  1. Alright, well we are continuing our way through the Gospel of Luke and we are in chapter 8.

  2. And at this point in the story Luke gives us a little bit of a big picture, a little bit of a summary about what is happening around this time with Jesus.

  3. Let me just read it for us from Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  4. After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.

  5. The twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases.

  6. Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had come out.

  7. Joanna, the wife of Chusa, the manager of Herod's household.

  8. Susanna, and many others.

  9. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

  10. So Jesus is preaching.

  11. And again, Luke's reminding us that Jesus was not just a healer and a miracle worker.

  12. He came with a message.

  13. And his message was good news.

  14. Good news about what?

  15. The kingdom of God.

  16. The good news of Jesus is the kingdom of God.

  17. Already when we get to this point in the story, we might scratch our heads and wonder,

  18. what is the good news of the kingdom of God?

  19. Well, in another occasion, Jesus was heard saying these words in Mark's gospel.

  20. The kingdom of God has come near.

  21. Repent and believe the good news.

  22. So this was his message, that the kingdom of God has come near.

  23. And what kingdom is this?

  24. As I said last Sunday, to really understand this, we need to look back in our Bibles.

  25. We could look back to the kingdom that God established for his people through Saul.

  26. And then later, especially through David.

  27. God made some amazing promises to David.

  28. He not only chose David to be the king over Israel,

  29. but he promised that David's throne, his kingdom, would endure forever.

  30. And then we can think back to what we heard at the beginning of Luke's gospel.

  31. What did Gabriel reveal to Mary?

  32. Gabriel said that her son, to be born, would be given the throne of his father David.

  33. And that he would reign over Jacob's descendants forever.

  34. In a kingdom that would never end.

  35. This is the kingdom that Jesus is talking about.

  36. It's the kingdom of God, because it's the kingdom that comes from God.

  37. It's established by God.

  38. It has its source in him.

  39. And this kingdom is near, because the king of this kingdom has now come.

  40. He has been born.

  41. And he is here.

  42. And his people put their faith in Jesus, the king.

  43. The citizenship of this kingdom is growing.

  44. And yet, at the same time, many people had different expectations of this kingdom.

  45. Many expected that it would resemble the kingdom of Israel from ancient times.

  46. Many anticipated an earthly, geopolitical government and rule, with the Messiah leading the charge and kicking the Roman Empire out.

  47. Establishing an earthly throne.

  48. And already, Jesus has not been acting or measuring up to those kinds of expectations.

  49. And yet, Jesus continues to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God.

  50. He continues to call people to repent and believe this good news, that the great kingdom of God is near.

  51. As we'll see eventually, the rise of this kingdom will defy all expectations.

  52. The path of Jesus to the throne will be through suffering, death, and resurrection.

  53. And the full establishment of this kingdom awaits the second coming of Jesus in the distant future, when he returns from heaven.

  54. So, Jesus went from one town and village to another, preaching this kingdom.

  55. And Luke tells us that the twelve were with him.

  56. The twelve disciples.

  57. And not just the twelve, but also a large cohort of women.

  58. And there's certainly some interesting details in there about the women.

  59. But, for time's sake, we'll pass over those this morning.

  60. What Luke really wants to get to and tell us about is what happened on one occasion, and possibly more than one,

  61. where Jesus gave the people this teaching.

  62. Verse 4.

  63. While a large crowd was gathering, and people were coming to Jesus from town after town,

  64. he told this parable.

  65. A farmer went out to sow his seed.

  66. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path.

  67. It was trampled on, and the birds ate it up.

  68. Some fell on rocky ground.

  69. And when it came up, the plants withered, because they had no moisture.

  70. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it, and choked the plants.

  71. Still other seed fell on good soil.

  72. It came up and yielded a crop a hundred times more than was sown.

  73. When he had said this, Jesus called out,

  74. Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.

  75. Now imagine for a moment that you just traveled several hours to hear Jesus on foot.

  76. You've heard so much about him.

  77. And this is what he says.

  78. A farmer went out to sow his seed.

  79. The seed landed in four different places,

  80. and based on the condition of the soil in each place,

  81. there was a different outcome.

  82. One of the four outcomes was good.

  83. Only one of them was the kind of outcome that the farmer hopes for.

  84. Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.

  85. What's your reaction to this?

  86. I imagine there were many people thinking,

  87. What's the point?

  88. What does this mean?

  89. Why is he telling us about this?

  90. Is there a deeper meaning to this?

  91. On its own, this teaching is kind of ambiguous.

  92. It's kind of cryptic.

  93. What are we supposed to do with this?

  94. Is there some wisdom in here that we're supposed to discover?

  95. And then there's the statement of Jesus at the end,

  96. which is rather strange.

  97. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.

  98. Don't we all have ears?

  99. Aren't we all here listening to you, Jesus?

  100. One modern translation attempts to highlight the force of the last part of Jesus' statement.

  101. It says,

  102. The one who has ears to hear had better listen.

  103. Are you saying that we're not really listening, Jesus?

  104. Are you saying that some of us don't have ears, that we're deaf?

  105. And what does all this have to do with the farmer?

  106. And the seed?

  107. And the four kinds of ground?

  108. Like, what are you talking about, Jesus?

  109. Even a closer examination of the details of Jesus' parable

  110. don't really get us much further.

  111. The farmer sows seed, and it falls on these different places.

  112. And what happens in each of these places is basically what we expect.

  113. If it falls on the path, it gets trampled on.

  114. Or the birds come and eat it.

  115. That's expected.

  116. If it falls on the rocky ground, the plant can hardly eke out its existence.

  117. It's got no depth, and so it withers.

  118. And it dies.

  119. If it falls among the weeds, well, we've all seen things trying to grow alongside the weeds,

  120. and we know how that goes.

  121. That's expected.

  122. Really, the only unexpected thing is maybe how Jesus describes the seed that falls on the good soil.

  123. He says,

  124. The plants came up and yielded a crop a hundred times what was sown.

  125. This is what every farmer dreams of and hopes for.

  126. A hundred times what was sown is the ultimate bumper crop.

  127. We're talking like a wheat yield of around 160 bushels an acre.

  128. With that kind of yield, the farmer would be hooting and hollering all the way up and down the field during harvest.

  129. So that would be great for a farmer.

  130. But what's the point?

  131. And surprisingly, Jesus didn't explain the meaning of all this to this large crowd.

  132. He just left it at that.

  133. Many of them went away wondering what on earth Jesus was talking about.

  134. Later on, Jesus' disciples asked him what the parable meant.

  135. Verse 9.

  136. His disciples asked him what this parable meant.

  137. He said,

  138. The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you.

  139. But to others, I speak in parables.

  140. So that though seeing, they may not see.

  141. Though hearing, they may not understand.

  142. From there, Jesus goes on to explain the details of the parable to them.

  143. So there was a deeper meaning to this little parable or analogy of Jesus.

  144. And we're going to get to it in just a moment.

  145. But before he explains it to them, there's this explanation of why he speaks in parables.

  146. And perhaps it's a little surprising.

  147. These particular words of Jesus have been discussed and debated thoroughly through the centuries.

  148. We'll start with the clear part.

  149. Jesus says,

  150. The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom has been given to you.

  151. The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you.

  152. So what's clear is that there are secrets.

  153. There are mysteries, as some translations put it,

  154. to the kingdom of God.

  155. But this kingdom Jesus has been proclaiming has secrets.

  156. It has elements that are hidden from plain sight.

  157. It has inner workings that are not obvious or expected.

  158. Jesus says,

  159. The knowledge of these secrets has been given to you,

  160. to his disciples.

  161. According to Mark's gospel,

  162. Jesus isn't just talking about the twelve,

  163. but to the twelve and others of his disciples.

  164. Probably it included these women as well,

  165. that we've just heard were there,

  166. and a good number of others as well.

  167. And so what is clear is that there's this sort of insiders group,

  168. and then there's an outside group.

  169. And Jesus says to the insiders group,

  170. The secrets of God's kingdom have been given to you,

  171. but not to those on the outside.

  172. And then Jesus explains the meaning of the parable to them.

  173. He goes through each element,

  174. and he tells what it represents.

  175. We'll get to that in a moment,

  176. in verses 11 to 15.

  177. In other words,

  178. when Jesus says the secrets of the kingdom of God

  179. have been given to you,

  180. what that means is that as Jesus tells these parables to the crowds,

  181. he gives the explanation of them

  182. only to his disciples,

  183. only to the insiders group,

  184. and not to everyone.

  185. And this is just one of the many parables that Jesus told.

  186. He told the parable of the mustard seed,

  187. the parable of the prodigal son,

  188. the parable of the wheat and the weeds,

  189. the parables of the hidden treasure in the field,

  190. and the pearl of great price,

  191. and many more.

  192. And Jesus, we notice,

  193. begins quite a number of those parables

  194. with this saying,

  195. this phrase.

  196. He'll say,

  197. The kingdom of God is like,

  198. and then he'll give this analogy,

  199. he'll tell a parable,

  200. where the kingdom of heaven is like,

  201. by one count,

  202. a dozen of the parables told,

  203. which begin with those words.

  204. Though some have pointed out

  205. that probably about 25 to 30 of the parables

  206. have to do with the kingdom of God.

  207. They seem to almost all be focused around this.

  208. And so Jesus is proclaiming the good news of the kingdom

  209. to the crowds,

  210. and as people ask questions,

  211. well, what's the kingdom of God like?

  212. How's it going to go?

  213. Jesus is answering those questions

  214. with a variety of parables and analogies.

  215. But,

  216. Jesus is explaining these parables

  217. and their details only to his disciples.

  218. Only to those who are traveling around with him

  219. and following him.

  220. To the twelve,

  221. and to others who are part of that inside group.

  222. The close followers of Jesus.

  223. Now, why did Jesus do it like that?

  224. Why not just explain the meaning of the parables

  225. to everyone?

  226. The details to everybody,

  227. the whole crowd.

  228. Here's where it becomes a lot less clear.

  229. Here's what Jesus says about it.

  230. He says,

  231. He quotes from the prophet Isaiah,

  232. who prophesied 700 years earlier.

  233. What does that mean?

  234. It almost sounds like Jesus is saying

  235. he uses the parables deliberately.

  236. But why?

  237. Like,

  238. are you saying that the purpose of them

  239. is to conceal

  240. or obscure the truth

  241. from people who are hearing them?

  242. It kind of sounds like that,

  243. doesn't it?

  244. To others I speak in parables

  245. so that those seeing,

  246. they may not see.

  247. Though hearing,

  248. they may not understand.

  249. So,

  250. what does that mean?

  251. Jesus,

  252. do you want them not to see?

  253. Do you want them not to understand?

  254. Don't you want them to see

  255. and to understand everything that you're saying?

  256. This apparent tension

  257. has led to all sorts

  258. of different explanations

  259. of these words of Jesus.

  260. But before we consider a few,

  261. I just want to remind us that

  262. this is a difficult passage to interpret.

  263. And there's a number of reasons why.

  264. The first reason

  265. has to do with this

  266. quoting the Old Testament prophet.

  267. Quoting Isaiah.

  268. Isaiah wrote

  269. the part that Jesus

  270. quoted 700 years prior.

  271. He starts

  272. his sentence,

  273. Jesus does,

  274. and then ends it

  275. with the quote

  276. from Isaiah.

  277. If I quote Shakespeare

  278. but you're not familiar

  279. with that quote

  280. or work

  281. of Shakespeare

  282. then it's not going to make sense.

  283. And it's the same with this.

  284. So we flip back

  285. to Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  286. to try to understand

  287. what Jesus means.

  288. But then once we

  289. get to it,

  290. we realize that Isaiah 6

  291. is itself

  292. a difficult passage

  293. to understand.

  294. The prophet Isaiah

  295. who lived during the reign

  296. of King Uzziah

  297. had a spectacular vision

  298. from God.

  299. He saw the Lord

  300. high and exalted

  301. seated on a throne.

  302. and he saw

  303. these strange

  304. looking angel

  305. things

  306. worshiping God

  307. and there was smoke

  308. in the vision

  309. and the ground shook

  310. in the vision.

  311. And Isaiah

  312. is in the presence

  313. of God

  314. and he's crying out

  315. sensing that he's

  316. about to be

  317. destroyed

  318. because he's

  319. a guilty sinner

  320. in the presence

  321. of a holy

  322. and perfect God.

  323. But then

  324. in the vision

  325. God takes his guilt

  326. away

  327. and makes atonement

  328. for him

  329. and then sends

  330. Isaiah

  331. to speak on his

  332. behalf

  333. to the people

  334. of Israel.

  335. It's like a

  336. commissioning of Isaiah

  337. to be a prophet.

  338. But what God

  339. says to Isaiah

  340. in this commissioning

  341. is

  342. maybe unexpected.

  343. He said

  344. go and tell

  345. this people

  346. be ever hearing

  347. but never

  348. understanding

  349. be ever seeing

  350. but never perceiving

  351. make the heart

  352. of this people

  353. calloused

  354. make their ears

  355. dull

  356. and close their eyes

  357. otherwise

  358. they might see

  359. with their eyes

  360. hear with their ears

  361. understand

  362. with their hearts

  363. and turn

  364. and be healed.

  365. Then I said

  366. for how long

  367. Lord?

  368. And he answered

  369. until the cities

  370. lie ruined

  371. and without

  372. inhabitant

  373. until the houses

  374. are left deserted

  375. and the fields

  376. ruined and ravaged

  377. until the Lord

  378. has sent everyone

  379. far away

  380. and the land

  381. is utterly

  382. forsaken.

  383. Do you see

  384. what I mean?

  385. Isaiah chapter 6

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  386. is a difficult

  387. passage to understand.

  388. He's sending

  389. Isaiah

  390. God is

  391. but it sounds

  392. here with

  393. Isaiah

  394. like God's

  395. purpose

  396. is not

  397. to call

  398. them

  399. to repent

  400. and be

  401. saved

  402. but rather

  403. to bring

  404. about

  405. punishment

  406. on them

  407. for their

  408. sins.

  409. It seems

  410. as if

  411. God is

  412. telling

  413. Isaiah

  414. right from

  415. the get

  416. go

  417. that people

  418. will not

  419. respond

  420. favorably

  421. to his

  422. words.

  423. And we're

  424. still left

  425. with the

  426. question

  427. of what's

  428. meant

  429. by this

  430. statement

  431. go and

  432. tell

  433. this people

  434. be ever

  435. hearing

  436. but never

  437. understanding.

  438. Be ever

  439. seeing

  440. but never

  441. perceiving.

  442. Is God

  443. pronouncing

  444. judgment

  445. on Israel

  446. here?

  447. Is this

  448. punishment?

  449. Is it

  450. that they're

  451. kind of

  452. left to a

  453. sort of

  454. spiritual

  455. blindness

  456. and deafness?

  457. Is God

  458. giving them

  459. over to

  460. hardness

  461. of heart

  462. and blindness

  463. with these

  464. words?

  465. Or

  466. you could

  467. almost take

  468. it the

  469. complete

  470. opposite way

  471. too.

  472. Is God

  473. goading

  474. them

  475. with these

  476. words?

  477. Is he

  478. trying to

  479. provoke

  480. a response

  481. from their

  482. dull hearts?

  483. Is he

  484. trying to

  485. get them

  486. to see

  487. that they

  488. think

  489. they're

  490. wise

  491. and

  492. understanding

  493. but in

  494. fact they

  495. aren't?

  496. Is God's

  497. aim with

  498. these words

  499. really

  500. stated there

  501. in the

  502. passage

  503. that they

  504. might turn

  505. to him

  506. and be

  507. healed?

  508. Or is

  509. God

  510. mainly just

  511. expressing

  512. to Isaiah

  513. what he

  514. knows

  515. what will

  516. happen?

  517. what he

  518. knows

  519. will be

  520. their

  521. response?

  522. Not

  523. that he

  524. wants

  525. them

  526. to

  527. ignore

  528. and

  529. become

  530. callous

  531. but that

  532. God

  533. knows

  534. that as

  535. Isaiah

  536. preaches

  537. to them

  538. this is

  539. going to

  540. be the

  541. result.

  542. They're

  543. going to

  544. harden

  545. their

  546. hearts

  547. until

  548. the

  549. heart's

  550. calloused.

  551. They're

  552. going to

  553. tune him

  554. out with

  555. their ears

  556. until

  557. their ears

  558. are dull

  559. and unable

  560. to hear

  561. his voice.

  562. And then

  563. there's the

  564. question of

  565. when this

  566. will happen.

  567. how long

  568. is this

  569. to go

  570. on for?

  571. Verses

  572. 11 to

  573. 13 of

  574. Isaiah

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  575. chapter 6.

  576. Is

  577. Isaiah

  578. saying that

  579. the Jewish

  580. people,

  581. the nation

  582. of Israel

  583. will be

  584. deaf and

  585. blind to

  586. the word

  587. of God

  588. until

  589. Jerusalem

  590. is destroyed

  591. and the

  592. Jews

  593. scattered

  594. in the

  595. first and

  596. second

  597. century?

  598. You see

  599. what I

  600. mean about

  601. this passage

  602. being difficult

  603. to understand?

  604. And so

  605. it's quite

  606. reasonable that

  607. there's different

  608. opinions on

  609. what these

  610. words of

  611. Jesus mean.

  612. One idea

  613. is that

  614. Jesus speaks

  615. in parables

  616. as a form

  617. of divine

  618. judgment.

  619. Deliberately

  620. concealing the

  621. truth from

  622. the people

  623. so that the

  624. people of

  625. Israel will

  626. get what

  627. they deserve

  628. for their

  629. wicked

  630. stubbornness

  631. toward God.

  632. And yet

  633. at the same

  634. time though

  635. that there's

  636. this remnant

  637. that God

  638. has chosen

  639. by grace

  640. and by his

  641. mercy and

  642. granted

  643. understanding

  644. to them

  645. so that

  646. not all

  647. will perish.

  648. Another idea

  649. is that

  650. Jesus simply

  651. is focused

  652. on explaining

  653. how their

  654. response to

  655. his preaching

  656. is the same

  657. as the

  658. people's

  659. response to

  660. Isaiah long

  661. ago.

  662. God would

  663. rather they

  664. repent and

  665. turn and be

  666. saved but

  667. because of the

  668. already hard

  669. hearts of the

  670. majority they

  671. will hear and

  672. see wonderful

  673. things from

  674. Jesus yet

  675. many will

  676. never understand

  677. or believe

  678. or turn back

  679. to God and

  680. be saved.

  681. Some even

  682. suggest that

  683. these parables

  684. have a sort

  685. of dual

  686. effect.

  687. In their

  688. outside form

  689. they have

  690. kind of the

  691. function of

  692. a veil

  693. and they

  694. cover the

  695. truth that's

  696. inside.

  697. They only

  698. reveal enough

  699. to invite

  700. and to

  701. provoke

  702. people to

  703. draw near

  704. to come

  705. to God

  706. to come

  707. to Jesus

  708. for more

  709. and then

  710. whether people

  711. press in

  712. and come

  713. to Jesus

  714. and ask

  715. what does

  716. it mean

  717. is the

  718. thing that

  719. determines

  720. whether or

  721. not they

  722. will receive

  723. the secrets

  724. of the

  725. kingdom.

  726. It's sort

  727. of a litmus

  728. test about

  729. what's really

  730. in the heart

  731. of a person.

  732. Do they

  733. really want

  734. to understand

  735. God's

  736. kingdom?

  737. And if so

  738. they will

  739. draw near

  740. to Jesus

  741. they will

  742. follow him

  743. they'll

  744. become one

  745. of the

  746. inside

  747. group

  748. but if

  749. not they'll

  750. just listen

  751. and go

  752. their way

  753. and ignore

  754. the teachings

  755. of Jesus.

  756. These are

  757. some of the

  758. ideas Christians

  759. have had about

  760. these words

  761. of Jesus

  762. and what

  763. they mean

  764. but let's

  765. just now

  766. focus on

  767. the parable

  768. of the

  769. farmer.

  770. Back to

  771. the parable

  772. of the

  773. farmer.

  774. One of

  775. the wonderful

  776. things here

  777. is that

  778. Luke takes

  779. us to

  780. the insider

  781. group's

  782. meeting

  783. where Jesus

  784. explained the

  785. details.

  786. We get

  787. the details

  788. so let's

  789. look at that

  790. in verses

  791. 11 to

  792. 15.

  793. Jesus

  794. goes back

  795. over the

  796. parable

  797. with them

  798. in private

  799. and he

  800. starts by

  801. explaining

  802. the overall

  803. elements.

  804. This is

  805. the meaning

  806. of the

  807. parable.

  808. The seed

  809. is the

  810. word of

  811. God.

  812. Those

  813. along the

  814. path are

  815. the ones

  816. who hear

  817. and then

  818. the devil

  819. comes and

  820. takes away

  821. the word

  822. from their

  823. hearts.

  824. So this

  825. is a

  826. parable about

  827. people hearing

  828. the word

  829. of God.

  830. Matthew's

  831. gospel makes

  832. it especially

  833. clear.

  834. In Matthew

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  835. chapter 13

  836. Jesus says

  837. listen then to

  838. what the

  839. parable of

  840. the sower

  841. means.

  842. When anyone

  843. hears the

  844. message about

  845. the kingdom

  846. and does

  847. not understand

  848. it the

  849. evil one

  850. comes and

  851. snatches away

  852. what was

  853. sown in

  854. their hearts.

  855. So this

  856. parable is

  857. actually an

  858. explanation

  859. of why

  860. people respond

  861. the way they

  862. do to

  863. Jesus

  864. preaching.

  865. With that

  866. key now

  867. the meaning

  868. of all of

  869. it is

  870. unlocked.

  871. We can

  872. understand

  873. something of

  874. what Jesus

  875. was getting

  876. at.

  877. Now Jesus

  878. goes through

  879. each of the

  880. four places

  881. that the

  882. seed fell

  883. and each

  884. one represents

  885. the word

  886. of God

  887. that Jesus

  888. is proclaiming

  889. being heard

  890. by people.

  891. Suddenly

  892. what Jesus

  893. said at the

  894. end makes

  895. sense.

  896. He who has

  897. ears to hear

  898. let him hear.

  899. This whole

  900. parable is

  901. about hearing

  902. the word

  903. of God

  904. which Jesus

  905. has been

  906. speaking.

  907. So let's

  908. go through

  909. each of

  910. these four

  911. places

  912. and see

  913. how Jesus

  914. explains them.

  915. First there's

  916. the seed

  917. that fell

  918. on the

  919. path

  920. and was

  921. trampled

  922. or eaten

  923. by birds.

  924. Jesus

  925. says this

  926. represents

  927. those who

  928. hear the

  929. word of

  930. God

  931. but then

  932. the devil

  933. takes away

  934. or snatches

  935. the word

  936. from their

  937. hearts

  938. so that

  939. they may

  940. not believe

  941. and be

  942. saved.

  943. That's a

  944. pretty sobering

  945. thought

  946. isn't it?

  947. In other

  948. words

  949. some people

  950. are responding

  951. to Jesus

  952. the way

  953. that they

  954. are

  955. because

  956. Satan

  957. the devil

  958. is at

  959. work.

  960. He is

  961. influencing

  962. them.

  963. Personally

  964. I find

  965. the word

  966. choice

  967. of Jesus

  968. rather

  969. shocking

  970. here.

  971. The devil

  972. comes and

  973. takes away

  974. the word

  975. from their

  976. hearts

  977. so that

  978. they may

  979. not believe

  980. and be

  981. saved.

  982. Can the

  983. devil mess

  984. with a

  985. person's

  986. heart?

  987. Can he

  988. steal

  989. from that

  990. deepest

  991. part of

  992. a person

  993. the truth

  994. that they've

  995. heard?

  996. According to

  997. Jesus

  998. the answer

  999. is yes.

  1000. And his

  1001. purpose in

  1002. doing it

  1003. is so

  1004. wicked

  1005. so that

  1006. they might

  1007. not believe

  1008. and be

  1009. saved.

  1010. How evil.

  1011. The devil

  1012. hates God

  1013. and he

  1014. doesn't

  1015. want

  1016. anyone

  1017. to

  1018. believe

  1019. in

  1020. him.

  1021. He

  1022. wants

  1023. you

  1024. to

  1025. perish.

  1026. Now

  1027. we might

  1028. wonder

  1029. how the

  1030. devil

  1031. does

  1032. this

  1033. and we

  1034. could

  1035. talk

  1036. a little

  1037. bit

  1038. about

  1039. that.

  1040. We

  1041. know

  1042. from

  1043. other

  1044. places

  1045. that

  1046. his

  1047. main

  1048. way

  1049. of

  1050. operating

  1051. is

  1052. through

  1053. deception.

  1054. Jesus

  1055. called

  1056. him

  1057. a liar

  1058. and the

  1059. father

  1060. of

  1061. lies.

  1062. Jesus

  1063. said

  1064. that

  1065. when he

  1066. lies

  1067. he

  1068. speaks

  1069. his

  1070. native

  1071. language.

  1072. That's

  1073. in

  1074. John

    John 8:44

  1075. chapter 8

  1076. verse

  1077. 44.

  1078. And it's

  1079. not

  1080. like the

  1081. TV shows

  1082. where he

  1083. sits on

  1084. your

  1085. shoulder

  1086. and

  1087. whispers

  1088. lies

  1089. into

  1090. your

  1091. ear.

  1092. He's

  1093. not

  1094. everywhere

  1095. at

  1096. once

  1097. but he

  1098. is

  1099. deeply

  1100. responsible

  1101. for

  1102. creating

  1103. and

  1104. circulating

  1105. insidious

  1106. deceptions

  1107. in our

  1108. world.

  1109. Mix

  1110. enough

  1111. truth

  1112. with a

  1113. lie

  1114. and make

  1115. the lie

  1116. coherent

  1117. with other

  1118. lies

  1119. and

  1120. you

  1121. can

  1122. explain

  1123. all

  1124. sorts

  1125. of

  1126. things

  1127. without

  1128. the

  1129. need

  1130. for

  1131. God

  1132. or

  1133. Jesus.

  1134. He

  1135. doesn't

  1136. want

  1137. you

  1138. to

  1139. believe

  1140. in

  1141. Jesus.

  1142. He

  1143. doesn't

  1144. want

  1145. you

  1146. to be

  1147. saved.

  1148. And so

  1149. as far

  1150. as it

  1151. depends

  1152. on us

  1153. we need

  1154. to do

  1155. everything

  1156. we can

  1157. to receive

  1158. the word

  1159. of God

  1160. the words

  1161. of Jesus

  1162. deeply

  1163. into our

  1164. hearts.

  1165. we

  1166. can't

  1167. just

  1168. let

  1169. the

  1170. words

  1171. come

  1172. at

  1173. us

  1174. and

  1175. sit

  1176. up

  1177. on

  1178. the

  1179. surface.

  1180. We need

  1181. to take

  1182. it

  1183. in

  1184. deeply.

  1185. We need

  1186. to do

  1187. everything

  1188. we can

  1189. to soften

  1190. our hearts

  1191. towards

  1192. God

  1193. and

  1194. his

  1195. word.

  1196. Otherwise

  1197. we give

  1198. opportunity

  1199. to the

  1200. devil

  1201. to snatch

  1202. away

  1203. the truth

  1204. that we've

  1205. heard.

  1206. Next

  1207. there's the

  1208. seed that

  1209. fell on

  1210. the rocky

  1211. ground.

  1212. and

  1213. we

  1214. notice

  1215. that

  1216. these

  1217. are

  1218. people

  1219. who

  1220. receive

  1221. the

  1222. word

  1223. with

  1224. joy

  1225. when

  1226. they

  1227. hear

  1228. it.

  1229. The

  1230. good

  1231. news

  1232. of

  1233. Jesus

  1234. sounds

  1235. and

  1236. feels

  1237. like

  1238. good

  1239. news

  1240. to

  1241. them.

  1242. They

  1243. accept

  1244. it

  1245. but

  1246. not

  1247. deeply.

  1248. It's

  1249. still a

  1250. rather

  1251. shallow

  1252. and

  1253. surface

  1254. kind

  1255. of

  1256. belief.

  1257. They

  1258. have

  1259. no

  1260. root.

  1261. The

  1262. roots

  1263. can't

  1264. go

  1265. down

  1266. because

  1267. of the

  1268. rocks.

  1269. the

  1270. word

  1271. doesn't

  1272. go

  1273. deep

  1274. into

  1275. their

  1276. hearts.

  1277. They

  1278. believe

  1279. for a

  1280. while

  1281. says

  1282. Jesus

  1283. but

  1284. in

  1285. the

  1286. time

  1287. of

  1288. testing

  1289. they

  1290. fall

  1291. away.

  1292. Right

  1293. now

  1294. the

  1295. crowds

  1296. are

  1297. large

  1298. for

  1299. Jesus

  1300. but

  1301. the

  1302. size

  1303. of

  1304. the

  1305. crowds

  1306. doesn't

  1307. mean

  1308. that

  1309. all

  1310. of

  1311. them

  1312. really

  1313. believe

  1314. in

  1315. Jesus.

  1316. When

  1317. it

  1318. becomes

  1319. difficult

  1320. to be

  1321. a

  1322. follower

  1323. of

  1324. Jesus

  1325. later

  1326. on

  1327. in

  1328. the

  1329. story

  1330. and

  1331. the

  1332. opposition

  1333. intensifies

  1334. many

  1335. will

  1336. disappear

  1337. and

  1338. no

  1339. longer

  1340. follow

  1341. him

  1342. they

  1343. will

  1344. fall

  1345. away.

  1346. This

  1347. is the

  1348. story

  1349. for

  1350. many

  1351. in

  1352. every

  1353. generation.

  1354. They

  1355. grow up

  1356. going to

  1357. church

  1358. with

  1359. their

  1360. parents

  1361. and

  1362. for

  1363. many

  1364. years

  1365. that's

  1366. all

  1367. they

  1368. know.

  1369. It's

  1370. just

  1371. what

  1372. they

  1373. do.

  1374. But

  1375. then

  1376. when

  1377. it

  1378. becomes

  1379. apparent

  1380. that

  1381. there's

  1382. a

  1383. cost

  1384. to

  1385. following

  1386. Jesus

  1387. that

  1388. it

  1389. requires

  1390. personal

  1391. sacrifice

  1392. and

  1393. commitment

  1394. or

  1395. when

  1396. it

  1397. becomes

  1398. unpopular

  1399. to

  1400. follow

  1401. Jesus

  1402. they

  1403. fall

  1404. away.

  1405. They

  1406. stop

  1407. going

  1408. to

  1409. church

  1410. they

  1411. stop

  1412. doing

  1413. the

  1414. Christian

  1415. things

  1416. and

  1417. it

  1418. comes

  1419. out

  1420. that

  1421. their

  1422. faith

  1423. their

  1424. commitment

  1425. to

  1426. him

  1427. was

  1428. shallow

  1429. from

  1430. the

  1431. start.

  1432. Next

  1433. there is

  1434. the

  1435. seed

  1436. that

  1437. among

  1438. the

  1439. thorns

  1440. or

  1441. the

  1442. weeds.

  1443. Jesus

  1444. says

  1445. that

  1446. this

  1447. stands

  1448. for

  1449. those

  1450. who

  1451. hear

  1452. but

  1453. then

  1454. are

  1455. choked

  1456. by

  1457. life's

  1458. worries

  1459. riches

  1460. and

  1461. pleasures

  1462. and

  1463. they

  1464. do

  1465. not

  1466. mature.

  1467. So

  1468. they

  1469. hear

  1470. God's

  1471. word

  1472. maybe

  1473. even

  1474. make

  1475. a

  1476. profession

  1477. of

  1478. faith

  1479. in

  1480. Jesus

  1481. but

  1482. ultimately

  1483. they

  1484. do

  1485. not

  1486. respond

  1487. to

  1488. God's

  1489. word.

  1490. It's

  1491. choked

  1492. out.

  1493. It's

  1494. crowded

  1495. out

  1496. in their

  1497. hearts

  1498. and

  1499. in

  1500. their

  1501. lives

  1502. by

  1503. a

  1504. number

  1505. of

  1506. things.

  1507. Life's

  1508. worries.

  1509. Riches.

  1510. The

  1511. pursuit

  1512. of

  1513. material

  1514. things.

  1515. Pleasures.

  1516. Chasing

  1517. after

  1518. pleasures.

  1519. Feelings.

  1520. Entertainment.

  1521. They're

  1522. not

  1523. able to

  1524. respond

  1525. to

  1526. God's

  1527. words

  1528. deeply

  1529. because

  1530. even

  1531. though

  1532. they've

  1533. heard

  1534. it

  1535. there's

  1536. other

  1537. things

  1538. that

  1539. they're

  1540. giving

  1541. the

  1542. attention

  1543. of

  1544. their

  1545. heart

  1546. to

  1547. more.

  1548. Are

  1549. you

  1550. worried

  1551. about

  1552. a lot

  1553. of

  1554. things

  1555. in

  1556. life?

  1557. According

  1558. to

  1559. Jesus

  1560. worrying

  1561. about

  1562. things

  1563. in

  1564. life

  1565. can

  1566. affect

  1567. your

  1568. hearing.

  1569. Worrying

  1570. can

  1571. hinder

  1572. your

  1573. ability

  1574. to

  1575. hear

  1576. and

  1577. respond

  1578. to

  1579. the

  1580. word

  1581. of

  1582. God.

  1583. Or

  1584. are

  1585. you

  1586. constantly

  1587. thinking

  1588. about

  1589. how

  1590. much

  1591. money

  1592. you

  1593. have?

  1594. Or

  1595. the

  1596. next

  1597. thing

  1598. that

  1599. you'd

  1600. like

  1601. to

  1602. obtain

  1603. or

  1604. buy?

  1605. This

  1606. is

  1607. another

  1608. thing

  1609. that

  1610. can

  1611. affect

  1612. our

  1613. hearing.

  1614. The

  1615. pursuit

  1616. of

  1617. riches,

  1618. wealth,

  1619. material

  1620. things.

  1621. Or

  1622. is

  1623. it

  1624. pleasure?

  1625. Could

  1626. be

  1627. even

  1628. as

  1629. simple

  1630. as

  1631. being

  1632. addicted

  1633. to

  1634. our

  1635. phones.

  1636. habitually

  1637. scrolling

  1638. on a

  1639. device,

  1640. an

  1641. excess

  1642. of

  1643. movies

  1644. or

  1645. games

  1646. or

  1647. sports

  1648. or

  1649. social

  1650. media.

  1651. Or

  1652. it

  1653. could be

  1654. something

  1655. bigger

  1656. like

  1657. the

  1658. next

  1659. great

  1660. experience

  1661. that

  1662. we're

  1663. hoping

  1664. for,

  1665. the

  1666. next

  1667. luxury

  1668. getaway

  1669. or a

  1670. new

  1671. romantic

  1672. relationship.

  1673. And

  1674. God

  1675. has

  1676. made

  1677. this

  1678. life

  1679. and

  1680. this

  1681. world

  1682. with

  1683. pleasures,

  1684. things

  1685. for our

  1686. enjoyment.

  1687. But

  1688. the

  1689. problem

  1690. happens

  1691. when we

  1692. turn our

  1693. hearts

  1694. primarily

  1695. towards

  1696. getting

  1697. those

  1698. pleasures,

  1699. !

  1700. That's

  1701. the

  1702. main

  1703. thing

  1704. for us.

  1705. And

  1706. it

  1707. can

  1708. affect

  1709. our

  1710. ability

  1711. to hear

  1712. the

  1713. word

  1714. of

  1715. God

  1716. and

  1717. to

  1718. have

  1719. the

  1720. word

  1721. of

  1722. God

  1723. have

  1724. its

  1725. intended

  1726. result

  1727. in

  1728. our

  1729. life.

  1730. Finally,

  1731. !

  1732. There's

  1733. the seed

  1734. that fell

  1735. on the

  1736. good

  1737. soil

  1738. and

  1739. produced

  1740. the

  1741. ultimate

  1742. bumper

  1743. crop.

  1744. Jesus

  1745. says the

  1746. least

  1747. about

  1748. what this

  1749. looks like

  1750. in the

  1751. life of

  1752. a

  1753. person,

  1754. but

  1755. we

  1756. notice

  1757. just a

  1758. few

  1759. details.

  1760. We

  1761. notice

  1762. that

  1763. the

  1764. word

  1765. of

  1766. God

  1767. is

  1768. retained.

  1769. There are

  1770. those who

  1771. hear the

  1772. word,

  1773. retain it,

  1774. and by

  1775. persevering,

  1776. produce a

  1777. crop.

  1778. That

  1779. word

  1780. persevering

  1781. catches my

  1782. attention.

  1783. God's

  1784. word can

  1785. do great

  1786. things in

  1787. a person's

  1788. life,

  1789. but that

  1790. doesn't mean

  1791. it's going

  1792. to be

  1793. automatic,

  1794. instant,

  1795. or easy.

  1796. it requires

  1797. that we

  1798. stick with

  1799. the words

  1800. of Jesus.

  1801. It requires

  1802. that we

  1803. hear them

  1804. and go

  1805. on through

  1806. our lives

  1807. holding

  1808. on to

  1809. them

  1810. deeply

  1811. as

  1812. true.

  1813. But if

  1814. we do,

  1815. it leads

  1816. to the

  1817. most amazing

  1818. outcome,

  1819. the great

  1820. bumper crop,

  1821. which,

  1822. if we

  1823. translate the

  1824. metaphor,

  1825. salvation,

  1826. life as a

  1827. citizen in

  1828. God's

  1829. kingdom,

  1830. which is

  1831. coming.

  1832. And so

  1833. this is one

  1834. of the

  1835. first secrets

  1836. of the

  1837. kingdom.

  1838. Not

  1839. everyone,

  1840. sadly,

  1841. will enter

  1842. into it.

  1843. Many will

  1844. hear about

  1845. it,

  1846. or at least

  1847. hear about

  1848. the king

  1849. of this

  1850. kingdom,

  1851. and yet

  1852. only some

  1853. will end

  1854. up with

  1855. the good

  1856. outcome.

  1857. And it

  1858. comes down

  1859. to what

  1860. happens when

  1861. we hear

  1862. the word

  1863. of God,

  1864. the message

  1865. of Jesus.

  1866. Jesus.

  1867. It's not

  1868. enough to

  1869. just hear

  1870. it,

  1871. we must

  1872. believe it.

  1873. And it's

  1874. not enough

  1875. to believe

  1876. it in a

  1877. surface way,

  1878. to just

  1879. agree with

  1880. it,

  1881. or think it

  1882. sounds pretty

  1883. good,

  1884. we must

  1885. believe it

  1886. in the

  1887. deepest

  1888. depths of

  1889. our hearts.

  1890. We must

  1891. take Jesus'

  1892. words as

  1893. truth,

  1894. as the

  1895. very words

  1896. of God

  1897. to us.

  1898. and it's

  1899. not enough

  1900. to add

  1901. Jesus'

  1902. words to

  1903. the

  1904. collection

  1905. of all

  1906. the

  1907. other

  1908. things

  1909. that we

  1910. value,

  1911. but you

  1912. know,

  1913. kind of

  1914. keep it

  1915. on the

  1916. side while

  1917. we go

  1918. after all

  1919. these

  1920. things.

  1921. We must

  1922. value the

  1923. word of

  1924. God

  1925. as the

  1926. very word

  1927. of God

  1928. and prioritize

  1929. it above

  1930. all else

  1931. in life.

  1932. And it's

  1933. not easy

  1934. to do

  1935. this,

  1936. but the

  1937. good outcome,

  1938. the kingdom

  1939. of God

  1940. will be

  1941. found and

  1942. enjoyed

  1943. by those

  1944. who do.

  1945. Just a

  1946. brief word

  1947. on what

  1948. to do

  1949. with all

  1950. this.

  1951. You know,

  1952. the first

  1953. place of

  1954. this parable

  1955. was probably

  1956. very helpful

  1957. was no

  1958. doubt for

  1959. the disciples.

  1960. Think of

  1961. how they

  1962. followed

  1963. Jesus in

  1964. their own

  1965. day and

  1966. time,

  1967. and they

  1968. watched the

  1969. crowd

  1970. swarming

  1971. Jesus,

  1972. and everybody

  1973. is excited

  1974. about him.

  1975. Surely

  1976. they wondered

  1977. though,

  1978. why all of

  1979. a sudden

  1980. some people

  1981. just stopped

  1982. following.

  1983. And then

  1984. as it

  1985. gets closer

  1986. to Jesus'

  1987. death,

  1988. the crowds

  1989. are getting

  1990. really thin.

  1991. Maybe

  1992. even at

  1993. times they

  1994. felt discouraged

  1995. and had

  1996. doubts and

  1997. were even

  1998. tempted to

  1999. give up on

  2000. Jesus as

  2001. they saw

  2002. where this

  2003. was going.

  2004. And so

  2005. this, I

  2006. think,

  2007. was encouragement

  2008. for them

  2009. to understand

  2010. what's going

  2011. on.

  2012. It was

  2013. encouragement

  2014. for them

  2015. to persevere

  2016. and hold

  2017. on tightly

  2018. to the

  2019. word that

  2020. Jesus was

  2021. saying,

  2022. even with

  2023. the opposition.

  2024. But I

  2025. think we

  2026. can find

  2027. wisdom

  2028. and insight

  2029. in these

  2030. words too

  2031. as we

  2032. see how

  2033. people around

  2034. us today

  2035. respond to

  2036. the good

  2037. news about

  2038. Jesus.

  2039. It helps

  2040. us at

  2041. least to

  2042. understand a

  2043. little bit

  2044. of why

  2045. so many

  2046. fall short

  2047. of becoming

  2048. full-fledged

  2049. followers of

  2050. Jesus.

  2051. Jesus.

  2052. It tells

  2053. us to

  2054. expect this

  2055. and not

  2056. to think

  2057. that there's

  2058. some kind

  2059. of problem

  2060. with the

  2061. seed or

  2062. with the

  2063. message that

  2064. we've

  2065. believed.

  2066. saved.

  2067. But I

  2068. think more

  2069. important than

  2070. all that is

  2071. just this

  2072. simple question

  2073. that this

  2074. parable leads

  2075. us to.

  2076. It's a

  2077. question I've

  2078. never been

  2079. able to get

  2080. away from.

  2081. Every time I

  2082. read this

  2083. parable I'm

  2084. reminded of

  2085. it.

  2086. And I

  2087. hope it's

  2088. the question

  2089. that you

  2090. leave with

  2091. today.

  2092. Which of

  2093. these four

  2094. soils

  2095. am I?

  2096. which of

  2097. these four

  2098. soils most

  2099. describes my

  2100. heart?

  2101. My

  2102. response to

  2103. the word of

  2104. God?

  2105. Could it

  2106. be that I've

  2107. been seeing

  2108. but not

  2109. really seeing?

  2110. That I've

  2111. been hearing

  2112. but not

  2113. really hearing

  2114. his words?

  2115. Has my

  2116. heart become

  2117. calloused

  2118. toward God

  2119. like the

  2120. path?

  2121. And my

  2122. ears dull

  2123. to his

  2124. voice?

  2125. Which of

  2126. these four

  2127. soils am I?

  2128. We may not

  2129. understand the

  2130. full purpose

  2131. and intention

  2132. of God and

  2133. all he does

  2134. and why he

  2135. uses these

  2136. parables like

  2137. this but I

  2138. hope the

  2139. reminder that

  2140. Satan does

  2141. not want us

  2142. to believe

  2143. or to be

  2144. saved.

  2145. I hope

  2146. that reminder

  2147. drives us

  2148. to Jesus

  2149. and back

  2150. to Jesus

  2151. words.

  2152. Whatever the

  2153. past has

  2154. held,

  2155. if you've

  2156. fallen away

  2157. or maybe

  2158. never really

  2159. believed and

  2160. you know it

  2161. or maybe you

  2162. have but you're

  2163. tempted to give

  2164. up on

  2165. Jesus,

  2166. know that

  2167. there is a

  2168. good outcome

  2169. for those who

  2170. persevere in

  2171. faith and

  2172. cling to the

  2173. words of

  2174. Jesus to

  2175. the end

  2176. and it's

  2177. not too

  2178. late.

  2179. Let's pray.

  2180. Father in

  2181. heaven, we

  2182. ask that you

  2183. would go to

  2184. work in our

  2185. hearts by your

  2186. spirit.

  2187. Lord, convict

  2188. us.

  2189. We need that.

  2190. Speak the

  2191. truth to our

  2192. hearts.

  2193. Help us see

  2194. which soil

  2195. we are,

  2196. which soil

  2197. we've been

  2198. this past

  2199. week.

  2200. Call us

  2201. and draw us

  2202. near to

  2203. yourself.

  2204. We want

  2205. to be

  2206. that good

  2207. soil.

  2208. We want

  2209. to know

  2210. the joy

  2211. of that

  2212. bumper crop

  2213. in our

  2214. lives.

  2215. Pray this

  2216. in Jesus'

  2217. name.

  2218. Amen.
