the

  849. tabernacle

  850. which

  851. was

  852. like

  853. the

  854. set

  855. up

  856. and

  857. take

  858. down

  859. temple

  860. that

  861. the

  862. Israelites

  863. had

  864. and

  865. one

  866. of

  867. the

  868. things

  869. at

  870. the

  871. tabernacle

  872. was

  873. this

  874. consecrated

  875. bread

  876. they

  877. were

  878. to

  879. put

  880. out

  881. fresh

  882. bread

  883. 12

  884. loaves

  885. of

  886. it

  887. in

  888. the

  889. holy

  890. area

  891. every

  892. Sabbath

  893. day

  894. and

  895. they

  896. had

  897. to

  898. change

  899. it

  900. each

  901. week

  902. on

  903. the

  904. Sabbath

  905. and

  906. Jesus

  907. basically

  908. says

  909. well

  910. this

  911. consecrated

  912. bread

  913. was

  914. meant

  915. only

  916. for

  917. priests

  918. and

  919. yet

  920. the

  921. priest

  922. gave

  923. it

  924. to

  925. David

  926. and

  927. David

  928. ate

  929. it

  930. which

  931. was

  932. not

  933. lawful

  934. for

  935. him

  936. to

  937. do

  938. so

  939. it

  940. pushes

  941. us

  942. to

  943. this

  944. big

  945. question

  946. of

  947. well

  948. was

  949. David

  950. justified

  951. in

  952. eating

  953. this

  954. bread

  955. or

  956. not

  957. I

  958. mean

  959. Jesus

  960. states

  961. that

  962. it

  963. was

  964. unlawful

  965. even

  966. more

  967. strongly

  968. we

  969. see

  970. in

  971. the

  972. gospel

  973. of

  974. Matthew

  975. and

  976. yet

  977. David

  978. wasn't

  979. condemned

  980. God

  981. didn't

  982. punish

  983. him

  984. there

  985. was

  986. nothing

  987. of

  988. that

  989. so

  990. was

  991. this

  992. an

  993. exception

  994. of

  995. mercy

  996. all

  997. of

  998. that

  999. pushes

  1000. us

  1001. even

  1002. further

  1003. into

  1004. this

  1005. ethical

  1006. discussion

  1007. does

  1008. mercy

  1009. sometimes

  1010. necessitate

  1011. breaking

  1012. commandments

  1013. are

  1014. some

  1015. commandments

  1016. are

  1017. some

  1018. commandments

  1019. limited

  1020. in scope

  1021. and

  1022. can be

  1023. set

  1024. aside

  1025. when it

  1026. comes into

  1027. conflict

  1028. with a

  1029. greater

  1030. one

  1031. and

  1032. then

  1033. at

  1034. the

  1035. end

  1036. of

  1037. all

  1038. that

  1039. we

  1040. have

  1041. to

  1042. figure

  1043. out

  1044. how

  1045. does

  1046. that

  1047. apply

  1048. to

  1049. Jesus

  1050. and

  1051. his

  1052. disciples

  1053. right

  1054. now

  1055. who

  1056. are

  1057. gleaning

  1058. in

  1059. the

  1060. field

  1061. is

  1062. Jesus

  1063. suggesting

  1064. that

  1065. they

  1066. can

  1067. do

  1068. what

  1069. is

  1070. unlawful

  1071. without

  1072. guilt

  1073. just

  1074. like

  1075. David

  1076. did

  1077. or

  1078. is

  1079. he

  1080. saying

  1081. something

  1082. to

  1083. the

  1084. effect

  1085. of

  1086. you

  1087. Pharisees

  1088. you

  1089. wouldn't

  1090. apply

  1091. your

  1092. legalistic

  1093. Sabbath

  1094. rules

  1095. to

  1096. King

  1097. David

  1098. and

  1099. condemn

  1100. him

  1101. even

  1102. though

  1103. technically

  1104. he

  1105. broke

  1106. the

  1107. law

  1108. but

  1109. you're

  1110. now

  1111. applying

  1112. it

  1113. to

  1114. us

  1115. here

  1116. and

  1117. now

  1118. even

  1119. though

  1120. technically

  1121. we

  1122. haven't

  1123. broken

  1124. God's

  1125. command

  1126. to keep

  1127. the

  1128. Sabbath

  1129. only

  1130. broken

  1131. your

  1132. man-made

  1133. rules

  1134. about

  1135. the

  1136. Sabbath

  1137. we

  1138. could

  1139. go

  1140. on

  1141. here

  1142. but

  1143. I

  1144. think

  1145. you

  1146. get

  1147. the

  1148. point

  1149. this

  1150. is

  1151. not

  1152. an

  1153. easy

  1154. thing

  1155. of

  1156. Jesus

  1157. to

  1158. understand

  1159. and

  1160. I

  1161. spent

  1162. hours

  1163. on

  1164. this

  1165. studying

  1166. reading

  1167. and

  1168. I'll

  1169. be

  1170. honest

  1171. I

  1172. do

  1173. not

  1174. know

  1175. how

  1176. this

  1177. argument

  1178. from

  1179. the

  1180. story

  1181. of

  1182. David

  1183. works

  1184. and

  1185. what

  1186. Jesus

  1187. meant

  1188. by

  1189. it

  1190. but

  1191. there

  1192. are

  1193. some

  1194. things

  1195. that

  1196. are

  1197. clear

  1198. that

  1199. Jesus

  1200. said

  1201. after

  1202. this

  1203. and

  1204. we're

  1205. going to

  1206. focus

  1207. on

  1208. that

  1209. this

  1210. morning

  1211. in the

  1212. gospel

  1213. of

  1214. Matthew

  1215. there's

  1216. more

  1217. that

  1218. Jesus

  1219. said

  1220. that

  1221. we

  1222. hear

  1223. of

  1224. Matthew

    Matthew 12:5

  1225. chapter

  1226. 12

  1227. verse

  1228. 5

  1229. Jesus

  1230. goes

  1231. on

  1232. with

  1233. a

  1234. second

  1235. example

  1236. he

  1237. says

  1238. haven't

  1239. you

  1240. read

  1241. in

  1242. the

  1243. law

  1244. that

  1245. the

  1246. priests

  1247. on

  1248. Sabbath

  1249. duty

  1250. in

  1251. the

  1252. temple

  1253. desecrate

  1254. the

  1255. Sabbath

  1256. and

  1257. yet

  1258. are

  1259. innocent

  1260. this

  1261. one's

  1262. a little

  1263. clearer

  1264. the

  1265. priests

  1266. were

  1267. commanded

  1268. to offer

  1269. sacrifices

  1270. and to

  1271. change

  1272. the

  1273. bread

  1274. among

  1275. other

  1276. things

  1277. on

  1278. the

  1279. Sabbath

  1280. so

  1281. they

  1282. were

  1283. commanded

  1284. by

  1285. God

  1286. to

  1287. do

  1288. their

  1289. duties

  1290. to

  1291. work

  1292. on

  1293. the

  1294. Sabbath

  1295. despite

  1296. the

  1297. fourth

  1298. commandment

  1299. and

  1300. in

  1301. doing

  1302. so

  1303. Jesus

  1304. said

  1305. they're

  1306. innocent

  1307. they're

  1308. not

  1309. breaking

  1310. it

  1311. and

  1312. so

  1313. maybe

  1314. we

  1315. need

  1316. to

  1317. adjust

  1318. our

  1319. understanding

  1320. of

  1321. the

  1322. scope

  1323. of

  1324. God's

  1325. commandments

  1326. or

  1327. be

  1328. open

  1329. to

  1330. the

  1331. possibility

  1332. that

  1333. one

  1334. commandment

  1335. at

  1336. times

  1337. may

  1338. trump

  1339. another

  1340. if

  1341. the

  1342. two

  1343. seem

  1344. to

  1345. be

  1346. in

  1347. conflict

  1348. next

  1349. we

  1350. also

  1351. notice

  1352. in

  1353. Matthew's

  1354. gospel

  1355. Jesus

  1356. said

  1357. this

  1358. he

  1359. said

  1360. if

  1361. you

  1362. had

  1363. known

  1364. what

  1365. these

  1366. words

  1367. mean

  1368. I

  1369. desire

  1370. mercy

  1371. not

  1372. sacrifice

  1373. you

  1374. would

  1375. not

  1376. have

  1377. condemned

  1378. the

  1379. innocent

  1380. he

  1381. says

  1382. this

  1383. to

  1384. the

  1385. Pharisees

  1386. here

  1387. and

  1388. this

  1389. quote

  1390. is

  1391. I

  1392. desire

  1393. mercy

  1394. not

  1395. sacrifice

  1396. is

  1397. something

  1398. God

  1399. said

  1400. through

  1401. the

  1402. prophet

  1403. of

  1404. Hosea

  1405. long

  1406. ago

  1407. so

  1408. Jesus

  1409. himself

  1410. says

  1411. that

  1412. he

  1413. and

  1414. his

  1415. disciples

  1416. are

  1417. innocent

  1418. this

  1419. is

  1420. Jesus

  1421. verdict

  1422. right

  1423. here

  1424. we're

  1425. not

  1426. breaking

  1427. the

  1428. Sabbath

  1429. command

  1430. that's

  1431. not

  1432. what

  1433. it

  1434. was

  1435. intended

  1436. to

  1437. to

  1438. mean

  1439. we're

  1440. not

  1441. we're

  1442. not

  1443. they

  1444. haven't

  1445. failed

  1446. to

  1447. keep

  1448. the

  1449. Sabbath

  1450. day

  1451. holy

  1452. just

  1453. because

  1454. they're

  1455. picking

  1456. grain

  1457. and

  1458. eating

  1459. the

  1460. kernels

  1461. !

  1462. while

  1463. walking

  1464. along

  1465. regardless

  1466. of

  1467. what the

  1468. Pharisees

  1469. think

  1470. this

  1471. is

  1472. the

  1473. verdict

  1474. of

  1475. Jesus

  1476. they

  1477. are

  1478. innocent

  1479. maybe

  1480. they've

  1481. broken

  1482. the

  1483. man-made

  1484. religious

  1485. rules

  1486. of

  1487. the

  1488. Sabbath

  1489. but

  1490. they

  1491. haven't

  1492. in

  1493. God's

  1494. eyes

  1495. done

  1496. any

  1497. wrong

  1498. and

  1499. these

  1500. words

  1501. I

  1502. desire

  1503. mercy

  1504. not

  1505. sacrifice

  1506. seem

  1507. to be

  1508. really

  1509. key

  1510. and

  1511. powerful

  1512. in this

  1513. situation

  1514. there's

  1515. two

  1516. words

  1517. there

  1518. mercy

  1519. and

  1520. sacrifice

  1521. one

  1522. of

  1523. these

  1524. words

  1525. describes

  1526. the

  1527. outward

  1528. behavior

  1529. the

  1530. ritual

  1531. the

  1532. ceremony

  1533. the

  1534. other

  1535. describes

  1536. the

  1537. heart

  1538. in

  1539. other

  1540. words

  1541. Israel

  1542. long

  1543. ago

  1544. and the

  1545. Pharisees

  1546. now

  1547. missed

  1548. the

  1549. heart

  1550. behind

  1551. the

  1552. law

  1553. they

  1554. missed

  1555. the

  1556. very

  1557. heart

  1558. of

  1559. the

  1560. Sabbath

  1561. commandment

  1562. they

  1563. transformed

  1564. what was

  1565. intended

  1566. by God

  1567. as a

  1568. gift

  1569. to rest

  1570. and refresh

  1571. into

  1572. something

  1573. utterly

  1574. burdensome

  1575. another

  1576. religious

  1577. obligation

  1578. like

  1579. quick

  1580. we gotta

  1581. you know

  1582. get home

  1583. and we gotta

  1584. tie the

  1585. ropes

  1586. between our

  1587. houses

  1588. so that

  1589. we can

  1590. go back

  1591. and forth

  1592. between

  1593. our

  1594. houses

  1595. tomorrow

  1596. without

  1597. having to

  1598. count

  1599. steps

  1600. or

  1601. hurry

  1602. if we

  1603. don't

  1604. set the

  1605. food

  1606. out

  1607. near

  1608. the

  1609. edge

  1610. of the

  1611. property

  1612. we

  1613. won't

  1614. have

  1615. enough

  1616. steps

  1617. to

  1618. make

  1619. it

  1620. to

  1621. grandma's

  1622. house

  1623. tomorrow

  1624. to check

  1625. in

  1626. on her

  1627. like

  1628. that's

  1629. not

  1630. the

  1631. kind

  1632. of

  1633. life

  1634. that

  1635. God

  1636. intended

  1637. for

  1638. his

  1639. people

  1640. when

  1641. he

  1642. gave

  1643. that

  1644. commandment

  1645. that's

  1646. not

  1647. the

  1648. kind

  1649. of

  1650. relationship

  1651. that

  1652. he

  1653. had

  1654. in

  1655. mind

  1656. for

  1657. them

  1658. that's

  1659. heartless

  1660. man-made

  1661. religion

  1662. and

  1663. rule

  1664. following

  1665. that's

  1666. the

  1667. sacrifice

  1668. that

  1669. God

  1670. doesn't

  1671. want

  1672. I

  1673. desire

  1674. mercy

  1675. not

  1676. sacrifice

  1677. God

  1678. wants

  1679. a

  1680. relationship

  1681. with

  1682. us

  1683. characterized

  1684. by

  1685. mercy

  1686. by

  1687. compassion

  1688. by

  1689. loving

  1690. kindness

  1691. he

  1692. doesn't

  1693. want

  1694. mere

  1695. lip

  1696. service

  1697. or

  1698. heartless

  1699. ritual

  1700. observance

  1701. this

  1702. comes

  1703. out

  1704. especially

  1705. with

  1706. what

  1707. Mark

  1708. reports

  1709. in

  1710. his

  1711. gospel

  1712. each

  1713. one

  1714. of

  1715. them

  1716. saw

  1717. or

  1718. took

  1719. note

  1720. of

  1721. a

  1722. different

  1723. thing

  1724. Jesus

  1725. said

  1726. Mark

    Mark 2:27

  1727. chapter

  1728. 2

  1729. verse

  1730. 27

  1731. then

  1732. Jesus

  1733. said

  1734. to

  1735. them

  1736. the

  1737. Sabbath

  1738. was

  1739. made

  1740. for

  1741. man

  1742. not

  1743. man

  1744. for

  1745. the

  1746. Sabbath

  1747. God

  1748. didn't

  1749. make

  1750. human

  1751. beings

  1752. because

  1753. there was

  1754. an important

  1755. day

  1756. that needed

  1757. to be

  1758. kept

  1759. holy

  1760. and he

  1761. needed

  1762. some

  1763. people

  1764. to keep

  1765. it

  1766. holy

  1767. rather

  1768. he

  1769. instituted

  1770. the

  1771. Sabbath

  1772. day

  1773. as a

  1774. benefit

  1775. for the

  1776. people

  1777. that he

  1778. had

  1779. created

  1780. as a

  1781. gift

  1782. a

  1783. needed

  1784. day

  1785. to rest

  1786. and

  1787. spiritually

  1788. a

  1789. day

  1790. to

  1791. cease

  1792. from

  1793. strivings

  1794. and

  1795. remember

  1796. that

  1797. God

  1798. is

  1799. our

  1800. provider

  1801. think

  1802. of it

  1803. this

  1804. way

  1805. do

  1806. you

  1807. like

  1808. holidays

  1809. I

  1810. like

  1811. holidays

  1812. even

  1813. the

  1814. word

  1815. comes

  1816. from

  1817. holy

  1818. day

  1819. meaning

  1820. special

  1821. day

  1822. a day

  1823. set

  1824. apart

  1825. from

  1826. the

  1827. rest

  1828. where

  1829. we

  1830. all

  1831. take

  1832. a

  1833. break

  1834. and

  1835. we

  1836. enjoy

  1837. relationship

  1838. we

  1839. go

  1840. out

  1841. and

  1842. enjoy

  1843. God's

  1844. creation

  1845. or

  1846. we

  1847. go

  1848. visit

  1849. family

  1850. or

  1851. we

  1852. sleep

  1853. in

  1854. or

  1855. we

  1856. do

  1857. some

  1858. recreational

  1859. activity

  1860. we

  1861. have

  1862. a

  1863. nap

  1864. whatever

  1865. now

  1866. imagine

  1867. that

  1868. you

  1869. lived

  1870. in

  1871. a

  1872. society

  1873. where

  1874. there

  1875. were

  1876. no

  1877. holidays

  1878. no

  1879. days

  1880. off

  1881. ever

  1882. everybody

  1883. works

  1884. seven

  1885. days

  1886. a

  1887. week

  1888. and

  1889. the

  1890. only

  1891. days

  1892. you

  1893. get

  1894. off

  1895. are

  1896. if

  1897. you're

  1898. too

  1899. ill

  1900. to

  1901. work

  1902. so

  1903. as

  1904. God

  1905. set

  1906. up

  1907. his

  1908. covenant

  1909. law

  1910. with

  1911. the

  1912. Sabbath

  1913. was

  1914. like

  1915. God

  1916. saying

  1917. you

  1918. guys

  1919. have

  1920. been

  1921. slaves

  1922. all

  1923. your

  1924. lives

  1925. you've

  1926. been

  1927. working

  1928. seven

  1929. days

  1930. a

  1931. week

  1932. with

  1933. no

  1934. break

  1935. and

  1936. now

  1937. you're

  1938. free

  1939. and

  1940. as

  1941. we

  1942. do

  1943. this

  1944. now

  1945. as

  1946. you

  1947. are

  1948. my

  1949. people

  1950. and

  1951. I

  1952. am

  1953. your

  1954. God

  1955. I'm

  1956. not

  1957. just

  1958. going

  1959. to

  1960. give

  1961. you

  1962. three

  1963. holidays

  1964. a

  1965. year

  1966. or

  1967. even

  1968. just

  1969. one

  1970. a

  1971. month

  1972. I'm

  1973. going

  1974. to

  1975. give

  1976. you

  1977. a

  1978. holiday

  1979. every

  1980. week

  1981. at

  1982. the

  1983. end

  1984. of

  1985. the

  1986. week

  1987. a

  1988. day

  1989. off

  1990. a

  1991. day

  1992. to

  1993. rest

  1994. for

  1995. six

  1996. days

  1997. you'll

  1998. do

  1999. your

  2000. work

  2001. and

  2002. then

  2003. on

  2004. the

  2005. seventh

  2006. day

  2007. rest

  2008. don't

  2009. do

  2010. your

  2011. regular

  2012. work

  2013. that

  2014. day

  2015. we

  2016. often

  2017. smile

  2018. when

  2019. the

  2020. boss

  2021. says

  2022. you've

  2023. been

  2024. working

  2025. too

  2026. much

  2027. and

  2028. not

  2029. taking

  2030. your

  2031. days

  2032. off

  2033. I'm

  2034. sending

  2035. you

  2036. home

  2037. take

  2038. your

  2039. day

  2040. off

  2041. well

  2042. that's

  2043. what

  2044. the

  2045. fourth

  2046. commandment

  2047. was

  2048. it

  2049. was

  2050. God

  2051. saying

  2052. you've

  2053. been

  2054. working

  2055. too

  2056. much

  2057. take

  2058. a

  2059. day

  2060. off

  2061. from

  2062. now

  2063. on

  2064. take

  2065. that

  2066. day

  2067. rest

  2068. remember

  2069. me

  2070. keep

  2071. that

  2072. day

  2073. special

  2074. keep

  2075. it

  2076. set

  2077. apart

  2078. keep

  2079. it

  2080. holy

  2081. to

  2082. put it

  2083. another

  2084. way

  2085. in the

  2086. mind

  2087. of

  2088. the

  2089. Pharisees

  2090. if

  2091. all

  2092. the

  2093. Jews

  2094. in

  2095. Israel

  2096. were

  2097. to

  2098. be

  2099. wiped

  2100. out

  2101. it

  2102. would

  2103. be

  2104. a

  2105. massive

  2106. problem

  2107. why

  2108. because

  2109. who

  2110. would

  2111. keep

  2112. the

  2113. daily

  2114. sacrifices

  2115. going

  2116. at

  2117. the

  2118. temple

  2119. who

  2120. would

  2121. keep

  2122. the

  2123. candles

  2124. lit

  2125. who

  2126. would

  2127. keep

  2128. changing

  2129. the

  2130. show

  2131. bread

  2132. every

  2133. Sabbath

  2134. who

  2135. would

  2136. be

  2137. there

  2138. to

  2139. keep

  2140. the

  2141. Sabbath

  2142. day

  2143. holy

  2144. nobody

  2145. as

  2146. if

  2147. God

  2148. needed

  2149. these

  2150. things

  2151. to

  2152. be

  2153. done

  2154. for

  2155. him

  2156. like

  2157. to

  2158. !

  2159. keep

  2160. him

  2161. happy

  2162. but

  2163. Jesus

  2164. is

  2165. saying

  2166. no

  2167. that's

  2168. all

  2169. backwards

  2170. we're

  2171. thinking

  2172. about

  2173. the

  2174. wrong

  2175. way

  2176. it's

  2177. not

  2178. that

  2179. he

  2180. needs

  2181. us

  2182. to

  2183. keep

  2184. his

  2185. temple

  2186. ordinances

  2187. or

  2188. that

  2189. he

  2190. needs

  2191. the

  2192. sacrifices

  2193. to

  2194. be

  2195. happy

  2196. the

  2197. whole

  2198. purpose

  2199. of

  2200. all

  2201. of

  2202. that

  2203. is

  2204. to

  2205. facilitate

  2206. relationship

  2207. between

  2208. him

  2209. and

  2210. his

  2211. people

  2212. that's

  2213. what

  2214. the

  2215. temple

  2216. was

  2217. everything

  2218. in

  2219. it

  2220. from

  2221. the

  2222. bread

  2223. to

  2224. the

  2225. garments

  2226. the

  2227. priests

  2228. wore

  2229. to

  2230. the

  2231. sacrifices

  2232. that

  2233. were

  2234. to

  2235. be

  2236. offered

  2237. to

  2238. the

  2239. way

  2240. that

  2241. it

  2242. was

  2243. set

  2244. up

  2245. and

  2246. how

  2247. things

  2248. were

  2249. marked

  2250. out

  2251. it

  2252. was

  2253. there

  2254. to

  2255. remind

  2256. them

  2257. of

  2258. different

  2259. aspects

  2260. of

  2261. their

  2262. relationship

  2263. with

  2264. God

  2265. and

  2266. who

  2267. he

  2268. is

  2269. he

  2270. is

  2271. holy

  2272. he

  2273. is

  2274. pure

  2275. he

  2276. is

  2277. worthy

  2278. and

  2279. to

  2280. remind

  2281. us

  2282. of

  2283. who

  2284. we

  2285. are

  2286. we

  2287. are

  2288. sinners

  2289. in

  2290. need

  2291. of

  2292. forgiveness

  2293. and

  2294. cleansing

  2295. we

  2296. are

  2297. dependent

  2298. on

  2299. him

  2300. for

  2301. everything

  2302. it

  2303. was

  2304. a

  2305. place

  2306. to

  2307. draw

  2308. for

  2309. cleansing

  2310. and

  2311. forgiveness

  2312. but

  2313. also

  2314. for

  2315. fellowship

  2316. and

  2317. worship

  2318. and

  2319. prayer

  2320. it

  2321. was

  2322. a

  2323. place

  2324. where

  2325. they

  2326. sang

  2327. it

  2328. was

  2329. a

  2330. place

  2331. to

  2332. be

  2333. in

  2334. his

  2335. presence

  2336. which

  2337. is

  2338. what

  2339. the

  2340. bread

  2341. symbolized

  2342. the

  2343. temple

  2344. was

  2345. instituted

  2346. for

  2347. the

  2348. purpose

  2349. of

  2350. relationship

  2351. with

  2352. us

  2353. with

  2354. man

  2355. and

  2356. the

  2357. same

  2358. thing

  2359. applies

  2360. to

  2361. the

  2362. Sabbath

  2363. it's

  2364. not

  2365. as

  2366. though

  2367. God

  2368. made

  2369. the

  2370. day

  2371. first

  2372. and

  2373. then

  2374. said

  2375. okay

  2376. I'm

  2377. going

  2378. to

  2379. make

  2380. man

  2381. now

  2382. to

  2383. keep

  2384. this

  2385. day

  2386. holy

  2387. to

  2388. keep

  2389. it

  2390. special

  2391. no

  2392. the

  2393. Sabbath

  2394. was

  2395. made

  2396. for

  2397. man

  2398. not

  2399. man

  2400. for

  2401. the

  2402. Sabbath

  2403. finally

  2404. we come

  2405. to that

  2406. last

  2407. verse

  2408. and my

  2409. favorite

  2410. part

  2411. of this

  2412. whole

  2413. encounter

  2414. and it's

  2415. how

  2416. Jesus

  2417. brings

  2418. this

  2419. conversation

  2420. with the

  2421. Pharisees

  2422. to a

  2423. close

  2424. and it's

  2425. an

  2426. absolute

  2427. mic drop

  2428. moment

  2429. then

  2430. Jesus

  2431. said

  2432. to

  2433. them

  2434. the

  2435. son

  2436. of

  2437. man

  2438. is

  2439. lord

  2440. of

  2441. the

  2442. Sabbath

  2443. the

  2444. son

  2445. of

  2446. man

  2447. is

  2448. lord

  2449. of

  2450. the

  2451. Sabbath

  2452. let's

  2453. think about

  2454. this title

  2455. of

  2456. lord

  2457. what does

  2458. it mean

  2459. to be

  2460. the

  2461. lord

  2462. of

  2463. something

  2464. if

  2465. you're

  2466. the

  2467. lord

  2468. of

  2469. the

  2470. manor

  2471. it

  2472. means

  2473. that

  2474. you

  2475. are

  2476. the

  2477. one

  2478. in

  2479. charge

  2480. of

  2481. the

  2482. house

  2483. you're

  2484. the

  2485. top

  2486. guy

  2487. you're

  2488. the

  2489. home

  2490. owner

  2491. it's

  2492. your

  2493. house

  2494. it's

  2495. your

  2496. manor

  2497. and

  2498. everything

  2499. in it

  2500. and everyone

  2501. in it

  2502. is under

  2503. your

  2504. authority

  2505. if you're

  2506. the lord

  2507. of the

  2508. land

  2509. what does

  2510. it mean

  2511. to be

  2512. the lord

  2513. of the

  2514. land

  2515. it means

  2516. you're

  2517. the

  2518. top

  2519. guy

  2520. it means

  2521. that

  2522. you're

  2523. the

  2524. one

  2525. in

  2526. charge

  2527. of

  2528. that

  2529. land

  2530. it's

  2531. your

  2532. land

  2533. and

  2534. everything

  2535. that

  2536. goes

  2537. on

  2538. in

  2539. it

  2540. that's

  2541. under

  2542. your

  2543. jurisdiction

  2544. that's

  2545. under

  2546. your

  2547. charge

  2548. means

  2549. you

  2550. make

  2551. the

  2552. rules

  2553. in

  2554. the

  2555. land

  2556. you're

  2557. the

  2558. top

  2559. judge

  2560. in

  2561. the

  2562. land

  2563. and

  2564. so

  2565. what

  2566. does

  2567. it

  2568. mean

  2569. to be

  2570. lord

  2571. of

  2572. the

  2573. sabbath

  2574. jesus

  2575. is

  2576. claiming

  2577. to be

  2578. the

  2579. one

  2580. in

  2581. charge

  2582. of

  2583. the

  2584. sabbath

  2585. the

  2586. one

  2587. to

  2588. whom

  2589. the

  2590. sabbath

  2591. belongs

  2592. all

  2593. things

  2594. sabbath

  2595. are

  2596. under

  2597. his

  2598. authority

  2599. under

  2600. his

  2601. jurisdiction

  2602. it

  2603. means

  2604. he

  2605. makes

  2606. the

  2607. rules

  2608. regarding

  2609. the

  2610. sabbath

  2611. as

  2612. jesus

  2613. says

  2614. this

  2615. think

  2616. about

  2617. how

  2618. the

  2619. pharisees

  2620. might

  2621. have

  2622. been

  2623. feeling

  2624. and

  2625. the

  2626. teachers

  2627. of

  2628. the

  2629. law

  2630. i

  2631. mean

  2632. they

  2633. saw

  2634. themselves

  2635. as

  2636. the

  2637. experts

  2638. and

  2639. the

  2640. judges

  2641. of

  2642. everything

  2643. sabbath

  2644. related

  2645. they

  2646. were

  2647. like

  2648. sabbath

  2649. police

  2650. going

  2651. to

  2652. and

  2653. fro

  2654. and

  2655. reminding

  2656. the

  2657. people

  2658. of

  2659. exactly

  2660. what

  2661. they

  2662. could

  2663. and

  2664. could

  2665. not

  2666. do

  2667. enforcing

  2668. all

  2669. those

  2670. rules

  2671. and

  2672. regulations

  2673. and

  2674. giving

  2675. their

  2676. legal

  2677. interpretations

  2678. jesus

  2679. looks

  2680. him

  2681. right

  2682. in

  2683. the

  2684. face

  2685. and

  2686. says

  2687. no

  2688. i

  2689. am

  2690. the

  2691. lord

  2692. of

  2693. the

  2694. sabbath

  2695. you

  2696. guys

  2697. don't

  2698. tell

  2699. me

  2700. how

  2701. to

  2702. keep

  2703. the

  2704. sabbath

  2705. i

  2706. will

  2707. tell

  2708. you

  2709. the

  2710. true

  2711. purpose

  2712. and

  2713. meaning

  2714. of

  2715. the

  2716. sabbath

  2717. and

  2718. how

  2719. you've

  2720. missed

  2721. it

  2722. back

  2723. to

  2724. john

  2725. macarthur

  2726. he

  2727. had

  2728. another

  2729. great

  2730. piece

  2731. of

  2732. his

  2733. sermon

  2734. here

  2735. jesus

  2736. dropped

  2737. the

  2738. bomb

  2739. of

  2740. all

  2741. bombs

  2742. on

  2743. their

  2744. self

  2745. righteous

  2746. minds

  2747. i

  2748. am

  2749. the

  2750. sovereign

  2751. ruler

  2752. over

  2753. the

  2754. sabbath

  2755. i

  2756. am

  2757. the

  2758. sovereign

  2759. of

  2760. this

  2761. day

  2762. i

  2763. designed

  2764. this

  2765. day

  2766. i'm

  2767. the

  2768. creator

  2769. doesn't

  2770. john

  2771. say

  2772. that

  2773. at

  2774. the

  2775. beginning

  2776. of

  2777. his

  2778. gospel

  2779. everything

  2780. was

  2781. made

  2782. by

  2783. him

  2784. jesus

  2785. and

  2786. without

  2787. him

  2788. jesus

  2789. was

  2790. not

  2791. anything

  2792. made

  2793. and

  2794. so

  2795. it

  2796. was

  2797. he

  2798. jesus

  2799. who

  2800. ceased

  2801. to

  2802. work

  2803. on

  2804. that

  2805. very

  2806. first

  2807. sabbath

  2808. it

  2809. was

  2810. he

  2811. who

  2812. ordained

  2813. this

  2814. day

  2815. to be

  2816. blessed

  2817. and

  2818. separated

  2819. from

  2820. work

  2821. i

  2822. am

  2823. the

  2824. sovereign

  2825. of

  2826. this

  2827. day

  2828. i

  2829. am

  2830. the

  2831. interpreter

  2832. of

  2833. the

  2834. will

  2835. of

  2836. god

  2837. for

  2838. this

  2839. day

  2840. you

  2841. do

  2842. not

  2843. rule

  2844. the

  2845. sabbath

  2846. you

  2847. do

  2848. not

  2849. set

  2850. the

  2851. standards

  2852. of

  2853. behavior

  2854. for

  2855. the

  2856. sabbath

  2857. i

  2858. do

  2859. that's

  2860. from

  2861. macarthur

  2862. wow

  2863. what a

  2864. claim

  2865. and as

  2866. we'll

  2867. see next

  2868. sunday

  2869. this

  2870. claim

  2871. and

  2872. what

  2873. we're

  2874. about

  2875. to

  2876. read

  2877. of

  2878. next

  2879. is

  2880. enough

  2881. to

  2882. make

  2883. the

  2884. pharisees

  2885. and

  2886. the

  2887. teachers

  2888. of

  2889. the

  2890. law

  2891. furious

  2892. with

  2893. jesus

  2894. well

  2895. there's

  2896. one

  2897. thing

  2898. we

  2899. still

  2900. haven't

  2901. talked

  2902. about

  2903. and

  2904. it's

  2905. whether

  2906. we

  2907. as

  2908. followers

  2909. of

  2910. jesus

  2911. today

  2912. must

  2913. keep

  2914. the

  2915. sabbath

  2916. and

  2917. if

  2918. so

  2919. how

  2920. is

  2921. sunday

  2922. now

  2923. to

  2924. be

  2925. our

  2926. sabbath

  2927. or

  2928. was

  2929. the

  2930. sabbath

  2931. commandment

  2932. only

  2933. fit

  2934. to

  2935. the

  2936. old

  2937. covenant

  2938. lord

  2939. willing

  2940. we're

  2941. going to

  2942. talk

  2943. about

  2944. all

  2945. that

  2946. next

  2947. sunday

  2948. but

  2949. for

  2950. today

  2951. let

  2952. us

  2953. fix

  2954. our

  2955. eyes

  2956. on

  2957. jesus

  2958. the

  2959. lord

  2960. of

  2961. the

  2962. sabbath

  2963. our

  2964. compassionate

  2965. and

  2966. loving

  2967. god

  2968. who

  2969. stands

  2970. against

  2971. heartless

  2972. empty

  2973. burdensome

  2974. religion

  2975. let us

  2976. fix our

  2977. eyes on

  2978. him who

  2979. desires a

  2980. love

  2981. relationship

  2982. with us

  2983. and not

  2984. just a

  2985. ritual

  2986. sacrifice

  2987. from us

  2988. let's

  2989. pray

  2990. lord jesus

  2991. we thank

  2992. you

  2993. that we

  2994. got to

  2995. just see

  2996. a little

  2997. bit this

  2998. morning

  2999. of what

  3000. happened

  3001. those

  3002. many years

  3003. ago

  3004. as you

  3005. walked

  3006. through the

  3007. fields

  3008. with your

  3009. disciples

  3010. and we

  3011. thank you

  3012. that that's

  3013. who you

  3014. are

  3015. the lord

  3016. of the

  3017. sabbath

  3018. the lord

  3019. of all

  3020. and we

  3021. give you

  3022. praise

  3023. and we

  3024. thank you

  3025. for your

  3026. love for

  3027. us

  3028. your compassion

  3029. towards us

  3030. we ask

  3031. that you

  3032. would continue

  3033. to teach

  3034. us and

  3035. to work

  3036. in us

  3037. what is

  3038. pleasing

  3039. to you

  3040. for your

  3041. glory

  3042. amen

  3043. and

  3044. and

  3045. and
