  1. Well, this morning we are continuing our way through the story of Jesus as told by Luke.

  2. ! We're at the part in the story right now where Jesus is on his final journey to Jerusalem before

  3. ! He's crucified. And some of you may have noticed that the closer and closer we get

  4. to Jerusalem, the more opposition Jesus faces. And you might have also noticed as well, that

  5. the closer he gets to Jerusalem, the more serious and sobering the tone of Jesus' teachings and

  6. warnings. And there is this theme of urgency in much of what Jesus has been saying. We heard it in the

  7. parable of the rich fool. We heard it in the parable of the servant whose master had gone but would

  8. later return. Keep watch and be ready. We heard this tone of urgency in Jesus' call to repent or else

  9. perish. And it gets even stronger in our passage today. Responding to Jesus is an urgent matter

  10. because none of us knows how much time we have left. And eventually there will come a day when our time

  11. to respond is up and it will be too late. Let's hear this though from Jesus himself.

  12. Our passage this morning comes from the gospel of Luke chapter 13 starting in verse 22.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  13. Then Jesus went through the towns and villages teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.

  14. Someone asked him, Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?

  15. Jesus said to them, make every effort to enter through the narrow door.

  16. Because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

  17. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading,

  18. saying, Sir, open the door for us. But he will answer, I don't know you or where you come from.

  19. Then you will say, we ate and drank with you and you taught in our streets.

  20. But he will reply, I don't know you or where you come from.

  21. Away from me, all you evildoers.

  22. There will be weeping there and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob

  23. and all the prophets in the kingdom of God.

  24. But you yourselves thrown out.

  25. People will come from east and west and north and south

  26. and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.

  27. Indeed, there are those who are last who will be first.

  28. And first who will be last.

  29. So as Jesus is traveling through the towns and villages on his way to Jerusalem,

  30. somewhere along the way, someone asks this question.

  31. Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?

  32. The opposition to Jesus is growing stronger.

  33. Many are obviously rejecting him or ignoring him.

  34. We notice the way that Jesus addressed his followers back in chapter 12, verse 32.

  35. He said, do not be afraid, little flock.

  36. There may be large crowds of thousands around Jesus a lot of the time.

  37. But those truly committed to following Jesus are a little flock among them.

  38. And so it's not surprising that someone finally asks Jesus point blank,

  39. Lord, are only a few going to be saved?

  40. It's becoming apparent to Jesus' followers that many in Israel are not accepting Jesus as their Messiah.

  41. Now, this guy who asked the question, we know very little about him.

  42. He calls Jesus Lord.

  43. He uses that language of being saved, which we also use.

  44. So at the least, he's been listening to Jesus.

  45. Because Jesus has been talking about salvation a lot.

  46. And the need for it.

  47. Many of the Jews, especially the rabbis and the teachers,

  48. they just didn't talk like this about needing to be saved.

  49. So at the least, this guy's been listening to Jesus.

  50. Of course, the people, they didn't talk like that because they kind of, many of them assumed,

  51. well, we're all saved.

  52. We're all the chosen people of God.

  53. We're all descended from Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.

  54. So we kind of, we inherit this kingdom by default.

  55. But no, Jesus has been saying, there is still a need for you to repent.

  56. We heard that earlier in the chapter, the first nine verses.

  57. And unless you repent, you will perish, he said.

  58. You'll get what you deserve from God for your sins.

  59. And so we have need to be saved from that.

  60. And this man's question is specifically about how many will be saved.

  61. Because it's not looking like the majority at the moment will embrace Jesus.

  62. And so are only a few people going to be saved?

  63. And Jesus' response here is thought-provoking.

  64. He kind of answers the question in a roundabout or indirect sort of way.

  65. But then in another sense, it's almost as if he just changes the question.

  66. Let's look at his answer again in verse 24.

  67. Jesus replies with this.

  68. He says, make every effort to enter through the narrow door.

  69. Because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

  70. So Jesus doesn't give a number.

  71. He doesn't say, yes, it's going to be just a few or no.

  72. Instead, he looks them in the eye and he urges them directly and personally.

  73. You do what you need to do in order to be saved.

  74. Make every effort to enter through the narrow door.

  75. We notice Jesus slip into sort of metaphorical language.

  76. The language of analogy.

  77. He likens being saved to going through a door.

  78. And then as Jesus goes on, this analogy of a door sort of expands into a miniature parable.

  79. In verse 25, he says,

  80. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door,

  81. you will stand outside knocking and pleading.

  82. Sir, open the door for us.

  83. But he will answer,

  84. I don't know you or where you come from.

  85. So we've got a little story here.

  86. And what's sort of ominous about this story is that it's a true story

  87. of what Jesus says will happen to you

  88. if you do not enter through the narrow door before it closes.

  89. It's sort of a parable,

  90. a prophetic parable of warning.

  91. Jesus is basically announcing to the people,

  92. this will be your fate someday,

  93. unless right now you make every effort to enter through the narrow door.

  94. And so being saved is likened to entering the door of a house.

  95. And there's coming a day when the homeowner will get up and close the door.

  96. One other helpful thing to notice in this passage,

  97. before we get into some of the details,

  98. did you notice how by the end of the passage,

  99. we're talking about entering the kingdom of God?

  100. What we notice is that being saved

  101. and entering the kingdom of God

  102. are two different ways of describing the same thing.

  103. The question was,

  104. are only a few going to be saved?

  105. The answer was,

  106. make every effort to enter through the narrow door.

  107. And by the time we get down to verse 28,

  108. we read about those who are shut out of the house.

  109. And Jesus says about them,

  110. that there will be weeping there and gnashing of teeth

  111. when you see Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  112. and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,

  113. but you yourselves cast out.

  114. And so being saved and getting into the kingdom of God,

  115. it's really two different ways of describing the same thing.

  116. And it helps us understand this

  117. as we work through some of the details.

  118. Let's look at some of these details.

  119. The first detail that really grabs me

  120. is the language Jesus uses in his very first words

  121. to answer the question.

  122. Are only a few going to be saved?

  123. The first thing he says is,

  124. make every effort

  125. to enter

  126. through the narrow door.

  127. Make

  128. every effort.

  129. Does that sound like Jesus is serious?

  130. These words,

  131. make every effort,

  132. they trace back to a single

  133. Greek word,

  134. agonizomai,

  135. from which we get our English word,

  136. agonize.

  137. And so really,

  138. this translation is actually a little bit flat.

  139. It doesn't fully capture the intensity.

  140. This is the same word

  141. that's used elsewhere in the New Testament

  142. to describe fighting.

  143. The word was often used

  144. to describe the struggle

  145. or the fight

  146. or the wrestle

  147. in athletic competition.

  148. Jesus will later say to Pilate,

  149. if my kingdom were of this world,

  150. my servants would fight

  151. to prevent my arrest.

  152. It's the same word here.

  153. Paul in his letter to Timothy

  154. will later urge Timothy,

  155. fight the good fight.

  156. It's the same word here.

  157. Make every effort,

  158. fight,

  159. struggle,

  160. strain with all your might

  161. to enter

  162. through the narrow door.

  163. does it surprise you

  164. to hear Jesus talk this way

  165. about being saved?

  166. About what you need to do

  167. to be saved?

  168. I mean,

  169. think of what Jesus

  170. could have said

  171. instead of this.

  172. Or,

  173. maybe,

  174. what do we expect him

  175. in our sort of

  176. North American Christianity

  177. to say

  178. in this moment?

  179. You know,

  180. hey,

  181. if you want to be saved,

  182. it's really easy.

  183. All you need to do

  184. is come up to the front

  185. and pray a prayer.

  186. And yet,

  187. what Jesus says here

  188. is the total opposite.

  189. He says,

  190. fight

  191. to enter

  192. through the narrow door.

  193. It's not an easy thing.

  194. It's not an automatic thing.

  195. Being saved

  196. requires that we struggle,

  197. that we strain

  198. with all our might

  199. to enter

  200. through this narrow door.

  201. Now,

  202. what does that even mean?

  203. We've got to translate

  204. the metaphor here.

  205. Jesus is not saying

  206. that we need to make

  207. every effort

  208. and do a whole bunch

  209. of good works

  210. in order to be saved.

  211. That's not the kind of fight

  212. he's talking about.

  213. It's not a physical fight

  214. to do all the good

  215. that we can.

  216. It's a spiritual fight.

  217. It's a fight

  218. to find

  219. and get through

  220. the narrow door

  221. into the house

  222. of the homeowner.

  223. And we kind of have to take

  224. the whole analogy

  225. into account here.

  226. In the parable,

  227. the house is,

  228. it represents God,

  229. God's house,

  230. His kingdom.

  231. He's the homeowner.

  232. His door of salvation

  233. is open.

  234. And He has sent His Son

  235. out to call people

  236. to come in,

  237. to enter through the door,

  238. to be saved,

  239. to come and enter

  240. into the kingdom of God.

  241. And what do we need to do?

  242. Well, He says,

  243. we need to fight.

  244. We need to struggle.

  245. We need to make every effort

  246. to enter through that door,

  247. which means

  248. to make every effort

  249. to understand

  250. the things that Jesus

  251. has been saying

  252. about how to be saved.

  253. It means fighting

  254. to draw near

  255. and take to heart

  256. all the things

  257. that Jesus has been

  258. explaining.

  259. It means struggling

  260. with our hearts

  261. and our desires

  262. to do something

  263. we maybe don't want to do

  264. and go through

  265. this door

  266. that Jesus has laid

  267. before us.

  268. Why is it a struggle?

  269. Why is it a fight?

  270. Well, there's this sickness

  271. of sin inside of us

  272. and it keeps telling us

  273. we don't need God.

  274. It keeps telling us

  275. just ignore Him.

  276. He'll be content

  277. with sort of

  278. the bare minimum

  279. from you.

  280. You don't need

  281. to do too much.

  282. Maybe just show up

  283. to church once in a while,

  284. believe in your heart

  285. and pray once in a while.

  286. He'll be okay with that.

  287. There's this sickness

  288. in all of us

  289. that makes us

  290. just by nature

  291. want to ignore God

  292. and go our own way.

  293. That's what we must

  294. fight against.

  295. That's what we must

  296. struggle against

  297. in order to enter

  298. through the narrow door.

  299. what holds us back

  300. from entering in

  301. is our own

  302. warped

  303. desires

  304. and hearts

  305. and minds.

  306. What holds us back

  307. is our love

  308. of comfort

  309. and pleasure

  310. and ease.

  311. But following Jesus

  312. runs against

  313. those things.

  314. We heard Jesus say

  315. back in chapter 9,

  316. whoever wants to be

  317. my disciple

  318. must deny himself

  319. and take up

  320. his cross

  321. daily

  322. and follow me.

  323. And it's a fight

  324. to do that.

  325. It's a battle

  326. inside of us.

  327. I mean,

  328. we might have

  329. some external

  330. voices of people

  331. we know

  332. whether friends

  333. or family

  334. fighting against us

  335. because maybe

  336. they don't approve

  337. of us following Jesus.

  338. But ultimately

  339. the battle

  340. takes place

  341. within us.

  342. let's think back

  343. over what Jesus

  344. just recently said

  345. about what we must

  346. do to be saved.

  347. Just earlier in this

  348. chapter,

  349. the first nine

  350. verses,

  351. he told the people

  352. they must repent

  353. or else they too

  354. would perish.

  355. But to repent

  356. means that we have

  357. to humble ourselves

  358. before God.

  359. It means that we

  360. have to admit to him

  361. the wrong things

  362. that we've done.

  363. it means that he's

  364. going to get to be

  365. the boss

  366. and in charge

  367. of our lives

  368. and not me

  369. anymore.

  370. And so that's why

  371. it's a fight

  372. because those are

  373. all things we

  374. don't want to do

  375. because we're proud

  376. and we don't want

  377. to admit

  378. that we've done wrong.

  379. We don't want to

  380. let somebody else

  381. be in charge

  382. of our lives.

  383. No, I want to

  384. call the shots

  385. in my life.

  386. I want to be the boss.

  387. And so that's

  388. the fight.

  389. It's a spiritual

  390. fight or struggle

  391. to be saved,

  392. to do what Jesus

  393. says we need to do

  394. in order to be saved.

  395. We can't help

  396. but notice

  397. how Jesus describes

  398. the door

  399. of salvation.

  400. He says,

  401. make every effort

  402. to enter

  403. through the narrow

  404. door.

  405. In other words,

  406. it's not easy

  407. to get through.

  408. of the doors

  409. available out there

  410. to go through

  411. in life,

  412. many others

  413. are bigger

  414. and easier,

  415. much easier

  416. to go through.

  417. But this one

  418. is hard to get

  419. through.

  420. It's going to cost

  421. us.

  422. There's going to be

  423. some things that

  424. we may need to

  425. give up

  426. or that we may

  427. need to lose,

  428. let go of

  429. to go through

  430. this door.

  431. door.

  432. The door is

  433. narrow.

  434. As I mentioned

  435. at the beginning,

  436. do you hear the

  437. sense of urgency

  438. in Jesus'

  439. words?

  440. Make every effort

  441. to enter through

  442. the narrow door

  443. because many,

  444. I tell you,

  445. will try to enter

  446. and will not

  447. be able to.

  448. There's a sense

  449. of urgency here.

  450. this is where

  451. Jesus' analogy

  452. turns into this

  453. prophetic parable

  454. of warning

  455. to us.

  456. You know,

  457. if we just stop

  458. right here at this

  459. verse and just

  460. leave it right there,

  461. we might come to

  462. some wrong ideas.

  463. We might come to

  464. the idea that there

  465. are many earnest

  466. and humble people

  467. trying to be saved.

  468. They're trying to get

  469. through the door,

  470. but the size is just

  471. so small of this door

  472. that many perish

  473. while making an

  474. earnest attempt

  475. to get through.

  476. This is completely

  477. wrong.

  478. We might even get

  479. the idea in our

  480. heads that many

  481. will perish and

  482. it's God's fault

  483. for making the door

  484. so small to get

  485. into his kingdom.

  486. This too is

  487. completely wrong.

  488. Why will many

  489. try to enter

  490. and not be able

  491. to?

  492. Well,

  493. Jesus answers

  494. that question

  495. with the parable.

  496. Let's listen

  497. to what he says

  498. in verse 25

  499. and on.

  500. He says,

  501. Once the owner

  502. of the house

  503. gets up

  504. and closes

  505. the door,

  506. you will stand

  507. outside knocking

  508. and pleading.

  509. Sir,

  510. open the door

  511. for us.

  512. But he will

  513. answer,

  514. I don't know

  515. you or where

  516. you come from.

  517. Then you will

  518. say,

  519. We ate and

  520. drank with you

  521. and you taught

  522. in our streets.

  523. But he will

  524. reply,

  525. I don't know

  526. you or where

  527. you come from.

  528. Away from me,

  529. all you

  530. evildoers.

  531. So many will

  532. try to enter

  533. the narrow door

  534. but will not

  535. be able to.

  536. Why?

  537. Because the door

  538. has been shut

  539. and it's now

  540. too late.

  541. Jesus gives

  542. this chilling

  543. conversation

  544. between the

  545. homeowner

  546. and the

  547. people outside

  548. the door

  549. and they're

  550. pleading to

  551. get inside.

  552. Sir,

  553. open the

  554. door for

  555. us.

  556. And the

  557. words of the

  558. homeowner,

  559. they're just

  560. chilling,

  561. I don't

  562. know you

  563. or where

  564. you are

  565. from.

  566. And what

  567. do they say

  568. in response?

  569. Well,

  570. what do you

  571. mean you

  572. don't know

  573. us?

  574. We ate

  575. and drank

  576. with you,

  577. Jesus.

  578. Jesus,

  579. you taught

  580. in our

  581. streets.

  582. they're

  583. trying to

  584. convince

  585. Jesus,

  586. you know,

  587. you know

  588. us and

  589. we know

  590. you,

  591. let us

  592. in.

  593. And what

  594. do they

  595. point back

  596. to?

  597. Like,

  598. Jesus,

  599. we ate

  600. meals

  601. with you.

  602. Remember?

  603. I mean,

  604. Jesus has

  605. been in

  606. almost every

  607. town or

  608. village in

  609. Israel and

  610. many of

  611. them have

  612. come to

  613. see him

  614. all over

  615. the place.

  616. They've

  617. been part

  618. of the

  619. crowds.

  620. Jesus has

  621. accepted

  622. dinner

  623. invitations

  624. and he

  625. has sat

  626. down

  627. face to

  628. face with

  629. people in

  630. their

  631. homes and

  632. said all

  633. these same

  634. sorts of

  635. things.

  636. They sat

  637. with him

  638. and they

  639. ate with

  640. him at

  641. the feeding

  642. of the

  643. 5,000,

  644. the whole

  645. crowd of

  646. them.

  647. So,

  648. they're

  649. right.

  650. They did

  651. eat with

  652. Jesus.

  653. But what

  654. they really

  655. mean by

  656. this is,

  657. Jesus,

  658. we had an

  659. intimate

  660. relationship

  661. with you.

  662. Remember

  663. that time

  664. when we

  665. broke bread

  666. together?

  667. I mean,

  668. it's like we

  669. were eating

  670. at the

  671. same table.

  672. We know

  673. you.

  674. You know

  675. us.

  676. You came

  677. to our

  678. town and

  679. taught us.

  680. But these

  681. words are

  682. very revealing.

  683. if they

  684. were this

  685. close to

  686. Jesus and

  687. heard him

  688. teach in

  689. their

  690. streets,

  691. then why

  692. didn't they

  693. listen to

  694. what Jesus

  695. said and

  696. enter through

  697. the narrow

  698. door while

  699. it was

  700. open?

  701. Why didn't

  702. they repent

  703. when Jesus

  704. called them

  705. to repent?

  706. Jesus,

  707. who is

  708. the

  709. homeowner

  710. or becomes

  711. the homeowner

  712. in this

  713. parable,

  714. he gives

  715. the truth

  716. about their

  717. relationship.

  718. He says,

  719. I don't

  720. know you.

  721. In other

  722. words,

  723. we never

  724. had a

  725. real

  726. relationship.

  727. And there's

  728. at least one

  729. evidence that

  730. Jesus gives.

  731. Look at what

  732. Jesus says

  733. to them,

  734. he says,

  735. away from

  736. me,

  737. all you

  738. evildoers.

  739. Quite

  740. literally,

  741. you workers

  742. of unrighteousness.

  743. So did

  744. they repent

  745. of their

  746. sins?

  747. Or did

  748. they just

  749. keep on

  750. doing them?

  751. Did they

  752. turn back

  753. to God

  754. or did

  755. they just

  756. keep on

  757. ignoring

  758. him?

  759. They never

  760. repented.

  761. They

  762. never

  763. responded

  764. to

  765. Jesus.

  766. They

  767. ignored

  768. him.

  769. They

  770. rejected

  771. the

  772. invitation

  773. to come

  774. through

  775. the

  776. door

  777. while it

  778. was

  779. open.

  780. And it's

  781. only now

  782. that the

  783. door has

  784. been shut

  785. that the

  786. danger of

  787. God's

  788. punishment

  789. is imminent

  790. that they're

  791. trying to get

  792. through the

  793. door.

  794. door.

  795. And these

  796. words are

  797. devastating.

  798. They are

  799. locked,

  800. shut out

  801. of the

  802. kingdom of

  803. God.

  804. The voice

  805. on the

  806. other side

  807. says,

  808. I don't

  809. know you.

  810. Away from

  811. me,

  812. all you

  813. workers of

  814. unrighteousness.

  815. And Jesus

  816. goes right

  817. into this

  818. explanation

  819. of what

  820. all this

  821. means with

  822. the shocking

  823. statements.

  824. Verse 28,

  825. he says,

  826. there will

  827. be weeping

  828. there and

  829. gnashing of

  830. teeth when

  831. you see

  832. Abraham,

  833. Isaac,

  834. and Jacob

  835. and all

  836. the prophets

  837. in the

  838. kingdom of

  839. God.

  840. But you

  841. yourselves

  842. thrown out.

  843. This is the

  844. same language

  845. Jesus uses on

  846. other occasions

  847. to describe

  848. the agony

  849. of hell.

  850. Weeping.

  851. It's a place

  852. of sorrow,

  853. deep sorrow

  854. and sadness.

  855. It's a place

  856. of gnashing

  857. of teeth.

  858. That word

  859. gnashing means

  860. grinding or

  861. gritting

  862. together of

  863. the teeth.

  864. It's a

  865. physical

  866. description of

  867. what happens

  868. in our

  869. jaws when

  870. we experience

  871. intense pain

  872. and anguish.

  873. Jesus says,

  874. that's what

  875. you will

  876. experience.

  877. as you

  878. see

  879. Abraham,

  880. Isaac,

  881. and Jacob

  882. and all

  883. the prophets

  884. in the

  885. kingdom of

  886. God.

  887. But you

  888. yourselves

  889. cast out,

  890. shut out,

  891. wishing and

  892. longing that

  893. you could get

  894. in.

  895. We have to

  896. know this

  897. would have

  898. deeply shocked

  899. the people

  900. in Jesus'

  901. day.

  902. God

  903. the Jews

  904. considered

  905. themselves,

  906. as I

  907. mentioned

  908. earlier,

  909. to be

  910. the children

  911. of Abraham,

  912. inheritors

  913. of the

  914. kingdom by

  915. default,

  916. automatic

  917. recipients of

  918. all the good

  919. promises that

  920. God has

  921. made about

  922. the kingdom

  923. through the

  924. prophets over

  925. the centuries.

  926. And now

  927. Jesus comes

  928. and he says,

  929. unless you

  930. repent,

  931. you will

  932. perish.

  933. this is

  934. what will

  935. happen to

  936. you.

  937. You will

  938. find

  939. yourselves

  940. cast out

  941. in agony,

  942. in anguish,

  943. while those

  944. of true

  945. faith are

  946. inside.

  947. Jesus

  948. intensifies it

  949. one notch

  950. more in the

  951. next verse,

  952. 29.

  953. He says,

  954. people will

  955. come from

  956. east and

  957. west and

  958. north and

  959. south and

  960. will take

  961. their places

  962. at the

  963. feast.

  964. in the

  965. kingdom of

  966. God.

  967. Part of

  968. the shock,

  969. part of

  970. the grief

  971. and the

  972. anguish

  973. will be

  974. this deeply

  975. humbling

  976. reality that

  977. people from

  978. all over

  979. the world,

  980. not just

  981. Jews,

  982. but people

  983. from the

  984. north and

  985. south and

  986. east and

  987. west,

  988. all over

  989. the place,

  990. are inside

  991. this kingdom.

  992. They

  993. responded to

  994. Jesus in

  995. faith.

  996. They accepted

  997. him as

  998. their Messiah.

  999. They're in

  1000. the house,

  1001. at the

  1002. table,

  1003. feasting

  1004. in the

  1005. kingdom of

  1006. God.

  1007. And yet

  1008. they,

  1009. the flesh

  1010. and blood

  1011. descendants,

  1012. are cast

  1013. out,

  1014. shut out

  1015. of the

  1016. banquet.

  1017. What a

  1018. sobering

  1019. warning and

  1020. teaching.

  1021. Now there's a

  1022. couple different

  1023. responses this

  1024. might provoke

  1025. in us today

  1026. as we

  1027. listen to

  1028. this.

  1029. First,

  1030. of course,

  1031. there's going

  1032. to be some

  1033. who will

  1034. accuse God

  1035. of being

  1036. heartless and

  1037. evil.

  1038. How come

  1039. he wouldn't

  1040. change his

  1041. mind and

  1042. let them

  1043. in at

  1044. the last

  1045. when they

  1046. finally said,

  1047. okay,

  1048. we want to

  1049. come in.

  1050. But we

  1051. must remember

  1052. that God

  1053. is just.

  1054. He is

  1055. exceedingly

  1056. patient and

  1057. compassionate.

  1058. I mean,

  1059. think about

  1060. in your own

  1061. life.

  1062. How long

  1063. has God

  1064. kept the

  1065. door open

  1066. for you?

  1067. How many

  1068. opportunities

  1069. have you

  1070. had to

  1071. respond to

  1072. the words

  1073. of Jesus?

  1074. How long

  1075. must God

  1076. wait till

  1077. he gives

  1078. us what

  1079. we're due?

  1080. he is

  1081. exceedingly

  1082. patient and

  1083. compassionate.

  1084. But he

  1085. is also

  1086. just.

  1087. And evil

  1088. must eventually

  1089. be purged.

  1090. Sin must

  1091. eventually be

  1092. punished.

  1093. And if we

  1094. won't accept

  1095. Christ on

  1096. his terms,

  1097. then we

  1098. won't have

  1099. his forgiveness.

  1100. And we

  1101. will find

  1102. ourselves

  1103. cast out,

  1104. looking in,

  1105. from the

  1106. outside,

  1107. in anguish.

  1108. It's only

  1109. through

  1110. relationship

  1111. with Jesus

  1112. that we

  1113. can enter

  1114. through

  1115. the narrow

  1116. door.

  1117. An

  1118. authentic,

  1119. living,

  1120. real

  1121. relationship

  1122. with Jesus.

  1123. God is

  1124. not

  1125. heartless.

  1126. He's not

  1127. lacking

  1128. compassion.

  1129. I mean,

  1130. look at what

  1131. he's done

  1132. to save

  1133. us.

  1134. He has

  1135. sent

  1136. his son

  1137. down to

  1138. earth

  1139. to rescue

  1140. us.

  1141. And as

  1142. the people

  1143. made clear,

  1144. Jesus

  1145. taught in

  1146. their

  1147. streets.

  1148. They

  1149. heard his

  1150. words,

  1151. and yet

  1152. they ignored

  1153. it.

  1154. they

  1155. rejected

  1156. him while

  1157. the door

  1158. was open.

  1159. They

  1160. refused to

  1161. go through

  1162. the door

  1163. that Jesus

  1164. was putting

  1165. right before

  1166. them.

  1167. And so

  1168. those who

  1169. perish in

  1170. hell will

  1171. get what

  1172. we all

  1173. deserve.

  1174. And it

  1175. will be

  1176. right for

  1177. God to

  1178. see that

  1179. come about.

  1180. but at

  1181. the same

  1182. time it

  1183. is truly

  1184. cause for

  1185. weeping.

  1186. It is

  1187. sad

  1188. that many

  1189. because they

  1190. reject Jesus

  1191. will find

  1192. themselves in

  1193. that place.

  1194. For those

  1195. of us who

  1196. have entered

  1197. through the

  1198. narrow door,

  1199. this should

  1200. motivate us

  1201. to continue

  1202. pleading with

  1203. the people

  1204. around us

  1205. who have

  1206. not yet

  1207. entered.

  1208. We need

  1209. to keep

  1210. telling people,

  1211. look to

  1212. Jesus,

  1213. listen to

  1214. him,

  1215. make every

  1216. effort to

  1217. come to

  1218. him and

  1219. be saved.

  1220. It doesn't

  1221. matter whether

  1222. that message

  1223. is unpopular,

  1224. it's the

  1225. truth.

  1226. I mentioned

  1227. earlier that

  1228. Jesus sort of

  1229. changes the

  1230. question.

  1231. the question

  1232. was,

  1233. are only

  1234. a few

  1235. people

  1236. going to

  1237. be

  1238. saved?

  1239. But

  1240. Jesus

  1241. essentially

  1242. in the way

  1243. he answers

  1244. it says,

  1245. don't worry

  1246. about the

  1247. number.

  1248. The question

  1249. is,

  1250. are you

  1251. saved?

  1252. Have you

  1253. entered

  1254. through the

  1255. narrow door?

  1256. Will you

  1257. be one of

  1258. those who

  1259. come from

  1260. all over

  1261. and take

  1262. your seat

  1263. at the

  1264. feast

  1265. in the

  1266. kingdom

  1267. of God?

  1268. And if

  1269. you have

  1270. any doubt

  1271. about that,

  1272. don't take

  1273. time,

  1274. don't delay

  1275. on this,

  1276. fight to

  1277. get through

  1278. that door

  1279. before it's

  1280. closed.

  1281. Because one

  1282. day the

  1283. door will

  1284. be shut

  1285. and it

  1286. will be

  1287. too late.

  1288. we're

  1289. going to

  1290. take some

  1291. time now

  1292. to partake

  1293. of the

  1294. Lord's

  1295. table.

  1296. And if

  1297. you have

  1298. entered

  1299. through

  1300. that

  1301. door,

  1302. this

  1303. table is

  1304. for you.

  1305. This is

  1306. what we

  1307. do

  1308. together

  1309. to remind

  1310. ourselves

  1311. of what

  1312. Christ

  1313. Jesus did

  1314. for us

  1315. so that

  1316. we could

  1317. get

  1318. through.

  1319. He

  1320. suffered.

  1321. He

  1322. died.

  1323. He

  1324. made

  1325. atonement

  1326. for our

  1327. sins

  1328. by his

  1329. blood

  1330. so that

  1331. we could

  1332. be saved.

  1333. That's

  1334. what the

  1335. bread

  1336. and the

  1337. cup

  1338. point to.

  1339. And if

  1340. you've

  1341. entered

  1342. through the

  1343. narrow

  1344. door,

  1345. I want

  1346. to just

  1347. invite you

  1348. to join

  1349. with us,

  1350. eat and

  1351. drink with

  1352. us as

  1353. we remember

  1354. what Jesus

  1355. has done

  1356. for us.

  1357. These are

  1358. moments to

  1359. give thanks

  1360. to God

  1361. and to

  1362. praise

  1363. him for

  1364. his

  1365. gift,

  1366. for the

  1367. grace of

  1368. salvation.

  1369. But maybe

  1370. you're here

  1371. and you

  1372. know that

  1373. you haven't

  1374. entered

  1375. through this

  1376. door yet.

  1377. Right now

  1378. is another

  1379. opportunity

  1380. to do

  1381. so.

  1382. In these

  1383. next moments

  1384. of quiet,

  1385. I want to

  1386. urge you

  1387. to pray,

  1388. to talk

  1389. to God,

  1390. to confess

  1391. your sins

  1392. to him,

  1393. to humble

  1394. yourself before

  1395. him and

  1396. repent.

  1397. Ask for

  1398. his

  1399. forgiveness

  1400. and put

  1401. your trust

  1402. in him.

  1403. And if

  1404. that's

  1405. something that

  1406. you do

  1407. in these

  1408. next minutes,

  1409. then you're

  1410. welcome to

  1411. partake of

  1412. this table.

  1413. We're going

  1414. to have a few

  1415. minutes of

  1416. quiet prayer

  1417. now,

  1418. and then

  1419. the elements

  1420. will be

  1421. served.

  1422. Just encourage

  1423. you to hang

  1424. on to them

  1425. until everybody

  1426. who wishes

  1427. to partake

  1428. has received,

  1429. and then

  1430. we'll give

  1431. thanks and

  1432. we'll eat

  1433. and drink

  1434. together.

  1435. Let's pray.

  1436. Lord Jesus,

  1437. it's amazing

  1438. that you

  1439. would come

  1440. down from

  1441. heaven to

  1442. this earth

  1443. and walk

  1444. among us,

  1445. walk through

  1446. our streets,

  1447. and then

  1448. give up

  1449. your life

  1450. and die

  1451. for us,

  1452. suffer and

  1453. die for us,

  1454. taking the

  1455. punishment we

  1456. deserve,

  1457. even though

  1458. you had

  1459. done nothing

  1460. wrong.

  1461. We want

  1462. to say

  1463. thank you.

  1464. Thank you

  1465. for your

  1466. forgiveness,

  1467. that we

  1468. don't have

  1469. to live

  1470. with the

  1471. guilt of

  1472. all the

  1473. things that

  1474. we have

  1475. done wrong

  1476. in the

  1477. past,

  1478. whether

  1479. in our

  1480. minds

  1481. big or

  1482. small,

  1483. even for

  1484. the things

  1485. we think

  1486. are little

  1487. and insignificant,

  1488. the angry

  1489. outburst at

  1490. someone,

  1491. Lord Jesus,

  1492. you have

  1493. died to

  1494. atone for

  1495. that too.

  1496. And so we

  1497. just praise

  1498. you.

  1499. We're so

  1500. grateful for

  1501. you.

  1502. We eat

  1503. and we

  1504. drink in

  1505. remembrance

  1506. of you.

  1507. Amen.
