  1. Thank you.

  2. Thank you.

  3. Thank you.

  4. Thank you.

  5. Thank you.

  6. Now, anger is essentially a response, a reaction.

  7. You see something, you don't like it, you feel offended perhaps, and you get angry.

  8. It's an intense response.

  9. To be human is to get angry.

  10. In order to make that point, let's have a show of hands.

  11. Have you been angry in the last three months?

  12. Raise your hand.

  13. I knew it.

  14. How about last three weeks?

  15. Early September.

  16. Yep, amen, me too.

  17. Last three days?

  18. Yes, I have.

  19. Close your eyes now.

  20. Last three hours?

  21. Just kidding.

  22. Just kidding.

  23. Just kidding.

  24. We get angry, don't we?

  25. We get angry.

  26. Now, you may be surprised.

  27. God does not forbid anger in the Bible.

  28. God Himself is angry.

  29. I'm going to show you that in just a little bit.

  30. But He calls us as Christians to a certain kind of anger.

  31. As Christians, who we are in Christ determines how we deal with our anger.

  32. And so if you would now open up your Bibles to Ephesians chapter 4, verses 26 and 27.

    Ephesians 4:26

  33. I'm going to read those two verses.

  34. Listen now, this is God's Word.

  35. Be angry and do not sin.

  36. Do not let the sun go down on your anger and give no opportunity to the devil.

  37. Be angry and do not sin.

  38. Do not let the sun go down on your anger and give no opportunity to the devil.

  39. The anger of our former manner of life before we became Christians was a destructive kind of anger.

  40. It was not useful.

  41. But now as new creations in Christ, our anger is to be constructive.

  42. It's to be useful.

  43. It's to be redemptive.

  44. It's to be Christ-like in true righteousness and holiness.

  45. So here's what we need to see this morning.

  46. God is calling us simply to be Christ-like in our anger.

  47. He's calling you and me to be like Jesus.

  48. And what we get angry about and how we express our anger.

  49. So God is not forbidding anger here.

  50. What He is doing though is He's calling us to a Christ-like anger.

  51. Which will mean putting off the anger of our former way of living.

  52. Our selfish anger.

  53. Reminding ourselves of who we are in Christ.

  54. And then putting on our new self with Christ-like anger.

  55. So all throughout Ephesians 4, we've seen that we're getting this new wardrobe of clothes.

  56. Last week we talked about putting off falsehood.

  57. Putting on truth.

  58. This morning we're talking about putting off a certain kind of anger.

  59. And putting on a Christ-like anger.

  60. And so to help you see that this morning, we're going to kind of bear down on these two verses.

  61. The first thing that we need to be sure of is this.

  62. We need to be sure about our relationship to God's anger.

  63. So we've got to be clear on that.

  64. The second thing that we need to be clear on is this.

  65. We need to be angry and suspicious of our anger at the same time.

  66. And then the last thing that we need to see is this.

  67. We need to be sanctifying our anger.

  68. We need to be stabilizing our anger.

  69. We need to be controlling our anger.

  70. So we'll see this come out as we walk our way through this passage.

  71. We're to be Christ-like in our anger.

  72. And so, let's be sure about our standing in relationship to God's anger.

  73. Now there's two things you need to know about God's anger.

  74. First one is this.

  75. God is angry.

  76. He is.

  77. Now, it's not that uncommon to hear someone make a statement like this.

  78. The God of the Old Testament is a God of anger and the God of the New Testament is a God of love.

  79. Has anybody heard anything like that before?

  80. It's just not true.

  81. Because the God of the Old Testament is the same God of the New Testament.

  82. Same God.

  83. In both Testaments, God reveals Himself as a God of just anger and steadfast love.

  84. Now, one of the greatest references that echoes through the pages of the Old Testament about God's anger is found in Exodus 34.

  85. Now, let me tell you what's going on here.

  86. God has just delivered His people out of Egypt, brought them to Mount Sinai.

  87. He brought Moses up onto Mount Sinai and with His very finger wrote the Ten Commandments on two tablets.

  88. They're talking.

  89. God makes aware of something.

  90. There's something off with my people right now.

  91. Moses, go down there.

  92. Moses goes down the mountain.

  93. And what does he see?

  94. His people, God's people, are worshiping a golden calf.

  95. Moses throws down the tablets.

  96. And then God wants to wipe His people out.

  97. He'll start from scratch.

  98. Moses intercedes.

  99. No, God, no.

  100. That won't look good.

  101. God relents.

  102. And then He calls Moses back up on the mountain.

  103. And He cuts out two new tablets.

  104. He's going to renew His covenant with His people.

  105. Our God is amazing.

  106. But before He does that, He says something about Himself.

  107. Exodus chapter 34.

    Exodus 34 chapter mention

  108. Verses 5 through 8.

  109. Listen to what God says.

  110. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with Moses there and proclaimed the name of the Lord.

  111. The Lord passed before Him and proclaimed,

  112. The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious,

  113. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,

  114. keeping steadfast love for thousands,

  115. forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

  116. but will by no means clear the guilty,

  117. visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children to the third and fourth generation.

  118. And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.

  119. The God of the Old Testament is a God of just anger.

  120. He's slow to anger.

  121. He's slow to anger.

  122. And full of steadfast love and faithfulness.

  123. He's a God merciful and gracious.

  124. Do you know what makes God really angry?

  125. Do you know?

  126. When the people He has created in His image,

  127. to worship Him,

  128. reject Him,

  129. in order to worship something other than Him.

  130. That's what makes God really angry.

  131. It's called idolatry.

  132. And in God's economy of things,

  133. that is a capital offense.

  134. Now think about this.

  135. God knows everything.

  136. The fancy word is,

  137. He's omniscient.

  138. He knows that which is of greatest value

  139. and worthy of highest praise.

  140. It's Himself.

  141. He knows that the best thing for us

  142. is to be in a relationship with Him.

  143. Giving Him the praise,

  144. do His name,

  145. living for Him.

  146. I mean, that's what He made us for.

  147. To be in right relationship with Him.

  148. To delight in Him.

  149. To enjoy Him.

  150. But in our sin,

  151. we've rejected Him

  152. and settling to worship junk.

  153. Now you might be thinking,

  154. you know, that idolatry stuff,

  155. that was a big problem in the Old Testament.

  156. It's not an Old Testament problem alone.

  157. It is a worship problem.

  158. It is a human problem.

  159. It's a sin problem.

  160. We all deal with it.

  161. Our nature, apart from Christ,

  162. is dead to God.

  163. And in our spiritual deadness,

  164. we seek to worship things not God.

  165. Namely, ourselves.

  166. Have you ever heard of the expression,

  167. look out for number one?

  168. You heard that before?

  169. Think of it as a worship refrain.

  170. I'm living for myself.

  171. You see,

  172. even though we are futile in our thinking,

  173. darkened in our understanding.

  174. Now this is before we became Christians.

  175. We are futile in our thinking,

  176. darkened in our understanding.

  177. We are ignorant.

  178. We are alienated from the life of God.

  179. Our hearts were hardened to Him.

  180. All that was true.

  181. Do you know what else was true?

  182. We were worshipers.

  183. And since we did not worship God,

  184. we worshiped something else,

  185. and it provoked His anger.

  186. And so in Ephesians 2, 1 through 3,

  187. we read something like this.

  188. I'll just summarize it.

  189. We were dead to God.

  190. We were deceived.

  191. We were disobedient.

  192. We were bedeviled following the prince

  193. of the power of the air.

  194. And as a result, we were damned.

  195. We were children of wrath.

  196. Under God's just wrath.

  197. And what provoked it was our idolatry.

  198. Our exchange of the Creator

  199. for the created things in our worship.

  200. Our hearts were hardened to Him.

  201. And what Romans 2, 5 says is that

  202. it stores up God's wrath against us.

  203. You know what's hard to think about?

  204. People are under God's wrath right now.

  205. We've got a beautiful day.

  206. And people are under God's wrath right now.

  207. There are people sleeping in apartments and homes

  208. all around this place,

  209. many of whom are under God's wrath right now.

  210. We're going to be watching the football game

  211. later this afternoon.

  212. How many people are going to be watching?

  213. How many under God's wrath?

  214. We like to think of John 3, 16.

  215. For God so loved the world

  216. that He gave His one and only Son

  217. that whoever believes in Him

  218. shall not perish,

  219. but have eternal life.

  220. But just 20 verses later,

  221. we read this.

  222. Whoever believes in the Son

  223. has eternal life.

  224. Whoever does not obey the Son

  225. shall not see life,

  226. but the wrath of God

  227. remains on Him.

  228. The Bible is very clear.

  229. If you've not put your trust in Jesus,

  230. God's wrath is hanging over your head.

  231. You're in danger.

  232. You're in danger.

  233. And God's wrath is a just wrath.

  234. It's a right response to idolatry.

  235. Your idolatry.

  236. You swapping Him out

  237. to worship something else.

  238. God is right in His wrath.

  239. Now for those of us who are Christians,

  240. that's who we used to be.

  241. It's not true anymore.

  242. But if you're not a Christian,

  243. you need to flee to Jesus

  244. because He will rescue you

  245. from the just wrath

  246. hanging over your head.

  247. He will bear it for you.

  248. And so the first thing

  249. I wanted you to be sure of is

  250. God is angry.

  251. Even right now.

  252. The second thing I want to remind you of

  253. as a Christian is this.

  254. He's not angry with you anymore.

  255. He's not.

  256. You can be sure

  257. that the wrath of God

  258. in all its fullness

  259. was poured out on Christ.

  260. If you haven't made Romans 8.1

  261. a verse to set in your heart,

  262. you must.

  263. There is therefore

  264. now no condemnation

  265. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  266. No more wrath.

  267. No more danger.

  268. No more fear of judgment.

  269. There is therefore now

  270. no condemnation

  271. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  272. There was a time

  273. when God's wrath

  274. was over us

  275. but no more.

  276. We believed in the Son.

  277. We have eternal life.

  278. It no longer remains over us.

  279. So now the question is

  280. where did the wrath go?

  281. Where did it go?

  282. If it's not on us,

  283. where did it go?

  284. Did God sweep it under the rug?

  285. Is God a passive-aggressive God?

  286. He just kind of packs it down

  287. for a little bit

  288. only for an explosion of rage later on?

  289. Do we have to be afraid of our God?

  290. Do we have to walk in eggshells around Him?

  291. No, no, no, no, no.

  292. Though God was just

  293. in His wrath towards us,

  294. He dealt with His anger

  295. in a just and loving way

  296. for us.

  297. Here's the Gospel.

  298. God made peace with us

  299. through the cross of Jesus Christ.

  300. God poured out all of His wrath

  301. on the head of Jesus.

  302. All of it for me on Christ.

  303. The death that Christ died,

  304. He died for you, Christian.

  305. Fully satisfying the just wrath of God.

  306. So we can say,

  307. there is therefore now

  308. no condemnation

  309. for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  310. There is no more wrath

  311. to be poured out.

  312. It's been all poured out

  313. on Jesus for you.

  314. No more wrath.

  315. Nothing's hanging now.

  316. Nothing's hanging over your head.

  317. In the cross of Christ,

  318. we see God's just wrath

  319. and steadfast love

  320. on full display.

  321. It's a glorious place.

  322. It's wonderful.

  323. Can I just tell you

  324. one more thing too?

  325. We don't have to fear

  326. God's wrath against us.

  327. God's wrath is now for us.

  328. At the end of time,

  329. when Jesus comes back,

  330. He's going to make

  331. all things right.

  332. He's going to judge everything.

  333. We have nothing to fear.

  334. His wrath is for us.

  335. In Ephesians 2, 1 through 3,

  336. we were under God's wrath.

  337. We were damned.

  338. And at the end of Ephesians 2,

  339. in 2.10,

  340. we're His workmanship.

  341. We're His delight.

  342. And the difference is Jesus.

  343. God's grace to us.

  344. We've got to be sure

  345. of our standing

  346. in relationship

  347. to God's anger.

  348. And sure of that,

  349. now let's turn

  350. to our own anger.

  351. In Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:26

  352. verses 26 and 27,

  353. there is actually four commands.

  354. The first one is

  355. to be angry.

  356. Be angry.

  357. God is not forbidding anger.

  358. He's actually commanding it.

  359. He's calling us to be angry.

  360. Now, let me just clarify

  361. something quickly.

  362. He's not commanding us

  363. to be sinful in our anger.

  364. He is commanding us

  365. to be Christ-like

  366. in our anger.

  367. Remember verses 22 through 24

  368. that just preceded this passage.

  369. We're being called

  370. to put off the selfish way

  371. of living of our former

  372. manner of life

  373. with its anger.

  374. To be renewed in our mind

  375. that we belong to Christ.

  376. That God's wrath

  377. has been paid out

  378. in full on Him.

  379. We're no longer

  380. under God's wrath now.

  381. And so now,

  382. knowing who we are

  383. in Christ,

  384. we are to put on

  385. a new kind of anger.

  386. A Christ-like anger.

  387. So this command here,

  388. to be angry,

  389. is to be angry

  390. in a way

  391. that's like Jesus.

  392. And there is a way.

  393. God is saying to us,

  394. you is mine,

  395. you is alive,

  396. you is holy,

  397. and you is to be angry

  398. the way Jesus gets angry.

  399. So we need to realize

  400. that we're being called

  401. to be angry

  402. about the right things here.

  403. But we also need to realize

  404. we've got to be suspicious

  405. of our anger.

  406. We've got to be suspicious of it.

  407. And there's two reasons why

  408. we've got to be suspicious

  409. of our anger.

  410. The first reason is

  411. our anger,

  412. even in Christ,

  413. is unstable.

  414. It's an unstable anger.

  415. The Bible describes

  416. the experience of a Christian

  417. as having a war

  418. within them.

  419. Galatians 5, 16 and 17,

  420. the desires of the flesh

  421. are opposed to the desires

  422. of the Spirit.

  423. This is happening inside of us.

  424. James 4, 1.

  425. James says,

  426. hey, why are there quarrels

  427. and fights within you?

  428. Is it not because

  429. of the passions

  430. that war inside of you?

  431. We have a mixed bag

  432. when it comes to our motives.

  433. Why we do what we do.

  434. And so,

  435. because of sin in our hearts,

  436. even though we're new creations,

  437. we've got to be suspicious

  438. of our anger.

  439. We've got to be careful

  440. from where it comes from.

  441. And so,

  442. when James,

  443. in James 1, 19 and 20,

  444. says,

  445. be slow to anger.

  446. For the anger of man

  447. cannot accomplish

  448. the righteousness of God.

  449. He's being extremely wise.

  450. He's not forbidding it.

  451. He's saying,

  452. whoa,

  453. be careful.

  454. So,

  455. anger is unstable.

  456. That's the first reason

  457. why we need to be suspicious.

  458. The second reason

  459. why we need to be suspicious

  460. is anger's impact.

  461. It can be devastating.

  462. Do you know what nuclear fission is?

  463. I study nuclear fission on the side.

  464. I study nuclear fission on the side.

  465. In my free time.

  466. Actually,

  467. nuclear fission is the splitting

  468. of one atom into two.

  469. And when that fission takes place,

  470. there is a massive release of energy.

  471. Massive.

  472. Anger is a reaction

  473. that releases a huge amount of energy,

  474. isn't it?

  475. We all can relate with that.

  476. Anger

  477. can either be destructive

  478. or constructive.

  479. Anger can either

  480. devastate

  481. or be useful.

  482. Anger can actually

  483. be redemptive.

  484. There are two kinds of angers.

  485. There's unrighteous,

  486. ungodly anger.

  487. And then there's

  488. righteous Christ-like anger.

  489. Does the name

  490. Little Boy ring a bell?

  491. Little Boy was the name

  492. of the first atomic bomb

  493. that was detonated

  494. over Hiroshima

  495. at the end of World War II.

  496. It was detonated

  497. actually above the city.

  498. And the detonation

  499. was the splitting

  500. of an atom.

  501. I think it was a uranium-235 atom.

  502. It split

  503. and there was immense chain reaction

  504. and it released

  505. a huge amount of energy

  506. and it completely

  507. devastated

  508. that city.

  509. I'm not sure

  510. if you've seen pictures

  511. of Hiroshima

  512. after that bomb was dropped.

  513. It was raised.

  514. Flattened, charred.

  515. Many died.

  516. Devastating.

  517. Anger

  518. is a reaction

  519. that can bring about

  520. bomb-like devastation

  521. to relationships.

  522. Devastating friendships.

  523. Devastating marriages.

  524. Devastating families.

  525. Devastating workplaces.

  526. Devastating churches.

  527. We've got to be suspicious of it.

  528. Devastating.

  529. This sinful kind of anger

  530. is much more devil-like

  531. than it is Christ-like.

  532. It destroys.

  533. It brings hostility.

  534. It doesn't unite.

  535. It doesn't bring about peace.

  536. Last week,

  537. we read the command

  538. to put off falsehood

  539. and speak the truth

  540. with his neighbor.

  541. We can't spin

  542. our sinful anger.

  543. anger.

  544. We can't be untruthful

  545. about our anger.

  546. We've got to be honest

  547. about it.

  548. Honest before God

  549. about it.

  550. We must confess it

  551. to one another

  552. in order to put it off.

  553. We've got to be

  554. suspicious of it.

  555. It's unstable.

  556. It's devastating.

  557. But not all

  558. nuclear fission

  559. devastates.

  560. Nuclear fission

  561. is what takes place

  562. in nuclear reactors

  563. that produce all sorts

  564. of electricity

  565. so that we can read

  566. our Bibles in the morning.

  567. It's useful.

  568. It's productive.

  569. It's still dangerous.

  570. Fission reactions

  571. still need to be stabilized,

  572. but it's useful.

  573. So God in Christ

  574. is seeking to do something

  575. in us

  576. with regard to our anger.

  577. He's seeking to purge

  578. out the old stuff

  579. that's destructive

  580. and to radically change us

  581. and transform us

  582. to get angry

  583. about the right stuff

  584. for redemptive,

  585. useful purposes.

  586. And God is really

  587. interested in doing that

  588. for the advancement

  589. of His glory

  590. and for the good

  591. of other people

  592. and it's starting

  593. with you.

  594. It's starting with me.

  595. If you're a Christian,

  596. God made you new

  597. in Christ

  598. so that you wouldn't

  599. be enslaved

  600. by your sinful anger,

  601. but you'd be able

  602. to use your anger

  603. for good.

  604. It's Christ-like.

  605. Did you know

  606. that Jesus got angry?

  607. Let me just point you

  608. to two places

  609. really quick.

  610. In Mark chapter 3,

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  611. Jesus walks into

  612. a synagogue

  613. and there was a man

  614. with a withered hand

  615. in the synagogue

  616. and what was taking place

  617. when Jesus was teaching

  618. was this.

  619. He was healing people

  620. and He was healing people

  621. on the Sabbath

  622. and there were teachers

  623. of the law

  624. that were saying this.

  625. You can't do that,

  626. Jesus.

  627. That's a work.

  628. You're not allowed

  629. to work on the Sabbath.

  630. So Jesus walks

  631. into this synagogue.

  632. He sees the man

  633. with a withered hand.

  634. It was a total setup.

  635. Total setup.

  636. And Jesus looks at him

  637. and He looks at the people

  638. there watching Him

  639. to see what He's going to do

  640. and He says,

  641. is it not lawful?

  642. Is it not lawful

  643. to heal on the Sabbath?

  644. And He waits

  645. and they remain silent.

  646. And what the Scriptures say

  647. is Jesus looking around

  648. in anger,

  649. grieved over the hardness

  650. of hearts,

  651. be healed.

  652. Jesus healed the guy

  653. and Jesus was angry.

  654. We see a redemptive use

  655. of His anger.

  656. He was angry at people

  657. using God's Word,

  658. twisting it

  659. in order to keep

  660. loving the neighbor.

  661. Remember,

  662. Luke 19,

  663. Jesus walks into Jerusalem.

  664. He walks into the temple

  665. and He sees all these people

  666. selling goods in the temple.

  667. Remember what Jesus did?

  668. He clears it.

  669. Throws over tables.

  670. He runs people out.

  671. And He said,

  672. you can't make this house

  673. of prayer

  674. a den of robbers.

  675. They were using

  676. God's place of worship

  677. to make money

  678. for greed.

  679. It made Jesus mad.

  680. We see in these examples,

  681. examples.

  682. Jesus is wanting

  683. God worshipped.

  684. He's wanting good

  685. for others.

  686. What do you get angry about?

  687. What makes you mad?

  688. What provokes you

  689. to an anger reaction?

  690. Is it about you?

  691. Are you afraid?

  692. Out of control?

  693. Plans change?

  694. You've been hurt?

  695. Stressed out?

  696. Misunderstood?

  697. Disrespected?

  698. Disappointed?

  699. You've been denied a right?

  700. You've been passed over?

  701. You get angry?

  702. Someone tells you

  703. you don't want to hear something.

  704. You get mad.

  705. What is it that you wanted

  706. that you weren't getting

  707. that made you angry?

  708. Is it about you?

  709. Or is your anger

  710. about God's glory

  711. and the good of others?

  712. Do you get angry

  713. about abortion?

  714. Do you get angry

  715. about pornography?

  716. Do you get angry

  717. about the payday loans

  718. on the corner of 22nd and 60th?

  719. Do you get angry

  720. about these things?

  721. Do you get angry

  722. about your own sin?

  723. About your own lust?

  724. About your own greed?

  725. About your own laziness?

  726. About your own pride

  727. and self-righteousness?

  728. About your own self-worship?

  729. Do you get angry

  730. about that?

  731. We've got to be

  732. suspicious of our anger.

  733. We've got to be

  734. suspicious of where

  735. it comes from.

  736. A great question

  737. to start asking yourself is

  738. why am I angry?

  739. What is it that I want

  740. that I'm not getting?

  741. Are you angry

  742. at the right things?

  743. Now, a Christ-like anger

  744. is a sanctified anger.

  745. A Christ-like anger

  746. is a stabilized anger.

  747. It's a controlled anger.

  748. And to that point,

  749. we now turn.

  750. We've looked at God's anger.

  751. We've looked at our own anger.

  752. We've got to be suspicious of it.

  753. And now, let's look at

  754. how to be angry

  755. in a way that pleases Jesus.

  756. We need to control our anger.

  757. In Ephesians 4, 26 and 27,

  758. there are four commands.

  759. The first one is be angry.

  760. And then there are

  761. three negative commands.

  762. They are,

  763. be angry and do not sin.

  764. Do not let the sun go down

  765. on your anger.

  766. And do not give the devil

  767. an opportunity.

  768. These three commands,

  769. these last three commands,

  770. are designed to help us

  771. direct our anger.

  772. Help us to control our anger.

  773. Help us to stabilize it,

  774. to sanctify it.

  775. If anger is like kindling a fire,

  776. what we're called to

  777. is control the burn.

  778. We've got to control

  779. the burning of our anger.

  780. My folks live west of Chicago.

  781. And so when we drive out there,

  782. we drive through a lot of prairie land.

  783. And in the spring and early summer,

  784. what you'll notice

  785. are big swaths of this prairie

  786. that are just charred black.

  787. And what happens is

  788. the Illinois DNR,

  789. Department of Natural Resources,

  790. they send out groups of people

  791. to do controlled burns

  792. on the prairie.

  793. It's preventative.

  794. It protects against

  795. a devastating wildfire.

  796. And it's healthy.

  797. It manages the prairie.

  798. It's good.

  799. If anger is like kindling a fire,

  800. we must learn

  801. how to control our anger.

  802. We must learn

  803. how to control the burn.

  804. And so let's look

  805. at these three negative commands

  806. and benefit from learning

  807. how to control anger

  808. which can burn inside of us.

  809. The first is this.

  810. Be angry and do not sin.

  811. Aim your anger.

  812. Aim it.

  813. Aim it.

  814. The word translated

  815. aim,

  816. or excuse me,

  817. sin,

  818. literally means

  819. to miss the mark.

  820. It was used of

  821. spear throwing.

  822. When someone would throw

  823. a spear at a target

  824. and miss,

  825. they would sin.

  826. Do you remember

  827. King Saul?

  828. David playing his harp.

  829. Saul is angry,

  830. picks up his spear

  831. and tries to

  832. pin David to the wall.

  833. He missed.

  834. He sinned.

  835. In more ways than one.

  836. We must aim our anger

  837. at the right target.

  838. And for that,

  839. we've got to renew our minds.

  840. We've got to remember

  841. what God values.

  842. We've got to remember

  843. who we are.

  844. We've got to aim

  845. our anger

  846. at the glory of God

  847. and the good of others.

  848. Now,

  849. I am not saying

  850. be angry

  851. at the glory of God.

  852. Be angry

  853. at the good of others.

  854. We leverage our anger

  855. for the glory of God.

  856. For the good of others.

  857. If I am getting angry

  858. because I'm ashamed

  859. or embarrassed

  860. or I'm jealous

  861. of someone else,

  862. that's missing the mark.

  863. I've got to aim my anger

  864. in a way

  865. that pleases Jesus.

  866. Am I angry

  867. at the right thing?

  868. And I'm exercising my anger

  869. in the right way.

  870. One of the tremendous tools

  871. in our fight here

  872. is this.

  873. Pray.

  874. Pray.

  875. When you feel the heat

  876. coming on,

  877. when you feel your anger

  878. kindling,

  879. pray.

  880. Turn to God in prayer.

  881. Say,

  882. God,

  883. is this anger

  884. rising in me

  885. pleasing to you?

  886. Or do I just need

  887. to put this off right now?

  888. God,

  889. is there a way

  890. that this anger

  891. can be used

  892. for your purposes?

  893. We pray.

  894. We pray.

  895. It helps control

  896. the burn.

  897. We've got to make sure

  898. we're getting

  899. our angry,

  900. aiming it

  901. at the right thing.

  902. One of the results

  903. will come

  904. is this.

  905. We're going to be

  906. slow to anger.

  907. We're going to slow it down.

  908. We're not going to

  909. rush into something.

  910. If you are quick

  911. to anger,

  912. if you jump to conclusions,

  913. if you impute motives

  914. very quickly,

  915. if people walk

  916. on eggshells around you

  917. because you're volatile,

  918. you know what?

  919. You need to confess

  920. your anger.

  921. You need to go to the Lord

  922. and confess

  923. your anger to Him.

  924. Ask Him

  925. to change you.

  926. Make you more

  927. like Jesus.

  928. Don't spin it.

  929. Be honest

  930. about it.

  931. Keep it real.

  932. Be truthful.

  933. Ask other people

  934. to help you.

  935. That's how we repent.

  936. That's how we turn.

  937. And we turn to Jesus.

  938. Jesus changed me.

  939. So we've got to aim

  940. our anger

  941. and then we've got

  942. to be quick

  943. to resolve our anger.

  944. We're to be slow

  945. to anger

  946. but we're to be quick

  947. to resolve it.

  948. Don't let the sun

  949. go down on your anger.

  950. Paul is saying

  951. is don't fuel your anger.

  952. As time goes by

  953. don't be fueling your anger.

  954. Be cooling your anger.

  955. Be resolving it.

  956. Be confessing it.

  957. Get it right

  958. with other people

  959. before the sun sets.

  960. It's a great rule of thumb.

  961. Don't go to bed

  962. until you've sought

  963. peace with others.

  964. Which that means

  965. is confessing

  966. your sin to others.

  967. Maybe you're not sure

  968. if my anger is sinful.

  969. That's okay.

  970. Confess it.

  971. Hey, I'm angry.

  972. Help me.

  973. You should see

  974. my kitchen sometimes.

  975. I walk into our kitchen

  976. and I'm frustrated

  977. which is a code word

  978. for angry.

  979. And I walk in

  980. and something doesn't

  981. go right.

  982. And I'm like,

  983. Jenny, I'm just like

  984. You know what my wife does?

  985. Tells me to go for a walk.

  986. Cool down.

  987. Slow it down.

  988. Slow to anger.

  989. I confess it to her

  990. and she helps me.

  991. And if I need somebody

  992. to confess to,

  993. I'm able to.

  994. Slow it down.

  995. Be quick to peace.

  996. The goal here is

  997. that we're moving

  998. to peace together.

  999. We're controlling

  1000. the burn together.

  1001. We can't let

  1002. unresolved anger

  1003. burn like a fire

  1004. and sweep through

  1005. our marriages

  1006. and our families

  1007. and our workplaces

  1008. and our church.

  1009. We can't do that.

1010. We've got to be quick

  1011. to resolving

  1012. our anger.

  1013. Now the third way

  1014. that we control

  1015. the burn

  1016. is found

  1017. in verse 27

  1018. as well.

  1019. Don't give

  1020. the devil

  1021. an opportunity.

  1022. We're to aim

  1023. our anger.

  1024. We're to be quick

  1025. in resolving

  1026. our anger.

1027. And we're to be sober

  1028. of our enemy.

  1029. There is no question

  1030. that the Bible

  1031. clearly teaches

  1032. that there is

  1033. a devil

  1034. Satan

  1035. who opposes us.

  1036. He is a destroyer

  1037. a deceiver

  1038. a divider

  1039. and

  1040. what we need

  1041. to realize

  1042. is that

  1043. he is doomed.

  1044. His day is set.

  1045. He's going to be

  1046. thrown into

  1047. the lake of fire.

  1048. He knows that

  1049. and therefore

  1050. he rages

  1051. all the more.

  1052. brothers and sisters

  1053. our God

  1054. is sovereign

  1055. over everything

  1056. including the devil.

1057. And he has put us

  1058. in a spiritual

  1059. street fight.

  1060. It's real.

1061. The prince of the power

  1062. of the year

1063. who we used to follow

  1064. is now our enemy

  1065. and he's ticked off.

  1066. And no

  1067. he is a schemer.

  1068. I just got done

  1069. reading a book

  1070. on World War II

  1071. trench warfare.

1072. And one of the things

  1073. that both sides

  1074. both armies

  1075. would do

  1076. is they would

  1077. set up snipers

  1078. and they would

  1079. be looking for

  1080. people who are

  1081. passing gaps

  1082. in the trenches

  1083. to snipe.

  1084. People raising

  1085. their heads

  1086. to snipe.

  1087. The devil

  1088. is sniping us.

  1089. He's looking

  1090. for opportunities

  1091. that our anger

  1092. can open up

  1093. to take advantage

  1094. of us.

  1095. To injure us.

  1096. To disunite us.

  1097. We belong to God.

  1098. He is for us.

  1099. Greater is he

  1100. that is in you

  1101. than he that is

  1102. in the world.

  1103. I would rather

  1104. deal with Satan

  1105. being angry with me

  1106. than God

  1107. being angry with me.

1108. Do I have an amen?

  1109. And God has done

  1110. that for us

  1111. in Christ.

  1112. We're going to learn

  1113. in Ephesians 6

  1114. how we will

  1115. resist him.

  1116. How we fight.

  1117. What I want you

  1118. to see here

  1119. is this.

  1120. Our church

  1121. unity and health

  1122. depends on how

  1123. we deal with anger.

  1124. Your marital

  1125. unity and health

  1126. depends upon

  1127. how you deal

  1128. with anger.

  1129. Your familial

  1130. unity and health

  1131. really does

  1132. depend on

  1133. how you deal

  1134. with anger.

  1135. We've got to

  1136. put off the old

  1137. stuff.

  1138. Renew our minds

  1139. and who we are

  1140. and put on

  1141. Christ-like anger.

  1142. We've got to be

  1143. slow to it.

  1144. We've got to be

  1145. suspicious of it.

1146. We've got to aim it.

  1147. We've got to be

  1148. quick to peace

  1149. and be sober

  1150. of our enemy.

1151. Let me pray for us.

  1152. God in heaven

  1153. thank you so much

  1154. that you poured out

  1155. your anger

  1156. that was meant

  1157. for us

  1158. onto Christ.

  1159. We do not fear

  1160. your anger anymore

  1161. but God

  1162. we rejoice

  1163. in knowing

  1164. that your anger

  1165. is actually for us.

  1166. we pray too

  1167. that God

  1168. you would rid us

  1169. of sinful anger

  1170. that is destructive

  1171. and God

  1172. transform us

  1173. into Christ's image

  1174. that we may use

  1175. our anger

  1176. for good.

  1177. God protect our church.

  1178. I pray

  1179. spirit of God

  1180. that you would convict

  1181. we ask that God

  1182. there would be

  1183. humble conversations

  1184. this afternoon

  1185. confessing

  1186. of sinful anger

  1187. and the giving

  1188. of forgiveness.

  1189. God would you

  1190. bring peace

  1191. to all aspects

  1192. of our life

  1193. together

  1194. as a church.

  1195. God we are aware

  1196. of the devil

  1197. and his schemes.

  1198. God we ask you

  1199. to protect us

  1200. in Jesus name

  1201. Amen.

  1202. Amen.

  1203. Amen.

  1204. Amen.

  1205. Amen.

  1206. Amen.
