  1. All right, well this morning we are continuing our way through the Gospel of Luke, which tells

  2. ! the story of Jesus. And we're in Luke chapter 6. And we've started to see how conflict is ensuing

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  3. ! between Jesus and the Pharisees. First it was over the issue of eating with sinners and religious fasting.

  4. Then we heard about how Jesus had a run-in with the Pharisees on the Sabbath day in the grain fields.

  5. And now Luke is going to tell us about another incident which took place between

  6. Jesus and the Pharisees on the Sabbath day. We are in Luke chapter 6, verse 6.

    Luke 6:6

  7. On another Sabbath, Jesus went into the synagogue and was teaching. And a man was there whose right

  8. hand was shriveled. As we've talked about in the past few messages, the Sabbath was the seventh day of

  9. the week, Saturday. And it was a normal, respected, and common practice for Jews to gather at the local

  10. synagogue on this day. Scripture was read aloud and there was prayer. And what's interesting is that

  11. there was no specific command given in the Old Testament for them to have synagogues or to meet at the synagogue

  12. like this. It was kind of a later development during the years of the exile. And then it continued on after

  13. that. So attendance was common, but not everyone went every week. Participation was more regular among men

  14. than women. And it wasn't structured as a whole family gathering like church in modern times has been.

  15. The elderly and the very young would often stay home. And regular attendance was more common among those

  16. who lived in towns or cities. For those Jews living in rural areas, travel on the Sabbath was limited by

  17. tradition to about 2,000 cubits or roughly a kilometer. And so if the nearest synagogue was beyond that

  18. distance, it was kind of understood that you would just stay home and observe the Sabbath at home.

  19. And so sometimes we imagine going to the synagogue was kind of like the Old Testament version of going

  20. to church on Sundays. But in reality, there were significant differences. We see in the gospel accounts,

  21. though, that Jesus deliberately used this tradition, this cultural thing, as part of how he proclaimed the

  22. word of God. He went from town to town, and he read scripture, and he taught, and he proclaimed the

  23. word of God in the synagogues on the Sabbath days. And so you can almost imagine what this might have been

  24. like in those days. Word begins to spread around town that Jesus is on his way to your town. And you've

  25. heard that he typically speaks in the synagogue on the Sabbath day. Maybe you never went to see Jesus

  26. preach out at the lake like some people did, but this is now your chance to see him and to hear him in

  27. person. Maybe you weren't even planning on going to the synagogue this week, where it had been a while.

  28. But this Sabbath day, you'll be there, because there's a special and famous guest speaker coming to town.

  29. Well, this is probably one of the reasons why the Pharisees and the teachers of the law envied Jesus so much.

  30. Because when he comes to town and speaks, attendance at the synagogue suddenly goes through the roof.

  31. So this is some of the cultural background to all of this, and Luke sets the scene.

  32. We notice Luke's description of this man's condition. His right hand was shriveled.

  33. That's probably significant that it was his right hand. I had to look this up, but roughly 90% of people

  34. on earth are right-handed. So it's the dominant hand. It's the good hand of most. And this should

  35. make us think of what life has probably been like for this man. We don't know how long he's had this

  36. condition or how it happened, but it's probably affected his ability to work and to do a lot of

  37. different things. He has probably, for many things, become dependent on others, unable to do those things

  38. for himself. And then there are the social stigmas that often people carry towards others who have

  39. visible disabilities. People are often uncomfortable or awkward around them. What are they thinking?

  40. They're thinking, look at his hand. I wonder how that happened. If we look closer at the word

  41. shriveled, there's a little more there. The word has also been translated as withered. And the original

  42. word used there is often used in reference to dry land or dried out dead trees or branches.

  43. And so when it's used metaphorically like this to refer to a part of the body, it often indicated that

  44. the part of the body was no good anymore, unable to be used, possibly shrunken, deformed,

  45. damaged, and likely immobile or paralyzed. Now there's all kinds of reasons why a person might come to

  46. have a withered or shriveled hand like this. It could be that way because of nerve damage or because of a

  47. stroke. It could happen because of poor blood flow or from damage related to an injury or an infection.

  48. Probably most of us have seen someone with a shriveled hand and it kind of has an unnatural look to it.

  49. And the reason is owing to how all of those different causes I just mentioned affect the muscles

  50. muscles and tendons and ligaments in the hand. When it comes to muscles, they come in pairs. There are the

  51. flexors which open the hand and then there are the extensors which help with closing the hand. And so if

  52. the extensors become weak or waste away first and the flexors overpower them, they kind of pull the fingers

  53. back into a bent position and they can get stuck like that. And if it's stuck like that in that curl

  54. position for weeks or months, the tendons and ligaments actually physically shorten. And it's called

  55. contracture. It makes the hand stiff and not just weak. And so people who have this are likely to have it

  56. for life because of the underlying causes, whether nerve damage or loss of control, contracture of

  57. ligaments and tendons. Sometimes it's possible to get some of that movement back through exercise and

  58. physio, but oftentimes not. And so we can only imagine how frustrating and how difficult life must have been

  59. for this man. As he goes about his life, almost everyone around him has two good hands and seems

  60. that they take it for granted. Meanwhile, he's struggling to get by with only one. And so Jesus is

  61. there and he's teaching. And this man with the shriveled hand is there. And the Pharisees and the teachers of

  62. the law are also there. And we notice that they are there for a very specific purpose. Verse 7,

  63. the Pharisees and the teachers of the law looking for a reason to accuse Jesus. So they watched him

  64. closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. So this is very deliberate. They are looking for a reason

  65. to accuse Jesus. And that word accuse here is key. In the original language this was written in, it's

  66. actually derived from a technical legal term. They were looking for legal grounds to haul Jesus into a

  67. religious court kind of scenario for breaking the law. Luke says they watched him closely.

  68. This is very intentional. They are after Jesus. They're lurking like hunters on a mission. Luke tells us

  69. they already had in mind what the grounds of their accusation would be. They're hoping to charge Jesus

  70. with working on the Sabbath, breaking the Sabbath law. That's what this is about.

  71. I mentioned it a few sermons ago, but the Jewish rabbis over the centuries had piled up a massive

  72. amount of man-made religious rules that they added on to help people keep the Sabbath commandment.

  73. At least they thought it was helping. They turned Sabbath keeping into this sort of hyper-legalistic

  74. religion of its own. And if you missed that message and want to hear more about that, you can find it on

  75. the church website. It was May 18th and it's titled Lord of the Sabbath. But one of the rules that they

  76. had added was that when it comes to doing the work of a doctor or nurse on the Sabbath day, you were only

  77. permitted to do as much as needed to save a person's life or to keep them from dying. Anything beyond that

  78. that was aimed at just helping them generally improve, you had to wait till Sunday to do that work for them.

  79. And so this kind of helps us understand the mindset that they would have had toward this man

  80. with the withered hand. It's visible and obvious to everyone that this man has a debilitating condition,

  81. but that's not life-threatening. At least that's what they're thinking. And so if Jesus heals this man

  82. today, we're going to get him on charges of working on the Sabbath.

  83. But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand,

  84. get up and stand in front of everyone. So he got up and stood there.

  85. Jesus knew what they were thinking. This is something that we see about Jesus in all of the

  86. gospel accounts. And it's not just that he has a very sharp intuition or keen powers of deduction.

  87. Jesus possesses knowledge of precisely what people are thinking. He demonstrates it time and time again.

  88. He knows what's in the hearts of people, their very thoughts. And he often responds to what they are

  89. thinking. And amazingly, he's always right. He has this knowledge because of who he is. This is divine

  90. knowledge. So he knew what they were thinking. And he said to the man with the shriveled hand,

  91. get up and stand in front of everyone. And so he got up and stood there.

  92. Jesus knows they're going to try to charge him with working on the Sabbath if he heals the man.

  93. And so what does Jesus do? He's going to heal the man.

  94. He's not afraid of the Pharisees or the teachers of the law one bit.

  95. Neither is he worried about being guilty of breaking the Sabbath.

  96. Just a few verses back, what did Jesus say to them?

  97. He said,

  98. In other words, I'm in charge of the Sabbath.

  99. I know what's right and what's wrong when it comes to the Sabbath. It's my commandment.

  100. He's not intimidated one bit by the Pharisees.

  101. He calls the man to get up and stand in front of everyone

  102. so that everyone can see

  103. what he's about to do.

  104. Now at this point, we do well to take a peek

  105. at Matthew's account. We're looking at Luke's account,

  106. but let's just flip over to Matthew's account.

  107. Chapter 12, verse 10.

  108. It would seem that in this moment

  109. as this man stands in front of everyone

  110. before Jesus says or does anything,

  111. the Pharisees

  112. open their mouth and

  113. challenge Jesus.

  114. They asked him,

  115. Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?

  116. And this is not a wondering.

  117. This is a rhetorical question.

  118. It's a trap.

  119. Of course, if Jesus says,

  120. Yes, it's lawful to heal on the Sabbath,

  121. then he'll be contradicting

  122. the authority and laws

  123. of countless Jewish rabbis,

  124. both past and present,

  125. as well as the current

  126. law of the land,

  127. and he will be liable to judgment.

  128. As I said earlier,

  129. for the Pharisees,

  130. this is already an established law.

  131. Only in cases of life and death

  132. can medical work be done

  133. on the Sabbath.

  134. They're ready to put Jesus

  135. on trial here

  136. and haul him before the court,

  137. before the judge.

  138. And so if he answers,

  139. Yes, it is lawful

  140. to heal on the Sabbath.

  141. There could be consequences.

  142. On the other hand,

  143. if he answers,

  144. No,

  145. it's not lawful.

  146. You're right.

  147. This can wait until tomorrow.

  148. Well, then he's basically

  149. affirming that the Pharisees

  150. are right.

  151. Their interpretation,

  152. their application

  153. of all these rules

  154. and regulations

  155. is right.

  156. This would really undermine

  157. Jesus' credibility

  158. when you think about it,

  159. because can we trust his teaching

  160. if he almost accidentally

  161. broke the Sabbath law?

  162. He should have known

  163. if he really is the Messiah.

  164. So how does Jesus respond

  165. to this trap?

  166. We'll stick with Matthew's account

  167. for just a moment longer.

  168. Jesus said to them,

  169. If any of you has a sheep

  170. and it falls into a pit

  171. on the Sabbath,

  172. will you not take hold of it

  173. and lift it out?

  174. How much more valuable

  175. is a person

  176. than a sheep?

  177. Therefore, it is lawful

  178. to do good

  179. on the Sabbath.

  180. So Jesus argues

  181. from the lesser

  182. to the greater,

  183. from the less important

  184. to the more important.

  185. Nobody there,

  186. if one of their animals

  187. had broken loose

  188. from the pen

  189. and fallen into a pit,

  190. none of them

  191. would have said,

  192. Oh man,

  193. well,

  194. I guess we'll just have to

  195. leave it there

  196. until tomorrow

  197. because today's

  198. the Sabbath day.

  199. If God really wants us

  200. to have him,

  201. then that'll still be there

  202. alive tomorrow.

  203. We have to honor him first,

  204. right?

  205. We'll come back

  206. at sundown.

  207. None of them

  208. would have done that.

  209. Just leaving that

  210. poor animal

  211. to suffer

  212. bleeding away

  213. helplessly

  214. till the next day.

  215. Everybody knew

  216. that the right thing

  217. to do

  218. was to help

  219. the poor animal

  220. out of the pit

  221. even if it was

  222. the Sabbath day.

  223. Well,

  224. that's different.

  225. They might have been thinking.

  226. That's not the same.

  227. Of course,

  228. we would grab it

  229. and lift it out

  230. because that would be cruel

  231. if we didn't.

  232. It is lawful

  233. to do acts of mercy

  234. on the Sabbath.

  235. And Jesus

  236. basically says,

  237. so you would help

  238. an animal

  239. on the Sabbath day

  240. if it's afflicted,

  241. but you wouldn't help

  242. a human being

  243. on the Sabbath day

  244. who's afflicted.

  245. you don't think

  246. I should heal

  247. this man

  248. right now?

  249. Do you really think

  250. I should wait

  251. till tomorrow?

  252. How much more

  253. valuable

  254. is a person,

  255. a human being,

  256. than a sheep?

  257. It's an amazing

  258. response of Jesus

  259. with just a few

  260. words.

  261. He exposes

  262. the heartless

  263. hypocrisy

  264. and lack

  265. of compassion

  266. that the Pharisees

  267. and the teachers

  268. of the law

  269. have.

  270. He says,

  271. you care more

  272. about animals

  273. than you do

  274. about people.

  275. You care more

  276. about law keeping

  277. and rules

  278. and regulations

  279. and religious

  280. observances

  281. than people.

  282. All right,

  283. back to Luke.

    Luke 6:9

  284. chapter 6,

  285. verse 9.

  286. Then Jesus

  287. said to them,

  288. I ask you,

  289. which is lawful

  290. on the Sabbath?

  291. To do good

  292. or to do evil?

  293. To save life

  294. or to destroy it?

  295. Jesus piles on

  296. this challenge

  297. question of his own

  298. and it's a doozy.

  299. Is it lawful

  300. to do good

  301. on the Sabbath?

  302. Because that's

  303. what I'm about

  304. to do.

  305. in healing

  306. this man.

  307. Or is it lawful

  308. to do evil

  309. on the Sabbath?

  310. Now,

  311. there's two

  312. possible ways

  313. to understand

  314. the second part

  315. of Jesus' question.

  316. Everybody agrees

  317. that doing good,

  318. saving life,

  319. that that relates

  320. to Jesus healing

  321. the man.

  322. Right here

  323. and right now.

  324. But what's not clear

  325. is exactly what

  326. Jesus is contrasting

  327. that with.

  328. one possibility

  329. and this is

  330. what I grew up

  331. thinking

  332. was that Jesus

  333. is saying

  334. to not heal

  335. this man

  336. right here

  337. and now

  338. when it's in

  339. my power to do

  340. it would be evil.

  341. just like it would be

  342. heartless

  343. and cruel

  344. to leave the sheep

  345. in the pit

  346. until tomorrow.

  347. To leave this man

  348. in his affliction

  349. a day longer

  350. for no good reason

  351. would be cruel

  352. and heartless.

  353. Now,

  354. there's a couple

  355. difficulties

  356. with this way

  357. of looking at it.

  358. one of them

  359. is that when we

  360. get to that

  361. second question

  362. to save life

  363. or to destroy it

  364. it almost

  365. doesn't make sense

  366. because it's not

  367. a matter of life

  368. and death.

  369. One explanation

  370. given by some

  371. is that Jesus

  372. is purposely

  373. exaggerating

  374. going to the extreme

  375. save life

  376. or destroy it

  377. in order to make

  378. the point

  379. that it's

  380. that if it's

  381. lawful to save life

  382. then it's lawful

  383. to do any lesser

  384. act of the same

  385. character.

  386. whether healing

  387. or helping someone

  388. who's hurt

  389. or afflicted

  390. and in the same

  391. way

  392. if it's not

  393. lawful to do

  394. evil on the Sabbath

  395. neither is it

  396. lawful to do

  397. any lesser

  398. sort of evil

  399. on the Sabbath.

  400. Like even something

  401. as simple as

  402. just passing by

  403. a person who's

  404. in need

  405. when it's in our

  406. power to help

  407. and there's no

  408. good reason

  409. to pass them by.

  410. Another difficulty

  411. with this interpretation

  412. though is

  413. how do we apply

  414. this?

  415. Is Jesus

  416. really saying

  417. that whenever

  418. we see a need

  419. we do evil

  420. when we don't

  421. stop to meet it?

  422. I got thinking

  423. about this

  424. how many

  425. pleas

  426. for help

  427. from charities

  428. have I ignored

  429. in emails

  430. or in the mail?

  431. how many

  432. broken down

  433. cars

  434. on the side

  435. of the road

  436. have we

  437. driven by

  438. without at least

  439. stopping to ask

  440. and see if they

  441. need assistance?

  442. Is Jesus

  443. really saying

  444. that every time

  445. we fail to

  446. stop and help

  447. we do evil?

  448. We destroy

  449. life?

  450. On the other

  451. hand

  452. there is the

  453. parable of the

  454. Good Samaritan.

  455. In that

  456. parable

  457. Jesus seems

  458. to be exposing

  459. and condemning

  460. the Levite

  461. and the

  462. priest

  463. for just

  464. walking on

  465. by the

  466. wounded man

  467. who is in

  468. need on the

  469. side of the

  470. road.

  471. He seems

  472. to be suggesting

  473. they were

  474. somehow obligated

  475. by their

  476. faith in God

  477. and their

  478. love for God

  479. to stop

  480. in that

  481. moment

  482. and help.

  483. So that's

  484. one interpretation

  485. that Jesus'

  486. questions here

  487. are about

  488. whether he

  489. should heal

  490. or delay

  491. healing

  492. until tomorrow.

  493. Of course

  494. if he would

  495. heal him

  496. then it

  497. would be

  498. that

  499. that would

  500. be the

  501. good

  502. that would

  503. be saving

  504. life

  505. or if he

  506. delays it

  507. till tomorrow

  508. that would

  509. be to do

  510. evil or to

  511. destroy it.

  512. But there's

  513. another way to

  514. understand what

  515. Jesus might be

  516. saying with

  517. these questions.

  518. Could it be

  519. that it's not

  520. about healing

  521. him now

  522. or waiting

  523. till tomorrow?

  524. Could it be

  525. that Jesus

  526. is actually

  527. contrasting

  528. what he's

  529. doing right

  530. now

  531. with what

  532. the Pharisees

  533. are doing

  534. right now?

  535. Like

  536. is it

  537. lawful

  538. on the

  539. Sabbath

  540. to do

  541. good?

  542. Because that's

  543. what I'm

  544. here to do.

  545. That's what

  546. I'm about

  547. to do

  548. for this

  549. man.

  550. Or I

  551. could ask

  552. you a

  553. question.

  554. Is it

  555. lawful

  556. on the

  557. Sabbath

  558. to do

  559. evil?

  560. Because

  561. that's

  562. what you

  563. Pharisees

  564. and teachers

  565. of the

  566. law

  567. are doing

  568. right now.

  569. it's

  570. kind of

  571. a

  572. painfully

  573. obvious

  574. question

  575. to ask

  576. isn't it?

  577. I mean

  578. why even

  579. ask it?

  580. Is it

  581. lawful

  582. to do

  583. evil

  584. on the

  585. Sabbath?

  586. Of course

  587. not.

  588. Who would

  589. answer yes

  590. to that?

  591. Well then

  592. why are you

  593. Pharisees

  594. looking for

  595. a way

  596. to bring

  597. a charge

  598. against me?

  599. What's

  600. your motive

  601. in that?

  602. could it

  603. be that

  604. the question

  605. of Jesus

  606. is simply

  607. intended

  608. to expose

  609. what the

  610. Pharisees

  611. and the

  612. teachers

  613. of the

  614. law

  615. are up

  616. to?

  617. And this

  618. kind of

  619. makes sense

  620. of that

  621. second

  622. question

  623. to save

  624. life

  625. or to

  626. destroy

  627. it.

  628. What

  629. do the

  630. Pharisees

  631. and teachers

  632. of the

  633. law

  634. hope

  635. will come

  636. of this?

  637. What's

  638. their goal?

  639. Well truly

  640. they're looking

  641. for a way

  642. to destroy

  643. Jesus.

  644. That's

  645. not an

  646. exaggeration.

  647. When Mark

  648. wrote his

  649. account of

  650. this he

  651. actually

  652. used a

  653. synonym.

  654. Of course

  655. Jesus probably

  656. said it in

  657. Hebrew or

  658. Aramaic but

  659. then Mark

  660. wrote it

  661. down as

  662. to do

  663. good or

  664. to do

  665. evil,

  666. to save

  667. life or

  668. to kill.

  669. To kill.

  670. And then

  671. Mark sums

  672. it up at

  673. the end

  674. by saying

  675. this.

  676. Then the

  677. Pharisees

  678. went out

  679. and began

  680. to plot

  681. with the

  682. Herodians

  683. how they

  684. might

  685. kill

  686. Jesus.

  687. And so

  688. that's the

  689. other

  690. interpretation

  691. that Jesus

  692. questions are

  693. not about

  694. healing now

  695. versus delaying

  696. healing till

  697. tomorrow but

  698. rather about

  699. doing good,

  700. saving life

  701. which is what

  702. Jesus is here

  703. to do on the

  704. Sabbath versus

  705. doing evil and

  706. plotting to

  707. kill, to

  708. destroy life which

  709. is what the

  710. Pharisees and

  711. teachers of the

  712. law are doing

  713. on the Sabbath.

  714. Well in this

  715. moment Jesus

  716. asks these two

  717. questions and

  718. what's the

  719. response of the

  720. Pharisees?

  721. It says in

  722. verse 9,

  723. Jesus looked

  724. around at

  725. them all.

  726. It's like he

  727. was giving

  728. them a chance

  729. to answer.

  730. What's the

  731. answer?

  732. Which is

  733. lawful?

  734. To do

  735. good or to

  736. do evil?

  737. Mark tells

  738. us that in

  739. this moment

  740. the Pharisees

  741. remained silent.

  742. They didn't

  743. say a word.

  744. And Mark is

  745. the only one

  746. who tells us

  747. just a little

  748. of what Jesus

  749. was thinking

  750. and feeling

  751. in this

  752. moment.

  753. Jesus looked

  754. around at

  755. them in

  756. anger and

  757. deeply distressed

  758. at their

  759. stubborn hearts.

  760. Deeply distressed

  761. at their

  762. stubborn hearts.

  763. Jesus was

  764. angry with a

  765. righteous and

  766. holy anger in

  767. this moment.

  768. He was

  769. deeply distressed

  770. at the

  771. stubbornness in

  772. their hearts.

  773. the answer

  774. to the

  775. question is

  776. obvious.

  777. Is it

  778. lawful on

  779. the Sabbath

  780. to do good

  781. or to do

  782. evil?

  783. Jesus tells

  784. them straight

  785. up the

  786. answer.

  787. In Matthew's

  788. gospel we

  789. read that he

  790. said it is

  791. lawful to

  792. do good on

  793. the Sabbath.

  794. And yet they

  795. remained silent.

  796. They didn't

  797. say a word.

  798. Of course

  799. Jesus kind

  800. of had them

  801. in a bit of

  802. a trap.

  803. with the

  804. question that

  805. he asked

  806. them.

  807. If they

  808. were to say

  809. yeah Jesus

  810. you're right

  811. that would be

  812. pretty humiliating

  813. to them.

  814. It would show

  815. that Jesus

  816. was right

  817. about them.

  818. It would

  819. show that

  820. they really

  821. did lack

  822. compassion.

  823. It would

  824. show that

  825. they had been

  826. wrong about

  827. the Sabbath

  828. and they

  829. couldn't admit

  830. that.

  831. They were the

  832. Pharisees.

  833. They were the

  834. teachers of the

  835. law.

  836. They were the

  837. experts.

  838. Or so they

  839. thought.

  840. And if the

  841. problem was that

  842. everybody was

  843. going to Jesus

  844. instead of to

  845. them well

  846. admitting that

  847. they were wrong

  848. and Jesus was

  849. right would

  850. probably just

  851. make it worse.

  852. More people

  853. would keep

  854. going to

  855. Jesus instead

  856. of to them.

  857. And they

  858. knew they

  859. couldn't win

  860. this argument

  861. with Jesus

  862. either and

  863. just double

  864. down and

  865. say no

  866. you're wrong.

  867. That would

  868. only further

  869. expose them

  870. as the

  871. heartless

  872. legalistic

  873. hypocrites

  874. that they

  875. were.

  876. Imagine this.

  877. What are they

  878. going to do?

  879. Are they

  880. going to

  881. escort the

  882. man with

  883. the withered

  884. hand out

  885. the door

  886. in front of

  887. everyone to

  888. prevent him

  889. from being

  890. healed?

  891. Because it's

  892. the Sabbath

  893. day?

  894. Well that

  895. wouldn't go

  896. over well with

  897. the people.

  898. And again

  899. same thing.

  900. People are

  901. going to start

  902. going to Jesus

  903. even more.

  904. He's the one

  905. who has

  906. compassion.

  907. He looked

  908. around at

  909. them all

  910. and then

  911. said to

  912. the man

  913. stretch out

  914. your hand.

  915. He did

  916. so and

  917. his hand

  918. was completely

  919. restored.

  920. In

  921. Matthew's

  922. gospel it

  923. says he

  924. stretched it

  925. out and it

  926. was completely

  927. restored just

  928. as sound

  929. as the

  930. other.

  931. What a

  932. sight that

  933. must have

  934. been.

  935. And

  936. everybody

  937. there saw

  938. it.

  939. Including the

  940. Pharisees and

  941. the teachers

  942. of the law.

  943. We talked

  944. earlier about

  945. what kinds of

  946. things could

  947. cause this

  948. condition and

  949. how whatever

  950. the cause

  951. there was that

  952. effect of the

  953. muscles atrophying

  954. and weakening

  955. and the

  956. ligaments and

  957. tendons physically

  958. shortening and

  959. becoming stiff.

  960. Jesus doesn't

  961. seem to lay a

  962. finger on the

  963. man.

  964. He simply

  965. says stretch

  966. out your

  967. hand.

  968. And as he

  969. does God's

  970. power flows

  971. through Jesus

  972. and a miracle

  973. takes place.

  974. The muscles,

  975. tendons,

  976. ligaments are

  977. completely

  978. instantly

  979. restored and

  980. unstiffened.

  981. His hand is

  982. strong enough

  983. that he can

  984. open and close

  985. it just the

  986. same as he

  987. can with the

  988. other one.

  989. No physio

  990. needed.

  991. God's

  992. power of

  993. God.

  994. God's

  995. power of

  996. life at

  997. work.

  998. What a

  999. wonderful day

  1000. for that

  1001. poor man

  1002. with the

  1003. withered hand.

  1004. No doubt a

  1005. day of great

  1006. joy,

  1007. probably a

  1008. day that he

  1009. would never

  1010. forget.

  1011. It was a

  1012. day that he

  1013. got his life

  1014. back the way

  1015. that it was

  1016. before.

  1017. It doesn't

  1018. talk about him

  1019. jumping up and

  1020. praising God

  1021. here, but

  1022. he probably

  1023. was.

  1024. Now what

  1025. should the

  1026. response of

  1027. the Pharisees

  1028. be that

  1029. this healing

  1030. has taken

  1031. place?

  1032. Well, now

  1033. is the time

  1034. to finally

  1035. admit you

  1036. were right,

  1037. Jesus.

  1038. We were

  1039. wrong.

  1040. Clearly, if

  1041. God's power to

  1042. heal is

  1043. unleashed

  1044. through your

  1045. words, then

  1046. what you say

  1047. about the

  1048. Sabbath is

  1049. right.

  1050. We're off.

  1051. We're wrong.

  1052. But no.

  1053. What's their

  1054. response?

  1055. Verse 11.

  1056. But the

  1057. Pharisees and

  1058. the teachers

  1059. of the law

  1060. were furious

  1061. and began

  1062. to discuss

  1063. with one

  1064. another what

  1065. they might

  1066. do to

  1067. Jesus.

  1068. They were

  1069. furious.

  1070. Luke's being

  1071. a little

  1072. discreet here.

  1073. Both Matthew

  1074. and Mark,

  1075. as I mentioned

  1076. earlier, spell

  1077. it out

  1078. clearly.

  1079. The Pharisees

  1080. went out

  1081. and plotted

  1082. how they

  1083. might kill

  1084. Jesus.

  1085. We want

  1086. him dead.

  1087. This reveals

  1088. the ugliness

  1089. and the

  1090. phoniness

  1091. of the

  1092. religion

  1093. of the

  1094. Pharisees.

  1095. Did they

  1096. really know

  1097. God?

  1098. Did they

  1099. really love

  1100. God?

  1101. Did they

  1102. really desire

  1103. to honor

  1104. God by

  1105. obeying

  1106. his commandments?

  1107. Was this

  1108. really about

  1109. what was

  1110. truly good

  1111. and right

  1112. versus what

  1113. was truly

  1114. wrong and

  1115. evil?

  1116. One

  1117. commentator

  1118. that I

  1119. read this

  1120. week said

  1121. it this

  1122. way.

  1123. It's kind

  1124. of a

  1125. scholarly

  1126. academic

  1127. quote,

  1128. but it

  1129. just stuck

  1130. in my

  1131. mind.

  1132. He said,

  1133. the religious

  1134. mind is a

  1135. curious thing.

  1136. It is not

  1137. necessarily

  1138. interested in

  1139. common morality.

  1140. It's not

  1141. interested so

  1142. much in

  1143. just generally

  1144. what's right

  1145. and what's

  1146. wrong.

  1147. Still less

  1148. is the

  1149. religious

  1150. mind

  1151. interested

  1152. in relieving

  1153. human misery

  1154. and affliction.

  1155. It's

  1156. interested in

  1157. keeping

  1158. rules,

  1159. particularly

  1160. the rules

  1161. which spring

  1162. from its

  1163. own cherished

  1164. interpretations

  1165. of scripture

  1166. or tradition.

  1167. And to

  1168. these

  1169. interpretations

  1170. it will

  1171. attribute

  1172. the inflexible

  1173. authority

  1174. of God

  1175. himself.

  1176. Let

  1177. God

  1178. incarnate,

  1179. that word

  1180. incarnate

  1181. means

  1182. in flesh,

  1183. let God

  1184. in human

  1185. flesh,

  1186. that's

  1187. Jesus,

  1188. come down,

  1189. let God

  1190. incarnate

  1191. contrary

  1192. to its

  1193. interpretations

  1194. interpose

  1195. with a

  1196. miracle of

  1197. divine

  1198. goodness to

  1199. relieve human

  1200. misery.

  1201. That's the

  1202. healing of

  1203. this man.

  1204. Then

  1205. instead of

  1206. revising

  1207. its

  1208. interpretations,

  1209. the

  1210. religious

  1211. mind will

  1212. plan to

  1213. stop such

  1214. miracles

  1215. happening

  1216. again.

  1217. In

  1218. other

  1219. words,

  1220. we've

  1221. become so

  1222. committed

  1223. to our

  1224. rules and

  1225. our cherished

  1226. interpretations

  1227. that God

  1228. himself doing

  1229. a miracle of

  1230. mercy right

  1231. in front of

  1232. our eyes to

  1233. show us the

  1234. error of our

  1235. ways is not

  1236. enough to

  1237. change our

  1238. minds.

  1239. We are so

  1240. committed to

  1241. our religion

  1242. and rules

  1243. that we

  1244. must make

  1245. sure miracles

  1246. such as

  1247. these do

  1248. not happen

  1249. again.

  1250. We need

  1251. to stop

  1252. Jesus.

  1253. We have

  1254. to take

  1255. him out.

  1256. Wow.

  1257. What are we

  1258. to take from

  1259. all this?

  1260. Well, if you

  1261. missed my last

  1262. two messages on

  1263. the Sabbath,

  1264. I'd encourage

  1265. you to go to

  1266. our church

  1267. website and

  1268. listen to

  1269. them.

  1270. They talk

  1271. more in

  1272. depth about

  1273. what the

  1274. Sabbath had

  1275. become in

  1276. Jewish culture

  1277. and in

  1278. my last

  1279. message I

  1280. specifically

  1281. answered the

  1282. question of

  1283. whether we

  1284. as Christians

  1285. should keep

  1286. the Sabbath

  1287. and if

  1288. so, how.

  1289. So I'm

  1290. not going to

  1291. go back and

  1292. preach that

  1293. message again.

  1294. But one

  1295. thing I think

  1296. we see

  1297. clearly here

  1298. is the

  1299. compassionate

  1300. heart of

  1301. Jesus for

  1302. us in

  1303. contrast to

  1304. the dark,

  1305. ugly,

  1306. cold,

  1307. religious

  1308. heart of

  1309. the

  1310. Pharisees.

  1311. And I

  1312. think we're

  1313. being called

  1314. by God

  1315. through these

  1316. words,

  1317. are we

  1318. not?

  1319. To

  1320. examine

  1321. ourselves,

  1322. to see if

  1323. there is any

  1324. of that

  1325. attitude that

  1326. they had,

  1327. that heart

  1328. that they

  1329. had in

  1330. us.

  1331. And I

  1332. think we're

  1333. being called

  1334. to take

  1335. notice of

  1336. this wonderful

  1337. Savior,

  1338. Jesus,

  1339. who is

  1340. showing us

  1341. the kind of

  1342. relationship that

  1343. God has

  1344. always wanted

  1345. with us.

  1346. Not this

  1347. cold and

  1348. dead,

  1349. rule-keeping

  1350. kind of

  1351. relationship,

  1352. but this

  1353. living,

  1354. compassionate,

  1355. heart-engaged

  1356. relationship where

  1357. true love

  1358. reigns supreme.

  1359. A number

  1360. of the

  1361. different

  1362. people I

  1363. read this

  1364. week pointed

  1365. back to

  1366. what God

  1367. said through

  1368. Isaiah the

  1369. prophet.

  1370. And these

  1371. are powerful

  1372. words coming

  1373. from hundreds

  1374. of years

  1375. before Jesus

  1376. came to the

  1377. people of

  1378. Israel.

  1379. God speaks

  1380. through Isaiah

  1381. back then,

  1382. and this is

  1383. what God

  1384. says to

  1385. Israel.

  1386. He says,

  1387. the multitude

  1388. of your

  1389. sacrifices,

  1390. what are

  1391. they to

  1392. me?

  1393. Says

  1394. the Lord.

  1395. I have

  1396. more than

  1397. enough of

  1398. burnt

  1399. offerings,

  1400. of rams,

  1401. and the

  1402. fat of

  1403. fattened

  1404. animals.

  1405. I have

  1406. no pleasure

  1407. in the

  1408. blood of

  1409. bulls,

  1410. and lambs,

  1411. and goats.

  1412. When you

  1413. come to

  1414. appear before

  1415. me,

  1416. who has

  1417. asked this

  1418. of you,

  1419. this trampling

  1420. of my

  1421. courts?

  1422. Stop

  1423. bringing

  1424. meaningless

  1425. offerings.

  1426. Your

  1427. incense is

  1428. detestable

  1429. to me.

  1430. new

  1431. moons,

  1432. sabbaths,

  1433. and

  1434. convocations,

  1435. I cannot

  1436. bear your

  1437. worthless

  1438. assemblies.

  1439. Your

  1440. new

  1441. moon

  1442. feasts,

  1443. and your

  1444. appointed

  1445. festivals,

  1446. I hate

  1447. with all

  1448. my being.

  1449. They have

  1450. become a

  1451. burden to

  1452. me.

  1453. I am

  1454. weary of

  1455. bearing

  1456. them.

  1457. When you

  1458. spread out

  1459. your hands

  1460. in prayer,

  1461. I hide

  1462. my eyes

  1463. from you.

  1464. even when

  1465. you offer

  1466. many prayers,

  1467. I am

  1468. not

  1469. listening.

  1470. Why?

  1471. Your

  1472. hands are

  1473. full of

  1474. blood.

  1475. Wash

  1476. and make

  1477. yourselves

  1478. clean.

  1479. Take your

  1480. evil deeds

  1481. out of my

  1482. sight.

  1483. Stop

  1484. doing wrong.

  1485. Learn to

  1486. do right.

  1487. Seek

  1488. justice.

  1489. Defend

  1490. the oppressed.

  1491. Take up the

  1492. cause of the

  1493. fatherless.

  1494. Plead the

  1495. case of

  1496. the widow.

  1497. These are

  1498. the words of

  1499. God himself

  1500. to Israel

  1501. long ago.

  1502. Wow.

  1503. God does

  1504. not want

  1505. empty-hearted,

  1506. hypocritical,

  1507. religious

  1508. behavior

  1509. from anyone.

  1510. We have to

  1511. remember that

  1512. God in the

  1513. Old Testament

  1514. law,

  1515. given through

  1516. Moses,

  1517. commanded that

  1518. all of these

  1519. things be

  1520. done.

  1521. That the

  1522. Sabbath be

  1523. kept,

  1524. that sacrifices

  1525. of these

  1526. kinds be

  1527. offered,

  1528. that the

  1529. people assemble

  1530. for these

  1531. regular

  1532. festivals and

  1533. feasts,

  1534. that they

  1535. pray.

  1536. God commanded

  1537. those things,

  1538. and yet God

  1539. says, I hate

  1540. all of these

  1541. things that

  1542. you're doing.

  1543. I'm weary

  1544. of them.

  1545. They burden

  1546. me.

  1547. Stop doing

  1548. them.

  1549. They are

  1550. meaningless to

  1551. me.

  1552. They are

  1553. worthless to

  1554. me.

  1555. Why?

  1556. Because

  1557. meanwhile,

  1558. you're killing

  1559. each other,

  1560. living wicked

  1561. lives,

  1562. doing all

  1563. kinds of

  1564. evil deeds

  1565. and perverting

  1566. justice.

  1567. You're

  1568. oppressing

  1569. the weak.

  1570. You're taking

  1571. advantage of

  1572. others.

  1573. You're doing

  1574. nothing to

  1575. help the

  1576. needy,

  1577. the orphan,

  1578. the widow.

  1579. That's how you

  1580. live, and then

  1581. you come to my

  1582. temple and do

  1583. all these

  1584. religious

  1585. things.

  1586. You observe

  1587. the Sabbaths

  1588. and you

  1589. offer

  1590. sacrifices.

  1591. That kind

  1592. of obedience,

  1593. if you can

  1594. even call it

  1595. that, doesn't

  1596. do anything

  1597. for me.

  1598. Your

  1599. religiosity is

  1600. just a show.

  1601. Stop pretending

  1602. to have a

  1603. relationship with

  1604. me when you

  1605. don't.

  1606. These are

  1607. sobering

  1608. words.

  1609. God doesn't

  1610. want us to

  1611. pray and

  1612. read our

  1613. Bibles and

  1614. go to church

  1615. every week

  1616. and give

  1617. 10% of

  1618. our income

  1619. to the

  1620. church as

  1621. a sort of

  1622. token of

  1623. our religious

  1624. affiliation

  1625. with him.

  1626. Meanwhile,

  1627. our hearts

  1628. are far

  1629. from him.

  1630. This is

  1631. what the

  1632. Pharisees

  1633. were doing.

  1634. And Jesus

  1635. saw right

  1636. through it.

  1637. He knew

  1638. what they

  1639. were thinking.

  1640. and he

  1641. knows what

  1642. we're

  1643. thinking.

  1644. He knows

  1645. what's really

  1646. in our

  1647. hearts.

  1648. If we

  1649. think we

  1650. can keep

  1651. God happy

  1652. by just

  1653. doing enough

  1654. of his

  1655. stuff,

  1656. going to

  1657. church,

  1658. reading our

  1659. Bibles,

  1660. praying,

  1661. keeping the

  1662. Sabbath,

  1663. giving 10%,

  1664. we're wrong.

  1665. We can't

  1666. fool God.

  1667. No.

  1668. God wants

  1669. a real,

  1670. vibrant,

  1671. personal

  1672. relationship

  1673. with you.

  1674. He wants

  1675. our hearts.

  1676. He is

  1677. full of

  1678. compassion

  1679. and love

  1680. for us.

  1681. He is

  1682. the Jesus

  1683. who stood

  1684. up to the

  1685. Pharisees

  1686. and healed

  1687. the man

  1688. with the

  1689. withered

  1690. hand.

  1691. God.

  1692. And that's

  1693. why he

  1694. has come

  1695. to do

  1696. good to

  1697. us and

  1698. to save

  1699. us.

  1700. He calls

  1701. us to

  1702. repent and

  1703. believe in

  1704. him.

  1705. He calls

  1706. us to

  1707. surrender

  1708. our lives

  1709. to him

  1710. and own

  1711. him as

  1712. Lord.

  1713. And he

  1714. will not

  1715. tolerate

  1716. religious

  1717. pretenders

  1718. for very

  1719. long.

  1720. God

  1721. will not

  1722. The way

  1723. the Pharisees

  1724. and the

  1725. teachers

  1726. of the

  1727. law

  1728. abused

  1729. the

  1730. people

  1731. under

  1732. the guise

  1733. of

  1734. religious

  1735. observance

  1736. made

  1737. Jesus

  1738. very,

  1739. very angry

  1740. and upset.

  1741. just like

  1742. it did

  1743. long ago

  1744. in Israel's

  1745. history

  1746. when God

  1747. said,

  1748. your new

  1749. moon

  1750. feast

  1751. and your

  1752. appointed

  1753. festivals,

  1754. your

  1755. Sabbaths

  1756. and your

  1757. convocations

  1758. I hate

  1759. with all

  1760. my being.

  1761. But what

  1762. did God

  1763. say right

  1764. after that

  1765. long ago

  1766. through Isaiah?

  1767. He denounced

  1768. their worthless

  1769. religiosity,

  1770. he told them

  1771. he hated it

  1772. and then he

  1773. said this,

  1774. come now,

  1775. let's settle

  1776. the matter.

  1777. Though your

  1778. sins are

  1779. like scarlet,

  1780. they shall

  1781. be white

  1782. as snow.

  1783. Though they

  1784. are as

  1785. red as

  1786. crimson,

  1787. they shall

  1788. be like

  1789. wool.

  1790. God is

  1791. eager to

  1792. wash us

  1793. clean of

  1794. our moral

  1795. filth,

  1796. our pride,

  1797. our selfishness,

  1798. our self-righteousness.

  1799. He is eager

  1800. to forgive.

  1801. That's

  1802. why he

  1803. sent

  1804. Jesus.

  1805. He came

  1806. to be

  1807. the sacrifice

  1808. needed to

  1809. secure the

  1810. forgiveness of

  1811. our sins,

  1812. to save our

  1813. lives,

  1814. because we

  1815. were utterly

  1816. shriveled

  1817. and withered

  1818. by sin.

  1819. He came to

  1820. restore us

  1821. and give us

  1822. life.

  1823. So I want to

  1824. end with this

  1825. question.

  1826. have you

  1827. surrendered

  1828. your whole

  1829. heart and

  1830. life to

  1831. Jesus,

  1832. this

  1833. compassionate

  1834. Savior?

  1835. Or

  1836. do you

  1837. intend to

  1838. go on

  1839. pretending

  1840. like the

  1841. Pharisees

  1842. while pushing

  1843. Jesus away?

  1844. Father in

  1845. heaven,

  1846. please do

  1847. your good

  1848. work in

  1849. our hearts

  1850. through

  1851. your word.

  1852. I pray

  1853. that we

  1854. would not

  1855. go untouched

  1856. by these

  1857. words,

  1858. that we

  1859. would be

  1860. stirred to

  1861. faith and

  1862. to love

  1863. for you,

  1864. true love,

  1865. true faith.

  1866. we thank

  1867. you that

  1868. you are

  1869. compassionate

  1870. and merciful,

  1871. an amazing,

  1872. beautiful,

  1873. glorious God,

  1874. and we

  1875. love you.

  1876. I pray

  1877. this in

  1878. Jesus'

  1879. name.

  1880. Amen.
