  1. Well, over the summer months, we were working our way through one of Jesus' sermons in Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  2. And I want to just encourage you to imagine for a second that you had been there in that massive crowd.

  3. And that you had heard Jesus speak and say these things.

  4. Love your enemies.

  5. And do not judge.

  6. And those who hear my words and put them into practice are like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

  7. And those who don't are like a fool who built it on the sand without any foundation.

  8. And it will collapse when the flood comes.

  9. Imagine hearing those words and then heading into the nearest town for the night with these words on your mind.

  10. And nobody's ever spoken to you like this.

  11. Nobody's ever said these kinds of things before.

  12. And maybe the question rolling around in your mind is, how can I be sure?

  13. Why should we believe you?

  14. I mean, this man Jesus claims that based on how we respond to his words, we live or die.

  15. How can I be sure?

  16. Why should we believe you?

  17. Well, I believe that this next part of the story is Luke giving us his answer to this question.

  18. We're in Luke chapter 7.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  19. Let me just read the first three verses for us here.

  20. When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum.

  21. There, a centurion's servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.

  22. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant.

  23. Luke starts by setting the scene.

  24. Capernaum was a little fishing village on the shores of Galilee.

  25. And this place has, in some sense, been like a home base for Jesus.

  26. In Matthew's gospel, it actually says in one spot that Jesus went and lived in Capernaum around this time.

  27. This is where Simon Peter lived.

  28. This is where Jesus went into the synagogue and cast the evil spirit out of the man who was in there back in chapter 4.

  29. This is where later that same evening, a whole crowd of people with all kinds of sicknesses and illnesses came to Jesus.

  30. And Jesus healed them all.

  31. Well, here in Capernaum, the same town, Luke tells us there was a centurion.

  32. Now, the kind of centurion that most of us are probably familiar with is the Roman centurion.

  33. You can just kind of almost see the shield and the head thing, the helmet in your mind.

  34. But this particular centurion was probably not a Roman centurion.

  35. A centurion was actually a military rank, roughly equivalent to captain.

  36. And it referred to a commander of about a hundred men.

  37. And this whole region of Galilee, where Capernaum is, was under the rule of King Herod at this time.

  38. He was a client king of the Roman Empire.

  39. And under that sort of setup, he had his own Roman-style army and officers, which he inherited from his father.

  40. And according to the practice of his father, Herod the Great, Herod's armed forces and soldiers were predominantly Gentiles and foreigners.

  41. He was very distrusting of the Jews.

  42. And so he hired his brute force and his enforcers.

  43. Many were mercenaries.

  44. Well, this centurion, Luke tells us, had a servant.

  45. And Luke tells us about the special relationship between this servant and this centurion.

  46. He says his master valued him highly.

  47. Which probably does not refer to monetary value at all, but to having a high regard for him.

  48. There's a close relationship with him, a dear relationship to him.

  49. I was trying to think of some kind of modern day example of this, but the only thing I could think of, and I don't even watch this that much,

  50. but Alfred the Butler of Bruce Wayne in the Batman stories.

  51. You know, a guy who's clearly subordinate in a servant role and yet dependable and trustworthy and indispensable.

  52. A good man who's loved by his master.

  53. But here's the problem.

  54. This servant of the centurion was sick and about to die.

  55. It doesn't tell us what the illness was, but it was obviously severe enough that he was about to die.

  56. And seeing this, the centurion takes action.

  57. We read about it in verse 3.

  58. We notice that the centurion's action is deliberate and intentional, yet indirect.

  59. First, it's deliberate and intentional.

  60. It's the centurion himself who hears about Jesus.

  61. Remember, Jesus has been operating in the region quite a bit, doing miracles, healing all kinds of sicknesses and diseases.

  62. He's been teaching on the shores.

  63. The centurion has heard of Jesus, and he intentionally seeks out Jesus for help.

  64. He sends these elders of the Jews.

  65. It's deliberate.

  66. It's intentional.

  67. And yet the way that he goes about this is indirect.

  68. Rather than going himself to find Jesus there in the town, Luke says he sent some elders of the Jews to Jesus, asking him to come and heal his servant.

  69. And at this point we might wonder, why does he do it that way?

  70. Why not just go?

  71. Why not just go find him?

  72. Is he worried about the Gentile versus Jew dynamic?

  73. He being a Gentile and Jesus being a Jew?

  74. Maybe if I send some prominent men of his own people, he'll be more likely to consider?

  75. Or is he worried about the soldier versus holy rabbi dynamic?

  76. You know, I'm a soldier, a man of violence.

  77. I've done things that are questionable while Jesus is a holy man.

  78. What was going on in that centurion's mind?

  79. That he sent these elders of the Jews rather than going himself to Jesus?

  80. Well, the good news is we find out in a minute.

  81. With the setting out of the way, Luke tells us now about the first encounter with Jesus.

  82. These elders come with a message from the centurion.

  83. And they're there to fetch Jesus.

  84. We read about it in verse 4.

  85. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him.

  86. This man deserves to have you do this.

  87. Because he loves our nation.

  88. And he has built our synagogue.

  89. We actually learn quite a lot from these few words of the elders.

  90. Think about the normal relationship between Jews and Gentiles.

  91. Normally, Jews look down upon Gentiles and saw them as unclean.

  92. Even more so, a Gentile soldier.

  93. And even more so, one who is in the service of Herod.

  94. The Jews were not particularly fond of Herod.

  95. And yet surprisingly, these elders of the Jews there in Capernaum seem to regard this particular centurion, this Gentile, very highly.

  96. This man deserves to have you come and heal his servant, they say.

  97. Why?

  98. Because he loves our nation.

  99. Even more than that, he built our synagogue.

  100. So this is not your typical hardened Gentile mercenary captain.

  101. It appears from the elders that this centurion is quite the man.

  102. He's been a great friend to the Jewish people where he lives.

  103. Not only that, but he's even built the local synagogue.

  104. Can you imagine them?

  105. Working together, side by side.

  106. They say he loves the nation.

  107. He might not have been a full convert to Judaism.

  108. But it seems from this at least, that he was a kind and God-fearing man.

  109. And everybody in town knew it.

  110. But this man deserves to have you come and heal his servant, they say.

  111. If anyone is worthy of a miracle here, it's him.

  112. And so, verse 6, Jesus went with them.

  113. But then, before Jesus arrives at the centurion's house, he receives a second message from the centurion.

  114. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him,

  115. Lord, don't trouble yourself.

  116. For I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.

  117. That's why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you.

  118. Okay, this is unexpected.

  119. If you've never heard this story before or read this before,

  120. you know, we kind of just assumed at this point that Jesus is going to go right to the house,

  121. lay hands on the man, say, be healed, and he's going to be healed, and off we go.

  122. So, the first message was, come and heal my servant.

  123. And now Jesus is almost at the house, and the centurion sends his friends out to tell him,

  124. don't trouble yourself.

  125. Don't come into the house.

  126. Don't come into the house.

  127. Don't come into the house.

  128. Don't come into the house.

  129. And the reason is astonishing.

  130. For I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.

  131. That's why I didn't even consider myself worthy to come to you.

  132. Wow.

  133. Now we know why the centurion was so indirect before.

  134. Why he sent the elders of the Jews.

  135. It wasn't because of some Jew versus Gentile dynamic,

  136. or because he thought the elders of the Jews would be more likely to convince Jesus to come and do this.

  137. This was the reason.

  138. I didn't come to you myself,

  139. because I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you.

  140. Do you see the irony in all this?

  141. What were the elders of the Jews saying about the centurion?

  142. This man deserves to have you do this.

  143. He's worthy.

  144. And what's the centurion saying about himself?

  145. I don't even deserve to be in your presence, Jesus.

  146. I am unworthy.

  147. Amazing.

  148. This centurion, this commander of a hundred men,

  149. a man of influence and power and strength,

  150. and yet he has such humility,

  151. reverence and humility before Jesus.

  152. First it was come and heal.

  153. Now it's don't come into the house.

  154. But say the word,

  155. and my servant will be healed.

  156. For I myself am a man under authority,

  157. with soldiers under me.

  158. I tell this one,

  159. go.

  160. And he goes.

  161. And this one,

  162. come.

  163. And he comes.

  164. I say to my servant,

  165. do this.

  166. And he does it.

  167. Amazing.

  168. Don't come all the way to my house.

  169. I'm not worthy to be in your presence, Jesus.

  170. Just say the word.

  171. And my servant will be healed.

  172. This is astonishing.

  173. What does he believe about Jesus?

  174. Well, he obviously has complete confidence that Jesus can heal his servant,

  175. even though he's on the brink of death.

  176. But it's even more than that.

  177. He doesn't think of Jesus' power to heal

  178. as being anything like a doctor's.

  179. With a doctor,

  180. you first need him to come,

  181. examine the servant,

  182. assess his condition,

  183. diagnose his illness,

  184. figure out what's wrong,

  185. and then the doctor will tell you

  186. whether there's anything that he can do.

  187. And I suspect many would have thought the same about Jesus.

  188. You know,

  189. I've heard he can heal all sorts of things,

  190. but what about my condition?

  191. Or what about the condition of my loved one?

  192. Probably some things are beyond even Jesus' power to heal,

  193. some probably thought.

  194. But not this centurion.

  195. He didn't think of Jesus' power to heal

  196. as being anything like that.

  197. In his mind,

  198. whether Jesus could heal a person or not

  199. had nothing to do

  200. with the seriousness of the condition.

  201. Rather,

  202. it was in his mind

  203. a matter of authority.

  204. Whether he can truly heal anyone

  205. has to do

  206. with who he is

  207. and what kind of authority he has

  208. over sickness,

  209. over the body,

  210. over life.

  211. And amazingly,

  212. the centurion,

  213. just from hearing about the things

  214. Jesus has been doing

  215. in his region,

  216. came to believe

  217. something amazing

  218. about who Jesus really was.

  219. He believed it so much

  220. that when he came to be in need

  221. of this miracle

  222. for his servant,

  223. he looked to Jesus,

  224. he asked him to come,

  225. but then said,

  226. don't come all the way,

  227. just say the word.

  228. Lord,

  229. and my servant will be healed.

  230. I don't know about you,

  231. but my eyes would have been wide

  232. in this moment

  233. had I been there listening to this.

  234. Like,

  235. hold on a second.

  236. Does he really believe

  237. that right here and now

  238. Jesus can just say the word

  239. and the guy lying in bed

  240. over there in the house

  241. will be healed?

  242. Doesn't Jesus want to come

  243. and see how bad it is?

  244. Nope.

  245. Not necessary,

  246. says the centurion.

  247. And the explanation

  248. of the centurion

  249. is wonderful.

  250. His understanding

  251. of all this

  252. is filtered through

  253. his own experience

  254. as a captain,

  255. as a commander.

  256. He's understanding

  257. Jesus' relationship

  258. to the sickness

  259. through his own experience,

  260. his relationship

  261. to his men

  262. and to his servants.

  263. And it comes down

  264. to this for him.

  265. He says,

  266. it's a simple matter

  267. of authority.

  268. Because I have

  269. authority over my men,

  270. I tell them what to do

  271. and they do it.

  272. That's the way it is

  273. with you,

  274. Jesus,

  275. and the sickness

  276. in people's lives,

  277. in their bodies.

  278. You have authority

  279. over the sickness itself.

  280. You tell it what to do

  281. and it does it.

  282. And therefore,

  283. it really doesn't matter

  284. whether you're in the house

  285. or out there

  286. or where you are,

  287. Jesus.

  288. Just say the word

  289. and my servant

  290. will be healed.

  291. Look at the response

  292. of Jesus to this

  293. second message.

  294. Verse 9,

  295. when Jesus heard this,

  296. he was amazed at him

  297. or he marveled at him

  298. and turning to the crowd

  299. following him,

  300. he said,

  301. I tell you,

  302. I have not found

  303. such great faith

  304. even in Israel.

  305. I love this.

  306. Jesus is just so deeply impressed,

  307. so moved

  308. by the centurion's faith.

  309. He turns and announces it

  310. to the whole crowd

  311. just how wonderful this is.

  312. All of them knew

  313. where Jesus was going

  314. by now.

  315. They probably heard

  316. the elders pleading earnestly,

  317. come heal this man's servant.

  318. Probably lots of them

  319. were thinking,

  320. oh,

  321. this is going to be great.

  322. Jesus is going to heal

  323. our dear centurion's

  324. servant.

  325. And the next thing we know,

  326. the parade's over.

  327. No,

  328. we're not going

  329. into the house anymore.

  330. Nope,

  331. the centurion said,

  332. don't trouble yourself.

  333. He said,

  334. just say the word

  335. and my servant

  336. will be healed.

  337. I tell you,

  338. I have not found

  339. such great faith

  340. even in Israel.

  341. Some of the Jews

  342. have had faith

  343. in Jesus,

  344. but not like this man's.

  345. This man understands

  346. and believes things

  347. about me

  348. and about my father

  349. that no one else does

  350. even in Israel.

  351. At least not yet.

  352. I got thinking about this.

  353. You know,

  354. it's quite the thing

  355. for Jesus to say.

  356. I haven't seen faith

  357. like this

  358. even in Israel,

  359. even among the Jews.

  360. Think about this.

  361. Who has Luke

  362. introduced us to

  363. so far in the story?

  364. The priest,

  365. Zachariah,

  366. who served

  367. in the temple

  368. of the Lord.

  369. And what was his response

  370. when an angel

  371. appeared to him

  372. and said,

  373. you're going to have a son?

  374. He didn't believe it.

  375. This Gentile captain

  376. in Herod's army

  377. had greater faith

  378. than Zachariah the priest.

  379. What about Mary?

  380. The mother of Jesus.

  381. Surely she's an example

  382. of someone in Israel

  383. who had great faith.

  384. After all,

  385. she didn't doubt

  386. what the angel said to her.

  387. She just asked about

  388. how it would come to pass.

  389. But then this centurion

  390. didn't even think it necessary

  391. to see or discuss the how.

  392. you have the authority

  393. of God to heal.

  394. And so say the word.

  395. Wherever you are,

  396. it will be done.

  397. What about John the Baptist?

  398. We've heard a lot about him.

  399. He was a prophet of God.

  400. Surely he has greater faith

  401. than this Gentile centurion.

  402. Well, in a few weeks' time,

  403. just glance down the page

  404. to verse 20.

  405. We're going to see

  406. that even John the Baptist

  407. wrestled with doubt

  408. when he saw

  409. how things were going

  410. with Jesus.

  411. I don't think Jesus

  412. is exaggerating here

  413. when he says,

  414. I tell you,

  415. I have not found

  416. such great faith

  417. even in Israel.

  418. this humble Gentile centurion

  419. has a better understanding

  420. of who I am

  421. than anyone

  422. I have come across so far

  423. here in Israel,

  424. than any of my own people,

  425. the Jews,

  426. than all of the elders,

  427. than the Pharisees,

  428. than the priests,

  429. even the chief priests.

  430. How did it come to be

  431. that this centurion

  432. has greater faith in Jesus

  433. than everyone else

  434. in Israel?

  435. Well, there's a behind-the-scenes

  436. spiritual answer

  437. to this question,

  438. and I don't want to

  439. go on without

  440. acknowledging that.

  441. As Jesus said

  442. on one occasion,

  443. John 6, verse 44,

    John 6:44

  444. no one can come to me

  445. unless the Father

  446. who sent me

  447. draws him

  448. or draws them.

  449. So there is

  450. that sort of

  451. work of God,

  452. that unseen

  453. drawing of God,

  454. the opening of eyes,

  455. the giving of faith.

  456. That's the behind-the-scenes

  457. spiritual answer

  458. to how this centurion

  459. came to have

  460. the faith

  461. that is so great

  462. in Jesus,

  463. greater than anyone

  464. in Israel.

  465. But in terms of

  466. the visible

  467. and the tangible things,

  468. how did it come to be

  469. that this centurion

  470. has greater faith

  471. than anyone

  472. in Israel?

  473. Think about this.

  474. He had not had

  475. more private

  476. one-on-one time

  477. with Jesus

  478. than anyone.

  479. More conversations.

  480. He hadn't even met

  481. Jesus face-to-face.

  482. We might have thought

  483. that the twelve disciples

  484. should have

  485. the greatest faith

  486. simply because

  487. of the amount of time

  488. that they spent

  489. with him

  490. and the sheer volume

  491. of miracles

  492. they witnessed

  493. and the teachings

  494. that they heard

  495. from him.

  496. But no,

  497. that's not it.

  498. This centurion

  499. had greater faith

  500. than Peter,

  501. than James,

  502. than John.

  503. How could that be?

  504. What had the centurion

  505. heard and seen

  506. about Jesus?

  507. even though it was

  508. much less than many,

  509. yet he knew

  510. and believed

  511. much more about Jesus

  512. than anyone

  513. in Israel.

  514. How could it be?

  515. I gave the spiritual

  516. God drawing him

  517. and revealing it to him

  518. part of the answer,

  519. but I want to

  520. think of this

  521. from the very human

  522. perspective

  523. of the centurion

  524. himself.

  525. What had he heard

  526. about Jesus?

  527. Up until this point

  528. in the story,

  529. not too much.

  530. He had maybe heard

  531. some of the teaching

  532. of John the baptizer

  533. that someone special

  534. was about to come,

  535. the Lamb of God

  536. who takes away

  537. the sins of the world.

  538. He had maybe heard

  539. Jesus' simple declaration

  540. which we read about

  541. in the Gospel of Mark.

  542. The kingdom of God

  543. has come near.

  544. Repent

  545. and believe the good news.

  546. He had maybe heard

  547. by now of how

  548. Jesus was claiming

  549. the fulfillment

  550. of the great prophecies

  551. of old

  552. from the Jewish scriptures

  553. just like he did

  554. in Nazareth

  555. there in the synagogue

  556. and probably elsewhere.

  557. He'd maybe heard

  558. some of these

  559. early teachings of Jesus

  560. which we just looked at

  561. in this sermon of Jesus

  562. in Luke chapter 6.

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  563. But other than that,

  564. he had likely heard

  565. of how Jesus

  566. had been healing people

  567. and casting demons

  568. out of people.

  569. All kinds of people.

  570. But it would seem

  571. that this centurion

  572. paid more attention

  573. and deeper attention

  574. to these things

  575. than others did.

  576. Think back over

  577. some of these things

  578. Jesus did

  579. when he healed people,

  580. when he drove out demons.

  581. How did Jesus heal

  582. and drive out demons

  583. in chapters 4 and 5?

  584. He ordered

  585. the evil spirit

  586. to come out

  587. of the man

  588. in the synagogue

  589. and it came out.

  590. Likewise,

  591. Jesus rebuked

  592. the fever

  593. of Simon's mother-in-law

  594. and it left her.

  595. He said to the man

  596. with leprosy

  597. in chapter 5,

  598. Be clean!

  599. And immediately

  600. the leprosy

  601. left him.

  602. He said to the

  603. paralyzed man

  604. on the mat

  605. who was lowered

  606. through the roof,

  607. Your sins are forgiven

  608. and I want you

  609. to know

  610. that the Son of Man

  611. has authority

  612. on earth

  613. to forgive sins.

  614. So I'll heal

  615. this man,

  616. I tell you.

  617. Get up,

  618. take your mat

  619. and go home.

  620. And he stood up.

  621. He was healed

  622. and he did

  623. as Jesus said.

  624. All along

  625. what the centurion

  626. has come to believe

  627. about Jesus

  628. has been there.

  629. visible

  630. in how

  631. Jesus has been doing

  632. all these miracles.

  633. You can imagine

  634. the centurion

  635. just standing back

  636. and thinking

  637. over all these things.

  638. Just like I tell

  639. my men to go

  640. and they go

  641. or to come

  642. and they come.

  643. This man,

  644. Jesus,

  645. tells sicknesses

  646. to go

  647. and they go.

  648. He tells demons

  649. to come out

  650. and they come out.

  651. all of these things

  652. that Jesus did

  653. were great signs

  654. and what I'm getting

  655. at is this.

  656. The centurion

  657. simply followed

  658. the signs

  659. to their destinations.

  660. Many, it seems,

  661. saw the miracles

  662. of Jesus

  663. and went,

  664. oh,

  665. wow,

  666. that's amazing.

  667. Could he be

  668. the Messiah?

  669. I don't know.

  670. But let's see

  671. some more.

  672. It's like they were

  673. caught up in this

  674. sensational show.

  675. But many were not

  676. stopping to really

  677. think about what

  678. Jesus' ability

  679. to do all

  680. these miracles

  681. in this way

  682. was really saying

  683. about who he was.

  684. but the centurion

  685. wasn't missing it.

  686. Some of the

  687. twelve disciples,

  688. I mean,

  689. they came to

  690. these conclusions

  691. quite early on

  692. that Jesus

  693. was the Messiah

  694. and yet

  695. we see throughout

  696. the story

  697. their notions

  698. about

  699. the Messiah

  700. and how the story

  701. would go

  702. kept getting overturned

  703. and yet

  704. here's this

  705. Gentile centurion,

  706. an outsider

  707. to the prophets

  708. and the scriptures

  709. and the faith

  710. of the Jews

  711. and he's been

  712. watching Jesus

  713. and thinking about

  714. what Jesus is doing

  715. and how he does it

  716. and he's come to

  717. the conclusion

  718. that Jesus has

  719. the very authority

  720. and power of God

  721. to heal,

  722. to save,

  723. to restore life.

  724. and it's not

  725. some sort of

  726. you know

  727. pagan magic

  728. or ritual

  729. where you just

  730. got to say

  731. the right stuff

  732. or use the right

  733. ingredients,

  734. the right herbs

  735. like a witch doctor.

  736. No,

  737. this Jesus

  738. has the very

  739. authority

  740. and power

  741. of God.

  742. Look at what

  743. he's doing.

  744. Just like

  745. the creator

  746. God,

  747. he declares

  748. and people

  749. are healed.

  750. They're restored

  751. completely.

  752. If he says

  753. the word

  754. because of

  755. who he is,

  756. therefore

  757. my servant

  758. can be healed

  759. too.

  760. That's a

  761. greater conception

  762. of the Messiah

  763. than probably

  764. anybody in Israel

  765. had

  766. at this time.

  767. They were looking

  768. for that

  769. great human king

  770. sent by God

  771. and backed

  772. by God,

  773. yes,

  774. but still very much

  775. an ordinary man

  776. come to rule

  777. over a typical

  778. earthly kingdom

  779. but greater,

  780. to free us

  781. from the Roman rule

  782. and the rule

  783. of Herod

  784. and take us

  785. back to the glory

  786. days of Israel.

  787. But this centurion

  788. was already

  789. seeing something

  790. far greater

  791. in Jesus.

  792. Not just a

  793. great king

  794. from a worldly

  795. point of view.

  796. No,

  797. this man,

  798. he actually

  799. has

  800. and wields

  801. the very

  802. authority

  803. of God.

  804. And if he

  805. has that,

  806. he can do

  807. as God

  808. can do

  809. for my servant.

  810. Just say the word.

  811. Behind the miracles

  812. of Jesus,

  813. there is

  814. a meaning.

  815. There is a

  816. significance

  817. to them.

  818. We all too

  819. easily get caught

  820. up in the

  821. sensationalism

  822. of the miracles.

  823. and then once

  824. we get really

  825. familiar with

  826. them,

  827. we lose that.

  828. We get bored

  829. of them

  830. because we

  831. want the ooh,

  832. we want the ah

  833. feeling that we

  834. had when we

  835. first heard about

  836. them.

  837. But in doing

  838. this,

  839. we miss the

  840. significance

  841. of them.

  842. The miracles

  843. are signs,

  844. like a sign

  845. on the highway

  846. that points

  847. to a destination.

  848. It points

  849. to a reality

  850. about Jesus,

  851. something true

  852. about him.

  853. And these

  854. realities are

  855. so great

  856. and glorious

  857. that we

  858. can never

  859. get over

  860. them.

  861. They never

  862. get old.

  863. And this

  864. centurion had

  865. laid hold of

  866. one of these

  867. realities by

  868. faith,

  869. the reality

  870. that Jesus

  871. really does

  872. have the

  873. authority

  874. of God.

  875. How does

  876. it end?

  877. Verse 10,

  878. Then the men

  879. who had been

  880. sent returned

  881. to the house

  882. and found

  883. the servant

  884. well.

  885. so Jesus

  886. does heal

  887. him from

  888. a distance

  889. by the

  890. authority he

  891. has.

  892. He doesn't

  893. go to the

  894. house.

  895. The elders

  896. do.

  897. Think about

  898. this whole

  899. day from

  900. the perspective

  901. of the elders.

  902. Starting off,

  903. meeting with

  904. the centurion,

  905. seeing the

  906. servant about

  907. to die,

  908. going to

  909. Jesus,

  910. please come.

  911. And they

  912. finally get

  913. back to the

  914. house without

  915. Jesus and the

  916. servant is

  917. well.

  918. that word

  919. means

  920. completely

  921. fine.

  922. No

  923. sickness,

  924. no illness,

  925. nothing wrong

  926. with him.

  927. Do you

  928. know who

  929. Jesus really

  930. is?

  931. That he is

  932. the very

  933. son of

  934. God,

  935. the one

  936. who has

  937. the authority

  938. of God.

  939. after Jesus

  940. rose from

  941. the dead,

  942. he said

  943. this to

  944. his

  945. followers.

  946. Matthew

    Matthew 28:18

  947. 28,

  948. verse 18,

  949. then Jesus

  950. came to

  951. them and

  952. said,

  953. all authority

  954. in heaven

  955. and on

  956. earth has

  957. been given

  958. to me.

  959. Many of

  960. us who are

  961. Christians for

  962. a long time

  963. know these

  964. words,

  965. but we

  966. are eager

  967. to get to

  968. the part

  969. that we

  970. do.

  971. Let's

  972. pause and

  973. just reflect

  974. on these

  975. words.

  976. All

  977. authority in

  978. heaven and

  979. on earth

  980. has been

  981. given to

  982. me,

  983. said Jesus.

  984. Not just

  985. the authority

  986. to heal,

  987. to restore

  988. life,

  989. to cast

  990. out demons,

  991. to calm

  992. storms,

  993. but all

  994. authority in

  995. heaven and

  996. on earth.

  997. He is

  998. Lord of

  999. all.

  1000. He is

  1001. one with

  1002. God.

  1003. He is

  1004. God

  1005. overall,

  1006. king

  1007. overall.

  1008. And not

  1009. just the

  1010. stuff down

  1011. here on

  1012. earth,

  1013. but also

  1014. the stuff

  1015. way up

  1016. there that

  1017. we see

  1018. through the

  1019. telescope.

  1020. He's

  1021. over that

  1022. too.

  1023. That stuff

  1024. listens to

  1025. him too.

  1026. and one

  1027. day he

  1028. will bring

  1029. this world

  1030. into its

  1031. proper place

  1032. before him

  1033. and he

  1034. will rule

  1035. down here

  1036. visibly and

  1037. tangibly as

  1038. the king of

  1039. all kings,

  1040. displaying the

  1041. full measure

  1042. of his

  1043. power and

  1044. of his

  1045. authority.

  1046. Do you

  1047. know who

  1048. Jesus really

  1049. is?

  1050. have you

  1051. followed the

  1052. signs to

  1053. the realities,

  1054. to the

  1055. destinations?

  1056. Great faith

  1057. in God is

  1058. not reserved

  1059. only for the

  1060. Jews,

  1061. nor is it

  1062. only for the

  1063. prominent,

  1064. the elders,

  1065. the priests,

  1066. the pastors,

  1067. the preachers.

  1068. you can

  1069. have great

  1070. faith in

  1071. God too.

  1072. Look to

  1073. Jesus.

  1074. Follow the

  1075. signs that

  1076. he has

  1077. given.

  1078. There's so

  1079. many ways

  1080. that we can

  1081. be encouraged

  1082. by this.

  1083. None of

  1084. us has a

  1085. sick servant

  1086. at home,

  1087. but what's

  1088. the trouble

  1089. or struggle

  1090. or problem

  1091. in your

  1092. life right

  1093. now?

  1094. About which

  1095. you could

  1096. come,

  1097. call out to

  1098. Jesus and

  1099. ask him

  1100. to come

  1101. and help.

  1102. Are you

  1103. seeking his

  1104. help?

  1105. Do you

  1106. believe that

  1107. he can do

  1108. something about

  1109. this?

  1110. Have you

  1111. asked him?

  1112. Or maybe

  1113. it's worry,

  1114. anxiety,

  1115. panic about

  1116. all sorts of

  1117. things,

  1118. and yet

  1119. do we need

  1120. to worry

  1121. or fret

  1122. about things

  1123. when the

  1124. one who

  1125. has all

  1126. authority

  1127. in heaven

  1128. and on

  1129. earth is

  1130. willing to

  1131. come and

  1132. visit us

  1133. and intervene

  1134. with grace

  1135. in our

  1136. lives.

  1137. There's so

  1138. many ways

  1139. that we

  1140. can be

  1141. encouraged

  1142. by this,

  1143. and I

  1144. hope you'll

  1145. think about

  1146. these things

  1147. this week.

  1148. But this

  1149. Sunday as we

  1150. come to the

  1151. table,

  1152. we're just

  1153. going to

  1154. focus very

  1155. quickly on

  1156. one particular

  1157. authority of

  1158. Jesus,

  1159. which is

  1160. especially

  1161. precious.

  1162. And it's

  1163. that authority

  1164. to forgive

  1165. us of

  1166. our sins.

  1167. I had a

  1168. good conversation

  1169. with a

  1170. brother just

  1171. recently in

  1172. which we

  1173. shared about

  1174. some of the

  1175. sins that we

  1176. had in our

  1177. past.

  1178. They are

  1179. many.

  1180. we need

  1181. a remedy.

  1182. We need

  1183. someone who

  1184. can cleanse

  1185. us of those

  1186. things and

  1187. forgive us of

  1188. those things.

  1189. Praise God,

  1190. he has sent

  1191. his son Jesus

  1192. into our

  1193. world with

  1194. authority to

  1195. forgive our

  1196. sins.

  1197. The table

  1198. that we're

  1199. about to

  1200. partake of

  1201. reminds us

  1202. of how

  1203. this works.

  1204. He had

  1205. the authority

  1206. to forgive

  1207. us,

  1208. but it was

  1209. contingent upon

  1210. his willingness

  1211. to take

  1212. what we

  1213. deserve,

  1214. our punishment

  1215. on himself.

  1216. This is what

  1217. happened at the

  1218. cross when

  1219. Jesus died.

  1220. He allowed

  1221. his body to

  1222. be broken

  1223. and his

  1224. blood to be

  1225. shed.

  1226. That's

  1227. pictured in

  1228. the bread

  1229. that we're

  1230. about to

  1231. eat,

  1232. which is

  1233. broken and

  1234. given out,

  1235. and the

  1236. cup that

  1237. we're about

  1238. to drink.

  1239. His body

  1240. was broken

  1241. and his

  1242. blood was

  1243. shed to

  1244. atone for

  1245. our sins.

  1246. the cross

  1247. and what

  1248. Jesus did

  1249. there for

  1250. us undergirds

  1251. his authority

  1252. to forgive

  1253. us of our

  1254. sins.

  1255. Sometimes we

  1256. get so used

  1257. to hearing

  1258. about this,

  1259. it becomes so

  1260. familiar,

  1261. but we

  1262. forget this

  1263. was absolutely

  1264. necessary so

  1265. that we

  1266. could be

  1267. forgiven.

  1268. we needed

  1269. a new

  1270. arrangement,

  1271. a new

  1272. deal with

  1273. God,

  1274. a new

  1275. relationship.

  1276. He had

  1277. to suffer.

  1278. He had

  1279. to die

  1280. as he did

  1281. to get

  1282. us off

  1283. the hook

  1284. with God,

  1285. to take

  1286. away that

  1287. punishment

  1288. that we

  1289. deserve.

  1290. And so

  1291. that's what

  1292. we want

  1293. to remember,

  1294. that's what

  1295. we want

  1296. to celebrate

  1297. again this

  1298. morning as

  1299. we eat

  1300. and drink

  1301. of the

  1302. bread and

  1303. the cup

  1304. that Jesus

  1305. came and

  1306. he did

  1307. that for

  1308. us.

  1309. We're

  1310. going to

  1311. take a

  1312. few minutes

  1313. now of

  1314. quiet to

  1315. reflect,

  1316. to pray,

  1317. talk to

  1318. God in

  1319. these

  1320. moments,

  1321. and then

  1322. we'll have

  1323. some of

  1324. the men

  1325. come up

  1326. and pass

  1327. out the

  1328. elements.

  1329. If you

  1330. have faith

  1331. that Jesus

  1332. really is

  1333. the one

  1334. in charge

  1335. of all,

  1336. that he

  1337. has done

  1338. this to

  1339. save you,

  1340. then I

  1341. invite you

  1342. to please

  1343. join with

  1344. us and

  1345. eat and

  1346. drink with

  1347. us in

  1348. these

  1349. moments.

  1350. And if

  1351. not,

  1352. please just

  1353. let the

  1354. bread

  1355. and the

  1356. cup pass

  1357. you by.

  1358. We wait

  1359. until everybody

  1360. has been

  1361. served,

  1362. and then

  1363. we'll give

  1364. thanks together

  1365. and we'll

  1366. partake

  1367. all together.

  1368. Amen.

  1369. Amen.

  1370. Amen.

  1371. Amen.
