  1. The focus of what we've been talking about in our sermon series through Luke for the past number of weeks.

  2. Of course there are many things we could say to answer that question.

  3. We've heard from Luke that Jesus doesn't want us to live as hypocrites like the Pharisees.

  4. He doesn't want us to live for greed, seeking after the stuff of this earth and how to please ourselves to the max.

  5. We've heard that he doesn't want us to be anxious about what we need.

  6. And these are all the ways that he doesn't want us to live.

  7. But how does Jesus want us to live?

  8. Well we've heard from Luke that he wants us to be honest and sincere.

  9. That we are to fear God and live for his approval instead of the approval of people.

  10. To be rich toward God.

  11. And to trust God to provide for our needs.

  12. And then last Sunday we heard that Jesus wants us to seek God's kingdom.

  13. And to store up treasure in heaven.

  14. Well Jesus continues on with this theme of how we are to live as his followers in Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  15. So we're going to pick up his words in verse 35.

  16. And Jesus gives us three analogies in the passage we're looking at today.

  17. That just sort of are illustrations of how he wants us to live.

  18. Let me start by reading the first one.

  19. Be dressed, ready for service, and keep your lamps burning.

  20. Like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet.

  21. So that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.

  22. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.

  23. Truly I tell you.

  24. He will dress himself to serve.

  25. Will have them recline at the table.

  26. And will come and wait on them.

  27. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready.

  28. Even if he comes in the middle of the night.

  29. Or toward daybreak.

  30. So this first analogy that we get is of a servant that's ready and waiting.

  31. Jesus tells his disciples to be dressed.

  32. Ready for service and keep your lamps burning.

  33. Like servants waiting for their master to return.

  34. From a wedding banquet.

  35. He gives them this illustration.

  36. And probably at first if we're honest this illustration might not feel as illuminating to us.

  37. As maybe it did to them back then.

  38. Because of all the cultural differences.

  39. Back then many households had slaves.

  40. It was embedded in the culture of Jesus' day.

  41. And there was different reasons a person might find themselves in that position.

  42. Some sold themselves into slavery.

  43. To pay off debts.

  44. Others surrendered themselves to it after being conquered during war.

  45. Some were born into it.

  46. And it was even regulated by the governments.

  47. And by the laws of the day.

  48. Many households had slaves.

  49. And of course the obligation of a slave was just to do the work that the master assigned to them.

  50. And a good master would look after them.

  51. And provide for their needs.

  52. And in a sense they'd be considered members of the household.

  53. But basically their role.

  54. Their job was just to serve their master.

  55. Now of course we all know Jesus isn't endorsing slavery here with this teaching.

  56. He's not saying that it's good for society to have it.

  57. But he's using something that everybody in his day would understand as an illustration.

  58. He gives them this scenario.

  59. Think about a slave or a servant who has been given the job of watching and waiting for his master to return.

  60. The master is going out to a wedding banquet.

  61. Which just like today can go well into the evening.

  62. And of course back then they didn't have cars or electricity.

  63. They didn't have street lights or light bulbs.

  64. And so the servant's job in this situation was to keep the lights on at the house.

  65. Until the master returned from the banquet.

  66. Just imagine yourself coming home in the night.

  67. It's late. It's dark.

  68. There's no street lights.

  69. There's no headlights.

  70. There's no flashlights.

  71. And so it's difficult to find your way.

  72. But if the lamps are lit and burning.

  73. You can see them.

  74. And where the house is in the distance.

  75. And you can find your way.

  76. It was also customary back then to bolt and bar the doors.

  77. Of course thieves and thugs came out at night.

  78. And many of us lock our doors at night too.

  79. And so the servant in this story is assigned that job of opening, unlocking the door for the master when he returns.

  80. If the banquet goes late, everybody else in the house may be asleep.

  81. And so there's need of at least one person to wait up, keep the lamps lit, unbar the door when the master returns.

  82. And who knows, maybe when the master returns he wants to wash his hands or feet or something in some hot water before bed.

  83. So the servant's job was also to wait on the master until he went to sleep.

  84. Now this is all analogy.

  85. Jesus tells his disciples,

  86. Be dressed, ready for service,

  87. And keep your lamps burning like servants waiting for their master to return.

  88. He goes on in verse 37.

  89. He says,

  90. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.

  91. Why would it be good?

  92. Because that's what the master asked them to do before he left.

  93. It's not quite the same, but I think of this in context of family life.

  94. Mom or dad sends a child to a room to clean up a mess that they've made.

  95. And maybe ten minutes later we wander by that room to check on the progress.

  96. It will be good for that kid whose parents find that the cleaning is either in progress or done.

  97. It will not be good for that kid if there's even more mess and nothing's been done.

  98. You could also think of this in the context of an employer and employee relationship.

  99. You're paying that employee to do a job for you.

  100. And so it will be good for that employee if when you swing by to check on them,

  101. they've done it or they're at least in the process of doing it.

  102. And of course we can flip that around too.

  103. If you work for someone else, then they're paying you.

  104. And it will be good for you if when they come, they find that you've made progress

  105. since their last time checking in with you.

  106. Whatever the case, whether slave or free, child, parent, adult,

  107. it is commendable to do your work.

  108. It's commendable to look after your responsibilities.

  109. Even in the shows that we watch and in the books that we read,

  110. we think well of that character who is faithful to do the thing that they were assigned to do or given to do.

  111. I haven't watched any kind of Batman show in a long time,

  112. but my favorite character in the show isn't Batman.

  113. It's the butler, Alfred.

  114. Alfred's always thinking ahead to what Bruce Wayne might need.

  115. He keeps the house running like a Swiss timepiece.

  116. He's always ready to stitch Batman up when he comes home bleeding.

  117. He faithfully guards Batman's secret identity.

  118. He's a true hero in the story.

  119. And just think of where Batman would be if it were not for Alfred, his faithful butler.

  120. Whether servant or the head of the household,

  121. it's commendable to do your work and to do it well.

  122. It will be good for that servant whose master finds him watching when he comes.

  123. But then Jesus says something unexpected here.

  124. He says,

  125. Truly, I tell you, the master will dress himself to serve,

  126. will have the servants recline at the table,

  127. and will come and wait on them.

  128. Now I think at this point, all who are listening probably went,

  129. Wait.

  130. What?

  131. Because this is not how things usually go between master and servant.

  132. Between master and slave.

  133. I mean, imagine this.

  134. The master comes home.

  135. He says,

  136. Oh, I've had plenty to eat and drink already.

  137. I just came from a wedding banquet.

  138. But since you guys are such good servants,

  139. always looking after me.

  140. Here, give me that apron.

  141. You go sit down at the table.

  142. I'll get you something to eat and to drink.

  143. I'm sure the people listening were perplexed when Jesus said this.

  144. Because this just never happens.

  145. And so this analogy starts with something really familiar.

  146. But then it ends with this surprise.

  147. And we're going to unpack that surprise and the meaning of the twist in just a minute.

  148. Verse 38.

  149. So back to the servant for a second.

  150. Can you imagine him just sitting at the door, waiting for hours?

  151. It's getting darker.

  152. It's getting later into the night.

  153. In this part of the world, midnight happens about six hours after sunset.

  154. And so if the master returns at midnight,

  155. we're talking six hours of refilling lamps

  156. and just sitting there by the door, waiting and watching.

  157. How easy would it be to just sort of lay down on this couch

  158. and maybe just take this little cushion

  159. and nestle it under my head a little bit

  160. and take a little nap?

  161. But then what if I fall fast asleep

  162. and the lamps go out

  163. and I wake up to the pounding of my master's fist at the door?

  164. Or worse, what if it takes me a few minutes

  165. even just to hear that he's knocking?

  166. Jesus says it will be good for those servants

  167. whose master finds them ready

  168. even if he comes toward daybreak.

  169. Yikes.

  170. What if the master stays out nearly all night

  171. at this banquet?

  172. Does he still expect the servant to have the lights on

  173. and to unbar the door in the wee hours of the morning?

  174. Yeah.

  175. Yeah.

  176. Because that's his job.

  177. And it really doesn't matter when the master comes back,

  178. how long he's out,

  179. what time he arrives.

  180. The point is

  181. that his job,

  182. his assignment as a servant

  183. is to be ready

  184. and watching

  185. for the master's return.

  186. And it's at this moment

  187. Jesus shifts very quickly

  188. to his second analogy.

  189. Verse 39.

  190. He says,

  191. But understand this,

  192. if the owner of the house

  193. had known

  194. at what hour the thief was coming,

  195. he would not have let his house

  196. be broken into.

  197. What's the point?

  198. The point is

  199. that people

  200. usually don't know

  201. when

  202. thieves are going to strike.

  203. If they knew the thief was coming

  204. at 3 a.m.

  205. on Friday night,

  206. they would do whatever was needed

  207. to prevent the robbery.

  208. They would be ready.

  209. But since people

  210. usually don't know

  211. when thieves are going to strike,

  212. they must in a sense

  213. be ready always.

  214. It's why we lock things up

  215. as habit

  216. when leaving valuables unattended

  217. or when going away on vacation.

  218. It's just part of being ready

  219. because we don't know

  220. when the thief will strike.

  221. Maybe it won't be

  222. tonight,

  223. but maybe it will be tonight.

  224. Well, finally,

  225. Jesus gets to the point,

  226. verse 40.

  227. He says,

  228. You also

  229. must be ready

  230. because the Son of Man

  231. will come

  232. at an hour

  233. when you do not expect Him.

  234. This is the statement.

  235. This is the big point

  236. that ties everything together.

  237. It helps us see

  238. what these illustrations

  239. apply to.

  240. Just like the servant

  241. didn't know

  242. when his master

  243. would return

  244. from the wedding banquet,

  245. just like the homeowner

  246. doesn't know

  247. when the thief

  248. is going to come,

  249. there's coming a day,

  250. says Jesus,

  251. when the Son of Man

  252. will return.

  253. He will come

  254. and we,

  255. his followers,

  256. don't know

  257. when

  258. that will be.

  259. Jesus is saying,

  260. I'm going to come

  261. at an hour

  262. when you do not expect me.

  263. And so,

  264. what does Jesus

  265. want his followers

  266. to do?

  267. Be ready.

  268. Be ready.

  269. And,

  270. more specifically,

  271. be ready

  272. always.

  273. at all times.

  274. That theme

  275. of always

  276. runs through

  277. both of these

  278. analogies.

  279. In that first analogy,

  280. the servants

  281. didn't know

  282. when the master

  283. would return

  284. from the wedding banquet.

  285. Would it be in two hours?

  286. Would it be in four?

  287. Would it be at midnight?

  288. Would it be

  289. almost in the morning

  290. towards daybreak?

  291. They didn't know

  292. when,

  293. and so they had

  294. to stay awake.

  295. They had to stay alert.

  296. They had to keep

  297. the lamps burning

  298. at all times

  299. until it happened.

  300. The homeowner

  301. didn't know

  302. what day

  303. or hour

  304. the thief is coming

  305. and so he has

  306. to be prepared

  307. in one way

  308. or another

  309. for that visit

  310. every night.

  311. But what does it

  312. mean to be ready

  313. for Jesus'

  314. return?

  315. he's the son

  316. of man.

  317. How do these

  318. illustrations relate

  319. to that?

  320. Well, one thing

  321. that we can pick

  322. up on here

  323. is that servant

  324. idea.

  325. Jesus uses

  326. the analogy

  327. of a servant

  328. and a master.

  329. And there's

  330. a sort of

  331. relation,

  332. there's a reason

  333. I think it relates

  334. to our relationship

  335. with him.

  336. All of us

  337. who believe

  338. in Jesus

  339. are servants

  340. of Jesus.

  341. He is the Messiah,

  342. he's our king

  343. and so yes,

  344. we are servants.

  345. He is the master

  346. and when Jesus

  347. says,

  348. be dressed

  349. and ready

  350. for service,

  351. he really does

  352. mean that we,

  353. his followers,

  354. should be

  355. ready to serve

  356. him

  357. with our lives,

  358. to do things

  359. for him

  360. because he

  361. is our master.

  362. father.

  363. I think too

  364. that we can

  365. also remember

  366. that that word

  367. as I mentioned

  368. earlier is more

  369. accurately translated

  370. not servant

  371. but slave.

  372. Yes,

  373. the Bible

  374. does describe

  375. our relationship

  376. with God

  377. and Jesus

  378. as that of a

  379. slave.

  380. We're not

  381. merely employed

  382. by God

  383. but we belong

  384. to God.

  385. Now,

  386. we shouldn't

  387. just take

  388. everything bad

  389. that we know

  390. about slavery

  391. from human history

  392. and read it

  393. into this

  394. because remember

  395. the twist

  396. in the analogy

  397. at the end.

  398. What does

  399. the master

  400. do for his

  401. slave

  402. if the slave

  403. is found

  404. watching

  405. when he returns?

  406. Jesus says,

  407. truly I tell you

  408. he will dress

  409. himself,

  410. the master

  411. will dress

  412. himself to serve

  413. will have

  414. them recline

  415. at the table

  416. and will come

  417. and wait

  418. on them.

  419. And so

  420. Jesus is not

  421. like the slave

  422. owners in human

  423. history.

  424. He loves

  425. those who

  426. belong to

  427. him.

  428. Even though

  429. we're lower

  430. than Jesus

  431. in status

  432. and under

  433. his authority

  434. he has promised

  435. to serve

  436. us,

  437. to wait

  438. on us

  439. when he

  440. returns

  441. provided

  442. that we've

  443. kept

  444. watch

  445. as he

  446. asked us

  447. to.

  448. And I'm

  449. going to be

  450. honest

  451. here,

  452. I'm not

  453. even really

  454. sure

  455. what this

  456. part of the

  457. analogy is

  458. pointing to

  459. specifically.

  460. We do see a

  461. little picture of

  462. this later on

  463. in the story

  464. when Jesus

  465. takes up the

  466. servant's towel

  467. and gets down

  468. and washes

  469. the feet of

  470. his disciples

  471. the night

  472. before he

  473. dies.

  474. He really

  475. is a good

  476. master.

  477. The kind

  478. of master

  479. who would

  480. humbly

  481. and lovingly

  482. scrub the

  483. dirt off

  484. our feet.

  485. Not because

  486. we deserve

  487. it,

  488. but just

  489. because that's

  490. the kind

  491. of person

  492. that he

  493. is.

  494. But this

  495. is talking

  496. about the

  497. future when

  498. he returns.

  499. There's coming

  500. a day when

  501. he will come

  502. back to this

  503. earth.

  504. And if we

  505. have been

  506. ready to

  507. serve and

  508. done what

  509. he assigned

  510. to us in

  511. some way,

  512. figuratively

  513. speaking,

  514. he will

  515. seat us

  516. around his

  517. own table

  518. and do

  519. for us

  520. what we

  521. have done

  522. for him.

  523. He will

  524. serve us.

  525. What a

  526. thought.

  527. And it

  528. won't mean

  529. that he's

  530. any less

  531. the king

  532. or that

  533. we're any

  534. more than

  535. subjects.

  536. not

  537. but he

  538. has promised

  539. to serve

  540. his

  541. servants

  542. as a

  543. reward for

  544. their

  545. faithfulness

  546. to him.

  547. This is a

  548. promise that

  549. we can

  550. cling to,

  551. especially

  552. when life

  553. is hard

  554. or when

  555. we're

  556. tempted to

  557. sort of

  558. take it

  559. easy

  560. in how

  561. we serve

  562. the Lord.

  563. We can

  564. remember

  565. he is

  566. coming back

  567. and he

  568. will reward

  569. us specially

  570. for being

  571. vigilant

  572. and faithful.

  573. Let's move

  574. on now to

  575. the third

  576. and final

  577. illustration.

  578. This one's a

  579. little bit

  580. longer and

  581. has a little

  582. more detail

  583. in it.

  584. And then

  585. we'll talk

  586. more about

  587. what it

  588. really means

  589. to be

  590. ready for

  591. Jesus'

  592. return.

  593. verse 41.

  594. Peter asked,

  595. Lord,

  596. are you

  597. telling this

  598. parable to

  599. us or

  600. to everyone?

  601. The Lord

  602. answered,

  603. Who then

  604. is the

  605. faithful and

  606. wise manager

  607. whom the

  608. master puts

  609. in charge

  610. of his

  611. servants

  612. to give

  613. them their

  614. food allowance

  615. at the

  616. proper time?

  617. It will

  618. be good

  619. for that

  620. servant

  621. whom the

  622. master

  623. finds doing

  624. so when

  625. he returns?

  626. Truly,

  627. I tell

  628. you,

  629. he will

  630. put him

  631. in charge

  632. of all

  633. his

  634. possessions.

  635. But

  636. suppose the

  637. servant says

  638. to himself,

  639. my master

  640. is taking a

  641. long time

  642. in coming.

  643. And he

  644. then begins

  645. to beat

  646. the other

  647. servants,

  648. both men

  649. and women,

  650. and to

  651. eat and

  652. drink and

  653. get drunk.

  654. the

  655. master of

  656. that

  657. servant

  658. will

  659. come on

  660. a day

  661. when he

  662. does not

  663. expect

  664. him,

  665. and at

  666. an hour

  667. he is

  668. not

  669. aware

  670. of,

  671. he will

  672. cut him

  673. to pieces

  674. and assign

  675. him a

  676. place

  677. with the

  678. unbelievers.

  679. So this

  680. third

  681. illustration

  682. is similar

  683. to the

  684. first.

  685. We got a

  686. master and

  687. a slave

  688. again,

  689. but instead

  690. of being

  691. tasked with

  692. keeping watch

  693. for the

  694. master to

  695. return and

  696. opening the

  697. door,

  698. we have a

  699. different

  700. situation

  701. here.

  702. In this

  703. one,

  704. the master

  705. will be

  706. gone for

  707. a while.

  708. And while

  709. he's gone,

  710. he's put

  711. one of his

  712. servants,

  713. again literally

  714. slaves,

  715. in charge

  716. of the

  717. household.

  718. And this

  719. one slave's

  720. job is to

  721. be the

  722. steward or

  723. manager of

  724. the household

  725. while the

  726. master is

  727. gone.

  728. To ensure

  729. that the

  730. other slaves

  731. receive their

  732. food at the

  733. proper time.

  734. And so we

  735. might envision

  736. it as he

  737. gets the

  738. key to

  739. the storeroom

  740. of the

  741. house where

  742. all the

  743. food and

  744. all the

  745. wine and

  746. perhaps even

  747. the money

  748. probably are

  749. kept.

  750. And Jesus

  751. frames this

  752. in the

  753. form of a

  754. question.

  755. Who then

  756. is the

  757. faithful and

  758. wise manager

  759. manager in

  760. a situation

  761. such as

  762. this?

  763. And the

  764. answer is

  765. the faithful

  766. and wise

  767. manager is

  768. the servant

  769. who does

  770. what his

  771. master asked

  772. him to do

  773. while the

  774. master is

  775. gone.

  776. And Jesus

  777. again uses

  778. that same

  779. language we

  780. heard before

  781. in verse

  782. 43.

  783. It will

  784. be good

  785. for that

  786. servant

  787. whom the

  788. master finds

  789. doing so

  790. when he

  791. returns.

  792. And then

  793. listen to the

  794. outcome for

  795. this guy if

  796. he's faithful

  797. and does it.

  798. Truly I

  799. tell you

  800. says Jesus

  801. the master

  802. will put him

  803. in charge of

  804. all his

  805. possessions.

  806. So he's

  807. proved himself

  808. trustworthy

  809. wise

  810. faithful

  811. and he

  812. gets entrusted

  813. with more.

  814. I'll never

  815. forget what

  816. it said on

  817. the back of

  818. my old

  819. boss's

  820. business cards.

  821. He had a

  822. quote there

  823. and it

  824. was the

  825. reward for

  826. work well

  827. done is

  828. the opportunity

  829. to do

  830. more.

  831. And it

  832. took me a

  833. while to

  834. understand that

  835. because of

  836. course in my

  837. late teenage

  838. years I

  839. couldn't figure

  840. out how the

  841. opportunity to

  842. do more

  843. work could

  844. be a

  845. reward.

  846. Like who

  847. wants to

  848. do more

  849. work?

  850. That's like a

  851. punishment isn't

  852. it?

  853. But of

  854. course there's

  855. some truth to

  856. it.

  857. Those who

  858. can be trusted

  859. to do the

  860. job well

  861. are often

  862. sought after

  863. by others.

  864. People are

  865. even willing to

  866. pay a little

  867. more for their

  868. services.

  869. And then

  870. with that

  871. comes more

  872. freedom,

  873. more profit,

  874. more privilege,

  875. more honor.

  876. Think of

  877. the slave

  878. for a moment

  879. in this

  880. situation

  881. who's been

  882. manager.

  883. His master

  884. comes back,

  885. he's done a

  886. good job of

  887. everything,

  888. no longer is

  889. this guy

  890. just carrying

  891. water and

  892. cleaning the

  893. chamber pots

  894. for the

  895. master.

  896. He's now

  897. second in

  898. command over

  899. the whole

  900. house.

  901. Truly I

  902. tell you,

  903. he will put

  904. him in

  905. charge of

  906. all his

  907. possessions.

  908. And so

  909. Jesus wants

  910. his followers,

  911. he wants us

  912. to know

  913. that he

  914. will reward

  915. us for

  916. our faithful

  917. service of

  918. him.

  919. All we

  920. do for

  921. Jesus in

  922. this life

  923. will not

  924. go unrecognized

  925. or unnoticed.

  926. It will be

  927. rewarded.

  928. The things

  929. that we do

  930. here and now

  931. will matter

  932. big time

  933. on the day

  934. that Jesus

  935. returns.

  936. if we

  937. have proven

  938. faithful and

  939. wise with

  940. the life

  941. that he's

  942. given us,

  943. he will

  944. give us

  945. even greater

  946. things to

  947. do for

  948. him in

  949. his kingdom

  950. when he

  951. comes back.

  952. Now,

  953. down here

  954. on earth,

  955. the way

  956. things are,

  957. that may

  958. not always

  959. sound like

  960. a blessing

  961. to be

  962. responsible

  963. for more.

  964. but when

  965. Christ comes

  966. back,

  967. that's not

  968. going to

  969. be the

  970. case.

  971. Everything's

  972. going to

  973. be made

  974. new.

  975. There'll

  976. be no

  977. more sin.

  978. There'll

  979. be no

  980. more

  981. frustration.

  982. Serving

  983. the Lord

  984. with greater

  985. responsibilities

  986. will be

  987. glorious

  988. and deeply

  989. satisfying.

  990. let's

  991. come back

  992. to that

  993. question

  994. of what

  995. it means

  996. to be

  997. ready

  998. for

  999. Jesus'

  1000. return.

  1001. What it

  1002. means to

  1003. keep the

  1004. lamps

  1005. burning

  1006. for his

  1007. arrival.

  1008. I think

  1009. as Christians

  1010. sometimes

  1011. we get

  1012. some wrong

  1013. ideas about

  1014. this.

  1015. Maybe we

  1016. think that

  1017. being ready

  1018. simply means

  1019. feeling ready

  1020. for Jesus

  1021. to return.

  1022. having a

  1023. peace in

  1024. our hearts

  1025. about it.

  1026. But I

  1027. don't think

  1028. that's what

  1029. Jesus means

  1030. here.

  1031. I don't

  1032. think he

  1033. wants us

  1034. just to be

  1035. cheerful and

  1036. accepting of

  1037. that truth

  1038. that he's

  1039. coming back.

  1040. We should

  1041. be,

  1042. but there's

  1043. more to

  1044. being ready

  1045. than just

  1046. feelings about

  1047. it.

  1048. Another way

  1049. we sometimes

  1050. get this

  1051. wrong is

  1052. that we

  1053. think being

  1054. ready for

  1055. Jesus and

  1056. keeping

  1057. watch for

  1058. him means

  1059. staying on

  1060. top of

  1061. the news

  1062. and watching

  1063. for signs

  1064. of the

  1065. end.

  1066. And Jesus

  1067. did tell us

  1068. that there

  1069. will be

  1070. signs and

  1071. that if we're

  1072. wise we will

  1073. discern the

  1074. nearness of

  1075. his coming

  1076. by them.

  1077. But knowing

  1078. that his

  1079. coming is

  1080. near is

  1081. not the

  1082. same thing

  1083. as being

  1084. ready for

  1085. it.

  1086. look at

  1087. the first

  1088. analogy

  1089. again of

  1090. the master

  1091. who went

  1092. to the

  1093. wedding.

  1094. The point

  1095. is not

  1096. that we

  1097. should be

  1098. literally

  1099. dressed all

  1100. the time,

  1101. have the

  1102. lights on

  1103. always,

  1104. and be

  1105. watching out

  1106. our window

  1107. always as

  1108. followers of

  1109. Jesus.

  1110. Being ready

  1111. is related

  1112. to what was

  1113. asked of

  1114. the servant.

  1115. all the

  1116. master was

  1117. away.

  1118. Did the

  1119. master find

  1120. the servant

  1121. doing what

  1122. was asked

  1123. of him

  1124. when he

  1125. returned?

  1126. That's what

  1127. it means to

  1128. be ready.

  1129. To be

  1130. found doing,

  1131. to be doing

  1132. what was

  1133. asked when

  1134. he returns.

  1135. We see it

  1136. again in the

  1137. third example.

  1138. The master

  1139. who left

  1140. the servant

  1141. in charge

  1142. of the

  1143. household,

  1144. they gave

  1145. him those

  1146. specific

  1147. duties to

  1148. ensure the

  1149. other servants

  1150. in the

  1151. house got

  1152. their portions

  1153. of food

  1154. from the

  1155. storeroom

  1156. at the

  1157. proper times.

  1158. And we

  1159. hear that

  1160. same thing

  1161. again.

  1162. It will be

  1163. good for

  1164. that servant

  1165. whom the

  1166. master finds

  1167. doing so

  1168. when he

  1169. returns.

  1170. And so

  1171. this is what

  1172. it means to

  1173. be ready.

  1174. This is what

  1175. it means to

  1176. be faithful

  1177. and wise.

  1178. it means

  1179. that while

  1180. Jesus,

  1181. the Son of

  1182. Man,

  1183. is away,

  1184. we are

  1185. busy doing

  1186. what he

  1187. has asked

  1188. of us.

  1189. And since

  1190. like the

  1191. thief,

  1192. we don't

  1193. know when

  1194. he's coming

  1195. back,

  1196. we are

  1197. to always

  1198. be ready.

  1199. We're to

  1200. always be

  1201. busy doing

  1202. what he

  1203. has asked

  1204. of us

  1205. at all

  1206. times.

  1207. because

  1208. Jesus

  1209. really

  1210. will

  1211. return.

  1212. And when

  1213. he does,

  1214. it will

  1215. be obvious

  1216. what we

  1217. have done

  1218. or what

  1219. we have

  1220. failed to

  1221. do.

  1222. This is

  1223. where even

  1224. Jesus'

  1225. illustration

  1226. has a

  1227. limitation.

  1228. It's not

  1229. as though

  1230. he doesn't

  1231. know what

  1232. we're up

  1233. to right

  1234. now and

  1235. he'll see

  1236. it when

  1237. he comes

  1238. back,

  1239. like in

  1240. the examples

  1241. here.

  1242. He sees

  1243. everything that

  1244. we do

  1245. constantly

  1246. right now

  1247. from his

  1248. throne in

  1249. heaven.

  1250. But he

  1251. will come

  1252. back and

  1253. we will

  1254. give an

  1255. account face

  1256. to face

  1257. for what

  1258. we have

  1259. done,

  1260. for whether

  1261. we have

  1262. done what

  1263. he has

  1264. asked us

  1265. to do.

  1266. Unless,

  1267. of course,

  1268. we die

  1269. before he

  1270. returns,

  1271. in which

  1272. case we'll

  1273. have to

  1274. give that

  1275. account even

  1276. sooner.

  1277. are you

  1278. ready for

  1279. Jesus'

  1280. return?

  1281. For that

  1282. face-to-face

  1283. meeting?

  1284. Are you

  1285. right now

  1286. every day

  1287. busying

  1288. yourself

  1289. with doing

  1290. what Jesus

  1291. has asked

  1292. you to

  1293. do?

  1294. Are you

  1295. pouring your

  1296. effort and

  1297. your time

  1298. and your

  1299. attention

  1300. into

  1301. obeying

  1302. the

  1303. commands

  1304. that

  1305. Jesus

  1306. has

  1307. given?

  1308. Into

  1309. obeying

  1310. the

  1311. master's

  1312. instructions?

  1313. Now,

  1314. that's kind

  1315. of general.

  1316. That's not

  1317. very specific.

  1318. You might

  1319. wonder,

  1320. well,

  1321. what is it

  1322. that Jesus

  1323. wants me

  1324. to do?

  1325. What are

  1326. we talking

  1327. about here?

  1328. And I'm

  1329. not going

  1330. to spend

  1331. too much

  1332. time on

  1333. this,

  1334. but the

  1335. short answer

  1336. is that

  1337. this book

  1338. contains

  1339. it all.

  1340. It explains

  1341. the

  1342. master's

  1343. will.

  1344. It has

  1345. his

  1346. instructions

  1347. for us.

  1348. It tells

  1349. us what

  1350. our

  1351. priorities

  1352. should be

  1353. in life.

  1354. And just

  1355. as a quick

  1356. summary,

  1357. our lives

  1358. are to be

  1359. spent for

  1360. God's

  1361. glory,

  1362. worshiping

  1363. him,

  1364. praying to

  1365. him,

  1366. gathering

  1367. together

  1368. regularly,

  1369. loving

  1370. each

  1371. other,

  1372. spreading

  1373. his

  1374. good

  1375. news,

  1376. making

  1377. disciples

  1378. for

  1379. Jesus,

  1380. doing

  1381. our

  1382. work,

  1383. whatever

  1384. it is,

  1385. with all

  1386. our

  1387. heart,

  1388. is working

  1389. for the

  1390. Lord,

  1391. showing

  1392. hospitality

  1393. to others,

  1394. living

  1395. holy,

  1396. pure,

  1397. and righteous

  1398. lives,

  1399. raising our

  1400. children in

  1401. the fear

  1402. and instruction

  1403. of the

  1404. Lord,

  1405. being good

  1406. husbands and

  1407. wives,

  1408. as Christ

  1409. has commanded

  1410. us.

  1411. And the

  1412. list goes

  1413. on.

  1414. It covers

  1415. every aspect

  1416. of our

  1417. lives.

  1418. We learn

  1419. all of

  1420. this in

  1421. the Bible.

  1422. God has

  1423. made his

  1424. will clear

  1425. and he

  1426. shows us

  1427. plainly what

  1428. he's commanded

  1429. us to do.

  1430. Well,

  1431. what happens

  1432. if we

  1433. ignore all

  1434. this?

  1435. And just

  1436. sort of do

  1437. whatever we

  1438. feel like

  1439. doing?

  1440. Jesus

  1441. tells us

  1442. what the

  1443. outcome will

  1444. be for

  1445. us.

  1446. But suppose

  1447. the servant

  1448. says to

  1449. himself,

  1450. my

  1451. master's

  1452. taking

  1453. a long

  1454. time in

  1455. coming.

  1456. And he

  1457. then begins

  1458. to beat

  1459. the other

  1460. servants,

  1461. both men

  1462. and women,

  1463. and to

  1464. eat and

  1465. drink and

  1466. get drunk.

  1467. So the

  1468. picture here

  1469. is of this

  1470. wicked,

  1471. selfish,

  1472. indulgent

  1473. man who

  1474. just kind

  1475. of takes

  1476. over as

  1477. the new

  1478. master of

  1479. the house.

  1480. After all,

  1481. he's got the

  1482. key to the

  1483. storeroom,

  1484. right?

  1485. So he

  1486. decides to

  1487. have a little

  1488. fun with

  1489. it and to

  1490. enjoy his

  1491. authority and

  1492. his position

  1493. and to

  1494. lord it

  1495. over the

  1496. fellow

  1497. slaves.

  1498. He decides

  1499. to indulge

  1500. himself with

  1501. the master's

  1502. food and

  1503. drink and

  1504. acts as a

  1505. glutton and

  1506. a drunkard.

  1507. And Jesus

  1508. says,

  1509. the master of

  1510. that servant

  1511. will come on

  1512. a day when

  1513. he does not

  1514. expect him

  1515. and at an

  1516. hour he is

  1517. not aware

  1518. of, he

  1519. will cut

  1520. him to

  1521. pieces and

  1522. assign him a

  1523. place with

  1524. the

  1525. unbelievers.

  1526. That word

  1527. unbelievers can

  1528. also be

  1529. translated as

  1530. the unfaithful.

  1531. Faithful

  1532. manager,

  1533. unfaithful,

  1534. same word

  1535. just negated

  1536. in this

  1537. part.

  1538. Cut him

  1539. to pieces

  1540. is probably

  1541. a figure of

  1542. speech.

  1543. If it's

  1544. literal, it's

  1545. kind of an

  1546. interesting

  1547. sequence.

  1548. First you

  1549. get cut to

  1550. pieces,

  1551. then you

  1552. get assigned

  1553. a place with

  1554. the unfaithful,

  1555. and then you

  1556. get beaten

  1557. with many

  1558. blows.

  1559. So I'm

  1560. not sure

  1561. how that

  1562. works, but

  1563. we do this

  1564. all the time.

  1565. You know,

  1566. when Bob

  1567. backed into

  1568. Steve's car,

  1569. Steve came

  1570. out and

  1571. ripped him

  1572. to shreds,

  1573. we'll say.

  1574. Well, of

  1575. course it's

  1576. not literal,

  1577. but it

  1578. means he

  1579. was furious

  1580. and he

  1581. gave him

  1582. a severe

  1583. tongue

  1584. lashing.

  1585. Jesus will

  1586. not be

  1587. happy.

  1588. In fact,

  1589. Jesus goes

  1590. on to

  1591. describe

  1592. what would

  1593. normally be

  1594. done to

  1595. slaves who

  1596. did such

  1597. things as

  1598. this back

  1599. in those

  1600. days in

  1601. verse 47

  1602. and 48.

  1603. The servant

  1604. who knows

  1605. the master's

  1606. will and

  1607. does not

  1608. get ready

  1609. or does

  1610. not do

  1611. what the

  1612. master wants

  1613. will be

  1614. beaten with

  1615. many blows.

  1616. But the

  1617. one who does

  1618. not know

  1619. and does

  1620. things deserving

  1621. punishment

  1622. will be

  1623. beaten with

  1624. few blows.

  1625. From

  1626. everyone who

  1627. has been

  1628. given much,

  1629. much will

  1630. be demanded.

  1631. And from

  1632. the one who

  1633. has been

  1634. entrusted

  1635. with much,

  1636. much more

  1637. will be

  1638. asked.

  1639. So the

  1640. master would

  1641. see to it

  1642. that the

  1643. punishment

  1644. fit the

  1645. offense.

  1646. And of

  1647. course he

  1648. would take

  1649. into

  1650. consideration

  1651. whether the

  1652. offense was

  1653. deliberate and

  1654. defiant or

  1655. whether it

  1656. was due to

  1657. ignorance.

  1658. In the same

  1659. way Jesus

  1660. will judge

  1661. our actions

  1662. when he

  1663. returns.

  1664. sins.

  1665. But if we

  1666. have been

  1667. faithful,

  1668. then we

  1669. have nothing

  1670. to worry

  1671. about.

  1672. We'll be

  1673. rewarded by

  1674. him.

  1675. But if we've

  1676. been unfaithful

  1677. and if we

  1678. have persistently

  1679. acted

  1680. selfishly,

  1681. sinfully,

  1682. wickedly,

  1683. then Jesus

  1684. will give us

  1685. what we

  1686. deserve.

  1687. He will

  1688. pour out on

  1689. us the

  1690. punishment that

  1691. fits and

  1692. will assign

  1693. us a place

  1694. with the

  1695. unfaithful.

  1696. And I

  1697. think yes,

  1698. Jesus is

  1699. talking here

  1700. about heaven

  1701. and hell.

  1702. The mark

  1703. of every

  1704. true believer

  1705. in Jesus,

  1706. every genuine

  1707. follower of

  1708. Jesus is

  1709. persistent

  1710. faithfulness.

  1711. Not that we

  1712. live perfectly,

  1713. it's not

  1714. perfect faithfulness

  1715. of course,

  1716. but that we

  1717. press on

  1718. continually in

  1719. obedience to

  1720. Jesus,

  1721. doing what

  1722. our master

  1723. has asked of

  1724. us.

  1725. We

  1726. regularly

  1727. confess and

  1728. repent of

  1729. our failings

  1730. and we

  1731. strive to

  1732. obey Jesus

  1733. as much as

  1734. possible in

  1735. every area of

  1736. our lives,

  1737. to do our

  1738. master's will.

  1739. That's what

  1740. true faith in

  1741. Jesus leads us

  1742. to do.

  1743. Because at the

  1744. end of this

  1745. world story,

  1746. Jesus really

  1747. is coming

  1748. back.

  1749. And there

  1750. are only two

  1751. outcomes here.

  1752. The outcome

  1753. of the faithful

  1754. and the wise,

  1755. being entrusted

  1756. with all his

  1757. possessions,

  1758. or the outcome

  1759. of the unfaithful

  1760. and the foolish.

  1761. Are you ready

  1762. for Jesus'

  1763. return?

  1764. Are you busy

  1765. doing what he

  1766. has asked?

  1767. let's pray.

  1768. Let's pray.

  1769. Father in heaven,

  1770. thank you for

  1771. these words,

  1772. and I pray that

  1773. our hearts would be

  1774. open and receptive

  1775. to them.

  1776. Convict us of the

  1777. sins that we have

  1778. committed recently

  1779. in our lives,

  1780. where we have

  1781. been like that

  1782. wicked,

  1783. unfaithful servant,

  1784. and bring us

  1785. back to walking

  1786. in the light

  1787. with you.

  1788. Even the things

  1789. we've done right,

  1790. Lord, we give you

  1791. the credit and the

  1792. glory for that.

  1793. It's your spirit

  1794. in us.

  1795. And we thank you

  1796. that there is

  1797. coming that day

  1798. when you return

  1799. and when you

  1800. reward us

  1801. for everything

  1802. that we have

  1803. done,

  1804. even though we

  1805. don't deserve

  1806. it.

  1807. We long for

  1808. that day,

  1809. Lord.

  1810. Come quickly.

  1811. In Jesus' name,

  1812. Amen.
