  1. Sunday we heard Jesus say some of his most unpopular words to a crowd of many thousands in Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. So as Jesus speaks to the crowd of many thousands, there were some people there.

  4. And these people bring up in the conversation something that had happened.

  5. There were some men from Galilee and Pilate, the Roman governor in Judea, had mixed the blood of these Galileans with the sacrifices that they were offering.

  6. And ever since Luke recorded this, many have wondered about this incident.

  7. We want to know the details.

  8. What did these Galileans do that Pilate decided to kill them?

  9. And many have proposed and suggested all sorts of different scenarios.

  10. Even Josephus, the famous Jewish historian who lived in the late first century, proposed five different events which these people might have been referring to in the crowd.

  11. And truth be told, we don't know just what happened between Pilate and these Galileans.

  12. But one thing that digging around in the history books does reveal is that there was no shortage of violence between the Roman government and the Jewish people living in that region.

  13. The tensions were very high and many Jews lost their lives to the Romans.

  14. So all we have for certain is what we read here in Luke.

  15. It would seem that some men from Galilee were offering sacrifices or about to offer sacrifices.

  16. And most likely this would have been at the temple or on the way to the temple in Jerusalem.

  17. And Pilate mixed their blood with the blood of the animals that they were offering.

  18. At the very least, this obviously means that Pilate killed them.

  19. We don't know if they were executed in the usual way by crucifixion.

  20. Or whether they were just sort of cut down by soldiers where they were.

  21. The part that really stands out is that their own blood was added to the blood of the sacrifices.

  22. On a spiritual and religious level, this is shocking.

  23. It seems to be an especially heinous act, profaning and desecrating the temple sacrifices.

  24. And so Jesus responds to these guys telling about this in the crowd.

  25. Jesus answered,

  26. Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans?

  27. Because they suffered this way.

  28. So Jesus' response here is kind of telling.

  29. You know, after hearing about the shocking death of these Galileans,

  30. many people didn't know what to think.

  31. Some came to the conclusion that these Galileans must have been especially wicked

  32. that God brought this judgment on them.

  33. Maybe they thought God used Pilate to kill them

  34. because of how bad of sinners they were.

  35. Perhaps they had done something especially evil,

  36. and that's why God brought about this especially dishonorable death for them.

  37. Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans

  38. because they suffered this way?

  39. Says Jesus.

  40. I tell you, no.

  41. But unless you repent,

  42. you too will all perish.

  43. So Jesus basically says that the death of these Galileans in this shocking way

  44. was not because they were worse sinners than the average person.

  45. And he turns it right back to the people in the crowd.

  46. He says,

  47. All of you will also perish

  48. unless you repent.

  49. Sometimes we look at tragic things that happen in the news,

  50. and we're quick to assume that God is bringing judgment

  51. on the people of that place

  52. because they are especially sinful.

  53. When we read the news articles,

  54. maybe we're even looking for some glaring sin

  55. that those people committed.

  56. Were they known for being sexually immoral?

  57. Or for their hypocrisy?

  58. Or were they known in that place for persecuting Christians?

  59. And the assumption we sometimes carry when we do this

  60. is that God usually only brings disaster

  61. on people because of their sins.

  62. But Jesus says,

  63. No.

  64. No.

  65. No.

  66. All of you.

  67. And remember,

  68. He's speaking to a crowd of many thousands.

  69. All of you are guilty enough to deserve

  70. what happened to them.

  71. And if you do not repent of your sins,

  72. what happened to them will happen to you.

  73. You too will perish.

  74. Let this be a warning to us

  75. not to assume

  76. we are better or more righteous

  77. than others

  78. who are struck with disaster.

  79. We are not.

  80. Well, Jesus reinforces this

  81. with another example,

  82. a second example in the next couple verses.

  83. Verse 4.

  84. He says,

  85. Or those 18 who died

  86. when the tower in Siloam fell on them?

  87. Do you think they were more guilty

  88. than all the others living in Jerusalem?

  89. I tell you,

  90. no.

  91. But unless you repent,

  92. you too will all perish.

  93. So this was another tragedy of the times.

  94. 18 people were killed in this accident

  95. when the tower of Siloam fell on them.

  96. And just like with the first example,

  97. historians haven't found any additional info

  98. by digging into things

  99. about this incident.

  100. Perhaps one of the reasons is

  101. work-related accidents happen all the time.

  102. Even more so in the ancient world

  103. where safety was often a secondary concern.

  104. But people sort of came to the same conclusion,

  105. some of them anyway,

  106. when this accident happened.

  107. Oh, those guys who were killed in this tragedy,

  108. they must have been especially guilty of some sin.

  109. God was punishing them

  110. since they died in this very tragic and public way.

  111. And Jesus again says,

  112. No.

  113. Those guys weren't any more guilty of sin

  114. than the rest of the people living in Jerusalem.

  115. They weren't any more guilty of sin

  116. than all of you are.

  117. Unless you repent,

  118. you too will perish.

  119. So Jesus confronts the crowd and us

  120. with this uncomfortable truth

  121. that we are all,

  122. every one of us,

  123. sinners,

  124. deserving of death.

  125. Other places in the Bible

  126. state it really clearly.

  127. One that we're very familiar with,

  128. Romans 3.23,

  129. For all have sinned

  130. and fall short of the glory of God.

  131. And then there's Romans 6.23,

  132. which is often quoted with it.

  133. And it states clearly,

  134. just as Jesus did,

  135. that what we deserve for being sinners

  136. is to perish.

  137. For the wages of sin

  138. is death.

  139. That's what we all deserve.

  140. That's what we all will get,

  141. says Jesus,

  142. unless

  143. you repent.

  144. repent.

  145. Well,

  146. what does it mean

  147. to repent?

  148. If you've been a Christian

  149. a long time,

  150. which I know

  151. there are definitely

  152. some in this room

  153. who have,

  154. you're super familiar with this.

  155. You know what this means.

  156. But if you're just

  157. exploring Christianity

  158. or you're younger,

  159. maybe you're not as familiar

  160. with this.

  161. The word repent

  162. means to turn.

  163. And the way it's used

  164. in the Bible

  165. includes two elements.

  166. We are called

  167. by God

  168. to turn

  169. from

  170. and we are called

  171. to turn

  172. to.

  173. Let's just see this,

  174. a couple examples of this

  175. for ourselves.

  176. Let's look at a few passages

  177. from the prophet Ezekiel.

  178. Ezekiel 14.6.

  179. God is speaking

  180. through Ezekiel.

  181. He says,

  182. Therefore say to the people

  183. of Israel,

  184. this is what the

  185. sovereign Lord says,

  186. repent.

  187. Turn from

  188. your idols

  189. and renounce

  190. all your detestable

  191. practices.

  192. As God calls them

  193. to repent,

  194. He calls them

  195. to turn

  196. from

  197. the sinful things

  198. they have been doing.

  199. The worshipping

  200. of the idols.

  201. Stop worshipping

  202. the idols.

  203. And we see

  204. in this passage

  205. along with that

  206. part of repentance

  207. is

  208. renouncing

  209. the detestable

  210. practices.

  211. So repentance

  212. includes

  213. giving up

  214. our sinful ways.

  215. It includes

  216. confessing

  217. or declaring

  218. with our mouths

  219. that those ways

  220. are wrong

  221. and rejecting them.

  222. another passage

  223. just a few

  224. chapters later

  225. in Ezekiel.

  226. Ezekiel 18

    Ezekiel 18:30

  227. verse 30.

  228. This is God

  229. speaking through

  230. Ezekiel again.

  231. Therefore,

  232. you Israelites,

  233. I will judge

  234. each of you

  235. according to

  236. your own ways,

  237. declares

  238. the sovereign

  239. Lord.

  240. Repent.

  241. Turn away

  242. from all

  243. your offenses.

  244. Then sin

  245. will not be

  246. your downfall.

  247. Here we see

  248. it again.

  249. Repentance is a

  250. turning from,

  251. turn from

  252. all your

  253. offenses,

  254. all your

  255. sins.

  256. And one more

  257. in Ezekiel as

  258. well,

  259. 33 verse 10.

  260. We saw this

  261. passage last

  262. Sunday.

  263. Son of man,

  264. say to the

  265. Israelites,

  266. this is what

  267. you are saying.

  268. Our offenses

  269. and sin

  270. weigh us down

  271. and we are

  272. wasting away

  273. because of them.

  274. How then

  275. can we live?

  276. Say to them,

  277. as surely as

  278. I live,

  279. declares the

  280. sovereign Lord,

  281. I take no

  282. pleasure in the

  283. death of the

  284. wicked,

  285. but rather

  286. that they

  287. turn from

  288. their ways

  289. and live.

  290. Turn.

  291. Turn from

  292. your evil

  293. ways.

  294. Why will

  295. you die,

  296. people of

  297. Israel?

  298. There it is

  299. again.

  300. Turn from

  301. your evil

  302. ways.

  303. So that's

  304. the first

  305. element of

  306. repentance.

  307. When Jesus

  308. says,

  309. unless you

  310. too repent,

  311. or unless

  312. you repent,

  313. you too

  314. will all

  315. perish.

  316. He means

  317. unless you

  318. turn from

  319. your sins,

  320. from your

  321. wicked ways,

  322. renouncing

  323. them,

  324. you will

  325. perish.

  326. but we

  327. also see

  328. in the

  329. Bible

  330. another

  331. element

  332. of

  333. repentance,

  334. that it

  335. doesn't

  336. just mean

  337. turning away

  338. from,

  339. it also

  340. includes

  341. turning to.

  342. Look at

  343. what the

  344. apostle Peter

  345. said to his

  346. fellow Israelites

  347. in Jerusalem

  348. in Acts

    Acts 3:19

  349. chapter 3

  350. verse 19.

  351. He said,

  352. repent then

  353. and turn

  354. to God

  355. so that

  356. your sins

  357. may be

  358. wiped out,

  359. that times

  360. of refreshing

  361. may come

  362. from the

  363. Lord.

  364. Actually,

  365. the word

  366. used here,

  367. turn to

  368. God,

  369. not just

  370. implies

  371. turning to,

  372. but turning

  373. back to

  374. God,

  375. or returning

  376. to God.

  377. Here we

  378. see that

  379. repentance is

  380. not just

  381. about us

  382. stopping

  383. the bad

  384. things that

  385. we've been

  386. doing,

  387. and renouncing

  388. them.

  389. It is that,

  390. but it's

  391. also a

  392. relational

  393. thing,

  394. where we

  395. come back

  396. to relationship

  397. with God,

  398. and we

  399. seek to be

  400. reconciled

  401. to Him.

  402. Another

  403. example of

  404. this element

  405. of turning

  406. to is

  407. Acts 26

    Acts 26:20

  408. verse 20.

  409. This is

  410. the Apostle

  411. Paul,

  412. explaining in

  413. court what

  414. he has been

  415. up to.

  416. He says,

  417. first to

  418. those in

  419. Damascus,

  420. then to

  421. those in

  422. Jerusalem,

  423. and in

  424. all Judea,

  425. and then to

  426. the Gentiles,

  427. I preached

  428. that they

  429. should repent

  430. and turn

  431. to God,

  432. and demonstrate

  433. their repentance

  434. by their deeds.

  435. here we

  436. kind of see

  437. both elements

  438. of repentance

  439. in one

  440. verse.

  441. Paul says

  442. they should

  443. repent,

  444. meaning turn

  445. to God.

  446. That's the

  447. relational part.

  448. And he

  449. says they

  450. should demonstrate

  451. the genuineness

  452. of that,

  453. that change

  454. of heart

  455. by their

  456. deeds,

  457. by turning

  458. away from

  459. their sinful

  460. actions,

  461. and replacing

  462. them with

  463. the right

  464. actions,

  465. the things

  466. God has

  467. commanded.

  468. And so

  469. all of this

  470. is what is

  471. meant by

  472. Jesus when

  473. he says,

  474. unless you

  475. repent,

  476. you too

  477. will all

  478. perish.

  479. Unless you

  480. turn from

  481. your sinful

  482. ways,

  483. renouncing

  484. them,

  485. and turn

  486. back to

  487. God,

  488. you will

  489. perish.

  490. And I

  491. emphasize both

  492. of these

  493. elements of

  494. repentance

  495. because so

  496. often we

  497. just think of

  498. repentance as

  499. being about

  500. turning away

  501. from sins.

  502. And it

  503. is that.

  504. But God

  505. calls us to

  506. repent not

  507. just because he

  508. wants us to

  509. stop sinning.

  510. That's not

  511. the main or

  512. the only goal.

  513. He calls us to

  514. repent because he

  515. wants a restored

  516. relationship with

  517. us.

  518. us.

  519. He wants to

  520. fix that

  521. broken

  522. relationship

  523. between him

  524. and us.

  525. We talk

  526. often about how

  527. God is eager

  528. to forgive us

  529. of our sins.

  530. Well, it's not

  531. just because he

  532. has to or

  533. because he's

  534. merciful, but

  535. he actually

  536. desires a

  537. restored

  538. relationship

  539. with us.

  540. And just

  541. like with

  542. human

  543. relationships,

  544. a relationship

  545. that is

  546. broken cannot

  547. be restored

  548. just by

  549. changing the

  550. behavior that

  551. broke it.

  552. You must

  553. also go to

  554. that person

  555. and admit

  556. the things

  557. that you've

  558. done wrong

  559. and say

  560. sorry and

  561. ask for

  562. forgiveness.

  563. This is what

  564. Jesus has

  565. come to

  566. call all

  567. people to

  568. do, to

  569. repent, to

  570. turn away from

  571. sins and to

  572. turn back to

  573. God.

  574. And he's

  575. calling us to

  576. this so that we

  577. might know

  578. God and have

  579. a relationship

  580. with him and

  581. enjoy him.

  582. Well that

  583. brings us to

  584. another, I'm

  585. going to call

  586. it dimension

  587. of repentance

  588. that we see

  589. in the Bible.

  590. Really two

  591. dimensions.

  592. We could

  593. call it

  594. initial

  595. repentance

  596. or first

  597. repentance

  598. and we could

  599. call the other

  600. dimension ongoing

  601. repentance.

  602. When the

  603. Bible speaks

  604. about us

  605. receiving

  606. God's

  607. salvation, we're

  608. called to

  609. repent and

  610. like we've

  611. been talking

  612. about, turn

  613. back to

  614. God and

  615. there is

  616. sort of a

  617. first moment

  618. in which we

  619. do that.

  620. For the

  621. first time

  622. we acknowledge

  623. to God

  624. in prayer

  625. that we've

  626. sinned against

  627. him.

  628. And we say

  629. we're sorry,

  630. we ask for

  631. his forgiveness,

  632. we admit that

  633. his ways are

  634. good and right

  635. and that the

  636. way that we've

  637. been living is

  638. wrong, we

  639. believe, we

  640. accept his

  641. offer of

  642. salvation and

  643. for the first

  644. time we

  645. trust that

  646. what God

  647. has done

  648. through

  649. Jesus is

  650. what we

  651. need.

  652. And when

  653. we do that

  654. for the first

  655. time we are

  656. then baptized

  657. just as the

  658. people were in

  659. Jesus' day,

  660. that's the

  661. outward thing

  662. that's done

  663. to express

  664. the heart

  665. of repentance

  666. repentance.

  667. And we

  668. notice in the

  669. Bible

  670. that to

  671. those who

  672. have already

  673. done this

  674. for the first

  675. time, to

  676. those who have

  677. repented,

  678. Jesus speaks

  679. differently.

  680. And God

  681. speaks differently.

  682. Look at what

  683. Jesus said just

  684. in the previous

  685. chapter to his

  686. disciples.

  687. Luke 12,

    Luke 12:32

  688. verse 32,

  689. he said,

  690. do not be

  691. afraid,

  692. little flock,

  693. for the

  694. Father has

  695. been pleased

  696. to give you

  697. the kingdom.

  698. In that one

  699. verse alone,

  700. there is so

  701. much comfort

  702. and reassurance.

  703. Jesus is not

  704. warning about

  705. fiery punishment

  706. or about

  707. perishing,

  708. but he's

  709. calling his

  710. true followers

  711. children of

  712. God.

  713. Your Father,

  714. he says.

  715. And he's

  716. promising them

  717. that as

  718. children,

  719. they will

  720. inherit the

  721. very kingdom

  722. of God.

  723. And he

  724. says that

  725. God is

  726. pleased to

  727. give it

  728. to them.

  729. And so

  730. when we

  731. truly repent,

  732. when we

  733. turn back

  734. to God

  735. for the

  736. first time,

  737. it changes

  738. our relationship

  739. to God

  740. forever.

  741. We're

  742. reconciled

  743. to him.

  744. That

  745. relationship

  746. is restored

  747. and there

  748. is no

  749. longer a

  750. fear of

  751. perishing

  752. or of

  753. fire or

  754. of judgment.

  755. The stuff

  756. that we

  757. heard about

  758. last week.

  759. We confess

  760. our sins

  761. to him.

  762. We ask

  763. for his

  764. forgiveness.

  765. We believe

  766. in Jesus,

  767. the chosen

  768. one.

  769. And the

  770. Bible tells

  771. us that we

  772. are forgiven

  773. of all of

  774. our sins

  775. and we

  776. are welcomed

  777. into God's

  778. family.

  779. Our

  780. relationship

  781. status with

  782. God goes

  783. from enemy

  784. to son

  785. or daughter

  786. of God.

  787. And right

  788. here at this

  789. point in the

  790. story,

  791. Luke 13,

  792. this is

  793. something that

  794. all of the

  795. true followers

  796. of Jesus

  797. have had

  798. to do.

  799. They have

  800. had to

  801. repent

  802. for the

  803. first time.

  804. John the

  805. baptizer was

  806. the one that

  807. first called

  808. them to it.

  809. And each

  810. one of them

  811. had a moment

  812. of confessing

  813. their sins

  814. and then

  815. being baptized.

  816. baptized.

  817. And then

  818. after John,

  819. Jesus and

  820. his disciples,

  821. they've been

  822. going around

  823. and they've

  824. been calling

  825. people to

  826. repent everywhere

  827. they go.

  828. And baptizing

  829. people.

  830. And it kind

  831. of brings us

  832. to this

  833. question.

  834. Have you

  835. had that

  836. moment of

  837. first repentance?

  838. of turning

  839. back to

  840. God,

  841. acknowledging

  842. your sins

  843. to him,

  844. asking for

  845. his forgiveness,

  846. being baptized

  847. in Jesus'

  848. name.

  849. And if

  850. you haven't

  851. and you'd

  852. like guidance

  853. in this

  854. or to talk

  855. through it,

  856. you can come

  857. find me after

  858. the service

  859. or someone

  860. else here

  861. who you

  862. know has

  863. done these

  864. things,

  865. would be glad

  866. to talk with

  867. you about it.

  868. It's a big

  869. step to take.

  870. And Jesus

  871. always encouraged

  872. people to sit

  873. down and

  874. to count the

  875. cost before

  876. making this

  877. decision.

  878. Have you

  879. had your

  880. moment of

  881. first repentance?

  882. Now,

  883. for many of

  884. us here,

  885. we've done

  886. this.

  887. Some of

  888. us not

  889. too long

  890. ago,

  891. others of

  892. us decades

  893. ago.

  894. And if

  895. you've already

  896. had that

  897. moment of

  898. first repentance,

  899. then these

  900. words of

  901. Jesus ring

  902. differently.

  903. We don't

  904. worry about

  905. ourselves,

  906. but our

  907. hearts are

  908. on those

  909. we love

  910. around us

  911. who have

  912. not yet

  913. repented.

  914. we don't

  915. fear that

  916. we will

  917. perish

  918. because we

  919. know that

  920. there's now

  921. no condemnation

  922. awaiting.

  923. Jesus has

  924. already taken

  925. the punishment

  926. that we

  927. deserve on

  928. himself.

  929. Instead,

  930. we have our

  931. hearts and

  932. our eyes

  933. set on the

  934. glory that

  935. Jesus has

  936. promised to

  937. us.

  938. we're

  939. looking

  940. forward to

  941. being raised

  942. from the

  943. dead by

  944. Jesus when

  945. he returns

  946. and to

  947. eternity with

  948. him in

  949. his kingdom.

  950. When we

  951. read these

  952. words,

  953. unless you

  954. repent,

  955. you too

  956. will all

  957. perish,

  958. we say,

  959. yes,

  960. Jesus,

  961. I know

  962. I'm a

  963. sinner.

  964. I know

  965. I'm guilty.

  966. Thank you,

  967. Lord,

  968. that you have

  969. provided the

  970. way for

  971. us to be

  972. spared what

  973. we deserve.

  974. Thank you

  975. that because

  976. of you,

  977. we're no

  978. longer guilty

  979. or counted

  980. as guilty.

  981. And so

  982. for us who

  983. have already

  984. repented for

  985. the first

  986. time,

  987. we now

  988. practice what

  989. I'm going

  990. to call

  991. ongoing

  992. repentance.

  993. We only

  994. needed to

  995. truly repent

  996. once and

  997. to believe

  998. once in

  999. order to

  1000. be saved.

  1001. but now

  1002. that we've

  1003. been

  1004. reconciled

  1005. to God,

  1006. there is

  1007. still need

  1008. for ongoing

  1009. repentance

  1010. because we

  1011. haven't been

  1012. made perfect

  1013. yet.

  1014. We're still

  1015. tempted

  1016. and we

  1017. still sin.

  1018. And so

  1019. we still

  1020. regularly

  1021. must humble

  1022. ourselves

  1023. before God

  1024. when we

  1025. do those

  1026. things and

  1027. admit that

  1028. we've done

  1029. them and

  1030. ask for

  1031. his forgiveness.

  1032. forgiveness.

  1033. And God

  1034. has promised

  1035. that as

  1036. many times

  1037. as we

  1038. do that,

  1039. he will

  1040. forgive

  1041. because he's

  1042. provided the

  1043. full atonement

  1044. that we need

  1045. in Jesus'

  1046. blood and

  1047. because his

  1048. love is so

  1049. great.

  1050. God

  1051. and so

  1052. I want

  1053. to just

  1054. say a

  1055. word to

  1056. you who

  1057. are

  1058. children of

  1059. God here

  1060. today.

  1061. Is there

  1062. some hidden

  1063. sin or

  1064. struggle with

  1065. sin that

  1066. you've been

  1067. holding on

  1068. to for

  1069. which you

  1070. need to

  1071. repent

  1072. today?

  1073. Jesus'

  1074. command to

  1075. us now is

  1076. to be

  1077. holy as

  1078. I am

  1079. holy.

  1080. As we

  1081. heard earlier,

  1082. there is need

  1083. after our

  1084. initial repenting

  1085. to show our

  1086. repentance in

  1087. our actions

  1088. by turning

  1089. away from

  1090. the evil

  1091. things that

  1092. we have

  1093. been doing

  1094. or thinking

  1095. or desiring

  1096. or planning.

  1097. Is there

  1098. any sin you

  1099. know that

  1100. God wants

  1101. you to

  1102. repent of

  1103. today?

  1104. We're just

  1105. going to take

  1106. a minute right

  1107. now in the

  1108. middle of the

  1109. service to

  1110. just pray.

  1111. And I

  1112. invite you to

  1113. talk to God

  1114. and if

  1115. something comes

  1116. to mind,

  1117. talk to

  1118. him.

  1119. may may

1120. follows up his teaching on repentance with a parable.

  1121. Verse 6.

1122. Then he told this parable.

1123. A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard,

1124. and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.

1125. So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard,

1126. For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree

  1127. and haven't found any.

  1128. Cut it down.

1129. Why should it use up the soil?

1130. Sir, the man replied, leave it alone for one more year,

1131. and I'll dig around it and fertilize it.

1132. If it bears fruit next year, fine.

1133. If not, then cut it down.

1134. So Jesus tells a little parable.

1135. He gives an analogy of a fig tree,

1136. and of course here in Saskatchewan we don't really think too much about fig trees.

1137. So maybe if it helps, imagine an apple tree in an orchard instead.

1138. But one thing we need to catch here is that this tree is growing in his vineyard,

  1139. not in his backyard.

1140. We might keep an unproductive tree in the backyard

1141. simply because the tree is beautiful to look at.

  1142. But a vineyard, just like a farmer's field,

1143. is land for the business and not for the beauty.

1144. The whole point of the vineyard or the orchard

1145. is to get the fruit from what is planted in it.

1146. And considerable work is put into making the plants as productive as possible.

1147. And so if there's a tree in the row that's not producing any good fruit,

1148. then what should be done with it?

1149. It is, as Jesus said, just sort of using up the soil.

1150. It's taking up the space with no return,

1151. and it's using up the nutrients that could go to another tree.

1152. The logical, sensible thing to do is to cut it down.

1153. And it's not like it's the first year that this tree was planted either,

1154. but it's been three years.

1155. There should be some fruit by now.

1156. In the parable, the caretaker intercedes for the tree.

1157. Let's not cut it down just yet.

1158. Give it one more year.

1159. I'll take special care of it.

  1160. I'll dig around it.

  1161. I'll fertilize it.

1162. Digging around it would be to loosen up the soil

1163. so that the moisture can get down to the roots more easily.

1164. And if this next year we get fruit out of it, good.

  1165. Problem solved.

1166. And if not, then you're right.

  1167. Let's cut it down.

1168. That's the sensible thing to do.

  1169. This is an analogy.

1170. And it suggests that God is patient.

1171. He's not eager just to cut us down at the first sign of trouble,

1172. but he is patient and willing to bear with people the extra year,

1173. even though there should be fruit by now.

1174. This parable reminds us that God is watching us.

1175. He had checked on this tree, the owner, three years in a row.

1176. And its fruitlessness didn't escape his notice.

1177. But even still, he is willing to let it go one year more

1178. and give it every chance with special care.

1179. Think of this from the tree's perspective, if we could.

1180. This tree has gone three years with nothing for fruit on it.

  1181. The time is short.

  1182. The stakes are high.

1183. And if with this extra time and special care,

1184. there is still no good fruit,

1185. then we can be sure that the tree is rotten,

  1186. diseased, or dead.

1187. And the only right thing

1188. is to cut it down

1189. and give its place to another.

  1190. Would you find fault

1191. in the owner of the vineyard

1192. for cutting down a tree

  1193. that bore no fruit

  1194. in four consecutive years?

  1195. Would you find fault

  1196. in the farmer

  1197. for burning the field

  1198. that had sprouted late

  1199. and was sickly

1200. with no heads of grain

1201. once the time for harvest had come?

  1202. Would you find fault

  1203. with God

  1204. for purging the wicked

  1205. from his world

1206. when they continue year after year

  1207. to be unresponsive

1208. to his kindness and grace?

1209. This parable is a reminder to us

1210. that if we truly repent,

  1211. we will be changed

  1212. on the inside.

1213. There will be life in us

  1214. by God's Spirit

1215. and it will lead to good fruit

  1216. coming from us.

  1217. Repentance leads

  1218. to love

  1219. coming from our lives

  1220. to good works

  1221. to good thoughts

  1222. and desires

  1223. and decisions

  1224. and plans.

  1225. This parable

1226. is a reminder to us

1227. that if we have not yet

  1228. responded

  1229. to God's call

  1230. to repent,

1231. there will be a day

1232. when he will cut us down

1233. and give us what we're due.

  1234. I believe this is a warning

  1235. to the unrepentant

  1236. and a reminder

  1237. to those

  1238. who maybe have repented

  1239. but are thinking that,

  1240. you know,

1241. I can kind of get away with

  1242. sinning right now.

  1243. It's no biggie.

1244. God will just forgive me.

  1245. God is watching

  1246. for the fruit.

  1247. And if we

  1248. profess faith in Jesus,

  1249. we dare not

  1250. try to play games

  1251. with his grace.

  1252. We dare not

  1253. try to use

  1254. his forgiveness

  1255. as a license

  1256. to sin more.

1257. So have you come back

  1258. to God

  1259. for the first time?

  1260. And if you have,

  1261. are you keeping

  1262. that relationship

  1263. with God well?

  1264. By walking daily

  1265. in repentance.

  1266. Let's pray.

  1267. Lord Jesus,

  1268. we thank you

  1269. that you are merciful,

  1270. that you are quick

  1271. to forgive.

  1272. And I pray

  1273. that you would stir

1274. in all of our hearts,

  1275. that we would confess

  1276. any sins to you

  1277. that we have been

  1278. hanging on to

  1279. and turn from them

  1280. and walk with you.

  1281. Thank you that you

  1282. desire a close

  1283. relationship with us

1284. and that you love us.

  1285. Our hearts can't help

  1286. but go to those

  1287. in our lives

  1288. that we love

  1289. who have not yet

  1290. turned back to you,

  1291. Lord.

  1292. Or who maybe

  1293. seem like they did

  1294. at one time,

  1295. but right now

  1296. are not walking

  1297. with you.

  1298. And we ask

  1299. for your grace

  1300. and mercy

  1301. in their lives

  1302. right now.

  1303. You know the very

  1304. people we're thinking

  1305. of, Lord.

  1306. We also ask

  1307. for boldness

  1308. and graciousness

  1309. not to be ashamed

  1310. of these truths

  1311. that you taught,

  1312. but that we too

  1313. would call people

  1314. in our lives

  1315. to this same thing,

  1316. to repent.

  1317. That's the path

  1318. that you've laid

  1319. before us.

1320. Pray this in your name.

  1321. Amen.

  1322. Amen.

  1323. Amen.
