  1. Alright, I want you guys to imagine you're 20 years old again.

  2. And if you're not 20 yet, then just pretend you're 20 years old.

  3. !

  4. Suffered a tragic loss, and this loss really brought you two closer together.

  5. In the past few months, you've been able to share your dreams with her, your fears with her.

  6. You've helped her to understand what is meaningful to you.

  7. You know her laugh, you know her favorite song, and you know the way her eyes light up when she's excited.

  8. You've invested so much time into this relationship.

  9. It's almost as if your lives are intertwined.

  10. After a few months, you propose to this lovely lady.

  11. And then shortly after that, you get married.

  12. And you continue to get to know this lady.

  13. And each day, you understand her more and more.

  14. What she likes, what she doesn't like.

  15. But after a couple years, you notice a shift.

  16. You notice that she starts to say less.

  17. There's less laughter when she's around.

  18. And sometimes you wonder if she even notices you.

  19. Maybe she's just stressed or tired.

  20. So you give her the space that she needs.

  21. After all, you were warned that in marriage there would be rough patches.

  22. And maybe this is just one of those.

  23. But the distance continues to grow.

  24. And the conversations continue to become more brief.

  25. The smiles, they become rare.

  26. And the feelings that you once shared are slowly slipping away.

  27. You notice that her attention turns to other things.

  28. And she starts making choices without you.

  29. Those little gestures that used to show love are now absent.

  30. Every day, the life that you built together.

  31. The dreams you shared.

  32. The laughter.

  33. The late night talks.

  34. The sacrifices.

  35. They all seem to be fading away.

  36. The closeness that once brought joy to your life and to this relationship.

  37. That same closeness now brings aching.

  38. You wonder, does she even remember that you love her?

  39. And then one day, you experience tightness in your chest.

  40. The betrayal that you suspected has been confirmed.

  41. Your wife has been unfaithful.

  42. Turning away from the love and intimacy that you two have built over time.

  43. The pain is sharp because you've invested so much into this relationship.

  44. And the love and trust that you've built is now shattered.

  45. It feels like your heart has been ripped out.

  46. The love that you thought was all good now brings discomfort as well.

  47. At its highest, this love is something that you may only experience through marriage.

  48. But at its lowest, it leaves you filled with doubt and regret.

  49. You have a choice.

  50. Do you walk away from this relationship that you once held so dear?

  51. Or do you hold on to hope of restoration?

  52. This is the picture that God paints with Israel.

  53. He loved them and they continued to walk away.

  54. Chasing after idols and turning away from that relationship that they once had.

  55. God's heart was aching.

  56. But he was still longing for a return.

  57. Before we jump in to the passage,

  58. I'm just going to give you some context to help you understand how shocking this truly is.

  59. So Hosea lived in the northern kingdom of Israel.

  60. This was about 750 years before Jesus.

  61. On the surface, Israel was a very prosperous land.

  62. The economy was booming.

  63. Cities were being built.

  64. Everyone was comfortable.

  65. It was a great time in Israel.

  66. At least on the outside.

  67. But on the inside, they were straying from God.

  68. They were chasing after idols.

  69. Going through the motions.

  70. They still brought sacrifices to the temple.

  71. They still sang songs.

  72. But they started to worship Baal.

  73. Who was a Canaanite god of fertility and rain.

  74. They believed that Baal would give them good crops, strong herd, and wealth.

  75. The Israelites would say that they trusted in Yahweh.

  76. But their idol worship would say otherwise.

  77. They wanted God's blessing, not his lordship.

  78. That is where Hosea comes in.

  79. Let's turn to Hosea 1, verses 2 to 11.

    Hosea 1:2–11

  80. When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him,

  81. Go marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her.

  82. For like an adulterous wife, this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.

  83. She has married Gomer, daughter of Diblim.

  84. And she conceived and bore him a son.

  85. Then the Lord said to Hosea,

  86. Call him Jezreel,

  87. because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel.

  88. And I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.

  89. In that day, I will break Israel's bow in the valley of Jezreel.

  90. Gomer conceived again and gave birth to a daughter.

  91. Then the Lord said to Hosea,

  92. Call her Loruhema, which means not loved.

  93. For I will no longer show love to Israel,

  94. that I should at all forgive them.

  95. Yet I will show love to Judah,

  96. and I will save them,

  97. not by bow, sword, or battle,

  98. or by horses and horsemen.

  99. But I, the Lord their God, will save them.

  100. After she had weaned Loruhema,

  101. Gomer had another son.

  102. Then the Lord said,

  103. Call him Loamai,

  104. which means not my people.

  105. For you are not my people,

  106. and I am not your God.

  107. Yet the Israelites will be like the sand on the seashore,

  108. which cannot be measured or counted

  109. in the place where it was said to them,

  110. You are not my people.

  111. They will be called children of the living God.

  112. The people of Judah and the people of Israel will come together.

  113. They will appoint one leader,

  114. and will come up out of the land.

  115. For great will be the day of Jezreel.

  116. Let's pray.

  117. Lord, I thank you for this day that you've given to us,

  118. and just the opportunity that we can come and gather together,

  119. and just hear from your word.

  120. And I pray that these words that you've given to us in Hosea,

  121. that we would be open to hearing what you want us to hear from this passage,

  122. and that you would just give me the words to speak,

  123. and that I would be able to just share what you want me to share.

  124. I pray these things in your name.

  125. Amen.

  126. All right.

  127. Sin is not just breaking God's rules.

  128. It's breaking God's heart.

  129. When the Lord began to speak through Hosea,

  130. the Lord said to him,

  131. Go marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her.

  132. For like an adulterous wife,

  133. this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.

  134. In verse 2, God tells Hosea to marry a promiscuous woman.

  135. That word means having many partners.

  136. This is a living picture of Israel's spiritual adultery.

  137. Why would God want someone to marry such a sinner?

  138. Like, that doesn't make sense.

  139. Hosea is a prophet of God,

  140. and he's using this prophet to marry a sinner,

  141. a promiscuous woman.

  142. But what is more shocking

  143. is that this is a picture of God's relationship with Israel.

  144. Israel disobeyed.

  145. They betrayed a covenant of love.

  146. They wandered morally,

  147. and they wandered relationally.

  148. They traded the God who brought them out of Egypt

  149. for gods made of wood and stone.

  150. They were chasing after idols,

  151. trusting foreign alliances,

  152. seeking satisfaction in things that couldn't love them back.

  153. This brought a lot of pain to God.

  154. The pain of being replaced.

  155. The ache of loving someone who runs away

  156. and keeps running away.

  157. Hosea shows us

  158. that sin

  159. doesn't just offend God's holiness.

  160. It wounds his heart.

  161. Have you ever been in a conversation

  162. with somebody

  163. who's glued to their phone?

  164. Maybe you're pouring your heart out

  165. or sharing something important,

  166. and mid-sentence you hear that ding.

  167. Their eyes flick down.

  168. Their thumbs start moving.

  169. Right then you notice that you've lost them.

  170. What you're telling them now

  171. is just going over their head.

  172. They're focused on their phone

  173. and what's in front of them.

  174. They're there physically,

  175. but they're not very present.

  176. If you've ever been on the receiving end of this,

  177. this isn't a great feeling.

  178. You might wonder,

  179. are they even listening?

  180. Or do they even care what I have to say?

  181. This is a glimpse

  182. of how God felt with Israel.

  183. They still went to the temple.

  184. They still offered sacrifices.

  185. They still said the right things.

  186. But their hearts were somewhere else.

  187. How often do we do the same?

  188. Show up to church,

  189. sing the songs,

  190. read our Bible,

  191. but our hearts are miles away.

  192. God doesn't want half of our hearts.

  193. He wants the whole heart.

  194. God doesn't just want our attendance,

  195. but he wants our affection.

  196. He doesn't just want our obedience,

  197. but he wants our heart.

  198. We may not bow to idols of stone,

  199. but our hearts can still chase after things like success

  200. or money,

  201. pleasure,

  202. control,

  203. comfort,

  204. approval.

  205. I want you to ask yourself,

  206. where has your heart drifted?

  207. When we treat God like a background app,

  208. open but not active,

  209. we betray a relationship with him.

  210. Even in our half-heartedness,

  211. God continues to call us to come home.

  212. God's love is so real

  213. that he refuses to ignore our sin.

  214. Each of Hosea's children

  215. receive names that symbolize judgment.

  216. Then the Lord said to Hosea,

  217. call him Jezreel,

  218. because I will soon punish the house of Jehu

  219. for the massacre at Jezreel,

  220. and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.

  221. And that day I will break Israel's bow

  222. in the valley of Jezreel.

  223. Gomer conceived again

  224. and gave birth to a daughter.

  225. Then the Lord said to Hosea,

  226. call her Loruhema,

  227. which means not loved,

  228. for I will no longer show love to Israel,

  229. that I should at all forgive them.

  230. Yet I will show love to Judah,

  231. and I will save them,

  232. not by bow, sword, or battle,

  233. or by horses and horsemen,

  234. but I, the Lord their God,

  235. will save them.

  236. After she had weaned Loruhema,

  237. Gomer had another son.

  238. Then the Lord said,

  239. call him Loamai,

  240. which means not my people,

  241. for you are not my people,

  242. and I am not your God.

  243. So the first one we see is Jezreel.

  244. This is a reminder

  245. that violence and bloodshed

  246. will bring Israel's downfall.

  247. And then the second child,

  248. we see Loruhema,

  249. which means not loved,

  250. representing God's withdrawal of mercy.

  251. And the third child,

  252. Loamai,

  253. which means not my people,

  254. symbolizing a broken relationship.

  255. Imagine naming your kids

  256. names like this.

  257. Not loved,

  258. not my people.

  259. Like,

  260. in this world,

  261. I can't imagine anybody doing that.

  262. And if they did,

  263. we would wonder if they're a psycho.

  264. But this just truly shows

  265. how serious God was in this moment.

  266. Each name shows the heartbreak of God.

  267. These names aren't random,

  268. but it shows that God's love

  269. is not sentimental,

  270. it is holy.

  271. His justice

  272. flows from his love,

  273. because his love knows

  274. how harmful sin is.

  275. God's judgment is a father

  276. who refuses

  277. to let children ruin themselves.

  278. God is saying,

  279. you have broken my covenant,

  280. and I will let you feel the weight of it,

  281. not to crush you,

  282. but to awaken you.

  283. When I was younger,

  284. I didn't understand

  285. the rules I was given.

  286. There were things

  287. that I wanted to do,

  288. like run out onto the street

  289. to go and grab a ball,

  290. or stay up all night

  291. and watch TV.

  292. I didn't understand

  293. why I wasn't allowed to do that,

  294. but when I pushed those rules,

  295. there was discipline.

  296. And it felt unfair.

  297. Sometimes I wondered,

  298. why do my parents not like me?

  299. They don't let me do these things.

  300. But what I couldn't see

  301. is that they're actually

  302. doing it out of love.

  303. These boundaries

  304. weren't punishment,

  305. but they are protection.

  306. If they were to just

  307. let me do what I wanted to do,

  308. I could have ended up

  309. getting hurt

  310. or doing something

  311. that I would regret doing.

  312. That's the kind of love

  313. that God has for His people.

  314. He sees us living in sin,

  315. and He doesn't just sit there

  316. and say,

  317. I'll let sin destroy you.

  318. But He wants us to come to Him,

  319. and He wants to protect us,

  320. and that's why there is judgment.

  321. We often think

  322. that the worst thing God can do

  323. is discipline us,

  324. but the real tragedy

  325. is if He stopped caring enough

  326. to confront us.

  327. When God confronts us,

  328. it's grace in disguise.

  329. Think about it.

  330. Grace doesn't always feel good at first.

  331. God's plan is always redemption.

  332. Instead of asking,

  333. why are you doing this to me?

  334. Ask God,

  335. what are you doing in me?

  336. I'm going to repeat that.

  337. Instead of asking,

  338. God,

  339. why are you doing this to me?

  340. The question we should ask is,

  341. God,

  342. what are you doing in me?

  343. When we feel the sting of conviction,

  344. we're truly feeling the touch

  345. of a God who still loves us.

  346. Even after heartbreak

  347. and correction,

  348. the story doesn't end in despair.

  349. The same God

  350. who shows judgment

  351. in verses 4 to 9

  352. is the same God

  353. who brings hope

  354. in verses 10 to 11.

  355. Even when God's people

  356. break His heart,

  357. He refuses to let the story

  358. end in rejection.

  359. His love moves towards restoration.

  360. After all,

  361. the heartbreak,

  362. the warnings,

  363. the names of judgment,

  364. God's tone changes.

  365. It's like the storm clouds break

  366. and light shines through.

  367. Yet the Israelites

  368. will be like the sand

  369. on the seashore,

  370. which cannot be measured

  371. or counted.

  372. In the place where I was said to them,

  373. You are not my people.

  374. They will be called

  375. children of the living God.

  376. The people of Judah

  377. and the people of Israel

  378. will come together.

  379. They will appoint one leader

  380. and will come up

  381. out of the land,

  382. for great will be the day

  383. of Jezreel.

  384. This tells us

  385. that God's mercy

  386. has the final word.

  387. Love doesn't ignore sin.

  388. This is the gospel

  389. foreshadowed

  390. through Hosea.

  391. Judgment isn't the destination,

  392. but it is the doorway

  393. to restoration.

  394. God's love runs

  395. towards His people.

  396. I want you to turn

  397. to Luke 15,

  398. the story of the prodigal son.

  399. We're going to read

  400. verses 20 to 24.

  401. So He got up

  402. and went to His father.

  403. While He was still

  404. a long way off,

  405. His father saw Him

  406. and was filled

  407. with compassion for Him.

  408. He ran to His son,

  409. threw His arms around Him

  410. and kissed Him.

  411. The son said to Him,

  412. Father,

  413. I have sinned against heaven

  414. and against You.

  415. I am no longer worthy

  416. to be called Your son.

  417. But the father said

  418. to his servant,

  419. Quick,

  420. bring the best robe

  421. and put it on him.

  422. Put a ring on his finger

  423. and sandals on his feet.

  424. Bring the fattened calf

  425. and kill it.

  426. Let's have a feast

  427. and celebrate.

  428. For this son of mine

  429. was dead

  430. and is alive again.

  431. He was lost

  432. and is found.

  433. So they began

  434. to celebrate.

  435. So in this story,

  436. we see a young man

  437. who demands

  438. his inheritance early

  439. and then runs off

  440. and wastes it all,

  441. leaving him broke

  442. and starving.

  443. And when he realizes

  444. how far he has fallen,

  445. he walks home

  446. feeling unworthy,

  447. feeling shame,

  448. feeling judgment.

  449. But his father sees him

  450. and he doesn't just wait

  451. for him to come to him.

  452. He runs to him.

  453. The act of him running

  454. shows that he's excited

  455. to see him.

  456. He isn't just waiting

  457. there for him.

  458. And he gives him

  459. a robe,

  460. a ring,

  461. feast,

  462. and he says,

  463. my son was lost.

  464. Now he is found.

  465. This is what Hosea 1,

  466. 10 to 11 is describing.

  467. God doesn't wait

  468. at a distance,

  469. but he runs

  470. towards his people.

  471. He doesn't just ignore sin,

  472. but his mercy

  473. is stronger.

  474. Maybe you've walked away

  475. from God.

  476. Maybe your love for him

  477. has grown cold.

  478. And maybe you feel

  479. like you're too far gone

  480. to return.

  481. But both Hosea

  482. and Luke 15

  483. show us that God's heart

  484. still beats for his people,

  485. including those who wander.

  486. The same God who said,

  487. you are not my people,

  488. is the same God who says

  489. that you are sons and daughters

  490. of the living God.

  491. His mercy doesn't rewrite

  492. the past,

  493. but it redeems it.

  494. So as we look at Hosea 1,

  495. we can feel the weight

  496. of it pressing down.

  497. Each name,

  498. Jezreel,

  499. Lo-Ruhema,

  500. Lo-Ami,

  501. all of these

  502. feel like a final verdict,

  503. like God has given up.

  504. Maybe it feels like

  505. that covenant is shattered,

  506. the intimacy is gone,

  507. but just when you think

  508. it is over,

  509. we see the word yet.

  510. Yet,

  511. the Israelites

  512. will be like the sand

  513. on the seashore,

  514. which cannot be measured

  515. or counted,

  516. in the place

  517. where it was said to them,

  518. you are not my people,

  519. they will be called

  520. children of the living God.

  521. The people of Judah

  522. and the people of Israel

  523. will come together.

  524. They will appoint one leader

  525. and will come up

  526. out of the land,

  527. for great will be

  528. the day of Jezreel.

  529. The word yet

  530. shows the divine mercy

  531. breaking through the silence.

  532. A God who refuses

  533. to let sin

  534. have the last word.

  535. God is saying,

  536. yes,

  537. yes,

  538. they've been unfaithful,

  539. yes,

  540. they've turned away,

  541. but I'm not done,

  542. my covenant still stands.

  543. And then if you look

  544. at Hosea 3,

    Hosea 3:1

  545. verse 1,

  546. the Lord said to me,

  547. go show your love

  548. to your wife again.

  549. Though she is loved

  550. by another man

  551. and is an adulteress,

  552. love her

  553. as the Lord

  554. loves the Israelites.

  555. Though they turn

  556. to other gods

  557. and love the sacred

  558. raisin cakes.

  559. Hosea 3,

  560. 1

  561. helps tie the whole

  562. passage together.

  563. God tells Hosea

  564. to love your wife again.

  565. The Hebrew word

  566. for show your love

  567. is talking about compassion,

  568. not just a passive feeling,

  569. but it's a deliberate choice

  570. to love someone

  571. who has wounded you.

  572. This story here

  573. that we see in Hosea

  574. is the same story

  575. that we see

  576. throughout the gospel.

  577. A God

  578. who chooses

  579. to love his people

  580. even when they choose

  581. to fall away

  582. and stray from him.

  583. Throughout Hosea

  584. 1-3,

  585. God isn't trying

  586. to shame Israel,

  587. but he is revealing

  588. brokenness

  589. in hopes that

  590. they will return

  591. home to him.

  592. God's goal

  593. is always redemption,

  594. not rejection.

  595. Imagine Hosea

  596. standing in the marketplace

  597. and he hears that

  598. Gomer has been sold

  599. to slavery.

  600. The woman

  601. who was once

  602. his wife

  603. sharing that table

  604. with him

  605. is now being sold

  606. to strangers.

  607. He could have said

  608. she made her bed,

  609. let her lie in it.

  610. But we see

  611. in Hosea 2,

  612. So I bought her

  613. for 15 shekels

  614. of silver

  615. and about a homer

  616. and a lethic

  617. of barley.

  618. Then I told her,

  619. You are to live

  620. with me

  621. many days.

  622. You must not

  623. be a prostitute

  624. or be intimate

  625. with any man

  626. and I will behave

  627. the same way

  628. towards you.

  629. So he walks

  630. into that marketplace

  631. and there was

  632. probably people

  633. whispering like,

  634. Oh, that's Hosea.

  635. That's the husband

  636. of this slave here

  637. that's choosing

  638. to live this way.

  639. But yet,

  640. he decides

  641. to buy her back

  642. and we see

  643. verse 3

  644. showing

  645. what Hosea

  646. said to her.

  647. You are to live

  648. with me

  649. many days.

  650. You must not

  651. be a prostitute

  652. or be intimate

  653. with any man

  654. and I will behave

  655. the same way

  656. towards you.

  657. This is not just

  658. Hosea's voice

  659. but this is also

  660. God's voice

  661. when we see

  662. the gospel.

  663. We are those

  664. people,

  665. we are Gomer

  666. in that marketplace

  667. and Jesus

  668. comes in

  669. and decides

  670. to buy us

  671. back.

  672. We're bought

  673. with a price

  674. and we see

  675. that when we

  676. look at Jesus

  677. on the cross

  678. and this price

  679. is not just

  680. 15 shekels,

  681. this price

  682. is so much

  683. more.

  684. This is what

  685. Hosea foreshadows,

  686. not God

  687. walking away

  688. but God

  689. walking towards

  690. us and pursuing

  691. us.

  692. In Hosea's

  693. day,

  694. he said,

  695. You are not

  696. my people,

  697. I am not

  698. your God.

  699. And Paul

  700. picks up

  701. these same

  702. words in

  703. Romans 9,

  704. 25 to 26.

  705. As he says

  706. in Hosea,

  707. I will call

  708. them my

  709. people who

  710. are not

  711. my people

  712. and I will

  713. call her

  714. my loved

  715. one who

  716. is not

  717. my loved

  718. one.

  719. And in

  720. the very

  721. place where

  722. it was said

  723. to them,

  724. you are not

  725. my people,

  726. there they

  727. will be

  728. called children

  729. of the

  730. living God.

  731. What Hosea

  732. foreshadows

  733. in his book,

  734. Jesus fulfills

  735. a love that

  736. goes further,

  737. that pays

  738. an even

  739. bigger price

  740. and welcomes

  741. even more.

  742. So will

  743. you choose

  744. to keep

  745. running or

  746. will you

  747. return to

  748. Christ?

  749. Will you

  750. choose comfort

  751. and distraction

  752. or will you

  753. surrender to

  754. a love that

  755. restores?

  756. Are you

  757. okay with

  758. being called

  759. not my

  760. people or

  761. do you want

  762. to be called

  763. children of

  764. God?

  765. This story

  766. doesn't end

  767. in shame,

  768. it ends

  769. in hope.

  770. These people

  771. were once

  772. called not

  773. my people,

  774. now they

  775. are called

  776. children of

  777. God.

  778. Even in

  779. unfaithfulness,

  780. God is

  781. faithful.

  782. Even when

  783. we run

  784. far,

  785. his mercy

  786. runs further.

  787. Even though

  788. we broke

  789. a covenant,

  790. God's

  791. covenant

  792. still remains.

  793. Maybe your

  794. heart feels

  795. distant,

  796. maybe you

  797. have gone

  798. through the

  799. motions,

  800. still showing

  801. up to

  802. church,

  803. still singing

  804. the songs,

  805. but inside

  806. your heart

  807. has grown

  808. cold.

  809. I want

  810. this story

  811. here from

  812. Hosea,

  813. to be a

  814. reminder and

  815. an invitation

  816. from God

  817. to return.

  818. God is

  819. calling us

  820. to return

  821. to him.

  822. Let's

  823. pray.

  824. Lord,

  825. I thank

  826. you for

  827. these words

  828. that you've

  829. given to

  830. us in

  831. the scripture

  832. and I

  833. pray that

  834. we would

  835. just

  836. throughout

  837. this day

  838. and throughout

  839. this week

  840. be able to

  841. reflect on

  842. the ways

  843. in which we

  844. may have

  845. strayed from

  846. you or

  847. wandered

  848. from you

  849. and just

  850. be able to

  851. reflect on

  852. which idols

  853. we're chasing

  854. after.

  855. It may not

  856. be idols

  857. of wood

  858. or stone

  859. but idols

  860. like comfort

  861. or approval

  862. or money

  863. and I pray

  864. that we

  865. would just

  866. be able to

  867. reflect upon

  868. those and

  869. turn to you

  870. with everything

  871. and that we

  872. wouldn't

  873. continue to

  874. run but

  875. that we

  876. would love

  877. you wholeheartedly.

  878. Praise things

  879. in your name.

  880. Amen.

  881. Amen.

  882. Amen.

  883. Amen.
