  1. And so, Father, as we look into the mirror of your word and we read that you say of us that we are new creations in Christ Jesus, we know you're not lying.

  2. We know that this is true.

  3. This is who we are now.

  4. And so, Father, oh, the God who it's impossible to lie.

  5. God, would you remind us that you have created us in your likeness, in true righteousness and holiness, and now we're to put away falsehood.

  6. And now we are to speak the truth to one another.

  7. God, I do pray that you would unite us as a church and are being honest and truthful with one another.

  8. We ask this in the name of Jesus.

  9. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. Now, I'm not sure if what I'm about to say is a confession.

  12. It may very well be that.

  13. I have owned some ratty, nasty, old t-shirts that I have become sentimentally attached to.

  14. Anybody else?

  15. Yes, I see that hand.

  16. I see that hand.

  17. Come on down.

  18. No, just kidding.

  19. And my dear wife will see me handling one of these delicate t-shirts because they have been through the ringer.

  20. And I'll be holding this t-shirt like a newborn baby to put into my drawer.

  21. And what she'll be doing is something like this.

  22. No way.

  23. No way.

  24. No way.

  25. No way.

  26. No way.

  27. No way.

  28. No way.

  29. No way.

  30. That's got to go.

  31. And sometimes I agree.

  32. And that t-shirt becomes rags.

  33. And other times I just have to say, I'm not ready.

  34. Well, this morning we're going to have to rid ourselves of an old and nasty t-shirt called falsehood.

  35. And we're going to have to put on a new clean and just wonderful t-shirt called truthfulness.

  36. Honesty.

  37. And what you need to know off the bat is that that t-shirt smells like Jesus.

  38. If you would open up your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  39. We're going to be focusing on one verse this morning, verse 25.

  40. But we're going to start with a run-up in verse 17.

  41. So let's read verses 17 and we're going to read through verse 25.

  42. The Apostle Paul says this.

  43. This is God's word.

  44. The God in whom it is impossible to lie.

  45. Now this I say and testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds.

  46. They are darkened in their understanding.

  47. Alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to their hardness of heart.

  48. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality.

  49. Greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

  50. But that's not the way you learned Christ.

  51. Assuming that you have heard about Him and were taught in Him as the truth is in Jesus.

  52. To put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires.

  53. And to be renewed in the spirit of your minds.

  54. And to put on the new self created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

  55. Verse 25.

  56. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor.

  57. For we are members.

  58. We are members one of another.

  59. Our speech matters to God.

  60. What we say makes a difference.

  61. Our words have an effect.

  62. That's God's design.

  63. And as Christians, those who have been made new by God,

  64. our words are to have a particular kind of effect.

  65. We are to rid ourselves of lying, falsehood.

  66. And we must speak truthfully to one another.

  67. And that truth speaking has an intended effect.

  68. It builds the body.

  69. I've been saying for some time now,

  70. who you are determines how you live.

  71. And what we're going to see this morning is,

  72. who you are determines what you say.

  73. How you speak.

  74. And so this morning, three moves to help you see what God means

  75. and to bring it to bear in our lives.

  76. First, we're going to start in front of the mirror.

  77. And we're going to start in front of the mirror.

  78. And from the mirror, we're going to move to the closet.

  79. And from the closet, we're going to go to the church.

  80. So mirror, closet, church.

  81. I hope it all makes sense.

  82. From the mirror.

  83. We all have morning routines, don't we?

  84. And I'm guessing at some point in your morning routine,

  85. you take a look at yourself in the mirror.

  86. Now, I'm sure that some of us,

  87. in this morning glance in the mirror,

  88. you walk by the mirror and you are like,

  89. man, you are stunning.

  90. I can't believe you look so good.

  91. But the most of us,

  92. we wake up and we go and look in the mirror

  93. and it's more like damage control.

  94. For example,

  95. teenagers,

  96. you wake up wondering,

  97. is there a zit on my chin?

  98. And your greatest fear is to see Mount Fuji

  99. on your chin that morning.

  100. Is it not?

  101. Totally.

  102. Brothers,

  103. those of us who are getting on in the years,

  104. we walk in and look in the mirror

  105. and we pull back our hair

  106. and we say,

  107. has my forehead moved to a five head?

  108. Or a six head?

  109. Or a seven head?

  110. I have a three head.

  111. Ladies,

  112. you're looking at your eyes

  113. and the bags under your eyes

  114. and you're saying,

  115. that is like pocketbook full,

  116. kind of size.

  117. That's kind of like Harley Davidson

  118. writing pouch size bags under my eyes.

  119. So we go and we look

  120. and it's damage control, right?

  121. And we're looking at the mirror

  122. because the mirror doesn't lie.

  123. It doesn't.

  124. Did you know there's another kind of mirror

  125. that you can look at in every morning?

  126. James talks about it as

  127. the law of liberty,

  128. God's word.

  129. Every morning,

  130. we can go to the mirror

  131. of God's word

  132. and it doesn't lie.

  133. It shows you

  134. who you really are.

  135. Your true self.

  136. This morning,

  137. we've got to remind ourselves

  138. who we really are.

  139. We've got to look at the mirror

  140. of God's word,

  141. Ephesians 4, 17 through 24,

  142. and we've got to remind ourselves

  143. who we are.

  144. It's like God uses this passage

  145. and He puts it in front of you

  146. and He says,

  147. Daughter, son,

  148. this is who you are now.

  149. You're a new creation

  150. in Christ Jesus.

  151. Don't forget that.

  152. Remember that.

  153. Renew your mind

  154. on this reality.

  155. I've brought this about in you.

  156. You're not what you used to be.

  157. In fact,

  158. the first half of Ephesians,

  159. we learn that God

  160. has eternally loved us.

  161. That God has radically changed us.

  162. That He's intentionally knit us

  163. to a body of believers.

  164. We belong now.

  165. It's who we are now.

  166. And you can sum up all this

  167. by saying this.

  168. We are new creations

  169. in Christ Jesus.

  170. We're not what we used to be.

  171. The old is gone.

  172. The new has come.

  173. We have a new nature.

  174. This is who you are now.

  175. Your former manner of life,

  176. which was the outworking

  177. of your old self,

  178. is no more.

  179. And so verses 17 through 19,

  180. we are reminded of what we used to be.

  181. That's not who you are anymore.

  182. And so now, Christian,

  183. you're no longer futile

  184. in your thinking.

  185. The substance of your thinking

  186. has to do with real truth in Jesus.

  187. You're no longer darkened

  188. in your understanding.

  189. The Holy Spirit's flipped the lights on.

  190. You're no longer alienated

  191. from the life of God.

  192. No, God has reconciled you

  193. to Himself through Christ,

  194. and now you have new life

  195. in Christ.

  196. You're no longer ignorant.

  197. Lights on.

  198. You see truth for what it is.

  199. You see Jesus for who He is now.

  200. Fully God, fully man.

  201. You understand what He's done

  202. on the cross.

  203. You understand what He's doing now,

  204. and you understand that one day

  205. He's coming back.

  206. He's going to make all things right.

  207. You're no longer

  208. the owner of a hardened heart.

  209. God has radically changed you.

  210. Ezekiel 36 is true of you, Christian.

  211. God pulled out your stony heart,

  212. and He stuck back in

  213. a fleshy heart,

  214. a soft heart,

  215. a heart that beats for God,

  216. new affections for Him.

  217. Now, this doesn't mean

  218. you have no longer desires,

  219. sinful desires,

  220. but what it does mean

  221. is now you have

  222. a new set of desires,

  223. a desire to live for God.

  224. Your old self is history.

  225. Your new self

  226. is the present reality.

  227. The old man is gone.

  228. The new man has come.

  229. Last week,

  230. I quoted from The Help

  231. and learned that it's not Abilene,

  232. but Abilene.

  233. Remember what she said?

  234. You is kind.

  235. You is smart.

  236. You is important.

  237. Christian,

  238. you are God's.

  239. You are alive.

  240. And you are holy.

  241. Created in the likeness of God.

  242. Think Jesus.

  243. Created in the likeness of God

  244. in true righteousness

  245. and holiness.

  246. You are the real thing,

  247. brother and sister in Christ.

  248. God's wrought a real work in you.

  249. And He has a new way

  250. for us to live now.

  251. In verses 22 through 24,

  252. Paul uses this language

  253. to put off and to put on.

  254. He's talking about clothing,

  255. believe it or not.

  256. He's saying,

  257. hey, the Christian life

  258. is like putting on new clothes

  259. every day of your life.

  260. You're putting on clothes

  261. that adorn the gospel.

  262. You're putting on clothes

  263. that look and smell like Jesus.

  264. That's who you are now.

  265. All this other stuff is gone.

  266. You don't put that on anymore.

  267. So we are to put off

  268. our old selfish ways

  269. that sprang from a hardened heart.

  270. That's gone.

  271. And what we're to do now is

  272. we're to put on new Christ-ish ways

  273. that spring from a heart

  274. that has been made new

  275. by God Himself.

  276. And here's what this means.

  277. We need to look at ourselves

  278. in the mirror of God's Word

  279. again and again and again.

  280. We forget who we are.

  281. We forget what God has done.

  282. We've got to remember

  283. God's speaking to us.

  284. You is mine.

  285. You is alive.

  286. You is holy.

  287. You is Christ-like.

  288. So we've got to glance

  289. in the mirror here.

  290. We've been reminded of who we are

  291. from verses 19 through 24.

  292. So now from the mirror

  293. we make our way to the closet

  294. because God has given us

  295. a brand new wardrobe in Christ.

  296. A new way to live.

  297. New clothes to wear.

  298. A new way of being.

  299. So now let's move

  300. from the mirror to the closet.

  301. Let me read Ephesians 4.25.

  302. Therefore, having put away falsehood,

  303. let each one of you speak the truth

  304. with his neighbor

  305. for we are members of one another.

  306. And so what lies before us

  307. in Ephesians 4.25 through 5.2

  308. is a wardrobe

  309. of things that are pleasing to God.

  310. Things that adorn the gospel.

  311. Things that God wants us

  312. to put on over and over again.

  313. Things that God wants us

  314. to characterize us.

  315. But you know what?

  316. First I want to notice.

  317. Did you notice the word

  318. therefore in verse 25?

  319. Tell me if you know this song.

  320. Conjunction, junction,

  321. what's your function?

  322. Hooking up words,

  323. phrases, and clauses.

  324. Anybody know that one?

  325. Sing with me.

  326. Conjunction, junction,

  327. what's your function?

  328. Okay, a conjunction

  329. makes connections.

  330. The word therefore

  331. is making a connection.

  332. The Apostle Paul

  333. is moving from

  334. our new nature in Christ

  335. to our new practice in Christ.

  336. That's what the therefore

  337. is there for.

  338. He's making a connection

  339. between who we are

  340. and how we are to live.

  341. And so we're moving

  342. from who we are nature

  343. to our practice.

  344. And in verse 25,

  345. Paul is making this

  346. specific connection

  347. between who we are in Christ

  348. and what we say.

  349. How we speak.

  350. What comes out of our mouth.

  351. Therefore,

  352. having put away falsehood,

  353. let each one of you

  354. speak the truth

  355. with his neighbor.

  356. So God has purchased us

  357. a whole new wardrobe.

  358. So imagine,

  359. you open up the door

  360. of your new

  361. Christian clothes closet.

  362. You're standing in front

  363. of this new wardrobe

  364. that God,

  365. your Father,

  366. has purchased for you

  367. with the blood of Jesus.

  368. Now hanging on that closet rod

  369. are a variety

  370. of righteous

  371. and holy clothes.

  372. And we're to be putting

  373. these on every day.

  374. This is what's to be true

  375. of us day after day.

  376. Now if you get real close

  377. to these vestments

  378. hanging on this closet rod

  379. and you get real close

  380. and you're like,

  381. take a deep smell,

  382. you're going to smell Jesus.

  383. This is Christ-like behavior.

  384. This is what he's purchased us for.

  385. To be like him.

  386. And so,

  387. today we're going to look

  388. at true speech

  389. in verse 25.

  390. Next week we're going

  391. to look at anger.

  392. How not to sin

  393. in your anger

  394. and to be Christ-like.

  395. Then we're going to move on

  396. to honest work

  397. and then gracious speech

  398. and then what it looks like

  399. to have a posture

  400. of pleasing God

  401. and not grieving God.

  402. And then what it looks like

  403. to live at peace

  404. with one another

  405. just like Christ did

  406. with us.

  407. And of course we'll wrap up

  408. by looking at what it means

  409. to walk in love

  410. with one another.

  411. These are Christ-like clothes.

  412. It's quite the wardrobe.

  413. And for us who are dead in sin

  414. and now alive in Christ,

  415. it's time to get dressed.

  416. It's time to put

  417. the right stuff on.

  418. It's time to live our lives

  419. in a way that's pleasing to God.

  420. And so this morning,

  421. like I said,

  422. we're going to focus

  423. on verse 25.

  424. Put off falsehood.

  425. Speak the truth

  426. with his neighbor.

  427. Now, back to the closet.

  428. As you're looking

  429. at these lovely clothes,

  430. freshly purchased,

  431. you noticed

  432. balled up in the corner

  433. on the ground

  434. what appears to be

  435. some kind of

  436. old T-shirt.

  437. And of course,

  438. you do

  439. what any other human being does

  440. when they find

  441. a balled up T-shirt

  442. in the corner of a closet.

  443. What do you do?

  444. You give it the sniff test.

  445. What does this smell like?

  446. And what you find

  447. is that this

  448. T-shirt

  449. reeks.

  450. It stinks.

  451. It's putrid.

  452. And yet,

  453. at the same time,

  454. this T-shirt

  455. is strangely familiar.

  456. You've worn

  457. this T-shirt

  458. quite a bit.

  459. It's a well-worn

  460. T-shirt.

  461. There's a lot of

  462. memories in it.

  463. In fact,

  464. to be honest,

  465. you would say

  466. there's a little bit

  467. of a draw.

  468. Now,

  469. if you were to put

  470. this T-shirt back on,

  471. you'd be tempted

  472. to fall back

  473. into a former

  474. way of life.

  475. This T-shirt

  476. smells like

  477. falsehood.

  478. And since

  479. becoming a Christian,

  480. you can smell

  481. that rot.

  482. You usually can smell

  483. it before you see it.

  484. It smells of your

  485. former way of life,

  486. living in a web

  487. of lies.

  488. Lies about reality

  489. when we are ignorant

  490. of God.

  491. Lies about ourselves,

  492. myself,

  493. what I thought

  494. about myself

  495. before God

  496. lit me up

  497. with the truth

  498. of Jesus.

  499. Thinking more

  500. highly of myself.

  501. Maybe you're thinking

  502. more lowly of yourself.

  503. Lies about other people.

  504. Imputing motives.

  505. Thinking things

  506. about them.

  507. Lying was

  508. a way of life.

  509. It permeated

  510. our speech.

  511. Now,

  512. this particular

  513. T-shirt

  514. that you have

  515. just sniffed

  516. and unballed,

  517. it's all wrinkled

  518. and there is

  519. a word on the front

  520. of it.

  521. Big and bold.

  522. Spinster!

  523. That's the name.

  524. Spinster.

  525. This was our

  526. former manner

  527. of life.

  528. And it's been

  529. put off.

  530. What do spinsters

  531. do?

  532. They spin the reality

  533. of a situation

  534. to suit their

  535. selfish purposes.

  536. That's what spinsters

  537. do.

  538. And that was

  539. our former

  540. modus operandi,

  541. our former

  542. MO.

  543. That's the way

  544. we used to live.

  545. Now,

  546. the Greek word

  547. translated

  548. falsehood

  549. is a Greek word

  550. that we get

  551. the word

  552. pseudo from.

  553. You know,

  554. like pseudo self,

  555. false self,

  556. pseudo intellectual,

  557. pseudo science,

  558. and it literally

  559. means

  560. to lie.

  561. To intentionally

  562. distort

  563. the truth

  564. of a situation.

  565. And we are

  566. not to put on

  567. the spinster

  568. t-shirt

  569. t-shirt

  570. anymore.

  571. It's not

  572. who we

  573. are.

  574. Remember,

  575. God says,

  576. you is mine,

  577. you is alive,

  578. and you

  579. is holy.

  580. Created in the

  581. likeness of God

  582. in true

  583. righteousness

  584. and holiness.

  585. And it changes

  586. the way

  587. we speak.

  588. So what do you

  589. do when you find

  590. the spinster

  591. t-shirt?

  592. t-shirt?

  593. Because you find

  594. it throughout

  595. the day,

  596. don't you?

  597. You ball it up

  598. and you throw

  599. it out.

  600. It's not who

  601. you are anymore.

  602. It's not who

  603. we are anymore

  604. because

  605. we've been born

  606. of the truth.

  607. We've come to

  608. see that the

  609. truth is in

  610. Christ Jesus.

  611. we live in

  612. reality now.

  613. A while back,

  614. a friend of

  615. mine was

  616. trying to help

  617. me with the

  618. colors of my

  619. wardrobe.

  620. And this

  621. person was

  622. very graciously

  623. helping me to

  624. see that certain

  625. colors weren't

  626. becoming of me.

  627. Certain colors

  628. didn't work

  629. for me.

  630. Now,

  631. I know a

  632. mix of

  633. metaphors,

  634. but brother

  635. and sister

  636. in Christ,

  637. lying is

  638. just not

  639. your color.

  640. It's not

  641. who you are

  642. anymore.

  643. It's not

  644. true of you

  645. anymore.

  646. Now,

  647. the fact of

  648. the matter

  649. is that we

  650. all are

  651. tempted to

  652. spin things,

  653. aren't we?

  654. To lie

  655. still.

  656. Even having

  657. been made

  658. new,

  659. we are still

  660. tempted to

  661. put on the

  662. spinster t-shirt.

  663. So what do

  664. you do when

  665. you're tempted?

  666. Well,

  667. you start

  668. by renewing

  669. your mind

  670. on what's

  671. true.

  672. Remind

  673. yourself of

  674. who you

  675. are.

  676. I don't

  677. do this

  678. anymore because

  679. it's not

  680. my color

  681. anymore.

  682. It's not

  683. my style.

  684. I've been

  685. changed.

  686. And Christ

  687. who's changed

  688. me changes

  689. the way I

  690. am to

  691. speak.

  692. Your God

  693. has given

  694. you a new

  695. wardrobe to

  696. put on.

  697. And so we

  698. fight lies

  699. with truth.

  700. We are to

  701. put on a

  702. new t-shirt.

  703. So having

  704. rejected our

  705. former way

  706. of living,

  707. spinning the

  708. truth for

  709. selfish purposes,

  710. we are to

  711. put on a

  712. new t-shirt.

  713. So hanging

  714. in the closet

  715. is a clear

  716. and crisp

  717. bright yellow

  718. t-shirt.

  719. You pull

  720. it out.

  721. And across

  722. the front

  723. it says in

  724. three big

  725. words,

  726. keeping it

  727. real.

  728. And you

  729. flip it

  730. over and

  731. there's one

  732. of those big

  733. circles with

  734. the cross

  735. through it.

  736. It's kind

  737. of like say

  738. no to

  739. spin.

  740. That's on

  741. the back.

  742. Keeping it

  743. real.

  744. Speaking the

  745. truth.

  746. Living in

  747. reality.

  748. Being honest

  749. with one

  750. another.

  751. Genuine with

  752. one another.

  753. That's the

  754. new t-shirt.

  755. And when we

  756. put this

  757. t-shirt on,

  758. we're putting

  759. on a new

  760. way of

  761. Christ-like

  762. living.

  763. A Christ-like

  764. speech.

  765. Speech marked

  766. by honesty.

  767. Because we've

  768. come to know

  769. the truth in

  770. Jesus, and

  771. because he

  772. saved us to

  773. be truly

  774. righteous and

  775. holy, we

  776. are to speak

  777. truthfully to

  778. one another.

  779. Honestly.

  780. We're to speak

  781. truthfully about

  782. God to one

  783. another.

  784. We're to speak

  785. truthfully about

  786. ourselves to

  787. each other.

  788. We're to

  789. represent

  790. ourselves accurately.

  791. We're to

  792. speak truthfully

  793. of one

  794. another to

  795. each other.

  796. We're not

  797. to gossip.

  798. We are not

  799. to hide

  800. reality.

  801. We're not

  802. to distort

  803. the truth.

  804. We are not

  805. to deny

  806. what is

  807. true.

  808. That's

  809. spinster

  810. living.

  811. Rather,

  812. it is

  813. pleasing to

  814. God to

  815. speak truthfully

  816. to one

  817. another because

  818. it's impossible

  819. for God to

  820. lie.

  821. Titus 1-2,

  822. God doesn't

  823. lie.

  824. And we

  825. have been

  826. made in

  827. His likeness

  828. now.

  829. Now, I

  830. can imagine

  831. a situation

  832. in which

  833. you find

  834. yourself in

  835. a web of

  836. lies.

  837. You're a

  838. Christian,

  839. and you've

  840. been spinning

  841. the truth

  842. out of

  843. fear,

  844. out of

  845. shame,

  846. out of

  847. anger,

  848. out of

  849. disgust.

  850. what do

  851. you do?

  852. Well, you

  853. first remember

  854. who you

  855. are,

  856. that you

  857. belong to

  858. Jesus now,

  859. and then

  860. you turn

  861. from your

  862. sin.

  863. It's called

  864. repenting.

  865. These lies

  866. are wrong.

  867. It's not

  868. true of me,

  869. of who God

  870. called me to

  871. be.

  872. I must

  873. change now.

  874. I must

  875. turn away

  876. from these

  877. lies.

  878. That's

  879. repentance.

  880. And the

  881. outworking of

  882. repentance

  883. shows up

  884. in a kind

  885. of truth

  886. speech.

  887. It's called

  888. confession.

  889. Confession to

  890. God,

  891. and confession

  892. to those you

  893. have sinned

  894. against.

  895. We're simply

  896. agreeing with

  897. God that,

  898. yes,

  899. what I've been

  900. doing here is

  901. grievous in

  902. your sight.

  903. And then we

  904. confess to

  905. those we've

  906. lied to,

  907. those who

  908. are believing

  909. our pseudo

  910. truths.

  911. We confess

  912. it.

  913. Now,

  914. if you're a

  915. step ahead of

  916. me,

  917. you're probably

  918. doing the

  919. math.

  920. You're probably

  921. thinking,

  922. what kind of

  923. impact will

  924. this have on

  925. my relationships

  926. with these

  927. people?

  928. And so for

  929. you to take

  930. a step like

  931. this,

  932. you know you're

  933. going to grieve

  934. somebody.

  935. You know you're

  936. going to hurt

  937. somebody.

  938. You know you're

  939. going to strain

  940. a relationship.

  941. Because essentially

  942. what you're saying

  943. is,

  944. I've been lying

  945. to you.

  946. Your trust in

  947. me has been

  948. misfounded.

  949. now you at

  950. that moment

  951. are even

  952. thinking about

  953. this,

  954. you may feel

  955. isolated,

  956. right?

  957. Remember,

  958. God is saying

  959. to you,

  960. you is mine,

  961. you is

  962. alive,

  963. and you

  964. is holy.

  965. Your confession

  966. pleases me.

  967. I see you

  968. speaking the

  969. truth.

  970. In these

  971. kinds of

  972. situations,

  973. the starting

  974. point is

  975. speaking the

  976. truth about

  977. your lies.

  978. Calling a

  979. lie a lie.

  980. Calling a

  981. falsehood a

  982. falsehood.

  983. And then

  984. what?

  985. What does

  986. faith look like

  987. moving forward,

  988. right?

  989. What do you

  990. do then?

  991. What do you

  992. do then?

  993. Well,

  994. if you look

  995. back in the

  996. text,

  997. in 425,

  998. it reads,

  999. therefore,

  1000. having put

  1001. away falsehood,

  1002. let each

  1003. one of you

  1004. speak the

  1005. truth with

  1006. his neighbor.

  1007. That word

  1008. speak,

  1009. it's called

  1010. an imperative,

  1011. it's a

  1012. command.

  1013. And the

  1014. nature of

  1015. the verb

  1016. is an

  1017. ongoing

  1018. action.

  1019. We are

  1020. to continually

  1021. speak the

  1022. truth to

  1023. one another.

  1024. And so what

  1025. it looks like

  1026. moving forward

  1027. is we

  1028. continually

  1029. remember who

  1030. we are,

  1031. and we

  1032. continually

  1033. speak the

  1034. truth to

  1035. one another.

  1036. We are

  1037. to live

  1038. in reality

  1039. with each

  1040. other.

  1041. It's

  1042. righteous

  1043. and holy

  1044. living.

  1045. Now,

  1046. if you've

  1047. strained a

  1048. relationship

  1049. because of

  1050. your lies,

  1051. the way to

  1052. repair and

  1053. restore the

  1054. loss of

  1055. trust is to

  1056. speak truthfully

  1057. to that

  1058. person.

  1059. To say

  1060. what you

  1061. mean,

  1062. do what you

  1063. say,

  1064. to follow

  1065. through,

  1066. to speak

  1067. honestly.

  1068. And what

  1069. will take

  1070. place as

  1071. you're trusting

  1072. God here

  1073. is that

  1074. God will

  1075. gradually

  1076. regain the

  1077. trust.

  1078. He'll work

  1079. a work of

  1080. repair of

  1081. the one that

  1082. you have

  1083. deceived and

  1084. grieved.

  1085. Now,

  1086. let's say

  1087. you've been

  1088. the one

  1089. deceived,

  1090. the one

  1091. lied to.

  1092. You,

  1093. too,

  1094. need to

  1095. remember who

  1096. you are.

  1097. you are a

  1098. new creation.

  1099. And so

  1100. you read in

  1101. verse 27,

  1102. I think,

  1103. 26,

  1104. be angry

  1105. and do not

  1106. sin.

  1107. You read in

  1108. verse 31,

  1109. guard your

  1110. heart,

  1111. don't be

  1112. bitter.

  1113. You look at

  1114. verse 32

  1115. and you read

  1116. forgive as

  1117. God in

  1118. Christ Jesus

  1119. forgave you,

  1120. walk in

  1121. love.

  1122. It's tall

  1123. order when

  1124. you've been

  1125. sinned against

  1126. this way,

  1127. isn't it?

  1128. Can I

  1129. just,

  1130. can I

  1131. just say

  1132. something

  1133. here?

  1134. We've got

  1135. to realize

  1136. that when

  1137. we sin

  1138. this way

  1139. against one

  1140. another,

  1141. though we

  1142. are able

  1143. to forgive

  1144. each other

  1145. when this

  1146. happens,

  1147. there's still

  1148. been a

  1149. breach of

  1150. trust.

  1151. And so

  1152. we can't

  1153. be thinking

  1154. that since

  1155. I forgive

  1156. you,

  1157. all is

  1158. well.

  1159. It's

  1160. not.

  1161. There needs

  1162. to be a

  1163. repairing

  1164. of trust

  1165. in the

  1166. relationship.

  1167. And so

  1168. if someone's

  1169. been lying

  1170. to you

  1171. and they

  1172. confess that

  1173. to you,

  1174. please,

  1175. by all

  1176. means,

  1177. forgive them

  1178. as God

  1179. and Christ

  1180. has forgiven

  1181. you.

  1182. But you're

  1183. going to be

  1184. honest with

  1185. them.

  1186. You're going

  1187. to need to

  1188. say something

  1189. like this.

  1190. Now,

  1191. I'm glad to

  1192. forgive you

  1193. and I want

  1194. to trust you,

  1195. but it's going

  1196. to take some

  1197. time to trust

  1198. you fully

  1199. again.

  1200. as you

  1201. follow through

  1202. with what

  1203. you say.

  1204. As you

  1205. walk the

  1206. talk and

  1207. talk the

  1208. walk,

  1209. I will

  1210. purpose to

  1211. trust you

  1212. more and

  1213. more.

  1214. We're

  1215. living in

  1216. reality,

  1217. aren't we?

  1218. Now,

  1219. if you are

  1220. stuck in

  1221. either of

  1222. these situations,

  1223. the one who's

  1224. been lying or

  1225. the one who's

  1226. been lied to

  1227. and you just

  1228. don't feel like

  1229. you know where

  1230. to go right

  1231. now,

  1232. well,

  1233. God has

  1234. grace for

  1235. you.

  1236. Keep it

  1237. real.

  1238. Be honest

  1239. and ask

  1240. for help.

  1241. Your elders,

  1242. we're glad to

  1243. help you with

  1244. this.

  1245. There are

  1246. mature Christians

  1247. in this church

  1248. that can help

  1249. you with this.

  1250. Go find

  1251. help.

  1252. The church

  1253. has a role

  1254. to help,

  1255. which brings

  1256. us to the

  1257. last point.

  1258. So we've

  1259. looked at the

  1260. mirror,

  1261. we've moved

  1262. to the closet,

  1263. now let's

  1264. talk about

  1265. the church.

  1266. Did you

  1267. notice

  1268. in verse

  1269. 25

  1270. that Paul

  1271. provides another

  1272. reason to

  1273. speak truthfully?

  1274. He says

  1275. this,

  1276. therefore,

  1277. having put

  1278. away falsehood,

  1279. let each

  1280. one of you

  1281. speak the

  1282. truth and

  1283. speak the

  1284. truth with

  1285. his neighbor,

  1286. for we are

  1287. members one

  1288. of another.

  1289. For we are

  1290. members one

  1291. of another.

  1292. What Paul

  1293. is doing

  1294. here,

  1295. what God

  1296. is doing

  1297. is reminding

  1298. us that we

  1299. are a body.

  1300. We have

  1301. been intentionally

  1302. knit together

  1303. by God.

  1304. Each of

  1305. us are

  1306. individual

  1307. members of

  1308. the body

  1309. of Christ

  1310. and interdependent

  1311. organism with

  1312. Christ Jesus

  1313. as our

  1314. head.

  1315. That's what

  1316. Paul is

  1317. saying.

  1318. And he's

  1319. saying that

  1320. the health

  1321. of our

  1322. body depends

  1323. upon our

  1324. speaking the

  1325. truth to

  1326. each other.

  1327. Look at

  1328. Ephesians 4

  1329. 15.

  1330. Rather,

  1331. speaking the

  1332. truth in

  1333. love,

  1334. we are to

  1335. grow up

  1336. in every

  1337. way into

  1338. him who

  1339. is the

  1340. head,

  1341. into

  1342. Christ.

  1343. Our

  1344. speaking the

  1345. truth to

  1346. one another

  1347. builds up

  1348. the body.

  1349. It grows

  1350. the body.

  1351. And in

  1352. this text,

  1353. it's clear

  1354. that each

  1355. of us

  1356. has a

  1357. responsibility

  1358. to speak

  1359. truthfully

  1360. to each

  1361. other.

  1362. Let each

  1363. one of

  1364. you speak

  1365. the truth.

  1366. We're to

  1367. keep it real

  1368. with each

  1369. other.

  1370. We're to

  1371. be honest

  1372. with each

  1373. other.

  1374. Authentic.

  1375. that's who

  1376. God has

  1377. made us

  1378. to be.

  1379. We've been

  1380. created in

  1381. the likeness

  1382. of God.

  1383. And now

  1384. we live it

  1385. out by

  1386. speaking

  1387. truthfully.

  1388. Two chain

  1389. reactions with

  1390. two different

  1391. effects in a

  1392. church.

  1393. You ready?

  1394. Here it

  1395. goes.

  1396. Living the

  1397. old way,

  1398. the former

  1399. manner of

  1400. life.

  1401. It's like

  1402. cancer to

  1403. a body.

  1404. Here's the

  1405. chain reaction.

  1406. We forget

  1407. who we are,

  1408. we lie to

  1409. each other,

  1410. we misrepresent

  1411. ourselves to

  1412. each other,

  1413. and the

  1414. result is

  1415. mistrust

  1416. between each

  1417. other,

  1418. leading to

  1419. disunity in

  1420. the church,

  1421. which leads

  1422. to atrophy

  1423. of a church,

  1424. which leads

  1425. to a

  1426. non-believing

  1427. world looking

  1428. at us and

  1429. saying something

  1430. like,

  1431. God makes

  1432. no difference

  1433. in their

  1434. body.

  1435. Is there

  1436. a God?

  1437. That's one

  1438. chain reaction.

  1439. Here's the

  1440. second chain

  1441. reaction.

  1442. It's not

  1443. like cancer.

  1444. This is

  1445. health.

  1446. This is

  1447. goodness.

  1448. This is

  1449. God's

  1450. grace.

  1451. We remember

  1452. who we

  1453. are.

  1454. We remember

  1455. what God

  1456. has done

  1457. for us

  1458. in Christ.

  1459. We are

  1460. new

  1461. creations,

  1462. and we

  1463. purpose to

  1464. keep it

  1465. real,

  1466. to speak

  1467. truthfully

  1468. to one

  1469. another.

  1470. And in

  1471. that truth

  1472. speaking,

  1473. even when

  1474. sometimes it's

  1475. hard to say

  1476. something to

  1477. someone,

  1478. when we're

  1479. being honest,

  1480. it ends up

  1481. building trust.

  1482. And with

  1483. that trust

  1484. comes unity,

  1485. and with

  1486. that unity

  1487. comes growth,

  1488. and with

  1489. that growth

  1490. comes God's

  1491. glory.

  1492. People are

  1493. saying,

  1494. what's going

  1495. on there?

  1496. And we get

  1497. to say,

  1498. God's at work.

  1499. Two ways to be

  1500. as a church.

  1501. I vote for

  1502. the latter.

  1503. Let's speak

  1504. the truth to

  1505. each other,

  1506. because we love

  1507. each other.

  1508. Imagine this.

  1509. Christ the

  1510. King Church,

  1511. wearing our

  1512. bright yellow

  1513. keep it real,

  1514. say no to

  1515. spinning t-shirts,

  1516. spread out

  1517. throughout the

  1518. week,

  1519. throughout the

  1520. city,

  1521. throughout the

  1522. region,

  1523. in workplaces,

  1524. in schools.

  1525. We're speaking

  1526. the truth

  1527. wherever we

  1528. are.

  1529. It's how we

  1530. do it.

  1531. And sometimes

  1532. we're going to

  1533. catch some heat

  1534. for that.

  1535. But it's the

  1536. right thing to

  1537. do.

  1538. It's who we

  1539. are now.

  1540. Now imagine

  1541. this.

  1542. When we

  1543. gather as a

  1544. church,

  1545. with our

  1546. keeping it

  1547. real t-shirts

  1548. on,

  1549. on a Sunday

  1550. morning,

  1551. at Wednesday

  1552. night Bible

  1553. studies,

  1554. when we come

  1555. together in

  1556. small groups,

  1557. we're purposing

  1558. to speak

  1559. honestly,

  1560. live honestly

  1561. with each

  1562. other,

  1563. there's some

  1564. good that's

  1565. going to

  1566. happen there.

  1567. God's going

  1568. to be with

  1569. us.

  1570. He's going

  1571. to grow

  1572. us.

  1573. He's going

  1574. to get a

  1575. glory unique

  1576. to Him.

  1577. See,

  1578. what's at

  1579. stake here

  1580. is our

  1581. unity and

  1582. our health

  1583. as a

  1584. church,

  1585. and ultimately

  1586. God's

  1587. glory,

  1588. witness to

  1589. His name.

  1590. So we've

  1591. looked at

  1592. the mirror,

  1593. we've checked

  1594. out our new

  1595. wardrobe in

  1596. the closet,

  1597. and we've

  1598. seen how

  1599. Paul lands

  1600. that in the

  1601. church.

  1602. Let me

  1603. pray for

  1604. us,

  1605. and we'll

  1606. close.

  1607. God in

  1608. heaven,

  1609. we take

  1610. great joy

  1611. in knowing

  1612. that You

  1613. are a

  1614. God who

  1615. is a

  1616. truthful

  1617. God,

  1618. and You're

  1619. calling us

  1620. to be

  1621. truthful as

  1622. well.

  1623. God,

  1624. would You

  1625. make us

  1626. a body

  1627. that delights

  1628. and being

  1629. true,

  1630. being honest,

  1631. keeping it

  1632. real.

  1633. God,

  1634. would You

  1635. grow us

  1636. here?

  1637. Would You

  1638. help us

  1639. to put off

  1640. the old

  1641. way and

  1642. to live

  1643. in light

  1644. of who we

  1645. now are?

  1646. God,

  1647. make us a

  1648. people who

  1649. speak the

  1650. truth and

  1651. love to

  1652. one other.

  1653. In Jesus'

  1654. name,

  1655. Amen.

  1656. Amen.

  1657. Amen.

  1658. Amen.

  1659. Amen.

  1660. Amen.

  1661. Amen.

  1662. Amen.

  1663. Amen.

  1664. Amen.

  1665. Amen.

  1666. Amen.

  1667. Amen.

  1668. Amen.

  1669. Amen.

  1670. Amen.

  1671. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. Amen.

  1676. Amen.

  1677. Amen.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.
