  1. All right, well this morning we return to the story of Jesus as told by Luke.

  2. And today we're going to look at just a few verses.

  3. We pick up the story in verse 21 of Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  4. Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.

  5. And he said,

  6. The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders,

  7. the chief priests, and the teachers of the law.

  8. And he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

  9. As we saw last week, Jesus is talking to his disciples in private.

  10. And the conversation up till this point has been about who Jesus is.

  11. Remember they asked,

  12. Jesus actually asked the disciples,

  13. Who do the crowds say I am?

  14. And the disciples go through a short list of the answers that they've heard from different people.

  15. Some say you are John the Baptizer, resurrected from the dead.

  16. Others that you are the prophet Elijah.

  17. He didn't die but was taken up to heaven by God and now perhaps God has sent him back.

  18. And some others say you are one of the prophets from long ago, come back to life from the dead.

  19. Jesus finally asks the disciples themselves,

  20. What about you?

  21. Who do you say I am?

  22. And Peter, one of the twelve, answers,

  23. God's Messiah.

  24. Literally, the Christ of God.

  25. Matthew records an even fuller answer of Peter's.

  26. In his gospel,

  27. You are the Messiah,

  28. the Son of the Living God.

  29. That title, Christ,

  30. it means Messiah.

  31. And Messiah means Anointed One.

  32. It carries within it the meaning of being divinely chosen as king.

  33. A king selected by God himself.

  34. Up until this point,

  35. there's been centuries of God speaking to the people of Israel through the prophets.

  36. And great promises have been made by God.

  37. There are these great expectations of a Messiah.

  38. A coming king who is chosen by God.

  39. We're not talking about, you know,

  40. just a good and wise regional ruler for a time.

  41. We're talking about a king whose reign,

  42. whose kingdom will have global implications.

  43. Something the likes of which the world has never seen.

  44. Even the great empires of old,

  45. even the modern day nations of today,

  46. don't come close to what is promised about the Messiah.

  47. Long ago, through the prophets.

  48. A kingdom characterized by peace,

  49. that endures.

  50. By righteousness.

  51. By justice.

  52. By justice.

  53. By justice.

  54. By justice.

  55. And not by the violence and corruption

  56. that we have seen through the centuries

  57. and even still see today all over the world.

  58. Well, because of these many great promises

  59. spoken by the prophets long ago,

  60. the Jews who had faith

  61. carried within them

  62. great expectations

  63. and a deep longing

  64. for this Messiah

  65. to be given.

  66. And so Peter and the disciples

  67. who have been following Jesus

  68. for a little while now,

  69. they've been listening to his preaching,

  70. they have witnessed his miracles,

  71. and here's the moment

  72. where they finally come to answer this question

  73. of who Jesus is out loud.

  74. When Jesus asks,

  75. who do you say I am?

  76. Peter blurts it out.

  77. You are the one.

  78. You are God's king.

  79. There was some wondering at first.

  80. If you recall the gospel of John,

  81. as they went and found each other

  82. and told each other about Jesus at first,

  83. we, you know,

  84. this could be the Messiah.

  85. But this is that moment

  86. where Peter just sort of blurts it out

  87. and says,

  88. I know it for sure.

  89. But then what Jesus says next,

  90. which we just read,

  91. might be a shock to us.

  92. Jesus strictly warned them

  93. not to tell this to anyone.

  94. Matthew's gospel is even more explicit.

  95. Then he ordered his disciples

  96. not to tell anyone

  97. that he was the Messiah.

  98. That's kind of surprising, isn't it?

  99. Like, why not?

  100. Why can't we tell people?

  101. This is what this is all about, isn't it?

  102. And none of the gospels at this moment

  103. gives us a clear statement of why not.

  104. Some suggestions have been made about this.

  105. Some think that perhaps

  106. just telling people that Jesus is the Messiah

  107. would have brought about opposition too quickly.

  108. And in the gospel of John,

  109. we read that Jesus does seem to have

  110. this sense of God's timing

  111. and how things should unfold.

  112. We hear him say,

  113. my hour has not yet come.

  114. There's sort of a pace

  115. at which he reveals himself to the people.

  116. Another idea is that Jesus wants the people

  117. to arrive at this faith in him as Messiah,

  118. not by just hearing him declare,

  119. I'm the Messiah,

  120. but by looking at the signs.

  121. And perhaps just, you know,

  122. saying it out loud all over the place

  123. right from the beginning

  124. would short circuit this process.

  125. The most popular suggestion

  126. is that Jesus commands them

  127. not to speak of him as Messiah

  128. because he knows that

  129. their understanding of Messiah

  130. and the people's understanding of Messiah

  131. is full of misconceptions

  132. and wrong ideas.

  133. And so to go around declaring Jesus as Messiah

  134. at this point might stir up ideas

  135. of political revolution

  136. when God's plan for the Messiah will unfold

  137. contrary to expectations.

  138. And this last idea kind of fits

  139. with what we see in these next words of Jesus

  140. in verse 22.

  141. Jesus strictly warned them

  142. not to tell this to anyone.

  143. And he said,

  144. the Son of Man must suffer many things

  145. and be rejected by the elders,

  146. the chief priests,

  147. and the teachers of the law.

  148. And he must be killed.

  149. And he must be killed.

  150. This is certainly not

  151. what anyone was expecting

  152. of the Messiah.

  153. Let's look at these words

  154. a little more closely.

  155. We see that Jesus refers to himself

  156. in the third person

  157. as the Son of Man.

  158. That sounds strange

  159. to us maybe.

  160. It's kind of a mysterious

  161. and veiled way of speaking.

  162. The Son of Man

  163. was what God called

  164. the prophet Ezekiel

  165. in the Old Testament.

  166. And as to its meaning,

  167. it's a figure of speech

  168. that basically means

  169. a male human being.

  170. That's what a son of man is.

  171. But then there's this one passage

  172. where the prophet Daniel

  173. has a strange vision.

  174. Daniel chapter 7, verse 13.

    Daniel 7:13

  175. And in his vision,

  176. this is many years before this,

  177. Daniel sees one

  178. like a son of man

  179. coming with the clouds of heaven

  180. and approaching God.

  181. And this one like a son of man

  182. in Daniel's vision

  183. receives authority

  184. and glory

  185. and sovereign power

  186. and all nations

  187. and peoples worship him.

  188. And he comes to rule

  189. and reign over this

  190. great kingdom

  191. that will last forever.

  192. Well, Jesus knows

  193. who he is.

  194. He is the Messiah.

  195. He is this Son of Man

  196. described by Daniel.

  197. But there's enough mystery

  198. around this title

  199. that many will not see

  200. the title as

  201. an explicit claim

  202. to be the Messiah.

  203. Many will wonder about this.

  204. Some will see it

  205. and believe.

  206. And yet others

  207. who are looking to take Jesus out,

  208. they won't really be able

  209. to pin this on Jesus

  210. as an overt claim.

  211. But even if they do,

  212. what Jesus is saying here

  213. is very surprising.

  214. The Son of Man

  215. must suffer

  216. many things.

  217. Well, there's nothing

  218. in Daniel's vision

  219. about that.

  220. We can imagine

  221. the disciples

  222. sort of sitting there

  223. in this moment

  224. scratching their heads

  225. like,

  226. what do you mean

  227. the Son of Man,

  228. the Messiah,

  229. must suffer?

  230. What kinds of things?

  231. And Jesus goes on.

  232. He says,

  233. the Son of Man

  234. must be rejected

  235. by the elders

  236. and the chief priests

  237. and the teachers

  238. of the law.

  239. That's also probably not

  240. what the disciples

  241. were expecting.

  242. Perhaps they were expecting

  243. that eventually

  244. Jesus would win them over.

  245. That they too

  246. would come to own

  247. or recognize

  248. Jesus as their Messiah.

  249. Yeah, there's been opposition.

  250. Yes, they've even been

  251. plotting to kill Jesus,

  252. but surely God's Messiah

  253. won't be killed

  254. by the leaders of Israel.

  255. He's supposed to be

  256. the one to unify

  257. the people, right?

  258. Yet Jesus says,

  259. no,

  260. he must be rejected

  261. by the elders,

  262. the chief priests

  263. and the teachers

  264. of the law.

  265. If we think about

  266. those three roles,

  267. that covers both

  268. the political side

  269. of things

  270. at the leadership level

  271. in Israel

  272. and the spiritual

  273. side of things.

  274. Not just the Sanhedrin

  275. or the council of elders

  276. who ruled the daily affairs

  277. of the people,

  278. but also the spiritual leaders

  279. at the temple,

  280. the priests.

  281. Those considered authorities

  282. on how to understand

  283. the scriptures,

  284. all of them

  285. would reject Jesus.

  286. Okay.

  287. So how's this going to work

  288. then, Jesus?

  289. If you will be king,

  290. then what role

  291. or place

  292. will those guys have

  293. in the kingdom?

  294. If they reject you,

  295. then what will you do

  296. with them

  297. once you

  298. have the throne?

  299. This is how I imagine

  300. the disciples

  301. trying to sort this

  302. all out in their minds.

  303. And then comes

  304. the jaw dropper.

  305. The son of man

  306. must suffer many things

  307. and be rejected

  308. by the elders,

  309. chief priests

  310. and teachers of the law

  311. and he must be killed.

  312. What?

  313. What?

  314. This is the first plain mention

  315. of this

  316. by Jesus

  317. to his disciples.

  318. What kind of king

  319. chosen by God,

  320. what kind of anointed one

  321. gets killed?

  322. How could that be?

  323. Jesus adds one more thing.

  324. He says he must be killed

  325. and on the third day

  326. be raised to life.

  327. And this last part

  328. about being raised to life,

  329. we know the story,

  330. of course,

  331. what that's talking about,

  332. the resurrection,

  333. but this last part,

  334. it seems the disciples

  335. heard it,

  336. but it just didn't

  337. really sink in.

  338. It's like they were

  339. so shocked

  340. by the idea,

  341. the thought,

  342. that Jesus,

  343. the one they've been following,

  344. would be killed

  345. and how that might

  346. come about.

  347. That very little thought

  348. was given to that statement

  349. that on the third day,

  350. he would be raised to life.

  351. Even after Jesus

  352. rises from the dead,

  353. there's that moment of,

  354. oh, yes,

  355. now I remember

  356. he said something about that.

  357. He said that he would

  358. be raised to life

  359. on the third day.

  360. But for now,

  361. it's like they hear the words

  362. and they don't really hear it.

  363. the part about getting killed

  364. must have been

  365. so utterly unexpected,

  366. so contrary

  367. to the expectations.

  368. In fact,

  369. at this point

  370. in the conversation,

  371. we read that

  372. right after saying this,

  373. Peter

  374. takes Jesus aside

  375. and begins

  376. to rebuke Jesus.

  377. We read of this

  378. in Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  379. Peter takes Jesus aside

  380. and begins

  381. to rebuke him.

  382. You can almost imagine

  383. Peter in this moment

  384. like,

  385. what are you talking

  386. about, Jesus?

  387. They're not going

  388. to kill you.

  389. You're the Messiah.

  390. Don't say things

  391. like this.

  392. We're not going

  393. to let anything

  394. happen to you.

  395. If anybody even

  396. tries to lay

  397. a finger on you,

  398. and if you keep

  399. talking like this,

  400. Jesus,

  401. you're going to start

  402. scaring the people away.

  403. We need their support

  404. if we're going

  405. to challenge

  406. the elders

  407. and the chief priests

  408. and the teachers

  409. of the law.

  410. We can only imagine

  411. what Peter said

  412. as he rebuked Jesus.

  413. It doesn't say.

  414. Well, in Mark's gospel,

  415. Jesus comes back

  416. at Peter

  417. with a stinging

  418. rebuke of his own.

  419. Get behind me,

  420. Satan.

  421. Jesus said,

  422. you do not have

  423. in mind

  424. the concerns of God,

  425. but merely

  426. human concerns.

  427. So this is a clue

  428. that neither Peter

  429. nor the rest

  430. of the disciples

  431. had the right

  432. expectations

  433. of how things

  434. would go

  435. with the Messiah.

  436. I guess it seems

  437. that they envisioned

  438. this great movement

  439. just sort of

  440. picking up steam

  441. and the followers

  442. increasing

  443. and as more and more

  444. people become followers

  445. then eventually

  446. they all just

  447. parade Jesus

  448. right into Jerusalem

  449. and toss out

  450. the Romans

  451. and put Jesus

  452. on the throne

  453. and the glory

  454. days of Israel

  455. will begin.

  456. Kind of like

  457. in the days

  458. of King David.

  459. I mean,

  460. look at the miracles

  461. that we've been able

  462. to do,

  463. Andrew,

  464. in the name

  465. of Jesus.

  466. Look at the power

  467. and authority

  468. that he has.

  469. He is God's

  470. chosen one.

  471. He is the Messiah.

  472. This is it.

  473. And then Jesus

  474. just seems

  475. to start raining

  476. on his own parade.

  477. it's wonderful

  478. that you figured

  479. out who I really

  480. am, Peter.

  481. But now

  482. don't tell anyone.

  483. I'm going to

  484. suffer

  485. many things,

  486. be rejected,

  487. and be killed.

  488. This isn't

  489. going to go

  490. how you think,

  491. Peter.

  492. And it truly

  493. baffled

  494. the disciples

  495. when Jesus

  496. said these things.

  497. We're going to

  498. see that

  499. bafflement

  500. in the weeks

  501. ahead.

  502. What kind

  503. of kingdom

  504. begins

  505. with the

  506. suffering

  507. of its

  508. king?

  509. What kind

  510. of king

  511. gets fiercely

  512. hated and

  513. despised by

  514. the people

  515. in the land

  516. before he

  517. comes to the

  518. throne

  519. and then

  520. is put

  521. to death?

  522. How can

  523. this be,

  524. the kingdom

  525. of God?

  526. Why would

  527. God allow

  528. anyone to

  529. do this

  530. to his

  531. chosen king?

  532. This can't

  533. be right,

  534. can it?

  535. This can't

  536. be how the

  537. story goes,

  538. can it?

  539. But it is

  540. indeed how

  541. the story

  542. goes.

  543. It was in

  544. fact the

  545. plan of

  546. God right

  547. from the

  548. beginning.

  549. And Jesus

  550. knew this.

  551. think about

  552. this from

  553. the

  554. disciples

  555. perspective.

  556. What a

  557. crazy thing,

  558. eh?

  559. It finally

  560. comes to

  561. that moment

  562. where they

  563. realize that

  564. Jesus is

  565. the Messiah

  566. and they

  567. say it

  568. out loud

  569. and now

  570. Jesus says

  571. good.

  572. See that

  573. you don't

  574. tell anyone.

  575. And from

  576. here on out

  577. I want you

  578. to know

  579. that your

  580. expectations

  581. for the

  582. Messiah

  583. are way

  584. off.

  585. It's

  586. going to

  587. go the

  588. opposite

  589. of how

  590. you think

  591. in the

  592. short term.

  593. At this

  594. point

  595. Mark

  596. tells us

  597. that Jesus

  598. actually

  599. calls the

  600. crowd to

  601. him.

  602. And so

  603. these next

  604. things that

  605. we're about

  606. to read

  607. he says

  608. to the

  609. disciples

  610. and to

  611. the rest

  612. of them

  613. to them

  614. all.

  615. Verse

  616. 23

  617. Then he

  618. said to

  619. them all

  620. whoever

  621. wants to

  622. be my

  623. disciple

  624. must deny

  625. themselves

  626. and take

  627. up their

  628. cross

  629. daily

  630. and follow

  631. me.

  632. for

  633. whoever

  634. wants to

  635. save their

  636. life

  637. will lose

  638. it.

  639. But

  640. whoever

  641. loses

  642. their

  643. life

  644. for me

  645. will

  646. save

  647. it.

  648. What

  649. good is

  650. it for

  651. someone to

  652. gain the

  653. whole

  654. world

  655. and yet

  656. lose

  657. or

  658. forfeit

  659. their

  660. very

  661. self?

  662. whoever

  663. is ashamed

  664. of me

  665. and my

  666. words

  667. the son

  668. of man

  669. will be

  670. ashamed

  671. of them

  672. when he

  673. comes in

  674. his glory

  675. and in

  676. the glory

  677. of the

  678. father

  679. and of

  680. the holy

  681. angels.

  682. So while

  683. Peter's

  684. probably still

  685. trying to

  686. figure out

  687. why Jesus

  688. rebuked him

  689. so sternly

  690. and called

  691. him Satan

  692. Jesus

  693. is already

  694. speaking to

  695. the crowds

  696. and proclaiming

  697. a message

  698. of denial

  699. and death.

  700. Jesus

  701. said in

  702. private to

  703. them that

  704. he must

  705. be killed

  706. now he

  707. turns to

  708. the public

  709. and he

  710. says if

  711. you want

  712. to be

  713. my

  714. disciple

  715. if you

  716. want to

  717. be a

  718. follower

  719. of

  720. mine

  721. then you

  722. must

  723. take

  724. up

  725. your

  726. cross

  727. and

  728. follow

  729. me.

  730. You

  731. must

  732. stop

  733. trying to

  734. save

  735. your

  736. life

  737. and

  738. lose

  739. it

  740. for

  741. me.

  742. I'm

  743. not

  744. even

  745. sure

  746. how

  747. the

  748. crowd

  749. would

  750. have

  751. taken

  752. these

  753. words.

  754. When

  755. they

  756. heard

  757. that

  758. word

  759. cross

  760. take

  761. up

  762. the

  763. cross

  764. did

  765. they

  766. picture

  767. convicted

  768. criminals

  769. being

  770. marched

  771. down the

  772. street

  773. to the

  774. place

  775. where

  776. they

  777. would

  778. be

  779. executed

  780. or

  781. was

  782. Jesus

  783. saying

  784. this

  785. so

  786. that

  787. later

  788. they

  789. would

  790. understand

  791. as

  792. they

  793. watched

  794. Jesus

  795. carrying

  796. his

  797. cross

  798. to

  799. his

  800. death.

  801. death.

  802. I'm

  803. trying to

  804. think of

  805. how they

  806. would have

  807. thought of

  808. these

  809. words.

  810. Is

  811. Jesus

  812. calling

  813. us

  814. to

  815. die

  816. for

  817. him?

  818. Are

  819. things

  820. about

  821. to

  822. get

  823. ugly

  824. or

  825. violent?

  826. We're

  827. going to

  828. talk more

  829. next week

  830. about what

  831. Jesus

  832. is saying

  833. about

  834. being a

  835. disciple

  836. of his

  837. with

  838. these

  839. words.

  840. But

  841. for

  842. today

  843. through

  844. all of

  845. this

  846. we see

  847. Jesus

  848. hinting

  849. to the

  850. crowds.

  851. We hear

  852. him

  853. alluding

  854. to what

  855. he just

  856. told the

  857. disciples

  858. in

  859. private.

  860. Not

  861. only

  862. will

  863. he

  864. be

  865. killed

  866. but

  867. he

  868. will

  869. be

  870. crucified.

  871. The

  872. cross.

  873. He

  874. calls

  875. them to

  876. follow

  877. him.

  878. How?

  879. By

  880. taking

  881. up

  882. their

  883. cross.

  884. Jesus

  885. knows

  886. that

  887. this

  888. is

  889. what

  890. he

  891. will

  892. do

  893. in

  894. the

  895. days

  896. ahead.

  897. The

  898. cross

  899. was

  900. the

  901. method

  902. used

  903. by

  904. the

  905. Romans

  906. to

  907. execute

  908. criminals

  909. and

  910. make

  911. a

  912. spectacle

  913. of

  914. them.

  915. It

  916. was

  917. a

  918. bloody

  919. and

  920. torturous

  921. death.

  922. Slow,

  923. painful,

  924. brutal.

  925. But

  926. the

  927. Bible

  928. tells

  929. us

  930. that

  931. this

  932. was

  933. the

  934. plan

  935. of

  936. God.

  937. That

  938. this

  939. was

  940. the

  941. only

  942. way

  943. to

  944. restore

  945. the

  946. relationship

  947. between

  948. God

  949. and

  950. man.

  951. A

  952. relationship

  953. that

  954. is

  955. broken

  956. because

  957. of

  958. our

  959. sins.

  960. A

  961. sacrifice

  962. had to

  963. be

  964. made.

  965. A

  966. sentence

  967. had to

  968. be

  969. served.

  970. Justice

  971. had to

  972. be

  973. done.

  974. Jesus'

  975. enemies,

  976. as they

  977. crucify him,

  978. meant it

  979. for

  980. evil,

  981. but God

  982. used it

  983. for

  984. good.

  985. The

  986. Bible

  987. tells us

  988. that

  989. by

  990. Jesus'

  991. death,

  992. he

  993. made

  994. atonement

  995. for

  996. the

  997. sins

  998. of

  999. the

  1000. world.

  1001. It

  1002. tells us

  1003. that we

  1004. can be

  1005. forgiven

  1006. of any

  1007. wrong

  1008. we have

  1009. done

  1010. in the

  1011. sight

  1012. of

  1013. God

  1014. because

  1015. 2,000

  1016. years ago,

  1017. Jesus

  1018. stepped

  1019. forward

  1020. and

  1021. allowed

  1022. himself

  1023. to

  1024. suffer

  1025. many

  1026. things

  1027. and be

  1028. rejected

  1029. and be

  1030. killed.

  1031. He

  1032. took

  1033. upon

  1034. himself

  1035. the

  1036. punishment

  1037. that we

  1038. deserve

  1039. for our

  1040. sins

  1041. so that

  1042. we could

  1043. be healed,

  1044. forgiven,

  1045. restored

  1046. to

  1047. God.

  1048. God,

  1049. why would

  1050. Jesus do

  1051. this for

  1052. us?

  1053. The

  1054. answer of

  1055. the Bible

  1056. again and

  1057. again is

  1058. it's because

  1059. of his

  1060. great love

  1061. for us.

  1062. It's

  1063. amazing.

  1064. Why

  1065. would

  1066. God,

  1067. holy

  1068. God,

  1069. offer

  1070. eternal

  1071. life and

  1072. forgiveness

  1073. to

  1074. stubborn

  1075. and

  1076. rebellious

  1077. sinners

  1078. like you

  1079. and me

  1080. because

  1081. of his

  1082. great love

  1083. for us.

  1084. Listen to

  1085. how the

  1086. Apostle Paul

  1087. puts it

  1088. in his

  1089. letter to

  1090. the church

  1091. in Rome.

  1092. He says,

  1093. you see,

  1094. at just

  1095. the right

  1096. time,

  1097. while we

  1098. were still

  1099. powerless,

  1100. Christ

  1101. died for

  1102. the ungodly.

  1103. Very

  1104. rarely will

  1105. anyone die

  1106. for a

  1107. righteous

  1108. person.

  1109. Though for

  1110. a good

  1111. person,

  1112. someone might

  1113. possibly dare

  1114. to die,

  1115. but God

  1116. demonstrates

  1117. his own

  1118. love for

  1119. us in

  1120. this.

  1121. While we

  1122. were still

  1123. sinners,

  1124. Christ died

  1125. for us.

  1126. trust,

  1127. God does

  1128. something amazing

  1129. and wonderful.

  1130. He gives

  1131. us a new

  1132. birth.

  1133. He gives

  1134. us a new

  1135. life.

  1136. He changes

  1137. us.

  1138. He saves

  1139. us from

  1140. what the

  1141. Bible tells

  1142. us is

  1143. coming.

  1144. As we

  1145. talked about

  1146. this morning

  1147. in Sunday

  1148. school,

  1149. yes,

  1150. judgment

  1151. and wrath

  1152. are what

  1153. we deserve.

  1154. But there

  1155. is a way

  1156. that God

  1157. has provided

  1158. to be

  1159. saved from

  1160. that.

  1161. And that

  1162. way is

  1163. through faith

  1164. in Jesus,

  1165. the one

  1166. he sent.

  1167. Not only

  1168. that,

  1169. but he

  1170. promises us

  1171. citizenship

  1172. in his

  1173. kingdom

  1174. when Jesus

  1175. returns.

  1176. Many in

  1177. our world

  1178. are asleep

  1179. at the

  1180. wheel

  1181. and headed

  1182. for disaster.

  1183. By God's

  1184. grace and

  1185. mercy,

  1186. he has

  1187. awakened us

  1188. to the

  1189. danger ahead

  1190. and he

  1191. has shown

  1192. us the

  1193. way out.

  1194. And now

  1195. he has

  1196. sent us

  1197. to go

  1198. and to

  1199. wake others

  1200. to the

  1201. danger ahead

  1202. and show

  1203. them the

  1204. way to

  1205. be saved.

  1206. And that

  1207. way is not

  1208. complicated.

  1209. Sometimes we

  1210. overcomplicate

  1211. it.

  1212. It's just

  1213. telling people

  1214. this very

  1215. story of

  1216. Jesus.

  1217. The whole

  1218. thing,

  1219. from the

  1220. beginning

  1221. to the

  1222. end.

  1223. From his

  1224. birth,

  1225. to his

  1226. miracles,

  1227. to his

  1228. message,

  1229. to his

  1230. death,

  1231. to his

  1232. resurrection,

  1233. or as

  1234. much as

  1235. they're

  1236. willing to

  1237. hear.

  1238. By

  1239. putting

  1240. their

  1241. faith in

  1242. him and

  1243. what he

  1244. has done,

  1245. they can

  1246. be saved,

  1247. just as

  1248. we have.

  1249. The

  1250. people in

  1251. Davidson,

  1252. the

  1253. people in

  1254. Crake,

  1255. the people

  1256. in

  1257. Keniston,

  1258. out on

  1259. the farm,

  1260. in town,

  1261. young,

  1262. old,

  1263. people in

  1264. the farm,

  1265. the people

  1266. who

  1267. have

  1268. good news

  1269. of God's

  1270. love and

  1271. rescue.

  1272. And the

  1273. climax of

  1274. that news

  1275. is the

  1276. cross.

  1277. We're

  1278. going to

  1279. take a few

  1280. minutes now

  1281. to remember

  1282. and to

  1283. thank God

  1284. for the

  1285. cross,

  1286. how he

  1287. used the

  1288. evil of

  1289. men,

  1290. done to

  1291. his

  1292. innocent

  1293. son to

  1294. forgive us

  1295. and to

  1296. restore us

  1297. to him.

  1298. So in

  1299. just a

  1300. moment,

  1301. we'll

  1302. pass out

  1303. the bread

  1304. and the

  1305. cup.

  1306. And if

  1307. you believe

  1308. in Jesus,

  1309. that he is

  1310. the Christ,

  1311. then of

  1312. course the

  1313. next step

  1314. for you is

  1315. to be

  1316. baptized in

  1317. his name.

  1318. But if

  1319. you believe

  1320. in Jesus

  1321. like we've

  1322. been talking

  1323. about,

  1324. then please

  1325. join with

  1326. us in

  1327. remembering

  1328. the body

  1329. and blood

  1330. which was

  1331. broken and

  1332. poured out

  1333. for our

  1334. salvation.

  1335. Let's take a

  1336. few minutes

  1337. now to

  1338. quietly pray

  1339. and to

  1340. reflect.

  1341. And then

  1342. we'll have

  1343. Dave and

  1344. Simon come

  1345. and serve

  1346. the elements.

  1347. We'll wait

  1348. until everybody

  1349. has been

  1350. served and

  1351. we'll give

  1352. thanks and

  1353. we'll eat and

  1354. drink all

  1355. together.

  1356. Let's do

  1357. that.
