  1. Well, last Sunday we heard about how Jesus began to shift his attention towards Jerusalem and the people living in the towns and cities around it.

  2. We heard about how Jesus was not welcomed by the people of one town in Samaria.

  3. And we heard Jesus talk about the commitment required to be one of his disciples.

  4. We're going to pick up the story here in Luke chapter 10, starting in verse 1.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  5. Let me just read the first number of verses here for us.

  6. For the worker deserves his wages.

  7. Do not move around from house to house.

  8. When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.

  9. Heal the sick who are there and tell them the kingdom of God has come near to you.

  10. But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say,

  11. Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.

  12. Yet be sure of this, the kingdom of God has come near.

  13. So Jesus sends out this large group of disciples to the towns and places that he is soon to visit.

  14. And as we talked about last week, the bulk of Jesus' ministry has been focused up in the north, in Galilee.

  15. But now he has his focus set on Jerusalem, where he will end up.

  16. And on the people in the towns and the cities that are around Jerusalem.

  17. And Jesus intends to visit many of these towns as part of his journey towards Jerusalem.

  18. And so these guys that he's sending out are kind of, in a sense, preparing the way for him.

  19. They're not going ahead just to find places for Jesus to stay, though.

  20. This is more than just logistics.

  21. These guys are coming to each of these towns to begin the work of Jesus there, on his behalf.

  22. If you were here on January 18th, you might feel some deja vu as we read about this ministry trip.

  23. That's because this is the second ministry trip where Jesus sends guys out to visit towns.

  24. The first one we read about just in the previous chapter, Luke chapter 9.

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  25. And there's some major similarities between these two trips.

  26. In both cases, the guys that Jesus sends out are to travel light, taking almost nothing with them.

  27. In both cases, they're to rely on God to provide for their needs as they go from town to town.

  28. In both cases, they're given authority by Jesus to cast out demons and to heal people who are sick.

  29. In both of these trips, they're to proclaim the message of the kingdom of God.

  30. And Jesus gives specific instructions about what to do if the people don't respond well or if they reject them.

  31. But there's also some differences between these two trips.

  32. And that's what we'll focus on this morning with this second trip.

  33. We've already mentioned the difference in location.

  34. One in the north, one in the south.

  35. But there's also the difference of who goes on this trip.

  36. Who is sent.

  37. On the first trip, Jesus sent the twelve apostles.

  38. But on this second trip, we read that he is sending 72 others.

  39. And that word, others, quite specific in the original language.

  40. It means different than the ones already mentioned.

  41. And so these 72, it seems, did not include the twelve.

  42. The Lord appointed 72 others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.

  43. Now some of you might be staring at your Bible and wondering why the number is not 72 and is 70.

  44. This is one of those places.

  45. You might even have a footnote that explains at the bottom of the page.

  46. Some manuscripts have 70 or some have 72.

  47. Basically, we don't have the original document that Luke penned.

  48. We have copies that were made of that.

  49. And our earliest copy is too fragmented to even read it at this place.

  50. And the copies that we have later, well, we see both of these readings in them.

  51. And so some, where's along the line, somebody either left out the word two after 70.

  52. Or maybe added it in accidentally as he was looking down at the wrong line.

  53. Because the number two is mentioned a couple times here in this verse.

  54. Scholars and people who do these kinds of things, they look at the evidence.

  55. They try to weigh it, all the different manuscript copies that we have.

  56. And they're not sure which is the right number.

  57. This shouldn't worry us too much.

  58. We believe that the true number was on Luke's page as he wrote it down.

  59. And it was either 70 or 72.

  60. But some things have been lost to us 2,000 years later.

  61. We should also maybe note that this is why our modern English translations are updated from time to time.

  62. Committees of scholars sit down as new manuscripts are discovered.

  63. And they continue to catalog them.

  64. Sometimes we're able to settle these questions with confidence.

  65. And look back on them and yeah, we know for sure this is the number that it was.

  66. But these variants are relatively few.

  67. And they have very little bearing on the overall meaning of the text.

  68. In the places where they occur.

  69. Either way, this is a big difference from the previous time that Jesus sent men out.

  70. The first trip was 12.

  71. This one is about 70.

  72. And different men.

  73. So put your imagination cap on here for a minute.

  74. Can you imagine what it would be like if within a relatively short period of time,

  75. two guys sent from the same man started showing up in cities and towns all over our province?

  76. Traveling in pairs.

  77. Traveling in pairs.

  78. This means that once they branched off down the roads,

  79. there would be about 35 different locations all receiving this message of the kingdom

  80. and seeing miracles being done in Jesus' name.

  81. All on the same day.

  82. 35 different locations across the region.

  83. All witnessing healings and hearing two guys preaching about the kingdom of God in Jesus' name

  84. and how it has come near.

  85. This would have stirred the whole nation.

  86. No wonder the religious leaders of the Jews were worried that everyone would believe in Jesus

  87. if they let Jesus go on like this.

  88. No wonder they cried out in frustration while the crowds listened to Jesus with delight in the temple courts saying,

  89. See?

  90. This is getting us nowhere.

  91. The whole world has gone after him.

  92. Jesus is stirring the nation in a very short period of time.

  93. His good news of the kingdom of God is making its way into every home.

  94. The people are talking at the dinner table about the miracles that they have witnessed.

  95. And this is happening all across the nation.

  96. As Jesus sends them out on this trip,

  97. we notice that some of his instructions are different than we heard earlier in chapter 9.

  98. It's possible that Jesus said the same kinds of things on both occasions,

  99. but Luke gives us a little bit more here with the sending of the 72.

  100. Jesus, we notice, uses this analogy of bringing in the harvest.

  101. In verse 2,

  102. The harvest is plentiful, he says,

  103. but the workers are few.

  104. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore,

  105. to send out workers into his harvest field.

  106. So Jesus seems to be saying here that many will respond to the message.

  107. Many will believe in Jesus in these towns

  108. when these two guys come to each town to preach.

  109. There's about to be a great multiplication of the followers of Jesus.

  110. The harvest is plentiful.

  111. And it seems from Jesus' words that there's just not going to be enough of them

  112. to bring in the harvest.

  113. Think of all the questions that people might ask

  114. as these two guys show up.

  115. But there's just two of them,

  116. and they're being probably swarmed by a whole bunch of people.

  117. He tells these 70 to pray

  118. and ask God to send out more workers.

  119. Then Jesus gives another analogy,

  120. telling about the danger that they will face.

  121. He says,

  122. Go, I'm sending you out like lambs among wolves.

  123. So many will believe,

  124. but many will have the opposite reaction.

  125. Not just indifference,

  126. but opposition.

  127. These guys will roll into town,

  128. and some will be ready to tear them apart

  129. as they leave.

  130. These disciples will arrive in peace

  131. with a message of peace.

  132. With no weapons of any kind,

  133. they will be like lambs,

  134. and many will meet them with mocking

  135. and insults

  136. and even threats.

  137. Maybe this is part of why Jesus instructed them

  138. to travel light.

  139. They needed to be ready to leave

  140. if the welcome wears out

  141. when the wolves gather round.

  142. We notice in verse 4

  143. that they're not to take a purse

  144. or bag or sandals.

  145. These instructions are similar

  146. to the ones given to the 12 in chapter 9.

  147. They were to take no money,

  148. no backpack,

  149. no extra footwear.

  150. And here Jesus says,

  151. Do not greet anyone on the road.

  152. We might think that's kind of odd.

  153. This is not a command to be unfriendly

  154. or to ignore people.

  155. But often,

  156. when we greet someone,

  157. what happens?

  158. We start talking.

  159. It can often turn into a long conversation.

  160. That one thing needed at the grocery store

  161. turns into an hour away

  162. from the hungry family

  163. that's waiting at home for it.

  164. Jesus doesn't want them

  165. to stop and talk on the roads

  166. because this mission is urgent.

  167. He wants them to do their talking,

  168. their preaching

  169. in the towns,

  170. in the hearing of everyone.

  171. He's basically telling them

  172. to keep on moving,

  173. stay focused on the mission.

  174. Just as with the first trip,

  175. they're to stay at only one house.

  176. Traveling preachers of other varieties

  177. would often go house to house

  178. and try to get as much

  179. from the people as they could.

  180. And Jesus wants his men

  181. to stand apart from them.

  182. This isn't for personal gain.

  183. He does allow them, however,

  184. to receive hospitality

  185. and food and lodging

  186. as their wages

  187. for the work that they're doing

  188. from one house in the town.

  189. And just as with the previous trip,

  190. they are to proclaim

  191. the message of the kingdom of God

  192. that Jesus has been preaching.

  193. Specifically,

  194. that the kingdom of God

  195. has come near.

  196. In other words,

  197. the things which God promised

  198. long ago to our forefathers

  199. are being fulfilled today.

  200. We come in the name of Jesus.

  201. And they were to heal the sick

  202. in each town.

  203. The miracles of healing

  204. in Jesus' name

  205. served to confirm the message

  206. that they preached.

  207. This message comes with

  208. the power of God.

  209. And not only did they heal,

  210. but they also cast demons out.

  211. We read about that in verse 17,

  212. which we won't get to today,

  213. but you can glance down there

  214. and see about that.

  215. Jesus also gives them

  216. a fuller explanation

  217. in this sending moment

  218. than the previous trip

  219. if the town rejects them.

  220. We heard in the previous time

  221. they're to shake the dust

  222. off their feet.

  223. This time we read

  224. it's the same sort of thing.

  225. When you enter a town

  226. and are not welcomed,

  227. go into its streets

  228. and say,

  229. even the dust of your town

  230. we wipe from our feet

  231. as a warning to you.

  232. Yet be sure of this,

  233. the kingdom of God

  234. has come near.

  235. The shaking of the dust,

  236. if you weren't here

  237. in the previous message,

  238. was an act of completely

  239. disassociating oneself

  240. from the people of that town.

  241. It was like saying,

  242. then I will have no part of you.

  243. Not even a little bit.

  244. And again,

  245. this is not a vindictive thing

  246. or a thing done in frustration

  247. by the apostles

  248. or an attempt to try

  249. to get the last word

  250. or to insult.

  251. Jesus is the one

  252. telling his messengers

  253. to say this

  254. if they are not welcomed.

  255. And they represent

  256. Jesus himself.

  257. They have been sent

  258. by him.

  259. And therefore,

  260. if Jesus commands them

  261. to do that,

  262. it's really Jesus saying

  263. to the people of that town,

  264. since you will not

  265. listen to me

  266. and repent,

  267. I cannot claim you

  268. as my own.

  269. And you cannot claim me

  270. as your own.

  271. There is now

  272. a complete separation

  273. between us.

  274. I withdraw my messengers

  275. and I leave you

  276. to face God's judgment

  277. without me.

  278. Now that's a very

  279. sobering thing.

  280. But Jesus makes it clear

  281. here in verse 16.

  282. Whoever listens to you

  283. listens to me.

  284. Whoever rejects you

  285. rejects me.

  286. But whoever rejects me

  287. rejects him

  288. who sent me.

  289. So,

  290. rejecting any of these

  291. pairs of guys

  292. when they come to town

  293. is a rejection

  294. of Jesus.

  295. Even more than that,

  296. it is a rejection

  297. of God himself

  298. who sent Jesus.

  299. This is their chance

  300. to turn to God

  301. and to be made

  302. right with him.

  303. And Jesus wants

  304. every town

  305. who rejects him

  306. to know that.

  307. This is it.

  308. And Jesus explains

  309. here

  310. in great detail

  311. what will be

  312. for those towns,

  313. those people

  314. who reject him.

  315. There will be

  316. a greater punishment

  317. on the day of judgment,

  318. he says,

  319. than there will be

  320. for some of the

  321. wicked cities

  322. in ancient history.

  323. Look at verse 12.

  324. Jesus says,

  325. I tell you,

  326. it will be more

  327. bearable on that day

  328. for Sodom

  329. than for that town.

  330. Now,

  331. these are shocking words.

  332. But they help us

  333. realize the seriousness

  334. of this moment

  335. for all the people

  336. living in these towns

  337. back then.

  338. This was it.

  339. This was their opportunity

  340. to hear the good news

  341. of God

  342. and to repent

  343. and believe.

  344. This was their chance

  345. to be saved

  346. from the punishment

  347. deserved

  348. for their sins.

  349. Sodom, of course,

  350. was known

  351. for its terrible wickedness.

  352. You could read about that

  353. in Genesis.

  354. It was destroyed

  355. by fire from heaven.

  356. And yet,

  357. Jesus says

  358. that the people

  359. of Sodom

  360. will fare better

  361. at the judgment

  362. than the towns

  363. that rejected him.

  364. The ancient cities

  365. of Tyre

  366. and Sidon

  367. were also

  368. wicked cities

  369. known for

  370. their evil deeds.

  371. And Jesus says this.

  372. He says,

  373. Woe to you,

  374. Chorazin,

  375. verse 13.

  376. Woe to you,

  377. Bethsaida.

  378. Those are both

  379. towns in Galilee.

  380. For if the miracles

  381. that were performed

  382. in you

  383. had been performed

  384. in Tyre and Sidon,

  385. they would have

  386. repented long ago

  387. sitting in sackcloth

  388. and ashes.

  389. But it will be

  390. more bearable

  391. for Tyre and Sidon

  392. at the judgment

  393. than for you.

  394. These are shocking words.

  395. He's basically saying

  396. that the people

  397. of Tyre and Sidon,

  398. they would have

  399. repented

  400. if they witnessed

  401. the miracles

  402. that Jesus did

  403. in Bethsaida

  404. and Chorazin.

  405. They had more,

  406. in a sense,

  407. spiritual discernment

  408. in their day.

  409. This truly was

  410. a generation

  411. more

  412. unbelieving

  413. and corrupt

  414. than previous generations.

  415. And then comes

  416. the hardest

  417. and most stinging

  418. rebuke of all.

  419. These are some hard words.

  420. Verse 15.

  421. Jesus says,

  422. And you,

  423. Capernaum,

  424. will you be lifted

  425. to the heavens?

  426. No.

  427. You will go down

  428. to Hades.

  429. Capernaum was a place

  430. Jesus lived for a while.

  431. It was his hometown

  432. for a part of his

  433. time here on earth.

  434. It was the place

  435. where Peter was from,

  436. where his mother-in-law

  437. who fell ill

  438. was healed.

  439. It was that fishing town

  440. on the shore of Galilee.

  441. And it was the place

  442. where we read about

  443. in all the Gospels.

  444. Jesus did countless

  445. miracles there.

  446. Healings of all kinds.

  447. Every kind of illness,

  448. disease,

  449. disability.

  450. Many evil spirits

  451. were driven out of people

  452. there in Capernaum.

  453. And all these people

  454. saw it.

  455. And yet Jesus says,

  456. Even after witnessing

  457. all that,

  458. you will go down

  459. to Hades.

  460. to hell.

  461. Why?

  462. Because just having

  463. Jesus live among you

  464. isn't enough.

  465. Having Jesus

  466. preach in your streets

  467. isn't enough.

  468. Having him perform

  469. many miracles

  470. among you

  471. isn't enough.

  472. You must repent.

  473. You must turn back

  474. to God.

  475. You must welcome

  476. Jesus

  477. and believe

  478. the message

  479. that he brings

  480. because he is sent

  481. from God.

  482. Though Jesus

  483. lived there

  484. and did all those

  485. wonderful things

  486. there in Capernaum,

  487. they rejected Jesus

  488. on the whole.

  489. And Jesus says,

  490. they will go down

  491. to Hades.

  492. One commentary

  493. I think explains

  494. some of this

  495. very well.

  496. Cities that reject

  497. these messengers

  498. will have a more

  499. severe judgment

  500. because more

  501. and greater

  502. revelation

  503. has come to them

  504. making their sin

  505. worse.

  506. They witnessed

  507. with their own eyes

  508. the miracles

  509. that Jesus

  510. and these apostles

  511. did and yet

  512. they still rejected him.

  513. And so Jesus says

  514. that when the day

  515. of judgment comes

  516. they will be judged

  517. appropriately.

  518. They will get

  519. the punishment

  520. reserved

  521. for those

  522. who blatantly

  523. and defiantly

  524. push God's

  525. Son away.

  526. And again,

  527. this is not

  528. Jesus being

  529. vindictive

  530. by any means.

  531. This is God

  532. giving

  533. what is deserved.

  534. True

  535. justice.

  536. Jesus.

  537. Well,

  538. how did this

  539. ministry trip

  540. go

  541. for these

  542. 70 guys?

  543. We're going to

  544. look at that

  545. next week.

  546. Jesus actually

  547. debriefs the trip

  548. with them

  549. and there's

  550. conversation

  551. about it.

  552. For today

  553. though,

  554. let's just

  555. think about

  556. what some

  557. of these

  558. things that

  559. we've heard

  560. how this

  561. applies to us.

  562. When it

  563. comes to this

  564. passage,

  565. probably the

  566. first place

  567. we go in

  568. our minds

  569. is how

  570. we should

  571. be like

  572. these

  573. apostles

  574. and go

  575. out and

  576. share the

  577. good news

  578. of the

  579. kingdom.

  580. The harvest

  581. is plentiful

  582. but the

  583. workers are

  584. few

  585. is the

  586. classic

  587. Bible verse

  588. used to

  589. call people

  590. to participate

  591. in missionary

  592. work.

  593. Others,

  594. as they look

  595. at these

  596. verses,

  597. see a

  598. pattern to

  599. follow in

  600. going from

  601. place to

  602. place,

  603. sometimes even

  604. in pairs

  605. to preach

  606. the gospel.

  607. And there's

  608. many questions

  609. stirred up

  610. by this

  611. passage.

  612. Is the

  613. harvest still

  614. plentiful

  615. today?

  616. What about

  617. all those

  618. missionaries

  619. that have

  620. gone out

  621. and preached

  622. for years

  623. with very

  624. little response?

  625. What about

  626. all the times

  627. that we've

  628. shared with

  629. friends and

  630. neighbors and

  631. co-workers but

  632. they don't

  633. seem to

  634. care?

  635. Is the

  636. harvest still

  637. plentiful

  638. today?

  639. One thing

  640. that

  641. probably most

  642. agree on

  643. is that

  644. the workers

  645. are still

  646. few.

  647. What does

  648. Jesus want

  649. us to do

  650. with this

  651. passage?

  652. Did he

  653. want it to

  654. become the

  655. template or

  656. the pattern

  657. for how we

  658. reach out

  659. and do

  660. ministry in

  661. our world

  662. today?

  663. Does he

  664. want us to

  665. go out

  666. two by

  667. two?

  668. Does he

  669. want us to

  670. travel light

  671. going from

  672. place to

  673. place and

  674. only staying

  675. at one

  676. house?

  677. Or are

  678. those

  679. instructions

  680. just for

  681. this time

  682. for these

  683. particular

  684. men and

  685. this

  686. particular

  687. trip?

  688. I wonder

  689. if we get

  690. so focused

  691. on the

  692. apostles and

  693. what they

  694. did and

  695. whether we

  696. should be

  697. doing what

  698. they did

  699. that we

  700. miss the

  701. main truth

  702. of the

  703. whole

  704. moment.

  705. Isn't the

  706. main truth

  707. of this

  708. moment in

  709. the story

  710. of Jesus

  711. that the

  712. king has

  713. come,

  714. that his

  715. kingdom is

  716. near,

  717. that salvation

  718. and forgiveness

  719. of sins is

  720. offered to

  721. those who

  722. repent and

  723. believe God's

  724. good news.

  725. And yet the

  726. sobering truth

  727. of this passage

  728. is that while

  729. many accepted

  730. Jesus,

  731. many flat

  732. out rejected

  733. him.

  734. We see those

  735. two opposite

  736. responses in

  737. the towns of

  738. Galilee and in

  739. Judah.

  740. Some welcomed

  741. him.

  742. They welcomed

  743. the men that

  744. he sent.

  745. Others rejected

  746. him, didn't

  747. even let him

  748. come into the

  749. town.

  750. We have that

  751. same choice

  752. before us,

  753. each one of

  754. us.

  755. We can

  756. welcome Jesus

  757. and listen

  758. to him

  759. or we

  760. can push

  761. him away.

  762. But Jesus

  763. wants us to

  764. know that if

  765. we reject

  766. him, we

  767. reject God

  768. who sent

  769. him.

  770. him.

  771. And so I

  772. think the

  773. big question

  774. that this

  775. passage really

  776. leads us to

  777. in this moment

  778. in the story

  779. is what is

  780. your response

  781. to Jesus?

  782. As his

  783. words come

  784. to the door

  785. of your

  786. heart,

  787. what is your

  788. response to

  789. him?

  790. Have you

  791. opened the

  792. door of your

  793. heart to

  794. Jesus?

  795. Have you

  796. welcomed him

  797. in?

  798. Do you

  799. accept even

  800. his difficult

  801. words about

  802. you?

  803. About how

  804. we all have

  805. sinned against

  806. God?

  807. Do you

  808. accept his

  809. words about

  810. how you need

  811. to turn back

  812. to God and

  813. seek his

  814. forgiveness?

  815. Do you

  816. believe Jesus'

  817. message of

  818. the kingdom

  819. that it's

  820. near,

  821. that it's

  822. coming?

  823. Do you

  824. believe Jesus'

  825. words about

  826. hell?

  827. And how

  828. those who

  829. reject him

  830. will go

  831. there?

  832. What is your

  833. response to

  834. Jesus?

  835. For others,

  836. the big

  837. question of

  838. this passage

  839. is not

  840. whether we

  841. should do

  842. as the

  843. apostles did,

  844. but maybe

  845. the question

  846. is how

  847. can a

  848. loving God

  849. bring judgment

  850. on people

  851. and punish

  852. them with

  853. hell?

  854. That word,

  855. that gets

  856. to us.

  857. I read an

  858. article earlier

  859. this week about

  860. how some have

  861. embraced an

  862. alternative,

  863. progressive

  864. Christianity,

  865. and the

  866. author of that

  867. article said

  868. that the

  869. critical issue

  870. is how we

  871. define love.

  872. He said

  873. progressive

  874. Christians tend

  875. to hear the

  876. word love

  877. and define it

  878. primarily as

  879. compassion,

  880. empathy,

  881. and understanding,

  882. which then

  883. becomes

  884. affirmation,

  885. tolerance,

  886. and acceptance.

  887. But he

  888. says by that

  889. definition,

  890. any moral

  891. boundary imposed

  892. on somebody

  893. starts to

  894. feel

  895. unloving.

  896. He says

  897. that's not

  898. the biblical

  899. definition of

  900. love.

  901. The biblical

  902. definition of

  903. love is more

  904. than just an

  905. emotion.

  906. It's in the

  907. words of

  908. Aquinas,

  909. a conscious

  910. decision to

  911. will the good

  912. of the

  913. other,

  914. which sometimes

  915. means saying

  916. the hard

  917. thing and

  918. not the

  919. comfortable

  920. thing.

  921. For example,

  922. no one would

  923. look at an

  924. 80-pound

  925. anorexic girl

  926. who believes

  927. she's overweight

  928. and say the

  929. loving thing is

  930. to affirm

  931. that.

  932. We all

  933. understand that

  934. sometimes the

  935. most loving

  936. thing that you

  937. can do is to

  938. refuse to

  939. affirm what

  940. someone genuinely

  941. believes about

  942. themselves,

  943. because affirming

  944. that might

  945. destroy them.

  946. He says

  947. anyone who's

  948. loved an

  949. addict knows

  950. that removing

  951. every boundary

  952. doesn't set

  953. someone free.

  954. It just

  955. removes the

  956. only things

  957. that might

  958. have saved

  959. them.

  960. It's a

  961. prison with

  962. no walls,

  963. a place where

  964. you can wander

  965. anywhere but

  966. no one can

  967. ever tell you

  968. you've gone

  969. the wrong

  970. way.

  971. Well, I

  972. think those

  973. words are

  974. very thought

  975. provoking.

  976. Progressive

  977. Christians are

  978. right that

  979. love is

  980. compassion and

  981. it is empathy

  982. and it is

  983. understanding.

  984. But real

  985. love is more.

  986. It has those

  987. things but real

  988. love also

  989. strongly desires

  990. the good of

  991. the other.

  992. So much that

  993. it's willing to

  994. speak the hard

  995. but needed

  996. truth in order

  997. to save the

  998. other or spare

  999. them from harm.

  1000. the reality

  1001. of our lives

  1002. as human

  1003. beings is that

  1004. we have all

  1005. sinned against

  1006. God.

  1007. We have all

  1008. become corrupt

  1009. and bent

  1010. and broken

  1011. by sin

  1012. and God

  1013. is perfectly

  1014. good and

  1015. righteous and

  1016. just and he

  1017. because he is

  1018. those things

  1019. must give us

  1020. what we deserve.

  1021. If he didn't

  1022. he would be

  1023. corrupt.

  1024. In order to

  1025. be completely

  1026. good you

  1027. must love

  1028. what is good

  1029. and you

  1030. must hate

  1031. what is evil.

  1032. You must

  1033. oppose what

  1034. is evil.

  1035. God is

  1036. completely

  1037. good and

  1038. we by our

  1039. sins have

  1040. become not

  1041. good.

  1042. We have

  1043. become evil

  1044. sinners and

  1045. so we are

  1046. deserving of

  1047. punishment.

  1048. That's part of

  1049. the message of

  1050. Christ too.

  1051. And yet

  1052. God's mercy

  1053. and love for

  1054. us is so

  1055. great that he

  1056. wants none of

  1057. us to get what

  1058. we deserve from

  1059. him.

  1060. He sent Jesus

  1061. down into our

  1062. world to save

  1063. us.

  1064. Down into our

  1065. world to live

  1066. among us.

  1067. To take the

  1068. punishment that

  1069. we deserve

  1070. upon himself

  1071. so that

  1072. justice could

  1073. be done for

  1074. our sins

  1075. without us

  1076. facing it

  1077. ourselves.

  1078. But to

  1079. receive this

  1080. gift of

  1081. grace we

  1082. must do as

  1083. Jesus said

  1084. and repent.

  1085. We must

  1086. welcome him.

  1087. We must

  1088. listen to his

  1089. words.

  1090. We must turn

  1091. to God and

  1092. seek his

  1093. forgiveness.

  1094. We must

  1095. acknowledge our

  1096. sins to him.

  1097. And so

  1098. Jesus coming

  1099. and sending

  1100. his apostles

  1101. through the

  1102. land with

  1103. this message

  1104. of good

  1105. news.

  1106. Even with

  1107. those words

  1108. of warning

  1109. for those

  1110. who reject

  1111. that is

  1112. the most

  1113. loving thing

  1114. that God

  1115. can do.

  1116. He is

  1117. refusing to

  1118. affirm what

  1119. we genuinely

  1120. believe about

  1121. ourselves

  1122. which is that

  1123. we can be

  1124. okay if we

  1125. ignore God

  1126. and just keep

  1127. on sinning.

  1128. He's refusing

  1129. to affirm what

  1130. we genuinely

  1131. believe about

  1132. ourselves because

  1133. affirming that

  1134. would lead

  1135. to our

  1136. destruction.

  1137. Real love

  1138. speaks the

  1139. truth even

  1140. when it's

  1141. not what

  1142. we want to

  1143. hear.

  1144. And Jesus

  1145. always did

  1146. that because

  1147. he really

  1148. truly loves

  1149. us.

  1150. And so it

  1151. pushes us

  1152. back to that

  1153. first question.

  1154. What is your

  1155. response to

  1156. Jesus?

  1157. Welcome

  1158. rejection.

  1159. Welcome

  1160. to the

  1161. Lord.

  1162. Or rejection.

  1163. Let's pray.

  1164. Lord, these are

  1165. not the words

  1166. that we like

  1167. to hear.

  1168. Some of us

  1169. may even feel

  1170. embarrassed to

  1171. hear some of

  1172. these words in

  1173. public spoken

  1174. aloud.

  1175. But these

  1176. are your words

  1177. to us

  1178. through your

  1179. son who

  1180. you sent.

  1181. and I pray

  1182. that we

  1183. would take

  1184. them to

  1185. heart and

  1186. that you

  1187. would make

  1188. us first

  1189. of all stop

  1190. and ask that

  1191. question to

  1192. ourselves before

  1193. you of where

  1194. we stand with

  1195. you.

  1196. May every one

  1197. of us bow

  1198. before you,

  1199. acknowledge the

  1200. sins that we

  1201. have done,

  1202. not just once

  1203. but continually,

  1204. and may we

  1205. follow you.

  1206. May we

  1207. believe in

  1208. your son.

  1209. And we

  1210. ask too that

  1211. you would

  1212. make us wise

  1213. with these

  1214. words,

  1215. Lord,

  1216. so that as

  1217. we look out

  1218. at the

  1219. world around

  1220. us and

  1221. our

  1222. relationships,

  1223. our friends,

  1224. our family

  1225. who don't

  1226. know you,

  1227. make us

  1228. wise.

  1229. Teach us

  1230. about how

  1231. we can

  1232. relate to

  1233. them.

  1234. Give us

  1235. courage,

  1236. give us

  1237. boldness,

  1238. help us not

  1239. to affirm

  1240. them and

  1241. they're walking

  1242. away from

  1243. you.

  1244. Give us

  1245. what we

  1246. need to

  1247. be salt

  1248. and light

  1249. and to

  1250. speak the

  1251. truth in

  1252. love.

  1253. We ask

  1254. for this

  1255. in your

  1256. name.

  1257. Amen.
