  1. Alright, well this morning we're continuing our way through Luke. Luke's Gospel, the story of Jesus.

  2. And we're in the Gospel of Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  3. So, just as a reminder, the last two things that we heard were the parable of the Good Samaritan that Jesus told to the religious lawyer.

  4. And we heard about this visit of Jesus to Mary and Martha's house.

  5. Both of these incidents had to do with relationship with God and relationship with Jesus.

  6. Well, this morning we get to continue on with that theme.

  7. Because what follows in Luke's Gospel is all about that.

  8. Let me just read our verses for us in Luke chapter 11, verse 1 to 4.

    Luke 11:1–4

  9. One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.

  10. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him,

  11. Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.

  12. He said to them,

  13. When you pray, say,

  14. Father,

  15. hallowed be your name.

  16. Your kingdom come.

  17. Give us each day

  18. our daily bread.

  19. Forgive us our sins.

  20. For we also forgive everyone

  21. who sins against us.

  22. And lead us not

  23. into temptation.

  24. This prayer is very familiar.

  25. Even for some who don't attend church regularly,

  26. they may know the words of this prayer.

  27. Maybe they were taught it as a child

  28. or remember hearing it in church

  29. as they attended with a parent or grandparent.

  30. As we look at this prayer in Luke's Gospel,

  31. maybe one of the first things that we notice

  32. is that there seem to be some words

  33. or phrases missing from it.

  34. And why is that?

  35. Well,

  36. we have to notice the setting.

  37. Go back up to verse 1.

  38. Luke tells us that Jesus was praying

  39. in a certain place.

  40. And when he finished praying,

  41. one of his disciples said this to him,

  42. Lord, teach us to pray.

  43. Just as John taught his disciples.

  44. That would be John the Baptist,

  45. John the Baptizer.

  46. This is the occasion that gave rise

  47. to Jesus' teaching on prayer.

  48. So Jesus himself was praying

  49. and his disciples maybe were watching this

  50. or perhaps even overheard

  51. some of what he was saying.

  52. And then they make this request.

  53. Teach us to pray

  54. like you do.

  55. But there's actually another occasion

  56. on which Jesus taught about prayer.

  57. And we read about it in a different Gospel.

  58. We read about it in Matthew's Gospel,

  59. chapter 6.

  60. So in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  61. we have the longer version

  62. of this same prayer.

  63. the one that we're more familiar with

  64. in verses 9 to 13.

  65. And you'll notice those phrases

  66. and words that seem like they're missing

  67. from Luke are here.

  68. We also notice,

  69. if we're looking in Matthew's Gospel,

  70. that what Jesus taught here,

  71. this is actually a different occasion.

  72. Jesus wasn't praying

  73. right before this.

  74. He was actually teaching

  75. about prayer.

  76. And then if we look at

  77. what comes after

  78. in Matthew's Gospel,

  79. we see that he continues teaching.

  80. But his teaching is different

  81. than the stuff that comes after

  82. in Luke's Gospel.

  83. In fact,

  84. we know where we're at

  85. in Luke,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  86. chapter 11.

  87. The Sermon on the Mount

  88. has already taken place

  89. back in chapter 6.

  90. And so what we've got going on here

  91. is two different occasions

  92. where Jesus taught

  93. about how to pray

  94. using very similar words.

  95. One of those occasions,

  96. he used a little bit more words

  97. and had a few extra phrases

  98. and words in there.

  99. And on the other occasion

  100. with his disciples later

  101. in Luke's Gospel,

  102. there's a few less words

  103. and phrases.

  104. And we've already said this before,

  105. but Jesus often taught

  106. the same things

  107. over and over again

  108. in different places

  109. to different people.

  110. He wanted everyone

  111. to hear the same message,

  112. the same good news

  113. of the kingdom,

  114. the same instruction,

  115. the same teaching.

  116. And sometimes he used

  117. a little different wording

  118. here than there.

  119. Now you might be wondering,

  120. is there any relevance

  121. to all this?

  122. I think there is.

  123. One of the questions

  124. that we have

  125. is what are we supposed

  126. to do with this prayer?

  127. Does Jesus want his disciples

  128. to pray this very same prayer,

  129. these exact words?

  130. And how often,

  131. how frequently?

  132. Every day?

  133. Or is this prayer

  134. a sort of template,

  135. a guide,

  136. an example

  137. of how we should pray?

  138. And I think the answer

  139. to that is kind of proven

  140. by the fact

  141. there are two slightly

  142. different versions of it.

  143. If Jesus himself

  144. didn't feel obligated

  145. to use the exact same words

  146. on both occasions,

  147. it's evidence

  148. that this is a guiding prayer.

  149. It's an example

  150. of how we should pray

  151. and not the only prayer

  152. that we must pray

  153. word for word

  154. all the time.

  155. In some churches,

  156. the reciting of this prayer

  157. is done so often,

  158. it's become

  159. a very strong tradition.

  160. And there's a sort of danger

  161. that can go with that.

  162. Not that we shouldn't

  163. use these words often,

  164. but we can become

  165. like the lawyer

  166. that we heard about

  167. back in chapter 10,

  168. where we're able

  169. to recite the prayer

  170. perfectly and flawlessly

  171. from memory.

  172. But as we recite it,

  173. are we actually praying

  174. from our hearts

  175. to God

  176. these words?

  177. Or are we just

  178. mindlessly rattling off

  179. the same thing

  180. again and again?

  181. Because if that's

  182. what we're doing,

  183. this prayer can become

  184. a religious ritual

  185. rather than part of

  186. a meaningful relationship

  187. that we have

  188. with God.

  189. And the last thing

  190. that God wants

  191. from us

  192. is for us to just

  193. sort of rattle

  194. this thing off

  195. over and over

  196. and over again

  197. without even thinking

  198. about what we mean

  199. when we do it.

  200. Well, let's take

  201. some time

  202. to work through

  203. the phrases

  204. of this prayer

  205. and just reflect

  206. on what these

  207. words mean.

  208. What does it mean

  209. to pray

  210. according to this

  211. example prayer?

  212. Well, the first

  213. and perhaps

  214. the most surprising

  215. thing,

  216. right at the beginning

  217. of this prayer,

  218. Jesus teaches us

  219. to address God

  220. as our Father.

  221. When you pray,

  222. say,

  223. Father.

  224. This surprises us

  225. because we're used

  226. to the more lofty

  227. titles that God

  228. has.

  229. The Lord,

  230. Almighty,

  231. the Holy One.

  232. But Father,

  233. I mean,

  234. that feels close.

  235. That feels affectionate.

  236. That's family language.

  237. And I think

  238. Jesus is introducing

  239. His disciples

  240. to a closeness

  241. of relationship

  242. that they have

  243. not known

  244. with God.

  245. A closeness

  246. that Jesus

  247. will bring

  248. between

  249. God and us

  250. through His

  251. saving work.

  252. Jesus has come

  253. to bring us

  254. into the family

  255. of God

  256. as dearly loved

  257. children.

  258. This is a wonderful

  259. truth

  260. and amazing news.

  261. We read in Romans

  262. how He has come

  263. to secure

  264. our adoption

  265. as sons

  266. and daughters

  267. members

  268. of God.

  269. Very members

  270. of God's

  271. family.

  272. And so,

  273. Father fits

  274. the relationship

  275. that Jesus

  276. has come

  277. to bring us

  278. into

  279. with God.

  280. Next,

  281. Jesus says,

  282. Hallowed be

  283. your name.

  284. Father,

  285. hallowed be

  286. your name.

  287. What does that

  288. mean?

  289. the word

  290. over the years

  291. as English

  292. translations

  293. are updated,

  294. they've been

  295. quite hesitant

  296. to touch

  297. this word

  298. and kind

  299. of give it

  300. a more

  301. familiar

  302. word.

  303. It's so part

  304. of tradition

  305. that this is

  306. what the Lord's

  307. prayer is,

  308. that we're

  309. just used

  310. to it.

  311. Hallowed

  312. be thy

  313. name.

  314. But what

  315. do we

  316. even

  317. mean by

  318. that?

  319. What does

  320. hallowed

  321. mean?

  322. the word

  323. used here

  324. is actually,

  325. it comes

  326. from the

  327. word holy.

  328. It's the

  329. verb form

  330. of the

  331. word holy.

  332. And it

  333. means to

  334. treat as

  335. holy.

  336. Or to

  337. set apart

  338. as special.

  339. The

  340. Christian

  341. Standard

  342. Bible has

  343. an excellent

  344. translation.

  345. It says,

  346. Father,

  347. your name

  348. be honored

  349. as holy.

  350. Another

  351. translation

  352. says,

  353. Father,

  354. may your

  355. name be

  356. held

  357. in honor.

  358. So what

  359. am I really

  360. saying to

  361. God if I

  362. use these

  363. words?

  364. I'm saying,

  365. God,

  366. I desire

  367. that your

  368. name be

  369. honored,

  370. be revered.

  371. That all

  372. people would

  373. treat you

  374. as the

  375. holy God

  376. that you

  377. are.

  378. That they

  379. would praise

  380. your name

  381. and glorify

  382. your name

  383. and so

  384. before we

  385. can even

  386. really say

  387. these words

  388. to God,

  389. we really

  390. need to

  391. almost stop

  392. and think

  393. about,

  394. do I

  395. actually

  396. desire

  397. God's

  398. name to

  399. be

  400. honored?

  401. Lord,

  402. is that

  403. the cry

  404. of my

  405. heart?

  406. That God's

  407. name be

  408. revered

  409. and praised

  410. by all?

  411. is at the desire of your heart

  412. next we read

  413. your kingdom come

  414. so father

  415. hallowed be your name

  416. your kingdom come

  417. Jesus teaches us to long for

  418. and desire

  419. the coming of the kingdom

  420. of God

  421. and if this is the first time you've ever heard anything like this

  422. you might even be wondering

  423. what is the kingdom of God

  424. this sounds weird

  425. if you've been a Christian for some time

  426. and you've been reading in the Bible

  427. you'll know that Jesus spoke a lot

  428. about the kingdom of God

  429. and how it's come near

  430. but really the hope of the kingdom of God

  431. goes way back to before

  432. Jesus was even born

  433. back into ancient times

  434. the hope of God's kingdom

  435. comes from promises

  436. that he made to his people

  437. to put it

  438. sort of briefly

  439. and very simply

  440. the kingdom of God

  441. is the last kingdom of earth

  442. it's the greatest kingdom

  443. earth will ever see or know

  444. it's a global kingdom

  445. that God will establish

  446. through the one that he has chosen

  447. to be king

  448. and that one of course is his son

  449. Jesus

  450. and it's a permanent kingdom

  451. a forever kingdom

  452. and the citizens of that kingdom

  453. will be all who belong to God

  454. and Jesus has lots to say

  455. about this coming kingdom

  456. many of his parables

  457. and teachings

  458. are aimed at helping us

  459. understand it better

  460. well here in this prayer

  461. Jesus urges us

  462. to desire the kingdom of God

  463. and even to ask God

  464. to let it come

  465. to express that longing to God

  466. and so again

  467. we have to kind of

  468. take a step back

  469. and ask the question

  470. do you long

  471. for the fullness

  472. of God's kingdom

  473. to come

  474. do you desire it

  475. do you long for Jesus

  476. the king

  477. to return

  478. the one who will reign

  479. in righteousness

  480. and justice

  481. over all the earth

  482. Jesus says

  483. express that longing

  484. to God

  485. regularly

  486. next we read

  487. give us

  488. each day

  489. our daily bread

  490. and

  491. it's amazing

  492. how much is packed

  493. into this one

  494. little

  495. request

  496. maybe before we even

  497. get to the words

  498. we notice that

  499. up until now

  500. we haven't really

  501. asked for anything

  502. for ourselves

  503. yet in this prayer

  504. and that's probably

  505. by design

  506. in other words

  507. according to Jesus

  508. before we start

  509. asking God

  510. for things

  511. that we need

  512. we should first

  513. acknowledge him

  514. we should first

  515. remember who he is

  516. we should first

  517. put our thoughts

  518. to his great

  519. end

  520. which is his kingdom

  521. and then

  522. come to bring

  523. our things

  524. that we are

  525. looking for

  526. from God

  527. into our prayer

  528. second

  529. we might notice

  530. that the word

  531. please

  532. is absent

  533. it just says

  534. give us each day

  535. our daily bread

  536. but

  537. even though

  538. please is

  539. absent

  540. humility

  541. and reverence

  542. is sort of

  543. implied

  544. we could even

  545. translate this

  546. as grant us

  547. each day

  548. our daily bread

  549. it's not a

  550. demand

  551. but a humble

  552. request

  553. in fact

  554. even asking

  555. God for

  556. our daily

  557. provision

  558. is really

  559. us admitting

  560. that we

  561. need him

  562. just to live

  563. it's us

  564. admitting that

  565. we're not

  566. self-sufficient

  567. but we require

  568. his sustaining

  569. provision

  570. day after day

  571. and so it's

  572. actually really

  573. very humbling

  574. thing to pray

  575. it's a

  576. declaration

  577. of our

  578. dependence

  579. on God

  580. give us

  581. each day

  582. our daily

  583. bread

  584. next we

  585. notice that

  586. word bread

  587. how many of

  588. you had bread

  589. for breakfast

  590. this morning

  591. I don't expect

  592. you to raise

  593. your hands

  594. but it's

  595. something that

  596. we eat

  597. to live

  598. but it's

  599. also symbolic

  600. it's used

  601. often in

  602. the Bible

  603. as sort

  604. of the

  605. representative

  606. food

  607. it's not

  608. just bread

  609. or food

  610. that we

  611. need to

  612. live

  613. it represents

  614. sustenance

  615. and so that's

  616. the principle

  617. behind I think

  618. what Jesus

  619. is saying

  620. give us

  621. each day

  622. our daily

  623. bread

  624. provide for

  625. us

  626. the things

  627. that we

  628. need

  629. and so we're

  630. not limited

  631. to asking

  632. for food

  633. we can ask

  634. for anything

  635. what is it

  636. that you

  637. need

  638. God desires

  639. that we come

  640. to him by

  641. prayer and

  642. just ask him

  643. for those

  644. things

  645. whatever they

  646. may be

  647. it's also

  648. hard not

  649. to miss

  650. the daily

  651. emphasis

  652. here

  653. it comes

  654. through really

  655. strongly

  656. give us

  657. each day

  658. our daily

  659. bread

  660. and we

  661. can reflect

  662. on this

  663. there's lots

  664. here

  665. we could

  666. talk about

  667. whether God

  668. just provides

  669. us with

  670. what we

  671. need

  672. one day

  673. for each

  674. day at

  675. the beginning

  676. of that

  677. day or

  678. during that

  679. day

  680. one of the

  681. things I got

  682. thinking about

  683. here was

  684. how this

  685. sort of

  686. implies

  687. that we

  688. pray

  689. daily

  690. that we

  691. come to

  692. God

  693. and ask

  694. for each

  695. day's

  696. provision

  697. in other

  698. words

  699. Jesus is

  700. steering us

  701. toward a

  702. certain

  703. frequency

  704. of

  705. communication

  706. with

  707. God

  708. our

  709. relationship

  710. with God

  711. as our

  712. father

  713. is intended

  714. to be

  715. more than

  716. an exchange

  717. of words

  718. every couple

  719. weeks

  720. or every

  721. Sunday

  722. this sort

  723. of implies

  724. that we

  725. talk

  726. with God

  727. about our

  728. needs

  729. each day

  730. doesn't it

  731. give us

  732. each day

  733. our daily

  734. bread

  735. our

  736. relationship

  737. with God

  738. as dependent

  739. children in

  740. his family

  741. is to be

  742. a daily

  743. relationship

  744. that's what

  745. he wants

  746. with us

  747. a daily

  748. walk with

  749. him

  750. what do

  751. you need

  752. from God

  753. today

  754. we might

  755. reflect on

  756. earlier this

  757. morning

  758. did we

  759. stop and

  760. take time

  761. to just

  762. ask God

  763. for the

  764. things that

  765. we need

  766. for today

  767. but more

  768. than that

  769. if daily

  770. is the

  771. frequency

  772. then it

  773. sort of

  774. makes sense

  775. that this

  776. be our

  777. habit

  778. that every

  779. morning

  780. at some

  781. point

  782. we take

  783. time to

  784. bring our

  785. needs to

  786. him

  787. do you

  788. do that

  789. perhaps one

  790. of the

  791. reasons we

  792. struggle with

  793. this is

  794. because we

  795. aren't always

  796. desperate

  797. and in dire

  798. straits

  799. in the

  800. toughest of

  801. moments

  802. when things

  803. feel out

  804. of our

  805. control

  806. it's easy

  807. to

  808. pray

  809. and ask

  810. God for

  811. help

  812. but we

  813. aren't

  814. always in

  815. dire

  816. need

  817. perhaps we

  818. even feel

  819. sometimes if

  820. we're honest

  821. that we

  822. don't really

  823. need God's

  824. help

  825. today

  826. or provision

  827. we can

  828. get what we

  829. need on our

  830. own

  831. and yet

  832. even the

  833. strength to

  834. get up

  835. and go to

  836. work

  837. and earn

  838. the next

  839. dollar

  840. it comes

  841. from God

  842. having

  843. anything at

  844. all

  845. ultimately

  846. is the

  847. grace

  848. and provision

  849. of God

  850. we are

  851. far more

  852. dependent on

  853. him for

  854. life and

  855. for everything

  856. else

  857. than we

  858. realize

  859. and so it

  860. really is

  861. fitting as

  862. Jesus taught

  863. to come to

  864. him each

  865. day and

  866. ask for

  867. each day's

  868. things that

  869. we need

  870. from him

  871. well next

  872. Jesus says

  873. when you

  874. pray say

  875. father

  876. forgive us

  877. of our

  878. sins

  879. forgive us

  880. our sins

  881. for we

  882. also

  883. forgive

  884. everyone

  885. who sins

  886. against us

  887. I couldn't

  888. help but

  889. notice the

  890. order of

  891. the things

  892. and how

  893. they come

  894. in this

  895. prayer

  896. we might

  897. have expected

  898. that this

  899. should be

  900. the first

  901. thing

  902. that we

  903. ask God

  904. for

  905. before we

  906. can even

  907. expect to

  908. receive anything

  909. else from

  910. God

  911. we need

  912. to first

  913. ask God

  914. to forgive

  915. us of

  916. our sins

  917. but the

  918. truth is

  919. it's not

  920. how it

  921. works in

  922. the family

  923. of God

  924. once we

  925. belong to

  926. him through

  927. Jesus we

  928. are part of

  929. his family

  930. this prayer

  931. for forgiveness

  932. I don't

  933. think is

  934. is the

  935. first moment

  936. of repentance

  937. in a

  938. believer's

  939. life

  940. it's not

  941. the first

  942. time

  943. praying this

  944. prayer that

  945. we would

  946. ask for

  947. God's

  948. forgiveness

  949. I think

  950. it's here

  951. to show

  952. us that

  953. even after

  954. we already

  955. have confessed

  956. and repented

  957. and believed

  958. in the

  959. Lord

  960. we have

  961. to come

  962. back to

  963. God

  964. and confess

  965. our sins

  966. continually

  967. and regularly

  968. an ordinary

  969. human

  970. relationship

  971. works the

  972. same

  973. imagine what

  974. would happen

  975. if you went

  976. to a loved

  977. one in your

  978. family and

  979. you said

  980. would you

  981. please forgive

  982. me of

  983. everything that

  984. I've done

  985. wrong against

  986. you

  987. and they

  988. said yeah

  989. I will

  990. but then as

  991. your relationship

  992. with them

  993. continues

  994. you continue

  995. to do

  996. things

  997. to them

  998. it's just

  999. like at

  1000. home

  1001. as your

  1002. relationship

  1003. with the

  1004. person that

  1005. you

  1006. ask for

  1007. forgiveness

  1008. from

  1009. continues

  1010. you continue

  1011. to do

  1012. things to

  1013. them that

  1014. are wrong

  1015. you continue

  1016. to say

  1017. things to

  1018. them that

  1019. are hurtful

  1020. what if

  1021. you never

  1022. apologized

  1023. or admitted

  1024. anything

  1025. that you

  1026. did wrong

  1027. to them

  1028. again

  1029. because you

  1030. thought

  1031. well I

  1032. did that

  1033. already

  1034. that was

  1035. good enough

  1036. wasn't it

  1037. they said

  1038. they forgave

  1039. me so

  1040. what's the

  1041. need

  1042. well it's

  1043. true that

  1044. God has

  1045. forgiven us

  1046. through Christ

  1047. of all of

  1048. our sins

  1049. past

  1050. present

  1051. and future

  1052. and that

  1053. when we

  1054. repent and

  1055. we put

  1056. our faith

  1057. in him

  1058. that

  1059. forgiveness

  1060. is ours

  1061. but that

  1062. has to

  1063. do

  1064. with

  1065. our

  1066. status

  1067. with

  1068. God

  1069. our

  1070. standing

  1071. with

  1072. him

  1073. there

  1074. is

  1075. still

  1076. that

  1077. real

  1078. daily

  1079. relationship

  1080. that we

  1081. have

  1082. with

  1083. God

  1084. where we

  1085. need to

  1086. admit to

  1087. him

  1088. when we've

  1089. sinned

  1090. and ask

  1091. for his

  1092. forgiveness

  1093. that's how

  1094. a real

  1095. relationship

  1096. works

  1097. and so

  1098. Jesus

  1099. taught his

  1100. disciples

  1101. to regularly

  1102. ask God

  1103. for forgiveness

  1104. for their

  1105. sins

  1106. and again

  1107. this is a

  1108. sort of

  1109. general

  1110. request

  1111. but as

  1112. with the

  1113. bread

  1114. I think

  1115. there's a

  1116. sort of

  1117. principle

  1118. here

  1119. we ask

  1120. sometimes

  1121. just very

  1122. generally

  1123. would you

  1124. forgive me

  1125. of my

  1126. sins

  1127. knowing that

  1128. we can't

  1129. even begin

  1130. to name

  1131. or count

  1132. or remember

  1133. them all

  1134. but I think

  1135. the principle

  1136. here

  1137. implies

  1138. that we

  1139. would also

  1140. at times

  1141. confess

  1142. specifics

  1143. there's

  1144. specific

  1145. things

  1146. you know

  1147. that you've

  1148. done

  1149. wrong

  1150. I think

  1151. it's

  1152. implied

  1153. that

  1154. here

  1155. as we

  1156. pray

  1157. that would

  1158. be the

  1159. moment

  1160. yes

  1161. confess

  1162. those

  1163. things

  1164. to God

  1165. ask

  1166. for his

  1167. forgiveness

  1168. and

  1169. it's not

  1170. stated here

  1171. but I think

  1172. it's implied

  1173. it's also

  1174. taught elsewhere

  1175. that God

  1176. does not

  1177. withhold

  1178. forgiveness

  1179. from us

  1180. when we

  1181. sincerely

  1182. ask for

  1183. it

  1184. he is

  1185. gracious

  1186. to forgive

  1187. us

  1188. when we

  1189. confess

  1190. our sins

  1191. to him

  1192. you see

  1193. that in

  1194. first

  1195. John

  1196. 1 9

  1197. Jesus

  1198. has made

  1199. atonement

  1200. for our

  1201. sins

  1202. once and

  1203. for all

  1204. and so

  1205. God can

  1206. simply

  1207. grant us

  1208. forgiveness

  1209. whenever we

  1210. ask

  1211. what's

  1212. particularly

  1213. interesting

  1214. about this

  1215. part of the

  1216. prayer

  1217. this request

  1218. is that

  1219. unlike the

  1220. other things

  1221. asked for

  1222. this thing

  1223. comes with

  1224. an add-on

  1225. forgive us

  1226. our sins

  1227. for we

  1228. also forgive

  1229. everyone

  1230. who sins

  1231. against us

  1232. there's this

  1233. add-on

  1234. it's maybe a

  1235. little strange

  1236. and unexpected

  1237. we probably

  1238. wouldn't put

  1239. this into

  1240. the prayer

  1241. except that

  1242. Jesus told

  1243. us to

  1244. we might be

  1245. tempted to

  1246. think of our

  1247. relationships

  1248. with other

  1249. people as

  1250. having nothing

  1251. to do with

  1252. our relationship

  1253. with God

  1254. and whether

  1255. God forgives

  1256. me of my

  1257. sins when I

  1258. ask him

  1259. has nothing

  1260. to do with

  1261. whether I

  1262. forgive others

  1263. who sin

  1264. against me

  1265. when they

  1266. ask me

  1267. right

  1268. those are

  1269. two separate

  1270. relationships

  1271. aren't they

  1272. but the way

  1273. Jesus teaches

  1274. us to pray

  1275. here

  1276. forces us

  1277. to think

  1278. right in the

  1279. moment when

  1280. we're asking

  1281. for his

  1282. forgiveness

  1283. of how we're

  1284. treating

  1285. others

  1286. it's almost

  1287. as if Jesus

  1288. is saying

  1289. do not

  1290. expect to

  1291. receive forgiveness

  1292. from God

  1293. for your sins

  1294. if you're not

  1295. willing to

  1296. grant the

  1297. same to

  1298. others who

  1299. have sinned

  1300. against you

  1301. so every

  1302. time you

  1303. come to

  1304. God asking

  1305. for forgiveness

  1306. think of

  1307. those who

  1308. have sinned

  1309. against you

  1310. and have

  1311. you forgiven

  1312. them

  1313. basically we're

  1314. praying

  1315. father treat

  1316. me as I

  1317. have treated

  1318. others

  1319. forgive me

  1320. just as I

  1321. also forgive

  1322. those who

  1323. sin against

  1324. me

  1325. can you

  1326. honestly pray

  1327. this prayer

  1328. if you're

  1329. withholding

  1330. forgiveness

  1331. from someone

  1332. if you're

  1333. holding a

  1334. grudge

  1335. if you're

  1336. keeping a

  1337. record of

  1338. wrongs

  1339. and grievances

  1340. and offenses

  1341. in your

  1342. heart

  1343. with someone

  1344. if there's

  1345. one thing

  1346. that God's

  1347. children must

  1348. be known

  1349. for

  1350. it's

  1351. forgiving

  1352. forgiving

  1353. one another

  1354. this is so

  1355. significant

  1356. that Jesus

  1357. when he's

  1358. teaching on

  1359. the other

  1360. occasion

  1361. in the

  1362. Sermon on

  1363. the Mount

  1364. this part

  1365. of the

  1366. prayer

  1367. he actually

  1368. elaborates

  1369. on this

  1370. point

  1371. and he

  1372. says this

  1373. in Matthew

    Matthew 6:14

  1374. 6

  1375. verse 14

  1376. he says

  1377. for if you

  1378. forgive other

  1379. people

  1380. when they

  1381. sin against

  1382. you

  1383. your heavenly

  1384. father will

  1385. also forgive

  1386. you

  1387. but if you

  1388. do not

  1389. forgive others

  1390. their sins

  1391. your father

  1392. will not

  1393. forgive your

  1394. sins

  1395. that's a scary

  1396. thought isn't

  1397. it

  1398. if you

  1399. withhold

  1400. forgiveness

  1401. from others

  1402. when they

  1403. sin against

  1404. you

  1405. God

  1406. will withhold

  1407. forgiveness

  1408. from you

  1409. this is

  1410. one of

  1411. those

  1412. truths

  1413. in the

  1414. Bible

  1415. that makes

  1416. us

  1417. squirm

  1418. it

  1419. unsettles

  1420. us

  1421. what about

  1422. the many

  1423. assurances

  1424. we have

  1425. of salvation

  1426. what about

  1427. the doctrine

  1428. of eternal

  1429. security

  1430. well it

  1431. seems to me

  1432. that those

  1433. offer no

  1434. guarantees

  1435. to the

  1436. person

  1437. who will

  1438. not

  1439. forgive

  1440. I don't

  1441. know how

  1442. else to

  1443. take those

  1444. words

  1445. a true

  1446. child of

  1447. God

  1448. must

  1449. and will

  1450. forgive

  1451. those who

  1452. sin against

  1453. them

  1454. if they

  1455. persist in

  1456. stubbornly

  1457. refusing

  1458. forgiveness

  1459. then whether

  1460. they truly

  1461. know God

  1462. and his

  1463. gracious

  1464. gospel

  1465. is in

  1466. question

  1467. this is

  1468. further

  1469. reinforced

  1470. by Jesus

  1471. parable

  1472. of the

  1473. unmerciful

  1474. servant

  1475. in

  1476. Matthew

  1477. 18

  1478. finally

  1479. Jesus

  1480. teaches

  1481. us to

  1482. pray

  1483. these last

  1484. words in

  1485. the prayer

  1486. in Luke's

  1487. gospel

  1488. lead us

  1489. not

  1490. into

  1491. temptation

  1492. what is

  1493. it that

  1494. causes us

  1495. to sin

  1496. in the

  1497. first

  1498. place

  1499. how do

  1500. we get

  1501. to that

  1502. place

  1503. where we

  1504. choose

  1505. to do

  1506. the wrong

  1507. thing

  1508. temptation

  1509. is part

  1510. of the

  1511. process

  1512. it's

  1513. kind of

  1514. somewhere

  1515. in there

  1516. on the

  1517. way

  1518. to

  1519. doing

  1520. it

  1521. James

  1522. actually

  1523. describes

  1524. this

  1525. quite

  1526. vividly

  1527. in his

  1528. letter

  1529. in James

  1530. chapter

  1531. one

  1532. he says

  1533. when

  1534. when tempted

  1535. no one

  1536. should say

  1537. God is

  1538. tempting

  1539. me

  1540. for God

  1541. cannot be

  1542. tempted

  1543. by evil

  1544. nor does

  1545. he tempt

  1546. anyone

  1547. but each

  1548. person is

  1549. tempted when

  1550. they're dragged

  1551. away by their

  1552. own evil

  1553. desire

  1554. and enticed

  1555. then

  1556. after desire

  1557. has conceived

  1558. it gives

  1559. birth to

  1560. sin

  1561. and sin

  1562. when it is

  1563. full grown

  1564. gives birth

  1565. to death

  1566. James

  1567. describes

  1568. temptation

  1569. as being

  1570. dragged

  1571. away

  1572. by our

  1573. own evil

  1574. desires

  1575. we might

  1576. call it

  1577. temptation

  1578. from the

  1579. inside

  1580. but we

  1581. also know

  1582. that we

  1583. can be

  1584. tempted

  1585. from the

  1586. outside

  1587. as well

  1588. from other

  1589. people

  1590. and from

  1591. the devil

  1592. we heard

  1593. earlier in

  1594. Luke about

  1595. how the

  1596. devil

  1597. tempted

  1598. Jesus

  1599. whatever

  1600. the source

  1601. of temptation

  1602. whether it's

  1603. inside

  1604. or outside

  1605. temptation

  1606. is sort

  1607. of the

  1608. last moment

  1609. of struggle

  1610. before we

  1611. sin

  1612. and here

  1613. Jesus

  1614. teaches us

  1615. to pray

  1616. and to

  1617. ask God

  1618. for help

  1619. in those

  1620. for those

  1621. moments

  1622. even before

  1623. we're tempted

  1624. to sin

  1625. we're to

  1626. ask God

  1627. to watch

  1628. over our

  1629. path

  1630. lead us

  1631. such that

  1632. we will

  1633. not even

  1634. get close

  1635. to sin

  1636. against you

  1637. let me

  1638. not be

  1639. dragged

  1640. away

  1641. by my

  1642. own

  1643. evil

  1644. desires

  1645. steer me

  1646. away

  1647. from the

  1648. moments

  1649. and the

  1650. places

  1651. where I

  1652. will be

  1653. bombarded

  1654. by external

  1655. temptations

  1656. such that

  1657. I might

  1658. give in

  1659. and do

  1660. what's

  1661. wrong

  1662. there's

  1663. sort of

  1664. an earnestness

  1665. in these

  1666. words

  1667. just to

  1668. please

  1669. God

  1670. and do

  1671. what's

  1672. right

  1673. and not

  1674. be

  1675. taken

  1676. captive

  1677. again

  1678. to do

  1679. what we

  1680. know is

  1681. wrong

  1682. this plea

  1683. at the end

  1684. of the

  1685. prayer

  1686. here

  1687. it reminds

  1688. me of

  1689. some of

  1690. David's

  1691. moments

  1692. of prayer

  1693. in the

  1694. Psalms

  1695. I think

  1696. of Psalm

    Psalms 119:29

  1697. 119

  1698. verse 29

  1699. where he

  1700. prays

  1701. keep me

  1702. from deceitful

  1703. ways

  1704. be

  1705. gracious

  1706. to me

  1707. and teach

  1708. me your

  1709. law

  1710. or Psalm

    Psalms 119:36

  1711. 119

  1712. verse 36

  1713. where David

  1714. says turn

  1715. my heart

  1716. toward your

  1717. statutes

  1718. and not

  1719. toward selfish

  1720. gain

  1721. you can

  1722. almost hear

  1723. the battle

  1724. raging in

  1725. David's

  1726. heart

  1727. as he

  1728. prays this

  1729. Lord turn

  1730. my heart

  1731. I think

  1732. it's a

  1733. similar

  1734. prayer

  1735. lead us

  1736. not into

  1737. temptation

  1738. work in

  1739. us that

  1740. we go

  1741. the other

  1742. way

  1743. do we

  1744. pray and

  1745. ask God

  1746. regularly

  1747. for help

  1748. to overcome

  1749. sin

  1750. and temptation

  1751. God is

  1752. eager to

  1753. give us

  1754. that help

  1755. so these

  1756. are the

  1757. kinds of

  1758. things that

  1759. we should

  1760. say to

  1761. God

  1762. according to

  1763. Jesus

  1764. when we

  1765. pray

  1766. just in

  1767. summary

  1768. we should

  1769. acknowledge

  1770. him

  1771. we should

  1772. remember

  1773. who he

  1774. is

  1775. we should

  1776. express

  1777. our desire

  1778. for his

  1779. name to

  1780. be honored

  1781. and for

  1782. his kingdom

  1783. to come

  1784. we should

  1785. humbly ask

  1786. for each

  1787. day the

  1788. things that

  1789. we need

  1790. we should

  1791. regularly ask

  1792. for his

  1793. forgiveness

  1794. for the

  1795. things that

  1796. we've done

  1797. wrong

  1798. while also

  1799. being mindful

  1800. of how

  1801. we're treating

  1802. others

  1803. we should

  1804. ask for

  1805. his help

  1806. in our

  1807. battle

  1808. against

  1809. sin

  1810. and

  1811. temptation

  1812. these

  1813. are the

  1814. things

  1815. that

  1816. please

  1817. God

  1818. these

  1819. are the

  1820. things

  1821. that

  1822. he

  1823. wants

  1824. to

  1825. hear

  1826. from

  1827. us

  1828. and

  1829. as we

  1830. do

  1831. I think

  1832. we need

  1833. to

  1834. just

  1835. remember

  1836. we

  1837. can

  1838. use

  1839. these

  1840. words

  1841. exactly

  1842. maybe

  1843. you

  1844. do

  1845. frequently

  1846. but we

  1847. must guard

  1848. against

  1849. that sort

  1850. of empty

  1851. ritualistic

  1852. recitation

  1853. we must

  1854. put our

  1855. heart

  1856. into these

  1857. words

  1858. as we

  1859. speak them

  1860. to God

  1861. these

  1862. words are

  1863. here to

  1864. guide us

  1865. into

  1866. relationship

  1867. with him

  1868. so let's

  1869. just end

  1870. by asking

  1871. God to

  1872. work these

  1873. words

  1874. deep into

  1875. our hearts

  1876. let's pray

  1877. together

  1878. father in

  1879. heaven

  1880. we thank

  1881. you that

  1882. you desire

  1883. a relationship

  1884. with us

  1885. even though

  1886. we have

  1887. sinned

  1888. so many

  1889. times

  1890. that we've

  1891. lost count

  1892. we thank

  1893. you that

  1894. you are

  1895. merciful

  1896. and

  1897. sent

  1898. your son

  1899. into our

  1900. world to

  1901. draw us

  1902. into this

  1903. wonderful

  1904. relationship

  1905. with you

  1906. that we

  1907. now have

  1908. and I

  1909. pray that

  1910. we wouldn't

  1911. lose

  1912. the awe

  1913. and the

  1914. wonder

  1915. of that

  1916. Lord remind

  1917. us

  1918. each one

  1919. of us

  1920. through this

  1921. prayer

  1922. of how we

  1923. can continue

  1924. to be in

  1925. relationship

  1926. with you

  1927. the things

  1928. we need

  1929. to keep

  1930. bringing to

  1931. you

  1932. whether it's

  1933. our needs

  1934. or our

  1935. struggles

  1936. with sin

  1937. or maybe

  1938. it's a

  1939. relationship

  1940. with someone

  1941. who we're

  1942. having a

  1943. tough time

  1944. forgiving

  1945. press these

  1946. words deep

  1947. into our

  1948. hearts

  1949. the cry of

  1950. our heart

  1951. is for

  1952. your name

  1953. to be

  1954. honored

  1955. and for

  1956. you to

  1957. be praised

  1958. and we know

  1959. that these

  1960. words are

  1961. given for

  1962. that reason

  1963. so lead us

  1964. in that we

  1965. ask in

  1966. Jesus name

  1967. amen
