  1. There are few things that people hate more than hypocrisy.

  2. When people say one thing and yet do another or say another.

  3. ! Politicians are a familiar example of this.

  4. ! So often they make promises of what they will do when they're elected.

  5. And then once they're elected, they break those promises.

  6. Or sometimes even worse, they'll get caught doing something completely opposite to what they promised.

  7. Well, even worse than the stench of political hypocrisy is that of religious hypocrisy.

  8. Many times people who call themselves Christians or even pastors have been caught red-handed

  9. in an ongoing pattern of immoral behavior.

  10. Just as an example of this, you might have heard of this guy, Rabbi Zacharias.

  11. He was internationally known as a defender of the Christian faith.

  12. He wrote books.

  13. He spoke all over the place in churches, schools, universities.

  14. And then it came out that for at least 10 years leading up to his death, possibly longer,

  15. he'd been living in gross sexual immorality and had committed numerous acts of sexual abuse.

  16. Well, he's one of the big stories out there.

  17. But on a smaller scale, many people have smelled firsthand the stench of a local Christian hypocrite.

  18. It might look like someone who's always condescending and critical of others.

  19. It might look like someone who's super concerned about moral purity or about believing just the right things.

  20. But everybody knows that they have little compassion or concern for anybody but themselves.

  21. And it might show up just in the kinds of comments that they make or the things that they say.

  22. And so people have been quick to conclude that Christians are a bunch of hypocrites.

  23. Maybe you've heard that said.

  24. But what might come as a surprise to many is that Jesus himself had a bone to pick with hypocrites.

  25. In our journey through the Gospel of Luke, we've seen how Jesus had a lot of attention from the religious groups.

  26. The Pharisees and the religious law teachers.

  27. They tried to label him as a blasphemer.

  28. They saw him spending time with the questionable in society.

  29. A group of tax collectors and their friends.

  30. And they tried to dirty Jesus' reputation by spreading news that Jesus hangs out with tax collectors and sinners and drunkards.

  31. They tried to call into question whether he was really devoted to God.

  32. You know, we Pharisees, we fast and pray often.

  33. But we don't see your disciples doing that very much.

  34. They accused him of failing to keep the Sabbath day holy.

  35. Working on the Sabbath when he was healing people.

  36. They were incensed that he pronounced forgiveness to a repentant prostitute.

  37. Who they felt should have been stoned to death.

  38. And eventually, this sort of antagonism from the Pharisees just keeps on building.

  39. We've heard just recently about how it came to the point where they accused him of casting out a demon by the power of Satan.

  40. Earlier in this chapter.

  41. We read in Luke 6 verse 11 that the Pharisees were furious.

    Luke 6:11

  42. And they began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

  43. And it's here in chapter 11 that things really come to a head.

  44. Between Jesus and the religious leaders.

  45. Jesus is invited over to a Pharisee's house.

  46. And Jesus just unleashes on them.

  47. He calls them out for their hypocrisy.

  48. Let's read what happened here in Luke 11 starting in verse 37.

  49. When Jesus had finished speaking.

  50. A Pharisee invited Jesus to eat with him.

  51. So he went in and reclined at the table.

  52. Now that might be surprising.

  53. If you.

  54. Just one moment ago they were saying.

  55. Jesus you're in league with Satan.

  56. And the next minute they're inviting him over for dinner.

  57. There's something fishy about this.

  58. And we know from later on in this passage.

  59. That this is not just one Pharisee.

  60. But several Pharisees.

  61. And religious.

  62. Law teachers.

  63. Who are present at this meal.

  64. And so with the tensions as high as they are.

  65. This is going to be an interesting meal.

  66. Let's keep going.

  67. But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed.

  68. That Jesus did not first wash.

  69. Before the meal.

  70. So Jesus hardly even gets to sitting down.

  71. And he's already offended them.

  72. Now of course we read this from our modern viewpoint.

  73. And we might even be surprised ourselves.

  74. That Jesus didn't wash his hands.

  75. Before the meal.

  76. But this wasn't the same kind of washing.

  77. That we're used to.

  78. Back then.

  79. Mark actually tells us in his gospel.

  80. That the Pharisees did not eat.

  81. Unless they gave their hands.

  82. A ceremonial washing.

  83. Holding to the tradition of the elders.

  84. And this ritual washing.

  85. They would dip their hands in a bowl of water.

  86. It wasn't about hygiene.

  87. It was actually about maintaining ritual purity.

  88. Religious purity.

  89. As if somehow being out in the marketplace.

  90. Could contaminate you.

  91. Because you'd be coming into contact with the unclean.

  92. And so just in case.

  93. We're going to do this washing before the meal.

  94. So that when we put our hands to our mouths.

  95. We're not contaminating in here.

  96. Well Jesus decides to forgo the ritual.

  97. And the Pharisee.

  98. And probably all of his guests.

  99. Just sort of express their surprise.

  100. And their amazement.

  101. Like who does this guy think he is?

  102. He doesn't need.

  103. To cleanse his hands.

  104. After being out among the unclean masses.

  105. Well this turns out to be the spark that sets Jesus off.

  106. And truthfully.

  107. Jesus knows that he hasn't just been invited over.

  108. For a nice meal with the Pharisees.

  109. And so.

  110. This is where it's just.

  111. We're going to cut right to it.

  112. And Jesus.

  113. Starts to speak.

  114. Verse 39.

  115. Then the Lord said to him.

  116. Now then.

  117. You Pharisees.

  118. Clean the outside.

  119. Of the cup.

  120. And dish.

  121. But inside.

  122. You are full of greed.

  123. And wickedness.

  124. You foolish people.

  125. Did not the one.

  126. Who made.

  127. The outside.

  128. Make.

  129. The inside.

  130. Also.

  131. So he just tears into them.

  132. You Pharisees.

  133. Are a bunch of hypocrites.

  134. You're all concerned with.

  135. Outward appearances.

  136. While on the inside.

  137. You guys are full of greed.

  138. And wickedness.

  139. He says.

  140. You're like a guy.

  141. Who just washes the outside of the dish.

  142. So that it looks good.

  143. On the outside.

  144. To everybody who sees.

  145. But then on the inside.

  146. Of the bowl.

  147. It's filthy.

  148. It's nasty.

  149. And he calls them fools.

  150. He says.

  151. You guys are a bunch of fools.

  152. You think God only cares.

  153. About the external.

  154. How foolish.

  155. God.

  156. God sees.

  157. And cares about.

  158. Who you are.

  159. On the inside.

  160. Just as much as.

  161. The outside.

  162. You might be able to fool others.

  163. Who are looking at you.

  164. Watching you.

  165. But you can't fool God.

  166. God.

  167. Verse 41.

  168. Jesus says.

  169. Now as for what is inside you.

  170. Be generous to the poor.

  171. And everything will be clean for you.

  172. Another translation.

  173. Says it this way.

  174. But give from your heart.

  175. To those in need.

  176. And then everything will be clean for you.

  177. the Pharisees were known for putting on a show with their gifts

  178. they weren't giving from the heart

  179. because they actually cared about people

  180. Jesus alludes to this another time when he tells his followers

  181. not to be like some who when they give to the needy

  182. they announce it with trumpets

  183. so that they can be seen by others and honored by others

  184. Jesus basically saying you give to the needy to look clean and polished and good on the outside

  185. well you might fool other people

  186. but you can't fool God

  187. don't worry about the external

  188. and what other people think or see

  189. worry about the inside

  190. what's in your heart

  191. let your gifts

  192. your generosity

  193. your kindness

  194. your compassion

  195. come out of your heart

  196. give out of that

  197. and then everything will be clean for you

  198. the externals will be clean

  199. because they flow from a good and clean and right heart

  200. and then from here Jesus just

  201. digs in even more

  202. woe to you Pharisees

  203. because you give God a tenth of your mint

  204. rue

  205. and all other kinds of garden herbs

  206. but you neglect justice

  207. and the love of God

  208. you should have practiced the latter without leaving the former

  209. undone

  210. that word woe basically means warning

  211. or tragedy

  212. God's judgment is coming

  213. you're in deep trouble with him

  214. why?

  215. Jesus says because you're so meticulous as to give a tenth

  216. not just of your wages

  217. but even of your herbs

  218. from your herb garden

  219. can you imagine that?

  220. one mint leave for

  221. the Lord

  222. nine for me

  223. one for the tithe

  224. nine for me

  225. they're so meticulously focused on that

  226. and Jesus says

  227. yet you

  228. you neglect

  229. justice

  230. you neglect

  231. the love of God

  232. itself

  233. they've missed the whole point

  234. again

  235. you might be fooling others

  236. with this sort of

  237. appearance of righteousness

  238. but you can't fool God

  239. they were doing all kinds of religious things

  240. including this hand washing

  241. things that have the appearance of righteousness

  242. but it wasn't out of a love for God

  243. he keeps going

  244. woe to you Pharisees

  245. because you love the most important seats in the synagogues

  246. and respectful greetings in the marketplace

  247. just a warning about pride

  248. you love the attention from other people

  249. you're proud

  250. you're arrogant

  251. in your heart

  252. it's all about you

  253. he keeps going

  254. woe to you

  255. because you are like unmarked graves

  256. which people walk over without knowing it

  257. according to Old Testament law

  258. touching a dead body

  259. made you unclean

  260. and God had given a sort of set of purity laws

  261. they weren't to touch dead bodies

  262. and if they did

  263. if they had to

  264. they would be unclean

  265. and that meant they wouldn't be able to go to the tabernacle

  266. or the temple

  267. until they'd waited a certain period of time

  268. so there was purity laws

  269. that God gave

  270. but the Pharisees had gone way beyond this

  271. they had added all kinds of man-made laws and rules

  272. this washing of hands was one of them

  273. they would cleanse the dishes and the utensils in their house

  274. and go on and on with it

  275. but Jesus basically says

  276. forget the cleansing of your hands

  277. you yourselves are as unclean as a grave

  278. or a tomb with dead bodies inside

  279. and what's worse

  280. he says

  281. you're basically infecting and defiling other people

  282. who are following you

  283. without them even realizing it

  284. you guys think you're guides to the blind

  285. to lead them to heaven

  286. to the path of life

  287. but in reality

  288. your false religion is leading them into death

  289. to the grave

  290. then one of the experts in the law answered him

  291. teacher when you say these things

  292. you insult us also

  293. Jesus replied

  294. and you experts in the law

  295. woe to you

  296. because you load people down

  297. with burdens they can hardly carry

  298. and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them

  299. woe to you

  300. because you build tombs for the prophets

  301. and it was your ancestors who killed them

  302. so you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did

  303. they killed the prophets

  304. and you build their tombs

  305. because of this

  306. God in his wisdom said

  307. I will send them prophets and apostles

  308. some of whom they will kill

  309. and others

  310. they will persecute

  311. therefore this generation

  312. will be held responsible

  313. for the blood of all the prophets

  314. that has been shed

  315. since the beginning

  316. of the world

  317. from the blood of Abel

  318. to the blood of Zechariah

  319. who was killed between the altar

  320. and the sanctuary

  321. yes

  322. I tell you

  323. this generation

  324. will be held responsible

  325. for it all

  326. Jesus just lets them have it

  327. his denunciation

  328. could hardly be stronger

  329. maybe the religious lawyers

  330. thought that

  331. they were kind of separate

  332. from the Pharisees

  333. but they were taking offense

  334. at the things

  335. Jesus was saying

  336. to the Pharisees

  337. and Jesus just

  338. turns it right on them

  339. as well

  340. you think it's just them

  341. in danger of God's judgment

  342. woe to you too

  343. all your extra rules

  344. and laws

  345. and traditions

  346. they haven't helped people

  347. obey God

  348. the people look to you

  349. for spiritual wisdom

  350. and guidance

  351. but all you're doing

  352. is loading them down

  353. with a burden

  354. that they can't carry

  355. you don't even care about them

  356. you're not even willing

  357. to lift one finger

  358. to help them with this

  359. you guys are just like

  360. your fathers

  361. who rejected

  362. the word of God

  363. who killed

  364. the prophets

  365. sent to them

  366. you kind of just

  367. finish and endorse

  368. what they did

  369. by building places

  370. of burial

  371. for them

  372. he says

  373. you will be responsible

  374. for the blood

  375. of all the prophets

  376. that have been killed

  377. from the first one

  378. to the last one

  379. scathing

  380. remarks

  381. from Jesus

  382. but maybe

  383. verse 52

  384. is

  385. one of the hardest

  386. things for them

  387. to hear

  388. woe to you

  389. experts in the law

  390. because you have

  391. taken away

  392. the key

  393. to knowledge

  394. you yourselves

  395. have not entered

  396. and you have

  397. hindered those

  398. who were entering

  399. like imagine

  400. hearing this

  401. when it comes

  402. to the door

  403. to knowledge

  404. I mean these

  405. guys are considered

  406. the experts

  407. in the law

  408. Jesus says

  409. you haven't given

  410. people the key

  411. you've taken it

  412. away from them

  413. you guys are

  414. ignorant

  415. you haven't

  416. entered

  417. and even worse

  418. you're making it

  419. more difficult

  420. for those who

  421. are trying to

  422. when Jesus

  423. went outside

  424. the Pharisees

  425. and the teachers

  426. of the law

  427. began to

  428. oppose him

  429. fiercely

  430. and to

  431. besiege him

  432. with questions

  433. waiting to

  434. catch him

  435. in something

  436. he might

  437. say

  438. so now

  439. they're

  440. really mad

  441. Jesus

  442. just called

  443. them out

  444. on this

  445. he put

  446. his finger

  447. on

  448. their hypocrisy

  449. their pride

  450. their arrogance

  451. he spoke

  452. the truth

  453. when he accused

  454. them of misleading

  455. people

  456. and hindering

  457. them

  458. leading them

  459. astray

  460. he says

  461. you guys

  462. are in

  463. deeper

  464. trouble

  465. than you

  466. even

  467. know

  468. God's

  469. fed up

  470. with

  471. this

  472. and he's

  473. got it

  474. coming

  475. for you

  476. so maybe

  477. this morning

  478. if you

  479. are here

  480. and you've

  481. ever felt

  482. fed up

  483. with religious

  484. hypocrisy

  485. you're not

  486. the only

  487. one

  488. God

  489. hates

  490. it

  491. Jesus

  492. was fed

  493. up with

  494. it too

  495. I love

  496. how Jesus

  497. just sort

  498. of

  499. tells it

  500. like it

  501. is

  502. fearlessly

  503. to these

  504. guys

  505. I mean

  506. this is

  507. in part

  508. what will

  509. lead to

  510. his death

  511. saying

  512. these sorts

  513. of things

  514. to them

  515. and

  516. you know

  517. it's pretty

  518. easy for us

  519. to hear

  520. some of

  521. these words

  522. and

  523. sort of

  524. cheer for

  525. Jesus

  526. yeah

  527. go

  528. you tell

  529. them

  530. but I

  531. hope that

  532. Jesus

  533. words

  534. to them

  535. make

  536. you

  537. squirm

  538. a little

  539. as well

  540. and

  541. unsettle

  542. you a

  543. little

  544. bit

  545. those

  546. of us

  547. who call

  548. ourselves

  549. Christians

  550. and have

  551. a good

  552. reputation

  553. and

  554. go to

  555. church

  556. and hang

  557. out with

  558. the religious

  559. crowd

  560. we're

  561. especially

  562. vulnerable

  563. to hypocrisy

  564. and I

  565. think we've

  566. all done

  567. it

  568. haven't

  569. we

  570. it's

  571. easy

  572. to

  573. pretend

  574. it's

  575. easy

  576. to sort

  577. of

  578. put on

  579. the show

  580. for others

  581. to do

  582. the things

  583. we do

  584. to be

  585. seen

  586. by

  587. others

  588. the things

  589. that will

  590. make others

  591. think well

  592. of us

  593. or compliment

  594. us

  595. and so

  596. as much

  597. as we

  598. should

  599. cheer

  600. that Jesus

  601. put the

  602. religious

  603. hypocrites

  604. in their

  605. place

  606. I hope

  607. that we

  608. also

  609. take a

  610. moment

  611. to

  612. think

  613. about

  614. whether

  615. any

  616. of

  617. these

  618. words

  619. of

  620. rebuke

  621. are

  622. for

  623. us

  624. and if

  625. we're

  626. not

  627. willing

  628. even

  629. to

  630. go

  631. there

  632. even

  633. to

  634. consider

  635. if

  636. we're

  637. like

  638. the

  639. Pharisees

  640. then

  641. maybe

  642. it's

  643. because

  644. we

  645. are

  646. proud

  647. maybe

  648. it's

  649. because

  650. we are

  651. self

  652. righteous

  653. like

  654. they

  655. were

  656. one

  657. of the

  658. central

  659. messages

  660. of

  661. Jesus

  662. here

  663. is

  664. that

  665. the

  666. inside

  667. of us

  668. matters

  669. just

  670. as much

  671. as the

  672. outside

  673. if not

  674. more

  675. when it

  676. comes

  677. to

  678. the

  679. externals

  680. the

  681. outside

  682. our

  683. behavior

  684. the

  685. things

  686. that

  687. we

  688. say

  689. we

  690. might

  691. be

  692. able

  693. to

  694. fool

  695. other

  696. people

  697. but

  698. we

  699. can't

  700. fool

  701. God

  702. it's

  703. foolish

  704. to

  705. even

  706. think

  707. that

  708. we

  709. can

  710. he

  711. sees

  712. and

  713. knows

  714. the

  715. very

  716. feelings

  717. and

  718. thoughts

  719. of

  720. our

  721. hearts

  722. he

  723. knows

  724. why

  725. we

  726. really

  727. do

  728. and

  729. say

  730. the

  731. things

  732. that

  733. we

  734. do

  735. and

  736. so

  737. I

  738. think

  739. the

  740. first

  741. thing

  742. Jesus

  743. would

  744. have

  745. us

  746. ask

  747. ourselves

  748. as

  749. we

  750. consider

  751. these

  752. words

  753. to

  754. the

  755. Pharisees

  756. is

  757. what

  758. about

  759. me

  760. am

  761. I

  762. guilty

  763. of

  764. these

  765. things

  766. have

  767. I

  768. been

  769. doing

  770. these

  771. things

  772. what

  773. does

  774. the

  775. inside

  776. of

  777. my

  778. dish

  779. look

  780. like

  781. and

  782. have

  783. I

  784. been

  785. seeking

  786. purity

  787. and

  788. cleanliness

  789. in

  790. here

  791. in

  792. my

  793. heart

  794. in

  795. my

  796. thoughts

  797. or

  798. have

  799. I

  800. been

  801. neglecting

  802. love

  803. for

  804. God

  805. in

  806. here

  807. and

  808. just

  809. polishing

  810. the

  811. dish

  812. on

  813. the

  814. outside

  815. some

  816. of

  817. my

  818. favorite

  819. words

  820. are

  821. those

  822. of

  823. David

  824. Psalm

  825. 139

  826. this

  827. was his

  828. prayer

  829. to the

  830. Lord

  831. he

  832. said

  833. search

  834. me

  835. God

  836. and

  837. know

  838. my

  839. heart

  840. trust

  841. me

  842. and

  843. know

  844. my

  845. anxious

  846. thoughts

  847. see if

  848. there is

  849. any

  850. offensive

  851. way

  852. in

  853. me

  854. and

  855. lead

  856. me

  857. in

  858. the

  859. way

  860. everlasting

  861. it's

  862. an

  863. awesome

  864. prayer

  865. an

  866. invitation

  867. and

  868. I

  869. hope

  870. that

  871. we

  872. can

  873. make

  874. that

  875. our

  876. invitation

  877. again

  878. today

  879. Lord

  880. look into

  881. my

  882. heart

  883. is

  884. there

  885. anything

  886. in

  887. me

  888. that

  889. needs

  890. cleansing

  891. and

  892. come

  893. and

  894. cleanse

  895. it

  896. and

  897. wash

  898. it

  899. the

  900. truth

  901. is

  902. that

  903. the

  904. inside

  905. of

  906. all

  907. of

  908. us

  909. is

  910. like

  911. a

  912. dirty

  913. dish

  914. hypocrisy

  915. !

  916. is when

  917. we try

  918. to hide

  919. that

  920. and

  921. ignore

  922. that

  923. and

  924. spend

  925. all

  926. that

  927. time

  928. and

  929. attention

  930. just

  931. polishing

  932. the

  933. outside

  934. Jesus

  935. warns

  936. us

  937. doing

  938. that

  939. is

  940. spiritually

  941. dangerous

  942. woe

  943. to

  944. you

  945. but

  946. on

  947. the

  948. flip

  949. side

  950. spiritual

  951. integrity

  952. happens

  953. when we

  954. bring

  955. the

  956. dish

  957. of

  958. our

  959. hearts

  960. to

  961. God

  962. and

  963. we

  964. ask

  965. him

  966. to

  967. cleanse

  968. it

  969. clean

  970. it

  971. wash

  972. it

  973. scour

  974. it

  975. and

  976. then

  977. when

  978. someone

  979. else

  980. comes

  981. along

  982. and

  983. says

  984. my

  985. your

  986. dish

  987. looks

  988. good

  989. what

  990. should

  991. we

  992. do

  993. we

  994. should

  995. give

  996. the

  997. credit

  998. to

  999. God

  1000. and

  1001. we

  1002. should

  1003. be

  1004. honest

  1005. about

  1006. the

  1007. dirtiness

  1008. that

  1009. remains

  1010. inside

  1011. at

  1012. the

  1013. end

  1014. of

  1015. the

  1016. day

  1017. you

  1018. might

  1019. be

  1020. able

  1021. to

  1022. fool

  1023. others

  1024. but

  1025. you

  1026. can't

  1027. fool

  1028. God

  1029. there's

  1030. only

  1031. one

  1032. who

  1033. can

  1034. make

  1035. the

  1036. inside

  1037. of

  1038. our

  1039. dish

  1040. clean

  1041. and

  1042. beautiful

  1043. and

  1044. that's

  1045. Jesus

  1046. and so

  1047. we

  1048. have

  1049. to

  1050. give

  1051. our

  1052. time

  1053. and

  1054. attention

  1055. to

  1056. seeking

  1057. his

  1058. cleansing

  1059. work

  1060. inside

  1061. of

  1062. us

  1063. and

  1064. if

  1065. we

  1066. do

  1067. that

  1068. just

  1069. as

  1070. Jesus

  1071. said

  1072. what

  1073. comes

  1074. out

  1075. will

  1076. be

  1077. clean

  1078. it

  1079. will

  1080. be

  1081. good

  1082. it

  1083. will

  1084. be

  1085. right

  1086. let's

  1087. pray

  1088. father

  1089. in

  1090. heaven

  1091. thank

  1092. you

  1093. for

  1094. these

  1095. words

  1096. they

  1097. are

  1098. sharp

  1099. words

  1100. and

  1101. words

  1102. we

  1103. may

  1104. not

  1105. like

  1106. to

  1107. hear

  1108. especially

  1109. thinking

  1110. about

  1111. ourselves

  1112. but

  1113. we

  1114. thank

  1115. you

  1116. that

  1117. you

  1118. already

  1119. know

  1120. that

  1121. we

  1122. are

  1123. all

  1124. sinners

  1125. and

  1126. that

  1127. didn't

  1128. stop

  1129. you

  1130. from

  1131. sending

  1132. your

  1133. son

  1134. to

  1135. save

  1136. us

  1137. thank

  1138. you

  1139. for

  1140. your

  1141. forgiveness

  1142. and

  1143. your

  1144. cleansing

  1145. thank

  1146. you

  1147. that

  1148. with

  1149. you

  1150. we

  1151. really

  1152. can

  1153. be

  1154. clean

  1155. and

  1156. righteous

  1157. in

  1158. your

  1159. sight

  1160. despite

  1161. our

  1162. many

  1163. sins

  1164. continue

  1165. to

  1166. cleanse

  1167. us

  1168. of

  1169. pride

  1170. let

  1171. us

  1172. not

  1173. live

  1174. as

  1175. hypocrites

  1176. let

  1177. us

  1178. not

  1179. neglect

  1180. our

  1181. relationship

  1182. with

  1183. you

  1184. be

  1185. at

  1186. work

  1187. in

  1188. our

  1189. hearts

  1190. we

  1191. ask

  1192. and

  1193. pray

  1194. for

  1195. your

  1196. name's

  1197. sake

  1198. amen
