  1. Well, how many here like to garden or take care of plants?

  2. Well, not as many as I thought.

  3. ! How many of you here like to bake?

  4. It's kind of similar people.

  5. How many of you here have never watered a plant or baked anything in your life?

  6. Okay, so everybody's done at least a little bit.

  7. If not, then maybe you've at least enjoyed someone else's baking

  8. or something that came from their garden.

  9. Well, this morning we're going to hear is Jesus talks gardening and baking.

  10. And some of you at this moment are wondering if you came to the right church this morning.

  11. But I assure you, this morning's message is not Jesus' five tips on how to get a better garden

  12. or better bread.

  13. You can probably find that in the Davidson Leader.

  14. We've been hearing Jesus talk and teach about the kingdom of God.

  15. And Jesus often used the ordinary and everyday stuff of life in his parables

  16. to teach about the kingdom of God.

  17. So we're going to hear a little bit about gardening and baking.

  18. But Jesus is going to use those things to point to something far greater.

  19. Let me read our passage for us this morning.

  20. It's short.

  21. It comes from Luke chapter 13.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  22. Starting in verse 18.

  23. Then Jesus asked,

  24. What is the kingdom of God like?

  25. What shall I compare it to?

  26. It's like a mustard seed,

  27. which a man took and planted in his garden.

  28. It grew and became a tree,

  29. and the birds perched in its branches.

  30. Again, he asked,

  31. What shall I compare the kingdom of God to?

  32. It's like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about 60 pounds of flour

  33. until it worked all through the dough.

  34. The first thing we notice about these parables

  35. is that they're really short

  36. compared to some of Jesus' other ones.

  37. They're kind of like mini parables.

  38. And we also notice that compared to some of the parables

  39. that we've heard from Jesus recently in this gospel,

  40. the parable of the rich fool,

  41. the parable of the sower,

  42. there's no explanation by Jesus

  43. as to what they mean or how to interpret them.

  44. And so the question, of course, is

  45. how is the kingdom of God like these little stories?

  46. The story of the mustard seed and of the yeast.

  47. What does Jesus want us to understand

  48. from these parables?

  49. Let's start with the mustard seed.

  50. Jesus asked,

  51. What is the kingdom of God like?

  52. What shall I compare it to?

  53. It's like a mustard seed,

  54. which a man took and planted in his garden.

  55. It grew and became a tree,

  56. and the birds perched in its branches.

  57. Now there's been lots of discussion

  58. over the precise species of mustard plant

  59. that Jesus is referring to.

  60. Of course, commentators and scholars

  61. love to do that kind of thing.

  62. Most people agree that it likely wasn't the same

  63. as the mustard plants that are grown in today's farmer's fields.

  64. It could be a reference to a black mustard plant

  65. with black seeds.

  66. They're really small seeds.

  67. And these, I guess, can grow as high as 8 or 12 feet

  68. if they're just let to go.

  69. Another good possibility is that it was this plant that

  70. they call it Salvadora persica.

  71. That's probably the Latin technical name.

  72. This one is also called a mustard tree,

  73. and it grows to over 20 feet tall.

  74. It has these small berries that have a pungent mustard flavor.

  75. But the point of the parable, of course,

  76. is not a lesson in archaeology or botany

  77. or to prove the accuracy of the Bible.

  78. Sometimes we get all caught up in this.

  79. You know, is the mustard seed really the smallest of all seeds?

  80. What about the poppy seed?

  81. Isn't that smaller?

  82. You know, did Jesus mean the smallest of every seed on earth?

  83. Or did he just mean of the seeds that would typically be sown

  84. for gardening purposes?

  85. At some point, we just have to acknowledge

  86. this was written over 2,000 years ago

  87. in a region of the world that's different from ours.

  88. And, you know, are we here to critique Jesus

  89. and his use of metaphor?

  90. Or are we here to understand the point that he's making

  91. through the everyday common thing of his people's day?

  92. And that's why Jesus chose this,

  93. because it was common to the people that he was speaking to

  94. in their region of the world.

  95. So we'll give him the benefit of the doubt,

  96. and we'll assume that there was a kind of plant

  97. that was typically grown in or near the garden

  98. back then in the Middle East

  99. that had a really small seed,

  100. but then would grow to be a large tree.

  101. Now, when we look at the details of this little story,

  102. we notice Jesus brings a few things

  103. in particular to our attention.

  104. The first is the size of the mustard seed.

  105. In Matthew's Gospel,

  106. it's phrased a little bit differently.

  107. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, Jesus says.

  108. So he compares it to other seeds.

  109. And again, not every seed on earth,

  110. but probably those in the gardening arena.

  111. The word for plants that's used here

  112. is specifically those that are like vegetables,

  113. things that would be grown in the garden, or herbs.

  114. Now, for those of you who like to eat vegetables and fruits,

  115. texture some of those seeds in your mind.

  116. You've got your pumpkin seeds,

  117. which are quite large.

  118. You've got your watermelon seeds.

  119. You've got your apple seeds,

  120. which are about the same size as watermelon seeds.

  121. The amazing thing is that inside that little seed

  122. is a whole tree waiting to happen.

  123. Then you've got your cherry tomato seed,

  124. even smaller.

  125. And then you've got your mustard seed,

  126. which is like a tiny little black speck of dirt,

  127. like a mini peppercorn.

  128. And then the next thing we notice is

  129. this mustard seed,

  130. what it becomes.

  131. Depending on what species of tree,

  132. what kind of garden,

  133. we get a different picture here.

  134. But either way, Jesus' point is the same.

  135. Relative to all the other plants in the garden,

  136. it's now the largest.

  137. It's the greatest.

  138. And Jesus' point here is not simply to compare

  139. the mustard seed with other seeds

  140. or trees with other trees,

  141. but to point out the vast

  142. and perhaps surprising difference

  143. between how the mustard plant starts

  144. and how it ends.

  145. Though it is the smallest,

  146. it grows and becomes the largest.

  147. This is the first truth

  148. that we're meant to understand

  149. about the kingdom of God.

  150. It's a kingdom of surprisingly humble beginnings.

  151. It began with people like Abram,

  152. a nobody from Ur of the Chaldeans,

  153. that foreigner who lives over there in the tents,

  154. and yeah, the nomadic shepherd guy.

  155. It begins with a baby in a feeding trough

  156. in a little town,

  157. not the capital city,

  158. in a backwater region of the Roman Empire.

  159. And Jesus, from the perspective of the world around,

  160. not a great son of nobility,

  161. but the son of a carpenter,

  162. maybe conceived out of wedlock,

  163. or so it was rumored,

  164. a guy who would later grow up in Nazareth.

  165. And can anything good come from Nazareth?

  166. It's a kingdom of surprisingly humble beginnings.

  167. Some guy named Jesus,

  168. out at the lake with a bunch of fishermen

  169. and a tax collector and some others,

  170. to many,

  171. a pathetic excuse of a movement

  172. whose Messiah or King

  173. was executed like a criminal

  174. only three years after it started.

  175. The smallest and humblest of beginnings.

  176. There was very little by way of pomp

  177. or fanfare.

  178. And yet,

  179. the kingdom of God

  180. will become the largest of all kingdoms

  181. ever to be seen

  182. or known

  183. in this world.

  184. Interestingly,

  185. this is not the first time

  186. in the Bible

  187. that we have this sort of comparison

  188. of kingdoms.

  189. Long ago in the days of the exile,

  190. there was a man named Daniel.

  191. He was one of the wise men

  192. who served King Nebuchadnezzar.

  193. And

  194. in his days,

  195. this was the Babylonian Empire times,

  196. God gave Nebuchadnezzar

  197. these visions,

  198. these dreams.

  199. And in these dreams,

  200. he reminded Nebuchadnezzar

  201. that even

  202. his

  203. great empire,

  204. his great kingdom

  205. would not be

  206. the greatest

  207. that the world would yet see.

  208. Maybe you know the story

  209. if you've read that

  210. in Daniel.

  211. Nebuchadnezzar's first vision

  212. is of

  213. a statue

  214. with a head

  215. that's made of gold.

  216. And

  217. the meaning of the dream

  218. as you read the story,

  219. his

  220. him and his kingdom

  221. are

  222. that head of gold.

  223. Several kingdoms

  224. would follow after,

  225. that's the rest of the parts

  226. of the statue,

  227. but they wouldn't compare

  228. in greatness

  229. and splendor

  230. to his.

  231. And then,

  232. in his vision,

  233. along comes a rock

  234. and smashes

  235. the statue

  236. to pieces.

  237. And we learn

  238. that the rock

  239. is the kingdom

  240. of God.

  241. A kingdom

  242. that will never

  243. be destroyed,

  244. that will last

  245. forever.

  246. In the dream,

  247. it becomes,

  248. the rock

  249. becomes a mountain

  250. and it fills

  251. the whole earth.

  252. That was the first dream

  253. God gave

  254. to Nebuchadnezzar.

  255. in the second dream,

  256. God shows him

  257. a great tree.

  258. So we've got a tree

  259. thing happening

  260. here again.

  261. And it's the tallest

  262. and the greatest tree

  263. on earth.

  264. Daniel says

  265. that the tree

  266. represents

  267. Nebuchadnezzar

  268. and his kingdom.

  269. But then,

  270. as the vision

  271. continues,

  272. an angel

  273. comes down

  274. from heaven

  275. and calls

  276. for the tree

  277. to be cut down.

  278. And it's left

  279. as a stump

  280. on the ground.

  281. And the meaning

  282. of this

  283. was that

  284. Nebuchadnezzar

  285. would be humbled

  286. until he acknowledged

  287. that the one

  288. true God

  289. of heaven

  290. rules.

  291. And that's

  292. exactly what

  293. happened.

  294. There came a day

  295. when Nebuchadnezzar

  296. himself,

  297. the king

  298. of the Babylonian

  299. empire,

  300. said,

  301. the Lord's

  302. dominion

  303. is an eternal

  304. dominion.

  305. His kingdom

  306. endures from

  307. generation

  308. to generation.

  309. The kingdom

  310. of God,

  311. the kingdom

  312. of heaven

  313. will be the

  314. greatest of

  315. kingdoms

  316. that this world

  317. has ever seen

  318. or known

  319. when it comes

  320. in its fullness.

  321. No nation,

  322. no empire,

  323. no kingdom

  324. will compare,

  325. not in size,

  326. not in splendor,

  327. not in any

  328. other measure

  329. of value

  330. or greatness.

  331. But it doesn't

  332. start that way.

  333. The kingdom

  334. of God

  335. doesn't come

  336. like a flash

  337. of lightning

  338. out of nowhere,

  339. but like a

  340. tiny seed

  341. which over

  342. time

  343. gradually

  344. becomes

  345. the great

  346. tree.

  347. On another

  348. occasion,

  349. Jesus said

  350. this,

  351. he said,

  352. I say to you

  353. that many

  354. will come

  355. from the east

  356. and the west

  357. and will take

  358. their places

  359. at the feast

  360. with Abraham,

  361. Isaac,

  362. and Jacob

  363. in the kingdom

  364. of heaven.

  365. Now,

  366. he was talking

  367. about something

  368. else in that

  369. particular

  370. statement,

  371. but what we

  372. see here is

  373. that there

  374. is sort

  375. of a

  376. progression

  377. that's been

  378. happening,

  379. a growth.

  380. This kingdom

  381. has been a

  382. long time

  383. in the making

  384. starting with

  385. Abraham,

  386. Isaac,

  387. and Jacob

  388. and it's a

  389. kingdom that

  390. grows to be

  391. the greatest

  392. from generation

  393. to generation

  394. over a long

  395. period of time

  396. starting from

  397. the smallest

  398. and humblest

  399. of beginnings,

  400. men like

  401. Abraham,

  402. Isaac,

  403. Jacob,

  404. shepherds

  405. and nomads.

  406. But then

  407. when it is

  408. fully grown,

  409. it will be

  410. like that

  411. mustard tree

  412. which stands

  413. taller than

  414. all the other

  415. plants.

  416. The final

  417. detail in

  418. this parable

  419. is how the

  420. mustard seed

  421. after it

  422. becomes a

  423. tree,

  424. the birds

  425. they come

  426. and nest

  427. in its

  428. branches.

  429. Mark

  430. adds in

  431. his account

  432. the detail

  433. of how

  434. its branches

  435. are large

  436. and give

  437. shade for

  438. the birds

  439. to nest

  440. under.

  441. what does

  442. this mean?

  443. Well,

  444. this is not

  445. the first

  446. time that

  447. the kingdom

  448. has been

  449. described as

  450. a tree.

  451. We've kind

  452. of seen

  453. kingdoms

  454. are described

  455. that way

  456. in the

  457. Bible.

  458. Nebuchadnezzar's

  459. vision is

  460. an example

  461. and if we

  462. look a little

  463. more closely

  464. at that

  465. example from

  466. Daniel

    Daniel 4:10

  467. chapter 4

  468. verses 10

  469. there's

  470. just a

  471. little

  472. snippet

  473. of

  474. Nebuchadnezzar's

  475. dream.

  476. I looked

  477. and there

  478. before me

  479. stood a

  480. tree in

  481. the middle

  482. of the

  483. land.

  484. Its height

  485. was enormous.

  486. The tree

  487. grew large

  488. and strong

  489. and its

  490. top touched

  491. the sky.

  492. It was

  493. visible to

  494. the ends

  495. of the

  496. earth.

  497. Its leaves

  498. were beautiful,

  499. its fruit

  500. abundant,

  501. and on it

  502. was food

  503. for all.

  504. Under it

  505. the wild

  506. animals found

  507. shelter and

  508. the birds

  509. lived in

  510. its branches.

  511. From it

  512. every creature

  513. was fed.

  514. And Daniel

  515. says the

  516. tree which

  517. you saw

  518. Nebuchadnezzar

  519. you are

  520. that tree.

  521. You have

  522. become great

  523. and strong.

  524. Your greatness

  525. has grown

  526. until it

  527. reaches the

  528. sky and

  529. your dominion

  530. extends to

  531. distant parts

  532. of the

  533. earth.

  534. And there's

  535. a few other

  536. places which

  537. describe sort

  538. of the birds

  539. nesting in the

  540. tree.

  541. And it's

  542. a positive

  543. thing.

  544. If the

  545. tree is a

  546. kingdom

  547. then those

  548. who come

  549. to live

  550. in the

  551. tree and

  552. build their

  553. nest in it

  554. and live

  555. under its

  556. shelter and

  557. shade,

  558. they're the

  559. people of

  560. the kingdom.

  561. Going back

  562. to our

  563. passage in

  564. Luke,

  565. my translation

  566. doesn't quite

  567. capture it

  568. here.

  569. It says

  570. perch,

  571. but it's

  572. better

  573. translated as

  574. nest.

  575. The tree,

  576. it grew

  577. and became

  578. a tree and

  579. the birds

  580. nested in

  581. its branches.

  582. Let's just

  583. kind of

  584. zero in on

  585. this idea

  586. of birds

  587. and trees

  588. a little bit.

  589. What is a

  590. tree to a

  591. bird?

  592. Or we

  593. could flip it

  594. this way

  595. first.

  596. Where's all

  597. the best

  598. places here

  599. in town to

  600. find birds?

  601. Well, if

  602. you've been

  603. walking around

  604. Davidson at

  605. all, or

  606. maybe if

  607. you're in

  608. Crake, the

  609. streets that

  610. have all the

  611. trees have

  612. all the

  613. birds, or

  614. at least

  615. more of

  616. them.

  617. What is

  618. a tree to

  619. a bird?

  620. To a

  621. bird, a

  622. tree is a

  623. place to

  624. find shelter

  625. from the

  626. elements,

  627. shade from

  628. the heat,

  629. a hollow

  630. maybe inside

  631. the tree that

  632. protects from

  633. the storm.

  634. A tree is a

  635. place that

  636. offers protection

  637. from predators

  638. because its

  639. branches are

  640. high up.

  641. A place to

  642. hold fast to

  643. when the

  644. wind blows

  645. too wild in

  646. Davidson for

  647. the bird to

  648. be airborne.

  649. A tree is a

  650. place with

  651. numerous perches

  652. to gather with

  653. other birds for

  654. a feast of

  655. berries.

  656. Both wax

  657. wings and

  658. sparrows have

  659. this in

  660. common.

  661. They all

  662. perch together

  663. sometimes in

  664. one tree or

  665. hedge or

  666. bush, sometimes

  667. by the

  668. hundreds.

  669. And what do

  670. they do?

  671. Well, I guess

  672. they just sort

  673. of hang out

  674. and sing

  675. together.

  676. A tree is

  677. like a giant

  678. choir loft with

  679. numerous perches

  680. and positions

  681. for every song

  682. in the book.

  683. A place from

  684. which to see

  685. and to find

  686. food.

  687. A place to

  688. find nesting

  689. materials.

  690. A place to

  691. find leaf-eating

  692. insects and

  693. seeds and

  694. berries and

  695. fruit.

  696. In fact, a

  697. tree is so

  698. well-suited to

  699. a bird's life

  700. and needs

  701. that we almost

  702. have to pause

  703. and wonder,

  704. which came

  705. first?

  706. The tree

  707. or the bird?

  708. Or perhaps

  709. God made them

  710. with each

  711. other in

  712. mind.

  713. A tree is

  714. a wonderful

  715. source of

  716. life and

  717. provision and

  718. protection.

  719. It's the

  720. ideal place to

  721. settle and

  722. build a home

  723. for a bird.

  724. So, too,

  725. the kingdom

  726. of God,

  727. when it's

  728. fully grown and

  729. fully established,

  730. will be the

  731. perfect place to

  732. settle and

  733. build a home

  734. for its

  735. people.

  736. A place

  737. where all

  738. who live in

  739. it will find

  740. their needs

  741. met,

  742. opportunity to

  743. flourish without

  744. fear of any

  745. danger or

  746. threat.

  747. That's what the

  748. great kingdom of

  749. God will be one

  750. day to all the

  751. children of the

  752. kingdom who are

  753. in it, to all

  754. the citizens of

  755. it.

  756. The kingdom of

  757. God will be the

  758. greatest and most

  759. glorious kingdom,

  760. the perfect place

  761. to live,

  762. when it comes in

  763. its fullness,

  764. but a kingdom

  765. which, to the

  766. surprise of many,

  767. had the smallest

  768. and humblest of

  769. beginnings.

  770. Let's now look to

  771. the second parable

  772. that Jesus told,

  773. the yeast.

  774. What shall I

  775. compare the

  776. kingdom of God

  777. to?

  778. It's like yeast

  779. that a woman

  780. took and mixed

  781. into about 60

  782. pounds of flour

  783. until it worked

  784. all through the

  785. dough.

  786. Yeast is a

  787. fascinating thing.

  788. Some of us

  789. simply know it as

  790. that stuff that

  791. you buy in the

  792. jar and you

  793. just sort of put

  794. it into your

  795. baking to make

  796. things rise.

  797. But yeast

  798. actually has some

  799. really surprising

  800. characteristics.

  801. things like that.

  802. The most

  803. notable, perhaps,

  804. is its potency.

  805. It's powerful

  806. stuff.

  807. As the old

  808. saying goes,

  809. which is quoted

  810. in the Bible,

  811. a little yeast

  812. leavens the whole

  813. lump.

  814. And that's the

  815. amazing thing about

  816. it.

  817. The amount of

  818. yeast that you put

  819. into the mix

  820. is very small

  821. compared to the

  822. amount of flour

  823. that goes in.

  824. I'm not a

  825. baker myself

  826. or a

  827. biochemist,

  828. so I shouldn't

  829. say too much

  830. here.

  831. But part of the

  832. reason why it's

  833. like that is

  834. because yeast is

  835. alive.

  836. It's a single

  837. cell living

  838. organism,

  839. technically a

  840. fungus.

  841. According to

  842. some estimates,

  843. one teaspoon

  844. of active dry

  845. yeast has up

  846. to 40

  847. billion living

  848. yeast cells

  849. in it.

  850. And those

  851. cells,

  852. they eat

  853. sugar.

  854. And as they

  855. do,

  856. they reproduce

  857. and they

  858. multiply and

  859. they do that

  860. while it's

  861. getting mixed

  862. into the

  863. dough until

  864. they're all

  865. throughout the

  866. whole lump

  867. of dough.

  868. They're eating

  869. sugars,

  870. they're producing

  871. carbon dioxide

  872. gas,

  873. and these

  874. little gas

  875. bubbles are

  876. then trapped

  877. in the

  878. dough.

  879. And that's

  880. what causes

  881. the dough

  882. to rise.

  883. And so the

  884. next time you

  885. slice open a

  886. freshly baked

  887. loaf of

  888. bread,

  889. look at the

  890. holes.

  891. Look at the

  892. evidence of

  893. just how

  894. thoroughly a

  895. little bit of

  896. yeast worked

  897. through that

  898. entire dough

  899. mixture.

  900. It's incredibly

  901. potent stuff.

  902. Only a little

  903. is needed.

  904. The second

  905. thing we notice

  906. here is how

  907. much flour

  908. the woman

  909. mixed the

  910. yeast

  911. into.

  912. Sixty

  913. pounds of

  914. flour.

  915. That's a lot

  916. by one

  917. person's

  918. calculation

  919. enough to

  920. bake bread

  921. for about

  922. 100 to

  923. 150 people.

  924. But while

  925. the amount

  926. of flour

  927. goes up,

  928. the amount

  929. of yeast

  930. doesn't go

  931. up by nearly

  932. as much.

  933. change.

  934. Again, we

  935. can see a

  936. similar truth

  937. emerging in

  938. Jesus'

  939. parable.

  940. The kingdom

  941. of God is

  942. like that,

  943. he says.

  944. What comes

  945. from above,

  946. what comes

  947. from God,

  948. is powerful

  949. stuff.

  950. What began

  951. with something

  952. very small

  953. and seemingly

  954. unimpressive

  955. has the

  956. potential to

  957. utterly

  958. transform

  959. and bring

  960. great change

  961. in ways we

  962. never would

  963. have guessed?

  964. What kind

  965. of changes

  966. are we

  967. talking about?

  968. I mean,

  969. we could

  970. talk about

  971. a couple

  972. different

  973. things.

  974. We could

  975. talk about

  976. this in

  977. terms of

  978. the kingdom

  979. citizens and

  980. how they

  981. become as

  982. numerous as

  983. the sand

  984. on the

  985. seashore.

  986. It's like

  987. that multiplying

  988. of the

  989. yeast.

  990. Or we

  991. could talk

  992. about how

  993. even the

  994. smallest bits

  995. of truth

  996. from God's

  997. word have

  998. the power

  999. to totally

  1000. change a

  1001. person's

  1002. life when

  1003. they embrace

  1004. those truths

  1005. and those

  1006. truths are

  1007. added to

  1008. the mix

  1009. inside of

  1010. them.

  1011. But,

  1012. as with

  1013. the parable

  1014. of the

  1015. mustard seed,

  1016. we also

  1017. notice that

  1018. this isn't

  1019. immediate

  1020. transformation.

  1021. It's a

  1022. gradual

  1023. process.

  1024. I don't

  1025. think they

  1026. have a

  1027. lot of

  1028. yeast.

  1029. But,

  1030. we kind

  1031. of know

  1032. it takes

  1033. time for

  1034. yeast to

  1035. do its

  1036. job and

  1037. for the

  1038. dough to

  1039. rise.

  1040. It's a

  1041. gradual

  1042. process.

  1043. At the

  1044. end of

  1045. the process,

  1046. the difference

  1047. is obvious.

  1048. I mean,

  1049. that lump

  1050. is maybe

  1051. doubled in

  1052. size.

  1053. But,

  1054. if you're

  1055. just sitting

  1056. there staring

  1057. at it,

  1058. it doesn't

  1059. look like

  1060. anything's

  1061. happening.

  1062. Kind of

  1063. like how

  1064. children grow

  1065. and change.

  1066. If you

  1067. just look

  1068. at them

  1069. from one

  1070. day to

  1071. the next,

  1072. you don't

  1073. really notice

  1074. much.

  1075. I see my

  1076. own children

  1077. every day,

  1078. and they

  1079. look the

  1080. same as

  1081. they did

  1082. yesterday.

  1083. Then I

  1084. look back

  1085. on photos

  1086. when they

  1087. were little,

  1088. even younger,

  1089. and I

  1090. barely

  1091. recognized the

  1092. kid in the

  1093. photo.

  1094. Is that

  1095. Laura or

  1096. is that

  1097. Callie?

  1098. It's

  1099. amazing.

  1100. And this

  1101. is kind

  1102. of,

  1103. I'm

  1104. going to

  1105. call this

  1106. the

  1107. invisible

  1108. aspect of

  1109. the

  1110. kingdom

  1111. of

  1112. God.

  1113. Just

  1114. like the

  1115. yeast,

  1116. you don't

  1117. see much

  1118. going into

  1119. the mix,

  1120. and once

  1121. it's mixed

  1122. in,

  1123. you can't

  1124. see at

  1125. all what's

  1126. going on

  1127. with that

  1128. lump of

  1129. dough.

  1130. But just

  1131. because the

  1132. change and

  1133. the growth

  1134. is gradual

  1135. doesn't mean

  1136. that it's

  1137. not happening.

  1138. Time will

  1139. allow the

  1140. difference to

  1141. be seen.

  1142. that's

  1143. how it

  1144. is with

  1145. the

  1146. kingdom

  1147. of

  1148. God.

  1149. It's

  1150. expanding.

  1151. It's

  1152. rising

  1153. gradually.

  1154. The

  1155. number of

  1156. citizens

  1157. in the

  1158. kingdom

  1159. is

  1160. growing

  1161. from

  1162. generation

  1163. to

  1164. generation

  1165. and to

  1166. use

  1167. Jesus

  1168. language,

  1169. one day

  1170. when this

  1171. bread comes

  1172. out of

  1173. the oven

  1174. and Christ

  1175. returns,

  1176. the world

  1177. is going

  1178. to go,

  1179. wow,

  1180. where did

  1181. this come

  1182. from?

  1183. just like

  1184. all the

  1185. holes in

  1186. the bread.

  1187. Where did

  1188. all these

  1189. people come

  1190. from?

  1191. Millions and

  1192. millions of

  1193. them.

  1194. When did

  1195. this happen?

  1196. And it

  1197. all traces

  1198. back to a

  1199. single book

  1200. and the

  1201. God who

  1202. has revealed

  1203. himself in

  1204. its pages

  1205. and his

  1206. son.

  1207. Sometimes

  1208. that's how it

  1209. works in our

  1210. own lives

  1211. too and in

  1212. the lives

  1213. of our

  1214. loved ones.

  1215. We have

  1216. maybe the

  1217. best intentions

  1218. to change,

  1219. to become

  1220. model citizens

  1221. of the

  1222. kingdom,

  1223. to live

  1224. holy lives,

  1225. to stop

  1226. sinning,

  1227. to get our

  1228. priorities

  1229. straight.

  1230. But that

  1231. transformation

  1232. is often

  1233. gradual

  1234. over time.

  1235. It's

  1236. happening.

  1237. The

  1238. difference

  1239. will be

  1240. noticeable

  1241. over time

  1242. but right

  1243. now we

  1244. might not

  1245. see it.

  1246. One time

  1247. a little bit

  1248. later in

  1249. the same

  1250. gospel,

  1251. the Pharisees

  1252. come around

  1253. and they

  1254. ask Jesus,

  1255. when's the

  1256. kingdom of

  1257. God

  1258. going to

  1259. come?

  1260. It's in

  1261. Luke 17

    Luke 17:20

  1262. verse 20.

  1263. On being

  1264. asked by the

  1265. Pharisees when

  1266. the kingdom

  1267. of God

  1268. would come,

  1269. Jesus replied,

  1270. the coming

  1271. of the

  1272. kingdom of

  1273. God is

  1274. not

  1275. something

  1276. that can

  1277. be observed.

  1278. Nor will

  1279. people say,

  1280. here it is

  1281. or there it

  1282. is because

  1283. the kingdom

  1284. of God is

  1285. in your

  1286. midst.

  1287. Isn't that

  1288. something?

  1289. I mean,

  1290. here they are

  1291. asking Jesus,

  1292. when will it

  1293. come?

  1294. And Jesus

  1295. is saying,

  1296. it's not

  1297. something you

  1298. can see.

  1299. In fact,

  1300. it's coming,

  1301. it's happening

  1302. right now.

  1303. And you

  1304. can't see it.

  1305. It's right

  1306. now in your

  1307. midst.

  1308. And yet,

  1309. you're asking,

  1310. where is it?

  1311. When will it

  1312. happen?

  1313. There's this

  1314. invisible quality

  1315. to the

  1316. kingdom.

  1317. And Jesus

  1318. is clear in

  1319. this passage

  1320. that it is

  1321. temporary.

  1322. It's not

  1323. always going

  1324. to be

  1325. invisible.

  1326. Just a few

  1327. verses down,

  1328. he's going to

  1329. tell about how

  1330. the coming

  1331. of the

  1332. Son of

  1333. Man will

  1334. be visible

  1335. to all,

  1336. just like

  1337. lightning

  1338. flashes across

  1339. the sky

  1340. and everyone

  1341. can see it.

  1342. But the

  1343. kingdom of

  1344. God begins

  1345. with something

  1346. seemingly

  1347. small and

  1348. insignificant.

  1349. It rises

  1350. gradually over

  1351. time.

  1352. And it's

  1353. not till the

  1354. end of the

  1355. story when

  1356. God's

  1357. transforming

  1358. power is

  1359. seen for

  1360. what it is

  1361. and the

  1362. effects are

  1363. undeniable

  1364. and take

  1365. the world

  1366. by surprise.

  1367. I wonder

  1368. if all

  1369. too often

  1370. we think

  1371. of things

  1372. the way

  1373. that the

  1374. Pharisees

  1375. did here.

  1376. We see

  1377. the kingdom

  1378. of God

  1379. as only

  1380. something

  1381. that will

  1382. come in

  1383. the distant

  1384. future.

  1385. A future

  1386. event when

  1387. Jesus comes

  1388. back.

  1389. And perhaps

  1390. some of us

  1391. even treat

  1392. our faith

  1393. as a

  1394. ticket to

  1395. get into

  1396. that event

  1397. someday

  1398. and a

  1399. little more.

  1400. But for

  1401. those of us

  1402. who believe

  1403. in Jesus

  1404. what difference

  1405. would it

  1406. make if we

  1407. truly embrace

  1408. this truth

  1409. that the

  1410. kingdom is

  1411. now.

  1412. It's

  1413. growing now.

  1414. We're part

  1415. of it now.

  1416. It goes

  1417. from generation

  1418. to generation.

  1419. It's here

  1420. in some

  1421. measure

  1422. already.

  1423. Imperceptible

  1424. to many

  1425. perhaps.

  1426. Insignificant

  1427. to most.

  1428. Yes.

  1429. But we

  1430. are here

  1431. and through

  1432. us as

  1433. followers of

  1434. Jesus it

  1435. can be said

  1436. truly the

  1437. kingdom of

  1438. God is in

  1439. your midst.

  1440. our faith

  1441. is not

  1442. just something

  1443. that we

  1444. keep in

  1445. our pocket

  1446. until the

  1447. end to

  1448. get into

  1449. the big

  1450. event.

  1451. The

  1452. kingdom

  1453. and the

  1454. life that

  1455. we're meant

  1456. to live as

  1457. citizens of

  1458. the kingdom

  1459. is today.

  1460. It's

  1461. now.

  1462. We are

  1463. part of a

  1464. nation

  1465. today.

  1466. And I'm

  1467. not talking

  1468. about Canada.

  1469. We have

  1470. our allegiance

  1471. and our

  1472. obligation to

  1473. a national

  1474. leader today.

  1475. And I'm

  1476. not talking

  1477. about Mark

  1478. Carney or

  1479. King Charles.

  1480. Listen to

  1481. these words

  1482. of Peter,

  1483. the apostle.

  1484. He says,

  1485. you are a

  1486. chosen people,

  1487. a royal

  1488. priesthood,

  1489. a holy

  1490. nation,

  1491. God's

  1492. special

  1493. possession,

  1494. that you

  1495. may declare

  1496. the praises

  1497. of him

  1498. who called

  1499. you out

  1500. of darkness

  1501. into his

  1502. wonderful

  1503. light.

  1504. I like to

  1505. think when I

  1506. read this

  1507. verse of

  1508. rider nation,

  1509. I always

  1510. like that

  1511. term,

  1512. because even

  1513. though it's

  1514. primarily made

  1515. up of people

  1516. from Saskatchewan,

  1517. it's a term

  1518. that sort of

  1519. transcends the

  1520. geopolitical

  1521. boundaries,

  1522. the provincial

  1523. boundaries.

  1524. Rider nation is

  1525. made up of

  1526. rider fans from

  1527. all over the

  1528. country.

  1529. In some

  1530. cases,

  1531. people are

  1532. even in the

  1533. midst of other

  1534. team loyalties,

  1535. and yet they

  1536. belong to

  1537. rider nation.

  1538. They cheer for

  1539. the riders.

  1540. It is truly,

  1541. in a sense,

  1542. a nation

  1543. within the

  1544. nation.

  1545. I think that's

  1546. a good picture,

  1547. a helpful picture

  1548. of the kind of

  1549. thing that Jesus

  1550. is describing.

  1551. The kingdom

  1552. of God is

  1553. right now

  1554. in your

  1555. midst.

  1556. It exists,

  1557. and I'm not

  1558. talking about

  1559. the riders

  1560. here,

  1561. so don't be

  1562. offended.

  1563. It exists

  1564. imperceptibly

  1565. and unimpressively

  1566. as a nation

  1567. within the

  1568. nation.

  1569. It's a nation

  1570. made up of

  1571. people from

  1572. all the

  1573. nations.

  1574. It transcends

  1575. political

  1576. boundaries.

  1577. I mean,

  1578. if we consider

  1579. ourselves to be

  1580. a part of

  1581. rider nation,

  1582. how much

  1583. more should

  1584. we consider

  1585. ourselves as

  1586. followers of

  1587. Jesus,

  1588. to be a

  1589. part of

  1590. his nation?

  1591. Those of

  1592. you who

  1593. love to

  1594. watch or

  1595. play sports,

  1596. do you

  1597. wear your

  1598. colors proudly

  1599. at your

  1600. team's

  1601. games?

  1602. Do you

  1603. wear your

  1604. colors proudly

  1605. even when

  1606. you're not

  1607. at the

  1608. game?

  1609. Do you

  1610. make much

  1611. of your

  1612. team at

  1613. every

  1614. opportunity,

  1615. especially if

  1616. someone decides

  1617. they're going

  1618. to talk down

  1619. against them?

  1620. Does your

  1621. heart swell

  1622. with pride

  1623. whenever they

  1624. score or

  1625. whenever they

  1626. win?

  1627. That's just

  1628. sports and

  1629. recreation.

  1630. We should

  1631. be no

  1632. less as

  1633. Christians.

  1634. Do you

  1635. wear your

  1636. colors proudly

  1637. as a

  1638. citizen of

  1639. the kingdom

  1640. of heaven?

  1641. Even when

  1642. you're not

  1643. in church?

  1644. do you

  1645. make much

  1646. of your

  1647. king,

  1648. Jesus,

  1649. and his

  1650. kingdom,

  1651. even when

  1652. you're not

  1653. in church?

  1654. This is

  1655. where the

  1656. trouble lies

  1657. though.

  1658. We don't

  1659. like to

  1660. make much

  1661. of something

  1662. that not

  1663. everybody

  1664. can see.

  1665. Even

  1666. sometimes

  1667. people oppose

  1668. it.

  1669. And so

  1670. we don't

  1671. want to

  1672. make much

  1673. of a

  1674. kingdom

  1675. that's

  1676. invisible

  1677. or that

  1678. has humble

  1679. beginnings

  1680. because our

  1681. world values

  1682. what's

  1683. impressive.

  1684. The fast

  1685. growing,

  1686. the stuff

  1687. that starts

  1688. with greatness.

  1689. is

  1690. yet these

  1691. parables

  1692. help us

  1693. see that

  1694. there is

  1695. this

  1696. tension

  1697. and it's

  1698. normal.

  1699. People

  1700. will look

  1701. at our

  1702. faith

  1703. and say

  1704. what is

  1705. that?

  1706. What

  1707. difference

  1708. is that

  1709. going to

  1710. make?

  1711. Just like

  1712. a little

  1713. seed or

  1714. a little

  1715. bit of

  1716. yeast.

  1717. But listen

  1718. again to

  1719. what Peter

  1720. said to

  1721. the churches

  1722. in his

  1723. letter.

  1724. 2 Peter

  1725. 3.9

  1726. or 3.3

  1727. I should

  1728. say.

  1729. He said

  1730. above all

  1731. you must

  1732. understand

  1733. that in

  1734. the last

  1735. days

  1736. scoffers

  1737. will come

  1738. scoffing

  1739. and following

  1740. their own

  1741. evil

  1742. desires.

  1743. They will

  1744. say where

  1745. is this

  1746. coming?

  1747. He promised.

  1748. Ever

  1749. since our

  1750. ancestors

  1751. died

  1752. everything

  1753. goes on

  1754. as it

  1755. has

  1756. since the

  1757. beginning.

  1758. In other

  1759. words they'll

  1760. be saying

  1761. we don't

  1762. see it.

  1763. Where is

  1764. the kingdom?

  1765. Where is

  1766. the king?

  1767. He goes

  1768. on to say

  1769. the day

  1770. of the

  1771. Lord will

  1772. come like

  1773. a thief.

  1774. Jesus said

  1775. that too.

  1776. The world

  1777. will look

  1778. in complete

  1779. surprise at

  1780. this unexpected

  1781. reality and

  1782. realize all

  1783. along this

  1784. kingdom was

  1785. there among

  1786. us and

  1787. now it's

  1788. risen.

  1789. It's the

  1790. thing.

  1791. the people

  1792. of the

  1793. kingdom

  1794. they were

  1795. there all

  1796. along.

  1797. They were

  1798. trusting in

  1799. this.

  1800. If you

  1801. could lay

  1802. your life

  1803. down for

  1804. one cause

  1805. what would

  1806. it be?

  1807. If you

  1808. can use

  1809. your words

  1810. to sing

  1811. the praises

  1812. of one

  1813. thing

  1814. what will

  1815. it be?

  1816. I hope

  1817. it's not

  1818. writer

  1819. nation.

  1820. I hope

  1821. it's

  1822. Jesus

  1823. nation.

  1824. For you

  1825. are a

  1826. chosen

  1827. people

  1828. a holy

  1829. nation

  1830. God's

  1831. special

  1832. possession

  1833. that

  1834. you may

  1835. declare

  1836. the praises

  1837. of him

  1838. who called

  1839. you out

  1840. of darkness

  1841. into his

  1842. wonderful

  1843. light.

  1844. God is

  1845. building his

  1846. kingdom.

  1847. It may not

  1848. look like

  1849. much now

  1850. but in

  1851. time it

  1852. will be the

  1853. greatest that

  1854. this world

  1855. has ever

  1856. known.

  1857. It will

  1858. be the

  1859. most amazing

  1860. place in

  1861. which to

  1862. live and

  1863. build a

  1864. home and

  1865. it's what we

  1866. should be

  1867. setting our

  1868. hearts and

  1869. our hopes

  1870. on.

  1871. Let's pray.

  1872. Father in

  1873. heaven it

  1874. takes faith

  1875. for us to

  1876. embrace this

  1877. in the world

  1878. that we

  1879. live in.

  1880. You know

  1881. that and

  1882. so we ask

  1883. for your

  1884. help in

  1885. these moments

  1886. to really

  1887. believe these

  1888. words and

  1889. to put our

  1890. lives on

  1891. these words.

  1892. these words

  1893. that you

  1894. gave us

  1895. Lord they

  1896. are the

  1897. rock and

  1898. what the

  1899. world is

  1900. telling us

  1901. is important

  1902. is the

  1903. sand.

  1904. Help us

  1905. build our

  1906. lives on

  1907. your words

  1908. and trust

  1909. them deeply.

  1910. We ask

  1911. this in

  1912. your name.

  1913. Amen.
