  1. Well, last Sunday we heard about how Jesus was invited to the house of a Pharisee for dinner.

  2. ! And after foregoing the ritual washing, to the surprise and scorn of the Pharisees, Jesus began to rebuke the Pharisees and to call them out for their hypocrisy.

  3. And we saw Jesus respond to them with very passionate and strong words.

  4. Then we heard a little bit about what happened after this.

  5. When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to beseech him with questions.

  6. Waiting to catch him in something he might say.

  7. So after saying those things, Jesus exits the house and out come the hornets.

  8. And they are mad.

  9. Can you imagine them besieging Jesus with questions?

  10. And they weren't even looking for the answers.

  11. These were attacking sorts of questions.

  12. Probably they weren't even giving Jesus hardly a chance to respond or to answer.

  13. They were just sort of piling them on and maybe in an attempt to humiliate him.

  14. Or to get him to trip up in his words.

  15. Maybe twisting some of his replies.

  16. And as this is happening, the crowd of witnesses begins to grow.

  17. People passing by stop to watch and to listen.

  18. Some of the crowds of people that maybe left off of Jesus so that he could go in and have dinner with the Pharisees begin to return.

  19. And the number of people, Luke tells us, grows into the thousands.

  20. Luke 12 verse 1.

    Luke 12:1

  21. Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another,

  22. Jesus began to speak first to his disciples.

  23. So can you imagine this?

  24. Can you picture it?

  25. Everybody wants to get closer to see and hear what's going on.

  26. So much so that they're stepping on each other.

  27. They're knocking each other over as they push in towards Jesus.

  28. According to Luke, Jesus begins in this moment to speak to his disciples.

  29. I guess the conversation with the Pharisees was going nowhere.

  30. They aren't really there to listen or to learn.

  31. And so Jesus now turns to his disciples and begins to speak to them.

  32. And the first thing that he says is this.

  33. Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  34. So Jesus has already been rebuking them privately about this in the house.

  35. Now he's doing it publicly.

  36. It's not behind their backs because they're there.

  37. And now he is warning his disciples not to follow or become like the Pharisees.

  38. Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  39. Now why the metaphor of yeast or leaven?

  40. And I think there's two characteristics of yeast that factor into Jesus' meaning.

  41. First, yeast spreads.

  42. It multiplies.

  43. As the Apostle Paul says in Galatians and in his letter to the Corinthians,

  44. a little yeast leavens the whole lump.

  45. And if you've ever made bread, it's quite something, isn't it?

  46. It doesn't take much of those little yeast pellets.

  47. But that whole loaf, that whole batch of dough is soon affected by it.

  48. It begins to rise as the organisms multiply and give off gas.

  49. So yeast is potent stuff.

  50. It spreads.

  51. And then the second thing about yeast is,

  52. once it's mixed into the dough, it's invisible.

  53. You can't even tell the difference between a leavened lump of dough

  54. and an unleavened lump of dough right after the moment it's been done.

  55. It's a thing that happens behind the scenes, slowly and gradually.

  56. And I think these are maybe the things Jesus is emphasizing about the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

  57. Their hypocrisy has the same characteristics.

  58. It's contagious.

  59. It spreads as people imitate them and follow their teaching.

  60. And it's subtle.

  61. It's insidious.

  62. There's things going on that are hidden beneath the surface.

  63. It's kind of what we heard Jesus talking about last Sunday

  64. when he said that they clean the outside of the dish.

  65. The part that people see, they polish that.

  66. But inside, what's hiding in there?

  67. They're full of greed and wickedness, said Jesus.

  68. So hypocrisy can be insidious.

  69. It's kind of like the solid oak bed frame that I bought one time off of Kijiji.

  70. The pictures weren't all that clear online.

  71. But it looked good.

  72. Well, after examining it more closely,

  73. it was actually just a thin oak-like veneer on particle board.

  74. Don't be fooled by them, says Jesus.

  75. Don't be sucked into following their ways.

  76. Don't do as they do.

  77. Their religion of rules is a show of external righteousness.

  78. Meanwhile, on the inside, they do not love God.

  79. They're neglecting what is just.

  80. What is right.

  81. They're doing things that look righteous,

  82. but it's only for the attention

  83. and for the praise of others,

  84. for the benefit that it brings to them.

  85. Be on your guard against that attitude,

  86. against that kind of behavior.

  87. It's tricky.

  88. It's subtle.

  89. But its effect is powerful.

  90. Don't let yourself slip into the hypocrisy of the Pharisees.

  91. And then Jesus gives us this very sobering truth

  92. to help us see why faking our religion is utterly foolish.

  93. Let me just read it all in one go

  94. so that we can get the flow of thought here.

  95. He says,

  96. Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees,

  97. which is hypocrisy.

  98. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed

  99. or hidden that will not be made known.

  100. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight,

  101. and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms

  102. will be proclaimed from the roofs.

  103. What a powerful and sobering truth.

  104. It's very proverbial the way Jesus says it.

  105. It's kind of got that poetic parallelism

  106. that we're used to seeing in the book of Proverbs.

  107. There's nothing concealed that will not be disclosed

  108. or hidden that will not be made known.

  109. What you have said in the dark

  110. will be heard in the daylight,

  111. and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms

  112. will be proclaimed from the roofs.

  113. All the secrets we try to keep,

  114. all the things we try to hide,

  115. they will all come out in the end.

  116. They will all be known eventually.

  117. And the first application of this, I think,

  118. is to the Pharisees themselves.

  119. Jesus is basically saying,

  120. whatever they're hiding with their hypocrisy,

  121. they won't get away with it.

  122. It's all going to come out.

  123. But then the second application is

  124. for Jesus' followers,

  125. the ones that he's talking to right now,

  126. the ones he's warning.

  127. He's saying to them,

  128. and by extension to us as followers of Jesus,

  129. don't be like the Pharisees in their hypocrisy,

  130. because anything you try

  131. to hide or keep secret

  132. is going to come out in the end.

  133. And the way Jesus says it,

  134. it's powerful.

  135. What you have whispered in the ear

  136. in the inner rooms

  137. will be proclaimed from the rooftops.

  138. That word for inner room

  139. was used to describe the storeroom of the house.

  140. And so you almost get this picture here

  141. of someone pulling another person

  142. into the storage closet

  143. to whisper some things to them,

  144. closing the door,

  145. speaking in a hushed voice

  146. so nobody else inside

  147. can hear what's being said.

  148. But then imagine that

  149. as you do this with someone

  150. only to find out

  151. that somehow

  152. somebody heard everything that you said,

  153. and then they proceed

  154. to shout that out loud

  155. for everyone to hear.

  156. There is nothing concealed

  157. that will not be disclosed

  158. or hidden

  159. that will not be made known.

  160. The attitude

  161. and the behavior

  162. of the Pharisees

  163. was,

  164. I'm going to call it

  165. religious

  166. fakery.

  167. And Jesus is saying,

  168. don't be like them

  169. because your fakery

  170. will eventually

  171. be exposed.

  172. In fact,

  173. in reality,

  174. God already sees

  175. and knows

  176. the things

  177. that we are hiding

  178. and the secrets

  179. that we are keeping.

  180. Listen to these words

  181. from Hebrews 4,

    Hebrews 4:13

  182. verse 13.

  183. Nothing

  184. in all creation

  185. is hidden

  186. from God's sight.

  187. everything

  188. is uncovered

  189. and laid bare

  190. before the eyes

  191. of him

  192. to whom

  193. we must give

  194. account.

  195. So in a manner

  196. of speaking,

  197. there is a recorder

  198. recording

  199. everything

  200. that we do

  201. and say.

  202. Even the thoughts

  203. and attitudes

  204. of our hearts,

  205. God is taking

  206. it all in.

  207. And one day

  208. we will have to

  209. answer to him

  210. for all of it.

  211. He knows,

  212. he sees

  213. all that we try

  214. to hide

  215. and keep secret.

  216. Everything

  217. we think,

  218. everything

  219. we do,

  220. even in private.

  221. and according

  222. to Jesus,

  223. it's just

  224. a matter

  225. of time

  226. before God

  227. brings all

  228. those things

  229. to the full

  230. light of day

  231. and goes

  232. public with

  233. them

  234. in a

  235. spectacular

  236. way.

  237. In Jesus'

  238. words,

  239. they will be

  240. proclaimed

  241. from the

  242. rooftops.

  243. That's a

  244. pretty sobering

  245. thought,

  246. isn't it?

  247. And as

  248. we've said,

  249. it's first

  250. a warning

  251. to those

  252. who are

  253. engaged

  254. in

  255. religious

  256. fakery,

  257. but it's

  258. also a

  259. motivating

  260. truth

  261. for us

  262. who are

  263. Jesus'

  264. disciples.

  265. Jesus is

  266. helping us

  267. see

  268. that if we

  269. choose the

  270. way of

  271. religious

  272. fakery

  273. like the

  274. Pharisees,

  275. it's not

  276. going to

  277. work out

  278. for us

  279. in the

  280. end.

  281. there's

  282. going to

  283. be a

  284. massive

  285. public

  286. exposing

  287. of all

  288. that we

  289. work so

  290. hard to

  291. hide

  292. to our

  293. great shame

  294. and

  295. embarrassment.

  296. And if

  297. we are

  298. wise,

  299. we will

  300. listen to

  301. Jesus'

  302. warning

  303. and we

  304. can be

  305. spared all

  306. that.

  307. We can

  308. choose the

  309. way of

  310. sincerity

  311. and

  312. integrity

  313. and true

  314. faith.

  315. Of course,

  316. the timing

  317. of this

  318. great

  319. public

  320. exposing

  321. is the

  322. final day

  323. of judgment.

  324. Jesus

  325. isn't saying

  326. here that

  327. most of the

  328. time people

  329. will get

  330. caught

  331. and their

  332. secret sins

  333. will become

  334. known.

  335. No,

  336. it's bigger

  337. than that.

  338. It's far

  339. more certain

  340. than that.

  341. Jesus

  342. says there

  343. is nothing

  344. concealed

  345. that will

  346. not be

  347. disclosed.

  348. Everything

  349. we have

  350. thought,

  351. said,

  352. or done

  353. in secret

  354. will come

  355. out.

  356. And here's

  357. where this

  358. is going.

  359. Because

  360. this is

  361. true,

  362. Jesus

  363. is essentially

  364. in a way

  365. saying you

  366. need to

  367. stop caring

  368. so much

  369. about what

  370. other people

  371. see and

  372. think of

  373. you

  374. as in

  375. trying to

  376. impress

  377. them

  378. or be

  379. liked by

  380. them

  381. or be

  382. respected

  383. and praised

  384. by them.

  385. And you

  386. need to

  387. start caring

  388. about where

  389. you stand

  390. with God.

  391. Listen to

  392. how Jesus

  393. says it

  394. in the next

  395. verses.

  396. He says,

  397. I tell you,

  398. my friends,

  399. do not be

  400. afraid of

  401. those who

  402. kill the

  403. body,

  404. and after

  405. that can

  406. do no

  407. more.

  408. But I

  409. will show

  410. you whom

  411. you should

  412. fear.

  413. Fear him

  414. who after

  415. your body

  416. has been

  417. killed

  418. has authority

  419. to throw

  420. you

  421. into hell.

  422. yes,

  423. I tell

  424. you,

  425. fear him.

  426. Now there's

  427. a lot in

  428. these words.

  429. We're going

  430. to unpack

  431. it.

  432. Some of

  433. you are

  434. maybe shocked

  435. that I

  436. just read

  437. this in

  438. public,

  439. said the

  440. word hell

  441. out loud

  442. in public.

  443. Others of

  444. you are

  445. maybe shocked

  446. and wondering

  447. if God

  448. is cruel

  449. or if

  450. Jesus is

  451. insensitive

  452. to be

  453. talking about

  454. throwing

  455. people

  456. into

  457. hell.

  458. But let's

  459. just sort

  460. of unpack

  461. this.

  462. Let's take

  463. it from

  464. the top

  465. here.

  466. The first

  467. question is

  468. why might

  469. some of

  470. Jesus'

  471. disciples

  472. fear

  473. being

  474. killed?

  475. So he's

  476. talking about

  477. do not

  478. be afraid

  479. of those

  480. who kill

  481. the body

  482. and after

  483. that can

  484. do no

  485. more.

  486. Why might

  487. some of

  488. Jesus'

  489. disciples

  490. fear being

  491. killed?

  492. Well,

  493. Jesus,

  494. the one

  495. that they're

  496. following,

  497. he just

  498. lambasted

  499. the Pharisees

  500. and the

  501. religious

  502. lawyers.

  503. The

  504. disciples

  505. of Jesus

  506. see how

  507. angry

  508. they are

  509. becoming.

  510. How furious

  511. they are.

  512. They know

  513. that given

  514. the right

  515. opportunity

  516. they would

  517. kill Jesus.

  518. And so

  519. the temptation

  520. for the

  521. disciples

  522. of Jesus

  523. is

  524. to

  525. compromise,

  526. to

  527. submit

  528. to the

  529. Pharisees

  530. and their

  531. teachings.

  532. Otherwise,

  533. the way

  534. things seem

  535. to be

  536. going,

  537. they fear

  538. not only

  539. that Jesus

  540. will be

  541. killed,

  542. but that

  543. they'll be

  544. next

  545. for following

  546. him.

  547. And Jesus

  548. says,

  549. don't be

  550. afraid

  551. afraid

  552. of

  553. them.

  554. The

  555. worst

  556. they can

  557. do

  558. is kill

  559. your body.

  560. But there

  561. is a far

  562. worse thing

  563. that can

  564. happen to

  565. a person,

  566. says Jesus.

  567. I will

  568. show you

  569. whom you

  570. should fear.

  571. There is

  572. one who

  573. after your

  574. body has

  575. been killed

  576. has authority

  577. to throw

  578. you

  579. into hell.

  580. he's

  581. the one

  582. you should

  583. fear.

  584. Jesus

  585. basically

  586. says,

  587. don't worry

  588. about what

  589. those

  590. hypocrites

  591. might do

  592. to you.

  593. Worry

  594. about what

  595. God might

  596. do to

  597. you.

  598. If you

  599. should live

  600. for their

  601. approval.

  602. If you

  603. should live

  604. wickedly

  605. as they

  606. do.

  607. And by

  608. this point,

  609. I think it's

  610. pretty clear

  611. that Jesus

  612. is talking

  613. about

  614. judgment

  615. day.

  616. That's

  617. the time

  618. when all

  619. the hidden

  620. things,

  621. when all

  622. the secret

  623. sins

  624. will be

  625. revealed.

  626. God

  627. will be

  628. our judge

  629. and Jesus

  630. says he

  631. has authority

  632. to throw

  633. you

  634. into hell.

  635. Jesus

  636. had no

  637. problems

  638. speaking the

  639. truth

  640. about

  641. hell.

  642. In this

  643. moment,

  644. he's

  645. surrounded

  646. by a

  647. crowd

  648. of

  649. thousands

  650. and he's

  651. not afraid

  652. or ashamed

  653. to warn

  654. people of

  655. what truly

  656. awaits

  657. if they

  658. persist

  659. in ignoring

  660. God.

  661. God is

  662. the judge

  663. and he

  664. has authority

  665. says Jesus

  666. to throw

  667. you into

  668. hell.

  669. hell.

  670. Let's

  671. talk about

  672. hell for a

  673. moment.

  674. What is

  675. hell?

  676. Hell is

  677. a place

  678. of punishment.

  679. It's

  680. the ultimate

  681. place of

  682. punishment.

  683. And God

  684. doesn't throw

  685. people in

  686. there because

  687. he is

  688. cruel.

  689. Hell

  690. exists

  691. because God

  692. is just.

  693. It exists

  694. because God

  695. is good.

  696. he will

  697. not allow

  698. evil to

  699. go unchecked

  700. forever.

  701. He will

  702. not allow

  703. people to

  704. just get

  705. away with

  706. the wrongs

  707. they have

  708. done or

  709. to persist

  710. in doing

  711. evil because

  712. he is

  713. good.

  714. People who

  715. have done

  716. wrong,

  717. which is

  718. all of us,

  719. will either

  720. have their

  721. sins atoned

  722. for by

  723. receiving the

  724. merciful gift

  725. of salvation

  726. that God

  727. offers through

  728. Jesus,

  729. or they

  730. will receive

  731. what their

  732. sins truly

  733. deserve,

  734. which is

  735. to be

  736. thrown into

  737. hell,

  738. that place

  739. of ultimate

  740. punishment

  741. after being

  742. judged

  743. on judgment

  744. day.

  745. We as

  746. human beings

  747. sometimes

  748. criticize God

  749. for sending

  750. people to

  751. hell.

  752. hell.

  753. We think

  754. or even

  755. say that

  756. hell is

  757. too harsh.

  758. But when

  759. we say

  760. things like

  761. that,

  762. basically

  763. we're

  764. setting

  765. ourselves

  766. up as

  767. judge

  768. over God.

  769. We're

  770. saying that

  771. we know

  772. better than

  773. he does

  774. the seriousness

  775. of our

  776. sin and

  777. what punishment

  778. fits the

  779. crime.

  780. well that's

  781. ridiculous.

  782. That's us,

  783. the creature,

  784. criticizing the

  785. creator.

  786. That's us

  787. finding fault

  788. with him

  789. when the only

  790. fault is

  791. with us.

  792. no,

  793. God is

  794. just.

  795. He ensures

  796. in his

  797. justice that

  798. the punishment

  799. fits the

  800. crime.

  801. If we do

  802. not receive

  803. his forgiveness

  804. and mercy

  805. which is

  806. the way

  807. out of

  808. that punishment

  809. through

  810. Jesus,

  811. then God

  812. ensures that

  813. we are judged

  814. fairly for

  815. what we

  816. thought,

  817. did,

  818. and said.

  819. And God

  820. sees to it

  821. that we get

  822. no more

  823. than we

  824. deserve

  825. and no

  826. less.

  827. According

  828. to God,

  829. hell,

  830. a place of

  831. terrible

  832. punishment,

  833. is what

  834. our sins

  835. deserve.

  836. What we

  837. often fail

  838. to understand

  839. is that any

  840. rejection,

  841. any

  842. rebellion,

  843. any

  844. disobedience

  845. against our

  846. glorious

  847. creator

  848. is

  849. unimaginably

  850. evil.

  851. And so

  852. hell is

  853. the fitting

  854. punishment

  855. for our

  856. sins.

  857. The good

  858. news

  859. is that

  860. this story

  861. of Jesus

  862. goes on

  863. from here

  864. until he

  865. offers himself

  866. as a

  867. sacrifice

  868. on the

  869. cross

  870. to

  871. atone

  872. for our

  873. sins,

  874. to take

  875. away

  876. our

  877. guilt.

  878. And so

  879. God,

  880. because he

  881. is a

  882. loving and

  883. merciful God,

  884. has provided

  885. a way of

  886. escape

  887. from hell.

  888. And it's

  889. through

  890. receiving

  891. Jesus.

  892. It's through

  893. repenting

  894. of our

  895. sins

  896. and putting

  897. our

  898. faith in

  899. him.

  900. But let's

  901. get back

  902. to Jesus'

  903. point here.

  904. All of

  905. what he's

  906. saying here

  907. is aimed

  908. at a

  909. particular

  910. point.

  911. Why is

  912. he telling

  913. us about

  914. hell?

  915. Because

  916. Jesus wants

  917. his followers,

  918. he wants

  919. us,

  920. to fear

  921. God.

  922. We really

  923. have only

  924. two choices.

  925. We can

  926. fear man,

  927. or we can

  928. fear God.

  929. we can

  930. care so

  931. much about

  932. what others

  933. see in

  934. us and

  935. think of

  936. us,

  937. or we can

  938. care so

  939. much about

  940. what God

  941. sees in

  942. us and

  943. thinks of

  944. us.

  945. We might

  946. be tempted

  947. to compromise,

  948. to avoid

  949. persecution,

  950. or to

  951. avoid becoming

  952. unpopular.

  953. But Jesus

  954. wants us to

  955. be stirred by

  956. this truth,

  957. that there is

  958. something far

  959. worse than

  960. being persecuted,

  961. far worse than

  962. being unpopular,

  963. and that's

  964. getting what we

  965. truly deserve

  966. from God

  967. for our

  968. sins.

  969. Do you

  970. fear God?

  971. Do you

  972. fear God?

  973. Do you

  974. fear God?

  975. Some of you

  976. may feel

  977. convicted by

  978. the Spirit

  979. of God

  980. in this

  981. very moment,

  982. to the

  983. point that

  984. you're even

  985. now admitting

  986. to yourself,

  987. no,

  988. I haven't

  989. been fearing

  990. God.

  991. I haven't

  992. been taking

  993. Him seriously.

  994. Others of

  995. you might be

  996. wondering,

  997. I think I

  998. fear God,

  999. I agree with

  1000. this,

  1001. I know

  1002. that's the

  1003. right thing

  1004. to do,

  1005. but how do

  1006. I know

  1007. if I truly

  1008. fear God?

  1009. And the

  1010. Bible's

  1011. answer to

  1012. that is

  1013. kind of

  1014. simple.

  1015. Are you

  1016. making a

  1017. conscious,

  1018. daily effort

  1019. to walk in

  1020. obedience to

  1021. God's

  1022. commandments?

  1023. Obedience

  1024. is the

  1025. evidence that

  1026. the fear of

  1027. God is

  1028. present in

  1029. your heart.

  1030. It's kind

  1031. of like

  1032. fire.

  1033. if you

  1034. have a

  1035. genuine

  1036. fear of

  1037. fire,

  1038. then it

  1039. changes how

  1040. you behave

  1041. around it.

  1042. You're

  1043. careful near

  1044. it.

  1045. You won't

  1046. just plunge

  1047. your hand

  1048. into the

  1049. flame.

  1050. Neither

  1051. will you

  1052. make a

  1053. fire in

  1054. your living

  1055. room,

  1056. because you

  1057. fear it.

  1058. You know

  1059. what it

  1060. can do

  1061. when it

  1062. gets out

  1063. of control.

  1064. And that

  1065. reality,

  1066. it controls

  1067. you,

  1068. it influences

  1069. you in a

  1070. good way.

  1071. way.

  1072. It's the

  1073. same with

  1074. God.

  1075. If we

  1076. really fear

  1077. Him,

  1078. the reality

  1079. of who

  1080. He is

  1081. controls

  1082. us.

  1083. It

  1084. influences

  1085. us in

  1086. a good

  1087. way.

  1088. We

  1089. become

  1090. careful

  1091. to obey

  1092. Him,

  1093. because we

  1094. believe the

  1095. truth of

  1096. His word.

  1097. That doing

  1098. otherwise would

  1099. be dangerous,

  1100. there would

  1101. be consequences.

  1102. I'll just

  1103. switch over

  1104. to this.

  1105. back to

  1106. the question,

  1107. are you

  1108. making a

  1109. conscious,

  1110. sincere,

  1111. daily effort

  1112. to walk in

  1113. obedience to

  1114. God's

  1115. commands?

  1116. Do you

  1117. fear God?

  1118. If your

  1119. answer to

  1120. that question

  1121. is no,

  1122. then hear

  1123. these words

  1124. of Jesus

  1125. again.

  1126. You need

  1127. to change

  1128. that.

  1129. You

  1130. should fear

  1131. Him,

  1132. says Jesus.

  1133. He has

  1134. the authority

  1135. to throw

  1136. you into

  1137. hell.

  1138. will you

  1139. continue to

  1140. disregard

  1141. Him?

  1142. Or will

  1143. you submit

  1144. yourself to

  1145. Him?

  1146. This

  1147. teaching of

  1148. Jesus is

  1149. heavy,

  1150. and it's

  1151. hard.

  1152. And so,

  1153. it might

  1154. surprise us

  1155. what Jesus

  1156. says next.

  1157. Jesus

  1158. turns on a

  1159. dime,

  1160. actually on a

  1161. penny,

  1162. and He

  1163. begins

  1164. reassuring

  1165. His

  1166. followers

  1167. of how

  1168. much

  1169. they

  1170. mean

  1171. to

  1172. God.

  1173. Look at

  1174. the next

  1175. couple

  1176. verses.

  1177. Are not

  1178. five sparrows

  1179. sold for

  1180. two pennies?

  1181. Yet not

  1182. one of

  1183. them is

  1184. forgotten

  1185. by God.

  1186. Indeed,

  1187. the very

  1188. hairs of

  1189. your head

  1190. are all

  1191. numbered.

  1192. Don't

  1193. be afraid.

  1194. You are

  1195. worth more

  1196. than many

  1197. sparrows.

  1198. I love

  1199. these words.

  1200. It's like

  1201. Jesus is

  1202. saying,

  1203. don't come

  1204. to the

  1205. wrong

  1206. conclusion

  1207. here.

  1208. You should

  1209. fear God.

  1210. He does

  1211. have

  1212. authority

  1213. to cast

  1214. you into

  1215. hell,

  1216. but that

  1217. doesn't

  1218. mean He

  1219. doesn't

  1220. care about

  1221. you.

  1222. He cares

  1223. about you

  1224. a lot.

  1225. And Jesus

  1226. gives this

  1227. analogy of

  1228. sparrows.

  1229. What's a

  1230. sparrow

  1231. worth?

  1232. You can

  1233. buy five

  1234. of them

  1235. for two

  1236. cents.

  1237. There's

  1238. not a

  1239. whole lot

  1240. of certainty

  1241. about why

  1242. sparrows were

  1243. even bought

  1244. and sold

  1245. in the

  1246. first place.

  1247. Some are

  1248. suggesting that

  1249. it wasn't

  1250. really

  1251. sparrows,

  1252. but another

  1253. type of

  1254. small bird

  1255. that poor

  1256. people would

  1257. eat.

  1258. They would

  1259. buy it and

  1260. sell it in

  1261. the marketplace.

  1262. But it's

  1263. implied here

  1264. by Jesus'

  1265. statement that

  1266. the birds were

  1267. so small and

  1268. worth so

  1269. little that

  1270. you could get

  1271. five of

  1272. them for

  1273. two of the

  1274. smallest coins

  1275. in circulation.

  1276. And so if we

  1277. do a little bit

  1278. of math,

  1279. each of them

  1280. was worth

  1281. less than

  1282. half a penny.

  1283. And yet

  1284. Jesus says

  1285. not one of

  1286. those little

  1287. birds is

  1288. forgotten by

  1289. God.

  1290. God takes

  1291. notice of

  1292. every single

  1293. one of

  1294. them.

  1295. Think about

  1296. that the next

  1297. time you look

  1298. out the window

  1299. and you see a

  1300. little sparrow

  1301. hopping around.

  1302. But now

  1303. what's Jesus'

  1304. point here?

  1305. If God

  1306. cares that

  1307. much about

  1308. each of the

  1309. smallest,

  1310. most insignificant

  1311. little birds,

  1312. how much

  1313. more does

  1314. he care about

  1315. each one of

  1316. us?

  1317. human beings

  1318. specially made

  1319. in his

  1320. image.

  1321. In fact,

  1322. says Jesus,

  1323. God cares so

  1324. much for you

  1325. that he

  1326. pays attention

  1327. to the

  1328. number of

  1329. hairs on

  1330. your head.

  1331. Indeed,

  1332. the very

  1333. hairs of

  1334. your head

  1335. are all

  1336. numbered.

  1337. even we

  1338. don't know

  1339. or care

  1340. about

  1341. ourselves

  1342. that much.

  1343. But God

  1344. does.

  1345. He knows

  1346. even the

  1347. littlest

  1348. details

  1349. about us.

  1350. He cares

  1351. about those

  1352. things.

  1353. When you

  1354. take a hat

  1355. off where

  1356. you brush

  1357. your hair

  1358. and a

  1359. hair comes

  1360. out and

  1361. falls to

  1362. the ground,

  1363. God

  1364. notices the

  1365. change.

  1366. That's how

  1367. precious and

  1368. valued we

  1369. are to

  1370. him.

  1371. And so

  1372. after telling

  1373. us to fear

  1374. God, like we

  1375. have never

  1376. heard it before

  1377. maybe from

  1378. Jesus,

  1379. Jesus does

  1380. this crazy

  1381. thing and he

  1382. says the

  1383. very opposite

  1384. just a moment

  1385. later.

  1386. fear.

  1387. He says

  1388. don't be

  1389. afraid.

  1390. He says

  1391. fear not.

  1392. You are

  1393. worth more

  1394. than many

  1395. sparrows.

  1396. Now we

  1397. might see

  1398. that as a

  1399. contradiction.

  1400. Fear.

  1401. Don't be

  1402. afraid.

  1403. But it's

  1404. probably more

  1405. of what I'm

  1406. going to

  1407. call a

  1408. relational

  1409. complexity.

  1410. Some

  1411. relationships

  1412. are complex

  1413. and ours

  1414. with God

  1415. is one

  1416. of them.

  1417. We should

  1418. fear him

  1419. and yet at

  1420. the same

  1421. time we

  1422. don't need

  1423. to be

  1424. afraid.

  1425. It's

  1426. right to

  1427. fear him

  1428. and yet

  1429. because of

  1430. his love

  1431. and care

  1432. for us,

  1433. so long

  1434. as we're

  1435. walking

  1436. closely with

  1437. him in

  1438. obedience,

  1439. we don't

  1440. need to

  1441. be afraid.

  1442. A guy

  1443. named John

  1444. Piper gave

  1445. a great

  1446. analogy of

  1447. this and

  1448. I'm actually

  1449. going to

  1450. just take

  1451. steal from

  1452. him the

  1453. core element

  1454. of it and

  1455. tell it

  1456. differently,

  1457. but a

  1458. German

  1459. shepherd is

  1460. a fearsome

  1461. creature,

  1462. especially if

  1463. we do

  1464. things to

  1465. provoke

  1466. that German

  1467. shepherd.

  1468. Maybe we've

  1469. all heard

  1470. or seen

  1471. stories of

  1472. police dogs

  1473. chasing down

  1474. the bad

  1475. guys,

  1476. just sort

  1477. of running

  1478. after them,

  1479. jumping on

  1480. them,

  1481. sinking their

  1482. teeth into

  1483. them and

  1484. taking them

  1485. down to

  1486. the ground.

  1487. If you

  1488. do what

  1489. is right,

  1490. then you

  1491. have nothing

  1492. to fear

  1493. from the

  1494. police dog.

  1495. That German

  1496. shepherd might

  1497. even jump

  1498. into the

  1499. lake to

  1500. save you

  1501. if you're

  1502. out there

  1503. in trouble.

  1504. But hit

  1505. the officer

  1506. in the face

  1507. and that

  1508. dog will

  1509. be all

  1510. over you,

  1511. growling,

  1512. barking,

  1513. biting,

  1514. until you're

  1515. curled up

  1516. like a little

  1517. ball on

  1518. the ground.

  1519. Our

  1520. relationship

  1521. with God

  1522. is kind

  1523. of like

  1524. that.

  1525. If we

  1526. ignore

  1527. him,

  1528. if we

  1529. defy

  1530. him,

  1531. if we

  1532. provoke

  1533. him,

  1534. doing what

  1535. we know

  1536. is wrong,

  1537. then watch

  1538. out.

  1539. He is

  1540. the God

  1541. who will

  1542. bring

  1543. justice

  1544. and has

  1545. authority

  1546. to throw

  1547. us into

  1548. hell.

  1549. But if

  1550. we listen

  1551. to him,

  1552. if we

  1553. draw near

  1554. to him,

  1555. if we

  1556. humble

  1557. ourselves

  1558. before him

  1559. and submit

  1560. to him,

  1561. then we

  1562. have nothing

  1563. to fear.

  1564. He is

  1565. the God

  1566. who loves

  1567. us deeply

  1568. and notices

  1569. even when

  1570. a hair of

  1571. our head

  1572. falls to

  1573. the ground.

  1574. And so

  1575. I want to

  1576. leave you

  1577. with this

  1578. question

  1579. today.

  1580. Where are

  1581. you at

  1582. in your

  1583. relationship

  1584. with

  1585. God?

  1586. Whatever

  1587. your answer

  1588. is to

  1589. that,

  1590. let me

  1591. encourage

  1592. you.

  1593. Draw

  1594. near to

  1595. him.

  1596. Come

  1597. close to

  1598. him.

  1599. Listen

  1600. to him.

  1601. Humble

  1602. yourself

  1603. before

  1604. him.

  1605. If

  1606. you've

  1607. got

  1608. sins,

  1609. if you've

  1610. got even

  1611. secret

  1612. sins,

  1613. like we

  1614. talked

  1615. about

  1616. earlier,

  1617. we have

  1618. all

  1619. sinned.

  1620. confess

  1621. those

  1622. things

  1623. to

  1624. him.

  1625. He

  1626. is

  1627. merciful.

  1628. He

  1629. is

  1630. eager

  1631. to

  1632. forgive.

  1633. The

  1634. day of

  1635. judgment

  1636. is

  1637. coming.

  1638. We

  1639. can't

  1640. get

  1641. away

  1642. with

  1643. faking

  1644. it.

  1645. And

  1646. God

  1647. loves

  1648. us

  1649. dearly.

  1650. So

  1651. why

  1652. shouldn't

  1653. we

  1654. give

  1655. ourselves

  1656. completely

  1657. to

  1658. him?

  1659. Let's

  1660. pray.

  1661. God

  1662. God

  1663. in

  1664. heaven,

  1665. thank

  1666. you

  1667. for

  1668. your

  1669. word.

  1670. I

  1671. pray

  1672. that

  1673. you

  1674. would

  1675. open

  1676. our

  1677. hearts

  1678. wide

  1679. to

  1680. it.

  1681. Stir

  1682. in

  1683. us

  1684. that

  1685. right

  1686. and

  1687. good

  1688. fear

  1689. of

  1690. you.

  1691. Let

  1692. it

  1693. influence

  1694. us.

  1695. May

  1696. our

  1697. lives

  1698. change

  1699. because

  1700. of

  1701. it.

  1702. But

  1703. I

  1704. pray

  1705. also,

  1706. Lord,

  1707. that

  1708. you

  1709. would

  1710. take

  1711. our

  1712. fears

  1713. away.

  1714. As

  1715. we

  1716. remember

  1717. your

  1718. grace

  1719. and

  1720. your

  1721. kindness

  1722. that

  1723. you

  1724. have

  1725. shown

  1726. through

  1727. Jesus

  1728. to

  1729. us.

  1730. Please

  1731. stir

  1732. in us

  1733. a

  1734. right

  1735. response

  1736. to

  1737. your

  1738. words.

  1739. We

  1740. ask

  1741. in

  1742. your

  1743. name

  1744. and

  1745. for

  1746. your

  1747. honor.

  1748. Amen.
