  1. Matthew 1, 18-25.

  2. This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about.

  3. ! His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph,

  4. ! but before they came together,

  5. she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.

  6. Because Joseph, her husband, was faithful to the law

  7. and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace,

  8. he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

  9. But after he had considered this,

  10. an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,

  11. Joseph, son of David,

  12. do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife

  13. because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  14. She will give birth to a son

  15. and you are to give him the name Jesus

  16. because he will save his people from their sins.

  17. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet.

  18. The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son

  19. and they will call him Emmanuel,

  20. which means God with us.

  21. When Joseph woke up,

  22. he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him

  23. and took Mary home as his wife.

  24. But he did not consummate their marriage

  25. until she gave birth to a son

  26. and he gave him the name Jesus.

  27. Can you imagine how Joseph must have felt?

  28. What do you mean you're pregnant?

  29. Joseph, I'm telling you,

  30. I haven't been with another man.

  31. I'm telling the truth.

  32. You haven't been with another man

  33. and yet you're pregnant?

  34. Am I missing something?

  35. Did someone do this to you?

  36. No, Joseph.

  37. I told you I had a visitor a few months back.

  38. He was an angel sent from God.

  39. He told me that I would become pregnant by the Spirit of God

  40. and that this child,

  41. are you kidding me, Mary?

  42. Do you expect me to believe

  43. that an angel appeared to you

  44. sent from God?

  45. That you're pregnant by the Spirit of God?

  46. God, how could you do this to me?

  47. I don't even know what to say to you.

  48. We can only imagine how that conversation went.

  49. We get a little bit of a hint.

  50. Joseph was going to break off the engagement,

  51. which was the equivalent of a divorce

  52. back in their culture and time.

  53. He obviously didn't believe Mary.

  54. Otherwise, he wouldn't have even been thinking

  55. about getting a divorce.

  56. But he also truly loved Mary.

  57. Even though he didn't believe her,

  58. he didn't want to expose her to public disgrace.

  59. He didn't want to ruin her life,

  60. even though she had just broken his heart.

  61. And so he was looking at getting a quiet divorce,

  62. keeping it on the down low.

  63. It was an honorable thing to do.

  64. But after he had considered this,

  65. an angel of the Lord appeared to him

  66. in a dream

  67. and said,

  68. Joseph, son of David,

  69. do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife,

  70. because what is conceived in her

  71. is from the Holy Spirit.

  72. She will give birth to a son

  73. and you are to give him the name Jesus

  74. because he will save his people

  75. from their sins.

  76. Wow.

  77. What an emotional roller coaster that must have been.

  78. First, he finds out that the young lady

  79. that he has chosen is pregnant.

  80. Then, he gets this news from the angel.

  81. The last thing that he would have ever expected

  82. to happen.

  83. She's telling the truth.

  84. He really is conceived

  85. by the Holy Spirit of God.

  86. Can you imagine Joseph's reaction?

  87. Like, I can't believe this.

  88. She's telling the truth.

  89. Who can I tell this to?

  90. If I tell anybody this news,

  91. they're going to think I'm crazy.

  92. A son conceived from the Holy Spirit of God.

  93. That's amazing.

  94. But what's even more amazing

  95. is this one thing that the angel from God said

  96. about this child to Joseph.

  97. You are to give him the name Jesus.

  98. Jesus, which in the Greek of Matthew's day,

  99. Iesus.

  100. But Iesus was the equivalent of the Hebrew name,

  101. Yeshua.

  102. Yeshua.

  103. Which literally means,

  104. Yahweh saves.

  105. God saves.

  106. You are to give him the name Jesus.

  107. God saves.

  108. Because he will save his people

  109. from their sins.

  110. I'm going to guess that Joseph

  111. was maybe a little surprised

  112. at that last part.

  113. Perhaps like many of the other

  114. Jewish people of his day,

  115. he would have expected the angel to say,

  116. because he will save his people

  117. from their enemies.

  118. Like the Romans.

  119. The angel had said to Mary

  120. that the child to be born

  121. would be a great king.

  122. That he would take up the throne

  123. of his father,

  124. David,

  125. their ancestor,

  126. King David.

  127. It had been centuries

  128. since the Jewish people

  129. enjoyed true freedom

  130. as a sovereign nation.

  131. Like back in the days

  132. of King David.

  133. The Romans had conquered

  134. the land of Israel

  135. and they ruled over it

  136. with an iron fist.

  137. It was from the Roman Empire

  138. that the Jewish people

  139. longed for deliverance.

  140. This is not what the angel

  141. said to Joseph.

  142. You are to call him Jesus.

  143. You are to give him

  144. the name Jesus.

  145. God saves.

  146. Because he will deliver

  147. his people

  148. from their sins.

  149. According to God

  150. and the words

  151. that he spoke

  152. through the prophets

  153. long before Joseph

  154. was born,

  155. there was a greater enemy

  156. than the Romans.

  157. A bigger problem

  158. than national sovereignty.

  159. According to God,

  160. the sins of his people

  161. are an even greater threat.

  162. An even bigger problem.

  163. Sin is not a word

  164. that we use much today

  165. outside of the church.

  166. But in this context,

  167. it refers to the countless ways

  168. that people have turned

  169. away from God.

  170. To the many ways

  171. that we intentionally

  172. ignore God

  173. or disobey

  174. his commands.

  175. Sin generally refers

  176. to the things

  177. that we think

  178. or say

  179. or do

  180. that are contrary

  181. to the good ways

  182. that God has made us for.

  183. Things like selfishness.

  184. pride,

  185. pride,

  186. hatred,

  187. deceit,

  188. rebelling against authority,

  189. immoral behavior,

  190. and the list goes on.

  191. But the overarching problem

  192. of sin

  193. is not just

  194. the ugliness of it

  195. or how it wrecks

  196. our relationships

  197. with each other.

  198. The overarching problem

  199. of sin

  200. is what we deserve

  201. for it

  202. as people

  203. who have turned

  204. our backs

  205. on the God

  206. who created us.

  207. we have essentially

  208. spit in the face

  209. of our maker.

  210. We were under

  211. his authority

  212. at the beginning.

  213. He made us

  214. and therefore

  215. he has the rights

  216. to us

  217. but we rebelled

  218. and humanity

  219. continues to rebel.

  220. the overarching

  221. problem

  222. with our sins

  223. is that they put us

  224. in a dangerous

  225. position

  226. before God.

  227. He is good.

  228. He is just.

  229. God has been saying

  230. it throughout his book.

  231. A day is coming

  232. when he will take

  233. the seat of justice

  234. and once for all

  235. put everything right.

  236. He will ensure

  237. that no one

  238. gets away

  239. with the wrongs

  240. that they have done

  241. whether that be

  242. great evil

  243. or the smallest

  244. of selfish acts.

  245. The ugliness

  246. of sin

  247. will be eradicated

  248. from his world

  249. and that's a problem

  250. for us

  251. because we are all

  252. guilty of sin

  253. against him

  254. and against

  255. one another.

  256. Sin is our

  257. greatest problem.

  258. It is our

  259. greatest enemy

  260. and it's not just

  261. some disease

  262. that we

  263. innocently caught.

  264. We ourselves

  265. are responsible

  266. for every sin

  267. we have committed.

  268. This is what

  269. half the Bible

  270. is about.

  271. We're in deep

  272. trouble with God

  273. and it's our fault

  274. because we

  275. have sinned

  276. against him.

  277. But now listen

  278. to these words

  279. of the angel

  280. again.

  281. She,

  282. Mary,

  283. will give birth

  284. to a son

  285. and you are

  286. to name him

  287. Jesus.

  288. God saves

  289. because he

  290. will save

  291. his people

  292. from

  293. their sins.

  294. This child

  295. in Mary's womb

  296. is going to

  297. rescue his people

  298. from the guilt

  299. that they have

  300. because of

  301. their sins.

  302. Salvation

  303. will come

  304. through the child

  305. born of Mary.

  306. Amazing.

  307. Jesus,

  308. the son of God

  309. came into our

  310. world on a

  311. rescue mission.

  312. It was a

  313. rescue mission

  314. that would cost

  315. him his life.

  316. He would die

  317. on a Roman

  318. cross

  319. and there

  320. receive upon

  321. himself the

  322. justice of

  323. God

  324. for the sins

  325. committed

  326. by all

  327. who would

  328. believe in

  329. him

  330. so that

  331. we could

  332. be forgiven

  333. completely

  334. and let

  335. off the

  336. hook

  337. completely

  338. for every

  339. sin we've

  340. ever committed.

  341. Why would

  342. God make a

  343. deal like

  344. this?

  345. His own

  346. son's death

  347. for our

  348. deliverance.

  349. God's answer

  350. from the pages

  351. of the Bible

  352. is that no

  353. matter how

  354. far from

  355. home we've

  356. run,

  357. ignoring him,

  358. doing what

  359. we know is

  360. wrong,

  361. God's answer

  362. is this,

  363. I love

  364. you and

  365. I want you

  366. to come

  367. home.

  368. For God

  369. so loved

  370. the world

  371. that he

  372. gave his

  373. one and

  374. only son

  375. that whoever

  376. believes in

  377. him shall

  378. not perish

  379. but have

  380. eternal life

  381. for God

  382. did not

  383. send his

  384. son into

  385. the world

  386. to condemn

  387. the world

  388. but to

  389. save the

  390. world

  391. through him

  392. whoever

  393. believes in

  394. him is

  395. not

  396. condemned

  397. but whoever

  398. does not

  399. believe

  400. stands

  401. condemned

  402. already.

  403. if you're

  404. here this

  405. morning

  406. and you

  407. haven't

  408. believed in

  409. Jesus

  410. I want to

  411. encourage you

  412. it's not too

  413. late to

  414. make peace

  415. with God

  416. it's not too

  417. late to open

  418. your heart

  419. to the most

  420. wonderful and

  421. fulfilling

  422. relationship that

  423. we can have

  424. our relationship

  425. with God

  426. if you're

  427. looking for

  428. help on how

  429. to do this

  430. or guidance

  431. you can

  432. feel free to

  433. talk to me

  434. after the

  435. service or

  436. anyone else

  437. here that

  438. you know

  439. and trust

  440. we'd love to

  441. sit with you

  442. and pray with

  443. you

  444. but for those

  445. of us who

  446. have this

  447. hope and

  448. this faith

  449. in Jesus

  450. and who

  451. know him

  452. Christmas is a

  453. special time

  454. it's an

  455. occasion for

  456. sober

  457. reflection

  458. because we

  459. needed a

  460. savior

  461. we needed

  462. salvation

  463. but it's

  464. also an

  465. occasion for

  466. great celebration

  467. because long

  468. ago in

  469. Bethlehem a

  470. child was

  471. born and

  472. he wasn't

  473. just any

  474. child

  475. he was a

  476. child who

  477. would grow up

  478. to do what

  479. no one else

  480. could

  481. to save

  482. his people

  483. from their

  484. sins

  485. let's pray

  486. father in

  487. heaven we

  488. thank you

  489. for sending

  490. your son

  491. Jesus

  492. the ultimate

  493. gift

  494. a gift we

  495. could never

  496. repay

  497. you don't

  498. even want us

  499. to try to

  500. repay because

  501. it cannot be

  502. repaid

  503. a gift of

  504. grace

  505. a gift of

  506. your kindness

  507. and mercy

  508. to us

  509. and I pray

  510. Lord that

  511. you would

  512. just enable

  513. us this week

  514. to celebrate

  515. deeply and

  516. fully

  517. your son

  518. our salvation

  519. your desire

  520. to be

  521. with us

  522. our Christ

  523. and our

  524. king

  525. the one who

  526. will come

  527. and reign

  528. forever

  529. someday

  530. what a

  531. wonderful thing

  532. that you have

  533. done we

  534. just thank you

  535. and we

  536. praise you

  537. for your

  538. awesome goodness

  539. and sending

  540. Jesus to us

  541. in his name

  542. amen

  543. I'll invite the

  544. music team to

  545. come up and

  546. lead us in one

  547. more song

  548. up and

  549. up
