  1. All right, well as we come to the word this morning, last Sunday just as a reminder we heard about what happened with Jesus up on the mountain.

  2. ! Witnessed by Peter, James, and John. They saw the glory of Jesus. They were enveloped by that bright cloud from which God spoke and gave testimony to his son.

  3. And then Jesus ordered Peter, James, and John not to say anything about what they saw until after he had risen from the dead.

  4. Well, the next day they made their way back down the mountain only to find that Jesus' disciples, the rest of them, other than Peter, James, and John, were surrounded by this great crowd of people.

  5. We pick up the story in Luke chapter 9, verse 37.

    Luke 9:37

  6. The next day when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.

  7. A man in the crowd called out,

  8. Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.

  9. A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams.

  10. It throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth.

  11. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him.

  12. I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.

  13. Mark, in his gospel, actually gives the most detail about what happened here, including the moment when Jesus and the three who are with him first arrive.

  14. Listen to how Mark tells us in Mark chapter 9, verse 14.

    Mark 9:14

  15. When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.

  16. As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

  17. What are you arguing with them about?

  18. Jesus asked.

  19. And a man in the crowd answered,

  20. Teacher, I brought you my son.

  21. You can almost picture this.

  22. There's this commotion happening in the crowd.

  23. Jesus' other nine disciples are right in the middle of this.

  24. And then the teachers of the law are there too.

  25. And they're arguing with Jesus' disciples.

  26. And then there's this one man here.

  27. And all the people are standing around and kind of caught up in this moment.

  28. And then all of a sudden, Jesus approaches with Peter, James, and John.

  29. And this feeling of excitement just sweeps over all of them.

  30. And they run to him.

  31. And I can't help but wonder what they're thinking in this moment as Jesus arrives.

  32. Perhaps for the nine disciples that Jesus had left behind,

  33. you know, I imagine them feeling utterly relieved.

  34. Like, oh, here comes Jesus.

  35. He's going to sort all this out.

  36. He always knows just what to say to the teachers of the law.

  37. And he's going to know what to do about this man's son as well.

  38. And then for the people, perhaps, look, there's Jesus.

  39. Let's see what he has to say about all this.

  40. Maybe he can help this man's son.

  41. I don't know.

  42. Maybe some of them even thought that Jesus might meet his match with this particular spirit.

  43. The disciples couldn't do anything about it.

  44. And then for this man, the father of the afflicted son.

  45. You know, I imagine that he had this deep mixture of disappointment.

  46. That these disciples of Jesus couldn't help.

  47. But maybe there was also a spark of hope with Jesus' arrival that maybe he can do what his apprentices can't.

  48. And Jesus walks up to his disciples.

  49. At this point, as we just heard from Luke, the father comes before Jesus.

  50. Matthew tells us that he actually knelt before Jesus.

  51. And he begins to explain to Jesus what this is all about.

  52. There's this spirit.

  53. And it seizes my son.

  54. And when it happens, he suddenly screams.

  55. And the spirit throws him into convulsions.

  56. And he foams at the mouth.

  57. Mark includes even more details.

  58. This spirit has robbed him of speech.

  59. And when it seizes him, it throws him to the ground.

  60. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid.

  61. Also in Mark, a little bit later in the conversation,

  62. the man, the father says,

  63. it has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him.

  64. The father says that this spirit scarcely ever leaves him.

  65. And it's destroying him.

  66. Some translations say it severely bruises him.

  67. It's heart-wrenching even to think about this happening to a young boy.

  68. One of the things that many have noticed here

  69. is that some of the symptoms that this boy is experiencing

  70. are the same as what people with epilepsy experience

  71. when they have a seizure.

  72. And I think we should just talk about that for a minute.

  73. Matthew in his gospel actually uses the ancient term for epilepsy here.

  74. Quite literally, he was moonstruck.

  75. That was their word for it.

  76. Moonstruck.

  77. That's what we get the term lunatic from.

  78. And back then, it's because they associated that behavior,

  79. the seizures,

  80. with sort of the transcendent powers of the moon

  81. in their understanding of things.

  82. So they had this very specific word to describe these symptoms.

  83. And even today, we know that people with epilepsy

  84. sometimes have grand mal seizures,

  85. which leads to convulsions on the ground

  86. and even foaming at the mouth.

  87. And the foaming at the mouth

  88. is caused by the clamping of the jaw muscles,

  89. which makes it impossible to swallow normally.

  90. And then the rapid breathing and the shaking

  91. lead to saliva frothing or foaming in the mouth.

  92. But we also notice that all three gospels

  93. are quite clear that what this boy is experiencing

  94. is caused by this evil spirit,

  95. this demon.

  96. Now that might make us wonder

  97. if there's a connection between evil spirits

  98. and certain disabilities

  99. or health conditions.

  100. As Mark says in his gospel,

  101. the spirit also robbed him of his speech.

  102. It made him mute.

  103. And so naturally, we may wonder

  104. how many severe disabilities or disorders

  105. are caused by evil spirits.

  106. And I think we need to be very careful here.

  107. First, there's nothing here to say

  108. that all mute people

  109. or all people who have epilepsy

  110. are possessed or demonized.

  111. But second, there is evidence here

  112. that demon possession can result

  113. in severe bodily harm or disability.

  114. So we don't want to deny the effects

  115. of the spirit altogether

  116. because it clearly can happen

  117. and did in this boy's life.

  118. Neither do we want to take it

  119. to the other extreme

  120. and assume that all or even most disabilities

  121. are caused by evil spirits.

  122. If we look at some of the other accounts

  123. of evil spirits in the New Testament,

  124. demon possession,

  125. one thing that seems obvious

  126. is that when a person is possessed

  127. by an evil spirit,

  128. they do seem to lose some measure of control

  129. over their own bodies

  130. to the spirit.

  131. The spirit seems to be able

  132. to make them do or say things

  133. that they wouldn't otherwise do or say.

  134. And so did this boy have epilepsy

  135. or was it just the demon

  136. having its way with him?

  137. We don't know exactly.

  138. Could it have been both?

  139. One of the disturbing things mentioned here

  140. that really points to the spirit

  141. as an explanation for all this

  142. is in Mark's gospel,

  143. Mark 9.22,

  144. where Mark tells us

  145. what the father said,

  146. it has often thrown him

  147. into fire or water

  148. to kill him.

  149. So this is a deliberateness.

  150. If he just had epilepsy,

  151. you know,

  152. we wouldn't see that.

  153. But this is clearly

  154. more than just epilepsy.

  155. One of the worst things

  156. I think though we can do

  157. from this account

  158. is to begin assuming

  159. that most disabilities

  160. or illnesses

  161. that we see in people

  162. are demon caused.

  163. And then even worse,

  164. to try and cast demons

  165. out of people with disabilities

  166. who aren't possessed.

  167. Sadly, this has happened

  168. far too often

  169. by people

  170. in the name of Christ.

  171. There's more than one reason

  172. why a person

  173. may come to have

  174. a serious illness

  175. or disability.

  176. And nowhere does Jesus teach

  177. that it's always

  178. an evil spirit.

  179. Though we see an account

  180. such as this

  181. that it could be.

  182. Well, after explaining

  183. the boy's condition

  184. to Jesus,

  185. we hear the father

  186. say these words

  187. back in Luke 9 verse 40.

    Luke 9:40

  188. I begged your disciples

  189. to drive it out,

  190. but they could not.

  191. And here's probably

  192. where the argument

  193. and the commotion began.

  194. This raises questions

  195. for us,

  196. doesn't it?

  197. Why couldn't the disciples

  198. drive out the demon?

  199. At the beginning

  200. of this very chapter

  201. in Luke 9,

  202. the first verse,

  203. we heard about

  204. how Jesus gave

  205. the twelve

  206. power and authority

  207. to drive out

  208. all demons

  209. and to cure diseases

  210. and he sent them out.

  211. And so what's going on here?

  212. Why are they not

  213. able to do

  214. what they had been

  215. able to do before?

  216. Did Jesus just give them

  217. power and authority

  218. to do those things

  219. for the duration

  220. of that missions trip

  221. and now that they've returned

  222. they no longer have it?

  223. I imagine the disciples

  224. themselves being

  225. somewhat baffled

  226. and even embarrassed

  227. by this.

  228. Like it worked before.

  229. Why isn't it working

  230. this time?

  231. I'm doing,

  232. I'm saying the same

  233. things I did before,

  234. but it isn't working.

  235. How come it isn't working?

  236. And the teachers

  237. of the law

  238. are probably

  239. all over this.

  240. Finally,

  241. something that has

  242. Jesus' name on it

  243. that seems to have failed.

  244. And then the father.

  245. Did he feel

  246. just deeply

  247. disappointed

  248. and disillusioned

  249. that they couldn't

  250. drive it out?

  251. Well,

  252. most of these questions

  253. aren't really answered here,

  254. but we do get

  255. some ideas

  256. and some hints

  257. as things unfold.

  258. At this point,

  259. Jesus says something

  260. quite unexpected.

  261. You unbelieving

  262. and perverse generation,

  263. Jesus replied.

  264. How long

  265. shall I stay

  266. with you

  267. and put up

  268. with you?

  269. Bring your son

  270. here.

  271. That's not

  272. what we're used

  273. to hearing

  274. from Jesus

  275. in moments

  276. like this.

  277. Jesus usually

  278. seems to meet

  279. this kind

  280. of human desperation

  281. with compassion

  282. and tenderness.

  283. But instead,

  284. Jesus seems

  285. to rebuke

  286. everyone

  287. with a tone

  288. of frustration.

  289. I imagine

  290. different ones

  291. in the audience,

  292. the crowd,

  293. the disciples,

  294. the man,

  295. all wondering,

  296. is he talking

  297. about me?

  298. Is it because

  299. we couldn't

  300. cast out the demon?

  301. Who is this

  302. pointed at,

  303. these words?

  304. Well,

  305. in Jesus'

  306. own words,

  307. he points

  308. it at this

  309. generation,

  310. which seems

  311. to include

  312. all of them.

  313. He says

  314. they are

  315. unbelieving

  316. and perverse.

  317. Now,

  318. nowadays,

  319. perverse

  320. has taken

  321. on more

  322. of the meaning

  323. of sexual

  324. impropriety.

  325. Jesus is not

  326. talking about

  327. that,

  328. but about

  329. general

  330. depravity,

  331. corruptness,

  332. twistedness

  333. of the people.

  334. And this

  335. is a lament.

  336. There's a sense

  337. of holy

  338. frustration here

  339. as Jesus,

  340. the very

  341. Son of God,

  342. comes face

  343. to face

  344. with people

  345. who are just

  346. bent away

  347. from God

  348. and who

  349. utterly lack

  350. faith in him.

  351. And this

  352. lack of faith,

  353. as we'll see

  354. in a moment,

  355. is present

  356. both in

  357. Jesus'

  358. disciples

  359. and in

  360. the father

  361. of this

  362. boy.

  363. So,

  364. Jesus summons

  365. the boy

  366. and as the

  367. boy is coming,

  368. the demon

  369. inside of him

  370. does what

  371. it has often

  372. done.

  373. Back in

  374. Luke 9,

    Luke 9:42

  375. verse 42,

  376. even while

  377. the boy

  378. was coming,

  379. the demon

  380. threw him

  381. to the ground

  382. in a

  383. convulsion.

  384. Or if we

  385. flip over to

  386. Mark and

  387. read it from

  388. his words,

  389. so they

  390. brought the

  391. boy to

  392. him.

  393. When the

  394. spirit saw

  395. Jesus,

  396. it immediately

  397. threw the

  398. boy into

  399. a convulsion.

  400. He fell to

  401. the ground

  402. and rolled

  403. around,

  404. foaming at

  405. the mouth.

  406. Jesus

  407. asked the

  408. boy's father,

  409. how long

  410. has he been

  411. like this?

  412. from

  413. childhood,

  414. he answered.

  415. It has

  416. often thrown

  417. him into

  418. fire or

  419. water to

  420. kill him.

  421. But if

  422. you can do

  423. anything,

  424. take pity

  425. on us

  426. and help

  427. us.

  428. If you

  429. can,

  430. said Jesus,

  431. everything

  432. is possible

  433. for one

  434. who believes.

  435. God

  436. is

  437. so right

  438. here we

  439. see that

  440. there is

  441. the lack

  442. of faith,

  443. there is a

  444. faith struggle

  445. of some

  446. kind in

  447. the boy's

  448. father.

  449. I mean,

  450. we might

  451. blame the

  452. disciples who

  453. tried to

  454. cast it

  455. out earlier

  456. and failed

  457. for his

  458. doubt,

  459. but at the

  460. end of the

  461. day,

  462. his faith

  463. needed to

  464. be in

  465. Jesus.

  466. It needed

  467. to be in

  468. God.

  469. And he

  470. does express

  471. a lack

  472. of faith

  473. as to

  474. whether

  475. Jesus is

  476. able to

  477. do anything

  478. for his

  479. son.

  480. And Jesus

  481. basically says,

  482. of course it

  483. can happen

  484. for anyone

  485. who believes.

  486. Everything

  487. is possible

  488. for one

  489. who believes.

  490. And then we

  491. come to these

  492. favorite words

  493. of mine in

  494. Mark's

  495. gospel.

  496. Immediately

  497. the boy's

  498. father exclaimed,

  499. I do

  500. believe.

  501. Help me

  502. overcome

  503. my unbelief.

  504. I do

  505. believe.

  506. Help me

  507. overcome

  508. my

  509. unbelief.

  510. Sometimes

  511. we recognize

  512. our own

  513. lack of

  514. faith,

  515. but we

  516. feel

  517. powerless

  518. to remedy

  519. it.

  520. We believe

  521. to some

  522. degree,

  523. but what

  524. can we do

  525. about the

  526. doubt that's

  527. still there

  528. in our

  529. heart?

  530. what can

  531. we do

  532. except cry

  533. out to

  534. Jesus

  535. for help

  536. to believe

  537. as we

  538. ought to

  539. with a

  540. full faith?

  541. I'm

  542. convinced

  543. that this

  544. is one

  545. of those

  546. prayers

  547. that God

  548. loves to

  549. hear.

  550. do you

  551. struggle to

  552. believe?

  553. Or to

  554. take Jesus

  555. at his

  556. word?

  557. These

  558. words,

  559. I think,

  560. are for

  561. us in

  562. those

  563. moments.

  564. Jesus,

  565. I do

  566. believe.

  567. Help me

  568. overcome

  569. my

  570. unbelief.

  571. sometimes

  572. all we

  573. see is

  574. the grim

  575. and

  576. seemingly

  577. hopeless

  578. realities

  579. of sin

  580. and

  581. brokenness

  582. all around

  583. us.

  584. We see

  585. it in

  586. the lives

  587. of the

  588. people we

  589. love.

  590. We see

  591. it in

  592. our

  593. community,

  594. in our

  595. country,

  596. in our

  597. world,

  598. and it's

  599. overwhelming.

  600. And we

  601. lose sight

  602. of God

  603. and his

  604. goodness

  605. and his

  606. power.

  607. Well,

  608. when Jesus

  609. saw that a

  610. crowd was

  611. running to

  612. the scene,

  613. he rebuked

  614. the impure

  615. spirit.

  616. You deaf

  617. and mute

  618. spirit,

  619. he said,

  620. I command

  621. you,

  622. come out

  623. of him

  624. and never

  625. enter him

  626. again.

  627. The

  628. spirit

  629. shrieked,

  630. convulsed

  631. him violently,

  632. and came

  633. out.

  634. The boy

  635. looked so

  636. much like a

  637. corpse that

  638. many said,

  639. he's dead.

  640. But Jesus

  641. took him

  642. by the

  643. hand and

  644. lifted him

  645. to his

  646. feet,

  647. and he

  648. stood up.

  649. If we go

  650. back to

  651. Luke's

  652. gospel,

  653. we read

  654. that Jesus

  655. rebuked the

  656. impure spirit,

  657. healed the

  658. boy,

  659. and gave

  660. him back

  661. to his

  662. father.

  663. father.

  664. And they

  665. were all

  666. amazed at

  667. the

  668. greatness

  669. of God.

  670. There was

  671. an

  672. astonishment

  673. that just

  674. swept over

  675. all of

  676. them.

  677. They had

  678. just

  679. witnessed

  680. something

  681. of the

  682. majesty,

  683. of the

  684. awesomeness

  685. of God.

  686. His

  687. power was

  688. unleashed

  689. when Jesus

  690. spoke.

  691. And this

  692. deeply

  693. entrenched

  694. and stubborn

  695. spirit came

  696. out at the

  697. command of

  698. Jesus like

  699. it had no

  700. choice in

  701. the matter.

  702. One minute

  703. this poor

  704. boy was

  705. writhing on

  706. the ground

  707. in pain,

  708. and the

  709. next moment

  710. he was

  711. back to

  712. normal,

  713. as good

  714. as new,

  715. standing

  716. with his

  717. dad.

  718. Amazing.

  719. Well,

  720. Luke doesn't

  721. mention this

  722. in his

  723. gospel,

  724. but Matthew

  725. and Mark

  726. do.

  727. Later,

  728. after this

  729. is over,

  730. the disciples

  731. asked Jesus

  732. privately about

  733. why they

  734. couldn't cast

  735. out the

  736. demon.

  737. Matthew 17

    Matthew 17:19

  738. verse 19.

  739. Then the

  740. disciples came

  741. to Jesus in

  742. private and

  743. asked,

  744. why couldn't

  745. we drive

  746. it out?

  747. Jesus replied,

  748. because you

  749. have so

  750. little faith.

  751. Truly,

  752. I tell you,

  753. if you have

  754. faith as

  755. small as a

  756. mustard seed,

  757. you can say

  758. to this

  759. mountain,

  760. move from

  761. here to

  762. there,

  763. and it

  764. will move.

  765. Nothing will

  766. be impossible

  767. for you.

  768. I bring in

  769. this part of

  770. Matthew because

  771. it answers that

  772. question we

  773. asked earlier

  774. about why

  775. they couldn't

  776. cast it

  777. out.

  778. And it

  779. seems it

  780. wasn't because

  781. they didn't

  782. have the

  783. authority and

  784. power to

  785. do it,

  786. but because

  787. they lacked

  788. faith.

  789. because you

  790. have so

  791. little faith,

  792. said Jesus.

  793. Were they

  794. trying to

  795. invoke the

  796. name of

  797. Jesus to

  798. cast the

  799. spirit out,

  800. but at the

  801. same time

  802. not inwardly

  803. believing that

  804. it would

  805. work?

  806. There was a

  807. lack of

  808. faith in

  809. these disciples

  810. of Jesus.

  811. and I

  812. think it's

  813. a lesson

  814. for us

  815. as well.

  816. Not that

  817. we've all

  818. been given

  819. power and

  820. authority to

  821. heal and

  822. cast out

  823. demons,

  824. but how

  825. often do we

  826. invoke the

  827. name of

  828. Jesus and

  829. claim the

  830. name of

  831. Jesus and

  832. yet don't

  833. really believe

  834. and have

  835. faith in

  836. him as we

  837. should?

  838. God.

  839. Maybe we're

  840. coming at

  841. an issue

  842. or problem

  843. in our

  844. lives with

  845. everything that

  846. we've got at

  847. our disposal

  848. except we're

  849. just not

  850. really trusting

  851. God or

  852. looking to

  853. him for

  854. the solution.

  855. We're

  856. meeting it

  857. with our

  858. own strength

  859. and our

  860. own resources,

  861. everything we

  862. have, but

  863. deep down

  864. are we

  865. doubting that

  866. God would

  867. really care

  868. to intervene?

  869. They

  870. couldn't

  871. cast it

  872. out because

  873. they lacked

  874. faith.

  875. And then if

  876. we flip over

  877. to Mark's

  878. account, we

  879. read a little

  880. bit more

  881. about this,

  882. Mark 9,

  883. 28.

  884. After Jesus

  885. had gone

  886. indoors,

  887. his disciples

  888. asked him

  889. privately,

  890. why couldn't

  891. we drive it

  892. out?

  893. He replied,

  894. this kind

  895. can come

  896. out only

  897. by prayer.

  898. Now, there's

  899. lots of

  900. discussion about

  901. this answer.

  902. Is Jesus

  903. saying that

  904. there's

  905. different

  906. kinds of

  907. demons,

  908. some stronger

  909. or more

  910. resistant than

  911. others.

  912. Some of the

  913. disciples can

  914. simply cast

  915. out with

  916. their words

  917. like Jesus

  918. did and

  919. others that

  920. require prayer.

  921. A lot of

  922. people have

  923. proposed all

  924. kinds of

  925. things from

  926. these words

  927. and some

  928. things are

  929. more wild

  930. than others.

  931. But a lot

  932. of this is

  933. just speculation

  934. and guessing.

  935. I think the

  936. most important

  937. part of this

  938. statement of

  939. Jesus that we

  940. don't want to

  941. miss is that

  942. prayer is

  943. required to

  944. drive demons

  945. out.

  946. And this

  947. says even

  948. more about

  949. where the

  950. disciples failed

  951. in the first

  952. place,

  953. doesn't it?

  954. Did they

  955. not pray and

  956. ask God to

  957. remove it?

  958. They invoked

  959. the name of

  960. Jesus, it

  961. seems, but

  962. not in a

  963. prayerful

  964. dependence on

  965. God kind

  966. of way.

  967. how often

  968. do we do

  969. the same

  970. thing?

  971. Do we go

  972. through the

  973. motions,

  974. say the

  975. words,

  976. but is

  977. our heart

  978. actually

  979. engaged?

  980. Are we

  981. really looking

  982. to God

  983. and talking

  984. to God,

  985. asking for

  986. His help

  987. because we

  988. know we

  989. need it

  990. in a

  991. situation?

  992. are we

  993. believing that

  994. He has

  995. what we

  996. need to

  997. deal with

  998. what He's

  999. put before

  1000. us?

  1001. I find

  1002. myself

  1003. convicted,

  1004. as I read

  1005. all this,

  1006. of my own

  1007. unbelief and

  1008. lack of

  1009. faith,

  1010. of my own

  1011. forgetfulness

  1012. to pray and

  1013. to talk to

  1014. God about the

  1015. things in front

  1016. of me.

  1017. how often

  1018. do I worry

  1019. about things

  1020. and forget?

  1021. How often

  1022. do I look at

  1023. my own

  1024. troubles as

  1025. insurmountable

  1026. until I'm

  1027. past them?

  1028. How often

  1029. do I look at

  1030. the lives of

  1031. people I love

  1032. and resign

  1033. myself that

  1034. there's not

  1035. likely to be

  1036. a breakthrough

  1037. or change

  1038. for them?

  1039. Maybe I've

  1040. prayed for them

  1041. in the past,

  1042. but is there

  1043. any point to

  1044. praying for

  1045. them again?

  1046. about the

  1047. same thing?

  1048. That's why

  1049. these words

  1050. of the

  1051. Father and

  1052. Mark are

  1053. so precious

  1054. to me.

  1055. I believe.

  1056. Help me

  1057. overcome my

  1058. unbelief.

  1059. I can't think

  1060. of a better

  1061. response to

  1062. all of this

  1063. than that

  1064. prayer.

  1065. So let's

  1066. pray it

  1067. together.

  1068. Father in

  1069. heaven,

  1070. Holy Spirit,

  1071. God,

  1072. we

  1073. forgive us

  1074. our

  1075. Lord.

  1076. Would you

  1077. forgive us

  1078. for our

  1079. lack of

  1080. faith,

  1081. all the

  1082. ways it

  1083. shows up

  1084. in our

  1085. lives

  1086. this past

  1087. week.

  1088. Forgive us

  1089. for the

  1090. unbelief in

  1091. our hearts.

  1092. We believe,

  1093. God,

  1094. we thank you

  1095. for the

  1096. love.

  1097. Help us in

  1098. our

  1099. unbelief.

  1100. Help us with

  1101. our doubts.

  1102. grace.

  1103. We thank you

  1104. for another

  1105. glimpse of

  1106. your greatness

  1107. and your

  1108. awesome power

  1109. and your

  1110. love here in

  1111. these words.

  1112. And we thank

  1113. you that your

  1114. name and

  1115. your power

  1116. is unrivaled.

  1117. We ask that

  1118. you would

  1119. increase our

  1120. faith,

  1121. Lord.

  1122. Refine it.

  1123. Make it

  1124. grow.

  1125. And we want

  1126. that for your

  1127. praise and

  1128. your glory.

  1129. Amen.
