  1. fail in some way. And so I felt drawn to preach on these words from Matthew chapter 6 because

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  2. ! these are words I need to hear. So this sermon I'm preaching to myself as much as to you guys.

  3. But as I was going through the preparation, I realized that there's probably many of you for whom these words would also be an encouragement.

  4. So if you have your Bible, you can open it up to Matthew 6 verse 25.

    Matthew 6:25

  5. And it will also be on the screen.

  6. Let me read you these words of Jesus.

  7. He says,

  8. Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear.

  9. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

  10. Look at the birds of the air.

  11. They do not sow, or reap, or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

  12. Are you not much more valuable than they?

  13. Can any one of you, by worrying, add a single hour to your life?

  14. And why do you worry about clothes?

  15. See how the flowers of the field grow.

  16. They do not labor, or spin.

  17. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon, in all of his splendor, was dressed like one of these.

  18. If that's how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,

  19. will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith.

  20. So do not worry, saying, what shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear?

  21. For the pagans run after all these things.

  22. And your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

  23. But seek first his kingdom, and his righteousness.

  24. And all these things will be given to you as well.

  25. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow.

  26. For tomorrow will worry about itself.

  27. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

  28. I love these words of Jesus so much.

  29. Not only does Jesus tell us not to worry, but he gives us reasons.

  30. And these reasons hold such power.

  31. As Jesus piles these reasons, one on top of the other,

  32. they persuade us to let go of our anxiety and our worry,

  33. and to trust God.

  34. One thing that catches my attention in these words is what Jesus tells us not to worry about.

  35. Notice that it's the basics of life.

  36. Food.

  37. Water.

  38. Clothing.

  39. Now some of us might be tempted to think when we hear those things,

  40. you know, I'm not really too worried about those things.

  41. I mean, I've got those covered.

  42. I'm worried about bigger things.

  43. But you know, the more we reflect on these words,

  44. the more we realize that these things like food and drink and clothing,

  45. these are, in a sense, the most important things.

  46. These are the essentials needed for life.

  47. What happens without food and water?

  48. We die.

  49. What happens without clothing?

  50. Here in Canada, we freeze.

  51. In one sense, these things should be our top priority.

  52. Before we spend money on entertainment or sports or a new phone,

  53. we should make sure that we have enough for groceries and gas to get to work and winter boots.

  54. These things are essential to life.

  55. And yet Jesus tells us straight up,

  56. don't worry about them.

  57. If Jesus can convince us

  58. that we don't need to worry about the essentials in life,

  59. maybe we'll realize that we don't need to worry about anything else in life.

  60. If we don't need to worry about food and water and clothing,

  61. without which we die,

  62. then surely we don't need to worry about things of lesser consequence,

  63. like what our next job will be,

  64. or vehicle,

  65. or how we're going to get through next week without forgetting something important.

  66. As we think of this,

  67. we even trace some of our anxiety and our worry about the bigger things

  68. back to some of these little things, these essentials.

  69. Why are we so worried about the number that's going to come back for the car repair bill?

  70. Well, if it's over a certain amount,

  71. will I still have enough in the bank for groceries and all the other bills?

  72. And if I can't get that car fixed,

  73. well, then I won't be able to make it to work,

  74. and then I'm going to lose my job,

  75. and then I won't be able to put food on the table.

  76. But if Jesus can convince us that we don't need to worry,

  77. even about the essentials,

  78. we may realize we don't need to worry about anything else.

  79. And so Jesus starts us off here with this one simple command.

  80. He says,

  81. Do not worry about your life.

  82. What you'll eat or drink or what you'll wear.

  83. And then he begins to reason with our hearts about why not.

  84. Reason number one,

  85. why not to worry.

  86. He says,

  87. Is not life more than food?

  88. And the body more than clothes?

  89. As I just said,

  90. food and clothing are arguably two of the most important things for life.

  91. And yet Jesus basically says,

  92. No, they're not.

  93. Life is about so much more than what you eat,

  94. or drink,

  95. or what you wear.

  96. Those things,

  97. which are essential,

  98. are actually relatively insignificant.

  99. You kind of think about it,

  100. food and drink,

  101. that's just the fuel for a life.

  102. And clothing,

  103. that's just the covering for the body.

  104. Far more important than the fuel that goes in the tank

  105. is where you're driving with the car.

  106. What you're doing with the life God has given you.

  107. Far more important than the covering for the body

  108. is the body itself.

  109. And what God gave you your body for.

  110. What are you doing with the body that God has given you?

  111. There's almost a sense in which Jesus is saying,

  112. you're worried,

  113. you're concerned about the wrong things.

  114. As important as they may seem,

  115. God made you for far more than eating,

  116. and drinking,

  117. and dressing yourself.

  118. What kind of life are you living?

  119. How are you using the body He has given you?

  120. That's what you should be focused on.

  121. I wonder,

  122. how much of our worry and anxiety

  123. can be traced back

  124. to misplaced priorities?

  125. I was worrying the other day

  126. about what would happen

  127. if I didn't get all my leaves raked up

  128. before the snow came.

  129. I spent a lot of time thinking about that.

  130. And of course,

  131. there's wisdom in getting at them

  132. before they become a snow-crusted pile

  133. of ice in the spring.

  134. They're certainly faster to deal with

  135. and easier when they're dry.

  136. And it's a lot more enjoyable

  137. to scoop dry leaves into a bag

  138. than wet leaves.

  139. But how much mental and emotional energy

  140. should I invest

  141. into a bunch of little dead things

  142. on the ground?

  143. What's the worst that will happen

  144. if they just sit there

  145. through the winter?

  146. It's the stuff of earth.

  147. And meanwhile,

  148. I could have been thinking

  149. about the stuff of heaven

  150. and the things that are most important in life.

  151. Jesus gives a second reason

  152. not to worry.

  153. And he gives it in the form

  154. of an object lesson.

  155. Verse 26.

  156. He says,

  157. Look at the birds of the air.

  158. They do not sow

  159. or reap

  160. or store away in barns.

  161. And yet,

  162. your heavenly Father

  163. feeds them.

  164. Are you not much more valuable

  165. than they?

  166. I love this.

  167. Look at the birds,

  168. says Jesus.

  169. Bird watching is biblical.

  170. It's a God-ordained hobby.

  171. Look at them.

  172. And what does Jesus want us to notice

  173. about the birds?

  174. Are they planting crops?

  175. No.

  176. Are they harvesting

  177. what they've planted?

  178. No.

  179. Are they storing up in barns

  180. the things that they've harvested?

  181. No.

  182. Are they making sure

  183. they have a few thousand dollars

  184. in an emergency fund?

  185. No.

  186. Do they even work?

  187. Kind of,

  188. but not really.

  189. They just fly about

  190. here and there

  191. and gather up

  192. what God provides

  193. each day.

  194. Look at them,

  195. says Jesus.

  196. Don't worry about tomorrow

  197. or next week

  198. or next month.

  199. They don't dig up seeds

  200. and plant them

  201. in their own little bird gardens

  202. or fields

  203. and tend them

  204. so that they can make it through

  205. the next season ahead.

  206. How do they survive?

  207. Jesus answers,

  208. your heavenly Father feeds them.

  209. God pays attention

  210. to the birds

  211. and he governs

  212. everything in the world

  213. just so

  214. that each day

  215. there's something

  216. of his provision

  217. there for them.

  218. An insect hatch,

  219. a bird feeder

  220. in someone's backyard,

  221. a soaking rain

  222. that brings up

  223. worms.

  224. my grandmother

  225. used to butter

  226. a slice of bread

  227. and put it out

  228. for a grackle

  229. in her backyard

  230. that had a wounded wing.

  231. If God takes care

  232. to feed the birds,

  233. will he not take care

  234. of you?

  235. What's a bird

  236. compared to a human being?

  237. human beings,

  238. God has made us

  239. in his own image.

  240. We are precious to him.

  241. Jesus is saying,

  242. you are so much more valuable

  243. to God

  244. than birds.

  245. And if he looks after them

  246. each day,

  247. will he not look after you

  248. today,

  249. tomorrow,

  250. and the next day?

  251. And so reason number two

  252. not to worry is

  253. because God cares deeply

  254. about you

  255. and about me.

  256. He already proves

  257. his faithful care

  258. with the lesser critters

  259. of the earth.

  260. How much more

  261. does he notice

  262. and tend to our needs

  263. as our loving creator

  264. and father?

  265. Reason number three

  266. comes in verse 27.

  267. Reason three

  268. not to worry.

  269. Jesus asked

  270. this rhetorical question.

  271. Can any one of you

  272. by worrying

  273. add a single hour

  274. to your life?

  275. Now there's some

  276. translation variation here.

  277. Some say,

  278. can anyone

  279. add a cubit

  280. to his height?

  281. Which would be

  282. a metaphor

  283. if that was

  284. the right way

  285. to read it.

  286. Some say,

  287. a day,

  288. add a day

  289. to his life.

  290. Whatever the case,

  291. whatever the right

  292. translation is,

  293. Jesus' point

  294. is the same thing.

  295. He's basically saying

  296. worrying about things

  297. is pointless.

  298. When you're worrying

  299. about things,

  300. you can't actually

  301. add

  302. or do anything

  303. good

  304. by it.

  305. It doesn't

  306. accomplish anything

  307. for you.

  308. Your lifespan

  309. is as long

  310. as it will be.

  311. Or in the case

  312. of height,

  313. it's not going

  314. to change

  315. by worrying

  316. about all this stuff.

  317. Worrying is a

  318. waste of time.

  319. It's a waste

  320. of energy.

  321. It's a waste

  322. of thought.

  323. It's a waste

  324. of our emotional

  325. energy.

  326. It can't accomplish

  327. anything good

  328. for you,

  329. and so,

  330. why bother

  331. worrying at all?

  332. Why not just

  333. give it up

  334. and be like

  335. one of the birds

  336. looking to God

  337. each day

  338. for your daily

  339. bread?

  340. Jesus goes on,

  341. verse 28,

  342. he says,

  343. and why do you

  344. worry about clothes?

  345. See how the flowers

  346. of the field

  347. grow.

  348. They do not

  349. labor or spin.

  350. Yet I tell you

  351. that even Solomon

  352. in all his splendor

  353. was dressed

  354. like one of these.

  355. If that's how

  356. God clothes

  357. the grass

  358. of the field,

  359. which is here

  360. today,

  361. and tomorrow

  362. is thrown

  363. into the fire,

  364. will he not

  365. much more

  366. clothe you,

  367. you of little

  368. faith?

  369. There's a couple

  370. different ways

  371. we might worry

  372. about clothes.

  373. one way

  374. is to worry

  375. about having

  376. the clothes

  377. that we need.

  378. Clothing can

  379. be expensive,

  380. especially footwear,

  381. jackets,

  382. dress clothes

  383. for special

  384. occasions.

  385. The other way

  386. we can worry

  387. about clothes

  388. is when we

  389. care too much

  390. about fashion

  391. and self-image,

  392. appearance,

  393. and beauty.

  394. Jesus seems

  395. to address

  396. both here.

  397. He says,

  398. see how the

  399. flowers of the

  400. field grow.

  401. Go out and look

  402. at the flowers.

  403. Do you see

  404. how beautifully

  405. they're dressed?

  406. They do not

  407. labor or spin.

  408. Back in ancient

  409. times,

  410. many made

  411. their own

  412. clothes,

  413. and it was

  414. a lot of work.

  415. It was very

  416. labor intensive.

  417. They used

  418. spinning wheels

  419. to make their

  420. own thread

  421. from wool

  422. or plant fibers,

  423. and then they

  424. had to weave

  425. that thread

  426. into cloth

  427. and make

  428. their own

  429. cloth,

  430. and then they

  431. could use

  432. the cloth

  433. finally to

  434. make a

  435. garment,

  436. and they

  437. of course

  438. didn't have

  439. all the

  440. fancy machines

  441. that we

  442. have today,

  443. and so it

  444. was labor.

  445. It was work.

  446. Jesus says,

  447. go outside

  448. and look at

  449. the flowers.

  450. See how

  451. beautifully

  452. they're dressed,

  453. and what

  454. did those

  455. flowers do

  456. to clothe

  457. themselves

  458. so beautifully?

  459. Nothing.

  460. They did

  461. no work.

  462. They spun

  463. no wool,

  464. and yet

  465. even the

  466. richest man

  467. to ever

  468. live on

  469. the earth,

  470. King Solomon

  471. himself,

  472. wasn't dressed

  473. as well

  474. as the

  475. flowers in

  476. the field.

  477. It was

  478. God who

  479. gave them

  480. that clothing

  481. and made

  482. them to

  483. look like

  484. that,

  485. so that

  486. they look

  487. better to

  488. the human

  489. eye than

  490. the richest

  491. of kings

  492. wearing the

  493. most expensive

  494. clothes.

  495. God made

  496. them

  497. beautiful,

  498. and if

  499. God made

  500. such

  501. beautiful

  502. clothing

  503. for

  504. something

  505. that's

  506. of

  507. little

  508. more

  509. value

  510. than

  511. grass,

  512. think of

  513. this,

  514. a flower

  515. is so

  516. beautiful,

  517. and yet

  518. it wasn't

  519. even made

  520. to last.

  521. It's here

  522. today,

  523. and Jesus

  524. says tomorrow

  525. it's thrown

  526. into the

  527. fire.

  528. Think to

  529. that bunch

  530. of flowers

  531. that maybe

  532. you received

  533. if you're

  534. a lady,

  535. or your

  536. wife received

  537. if you're

  538. a man,

  539. that bouquet.

  540. It was

  541. beautiful

  542. the day

  543. it arrived,

  544. and then a

  545. few weeks

  546. later,

  547. even with

  548. water and

  549. plant food,

  550. the petals

  551. and leaves

  552. are all

  553. shriveled up

  554. and dead.

  555. What do you

  556. do with it?

  557. You take the

  558. whole thing

  559. and you just

  560. throw it

  561. in the

  562. garbage.

  563. Even if

  564. it's planted

  565. in soil,

  566. flowers have

  567. their season,

  568. and before

  569. long they

  570. wither and

  571. die and

  572. are worthless.

  573. But,

  574. says Jesus,

  575. if God

  576. takes care

  577. to clothe

  578. something worth

  579. so little,

  580. so beautifully,

  581. won't he

  582. take even

  583. better care

  584. to clothe

  585. you?

  586. A precious

  587. person made

  588. in his own

  589. image.

  590. And so

  591. here's another

  592. reason not to

  593. worry about

  594. things.

  595. God cares

  596. for us and

  597. loves us far

  598. more than we

  599. sometimes realize.

  600. at the end

  601. of verse 30

  602. here,

  603. I think

  604. Jesus touches

  605. a bit of

  606. a nerve.

  607. He says,

  608. will he not

  609. much more

  610. clothe you,

  611. you of

  612. little faith?

  613. What's the

  614. problem with

  615. worrying?

  616. It's a lack

  617. of faith.

  618. When we're

  619. worrying about

  620. all sorts of

  621. things,

  622. it's because

  623. we're not

  624. trusting God

  625. the way that

  626. we should be.

  627. and in

  628. this case,

  629. what's

  630. Jesus trying

  631. to encourage

  632. us to

  633. trust about

  634. God?

  635. To believe

  636. about God?

  637. He's trying

  638. to point our

  639. faith at

  640. something about

  641. God that if

  642. we see it,

  643. all our worries

  644. will just

  645. melt away.

  646. And it

  647. could be that

  648. we've not yet

  649. known God to

  650. be like this

  651. personally,

  652. or it could

  653. be that we've

  654. simply forgotten

  655. or lost sight

  656. of God and

  657. how he's like

  658. this.

  659. It could be

  660. that we need

  661. to just be

  662. reminded that

  663. he is a

  664. good and

  665. loving and

  666. attentive

  667. father to

  668. us.

  669. He's never

  670. oblivious to

  671. our needs.

  672. If he pays

  673. attention to

  674. the birds and

  675. the grass,

  676. then we are

  677. in his

  678. attention to.

  679. How much

  680. more will

  681. he meet

  682. all our

  683. needs with

  684. the riches

  685. of his

  686. goodness and

  687. grace if we

  688. look to him?

  689. That's who he

  690. is.

  691. We can count

  692. on him and

  693. trust him with

  694. everything in

  695. life.

  696. And so it's

  697. as if Jesus

  698. is, I worry

  699. when we have

  700. a father in

  701. heaven like

  702. him looking

  703. out for us.

  704. Jesus goes

  705. on, he says,

  706. so do not

  707. worry, saying

  708. what shall we

  709. eat or what

  710. shall we

  711. drink or what

  712. shall we

  713. wear?

  714. For the

  715. pagans run

  716. after all

  717. these things

  718. and your

  719. heavenly father

  720. knows that

  721. you need

  722. them.

  723. Jesus

  724. restates his

  725. imperative.

  726. Do not

  727. worry.

  728. Don't run

  729. around in a

  730. panicked

  731. frenzy,

  732. anxious about

  733. all the

  734. things.

  735. Why not?

  736. God.

  737. And Jesus

  738. maybe touches

  739. another nerve

  740. here.

  741. He says,

  742. that's what

  743. the pagans

  744. do.

  745. Who are

  746. the pagans?

  747. This word

  748. sometimes is

  749. translated Gentiles

  750. or nations,

  751. but I think in

  752. context here,

  753. it refers to

  754. all the people

  755. of the world

  756. who don't

  757. know God,

  758. who don't

  759. know the

  760. one true

  761. God.

  762. They run

  763. after food

  764. and drink

  765. and clothing,

  766. frantically

  767. striving for

  768. those things,

  769. worrying about

  770. those kinds

  771. of things.

  772. Why?

  773. Because they

  774. don't know

  775. God.

  776. It's as

  777. Jesus is

  778. saying,

  779. worrying is

  780. the norm

  781. for those

  782. who don't

  783. know

  784. our heavenly

  785. father.

  786. What comfort

  787. do they have?

  788. What assurance

  789. do they have?

  790. What hope

  791. do they have

  792. if they don't

  793. know the

  794. God who

  795. made them

  796. and loves

  797. them?

  798. And so

  799. there's an

  800. implication

  801. here too

  802. and this

  803. is where

  804. it may

  805. touch a

  806. nerve.

  807. The

  808. implication

  809. that when

  810. we worry

  811. we're

  812. living like

  813. the world.

  814. We're

  815. living like

  816. those who

  817. don't know

  818. God

  819. when we

  820. worry.

  821. And of

  822. course,

  823. that doesn't

  824. honor him

  825. or please

  826. him.

  827. Worry

  828. actually

  829. diminishes

  830. our witness

  831. to Jesus

  832. and to

  833. God.

  834. God

  835. shows

  836. we

  837. don't

  838. really

  839. trust

  840. our

  841. God

  842. or

  843. believe

  844. that

  845. he

  846. will

  847. look

  848. after

  849. us.

  850. It's

  851. yet another

  852. reason

  853. why not

  854. to worry.

  855. Here's a

  856. sixth reason

  857. to pile

  858. on top

  859. of the

  860. previous

  861. five.

  862. Jesus

  863. says,

  864. the pagans

  865. run after

  866. all these

  867. things

  868. and your

  869. heavenly

  870. father

  871. knows

  872. that you

  873. need

  874. them.

  875. He

  876. knows

  877. that you

  878. need

  879. them.

  880. God

  881. is never

  882. unaware

  883. of the

  884. needs

  885. that you

  886. have.

  887. He's

  888. like a

  889. father

  890. who sees

  891. every

  892. need

  893. of his

  894. child

  895. and is

  896. totally

  897. dialed

  898. in.

  899. He

  900. knows

  901. exactly

  902. what's

  903. happening

  904. in our

  905. lives.

  906. Earlier

  907. in this

  908. same

  909. chapter

  910. in verse

  911. eight

  912. Jesus

  913. said

  914. this

  915. he said

  916. for your

  917. father

  918. knows

  919. what you

  920. need

  921. before

  922. you

  923. ask

  924. him.

  925. In

  926. another

  927. place

  928. Jesus

  929. says

  930. that

  931. even

  932. the

  933. hairs

  934. on

  935. our

  936. head

  937. are

  938. numbered

  939. by

  940. God.

  941. God

  942. knows

  943. you

  944. even

  945. better

  946. than

  947. you

  948. know

  949. yourself.

  950. He

  951. knows

  952. what

  953. you

  954. need

  955. even

  956. better

  957. than

  958. you

  959. know

  960. what

  961. you

  962. need.

  963. Sometimes

  964. in our

  965. worries

  966. one of

  967. the

  968. things

  969. that

  970. swirls

  971. around

  972. in our

  973. hearts

  974. and in

  975. our

  976. minds

  977. is

  978. this

  979. thought

  980. that

  981. we're

  982. all

  983. alone

  984. in

  985. life

  986. that

  987. nobody

  988. fully

  989. understands

  990. what

  991. we're

  992. going

  993. through.

  994. If

  995. they

  996. did

  997. you

  998. know

  999. maybe

  1000. they

  1001. could

  1002. help

  1003. but

  1004. they

  1005. don't

  1006. they

  1007. can't

  1008. sometimes

  1009. in our

  1010. worries

  1011. we get

  1012. thinking

  1013. about

  1014. our

  1015. how

  1016. it's

  1017. all

  1018. up

  1019. to

  1020. me

  1021. this

  1022. decision

  1023. that's

  1024. in

  1025. front

  1026. of

  1027. me

  1028. and

  1029. only

  1030. I

  1031. truly

  1032. can

  1033. understand

  1034. the

  1035. decision

  1036. before

  1037. me

  1038. and

  1039. it's

  1040. either

  1041. going

  1042. to

  1043. make

  1044. or

  1045. break

  1046. things

  1047. but

  1048. none

  1049. of

  1050. this

  1051. is

  1052. true.

  1053. You

  1054. are

  1055. not

  1056. the

  1057. only

  1058. one

  1059. who

  1060. understands

  1061. what's

  1062. going

  1063. on

  1064. in

  1065. your

  1066. life.

  1067. You

  1068. are

  1069. not

  1070. the

  1071. only

  1072. one

  1073. who

  1074. understands

  1075. the

  1076. decisions

  1077. ahead

  1078. of

  1079. you.

  1080. The

  1081. things

  1082. that

  1083. are

  1084. causing

  1085. you

  1086. stress

  1087. and

  1088. worry.

  1089. God

  1090. knows.

  1091. He

  1092. sees

  1093. and

  1094. understands

  1095. what

  1096. you

  1097. need

  1098. exactly

  1099. what

  1100. you

  1101. need

  1102. even

  1103. better

  1104. than

  1105. you

  1106. do.

  1107. So

  1108. do

  1109. not

  1110. worry

  1111. says

  1112. Jesus.

  1113. Trust

  1114. him.

  1115. We

  1116. come

  1117. now to

  1118. one of

  1119. the most

  1120. famous

  1121. words

  1122. of

  1123. Jesus.

  1124. Not

  1125. quite

  1126. John

  1127. 3

  1128. 16

  1129. but

  1130. almost

  1131. up

  1132. there

  1133. with

  1134. John

  1135. 3

  1136. 16.

  1137. Jesus

  1138. says

  1139. but

  1140. seek

  1141. first

  1142. his

  1143. kingdom

  1144. and

  1145. his

  1146. righteousness

  1147. and

  1148. all

  1149. these

  1150. things

  1151. will

  1152. be

  1153. given

  1154. to

  1155. you

  1156. as

  1157. well.

  1158. This

  1159. isn't

  1160. just a

  1161. reason

  1162. not

  1163. to

  1164. worry.

  1165. This

  1166. is

  1167. something

  1168. to

  1169. do

  1170. instead

  1171. of

  1172. worrying.

  1173. Jesus

  1174. gives

  1175. us

  1176. something

  1177. to

  1178. seek

  1179. instead

  1180. of

  1181. food

  1182. and

  1183. drink

  1184. and

  1185. clothing

  1186. and

  1187. the

  1188. stuff

  1189. we

  1190. need.

  1191. He

  1192. says

  1193. seek

  1194. your

  1195. father's

  1196. kingdom.

  1197. Seek

  1198. your

  1199. father's

  1200. righteousness.

  1201. Up

  1202. until

  1203. now

  1204. we've

  1205. been

  1206. told

  1207. what

  1208. not

  1209. to

  1210. do.

  1211. Don't

  1212. worry.

  1213. And

  1214. we

  1215. might

  1216. even

  1217. get

  1218. the

  1219. idea

  1220. that we

  1221. should

  1222. be

  1223. concerned

  1224. about

  1225. nothing

  1226. and

  1227. that

  1228. God

  1229. just

  1230. wants

  1231. us

  1232. to

  1233. live

  1234. this

  1235. life

  1236. devoid

  1237. of

  1238. all

  1239. striving.

  1240. A

  1241. life

  1242. of

  1243. just

  1244. waking

  1245. up

  1246. each

  1247. day

  1248. to

  1249. embrace

  1250. God's

  1251. provision

  1252. for the

  1253. day.

  1254. But

  1255. no,

  1256. here

  1257. Jesus

  1258. gives us

  1259. something

  1260. to seek

  1261. after,

  1262. something

  1263. to strive

  1264. towards.

  1265. Seek

  1266. your

  1267. father's

  1268. kingdom.

  1269. Seek

  1270. your

  1271. father's

  1272. righteousness.

  1273. As we

  1274. heard a

  1275. moment ago,

  1276. life is

  1277. more than

  1278. food.

  1279. And here

  1280. Jesus tells

  1281. us what

  1282. that

  1283. more is.

  1284. What's

  1285. worth

  1286. pursuing

  1287. with our

  1288. lives?

  1289. What's

  1290. far more

  1291. important than

  1292. even the

  1293. essentials?

  1294. And it's the

  1295. kingdom of

  1296. God.

  1297. What's the

  1298. kingdom of

  1299. God?

  1300. I had a

  1301. little

  1302. shudder in

  1303. my office

  1304. just thinking

  1305. of how to

  1306. even answer

  1307. that question.

  1308. This is a

  1309. big question

  1310. with a

  1311. really,

  1312. really big

  1313. answer.

  1314. in fact,

  1315. I would

  1316. argue that

  1317. even to

  1318. get to

  1319. a working

  1320. sense of

  1321. what the

  1322. kingdom of

  1323. God is,

  1324. we have to

  1325. read through

  1326. this whole

  1327. thing carefully,

  1328. cover to

  1329. cover,

  1330. and pray,

  1331. and think

  1332. deeply on

  1333. it,

  1334. and talk to

  1335. God about

  1336. it.

  1337. Seeking the

  1338. kingdom of

  1339. God, I

  1340. would say,

  1341. is a

  1342. lifelong

  1343. pursuit.

  1344. Both

  1345. understanding

  1346. what it

  1347. is,

  1348. and how

  1349. we should

  1350. live in

  1351. light of

  1352. it.

  1353. Jesus spoke

  1354. a ton about

  1355. the kingdom

  1356. of God.

  1357. It has to

  1358. do with what

  1359. God has been

  1360. up to for

  1361. thousands of

  1362. years of

  1363. human history,

  1364. leading up to

  1365. this moment

  1366. where we are

  1367. listening to

  1368. Jesus.

  1369. It has to

  1370. do with many

  1371. great promises

  1372. he has made.

  1373. It has to

  1374. do with

  1375. Jesus, the

  1376. king that

  1377. God has

  1378. chosen for

  1379. his kingdom.

  1380. And it all

  1381. culminates in

  1382. the great and

  1383. glorious end to

  1384. the story of

  1385. our world.

  1386. One final

  1387. glorious kingdom

  1388. which will

  1389. never end or

  1390. fall.

  1391. Sometimes we

  1392. call it

  1393. heaven.

  1394. But that

  1395. one word

  1396. barely even

  1397. scratches the

  1398. surface of

  1399. it.

  1400. That should

  1401. be your

  1402. first priority,

  1403. says Jesus.

  1404. Seek first

  1405. his kingdom.

  1406. And there's a

  1407. second thing

  1408. Jesus tells us

  1409. to seek.

  1410. Instead of the

  1411. stuff of this

  1412. world, he

  1413. says, seek

  1414. your father's

  1415. righteousness.

  1416. Now some

  1417. here will

  1418. point to what

  1419. Paul says in

  1420. Romans about

  1421. righteousness and

  1422. explain this in

  1423. this way.

  1424. They would say

  1425. that we should

  1426. seek a right

  1427. standing with

  1428. God, which we

  1429. don't have.

  1430. And we can get

  1431. it by faith in

  1432. Jesus.

  1433. And that's true.

  1434. That's what Paul

  1435. teaches in

  1436. Romans.

  1437. But there's

  1438. another kind of

  1439. righteousness that

  1440. is God's.

  1441. And it has to

  1442. do with his

  1443. character and

  1444. how he does

  1445. what is good

  1446. and right.

  1447. And so when

  1448. Jesus says, seek

  1449. his righteousness,

  1450. I think he's

  1451. commanding us to

  1452. strive to live

  1453. righteously as

  1454. God our

  1455. father is

  1456. righteous.

  1457. To be holy as

  1458. God is holy.

  1459. I think this

  1460. fits with what

  1461. Jesus has already

  1462. been saying here.

  1463. Life is about

  1464. more than the

  1465. food and drink in

  1466. your belly or the

  1467. clothes on your

  1468. back.

  1469. what are you

  1470. doing with your

  1471. life?

  1472. What are you

  1473. doing with your

  1474. body?

  1475. God desires his

  1476. children, his

  1477. precious blood

  1478. bought sons and

  1479. daughters to live

  1480. righteously with

  1481. the life that he

  1482. has given them.

  1483. To be people who

  1484. do an abundance of

  1485. good works and who

  1486. bear much good

  1487. fruit.

  1488. People who are

  1489. honest, who have

  1490. integrity, who are

  1491. full of his love

  1492. and kindness.

  1493. Seek to live this

  1494. way with the life

  1495. that you've been

  1496. given.

  1497. Do what's right

  1498. according to God's

  1499. righteousness in

  1500. every situation.

  1501. That's what I think

  1502. Jesus means when he

  1503. says, seek his

  1504. righteousness.

  1505. And then there's

  1506. this amazing promise

  1507. that comes at the

  1508. end here.

  1509. One of the most

  1510. amazing, liberating

  1511. promises of the

  1512. Christian life.

  1513. But seek first his

  1514. kingdom and his

  1515. righteousness and all

  1516. these things will be

  1517. given to you as

  1518. well.

  1519. What are we aiming

  1520. to do with our

  1521. lives as first

  1522. priority?

  1523. Jesus says that if

  1524. we're seeking his

  1525. kingdom and his

  1526. righteousness as

  1527. first priority, then

1528. God will give us all

  1529. the things that we

  1530. need.

  1531. Everything.

  1532. Whether food or

  1533. clothing, a place to

  1534. live, a vehicle to

  1535. drive, whatever it

  1536. is.

1537. And it might not be

  1538. obvious at first,

1539. well if I turn my

  1540. attention to that,

  1541. then how is that

  1542. going to look after

  1543. all this stuff?

  1544. It might not be

  1545. obvious or apparent

  1546. how that works.

  1547. And that's where

  1548. faith and trust come

  1549. in.

  1550. God's asking us to

  1551. trust him.

1552. I'm going to give it

  1553. to you.

  1554. If you seek my

  1555. father's kingdom and

  1556. my father's

  1557. righteousness, I

  1558. will give you

  1559. everything else you

  1560. need.

  1561. I'll take care of

  1562. the rest.

  1563. Is the kingdom of

  1564. God your first

  1565. priority?

  1566. Is living a

  1567. righteous life to

  1568. honor the Lord your

  1569. top goal?

  1570. Have you been

  1571. seeking his

  1572. kingdom and

  1573. righteousness?

  1574. Or have you been

  1575. running after the

  1576. earthly things like

  1577. the people of the

  1578. world around us who

  1579. don't know God?

  1580. Finally, Jesus gives

  1581. us a couple more

  1582. reasons not to worry

  1583. in the last verse

  1584. there, verse 34.

  1585. He says,

  1586. Therefore do not

  1587. worry about tomorrow,

  1588. for tomorrow will

  1589. worry about itself.

  1590. Each day has

  1591. enough trouble of

  1592. its own.

  1593. There's often that

  1594. forward dimension to

  1595. our worry, where

  1596. we're looking ahead,

  1597. we're trying to

  1598. figure out, we're

  1599. trying to decide, and

  1600. what if this happens,

  1601. and what if that

  1602. happens, and what if

  1603. they say this, and

1604. what if, and should I

1605. say this, and we can

1606. go on and on and on,

1607. and we get all panicked

  1608. and anxious because we

  1609. don't know what

  1610. tomorrow holds.

  1611. Jesus says, just let

  1612. tomorrow's things be

  1613. tomorrow's things.

  1614. Don't worry about

  1615. them.

  1616. Give your attention to

  1617. today, to here and

  1618. now.

  1619. Live in this moment.

  1620. Tomorrow's things, you

  1621. can focus on tomorrow.

  1622. Each day has enough

  1623. trouble of its own.

  1624. We weren't meant to

  1625. try and carry the

  1626. burden of today, and

  1627. tomorrow, and next week,

1628. and next month, all at

  1629. once.

1630. Only God knows what the

1631. future holds for any of

  1632. us.

1633. And because he does, we

1634. can let go of our

  1635. worries, which pertain to

  1636. tomorrow.

1637. God has it in his hand.

  1638. He's in control.

1639. So I can focus on today.

1640. I can focus on right here

  1641. and now.

1642. I can even look ahead and

  1643. make plans for tomorrow,

1644. and what to do tomorrow,

1645. but I need to leave those

1646. plans with God, and not

  1647. worry about them all

  1648. through the day.

1649. One day's trouble is all

1650. we need to manage, says

  1651. Jesus.

  1652. Somewhere in the

  1653. preparing of this, I

1654. lost track of how many

  1655. reasons this was.

  1656. Is that nine reasons?

  1657. Maybe?

  1658. Nine reasons not to

  1659. worry?

1660. Well, as we come to the

  1661. Lord's table this morning,

  1662. let's make it ten.

1663. We may hear all of these

1664. reasons not to worry, and

1665. yet we may still have this

  1666. nagging suspicion.

  1667. or doubt about whether

1668. God will really look after

  1669. us.

1670. Will he really take care of

  1671. all my needs?

1672. One final place to look,

  1673. Romans 8, verse 32.

    Romans 8:32

  1674. Paul writes this, he

  1675. says,

1676. If God is for us, who can

  1677. be against us?

1678. He who did not spare his

1679. own son, but gave him up

  1680. for us all.

1681. How will he not also, along

1682. with him, graciously give us

  1683. all things?

1684. If God has already given us

  1685. the greatest and most

1686. valuable gift that can ever

  1687. be given, that's Jesus.

1688. How will he not also, along

1689. with Jesus, give us all

  1690. things?

1691. everything that we might need.

1692. It says, God did not spare

  1693. him.

1694. He gave him for our rescue and

  1695. for our ransom.

1696. Jesus' blood was the cost that

  1697. justice required for our

  1698. atonement.

1699. His body, he gave willingly.

1700. He hung and died on the cross.

1701. The innocent for the guilty.

  1702. The righteous for the

  1703. unrighteous.

1704. The king for the people of

  1705. the kingdom.

1706. If God gave that for you and

  1707. for me, what's tomorrow's

  1708. bread and water?

  1709. What's tomorrow's power bill

  1710. money?

1711. What's the next vehicle you

  1712. need?

1713. Or job, or home, or

  1714. whatever?

1715. So let's go to the table

  1716. now.

1717. Let's reflect on the gift

1718. that's been given to make

  1719. us children of our

  1720. heavenly father.

1721. Let's think about the body

1722. of Jesus as he suffered

  1723. and died for us.

1724. Let's think about the blood

1725. of Jesus which was poured

1726. out for us on the cross.

  1727. Let's have a few moments

  1728. of quiet to pray.

  1729. we can confess our

  1730. worries, the things that

  1731. we've been worrying about

  1732. and our cares.

1733. We can confess our lack of

1734. trust and our lack of

  1735. faith.

1736. But we can also rejoice and

1737. be reminded again of God's

1738. love and grace for us.

  1739. In a few moments we'll have

1740. Charles and Dave come up to

1741. serve the elements of the

  1742. table.

1743. And if you've put your life in

1744. Jesus' hands, then I want

1745. to invite you to join with us

1746. and partake with us of the

  1747. bread and the cup.

1748. And if not, then you can

1749. just let them pass you by.

  1750. We'll wait until everybody's

1751. been served and then we'll

  1752. partake together.

  1753. Amen.
