  1. Alright, well we're continuing on with the story of Jesus in Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  2. Last week we reflected on those challenging words of Jesus about what's required to be a true follower of His.

  3. ! Today we're going to hear about one of the most spectacular things that ever happened with Jesus.

  4. I mean, if all we've already seen and heard already isn't spectacular enough, this one will top most of them.

  5. But before we get to that, there's just this one verse that we didn't get to last week.

  6. One thing that Jesus said as He was teaching the crowd that I just want to take a brief moment to look at together with you.

  7. Luke 9 verse 27.

    Luke 9:27

  8. Jesus said,

  9. Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.

  10. Many stumble over these words.

  11. What Jesus seems to be saying is that there are some there in the crowd who will see the kingdom of God before they die.

  12. But then as we heard a couple weeks ago, Jesus has told the twelve that the kingdom of God is going to unfold in a way that's contrary to the people's expectations.

  13. They're looking for that political, earthly rule right now.

  14. But Jesus has been telling His disciples that He must first suffer and be rejected and be killed.

  15. And on the third day, rise again.

  16. So there's this unexpected path to how God's Messiah will come to the throne of God's kingdom.

  17. It's going to happen through suffering and rejection and death.

  18. Rising from the dead.

  19. Ascending to the throne of heaven.

  20. And then returning to rule and to reign on an earthly throne.

  21. And this is where we stumble over these words of Jesus.

  22. Because based on these words, maybe like the people in Jesus' day,

  23. we're either looking for the wrong kind of kingdom,

  24. or we're looking for the fullness of God's kingdom in the lifetime of these people.

  25. As the world might read these words,

  26. they would look at this and maybe come to the conclusion that Jesus is a false prophet.

  27. He was killed.

  28. They would say He was rumored to have risen from the dead,

  29. and rumored to have been seen by His followers,

  30. and then He was never seen again.

  31. There was no kingdom of Jesus.

  32. And then not long after that,

  33. the Jews in the land were wiped out or scattered.

  34. That's how our world may look at these words.

  35. As a prophecy of Jesus that never came true.

  36. But it's because they were looking for the wrong kind of kingdom altogether.

  37. If we take Jesus' words seriously and believe them to be true, as they are,

  38. He must mean that the kingdom of God comes near

  39. and begins with power during the lives of these very people that He's speaking to.

  40. Not the full measure of the kingdom,

  41. but a good measure of the kingdom.

  42. Breaking into our world.

  43. A significant demonstration of Christ's power in the lives of people.

  44. And I think by the time we get to the end of Luke's gospel,

  45. if we haven't already said yes, that's what we're seeing,

  46. I think we'll see that yes, it is obvious.

  47. It is visible.

  48. God's kingdom has come with power.

  49. Enough that we can look back at these words and say,

  50. yes, we saw it.

  51. It came in our life, in the lifetimes of these people.

  52. Not the final fullness,

  53. but the breaking in,

  54. the first light,

  55. the dawn of it.

  56. And so we'll keep an eye out for that as we carry on with the story.

  57. Let's now go on to verse 28.

  58. After eight days,

  59. sorry, about eight days after Jesus said this,

  60. He took Peter, John, and James with Him

  61. and went up onto a mountain to pray.

  62. As he was praying,

  63. the appearance of his face changed

  64. and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.

  65. Two men,

  66. Moses and Elijah,

  67. appeared in glorious splendor,

  68. talking with Jesus.

  69. They spoke about his departure,

  70. which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

  71. Peter and his companions were very sleepy,

  72. but when they became fully awake,

  73. they saw his glory

  74. and the two men standing with him.

  75. As the men were leaving Jesus,

  76. Peter said to him,

  77. Master, it is good for us to be here.

  78. Let us put up three shelters,

  79. one for you,

  80. one for Moses,

  81. and one for Elijah.

  82. He did not know what he was saying.

  83. So this next spectacular thing that we just read

  84. happens about eight days after Jesus said what He did,

  85. what we just heard in verse 27.

  86. Jesus takes only three of the twelve disciples with Him,

  87. Peter, James, and John,

  88. and they hike up a mountain.

  89. The purpose of this little trip, Luke tells us,

  90. was to pray.

  91. With the crowds always following Jesus around,

  92. there were very few ways to get away from them

  93. for time to talk with God.

  94. One way was to get into a boat,

  95. as we've seen already,

  96. and another way was to start hiking up a mountain.

  97. And Luke's the only gospel writer

  98. who tells us that the purpose of this trip

  99. is to pray.

  100. And as we read this account,

  101. there's a very subtle hint here, I think,

  102. in the way Luke tells us.

  103. None of the other gospel writers

  104. have some of these details.

  105. We notice, in verse 29,

  106. that as Jesus was praying,

  107. the appearance of His face changed,

  108. and His clothes became

  109. as bright as a flash of lightning.

  110. And we'll talk about that transformation in a moment,

  111. but notice that it's as Jesus was praying

  112. that all this happened.

  113. As He was praying.

  114. Not as they were praying.

  115. As He was praying.

  116. And then we get this strange explanation

  117. that comes kind of right in the middle

  118. of this whole thing,

  119. in verse 32.

  120. Peter and his companions were very sleepy.

  121. But when they became fully awake,

  122. they saw His glory

  123. and the two men standing with Him.

  124. It seems as though He almost goes back

  125. and tells a little bit more fully

  126. of what was happening here.

  127. It would be unlikely

  128. that they would have fallen asleep

  129. in the midst of all this,

  130. as they saw Jesus

  131. transform before their very eyes.

  132. I think if we read it closely,

  133. Luke says that

  134. when they became fully awake,

  135. they saw His glory.

  136. The glory of Jesus.

  137. So, I'm thinking probably

  138. what's happened here,

  139. which only Luke records,

  140. is that

  141. they became drowsy

  142. and fell asleep

  143. while Jesus was praying.

  144. And that's actually not the first time.

  145. Or I should say,

  146. it's not the last time.

  147. If you know the story of Jesus,

  148. this is going to happen again.

  149. They fall asleep,

  150. probably while Jesus was praying,

  151. and then they sort of awaken

  152. from this

  153. to this sight of Jesus

  154. totally changed

  155. in His appearance.

  156. And whoa,

  157. there's two other guys

  158. with Him all of a sudden.

  159. Imagine this

  160. from their perspective.

  161. It's another one of those

  162. long prayers of Jesus.

  163. Has anyone ever drifted to sleep

  164. while someone else was praying?

  165. I can see some of you nodding.

  166. I'll be honest.

  167. I have.

  168. It happens to us.

  169. It happened back then, it seems.

  170. But then imagine this.

  171. All of a sudden,

  172. there's this bright light

  173. shining in your eyes,

  174. and you open them wider,

  175. and you're sort of

  176. remembering where you are

  177. and what's going on

  178. after you nodded off.

  179. And whoa,

  180. Peter,

  181. look,

  182. Jesus is shining.

  183. You can bet

  184. that the drowsiness

  185. just sort of disappeared

  186. at that moment.

  187. This was something

  188. they had never seen before.

  189. Luke says

  190. that the appearance

  191. of Jesus' face

  192. changed.

  193. Matthew,

  194. who was one of the twelve

  195. in his gospel,

  196. goes into a little more detail.

  197. In Matthew 17, verse 2,

    Matthew 17:2

  198. he says that

  199. Jesus' face

  200. shone

  201. like the sun.

  202. Think back to one

  203. of those moments

  204. where you've tried

  205. to look right at the sun.

  206. It's so bright,

  207. you just can't

  208. look at it directly

  209. for very long.

  210. That's what Jesus' face

  211. was like

  212. in this moment.

  213. Shining so bright,

  214. it was like the sun.

  215. And Luke says

  216. Jesus' clothes

  217. became as bright

  218. as a flash of lightning.

  219. Matthew says

  220. his clothes

  221. became as white

  222. as the light.

  223. Mark,

  224. in his gospel,

  225. says his clothes

  226. became dazzling white,

  227. whiter than anyone

  228. in the world

  229. could bleach them.

  230. It's hard to even

  231. imagine this,

  232. a sort of

  233. radiant

  234. and even

  235. blinding

  236. whiteness

  237. to his clothes.

  238. Like,

  239. what's going on here?

  240. Luke says

  241. after this

  242. in verse

  243. 32,

  244. and this is probably

  245. the best summary

  246. of it,

  247. when they became

  248. fully awake,

  249. they saw

  250. his glory.

  251. All this light,

  252. this radiance,

  253. this transformation

  254. of Jesus

  255. is them seeing

  256. the glory

  257. of Jesus.

  258. It's them seeing

  259. that Jesus

  260. is more

  261. than just a man.

  262. It's like a glimpse

  263. of his divine nature.

  264. Now,

  265. they probably

  266. weren't thinking

  267. about all

  268. these questions

  269. that I have

  270. in this moment,

  271. but I imagine

  272. them wondering

  273. about these things

  274. soon after.

  275. Like,

  276. Jesus,

  277. can you explain

  278. what just happened

  279. to you?

  280. What is this?

  281. What was that

  282. all about?

  283. Did you know

  284. that you were

  285. shining like

  286. a blinding light?

  287. Or is that

  288. just something

  289. that we were

  290. seeing?

  291. Did you do

  292. that to yourself?

  293. Or did that

  294. just happen

  295. to you?

  296. Can you

  297. control it?

  298. Is this

  299. something that

  300. often happens

  301. when you're

  302. alone with

  303. the Father?

  304. I mean,

  305. it must have

  306. just utterly

  307. flabbergasted

  308. them in those

  309. moments.

  310. They believed

  311. that he was

  312. the Son of God

  313. before this.

  314. We just heard

  315. Peter's confession,

  316. you are the

  317. Christ,

  318. you are God's

  319. Messiah,

  320. the Son of

  321. the Living God.

  322. But that was

  323. a statement

  324. of faith

  325. based on

  326. the things

  327. that they

  328. had seen

  329. Jesus do

  330. and the

  331. things they

  332. had heard

  333. him say.

  334. Outwardly,

  335. he was

  336. otherwise,

  337. he looked

  338. and acted

  339. like a normal

  340. man.

  341. he gets

  342. tired,

  343. he sleeps,

  344. he gets

  345. hungry,

  346. he eats.

  347. There was

  348. that time

  349. that he

  350. walked on

  351. the water,

  352. but,

  353. you know,

  354. here it's

  355. like they get

  356. a glimpse

  357. beneath the

  358. surface of

  359. what the

  360. Son of God

  361. really looks

  362. like.

  363. they see

  364. something of

  365. his divine

  366. nature,

  367. his glory,

  368. a glimpse

  369. of his

  370. radiance,

  371. a glimpse

  372. of who

  373. he really

  374. is,

  375. even before

  376. he became

  377. a man.

  378. It reminds

  379. me of what

  380. John,

  381. one of the

  382. three who

  383. witnessed this,

  384. wrote in his

  385. gospel at the

  386. beginning.

  387. In John

    John 1:14

  388. chapter 1

  389. verse 14,

  390. John wrote

  391. this,

  392. he said,

  393. the word

  394. became flesh

  395. and made

  396. his dwelling

  397. among us.

  398. We have

  399. seen his

  400. glory,

  401. the glory

  402. of the one

  403. and only

  404. Son who

  405. came from

  406. the Father,

  407. full of

  408. grace and

  409. truth.

  410. I wonder

  411. if John

  412. had this

  413. moment in

  414. his mind

  415. as he wrote

  416. those words.

  417. How do you

  418. think you

  419. would have

  420. reacted in

  421. this moment

  422. if you

  423. had been

  424. there?

  425. You open

  426. your eyes

  427. and all

  428. of a

  429. sudden

  430. you see

  431. Jesus

  432. shining

  433. like the

  434. sun.

  435. What would

  436. your response

  437. have been?

  438. This isn't

  439. even half

  440. of it yet.

  441. We're just

  442. getting started

  443. here.

  444. Not only

  445. did they

  446. see this

  447. glorious

  448. transformation

  449. of Jesus,

  450. suddenly

  451. there's two

  452. others with

  453. Jesus.

  454. Guys who

  455. didn't hike

  456. up the

  457. mountain

  458. with them

  459. are there.

  460. Bam!

  461. And they

  462. too, Luke

  463. tells us,

  464. had this

  465. glorious

  466. appearance.

  467. They appeared

  468. in glorious

  469. splendor.

  470. Luke says

  471. they were

  472. talking with

  473. Jesus.

  474. And they

  475. are Moses

  476. and Elijah.

  477. I don't

  478. know how

  479. they figured

  480. that out.

  481. It doesn't

  482. say.

  483. Did they

  484. overhear

  485. Jesus

  486. saying their

  487. names?

  488. Whatever the

  489. case, they

  490. figured out

  491. at some

  492. point that

  493. this is

  494. Moses and

  495. Elijah.

  496. Like Moses,

  497. the prophet

  498. that God

  499. used to

  500. lead the

  501. Israelites

  502. out of

  503. slavery in

  504. Egypt

  505. almost 1500

  506. years earlier.

  507. That's him

  508. right there.

  509. The guy who

  510. went up

  511. Mount Sinai

  512. and brought

  513. the Ten

  514. Commandments

  515. down is

  516. there talking

  517. with Jesus.

  518. And Elijah,

  519. one of the

  520. greatest

  521. prophets in

  522. Israel's

  523. history.

  524. The one

  525. who lived

  526. in the

  527. days of

  528. the wicked

  529. king Ahab

  530. and queen

  531. Jezebel.

  532. The one

  533. who called

  534. on God

  535. and there

  536. was drought

  537. in the

  538. land.

  539. And then

  540. who had

  541. that showdown

  542. with the

  543. prophets of

  544. Baal and

  545. called on

  546. God and

  547. God answered

  548. with fire.

  549. The same

  550. Elijah who

  551. did all

  552. kinds of

  553. wonderful

  554. miracles and

  555. then was

  556. taken up

  557. to heaven

  558. in a

  559. chariot of

  560. fire 900

  561. years-ish

  562. prior to

  563. this moment.

  564. There he

  565. was with

  566. Jesus.

  567. Luke tells

  568. us that

  569. Jesus is

  570. discussing

  571. with them

  572. about his

  573. departure

  574. which he

  575. was about

  576. to bring

  577. to fulfillment

  578. at Jerusalem.

  579. this was

  580. absolutely

  581. wild and

  582. amazing.

  583. I mean

  584. there's all

  585. kinds of

  586. things that

  587. we could

  588. talk about

  589. here.

  590. For

  591. starters

  592. we see

  593. that

  594. Moses

  595. a man

  596. who lived

  597. over a

  598. millennium

  599. prior to

  600. Jesus

  601. coming

  602. is alive.

  603. we read

  604. in the

  605. Old Testament

  606. about how

  607. he died

  608. before

  609. the

  610. Israelites

  611. entered the

  612. promised land

  613. but here

  614. he is

  615. he is

  616. alive

  617. and he

  618. exists in

  619. some sort

  620. of glorious

  621. state

  622. where he

  623. can simply

  624. appear

  625. and talk

  626. to Jesus

  627. and then

  628. disappear.

  629. this is a

  630. glimpse for

  631. Peter,

  632. James and

  633. John of

  634. someone

  635. actually

  636. having

  637. life

  638. after

  639. death.

  640. It's

  641. another

  642. confirmation

  643. that Jesus

  644. isn't making

  645. things up

  646. when he

  647. says to

  648. the Sadducees

  649. later on

  650. that God

  651. is still

  652. the God

  653. of Abraham

  654. Isaac

  655. and Jacob

  656. because he's

  657. not the God

  658. of the dead

  659. he's the God

  660. of the living.

  661. there really

  662. is a life

  663. with God

  664. after this

  665. one

  666. for those

  667. who have

  668. faith in

  669. him.

  670. Even

  671. before Jesus

  672. came

  673. God

  674. kept

  675. those

  676. who had

  677. faith

  678. in him.

  679. And then

  680. of course

  681. there's the

  682. questions

  683. that we

  684. have about

  685. this.

  686. You know

  687. why?

  688. Why does

  689. Moses and

  690. Elijah just

  691. show up

  692. and talk

  693. to him?

  694. Why do

  695. they talk

  696. to Jesus

  697. now?

  698. Is this

  699. a sign

  700. mainly for

  701. Peter and

  702. James and

  703. John?

  704. for their

  705. benefit?

  706. Or is

  707. this some

  708. kind of

  709. special gift

  710. of grace

  711. given to

  712. Moses and

  713. Elijah to

  714. talk with

  715. Jesus one

  716. last time

  717. before his

  718. departure?

  719. And what

  720. is this

  721. departure

  722. that's about

  723. to be fulfilled

  724. at Jerusalem?

  725. Is it his

  726. departure from

  727. his body

  728. by his

  729. spirit when

  730. he dies?

  731. Or is it

  732. his ascension

  733. to heaven

  734. afterwards?

  735. After he

  736. rises from

  737. the dead?

  738. Or is it

  739. all of

  740. that just

  741. kind of

  742. combined in

  743. one big

  744. moment?

  745. Moses and

  746. Elijah talk

  747. with Jesus

  748. and then

  749. they leave.

  750. But as

  751. they're about

  752. to leave,

  753. Peter interrupts.

  754. Verse 33,

  755. As the men

  756. were leaving

  757. Jesus,

  758. Peter said

  759. to him,

  760. Master,

  761. it's good

  762. for us to

  763. be here.

  764. Let's put

  765. up three

  766. shelters,

  767. one for

  768. you,

  769. one for

  770. Moses,

  771. and one

  772. for Elijah.

  773. He did

  774. not know

  775. what he

  776. was saying.

  777. There's a

  778. sort of

  779. mixture of

  780. confusion

  781. and fright

  782. in this

  783. moment,

  784. and of

  785. course,

  786. we just

  787. don't know

  788. what Peter

  789. was thinking

  790. here.

  791. Like,

  792. was he not

  793. wanting this

  794. moment to

  795. end?

  796. Was he not

  797. wanting them

  798. to leave?

  799. You know,

  800. maybe you

  801. can stay a

  802. little longer.

  803. Let's put

  804. up some

  805. tents and

  806. let's continue

  807. the conference

  808. tomorrow.

  809. One for

  810. each of you.

  811. We'll get

  812. a tent for

  813. each of you.

  814. But wait

  815. a second,

  816. I mean,

  817. do Moses

  818. and Elijah

  819. even need

  820. tents?

  821. Or could

  822. they just

  823. reappear tomorrow

  824. morning if

  825. this is going

  826. to go on?

  827. Are they

  828. even present

  829. in bodily

  830. form?

  831. We don't

  832. know what

  833. Peter was

  834. thinking.

  835. Luke says

  836. even Peter

  837. didn't know

  838. himself what

  839. he was

  840. saying.

  841. And then

  842. things get

  843. even more

  844. spectacular.

  845. While Peter's

  846. still going on

  847. about putting

  848. up the

  849. shelters,

  850. a cloud

  851. appeared

  852. and covered

  853. them.

  854. And they

  855. were afraid

  856. as they

  857. entered

  858. the cloud.

  859. This is

  860. fascinating.

  861. Let's start

  862. with that word

  863. covered.

  864. The cloud

  865. covered them.

  866. The word

  867. used here

  868. means to

  869. darken

  870. something.

  871. Like by

  872. getting in

  873. the way

  874. of the

  875. light.

  876. To

  877. darken

  878. something.

  879. To

  880. cover.

  881. usually

  882. that's

  883. what

  884. happens

  885. when a

  886. cloud

  887. comes

  888. between

  889. the sun

  890. and you.

  891. Casts a

  892. shadow.

  893. It darkens

  894. everything

  895. under it.

  896. But there

  897. wasn't a

  898. darkening

  899. from this

  900. cloud.

  901. Because as we

  902. read in

  903. Matthew,

  904. in his

  905. gospel,

  906. he tells us

  907. this was no

  908. typical cloud.

  909. He says

  910. this was a

  911. bright cloud.

  912. While he was

  913. still speaking,

  914. a bright

  915. cloud

  916. covered

  917. them.

  918. The word

  919. there means

  920. shining or

  921. radiant.

  922. And it

  923. seems to

  924. envelop

  925. Peter and

  926. James and

  927. John and

  928. Jesus

  929. on the

  930. mountain.

  931. And then all

  932. of a sudden

  933. they hear a

  934. voice come

  935. from the

  936. cloud.

  937. A voice

  938. came from

  939. the cloud

  940. saying,

  941. this is

  942. my son

  943. whom I

  944. have

  945. chosen.

  946. Listen to

  947. him.

  948. This is

  949. my son

  950. whom I

  951. have

  952. chosen.

  953. Listen to

  954. him.

  955. Now there

  956. were some

  957. other words

  958. there.

  959. If we look

  960. at the

  961. other accounts,

  962. Matthew and

  963. Mark,

  964. God also

  965. in this

  966. moment says

  967. that Jesus

  968. is his

  969. beloved son

  970. and that

  971. he's

  972. pleased

  973. with him.

  974. Luke doesn't

  975. have those

  976. words.

  977. He has

  978. something that

  979. the other

  980. two don't

  981. have.

  982. That he

  983. is God's

  984. chosen

  985. one.

  986. this is

  987. my son

  988. whom I

  989. have

  990. chosen.

  991. This is

  992. really

  993. important.

  994. It

  995. reminds us

  996. of the

  997. words of

  998. Isaiah

  999. spoken

  1000. long

  1001. before

  1002. this.

  1003. Isaiah

    Isaiah 42:1

  1004. 42

  1005. verse 1.

  1006. Here

  1007. is my

  1008. servant

  1009. whom I

  1010. uphold,

  1011. my

  1012. chosen

  1013. one

  1014. in whom

  1015. I

  1016. delight.

  1017. I

  1018. will

  1019. put

  1020. my

  1021. spirit

  1022. on

  1023. him

  1024. and

  1025. he

  1026. will

  1027. bring

  1028. justice

  1029. to

  1030. the

  1031. nations.

  1032. So

  1033. God is

  1034. making it

  1035. crystal

  1036. clear.

  1037. Yes,

  1038. this

  1039. is

  1040. my

  1041. son.

  1042. Do

  1043. not

  1044. take

  1045. his

  1046. words

  1047. lightly.

  1048. Listen

  1049. to

  1050. him.

  1051. When

  1052. the voice

  1053. had spoken,

  1054. they

  1055. found that

  1056. Jesus

  1057. was

  1058. alone.

  1059. So

  1060. just as

  1061. suddenly

  1062. as they

  1063. awoke to

  1064. all of

  1065. this,

  1066. it was

  1067. over.

  1068. It was

  1069. just

  1070. Jesus

  1071. and

  1072. them

  1073. again.

  1074. No

  1075. sign of

  1076. Moses,

  1077. no

  1078. sign of

  1079. Elijah.

  1080. Matthew

  1081. gives us

  1082. the most

  1083. detail in

  1084. his

  1085. gospel of

  1086. how this

  1087. thing

  1088. ended.

  1089. When

  1090. they hear

  1091. the voice

  1092. of God

  1093. speak,

  1094. Matthew

  1095. says,

  1096. when the

  1097. disciples

  1098. heard this,

  1099. they fell

  1100. face down

  1101. to the

  1102. ground,

  1103. terrified.

  1104. But

  1105. Jesus

  1106. came and

  1107. touched

  1108. them.

  1109. Get up,

  1110. he said.

  1111. Don't be

  1112. afraid.

  1113. When they

  1114. looked up,

  1115. they saw

  1116. no one

  1117. except

  1118. Jesus.

  1119. What an

  1120. awesome

  1121. moment this

  1122. must have

  1123. been.

  1124. I mean,

  1125. can you

  1126. imagine

  1127. this?

  1128. They're

  1129. afraid as

  1130. this bright

  1131. cloud covers

  1132. them.

  1133. They hear

  1134. God speak

  1135. to them

  1136. from the

  1137. cloud.

  1138. They hit

  1139. the ground

  1140. face down,

  1141. terrified,

  1142. and then the

  1143. next thing

  1144. they feel

  1145. is Jesus'

  1146. hand,

  1147. and they

  1148. hear his

  1149. words of

  1150. assurance.

  1151. They look

  1152. up and

  1153. they see

  1154. no one

  1155. except

  1156. Jesus,

  1157. probably

  1158. returned to

  1159. his normal

  1160. appearance.

  1161. What just

  1162. happened?

  1163. imagine

  1164. them.

  1165. John,

  1166. did you

  1167. just see,

  1168. did you

  1169. hear what

  1170. I heard?

  1171. Where did

  1172. Moses and

  1173. Elijah go?

  1174. What an

  1175. awesome thing

  1176. to have

  1177. witnessed,

  1178. right from

  1179. the beginning

  1180. to the

  1181. end.

  1182. Matthew

  1183. tells us

  1184. that Jesus

  1185. forbids them

  1186. to tell this

  1187. to anyone.

  1188. that would

  1189. be a hard

  1190. one.

  1191. Don't tell

  1192. anyone what

  1193. you have

  1194. seen until

  1195. the Son of

  1196. Man has

  1197. been raised

  1198. from the

  1199. dead.

  1200. Mark

  1201. tells us

  1202. that these

  1203. three men

  1204. later discuss,

  1205. well what does

  1206. that even

  1207. mean, to

  1208. rise from

  1209. the dead?

  1210. They didn't

  1211. understand what

  1212. was going to

  1213. happen.

  1214. And Luke

  1215. concludes the

  1216. whole story

  1217. with this.

  1218. The disciples

  1219. kept this to

  1220. themselves and

  1221. did not

  1222. tell anyone

  1223. at that

  1224. time or

  1225. in those

  1226. days what

  1227. they had

  1228. seen.

  1229. Well

  1230. eventually

  1231. Jesus did

  1232. rise from

  1233. the dead.

  1234. And Peter

  1235. did have

  1236. opportunity to

  1237. speak and

  1238. to say what

  1239. he saw.

  1240. And he

  1241. actually wrote

  1242. down a

  1243. little testimony

  1244. of what he

  1245. saw that day

  1246. in one of

  1247. his letters,

  1248. 2 Peter 1

    2 Peter 1:16–18

  1249. verses 16

  1250. to 18.

  1251. This is how

  1252. Peter describes

  1253. that moment

  1254. in his own

  1255. words.

  1256. He says,

  1257. For we did

  1258. not follow

  1259. cleverly devised

  1260. stories when

  1261. we told you

  1262. about the

  1263. coming of

  1264. our Lord

  1265. Jesus Christ

  1266. in power,

  1267. but we

  1268. were eyewitnesses

  1269. of his

  1270. majesty.

  1271. He received

  1272. honor and

  1273. glory from

  1274. God the

  1275. Father when

  1276. the voice

  1277. came to

  1278. him from

  1279. the majestic

  1280. glory,

  1281. saying,

  1282. this is

  1283. my son

  1284. whom I

  1285. love.

  1286. With him

  1287. I am

  1288. well pleased.

  1289. We

  1290. ourselves

  1291. heard this

  1292. voice that

  1293. came from

  1294. heaven when

  1295. we were

  1296. with him

  1297. on the

  1298. sacred

  1299. mountain.

  1300. That's how

  1301. Peter describes

  1302. this moment

  1303. with Jesus.

  1304. We were

  1305. eyewitnesses

  1306. of his

  1307. majesty.

  1308. How does

  1309. God want

  1310. us to

  1311. respond to

  1312. all this

  1313. today?

  1314. Well, I

  1315. think the

  1316. first thing

  1317. that comes

  1318. to my

  1319. mind is

  1320. that Jesus

  1321. is worthy

  1322. of worship.

  1323. He is

  1324. the radiant,

  1325. glorious,

  1326. divine Son

  1327. of God.

  1328. And what

  1329. Peter and

  1330. James and

  1331. John saw

  1332. that day,

  1333. when he

  1334. was

  1335. transformed

  1336. and

  1337. shone,

  1338. that's

  1339. what we're

  1340. going to

  1341. see when

  1342. we next

  1343. see him.

  1344. That's how

  1345. he will

  1346. appear.

  1347. We will

  1348. fall to

  1349. our faces

  1350. before him.

  1351. Once we

  1352. find the

  1353. words to

  1354. say,

  1355. we will

  1356. praise him,

  1357. we will

  1358. proclaim his

  1359. majesty and

  1360. his glory,

  1361. just like

  1362. Peter did.

  1363. And we'll

  1364. do that like

  1365. never before.

  1366. But then

  1367. I got

  1368. thinking,

  1369. we don't

  1370. have to

  1371. wait until

  1372. that day

  1373. to worship

  1374. him like

  1375. that.

  1376. Because right

  1377. now,

  1378. he has

  1379. that glory.

  1380. He is

  1381. seated on

  1382. heaven's

  1383. throne in

  1384. glory.

  1385. We can

  1386. worship him

  1387. like that

  1388. every day.

  1389. especially

  1390. when we

  1391. gather together

  1392. like this.

  1393. We can

  1394. sing to

  1395. him,

  1396. we can

  1397. praise him

  1398. as if

  1399. that's who

  1400. he is

  1401. because that

  1402. is who

  1403. he is.

  1404. He is

  1405. the

  1406. glorious

  1407. son of

  1408. God.

  1409. I also

  1410. got thinking

  1411. about Moses

  1412. and Elijah.

  1413. There really

  1414. is life

  1415. after death.

  1416. death is

  1417. not the

  1418. end.

  1419. They were

  1420. there with

  1421. him.

  1422. 1500 and

  1423. 900 years

  1424. after they

  1425. walked the

  1426. earth.

  1427. They were

  1428. there.

  1429. We can

  1430. have life

  1431. with Jesus

  1432. too.

  1433. After we

  1434. die.

  1435. That's his

  1436. promise.

  1437. If we

  1438. repent and

  1439. believe in

  1440. him.

  1441. finally,

  1442. what did

  1443. God say

  1444. to Peter

  1445. and James

  1446. and John

  1447. about Jesus?

  1448. Specifically,

  1449. what did he

  1450. want them

  1451. to do in

  1452. response to

  1453. all of

  1454. this?

  1455. I think

  1456. God would

  1457. have us

  1458. respond in

  1459. the same

  1460. way.

  1461. This is

  1462. my son

  1463. whom I

  1464. have chosen.

  1465. Listen

  1466. to him.

  1467. if there's

  1468. only one

  1469. thing that

  1470. we do,

  1471. this one

  1472. thing will

  1473. put us on

  1474. the right

  1475. path.

  1476. To listen

  1477. closely and

  1478. carefully to

  1479. Jesus,

  1480. to everything

  1481. he said,

  1482. to take

  1483. his words

  1484. deep into

  1485. our hearts.

  1486. This is

  1487. God's

  1488. will for

  1489. us,

  1490. for our

  1491. lives,

  1492. to listen

  1493. to his

  1494. son.

  1495. So,

  1496. four things.

  1497. We can

  1498. worship

  1499. Jesus.

  1500. He is

  1501. the radiant

  1502. and glorious

  1503. divine

  1504. son of

  1505. God.

  1506. And we

  1507. don't have

  1508. to wait

  1509. until heaven

  1510. to do

  1511. it.

  1512. We can

  1513. do it

  1514. now.

  1515. He has

  1516. that glory

  1517. they saw

  1518. right now.

  1519. And

  1520. we can

  1521. rejoice in

  1522. the reality

  1523. that death

  1524. is not

  1525. the end

  1526. for all

  1527. of us

  1528. who have

  1529. faith in

  1530. him.

  1531. And most

  1532. of all,

  1533. God's

  1534. will for

  1535. us is

  1536. that we

  1537. listen to

  1538. Jesus.

  1539. That we

  1540. take his

  1541. words in

  1542. deeply,

  1543. that we

  1544. build our

  1545. lives on

  1546. his words.

  1547. And one

  1548. day soon,

  1549. we read in

  1550. the Bible

  1551. that he

  1552. will bust

  1553. through the

  1554. clouds with

  1555. that same

  1556. glory.

  1557. And are

  1558. we living

  1559. in light

  1560. of that

  1561. day?

  1562. let's

  1563. pray.

  1564. Father in

  1565. heaven,

  1566. I pray

  1567. that we

  1568. would all

  1569. be deeply

  1570. stirred by

  1571. this

  1572. moment on

  1573. the mountain.

  1574. Even though

  1575. we weren't

  1576. there,

  1577. may we

  1578. trust the

  1579. account that

  1580. we have

  1581. that you've

  1582. given us

  1583. of what

  1584. happened.

  1585. May we

  1586. stand in

  1587. awe

  1588. of your

  1589. glory.

  1590. May it

  1591. reorient

  1592. our hearts

  1593. and our

  1594. minds.

  1595. May it

  1596. change our

  1597. priorities.

  1598. May we

  1599. truly live

  1600. in worship

  1601. of you.

  1602. For you

  1603. are worthy

  1604. and your

  1605. son,

  1606. for he

  1607. is worthy.

  1608. Capture

  1609. our hearts,

  1610. we pray.

  1611. Amen.
