  1. Well, this morning as we come to the Word of God, we're back in the Gospel of Luke, continuing on with the story of Jesus.

  2. Last time, we heard Jesus tell the parable of the sower and the soils.

  3. It was a parable about how people have different responses to the Word of God that Jesus has been speaking.

  4. And why?

  5. Well, after telling that parable, Jesus had more to say.

  6. He continues on.

  7. And so, we're going to listen to what Jesus has to say in Luke chapter 8, verse 16.

    Luke 8:16

  8. Luke chapter 8, verse 16.

    Luke 8:16

  9. No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed.

  10. Instead, they put it on a stand so that those who come in can see the light.

  11. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

  12. Therefore, consider carefully how you listen.

  13. Whoever has will be given more.

  14. Whoever does not have, even what they think they have, will be taken from them.

  15. Now, these words of Jesus aren't easy to understand.

  16. Jesus uses an analogy of lamp and light.

  17. But what does he mean by it?

  18. Jesus uses proverbial language.

  19. Verse 17 and verse 18 sound like they could be right out of the book of Proverbs.

  20. In order to understand what Jesus means, we have to understand what the elements of this analogy relate to.

  21. We have to understand how the proverbial truth applies to what Jesus is talking about.

  22. And as we hear these words of Jesus, for many of us are probably thinking,

  23. these things sound really familiar.

  24. And that's maybe because Jesus says these same things on more than one occasion.

  25. And he applies each of these three sayings in each of these three verses in different ways on different occasions.

  26. If we flip ahead just a few chapters to Luke chapter 11, verse 33,

    Luke 11:33

  27. we notice Jesus says the same thing.

  28. He says,

  29. No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden or under a bowl.

  30. Instead, they put it on its stand so that those who come in may see the light.

  31. But there in Luke chapter 11, as he continues on,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  32. he says this, he says,

  33. Your eye is the lamp of your body.

  34. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light.

  35. Jesus goes in a totally different direction than he did here in Luke chapter 8.

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  36. The analogy relates differently to what he says.

  37. Or we could look at this thing Jesus says in chapter 8, verse 17,

  38. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed,

  39. and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

  40. Jesus says the same thing later in Luke chapter 12, verse 2.

    Luke 12:2

  41. There he says,

  42. Be on guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  43. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed,

  44. or hidden that will not be made known.

  45. He goes on in that chapter, chapter 12, to say,

  46. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight,

  47. and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

  48. Again, we see Jesus use the same words, the same sort of proverb,

  49. but go in a totally different direction with it.

  50. Instead of applying it to the light of a lamp and exposing what is hidden,

  51. he applies it to the hidden hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

  52. So that's what makes these words of Jesus kind of hard to understand.

  53. We wonder, what is he talking about?

  54. What does the lamp and the light represent?

  55. What does hiding that lamp under the bed represent?

  56. Many of us look to Matthew's gospel for an understanding of these words.

  57. Matthew 5, verse 14 and 16.

    Matthew 5:14

  58. Jesus uses the same language there.

  59. He says,

  60. You are the light of the world.

  61. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

  62. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.

  63. Instead, they put it on its stand,

  64. and it gives light to everyone in the house.

  65. In the same way,

  66. let your light shine before others,

  67. that they may see your good deeds

  68. and glorify your Father in heaven.

  69. It's a familiar and wonderful and true saying of Jesus.

  70. And so many think,

  71. this must be what Jesus is talking about

  72. when he uses the same language in Luke's gospel

  73. about putting a lamp on the lampstand.

  74. No one lights a lamp

  75. and hides it in a clay jar

  76. or puts it under a bed.

  77. Instead, they put it on a stand

  78. so that those who come in can see the light.

  79. For there is nothing hidden

  80. that will not be disclosed

  81. and nothing concealed

  82. that will not be known

  83. or brought out into the open.

  84. Therefore, consider carefully how you listen.

  85. Whoever has will be given more.

  86. Whoever does not have,

  87. even what they think they have,

  88. will be taken from them.

  89. Many interpret these words

  90. as sort of dovetailing in

  91. with what we just read from Matthew's gospel.

  92. And according to this way of reading it,

  93. this passage is about sharing the light of Jesus

  94. with others around us,

  95. letting them see our faith in public

  96. rather than hiding it in private.

  97. Let your lamp shine out brightly

  98. and your faith in Jesus

  99. be known publicly

  100. since all that is hidden now

  101. will eventually be known

  102. and public anyway.

  103. Verse 18 may mean then

  104. that we ought to listen carefully

  105. to God's word that we've received

  106. and act on it

  107. because those who do

  108. will be blessed or rewarded

  109. while those who do not

  110. will lose in the end.

  111. That may well be the right way

  112. to understand these words,

  113. but there's some things

  114. in Luke's gospel here

  115. that make me wonder.

  116. Here in Luke's gospel,

  117. I notice that Jesus doesn't start off

  118. by saying,

  119. you are the light of the world.

  120. Neither does he follow

  121. this lamp analogy up with

  122. in the same way,

  123. let your light shine

  124. before others.

  125. The thing he implores us to do,

  126. rather,

  127. is to consider carefully

  128. how we listen.

  129. And that has to do

  130. with what Jesus

  131. has just been explaining

  132. to his disciples

  133. with this parable of the sower

  134. and the seed

  135. and the soils.

  136. It was all about hearing

  137. and responding

  138. to the word of God.

  139. If this teaching of Jesus here

  140. is all about us

  141. shining the light

  142. and telling others

  143. about Jesus,

  144. then why does Jesus

  145. tell us as the main point

  146. to consider carefully

  147. how we listen?

  148. Why does he follow this up

  149. with a warning

  150. that for some,

  151. even what they think

  152. they have

  153. will be taken away?

  154. There's another way

  155. that Christians

  156. have understood

  157. these words

  158. in Luke.

  159. And it's not

  160. what Jesus said

  161. in the Sermon on the Mount

  162. about letting our light shine.

  163. That's true.

  164. That's absolutely true.

  165. But maybe Jesus

  166. is in a different occasion here

  167. using the same Proverbs

  168. to make a different point.

  169. If we look back

  170. to chapter 8,

  171. verses 9 and 10

  172. for a moment,

  173. remember Jesus

  174. is talking to his disciples.

  175. They're asking about

  176. the meaning of the parable

  177. of the soils.

  178. What does that mean?

  179. And Jesus said to them,

  180. Well, the knowledge

  181. of the secrets

  182. of the kingdom of God

  183. has been given to you.

  184. But to others

  185. I speak in parables

  186. so that though seeing

  187. they may not see,

  188. though hearing

  189. they may not understand.

  190. So the context here

  191. is Jesus explaining

  192. this parable of the sower

  193. to his disciples

  194. and why he uses parables.

  195. And as we look

  196. at that explanation,

  197. what is hidden?

  198. What is it that's hidden?

  199. Well, it's the knowledge

  200. of the secrets

  201. of the kingdom.

  202. We talked about that

  203. a couple weeks ago.

  204. There are hidden truths

  205. about God's purposes,

  206. about the kingdom of God.

  207. And these are the things

  208. that Jesus is teaching.

  209. He's doing it

  210. in parable form,

  211. but then explaining

  212. in private

  213. to his disciples

  214. what these parables mean.

  215. So you can probably

  216. imagine the disciples

  217. wondering

  218. and asking,

  219. Why do you teach

  220. in parables?

  221. Why not just

  222. explain plainly

  223. without the parables

  224. what God has to say

  225. to everyone?

  226. Do you want people

  227. to see

  228. and understand

  229. or not?

  230. Well, it could be

  231. that verse 16

  232. is Jesus' answer

  233. to that question.

  234. No one lights a lamp

  235. and hides it

  236. in a clay jar

  237. or puts it under a bed.

  238. Instead, they put it

  239. on a stand

  240. so that those who come in

  241. can see the light.

  242. Perhaps Jesus

  243. is simply saying

  244. that the goal here

  245. is not to hide

  246. the truth from people.

  247. He has come as light

  248. into the darkness

  249. of our world.

  250. And his teaching

  251. is intended

  252. to illuminate.

  253. It's there

  254. to give knowledge

  255. and understanding.

  256. God has not

  257. sent his Son

  258. into the world

  259. as a light

  260. only to hide

  261. that light

  262. from people.

  263. That would be absurd.

  264. Just like

  265. hiding

  266. a lit lamp

  267. in a jar

  268. or putting it

  269. under a bed.

  270. Rather,

  271. God has sent

  272. Jesus

  273. as the light

  274. to shine

  275. brightly

  276. on the lamp

  277. stand

  278. so that all

  279. who come in

  280. can see the light.

  281. So that the things

  282. that are hidden

  283. may be disclosed

  284. and revealed.

  285. The secrets

  286. of the kingdom

  287. so that they might

  288. be made known

  289. and brought out

  290. into the open.

  291. And therefore,

  292. verse 18,

  293. consider carefully

  294. how you listen.

  295. Personally,

  296. I think this way

  297. of looking at it

  298. makes a little more sense.

  299. At least to me,

  300. it does.

  301. It seems to flow better.

  302. And we notice

  303. in the parable

  304. before this,

  305. the parable

  306. of the sower,

  307. the word of God

  308. was the seed

  309. which fell upon

  310. the ears

  311. and the hearts

  312. of the people.

  313. Jesus was the sower.

  314. Could this be

  315. just a different

  316. analogy to say

  317. the same thing?

  318. Jesus is the lamp

  319. that God has

  320. given

  321. to give the light

  322. of his good news

  323. to a dark world.

  324. and God's purpose

  325. in lighting the lamp,

  326. in sending Jesus

  327. is not to hide things

  328. but to reveal

  329. what is hidden.

  330. To reveal

  331. what we can't see

  332. and know

  333. without his light

  334. of truth.

  335. And therefore,

  336. it's critical

  337. that we listen

  338. to Jesus carefully,

  339. that we pay attention

  340. to his words

  341. and really hear them.

  342. It's the difference

  343. in the parable

  344. of the soils

  345. between that

  346. bumper crop harvest

  347. and getting nothing

  348. from what was sown.

  349. It's the difference

  350. in the analogy

  351. of the lamp

  352. between seeing

  353. and understanding

  354. what is hidden

  355. or continuing

  356. to grope about

  357. in the darkness

  358. blind

  359. and ignorant

  360. to God's mercy

  361. and to his kingdom.

  362. When we come

  363. to verse 18,

  364. whoever has

  365. will be given more.

  366. Whoever does not have

  367. even what they think

  368. they have

  369. will be taken

  370. from them.

  371. I can't help

  372. but see a parallel

  373. here to what

  374. Jesus shared with us

  375. in the parable

  376. of the sower

  377. and the soils.

  378. Remember,

  379. each soil type

  380. mentioned,

  381. the path,

  382. the rocky soil,

  383. the weedy soil,

  384. the good soil.

  385. Each one received

  386. the seed.

  387. Each kind of hearer

  388. had the word of God,

  389. the truth of God

  390. which comes

  391. through Jesus

  392. and yet

  393. there was that

  394. good harvest

  395. from only one

  396. kind of hearer,

  397. the good soil.

  398. Those who hear

  399. and retain

  400. and by persevering

  401. produce a crop.

  402. Well,

  403. what happens

  404. to the others

  405. in that parable?

  406. Well,

  407. this seems to

  408. describe it

  409. in a nutshell,

  410. doesn't it?

  411. Whoever

  412. has

  413. will be given more.

  414. Whoever does not

  415. have,

  416. even what they think

  417. they have

  418. will be taken

  419. from them.

  420. Either the devil

  421. comes and

  422. takes away the word

  423. from their hearts

  424. as with the seed

  425. that fell on the path

  426. or the difficulties

  427. of following Jesus

  428. come and

  429. take away

  430. what they first

  431. believed

  432. and they fall away

  433. or the worries

  434. of life,

  435. greed,

  436. the distractions

  437. of pleasures

  438. in this world

  439. come and

  440. take away

  441. what they had.

  442. they choke

  443. out the word

  444. they heard.

  445. These words,

  446. I think,

  447. are worthy

  448. of meditation.

  449. Even what

  450. they think

  451. they have

  452. will be taken

  453. from them.

  454. That's sobering.

  455. Sort of speaks

  456. of the mindset

  457. of people

  458. who don't

  459. take Jesus'

  460. words seriously.

  461. They think,

  462. perhaps,

  463. that they're

  464. okay with God.

  465. I prayed

  466. the sinner's prayer

  467. when I was a kid.

  468. Or I went up

  469. to the altar

  470. at the call

  471. of the pastor.

  472. Or I believe

  473. in Jesus,

  474. just not like

  475. the crazy

  476. fundamentalist types

  477. do.

  478. Where I go

  479. to church

  480. once in a while,

  481. it's like

  482. there's a sort

  483. of self-deception

  484. whereby people

  485. who do not

  486. have true faith

  487. in Jesus

  488. often think

  489. that they do.

  490. people who

  491. are not

  492. seen clearly

  493. by the light

  494. of Jesus'

  495. words

  496. think that

  497. they are.

  498. Even what

  499. they think

  500. they have

  501. will be

  502. taken from

  503. them.

  504. The Bible

  505. tells us

  506. that one day

  507. when Jesus

  508. returns,

  509. he will sort

  510. out the

  511. goats

  512. from the

  513. true sheep

  514. and the

  515. tares

  516. or the

  517. false wheat

  518. from the

  519. wheat,

  520. the true

  521. disciples

  522. from the

  523. imposters.

  524. One thing

  525. I think

  526. we can all

  527. agree on

  528. as we look

  529. at these

  530. words

  531. is that

  532. that's

  533. in verse

  534. 18,

  535. that imperative,

  536. therefore

  537. consider

  538. carefully

  539. how

  540. you

  541. listen,

  542. how

  543. you

  544. hear.

  545. Jesus

  546. said this

  547. to his

  548. disciples.

  549. Imagine

  550. yourself

  551. there in

  552. the room

  553. with Jesus

  554. as he

  555. said all

  556. this.

  557. imagine

  558. Jesus

  559. looking

  560. you

  561. in the

  562. eyes

  563. and

  564. saying

  565. therefore

  566. consider

  567. carefully

  568. how

  569. you

  570. hear.

  571. There

  572. is more

  573. than one

  574. way to

  575. hear

  576. or to

  577. listen

  578. to the

  579. words

  580. of God.

  581. Some

  582. of those

  583. ways

  584. are

  585. disastrous

  586. and they

  587. leave us

  588. self-deceived

  589. and wanting

  590. in the

  591. end.

  592. How

  593. seriously

  594. do you

  595. take

  596. the

  597. words

  598. of

  599. Jesus?

  600. Will

  601. you

  602. rearrange

  603. your

  604. life

  605. and

  606. your

  607. priorities

  608. if

  609. needed

  610. to hear

  611. Jesus'

  612. words

  613. and follow

  614. them?

  615. I was

  616. thinking about

  617. that analogy

  618. of the

  619. lamp

  620. and the

  621. light

  622. and hiding

  623. it

  624. and just

  625. the light

  626. that Jesus

  627. is and

  628. what came

  629. to mind

  630. was a

  631. time this

  632. week when I

  633. was in my

  634. storage room

  635. and I

  636. accidentally

  637. turned

  638. the lights

  639. went off

  640. and all

  641. of a sudden

  642. it was

  643. pitch black

  644. in there.

  645. there's

  646. no windows

  647. at all

  648. in there

  649. and I

  650. got

  651. thinking

  652. about

  653. that.

  654. When

  655. it's

  656. pitch

  657. black

  658. what do

  659. we see?

  660. What do

  661. we experience?

  662. Nothing.

  663. You can't

  664. see anything.

  665. It's just

  666. nothing.

  667. We have

  668. so much

  669. more

  670. by the

  671. light.

  672. We can

  673. see

  674. everything.

  675. All the

  676. stuff that's

  677. there.

  678. God wants

  679. us to

  680. live in

  681. the light

  682. and to

  683. enjoy his

  684. grace.

  685. And that's

  686. why he

  687. has lit

  688. a lamp.

  689. That's

  690. why he

  691. has sent

  692. his son.

  693. Not to

  694. hide the

  695. truth from

  696. us but

  697. to reveal

  698. the truth

  699. to us.

  700. But how

  701. seriously

  702. do we

  703. take the

  704. words of

  705. Jesus?

  706. Would

  707. you

  708. rearrange

  709. your life

  710. and your

  711. priorities

  712. to better

  713. hear and

  714. follow the

  715. words of

  716. Jesus?

  717. Let's

  718. continue on

  719. with

  720. verse 19.

  721. Now

  722. Jesus'

  723. mother and

  724. brothers came

  725. to see

  726. him but

  727. they were

  728. not able

  729. to get

  730. near him

  731. because of

  732. the crowd.

  733. Someone

  734. told Jesus

  735. your mother

  736. and brothers

  737. are standing

  738. outside wanting

  739. to see

  740. you.

  741. Jesus

  742. replied

  743. my mother

  744. and my

  745. brothers

  746. are those

  747. who hear

  748. God's

  749. word

  750. and put

  751. it into

  752. practice.

  753. Imagine

  754. this for a

  755. moment.

  756. You're in

  757. the house

  758. with Jesus

  759. and the

  760. house is

  761. packed

  762. solid with

  763. people.

  764. Everybody

  765. wants to

  766. get near

  767. Jesus.

  768. Everybody

  769. wants to

  770. see what

  771. he's doing

  772. or hear

  773. what he's

  774. saying.

  775. And then

  776. suddenly this

  777. man calls

  778. out,

  779. Jesus,

  780. your mother

  781. and your

  782. brothers

  783. are here.

  784. They're

  785. just

  786. outside.

  787. Who

  788. could be

  789. more

  790. important

  791. than

  792. family,

  793. right?

  794. They

  795. should have

  796. an automatic

  797. VIP seat

  798. in the

  799. house if

  800. they want

  801. it,

  802. right?

  803. What will

  804. Jesus do?

  805. Will he

  806. dismiss the

  807. whole crowd

  808. and then

  809. spend some

  810. time with

  811. them?

  812. Or will

  813. he call

  814. for those

  815. in the

  816. room to

  817. make space

  818. so that

  819. they can

  820. come in

  821. and sit?

  822. Jesus'

  823. response in

  824. this moment

  825. is surprising.

  826. He replies

  827. with this,

  828. my mother

  829. and my

  830. brothers are

  831. those who

  832. hear God's

  833. word and

  834. put it into

  835. practice.

  836. He turns it

  837. into a

  838. teaching moment

  839. and we

  840. never find

  841. out from

  842. Luke whether

  843. Jesus'

  844. mother and

  845. brothers end

  846. up getting

  847. to see him

  848. on this

  849. occasion.

  850. But there's

  851. one piece

  852. of context

  853. here that

  854. might shed

  855. some light

  856. on this.

  857. If we

  858. look at

  859. Mark,

  860. a parallel

  861. account,

  862. chapter 3,

  863. verse 20,

  864. the following,

  865. then Jesus

  866. entered a

  867. house and

  868. again a

  869. crowd gathered

  870. so that

  871. he and

  872. his disciples

  873. were not

  874. even able

  875. to eat.

  876. When his

  877. family heard

  878. about this,

  879. they went

  880. to take

  881. charge of

  882. him for

  883. they said,

  884. he is

  885. out of

  886. his mind.

  887. And then

  888. just 10

  889. verses after

  890. that in

  891. Mark,

  892. we read

  893. this account

  894. of Jesus'

  895. mother and

  896. brothers arriving

  897. to talk

  898. to Jesus.

  899. And so we

  900. kind of get

  901. a little

  902. sense here

  903. of what's

  904. going on

  905. in the

  906. relationship

  907. between

  908. Jesus and

  909. his family

  910. around this

  911. time.

  912. It would

  913. seem that

  914. Jesus'

  915. family,

  916. his mother

  917. and his

  918. brothers,

  919. don't

  920. understand

  921. what's going

  922. on here.

  923. Maybe

  924. they're even

  925. a little

  926. embarrassed

  927. by all the

  928. public

  929. attention

  930. that's coming

  931. to them

  932. and coming

  933. to Jesus.

  934. perhaps

  935. some of

  936. them are

  937. even unsure

  938. about some

  939. of the

  940. things that

  941. Jesus has

  942. been saying.

  943. Maybe some

  944. of his

  945. brothers.

  946. We kind

  947. of notice

  948. in the

  949. context of

  950. Mark,

  951. if we just

  952. look down

  953. the page

  954. a little

  955. bit,

  956. that already

  957. Jesus is

  958. facing major

  959. opposition

  960. from the

  961. Pharisees

  962. and the

  963. teachers of

  964. the law.

  965. They're even

  966. accusing him

  967. already at

  968. this point

  969. of being

  970. possessed

  971. by the

  972. devil.

  973. And what's

  974. Jesus'

  975. mother and

  976. brothers doing?

  977. well,

  978. they're trying

  979. to take

  980. charge of

  981. him,

  982. it says.

  983. At least

  984. some of

  985. them,

  986. probably his

  987. brothers,

  988. are saying,

  989. he's out

  990. of his

  991. mind.

  992. He's not

  993. possessed.

  994. He's gone

  995. insane.

  996. It's not

  997. really the

  998. kind of

  999. support that

  1000. you hope

  1001. for from

  1002. your family

  1003. when you

  1004. take a

  1005. stand for

  1006. what's

  1007. right and

  1008. speak the

  1009. truth.

  1010. But I

  1011. think it

  1012. might shed

  1013. some light

  1014. on what's

  1015. happening here

  1016. in Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  1017. chapter 8.

  1018. Mark

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  1019. chapter 3.

  1020. We don't

  1021. know for

  1022. sure,

  1023. but perhaps

  1024. Jesus'

  1025. mother and

  1026. brothers have

  1027. come again

  1028. to try and

  1029. take charge

  1030. of him,

  1031. or at least

  1032. let's sit

  1033. down and

  1034. have a

  1035. discussion

  1036. as a

  1037. family here.

  1038. We've got

  1039. to talk

  1040. some things

  1041. through.

  1042. Whatever the

  1043. case,

  1044. Jesus turns

  1045. their arrival

  1046. into a

  1047. teaching moment.

  1048. He declares

  1049. that his

  1050. family,

  1051. those who

  1052. are kin

  1053. to him,

  1054. are those

  1055. who hear

  1056. God's word

  1057. and put

  1058. it into

  1059. practice.

  1060. And I

  1061. don't think

  1062. that we

  1063. should read

  1064. any disrespect

  1065. into those

  1066. words from

  1067. Jesus towards

  1068. his family.

  1069. I think if

  1070. anybody was

  1071. careful to

  1072. honor his

  1073. mother and

  1074. father,

  1075. it was

  1076. Jesus.

  1077. It might

  1078. be that

  1079. there's some

  1080. tension here

  1081. between honoring

  1082. Jesus'

  1083. human mother

  1084. and honoring

  1085. his heavenly

  1086. father.

  1087. father.

  1088. But I

  1089. don't think

  1090. that Jesus

  1091. is disowning

  1092. them,

  1093. saying you're

  1094. not my

  1095. mother and

  1096. brothers anymore

  1097. or saying

  1098. that they

  1099. don't matter

  1100. to him.

  1101. You're not

  1102. important to

  1103. me anymore.

  1104. But what

  1105. Jesus is

  1106. saying is

  1107. that what's

  1108. most important,

  1109. even more

  1110. important maybe

  1111. than our

  1112. family relationships

  1113. is hearing

  1114. God's word

  1115. and putting

  1116. it into

  1117. practice.

  1118. That's the

  1119. chief concern

  1120. of Jesus

  1121. doing the

  1122. will of

  1123. his father.

  1124. It trumps

  1125. everything else.

  1126. And not

  1127. only is that

  1128. Jesus'

  1129. priority to

  1130. obey the

  1131. word of

  1132. God and

  1133. submit to

  1134. his father,

  1135. but right

  1136. now he's

  1137. teaching the

  1138. very words

  1139. of God to

  1140. the people.

  1141. And that's

  1142. of the utmost

  1143. importance,

  1144. both to

  1145. God and

  1146. to the

  1147. people.

  1148. And if we

  1149. just follow

  1150. this through,

  1151. there are

  1152. some people

  1153. in the

  1154. crowd,

  1155. who are

  1156. there to

  1157. hear the

  1158. very word

  1159. of God

  1160. so that

  1161. they can

  1162. follow it

  1163. and put

  1164. it into

  1165. practice.

  1166. And therefore

  1167. some in the

  1168. room are

  1169. now just

  1170. as important

  1171. in this

  1172. moment to

  1173. Jesus as

  1174. his own

  1175. mom and

  1176. brothers.

  1177. It's not

  1178. that he's

  1179. diminishing the

  1180. importance of

  1181. his family,

  1182. but that he's

  1183. elevating the

  1184. importance of

  1185. hearing the

  1186. word of God

  1187. and putting it

  1188. into practice.

  1189. that's as

  1190. important as

  1191. family.

  1192. Those who

  1193. hear and put

  1194. God's word

  1195. into practice

  1196. are my

  1197. family.

  1198. This really

  1199. fits with

  1200. what we've

  1201. just been

  1202. hearing from

  1203. the parable

  1204. of the

  1205. sower and

  1206. the analogy

  1207. of the

  1208. lamp.

  1209. Both of

  1210. those things

  1211. have been

  1212. about hearing

  1213. the word

  1214. of God

  1215. and how

  1216. important

  1217. that is.

  1218. Jesus says

  1219. a lot about

  1220. that, but

  1221. maybe it's

  1222. because we

  1223. have this

  1224. tendency to

  1225. underestimate

  1226. the importance

  1227. of hearing

  1228. God's word

  1229. and of really

  1230. paying attention

  1231. to it.

  1232. It's like

  1233. Jesus is

  1234. saying, there

  1235. isn't anything

  1236. more important

  1237. than hearing

  1238. and putting

  1239. into practice

  1240. the word of

  1241. God.

  1242. It's at,

  1243. it's even

  1244. above the

  1245. level of

  1246. family.

  1247. It's what

  1248. characterizes

  1249. the family

  1250. of God.

  1251. it's also

  1252. hard not

  1253. to miss

  1254. the emphasis

  1255. of Jesus

  1256. on putting

  1257. it into

  1258. practice.

  1259. That's

  1260. something

  1261. maybe not

  1262. mentioned as

  1263. much in

  1264. the parables

  1265. before.

  1266. Those who

  1267. hear and

  1268. put it

  1269. into practice

  1270. are the

  1271. family of

  1272. Jesus.

  1273. It suggests

  1274. to us that

  1275. if we hear

  1276. the word

  1277. of God

  1278. but don't

  1279. put it

  1280. into

  1281. practice,

  1282. we fall

  1283. short of

  1284. the family

  1285. of God.

  1286. We cannot

  1287. claim to

  1288. be a

  1289. brother or

  1290. sister of

  1291. Christ or

  1292. a fellow

  1293. son or

  1294. daughter of

  1295. God.

  1296. In Jesus'

  1297. parable of

  1298. the sower,

  1299. this is

  1300. probably the

  1301. difference right

  1302. here between

  1303. those three

  1304. soils where

  1305. there was no

  1306. harvest and

  1307. the good

  1308. soil where

  1309. there was a

  1310. great harvest.

  1311. All of the

  1312. soils had

  1313. the seed fall

  1314. on them.

  1315. All of the

  1316. people heard

  1317. the word of

  1318. God but

  1319. only one by

  1320. persevering

  1321. produced a

  1322. crop.

  1323. Those who

  1324. hear,

  1325. and truly

  1326. believe the

  1327. word of

  1328. God will

  1329. put it

  1330. into

  1331. practice.

  1332. Those who

  1333. hear and

  1334. truly believe

  1335. the word of

  1336. God will

  1337. put it into

  1338. practice.

  1339. It's not

  1340. enough just

  1341. to hear it.

  1342. That in

  1343. itself doesn't

  1344. result in

  1345. salvation.

  1346. It doesn't

  1347. do anything

  1348. for us.

  1349. It's not

  1350. enough to

  1351. just come to

  1352. church every

  1353. Sunday and

  1354. hear the

  1355. word of

  1356. God,

  1357. the words

  1358. of Jesus.

  1359. We must

  1360. put Jesus'

  1361. words into

  1362. practice.

  1363. We must

  1364. obey them.

  1365. We must

  1366. do them.

  1367. That's the

  1368. evidence that

  1369. we truly

  1370. believe.

  1371. Now don't

  1372. misunderstand me.

  1373. I'm not

  1374. saying we

  1375. need to do

  1376. good works

  1377. in order to

  1378. be saved.

  1379. To be

  1380. saved we

  1381. just believe

  1382. in Jesus.

  1383. No good

  1384. works required.

  1385. And true

  1386. belief in

  1387. Jesus will

  1388. lead us to

  1389. do what

  1390. he says.

  1391. to obey

  1392. his word.

  1393. To do

  1394. good works.

  1395. Is it

  1396. your life

  1397. goal not

  1398. only to

  1399. hear the

  1400. word of

  1401. God but

  1402. to do

  1403. it?

  1404. Is that

  1405. the highest

  1406. priority in

  1407. your life?

  1408. To put

  1409. God's words

  1410. into practice?

  1411. If it's

  1412. not, what

  1413. is the

  1414. highest priority

  1415. in your

  1416. life?

  1417. I want

  1418. to urge

  1419. you this

  1420. morning to

  1421. examine

  1422. yourself and

  1423. ask yourself

  1424. that question.

  1425. I really

  1426. do think

  1427. that's the

  1428. difference

  1429. between the

  1430. good soil

  1431. and the

  1432. other soils.

  1433. Between

  1434. having and

  1435. even what

  1436. you think

  1437. you have

  1438. will be

  1439. taken from

  1440. you.

  1441. God's

  1442. love.

  1443. I don't

  1444. know what's

  1445. in everyone's

  1446. hearts but

  1447. Jesus does.

  1448. And we

  1449. can't, when

  1450. it comes to

  1451. Jesus, we

  1452. can't fake

  1453. it till we

  1454. make it.

  1455. Either we

  1456. listen to his

  1457. words and in

  1458. faith take

  1459. them as

  1460. truth and put

  1461. them into

  1462. practice or

  1463. we perish.

  1464. Am I

  1465. really listening

  1466. to God?

  1467. Am I

  1468. really

  1469. listening to

  1470. Jesus?

  1471. Does he

  1472. have the

  1473. attention of

  1474. my heart?

  1475. Am I

  1476. organizing my

  1477. life according

  1478. to the

  1479. commands and

  1480. the priorities

  1481. that he

  1482. has given?

  1483. This is what

1484. it is to be a

  1485. child of God,

  1486. to be in the

  1487. family of God.

  1488. This is what

1489. it is to be a

  1490. follower of

  1491. Jesus.

  1492. Now God

  1493. knows that we

  1494. will not live

  1495. perfectly in

  1496. perfect obedience

  1497. always.

  1498. But if we

  1499. really believe in

  1500. him, if we

  1501. really fear him

  1502. and love him,

  1503. then we will

  1504. take him

  1505. seriously.

  1506. We'll make

  1507. every effort to

  1508. do what he

  1509. says.

  1510. His words are

  1511. light in the

  1512. darkness.

  1513. His words reveal

  1514. the secrets of

  1515. the kingdom of

  1516. God.

  1517. That great

  1518. kingdom that's

  1519. soon going to

  1520. sweep over

  1521. this world

  1522. and overshadow

  1523. all human

  1524. history forever.

  1525. Therefore,

  1526. consider carefully

  1527. how you

  1528. listen.

  1529. Many of you

  1530. hearing this,

  1531. I hope and I

  1532. pray, are

  1533. thinking,

  1534. yes, amen.

  1535. That's my

  1536. life's goal,

  1537. to obey the

  1538. Lord Jesus

  1539. Christ and do

  1540. what he says.

  1541. And if that's

  1542. you, that's a

  1543. good indication.

  1544. I think that

  1545. you are that

  1546. good soil.

  1547. Soil.

  1548. Jesus says

  1549. this, whoever

  1550. has will be

  1551. given more.

  1552. So I want to

  1553. encourage you, if

  1554. that's you, keep

  1555. on.

  1556. Don't give up.

  1557. Let's not grow

  1558. weary of doing

  1559. good.

  1560. For at the

  1561. proper time, we

  1562. will reap a

  1563. harvest.

  1564. If we don't

  1565. give up, we

  1566. will inherit what

  1567. has been

  1568. promised.

  1569. We will receive

  1570. that crown of

  1571. glory.

  1572. The Lord has

  1573. promised.

  1574. His word is

  1575. true.

  1576. And he will

  1577. bring it to

  1578. pass.

  1579. We can be

  1580. sure of it.

  1581. Let's pray.

  1582. Father in

  1583. heaven, we

  1584. thank you that

  1585. you have spoken

  1586. to us through

  1587. your son.

  1588. And I pray

  1589. that each one

  1590. of us

  1591. values that so

  1592. deeply and

  1593. treasures that

  1594. so deeply

  1595. that we

  1596. respond to

  1597. it well.

  1598. That it's not

  1599. just a religion

  1600. thing that we

  1601. do because

  1602. that's what we

  1603. grew up with,

  1604. but it's a

  1605. thing that's

  1606. meaningful and

  1607. powerful in our

  1608. lives that we

  1609. are doing this.

  1610. We are living

  1611. this way because

  1612. we know you.

  1613. We believe in

  1614. you.

  1615. We believe your

  1616. words.

  1617. And it's our

  1618. greatest honor and

  1619. joy in life to

  1620. submit to you

  1621. and to follow

  1622. you.

  1623. For you are a

  1624. glorious God.

  1625. Work that in

  1626. each one of our

  1627. hearts, Lord.

  1628. Don't let us

  1629. deceive ourselves.

  1630. We just commit

  1631. ourselves to you

  1632. in Jesus' name.

  1633. Amen.
